¤ ¤ 00:00:01.36\00:00:25.25 This is Papua New Guinea, the land of mystery. This is a land 00:00:25.29\00:00:30.36 of ancient cultures, many of them are unique and diverse. 00:00:30.39\00:00:34.90 Their festivals, practices and customs in keeping with this 00:00:34.93\00:00:39.40 land are colorful and mysterious and today we're setting out in 00:00:39.43\00:00:44.97 search of one of the most amazing and mysterious of all, 00:00:45.01\00:00:48.54 the Smoke Mountains of Papua New Guinea. We came to explore 00:00:48.58\00:00:55.78 one of the most bizarre rituals of the ancient world, the death 00:00:55.82\00:01:00.39 and mourning customs of the remote Anga tribe and their 00:01:00.42\00:01:05.06 unusual mummification practices. Apparently, they smoke cure the 00:01:05.09\00:01:11.00 bodies of the dead and place them along cliff faces 00:01:11.03\00:01:14.77 overlooking their village. 00:01:14.80\00:01:16.40 These mummies have fascinated anthropologists 00:01:16.44\00:01:20.78 writers and film makers for more than a hundred years. 00:01:20.81\00:01:25.11 But few have been able to tell fact from fiction. Most of 00:01:25.15\00:01:28.78 what's known about the mummies is based on hearsay, 00:01:28.82\00:01:32.09 exaggeration or flight of imagination. So we are setting 00:01:32.12\00:01:37.63 off to discover what we can for ourselves. Join me on an incredible journey to 00:01:37.66\00:01:44.33 search for the smoke mummies of Papua New Guinea. And in our 00:01:44.37\00:01:48.94 search we might just unravel one of the greatest mysteries 00:01:48.97\00:01:54.18 of all, what happens to us, after we die. 00:01:54.21\00:01:57.51 ¤ ¤ 00:01:57.55\00:02:26.41 Our journey in search of the smoked mummies of Papua New 00:02:26.44\00:02:28.94 Guinea started in Lae, the second-largest city in Papua New 00:02:28.98\00:02:34.02 Guinea. We've hired a light aircraft to fly us into a bush 00:02:34.05\00:02:36.58 airfield at Menyamya. Now Menyamya is in the heart of 00:02:36.62\00:02:42.02 Anga country and is truly remote. It's a district center 00:02:42.06\00:02:46.23 in the Moresby Province which is a gateway to the highlands of 00:02:46.26\00:02:49.80 New Guinea. Here the Anga people still follow a subsistence 00:02:49.83\00:02:54.64 lifestyle and wear their traditional dress on special 00:02:54.67\00:02:59.14 occasions. In the past they were considered violent and fierce 00:02:59.17\00:03:03.41 warriors, often attacking more peaceful tribes in the region. 00:03:03.45\00:03:12.29 Although the Anga are a peaceful people today their fierce 00:03:12.32\00:03:17.49 reputation and warrior heritage is displayed in the traditional 00:03:17.53\00:03:20.56 welcome that awaits us on our arrival at the bush airstrip. 00:03:20.60\00:03:24.27 We are greeted by a group of men and women in traditional 00:03:24.30\00:03:28.47 dress as we set foot on their land. The welcome ritual begins 00:03:28.50\00:03:32.47 with the leading warrior advancing and circling. He 00:03:32.51\00:03:38.51 returns to the group and then they all rush in with attacking 00:03:38.55\00:03:40.68 and threatening gestures, shouting and brandishing their 00:03:40.72\00:03:46.59 primitive but deadly weapons including bows and arrows, 00:03:46.62\00:03:49.86 spears and clubs. It's a confronting and intimidating 00:03:49.89\00:03:53.43 experience as they wave their weapons menacingly at your head. 00:03:53.46\00:03:56.87 However, it's with some relief that their demeanor changes and 00:03:56.90\00:04:02.30 we're welcomed into their territory and given permission 00:04:02.34\00:04:05.77 to continue our journey. For centuries the Anga tribe has 00:04:05.81\00:04:11.51 tribe have practiced a unique mummification technique, smoke 00:04:11.55\00:04:16.55 curing. They used to smoke their dead and leave the mummified 00:04:16.58\00:04:20.26 bodies in burial caves and cliff ledges to watch over their 00:04:20.29\00:04:24.93 descendants. While this practice has mostly died out with the 00:04:24.96\00:04:28.93 coming of Christianity the skeletal remains and what is 00:04:28.96\00:04:32.80 left of their leather-like skin still keep guard from where they 00:04:32.83\00:04:37.17 were placed years ago. Most of the smoked corpses are found in 00:04:37.21\00:04:45.81 the Aseki district several hours drive from here. So we've got to 00:04:45.85\00:04:49.78 travel deeper into the jungle by four-wheel drive. It's necessary 00:04:49.82\00:04:53.96 to carry everything we need with us as there's nothing much 00:04:53.99\00:04:57.69 available once we leave Menyamya. The Menyamya region 00:04:57.73\00:05:06.84 is known for its tangled and impenetrable rain forest. This 00:05:06.87\00:05:11.24 tropical jungle is filled with some of the most spectacular 00:05:11.27\00:05:14.84 butterflies, orchids and birds on planet earth. These jungles 00:05:14.88\00:05:20.72 are home to a fabulous array of orchids. Orchids are the largest 00:05:20.75\00:05:25.85 group of all living flowers and there are over 3000 known 00:05:25.89\00:05:30.16 species of orchids in New Guinea more than any other country in 00:05:30.19\00:05:33.83 the world. They thrive in these tropical rain forests. They come 00:05:33.86\00:05:39.10 in all shapes, sizes and colors and they are truly magnificent. 00:05:39.13\00:05:44.31 These jungles also have a remarkable and beautiful array 00:05:44.34\00:05:49.64 of butterfly species. There are nearly a thousand different 00:05:49.68\00:05:53.21 butterfly species in New Guinea. It's forests are graced by these 00:05:53.25\00:05:56.85 magnificent creatures and are home to the world's largest 00:05:56.89\00:06:00.52 butterfly, the Queen Alexandra Birdwing. It's got a wing span 00:06:00.56\00:06:04.59 over 25 cm. These jungles are also home to one of the richest 00:06:04.63\00:06:10.83 and most varied array of birds in the world. Over 700 species 00:06:10.87\00:06:16.67 of birds inhabit these forests including 36 species of birds of 00:06:16.71\00:06:21.31 paradise, probably the most spectacular and beautiful 00:06:21.34\00:06:25.45 feathered creatures on our planet. The raggiana bird of 00:06:25.48\00:06:29.18 paradise is the national emblem of Papua New Guinea. These 00:06:29.22\00:06:34.12 magnificent birds are distinguished by striking color 00:06:34.16\00:06:38.09 and bright plumage of yellow, blue, scarlet and green. These 00:06:38.13\00:06:43.16 spectacular colors make them the world's most dramatic and 00:06:43.20\00:06:47.40 attractive birds. These jungles are also home to some unique and 00:06:47.44\00:06:52.47 amazing animals including the tree kangaroo. Now to many 00:06:52.51\00:06:58.25 people the suggestion that a kangaroo could live up a tree is 00:06:58.28\00:07:02.65 fantasy, yet deep in these mysterious forests there are 00:07:02.68\00:07:07.12 extraordinary kangaroos that do just that. Once you leave the 00:07:07.16\00:07:15.56 district center it's like stepping back into the stone age 00:07:15.60\00:07:19.17 People follow a lifestyle and live much the same way as they 00:07:19.20\00:07:23.51 have for thousands of years. In fact, 80 percent of the 00:07:23.54\00:07:27.54 population of Papua New Guinea five million rural people make a 00:07:27.58\00:07:31.91 living from subsistence farming. Only one fifth of the population 00:07:31.95\00:07:36.62 earns a wage. It's extremely rough in spectacular country. 00:07:36.65\00:07:44.09 The further inland we get the worse the road gets. It's a bone 00:07:44.13\00:07:48.66 jarring journey with large pot holes, muddy ruts, sharp bends, 00:07:48.70\00:07:53.97 washouts and river crossings. When it rains driving becomes 00:07:54.00\00:07:58.81 hazardous. As we near Asiki the rain arrived and the muddy 00:07:58.84\00:08:05.35 and slippery conditions made progress almost impossible. Our 00:08:05.38\00:08:09.92 vehicle got hopelessly bogged in the red mud and it took a lot 00:08:09.95\00:08:13.59 of time, patience, and effort to get moving again. This was 00:08:13.62\00:08:17.99 repeated several times. Now there's about a dozen sites in 00:08:18.03\00:08:23.16 the Asiki district where smoked corpses can be found. So we're 00:08:23.20\00:08:27.77 trying to find where the most accessible mummies are and also 00:08:27.80\00:08:31.64 ones that are in good condition. So we meet two of the tribal 00:08:31.67\00:08:37.91 leaders. They will advise us, organize permission for us to 00:08:37.95\00:08:42.18 travel deeper into this region and then guide us up to the 00:08:42.22\00:08:46.45 cliff ledge where the mummies are. As we are now entering the 00:08:46.49\00:08:50.63 Asiki region and new tribal territory, we are given another 00:08:50.66\00:08:54.53 traditional welcome. Once again it starts in an aggressive and 00:08:54.56\00:08:58.77 threatening way. As soon as we arrive and get out of the 00:08:58.80\00:09:02.34 vehicle the two tribal leaders advance shouting and waving 00:09:02.37\00:09:06.54 their weapons in a bold, hostile and frightening challenge. After 00:09:06.57\00:09:11.41 another confronting encounter involving clubs, spears and bows 00:09:11.45\00:09:16.22 and arrows things settle down. We're invited to follow and are 00:09:16.25\00:09:21.52 granted permission to proceed further. Our journey takes us 00:09:21.56\00:09:27.10 deeper into the jungle in our search for the mysterious 00:09:27.13\00:09:31.50 mummies. Our guide leads us towards the village entrance 00:09:31.53\00:09:36.14 pointing in the direction of the cliff ledge high in the 00:09:36.17\00:09:39.04 mountains where the mummies are located. After serious 00:09:39.07\00:09:43.55 discussion and negotiations we are given permission to view the 00:09:43.58\00:09:48.42 mummies, but we are now on what is considered sacred ground to 00:09:48.45\00:09:52.42 these villagers and so another welcome ceremony awaits us. This 00:09:52.45\00:09:57.93 is by far the most fierce and hostile we've yet experienced. 00:09:57.96\00:10:03.13 A group of villagers covered in mud and wearing pigs tusks and 00:10:03.16\00:10:07.04 other adornment confront us armed with a frightening array 00:10:07.07\00:10:11.67 of weapons. I'm told it's going to be _, wet and muddy so 00:10:11.71\00:10:19.61 it's off with the regular clothing and into expedition 00:10:19.65\00:10:22.55 gear and something more appropriate and just as well. 00:10:22.58\00:10:27.86 The final stage of our journey to the mummies is a laborious 00:10:27.89\00:10:32.09 climb through the jungle that's riddled with stinging nettles 00:10:32.13\00:10:35.80 and spider webs. The track is so steep and overgrown in parts 00:10:35.83\00:10:40.90 that it's necessary to climb on all fours. It's difficult to get 00:10:40.94\00:10:52.61 up here to the mummies. They are perched up here on this cliff 00:10:52.65\00:10:56.69 ledge. There's no flat ground to stand on here and it's very 00:10:56.72\00:11:01.62 slippery and easy to lose your footing. But this is what we've 00:11:01.66\00:11:06.16 been searching for and so we slipped and slid and struggled 00:11:06.19\00:11:09.96 and battled to get up here. The mummies are more macabre than 00:11:10.00\00:11:15.97 anything I'd imagined. There's 14 of them in this group. 00:11:16.00\00:11:21.21 They're all sitting in life like positions or curled up like 00:11:21.24\00:11:25.41 fetuses inside large baskets. They're supported by a banded 00:11:25.45\00:11:30.42 platform and scaffold. They're smeared with red clay and in 00:11:30.45\00:11:34.56 various stages of decomposition. There's parched sections of skin 00:11:34.59\00:11:39.49 and muscle clinging to their skeletons. The mummification 00:11:39.53\00:11:45.63 process is carried out carefully and respectfully. When someone 00:11:45.67\00:11:49.34 dies an experienced person in the art of mummification makes 00:11:49.37\00:11:54.18 an incision in the feet, knees and elbows of the deceased so 00:11:54.21\00:11:59.51 that the body fats can drain into containers. The fat is 00:11:59.55\00:12:05.32 smeared onto the body of the living relatives to impart the 00:12:05.35\00:12:09.36 strength of the dead to the living. Leftover fats are 00:12:09.39\00:12:13.70 used for cooking. Then the eyes, mouth and anus are sewn shut 00:12:13.73\00:12:17.37 to keep air from entering the body before it's subjected to 00:12:17.40\00:12:23.20 the smoking process. This takes weeks, sometimes even months. 00:12:23.24\00:12:28.34 After the body is smoke-cured it's covered in red clay and red 00:12:28.38\00:12:31.45 ocre to deter insects and predators. The mummy is then 00:12:31.48\00:12:36.28 placed in burial caves or along cliff ledges like this one 00:12:36.32\00:12:41.02 overlooking the village. The villagers then believe that the 00:12:41.06\00:12:45.16 the mummy becomes a watcher or a guardian for the village. 00:12:45.19\00:12:48.56 Great warriors are given special positions higher up on 00:12:48.60\00:12:53.03 the cliffs to watch out for enemies and invaders. These 00:12:53.07\00:12:57.91 modern day warriors while standing here with their 00:12:57.94\00:13:01.44 ancestors who they tenderly and lovingly placed here to 00:13:01.48\00:13:05.88 watch out over their village and they believe that they are 00:13:05.91\00:13:09.28 watchers or guardians that are keeping them safe and protecting 00:13:09.32\00:13:13.42 them from danger. The highest respect that these warriors can 00:13:13.46\00:13:18.19 give their ancestors is to place them here on this cliff ledge in 00:13:18.23\00:13:22.36 this position of honor and prestige. The very sight of a 00:13:22.40\00:13:27.04 row of charred red bodies hanging off the mountains might 00:13:27.07\00:13:31.71 seem quite grotesque. In fact, I find it quite disturbing and 00:13:31.74\00:13:36.54 distressing. It's not something we're used to. But for the Anga 00:13:36.58\00:13:41.98 people it's the highest form of respect for the dead. When I 00:13:42.02\00:13:47.26 look at these mummified corpses lined up along the cliff ledge, 00:13:47.29\00:13:50.43 the question that keeps crossing my mind is where really are 00:13:50.46\00:13:56.90 these people? And it raises the age old question - what happens 00:13:56.93\00:14:02.64 after we die? It's an age old question. Men and women through 00:14:02.67\00:14:09.71 the centuries have wondered about the same thing. They've 00:14:09.74\00:14:14.32 wrestled with the uncertainty of death. What really happens to us 00:14:14.35\00:14:19.55 after we die? Every civilization and all religions have 00:14:19.59\00:14:24.49 endeavored 00:14:24.53\00:14:25.86 to provide answers. All of their theories and explanations fall 00:14:25.89\00:14:30.10 into three primary view points about death. The first view is 00:14:30.13\00:14:35.37 quite popular today but utterly dismal. And here it is: 00:14:35.40\00:14:40.71 When people die that's the end. They simply stop living and 00:14:40.74\00:14:46.11 there is nothing beyond this life. At death it's all over. 00:14:46.15\00:14:50.79 It's final. That's it. The second view teaches: 00:14:50.82\00:14:56.32 that people are immortal. Everybody lives forever. They 00:14:56.36\00:15:00.26 never actually die. At death they just continue on living 00:15:00.30\00:15:05.53 somewhere in some shape or form. Then the third view teaches that 00:15:05.57\00:15:12.01 people are mortal. They all can and do die. But there is life 00:15:12.04\00:15:17.55 after death and this after life is always connected to one 00:15:17.58\00:15:23.99 person, Jesus Christ, and comes through resurrection. Now these 00:15:24.02\00:15:29.42 three viewpoints about death are very different from each 00:15:29.46\00:15:34.30 other. They are conflicting views. And so the question is 00:15:34.33\00:15:39.30 how do we decide which one is right. How do we find out what 00:15:39.33\00:15:43.27 really happens when a person dies. Well I believe that there 00:15:43.30\00:15:48.64 is only one place to settle all the confusion about death. There 00:15:48.68\00:15:53.78 is only one reliable source of information that reveals 00:15:53.82\00:16:00.36 ultimate truth and that's the Bible, the word of God. The 00:16:00.39\00:16:03.73 Bible unlocks the mystery of death. Jesus stated it 00:16:03.76\00:16:08.20 succinctly. Here's what he said in John the 17th chapter and 00:16:08.23\00:16:14.14 verse 17: 00:16:14.17\00:16:18.31 So let's find out exactly what the Bible says on this subject. 00:16:22.01\00:16:28.52 Let's find out what really happens to a person after they 00:16:28.55\00:16:33.76 die. Well firstly the Bible clearly teaches that there is 00:16:33.79\00:16:38.53 life after death. It calls it eternal life or everlasting life 00:16:38.56\00:16:44.03 Please notice what the Bible says in John chapter 3 00:16:44.07\00:16:47.84 and verse 16: 00:16:47.87\00:16:49.40 The Bible says that eternal life is possible and is totally 00:17:01.28\00:17:06.86 dependent on belief in Jesus Christ and accepting him as 00:17:06.89\00:17:11.29 Savior. Eternal life is a gift from God. Here's what the Bible 00:17:11.33\00:17:16.93 says in Romans chapter 6 and verse 23: 00:17:16.97\00:17:21.84 The Bible says we've all sinned and that the wages of sin is 00:17:30.38\00:17:36.69 death. The Bible says we're not inherently immortal. Man does 00:17:36.72\00:17:41.09 not naturally possess eternal life in himself. Because we've 00:17:41.12\00:17:45.63 all sinned and made mistakes we die. We're not immortal. The 00:17:45.66\00:17:51.03 Bible says that only God is immortal. Here's what it says in 00:17:51.07\00:17:56.00 1 Timothy: 00:17:56.04\00:17:57.37 So the Bible says that only God is immortal. People are not 00:18:21.60\00:18:27.34 immortal. We don't naturally live forever. Because of our 00:18:27.37\00:18:31.74 sins and mistakes we are subject to death. We die. But if we 00:18:31.77\00:18:37.18 believe in Jesus and accept him as our Savior, then we receive 00:18:37.21\00:18:41.65 the gift of eternal life from God. But that eternal life is 00:18:41.68\00:18:47.26 always connected to one person, Jesus Christ, and belief in him. 00:18:47.29\00:18:52.43 And that gift of eternal life only becomes a reality at the 00:18:52.46\00:18:57.50 resurrection when Jesus returns the second time. Eternal life, 00:18:57.53\00:19:02.50 the gift of God, only comes at the resurrection. Here's what 00:19:02.54\00:19:08.01 the Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 00:19:08.04\00:19:09.84 chapter 4, verses 16 and 17. 00:19:09.88\00:19:13.48 Aren't those priceless words? When Paul wanted to comfort 00:19:45.81\00:19:51.32 loved ones of those who had died in Christ, this is what he said. 00:19:51.35\00:19:55.49 He pointed them to the resurrection. This is the Bible 00:19:55.52\00:20:00.53 hope, the blessed hope. It doesn't seek comfort in 00:20:00.56\00:20:03.47 religious ritual, mummification or false theories. It focuses 00:20:03.50\00:20:08.90 on the great day when God will raise the dead. Death will be 00:20:08.94\00:20:13.94 overcome at the second coming of Christ. We have the promise 00:20:13.98\00:20:17.85 of eternal life now. We have the assurance of eternal life now. 00:20:17.88\00:20:23.08 But it's always connected to Jesus and the resurrection. We 00:20:23.12\00:20:28.66 only receive eternal life when Jesus returns a second time and 00:20:28.69\00:20:33.50 the resurrection of the dead takes place. The Bible makes 00:20:33.53\00:20:37.17 this crystal clear in the great chapter on the resurrection, 00:20:37.20\00:20:41.47 1 Corinthians 15. Listen to this: 00:20:41.50\00:20:44.04 But how can we be certain that this is right, that this is 00:21:00.76\00:21:04.46 going to happen? Well we already have a guarantee. We've got the 00:21:04.49\00:21:09.76 evidence. You see Jesus resurrection was an event that 00:21:09.80\00:21:14.10 New Testament writers could whole heartedly affirm. After 00:21:14.14\00:21:18.74 Christ's death, they'd seen him alive, spoken with him, touched 00:21:18.77\00:21:23.38 him. This was no wandering spirit. This wasn't their 00:21:23.41\00:21:27.68 imagination. This was flesh and blood reality. It was this 00:21:27.72\00:21:34.42 marvelous event the resurrection of Jesus that enabled the 00:21:34.46\00:21:38.53 disciples to know for sure that death could be overcome. It was 00:21:38.56\00:21:43.30 their guarantee. Not because of anything they had done, not 00:21:43.33\00:21:47.97 because of human effort, but solely because of the work of 00:21:48.00\00:21:53.38 God. The followers of Jesus, Christians, understood that 00:21:53.41\00:21:56.75 believers can be resurrected just as their Lord had 00:21:56.78\00:22:00.48 resurrected. Eternal life is in Christ. Notice what the Bible 00:22:00.52\00:22:05.75 says in John chapter 6 and verse 36: 00:22:05.79\00:22:09.12 That's where our hope must lie. In Jesus. He alone possesses the 00:22:14.30\00:22:21.34 key to the grave. Eternal life is a gift from him. The Bible 00:22:21.37\00:22:26.68 makes this crystal clear. Listen to what it says in 1 John 00:22:26.71\00:22:30.65 chapter 5 and verse 11: 00:22:30.68\00:22:33.05 That's the key to living forever. It's making the right 00:22:41.99\00:22:45.39 connection, believing in Jesus. Eternal life is in Jesus. Our 00:22:45.43\00:22:52.30 eternal life depends on connecting ourselves with him. 00:22:52.33\00:22:56.37 The Bible writers all placed their hope in Jesus and the 00:22:56.40\00:23:02.91 resurrection. Their faith was based entirely in a future event 00:23:02.94\00:23:07.25 that would echo their Lord's resurrection. They knew that 00:23:07.28\00:23:10.99 Jesus had promised the believer this in John chapter 6 00:23:11.02\00:23:14.42 and verse 54: 00:23:14.46\00:23:16.02 Yes when Jesus returns the dead in Christ will be raised and 00:23:23.80\00:23:27.97 will live forever. Until then they sleep in the grave. The 00:23:28.00\00:23:33.44 Bible consistently pictures death as a sleep that only 00:23:33.48\00:23:38.55 Christ's coming awakens. In fact, the Bible refers to death 00:23:38.58\00:23:43.49 as a sleep no less than 53 times. David, Daniel, Paul and 00:23:43.52\00:23:49.12 Jesus himself all referred to death as a sleep So what happens 00:23:49.16\00:23:55.33 after we die? Well the Bible says that believers in Jesus 00:23:55.36\00:24:00.04 remain in the grave in the sleep of death until Jesus comes and 00:24:00.07\00:24:04.87 resurrects them to live forever. This is the Bible hope, the 00:24:04.91\00:24:10.81 blessed hope We can have confidence in this hope. Why not 00:24:10.85\00:24:16.22 make it your hope right now as we pray. 00:24:16.25\00:24:20.09 Our dear heavenly Father, thank you for your word the Bible and 00:24:20.12\00:24:24.93 the great truths it reveals. I'm so thankful for the hope we have 00:24:24.96\00:24:29.36 in Jesus Christ and the resurrection. We don't have to 00:24:29.40\00:24:33.23 live under the shadow of death anymore. If we accept Jesus as 00:24:33.27\00:24:38.34 our personal Savior you've promised to give us eternal 00:24:38.37\00:24:43.04 life. His resurrection assures us that it will be repeated for 00:24:43.08\00:24:47.42 each of us at his second coming. We look forward to that day. 00:24:47.45\00:24:52.32 Keep us faithful until then. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen. 00:24:52.35\00:24:59.59 Papua New Guinea is a land of mystery.
