Here 00:02:41.49\00:02:46.49 you find some of the most beautiful rock formations in the 00:02:46.53\00:02:50.17 world with giant boulders precariously balancing on top of 00:02:50.20\00:02:54.30 each other that defy belief that they can manage to keep holding 00:02:54.34\00:02:59.24 on to their amazing position. The Matobo Hills are composed 00:02:59.27\00:03:04.75 entirely of granite and have an average height of 1500 meters 00:03:04.78\00:03:09.42 and together cover an area of over 3000 sq/km. Right across 00:03:09.45\00:03:15.29 this area there's a range of domes, spires and balancing rock 00:03:15.32\00:03:20.30 formations that have been sculpted out of the solid 00:03:20.33\00:03:23.80 granite plateau through thousands of years of erosion 00:03:23.83\00:03:27.70 and weathering. People have interacted with and been 00:03:27.74\00:03:34.48 inspired by these dramatic rock formations for thousands of 00:03:34.51\00:03:39.48 years. The San bushmen, a tribe of hunter-gatherers lived among 00:03:39.51\00:03:44.05 the huge boulders in these hills about 2000 years ago and left a 00:03:44.09\00:03:48.99 rich heritage of rock paintings. Hidden away in the caves and 00:03:49.02\00:03:54.80 rock shelters of the Matobo Hills are over 3000 rock art 00:03:54.83\00:03:59.70 sites giving it the greatest density of ancient painted sites 00:03:59.73\00:04:04.07 anywhere in the world. Most of the art was painted here about 00:04:04.11\00:04:09.41 1600 years ago. This superb collection of rock art includes 00:04:09.44\00:04:16.02 beautiful freezes of elephants, giraffes, kudu and other wild 00:04:16.05\00:04:21.02 animals that inhabited the area. These are symbols and 00:04:21.06\00:04:25.66 illustrations of the bushmen's deepest religious feelings and 00:04:25.69\00:04:30.60 understanding of the reality of life around them. The bushmen's 00:04:30.63\00:04:37.61 simple art style and techniques have endured the centuries and 00:04:37.64\00:04:42.51 withstood the rigors of time. The paintings provide an insight 00:04:42.54\00:04:46.78 into the lifestyle and activities of these foraging 00:04:46.82\00:04:51.35 societies that lived among the rock formations centuries ago. 00:04:51.39\00:04:56.89 ¤ ¤ 00:04:56.93\00:05:13.38 Later the hills and balancing rocks were considered sacred by 00:05:13.41\00:05:18.85 the Ngubani people. They were a Bartu speaking nation 00:05:18.88\00:05:22.48 historically known as the Matebele. They traveled north 00:05:22.52\00:05:26.65 Zululand in South Africa and settled here under the 00:05:26.69\00:05:30.43 leadership of their warrior chief Mzilikazi. When Chief 00:05:30.46\00:05:35.76 Mzilikazi first saw the amazing granite boulders here he likened 00:05:35.80\00:05:40.77 the bald rocks to the bald heads of his senior counselors and 00:05:40.80\00:05:45.31 renamed the hills Matobo which derives from the Matabele word 00:05:45.34\00:05:50.31 for bald-headed. In colonial times Matobo Hills became the 00:05:50.35\00:05:56.12 favored location of businessman, politician and imperialist 00:05:56.15\00:06:00.79 empire-builder Cecil Rhodes. In fact, he loved the place so 00:06:00.82\00:06:06.56 much that he chose this as his final resting place. His grave, 00:06:06.59\00:06:11.10 carved from the rock is marked by a brass plaque at the aptly 00:06:11.13\00:06:16.34 named World's View, a vantage point high up on the rocks. 00:06:16.37\00:06:24.41 ¤ ¤ 00:06:24.45\00:06:29.38 The boulders, hills and valleys provide a variety of habitats 00:06:29.42\00:06:32.99 for wildlife and plenty of game is found throughout the Matobo 00:06:33.02\00:06:37.36 Hills. Many of the animals depicted in the rock art of the 00:06:37.39\00:06:40.80 bushmen are still found roaming the area. There are, however, no 00:06:40.83\00:06:45.93 lions or elephants, which means that you can walk freely amongst 00:06:45.97\00:06:49.87 the hills and explore them on your own and view the wild 00:06:49.90\00:06:53.38 animals as well. There are plenty of elegant impala here. 00:06:53.41\00:06:59.65 They are one of the most common and most graceful antelope in 00:06:59.68\00:07:03.32 the African bushveld. They've got a white belly and the black 00:07:03.35\00:07:07.59 stripe that extends from the top of the rump down the back of 00:07:07.62\00:07:11.23 each thigh. Only the rams have horns which are shaped like a 00:07:11.26\00:07:16.67 lyre. The impala is preyed upon by most of the large carnivore 00:07:16.70\00:07:21.90 and so they are on constant alert. Should one of them spot 00:07:21.94\00:07:26.01 Danger, it will snort an alarm and the whole herd will scatter. 00:07:26.04\00:07:32.58 They're renowned for their spectacular leaps over shrubs 00:07:32.61\00:07:34.38 and bushes when they're alarmed or frightened. And it's one of 00:07:34.42\00:07:38.95 the treats offered by nature to see this antelope perform their 00:07:38.99\00:07:42.92 incredible three meter high and 12 meter long leaps. The tallest 00:07:42.96\00:07:50.60 animal on earth is also found in the Matobo area. Giraffe grow 00:07:50.63\00:07:55.80 to between five and six meters tall. That's taller than three 00:07:55.84\00:08:01.28 humans. Their long legs and necks help them to eat leaves 00:08:01.31\00:08:04.95 at the top of tall trees that other animals can't reach. They 00:08:04.98\00:08:09.52 have long tongues that can grow to a whopping 53 cm and no teeth 00:08:09.55\00:08:15.42 at the front of their top jaw which allows them to rip leaves 00:08:15.46\00:08:19.96 from branches. These gentle giants of the African bushveld 00:08:20.00\00:08:24.40 may look slow and ungainly, however, when they need to they 00:08:24.43\00:08:29.00 can reach up to 50 km/hr over short distances. The valleys and 00:08:29.04\00:08:37.98 grasslands between the hills are home to herds of zebra. These 00:08:38.01\00:08:42.42 black and white beauties are social creatures and live 00:08:42.45\00:08:45.75 together in large herds and will sometimes team up with other 00:08:45.79\00:08:49.62 grazers such as antelope and wildebeest. They spend most of 00:08:49.66\00:08:54.10 their day eating grass and are constantly on the move looking 00:08:54.13\00:08:58.40 for fresh grass to eat and water to drink. And their most famous 00:08:58.43\00:09:04.17 feature, their brilliant black and white striped coat, of 00:09:04.21\00:09:07.51 course. So, why do zebras have stripes? Well we're not entirely 00:09:07.54\00:09:13.15 sure but some believe they dazzle and confuse predators and 00:09:13.18\00:09:16.45 biting insects, or they control the animal's body heat. Because 00:09:16.48\00:09:22.76 each individual's stripes are unique, their stripes may also 00:09:22.79\00:09:26.19 have a social purpose helping zebras to recognize one another. 00:09:26.23\00:09:32.97 Matobo contains Zimbabwe's highest concentration of rhino, 00:09:33.00\00:09:41.24 both black and white species. These fabulous creatures are 00:09:41.28\00:09:46.28 known for their awesome giant horns that grow from their 00:09:46.31\00:09:50.25 snouts and that's where their name comes from. Rhinoceros 00:09:50.29\00:09:53.59 means nose horn. Rhinos are some of the biggest animals in the 00:09:53.62\00:10:00.76 world. The 00:10:00.80\00:10:02.33 white rhino can grow to nearly 2 m tall and weight a massive 00:10:02.36\00:10:06.74 2500 kg. That's the weight of about 30 men. But despite their 00:10:06.77\00:10:13.74 huge size and strength, these bulky beasts don't prey on other 00:10:13.78\00:10:18.78 animals for food. They're herbivores and instead like to 00:10:18.81\00:10:22.82 munch on lots of grass and plants. During the heat of the 00:10:22.85\00:10:27.29 day they like to wallow in muddy pools or rest under shady trees 00:10:27.32\00:10:32.63 to cool off. They usually cover themselves in mud to protect 00:10:32.66\00:10:37.40 their skin from the strong sun and ward of biting bugs too. 00:10:37.43\00:10:43.27 Sadly the rhinos very existence is threatened today. They're in 00:10:43.30\00:10:47.91 danger of becoming extinct in the wild. It's estimated that 00:10:47.94\00:10:53.78 there are only around 29,000 rhinos left in the wild today 00:10:53.82\00:10:57.85 compared to half a million at the beginning of the 20th 00:10:57.89\00:11:02.59 century. The main threat to these magnificent animals is 00:11:02.62\00:11:07.20 poaching or illegal hunting largely because their horns are 00:11:07.23\00:11:12.20 used in traditional folk medicine particularly in Asia. 00:11:12.23\00:11:15.97 Today their horns are more valuable than gold and so 00:11:16.00\00:11:20.74 poachers kill them for their horns. Wild animals and rock art 00:11:20.78\00:11:31.15 are wonderful attractions in the Matobo area. However, the most 00:11:31.19\00:11:36.76 notable thing about Matobo are the amazing rock formations and 00:11:36.79\00:11:42.76 the hills. These hills have provided shelter and refuge for 00:11:42.80\00:11:47.07 people during troubled times. They provided security and 00:11:47.10\00:11:52.91 sustenance and have been a haven for humans for thousands of 00:11:52.94\00:11:55.78 years. The grandeur and peacefulness of these hills is 00:11:55.81\00:12:03.85 immense and has contributed to their hallowed reputation. They 00:12:03.89\00:12:08.66 are a reminder that hills and grand rocks have awed and 00:12:08.69\00:12:13.33 inspired humans through the ages And this is certainly true of 00:12:13.36\00:12:17.87 David, Israel's greatest and most loved king. David was the 00:12:17.90\00:12:24.27 lowly shepherd boy who defeated Goliath, became king, formed 00:12:24.31\00:12:29.18 Israel into a nation, established Jerusalem 00:12:29.21\00:12:33.01 as its capital and ushered in Israel's golden age. No wonder 00:12:33.05\00:12:39.25 he's Israel's greatest and most loved king and his name is 00:12:39.29\00:12:43.76 mentioned more than any other name in the Bible. But it's not 00:12:43.79\00:12:47.86 as a great warrior or mighty king that David won the 00:12:47.90\00:12:52.30 everlasting love of his people and indeed of people around the 00:12:52.33\00:12:57.27 world. Rather he did it as the author of the book of Psalms, 00:12:57.31\00:13:00.91 the sweetest poetry of Israel. He wrote dozens of psalms, some 00:13:00.94\00:13:06.75 of the most touching and beautiful poetry ever written. 00:13:06.78\00:13:11.55 And that's why people love and remember David. Throughout the 00:13:11.59\00:13:16.46 ages his poetry, the book of psalms, has served as a 00:13:16.49\00:13:20.46 boundless source of inspiration, courage and hope. And David 00:13:20.50\00:13:25.13 wrote about the hills and grand rocks. For example, here's what 00:13:25.17\00:13:29.97 he wrote in Psalm 121 verses 1 and 2: 00:13:30.01\00:13:33.81 Did you notice what David did when he needed help. He looked 00:13:44.02\00:13:49.16 up. He looked up to the Lord who made heaven and earth. 00:13:49.19\00:13:53.76 He's saying 00:13:53.80\00:13:55.13 the almighty God of creation is a sure thing, powerful, 00:13:55.16\00:13:58.10 dependable. I see his power displayed in the hills and in 00:13:58.13\00:14:02.80 the world around me. I know that I can trust him. Now let's face 00:14:02.84\00:14:09.71 it. There are times when we all need help. When we wake up 00:14:09.74\00:14:14.12 feeling burdened, anxious, thoughts swirling wondering how 00:14:14.15\00:14:19.15 we're going to cope with the challenges of life. Ever been 00:14:19.19\00:14:23.99 there? Do you need help? I know I do. Where do you look for help 00:14:24.03\00:14:29.53 Let me share something personal with you. I've been through some 00:14:29.56\00:14:34.94 tough times recently, really challenging, soul destroying. 00:14:34.97\00:14:38.97 Even though I believe the truth and know that God's in control, 00:14:39.01\00:14:43.98 there was a real battle in my heart and in my mind. I started 00:14:44.01\00:14:47.48 to worry and doubt. Fear crept in. I started looking all around 00:14:47.52\00:14:52.82 in my desperate search for help. I lost focus because I got 00:14:52.85\00:14:58.09 distracted by all the things that can never really give us 00:14:58.13\00:15:01.00 strength and hope anyway. I found that people won't ever be 00:15:01.03\00:15:05.10 able to answer for every need we have. Money and success can't 00:15:05.13\00:15:10.34 satisfy our deepest needs. I also realized that this world 00:15:10.37\00:15:15.51 will never be free of all conflict. It's even found in the 00:15:15.54\00:15:19.41 most unexpected places. And there's only one source of true 00:15:19.45\00:15:24.25 help when we're really in need. I read this psalm again, read it 00:15:24.29\00:15:28.99 like never before and instead of looking all around, I looked up. 00:15:29.02\00:15:34.56 Psalm 121 is one of the Bible passages that gave me hope and 00:15:34.60\00:15:40.80 got me through. And so, I want to share it with you today 00:15:40.84\00:15:45.71 because I can assure you from personal experience that 00:15:45.74\00:15:49.31 whatever problems you're facing, whatever challenge may appear 00:15:49.34\00:15:53.52 about to overwhelm you, whatever mistakes you've made, there is 00:15:53.55\00:15:58.35 hope, there is help. Notice Psalm 121 again: 00:15:58.39\00:16:04.06 You can count on God. He's reliable. He's the creator who 00:16:15.94\00:16:21.14 made heaven and earth. He's all powerful. His power is displayed 00:16:21.18\00:16:26.61 in the world around us and he's with us always. We know that we 00:16:26.65\00:16:31.85 can trust him. Notice as we read further in Psalm 121, verses 3-4 00:16:31.89\00:16:38.49 Sometimes we may find ourselves on slippery slopes or the path 00:16:52.31\00:16:57.08 we're walking on seems to be full of potholes and obstacles. 00:16:57.11\00:17:01.28 We may be in danger of losing our sure footing. We may stumble 00:17:01.32\00:17:06.15 but as long as our eyes are fixed on him God keeps us from 00:17:06.19\00:17:11.26 falling. He keeps our footsteps firm, for he watches over us as 00:17:11.29\00:17:17.00 our sleeplessness guardian and never loses sight of us. Now we 00:17:17.03\00:17:21.74 come to verses 5 and 6: 00:17:21.77\00:17:24.71 God is our keeper, our protector and provider. He keeps 00:17:36.55\00:17:40.06 us safe in his care. He protects us like the shade protects from 00:17:40.09\00:17:45.29 the heat of the day. No matter how the trials of the day may 00:17:45.33\00:17:48.90 heat up, no matter what catastrophes might befall us, 00:17:48.93\00:17:53.03 God gives us the strength to keep going. And here's this 00:17:53.07\00:17:57.77 Psalm's final promise: 00:17:57.81\00:18:00.68 God protects us from all evil, both external and internal. Evil 00:18:15.62\00:18:21.33 doesn't have to have the final say in our lives. God watches 00:18:21.36\00:18:26.67 over us constantly. His eyes are on us. He cannot look away from 00:18:26.70\00:18:32.31 those he loves. He watches our coming and our going and all in 00:18:32.34\00:18:37.45 between. He watches over our family and our children. He's 00:18:37.48\00:18:42.02 our keeper. So when you need hope for your day, when you're 00:18:42.05\00:18:46.42 discouraged, struggling or weary here's hope from the psalms, 00:18:46.45\00:18:50.86 hope from the Almighty God who made the hills and the rocks. 00:18:50.89\00:18:56.77 ¤ ¤ 00:18:56.80\00:19:11.01 David didn't only write about the hills. Notice what he says here is Psalm chapter 18 and 00:19:25.86\00:19:30.33 verse 2: 00:19:30.37\00:19:31.70 ¤ ¤ 00:19:46.11\00:19:55.36 David says God is my Rock. In times of 00:20:00.90\00:20:06.60 trouble God is our source of strength, he is our refuge where 00:20:06.63\00:20:12.37 we can find peace and safety from harm. When you hold a rock 00:20:12.41\00:20:16.85 in your hand and squeeze it hard what happens? Does it squish or 00:20:16.88\00:20:22.88 change? No, it stays strong and doesn't change and that's how 00:20:22.92\00:20:29.26 God is. Because he's so strong he can keep us safe. There are 00:20:29.29\00:20:38.33 challenges, some storms of life, that we just can't hide from. 00:20:38.37\00:20:43.37 You know the kind. The sudden illness, the financial mess, the 00:20:43.41\00:20:49.48 unexpected loss of a loved one, the heartbreaking betrayal of a 00:20:49.51\00:20:54.08 friend. These storms can sweep into our lives quickly and 00:20:54.12\00:20:59.89 suddenly or build up over time until their raging all around us 00:20:59.92\00:21:06.46 When they come they threaten to shake us to the core and 00:21:06.49\00:21:10.43 there is nowhere we can hide from them. Or is there? David 00:21:10.47\00:21:15.10 talks about a rock in whom we can take refuge. This rock is 00:21:15.14\00:21:20.28 strong, so impenetrable that it's protection ensures we 00:21:20.31\00:21:25.81 cannot be shaken even by the fiercest storm. God is our Rock. 00:21:25.85\00:21:31.69 The powerful God who created this world and everything that 00:21:31.72\00:21:35.99 exists, who has power even over death itself is the Rock we can 00:21:36.02\00:21:41.46 run to when the storms of life blow all around us. Here's what 00:21:41.50\00:21:46.80 David wrote in Psalm 62 verses 7 and 8: 00:21:46.84\00:21:50.94 We know we can trust God's power to protect because he has 00:22:06.45\00:22:11.43 proven his love. The same love that moved him to give his Son 00:22:11.46\00:22:15.96 in our place on the cross, moves him to use his power to guard 00:22:16.00\00:22:21.14 and protect us in our lives now. So when the storms blow in, and 00:22:21.17\00:22:26.78 you know they will, find your security in the Mighty Rock, the 00:22:26.81\00:22:32.15 Rock of Ages. Hide yourself in the loving and all powerful arms 00:22:32.18\00:22:37.02 of God. Trust him to keep you safe and not be shaken. Always 00:22:37.05\00:22:42.36 remember that your God loves and cares about you and your family 00:22:42.39\00:22:47.00 and all that you're going through every minute. Never 00:22:47.03\00:22:50.93 forget that your God is with you in the good days and the 00:22:50.97\00:22:54.17 difficult days. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Why 00:22:54.20\00:22:59.01 not call to him today as we pray and allow him to be your rock 00:22:59.04\00:23:03.35 and your refuge. 00:23:03.38\00:23:05.58 Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for your reminders that you are 00:23:05.61\00:23:10.25 with us.
