¤ ¤ 00:00:01.96\00:00:24.35 I'm standing at the very southern tip of Africa. Behind 00:00:24.39\00:00:28.52 me is magnificent Table Mountain one of Africa's most famous 00:00:28.56\00:00:33.19 landmarks. For centuries this sandstone mountain has welcomed 00:00:33.23\00:00:39.07 seafarers and adventurers who rounded the Cape of Good Hope 00:00:39.10\00:00:43.14 and set out to explore the vast interior that lies behind it's 00:00:43.17\00:00:48.38 massive flat-topped summit. And 50 years ago one of them, a son 00:00:48.41\00:00:55.25 of Africa performed a medical miracle right here in the shadow 00:00:55.28\00:00:58.92 of Table Mountain that stunned the medical fraternity and 00:00:58.95\00:01:03.76 changed the lives of thousands of people around the world. 00:01:03.79\00:01:07.40 I'm in Cape Town following the footsteps of Dr. Christiaan 00:01:07.43\00:01:12.57 Barnard. Stay with us to hear his inspiring story. It may 00:01:12.60\00:01:17.74 just give you a change of heart and bring you peace and 00:01:17.77\00:01:22.04 happiness. 00:01:22.08\00:01:23.71 ¤ ¤ 00:01:23.75\00:01:44.97 Africa is the second largest of the earth's seven continents 00:01:45.00\00:01:47.54 and it's a continent of superlatives when it comes to 00:01:47.57\00:01:52.07 natural wonders. And it 00:02:38.95\00:02:44.43 was in this field, medicine, that an extraordinary event took 00:02:44.46\00:02:49.33 place 50 years ago in Cape Town that stunned the world's 00:02:49.36\00:02:53.20 medical fraternity. A young South African doctor performed 00:02:53.23\00:02:58.24 a medical miracle. Dr. Christiaan Barnard performed the 00:02:58.27\00:03:03.35 world's first human-to-human heart transplant here at Groote 00:03:03.38\00:03:08.15 Schuur Hospital and by doing so he pushed the boundaries of 00:03:08.18\00:03:12.79 science into the dawn of a new medical era that has brought 00:03:12.82\00:03:15.72 life and hope to thousands of people around the world. 00:03:15.76\00:03:23.37 Christiaan Neethling Barnard was born on the 8th of November 1922 00:03:23.40\00:03:29.97 in the sleepy little town of Beaufort West in the western 00:03:30.01\00:03:34.44 province of South Africa. It's famous for its donkey carts and 00:03:34.48\00:03:38.45 they're still one of the most interesting ways to tour the 00:03:38.48\00:03:41.62 town today. Beaufort West was the first town established 00:03:41.65\00:03:46.45 in South 00:03:46.49\00:03:47.82 Africa's arid interior region called the Great Karoo and it's 00:03:47.86\00:03:51.89 known as the capital of the Karoo. Near the old town hall 00:03:51.93\00:03:57.37 in the center of Beaufort West is the Barnard family home where 00:03:57.40\00:04:01.87 young Chris grew up with his four brothers. His father, Adam 00:04:01.90\00:04:05.57 Barnard, was the minister of the local Dutch Reformed Church and 00:04:05.61\00:04:09.98 the family lived in the old church parsonage next door to 00:04:10.01\00:04:13.42 the church. One of his brothers, Abraham, died of a heart problem 00:04:13.45\00:04:18.85 at the age of five and this tragedy made a lasting 00:04:18.89\00:04:23.49 impression on young Chris. His early years were closely linked 00:04:23.53\00:04:29.70 to the old Dutch Reformed Mission Church where his father 00:04:29.73\00:04:33.44 preached and his mother played the organ. His parents were 00:04:33.47\00:04:36.71 compassionate people who ministered to the poor. Their 00:04:36.74\00:04:41.14 values and work ethic were passed on to Chris and his 00:04:41.18\00:04:44.98 brothers. The boys were encouraged to do their best and 00:04:45.01\00:04:49.32 pursue excellence in all they did. Young Chris developed a 00:04:49.35\00:04:53.49 strong inner drive and was methodical and purposeful 00:04:53.52\00:04:57.19 in all his endeavors. He also inherited his parent's 00:04:57.23\00:05:01.50 compassion for poor and oppressed people of all races 00:05:01.53\00:05:05.47 and nationalities and this remained a character trait 00:05:05.50\00:05:10.11 throughout his life. Chris attended Beaufort West Central 00:05:10.14\00:05:16.34 High School. He was a good student and applied himself to 00:05:16.38\00:05:19.71 his studies. He did well at school and in addition to 00:05:19.75\00:05:23.59 excelling in his schoolwork he also learned music and played 00:05:23.62\00:05:28.19 sports. Chris matriculated from Beaufort West Central 00:05:28.22\00:05:31.06 High School 00:05:31.09\00:05:32.43 with high grades in 1940 and decided to further his studies 00:05:32.46\00:05:37.00 at university. He decided to study medicine and so moved to 00:05:37.03\00:05:41.87 Cape Town and enrolled in the University of Cape Town Medical 00:05:41.90\00:05:46.31 School. The Barnard family wasn't wealthy but he managed 00:05:46.34\00:05:50.21 to secure a scholarship. He stayed with his older brother 00:05:50.25\00:05:54.08 and walked to the university. There was little money to spare 00:05:54.12\00:05:58.55 and they were challenging years. But Barnard applied himself to 00:05:58.59\00:06:02.96 his studies and graduated from the University of Cape Town in 00:06:02.99\00:06:08.23 1945. He completed his internship and residency 00:06:08.26\00:06:12.47 at Groote Schuur Hospital situated on the slopes of 00:06:12.50\00:06:16.00 Devil's Peak in the shadow of Table Mountain. Groote Schuur 00:06:16.04\00:06:20.54 is the chief academic hospital of the University of Cape Town's 00:06:20.58\00:06:24.75 Medical School and provides tertiary care and instruction in 00:06:24.78\00:06:29.55 all the major branches of medicine. Barnard then left Cape 00:06:29.58\00:06:34.19 Town and worked as general practitioner in Ceres, a rural 00:06:34.22\00:06:38.79 town in the Cape Province. In 1951, Barnard returned to Cape 00:06:38.83\00:06:44.53 Town where he worked in the Department of Medicine at Groote 00:06:44.57\00:06:48.90 Schuur Hospital as a registrar. He completed his master's degree 00:06:48.94\00:06:53.31 and a doctorate in Medicine in 1953 from the University of Cape 00:06:53.34\00:06:59.28 Town. In 1956, he received a two year scholarship for post 00:06:59.31\00:07:03.72 graduate training in cardiothoracic surgery at the 00:07:03.75\00:07:07.99 University of Minnesota Medical School in Minneapolis, United 00:07:08.02\00:07:12.79 States. When he returned to South Africa in 1958 Barnard was 00:07:12.83\00:07:18.13 appointed cardiothoracic surgeon at the Groote Schuur Hospital 00:07:18.17\00:07:22.00 and established the hospital's first heart unit. He introduced 00:07:22.04\00:07:26.24 open heart surgery to his home country and designed artificial 00:07:26.27\00:07:30.68 valves for the human heart. He also experimented with the 00:07:30.71\00:07:34.78 transplantation of the hearts of dogs. More than 50 dogs 00:07:34.82\00:07:40.02 received transplanted hearts. For several years Barnard 00:07:40.06\00:07:43.59 continued experimenting with animal heart transplants. With 00:07:43.63\00:07:48.43 this experience and with the availabilty of new breakthroughs 00:07:48.46\00:07:52.67 introduced by several other heart surgery pioneers, Barnard 00:07:52.70\00:07:56.77 was finally in a position to prepare for a human transplant. 00:07:56.81\00:08:01.48 And he had a patient willing to undergo the procedure. 00:08:01.51\00:08:07.75 Louis Washkansky was a 53-year- old grocer suffering from 00:08:07.78\00:08:10.89 diabetes and incurable disease. His heart was grossly enlarged 00:08:10.92\00:08:16.02 and was going to fail at any moment. There was no hope for 00:08:16.06\00:08:20.60 him. Without a new heart his days were numbered. So Chris 00:08:20.63\00:08:24.80 Barnard and his team had a desparate and willing patient in 00:08:24.83\00:08:29.34 need of a heart transplant, but they needed a suitable donor. 00:08:29.37\00:08:33.84 Now Chris Barnard and his team weren't the only surgical team 00:08:33.88\00:08:38.51 preparing to conduct a human heart transplant. At least three 00:08:38.55\00:08:43.42 American heart surgeons and their teams were also ready and 00:08:43.45\00:08:46.45 waiting to perform a human heart transplant. By the end of 1967 00:08:46.49\00:08:51.36 the research and preparation was complete. The time had come to 00:08:51.39\00:08:57.57 perform that once unthinkable act, the transplant of a human 00:08:57.60\00:09:01.44 heart from one person to another and because it was all about 00:09:01.47\00:09:06.14 the heart that legendary seat of emotion which the public and 00:09:06.17\00:09:10.45 media persisted in romanticizing there was an intense desire 00:09:10.48\00:09:15.08 among the cardiac surgeons to be at the cutting edge of 00:09:15.12\00:09:18.75 history, to perform the world's first human heart transplant. 00:09:18.79\00:09:23.12 So the race was on to be the first to perform the ultimate 00:09:23.16\00:09:29.33 operation, an operation that depended on the right mix of 00:09:29.36\00:09:34.14 skill character and circumstance The drama of the world's first 00:09:34.17\00:09:41.44 human heart transplant was played out here within the walls 00:09:41.48\00:09:46.28 of Charles Silk theater at Groote Schuur Hospital on the 00:09:46.31\00:09:49.58 3rd of December 1967. Theaters A and B are the original surgery 00:09:49.62\00:09:57.43 theaters used for the first human heart transplant. 00:09:57.46\00:10:00.63 Everything in them is laid out just as it was when the 00:10:00.66\00:10:05.50 pioneering operation took place here 50 years ago. The first 00:10:05.53\00:10:10.67 human heart transplant was one of the greatest moments in 00:10:10.71\00:10:15.01 medical history and was made possible by an extraordinary 00:10:15.04\00:10:18.68 interplay of scientific dedication, human courage and 00:10:18.71\00:10:23.59 generosity and a timely chain of events. Saturday the 2nd of 00:10:23.62\00:10:32.09 December 1967 was a free summer's day in Cape Town. The 00:10:32.13\00:10:36.77 locals were out in force enjoying the pre-Christmas 00:10:36.80\00:10:40.04 bustle. Among them was 25-year- old Denise Darvall. She and her 00:10:40.07\00:10:46.44 family were enjoying a shopping day together preparing for 00:10:46.47\00:10:50.11 Christmas and the festive season They were oblivious of the 00:10:50.15\00:10:54.72 tragedy about to unfold that would claim Denise's life and 00:10:54.75\00:10:59.25 set in motion a chain of events that would change the face of 00:10:59.29\00:11:03.53 open heart surgery forever. On that fateful day Denise Darvall 00:11:03.56\00:11:11.63 and her mother stopped here on main road Salt River to buy a 00:11:11.67\00:11:15.44 a cream cake for their afternoon tea. As they were crossing the 00:11:15.47\00:11:19.27 road right here they were struck by a drunk driver. Both Denise 00:11:19.31\00:11:24.65 and her mother were fatally injured. Shortly after the 00:11:24.68\00:11:29.38 accident which took place just a kilometer from Groote Schuur 00:11:29.42\00:11:33.29 Hospital Ann Washkansky drove past the accident scene on her 00:11:33.32\00:11:38.46 way back from visiting her dying husband in the hospital. She 00:11:38.49\00:11:43.57 was a sensitive woman and averted her gaze from the scene 00:11:43.60\00:11:46.74 of the fatal accident. Little did she realize that within 12 00:11:46.77\00:11:51.74 hours one of the broken bodies lying in the road would give her 00:11:51.77\00:11:55.71 husband a heart and another chance at life. Denise Darvall 00:11:55.74\00:12:01.98 was a gentle and giving young woman. Her tragic and unexpected 00:12:02.02\00:12:07.09 death brought great sorrow to her family. But they showed 00:12:07.12\00:12:11.96 great courage and compassion in donating her heart to save the 00:12:11.99\00:12:16.23 life of another person. Her heart would become the first 00:12:16.26\00:12:21.14 heart selflessly donated to save another person's life and a 00:12:21.17\00:12:26.24 heart which subsequently played a vital role in the advancement 00:12:26.27\00:12:30.88 of medical knowledge. After being declared brain dead, 00:12:30.91\00:12:35.45 Denise Darvall was brought here to theater B, the donor theater, 00:12:35.48\00:12:39.22 shortly after midnight. She was prepared for surgery by Dr. 00:12:39.25\00:12:44.23 Marius Barnard and his team. At 3 a.m. in theater A the 00:12:44.26\00:12:49.46 operation lasted 4-3/4 hours and involved a team of 30 00:12:49.50\00:12:54.54 surgeons, anesthetists, nurses and technicians. At precisely 00:12:54.57\00:12:59.91 6:13 a.m. her heart was carefully sewn into place in 00:12:59.94\00:13:03.58 place in recipient Louis Washkansky's chest by Dr. Chris 00:13:03.61\00:13:08.65 Barnard. Louis Washkansky's new heart began to beat strongly and 00:13:08.68\00:13:13.39 Dr. Chris Barnard turned to his team and said, It's going to 00:13:13.42\00:13:17.63 work. And work it did. Washkansky survived the 00:13:17.66\00:13:23.47 operation. His new heart functioned normally for 18 days. 00:13:23.50\00:13:27.70 However, he succumbed to pneumonia as he was taking 00:13:27.74\00:13:31.87 immunosuppressive drugs. The drugs insured that Washkansky's 00:13:31.91\00:13:36.34 body didn't reject the new heart but sadly weakened his immune 00:13:36.38\00:13:41.62 system and he had no defense against infection. Though the 00:13:41.65\00:13:47.52 first patient with the heart of another human being survived 00:13:47.56\00:13:51.29 only a little more than two weeks, Barnard had passed a 00:13:51.33\00:13:56.03 milestone in a new field of life-extending surgery. This 00:13:56.06\00:14:00.44 first transplant was and remains the most publicized event in 00:14:00.47\00:14:05.54 world medical history. Chris Barnard became a household name 00:14:05.57\00:14:11.48 and was celebrated around the world for his accomplishment. 00:14:11.51\00:14:14.28 Monarchs, presidents and prime ministers honored him. He was 00:14:14.32\00:14:19.65 photogenic and enjoyed the media attention following the 00:14:19.69\00:14:23.02 operations. Dr. Chris Barnard continued to perform heart 00:14:23.06\00:14:27.96 transplants. Another transplant operation was conducted less 00:14:28.00\00:14:32.27 than a month later on the 2nd of January 1968 and the patient, 00:14:32.30\00:14:37.11 Philip Blaiberg, survived for 570 days or 19 months. And then 00:14:37.14\00:14:43.11 Dirk van Zyl who received a new heart by Chris Barnard in 1971 00:14:43.14\00:14:48.68 was the longest lived heart transplant patient surviving 00:14:48.72\00:14:52.79 over 23 years. Throughout his life Chris Barnard championed 00:14:52.82\00:14:58.26 the cause of the poor and the oppressed. He exhibited an 00:14:58.29\00:15:02.26 amazing blend of vision, intelligence and kindness, 00:15:02.30\00:15:07.27 tempered by human frailties. But despite these frailties he 00:15:07.30\00:15:11.34 made the world a better place particularly for those who need 00:15:11.37\00:15:16.11 a new heart. And that's what he'll always be remembered for. 00:15:16.14\00:15:20.45 The good doctor who could give people hope, the one who could 00:15:20.48\00:15:25.35 pull patients back from the brink of death, who give them 00:15:25.39\00:15:28.99 new hearts, that symbol of love and life and who could give them 00:15:29.02\00:15:34.23 their lives back. And in a sense that's what we all need. Now I 00:15:34.26\00:15:42.10 know it may seem hard to believe but that's the reality. When we 00:15:42.14\00:15:46.84 find out the true condition and nature of our hearts we discover 00:15:46.88\00:15:51.55 we all need a new heart, all of us, including you and me. 00:15:51.58\00:15:56.42 When the Bible talks about the human heart, it refers to the 00:15:56.45\00:16:01.42 center of a person's being involving the mind, the emotions 00:16:01.46\00:16:06.03 the reason, the will, the life, the whole being, who we really 00:16:06.06\00:16:13.44 are. And the Bible has a lot to say about the condition and 00:16:13.47\00:16:16.84 nature of our hearts. Notice what it says in Genesis 00:16:16.87\00:16:20.44 chapter 6 and verse 5: 00:16:20.48\00:16:22.68 A way back, soon after creation after sin entered into our world 00:16:34.22\00:16:40.10 people's hearts were focused on evil and as a result they made 00:16:40.13\00:16:44.07 mistakes and did bad things and they did it regularly. It was a 00:16:44.10\00:16:49.00 way of life. Notice what the Bible says in Jeremiah 00:16:49.04\00:16:52.84 chapter 17, verses 9 and 10: 00:16:52.87\00:16:56.54 God says that when he searches our hearts, when he examines our 00:17:13.43\00:17:17.27 hearts, the prognosis isn't good He said that our hearts are 00:17:17.30\00:17:22.57 deceitful above all things. They're diseased and discolored. 00:17:22.60\00:17:26.51 And Jesus emphasizes this too. Notice what he says in Mark 00:17:26.54\00:17:30.85 chapter 7 verses 21 and 22: 00:17:30.88\00:17:33.78 Jesus reminds us that our hearts are deceitful, sick and full of 00:17:55.20\00:18:01.71 sin. Like Louis Washkansky we are suffering from serious and 00:18:01.74\00:18:06.78 incurable heart disease. You might say we're all in need of a 00:18:06.82\00:18:11.09 spiritual heart transplant. And deep down in our hearts we know 00:18:11.12\00:18:16.59 that's true. It doesn't matter whether we're rich or poor, 00:18:16.62\00:18:19.69 respectable school, citizenship, social status and ethnicity are 00:18:19.73\00:18:26.80 inconsequential. We all make mistakes and do bad things and 00:18:26.84\00:18:32.27 we do it regularly. Yes as sinners, all of us need a new 00:18:32.31\00:18:38.88 heart. Now we know that open heart surgery, heart transplant 00:18:38.91\00:18:43.92 surgery is among the most delicate and difficult 00:18:43.95\00:18:46.59 procedures. But for those of us with damaged hearts and in 00:18:46.62\00:18:51.23 desperate need of a spiritual heart transplant our life, 00:18:51.26\00:18:55.33 eternity depends on it. So of course, we want the best and 00:18:55.36\00:19:01.10 most qualified surgeon. And here's the good news. God, the 00:19:01.14\00:19:06.14 great physician is willing and able to give us a new heart. Yes 00:19:06.17\00:19:11.05 he promised us to do so if we will ask him. Here's what God 00:19:11.08\00:19:15.75 says in Ezekiel chapter 36 verses 26 and 27: 00:19:15.78\00:19:20.66 God promises that he will do this decisive, miraculous 00:19:41.34\00:19:46.08 transplant, this heart replacement. If we're going to 00:19:46.11\00:19:50.65 survive our serious spiritual heart condition, the old heart 00:19:50.69\00:19:55.66 has to be taken out and a new heart has to be put in. And we 00:19:55.69\00:20:00.56 can't do that surgery ourselves. But God can. In fact, only God 00:20:00.60\00:20:06.67 can perform this procedure and he's promised to do it for us. 00:20:06.70\00:20:10.77 He loves us and only wants what's best for us. He's done 00:20:10.81\00:20:17.48 everything to make it possible for us to get a new heart. He 00:20:17.51\00:20:21.32 even gave his Son Jesus so that we can get our life back again. 00:20:21.35\00:20:26.32 On the cross Jesus paid the price for our sin so that we 00:20:26.35\00:20:30.99 could be given this new heart. And he promises that if we 00:20:31.03\00:20:34.73 accept him he will give us a new start in life. He will take our 00:20:34.76\00:20:39.90 slate and erase all the mistakes we've made, all the evil and sin 00:20:39.93\00:20:44.91 and replace it with good. He takes our hearts that have been 00:20:44.94\00:20:49.74 hardened by the hurt and sin and evil in the world and he gives 00:20:49.78\00:20:54.18 us new hearts of flesh, hearts that are able to accept his love 00:20:54.22\00:20:58.95 and share it. Yes, God changes us. He transforms us by giving 00:20:58.99\00:21:05.03 us a new heart. He can take a heart that is broken, impure or 00:21:05.06\00:21:10.23 failed and replace it with a heart that is whole, pure and 00:21:10.27\00:21:15.20 purposeful. To have a new heart is to have a new mind, new 00:21:15.24\00:21:20.51 purposes, new motives. So what is the sign of a new heart? 00:21:20.54\00:21:26.25 A changed life. God wants to see you happy and fulfilled and so 00:21:26.28\00:21:32.89 he takes an active role in creating your new heart and 00:21:32.92\00:21:37.26 brings order to the chaos and sadness in our lives. And then 00:21:37.29\00:21:42.06 everything that we have, right thinking and right living, a 00:21:42.10\00:21:46.53 clean slate and a fresh start, new hope and new energy all come 00:21:46.57\00:21:52.21 from God by way of Jesus Christ. Basically, God gives us a heart 00:21:52.24\00:21:59.18 like Christ's. Tara Storch understands this miracle as much 00:21:59.21\00:22:05.32 as anyone can. In the spring of 2010, her 13-year-old daughter 00:22:05.35\00:22:10.96 Taylor lost her life in a skiing accident. What followed for Tara 00:22:10.99\00:22:17.10 and her husband, Todd, was every parent's worst nightmare. 00:22:17.13\00:22:20.74 A funeral, a burial, a flood of questions and tears. They 00:22:20.77\00:22:27.04 decided to donate their daughter's organs to needy 00:22:27.08\00:22:30.51 patients. Few people needed a new heart more than Patricia 00:22:30.55\00:22:35.48 Winters. Her heart had begun to fail five years earlier leaving 00:22:35.52\00:22:40.16 her two weak to do much more than sleep. Taylor's heart gave 00:22:40.19\00:22:45.39 Patricia a fresh start on life. Tara had only one request. 00:22:45.43\00:22:50.17 She wanted to hear the heart of her daughter. She and Todd 00:22:50.20\00:22:54.97 flew to Patricia's hometown to listen to Taylor's heart. The 00:22:55.00\00:22:59.61 two mothers embraced for a long time. Then Patricia offered Tara 00:22:59.64\00:23:04.48 and Todd a stethoscope. When they listened to the healthy 00:23:04.51\00:23:08.78 rhythm, the healthy heart beat, whose heart did they hear. Did 00:23:08.82\00:23:13.86 they not hear the still beating heart of their daughter. It's 00:23:13.89\00:23:18.19 inside a different body, but the heart is the heart of their 00:23:18.23\00:23:22.90 child. When God listens to your heart does he hear the still 00:23:22.93\00:23:28.34 beating heart of his Son. God has ambitious plans for your 00:23:28.37\00:23:33.91 life, now and forever. And those plans involve him giving you a 00:23:33.94\00:23:39.41 new heart, a heart like Christ's If you'd like to follow God's 00:23:39.45\00:23:43.99 plan for your life and experience the peace, joy and 00:23:44.02\00:23:48.29 happiness he has in store for you, why not ask him for a new 00:23:48.32\00:23:53.50 heart. A heart that will be not for 18 days, not for 19 months 00:23:53.53\00:23:57.50 or even 23 years, but a heart that will be for eternity. Why 00:23:57.53\00:24:04.41 not ask him for a new heart right now as we pray? 00:24:04.44\00:24:08.58 Our dear Heavenly Father, we recognize that we've made 00:24:08.61\00:24:14.15 mistakes in our lives and done things that we're not proud of. 00:24:14.18\00:24:17.92 We know that our hearts are damaged and that only you can 00:24:17.95\00:24:22.39 repair them. We are so grateful that you are a loving God and 00:24:22.42\00:24:27.63 that you have a plan for each of our lives. We thank you for your 00:24:27.66\00:24:32.40 promise to give us new hearts that will beat for eternity.
