They were crammed together in terrible 00:00:25.45\00:00:29.72 conditions. They were often tortured and beaten. Life was 00:00:29.76\00:00:34.30 a daily struggle against humiliation, hunger, and 00:00:34.33\00:00:40.74 disease. It's the sixth busiest airport in the 00:01:35.62\00:01:40.66 world and the second busiest in Asia. Each week about 7000 00:01:40.70\00:01:45.83 flights land or depart from Changi or about one every 90 00:01:45.87\00:01:51.21 seconds with about 60 million passengers passing through the 00:01:51.24\00:01:57.21 airport each year. But Changi is more than just an airport. It's 00:01:57.25\00:02:01.78 a destination in its own right with a multitude of shopping, 00:02:01.82\00:02:06.45 dining and entertaining experiences on offer at the 00:02:06.49\00:02:11.09 airports four terminals. It's not surprising that it's 00:02:11.13\00:02:14.96 currently rated the world's best airport, a rating it's held for 00:02:15.00\00:02:20.50 the past five years. This airport has blossomed and boomed 00:02:20.54\00:02:26.17 over the past few decades, so it's not surprising that the 00:02:26.21\00:02:30.58 first airfield at Changi lacked the sophistication and marvelous 00:02:30.61\00:02:35.62 attractions of today's airport. But what is surprising is that 00:02:35.65\00:02:40.39 the very first airfield here at Changi was initiated by the 00:02:40.42\00:02:45.39 occupying imperial Japanese forces after the fall of 00:02:45.43\00:02:48.93 Singapore in 1942 and the first landing strips were built by 00:02:48.96\00:02:54.74 British and Australian POWs who were used as forced laborers. 00:02:54.77\00:02:59.51 When Singapore fell to the Japanese on the 15th of February 00:02:59.54\00:03:04.38 1942, it was Britain's greatest military defeat and the largest 00:03:04.41\00:03:09.48 surrender of troops in British history. Around 80,000 British, 00:03:09.52\00:03:14.46 Indian and Australian troops based in Singapore became 00:03:14.49\00:03:19.26 prisoners of war. The Japanese were astounded at the sheer 00:03:19.29\00:03:23.33 number of prisoners they suddenly found themselves with. 00:03:23.37\00:03:28.44 Clearly they had to do something with them and quickly. They 00:03:28.47\00:03:32.07 rapidly made a decision to segregate them along racial 00:03:32.11\00:03:35.28 lines and march them to Changi in the south of the island. Over 00:03:35.31\00:03:40.08 50,000 prisoners made that journey. They were crammed 00:03:40.12\00:03:45.32 together in terrible living conditions in a number of 00:03:45.35\00:03:48.72 barracks in the area. They were often tortured and beaten. Life 00:03:48.76\00:03:54.16 was a daily struggle against humiliation, hunger, and 00:03:54.20\00:03:59.80 disease. Changi was a living hell. Yet it was here in one of 00:03:59.83\00:04:04.24 history's darkest hours where conditions were at their worst 00:04:04.27\00:04:09.04 that we find a story that is heroic, moving and most of all 00:04:09.08\00:04:14.18 inspirational. In this dreadful place, one man, a British bombardier, brought 00:04:14.22\00:04:20.36 hope and peace to the broken and dying men of Changi. And he did 00:04:20.39\00:04:25.13 it in the most unusual way. Stanley Warren was born in 00:04:25.16\00:04:31.23 England in 1917. He was a talented artist and a religious 00:04:31.27\00:04:37.01 man. Stanley was employed as a commercial designer producing 00:04:37.04\00:04:40.84 poster ads with the Granada organization before the war. In 00:04:40.88\00:04:45.81 1940 he enlisted in the army to join the fight against Nazi 00:04:45.85\00:04:51.52 Germany. He was posted to the Royal Regiment of Artillery as 00:04:51.55\00:04:55.62 an observation post assistant. His responsibilities included 00:04:55.66\00:04:59.89 having to make quick drawings of panoramas that were used to 00:04:59.93\00:05:04.57 plot targets for the artillery guns. In early 1942, he was 00:05:04.60\00:05:10.44 posted overseas to Malaya with the 15th Field Regiment Royal 00:05:10.47\00:05:15.58 Artillery after the Japanese had invaded Malaya and Thailand 00:05:15.61\00:05:20.48 and Pearl Harbor had been bombed. On arrival their fight 00:05:20.52\00:05:25.85 against the Japanese was brutal and short lived. Soon his 00:05:25.89\00:05:30.03 battalion began retreating to Singapore. By the 12th of 00:05:30.06\00:05:34.40 February the situation in Singapore was desperate and 00:05:34.43\00:05:38.77 Lieutenant-General Arthur Percival who was in charge of 00:05:38.80\00:05:41.77 the British-Malaya command ordered the troops into 00:05:41.80\00:05:45.11 Singapore town. Three days later the British surrendered 00:05:45.14\00:05:50.18 and Stanley was interned as a prisoner of war at Robert's 00:05:50.21\00:05:54.15 Barracks in Changi. Stanley joined other POWs who were 00:05:54.18\00:05:59.59 forced to work around Singapore repairing the damage caused by 00:05:59.62\00:06:03.73 the Japanese attacks and restoring essential services to 00:06:03.76\00:06:08.03 working order again. They endured appalling conditions 00:06:08.06\00:06:12.77 of overwork, starvation, sickness and torture. Disease 00:06:12.80\00:06:18.77 was widespread and medical supplies were scarce. As a 00:06:18.81\00:06:23.51 result of the extreme hard labor and the horrific conditions, the 00:06:23.55\00:06:28.18 men's morale and health deteriorated rapidly. Stanley 00:06:28.22\00:06:34.19 suffered terribly. He developed a severe kidney disorder that 00:06:34.22\00:06:39.66 was complicated by dysentery and malnutrition. He was close to 00:06:39.69\00:06:44.60 death and was finally admitted to the Robert's Barracks 00:06:44.63\00:06:48.34 hospital in a comatose state. Later he was transferred to the 00:06:48.37\00:06:52.54 dysentery wing at Block 151. The building housed a chapel 00:06:52.57\00:06:58.81 that the prisoners had built and dedicated to St. Luke, the Bible 00:06:58.85\00:07:03.99 physician. While recuperating Stanley heard the sound of 00:07:04.02\00:07:08.89 Australian prisoners singing hymns and carols in the chapel 00:07:08.92\00:07:12.33 and the sound of those voices inspired him to use his artistic 00:07:12.36\00:07:19.20 talents to create a symbol that would bring hope and peace to 00:07:19.23\00:07:23.87 his fellow prisoners. As soon as he was strong enough, Stanley 00:07:23.91\00:07:29.14 joined the choir and agreed to paint a series of murals on the 00:07:29.18\00:07:33.52 chapel walls. He wondered what he could paint that would lift 00:07:33.55\00:07:39.15 the prisoners spirits and give them hope in their darkest hour. 00:07:39.19\00:07:42.72 Then he realized that there was only one source of lasting hope 00:07:42.76\00:07:48.86 and peace. He requested a Bible and focused on the four gospels, 00:07:48.90\00:07:53.70 Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John from which he drew his 00:07:53.74\00:07:57.64 inspiration. He decided to paint a series of murals that would 00:07:57.67\00:08:03.14 show the very heart of Christian belief. At the time when Stanley 00:08:03.18\00:08:08.42 was preparing his draft drawings of the murals, the Japanese 00:08:08.45\00:08:14.42 began an action which would become infamous as the 00:08:14.46\00:08:17.49 bombardier Barracks incident. The Japanese demanded the 00:08:17.53\00:08:22.30 prisoners' leaders sign a no escape pledge. This was shortly after the recapture 00:08:22.33\00:08:27.60 of four escaped soldiers. This type of declaration is against 00:08:27.64\00:08:33.11 the Geneva Convention and the prisoners' leaders rightly 00:08:33.14\00:08:37.18 refused to sign. The Japanese response was to have the four 00:08:37.21\00:08:41.32 recaptured soldiers executed on Changi Beach. Then 17,000 00:08:41.35\00:08:47.92 prisoners were ordered from their barracks and forced to 00:08:47.96\00:08:51.33 assemble in Selarang Barracks Square. They had to stand there 00:08:51.36\00:08:55.43 in the open for nearly five days exposed to the elements without 00:08:55.46\00:09:00.47 water or sanitation until the no escape pledge was signed. 00:09:00.50\00:09:05.54 Against this backdrop Stanley began to paint the Changi Murals 00:09:05.57\00:09:10.78 One of the biggest challenges he faced was finding paint and 00:09:10.81\00:09:16.35 brushes. But the prisoners rallied and at risk of their 00:09:16.38\00:09:20.92 lives they managed to scrounge paint, make brushes from human 00:09:20.96\00:09:25.29 hair and gather materials for the project. Despite still being 00:09:25.33\00:09:32.27 very ill Stanley began to work on the first mural. His illness 00:09:32.30\00:09:36.54 and meager diet meant that he could only paint for a limited 00:09:36.57\00:09:40.28 period each day. For perhaps 10 to 15 minutes at a time followed 00:09:40.31\00:09:45.81 by a rest. He fainted often which also slowed his progress. 00:09:45.85\00:09:51.59 Stanley decided to use the same technique he used when he worked 00:09:51.62\00:09:57.79 as a cinema billboard artist before the war. He drew in clear 00:09:57.83\00:10:03.93 bold outlines so that the murals could be seen at a glance or 00:10:03.97\00:10:08.10 from a distance. To compensate as much as he could for the lack 00:10:08.14\00:10:12.27 of available color he resorted to large brush strokes and areas 00:10:12.31\00:10:18.28 of solid color. The result was to be murals of very low tones. 00:10:18.31\00:10:24.22 The first mural Stanley painted featured the nativity or birth 00:10:24.25\00:10:29.46 of Christ. He painted each of the three Wiseman who presented 00:10:29.49\00:10:34.23 gifts to the Baby Jesus as being from different racial groups. 00:10:34.26\00:10:38.53 The figure holding the cup is Asian, the robed and turbaned 00:10:38.57\00:10:43.91 Wiseman kneeling at the front is middle eastern and the third 00:10:43.94\00:10:48.24 Wiseman is European. This helped convey the concept of 00:10:48.28\00:10:52.68 universality, that we're all equal and part of the one human 00:10:52.71\00:10:58.05 family that shares this planet. Above the mural he painted the 00:10:58.09\00:11:03.59 words that the angels used to announce the birth of Jesus - 00:11:03.63\00:11:09.26 Pease on Earth to Men of Goodwill. Despite serious 00:11:09.30\00:11:13.30 illness Stanley persevered and managed to complete the mural 00:11:13.34\00:11:17.77 in time for Christmas. This lifted the spirits of the 00:11:17.81\00:11:21.71 prisoners. That Christmas the chapel was absolutely packed and 00:11:21.74\00:11:28.35 others stood outside and listened to the service and 00:11:28.38\00:11:31.29 hymns. There was peace in Changi Prison that great Christmas of 00:11:31.32\00:11:38.43 1942 and in the hearts of many of the POWs as well. And the 00:11:38.46\00:11:43.13 fact that his nativity mural contributed to that made Stanley 00:11:43.16\00:11:48.20 glad. Stanley feared that he would die before he completed 00:11:48.24\00:11:54.01 the mural project so he decided to paint the ascension of Jesus 00:11:54.04\00:11:59.85 return to heaven next after the nativity so that the chapel 00:11:59.88\00:12:04.99 would at least have two murals representing the beginning and 00:12:05.02\00:12:09.62 the end of Christ's time on earth. Fortunately his health 00:12:09.66\00:12:15.10 improved and he was able to complete the second mural on 00:12:15.13\00:12:18.93 another wall within several weeks. The ascension mural 00:12:18.97\00:12:24.14 features the risen Christ saying to his disciples Go and Teach 00:12:24.17\00:12:27.98 the Nations. I Am With You. The third mural to be painted was 00:12:28.01\00:12:35.48 crucifixion and Stanley deliberately chose slaves to 00:12:35.52\00:12:40.52 carry out the crucifixion. The slaves, clad only in loin cloths 00:12:40.56\00:12:45.43 were a direct reference to the prisoners' own conditions. Loin 00:12:45.46\00:12:51.70 cloths is what many of them wore But there's an additional subtle 00:12:51.73\00:12:56.14 more important message here. By using slaves Stanley was also 00:12:56.17\00:13:01.21 inferring that the Japanese soldiers were under orders when 00:13:01.24\00:13:05.11 they carried out the many atrocities that they committed. 00:13:05.15\00:13:08.08 Stanley was a committed Christian and in this mural he 00:13:08.12\00:13:12.82 was forgiving his captors for the mistreatment of the POWS. 00:13:12.85\00:13:16.62 Above the mural he painted the words, Father Forgive Them, They 00:13:16.66\00:13:22.06 Know Not What They Do. To emphasize the concept of 00:13:22.10\00:13:27.14 forgiveness Stanley painted Jesus with his eyes closed so 00:13:27.17\00:13:30.54 that he wouldn't see and recognize those who were harming 00:13:30.57\00:13:34.14 him. He wouldn't hold it against them. That's true forgiveness. 00:13:34.18\00:13:39.58 The message of this crucifixion mural was so powerful that even 00:13:39.61\00:13:44.72 the Japanese guards would come into the chapel and gaze up at 00:13:44.75\00:13:49.39 it. And whenever the chaplains met with small groups of 00:13:49.42\00:13:53.53 prisoners they chose to stand under this mural. Next came the 00:13:53.56\00:14:00.37 painting of the last supper. The mural depicts Christ sharing 00:14:00.40\00:14:05.87 the very first communion with his disciples before his 00:14:05.91\00:14:08.94 betrayal by Judas Iscariot and his subsequent torture and 00:14:08.98\00:14:14.65 crucifixion. The inscription reads This Is My Blood of the 00:14:14.68\00:14:18.65 New Testament Which Is Shed For Many. Christ was telling of the 00:14:18.69\00:14:23.99 suffering and death that he was soon to endure. The prisoners 00:14:24.03\00:14:29.06 found hope and affinity in this suffering Messiah. They felt 00:14:29.10\00:14:33.87 he understood their situation and that brought them comfort. 00:14:33.90\00:14:38.57 The final mural shows an aged St. Luke in prison writing his 00:14:38.61\00:14:44.81 gospel while a Roman centurion and others watch on. The walls 00:14:44.85\00:14:48.95 of the prison are broken down to show that the human spirits 00:14:48.98\00:14:53.42 and true hope cannot be contained. Christ's word would 00:14:53.46\00:14:58.76 go out to the world despite imprisonment. The Changi murals 00:14:58.79\00:15:03.93 were completed by May 1943. Their effect on the atmosphere 00:15:03.97\00:15:09.10 in the prison camp was quite remarkable. In that living hell, 00:15:09.14\00:15:13.98 in one of history's darkest hours when conditions were at 00:15:14.01\00:15:19.31 their worst Stanley Warren's paintings boosted the moral of 00:15:19.35\00:15:23.59 the men, brought them spiritual uplift, provided them peace and 00:15:23.62\00:15:28.86 gave them hope. The murals and their message played a role in 00:15:28.89\00:15:33.76 the survival of many Changi POWs After he started painting the 00:15:33.80\00:15:39.47 murals Stanley was informed that his work party was to be sent 00:15:39.50\00:15:45.31 north to work on the Thai-Burma railway. The Colonel in charge 00:15:45.34\00:15:49.04 of the hospital who was aware of his work on the murals 00:15:49.08\00:15:52.51 intervened to have Stanley transferred back to the hospital 00:15:52.55\00:15:56.38 so that he could continue his work in the chapel. Most of 00:15:56.42\00:16:01.09 Stanley's unit who went to the Thai-Burma railway never 00:16:01.12\00:16:04.89 returned. If Stanley went in his weakened condition he most 00:16:04.93\00:16:09.96 certainly would have died there. So the murals very directly 00:16:10.00\00:16:15.67 saved his life in a way he could never have foreseen. After the 00:16:15.70\00:16:21.18 war Stanley returned to England where he married and became an 00:16:21.21\00:16:24.25 art teacher at a school in London. Meanwhile St. Luke's 00:16:24.28\00:16:28.92 chapel at Changi was turned into a storeroom. The murals were 00:16:28.95\00:16:34.02 painted over and forgotten. And the Changi murals remained 00:16:34.06\00:16:38.93 forgotten for 13 years until an unnamed RAF national serviceman 00:16:38.96\00:16:45.40 was told to clean up the store room which had served as the 00:16:45.43\00:16:48.87 POWs chapel. He noticed that some streaks of color lay under 00:16:48.90\00:16:54.08 the outer coat of paint and reported it to his officer who 00:16:54.11\00:16:59.15 realized the importance of the discovery. The outer coat of 00:16:59.18\00:17:03.39 paint was carefully removed revealing the five murals, but 00:17:03.42\00:17:08.76 there was no signature on any of the murals and so the identity 00:17:08.79\00:17:12.69 of the artist was a mystery. An all out search was then put into 00:17:12.73\00:17:17.63 operation involving the national press in Britain. In February 00:17:17.67\00:17:23.14 1959 Stanley Warren was finally found living in London with his 00:17:23.17\00:17:28.68 wife and son still teaching his beloved art. The RAF contacted 00:17:28.71\00:17:35.38 Stanley and persuaded him to make three trips back to 00:17:35.42\00:17:38.85 Singapore to restore his murals. And today, 60 years later, 00:17:38.89\00:17:44.36 Stanley Warren's Changi murals continue to inspire people with 00:17:44.39\00:17:50.20 their enduring message of hope just as they did for hundreds of 00:17:50.23\00:17:54.30 his fellow prisoners of war back in the darkest days of World War 00:17:54.34\00:17:59.84 II. What is it about hope that's so important to us as humans and 00:17:59.87\00:18:08.38 our well-being. It's said we can go three weeks without food, 00:18:08.42\00:18:14.62 three days without water, three minutes without oxygen, 00:18:14.66\00:18:17.06 but how long can we exist without hope. The loss of hope 00:18:17.09\00:18:22.00 is a terrible thing. Without hope life's challenges bring 00:18:22.03\00:18:27.04 discouragement, despair, depression and even death. 00:18:27.07\00:18:30.97 Without hope we are broken people. That's why the Bible 00:18:31.01\00:18:36.75 lists hope as one of the three great Christian virtues. 00:18:36.78\00:18:40.68 It links hope to faith and love and it indicates that these 00:18:40.72\00:18:46.09 three virtues are amongst the most important gifts that God 00:18:46.12\00:18:49.66 gives us and that they will remain or last. Notice what the 00:18:49.69\00:18:54.83 Bible says in 1 Corinthians chapter 13 and verse 13: 00:18:54.86\00:18:59.93 So there you have them, faith, hope and love. These are three 00:19:08.04\00:19:14.28 gifts that God gives us and they are linked, they're united. What 00:19:14.32\00:19:19.59 happens to one happens to all and what happens is that they 00:19:19.62\00:19:24.66 remain, they never end. Many people understand hope is 00:19:24.69\00:19:28.76 wishful thinking, a desire for something they may or may not 00:19:28.80\00:19:33.44 receive as in, I hope something will happen. Like I hope I get a 00:19:33.47\00:19:39.37 new job or I hope it'll be a sunny day tomorrow, but not 00:19:39.41\00:19:44.31 knowing if they'll happen or not But this is not what the Bible 00:19:44.35\00:19:48.15 means by hope. The Bible definition of hope is confident 00:19:48.18\00:19:53.32 expectation. It refers to a desire for something we are 00:19:53.36\00:19:58.19 certain to receive, an assurance concerning the future. The 00:19:58.23\00:20:03.97 Christian hope is based upon what God has already done in the 00:20:04.00\00:20:08.70 completed work of Jesus. It's built on fact. This is true hope 00:20:08.74\00:20:14.51 It's far greater than just a wish or a desire. This is hope 00:20:14.54\00:20:20.15 that lasts forever and this is what Stanley Warren communicated 00:20:20.18\00:20:25.55 in his murals. He simply told the story of Jesus. He pictured 00:20:25.59\00:20:31.19 the most important events in his life, the very heart of 00:20:31.23\00:20:34.56 Christian belief. He brought hope into the lives of the POWs 00:20:34.60\00:20:39.23 at Changi death camp by communicating faith, hope and 00:20:39.27\00:20:44.64 love. In his first mural featuring the nativity or birth 00:20:44.67\00:20:49.64 of Christ Stanley showed that God is not far away like some 00:20:49.68\00:20:55.42 uncaring absent landlord. Rather in Jesus Christ he came to this 00:20:55.45\00:21:01.29 planet of ours and became intimately and actively involved 00:21:01.32\00:21:05.66 in providing a solution to the problems we face. And right 00:21:05.69\00:21:10.67 there when Jesus was born we are reminded of what's really 00:21:10.70\00:21:14.47 behind our major problems. Notice what God said regarding 00:21:14.50\00:21:18.81 Mary and the birth of Jesus in Matthew chapter 1 and verse 21: 00:21:18.84\00:21:23.35 Jesus came to this planet for one purpose, to save us from our 00:21:33.96\00:21:40.10 sins. The Bible says that because of the wrong things we 00:21:40.13\00:21:43.97 do everyone falls short of who God wants us to be. Because of 00:21:44.00\00:21:48.80 the wrong things we do sin separates us from God, but Jesus 00:21:48.84\00:21:54.54 came to earth over 2000 years ago to pay the price for our 00:21:54.58\00:21:59.81 sins. That's why he came and that's the message of hope that 00:21:59.85\00:22:03.65 Stanley shared in his nativity mural. Then in the mural of the 00:22:03.69\00:22:08.86 last supper Stanley shared how on the Thursday before his 00:22:08.89\00:22:12.96 execution Jesus sat down at the table with his disciples to eat 00:22:12.99\00:22:17.80 his final meal before his crucifixion and resurrection. 00:22:17.83\00:22:21.24 The last supper was very significant because Jesus showed 00:22:21.27\00:22:26.17 his disciples he was about to become the Passover Lamb of God. 00:22:26.21\00:22:31.45 His shed blood would open the door to freedom. His followers 00:22:31.48\00:22:35.98 would exchange slavery to sin and death for eternal life in 00:22:36.02\00:22:40.82 God's kingdom. This mural carries a powerful message of 00:22:40.86\00:22:45.49 hope to the prisoners here as they were literally slaves. This 00:22:45.53\00:22:50.33 mural gave those slaves hope. The crucifixion mural continued 00:22:50.37\00:22:55.80 the message of hope for those prisoners in Changi. When Jesus 00:22:55.84\00:23:00.08 died in our place on the cross, he paid the penalty for our sins 00:23:00.11\00:23:04.61 He broke the power of sin and death and created a new 00:23:04.65\00:23:09.38 relationship with God for us and that brings true freedom. No 00:23:09.42\00:23:15.86 matter what our circumstances, no matter what mistakes we've 00:23:15.89\00:23:19.53 made, we can have the assurance that our sins are forgiven if we 00:23:19.56\00:23:25.03 bring them to the cross and leave them there. Next came the 00:23:25.07\00:23:30.61 resurrection mural. Here Stanley shared with his fellow prisoners 00:23:30.64\00:23:34.81 that by rising from the dead Christ promised that new life 00:23:34.84\00:23:39.11 became sure and certain. Even though they were facing death, 00:23:39.15\00:23:43.95 Stanley's resurrection mural gave these prisoners hope, a 00:23:43.99\00:23:49.22 living hope of eternal life through Jesus Christ. And so 00:23:49.26\00:23:53.73 through all their challenges and persecution Stanley Warren and 00:23:53.76\00:23:58.27 and his fellow prisoners fixed their eyes upon the Lord Jesus 00:23:58.30\00:24:03.30 Christ, their hope. And with all the hopelessness and despair of 00:24:03.34\00:24:07.78 this dark place they found hope, true hope, through these murals 00:24:07.81\00:24:13.92 that pointed them to Jesus. As I stand here in the Changi chapel 00:24:13.95\00:24:19.52 gazing at Stanley's hope filled murals it's as if I can hear the 00:24:19.55\00:24:24.26 voices of those prisoners echoing down the years singing 00:24:24.29\00:24:28.80 the old favorite hymn of faith and assurance: 00:24:28.83\00:24:31.77 What about you? Have you lost hope? Where do you find your 00:24:46.45\00:24:51.92 hope in the trials and storms of life?
