Vincent Van Gogh said: 00:02:27.14\00:02:32.11 The Great Southern Ocean is often windy and stormy even 00:02:42.12\00:02:47.26 along this beautiful coastline. This week we drive along the 00:02:47.30\00:02:51.17 Great Ocean Road to explore why more than five million people a 00:02:51.20\00:02:56.67 year visit this part of Victoria Australia and how spending time 00:02:56.71\00:03:02.01 surrounded by the wild wonders of the ocean is good for us all. 00:03:02.04\00:03:08.22 Research is finding that even brief experiences of awe such as 00:03:08.25\00:03:13.32 standing on a beach and looking toward the horizon of the ocean 00:03:13.36\00:03:16.83 can lead us to be more attuned to the common humanity we share 00:03:16.86\00:03:21.86 with one another. This morning I've climbed down the 86 gypsum 00:03:21.90\00:03:27.30 steps to the beach here at the foot of the 12 Apostles. We had 00:03:27.34\00:03:32.01 to time our visit here to low tide as the sea is dangerous and 00:03:32.04\00:03:36.38 at high tide waves smash against those cliffs that are 70 meters 00:03:36.41\00:03:42.32 high. Today we spend more time working and commuting and less 00:03:42.35\00:03:47.96 time in wild places like the Great Ocean Road. Join me on a 00:03:47.99\00:03:57.17 journey along the Great Ocean Road to learn more about the 00:03:57.20\00:04:00.87 three thousand men who labored with their hands to carve this 00:04:00.90\00:04:04.47 iconic road from the mountains and to understand how the 00:04:04.51\00:04:08.18 enormity of their sacrifice and the greatness of the landscape 00:04:08.21\00:04:12.25 combine to fill the soul with awe and wonder. 00:04:12.28\00:04:16.18 ¤ ¤ 00:04:16.22\00:04:39.27 This is the Great Ocean Road in Victoria, Australia. About five 00:04:39.31\00:04:43.68 million people every year travel along the winding curves of this 00:04:43.71\00:04:48.15 road. One of the world's greatest coastal drives for the 00:04:48.18\00:04:52.22 past 80 years, it has drawn visitors from all over the world 00:04:52.25\00:04:57.56 The Great Ocean Road brings people to the edge of Australia 00:04:57.59\00:05:01.20 where the waves of the mighty Southern Ocean ceaselessly roll 00:05:01.23\00:05:05.30 onto beaches or roar at the base of dramatic cliffs. The Great 00:05:05.33\00:05:12.54 Ocean Road officially begins here at Torquay and spans some 00:05:12.57\00:05:17.28 250 km to just outside Warrnambool. Construction on 00:05:17.31\00:05:22.02 the road was started in 1919 and completed in 1932. Torquay is an 00:05:22.05\00:05:30.89 appropriate gateway to the Great Ocean Road as it has 00:05:30.93\00:05:34.16 always had a close relationship with the ocean and a strong surf 00:05:34.20\00:05:38.50 culture. It's recognized today as the home of Australian 00:05:38.53\00:05:41.80 surfing and where iconic brands such as Ripcurl and Quik Silver 00:05:41.84\00:05:46.88 began. The Australian National Surfing Museum is located here 00:05:46.91\00:05:52.18 and is the world's largest beach culture museum, a fitting 00:05:52.21\00:05:57.85 reminder of the close connection it has with the ocean and the 00:05:57.89\00:06:01.12 road that winds along its rugged shore. The Great Ocean Road is 00:06:01.16\00:06:11.00 a masterpiece of human achievement. It was built 00:06:11.03\00:06:14.17 basically by hand with help from a few explosives to break 00:06:14.20\00:06:18.87 rocks. More than 3000 men worked to build the road using 00:06:18.91\00:06:23.35 little more than a pick and shovel. 00:06:23.38\00:06:25.45 Well, it was built by soldiers from the First World War, tough 00:06:25.48\00:06:29.78 fellows they were. We called them diggers in Australia and 00:06:29.82\00:06:34.32 those men were big fellows mainly that were used of hard 00:06:34.36\00:06:39.33 work and they picked these particular type of people who 00:06:39.36\00:06:43.80 could stand up to the rigors of outdoor life. They loved doing 00:06:43.83\00:06:49.54 it because they weren't inside. Now this is during the 00:06:49.57\00:06:53.21 depression mostly and most people were out of work and they 00:06:53.24\00:06:57.38 were struggling to find work. But when these fellows were 00:06:57.41\00:07:01.18 given the job to work and build the Great Ocean Road they 00:07:01.22\00:07:05.49 thought it was Christmas. They were getting a good income, 00:07:05.52\00:07:08.32 married men a lot of them, so they could support their 00:07:08.36\00:07:11.99 families. There was diggers that fought in World War I and were 00:07:12.03\00:07:17.87 used to tough conditions and they had a great camaraderie. 00:07:17.90\00:07:23.20 Now as you can imagine in the war they all stuck together in 00:07:23.24\00:07:28.81 thick and thin and when they were discharged they were on 00:07:28.84\00:07:33.15 their own and they had to make up their own mates and this was 00:07:33.18\00:07:37.39 very difficult for them to change into civilian life. But 00:07:37.42\00:07:43.73 when they worked on the Great Ocean Road with all their 00:07:43.76\00:07:46.96 cobbers they had that same camaraderie that they had during 00:07:47.00\00:07:51.17 the war. 00:07:51.20\00:07:52.53 This sculpture, named The Diggers, shows one of the 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.64 workers handing the other a drink. It reflects the great 00:07:55.67\00:07:59.24 Australian mateship that was not only a part of the building of 00:07:59.27\00:08:02.51 the building of the road, but was so often on display in the 00:08:02.54\00:08:06.15 First World War. The sculpture is set on a plinth of rock 00:08:06.18\00:08:10.15 especially brought here from Port Fairy. The Diggers 00:08:10.19\00:08:13.36 overlooks the Southern Ocean and the Great Ocean Road. 00:08:13.39\00:08:17.33 Now the difficulty they had when they were building the road was 00:08:17.36\00:08:21.63 the rock. Now they had to drill holes in the rock for a start. 00:08:21.66\00:08:27.00 They just drilled it with a chisel and a hammer and blew the 00:08:27.04\00:08:32.01 big stands down over the side of the cliff to the sea. When 00:08:32.04\00:08:36.54 they did this they made all the side of the coast bare because 00:08:36.58\00:08:41.02 they'd pushed the grass, the scrubs and everything off 00:08:41.05\00:08:43.35 and all the rubble went down to the beach. It was pretty hairy. 00:08:43.39\00:08:46.92 Nothing to stop your view between the road and the beach. 00:08:46.96\00:08:49.62 Now these fellows 00:08:51.46\00:08:52.79 who were blasting really upset their mates because a lot 00:08:52.83\00:08:56.77 of them were shell shocked and they'd just come out of the 00:08:56.80\00:08:59.23 trenches and when the blasting went off around the road it 00:08:59.27\00:09:04.64 really upset them. The challenges they had when 00:09:04.67\00:09:07.41 they were making the road was mainly the terrain they had to 00:09:07.44\00:09:11.41 work in. Because it was right along the cliff face of the 00:09:11.45\00:09:15.18 mountains that went right down to the sea and they had to tie 00:09:15.22\00:09:19.42 themself to trees and lower themself down on the rocks, dig 00:09:19.45\00:09:23.53 a hole to stand upright and the digger that was beside him did 00:09:23.56\00:09:29.30 the same and then they dug a track between the two and that's 00:09:29.33\00:09:32.07 how it all started. When they got around to the road a bit 00:09:32.10\00:09:36.27 there's a couple of old farmers and they said to the farmers 00:09:36.30\00:09:39.47 would you like to contribute just a few bob to build the 00:09:39.51\00:09:44.68 road and they said look we haven't got two bobs but we'll 00:09:44.71\00:09:48.95 work on the road for a mile in this area for nothing. 00:09:48.98\00:09:52.15 And that's what they did, these farmers. That was the type of 00:09:52.19\00:09:56.26 patriotism they had building the Great Ocean Road. All the little 00:09:56.29\00:10:01.63 towns and villages along the Great Ocean Road ran dancers and 00:10:01.66\00:10:06.23 different things to make money to pay the diggers because they 00:10:06.27\00:10:09.27 knew it was to their advantage that they could have a beautiful 00:10:09.30\00:10:13.78 road, this Great Ocean Road, that would give them free access 00:10:13.81\00:10:17.81 to their village. Now this Great Ocean Road is not only a 00:10:17.85\00:10:23.72 memorial to those who dug it but it was a memorial to the fallen 00:10:23.75\00:10:27.29 in the First World War. 00:10:27.32\00:10:30.83 The Great Ocean Road has been called Australia's largest war 00:10:30.86\00:10:34.50 memorial. Many visitors to the Great Ocean Road don't know the 00:10:34.53\00:10:39.27 history of how it was constructed and why the 00:10:39.30\00:10:42.44 construction of this road is so special. 00:10:42.47\00:10:47.08 They built the Great Ocean Road because it was to open up all 00:10:47.11\00:10:50.31 the little settlements around the Otway coast. Prior to the 00:10:50.35\00:10:54.75 Great Ocean Road being built they were all landlocked 00:10:54.78\00:10:58.45 depending on the weather. Once the Great Ocean Road was built 00:10:58.49\00:11:03.43 it gave them access right through to wherever they wanted 00:11:03.46\00:11:06.46 to go. The Great Ocean Road was built in 1919 started. It was a 00:11:06.49\00:11:12.73 concept of the Minister of the Lands and the Minister for 00:11:12.77\00:11:17.14 Repatriation to give the returning diggers a job. 00:11:17.17\00:11:21.48 Three thousand men worked on the road, mostly returned diggers. 00:11:21.51\00:11:24.45 They had foremen who kept them on the job. They lived very, 00:11:24.48\00:11:29.58 well. They were paid ten and six a day where they come out of 00:11:35.32\00:11:39.63 the trenches at five bob a day and they were really well off. 00:11:39.66\00:11:45.17 It took about 12 years for all through, 12 or 13 years, to 00:11:45.20\00:11:52.47 complete the road right through from Torquay right through to 00:11:52.51\00:11:58.01 Allansford which was near Warrnambool. Now a lot of the 00:11:58.05\00:12:02.38 road was in pure rock and that's where the tough bit came. One 00:12:02.42\00:12:08.69 particular place is called Mount Defiance and that really defied 00:12:08.72\00:12:12.59 them because it was pure rock. The rest of the road a lot of it 00:12:12.63\00:12:16.33 was aggregate which was pick and shovel work and that's all 00:12:16.36\00:12:20.84 they had basically was pick and shovel and horses and scoops 00:12:20.87\00:12:25.31 and wheelbarrows and they had to do it all by muscle. Well I was 00:12:25.34\00:12:33.35 born here in 1922, lived here all my life, except I was in the 00:12:33.38\00:12:39.95 army for four years, most of it in the Solomon Islands. And it's 00:12:39.99\00:12:45.86 a lovely place here because we got this Great Ocean Road that 00:12:45.89\00:12:49.93 we can move about on. Every bend you come around is a different 00:12:49.96\00:12:54.44 view and you got the rolling surf and the moods of the sea 00:12:54.47\00:12:58.71 changes. So it's an ever changing vista and it's 00:12:58.74\00:13:03.24 beautiful all the way around. 00:13:03.28\00:13:07.38 You think around 80 percent of the world's population is only 00:13:07.42\00:13:11.05 an hour or two from the coast line of an ocean, lake or river. 00:13:11.09\00:13:16.66 There's something about water that draws us and fascinates us. 00:13:16.69\00:13:20.53 Our human bodies are about 70 percent water and they say 00:13:20.56\00:13:25.27 that the water in ourselves is comparable to that found in the 00:13:25.30\00:13:29.17 oceans. The ocean delights, inspires and intimidates us. 00:13:29.20\00:13:34.11 When we 00:13:34.14\00:13:35.78 think of the Great Ocean Road we may think that the word 00:13:35.81\00:13:39.71 great applies to the road construction. While the history 00:13:39.75\00:13:43.79 and meaning of the construction of the road is important, it is 00:13:43.82\00:13:47.26 the ocean that provides the meaning of the word great. 00:13:47.29\00:13:51.49 We're surrounded by water and along with air it's the primary 00:13:51.53\00:13:56.83 ingredient for supporting life. Water covers more than 70 00:13:56.87\00:14:01.94 percent of the earth's surface and 96 percent of all of this 00:14:01.97\00:14:05.57 water on earth is found in the oceans. In fact it's so vast 00:14:05.61\00:14:11.65 we've only explored five percent of our world's oceans. From one 00:14:11.68\00:14:16.45 million kilometers away our planet resembles a small blue 00:14:16.48\00:14:20.69 marble. Author Arthur C. Clarke once commented How inappropriate 00:14:20.72\00:14:27.06 to call this planet earth when it's quite clearly ocean. 00:14:27.10\00:14:32.43 Surfers are a constant presence along the Great Ocean Road with 00:14:32.47\00:14:42.51 world champion surfing events held at Bells Beach every Easter 00:14:42.54\00:14:46.65 Since the 1960s surfers have flocked to Bells Beach. In 1973, 00:14:46.68\00:14:54.06 the Easter event became Australia's first pro surfing 00:14:54.09\00:14:58.73 contest. Surfers have an intimate connection with the 00:14:58.76\00:15:03.00 ocean and many surfers have tried to articulate the feeling 00:15:03.03\00:15:06.67 of riding the power of the sea. Pioneer of big wave surfing 00:15:06.70\00:15:13.41 Buzzy Trent said one of the most famous lines in surfing surfers. 00:15:13.44\00:15:16.78 An element of greatness is power and along the Great Ocean Road 00:15:24.12\00:15:29.06 the ocean and bush that are so beautiful also have the power to 00:15:29.09\00:15:35.50 make us afraid. The dramatic seascapes and spectacular 00:15:35.53\00:15:45.24 scenery hide a dark secret because not only is this stretch 00:15:45.27\00:15:49.78 of coastline among the most beautiful in the world, it is 00:15:49.81\00:15:53.35 also by far the most rugged, hostile and treacherous 00:15:53.38\00:15:58.05 coastline in the world. Cape Otway light station is the 00:15:58.09\00:16:05.26 oldest lighthouse on the Australian mainland. It has 00:16:05.29\00:16:09.86 operated continuously since 1848. Before Bass Strait was 00:16:09.90\00:16:14.40 discovered by Matthew Flinders around 1799 ships had to sail 00:16:14.44\00:16:19.31 around Tasmania taking an extra week to 10 days. But sailing the 00:16:19.34\00:16:24.81 waters between King and Flinders Islands and the mainland is 00:16:24.85\00:16:29.88 still treacherous. During the early years of European 00:16:29.92\00:16:37.13 settlement over 500 sailing ships were wrecked along this 00:16:37.16\00:16:42.03 coast. In fact, over 80 ships were lost between Cape Otway 00:16:42.06\00:16:47.24 and Port Fairy alone. So this section of the coast can well be 00:16:47.27\00:16:53.81 called the Shipwreck Coast. Virtually all of these 00:16:53.84\00:16:58.65 shipwrecks occurred in a period of about 30 years between 00:16:58.68\00:17:04.09 the mid 1800s and the early 1900s. Most of these ships sank 00:17:04.12\00:17:09.16 at night or in a howling storm. In the Bass Strait the mighty 00:17:09.19\00:17:16.10 Southern Ocean is forced through a passage merely 90 km wide and 00:17:16.13\00:17:21.60 onto the continental shelf where the sea bottom becomes 00:17:21.64\00:17:25.57 relatively shallow. In these parts the wind blows and swells 00:17:25.61\00:17:31.68 of 10 to 20 meters aren't rare. The 86 gypsum steps lead to the 00:17:31.71\00:17:41.62 beach here at the foot of the 12 Apostles. The cliffs tower 70 00:17:41.66\00:17:46.90 meters above me and I can see large rocks at the base of the 00:17:46.93\00:17:51.47 cliffs that have fallen before. The view of the sea here fills 00:17:51.50\00:17:56.17 the horizon. The waves don't whisper here but roar onto the 00:17:56.20\00:18:01.31 sand. It's a wild place. It's a beautiful place and I'm a little 00:18:01.34\00:18:06.55 bit frightened at how small I feel. All this great power and 00:18:06.58\00:18:11.85 beauty fills me with an important emotion, Awe. 00:18:11.89\00:18:16.29 Recent research tells me that feeling awe like this is good 00:18:16.32\00:18:23.37 for me. In the upper reaches of pleasure and on the boundary of 00:18:23.40\00:18:27.34 fear is an important emotion, Awe. Awe is an overwhelming 00:18:27.37\00:18:33.38 feeling of reverence, admiration or fear produced by something 00:18:33.41\00:18:40.35 grand, sublime or extremely powerful. Recent research has 00:18:40.38\00:18:45.89 shown that when we feel awe we are more likely to feel a 00:18:45.92\00:18:49.42 greater connection with others, to feel part of something than 00:18:49.46\00:18:53.90 ourselves. Researchers have demonstrated that even watching 00:18:53.93\00:18:59.23 a five minute clip of vast natural beauty like the Great 00:18:59.27\00:19:03.41 Ocean Road helped people feel awe and changed their behavior. 00:19:03.44\00:19:10.21 It's not clear why this area is called the 12 apostles. 00:19:10.25\00:19:13.88 There's never been 12 rock pillars and constant pounding by 00:19:13.92\00:19:17.62 the Great Southern Ocean means that some of the current pillars 00:19:17.65\00:19:21.22 are very fragile. Perhaps the name was used by the locals 00:19:21.26\00:19:27.03 because awe is central to the experience of religion and when 00:19:27.06\00:19:31.33 this view took their breath away they could only liken it to a 00:19:31.37\00:19:36.81 spiritual experience. Research shows that those who experienced 00:19:36.84\00:19:43.08 awe in their tests were less likely to cheat or take money 00:19:43.11\00:19:46.41 that wasn't theirs. And apparently it doesn't take much 00:19:46.45\00:19:49.92 even just 60 seconds of looking at an amazing view such as this 00:19:49.95\00:19:55.72 is enough for us to experience awe. My entire journey along the 00:19:55.76\00:20:01.73 Great Ocean Road has filled me with awe from remembering the 00:20:01.76\00:20:07.57 great sacrifice of the 3000 returned World War I soldiers 00:20:07.60\00:20:12.74 who built this road in memory of their fallen mates to 00:20:12.77\00:20:16.48 remembering the great sacrifice of the fire fighters who saved 00:20:16.51\00:20:21.48 families in the Christmas day bush fires. And now I stand here 00:20:21.52\00:20:26.55 with other visitors, one of the millions of people who visit the 00:20:26.59\00:20:31.86 Great Ocean Road to soak in the awesome wonder and my soul is 00:20:31.89\00:20:39.03 singing: 00:20:39.07\00:20:41.47 ¤ ¤ 00:20:41.50\00:21:39.43 Yes, we've just completed one of the world's great coastal drives 00:21:39.46\00:21:44.17 It's the journey of a lifetime. A journey through some of the 00:21:44.20\00:21:47.07 most exciting, enchanting and exquisitely different landscapes 00:21:47.10\00:21:52.51 in Australia. But as well as being an iconic tourist 00:21:52.54\00:21:57.11 destination, the Great Ocean Road plays a deeper more 00:21:57.15\00:22:00.72 spiritual role. It's a reminder that we're all on a journey, the 00:22:00.75\00:22:04.85 greatest journey, the journey of life. And there's a spiritual 00:22:04.89\00:22:09.62 aspect to this journey. One of the most helpful ways of 00:22:09.66\00:22:15.30 thinking about the Christian life is to see it as a journey. 00:22:15.33\00:22:17.67 This is a theme that runs through the Bible. The Bible 00:22:17.70\00:22:22.54 tells of the 40-year journey of the people of Israel from Egypt 00:22:22.57\00:22:27.78 to the promised land. It tells of Abraham setting out in faith 00:22:27.81\00:22:32.08 to leave the land of his ancestors and journey to a place 00:22:32.11\00:22:38.39 chosen by God. He didn't know where he was going but he did 00:22:38.42\00:22:41.49 know who he would be traveling with and that was enough for 00:22:41.52\00:22:46.66 him. One of the earliest terms used to refer to Christians was 00:22:46.70\00:22:51.93 those who belong to the Way. They were seen as traveling on 00:22:51.97\00:22:57.17 their way to the eternal city. Thinking of the Christian life 00:22:57.21\00:23:00.64 as a journey through the world offers a helpful and vivid way 00:23:00.68\00:23:05.81 to visualizing the life of faith It reminds us that we are going 00:23:05.85\00:23:12.32 somewhere. Not just anywhere. We're on our way to our eternal 00:23:12.35\00:23:16.86 home. It encourages us to think ahead and look forward with 00:23:16.89\00:23:22.80 anticipation to the joy of arrival. One day we shall 00:23:22.83\00:23:28.54 finally see our Lord face to face. If you would like to start 00:23:28.57\00:23:34.21 that journey why not make that decision right now as we pray. 00:23:34.24\00:23:40.78 Dear Heavenly Father, today we have made a journey along one 00:23:40.82\00:23:45.82 of the great coastal roads. The natural beauty, the costal 00:23:45.85\00:23:51.06 scenery, the history and heritage have filled us with 00:23:51.09\00:23:54.20 awe and wonder. We've also been reminded of our journey through 00:23:54.23\00:24:00.57 life and our spiritual pilgrimage. Please give us 00:24:00.60\00:24:04.57 courage and assurance as we journey towards our eternal home 00:24:04.61\00:24:09.04 and grant us the privilege of seeing you face to face. We ask 00:24:09.08\00:24:14.28 this in Jesus' name, Amen. 00:24:14.32\00:24:19.72 ¤ How Great Thou Art ¤ 00:24:19.75\00:25:16.68 Our journey along the Great Ocean Road fills us with awe and 00:25:16.71\00:25:22.18 wonder but it also plays a deeper more spiritual role. 00:25:22.22\00:25:25.89 It reminds us that we are all on a journey, the greatest journey, 00:25:25.92\00:25:30.39 the journey of life. And there's a spiritual aspect to this 00:25:30.43\00:25:34.60 journey. One of the most helpful ways of thinking about the 00:25:34.63\00:25:38.93 Christian life is to see it as a journey. This is a theme that 00:25:38.97\00:25:45.24 runs through the Bible.
