¤ ¤ 00:00:01.96\00:00:07.44 This is quite a growing prosperous city in America's 00:00:07.47\00:00:11.11 state of Texas. San Antonio is drawing in a lot of residents 00:00:11.14\00:00:16.54 and a lot of tourists too. Mainly because of one 00:00:16.58\00:00:22.15 fascinating story. It's this place, The Alamo, which 200 00:00:22.18\00:00:30.33 Texans were defending heroically and where they all were killed 00:00:30.36\00:00:34.96 by General Santa Anna's huge Mexican army. And yet that 00:00:35.00\00:00:39.13 disaster, the battle of the Alamo inspired people to 00:00:39.17\00:00:43.17 liberate this state to create the Republic of Texas and lay 00:00:43.20\00:00:47.84 the foundations of modern America. It became quite a 00:00:47.88\00:00:51.91 legend and today we're going to get to know the most fascinating 00:00:51.95\00:00:56.35 character at that event, the legendary hero, Davy Crockett. 00:00:56.38\00:01:00.56 His story will inspire you to take on any challenges and give 00:01:00.59\00:01:06.26 you a glimpse of something even greater that could change your 00:01:06.29\00:01:10.00 life forever. 00:01:10.03\00:01:11.37 ¤ ¤ 00:01:11.40\00:01:38.33 This is where a legend was born. At this home site beside the 00:01:38.36\00:01:42.73 Nolichucky River near Limestone, Tennessee David, better known as 00:01:42.76\00:01:47.37 Davy Crockett, was born on the 17th of August 1786. Davy was 00:01:47.40\00:01:54.28 fifth of nine children born to John and Rebecca Crockett. 00:01:54.31\00:01:58.85 Davy's father, John Wesley Crockett was a veteran of the 00:01:58.88\00:02:03.02 American Revolution and fought at the battle of King's Mountain 00:02:03.05\00:02:06.96 Life in the wilderness was difficult. These early years were filled with adventure, travel 00:02:25.04\00:02:30.08 and hardship. Davy grew up in the hills and river valleys of 00:02:30.11\00:02:37.29 eastern Tennessee. His father taught him how to fire a rifle 00:02:37.32\00:02:40.82 and he became a crack shot. As a youngster he eagerly 00:02:40.86\00:02:45.36 accompanied his older brothers on hunting trips and mastered 00:02:45.39\00:02:49.20 the skills necessary for life on the American frontier. There was 00:02:49.23\00:02:56.57 no schooling in those early years but Davy had already 00:02:56.60\00:02:59.91 gained a reputation for story telling and marksmanship at a 00:02:59.94\00:03:04.38 young age. 00:03:04.41\00:03:05.75 ¤ Banjo Music ¤ And this is it, the first rifle 00:03:05.78\00:03:11.35 Davy owned and the very one he used to develop his marksmanship 00:03:11.39\00:03:14.86 hunting skills. He affectionately called 00:03:14.89\00:03:17.83 it Betsy. It's part of the collection at the East Tennessee 00:03:17.86\00:03:21.80 Historical Society in Knoxville. In 1796 the Crockett's built a 00:03:21.83\00:03:29.10 log tavern on the stage route between Knoxville, Tennessee and 00:03:29.14\00:03:32.64 Abingdon, Virginia. They provided food and lodging for 00:03:32.67\00:03:36.11 the wagon trains, drovers and teamsters that passed this way. 00:03:36.14\00:03:40.75 This reconstruction now stands on the original site. The 00:03:40.78\00:03:45.85 original tavern survived through until the Civil War when it was 00:03:45.89\00:03:50.06 used as a hospital and then as a hospice for victims of small 00:03:50.09\00:03:53.73 pox. The Crockett family battled to make a living here and Davy 00:03:53.76\00:03:59.37 spent his boyhood years doing household chores, assisting in 00:03:59.40\00:04:03.20 the family business and exploring the woods around the 00:04:03.24\00:04:06.41 area. At the tavern young Davy would have heard many tales told 00:04:06.44\00:04:11.51 by travelers which sparked his own desire to explore America. 00:04:11.55\00:04:16.25 It was here that Davy's father enrolled him in the local school 00:04:16.28\00:04:20.62 Well Davy's schooling lasted just four days. He got into a 00:04:20.66\00:04:27.00 fight with the school bully and gave him a real good beating. 00:04:27.03\00:04:31.53 He was afraid the teacher would punish him and so decided to 00:04:31.57\00:04:35.14 stay away from school. He would head off to school each morning 00:04:35.17\00:04:39.24 with his brothers but before getting to the school house he 00:04:39.27\00:04:43.21 meandered off into the woods to occupy himself until the school 00:04:43.24\00:04:47.42 day was over. Eventually the school master wrote a note to 00:04:47.45\00:04:52.19 his father inquiring why young David wasn't at school. 00:04:52.22\00:04:56.09 Mr. Crockett was extremely angry that his son wasn't attending 00:04:56.12\00:05:01.96 school and that the goods he'd traded to pay for his son's 00:05:02.00\00:05:05.53 education were going to waste. There was a heated argument and 00:05:05.57\00:05:10.21 the threat of heavy-handed punishment. It was all too much 00:05:11.21\00:05:14.64 for Davy and he ended up running away from home. It would be 00:05:14.68\00:05:18.91 years before he returned home again. Davy was on his own at 00:05:18.95\00:05:24.92 just 13 years of age. He was willing to try his hand at 00:05:24.95\00:05:28.96 anything to survive. He spent the next three years wandering 00:05:28.99\00:05:32.93 from town to town doing odd jobs He was plow boy on a farm, a 00:05:32.96\00:05:38.67 cleanup boy at a mill and he helped drove a herd of cattle 00:05:38.70\00:05:42.14 and team of horses to Virginia, a distance of about 600 km. 00:05:42.17\00:05:48.14 Around the time of his 16th birthday Davy returned home 00:05:48.18\00:05:52.61 unannounced and his family hardly recognized him at first. 00:05:52.65\00:05:56.75 The Crockett family was thankful to have Davy back. His father 00:05:56.79\00:06:01.09 owed money to a local farmer so Davy offered to work off the 00:06:01.12\00:06:06.13 debt. He also caught up on a little more schooling and 00:06:06.16\00:06:09.50 divided his time between school and work. He learned the basics, 00:06:09.53\00:06:13.80 to read, to write and to add and subtract. Davy fell in love with 00:06:13.84\00:06:20.44 Polly Finley and they were married on August the 16th 1806, 00:06:20.48\00:06:26.55 the day before his 20th birthday They lived for the next few 00:06:26.58\00:06:30.49 years in a small cabin near Crockett's parents. Davy and 00:06:30.52\00:06:34.79 Polly had two sons and a daughter. Davy was a skilled 00:06:34.82\00:06:38.86 hunter and trapper and was able to provide food and clothing for 00:06:38.89\00:06:42.93 his family. He traveled around the Mississippi Valley region 00:06:42.96\00:06:46.74 as a fur trader where he also became familiar with the local 00:06:46.77\00:06:50.77 native Indians and their customs In 1813 Davy became a U.S. Army 00:06:50.81\00:06:58.81 scout. Creek Indian warriors had massacred about 500 men, women 00:06:58.85\00:07:04.85 and children at Fort Mims in retaliation for white troops 00:07:04.89\00:07:08.72 attacking and killing a party of Indians while they were having a 00:07:08.76\00:07:12.83 midday meal. Like most of his friends and neighbors, Davy 00:07:12.86\00:07:17.70 Crockett set out to avenge the massacre. They attacked the 00:07:17.73\00:07:22.20 Indian town of Tallushatchee and massacred 200 men, women and 00:07:22.24\00:07:27.74 children. Davy rose to the rank of Colonel in the Indian wars 00:07:27.78\00:07:32.11 that followed where he spent most of his time working as a 00:07:32.15\00:07:36.58 scout and hunter. There were times when he would somehow 00:07:36.62\00:07:40.19 provide wild food for his whole regiment. Soon after he returned 00:07:40.22\00:07:46.26 home from the war, his wife Polly died from malaria after 00:07:46.29\00:07:51.07 giving birth to their daughter. In 1815 Davy married a widow 00:07:51.10\00:07:57.71 named Elizabeth who had enough of an inheritance of property 00:07:57.74\00:08:03.01 and cash to make Davy a wealthy man. Davy and Elizabeth had 00:08:03.04\00:08:07.78 three children of their own. The Crockett family moved to west 00:08:07.82\00:08:13.86 Tennessee in 1817 and settled in Lawrence County near the town 00:08:13.89\00:08:20.40 of Lawrenceburg. Here Davy enjoyed success in business and 00:08:20.43\00:08:26.17 politics. Along with the Crockett farm, Davy operated a 00:08:26.20\00:08:30.94 gristmill, a distillery, owned an iron ore mine and a gun 00:08:30.97\00:08:36.54 powder factory. The Crockett's businesses were located here 00:08:36.58\00:08:40.42 along the banks of Schole Creek near the beautiful Crockett 00:08:40.45\00:08:44.42 falls later named in honor of Davy Crockett. In addition to 00:08:44.45\00:08:49.46 being a family man and running these businesses, Davy was also 00:08:49.49\00:08:54.13 a justice of the peace as well as being active in politics and 00:08:54.16\00:08:59.47 military affairs. The up and coming politician set up an 00:08:59.50\00:09:02.90 office like this and became the town commissioner of 00:09:02.94\00:09:07.54 Lawrenceburg in 1818 and was elected colonel of the 57th 00:09:07.58\00:09:12.35 Militia Regiment in the county that same year. From here he 00:09:12.38\00:09:17.59 successfully ran for a seat in the Tennessee Legislature as the 00:09:17.62\00:09:22.02 representative of Lawrence County. Davy Crockett spent five 00:09:22.06\00:09:27.20 years here, one of the longest blocks of time he spent in any 00:09:27.23\00:09:32.07 one location. And a life-size bronze statue of him in 00:09:32.10\00:09:35.97 Lawrenceburg Town Square pays tribute to the backwoods 00:09:36.00\00:09:39.67 statesman and politician whose many business ventures brought 00:09:39.71\00:09:43.65 him to this community The statue bears Crockett's most famous 00:09:43.68\00:09:48.62 quote, Be sure you are right, then go ahead. Davy took a 00:09:48.65\00:09:55.12 break from politics and business and returned to his 00:09:55.16\00:09:59.13 favorite activity, hunting bears in the woods of Tennessee and 00:09:59.16\00:10:04.00 selling their pelts, meat and oil for a living. He even 00:10:04.03\00:10:07.67 claimed to have bagged 105 bears in a seven month period 00:10:07.70\00:10:12.94 during the winter of 1825-26. His love for hunting dangerous 00:10:12.97\00:10:19.61 animals and the tall stories he told about it later played a 00:10:19.65\00:10:24.09 major part in making him a frontier hero. Davy Crockett was 00:10:24.12\00:10:30.19 still an enormously popular political figure. But now his 00:10:30.23\00:10:34.73 ambitions went beyond the Tennessee State Legislature. 00:10:34.76\00:10:38.63 He set his sights on Washington and in 1827 he ran for U.S. 00:10:38.67\00:10:44.57 Congress and was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives 00:10:44.61\00:10:46.78 for three terms between 1827 and 1835. His quick wit and 00:10:46.81\00:10:54.72 natural leadership abilities allowed him to move from the 00:10:54.75\00:10:58.09 humblest of settings to the halls of Congress. Crockett was 00:10:58.12\00:11:02.82 a colorful character who told far-fetched stories and wore 00:11:02.86\00:11:06.96 leather clothes with a squirrel skin hat. He became an admired 00:11:07.00\00:11:11.03 figure in Washington and was highly esteemed by his fellow 00:11:11.07\00:11:15.20 congressmen. He championed the cause of the poor land settlers 00:11:15.24\00:11:19.87 and fought to protect their rights to the land they had 00:11:19.91\00:11:23.38 worked. Even in Washington, Davy Crockett was larger than life 00:11:23.41\00:11:27.58 and was always where the action was. He was on hand and helped 00:11:27.62\00:11:32.89 foil an assassination attempt on President Andrew Jackson. 00:11:32.92\00:11:36.83 On the 30th of January 1835 the two men were part of a crowd of 00:11:36.86\00:11:42.16 lawmakers leaving the U.S. Capital after a state funeral. 00:11:42.20\00:11:47.07 As President Jackson passed near the east portico a crazed gunman 00:11:47.10\00:11:51.54 named Richard Lawrence emerged from a throng of spectators and 00:11:51.57\00:11:55.94 shot at the President with two pistols both of which 00:11:55.98\00:11:59.75 miraculously misfired. Davy Crockett bravely tackled the 00:11:59.78\00:12:05.25 would be assassin, wrestled him to the ground and disarmed him. 00:12:05.29\00:12:09.79 It was the first time someone had attempted to assassinate an 00:12:09.82\00:12:14.33 American president. But despite saving the president's life 00:12:14.36\00:12:19.67 Crockett had serious disagreements with 00:12:19.70\00:12:21.30 Andrew Jackson particularly over the president's Indian Removal 00:12:21.34\00:12:24.81 Act. Crockett fiercely opposed the president's plan to 00:12:24.84\00:12:31.21 forcibly remove the native American tribes from their 00:12:31.25\00:12:33.92 ancestral lands and relocate them somewhere else. His feud 00:12:33.95\00:12:38.99 with the president would bring about the end of his political 00:12:39.02\00:12:41.69 career. Jackson campaigned against Crockett and stood his 00:12:41.72\00:12:46.39 own candidates against him. In 1835 Crockett narrowly lost his 00:12:46.43\00:12:52.13 seat in Congress. He was bitterly disappointed and 00:12:52.17\00:12:56.40 allegedly told his constituents that they could do what they 00:12:56.44\00:13:00.81 liked but that he was leaving and going to Texas. And go to 00:13:00.84\00:13:06.11 Texas he did. With a few followers in tow he left 00:13:06.15\00:13:11.05 Tennessee and made his way to Texas and arrived here at the 00:13:11.09\00:13:14.26 Alamo on the banks of the San Antonio River on the 8th 00:13:14.29\00:13:16.83 of February 1836. The Alamo was originally a Spanish Catholic 00:13:16.86\00:13:23.73 mission and fortress built in 1718 called Mission San Antonio 00:13:23.77\00:13:29.30 de Valero. The mission was part of Spain's strategy to colonize 00:13:29.34\00:13:35.28 and maintain control over this territory. Spain established 00:13:35.31\00:13:39.91 five missions along the San Antonio River. Mission San 00:13:39.95\00:13:44.85 Antonio de Valero with its stone church, convent and houses 00:13:44.89\00:13:50.06 served as the religious, cultural and commercial center 00:13:50.09\00:13:53.23 for the region. In the early 1800s Spanish troops were 00:13:53.26\00:13:58.60 stationed here. The garrison stood in a grove of cottonwood 00:13:58.63\00:14:02.47 trees and the Spanish soldiers gave it the name El Alamo, the 00:14:02.50\00:14:07.58 Spanish word for cottonwood and to remind them of their home 00:14:07.61\00:14:11.61 town in Mexico. When Davy Crockett arrived here there was 00:14:11.65\00:14:16.62 serious trouble brewing. In the early 1800s a lot of American 00:14:16.65\00:14:21.62 settlers arrived in San Antonio and began to settle in the area. 00:14:21.66\00:14:26.23 Before long there were more Americans than Mexicans living 00:14:26.26\00:14:31.27 in Texas. In 1821 the country of Mexico won its independence from 00:14:31.30\00:14:37.31 Spain and so Texas became part of Mexico. But the Americans 00:14:37.34\00:14:41.94 living here in Texas didn't want to be part of Mexico and so 00:14:41.98\00:14:45.91 decided to break away and become an independent republic. A group 00:14:45.95\00:14:50.75 of rebellious Texans captured the Alamo and prepared to defend 00:14:50.79\00:14:54.69 it. A powerful Mexican general named de Santa Anna took control 00:14:54.72\00:14:59.16 of the government and gathered an army of several thousand to 00:14:59.19\00:15:03.37 march on Texas and take it back including the Alamo. When the 00:15:03.40\00:15:08.10 Texans heard that General Santa Anna was coming there with a 00:15:08.14\00:15:11.27 large army there was a lot of debate on what they should do. 00:15:11.31\00:15:15.44 Should they abandon the Alamo and retreat or stay and fight 00:15:15.48\00:15:20.55 and defend the fort. The head of the Texas army, General Sam 00:15:20.58\00:15:25.55 Houston wanted to retreat and abandon the fort and remove the 00:15:25.59\00:15:29.62 cannons. He said it couldn't be defended. However, James Bowie 00:15:29.66\00:15:32.86 the famous frontiersman and knife fighter, decided he would 00:15:32.89\00:15:38.37 stay, defend the fort and fight for freedom. The rest of the 00:15:38.40\00:15:43.20 soldiers also chose to stay and fight. Davy Crockett decided to 00:15:43.24\00:15:47.48 join them and defend the Alamo. He would fight for freedom. 00:15:47.51\00:15:52.21 Because of his reputation and exploits Crockett's presence was 00:15:52.25\00:15:56.52 a great morale boost to the Texans. Having Davy on their 00:15:56.55\00:16:00.76 side gave them a lot of courage. The Alamo compound was 00:16:00.79\00:16:06.70 surrounded by a wall about four meters high. Inside the fort 00:16:06.73\00:16:11.73 there was a chapel, a barracks for soldiers, a hospital room, a 00:16:11.77\00:16:16.81 large courtyard and a horse corral Cannons were placed along 00:16:16.84\00:16:21.51 the walls and on top of the buildings. Travis, James Bowie 00:16:21.54\00:16:25.78 and their men made preparations to defend the Alamo. General 00:16:25.81\00:16:30.89 Santa Anna and his troops arrived at the Alamo on February 00:16:30.92\00:16:35.16 23, 1836. They laid siege to the fort for 13 days and began to 00:16:35.19\00:16:41.20 bombard the former mission with cannon shot in an effort to 00:16:41.23\00:16:45.23 systematically destroy its protective walls and reduce them 00:16:45.27\00:16:49.97 to rubble. Then in the early morning of March 6, 1836 Santa 00:16:50.01\00:16:56.38 Anna's men launched a major attack. At first the Texans kept 00:16:56.41\00:17:02.72 them out and successfully repulsed two attacks. However 00:17:02.75\00:17:07.09 there were just too many Mexican soldiers. Santa Anna's 00:17:07.12\00:17:11.63 troops regrouped several times. They continued to attack until 00:17:11.66\00:17:16.06 they could climb the walls. The Alamo fighters then moved 00:17:17.07\00:17:21.30 further inside the mission. This allowed the Mexicans to get over 00:17:21.34\00:17:25.51 the wall. Once the Mexicans were inside they battled the Alamo 00:17:25.54\00:17:30.08 fighters hand to hand and from room to room. Some say that when 00:17:30.11\00:17:34.42 the Alamo fighters ran out of bullets Davy Crockett led them 00:17:34.45\00:17:38.22 as they wielded their guns as clubs and continued bravely 00:17:38.25\00:17:42.56 fighting inside the Alamo to the very end. The battle of the 00:17:42.59\00:17:47.96 Alamo lasted only one-and-a- half hours. Every Alamo defender 00:17:48.00\00:17:52.07 was killed. James Bowie who had been ill was killed in his bed 00:17:52.10\00:17:57.21 and Davy Crockett... Well early reports from witnesses had him 00:17:57.24\00:18:01.91 falling in battle while still wielding his rifle surrounded 00:18:01.94\00:18:05.68 by a heap of enemy corpses. Although the Texans lost the 00:18:05.71\00:18:12.79 battle, their bravery, their example inspired and galvanized 00:18:12.82\00:18:17.76 the rest of Texas against Mexico and General Santa Anna and the 00:18:17.79\00:18:22.80 time they held out during the siege, those 13 days, gave 00:18:22.83\00:18:27.64 General Sam Houston enough time to build his army so that a few 00:18:27.67\00:18:32.44 weeks later he led the Texans to victory over Santa Anna's army 00:18:32.47\00:18:36.61 and Texas won its independence becoming a republic and 00:18:36.64\00:18:41.15 eventually part of the United States of America. The story of 00:18:41.18\00:18:46.79 Davy Crockett and the Alamo soon grew into a famous legend. His 00:18:46.82\00:18:51.69 achievements made him famous in his own lifetime, but after his 00:18:51.73\00:18:56.06 death his exploits were often exaggerated to mythical 00:18:56.10\00:18:59.93 proportions. Books, stage plays, poems and songs elevated him 00:18:59.97\00:19:06.94 into the great American super hero. It was said he could wade 00:19:06.98\00:19:12.41 the Mississippi River, leap over the state of Ohio, ride on a 00:19:12.45\00:19:17.09 bolt of lightning killed a bear when he was only three and 00:19:17.12\00:19:20.69 could wrestle wild cats. Of course that was the legend, all 00:19:20.72\00:19:27.70 myth and exaggerated beyond reality. Then came movies and 00:19:27.73\00:19:31.40 television. Hollywood and Disney combined to inflate Davy 00:19:31.43\00:19:35.64 Crockett's legend even further. He was the subject of 17 movies 00:19:35.67\00:19:40.88 and 12 television series over a relatively short period of 00:19:40.91\00:19:46.48 time. There's an interesting scene of the 2004 movie The 00:19:46.51\00:19:50.32 Alamo. Davy Crockett and James Bowie are waiting for the enemy 00:19:50.35\00:19:54.82 to attack knowing they face certain death and Crockett 00:19:54.86\00:19:59.49 confesses, If it was just me, simple old David from Tennessee, 00:19:59.53\00:20:03.26 I might drop over that wall some night and take my chances 00:20:03.30\00:20:08.00 running away, but that Davy Crockett fella, they're all 00:20:08.04\00:20:12.71 watching him. Crockett realizes that he's a living legend to the 00:20:12.74\00:20:16.85 men of the Alamo. Now while he recognizes that deep down he's 00:20:16.88\00:20:21.02 just simple old David, he also knows that the soldiers identify 00:20:21.05\00:20:26.49 him with the man who rides lightning bolts wades rivers 00:20:26.52\00:20:31.39 and leaps mountains. His influence and power comes from 00:20:31.43\00:20:36.43 that association and so he's no longer free to just act any old 00:20:36.46\00:20:40.40 way he wants to because others depend on him to be more. They 00:20:40.44\00:20:45.61 look to him as a source of courage, they depend on him, 00:20:45.64\00:20:49.21 they're watching to see if he's the real deal. When I think 00:20:49.24\00:20:55.55 about the line in that movie, They're all watching, I think 00:20:55.58\00:20:59.65 about its implications for a Christian. Will I be that person 00:20:59.69\00:21:04.69 who thinks only of himself or will I take into consideration 00:21:04.73\00:21:09.36 how my actions affect others? Do we realize that others are 00:21:09.40\00:21:14.57 watching us and that what we choose and how we behave could 00:21:14.60\00:21:19.34 have a profound effect on them. Many historians credit Crockett 00:21:19.37\00:21:23.58 with boosting the morale of the defenders at the Alamo when he 00:21:23.61\00:21:27.62 arrived to support them. His presence and example encouraged 00:21:27.65\00:21:32.72 them to take a stand, to hold out for as long as they did 00:21:32.75\00:21:36.83 giving General Sam Houston the precious time needed to gather 00:21:36.86\00:21:41.20 his army, the army that would eventually defeat Santa Anna and 00:21:41.23\00:21:45.37 propel Texas to freedom and independence. You see as 00:21:45.40\00:21:50.94 Christians we are associated with someone bigger than 00:21:50.97\00:21:54.14 ourselves but he's not a legend. He's God, he's real. Sometimes 00:21:54.18\00:22:00.75 we may be tempted to drop over the wall in order to serve what 00:22:00.78\00:22:05.05 we may think are our own best interests. But we shouldn't do 00:22:05.09\00:22:09.09 it, because those who are identified with Christ never 00:22:09.12\00:22:14.10 know who is watching. We should never betray the kingdom we 00:22:14.13\00:22:18.47 represent with our own selfish actions. Others are looking at 00:22:18.50\00:22:22.77 us to see if Christianity is indeed the real deal and we can 00:22:22.80\00:22:27.98 only give courage and comfort to the extent that we live up to 00:22:28.01\00:22:32.41 the image, the image of Christ. No doubt Paul had this in mind 00:22:32.45\00:22:36.02 when he told Timothy in 1 Timothy chapter 4 and verse 12 00:22:36.05\00:22:40.96 Jesus highlighted this same principle earlier when he spoke 00:22:51.60\00:22:55.40 about his followers being the light of the world. Here's what 00:22:55.44\00:22:59.37 he said in Matthew chapter 5 and verse 16. 00:22:59.41\00:23:02.31 And the apostle John echoed the same principle: 00:23:11.22\00:23:14.32 God asks his followers to live good and upright lives, to stand 00:23:24.57\00:23:30.44 for principle, to do what is right and honorable, to bring 00:23:30.47\00:23:34.21 light, hope, peace, truth and happiness to people around them. 00:23:34.24\00:23:38.51 God wants people to be able to clearly see the difference that 00:23:38.55\00:23:42.85 he can make in a person's life. God wants people to see first 00:23:42.88\00:23:47.92 hand the benefits that his principles bring to a society 00:23:47.96\00:23:51.76 and that's why he asks his followers to do the right thing. 00:23:51.79\00:23:57.73 Davy Crockett gives us just a tiny insight into this. He was 00:23:57.77\00:24:01.87 the provider who gave his life for freedom, but Jesus is the 00:24:01.90\00:24:07.44 great provider and he made the ultimate sacrifice, not just for 00:24:07.48\00:24:12.05 Texas, but for the whole world. He gave himself up on the cross 00:24:12.08\00:24:16.18 in order to offer freedom to every sinful, broken person on 00:24:16.22\00:24:21.86 this planet. On that cross he was laying out forgiveness. He 00:24:21.89\00:24:27.23 was taking on the results of all our sins. He was laying out 00:24:27.26\00:24:30.90 his perfect life. The cross of Christ did indeed result in 00:24:30.93\00:24:36.77 freedom in a great kingdom of independence and that freedom 00:24:36.81\00:24:41.64 can make a big impact right now. It enables broken people to 00:24:41.68\00:24:48.48 heal. It enables wounded people to feel strong and confident. 00:24:48.52\00:24:53.25 You see, Jesus does forgive sins He does wipe out the darkness of 00:24:53.29\00:24:59.36 the past. But he also offers us a new life. After that there's 00:24:59.39\00:25:04.70 something so powerful that comes out of his life given up for 00:25:04.73\00:25:08.34 each of us. We can move way out of whatever darkness, whatever 00:25:08.37\00:25:12.67 problems are putting us down. We can get into Christ's kingdom, 00:25:12.71\00:25:17.48 the kingdom of heaven. That's the independence that Jesus gave 00:25:17.51\00:25:21.65 himself up for. That's the kind of freedom he can bring us. Why 00:25:21.68\00:25:27.52 not reach out and accept that gift of freedom right now as we 00:25:27.56\00:25:31.69 pray. Dear Father, thank you for 00:25:31.73\00:25:36.36 understanding so well about the things that keep us in bondage. 00:25:36.40\00:25:40.44 Thank you for offering us an escape, a way out. We need Jesus 00:25:40.47\00:25:46.11 Christ in our lives. We need his forgiveness and also his 00:25:46.14\00:25:50.15 empowerment. We claim his strength inside our hearts. We 00:25:50.18\00:25:55.12 claim his ability to overcome every one of our obstacles 00:25:55.15\00:25:59.32 in his name, Amen. 00:25:59.35\00:26:04.06 The story of Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier and hero of 00:26:04.09\00:26:10.60 the Alamo, has captured the interest and imagination of 00:26:10.63\00:26:13.70 people all over the world. He was a man who came from humble 00:26:13.74\00:26:17.87 beginnings. He overcame many obstacles and challenges to 00:26:17.91\00:26:22.31 become a legend in his own lifetime.
