Just east of the old city of Jerusalem is the Kidron Valley. 00:00:01.40\00:00:04.83 At the edge of the Kidron 00:00:04.86\00:00:06.23 and progressing up to the Mount of Olives 00:00:06.26\00:00:08.15 lies the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:00:08.18\00:00:10.73 When we think of the word garden, 00:00:10.76\00:00:12.17 we often think of a bunch of flowers 00:00:12.20\00:00:14.10 or a small patch of vegetables. 00:00:14.13\00:00:16.18 But in the Middle East, garden can mean 00:00:16.21\00:00:18.61 grove or vineyard as well. 00:00:18.64\00:00:21.00 Growing in this garden were olive trees. 00:00:21.03\00:00:23.94 Gethsemane means an oil press. 00:00:23.97\00:00:27.14 Right here or within a few hundred yards of this very spot 00:00:27.17\00:00:31.48 Jesus was baptized in the same way 00:00:31.51\00:00:33.62 everyone who follows Him must be baptized. 00:00:33.65\00:00:37.34 Hey, guys, something is wrong with this report. 00:00:40.45\00:00:44.57 Jesus wasn't baptized here that was at the Jordon. 00:00:44.60\00:00:49.46 Did somebody swap my pages? 00:00:49.49\00:00:52.15 You need water for baptism. 00:00:52.18\00:00:55.49 Today's study may not cause any "Thunder in the Holy Land" 00:00:55.52\00:00:59.18 and it certainly won't cause the department of tourism to change 00:00:59.21\00:01:02.60 any of the signs directing us to Gethsemane 00:01:02.63\00:01:05.67 as the baptismal site of Jesus. 00:01:05.70\00:01:08.18 But for all those who have chosen to embrace 00:01:08.21\00:01:10.41 the wonderful love of Jesus, 00:01:10.44\00:01:12.79 I hope it will cause some serious thunder in our hearts 00:01:12.82\00:01:16.38 because Gethsemane is indeed, 00:01:16.41\00:01:18.31 the very site of Jesus' baptism in a cup. 00:01:18.34\00:01:23.12 Our study today begins with a session of worship 00:02:15.47\00:02:18.86 and then a prayer request 00:02:18.89\00:02:20.26 by two of Jesus' disciples and their mother. 00:02:20.29\00:02:24.64 "Then came to him the mother of Zebedee's children 00:02:24.67\00:02:27.26 with her sons, worshipping him, 00:02:27.29\00:02:29.38 and desiring a certain thing of him. 00:02:29.41\00:02:32.12 And he said unto her, What wilt thou? 00:02:32.15\00:02:34.95 She saith unto him, Grant that these my two sons may sit, 00:02:34.98\00:02:38.71 the one on thy right hand, and the other on my left, 00:02:38.74\00:02:41.61 in thy kingdom. 00:02:41.64\00:02:43.33 But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. 00:02:43.36\00:02:47.28 Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, 00:02:47.31\00:02:50.21 and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? 00:02:50.24\00:02:55.00 They say unto him, We are able. 00:02:55.03\00:02:58.31 And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, 00:02:58.34\00:03:02.77 and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 00:03:02.80\00:03:07.10 but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, 00:03:07.13\00:03:11.68 but it shall be given to them 00:03:11.71\00:03:13.08 for whom it is prepared of my Father." 00:03:13.11\00:03:17.03 As we look at the words of Jesus, 00:03:17.06\00:03:18.79 He says twice that there is a baptism I am baptized with. 00:03:18.82\00:03:24.24 The tense of I am is present continuous. 00:03:24.27\00:03:27.81 Jesus is talking about a baptism that is happening now 00:03:27.84\00:03:31.59 in the present and it's on going. 00:03:31.62\00:03:34.25 Now I'm going to ask an obvious question, 00:03:34.28\00:03:36.38 but before I do we need to look at one more verse, Luke 12:50. 00:03:36.41\00:03:41.35 Here Jesus is again talking about His baptism 00:03:41.38\00:03:44.61 and notice the tense in this verse 00:03:44.64\00:03:46.89 is different from the last verse. 00:03:46.92\00:03:49.39 "But I have a baptism to be baptized with, 00:03:49.42\00:03:53.24 and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!" 00:03:53.27\00:03:57.01 To be is future tense. 00:03:57.04\00:03:59.92 So here is the expanded question. 00:03:59.95\00:04:02.37 When was Jesus baptized? 00:04:02.40\00:04:04.65 Was it at his baptism in the Jordan River 00:04:04.68\00:04:06.96 with John the Baptist, past tense? 00:04:06.99\00:04:09.87 Or was it something happening in the here 00:04:09.90\00:04:12.16 and now on a daily basis, 00:04:12.19\00:04:14.50 present continuous tense as Jesus portrayed 00:04:14.53\00:04:17.15 to James and John and their mother? 00:04:17.18\00:04:19.51 Or was it yet to be in the future as Jesus shared 00:04:19.54\00:04:23.67 with His disciples in Luke 12:50. 00:04:23.70\00:04:27.05 The answer to this question will also solve Andrea's quandary. 00:04:27.08\00:04:31.07 Let's join our reporters along the foot of the Mount of Olives 00:04:31.10\00:04:34.84 in the Kidron Valley. 00:04:34.87\00:04:37.33 Jesus clearly talked about a present tense 00:04:37.36\00:04:40.10 and a future tense baptism. 00:04:40.13\00:04:42.57 But rarely understand what He was actually getting at, 00:04:42.60\00:04:44.97 we first need to understand the meaning of the word baptized. 00:04:45.00\00:04:49.10 The word baptized comes from the Greek word baptidzo 00:04:49.13\00:04:52.70 and it means to immerse, or to submerge. 00:04:52.73\00:04:56.51 It's an industrial word used in the textile mills. 00:04:56.54\00:04:59.07 A large vat was put in place for dyeing wool or linen et cetera. 00:04:59.10\00:05:03.64 The material was then baptidzo or fully submerged 00:05:03.67\00:05:08.09 to render it a completely new color. 00:05:08.12\00:05:10.46 And perhaps the clearest example that shows 00:05:10.49\00:05:13.08 the meaning of the word baptidzo is a text 00:05:13.11\00:05:15.84 from the Greek poet and physician 00:05:15.87\00:05:17.40 Nicander who lived around 200 B.C. 00:05:17.43\00:05:20.60 It's a recipe for making of all things, pickles. 00:05:20.63\00:05:24.57 This recipe is helpful to understand baptism 00:05:24.60\00:05:27.37 because it uses the word baptidzo 00:05:27.40\00:05:30.82 and its root word bapto. 00:05:30.85\00:05:32.22 Nicander says that to make a pickle 00:05:32.25\00:05:34.52 the vegetable should first be dipped 00:05:34.55\00:05:36.37 or bapto into boiling water. 00:05:36.40\00:05:39.27 And then baptized or baptidzo in the vinegar solution. 00:05:39.30\00:05:43.63 Now both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables 00:05:43.66\00:05:46.58 in a solution, but the first is temporary. 00:05:46.61\00:05:50.48 The second the act of baptizing the vegetable 00:05:50.51\00:05:53.92 produces a permanent change whether dyeing cloth 00:05:53.95\00:05:57.76 or preserving cucumbers there's a complete change 00:05:57.79\00:06:01.08 transformation when a baptism takes place. 00:06:01.11\00:06:04.74 And so it was with Jesus at His baptism. 00:06:04.77\00:06:07.78 Well, what was baptism as defined by Jesus? 00:06:07.81\00:06:11.45 Jesus interprets the baptism He is talking about in Luke 9:23. 00:06:11.48\00:06:15.63 "And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, 00:06:15.66\00:06:19.05 let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, 00:06:19.08\00:06:24.03 and follow me." 00:06:24.06\00:06:25.80 If there is a single truth that Jesus taught 00:06:25.83\00:06:27.89 that caused folks to reject Him as messiah this is it. 00:06:27.92\00:06:32.55 And death to self would never make Wall Street a profit. 00:06:32.58\00:06:35.77 No, and death to self has never sold well even in church. 00:06:35.80\00:06:41.22 But did others understand this teaching of Jesus? 00:06:41.25\00:06:45.24 Well, Levi, John the Baptist certainly understood. 00:06:45.27\00:06:48.25 In Luke 3:7-8 we read, 00:06:48.28\00:06:50.80 "Then said he to the multitude 00:06:50.83\00:06:52.24 that came forth to be baptized of him... 00:06:52.27\00:06:54.84 Bring forth therefore fruits worthy of repentance." 00:06:54.87\00:06:58.32 For the masses of people that meant don't be selfish. 00:06:58.35\00:07:01.78 If you have excess share it. 00:07:01.81\00:07:03.90 That will cost you time and you will slim down your closet, 00:07:03.93\00:07:06.61 but self does not need as much as it thinks it does. 00:07:06.64\00:07:09.56 For the tax collectors, that meant 00:07:09.59\00:07:11.30 not charging more than they were supposed to. 00:07:11.33\00:07:13.76 Self doesn't need money if it means taking money 00:07:13.79\00:07:15.75 that doesn't belong to you. 00:07:15.78\00:07:17.49 For the soldiers, it meant doing violence to no man. 00:07:17.52\00:07:20.35 Telling the truth and being content with their wages. 00:07:20.38\00:07:23.86 And the Apostle Paul clearly understood what Jesus meant 00:07:23.89\00:07:26.39 when He wrote to the folks in Corinth. 00:07:26.42\00:07:28.36 Telling them that he was, 00:07:28.39\00:07:30.12 "Always bearing about in the body 00:07:30.15\00:07:32.22 the dying of the Lord Jesus, 00:07:32.25\00:07:34.10 that the life also of Jesus 00:07:34.13\00:07:35.58 might be made manifest in our body. 00:07:35.61\00:07:37.92 For we which live are always delivered unto death 00:07:37.95\00:07:40.78 for Jesus' sake, that the life also of Jesus 00:07:40.81\00:07:44.17 might be made manifest in our mortal flesh." 00:07:44.20\00:07:47.34 What constant dying was Paul talking about? 00:07:47.37\00:07:49.96 The same dying Jesus talked about in Luke 9:23. 00:07:49.99\00:07:53.70 "Death to self and living for God." 00:07:53.73\00:07:56.56 Paul made it clear how often death to self must take place. 00:07:56.59\00:08:00.44 "I die daily. Be not deceived, 00:08:00.47\00:08:03.61 evil communications corrupt good manners." 00:08:03.64\00:08:06.50 Evil communication is not just using a curse word. 00:08:06.53\00:08:09.42 We're gonna engage in evil communication 00:08:09.45\00:08:11.15 just by saying something like I got to do what's right for me. 00:08:11.18\00:08:14.46 But Jesus our example died to self 00:08:14.49\00:08:16.53 and did what His father wanted Him to do. 00:08:16.56\00:08:18.89 He did what was right for us. 00:08:18.92\00:08:20.87 That you got to look out for number one mentality 00:08:20.90\00:08:23.16 is another evil communication that Jesus rejected. 00:08:23.19\00:08:26.55 This rejection of self, this embrace of love 00:08:26.58\00:08:29.57 which is the principle of giving what is needed most 00:08:29.60\00:08:32.49 is the cup that Jesus was talking about in Matthew 20 00:08:32.52\00:08:35.58 and it's the same baptism that Jesus was committed to. 00:08:35.61\00:08:38.64 To willingly lose one's life that is to choose death to self, 00:08:38.67\00:08:42.85 to choose Christ's will in place of your own doesn't seem normal, 00:08:42.88\00:08:47.19 but it's the only way to save your life in the end. 00:08:47.22\00:08:50.59 And this was not just a teaching of Jesus 00:08:50.62\00:08:53.49 it was the life He lived. 00:08:53.52\00:08:55.61 Okay, I think I see where this is going. 00:08:55.64\00:08:58.69 Jesus was a real person, a real human being. 00:08:58.72\00:09:03.36 He was fully man. 00:09:03.39\00:09:05.40 He had thoughts, feelings, and preferences. 00:09:05.43\00:09:08.89 He walked in our skin and thus knows our pain, 00:09:08.92\00:09:12.29 our suffering, sadness and heartache. 00:09:12.32\00:09:15.68 Through the gift of prophecy and through Revelation 00:09:15.71\00:09:18.01 Jesus knew that the Father sent Him here 00:09:18.04\00:09:20.39 to die on behalf of sinful and ungrateful man. 00:09:20.42\00:09:24.55 He knew in advance that He was going to be betrayed 00:09:24.58\00:09:27.34 by one of His own disciples. 00:09:27.37\00:09:29.65 He already knew that the rest of His disciples 00:09:29.68\00:09:31.99 would abandon Him at His arrest. 00:09:32.02\00:09:34.25 And He knew Peter would swear with an oath 00:09:34.28\00:09:37.13 that he didn't even know Him. 00:09:37.16\00:09:39.78 All of this foreknowledge brought to the heart of Jesus 00:09:39.81\00:09:42.73 great emotional pain and distress. 00:09:42.76\00:09:45.61 And as He went into the Garden of Gethsemane 00:09:45.64\00:09:48.48 He told His disciples, 00:09:48.51\00:09:50.33 "My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death, 00:09:50.36\00:09:55.44 tarry ye hear, and watch with me." 00:09:55.47\00:09:58.54 This sorrow was even unto death. 00:09:58.57\00:10:02.02 To give you a true picture of where He was emotionally, 00:10:02.05\00:10:05.71 look at Luke 22:44, 00:10:05.74\00:10:08.54 "And being in an agony He prayed more earnestly 00:10:08.57\00:10:12.66 and His sweat was as it were great drops of blood 00:10:12.69\00:10:16.65 falling down to the ground." 00:10:16.68\00:10:19.27 He wasn't just emotionally troubled, he was in agony. 00:10:19.30\00:10:25.03 Come. 00:10:25.06\00:10:26.43 Meet a man who knows your pain, heartache, 00:10:26.46\00:10:29.03 suffering, sorrows and burdens. 00:10:29.06\00:10:32.06 No matter what you've experienced by way of loss, 00:10:32.09\00:10:35.29 pain, tragedy or grief. 00:10:35.32\00:10:37.79 He has tasted it too with one important difference. 00:10:37.82\00:10:42.23 It wasn't just inflicted upon Him. 00:10:42.26\00:10:44.98 He chose to come to live for us, to die for us, by dying to self. 00:10:45.01\00:10:51.65 He chose to give up His desires, 00:10:51.68\00:10:54.40 His wishes if His Father so directed. 00:10:54.43\00:10:57.77 He didn't say I got to look out for number one or I have to do 00:10:57.80\00:11:01.50 what's right for me or I don't feel like doing that. 00:11:01.53\00:11:05.75 You see, He knows 00:11:05.78\00:11:07.58 that the only way out of this snakepit of sin called earth 00:11:07.61\00:11:11.65 is through complete and total death to self. 00:11:11.68\00:11:16.89 The symbol of baptism 00:11:16.92\00:11:18.29 is going down under the water and coming back up. 00:11:18.32\00:11:22.12 But what true baptism is, is dying to self 00:11:22.15\00:11:25.72 and letting Christ live in you and through you. 00:11:25.75\00:11:29.45 If you want to follow Jesus in that experience, 00:11:29.48\00:11:32.23 there is a prayer you must often pray. 00:11:32.26\00:11:35.16 It's the same prayer Jesus prayed 00:11:35.19\00:11:37.06 at His baptism in the garden. 00:11:37.09\00:11:39.65 You can read it in Mark 14:36. 00:11:39.68\00:11:42.83 "And He said, Abba, Father, 00:11:42.86\00:11:45.24 all things are possible unto thee, 00:11:45.27\00:11:48.46 take away this cup from me, nevertheless not what I will, 00:11:48.49\00:11:54.09 but what thou wilt." 00:11:54.12\00:11:56.29 Not what I want, but what you want, Father. 00:11:56.32\00:12:02.12 This prayer is so important 00:12:02.15\00:12:04.80 and we can see the importance of that prayer 00:12:04.83\00:12:07.93 for other people, for evil people. 00:12:07.96\00:12:12.64 But that prayer was important for Jesus too. 00:12:12.67\00:12:16.32 Jesus could have been selfish, bitter or angry. 00:12:16.35\00:12:20.22 After all, He was misunderstood and mistreated. 00:12:20.25\00:12:24.44 He was accused of being a bastard. 00:12:24.47\00:12:27.33 He was marked, flogged and finally crucified. 00:12:27.36\00:12:31.86 With all this mistreatment you can be sure 00:12:31.89\00:12:34.41 Satan was there suggesting all kinds of thoughts. 00:12:34.44\00:12:38.06 If Jesus had ever allowed those suggestions 00:12:38.09\00:12:40.43 to motivate His thoughts or feelings, 00:12:40.46\00:12:43.56 I can assure you the outcome of His life 00:12:43.59\00:12:45.99 would have been very, very different. 00:12:46.02\00:12:49.59 It is apparent that throughout His life He was always seeking 00:12:49.62\00:12:53.14 God's will, God's heart, God's thoughts to be His own. 00:12:53.17\00:12:58.06 One clear proof of that is the night on the lake. 00:12:58.09\00:13:02.56 Jesus was exhausted from a long day of selfless ministry. 00:13:02.59\00:13:06.33 So He directed His disciples to send the multitude away 00:13:06.36\00:13:09.89 and then take Him by boat to the other side of the lake. 00:13:09.92\00:13:13.75 A terrible storm came up and put their lives in jeopardy, 00:13:13.78\00:13:18.33 but Jesus slept through it. 00:13:18.36\00:13:20.69 Exhaustion will do that. 00:13:20.72\00:13:23.39 Imagine being awakened by 12 frightened, 00:13:23.42\00:13:26.96 no panic men screaming. 00:13:26.99\00:13:30.15 Don't you care that we are perishing? 00:13:30.18\00:13:33.92 Now being awakened in that manner 00:13:33.95\00:13:35.70 from such a sound sleep 00:13:35.73\00:13:37.71 I would think He would get a surge of adrenaline, 00:13:37.74\00:13:40.99 but He wakes calmly. 00:13:41.02\00:13:42.77 And with just a word rebukes the winds 00:13:42.80\00:13:45.22 and the waves and the storm melts away into a gentle calm. 00:13:45.25\00:13:50.95 "And He said unto them, why are ye so fearful? 00:13:50.98\00:13:54.85 How is it that ye have no faith? 00:13:54.88\00:13:57.52 And they feared exceedingly, and said one to another, 00:13:57.55\00:14:01.29 what manner of man is this, that even the wind 00:14:01.32\00:14:04.35 and the sea obey Him?" 00:14:04.38\00:14:07.77 Put yourself in the place of Jesus, 00:14:07.80\00:14:10.76 would you have woken up calm? 00:14:10.79\00:14:13.62 I've been there so I know I wouldn't. 00:14:13.65\00:14:16.80 How is it that Jesus could do this? 00:14:16.83\00:14:19.98 Because He was daily baptized with the spirit of repentance, 00:14:20.01\00:14:23.56 He was daily dying to self 00:14:23.59\00:14:25.52 and choosing to live in the will of His Father. 00:14:25.55\00:14:29.78 This made a difference in every part of His life, 00:14:29.81\00:14:33.88 even in the area of fear. 00:14:33.91\00:14:35.89 He woke up in peace. 00:14:35.92\00:14:38.72 How did He do that? 00:14:38.75\00:14:40.29 Well, one of my favorite authors once wrote, 00:14:40.32\00:14:44.02 "It is the love of self that destroys our peace. 00:14:44.05\00:14:47.80 While self is all alive, 00:14:47.83\00:14:49.85 we stand ready continually to guard it from mortification 00:14:49.88\00:14:53.48 and insult, but when we are dead, 00:14:53.51\00:14:56.47 and our life is hid with Christ in God, 00:14:56.50\00:14:59.53 we shall not take neglects or slights to heart. 00:14:59.56\00:15:03.20 We shall be deaf to reproach and blind to scorn and insult." 00:15:03.23\00:15:09.37 If we are living in the center of the Father's will, 00:15:09.40\00:15:12.80 nothing can happen or will happen 00:15:12.83\00:15:15.12 without His authorization. 00:15:15.15\00:15:17.49 So we never need to worry or fret. 00:15:17.52\00:15:20.83 Jesus did not, and we don't need to either 00:15:20.86\00:15:23.46 if we choose the same faith Jesus chose. 00:15:23.49\00:15:27.49 Trust is the basis for a successful love relationship 00:15:27.52\00:15:31.57 whether horizontal or vertical. 00:15:31.60\00:15:35.02 And that's why Jesus could say in John 10:17, 00:15:35.05\00:15:38.67 "Therefore doth my Father love me, 00:15:38.70\00:15:41.51 because I willingly lay down my life, 00:15:41.54\00:15:44.99 that I might take it again." 00:15:45.02\00:15:47.45 Now most of us think, His death happened at the cross 00:15:47.48\00:15:50.68 and that's partially correct. 00:15:50.71\00:15:53.27 It was played out and finished on the cross, 00:15:53.30\00:15:56.31 but the real death to self? 00:15:56.34\00:15:58.59 The real baptism in a cup happened the night before 00:15:58.62\00:16:03.10 in the Garden of Gethsemane. 00:16:03.13\00:16:06.68 The olive tree is an evergreen 00:16:06.71\00:16:08.53 that can grow 50 feet tall and with the spread of 30 feet 00:16:08.56\00:16:12.74 except for a few diseases that can take it out, 00:16:12.77\00:16:14.84 it's said that the olive tree will never die. 00:16:14.87\00:16:18.21 Its root system is robust 00:16:18.24\00:16:19.76 and is capable of regenerating the tree 00:16:19.79\00:16:22.19 even if the above ground structure is destroyed. 00:16:22.22\00:16:25.07 During the siege of Jerusalem by the Roman armies in AD 70, 00:16:25.10\00:16:29.31 the Romans cut all the trees down 00:16:29.34\00:16:31.05 around the city to help build the siege rams. 00:16:31.08\00:16:33.93 So it's unlikely that any of the trees 00:16:33.96\00:16:35.63 Jesus prayed under are still here. 00:16:35.66\00:16:38.36 But here in the Garden of Gethsemane 00:16:38.39\00:16:40.42 are some trees that may well have grown up 00:16:40.45\00:16:43.20 from the roots of those that were here then. 00:16:43.23\00:16:46.11 I wanted you to see the descendants of these trees 00:16:46.14\00:16:48.89 that witnessed the great struggle of Jesus. 00:16:48.92\00:16:51.57 Before it was right here or very near by 00:16:51.60\00:16:55.16 that Jesus was faced with a grave decision. 00:16:55.19\00:16:58.89 Would He willingly do what His Father asked of Him? 00:16:58.92\00:17:02.09 Or would He choose to follow His feelings? 00:17:02.12\00:17:05.58 And this is the same question 00:17:05.61\00:17:06.98 that we are faced with each and every day. 00:17:07.01\00:17:09.30 Will we keep the Sabbath that Jesus made for mankind? 00:17:09.33\00:17:12.66 And will we love our enemies the way that Jesus taught us to? 00:17:12.69\00:17:17.07 Will we humble our proud hearts and wash one another's feet? 00:17:17.10\00:17:21.40 Will we seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness? 00:17:21.43\00:17:26.34 In this case Jesus was being asked to die for people 00:17:26.37\00:17:29.42 who didn't understand or even care. 00:17:29.45\00:17:33.13 Now His fears are awakened 00:17:33.16\00:17:34.68 by the tons of the demon's whispers. 00:17:34.71\00:17:37.11 God hates sin so much you will never be with Him again. 00:17:37.14\00:17:41.50 If you die now you may die forever, 00:17:41.53\00:17:44.06 never to be with your Father again. 00:17:44.09\00:17:46.33 These people are not worth it. 00:17:46.36\00:17:48.75 The cup begins to tremble in His hands, 00:17:48.78\00:17:52.01 so He prays harder, 00:17:52.04\00:17:53.41 "Saying. Father, if thou be willing, 00:17:53.44\00:17:56.00 remove this cup from me, 00:17:56.03\00:17:58.05 nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done." 00:17:58.08\00:18:03.14 He wasn't asking Father, what is your will? 00:18:03.17\00:18:06.65 He already knew what the Father was asking of Him. 00:18:06.68\00:18:09.31 He was praying that His human heart 00:18:09.34\00:18:11.19 which cease to clammer for deliverance. 00:18:11.22\00:18:14.23 He was praying for the comfort 00:18:14.26\00:18:15.78 that comes from obedience, born of repentance. 00:18:15.81\00:18:19.83 His prayer for deliverance goes unanswered. 00:18:19.86\00:18:23.30 The silence of God is deafening. 00:18:23.33\00:18:26.34 The cup trembles in His hands. 00:18:26.37\00:18:28.18 It's a bitter cup full of the wrath that God has for sin. 00:18:28.21\00:18:32.17 A load of sin from all mankind begins to snuff out His life. 00:18:32.20\00:18:37.75 But He can't die here. 00:18:37.78\00:18:39.15 He can't die now. 00:18:39.18\00:18:41.30 That would not fulfill the prophecies. 00:18:41.33\00:18:44.26 So the Father sends an angel to strengthen Him, 00:18:44.29\00:18:47.38 thus prolonging the pain of our dear Savior. 00:18:47.41\00:18:52.34 I can see it with divine imagination 00:18:52.37\00:18:55.50 Jesus on the ground holding the baptismal cup. 00:18:55.53\00:18:59.82 And there's not enough room for self 00:18:59.85\00:19:01.50 if you have been baptized in a cup. 00:19:01.53\00:19:03.91 The self must die and be left aside. 00:19:03.94\00:19:07.43 If you would be submerged in true repentant baptism, 00:19:07.46\00:19:11.25 there's no room for self to live. 00:19:11.28\00:19:13.88 As His life begins to ebb away, 00:19:13.91\00:19:16.18 there in that darkness of the night, 00:19:16.21\00:19:18.88 a glow begins to form around the head of Jesus. 00:19:18.91\00:19:21.89 As He looks up through eyes blurred with tears, 00:19:21.92\00:19:25.19 He sees an angel on the ground there before Him. 00:19:25.22\00:19:28.51 And with purposeful intent the angel reaches out 00:19:28.54\00:19:32.77 and folding Christ weak and trembling hands, 00:19:32.80\00:19:36.74 making steady the spiritual chalice that bitter cup. 00:19:36.77\00:19:42.01 The angel looks deep into the eyes of our Savior 00:19:42.04\00:19:45.10 and says, "Drink ye all of it." 00:19:45.13\00:19:48.73 It is hard now but the bitter must come before the sweet. 00:19:48.76\00:19:53.12 There will be countless souls in heaven 00:19:53.15\00:19:55.23 who respond to your gift, your sacrifice 00:19:55.26\00:19:59.12 though all men should forsake you, 00:19:59.15\00:20:00.74 though it appears your father has forsaken you. 00:20:00.77\00:20:04.18 You are not alone, endure by faith, endure. 00:20:04.21\00:20:09.28 And that was the beginning of the miracle, 00:20:13.32\00:20:16.93 a very real miracle that can be ours as well. 00:20:16.96\00:20:21.90 I can't imagine the struggle Jesus went through 00:20:21.93\00:20:24.70 and He did it for me, He did it for you. 00:20:24.73\00:20:27.47 And a fantastic miracle occurred right here in the garden. 00:20:27.50\00:20:30.27 The Father actually granted Him His request. 00:20:30.30\00:20:32.87 Not the first one let this cup pass from me, 00:20:32.90\00:20:35.71 but the second one, not my will but thy will be done. 00:20:35.74\00:20:40.47 God anointed Jesus with the divine nature 00:20:40.50\00:20:42.38 just like He will do 00:20:42.41\00:20:43.78 for every believing repenting child of God. 00:20:43.81\00:20:46.24 He actually took Jesus' right brain, 00:20:46.27\00:20:48.09 His emotions, His heart 00:20:48.12\00:20:49.70 and changed them so that what He really wanted 00:20:49.73\00:20:52.40 was exactly what His Father wanted. 00:20:52.43\00:20:54.86 Jesus' will was swallowed up in the will of God. 00:20:54.89\00:20:58.83 There was a gift that came from the outside, 00:20:58.86\00:21:00.70 from heavenly places 00:21:00.73\00:21:02.47 into the very mind and heart of Jesus. 00:21:02.50\00:21:04.99 With three biblical proofs I can confirm 00:21:05.02\00:21:07.17 this miracle took place right here in Gethsemane. 00:21:07.20\00:21:10.18 These stories prove that Jesus experienced 00:21:10.21\00:21:12.45 true baptism and true repentance. 00:21:12.48\00:21:15.36 Torch lights could be seen coming down from Mount Zion. 00:21:15.39\00:21:18.44 A mob sent from the priests and elders with swords and clubs. 00:21:18.47\00:21:21.85 His own disciple Judas was leading them. 00:21:21.88\00:21:24.27 He led them to Jesus and he kissed Him, 00:21:24.30\00:21:26.70 defending love and friendship. 00:21:26.73\00:21:28.35 If you have ever been betrayed 00:21:28.38\00:21:29.97 then you know how repugnant that act was. 00:21:30.00\00:21:32.41 Here's the first proof recorded by Matthew. 00:21:32.44\00:21:35.57 "And Jesus said to him, 'Friend, why have you come?'" 00:21:35.60\00:21:39.43 Jesus called Judas, friend. 00:21:39.46\00:21:42.06 Not friend, but friend. 00:21:42.09\00:21:45.74 This is not natural human behavior for someone 00:21:45.77\00:21:47.86 who's being betrayed but it is divine behavior. 00:21:47.89\00:21:51.25 Jesus died to self, to human thoughts and feelings. 00:21:51.28\00:21:54.41 And now through this miracle of God 00:21:54.44\00:21:56.35 He felt about things the way His Father did 00:21:56.38\00:21:58.79 and He acted accordingly. 00:21:58.82\00:22:00.65 That is what true baptism is all about. 00:22:00.68\00:22:03.67 To love your enemy, 00:22:03.70\00:22:05.07 to speak kindly to your betrayer, that's a miracle. 00:22:05.10\00:22:08.59 The second miracle is found in John 18:10. 00:22:08.62\00:22:11.40 When Peter pulled out his sword 00:22:11.43\00:22:12.80 and cut off the high priest servant's ear. 00:22:12.83\00:22:14.93 This is the stuff that every movie is made of, 00:22:14.96\00:22:17.13 there's not an action hero, not one high drama thriller 00:22:17.16\00:22:20.27 where they don't use their strength 00:22:20.30\00:22:21.70 and power to deliver self. 00:22:21.73\00:22:24.43 But not Jesus, for Him self had already died in the garden. 00:22:24.46\00:22:30.04 "Then said Jesus unto Peter, 00:22:30.07\00:22:31.50 put up thy sword into the sheath, 00:22:31.53\00:22:33.33 the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?" 00:22:33.36\00:22:37.35 Now it's time to go the cross to drink the bitter cup. 00:22:37.38\00:22:40.80 Instead of fighting for His own rights, 00:22:40.83\00:22:42.52 for His own life, He willingly laid it down. 00:22:42.55\00:22:46.02 That's the second miracle. 00:22:46.05\00:22:48.11 The final miracle came the next day 00:22:48.14\00:22:49.98 as they hung Him on the cross 00:22:50.01\00:22:51.43 and then gambled for His clothes. 00:22:51.46\00:22:53.52 Instead of whining, cursing or crying, 00:22:53.55\00:22:56.24 He prayed for those who were doing him wrong. 00:22:56.27\00:22:59.25 "Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them 00:22:59.28\00:23:02.34 for they know not what they do." 00:23:02.37\00:23:04.55 Praying for those who are mistreating you 00:23:04.58\00:23:06.01 is another miracle that clearly demonstrates 00:23:06.04\00:23:08.63 Jesus' baptism in the garden. 00:23:08.66\00:23:11.09 That's where He really died to self. 00:23:11.12\00:23:13.46 That's where He was baptized in a cup. 00:23:13.49\00:23:17.27 The baptismal service like marriage 00:23:17.30\00:23:19.71 is a beautiful ceremony. 00:23:19.74\00:23:21.53 I've enjoyed watching many people 00:23:21.56\00:23:23.13 throughout the years stand before the minister 00:23:23.16\00:23:25.19 and with love in their eyes and voice 00:23:25.22\00:23:27.07 to make that sound vow, "I do." 00:23:27.10\00:23:30.28 But now I'm coming to realize 00:23:30.31\00:23:31.80 that for the most part they probably didn't 00:23:31.83\00:23:34.04 fully comprehend what they were saying, yes, to. 00:23:34.07\00:23:37.08 The same was true for me 00:23:37.11\00:23:38.48 in regard to my relationship with the Lord. 00:23:38.51\00:23:41.05 At 16 years of age, I said, "I do to the Lord." 00:23:41.08\00:23:45.47 I was baptized saying, 00:23:45.50\00:23:47.05 yes, to everything I understood at that time. 00:23:47.08\00:23:50.82 That was five years ago and as I look at myself then, 00:23:50.85\00:23:54.29 I can't help but smile and shake my head at my naivety. 00:23:54.32\00:23:58.38 I had much to learn. 00:23:58.41\00:24:01.29 For example, the Bible says, we're saved by grace. 00:24:01.32\00:24:05.29 I embraced that truth without fully understanding it 00:24:05.32\00:24:08.24 and then took off down the non-denominational path. 00:24:08.27\00:24:11.58 But now I've learned that grace according to Titus 2:12, 00:24:11.61\00:24:16.18 "Teaches us to deny ungodliness and worldly lusts 00:24:16.21\00:24:20.34 and to live soberly, righteously and godly in the present age." 00:24:20.37\00:24:26.27 Grace, according to all of Scripture 00:24:26.30\00:24:29.22 promises to give us the life of Jesus. 00:24:29.25\00:24:32.44 The life of death to self and the new life 00:24:32.47\00:24:35.48 that comes with the new heart, He gives to all who ask for it. 00:24:35.51\00:24:40.38 Now what does that look like in the real world? 00:24:40.41\00:24:43.44 Well, for me death to self means giving up the movies, 00:24:43.47\00:24:47.61 the television and the music 00:24:47.64\00:24:49.41 that doesn't bring me closer to Christ. 00:24:49.44\00:24:52.06 It means giving up the way I prefer to dress. 00:24:52.09\00:24:54.86 The clothing that brings me 00:24:54.89\00:24:56.26 more attention than it does my Savior. 00:24:56.29\00:24:58.83 Death to self means giving up my dream of becoming 00:24:58.86\00:25:01.82 a sought-after sports broadcaster 00:25:01.85\00:25:04.08 and replacing it with God's plan for my life. 00:25:04.11\00:25:07.90 It means giving up my focus on popularity and success 00:25:07.93\00:25:11.78 and caring more about God's goals. 00:25:11.81\00:25:14.56 And it means waking up every morning 00:25:14.59\00:25:16.90 and just asking God how He wants me to spend my day. 00:25:16.93\00:25:19.93 What He wants me to do, to say, to eat, to think, everything. 00:25:19.96\00:25:24.39 And let me tell you 00:25:24.42\00:25:25.79 Andrea Endries can be a stubborn person to kill. 00:25:25.82\00:25:29.48 But throughout the last five years 00:25:29.51\00:25:31.61 God has been guiding me through my Garden of Gethsemane. 00:25:31.64\00:25:35.47 So today, I'm choosing to enter that same experience 00:25:35.50\00:25:39.11 of Jesus at the Jordan, here in Israel. 00:25:39.14\00:25:42.60 The same baptism, the same repentance 00:25:42.63\00:25:45.58 that leads to fulfilling all righteousness, 00:25:45.61\00:25:49.18 I'm choosing death to self and the born again heart 00:25:49.21\00:25:53.36 that leads me to a new life in Christ. 00:25:53.39\00:25:56.63 Jesus' baptism at the Jordan River 00:25:59.52\00:26:01.67 was symbolic of what He did every day of His life. 00:26:01.70\00:26:05.58 He took up His cross daily. 00:26:05.61\00:26:07.71 He died to self daily 00:26:07.74\00:26:09.70 and followed the will of our Father in heaven. 00:26:09.73\00:26:13.11 The Jordan baptism was symbolic, 00:26:13.14\00:26:15.35 but in the Garden of Gethsemane it was literal. 00:26:15.38\00:26:19.28 True baptism is not a sacred right that guarantees you 00:26:19.31\00:26:23.10 a new and happy life in Christ anymore 00:26:23.13\00:26:26.03 than having a wedding ceremony guarantees you 00:26:26.06\00:26:28.49 a wonderful and happy marriage. 00:26:28.52\00:26:31.04 Baptism is a sacred ordinance 00:26:31.07\00:26:33.75 that testifies of your choice to die to self 00:26:33.78\00:26:36.95 and embrace the new life that Christ provides 00:26:36.98\00:26:40.09 through daily Bible study prayer 00:26:40.12\00:26:42.39 and sharing your faith. 00:26:42.42\00:26:44.46 For baptism to be of any value we must like Christ, 00:26:44.49\00:26:48.73 allow the Father's will to be our will, 00:26:48.76\00:26:51.60 even when He asks the hard thing. 00:26:51.63\00:26:54.28 We must embrace His gift of repentance and His new heart. 00:26:54.31\00:26:59.05 So who should be baptized? 00:26:59.08\00:27:02.85 Those who are receiving the new heart of repentance, 00:27:02.88\00:27:06.25 feeling about things the way God does 00:27:06.28\00:27:08.46 and receiving a changed life. 00:27:08.49\00:27:11.47 Those who are willing to die to self 00:27:11.50\00:27:13.48 and let Jesus live in them, 00:27:13.51\00:27:16.21 those who believe in Jesus and His doctrines 00:27:16.24\00:27:19.83 and choose to be followers 00:27:19.86\00:27:21.50 of this repentant dying to self man. 00:27:21.53\00:27:25.67 Those who wish to become part of the body of Jesus Christ, 00:27:25.70\00:27:29.98 the church and those who want to be with Christ now 00:27:30.01\00:27:34.52 and finally forever with Him in heaven. 00:27:34.55\00:27:38.72 So what about you, friend? 00:27:38.75\00:27:40.78 Would you like to follow Jesus into a new and abundant life? 00:27:40.81\00:27:45.35
