A platoon of new recruits pile off the bus 00:00:01.40\00:00:03.52 and loosely line up. 00:00:03.55\00:00:05.87 The drill sergeant starts in complaining 00:00:05.90\00:00:08.08 that he hasn't even been given men to work with. 00:00:08.11\00:00:12.10 "You think you're something" he shouts. 00:00:12.13\00:00:14.61 "But you're nothing, nothing, 00:00:14.64\00:00:16.96 absolutely nothing and I'm in charge." 00:00:16.99\00:00:20.57 "Big deal," says the recruit at the end of the line. 00:00:20.60\00:00:23.93 "So you're in charge of nothing." 00:00:23.96\00:00:26.39 I've heard it said that if Jesus is not Lord of all, 00:00:26.42\00:00:30.79 then He's not Lord at all. 00:00:30.82\00:00:33.73 The Lordship of Christ is in fact 00:00:33.76\00:00:35.81 the crucible issue for Christianity today. 00:00:35.84\00:00:38.62 Was Jesus really Emmanuel, God with us? 00:00:38.65\00:00:43.36 And if He is God, then is He Lord of all? 00:00:43.39\00:00:48.48 One of the doctrines of Jesus that caused 00:00:48.51\00:00:50.50 a great deal of political thunder was this. 00:00:50.53\00:00:53.89 "The Son of man is Lord - even of the Sabbath day." 00:00:53.92\00:00:59.31 What most people don't realize is that 00:00:59.34\00:01:02.20 that claim is more than a claim of Lordship over our hearts. 00:01:02.23\00:01:05.98 It's also a claim of Lordship of our time. 00:01:06.01\00:01:10.23 There really is little value in being in charge of, 00:02:02.62\00:02:05.65 well, nothing. 00:02:05.68\00:02:08.04 It really makes no sense to say you're a parent 00:02:08.07\00:02:10.60 when you have no children. 00:02:10.63\00:02:12.51 Or to say you're the boss when you have no employees. 00:02:12.54\00:02:16.53 In Matthew 12:8, Jesus claimed 00:02:16.56\00:02:19.18 to be Lord of something, the Sabbath. 00:02:19.21\00:02:23.91 But if there's no Sabbath, He would be Lord of nothing, 00:02:23.94\00:02:27.55 instead of Lord of something. 00:02:27.58\00:02:29.85 So what is this teaching of Jesus 00:02:29.88\00:02:32.02 that caused such a commotion? 00:02:32.05\00:02:33.96 What is this Sabbath? 00:02:33.99\00:02:35.61 This 1/7th in time that Jesus said He was Lord of. 00:02:35.64\00:02:40.73 Stephen is standing by to help us answer this question. 00:02:40.76\00:02:44.59 Thanks, Charles. 00:02:44.62\00:02:45.99 I'm standing on the Mount of Olives 00:02:46.02\00:02:47.39 just east of Jerusalem to show you 00:02:47.42\00:02:49.10 how far a Sabbath day's journey is. 00:02:49.13\00:02:51.50 It was permissible to walk from Jerusalem to here 00:02:51.53\00:02:53.69 and still keep the Sabbath holy. 00:02:53.72\00:02:55.72 Originally, a Sabbath's journey was just 2,000 cubits. 00:02:55.75\00:02:59.56 But over time, it was modified to 4,000 cubits or about 1 mile. 00:02:59.59\00:03:04.30 While the concept about Sabbath day's journey 00:03:04.33\00:03:06.80 is mentioned in Acts 1:12, 00:03:06.83\00:03:08.89 it's not a commandment of scripture, 00:03:08.92\00:03:10.95 but an added oral law of the Rabbis or the Mishnah. 00:03:10.98\00:03:14.88 Even in Christ's day, the laws regarding Sabbath 00:03:14.91\00:03:17.53 had been expanded. 00:03:17.56\00:03:19.27 The Sabbath had become a burden instead of a blessing. 00:03:19.30\00:03:22.00 Man's addition of legalistic rules 00:03:22.03\00:03:24.03 regarding the Sabbath has clouded the fact 00:03:24.06\00:03:26.00 that the Sabbath is really an issue of time. 00:03:26.03\00:03:29.31 We live in time. 00:03:29.34\00:03:30.75 Time is represented all around us. 00:03:30.78\00:03:32.78 From grandfather clocks to iPhones, 00:03:32.81\00:03:35.17 wristwatches, and timers, 00:03:35.20\00:03:36.94 from timeouts to on time, it's everywhere. 00:03:36.97\00:03:40.51 Time is, in fact, a created construct. 00:03:40.54\00:03:43.80 It's the arena in which 00:03:43.83\00:03:45.20 the game of life is played out and experienced. 00:03:45.23\00:03:48.00 Time is there just like air, lived in and experienced, 00:03:48.03\00:03:51.59 though not always in the forefront of our consciousness. 00:03:51.62\00:03:54.97 I'd like to share a thought with you. 00:03:55.00\00:03:56.72 For some, this may be a new thought, 00:03:56.75\00:03:59.22 but the God of all creation, the God who organized 00:03:59.25\00:04:02.94 the immensely complex language of DNA, 00:04:02.97\00:04:05.71 the God who sent His Son to this planet to live for us, 00:04:05.74\00:04:09.11 to die for us, wants to spend time with you. 00:04:09.14\00:04:12.65 In fact, the creator of all things 00:04:12.68\00:04:14.99 set aside a certain time each week 00:04:15.02\00:04:16.87 for intimate communion and fellowship. 00:04:16.90\00:04:19.52 This time is set more surely than a doctor's appointment, 00:04:19.55\00:04:22.57 the work schedule, or even a family vacation. 00:04:22.60\00:04:25.57 It's called Sabbath. 00:04:25.60\00:04:27.89 Some people have been misinformed 00:04:27.92\00:04:29.64 about this time God set aside. 00:04:29.67\00:04:31.23 They've been told that the Sabbath is made for the Jews. 00:04:31.26\00:04:34.54 I hear that all the time, 00:04:34.57\00:04:35.94 but it couldn't be further from the truth. 00:04:35.97\00:04:37.91 To get this story straight, 00:04:37.94\00:04:39.51 one need merely look at the Book of Genesis. 00:04:39.54\00:04:42.07 Man was created on the sixth day of creation. 00:04:42.10\00:04:45.15 The inspired author of Genesis goes on to tell us 00:04:45.18\00:04:48.47 in Chapter 2:3 that on the seventh day, 00:04:48.50\00:04:51.42 God created the Sabbath, 00:04:51.45\00:04:53.40 a space of time to be used for rest. 00:04:53.43\00:04:57.10 Okay, now don't miss this. 00:04:57.13\00:04:58.93 If you drew a timeline of creation, 00:04:58.96\00:05:00.89 Adam and Eve were created sometime 00:05:00.92\00:05:02.98 during what we now call Friday. 00:05:03.01\00:05:04.83 A few hours later at sunset, 00:05:04.86\00:05:06.70 God invites Adam and Eve to rest. 00:05:06.73\00:05:09.40 Rest? Rest from what? 00:05:09.43\00:05:11.69 They're not even 24 hours old. 00:05:11.72\00:05:13.73 So you know they're not at all tired. 00:05:13.76\00:05:15.56 But Adam and Eve weren't being asked to rest from anything. 00:05:15.59\00:05:19.40 They were being asked to rest in something. 00:05:19.43\00:05:22.89 They were being invited to rest 00:05:22.92\00:05:24.40 in the finished work of God's creation. 00:05:24.43\00:05:27.44 And how many Jews were in the Garden of Eden 00:05:27.47\00:05:29.38 at the beginning of the world? 00:05:29.41\00:05:31.15 None. Really, check it out. 00:05:31.18\00:05:34.18 The Sabbath was given to perfect people 00:05:34.21\00:05:36.33 in a perfect world with no taint of sin. 00:05:36.36\00:05:38.82 The weekly Sabbath was not a type 00:05:38.85\00:05:40.98 or a shadow of things to come, 00:05:41.01\00:05:43.08 but a living memorial of time 00:05:43.11\00:05:45.49 in honor of God's creative power. 00:05:45.52\00:05:48.44 Genesis 2:2, 3 tells us. 00:05:48.47\00:05:51.15 "And on the seventh day God ended His work 00:05:51.18\00:05:53.37 which He had made and He rested on the seventh day 00:05:53.40\00:05:56.04 from all His work which He had made. 00:05:56.07\00:05:58.09 And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it, 00:05:58.12\00:06:01.46 because that in it He had rested 00:06:01.49\00:06:03.21 from all His work which God created and made." 00:06:03.24\00:06:07.24 It's important here to notice that after creating for 7 days, 00:06:07.27\00:06:10.88 the very first thing God ever made holy, 00:06:10.91\00:06:13.42 the very first thing He ever sanctified was time. 00:06:13.45\00:06:17.72 He called it Sabbath. 00:06:17.75\00:06:20.59 Some have suggested that the Sabbath 00:06:20.62\00:06:22.41 was just a time for God to rest, as stated here in Genesis. 00:06:22.44\00:06:25.91 But to come to that limited conclusion, 00:06:25.94\00:06:28.50 you must ignore the plain words of Jesus. 00:06:28.53\00:06:32.34 That's so true, Stephen. 00:06:32.37\00:06:34.30 And Jesus Himself stated why He created the Sabbath. 00:06:34.33\00:06:37.55 You'll find that in Mark Chapter 2. 00:06:37.58\00:06:39.68 Jesus was walking with His disciples 00:06:39.71\00:06:42.52 through a grain field one Sabbath afternoon. 00:06:42.55\00:06:46.05 His disciples were hungry, 00:06:46.08\00:06:48.61 so they took some grain in their hands. 00:06:48.64\00:06:51.01 They brushed the husks off and they ate it. 00:06:51.04\00:06:54.65 This greatly troubled the Pharisees 00:06:54.68\00:06:56.69 not because the disciples were stealing for its permissible 00:06:56.72\00:06:59.54 according to God's law to eat, to satisfy one's hungry. 00:06:59.57\00:07:03.02 But to the Pharisees the disciples were harvesting 00:07:03.05\00:07:05.91 on Sabbath which was work. 00:07:05.94\00:07:08.40 And working on Sabbath is unlawful. 00:07:08.43\00:07:11.47 The Jewish leaders had taken the law and made it an idol. 00:07:11.50\00:07:15.40 And they accused Jesus of breaking the very law 00:07:15.43\00:07:19.09 that He had given to Moses. 00:07:19.12\00:07:21.70 And here is where Jesus doctrines, His teachings 00:07:21.73\00:07:24.91 create a great deal of thunder in the Holy Land. 00:07:24.94\00:07:28.58 He claimed to be the Lord, the Creator of the Sabbath. 00:07:28.61\00:07:32.90 And then Jesus says, 00:07:32.93\00:07:35.25 about the day that He created back in Genesis, 00:07:35.28\00:07:37.89 "The Sabbath was made for man, 00:07:37.92\00:07:40.64 and not man for the Sabbath." 00:07:40.67\00:07:42.98 Now don't miss this. 00:07:43.01\00:07:44.49 The Sabbath was not merely for God to rest 00:07:44.52\00:07:47.56 and the Sabbath was not made for the Jews. 00:07:47.59\00:07:51.22 Jesus taught it's a doctrine of Christ 00:07:51.25\00:07:54.43 that the Sabbath was made for mankind, all of us, 00:07:54.46\00:07:59.19 prefect people, as well as sinners. 00:07:59.22\00:08:01.63 Unfortunately, traditions had grown up 00:08:01.67\00:08:04.29 around the Sabbath that made it a burden, even a curse. 00:08:04.32\00:08:07.52 But Jesus, who is the Lord of the Sabbath, 00:08:07.55\00:08:10.60 came to put His law back in its proper place. 00:08:10.63\00:08:14.31 You see, the Sabbath is not some burden to be borne. 00:08:14.34\00:08:18.40 It's not a penance inflicted upon us to create holiness. 00:08:18.43\00:08:22.51 The Sabbath is God's gift 00:08:22.54\00:08:24.60 of His personal presence to all mankind. 00:08:24.63\00:08:28.83 Even Moses knew this. 00:08:28.86\00:08:30.89 When God sent him to Egypt 00:08:30.92\00:08:32.57 to deliver the Israelites from bondage, 00:08:32.60\00:08:34.37 the very first thing He did was to insist 00:08:34.40\00:08:37.88 that they stop working on Sabbath. 00:08:37.91\00:08:40.01 Moses reminded the children of Israel 00:08:40.04\00:08:42.68 that this was God's Holy Time; time set aside to rest. 00:08:42.71\00:08:46.88 Rest from their slave labor? No. 00:08:46.91\00:08:50.43 They were to rest in His delivering power 00:08:50.46\00:08:53.16 and His awesome might. 00:08:53.19\00:08:54.87 God's people again began keeping the Sabbath 00:08:54.90\00:08:59.29 before they even left Egypt and went to Sinai. 00:08:59.32\00:09:02.28 This is why Pharaoh began to complain. 00:09:02.31\00:09:04.05 Exodus 5:5 says, "And Pharaoh said, 00:09:04.08\00:09:07.43 Behold, the people of the land are now many, 00:09:07.46\00:09:10.11 and you Moses and Aaron 00:09:10.14\00:09:12.07 make them rest from their burdens." 00:09:12.10\00:09:14.67 The word rest here in Hebrew, the word Shabath or Sabbath. 00:09:14.70\00:09:19.36 At this point, the people hadn't even gotten to Mount Sinai. 00:09:19.39\00:09:23.15 The Ten Commandments had not yet been written in stone. 00:09:23.18\00:09:26.14 But God's people in very generation have known 00:09:26.17\00:09:29.54 that God desires to spend intimate and special time 00:09:29.57\00:09:33.07 each week with His children. 00:09:33.10\00:09:34.90 This is why God gave His people the Sabbath back in Eden. 00:09:34.93\00:09:38.39 And this is why the Lord of the Sabbath 00:09:38.42\00:09:40.40 wrote with His own finger this command in stone. 00:09:40.43\00:09:43.88 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy." 00:09:43.91\00:09:47.05 The command begins with the word remember, 00:09:47.08\00:09:49.73 because they already knew about the Sabbath. 00:09:49.76\00:09:52.05 This is a gift of time. 00:09:52.08\00:09:53.94 God wants to use this time to fellowship with us, 00:09:53.97\00:09:56.67 to commune with us in a special way. 00:09:56.70\00:09:58.98 It's His purpose to use this time 00:09:59.01\00:10:01.00 to bring restoration in our lives, to our homes. 00:10:01.03\00:10:04.38 He wants to use this time to heal marriages, 00:10:04.41\00:10:07.92 to bless our communities. 00:10:07.95\00:10:10.02 That's good news, Levi. 00:10:10.05\00:10:12.28 But two questions here beg to be asked. 00:10:12.31\00:10:15.15 First, the Jews here in Israel keep Saturday as the Sabbath. 00:10:15.18\00:10:19.51 But how do we know that Saturday 00:10:19.54\00:10:21.50 is the correct day for the Sabbath? 00:10:21.53\00:10:23.97 Maybe the weekly cycle has been changed or lost track of. 00:10:24.00\00:10:28.09 How can we know that God's Sabbath 00:10:28.12\00:10:30.14 is not Friday or Sunday or Tuesday? 00:10:30.17\00:10:33.52 To help me nail this down, I've asked Shalom David, 00:10:33.55\00:10:36.15 a Jew, who pastors here in the Jerusalem 00:10:36.18\00:10:38.39 how we can know that our present Saturday 00:10:38.42\00:10:41.11 is the Sabbath of Jesus. 00:10:41.14\00:10:43.25 Well, first you need to understand that 00:10:43.28\00:10:45.36 history is written to give us continuity with the past. 00:10:45.39\00:10:49.07 In Exodus Chapter 16, we're told 00:10:49.10\00:10:51.41 that God gave the people bread to eat. 00:10:51.44\00:10:53.71 Most people have heard the story about their manna. 00:10:53.74\00:10:56.60 But when you carefully read the entire Chapter of Exodus 16, 00:10:56.63\00:11:00.54 you discover that God was testing them 00:11:00.57\00:11:02.73 through this process. 00:11:02.76\00:11:04.36 The manna God sent from Heaven 00:11:04.39\00:11:05.76 would only fall for 6 days, Sunday through Friday. 00:11:05.79\00:11:09.19 Each day, the children of Israel 00:11:09.22\00:11:11.79 were to gather one omer or about 3½ liter for each man. 00:11:11.82\00:11:16.31 If they gather more than the amount 00:11:16.34\00:11:18.52 and try to keep it overnight, 00:11:18.55\00:11:20.46 it would spoil before the next day. 00:11:20.49\00:11:22.98 On the seventh day, the Sabbath, 00:11:23.01\00:11:25.22 no manna would fall so that people 00:11:25.25\00:11:27.27 were commanded together two omers on Friday. 00:11:27.30\00:11:30.70 But the extra omer of manna gathered on the preparation day 00:11:30.73\00:11:34.32 was miraculously preserved 00:11:34.35\00:11:36.03 and was good to eat on the Sabbath. 00:11:36.06\00:11:38.82 If this happened just one day or a month or two perhaps 00:11:38.85\00:11:42.94 that would be miracle enough. 00:11:42.97\00:11:45.28 But this went on for 40 years. 00:11:45.31\00:11:48.13 52 times every year God showed the people 00:11:48.16\00:11:51.87 by miraculous means what day was His Sabbath. 00:11:51.90\00:11:55.37 2,080 times God made clear 00:11:55.40\00:11:58.94 when He wanted to spend time with His people. 00:11:58.97\00:12:02.00 So how would that show us today 00:12:02.03\00:12:04.16 that this Saturday, now kept as Sabbath, 00:12:04.19\00:12:06.78 was the same Saturday Sabbath of the Exodus? 00:12:06.81\00:12:09.61 Because in the 12th Chapter at the beginning 00:12:09.64\00:12:11.77 of the Exodus journey into the wilderness, 00:12:11.80\00:12:14.20 God gave them a new calendar 00:12:14.23\00:12:16.34 which has been continuously observed 00:12:16.37\00:12:18.48 in the Jewish community to this very day. 00:12:18.51\00:12:21.60 There is absolutely no question 00:12:21.63\00:12:23.70 that this Saturday on your calendar 00:12:23.73\00:12:25.83 is the same Sabbath of the Jewish calendar 00:12:25.86\00:12:28.28 from the Exodus to this very day. 00:12:28.31\00:12:30.92 Okay, our Saturday 00:12:30.95\00:12:33.72 is the Sabbath of the Old Testament. 00:12:33.75\00:12:36.07 So here's the second question, 00:12:36.10\00:12:37.96 there is extensive tradition in the Christian world today 00:12:37.99\00:12:41.30 that the Sabbath was to be done away with 00:12:41.33\00:12:43.86 in the new dispensation. 00:12:43.89\00:12:45.50 Did Jesus really expect 00:12:45.53\00:12:47.58 Christian people in the new dispensation 00:12:47.61\00:12:49.55 to keep Saturday as a holy day? 00:12:49.58\00:12:52.18 Look, Jesus was a prophet. Was He not? 00:12:52.21\00:12:55.75 He predicted the destruction of Jerusalem 00:12:55.78\00:12:58.34 by the Romans in AD 70. 00:12:58.37\00:13:00.72 This would not happen for 40 years into the future. 00:13:00.75\00:13:03.73 In preparing His people for those terrible trying times, 00:13:03.76\00:13:07.58 He told them to pray. 00:13:07.61\00:13:09.86 "Pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, 00:13:09.89\00:13:13.41 neither on the Sabbath day." 00:13:13.44\00:13:16.31 So if Jesus had no intention of His disciples 00:13:16.34\00:13:19.02 keeping the Sabbath 40 years into the future, 00:13:19.05\00:13:21.50 then why would He tell His disciples to pray 00:13:21.53\00:13:23.53 that they would not have to flee on the Sabbath? 00:13:23.56\00:13:26.33 Exactly. That is precisely the point. 00:13:26.36\00:13:28.96 Using the manna, God was testing the people, 00:13:28.99\00:13:31.59 would they let Him be their God 00:13:31.62\00:13:33.54 or would they make gods of their own reason. 00:13:33.57\00:13:36.67 And He is still testing us to this very point today. 00:13:36.70\00:13:40.37 What do we do with the God of creation 00:13:40.40\00:13:43.23 with Jesus and His Sabbath? 00:13:43.26\00:13:46.53 Stephen, Levi, and Andrea have helped us understand 00:13:46.56\00:13:49.75 the history of the Sabbath, this time He made holy, 00:13:49.78\00:13:54.11 this time He wants to spend with us. 00:13:54.14\00:13:56.99 Time is one of the seven fundamental physical quantities 00:13:57.02\00:14:00.99 in the international system of units. 00:14:01.02\00:14:03.78 The great scientist, Sir Isaac Newton believed that 00:14:03.81\00:14:06.86 time is part of the fundamental structure of the universe, 00:14:06.89\00:14:10.94 a dimension in which events occur in sequence. 00:14:10.97\00:14:15.07 According to the author of Genesis, 00:14:15.10\00:14:16.87 time is marked and measured by heavenly bodies. 00:14:16.90\00:14:20.68 Days, months, and years are all determined 00:14:20.71\00:14:24.25 by the rotations and circuits of the earth and moon 00:14:24.28\00:14:27.71 in their journey through space. 00:14:27.74\00:14:30.00 The daily cycle is predicated upon 00:14:30.03\00:14:32.41 one earth rotation on its axis. 00:14:32.44\00:14:35.40 A monthly cycle is determined 00:14:35.43\00:14:37.16 by the sequence of the moon waxing and waning. 00:14:37.19\00:14:40.79 The yearly cycle happens when our blue orb 00:14:40.82\00:14:43.73 makes another circuit around the sun. 00:14:43.76\00:14:47.11 But can you tell me why we have a 7-day week? 00:14:47.14\00:14:50.50 It doesn't fit nicely into any planetary structure or pattern. 00:14:50.53\00:14:55.16 There is only one reason for a 7-day week, just one 00:14:55.19\00:15:00.83 because God in 6 literal days created our world. 00:15:00.86\00:15:05.38 That's the reason He gives in the Decalogue. 00:15:05.41\00:15:08.85 He created everything and then on the seventh day, He rested. 00:15:08.88\00:15:13.58 He paused to spend time 00:15:13.61\00:15:15.54 with His newest masterpiece, His intelligent creation. 00:15:15.57\00:15:19.35 And from that time to the present, 00:15:19.38\00:15:22.15 the weekly cycle has been made up of 7 consecutive days. 00:15:22.18\00:15:27.32 From that time to the present, God has set aside a Sabbath, 00:15:27.35\00:15:32.38 this weekly 24-hour period 00:15:32.41\00:15:34.52 to spend with those who love Him. 00:15:34.55\00:15:37.57 This time retunes us. 00:15:37.60\00:15:39.69 It balances our spirits and opens the door 00:15:39.72\00:15:42.56 of relationship between the creator and His creation. 00:15:42.59\00:15:47.62 This gift of time was a blessing 00:15:47.65\00:15:50.31 to perfect people in a perfect world. 00:15:50.34\00:15:52.87 And it's still a blessing today 00:15:52.90\00:15:55.24 for those who choose to spend it with Him. 00:15:55.27\00:15:58.80 Claudie English is God's friend. 00:15:58.83\00:16:02.25 It's a simple, uncomplicated relationship, 00:16:02.28\00:16:05.32 but it wasn't always that way. 00:16:05.35\00:16:07.21 In all his first 20 years, Claudie had nothing do with God. 00:16:07.24\00:16:11.38 He didn't have anything against religion. 00:16:11.41\00:16:13.47 He simply had no exposure to it. 00:16:13.50\00:16:16.76 But one night, Claudie saw some activity at the sports arena, 00:16:16.79\00:16:20.39 thought there might be a wrestling match. 00:16:20.42\00:16:22.58 What he ended up attending for the next 5 or 6 nights 00:16:22.61\00:16:26.07 was some meetings about Jesus and the Bible. 00:16:26.10\00:16:30.05 Though he hadn't learned much, 00:16:30.08\00:16:31.72 he was baptized following those meetings. 00:16:31.75\00:16:34.27 And in his heart, a single-minded flame of resolve 00:16:34.30\00:16:37.55 that was never to be extinguished 00:16:37.58\00:16:39.26 had been kindled in the deepest core of his being. 00:16:39.29\00:16:42.47 No matter what, he was going to be faithful to God. 00:16:42.50\00:16:47.07 He didn't know how. He just knew he would. 00:16:47.10\00:16:50.57 The second thing he knew about religion 00:16:50.60\00:16:52.92 was that from now on he would be going to church 00:16:52.95\00:16:55.41 on Saturday, the Sabbath of the Bible. 00:16:55.44\00:17:00.77 Shortly, after I was baptized, I was drafting into the army. 00:17:00.80\00:17:06.32 I thought, "Well, that will interfere with my Sabbath, 00:17:06.35\00:17:10.01 but I'm gonna keep the Sabbath regardless." 00:17:10.04\00:17:12.94 And keep the Sabbath, Claudie did. 00:17:12.97\00:17:15.44 From Sunday on Friday, till Sunday on Saturday, 00:17:15.47\00:17:17.86 he disqualified himself from the army 00:17:17.89\00:17:19.76 by not showing up for roll calls. 00:17:19.79\00:17:22.16 In an uncompromising way, Claudie had determined that 00:17:22.19\00:17:25.73 that time belonged to his creator. 00:17:25.76\00:17:29.15 I made them a good soldier for 6 days a week, 00:17:29.18\00:17:33.10 but the seventh day wasn't theirs. 00:17:33.13\00:17:36.16 It belonged to the Lord. And I served Him that day. 00:17:36.19\00:17:41.99 Claudie was deployed to the front lines in Korea 00:17:42.02\00:17:45.05 and assigned to the Medic corps 00:17:45.08\00:17:46.80 driving into no man's land to pick up the wounded. 00:17:46.83\00:17:49.52 After receiving his orders, 00:17:49.55\00:17:51.72 he gave the officers, God's orders. 00:17:51.75\00:17:55.34 I explained to them, just before they left me, 00:17:55.37\00:17:59.34 I said, "I want ya'll to send me relief up here, 00:17:59.37\00:18:03.12 2 hours before sun down every Friday evening. 00:18:03.15\00:18:06.51 I'm a Seventh-day Adventist Christian 00:18:06.54\00:18:09.24 and that's the Sabbath." 00:18:09.27\00:18:12.31 Even without a replacement, Claudie prayerfully, 00:18:12.34\00:18:15.10 but deliberately walked off the front lines 00:18:15.13\00:18:17.97 though he could have faced 00:18:18.00\00:18:19.37 a court martial or a firing squad. 00:18:19.40\00:18:21.73 Claudie says that he left God to take care of things. 00:18:21.76\00:18:25.86 The whole time that I was there, 00:18:25.89\00:18:28.11 I never had any problem at all with the Sabbath. 00:18:28.14\00:18:32.07 The Sabbath day really means a lot to me. 00:18:32.10\00:18:36.32 It means more to me than anything else. 00:18:36.35\00:18:39.28 The reason for that is because I love the Lord 00:18:39.31\00:18:42.47 and I want to place Him in the things 00:18:42.50\00:18:45.31 that I do and say every day. 00:18:45.34\00:18:48.12 Pavel Goia was born in communist Romania in 1964. 00:18:48.15\00:18:53.20 Ceausescu's regime didn't take well to Christians 00:18:53.23\00:18:56.77 who put God and His Sabbath above the state. 00:18:56.80\00:19:00.02 But Pavo was raised by godly parents 00:19:00.05\00:19:03.16 who taught him to pray and obey 00:19:03.19\00:19:05.79 a living God who looks after His children. 00:19:05.82\00:19:09.96 I was 17 when I decided to start a business, glass business. 00:19:09.99\00:19:14.27 And it was a co-op where the government 00:19:14.30\00:19:17.59 would get 65% of your net clean profit. 00:19:17.62\00:19:20.90 And you'd get just 35%. And it was going pretty well. 00:19:20.93\00:19:25.31 When the President asked me to work on Sabbath, 00:19:25.34\00:19:27.72 I did explain that I cannot because of my faith. 00:19:27.75\00:19:30.85 And he made fun. He said, "There's no God. 00:19:30.88\00:19:33.50 In this country, we don't believe in God." 00:19:33.53\00:19:36.95 And he said, "I would like to see God." 00:19:36.98\00:19:38.39 Well, I went back and talked to him. 00:19:38.42\00:19:40.98 And I told him, "I cannot come. 00:19:41.01\00:19:42.91 I would be willing to work a lot more." 00:19:42.94\00:19:44.91 He said, "No, you will come." 00:19:44.94\00:19:47.34 That Sabbath I didn't go to work for sure. 00:19:47.37\00:19:49.66 And the boss took full advantage of the situation 00:19:49.69\00:19:52.83 and delivered glass that had been improperly stored outside. 00:19:52.86\00:19:56.52 That glass was virtually welded together 00:19:56.55\00:19:59.60 and the crate was totally rotten. 00:19:59.63\00:20:02.76 So he said, "You have two options. 00:20:02.79\00:20:04.76 You come to work on Sabbath 00:20:04.79\00:20:06.22 and I'll forgive you or if not, you pay for it. 00:20:06.25\00:20:08.66 And if you cannot pay, you go to prison." 00:20:08.69\00:20:10.49 Well, I prayed about it and talked to him again. 00:20:10.52\00:20:13.48 And I said, "Let me bring this glass 00:20:13.51\00:20:15.83 back to the store house, to the warehouse. 00:20:15.86\00:20:19.31 And I will double my work and double the profit you have 00:20:19.34\00:20:22.35 and if you're not happy, we talk then. 00:20:22.38\00:20:24.34 And he smiled and he said, 00:20:24.37\00:20:26.71 "You cannot transport this glass because this is rotten. 00:20:26.74\00:20:30.51 The boxes, the crates are rotten. 00:20:30.54\00:20:33.81 You don't know what you talk about. 00:20:33.84\00:20:35.23 And if you try to transport it, you will break it, 00:20:35.26\00:20:37.13 and then you do have to pay for it." 00:20:37.16\00:20:39.17 And I said, "What do you lose?" 00:20:39.20\00:20:40.78 And he says, "Yeah, somebody needs to pay for this. 00:20:40.81\00:20:43.91 I guess, I don't lose anything. 00:20:43.94\00:20:45.31 If you break it, you pay. 00:20:45.34\00:20:46.71 If you don't break it, you work. 00:20:46.74\00:20:48.11 Yeah, do that." 00:20:48.14\00:20:49.51 So I hired a driver with a truck that had a crane. 00:20:49.54\00:20:51.88 And when he came and saw the boxes, rotten boxes, 00:20:51.91\00:20:56.74 he refused to do it because he was afraid, 00:20:56.77\00:20:58.90 he would be responsible if they break, 00:20:58.93\00:21:00.87 and sure they would break. 00:21:00.90\00:21:02.47 So I had to write a paper and sign that 00:21:02.50\00:21:04.87 I will take full responsibility if something happens, 00:21:04.90\00:21:07.14 so he will not have to pay for it. 00:21:07.17\00:21:08.89 Well, the boxes, each box would be about 18 meters tall, 00:21:08.92\00:21:14.97 22 meters wide or long, 22 to 24 sheets of glass, 00:21:15.00\00:21:20.67 each one 4 millimeters, all together 00:21:20.70\00:21:22.98 an average of more or less 4,000 pounds a box. 00:21:23.01\00:21:28.76 The box would have some wood shoulders here and here 00:21:28.79\00:21:33.98 that you put the cables around and hook it, 00:21:34.01\00:21:36.38 lift it in the air, and then load it in the truck. 00:21:36.41\00:21:40.26 Well, when the driver put the hooks 00:21:40.29\00:21:44.62 around the shoulders and lift it, 00:21:44.65\00:21:47.78 the box, the first one 00:21:47.81\00:21:49.59 when it was high enough when he did the rotation, 00:21:49.62\00:21:52.72 the bottom of the box broke because it was totally rotten, 00:21:52.75\00:21:56.89 the finger could go to the wood. 00:21:56.92\00:21:58.97 And all that glass fell from the box. 00:21:59.00\00:22:03.25 So in that instant, the glass stopped in the air 00:22:03.28\00:22:07.54 and the box was over moving slowly in the wind. 00:22:07.57\00:22:11.66 And there was nothing under the glass, nothing over. 00:22:11.69\00:22:15.09 The driver asked me, "What should we do?" 00:22:15.12\00:22:17.35 I said, "I don't know, just lower the box back." 00:22:17.38\00:22:20.59 So as he was lowering the box, the box was moving. 00:22:20.62\00:22:23.20 He asked me to hold it. 00:22:23.23\00:22:24.60 I caught the bottom of the box, kept it still. 00:22:24.63\00:22:27.59 And as the box was coming down, it got to the glass 00:22:27.62\00:22:30.67 and the glass started to get inside 00:22:30.70\00:22:32.49 until the whole glass got all together inside. 00:22:32.52\00:22:36.95 And he lowered it down to the ground. 00:22:36.98\00:22:39.21 And then he put cables around. 00:22:39.24\00:22:41.33 And I remember the President came to me. 00:22:41.36\00:22:44.17 He was pale. He was afraid. 00:22:44.20\00:22:46.84 And he said, "I want you to go. 00:22:46.87\00:22:50.34 You don't have to pay. You don't have to go to prison. 00:22:50.37\00:22:53.11 You don't have to work on Sabbath. 00:22:53.14\00:22:54.61 I just want you to go away from this place. 00:22:54.64\00:22:56.80 Move, move, and don't curse me or my family. Just go. 00:22:56.83\00:23:01.13 We don't want you close around. 00:23:01.16\00:23:02.96 We just-- please stay away from us." 00:23:02.99\00:23:04.86 Sabbath is a clear command from God. 00:23:04.89\00:23:08.16 And if we choose to obey in faith, 00:23:08.19\00:23:10.11 He can use that for His honor and for His glory. 00:23:10.14\00:23:14.92 In every religion, men revere something, 00:23:14.95\00:23:18.48 shrines, cities, even people. 00:23:18.51\00:23:24.31 They kiss holy land. 00:23:24.34\00:23:26.85 They immerse themselves in holy water. 00:23:26.88\00:23:30.10 Their ears clutch the syllables of holy men. 00:23:30.13\00:23:34.61 Tangibles, touchables, 00:23:34.64\00:23:37.21 holy things that they can see, revere, feel. 00:23:37.24\00:23:42.43 In Genesis, however, the first thing declared holy 00:23:42.46\00:23:45.84 is not a hill, a shrine, or a place, 00:23:45.87\00:23:49.22 but a block of time, the seventh day, 00:23:49.25\00:23:52.51 "Then God blessed the seventh day and sanctified it." 00:23:52.54\00:23:57.95 The word sanctified is translated from 00:23:57.98\00:24:00.74 the "Hebrew as Qadash, which means sanctify, hallow, 00:24:00.77\00:24:06.38 or to set apart for holy use. 00:24:06.41\00:24:10.08 Though creation dealt with the heavens, 00:24:10.11\00:24:12.78 the earth, the birds, the sea, 00:24:12.81\00:24:14.71 and the beasts of the earth, 00:24:14.74\00:24:16.24 all things of space, it was time not space 00:24:16.27\00:24:20.76 that God first pronounced blessed and holy. 00:24:20.79\00:24:24.37 And this action makes sense because besides space, 00:24:24.40\00:24:27.65 time is the dimension in which God's creation, 00:24:27.68\00:24:30.89 the heavens, the earth, the birds, the sea, 00:24:30.92\00:24:33.33 and the beasts of the earth exist. 00:24:33.36\00:24:36.15 Also, if God had made one specific place holy, 00:24:36.18\00:24:40.28 a hill, a spring, a city, 00:24:40.31\00:24:42.02 not all people would have easy access to it. 00:24:42.05\00:24:45.14 They would have to travel to worship there. 00:24:45.17\00:24:48.10 But time comes to us instead of us going to it. 00:24:48.13\00:24:52.74 Once a week, at 1,000 miles per hour, 00:24:52.77\00:24:55.81 the approximate speed at which the earth rotates on its axis, 00:24:55.84\00:24:59.66 the Sabbath circles the globe, 00:24:59.69\00:25:02.45 arriving on one sun down, leaving on the next. 00:25:02.48\00:25:06.16 The seventh day washes over the planet 00:25:06.19\00:25:08.71 each week like a huge cleansing wave. 00:25:08.74\00:25:11.92 We never have to seek it, the day always finds us. 00:25:11.95\00:25:15.93 Meanwhile, holy cities can be burned. 00:25:15.96\00:25:19.26 Holy people can be killed. Holy shrines can be looted. 00:25:19.29\00:25:23.28 But time is beyond fire and knife, 00:25:23.31\00:25:26.63 no man can touch much less destroy it. 00:25:26.66\00:25:29.96 Therefore, by making a special time holy, 00:25:29.99\00:25:33.23 God has made the Sabbath invincible, 00:25:33.26\00:25:36.34 placing it in an element 00:25:36.37\00:25:37.74 that transcends any devices of mankind. 00:25:37.77\00:25:41.31 Armies can sack cities, rulers can ban pilgrimages, 00:25:41.34\00:25:45.99 but no military tank, no swirl of ink 00:25:46.02\00:25:49.43 can keep away the seventh day. 00:25:49.46\00:25:51.98 We can no more stop the Sabbath than we can the sun rise. 00:25:52.01\00:25:56.38 God protected this memorial from the objects of space, 00:25:56.41\00:26:00.34 which are vulnerable to man 00:26:00.37\00:26:02.40 by placing it in time, which is not. 00:26:02.43\00:26:06.06 Finally, men can avoid holy things. 00:26:06.09\00:26:09.27 They can hide from objects, people, places, 00:26:09.30\00:26:11.82 but they cannot flee from time. 00:26:11.85\00:26:15.11 We can ignore it. Be ignorant of it, hate it. 00:26:15.14\00:26:19.04 But the Sabbath always comes and nothing, no one can stop it. 00:26:19.07\00:26:25.33 Skipping over it, no man yet beyond 00:26:25.36\00:26:27.68 the destructive grasp of all, the Sabbath stands 00:26:27.71\00:26:31.16 as the universal yet invincible 00:26:31.19\00:26:33.64 memorial of God's work in making mankind. 00:26:33.67\00:26:37.66 Framed in time, the most basic element of God's creation, 00:26:37.69\00:26:42.13 the Sabbath more than any other biblical symbol, 00:26:42.16\00:26:45.60 points us to the essence of our existence, 00:26:45.63\00:26:48.98 that we are the handy work of God. 00:26:49.01\00:26:53.19 Thus as the prime symbol of our roots, 00:26:53.22\00:26:56.21 the Sabbath tells us also who we are, 00:26:56.24\00:26:59.52 why we are and where we are going, 00:26:59.55\00:27:02.93 all in a mere 24 hours. 00:27:02.96\00:27:06.16 So is Jesus, Lord of the Sabbath or Lord of nothing? 00:27:06.19\00:27:12.89 Is He Lord of your life? 00:27:12.92\00:27:15.59 You can't say, yes, He is the Lord of my life, 00:27:15.62\00:27:18.93 if He's not Lord of your 1/7th in time. 00:27:18.96\00:27:22.79 Will you spend that time with Him? 00:27:22.82\00:27:25.45 He's waiting to spend each Sabbath with you. 00:27:25.48\00:27:30.80
