00:01:32.59\00:01:35.02 Is your life 00:01:35.02\00:01:35.86 history determined 00:01:35.86\00:01:37.33 by the things 00:01:37.33\00:01:38.03 that you've lived through? 00:01:38.03\00:01:40.26 Well, 00:01:40.26\00:01:41.43 no doubt you've heard people 00:01:41.43\00:01:42.86 ask that question. 00:01:42.86\00:01:44.27 The honest truth of it is 00:01:44.27\00:01:47.90 most of us have asked it 00:01:47.90\00:01:49.27 at some point in time. 00:01:49.27\00:01:51.27 As I deal with people 00:01:51.27\00:01:52.51 as a physician 00:01:52.51\00:01:53.38 and as a pastor, 00:01:53.38\00:01:54.28 especially when 00:01:54.28\00:01:54.91 people go through 00:01:54.91\00:01:55.71 difficult times, 00:01:55.71\00:01:57.35 I often hear them 00:01:57.35\00:01:58.45 saying things like, 00:01:58.45\00:01:59.85 Well, 00:01:59.85\00:02:00.15 I wouldn't 00:02:00.28\00:02:00.58 be going through this right now 00:02:00.98\00:02:01.95 if it weren't for 00:02:01.95\00:02:02.72 what happened in my childhood. 00:02:02.72\00:02:04.22 Or well, that's what 00:02:04.22\00:02:06.62 all these problems are 00:02:06.62\00:02:07.69 because of what happened 00:02:07.69\00:02:08.59 on that first job. 00:02:08.59\00:02:10.06 Or all of these things 00:02:10.06\00:02:11.49 that I'm dealing with right now 00:02:11.49\00:02:12.73 is because of that first spouse 00:02:12.73\00:02:15.83 or the second spouse 00:02:15.83\00:02:17.07 or the third spouse 00:02:17.07\00:02:17.87 or whatever it was. 00:02:17.87\00:02:19.60 Are you following 00:02:19.60\00:02:20.17 along with me? 00:02:20.17\00:02:21.77 And so the question becomes, 00:02:21.77\00:02:23.71 are those perceptions correct? 00:02:25.07\00:02:28.08 And 00:02:28.24\00:02:32.91 to some extent. 00:02:32.91\00:02:34.75 But it's also ‘no?om 00:02:34.75\00:02:37.05 other perspectives. 00:02:37.05\00:02:39.02 And rather than going to the 00:02:39.02\00:02:40.89 medical literature 00:02:40.89\00:02:42.26 or the science, 00:02:42.26\00:02:43.12 we want to go 00:02:43.12\00:02:43.79 to the infallible 00:02:43.79\00:02:45.43 Word of God 00:02:45.43\00:02:46.70 to look at 00:02:46.70\00:02:47.66 whether the Bible sheds 00:02:47.66\00:02:49.56 any light 00:02:49.56\00:02:50.20 on this important question. 00:02:50.20\00:02:52.60 Now, some of you 00:02:52.60\00:02:53.44 probably guess 00:02:53.44\00:02:54.60 if we're going 00:02:54.60\00:02:55.47 through the gospel of Mark, 00:02:55.47\00:02:57.14 where is it likely 00:02:57.14\00:02:58.34 that we're going to go? 00:02:58.34\00:03:01.41 That's right, 00:03:01.48\00:03:02.08 the gospel of Mark. 00:03:02.08\00:03:02.94 But we're not going to go there 00:03:02.94\00:03:04.05 immediately. 00:03:04.05\00:03:04.85 We're first going to look at 00:03:04.85\00:03:05.95 one other example 00:03:05.95\00:03:07.48 from another gospel writer 00:03:07.48\00:03:09.78 and this single example 00:03:09.78\00:03:11.39 should be enough, 00:03:11.39\00:03:12.85 I think, to convince you 00:03:12.85\00:03:14.92 that our early life 00:03:14.92\00:03:15.96 history doesn't 00:03:15.96\00:03:18.76 close the door 00:03:18.76\00:03:20.56 on what the rest of our life 00:03:20.56\00:03:22.00 history will be like. 00:03:22.00\00:03:23.13 As we've been going through 00:03:23.13\00:03:23.93 the gospel of Mark. 00:03:23.93\00:03:24.90 chapter one 00:03:26.90\00:03:27.90 opens up with a 00:03:27.90\00:03:29.07 number of powerful stories. 00:03:29.07\00:03:32.07 One of them is the calling 00:03:32.07\00:03:34.48 of four of Jesus?sciples. 00:03:34.48\00:03:36.51 We read 00:03:36.51\00:03:37.15 how Jesus personally called 00:03:37.15\00:03:39.78 Peter and Andrew. 00:03:39.78\00:03:41.12 Personally called 00:03:41.12\00:03:42.28 James and John. 00:03:42.28\00:03:43.72 But if you go through 00:03:43.72\00:03:44.42 all of Mark's gospel, 00:03:44.42\00:03:45.52 you'll find that the, 00:03:45.52\00:03:46.86 well, not every 00:03:46.86\00:03:47.96 one of the disciples 00:03:47.96\00:03:49.46 is mentioned 00:03:49.46\00:03:50.36 as far as is 00:03:50.36\00:03:51.36 his individual call. 00:03:51.36\00:03:54.36 But fortunately, 00:03:55.76\00:03:57.37 we are not just dependent on 00:03:57.37\00:03:59.47 Mark's gospel. 00:03:59.47\00:04:00.60 We have four gospel writers. 00:04:00.60\00:04:02.27 And we gain insight in John 1 00:04:02.27\00:04:05.94 when it comes to 00:04:06.04\00:04:07.31 two other disciples. 00:04:07.31\00:04:09.04 We're going to focus on 00:04:09.04\00:04:10.21 the second of the two. 00:04:10.21\00:04:11.78 First in John 1:45, 00:04:11.78\00:04:14.78 we have mention of Philip. 00:04:14.78\00:04:16.69 But it says that 00:04:16.69\00:04:18.02 Philip found Nathaniel, 00:04:18.02\00:04:20.82 and he told Nathaniel, 00:04:20.82\00:04:22.29 We have found the one Moses 00:04:22.29\00:04:24.59 wrote about in the law 00:04:24.59\00:04:26.16 and about whom the prophets 00:04:26.16\00:04:27.86 also wrote 00:04:27.86\00:04:29.03 Jesus of Nazareth, 00:04:29.03\00:04:31.23 the Son of Joseph. 00:04:31.23\00:04:32.47 And the 00:04:34.07\00:04:34.40 very first words out 00:04:34.60\00:04:35.77 of Nathaniel's mouth 00:04:35.77\00:04:37.74 should stop you in your tracks, 00:04:37.74\00:04:40.14 because the first thing he says 00:04:40.14\00:04:41.71 when he hears 00:04:41.71\00:04:42.98 this testimony about Jesus, 00:04:42.98\00:04:45.45 he says, Nazareth. 00:04:45.45\00:04:47.98 Can anything good 00:04:47.98\00:04:49.95 come out of Nazareth? 00:04:49.95\00:04:51.89 Can anything good 00:04:51.89\00:04:52.85 come from there? 00:04:52.85\00:04:55.02 What is Nathaniel 00:04:55.02\00:04:56.52 saying in so many words? 00:04:56.52\00:04:58.93 He's saying anybody 00:04:58.93\00:05:00.06 that knows 00:05:00.06\00:05:00.46 anything in Jesus?y 00:05:00.63\00:05:03.23 about Nazareth, 00:05:03.23\00:05:04.63 you would expect that 00:05:04.63\00:05:06.20 nothing good, 00:05:06.20\00:05:07.74 that no good 00:05:07.74\00:05:08.80 would come out of Nazareth. 00:05:08.80\00:05:10.27 But here is the issue. 00:05:10.27\00:05:13.27 Who grew up in Nazareth? 00:05:13.31\00:05:16.08 Jesus. 00:05:16.08\00:05:17.51 Was Jesus good? 00:05:17.51\00:05:19.78 The personification 00:05:19.78\00:05:21.45 of goodness. 00:05:21.45\00:05:22.62 And so do 00:05:22.62\00:05:23.05 you see the picture here? 00:05:23.25\00:05:24.92 The challenge is 00:05:24.92\00:05:26.79 it looks like Jesus environment 00:05:26.79\00:05:28.92 in Nazareth 00:05:28.92\00:05:29.92 would have predisposed Him 00:05:29.92\00:05:31.29 to be anything but good. 00:05:31.29\00:05:33.26 But Jesus 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.93 came out of that environment. 00:05:34.93\00:05:37.17 So hopefully you're already 00:05:37.17\00:05:38.53 getting an answer 00:05:38.53\00:05:39.27 to the question. 00:05:39.27\00:05:40.80 But because we're going through 00:05:40.80\00:05:43.00 Mark's gospel, 00:05:43.00\00:05:44.91 we want to look at another 00:05:44.91\00:05:46.01 powerful illustration 00:05:46.01\00:05:47.94 that has a bearing 00:05:47.94\00:05:49.58 on this topic. 00:05:49.58\00:05:51.15 Another compelling 00:05:51.15\00:05:52.81 case history. 00:05:52.81\00:05:54.12 And it comes to us right 00:05:54.12\00:05:55.45 where we left off in our study 00:05:55.45\00:05:57.49 in Mark 4. 00:05:57.49\00:05:59.25 Now, to refresh your memory, 00:05:59.25\00:06:00.72 if I needed to refresh it, 00:06:00.72\00:06:02.59 if you've been with us 00:06:02.59\00:06:03.36 for this series, 00:06:03.36\00:06:03.99 we spent a long time in Mark 4. 00:06:04.06\00:06:07.00 I will tell you, though, 00:06:07.03\00:06:08.50 the evidence suggests 00:06:08.50\00:06:09.56 we did not spend 00:06:09.56\00:06:10.57 as long a time in Mark 00:06:10.57\00:06:11.87 4 as Jesus spent giving Mark 4. 00:06:11.87\00:06:14.40 We don't have all the parables 00:06:14.40\00:06:15.80 that Jesus told and all that 00:06:15.80\00:06:17.51 He explained, because Jesus, 00:06:17.51\00:06:19.04 the sense is in Mark 4 00:06:19.04\00:06:20.68 that Jesus was teaching 00:06:20.68\00:06:21.84 in parables 00:06:21.84\00:06:22.78 all day, 00:06:22.78\00:06:24.11 and it had been 00:06:24.11\00:06:25.11 a very long day. 00:06:25.11\00:06:27.58 When we get down to Mark 4:35, 00:06:27.58\00:06:30.42 it says The evening 00:06:30.42\00:06:32.02 has now come, 00:06:32.02\00:06:33.46 and Jesus says 00:06:33.46\00:06:34.72 to the disciples, 00:06:34.72\00:06:35.96 Let us cross over 00:06:35.96\00:06:37.86 to the other side. 00:06:37.86\00:06:39.83 Now, when they had left 00:06:39.83\00:06:40.63 the multitude there, 00:06:40.63\00:06:41.93 the disciples took Him, 00:06:41.93\00:06:43.23 Jesus, along in the boat 00:06:43.23\00:06:44.97 as He was. 00:06:44.97\00:06:46.57 And other little boats 00:06:46.57\00:06:48.84 were also with Him. 00:06:48.84\00:06:51.24 First, 00:06:51.24\00:06:51.61 I want you to notice 00:06:51.77\00:06:52.54 that they took Jesus as He was. 00:06:52.54\00:06:56.68 We get the sense, 00:06:57.05\00:06:57.95 after a busy day of preaching, 00:06:57.95\00:06:59.78 that Jesus might 00:06:59.78\00:07:00.55 have been tired. 00:07:00.55\00:07:01.08 And I don't know what 00:07:01.08\00:07:01.62 you think about this, 00:07:01.62\00:07:02.62 whether speaking before 00:07:02.62\00:07:04.22 an audience, a large audience. 00:07:04.22\00:07:05.92 By the way, 00:07:05.92\00:07:07.12 if you look at Mark 4, 00:07:07.12\00:07:08.09 I just want you to 00:07:08.09\00:07:09.49 remember remember, 00:07:09.49\00:07:11.83 I just want you to remember 00:07:11.83\00:07:12.79 Mark 4:1. 00:07:12.79\00:07:14.40 Turn there with me, 00:07:14.40\00:07:15.16 if you would, 00:07:15.16\00:07:15.63 just so you catch 00:07:15.63\00:07:17.10 what Jesus was dealing with. 00:07:17.10\00:07:18.83 Mark 4:1, 00:07:19.83\00:07:21.94 Jesus, it 00:07:21.94\00:07:22.77 says, the - , 00:07:22.77\00:07:24.14 the crowds are just 00:07:24.14\00:07:25.17 thronging around Him. 00:07:25.17\00:07:26.94 They are flocking to Jesus. 00:07:26.94\00:07:29.28 Verse 4, no, verse 1 of Mark 4. 00:07:29.28\00:07:34.52 And again, 00:07:34.62\00:07:35.25 Jesus began 00:07:35.25\00:07:35.98 to teach by the sea, 00:07:35.98\00:07:37.09 and a great multitude 00:07:37.09\00:07:38.39 was gathered to Him 00:07:38.39\00:07:39.72 so that He got into a boat 00:07:39.72\00:07:41.49 and sat in it on the sea. 00:07:41.49\00:07:43.36 And the whole multitude 00:07:43.36\00:07:44.79 was on the land, 00:07:44.79\00:07:46.06 facing the sea. 00:07:46.06\00:07:47.50 Are you getting a picture 00:07:47.50\00:07:48.26 of what's going on here? 00:07:48.26\00:07:49.23 There's a such a big crowd. 00:07:49.23\00:07:50.77 We saw this before in Mark, 00:07:50.77\00:07:52.23 that Jesus gets into a boat, 00:07:52.23\00:07:53.80 they pull away from the shore 00:07:53.80\00:07:55.04 and Jesus is teaching. 00:07:55.04\00:07:58.04 Some years ago, 00:07:58.87\00:08:00.34 a pastor told me of how tired 00:08:00.34\00:08:02.94 he got preaching, 00:08:02.94\00:08:04.31 how they 00:08:04.31\00:08:04.61 just took so much out of him. 00:08:05.01\00:08:06.55 And I thought to myself, 00:08:06.55\00:08:07.58 Well, I don't get 00:08:07.58\00:08:08.25 tired preaching. 00:08:08.25\00:08:09.45 But after he 00:08:10.65\00:08:11.25 told me that, I 00:08:11.25\00:08:12.02 started to realize 00:08:12.02\00:08:12.95 I did get 00:08:12.95\00:08:13.92 really tired preaching. 00:08:13.92\00:08:15.12 I don't know 00:08:15.12\00:08:15.49 the power of 00:08:15.49\00:08:16.09 suggestion or what, 00:08:16.09\00:08:17.33 but if you are, 00:08:17.33\00:08:18.99 I don't care 00:08:18.99\00:08:19.49 whether your attitude is 00:08:19.59\00:08:20.70 this is a challenging thing 00:08:20.70\00:08:22.63 to do 00:08:22.63\00:08:22.90 or not, 00:08:22.90\00:08:23.40 for you to speak in public, 00:08:23.57\00:08:25.20 but Jesus had been 00:08:25.20\00:08:26.10 speaking all day. 00:08:26.10\00:08:27.20 That's the sense you get here. 00:08:27.20\00:08:28.80 You say, Well, 00:08:28.80\00:08:29.27 we don't know when He started, 00:08:29.47\00:08:31.04 but the whole sense of it 00:08:31.04\00:08:32.94 is, is Jesus 00:08:32.94\00:08:35.38 is tired and He's in the boat, 00:08:35.38\00:08:38.38 no break. 00:08:38.41\00:08:39.05 He doesn't go ashore 00:08:39.05\00:08:40.08 and get something to eat. 00:08:40.08\00:08:41.58 And He's in that boat 00:08:41.58\00:08:42.75 and they're making 00:08:42.75\00:08:43.52 their way across 00:08:43.52\00:08:45.15 what the Bible calls 00:08:45.15\00:08:46.25 the Sea of Galilee. 00:08:46.25\00:08:47.86 Now, for many years 00:08:47.86\00:08:50.06 I had read about 00:08:50.06\00:08:51.06 the Sea of Galilee, 00:08:51.06\00:08:51.93 but it wasn't until 00:08:51.93\00:08:52.73 relatively recently 00:08:52.73\00:08:53.93 that Sonja and I 00:08:53.93\00:08:54.56 had the privilege of being over 00:08:54.56\00:08:56.23 in that part of the world 00:08:56.23\00:08:57.77 and actually seeing 00:08:57.77\00:08:58.67 the Sea of Galilee. 00:08:58.67\00:09:00.17 The Sea of Galilee 00:09:00.17\00:09:01.24 is really 00:09:01.24\00:09:01.70 not an impressive 00:09:01.70\00:09:02.97 body of water. 00:09:02.97\00:09:04.97 It is only about 13 miles long 00:09:04.97\00:09:07.21 and about eight miles wide. 00:09:07.21\00:09:08.71 There's absolutely 00:09:08.71\00:09:09.48 no problem seeing across it. 00:09:09.48\00:09:11.38 Having grown up in Chicago, 00:09:11.38\00:09:13.18 I found 00:09:13.18\00:09:13.72 it was much more impressive 00:09:13.85\00:09:15.22 to go to the shore 00:09:15.22\00:09:16.12 of Lake Michigan, 00:09:16.12\00:09:17.35 where I could see 00:09:17.35\00:09:18.22 no shore on the other side, 00:09:18.22\00:09:20.89 okay? 00:09:20.89\00:09:21.22 That's a vast body of water. 00:09:21.56\00:09:22.82 Are you following 00:09:22.82\00:09:23.29 along with me? So 00:09:23.29\00:09:25.33 the Sea 00:09:27.46\00:09:27.86 of Galilee, this term, sea. 00:09:28.10\00:09:30.83 I mean, it's kind of strange 00:09:30.90\00:09:33.00 because a lot of people would 00:09:33.00\00:09:34.30 say, well, that's 00:09:34.30\00:09:34.80 clearly a lake. 00:09:34.80\00:09:36.17 And I think maybe even 00:09:36.17\00:09:37.37 in some parts of the world, 00:09:37.37\00:09:38.47 they would call it a pond. 00:09:38.47\00:09:40.84 Having lived in New England 00:09:40.84\00:09:42.18 for a number of years, 00:09:42.18\00:09:43.71 we were surprised 00:09:43.71\00:09:44.71 at how large of bodies of water 00:09:44.71\00:09:46.68 is there. 00:09:46.68\00:09:47.52 They would say, well, 00:09:47.52\00:09:48.25 that's the pond over there. 00:09:48.25\00:09:50.25 That's 00:09:50.25\00:09:52.29 whatever pond. 00:09:52.29\00:09:53.15 We live near a place 00:09:53.15\00:09:54.26 called Bryant Pond 00:09:54.26\00:09:55.66 that wasn't all that massive. 00:09:55.66\00:09:57.16 But the point was 00:09:57.16\00:09:57.99 some ponds were really big. 00:09:57.99\00:10:00.96 Well, other interesting facts 00:10:01.10\00:10:03.13 about the Dead Sea, 00:10:03.13\00:10:05.10 it is the lowest sea 00:10:05.10\00:10:06.63 in the world. 00:10:06.63\00:10:07.07 You say other facts 00:10:07.17\00:10:08.07 about the Dead Sea. 00:10:08.07\00:10:09.00 Well, I'm 00:10:09.00\00:10:09.30 talking about 00:10:09.44\00:10:09.77 the Sea of Galilee. 00:10:09.97\00:10:10.67 Why would I mention 00:10:10.67\00:10:11.34 the Dead Sea? 00:10:11.34\00:10:12.37 The Dead Sea is the lowest sea, 00:10:12.37\00:10:15.41 has the lowest 00:10:15.51\00:10:16.81 elevation in the world. 00:10:16.81\00:10:18.91 It is also a lake. 00:10:18.91\00:10:20.62 That's what 00:10:20.62\00:10:21.08 the geographers tell us. 00:10:21.22\00:10:23.35 If you look at it. 00:10:23.35\00:10:24.62 And so with the Sea of Galilee, 00:10:24.62\00:10:27.09 the second lowest 00:10:27.09\00:10:28.79 lake in the world. 00:10:28.79\00:10:30.16 Why this is significant. 00:10:30.16\00:10:31.63 We were there 00:10:32.59\00:10:33.29 actually staying 00:10:33.29\00:10:34.93 right close 00:10:34.93\00:10:35.56 to the Sea of Galilee. 00:10:35.56\00:10:36.50 We actually could look out 00:10:36.50\00:10:38.10 from the place 00:10:38.10\00:10:38.67 we were staying and look at the 00:10:38.80\00:10:40.47 that body of water. 00:10:40.47\00:10:41.80 And you could see 00:10:41.80\00:10:42.74 we were on the 00:10:42.74\00:10:43.20 western side, near 00:10:43.20\00:10:45.14 where Jesus did 00:10:45.14\00:10:46.11 a lot of His ministry. 00:10:46.11\00:10:47.31 And if you looked over 00:10:47.31\00:10:48.04 at the east, you saw, 00:10:48.04\00:10:49.28 you know, substantial cliffs, 00:10:49.28\00:10:52.81 if you will, substantial rise, 00:10:52.81\00:10:54.98 and that's what you call 00:10:54.98\00:10:56.22 the Golan Heights. 00:10:56.22\00:10:57.25 Many of you have heard 00:10:57.25\00:10:58.02 of that piece of geography, 00:10:58.02\00:11:00.09 rising thousands of feet 00:11:00.09\00:11:02.46 above the Sea of Galilee. 00:11:02.46\00:11:04.43 What is so interesting about 00:11:04.43\00:11:05.86 this is if you have cold winds 00:11:05.86\00:11:07.76 coming from the Golan, 00:11:07.76\00:11:09.90 from the east, 00:11:09.90\00:11:11.17 coming down 00:11:11.17\00:11:12.37 to the Sea of Galilee, 00:11:12.37\00:11:15.17 where the waters are warm, 00:11:15.17\00:11:16.17 or if you've got cold 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.04 air coming in 00:11:17.04\00:11:17.64 or a cold front coming 00:11:17.64\00:11:18.74 in, that can just stir up 00:11:18.74\00:11:20.21 some extremely violent storms 00:11:20.21\00:11:23.41 as that cold 00:11:23.41\00:11:24.48 air meets the warm air. 00:11:24.48\00:11:26.58 And whether that was 00:11:26.58\00:11:27.62 the meteorological occurrence 00:11:27.62\00:11:29.45 that happened 00:11:29.45\00:11:31.05 in Mark 4 or not, 00:11:31.05\00:11:32.55 the account tells us this. 00:11:32.55\00:11:34.69 Mark 4:37, A furious squall, 00:11:34.69\00:11:37.99 other translations 00:11:37.99\00:11:39.53 say a great wind storm, came up 00:11:39.53\00:11:42.50 and the waves 00:11:42.56\00:11:43.37 broke over the boat, 00:11:43.37\00:11:44.73 so that it was nearly swamped. 00:11:44.73\00:11:47.64 You get the picture? 00:11:47.64\00:11:48.67 The boat's about to go under. 00:11:48.67\00:11:50.31 Now, I 00:11:51.44\00:11:51.67 don't care if it's 00:11:51.94\00:11:52.41 only eight miles wide. 00:11:52.47\00:11:54.81 If you're in the middle of that 00:11:54.81\00:11:55.91 lake, you're, what, 00:11:55.91\00:11:57.08 four miles from shore? 00:11:57.08\00:11:58.31 That's an awful long way, 00:11:58.31\00:12:00.42 if your boat capsizes, 00:12:00.42\00:12:02.88 especially in a storm. 00:12:02.88\00:12:05.15 I don't care 00:12:05.15\00:12:05.62 how good a swimmer you are. 00:12:05.82\00:12:06.76 A storm can take anybody down. 00:12:06.76\00:12:09.72 Well, we were there 00:12:11.29\00:12:12.03 at the Sea of Galilee. 00:12:12.03\00:12:14.36 We had 00:12:14.36\00:12:15.10 heard about 00:12:15.10\00:12:16.30 a discovery in 1986. 00:12:16.30\00:12:19.50 There was a drought 00:12:19.97\00:12:21.30 in that part of the world. 00:12:21.30\00:12:23.77 And some fishermen from 00:12:23.77\00:12:26.78 the northwestern part 00:12:26.84\00:12:28.28 of the Sea of Galilee 00:12:28.28\00:12:29.71 found a structure 00:12:29.71\00:12:32.35 in the water submerged, 00:12:32.35\00:12:35.35 barely visible. 00:12:35.38\00:12:36.28 Looked like 00:12:36.28\00:12:37.35 though 00:12:37.35\00:12:37.59 it was the remnants of a ship. 00:12:38.02\00:12:40.06 They called the 00:12:40.06\00:12:40.99 archeologists in, 00:12:40.99\00:12:43.06 and over the course 00:12:43.06\00:12:44.46 of over a decade, 00:12:44.46\00:12:46.26 we were told, these 00:12:46.26\00:12:48.36 archeologists meticulously 00:12:48.36\00:12:51.53 got this 00:12:52.57\00:12:53.97 boat that was dated 00:12:53.97\00:12:56.71 around the time of Jesus 00:12:56.71\00:12:59.11 out of the Sea of Galilee. 00:12:59.11\00:13:01.41 They had to 00:13:01.41\00:13:01.68 put it into wax to float it 00:13:02.08\00:13:04.68 to the current location, 00:13:04.78\00:13:06.51 which is in a museum. 00:13:06.51\00:13:08.08 And if you were to walk 00:13:08.08\00:13:10.75 in that museum, as we did, 00:13:10.75\00:13:12.15 and to measure that boat, 00:13:12.15\00:13:13.96 as we did not, 00:13:13.96\00:13:15.36 we didn't 00:13:15.36\00:13:15.62 bring out a tape measure on it, 00:13:16.06\00:13:17.69 but they told us 00:13:17.69\00:13:18.73 it was 27 feet long 00:13:18.73\00:13:21.56 and seven and a half feet wide. 00:13:21.56\00:13:24.50 This was not a 00:13:24.50\00:13:25.30 substantial craft. 00:13:25.30\00:13:26.57 It was only 4.3 feet deep. 00:13:26.57\00:13:30.14 That was the height 00:13:31.21\00:13:32.51 of the ship. 00:13:32.51\00:13:33.07 Now, maybe 00:13:33.07\00:13:33.98 that height had eroded 00:13:33.98\00:13:35.24 a little bit 00:13:35.24\00:13:35.81 being 00:13:35.81\00:13:37.01 buried for all those 00:13:37.01\00:13:38.81 decades, centuries. 00:13:38.81\00:13:40.98 But this was not a craft 00:13:40.98\00:13:43.59 that you would just say 00:13:43.59\00:13:44.55 was made to handle 00:13:44.55\00:13:46.05 major storms. 00:13:46.05\00:13:48.39 It was interesting, though, 00:13:48.39\00:13:49.79 if you were to 00:13:49.79\00:13:50.19 look at that boat, 00:13:50.29\00:13:51.09 you would see that 00:13:51.09\00:13:51.83 it would comfortably hold 00:13:51.83\00:13:52.89 about 12 to 15 people. 00:13:52.89\00:13:54.50 Isn't that interesting? 00:13:54.50\00:13:55.86 It could be rowed 00:13:55.86\00:13:56.80 or sailed, 00:13:56.80\00:13:58.13 but it was definitely not 00:13:58.13\00:14:00.24 the boat you'd want to be in 00:14:00.24\00:14:01.87 if you knew 00:14:01.87\00:14:02.97 you were going 00:14:02.97\00:14:03.30 to go into a major storm. 00:14:03.61\00:14:06.24 And that is the very vessel 00:14:06.24\00:14:08.28 that Jesus and His disciples 00:14:08.28\00:14:10.25 found themselves in. 00:14:10.25\00:14:11.55 I want you to notice now 00:14:13.95\00:14:14.92 verse 38 of Mark 4, 00:14:14.92\00:14:17.02 because you'll read 00:14:17.02\00:14:18.19 about two different responses. 00:14:18.19\00:14:21.19 It says of Jesus 00:14:21.22\00:14:22.89 that He was in the stern, 00:14:22.89\00:14:24.73 the back of the boat, 00:14:24.73\00:14:25.99 and He was doing what? 00:14:25.99\00:14:27.96 He was sleeping on a cushion. 00:14:27.96\00:14:30.93 On the other hand, 00:14:31.17\00:14:32.53 the disciples finally, 00:14:32.53\00:14:35.77 and I emphasize the word, 00:14:35.77\00:14:37.04 finally, woke Him 00:14:37.04\00:14:40.11 and said to Him, Teacher, 00:14:40.11\00:14:42.18 don't you care if we drown? 00:14:42.18\00:14:44.85 This is not taking liberty 00:14:44.85\00:14:46.21 with the Scripture. 00:14:46.21\00:14:47.25 Because remember, 00:14:47.25\00:14:48.35 as Mark describes it, 00:14:48.35\00:14:49.85 the boat is about swamped. 00:14:49.85\00:14:51.25 It's about to go under. 00:14:51.25\00:14:53.86 Why did they not call 00:14:53.86\00:14:55.26 Jesus sooner? 00:14:55.26\00:14:57.13 We'll talk about that 00:14:57.13\00:14:58.13 in a few minutes. 00:14:58.13\00:14:59.43 But I want you to focus 00:14:59.43\00:15:00.53 on these two 00:15:00.53\00:15:01.10 different responses. First. 00:15:01.16\00:15:02.93 Jesus sleeping, 00:15:02.93\00:15:04.77 the disciples 00:15:04.77\00:15:06.03 fearing for their lives. 00:15:06.03\00:15:08.10 Now, here's 00:15:08.10\00:15:08.47 the interesting question. 00:15:08.74\00:15:12.54 Because Jesus is going to say 00:15:12.54\00:15:17.65 something very interesting. 00:15:17.65\00:15:19.41 You know the story well, 00:15:19.41\00:15:21.35 because as soon as 00:15:22.75\00:15:23.89 they wake Him up, 00:15:23.89\00:15:26.05 Jesus gets up and He speaks 00:15:26.05\00:15:28.62 these words. 00:15:28.62\00:15:29.36 It says, He rebuked the wind 00:15:29.36\00:15:31.13 and He said to the sea, 00:15:31.13\00:15:32.46 Peace, be still. 00:15:32.46\00:15:35.43 And the minute those words 00:15:36.13\00:15:37.53 come out of His mouth, 00:15:37.53\00:15:39.33 the wind ceases 00:15:39.33\00:15:41.27 and there is a great calm. 00:15:41.27\00:15:44.01 Picture that for a minute 00:15:44.01\00:15:46.61 if you're the disciples. 00:15:46.61\00:15:48.98 Now, what I want you to notice 00:15:48.98\00:15:50.28 about the response 00:15:50.28\00:15:51.21 says is that Jesus, 00:15:51.21\00:15:53.25 I would suggest to you, 00:15:53.25\00:15:54.42 was already experiencing 00:15:54.42\00:15:56.55 a great calm 00:15:56.55\00:15:58.52 before He caused a great calm. 00:15:58.52\00:16:01.59 Now, some people have said, 00:16:02.09\00:16:03.09 Oh, well, 00:16:03.09\00:16:03.39 He was probably just so tired. 00:16:03.76\00:16:04.99 He was probably so fatigued. 00:16:04.99\00:16:06.70 That's why 00:16:06.70\00:16:07.56 Jesus was sleeping on the boat. 00:16:07.56\00:16:10.47 We'll get there in a minute. 00:16:10.47\00:16:12.00 But I just want to ask you one 00:16:12.00\00:16:13.30 simple question, first of all, 00:16:13.30\00:16:15.47 and it is so obvious 00:16:15.47\00:16:16.50 you may not be able 00:16:16.50\00:16:17.11 to give me the answer, 00:16:17.11\00:16:18.31 and that is 00:16:18.31\00:16:19.97 how did the 00:16:19.97\00:16:20.58 physical circumstances differ 00:16:20.68\00:16:23.38 between Jesus 00:16:23.38\00:16:24.95 and the 12 disciples? 00:16:24.95\00:16:26.48 How does the 00:16:26.48\00:16:26.88 physical circumstance 00:16:27.05\00:16:28.55 circumstances differ? 00:16:28.55\00:16:29.98 Yeah, some of you 00:16:31.89\00:16:32.35 are saying, well, 00:16:32.35\00:16:33.59 basically they're the same. 00:16:33.59\00:16:34.82 They're in the same boat, 00:16:34.82\00:16:35.62 in the same storm. 00:16:35.62\00:16:36.42 But it is true. 00:16:36.42\00:16:37.03 Jesus was on a cushion 00:16:37.03\00:16:38.46 or a pillow or some kind of. 00:16:38.46\00:16:40.83 So was that 00:16:40.83\00:16:42.00 really making His journey 00:16:42.00\00:16:45.90 all that more comfortable? 00:16:45.90\00:16:48.90 The story actually 00:16:50.07\00:16:51.01 brings us back 00:16:51.01\00:16:51.71 to our original question. 00:16:51.71\00:16:54.14 Are we merely the product 00:16:54.14\00:16:55.81 of our circumstances? 00:16:55.81\00:16:57.81 And I'm not just talking 00:16:57.81\00:16:58.81 about ancient history. 00:16:58.81\00:16:59.58 I'm not just talking about 00:16:59.58\00:17:00.25 what happened in your life 00:17:00.25\00:17:01.42 years ago. 00:17:01.42\00:17:02.32 Maybe that's incorrect 00:17:02.32\00:17:03.25 to call it ancient history. 00:17:03.25\00:17:04.42 Probably none of you 00:17:04.42\00:17:05.49 like to be called ancient. 00:17:05.49\00:17:07.26 I know I don't appreciate it. 00:17:07.26\00:17:08.89 But the point is simply 00:17:08.89\00:17:10.73 we're not just talking 00:17:10.73\00:17:11.59 about things in the far past. 00:17:11.59\00:17:13.96 We're talking about 00:17:13.96\00:17:14.66 this past week. 00:17:14.66\00:17:15.73 If something 00:17:17.10\00:17:17.77 bad happened either 00:17:17.77\00:17:18.67 last week, 00:17:18.67\00:17:19.23 is that going to predestined 00:17:19.33\00:17:21.10 your whole future? 00:17:21.10\00:17:24.11 Long before I ever enrolled 00:17:26.01\00:17:28.04 in the School of Public Health 00:17:28.04\00:17:29.38 at Loma Linda University 00:17:29.38\00:17:31.28 to work on my master's degree 00:17:31.28\00:17:32.88 in public health, 00:17:32.88\00:17:34.25 two researchers 00:17:34.25\00:17:35.92 by the name of Holmes 00:17:35.92\00:17:37.05 and Rahe 00:17:37.05\00:17:38.29 published a very famous study 00:17:38.29\00:17:41.26 way back in 1967. 00:17:41.82\00:17:44.99 Initial study 00:17:46.43\00:17:47.36 The Social Readjustment 00:17:47.36\00:17:49.43 Rating Scale. 00:17:49.43\00:17:52.17 Now, this may not sound 00:17:52.17\00:17:53.57 like an amazing piece 00:17:53.57\00:17:54.94 of medical research to you, 00:17:54.94\00:17:57.94 but I knew it was 00:17:58.04\00:17:59.01 very significant 00:17:59.01\00:18:00.14 because over 20 years later, 00:18:00.14\00:18:01.68 when I was sitting in a class, 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.21 actually studying 00:18:03.21\00:18:04.31 the stress response, 00:18:04.31\00:18:06.98 one of the first people 00:18:06.98\00:18:09.35 that were referenced 00:18:09.35\00:18:10.39 were Holmes and Rahe 00:18:10.39\00:18:12.05 and a very famous study 00:18:12.05\00:18:14.76 it is, this social readjustment 00:18:14.76\00:18:17.76 rating scale. 00:18:17.76\00:18:18.49 You've likely seen 00:18:18.49\00:18:19.79 it, many of you. 00:18:19.79\00:18:20.83 In fact, if you go today 00:18:20.83\00:18:22.83 to the American 00:18:24.20\00:18:25.07 Institute of Stress, 00:18:25.07\00:18:26.87 you will find that 00:18:26.87\00:18:27.64 they still have the Holmes 00:18:27.64\00:18:29.34 Rahe stress 00:18:29.34\00:18:29.97 inventory on their website. 00:18:29.97\00:18:31.34 You can actually take it, 00:18:31.34\00:18:32.57 the whole stress inventory. 00:18:32.57\00:18:34.54 And let me just give you 00:18:34.54\00:18:35.91 an overview of it. 00:18:35.91\00:18:36.95 If this is not ringing 00:18:36.95\00:18:38.35 any bells. 00:18:38.35\00:18:39.31 What these researchers did is 00:18:39.31\00:18:40.95 they got together 00:18:40.95\00:18:41.65 about 400 people 00:18:41.65\00:18:43.62 and they said, 00:18:43.62\00:18:44.42 we want you to rate 00:18:44.42\00:18:45.89 the severity 00:18:45.89\00:18:47.02 of these different things 00:18:47.02\00:18:48.36 that could happen in your life. 00:18:48.36\00:18:49.46 How disruptive 00:18:49.46\00:18:50.59 would this be to your life. 00:18:50.59\00:18:51.73 And they had this whole list 00:18:51.73\00:18:52.89 and these people ranked them 00:18:52.89\00:18:54.83 and they put together a scale 00:18:54.83\00:18:56.43 based on actual people 00:18:56.43\00:18:58.07 saying how disruptive 00:18:58.07\00:18:59.43 certain things were. 00:18:59.43\00:19:00.74 They came up with 00:19:00.74\00:19:01.30 42 different categories. 00:19:01.30\00:19:03.00 They assign them point scores 00:19:03.00\00:19:04.61 based on the responses 00:19:04.61\00:19:06.71 of the subjects. 00:19:06.71\00:19:08.78 Now, I know none of 00:19:08.78\00:19:10.01 you can read this slide, 00:19:10.01\00:19:11.61 so I've enlarged 00:19:11.61\00:19:12.85 the first 12 categories 00:19:12.85\00:19:14.62 for you. 00:19:14.62\00:19:15.68 We're not going to go 00:19:15.68\00:19:16.35 through the whole 00:19:16.35\00:19:17.12 stress survey together, 00:19:17.12\00:19:18.75 all 42 questions, 00:19:18.75\00:19:20.22 so you can find out 00:19:20.22\00:19:21.12 how many points 00:19:21.12\00:19:21.92 you accumulated. 00:19:21.92\00:19:23.12 But in the last year, 00:19:23.12\00:19:25.36 you're asking yourself 00:19:25.36\00:19:26.46 these questions. 00:19:26.46\00:19:27.20 If any of these 00:19:27.20\00:19:27.86 things happened to you 00:19:27.86\00:19:28.66 and I want you to 00:19:28.66\00:19:29.13 notice something. 00:19:29.13\00:19:30.17 This is not just talking 00:19:30.17\00:19:31.27 about bad things. 00:19:31.27\00:19:33.17 For example, 00:19:33.17\00:19:33.90 right now, 00:19:33.90\00:19:34.34 many of you know 00:19:34.34\00:19:35.60 that our daughter is pregnant. 00:19:35.60\00:19:37.74 She and her husband 00:19:37.74\00:19:38.57 are very happy 00:19:38.57\00:19:39.67 that she is pregnant. Okay. 00:19:39.67\00:19:41.18 But you can see number 00:19:41.18\00:19:42.41 12 on the list, 00:19:42.41\00:19:43.78 giving you 40 points 00:19:43.78\00:19:45.98 is pregnancy. 00:19:45.98\00:19:47.05 Some of you may be 00:19:48.35\00:19:49.42 contemplating marriage. 00:19:49.42\00:19:50.95 If you are 00:19:50.95\00:19:51.45 contemplating marriage, 00:19:51.52\00:19:52.75 I would hope 00:19:52.75\00:19:53.62 you are contemplating it 00:19:53.62\00:19:54.76 with very positive mindset. 00:19:54.76\00:19:57.23 Okay. 00:19:57.23\00:19:57.56 If you're not, 00:19:57.63\00:19:58.43 please counsel with me first. 00:19:58.43\00:20:00.00 Okay. 00:20:00.00\00:20:00.73 It's not a good sign 00:20:00.73\00:20:02.00 if you're worried 00:20:02.00\00:20:02.86 going into a marriage. 00:20:02.86\00:20:04.10 But you see there marriage 00:20:04.10\00:20:05.93 number seven, 50 00:20:05.93\00:20:08.00 life change points. Okay. 00:20:08.00\00:20:10.57 So this is more going to cause 00:20:10.57\00:20:12.01 more change, life change 00:20:12.01\00:20:15.01 than even a pregnancy. 00:20:15.38\00:20:17.31 At least that's 00:20:17.31\00:20:17.81 how people rated it. 00:20:17.81\00:20:19.15 You could see there's 00:20:19.15\00:20:19.81 some other good things 00:20:19.81\00:20:20.95 on there, 00:20:20.95\00:20:21.68 like marital 00:20:21.68\00:20:23.08 reconciliation at number nine. 00:20:23.08\00:20:25.42 So if you've been 00:20:25.42\00:20:25.95 having problems with a spouse 00:20:26.12\00:20:27.22 and you get back together. Yes. 00:20:27.22\00:20:28.96 But there's there's challenges 00:20:28.96\00:20:30.19 associated with that. 00:20:30.19\00:20:31.06 But we would say that's good. 00:20:31.06\00:20:32.19 Now, there's some other things 00:20:32.19\00:20:33.19 that we would say 00:20:33.19\00:20:33.66 are clearly not good, 00:20:33.76\00:20:34.93 and they're 00:20:34.93\00:20:36.00 very high on the list. 00:20:36.00\00:20:37.20 You can see number 00:20:37.20\00:20:38.03 one is the death of a spouse. 00:20:38.03\00:20:40.17 Then there is divorce, 00:20:40.17\00:20:41.94 marital separation, 00:20:41.94\00:20:43.47 detention in jail 00:20:43.47\00:20:45.34 or other institution, 00:20:45.34\00:20:46.74 death of what? 00:20:46.74\00:20:48.34 A close family member. 00:20:48.34\00:20:50.08 You can see the list there. 00:20:50.08\00:20:52.18 Now, some of you are already 00:20:52.18\00:20:53.35 tallying up the scores 00:20:53.35\00:20:54.48 just in the top 12. 00:20:54.48\00:20:55.58 And you say, wow, 00:20:55.58\00:20:56.52 I've already got 1500. 00:20:56.52\00:20:58.32 Well, check your math. Okay. 00:20:58.32\00:20:59.95 You can't get 1500 out of those 00:20:59.95\00:21:01.66 first 12. 00:21:01.66\00:21:02.56 I'm quite sure of that. 00:21:02.56\00:21:04.26 But here's the point. 00:21:04.26\00:21:05.59 Here's the point. 00:21:05.59\00:21:06.39 The researchers found 00:21:08.06\00:21:09.56 that when they had people 00:21:09.56\00:21:11.00 tally these scores for a year, 00:21:11.00\00:21:13.30 they could predict 00:21:13.30\00:21:15.10 the likelihood 00:21:15.10\00:21:15.90 of their having a serious 00:21:15.90\00:21:17.81 health problem 00:21:17.81\00:21:18.91 over the next couple of years. 00:21:18.91\00:21:20.64 Let's see what they found. 00:21:20.64\00:21:22.91 If you scored 00:21:22.91\00:21:23.71 300 or more points, 00:21:23.71\00:21:25.78 you had an approximately 80% 00:21:25.78\00:21:28.55 chance of serious health 00:21:28.55\00:21:31.25 impairment over the following 00:21:31.25\00:21:33.19 two years. 00:21:33.19\00:21:34.72 If you had a score between 150 00:21:34.72\00:21:36.69 and 300 00:21:36.69\00:21:37.99 and approximately 50% chance 00:21:37.99\00:21:40.56 of something serious happening 00:21:40.56\00:21:42.80 as far as your physical health. 00:21:42.80\00:21:44.67 And then 00:21:44.67\00:21:45.70 150 points 00:21:45.70\00:21:47.04 or less low susceptibility. 00:21:47.04\00:21:49.67 Okay, less than 30%. 00:21:49.67\00:21:52.47 So you say, well, 00:21:52.47\00:21:53.01 wait a minute, wait a minute. 00:21:53.17\00:21:55.31 You should be 00:21:55.31\00:21:56.21 catching something 00:21:56.21\00:21:57.85 from this data 00:21:57.85\00:21:59.05 if you haven't 00:21:59.05\00:21:59.75 already caught it. 00:21:59.75\00:22:00.98 And that is, 00:22:00.98\00:22:01.58 even if you had the worst score 00:22:01.68\00:22:03.92 on this inventory, 00:22:03.92\00:22:05.52 20% of people 00:22:05.52\00:22:07.32 did perfectly fine 00:22:07.32\00:22:08.66 as far 00:22:08.66\00:22:08.96 as their physical health. 00:22:09.29\00:22:09.86 Do you see that? 00:22:09.86\00:22:11.33 Even that top category? 00:22:11.33\00:22:12.69 Yeah. 80% 00:22:12.69\00:22:13.86 bad health 00:22:15.36\00:22:15.96 issues, but 00:22:15.96\00:22:17.20 20% no problem at all. 00:22:17.20\00:22:20.20 Now, you say 00:22:20.37\00:22:20.74 this is hardly encouraging 00:22:21.00\00:22:22.10 if you've gone through 00:22:22.10\00:22:22.74 a lot of life 00:22:22.74\00:22:23.71 changes in the last year. 00:22:23.71\00:22:26.37 But the whole premise 00:22:26.37\00:22:27.98 of the work of Holmes and Rahe 00:22:27.98\00:22:29.98 is that common 00:22:29.98\00:22:30.95 environmental stressors, 00:22:30.95\00:22:32.71 common things that come at us. 00:22:32.71\00:22:34.18 Typically 00:22:34.18\00:22:35.55 we as people deal 00:22:35.55\00:22:37.15 with the same way. 00:22:37.15\00:22:39.62 This is generally true, 00:22:39.62\00:22:40.86 and we see it in Mark 4, right? 00:22:40.86\00:22:42.56 13 people in a boat. 00:22:42.56\00:22:44.56 Are most of them 00:22:44.56\00:22:45.53 dealing with the stressor 00:22:45.53\00:22:46.70 the same way? 00:22:46.70\00:22:48.13 For sure, right? 00:22:48.13\00:22:50.43 12 of them 00:22:50.43\00:22:51.33 are fearing for their lives. 00:22:51.33\00:22:53.34 But what about one of them? 00:22:53.34\00:22:55.40 What is He doing? 00:22:55.40\00:22:58.11 Sleeping in the boat. 00:22:58.11\00:22:59.94 Sleeping in the boat. 00:22:59.94\00:23:01.88 Here's the message. 00:23:01.88\00:23:03.18 If you haven't 00:23:03.18\00:23:03.55 picked up on it already. 00:23:03.78\00:23:05.01 By God's grace, 00:23:05.01\00:23:06.61 you can face the same storm 00:23:06.61\00:23:09.25 as someone else, 00:23:09.25\00:23:10.99 but you can be at peace, 00:23:10.99\00:23:13.09 even though they 00:23:13.09\00:23:13.72 are overwhelmed. 00:23:13.72\00:23:14.59 You can go through. 00:23:16.02\00:23:17.23 You can't say, Oh, 00:23:17.23\00:23:18.16 because I'm 00:23:18.16\00:23:18.63 going through all this, 00:23:18.73\00:23:19.36 things are going to be terrible 00:23:19.43\00:23:20.46 for me. 00:23:20.46\00:23:21.26 No, by God's grace, 00:23:21.26\00:23:23.67 you can sleep in the storm. 00:23:23.67\00:23:25.47 And if you're not 00:23:25.47\00:23:26.07 sleeping in the storm, 00:23:26.07\00:23:27.60 if you're fearing 00:23:27.60\00:23:28.24 for your life, 00:23:28.24\00:23:29.20 God can comfort you. 00:23:29.20\00:23:31.71 Many of you know, as 00:23:31.71\00:23:32.37 I've been going 00:23:32.37\00:23:32.87 through this series, 00:23:32.87\00:23:33.61 I've been 00:23:33.61\00:23:34.88 listening 00:23:34.88\00:23:35.38 to a lot of other preachers. 00:23:35.54\00:23:36.64 One of the ways 00:23:36.64\00:23:37.11 I listen to other preachers 00:23:37.31\00:23:38.31 is by reading 00:23:38.31\00:23:39.11 their commentaries. 00:23:39.11\00:23:40.15 Now, some people say, Well, Dr. 00:23:40.15\00:23:41.28 DeRose, 00:23:41.28\00:23:41.58 you should just be studying 00:23:41.95\00:23:42.42 the Bible. 00:23:42.42\00:23:43.49 And yes, that is the textbook. 00:23:43.49\00:23:45.52 That is the source book. 00:23:45.52\00:23:46.79 That is the book 00:23:46.79\00:23:47.99 that I keep coming back to. 00:23:47.99\00:23:49.72 But, you know, 00:23:49.72\00:23:50.19 God uses people as well. 00:23:50.33\00:23:52.26 And so the Bible speaks 00:23:52.26\00:23:54.03 of the power of preaching 00:23:54.03\00:23:55.66 and also 00:23:55.66\00:23:56.06 the foolishness of preaching. 00:23:56.36\00:23:58.03 But God uses the spoken word. 00:23:58.03\00:24:00.90 And the spoken word is not 00:24:00.90\00:24:02.00 just what we audibly speak, 00:24:02.00\00:24:03.64 but it's also what's written. 00:24:03.64\00:24:05.11 One of the commentators 00:24:05.11\00:24:06.07 that I was reading from 00:24:06.07\00:24:06.88 recently is Jim Reiher. 00:24:06.88\00:24:08.28 He's an Australian 00:24:08.28\00:24:09.24 Bible scholar, 00:24:09.24\00:24:11.48 and he tells the story 00:24:11.48\00:24:12.91 of how he went through 00:24:12.91\00:24:14.22 a major back surgery 00:24:14.22\00:24:16.42 at the age of 28. 00:24:16.42\00:24:18.05 The day after the surgery, 00:24:19.19\00:24:20.62 he's back home 00:24:20.62\00:24:21.89 and he is in terrible, 00:24:21.89\00:24:23.83 excruciating pain. 00:24:23.83\00:24:26.39 He's rushed back 00:24:26.39\00:24:27.30 to the hospital 00:24:27.30\00:24:28.83 and I don't know 00:24:28.83\00:24:29.36 whether he was drifting 00:24:29.36\00:24:30.33 in and out of consciousness, 00:24:30.33\00:24:31.67 but the medical staff 00:24:31.67\00:24:33.00 thought he was unaware 00:24:33.00\00:24:34.70 of what was going on. 00:24:34.70\00:24:37.31 If you're 00:24:37.31\00:24:37.54 a health professional, 00:24:37.84\00:24:38.44 don't do this. 00:24:38.44\00:24:39.97 Don't stand around 00:24:39.97\00:24:40.88 the bed of the patient 00:24:40.88\00:24:41.74 saying, boy, 00:24:41.74\00:24:42.44 this is really bad. 00:24:42.44\00:24:43.48 What are we going to do? 00:24:43.48\00:24:44.51 They were saying things 00:24:44.51\00:24:45.38 like that. Okay. 00:24:45.38\00:24:46.72 And here's what Jim said. 00:24:46.72\00:24:49.35 I started to panic. 00:24:49.35\00:24:51.62 In my heart 00:24:51.62\00:24:52.85 and in my mind 00:24:52.85\00:24:53.52 I started to get 00:24:53.52\00:24:54.36 really frightened. 00:24:54.36\00:24:56.12 I wondered 00:24:56.12\00:24:56.76 if I would ever walk again. 00:24:56.76\00:24:58.76 Maybe they had botched up 00:24:58.76\00:25:00.10 the surgery, 00:25:00.10\00:25:00.73 cut the wrong area, 00:25:00.73\00:25:02.16 left an instrument in me, 00:25:02.16\00:25:03.60 something. 00:25:03.60\00:25:06.07 I felt a fear that 00:25:06.07\00:25:07.34 I have never felt again, 00:25:07.34\00:25:08.60 since that day 00:25:08.60\00:25:09.30 over 30 years ago. 00:25:09.30\00:25:10.77 But as I was 00:25:10.77\00:25:11.91 quietly panicking in my mind, 00:25:11.91\00:25:14.84 get the point, 00:25:14.84\00:25:15.91 I couldn't 00:25:15.91\00:25:16.58 even flay around and complain 00:25:16.58\00:25:18.31 because the slightest movement 00:25:18.31\00:25:19.85 sent huge pain through me. 00:25:19.85\00:25:21.78 As I lay there still, 00:25:21.78\00:25:23.65 panicking quietly in my head. 00:25:23.65\00:25:26.45 Then the next words he 00:25:28.36\00:25:29.39 says are these. 00:25:29.39\00:25:31.06 God was gracious. 00:25:31.06\00:25:34.03 Why? 00:25:35.40\00:25:36.80 Because he says, God 00:25:36.80\00:25:38.30 flooded my thoughts 00:25:38.30\00:25:39.90 with this story. 00:25:39.90\00:25:41.90 This story. 00:25:41.90\00:25:43.24 The story of Jesus 00:25:43.24\00:25:44.71 stilling the storm. 00:25:44.71\00:25:46.78 As I saw the story 00:25:46.78\00:25:47.88 being acted out on a screen 00:25:47.88\00:25:49.11 in my head, 00:25:49.11\00:25:49.61 I could feel 00:25:49.61\00:25:50.08 a huge reassurance. 00:25:50.15\00:25:51.25 It was flooding over me. 00:25:51.25\00:25:52.51 I didn't hear an audible voice, 00:25:52.51\00:25:54.22 but I heard the words 00:25:54.22\00:25:55.52 some way or another 00:25:55.52\00:25:56.72 as if Jesus was saying to me, 00:25:56.72\00:25:58.62 Do you think 00:25:58.62\00:25:59.32 I'm asleep in your storm? 00:25:59.32\00:26:01.06 Do you think I'm 00:26:01.06\00:26:01.79 not with you right now? 00:26:01.79\00:26:03.36 Do you think 00:26:03.36\00:26:03.89 I'm unaware of this pain 00:26:03.96\00:26:05.63 and this fear? 00:26:05.63\00:26:07.13 I am here, 00:26:07.13\00:26:08.20 right here beside you. 00:26:08.20\00:26:11.17 And Jim says, at that point 00:26:11.23\00:26:13.23 the fear left me. 00:26:13.23\00:26:14.37 A peace 00:26:14.37\00:26:15.14 that passes understanding 00:26:15.14\00:26:16.47 it filled my heart and my mind. 00:26:16.47\00:26:18.87 The pain was still there. 00:26:18.87\00:26:20.74 I needed something else 00:26:20.74\00:26:21.81 for that. 00:26:21.81\00:26:23.35 They gave him an injection, 00:26:23.35\00:26:25.18 but he said the fear had lifted 00:26:25.18\00:26:27.08 and the sequel was 00:26:27.08\00:26:28.72 that after some traction 00:26:28.72\00:26:30.42 bed rest, 00:26:30.42\00:26:31.29 it all came good 00:26:31.29\00:26:32.89 and has been good 00:26:32.89\00:26:33.69 for the last 30 years. 00:26:33.69\00:26:35.59 Now not all the stories 00:26:35.59\00:26:36.89 end happily 00:26:36.89\00:26:37.89 as far 00:26:37.89\00:26:38.19 as the physical consequences. 00:26:38.59\00:26:40.00 But I want to 00:26:40.00\00:26:40.46 give you something 00:26:40.46\00:26:41.20 that you can take to the bank. 00:26:41.20\00:26:42.63 If you bring your cares, 00:26:42.63\00:26:44.43 your anxieties, 00:26:44.43\00:26:45.43 your fears to Jesus, 00:26:45.43\00:26:47.20 you can trust 00:26:47.20\00:26:48.47 that He will give 00:26:48.47\00:26:49.17 you His peace. 00:26:49.17\00:26:50.14 Jesus is indeed our 00:26:54.48\00:26:56.24 all powerful Savior. 00:26:56.24\00:26:58.05 And I know He's 00:26:58.05\00:26:58.68 longing for His power to work 00:26:58.75\00:27:00.32 even more fully in your life. 00:27:00.32\00:27:02.78 To help you in that journey, 00:27:02.78\00:27:04.95 we want to encourage you 00:27:04.95\00:27:06.45 to engage 00:27:06.45\00:27:07.06 with the Scriptures 00:27:07.06\00:27:08.26 and the concepts that we shared 00:27:08.26\00:27:09.89 in this presentation. 00:27:09.89\00:27:11.53 You can take advantage 00:27:11.53\00:27:12.66 of our free handouts 00:27:12.66\00:27:13.80 that go along with each episode 00:27:13.80\00:27:15.40 simply by visiting us 00:27:15.40\00:27:16.97 at TimelessHealingInsights.org 00:27:16.97\00:27:19.23 On that very same website, 00:27:19.23\00:27:21.97 you'll find all kinds 00:27:21.97\00:27:22.80 of free health 00:27:22.80\00:27:23.54 resources as well. 00:27:23.54\00:27:25.24 Drop by 00:27:25.24\00:27:26.04 TimelessHealingInsights.org. 00:27:26.04\00:27:29.48 Let me pray for you 00:27:29.58\00:27:30.45 before we say goodbye today. 00:27:30.45\00:27:32.95 Father in Heaven, 00:27:32.95\00:27:34.15 we thank You for the power 00:27:34.15\00:27:35.45 that is in the life of Jesus 00:27:35.45\00:27:36.99 and in His Word. 00:27:36.99\00:27:38.69 We pray that that Word would 00:27:38.69\00:27:40.86 really fully express itself 00:27:40.86\00:27:42.79 in our lives, 00:27:42.79\00:27:43.83 that people would see 00:27:43.83\00:27:44.76 Jesus in us, 00:27:44.76\00:27:46.16 that we would be strengthened 00:27:46.16\00:27:47.73 by the power of Your Word. 00:27:47.73\00:27:50.03 Thank you that we can trust You 00:27:50.03\00:27:51.47 to work that work in us, 00:27:51.47\00:27:53.97 for we ask it in 00:27:53.97\00:27:54.77 Jesus name, Amen. 00:27:54.77\00:27:56.64
