Luke 21. 00:03:21.33\00:03:24.97 Remember, 00:03:24.97\00:03:25.73 He counseled about things 00:03:25.73\00:03:27.24 that sound like 00:03:27.24\00:03:27.87 they're talking about alcohol. 00:03:27.87\00:03:30.41 Quite explicitly they are. 00:03:30.41\00:03:32.34 But He also warned 00:03:32.34\00:03:33.71 about the cares of this life. 00:03:33.71\00:03:35.98 There's a concept 00:03:35.98\00:03:36.91 that we don't talk about 00:03:36.91\00:03:37.98 too much these days. 00:03:37.98\00:03:39.45 It's the concept of temperance. 00:03:39.45\00:03:41.82 Sometimes people associate 00:03:41.82\00:03:43.45 that word with alcohol. 00:03:43.45\00:03:45.29 There was this popular Women's 00:03:45.29\00:03:47.72 Christian Temperance 00:03:47.72\00:03:48.96 Union years ago. 00:03:48.96\00:03:50.09 It still does exist, I'm told, 00:03:50.09\00:03:51.66 but in a much smaller degree 00:03:51.66\00:03:53.76 than many years ago 00:03:53.76\00:03:55.40 in our country. 00:03:55.40\00:03:56.93 But this concept of temperance, 00:03:56.93\00:03:58.80 I want you to think about it 00:03:58.80\00:04:00.44 and we'll define it 00:04:00.44\00:04:01.30 in a minute. 00:04:01.30\00:04:01.77 But here it is 00:04:01.77\00:04:03.17 as Paul articulates it 00:04:03.17\00:04:04.94 in 1 Corinthians 9, he says, 00:04:04.94\00:04:07.74 Do you not know that 00:04:07.74\00:04:08.94 those who run in a race 00:04:08.94\00:04:10.75 all run, 00:04:10.75\00:04:11.75 but one receives the prize? 00:04:11.75\00:04:13.25 Run in such a way 00:04:13.25\00:04:15.35 that you may obtain 00:04:15.35\00:04:16.69 it, temperate in all things. 00:04:16.69\00:04:20.56 He then says, 00:04:21.29\00:04:23.22 I discipline my body 00:04:23.22\00:04:25.69 and bring it 00:04:25.69\00:04:26.63 into subjection, lest, 00:04:26.63\00:04:28.80 when I have preached to others, 00:04:28.80\00:04:31.30 I myself 00:04:31.30\00:04:32.57 should become disqualified. 00:04:32.57\00:04:34.97 So Paul's using this athletic 00:04:34.97\00:04:37.97 parallel. 00:04:38.11\00:04:38.84 He is comparing life 00:04:39.91\00:04:41.28 to running a race, 00:04:41.28\00:04:43.01 but he's saying 00:04:43.01\00:04:43.58 if you want to be successful 00:04:43.68\00:04:45.18 in athletics, 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.68 I know 00:04:46.68\00:04:46.98 I've got some athletes here. 00:04:47.35\00:04:48.45 Can you just do anything 00:04:48.45\00:04:49.35 you want? 00:04:49.35\00:04:49.68 Just hey, it's just basically 00:04:50.05\00:04:50.85 you just show up at the event. 00:04:50.85\00:04:52.25 Is that how it works? 00:04:52.25\00:04:54.72 No, we all know 00:04:54.72\00:04:55.66 better than that. 00:04:55.66\00:04:56.12 Even if you're not an 00:04:56.22\00:04:56.86 athlete, right? 00:04:56.86\00:04:58.16 You know, 00:04:58.16\00:04:58.56 there's a lot of training, 00:04:58.79\00:04:59.79 a lot of discipline. 00:04:59.79\00:05:00.76 This is what Paul is saying 00:05:00.76\00:05:02.30 and he's saying he is 00:05:02.30\00:05:03.33 temperate in all things. 00:05:03.33\00:05:04.93 What is he referring to? 00:05:04.93\00:05:06.00 What is this 00:05:06.00\00:05:06.43 concept of temperance? 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.10 Temperance really 00:05:08.10\00:05:08.80 has two aspects 00:05:08.80\00:05:09.80 rightly understood. 00:05:09.80\00:05:11.17 First 00:05:11.17\00:05:12.14 is using things 00:05:12.14\00:05:13.31 that are good in moderation. 00:05:13.31\00:05:16.08 So if you're a runner, 00:05:16.08\00:05:18.98 is it important to run? 00:05:18.98\00:05:20.62 Do you have to train 00:05:20.62\00:05:21.45 as part of your training, 00:05:21.45\00:05:22.38 involve running? 00:05:22.38\00:05:24.09 Yes, of course, right? 00:05:24.09\00:05:25.62 Can you run too much? 00:05:25.62\00:05:28.52 Can you overtrain? 00:05:28.52\00:05:30.33 Of course, right? 00:05:30.33\00:05:31.86 So even something that's good 00:05:31.86\00:05:34.00 can be done in excess. 00:05:34.00\00:05:35.80 But then 00:05:35.80\00:05:36.93 the other part of temperance 00:05:36.93\00:05:39.00 is total avoidance of things 00:05:39.00\00:05:41.07 which are harmful. 00:05:41.07\00:05:42.27 We've been talking about 00:05:42.27\00:05:43.17 a few of those things already. 00:05:43.17\00:05:44.87 But we're talking 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.71 from our perspective 00:05:46.71\00:05:48.01 of stress management. 00:05:48.01\00:05:49.11 We're still talking about 00:05:49.11\00:05:50.15 some of these general things 00:05:50.15\00:05:51.75 that can make you 00:05:51.75\00:05:52.38 more resilient, 00:05:52.38\00:05:53.18 make stress 00:05:53.18\00:05:53.98 less likely to affect you, 00:05:53.98\00:05:55.95 make the stressors 00:05:55.95\00:05:57.09 the things that come at 00:05:57.09\00:05:58.19 you less likely 00:05:58.19\00:05:59.72 to cause damage. 00:05:59.72\00:06:02.09 So let me give 00:06:02.09\00:06:03.46 you another example, 00:06:03.46\00:06:04.43 and that is caffeine. 00:06:05.43\00:06:07.76 I have to talk about it 00:06:07.76\00:06:08.76 because we're 00:06:08.76\00:06:09.06 talking about stress. 00:06:09.33\00:06:11.17 Do you know how caffeine works? 00:06:11.17\00:06:12.97 One of the ways 00:06:12.97\00:06:13.54 that biochemically 00:06:13.54\00:06:15.27 caffeine works. 00:06:15.27\00:06:16.71 It works by blocking 00:06:16.71\00:06:18.74 something called 00:06:18.74\00:06:19.47 adenosine receptors. 00:06:19.47\00:06:21.68 And that might not mean much 00:06:21.68\00:06:23.35 to many of you. 00:06:23.35\00:06:24.51 But adenosine is involved 00:06:24.51\00:06:26.31 with all kinds 00:06:26.31\00:06:26.92 of good things in your body. 00:06:26.98\00:06:29.38 And when you block 00:06:29.38\00:06:30.32 adenosine receptors, 00:06:30.32\00:06:32.82 in addition 00:06:32.82\00:06:33.46 to making your blood 00:06:33.46\00:06:35.22 more likely to sludge 00:06:35.22\00:06:36.59 and not flowing smoothly, 00:06:36.59\00:06:38.09 you also ramp up 00:06:38.09\00:06:40.23 stress hormones. 00:06:40.23\00:06:42.53 Are you getting this? 00:06:42.53\00:06:44.70 So if you're wondering 00:06:44.70\00:06:45.60 why you're feeling anxious, 00:06:45.60\00:06:47.70 it may not be any further away 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.94 than what? The coffeepot. 00:06:49.94\00:06:52.84 That's exactly right. 00:06:52.84\00:06:54.01 It really does. 00:06:54.01\00:06:54.94 This is how it works 00:06:54.94\00:06:55.78 physiologically. 00:06:55.78\00:06:56.98 And that's 00:06:56.98\00:06:57.45 why people use it to wake up, 00:06:57.68\00:06:59.88 because it raises 00:06:59.88\00:07:00.92 their stress hormones. 00:07:00.92\00:07:02.45 By the way, there's other ways 00:07:04.02\00:07:05.02 to raise your stress hormones 00:07:05.02\00:07:06.79 other than with caffeine. 00:07:06.79\00:07:09.32 So here's what 00:07:09.32\00:07:10.29 I hope you've been hearing. 00:07:10.29\00:07:12.06 The key message 00:07:12.06\00:07:13.03 from these general 00:07:13.03\00:07:14.00 passive strategies 00:07:14.00\00:07:16.00 as they relate to stress 00:07:16.00\00:07:17.33 is invest in your own health. 00:07:17.33\00:07:18.97 You're of value to God. 00:07:18.97\00:07:20.77 He's bought you with a price. 00:07:20.77\00:07:22.20 He's created you. 00:07:22.20\00:07:23.71 That should give 00:07:23.71\00:07:24.81 you resilience, 00:07:24.81\00:07:25.67 but also care 00:07:25.67\00:07:27.74 for your own health. 00:07:27.74\00:07:29.44 Invest in your own health. 00:07:29.44\00:07:31.21 Well, 00:07:31.21\00:07:32.41 now we want to move on 00:07:32.41\00:07:33.45 to talk 00:07:33.45\00:07:33.88 about this 00:07:33.88\00:07:34.78 couple of other areas 00:07:34.78\00:07:36.35 of stress management. 00:07:36.35\00:07:37.69 And now we want to look 00:07:37.69\00:07:38.45 at some general 00:07:38.45\00:07:39.25 active strategies. 00:07:39.25\00:07:40.49 What can you do 00:07:40.49\00:07:41.79 when you're 00:07:41.79\00:07:42.12 experiencing stress? 00:07:42.32\00:07:43.59 So we've been talking 00:07:43.59\00:07:44.26 about strengthening 00:07:44.26\00:07:45.33 your resolve, 00:07:45.33\00:07:45.86 being more resilient. 00:07:45.86\00:07:46.96 There are many 00:07:46.96\00:07:47.76 useful strategies. 00:07:47.76\00:07:48.80 We just have time 00:07:48.80\00:07:49.53 to touch on a few of them 00:07:49.53\00:07:51.27 today. 00:07:51.27\00:07:52.33 The first one 00:07:52.33\00:07:53.07 I want to give you 00:07:53.07\00:07:53.84 is to reframe or to reassess 00:07:53.84\00:07:57.91 the stressors 00:07:58.54\00:07:59.37 that you deal with. 00:07:59.37\00:08:00.31 Okay, 00:08:00.31\00:08:00.98 so we're talking about 00:08:00.98\00:08:02.14 reframing or reassessing. 00:08:02.14\00:08:04.75 That's putting your stressors 00:08:04.75\00:08:06.21 in a different 00:08:06.21\00:08:07.02 context mentally. 00:08:07.02\00:08:08.95 So instead of focusing 00:08:08.95\00:08:10.32 on the stress, 00:08:10.32\00:08:12.02 you're going to focus on 00:08:12.02\00:08:13.05 positive aspects 00:08:13.05\00:08:14.76 to the things 00:08:14.76\00:08:15.36 that seem to be negative. 00:08:15.36\00:08:17.16 You say, Well, 00:08:17.16\00:08:17.56 this sounds kind of weird. 00:08:17.79\00:08:18.79 Well, hang in with 00:08:18.79\00:08:19.49 me for a minute. 00:08:19.49\00:08:20.20 As I was 00:08:21.40\00:08:22.10 preparing to 00:08:22.10\00:08:23.47 give you this material, 00:08:23.47\00:08:25.23 I was looking 00:08:25.23\00:08:25.80 at some of the 00:08:25.80\00:08:26.20 medical literature 00:08:26.30\00:08:27.14 about this concept of reframing 00:08:27.14\00:08:29.64 or reassessing, 00:08:29.64\00:08:31.64 and I ran across an article 00:08:31.64\00:08:33.24 that was written for 00:08:33.24\00:08:34.48 health care providers. 00:08:34.48\00:08:36.24 Here's the title. 00:08:36.24\00:08:37.55 Reducing Frustration 00:08:37.55\00:08:39.85 and Increasing 00:08:39.85\00:08:40.98 Fulfillment Reframing 00:08:40.98\00:08:44.02 and the editors of this 00:08:44.09\00:08:46.12 family practice journal, 00:08:46.12\00:08:47.76 they said to better handle 00:08:47.76\00:08:49.12 challenging patients 00:08:49.12\00:08:50.53 or situations, 00:08:50.53\00:08:52.06 try modifying the way you view 00:08:52.06\00:08:55.66 them. 00:08:55.66\00:08:56.50 Now, this is not 00:08:56.50\00:08:57.17 just of relevance 00:08:57.17\00:08:58.23 to those of you 00:08:58.23\00:08:58.87 that are health care providers. 00:08:58.93\00:09:00.60 And by the way, 00:09:00.60\00:09:01.17 we thank you 00:09:01.17\00:09:02.10 for the many of you 00:09:02.10\00:09:02.87 that that serve 00:09:02.87\00:09:03.91 our communities in that way. 00:09:03.91\00:09:05.71 But this is for all of us. 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.24 We can change 00:09:07.24\00:09:08.14 how we look at the things 00:09:08.14\00:09:09.84 that come our way. 00:09:09.84\00:09:10.45 In fact, 00:09:10.45\00:09:10.85 a lot of what the Bible 00:09:11.01\00:09:11.95 has to say about 00:09:11.95\00:09:12.61 stress is focused on reframing. 00:09:12.61\00:09:15.72 Let me give you a definition 00:09:15.72\00:09:16.89 here from that medical journal. 00:09:16.89\00:09:18.55 Reframing involves 00:09:18.55\00:09:20.09 modifying your thoughts 00:09:20.09\00:09:21.96 about a challenging person 00:09:21.96\00:09:24.23 or a difficult situation, 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.36 and thus reducing frustration 00:09:26.36\00:09:29.03 and increasing empathy. 00:09:29.03\00:09:32.03 So let's take a look 00:09:32.33\00:09:33.94 at some Bible verses that deal 00:09:33.94\00:09:36.24 with this very topic 00:09:36.24\00:09:37.37 of reframing. 00:09:37.37\00:09:38.47 Here's the first one 00:09:38.47\00:09:39.34 from James 1. 00:09:39.34\00:09:41.21 James 1, beginning 00:09:41.21\00:09:42.48 with verse 2. 00:09:42.48\00:09:43.41 He begins with these words, 00:09:43.41\00:09:45.01 Count it all joy. Count it. 00:09:45.01\00:09:47.45 What is another way we could 00:09:47.45\00:09:49.55 translate that? 00:09:49.55\00:09:50.55 Reckon it, 00:09:52.35\00:09:54.02 regard it, 00:09:54.02\00:09:56.99 reappraise it. 00:09:56.99\00:09:59.19 Are you catching this reframe? 00:09:59.19\00:10:02.06 In other words, 00:10:02.06\00:10:03.53 listen to the verse. 00:10:03.53\00:10:05.07 Count it all joy, 00:10:05.07\00:10:06.43 my brothers, 00:10:06.43\00:10:07.37 when you meet 00:10:07.37\00:10:08.34 trials of various kinds. 00:10:08.34\00:10:10.57 When you meet trials, stresses, 00:10:10.57\00:10:12.47 we could say, of various kinds, 00:10:12.47\00:10:13.98 what is your first temptation? 00:10:13.98\00:10:15.74 Is it to say, 00:10:15.74\00:10:16.41 Oh, this is wonderful? 00:10:16.41\00:10:18.98 No, it's how do I avoid this? 00:10:18.98\00:10:20.45 Right. 00:10:20.45\00:10:20.98 So what James is saying 00:10:20.98\00:10:23.18 here is reckon 00:10:23.18\00:10:24.69 these things, 00:10:24.69\00:10:25.25 reframe them as being what? 00:10:25.35\00:10:28.52 Joyful, joy inducing, 00:10:29.52\00:10:31.76 count it all joy 00:10:31.76\00:10:33.16 when you go through 00:10:33.16\00:10:33.80 all these various trials. Why? 00:10:33.80\00:10:35.60 For know 00:10:35.60\00:10:36.43 that the testing 00:10:36.43\00:10:37.53 of your faith produces 00:10:37.53\00:10:39.27 steadfastness, patience. 00:10:39.27\00:10:41.14 And let steadfastness 00:10:41.14\00:10:42.97 or patience 00:10:42.97\00:10:43.97 have its full effect, 00:10:43.97\00:10:45.04 that you may be perfect 00:10:45.04\00:10:46.21 and complete, 00:10:46.21\00:10:47.11 lacking in nothing. 00:10:47.11\00:10:48.74 It's as if James is saying 00:10:48.74\00:10:50.05 one of the main barriers 00:10:50.05\00:10:51.25 in our Christian life is we're 00:10:51.25\00:10:52.31 just not patient enough. 00:10:52.31\00:10:53.48 How many of you think 00:10:54.58\00:10:56.15 this is 00:10:56.15\00:10:56.52 a problem in the world today? 00:14:22.89\00:14:23.66 Take My yoke upon 00:14:25.19\00:14:26.46 you, learn of Me, 00:14:26.46\00:14:29.16 gentle and lowly in heart, 00:14:29.16\00:14:30.43 and you'll find 00:14:30.43\00:14:31.97 rest for your souls. 00:14:31.97\00:14:33.37 My yoke is easy 00:14:33.37\00:14:35.07 and My burden is light. 00:14:35.07\00:14:38.04 But the Bible doesn't 00:14:38.04\00:14:38.94 stop there. 00:14:38.94\00:14:39.44 Like I said, many, many verses. 00:14:39.64\00:14:41.51 But let me give you one more. 00:14:41.51\00:14:44.05 This is a peace prescription 00:14:44.05\00:14:46.45 from the Apostle Paul. 00:14:46.45\00:14:48.75 Philippians is written by Paul 00:14:48.75\00:14:50.85 while he's in prison. 00:14:50.85\00:14:53.59 A very stressful place to be. 00:14:53.59\00:14:56.59 He says, Don't be anxious 00:14:57.63\00:15:00.10 about anything. 00:15:00.10\00:15:01.13 We could say, 00:15:01.13\00:15:01.70 Don't be worried, 00:15:01.70\00:15:02.73 don't be overstressed 00:15:02.73\00:15:04.37 by anything. 00:15:04.37\00:15:05.47 Don't get stressed out 00:15:05.47\00:15:06.77 about anything but to do what? 00:15:06.77\00:15:08.64 In every thing 00:15:08.64\00:15:10.61 and every situation 00:15:10.61\00:15:12.27 by prayer and petition 00:15:12.27\00:15:14.71 with thanksgiving, 00:15:14.71\00:15:16.81 present your requests to God. 00:15:16.81\00:15:18.51 And the peace of God, 00:15:18.51\00:15:20.32 which transcends 00:15:20.32\00:15:21.32 all understanding, 00:15:21.32\00:15:22.85 will guard your hearts 00:15:22.85\00:15:23.79 and your minds in Christ Jesus. 00:15:23.79\00:15:25.42 So you're catching this 00:15:25.42\00:15:26.39 this other theme. 00:15:26.39\00:15:27.39 We're giving it over to God. 00:15:27.39\00:15:28.89 We're giving our problems 00:15:28.89\00:15:29.79 to God, 00:15:29.79\00:15:30.06 we say, Lord, I'm 00:15:30.29\00:15:30.56 going to trust You with these. 00:15:30.96\00:15:32.43 And what are we doing? 00:15:32.43\00:15:33.53 We're thanking God. 00:15:33.53\00:15:35.03 We're rejoicing. 00:15:35.03\00:15:37.07 So you can literally, 00:15:37.07\00:15:39.40 in your mind, 00:15:39.40\00:15:40.27 give your burdens 00:15:40.27\00:15:41.27 over to Jesus. 00:15:41.27\00:15:42.07 Psalm 55 is an amazing Psalm 00:15:42.07\00:15:44.24 that speaks about this. 00:15:44.24\00:15:45.57 Let's just look at it together. 00:15:45.57\00:15:46.98 Psalm 55, a psalm of David. 00:15:46.98\00:15:49.08 He says, 00:15:49.08\00:15:49.61 Cast your burden on the Lord, 00:15:49.78\00:15:52.15 and He will sustain you. 00:15:52.15\00:15:54.08 What do you think? 00:15:54.08\00:15:55.35 Can you cast your burdens on 00:15:55.35\00:15:56.58 the Lord? 00:15:56.58\00:15:56.99 Is He big enough to 00:15:57.12\00:15:58.05 handle your burdens? 00:15:58.05\00:15:59.65 He is. 00:15:59.65\00:16:00.32 Cast your burdens on the Lord 00:16:00.42\00:16:01.86 He?sustain 00:16:01.86\00:16:03.22 you; He'll never suffer 00:16:03.22\00:16:04.79 the righteous to be moved, 00:16:04.79\00:16:06.13 never permit them to be moved. 00:16:06.13\00:16:07.86 You say, 00:16:07.86\00:16:08.16 Wait a minute, 00:16:08.26\00:16:08.53 but I'm not very righteous. 00:16:08.93\00:16:09.96 When we trust in Jesus 00:16:09.96\00:16:12.13 and we come to Jesus, 00:16:12.13\00:16:13.50 Jesus gives us 00:16:13.50\00:16:14.50 His righteousness. 00:16:14.50\00:16:15.94 He forgives you. 00:16:17.34\00:16:19.37 So He's 00:16:19.37\00:16:19.84 never going to allow you 00:16:19.97\00:16:22.74 to be lost 00:16:22.74\00:16:24.08 if you're trusting in Him. 00:16:24.08\00:16:27.52 Now, what's 00:16:27.58\00:16:28.05 crazy about Psalm 55, 00:16:28.15\00:16:30.05 we're speaking 00:16:30.05\00:16:30.45 about general things. 00:16:30.62\00:16:31.42 A lot of people say, well, 00:16:31.42\00:16:32.25 you know, general 00:16:32.25\00:16:33.02 can't be very powerful. 00:16:33.02\00:16:34.62 You have to be powerful, 00:16:34.62\00:16:35.56 it's got to be specific. 00:16:35.56\00:16:38.43 No, no, no. 00:16:38.43\00:16:39.16 This is very powerful stuff. 00:16:39.16\00:16:40.86 Psalm 55, I want 00:16:40.86\00:16:41.90 you see the context. 00:16:41.90\00:16:43.90 What is David talking about? 00:16:43.90\00:16:45.60 When is he saying 00:16:45.60\00:16:46.40 to cast your burdens 00:16:46.40\00:16:47.40 on the Lord? 00:16:47.40\00:16:48.00 I mean, it's like 00:16:48.00\00:16:48.44 some of the worst stuff 00:16:48.57\00:16:49.40 we deal with in life. 00:16:49.40\00:16:50.21 Look at this, verse 20. 00:16:50.21\00:16:53.21 My companion 00:16:53.38\00:16:55.34 stretched out his hand 00:16:55.34\00:16:57.08 against his friends; 00:16:57.08\00:16:58.91 he violated his covenant. 00:16:58.91\00:17:01.98 It's not an enemy 00:17:02.45\00:17:03.82 who taunts me, 00:17:03.82\00:17:05.15 he said In verses 00:17:05.15\00:17:06.12 12 through 14, 00:17:06.12\00:17:07.72 it's you, my companion, 00:17:07.72\00:17:10.19 my familiar friend. 00:17:10.19\00:17:11.93 We used to take sweet 00:17:11.93\00:17:13.33 counsel together. 00:17:13.33\00:17:14.73 What's going on here? 00:17:14.73\00:17:16.20 He's talking about betrayal. 00:17:16.20\00:17:18.17 He's talking about when things 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.37 the very closest people to you 00:17:19.37\00:17:22.20 betray you. 00:17:22.20\00:17:23.71 And how do you feel? 00:17:23.71\00:17:24.81 You feel like, Well, 00:17:24.81\00:17:25.47 what's the point? 00:17:25.47\00:17:26.24 How can I go on? 00:17:26.24\00:17:27.58 And what David is saying, 00:17:27.58\00:17:28.74 cast your burden on the Lord, 00:17:28.74\00:17:30.85 that he's telling you 00:17:30.85\00:17:32.35 just what he's dealing with. 00:17:32.35\00:17:33.82 Here's how bad it was for David 00:17:36.58\00:17:39.05 in verses 4 00:17:39.05\00:17:39.92 and 5, he said, 00:17:39.92\00:17:40.69 My heart is severely pained 00:17:40.69\00:17:43.12 within me, 00:17:43.12\00:17:44.09 the terrors of death 00:17:44.09\00:17:45.59 have fallen upon me. 00:17:45.59\00:17:47.76 Fearfulness and trembling 00:17:47.76\00:17:49.26 have come upon me, 00:17:49.26\00:17:50.07 and horror has overwhelmed me. 00:17:50.07\00:17:51.80 That's the context 00:17:51.80\00:17:52.87 where he's encouraging himself 00:17:52.87\00:17:54.77 to do what? 00:17:54.77\00:17:55.97 Cast his burdens on the Lord. 00:17:55.97\00:17:58.44 So just think about it. 00:17:58.44\00:17:59.77 Whatever you're dealing with, 00:17:59.77\00:18:01.08 I'm going to give that to God. 00:18:01.08\00:18:02.68 And you say, 00:18:02.68\00:18:03.08 What does that mean? 00:18:03.21\00:18:04.11 You're just saying, Lord, 00:18:04.11\00:18:05.38 I'm going to trust You, 00:18:05.38\00:18:06.21 that You're going 00:18:06.21\00:18:06.51 to take care of this problem. 00:18:06.92\00:18:08.52 And the way He takes 00:18:08.52\00:18:09.65 care of things 00:18:09.65\00:18:11.89 sometimes it's the way 00:18:11.89\00:18:12.99 humanly we'd say, 00:18:12.99\00:18:13.86 Oh, that's 00:18:13.86\00:18:14.46 how you take care of things. 00:18:14.52\00:18:15.92 But other times 00:18:15.92\00:18:16.59 it doesn't look like 00:18:16.59\00:18:17.53 the way we take care of it. 00:18:17.53\00:18:18.59 But He still takes the problem. 00:18:18.59\00:18:20.56 That's what He's saying. 00:18:20.56\00:18:21.43 He takes the burden. 00:18:21.43\00:18:23.16 Now, here's 00:18:23.16\00:18:23.70 what David was tempted to do. 00:18:23.87\00:18:25.30 In that very Psalm 00:18:25.30\00:18:27.00 verses 6 to 8. 00:18:27.00\00:18:28.10 Here's what he said. 00:18:28.10\00:18:29.17 Oh, that I had wings 00:18:29.17\00:18:30.61 like a dove. 00:18:30.61\00:18:32.11 I would fly away 00:18:32.11\00:18:33.61 and be at rest. 00:18:33.61\00:18:34.88 Indeed, I would wander far off 00:18:34.88\00:18:36.95 and remain in the wilderness. 00:18:36.95\00:18:38.91 I would hasten my escape 00:18:38.91\00:18:40.15 from the windy 00:18:40.15\00:18:40.72 storm and tempest. 00:18:40.72\00:18:41.65 I would just get out of here. 00:18:41.65\00:18:42.78 I would just 00:18:42.78\00:18:43.25 and I know sometimes 00:18:45.02\00:18:45.95 we can feel that way. 00:18:45.95\00:18:47.59 But David didn't flee. 00:18:47.59\00:18:50.23 He didn't run from 00:18:50.23\00:18:51.59 what God had called him to do. 00:18:51.59\00:18:53.23 He stayed were God 00:18:53.23\00:18:54.23 had placed him, 00:18:54.23\00:18:55.26 and he cast his burdens 00:18:55.26\00:18:57.87 on the Lord. 00:18:57.87\00:18:58.73 Let me just take a minute 00:18:58.73\00:18:59.73 with this, because this is not 00:18:59.73\00:19:03.71 a reliable general strategy 00:19:03.71\00:19:05.64 and some people rely on this. 00:19:05.64\00:19:07.24 You know, 00:19:07.24\00:19:07.51 we mentioned 00:19:07.64\00:19:07.94 some of these substances. 00:19:08.28\00:19:09.48 Some people go to substances 00:19:09.48\00:19:12.15 to deal with stress. 00:19:12.15\00:19:15.08 Now, 00:19:15.08\00:19:16.52 I don't want to 00:19:16.52\00:19:17.19 be misunderstood 00:19:17.19\00:19:18.25 because life is not all stern 00:19:18.25\00:19:22.29 and you can never take a break. 00:19:22.29\00:19:23.63 After all 00:19:23.63\00:19:24.13 Jesus Himself, you remember, 00:19:24.29\00:19:25.96 after 00:19:25.96\00:19:26.33 He sent the disciples out, 00:19:26.59\00:19:27.76 He said, come apart 00:19:27.76\00:19:29.66 and rest awhile. 00:19:29.66\00:19:30.93 This isn 00:19:30.93\00:19:31.37 ?eaking against taking a break 00:19:31.63\00:19:33.03 and having times of rest. 00:19:33.03\00:19:34.47 We need that. 00:19:34.47\00:19:35.84 But this idea somehow 00:19:35.84\00:19:39.14 that we have to engage 00:19:40.08\00:19:41.58 in behaviors 00:19:41.58\00:19:43.14 that have negative consequences 00:19:43.14\00:19:45.78 is the problem. You see. 00:19:45.78\00:19:47.95 Any of you, if you're 00:19:50.62\00:19:51.25 struggling with addictions, 00:19:51.25\00:19:52.39 I'm not saying this 00:19:52.39\00:19:54.02 to make you feel bad 00:19:54.02\00:19:55.76 because addictions 00:19:55.76\00:19:57.09 are something, 00:19:57.09\00:19:58.13 if you want 00:19:58.13\00:19:59.29 my perspective on it, 00:19:59.29\00:20:00.30 they're part of the 00:20:00.30\00:20:00.76 human experience. 00:20:00.76\00:20:02.00 We gravitate to things 00:20:02.00\00:20:03.67 when we're under pressure 00:20:03.67\00:20:05.40 because what? 00:20:05.40\00:20:06.37 If you get consumed 00:20:06.37\00:20:07.74 by an addiction, 00:20:07.74\00:20:08.84 you're not dealing 00:20:08.84\00:20:10.37 with the other problems, right? 00:20:10.37\00:20:13.38 And so so we there's a tendency 00:20:13.68\00:20:15.84 humanity tends 00:20:15.84\00:20:16.95 to go to things 00:20:16.95\00:20:17.81 that that that captivate them 00:20:17.81\00:20:20.82 and they feel it's 00:20:21.18\00:20:22.28 doing them some good. 00:20:22.28\00:20:23.25 But the problem 00:20:23.25\00:20:23.99 with an addiction 00:20:23.99\00:20:25.02 is it's counterproductive. 00:20:25.02\00:20:27.79 It's destroying you, it's 00:20:27.79\00:20:28.96 undermining your resolve. 00:20:28.96\00:20:30.39 It does it 00:20:30.39\00:20:31.06 when someone goes to the bottle 00:20:31.06\00:20:32.73 to drown their stress, 00:20:32.73\00:20:34.23 what happens?
