00:02:10.66\00:02:13.66 One of the place 00:02:14.30\00:02:15.06 where he places 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.03 where he distinguished 00:02:16.03\00:02:17.23 himself was in one of the 00:02:17.23\00:02:19.43 decisive Mexican-American war 00:02:19.43\00:02:22.07 battles. 00:02:22.07\00:02:23.24 Back in August 20 of 1847. 00:02:23.24\00:02:26.47 How soon we forget? 00:02:26.84\00:02:28.01 How long ago was that? 00:02:28.01\00:02:29.14 So you're 00:02:30.31\00:02:30.71 saying that was 00:02:30.71\00:02:31.15 a long time ago. 00:02:31.15\00:02:33.72 But something else happened 00:02:33.72\00:02:35.22 in 1847 00:02:35.22\00:02:37.29 in northwestern Indiana. 00:02:37.29\00:02:38.75 Do any of you know 00:02:38.75\00:02:41.76 I know you're 00:02:43.02\00:02:43.73 just trying to be modest 00:02:43.73\00:02:45.93 because the Battle 00:02:45.93\00:02:47.03 of Churubusco 00:02:47.03\00:02:48.33 took place in Mexico, 00:02:48.33\00:02:51.13 and one of the 00:02:51.13\00:02:52.00 distinguished officers 00:02:52.00\00:02:53.87 was none other than then, 00:02:53.87\00:03:00.14 that's right, 00:03:00.21\00:03:00.71 he was a lieutenant colonel 00:03:00.88\00:03:01.81 at that time, but 00:03:01.81\00:03:03.45 General Smith. 00:03:03.45\00:03:05.25 Yeah. 00:03:05.25\00:03:05.75 You got the history down. 00:03:05.88\00:03:08.12 So General Smith, though, 00:03:08.12\00:03:09.72 unfortunately died 00:03:09.72\00:03:11.25 during the Civil War. 00:03:11.25\00:03:12.79 What's perhaps 00:03:12.79\00:03:13.52 the most interesting thing 00:03:13.52\00:03:14.96 about him 00:03:14.96\00:03:15.76 as far as stress management 00:03:15.76\00:03:17.46 in our dialog today, 00:03:17.46\00:03:19.33 at least from my vantage 00:03:19.33\00:03:20.53 point, is he died not from 00:03:20.53\00:03:23.90 any enemy casualty. 00:03:24.70\00:03:27.60 He was not a war casualty, 00:03:27.60\00:03:30.37 even though he died 00:03:30.37\00:03:31.17 during the war. 00:03:31.17\00:03:32.44 He actually died because of 00:03:32.44\00:03:35.44 an infection. 00:03:35.84\00:03:36.88 And he sustained this infection 00:03:37.91\00:03:40.02 because the account says 00:03:40.02\00:03:42.15 I mean, there's different 00:03:42.15\00:03:42.85 historical accounts. 00:03:42.85\00:03:43.99 Some say he scraped his leg 00:03:43.99\00:03:45.85 when jumping into a boat 00:03:45.85\00:03:47.62 during his generalship. 00:03:47.62\00:03:49.66 Others said it was more 00:03:49.66\00:03:50.83 than just a scratch. 00:03:50.83\00:03:52.06 It was a 00:03:52.06\00:03:52.79 quite a deep or nasty cut. 00:03:52.79\00:03:55.26 But either way, 00:03:55.26\00:03:56.77 this was what 00:03:56.77\00:03:57.40 set the stage 00:03:57.40\00:03:58.73 for an infection 00:03:58.73\00:03:59.87 that claimed his life. 00:03:59.87\00:04:01.40 Now, that may not sound 00:04:01.40\00:04:03.24 all that dramatic to you, 00:04:03.24\00:04:04.54 and you might think 00:04:04.54\00:04:05.21 that not too many people 00:04:05.21\00:04:06.37 die of infection today. 00:04:06.37\00:04:08.48 But if you're in the 00:04:08.48\00:04:09.54 medical community, 00:04:09.54\00:04:10.61 you realize that infection 00:04:10.61\00:04:12.71 is still a leading 00:04:12.71\00:04:13.68 cause of death. 00:04:13.68\00:04:14.45 Even with all our 00:04:14.45\00:04:15.12 antibiotics and 00:04:15.12\00:04:17.09 lifesaving therapies 00:04:17.09\00:04:18.59 that we have, some 1.7 00:04:18.59\00:04:20.29 million adults 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.09 develop one of these 00:04:22.09\00:04:23.12 overwhelming infections, 00:04:23.12\00:04:24.46 blood infections 00:04:24.46\00:04:25.36 that we call sepsis. 00:04:25.36\00:04:27.36 One in six of them will die. 00:04:27.36\00:04:29.83 And if you actually do 00:04:29.83\00:04:30.87 the math, that means every day 00:04:30.87\00:04:33.03 700 people in our country die 00:04:33.03\00:04:35.60 from sepsis. 00:04:35.60\00:04:36.64 Well, you say, 00:04:38.11\00:04:40.18 okay, well, 00:04:40.18\00:04:40.84 what does all this have to do 00:04:40.84\00:04:42.08 with stress management? 00:04:42.08\00:04:43.31 I came here 00:04:43.31\00:04:43.95 hoping for stress management 00:04:43.95\00:04:45.78 help, and you're 00:04:45.78\00:04:46.31 just stressing me out 00:04:46.31\00:04:47.42 with something else 00:04:47.42\00:04:48.15 I've got to worry about. 00:04:48.15\00:04:50.32 Well, actually, stress 00:04:50.32\00:04:52.69 has something in common 00:04:52.69\00:04:54.02 with sepsis and infection. 00:04:54.02\00:04:56.19 Sepsis, you see, can be thought 00:04:56.19\00:04:57.93 of as a failure 00:04:57.93\00:04:59.09 of the immune system. 00:04:59.09\00:05:00.30 Now we're not trying to 00:05:00.30\00:05:01.23 blame anyone 00:05:01.23\00:05:02.13 for getting septic. 00:05:02.13\00:05:04.20 We don't want to blame 00:05:04.20\00:05:05.30 General Smith or anyone else. 00:05:05.30\00:05:07.14 But it is 00:05:07.14\00:05:08.47 when the germs 00:05:08.47\00:05:09.57 get their upper hand 00:05:09.57\00:05:10.61 on your immune system. 00:05:10.61\00:05:12.87 And this is really a powerful 00:05:12.87\00:05:15.31 analogy with stress. 00:05:15.31\00:05:18.31 Let's go back to 00:05:18.58\00:05:20.18 to General Smith. 00:05:20.18\00:05:21.12 Quite ironic, 00:05:21.12\00:05:22.62 at least from my vantage 00:05:22.62\00:05:24.02 point as a physician. 00:05:24.02\00:05:25.72 He was one of the heroes of 00:05:25.72\00:05:27.62 of Union General Grants, 00:05:27.62\00:05:29.42 one of his early campaigns, 00:05:29.42\00:05:31.33 because General Smith 00:05:34.13\00:05:36.33 was a key figure 00:05:36.33\00:05:37.53 in breaching the defenses 00:05:37.53\00:05:40.10 of Fort Donelson. 00:05:40.10\00:05:41.34 You may know 00:05:41.34\00:05:43.17 civil war history early 00:05:43.17\00:05:44.77 in some of those 00:05:44.77\00:05:45.34 Western campaigns 00:05:45.34\00:05:46.54 that Grant was involved with. 00:05:46.54\00:05:48.84 He did what? 00:05:48.84\00:05:49.88 He breached 00:05:49.88\00:05:51.35 the defenses of Fort Donelson. 00:05:51.35\00:05:54.12 Why I find this 00:05:54.12\00:05:54.98 so ironic is 00:05:54.98\00:05:56.05 because he ended up dying 00:05:56.05\00:05:58.12 because germs 00:05:58.12\00:05:59.42 were able to what? 00:05:59.42\00:06:01.22 Breach his immune system's 00:06:01.22\00:06:03.56 first line of defense, 00:06:03.56\00:06:04.66 which is our skin. 00:06:04.66\00:06:07.60 Interesting, isn't it? 00:06:08.50\00:06:11.47 If we understand 00:06:12.63\00:06:13.84 the immune system 00:06:13.84\00:06:14.67 and just some basics, 00:06:14.67\00:06:15.74 don't worry, 00:06:15.74\00:06:16.20 we won't give you 00:06:16.20\00:06:16.81 a full medical school lecture. 00:06:16.87\00:06:19.11 But I believe if we understand 00:06:19.11\00:06:20.84 just some basics 00:06:20.84\00:06:21.81 about the immune system, 00:06:21.81\00:06:23.04 we can better understand 00:06:23.04\00:06:24.45 how to deal with any stresses 00:06:24.45\00:06:26.51 that we face in life. 00:06:26.51\00:06:27.75 You game for this? 00:06:27.75\00:06:29.28 Hang in there with me 00:06:29.28\00:06:30.25 and we'll try to give you 00:06:30.25\00:06:31.55 a different framework, 00:06:31.55\00:06:32.75 perhaps for dealing 00:06:32.75\00:06:33.89 with the stresses in your life. 00:06:33.89\00:06:36.46 So there's parallels 00:06:36.46\00:06:37.93 between the immune system 00:06:37.93\00:06:40.00 and our stress 00:06:40.00\00:06:40.93 management system. 00:06:40.93\00:06:42.40 So just as we began 00:06:42.40\00:06:43.97 speaking about kind of 00:06:43.97\00:06:45.27 first lines of defense, 00:06:45.27\00:06:46.60 that your immune system has 00:06:46.60\00:06:48.44 to protect us. 00:06:48.44\00:06:49.37 So it is 00:06:49.37\00:06:50.01 with our bodies and stress. 00:06:50.01\00:06:53.44 So immune system, 00:06:53.91\00:06:55.51 stress system, 00:06:55.51\00:06:56.88 multiple lines of defense. 00:06:56.88\00:06:58.55 Let's talk about them. 00:06:58.55\00:06:59.51 First of all, 00:06:59.51\00:07:00.35 as we've been alluding 00:07:00.35\00:07:01.68 to, our bodies 00:07:01.68\00:07:02.55 have a first line of defense 00:07:02.55\00:07:04.29 and it's passive. 00:07:04.29\00:07:05.49 We're not doing anything. 00:07:05.49\00:07:06.76 It's not specially 00:07:06.76\00:07:07.62 focused on anything. 00:07:07.62\00:07:08.92 But we've got things 00:07:08.92\00:07:09.82 like our skin. 00:07:09.82\00:07:10.83 The physical 00:07:10.83\00:07:11.99 barrier of our skin 00:07:11.99\00:07:13.16 is a powerful, 00:07:13.16\00:07:14.66 powerful protector 00:07:14.66\00:07:16.63 against infection. 00:07:16.63\00:07:18.13 That's why large burns 00:07:18.13\00:07:19.43 are so devastating. 00:07:19.43\00:07:20.54 At least one of the reasons. 00:07:21.80\00:07:23.74 So we have physical barriers 00:07:23.74\00:07:25.21 like our skin. 00:07:25.21\00:07:26.17 We also have this mucosa, this 00:07:26.17\00:07:29.34 lining, 00:07:29.88\00:07:30.78 on things like our mouth 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.58 and our digestive system 00:07:32.58\00:07:34.62 and our respiratory system 00:07:34.62\00:07:36.18 into our lung, 00:07:36.18\00:07:37.05 going into our lungs 00:07:37.05\00:07:37.99 and our reproductive system. 00:07:37.99\00:07:39.92 This mucosa also protects us. 00:07:39.92\00:07:42.69 It's a line of defense. 00:07:42.69\00:07:44.06 And then we have 00:07:44.06\00:07:44.56 specific substances 00:07:44.56\00:07:46.26 like the acid in our stomachs 00:07:46.26\00:07:48.46 that protect us from infection. 00:07:48.46\00:07:50.03 Now, you may or may 00:07:50.03\00:07:50.73 not realize this, 00:07:50.73\00:07:51.73 but if you're taking an acid 00:07:51.73\00:07:53.37 blocking drug, 00:07:53.37\00:07:55.20 you're lowering 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.67 your immune system. 00:07:56.67\00:07:59.04 This nonspecific 00:07:59.04\00:08:00.51 first line of defense 00:08:00.51\00:08:01.68 when it comes to 00:08:01.68\00:08:02.28 food poisoning. 00:08:02.28\00:08:03.61 So you're taking an acid 00:08:03.61\00:08:04.68 blocking drug, 00:08:04.68\00:08:05.61 you're more susceptible 00:08:05.61\00:08:07.35 to food borne infection. 00:08:07.35\00:08:09.72 Doesn't mean you should stop 00:08:09.72\00:08:10.75 that medicine, 00:08:10.75\00:08:11.69 of course, consult 00:08:11.69\00:08:12.49 with your doctor 00:08:12.49\00:08:13.59 if you've been prescribed 00:08:13.59\00:08:14.56 something. Right. 00:08:14.56\00:08:15.79 But are you getting the picture 00:08:15.79\00:08:17.19 here? 00:08:17.19\00:08:17.36 We've got some general things 00:08:17.89\00:08:18.76 that protect us from infection. 00:08:18.76\00:08:20.10 Now, it's true also 00:08:20.10\00:08:21.70 when it comes to stress. 00:08:21.70\00:08:23.00 We have some passive 00:08:23.00\00:08:24.67 nonspecific things that help 00:08:24.67\00:08:26.80 to protect us from stress. 00:08:26.80\00:08:28.34 And these we usually categorize 00:08:28.34\00:08:30.14 as resiliency 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.37 factors, things that protect 00:08:31.37\00:08:33.48 us, things that help us 00:08:33.48\00:08:35.18 without any specific 00:08:35.18\00:08:36.71 focus on any given stressor, 00:08:36.71\00:08:38.85 they're helping us 00:08:38.85\00:08:40.28 to be less likely 00:08:40.28\00:08:41.72 adversely affected by 00:08:41.72\00:08:43.28 anything that comes at us. 00:08:43.28\00:08:44.75 Now, if we take this analogy 00:08:46.25\00:08:48.06 a little bit further, 00:08:48.06\00:08:49.26 our immune system 00:08:49.26\00:08:50.39 has certain cells. 00:08:50.39\00:08:52.29 They?actually 00:08:52.29\00:08:53.40 cellular defense 00:08:53.40\00:08:55.26 mechanisms 00:08:55.26\00:08:56.26 to protect us from infection. 00:08:56.26\00:08:58.67 So we have something 00:08:58.67\00:08:59.33 called the innate immune system 00:08:59.33\00:09:01.84 that is nonspecific. 00:09:01.84\00:09:03.91 And then we have something 00:09:03.91\00:09:04.87 that's specific. 00:09:04.87\00:09:05.87 We call it the acquired 00:09:05.87\00:09:07.44 immune system. 00:09:07.44\00:09:08.21 Let's just 00:09:08.21\00:09:08.71 look briefly at these two arms 00:09:08.88\00:09:12.15 of your cellular immune system. 00:09:12.38\00:09:15.32 So the cells in 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.22 this preprogrammed 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.29 innate immune system 00:09:19.29\00:09:21.26 are things like, 00:09:21.26\00:09:22.32 you may have heard of them, 00:09:22.32\00:09:23.49 the neutrophils 00:09:23.49\00:09:25.06 and the macrophages, 00:09:25.06\00:09:26.49 two types of white blood cells. 00:09:26.49\00:09:28.03 Now let's just step away 00:09:28.03\00:09:29.20 from all this technical stuff 00:09:29.20\00:09:30.53 and talk about something fun 00:09:30.53\00:09:32.03 like video games. Okay? 00:09:32.03\00:09:34.57 How many of you in the old days 00:09:34.57\00:09:36.77 ever heard 00:09:36.77\00:09:37.57 of something called Pacman? 00:09:37.57\00:09:40.58 Do you know what 00:09:41.38\00:09:41.98 the Pacman did? 00:09:41.98\00:09:43.21 He ate things up. 00:09:44.65\00:09:45.85 Okay. 00:09:45.85\00:09:46.72 One of the early video games. 00:09:46.72\00:09:48.65 Well, 00:09:48.65\00:09:48.82 this is how your 00:09:49.12\00:09:49.68 macrophages work. 00:09:49.68\00:09:50.95 They work like Pacman 00:09:50.95\00:09:52.85 and they actually gobble up 00:09:52.85\00:09:55.06 invading germs. 00:09:55.06\00:09:57.83 They are macrophages. 00:09:57.83\00:09:59.86 Macro means large. 00:09:59.86\00:10:03.16 What is phage to refer to? 00:10:03.37\00:10:05.13 To eat, okay? 00:10:05.13\00:10:06.84 So they're just 00:10:06.84\00:10:07.74 gobbling up things. 00:10:07.74\00:10:09.00 They work against 00:10:09.00\00:10:11.97 different microbes 00:10:12.44\00:10:13.48 that come into your system. 00:10:13.48\00:10:15.84 They respond quickly. 00:10:15.84\00:10:17.41 They are not targeted 00:10:17.41\00:10:18.71 just to one germ or another. 00:10:18.71\00:10:21.65 Now, you also have an acquired 00:10:21.65\00:10:24.39 immune system 00:10:24.39\00:10:25.65 in this illustration here, 00:10:25.65\00:10:27.79 whether you can see it 00:10:27.79\00:10:28.72 well or not, 00:10:28.72\00:10:29.29 the green is a bacterium 00:10:29.29\00:10:32.06 and the pink 00:10:32.06\00:10:33.43 are supposed 00:10:33.43\00:10:34.00 to represent antibodies. 00:10:34.00\00:10:36.50 So these are 00:10:36.50\00:10:37.13 specific antibodies 00:10:37.13\00:10:39.13 that attack 00:10:39.13\00:10:39.80 just this particular bacterium. 00:10:39.80\00:10:42.84 Okay. 00:10:43.10\00:10:44.24 And this is a slower system 00:10:44.24\00:10:47.31 because if your body 00:10:47.31\00:10:48.28 has not been exposed 00:10:48.28\00:10:49.41 to that particular microbe, 00:10:49.41\00:10:51.41 it has to make 00:10:51.41\00:10:52.55 specific antibodies 00:10:52.55\00:10:54.12 to deal with it. 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.55 So this is where you have 00:10:55.55\00:10:56.92 some very specific 00:10:56.92\00:10:59.05 immune functioning. 00:10:59.05\00:11:00.72 They say, 00:11:00.72\00:11:01.06 What does all this have to do 00:11:01.42\00:11:02.09 with your stress system? 00:11:02.09\00:11:03.49 Well, it's 00:11:03.49\00:11:03.79 because this is true 00:11:04.03\00:11:05.06 in the stress system as well. 00:11:05.06\00:11:06.26 You have these 00:11:06.26\00:11:06.66 general protective 00:11:06.76\00:11:07.86 preventive things, 00:11:07.86\00:11:09.93 these resiliency factors, 00:11:09.93\00:11:12.23 but then you have 00:11:12.23\00:11:12.87 specific things, 00:11:12.87\00:11:13.90 general strategies 00:11:13.90\00:11:15.17 that can work for any stressor, 00:11:15.17\00:11:17.01 and then specific strategies 00:11:17.01\00:11:19.74 that work 00:11:19.74\00:11:20.51 for specific stressors. 00:11:20.51\00:11:23.08 So from that framework, 00:11:23.08\00:11:24.98 I want to take you to, 00:11:24.98\00:11:26.68 believe it or not, the Bible. 00:11:26.68\00:11:29.12 But before we go, 00:11:29.12\00:11:30.02 I just want to make 00:11:30.02\00:11:30.65 you make sure that you've got 00:11:30.72\00:11:32.02 my general organization down. 00:11:32.02\00:11:33.82 What we're going 00:11:33.82\00:11:34.16 to walk through with you 00:11:34.42\00:11:35.46 in this presentation. 00:11:35.46\00:11:36.86 We're going to talk 00:11:36.86\00:11:37.39 about General passive 00:11:37.39\00:11:39.83 protective things. 00:11:39.83\00:11:40.73 They're passive 00:11:40.73\00:11:41.33 because they're not focused 00:11:41.33\00:11:42.66 on any specific insult. 00:11:42.66\00:11:44.77 They just help you 00:11:44.77\00:11:45.90 be more resilient. 00:11:45.90\00:11:46.77 We're going to look 00:11:46.77\00:11:47.20 at some general things 00:11:47.30\00:11:48.74 that help you 00:11:48.74\00:11:49.87 to deal with stress. 00:11:49.87\00:11:51.54 Then we're going to look 00:11:51.54\00:11:52.34 at some general active things. 00:11:52.34\00:11:54.18 These are things 00:11:54.18\00:11:54.88 that you can use 00:11:54.88\00:11:55.84 in the face of any stressor, 00:11:55.84\00:11:58.08 kind of like your 00:11:58.08\00:11:59.28 innate immune system. 00:11:59.28\00:12:01.05 But then we're going to look 00:12:01.05\00:12:01.92 at some specific 00:12:01.92\00:12:03.22 things, active strategies 00:12:03.22\00:12:05.12 that work 00:12:05.12\00:12:05.62 for specific stressors. 00:12:05.69\00:12:07.26 Have you got the analogy down? 00:12:07.26\00:12:09.29 So let's see if this 00:12:09.29\00:12:10.43 if this works. 00:12:10.43\00:12:11.13 So we want to especially 00:12:11.13\00:12:12.36 look at this 00:12:12.36\00:12:13.36 from a Biblical perspective. 00:12:13.36\00:12:15.66 And the Bible really 00:12:15.66\00:12:17.93 does help us on all 00:12:17.93\00:12:19.33 these levels. 00:12:19.33\00:12:21.17 So we're going to start where? 00:12:21.17\00:12:22.50 With these general passive 00:12:22.50\00:12:24.04 strategies, things 00:12:24.04\00:12:24.94 that make us more resilient, 00:12:24.94\00:12:26.68 things that make us less likely 00:12:26.68\00:12:28.51 to be overcome by stress. 00:12:28.51\00:12:30.35 And here's the first one. 00:12:31.45\00:12:32.58 Number one, 00:12:32.58\00:12:33.58 a general passive strategy, 00:12:33.58\00:12:35.28 and I call it the Why, the Why. 00:12:35.28\00:12:39.62 Here's number one. 00:12:39.72\00:12:40.96 You are of value by creation. 00:12:40.96\00:12:44.63 Do you realize that 00:12:45.33\00:12:45.99 just realizing 00:12:45.99\00:12:46.86 that you are of value 00:12:46.86\00:12:48.90 can help you 00:12:48.90\00:12:49.86 with a lot of the stressors 00:12:49.86\00:12:51.13 in this world? 00:12:51.13\00:12:52.43 You know, many people struggle 00:12:52.43\00:12:53.77 with a sense of meaning. 00:12:53.77\00:12:55.04 Here is what the Bible says 00:12:55.04\00:12:56.47 in Psalm 139, 00:12:56.47\00:12:58.14 I praise you because I am what? 00:12:58.14\00:13:01.11 Fearfully and wonderfully made; 00:13:01.11\00:13:04.11 your works are wonderful, 00:13:04.18\00:13:05.95 I know that full well. 00:13:05.95\00:13:07.95 Isn't this amazing? 00:13:07.95\00:13:09.38 God has created you. 00:13:09.38\00:13:11.52 He has a special love 00:13:11.52\00:13:12.59 for you as His child 00:13:12.59\00:13:13.56 by creation. 00:13:13.56\00:13:16.56 But here's another why. 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.03 Why you should be 00:13:19.03\00:13:21.60 concerned 00:13:21.60\00:13:22.16 about caring for your body, 00:13:22.26\00:13:23.16 but why you can have resiliency 00:13:23.16\00:13:25.63 in the face of challenges. 00:13:25.63\00:13:26.94 You're a value by redemption. 00:13:26.94\00:13:29.14 I think most of you know 00:13:30.31\00:13:31.94 John 3:16. 00:13:31.94\00:13:33.17 And whether you memorize it 00:13:33.17\00:13:34.18 in the New King 00:13:34.18\00:13:34.91 James version or another, 00:13:34.91\00:13:36.95 the message is simple, 00:13:36.95\00:13:38.55 isn't it? 00:13:38.55\00:13:39.48 God so loved you, the world, 00:13:39.48\00:13:42.45 everyone on this planet, 00:13:42.45\00:13:44.99 that He gave 00:13:44.99\00:13:45.95 His only begotten Son. 00:13:45.95\00:13:47.19 You're not only a value 00:13:47.19\00:13:48.86 because of creation, 00:13:48.86\00:13:49.92 but you're very valuable 00:13:49.92\00:13:51.49 because God gave His only Son 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.46 for you. 00:13:53.46\00:13:56.43 Number 00:14:01.90\00:14:02.27 three, here's the How now. 00:14:02.54\00:14:05.27 So we've been looking 00:14:05.44\00:14:06.21 at understanding 00:14:06.21\00:14:07.48 some of these things 00:14:07.48\00:14:08.61 that are the why, 00:14:08.61\00:14:09.88 why we're a value by creation 00:14:09.88\00:14:14.32 and by redemption. 00:14:14.32\00:14:15.72 This gives us resiliency 00:14:15.72\00:14:17.69 when we're dealing 00:14:17.69\00:14:18.25 with difficulties 00:14:18.25\00:14:19.09 we?important to God, 00:14:19.09\00:14:20.12 even if it doesn't seem 00:14:20.12\00:14:21.12 that way sometimes. 00:14:21.12\00:14:22.66 But now we have something 00:14:22.66\00:14:23.99 that brings this to us 00:14:23.99\00:14:26.03 into application 00:14:26.03\00:14:27.76 for each of us. 00:14:27.76\00:14:29.03 Paul is writing to the church 00:14:29.03\00:14:30.33 in Corinth in 1 Corinthians 6, 00:14:30.33\00:14:32.73 and he says this, 00:14:32.73\00:14:33.94 Do you not know 00:14:33.94\00:14:35.64 that your body is 00:14:35.64\00:14:36.71 the temple of the Holy Spirit 00:14:36.71\00:14:38.37 who is in you, 00:14:38.37\00:14:39.91 whom you have from God, 00:14:39.91\00:14:41.51 and you are not your own? 00:14:41.51\00:14:43.28 For you were bought at a price; 00:14:43.28\00:14:45.88 therefore glorify 00:14:45.88\00:14:47.72 God in your body 00:14:47.72\00:14:48.85 and in your spirit, 00:14:48.85\00:14:49.88 which are God?So not only 00:14:49.88\00:14:52.49 do you have meaning because 00:14:53.49\00:14:54.99 Christ died for you, 00:14:54.99\00:14:56.19 but because 00:14:56.19\00:14:57.13 you've been bought with 00:14:57.13\00:14:57.76 the price. 00:14:57.76\00:14:58.86 God is saying 00:14:58.86\00:14:59.86 you should care for yourself. 00:14:59.86\00:15:02.90 You should care for your body 00:15:03.10\00:15:05.30 as a body temple. 00:15:05.30\00:15:07.24 Now think about this 00:15:07.24\00:15:08.07 for a minute. 00:15:08.07\00:15:08.84 If let's say 00:15:08.84\00:15:10.57 you have a rich uncle 00:15:10.57\00:15:12.54 and your rich uncle gives you a 00:15:12.54\00:15:15.54 red Lamborghini, okay? 00:15:16.98\00:15:19.71 Now I have to tell, 00:15:19.71\00:15:21.02 you guys are trying to, 00:15:21.02\00:15:21.98 you know, Lamborghini 00:15:21.98\00:15:23.12 doesn't cut it. It's a Camaro. 00:15:23.12\00:15:24.59 Is that right? 00:15:24.59\00:15:25.09 Am I finally getting it? 00:15:25.19\00:15:26.52 Okay. Okay. A red Camaro. 00:15:26.52\00:15:28.06 Whatever you want. 00:15:28.06\00:15:31.06 He gives you this 00:15:31.13\00:15:31.99 vehicle, okay? 00:15:31.99\00:15:33.76 So how do you care 00:15:33.76\00:15:36.06 for that vehicle 00:15:36.06\00:15:37.03 if you care about your uncle? 00:15:37.03\00:15:39.03 Are you going to 00:15:39.03\00:15:40.20 take good care of it? 00:15:40.20\00:15:41.77 The gift, 00:15:41.77\00:15:43.51 how you care for the gift 00:15:43.51\00:15:46.24 not only shows 00:15:46.24\00:15:47.18 how much 00:15:47.18\00:15:47.51 you appreciate the gift, 00:15:47.78\00:15:48.74 but how much you value 00:15:48.74\00:15:50.01 the giver. 00:15:50.01\00:15:51.41 So God has given you 00:15:51.41\00:15:52.55 this gift of life 00:15:52.55\00:15:54.52 and He asks you to glorify 00:15:54.52\00:15:56.79 God in your body. 00:15:56.79\00:15:57.69 So this is giving you somehow, 00:15:57.69\00:15:59.39 this is so you're developing 00:15:59.39\00:16:02.89 some perspective on resilience 00:16:02.99\00:16:05.36 because you want to care 00:16:05.36\00:16:06.53 for this body that 00:16:06.53\00:16:07.30 God's given you. 00:16:07.30\00:16:08.23 But there's more 00:16:09.66\00:16:10.30 to it than that. 00:16:10.30\00:16:11.53 There is more to it than that. 00:16:11.53\00:16:14.54 You can strengthen your ability 00:16:16.20\00:16:19.11 to deal with any stressor 00:16:19.11\00:16:20.94 if you develop this practice 00:16:20.94\00:16:23.95 focusing on things 00:16:24.01\00:16:25.55 that are good. 00:16:25.55\00:16:26.08 And here's 00:16:26.08\00:16:26.41 the particular focus, 00:16:26.65\00:16:28.15 at least in Matthew 7. 00:16:28.15\00:16:30.25 Jesus has just been preaching 00:16:30.25\00:16:32.89 through His Sermon 00:16:32.89\00:16:34.02 on the Mount. 00:16:34.02\00:16:34.86 And when He comes to chapter 00:16:34.86\00:16:36.09 7, verse 24, 00:16:36.09\00:16:37.13 He is concluding 00:16:37.13\00:16:37.89 this powerful sermon 00:16:37.89\00:16:39.19 and He says, Therefore, 00:16:39.19\00:16:40.30 whoever hears 00:16:40.30\00:16:41.26 these sayings of Mine, 00:16:41.26\00:16:42.50 and does them, 00:16:42.50\00:16:43.50 I will liken him to a wise man 00:16:43.50\00:16:46.23 who built his house on what? 00:16:46.23\00:16:48.84 On the rock. 00:16:48.84\00:16:50.24 But everyone who hears 00:16:50.24\00:16:51.31 these sayings of Mine, 00:16:51.31\00:16:52.47 and does not do them, 00:16:52.47\00:16:54.24 they will be like a foolish man 00:16:54.24\00:16:56.58 who built his house on what? 00:16:56.58\00:16:58.61 On the sand. 00:16:58.61\00:16:59.71 So what is it 00:16:59.71\00:17:01.15 that differentiates 00:17:01.15\00:17:02.95 the one who is going to fail? 00:17:02.95\00:17:04.85 Right? Is this the imagery? 00:17:04.85\00:17:06.05 You build 00:17:06.05\00:17:06.42 your house on the sand, 00:17:06.62\00:17:07.42 what are you setting 00:17:07.42\00:17:08.02 yourself up to do? 00:17:08.02\00:17:09.79 fail - to be overcome? 00:17:09.79\00:17:11.46 If you set 00:17:12.46\00:17:12.96 yourself on a rock, 00:17:12.96\00:17:15.16 you're setting yourself 00:17:15.16\00:17:16.06 to be successful. 00:17:16.06\00:17:17.10 Building on the rock. 00:17:17.10\00:17:18.67 In this analogy, 00:17:18.67\00:17:19.60 what's the good thing 00:17:19.60\00:17:20.74 we should be focusing on? 00:17:20.74\00:17:22.20 On Jesus and His Word. 00:17:22.20\00:17:24.71 Hear these sayings of Mine, 00:17:24.71\00:17:27.28 Jesus said, and do them. 00:17:27.28\00:17:29.31 So how do you hear 00:17:29.31\00:17:30.25 God's sayings? 00:17:30.25\00:17:32.48 How do you hear them? 00:17:32.48\00:17:34.35 That's right. 00:17:34.35\00:17:34.88 You study your Bible, okay? 00:17:35.02\00:17:37.09 You engage with the Word, 00:17:37.09\00:17:38.39 whether it's in a sermon, 00:17:38.39\00:17:39.59 whether it's in a Sabbath 00:17:39.59\00:17:40.59 School class, 00:17:40.59\00:17:41.86 whether it's 00:17:41.86\00:17:42.32 in your personal devotions. 00:17:42.52\00:17:44.43 But it doesn't say 00:17:44.43\00:17:45.23 just hear these 00:17:45.23\00:17:46.19 sayings of Mine. 00:17:46.19\00:17:46.93 What else does 00:17:46.93\00:17:47.93 the Scripture say? 00:17:47.93\00:17:49.90 You do them, okay? 00:17:49.90\00:17:52.37 And these are secrets 00:17:52.37\00:17:55.20 to helping us avoid the ravages 00:17:55.20\00:17:58.41 of stress 00:17:58.41\00:17:59.14 before the stress comes at us. 00:17:59.14\00:18:01.64 Now, how do we, 00:18:01.64\00:18:03.31 how are we to invest 00:18:03.31\00:18:04.81 in self-care? 00:18:04.81\00:18:06.45 The Bible has some 00:18:06.45\00:18:07.08 interesting insights about it, 00:18:07.08\00:18:09.45 and Luke 21 00:18:09.45\00:18:11.02 is an interesting place to go. 00:18:11.02\00:18:12.22 Some of you 00:18:12.22\00:18:12.59 that have been with us 00:18:12.75\00:18:14.26 on a regular basis, 00:18:14.26\00:18:15.26 we've been going 00:18:15.26\00:18:15.86 through the Gospel of Mark 00:18:15.86\00:18:16.96 and we've taken a little break 00:18:16.96\00:18:18.66 here from our study 00:18:18.66\00:18:20.33 through Mark's gospel. 00:18:20.33\00:18:21.86 We are approaching Mark 13. 00:18:21.86\00:18:24.57 That's where 00:18:24.57\00:18:24.90 we?be when we next 00:18:25.13\00:18:25.83 open the pages of Mark's 00:18:25.83\00:18:27.54 Gospel. 00:18:27.54\00:18:28.64 Mark 13 is paralleled 00:18:28.64\00:18:30.84 by Matthew 24 and Luke 21. 00:18:30.84\00:18:33.94 It's speaking about 00:18:35.38\00:18:36.85 some really stressful times, 00:18:36.85\00:18:39.78 speaking both 00:18:39.78\00:18:40.55 about the destruction 00:18:40.55\00:18:41.48 of Jerusalem 00:18:41.48\00:18:42.65 that was to come in 70 A.D. 00:18:42.65\00:18:44.65 Jesus speaking 00:18:44.65\00:18:45.85 these words shortly 00:18:45.85\00:18:46.86 before His crucifixion 00:18:46.86\00:18:48.46 and also referring 00:18:48.46\00:18:50.06 to the end of the world 00:18:50.06\00:18:51.29 when Jesus comes back 00:18:51.29\00:18:52.63 the second time. 00:18:52.63\00:18:53.60 Let's look at Luke 21 00:18:53.60\00:18:55.03 and see what counsel Jesus had 00:18:55.03\00:18:57.63 that relates to us 00:18:57.63\00:18:59.10 as far as dealing with stress. 00:18:59.10\00:19:01.00 But take heed to yourselves, 00:19:01.00\00:19:03.87 lest your hearts 00:19:03.87\00:19:04.84 be weighed down 00:19:04.84\00:19:05.94 with carousing, 00:19:05.94\00:19:07.41 drunkenness, 00:19:07.41\00:19:08.71 and cares of this life, 00:19:08.71\00:19:10.28 and that Day come on 00:19:10.28\00:19:11.41 you unexpectedly. 00:19:11.41\00:19:12.28 Watch therefore, and pray 00:19:12.28\00:19:14.42 always that you may be counted 00:19:14.42\00:19:16.08 worthy to escape 00:19:16.08\00:19:17.35 all these things 00:19:17.35\00:19:18.29 that will come to pass, 00:19:18.29\00:19:19.55 and to stand 00:19:19.55\00:19:20.66 before the Son of Man. 00:19:20.66\00:19:24.16 So here's 00:19:24.23\00:19:24.69 the interesting thing. 00:19:24.76\00:19:26.16 Jesus is speaking about 00:19:26.16\00:19:27.46 three categories of things 00:19:27.46\00:19:29.33 that will undermine our ability 00:19:29.33\00:19:32.47 to stand in times 00:19:32.47\00:19:34.64 of great stress. 00:19:34.64\00:19:36.40 It's translated here 00:19:36.40\00:19:37.41 as carousing, drunkenness, 00:19:37.41\00:19:39.61 and cares of this life. 00:19:39.61\00:19:41.11 If you were to 00:19:41.11\00:19:41.54 look at the Greek, 00:19:41.61\00:19:42.98 the first two words clearly 00:19:42.98\00:19:44.65 refer to intoxication. 00:19:44.65\00:19:46.88 The third 00:19:48.05\00:19:48.58 word cares of 00:19:48.58\00:19:49.35 this life 00:19:49.35\00:19:49.75 seems a bit more innocuous, 00:19:50.02\00:19:51.25 doesn't it? 00:19:51.25\00:19:52.35 After all, 00:19:52.35\00:19:52.99 we have to be concerned 00:19:52.99\00:19:54.39 about this life, right? 00:19:54.39\00:19:55.72 Hopefully you have some concern 00:19:55.72\00:19:57.33 for cares of this life. 00:19:57.33\00:19:59.86 What's going on here? 00:19:59.86\00:20:01.46 Well, 00:20:01.46\00:20:02.10 let's pay attention 00:20:02.10\00:20:02.90 first to the first two, 00:20:02.90\00:20:04.77 because it is shocking to me 00:20:04.77\00:20:06.23 as a physician 00:20:06.23\00:20:06.67 and as a pastor, 00:20:06.67\00:20:08.50 that we've got quite a bit 00:20:08.50\00:20:11.51 of Madison Avenue, 00:20:14.48\00:20:15.98 the marketing world 00:20:15.98\00:20:17.61 focused on trying 00:20:17.61\00:20:18.95 to convince people 00:20:18.95\00:20:20.95 that something is great fun. 00:20:20.95\00:20:23.82 What does it seem like 00:20:23.82\00:20:24.79 there is great efforts 00:20:24.79\00:20:26.02 to convince people is great fun 00:20:26.02\00:20:28.49 that does nothing 00:20:28.49\00:20:29.52 but undermines your ability 00:20:29.52\00:20:31.06 to deal with stress? 00:20:31.06\00:20:33.23 It's alcoholic beverages, okay? 00:20:33.23\00:20:36.40 Now, some of you may 00:20:36.46\00:20:38.03 be social drinkers. 00:20:38.03\00:20:39.47 I realize we have visitors here 00:20:39.47\00:20:41.24 as well as church members. 00:20:41.24\00:20:43.07 And you may be social drinkers. 00:20:43.07\00:20:45.51 Don't believe the commercials. 00:20:45.51\00:20:47.51 I'm just telling you, 00:20:47.51\00:20:48.41 from where I sit 00:20:48.41\00:20:50.41 as a physician, it's a lie. 00:20:50.41\00:20:53.42 These people all out there, 00:20:53.65\00:20:55.02 you know, they say, But hey, 00:20:55.02\00:20:56.22 you know, Dr. 00:20:56.22\00:20:56.82 DeRose, 00:20:56.82\00:20:57.19 I just enjoy a 00:20:57.19\00:20:58.45 glass of wine or, 00:20:58.45\00:20:59.92 you know, a beer or whatever. 00:20:59.92\00:21:01.79 I'm just telling you, 00:21:01.79\00:21:02.96 we see where it goes 00:21:02.96\00:21:04.43 in the medical community. 00:21:04.43\00:21:05.79 And let me tell you, 00:21:05.79\00:21:06.59 from the standpoint of stress, 00:21:06.59\00:21:07.93 how it works. 00:21:07.93\00:21:09.46 Neurologically, 00:21:09.46\00:21:10.77 do you know 00:21:10.77\00:21:11.47 first where alcohol works? 00:21:11.47\00:21:14.97 That's right. 00:21:15.04\00:21:15.54 It works on your frontal lobe 00:21:15.74\00:21:18.04 where your wisdom 00:21:18.04\00:21:19.57 and your judgment 00:21:19.57\00:21:21.01 and your foresight are. 00:21:21.01\00:21:22.44 And I could tell you 00:21:22.44\00:21:23.35 real life stories from patients 00:21:23.35\00:21:25.75 who've come into my office, 00:21:25.75\00:21:27.55 having done things 00:21:27.55\00:21:29.42 that they told me 00:21:29.42\00:21:30.49 they'd never would have done 00:21:30.49\00:21:32.15 had they not had often 00:21:32.15\00:21:33.66 just a little bit of alcohol. 00:21:33.66\00:21:35.32 The amount of 00:21:39.09\00:21:39.83 stress in our world 00:21:39.83\00:21:41.03 that is caused 00:21:41.03\00:21:41.56 by alcoholic beverages, 00:21:41.56\00:21:43.70 I would say, 00:21:43.70\00:21:45.07 you could argue 00:21:45.07\00:21:46.00 is incalculable. 00:21:46.00\00:21:48.37 How can you, 00:21:48.37\00:21:49.24 how can you measure it? 00:21:49.24\00:21:52.24 Alcoholic beverages 00:21:53.24\00:21:54.44 also undermine our health. 00:21:54.44\00:21:56.01 And if we're to 00:21:56.01\00:21:56.54 extend the analogy back 00:21:56.54\00:21:58.31 to where we started 00:21:58.31\00:21:59.15 with the immune system, 00:21:59.15\00:22:00.45 alcohol is an 00:22:00.45\00:22:01.38 immune suppressant. 00:22:01.38\00:22:04.09 So alcoholic beverages 00:22:04.09\00:22:05.32 are not your friend. 00:22:05.32\00:22:05.99 By the way, 00:22:05.99\00:22:06.42 they also undermine 00:22:06.52\00:22:07.59 your mucosa, 00:22:07.59\00:22:08.72 your defenses 00:22:08.72\00:22:09.52 and your 00:22:09.52\00:22:09.76 gastrointestinal tract. 00:22:10.09\00:22:12.06 We see this 00:22:12.06\00:22:13.06 actually quite often 00:22:13.06\00:22:14.63 in the medical community. 00:22:14.63\00:22:17.63 There's a case 00:22:17.80\00:22:18.40 study in the Bible 00:22:18.40\00:22:19.33 some of you may know, 00:22:19.33\00:22:21.37 not very far into the Bible. 00:22:21.37\00:22:22.97 In its third book, 00:22:22.97\00:22:23.77 the book of Leviticus 10, Nadab 00:22:23.77\00:22:27.34 and Abihu, 00:22:27.34\00:22:28.11 two sons of the high priest, 00:22:28.11\00:22:30.51 Aaron, they have been given 00:22:30.51\00:22:32.01 special privileges. 00:22:32.01\00:22:33.45 They are among 00:22:33.45\00:22:34.08 the priestly clan. 00:22:34.08\00:22:35.88 And here's how 00:22:35.88\00:22:36.58 this story plays out. 00:22:36.58\00:22:37.65 Nadab and Abihu, 00:22:37.65\00:22:38.69 it says, they 00:22:38.69\00:22:39.62 took their sensors 00:22:39.62\00:22:41.89 and they put fire in it. 00:22:41.89\00:22:43.73 They put incense 00:22:43.73\00:22:44.83 in those sensors 00:22:44.83\00:22:46.46 and then 00:22:46.46\00:22:47.76 it says 00:22:47.76\00:22:48.26 they offered profane fire 00:22:48.36\00:22:51.27 before the Lord, 00:22:51.30\00:22:52.33 which he had not 00:22:52.33\00:22:53.27 commanded them. 00:22:53.27\00:22:54.44 So fire went out from 00:22:54.44\00:22:56.14 before the Lord 00:22:56.14\00:22:56.91 and devoured them 00:22:56.91\00:22:58.07 and they died before the Lord. 00:22:58.07\00:22:59.71 Now you 00:22:59.71\00:22:59.84 say, what is going on here? 00:23:00.44\00:23:01.48 Well, in the 00:23:02.68\00:23:03.11 sanctuary system, 00:23:03.18\00:23:04.15 there were very specific 00:23:04.15\00:23:05.65 things 00:23:05.65\00:23:06.08 that the priests had to do. 00:23:06.31\00:23:07.32 It wasn't just like, hey, 00:23:07.32\00:23:08.35 just whatever way 00:23:08.35\00:23:09.12 you feel like, just do it. 00:23:09.12\00:23:10.89 And in fact, 00:23:10.89\00:23:11.49 there was only sacred fire 00:23:11.49\00:23:13.15 that was to be used 00:23:13.15\00:23:14.06 in the sanctuary. 00:23:14.06\00:23:15.36 And for some reason 00:23:15.36\00:23:16.83 they didn't use 00:23:16.83\00:23:18.19 that sacred fire. 00:23:18.19\00:23:19.96 You might say, Well, 00:23:19.96\00:23:20.80 what's going on here? 00:23:20.80\00:23:21.83 But if you read 00:23:21.83\00:23:22.36 a little bit further, 00:23:22.36\00:23:24.30 Leviticus connects the dots. 00:23:24.30\00:23:26.70 The Lord speaks 00:23:26.70\00:23:27.84 to Aaron saying, 00:23:27.84\00:23:29.17 Do not do what? 00:23:29.17\00:23:30.74 Do not drink 00:23:30.74\00:23:32.11 wine or intoxicating 00:23:32.11\00:23:33.88 drink, you, 00:23:33.88\00:23:34.64 nor your sons with you, 00:23:34.64\00:23:35.81 when they go 00:23:35.81\00:23:36.31 into the tabernacle 00:23:36.31\00:23:37.38 of the meeting. 00:23:37.38\00:23:38.31 Why? 00:23:38.31\00:23:39.08 Lest you die, 00:23:39.08\00:23:40.42 it shall be a statute forever 00:23:40.42\00:23:42.25 throughout your generations 00:23:42.25\00:23:43.52 that you may distinguish 00:23:43.52\00:23:44.55 between holy and unholy 00:23:44.55\00:23:46.29 and between unclean and clean. 00:23:46.29\00:23:48.56 Now, some critics want to say, 00:23:48.56\00:23:49.99 Well, God is just a terrible 00:23:49.99\00:23:51.36 God If He just 00:23:51.36\00:23:52.09 kill these people. 00:23:52.09\00:23:53.93 Before you attribute 00:23:53.93\00:23:55.13 something to God's 00:23:55.13\00:23:56.20 active judgment, 00:23:56.20\00:23:58.83 just realize this. 00:23:58.83\00:24:00.34 God's very presence 00:24:00.34\00:24:02.64 was in the sanctuary. 00:24:02.64\00:24:04.07 And we're told in the Bible 00:24:04.07\00:24:06.78 that God's 00:24:06.78\00:24:07.58 presence is a consuming fire 00:24:07.58\00:24:10.58 to sin. 00:24:10.65\00:24:11.85 Okay? 00:24:11.85\00:24:13.21 So if you go in God's presence 00:24:13.21\00:24:15.02 and you're holding on to sin, 00:24:15.02\00:24:16.69 it doesn't sound like a 00:24:20.56\00:24:23.56 good conclusion 00:24:23.56\00:24:24.59 is going to come of it right? 00:24:24.59\00:24:27.60 Here's a simple point. 00:24:27.96\00:24:29.76 The simple point 00:24:29.76\00:24:31.67 is these young men 00:24:31.67\00:24:33.97 met their end 00:24:33.97\00:24:35.10 because of something 00:24:35.10\00:24:36.64 being told in society 00:24:36.64\00:24:38.67 is just good, clean fun. 00:24:38.67\00:24:40.84 By the way, 00:24:40.84\00:24:41.44 those of you 00:24:41.44\00:24:41.94 that have been around 00:24:42.01\00:24:42.88 long enough, 00:24:42.88\00:24:43.45 the same type of commercials 00:24:43.55\00:24:45.21 that are used today 00:24:45.21\00:24:46.11 to promote alcoholic beverages 00:24:46.11\00:24:47.95 in the 00:24:47.95\00:24:48.65 into the sixties 00:24:48.65\00:24:50.25 in the United States 00:24:50.25\00:24:51.15 were used to promote what? 00:24:51.15\00:24:52.89 That's right, tobacco 00:24:52.89\00:24:55.06 smoking, okay? 00:24:55.06\00:24:56.69 And finally, 00:24:56.69\00:24:58.46 when all the dots 00:24:58.46\00:24:59.19 are connected, 00:24:59.19\00:24:59.79 you realize where 00:24:59.79\00:25:00.63 all these things go. 00:25:00.63\00:25:01.73 They are really not 00:25:01.73\00:25:02.80 your friends. 00:25:02.80\00:25:04.10 They're not your friends. 00:25:04.10\00:25:05.43 They're undermining your body's 00:25:05.43\00:25:08.37 defenses, 00:25:08.37\00:25:09.27 stress wise 00:25:09.27\00:25:10.51 as well as immune system wise. 00:25:10.51\00:25:12.67 Cares of this life, 00:25:12.67\00:25:14.28 what are they? 00:25:14.28\00:25:15.14 We talked about these 00:25:15.14\00:25:16.31 alcoholic beverages. 00:25:16.31\00:25:17.65 In what ways? 00:25:17.65\00:25:18.61 Just a question for you. 00:25:18.61\00:25:20.22 In what ways 00:25:20.22\00:25:21.05 do you know that you're 00:25:21.05\00:25:22.72 undermining your own health? 00:25:22.72\00:25:24.39 Glad no one's shouting out. 00:25:27.09\00:25:29.49 But we we often we often 00:25:29.49\00:25:31.99 enjoy things that we know 00:25:31.99\00:25:34.10 are harmful to us. 00:25:34.10\00:25:35.10 We see this 00:25:35.10\00:25:36.36 frequently and all the patients 00:25:36.36\00:25:37.90 say, well, you know, 00:25:37.90\00:25:38.63 I know 00:25:38.63\00:25:38.90 I shouldn't be doing this. 00:25:39.27\00:25:40.90 And 00:25:40.90\00:25:42.57 it's true 00:25:42.57\00:25:43.24 with the stress system as well. 00:25:43.24\00:25:45.27 If God's convicting you 00:25:45.27\00:25:46.81 about something, 00:25:46.81\00:25:48.14 is He doing it 00:25:48.14\00:25:48.78 to make your life miserable? 00:25:48.78\00:25:51.41 No, He's 00:25:51.41\00:25:52.18 trying to make things easier. 00:25:52.18\00:25:54.22 The Bible says 00:25:54.22\00:25:55.25 God wants to give you fullness 00:25:55.25\00:25:57.55 of joy 00:25:57.55\00:25:58.95 and pleasures forever more. 00:25:58.95\00:26:00.69 You can read about that 00:26:00.69\00:26:01.56 in Psalm 16. 00:26:01.56\00:26:03.59 So here's my point. 00:26:03.59\00:26:05.19 God is trying to build up 00:26:05.19\00:26:06.63 your general resolve 00:26:06.63\00:26:07.76 by trusting in Him, 00:26:07.76\00:26:08.86 realizing that you're of value 00:26:08.86\00:26:10.87 and that He wants you to care 00:26:10.87\00:26:12.60 for your bodies. 00:26:12.60\00:26:15.97 Lifestyle factors 00:26:18.01\00:26:19.24 surely are powerful 00:26:19.24\00:26:20.58 when it comes to 00:26:20.58\00:26:21.51 our resiliency. 00:26:21.51\00:26:22.74 That's one of the determinants 00:26:22.74\00:26:24.01 of how susceptible 00:26:24.01\00:26:25.51 we are to stress. 00:26:25.51\00:26:27.18 Would you like to learn more?
