Welcome to 00:00:27.96\00:00:28.42 Timeless Healing Insights. 00:00:28.59\00:00:29.59 I'm Dr. David DeRose. 00:00:29.59\00:00:31.59 We are on a journey 00:00:31.59\00:00:33.19 through the gospel of Mark, 00:00:33.19\00:00:34.40 and I know 00:00:34.40\00:00:34.96 you could pick up that gospel 00:00:35.10\00:00:36.30 and read through it 00:00:36.30\00:00:36.83 very quickly. 00:00:36.83\00:00:37.90 But there's a depth, 00:00:37.90\00:00:39.07 there's a power there 00:00:39.07\00:00:40.64 that I believe 00:00:40.64\00:00:41.17 God wants to continue 00:00:41.17\00:00:42.67 to use to heal us 00:00:42.67\00:00:44.44 as we go on this journey. 00:00:44.44\00:00:45.94 Let's pray together. 00:00:45.94\00:00:47.71 Father in Heaven, 00:00:47.71\00:00:48.54 we long for Your healing power 00:00:48.54\00:00:50.45 to be poured out 00:00:50.45\00:00:51.15 through Your Holy Spirit. 00:00:51.15\00:00:52.58 Please, as we open Your word, 00:00:52.58\00:00:54.65 honor 00:00:54.65\00:00:55.35 Your promise 00:00:55.35\00:00:56.55 that Your word 00:00:56.55\00:00:57.32 never returns to You void. 00:00:57.32\00:00:59.15 But it always accomplishes 00:00:59.15\00:01:00.99 Your purpose. 00:01:00.99\00:01:01.79 May it do that in our lives. 00:01:01.79\00:01:03.89 As we engage 00:01:03.89\00:01:04.69 with the Scriptures today 00:01:04.69\00:01:06.16 we ask, In Jesus name, Amen. 00:01:06.16\00:01:08.80 We're walking 00:01:10.80\00:01:12.23 through the Gospel of Mark 00:01:12.23\00:01:14.14 and we're looking at 00:01:14.14\00:01:15.37 an amazing setting. 00:01:15.37\00:01:17.41 Jesus is reestablishing 00:01:17.41\00:01:20.21 His church. 00:01:20.38\00:01:21.44 He's building it on 12 fallible 00:01:21.44\00:01:24.88 creatures. 00:01:24.98\00:01:25.68 In fact, 00:01:25.68\00:01:26.51 if you looked at these 12 00:01:26.51\00:01:28.32 and you read through the list, 00:01:28.32\00:01:29.52 and that's where 00:01:29.52\00:01:29.92 I'm turning in my Bible to Mark 00:01:30.22\00:01:31.72 3, and you look at this 00:01:31.72\00:01:33.49 list of 12 disciples, 00:01:33.49\00:01:35.56 you would realize that there's 00:01:35.56\00:01:37.06 some real problems 00:01:37.06\00:01:38.29 with this group. Okay? 00:01:38.29\00:01:40.66 As you read 00:01:40.66\00:01:41.13 through the Gospels, 00:01:41.13\00:01:42.00 you see that 00:01:42.00\00:01:42.60 one of the problems they had 00:01:42.66\00:01:44.30 is they were arguing 00:01:44.30\00:01:46.20 about who was greatest. 00:01:46.20\00:01:47.20 Mark records it in his gospel, 00:01:47.20\00:01:49.27 and he speaks about it 00:01:49.27\00:01:50.54 in terms of all of them 00:01:50.54\00:01:52.14 being involved. 00:01:52.14\00:01:53.31 So we could say 00:01:53.31\00:01:54.08 it seems that 00:01:54.08\00:01:54.98 on a certain level 00:01:54.98\00:01:55.64 they were all ambitious. 00:01:55.64\00:01:57.11 They're all arguing about who's 00:01:57.11\00:01:58.31 going to be the greatest, 00:01:58.31\00:01:59.58 but it's worse than that. 00:01:59.58\00:02:00.55 Look at this list. 00:02:00.55\00:02:02.15 I know 00:02:02.15\00:02:02.58 this is not a new observation 00:02:02.85\00:02:04.22 for many of you, 00:02:04.22\00:02:04.72 but every time I read 00:02:04.79\00:02:06.12 this list of disciples, 00:02:06.12\00:02:07.29 my mind is kind of swimming. 00:02:07.29\00:02:09.42 Look at this. 00:02:09.42\00:02:10.59 On this list, 00:02:10.59\00:02:11.39 let me just highlight 00:02:11.39\00:02:12.26 two of them. 00:02:12.26\00:02:13.36 Verse 18 of Mark 00:02:13.36\00:02:14.56 3 mentions Matthew by name. 00:02:14.56\00:02:17.33 We know 00:02:17.33\00:02:17.97 Matthew or Levi was a what? 00:02:17.97\00:02:20.97 He was a former tax 00:02:21.30\00:02:22.80 collector, a publican. 00:02:22.80\00:02:24.54 And then you see there's 00:02:24.54\00:02:26.21 a Simon identified there, 00:02:26.21\00:02:27.84 not Simon Peter, 00:02:27.84\00:02:29.38 but at the end of verse 18. 00:02:29.38\00:02:30.78 Simon 00:02:30.78\00:02:31.91 some translations say 00:02:31.91\00:02:33.11 the Canaanite, others 00:02:33.11\00:02:34.58 render it Simon 00:02:34.58\00:02:36.12 more accurately many believe, 00:02:36.12\00:02:37.85 the zealot. 00:02:37.85\00:02:39.95 What was a zealot? 00:02:39.95\00:02:41.39 They were individuals 00:02:42.76\00:02:43.79 that were pledged 00:02:43.79\00:02:45.33 to overthrow 00:02:45.33\00:02:46.33 the occupying Roman power. 00:02:46.33\00:02:48.53 They were killing people like 00:02:49.16\00:02:51.60 soldiers of Rome and publicans. 00:02:51.60\00:02:56.10 How well do you think 00:02:56.57\00:02:57.74 this is sounding like a fit 00:02:57.74\00:03:00.08 in this group of 12? 00:03:00.08\00:03:01.98 I mean, if you just 00:03:01.98\00:03:02.68 look at the, 00:03:02.68\00:03:03.51 we're not going to 00:03:03.51\00:03:03.91 take time to do it. 00:03:04.05\00:03:05.08 But this is a prescription, 00:03:05.08\00:03:07.12 not for unity, 00:03:07.12\00:03:09.98 but for division, it seems. 00:03:10.12\00:03:12.65 But look, look at what 00:03:12.65\00:03:13.82 Jesus is calling them 00:03:13.82\00:03:14.76 to notice the progression 00:03:14.76\00:03:15.89 in Mark 3:14. 00:03:15.89\00:03:17.76 He first calls them 00:03:17.76\00:03:19.49 to be with Him. 00:03:19.49\00:03:21.63 If they're going to all be 00:03:23.53\00:03:24.40 with Jesus, 00:03:24.40\00:03:25.57 they're going to 00:03:25.57\00:03:25.90 all be together. 00:03:26.03\00:03:27.17 And only then 00:03:27.17\00:03:28.97 will they go out healing. 00:03:28.97\00:03:30.71 They must first spend time 00:03:30.71\00:03:32.87 with Jesus 00:03:32.87\00:03:33.94 and spend time together. 00:03:33.94\00:03:37.01 We're talking 00:03:37.01\00:03:37.61 about requirements for healing. 00:03:37.71\00:03:39.68 One of those requirements 00:03:39.95\00:03:41.15 is to come close to Jesus 00:03:41.15\00:03:42.58 to respond to His call. 00:03:42.58\00:03:44.09 But no one responds 00:03:44.09\00:03:45.29 to that call 00:03:45.29\00:03:46.15 unless they recognize 00:03:46.15\00:03:47.32 their own need. Right? 00:03:47.32\00:03:49.16 Lest we realize there's a 00:03:49.16\00:03:50.76 there's a place in our heart 00:03:50.76\00:03:51.79 for Jesus. 00:03:51.79\00:03:52.36 Jesus is inviting us all 00:03:52.36\00:03:53.70 to come to Him. 00:03:53.70\00:03:55.16 And then as we see 00:03:55.33\00:03:56.63 with the disciples, 00:03:56.63\00:03:57.50 He gives them an education 00:03:57.50\00:03:59.30 by being with Him. 00:03:59.30\00:04:01.00 And we'll see later 00:04:01.00\00:04:01.77 as we go through Mark's gospel. 00:04:01.77\00:04:03.34 Then they get an experience 00:04:03.34\00:04:05.47 as guided by Jesus. 00:04:05.47\00:04:07.54 So let's apply this 00:04:07.54\00:04:09.18 now to our personal healing. 00:04:09.18\00:04:10.61 We've talked about 00:04:10.61\00:04:11.25 healing ministry. 00:04:11.25\00:04:12.38 How does this apply to us? 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.38 You're dealing 00:04:14.38\00:04:14.95 with a physical problem. 00:04:14.95\00:04:16.18 You're dealing 00:04:16.18\00:04:16.65 with a spiritual problem. 00:04:16.82\00:04:17.79 It starts the same way. 00:04:17.79\00:04:19.19 First, you have to 00:04:19.19\00:04:19.85 recognize your need. 00:04:19.85\00:04:21.06 I've shared this principle 00:04:22.09\00:04:23.12 with you before, 00:04:23.12\00:04:23.86 but one of the things 00:04:23.86\00:04:24.53 that was drilled into me 00:04:24.53\00:04:25.46 as a young physician 00:04:25.46\00:04:26.90 is when it comes to treatment, 00:04:26.90\00:04:28.96 there is one step 00:04:29.13\00:04:32.03 that has to precede treatment. 00:04:32.03\00:04:34.27 And that step is diagnosis. 00:04:34.77\00:04:37.54 Diagnosis always has to occur 00:04:37.54\00:04:40.31 before treatment. 00:04:40.31\00:04:41.88 Now you might have 00:04:41.88\00:04:42.38 a working diagnosis 00:04:42.38\00:04:44.08 and we say we're treating 00:04:44.08\00:04:44.98 empirically thinking 00:04:44.98\00:04:46.58 maybe that's the problem, 00:04:46.58\00:04:47.75 but you have to 00:04:47.75\00:04:48.35 have a diagnosis 00:04:48.35\00:04:49.55 before you treat. 00:04:49.55\00:04:51.35 If you don't have that, 00:04:51.35\00:04:52.79 you're liable 00:04:52.79\00:04:53.36 to make some terrible mistakes. 00:04:53.49\00:04:54.72 And I've seen it 00:04:54.72\00:04:55.29 as a physician. 00:04:55.29\00:04:57.33 They're often the patients 00:04:57.33\00:04:58.99 that diagnose themselves. 00:04:58.99\00:05:00.90 Okay? 00:05:00.90\00:05:01.96 You know, 00:05:02.53\00:05:02.86 they're having a sense 00:05:03.06\00:05:03.70 of heaviness in their chest 00:05:03.70\00:05:06.13 and they say, 00:05:06.13\00:05:06.87 well this must 00:05:06.87\00:05:07.40 have been something I ate. 00:05:07.50\00:05:09.04 And so they look up heartburn, 00:05:09.04\00:05:11.07 you know, online. 00:05:11.07\00:05:12.47 But they're not 00:05:12.47\00:05:13.11 having heartburn. 00:05:13.11\00:05:13.98 They're having what? 00:05:13.98\00:05:15.48 A heart attack. Okay? 00:05:15.48\00:05:17.55 How many of you think there's 00:05:17.55\00:05:18.48 a different treatment 00:05:18.48\00:05:19.51 for heartburn 00:05:19.51\00:05:20.28 than for a heart attack? 00:05:20.28\00:05:21.92 Yeah. 00:05:21.92\00:05:22.18 You don't need a medical degree 00:05:22.62\00:05:23.22 to figure this out, right? 00:05:23.22\00:05:25.02 So here's the point. 00:05:25.02\00:05:26.12 Diagnosis comes first, 00:05:26.12\00:05:27.36 but you say, 00:05:27.36\00:05:27.86 wait a minute, though. 00:05:27.86\00:05:29.02 Personal healing. 00:05:29.02\00:05:29.96 Yes, yes, yes. 00:05:29.96\00:05:30.79 If I've got a problem, 00:05:30.79\00:05:31.86 I need to be diagnosed. 00:05:31.86\00:05:32.96 But what if I don't 00:05:32.96\00:05:33.80 have a problem yet? 00:05:33.80\00:05:35.23 How many of you think 00:05:35.23\00:05:35.93 it's better 00:05:35.93\00:05:36.40 to avoid problems 00:05:36.40\00:05:37.60 altogether than to have them 00:05:37.60\00:05:39.50 and diagnose them early. 00:05:39.50\00:05:41.10 Which is better, 00:05:41.10\00:05:41.74 to avoid it completely? 00:05:41.74\00:05:44.47 Of course. 00:05:44.47\00:05:45.07 Right? 00:05:45.07\00:05:45.77 By the way, 00:05:45.87\00:05:46.37 if you don't know this 00:05:46.37\00:05:48.58 terminology that we use 00:05:48.58\00:05:49.88 in the preventive medicine 00:05:49.88\00:05:50.91 community, 00:05:50.91\00:05:51.38 I'll share it with you. 00:05:51.48\00:05:52.51 We talk about primary versus 00:05:52.51\00:05:54.52 secondary prevention. 00:05:54.52\00:05:56.52 A lot of the 00:05:56.52\00:05:57.05 preventive activities 00:05:57.05\00:05:58.65 that we talk about 00:05:58.65\00:05:59.69 are really secondary 00:05:59.69\00:06:00.99 prevention. 00:06:00.99\00:06:01.86 Let me tell you about one. 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.59 Just this week 00:06:03.59\00:06:04.59 I was talking with a patient 00:06:04.59\00:06:06.29 and she was telling me, 00:06:06.29\00:06:07.66 I always have a fear 00:06:07.66\00:06:09.00 when I'm recommending 00:06:09.00\00:06:10.10 secondary prevention. 00:06:10.10\00:06:11.27 These are screening tests. 00:06:11.27\00:06:12.87 I always have this fear 00:06:12.87\00:06:13.67 that someone's 00:06:13.67\00:06:14.04 not going to do it. 00:06:14.20\00:06:15.47 And one of the screening tests 00:06:15.54\00:06:17.01 that I often recommend 00:06:17.01\00:06:18.11 that I would say there's 00:06:18.11\00:06:18.91 a high rate of people 00:06:18.91\00:06:20.04 don't follow through with 00:06:20.04\00:06:21.54 is something called 00:06:21.54\00:06:22.31 a colonoscopy. 00:06:22.31\00:06:24.15 Okay? 00:06:24.15\00:06:24.55 I see some of you smiling, 00:06:24.78\00:06:26.15 others of you 00:06:26.15\00:06:26.61 nodding your heads. 00:06:26.68\00:06:27.42 You understand why 00:06:27.42\00:06:28.18 people may not comply 00:06:28.18\00:06:29.45 with that. 00:06:29.45\00:06:30.35 Well, this particular woman 00:06:30.39\00:06:31.72 who I was visiting with 00:06:31.72\00:06:32.65 this week 00:06:32.65\00:06:33.32 had complied 00:06:33.32\00:06:34.16 with the recommendation, 00:06:34.16\00:06:35.42 and I was telling her 00:06:35.42\00:06:36.36 how excited I was 00:06:36.36\00:06:37.69 because on that colonoscopy, 00:06:37.69\00:06:39.36 they removed 00:06:39.36\00:06:40.63 five adenomatous polyps, 00:06:40.63\00:06:43.83 five pre-cancerous polyps. 00:06:43.83\00:06:46.60 And I told her, 00:06:46.94\00:06:47.60 if you hadn't 00:06:47.60\00:06:48.10 had that colonoscopy 00:06:48.10\00:06:49.27 and you just kept 00:06:49.27\00:06:49.97 going on with your life, 00:06:49.97\00:06:51.37 those would over time 00:06:51.37\00:06:53.27 likely have become cancer. 00:06:53.27\00:06:54.94 So that's secondary prevention. 00:06:55.98\00:06:57.95 She already had a problem, 00:06:57.95\00:06:59.38 but they took care of it 00:06:59.38\00:07:00.68 during the screening, okay? 00:07:00.68\00:07:02.75 Primary prevention 00:07:02.75\00:07:04.05 is you prevent the problem 00:07:04.05\00:07:05.15 from ever occurring. 00:07:05.15\00:07:06.59 You never get the polyps 00:07:06.59\00:07:07.66 even in the first place. 00:07:07.66\00:07:10.79 So we all agree 00:07:10.79\00:07:11.59 primary prevention is best. 00:07:11.59\00:07:14.00 With that in mind, 00:07:14.00\00:07:14.63 I want to tell you a story, 00:07:14.63\00:07:16.93 and the story has to do 00:07:17.63\00:07:19.07 with Jesus Himself, 00:07:19.07\00:07:20.34 because this is 00:07:20.34\00:07:21.04 the big challenge for us. 00:07:21.04\00:07:22.47 If you don't have 00:07:22.47\00:07:23.34 a problem already, 00:07:23.34\00:07:24.24 why would you change anything? 00:07:24.24\00:07:26.24 I've even had physicians 00:07:26.24\00:07:27.31 tell me. 00:07:27.31\00:07:27.88 Well, I know 00:07:27.88\00:07:28.34 that's a better way to live, 00:07:28.54\00:07:30.11 but if I have a problem, 00:07:30.11\00:07:31.35 then I'll change my lifestyle. 00:07:31.35\00:07:33.25 Well, sometimes 00:07:33.25\00:07:33.98 that?oo late. 00:11:49.07\00:11:50.87 The new York Times story 00:11:51.14\00:11:53.71 actually chronicled his last 00:11:54.04\00:11:56.14 phone call to his mother. 00:11:56.34\00:12:00.15 Patrick is 32 at the time, 00:12:01.55\00:12:04.22 and as his mother 00:12:04.22\00:12:05.49 hears him 00:12:05.49\00:12:06.39 talking, his his affect, 00:12:06.39\00:12:08.62 his communication 00:12:08.62\00:12:10.33 is totally flat. 00:12:10.33\00:12:11.26 There's no emotion there. 00:12:11.26\00:12:13.53 And he says, I'm 00:12:13.56\00:12:14.36 standing on a ladder 00:12:14.36\00:12:17.07 with his dog's 00:12:17.07\00:12:18.03 leash around his neck 00:12:18.03\00:12:21.04 and his mother's, you know, 00:12:21.07\00:12:23.10 pleading with him. 00:12:23.10\00:12:24.07 You know, 00:12:24.07\00:12:24.57 think about all the 00:12:24.57\00:12:25.37 good things in life. 00:12:25.37\00:12:26.57 I mean, she was I mean, what is 00:12:26.57\00:12:27.94 is he really 00:12:27.94\00:12:28.78 I mean, he just 00:12:28.78\00:12:29.81 kind of like 00:12:29.88\00:12:30.31 matter of fact saying 00:12:30.45\00:12:31.38 this is he really talking about 00:12:31.38\00:12:33.48 taking his life? 00:13:22.63\00:13:23.73 Now, now, before you jump to 00:13:24.70\00:13:26.03 do an answer, 00:13:26.03\00:13:26.94 I will tell you, 00:13:26.94\00:13:27.57 I've read a lot of 00:13:27.57\00:13:28.74 medical studies on this 00:13:28.74\00:13:30.01 looking at athletes. 00:13:30.01\00:13:31.21 And years ago, they asked elite 00:13:31.21\00:13:34.04 athletes, would you take a drug 00:13:34.04\00:13:36.51 if you knew 00:13:37.05\00:13:37.61 it would not be detected 00:13:37.61\00:13:39.41 and it would help 00:13:39.41\00:13:40.08 you win the Olympics 00:13:40.08\00:13:41.25 even if it killed you 00:13:41.25\00:13:42.22 in like five years? 00:13:42.22\00:13:44.15 And a shocking, 00:13:44.15\00:13:45.65 shockingly high 00:13:45.65\00:13:46.92 percentage of athletes 00:13:46.92\00:13:48.02 said they would do it. 00:13:48.02\00:13:49.39 Okay? 00:14:00.97\00:14:01.74 But I'm just saying, 00:14:01.84\00:14:03.07 prevention is better than cure. 00:14:03.07\00:14:04.47 But once 00:14:04.47\00:14:05.34 Patrick has the condition, it's 00:14:05.34\00:14:08.04 not something that's 00:14:08.04\00:14:08.88 felt to be reversible. 00:14:08.88\00:14:10.15 Now, let me ask the 00:14:11.55\00:14:12.21 question another way. 00:14:12.21\00:14:14.22 There are literally millions 00:14:14.28\00:14:15.65 of people 00:14:15.65\00:14:16.15 who've walked on planet Earth 00:14:16.35\00:14:17.42 who have died from lung cancer 00:14:17.42\00:14:19.39 because of cigarette smoking. 00:14:19.39\00:14:21.46 How many people do you think 00:14:21.46\00:14:22.59 start smoking 00:14:22.59\00:14:23.36 saying, well, I'm smoking 00:14:23.36\00:14:24.73 because I want to die of lung 00:14:24.73\00:14:25.63 cancer one day. 00:14:25.63\00:14:27.20 What are they thinking? 00:14:27.46\00:14:29.06 Not going to happen 00:14:29.40\00:14:30.03 to me, right? 00:14:30.03\00:14:31.13 I mean, it doesn't happen 00:14:31.37\00:14:32.43 to everyone. 00:14:32.43\00:14:32.93 You know, 00:14:32.93\00:14:33.13 grandpa lived to be 99 00:14:33.47\00:14:34.97 and he smoked 00:14:34.97\00:14:35.64 the whole time and, 00:14:35.64\00:14:36.64 you know, got hit by a car 00:14:36.64\00:14:37.74 while he was jogging. 00:14:37.74\00:14:38.87 Okay, that's not my grandpa. 00:14:38.87\00:14:40.21 But, you know, 00:14:40.21\00:14:40.58 you've heard those stories, 00:14:40.88\00:14:41.71 right? Okay? 00:14:41.71\00:14:42.98 So it doesn't matter what I do. 00:14:42.98\00:14:45.31 What about 00:14:45.65\00:14:46.61 the millions of people 00:14:46.61\00:14:48.38 who've had cirrhosis 00:14:48.38\00:14:49.88 of the liver? 00:14:49.88\00:14:50.82 By the way, 00:14:50.82\00:14:51.25 you can't live without a liver 00:14:51.49\00:14:53.25 and cirrhosis a bad disease. 00:14:53.25\00:14:56.09 I've had a lot of patients 00:14:56.09\00:14:56.99 who've dealt with it. 00:14:56.99\00:14:57.89 It can go on to 00:14:57.89\00:14:58.63 to liver cancer. 00:14:58.63\00:14:59.86 You die 00:14:59.86\00:15:00.36 just from the cirrhosis. 00:15:00.53\00:15:01.36 You get something called 00:15:01.36\00:15:02.10 hepatic encephalopathy. 00:15:02.10\00:15:03.60 The liver isn't cleansing 00:15:03.60\00:15:05.17 the blood appropriately and 00:15:05.17\00:15:06.57 it's bad. 00:15:07.64\00:15:08.67 Okay? 00:15:08.67\00:15:09.70 But how 00:15:09.97\00:15:10.67 do you think 00:15:10.67\00:15:11.07 some of them wouldn't 00:15:11.24\00:15:11.97 have taken that first drink 00:15:11.97\00:15:13.94 if they knew 00:15:13.94\00:15:14.88 they were going to end up 00:15:14.88\00:15:15.51 with cirrhosis, 00:15:15.51\00:15:16.38 maybe even at a young age 00:15:16.38\00:15:17.91 or lung cancer in the case 00:15:17.91\00:15:19.25 of smoking at a young age. 00:15:19.25\00:15:21.38 I think the youngest patient 00:15:21.38\00:15:22.48 I've had that died from lung 00:15:22.48\00:15:23.65 cancer linked to smoking 00:15:23.65\00:15:24.75 was in his thirties. 00:15:24.75\00:15:26.65 It?ot just something 00:15:26.65\00:15:27.42 that happens 00:15:27.42\00:15:27.96 when you're 60 or 70. 00:15:27.96\00:15:30.39 So 00:15:30.39\00:15:31.13 what does it mean 00:15:31.86\00:15:32.76 when we talk about 00:15:32.76\00:15:33.40 cooperating with God? 00:15:33.40\00:15:35.03 Well, my point is simply this. 00:15:35.03\00:15:36.53 I don't know what 00:15:36.53\00:15:37.47 any of these individuals 00:15:37.47\00:15:38.47 should do. 00:15:38.47\00:15:39.33 I don't know 00:15:39.33\00:15:39.73 what would Patrick's 00:15:39.87\00:15:40.87 life would have been like. 00:15:40.87\00:15:41.90 And for all I know, he was a 00:15:41.90\00:15:44.77 asking God to guide his life. 00:15:44.77\00:15:46.54 So it's not to judge 00:15:46.54\00:15:47.88 any of these people, 00:15:47.88\00:15:48.91 but it's just to say 00:15:48.91\00:15:50.48 that I believe 00:15:50.48\00:15:51.08 God wants 00:15:51.08\00:15:51.58 to individually guide you. 00:15:51.71\00:15:54.28 And the way it starts, 00:15:54.28\00:15:56.35 the way it starts 00:15:56.35\00:15:57.02 is He convicts you about things 00:15:57.02\00:15:59.22 and He asks you to respond 00:15:59.52\00:16:00.89 to that conviction. 00:16:00.89\00:16:01.89 Now, having said that, 00:16:02.99\00:16:04.93 Mark 3 00:16:04.93\00:16:06.29 continues 00:16:06.29\00:16:06.93 with two additional stories. 00:16:06.93\00:16:08.60 And they're very interesting 00:16:08.60\00:16:10.20 in the context 00:16:10.20\00:16:10.93 that we're looking at. 00:16:10.93\00:16:11.77 Remember, 00:16:11.77\00:16:12.27 Jesus has just called 00:16:12.33\00:16:14.07 the 12 disciples. 00:16:14.07\00:16:15.40 What happens right after that? 00:16:15.40\00:16:17.91 Right 00:16:17.91\00:16:18.31 after the calling of the 12. 00:16:18.57\00:16:19.94 We read this vignette. 00:16:19.94\00:16:22.01 It says The multitude 00:16:22.34\00:16:23.75 comes together again. 00:16:23.75\00:16:25.18 They're flocking around Jesus. 00:16:25.18\00:16:27.25 So many 00:16:27.25\00:16:28.02 that Jesus couldn't even eat. 00:16:28.02\00:16:32.09 And when His own 00:16:32.09\00:16:33.46 people heard about it, 00:16:33.46\00:16:35.36 they're determined to grab 00:16:35.36\00:16:36.99 Jesus 00:16:36.99\00:16:37.46 and get Him out of 00:16:37.46\00:16:37.96 the environment, for 00:16:37.96\00:16:38.79 they say He's out of His mind. 00:16:38.79\00:16:41.00 Now, who are His own people? 00:16:41.00\00:16:42.23 We're going to answer 00:16:42.23\00:16:42.80 that question in just a moment. 00:16:42.93\00:16:44.17 But I've got to tell you, 00:16:44.17\00:16:44.97 this hits close to home. 00:16:44.97\00:16:46.37 Years ago, 00:16:46.37\00:16:47.64 as a young college student, 00:16:47.64\00:16:49.20 the Holy Spirit was getting 00:16:49.20\00:16:50.31 my attention 00:16:50.31\00:16:51.07 and I was reading the Bible 00:16:51.07\00:16:52.87 and I was learning about 00:16:52.87\00:16:54.08 what God wanted me to do 00:16:54.08\00:16:55.78 as far as my own health. 00:16:55.78\00:16:57.21 And I believe that 00:16:57.21\00:16:58.05 God was asking me 00:16:58.05\00:16:58.98 to get away from 00:16:58.98\00:17:00.65 a lot of the foods 00:17:00.65\00:17:01.58 that I was eating, 00:17:01.58\00:17:02.35 you know, 00:17:02.35\00:17:02.55 heavy sugar diet and heavy 00:17:02.98\00:17:04.62 animal product diet. 00:17:04.65\00:17:06.39 And I was going to become 00:17:06.39\00:17:08.06 a vegetarian. In fact, I had. 00:17:08.06\00:17:10.29 And I noticed something 00:17:10.33\00:17:11.56 interesting happen with 00:17:11.56\00:17:12.83 my mother's recipes. 00:17:12.83\00:17:14.20 Her recipes changed. 00:17:15.73\00:17:18.17 At the time, 00:17:18.17\00:17:18.40 at first 00:17:18.50\00:17:18.57 I was a lacto ovo vegetarian. 00:17:19.20\00:17:20.87 She used to make something 00:17:20.87\00:17:21.84 called french toast 00:17:21.84\00:17:23.54 and she would put some egg 00:17:23.54\00:17:24.74 in this. 00:17:24.74\00:17:25.71 Well, 00:17:25.71\00:17:25.87 I noticed the french toast 00:17:26.34\00:17:27.34 recipe changed. 00:17:27.34\00:17:28.98 And now 00:17:28.98\00:17:29.31 maybe instead of one egg 00:17:29.58\00:17:30.45 in the batch, 00:17:30.45\00:17:30.88 it seemed like there were four. 00:17:31.15\00:17:31.85 It was more like 00:17:31.85\00:17:32.35 a bread omelet. 00:17:32.35\00:17:33.28 Okay? 00:17:33.28\00:17:33.88 Because she was so worried 00:17:33.88\00:17:35.32 I wasn't getting enough 00:17:35.32\00:17:36.22 nutrition. 00:17:36.22\00:17:37.35 Now, so 00:17:37.35\00:17:37.99 this is understandable, right? 00:17:37.99\00:17:39.59 If your family thinks 00:17:39.59\00:17:40.69 you're making bad decisions, 00:17:40.69\00:17:42.46 they're going to 00:17:42.46\00:17:42.76 try to intervene. 00:17:42.96\00:17:43.79 And we'll look more at this 00:17:43.79\00:17:45.36 in a moment. 00:17:45.36\00:17:45.96 But there is 00:17:45.96\00:17:46.43 something that happens after 00:17:46.63\00:17:47.73 we were introduced to the worry 00:17:47.73\00:17:49.03 about Jesus?mily. 00:17:49.03\00:17:49.90 And what are they saying 00:17:49.90\00:17:50.57 of Jesus? 00:17:50.57\00:17:51.47 Are they saying 00:17:51.47\00:17:52.13 Jesus is the Messiah? 00:17:52.13\00:17:53.47 He's fulfilling Daniel 9. 00:17:53.47\00:17:54.87 Is that what they're saying? 00:17:54.87\00:17:56.27 They're saying He's crazy. 00:17:56.27\00:17:57.31 Okay? He's crazy. 00:17:57.31\00:17:59.41 Here's what 00:18:01.81\00:18:02.21 interrupts that story. 00:18:02.34\00:18:03.18 It 00:18:03.18\00:18:03.78 says in verse 22 00:18:04.91\00:18:06.85 The Bible tells us 00:18:06.85\00:18:08.28 the scribes 00:18:08.28\00:18:09.42 come down from Jerusalem 00:18:09.42\00:18:11.29 and they start accusing Jesus. 00:18:11.29\00:18:13.32 He has Beelzebub 00:18:13.52\00:18:15.99 by the ruler of the demons 00:18:15.99\00:18:18.06 He casts out. 00:18:18.06\00:18:19.09 He's casting out demons. 00:18:19.09\00:18:21.16 Beelzebub, 00:18:21.16\00:18:21.90 literally, is the 00:18:21.90\00:18:22.80 lord of the Flies. 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.27 It was a 00:18:25.27\00:18:26.74 derogatory name 00:18:26.74\00:18:28.10 it seems, for Satan. 00:18:28.10\00:18:29.90 They're saying 00:18:29.90\00:18:30.54 Jesus by the power of Satan 00:18:30.54\00:18:32.81 is doing these miracles. 00:18:32.81\00:18:34.14 Now, wait a minute. Wait. 00:18:34.14\00:18:35.71 We already saw 00:18:35.71\00:18:36.51 things were not looking good up 00:18:36.51\00:18:38.35 to the time 00:18:38.35\00:18:38.85 He calls His disciples. 00:18:38.91\00:18:39.95 If you had any doubts, 00:18:39.95\00:18:41.25 if Jesus needed 00:18:41.25\00:18:43.28 a new nucleus upon 00:18:43.28\00:18:44.72 which to build the church, 00:18:44.72\00:18:45.99 maybe this is removing 00:18:45.99\00:18:47.09 some doubts. 00:18:47.09\00:18:48.56 But something 00:18:48.56\00:18:49.16 very interesting happens. 00:18:49.16\00:18:51.56 Jesus, it 00:18:51.56\00:18:52.19 says, answers with parables. 00:18:52.19\00:18:54.86 And you often, as you read Mark 00:18:55.36\00:18:56.63 3, most people 00:18:56.63\00:18:57.53 don't think of this 00:18:57.53\00:18:58.37 being a parable, but 00:18:58.37\00:18:59.27 Mark says it's a parable. 00:18:59.27\00:19:00.64 Some of you 00:19:02.27\00:19:03.10 may have seen 00:19:03.10\00:19:03.67 this classic definition. 00:19:03.67\00:19:05.04 You can just put it in 00:19:05.04\00:19:06.31 Google or something. 00:19:06.31\00:19:07.28 You'll find, 00:19:07.28\00:19:08.01 you know, 00:19:08.01\00:19:08.24 hundreds of people 00:19:08.51\00:19:09.08 refer to this. 00:19:09.08\00:19:10.88 C.H. 00:19:11.05\00:19:11.31 Dodd, a 00:19:11.31\00:19:11.95 scholar of yesteryear wrote 00:19:11.95\00:19:13.68 a book called 00:19:13.68\00:19:14.15 The Parables of the Kingdom, 00:19:14.35\00:19:15.42 and this is kind of 00:19:15.42\00:19:15.88 a classic definition 00:19:15.95\00:19:17.65 of parables. 00:19:17.65\00:19:18.72 Let me read it for you. 00:19:18.72\00:19:19.89 At its simplest, 00:19:19.89\00:19:21.09 the parable is a metaphor 00:19:21.09\00:19:22.79 or simile drawn 00:19:22.79\00:19:24.29 from nature or common life, 00:19:24.29\00:19:26.23 arresting the hearer 00:19:26.23\00:19:27.66 by its vividness 00:19:27.66\00:19:29.66 or strangeness, 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.57 and leaving 00:19:31.57\00:19:32.10 the mind in sufficient doubt 00:19:32.23\00:19:33.87 to its precise application 00:19:33.87\00:19:36.10 to tease the mind 00:19:36.10\00:19:37.94 into active thought. 00:19:37.94\00:19:39.91 So what is this parable 00:19:39.91\00:19:41.18 that Jesus employs? 00:19:41.18\00:19:42.58 Well, there's 00:19:42.58\00:19:42.84 several aspects to it. 00:19:43.11\00:19:44.28 But when He's speaking 00:19:44.28\00:19:45.15 to these religious leaders, 00:19:45.15\00:19:46.75 He calls them and He says this. 00:19:46.75\00:19:48.35 How can Satan cast out Satan? 00:19:48.35\00:19:50.89 If a kingdom is divided 00:19:51.05\00:19:52.19 against itself, 00:19:52.19\00:19:53.39 that kingdom cannot stand. 00:19:53.39\00:19:55.46 And then He gives this picture, 00:19:55.46\00:19:56.76 this word picture. 00:19:56.76\00:19:57.96 No one can enter 00:19:57.96\00:19:59.36 a strong man's house 00:19:59.36\00:20:00.60 and plunder 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.56 his goods unless he does what? 00:20:02.56\00:20:04.90 That's right. 00:20:06.00\00:20:06.50 Unless he first 00:20:06.50\00:20:07.37 binds the strong man. 00:20:07.37\00:20:09.50 And then he will 00:20:09.50\00:20:10.07 plunder his house. 00:20:10.07\00:20:11.14 What is Jesus 00:20:11.14\00:20:11.94 trying to engage them with? 00:20:11.94\00:20:13.44 He's trying to help them 00:20:13.44\00:20:14.31 to see 00:20:14.31\00:20:15.31 that Satan's kingdom 00:20:15.31\00:20:16.78 can't be attacking itself. 00:20:16.78\00:20:18.11 He's not working 00:20:18.11\00:20:19.48 miracles by the power of Satan. 00:20:19.48\00:20:22.18 But then He turns 00:20:22.18\00:20:23.49 the discussion 00:20:23.49\00:20:24.25 to this very important point. 00:20:24.25\00:20:26.02 We have to touch on this 00:20:26.02\00:20:27.59 because some of you, 00:20:27.59\00:20:28.49 if you haven't 00:20:28.49\00:20:29.02 been worried about this, 00:20:29.09\00:20:29.92 you may be 00:20:29.92\00:20:30.56 and you shouldn't be. 00:20:30.56\00:20:32.39 Verses 28 and onward. 00:20:33.40\00:20:34.96 Assuredly, I say to you, 00:20:34.96\00:20:36.70 all sins 00:20:36.70\00:20:37.67 will be forgiven 00:20:37.67\00:20:38.40 the sons of men and whatever 00:20:38.40\00:20:40.47 blasphemies they may utter. 00:20:40.60\00:20:42.27 Let's just stop right there. 00:20:42.27\00:20:43.97 What kind of sin 00:20:43.97\00:20:46.31 can you commit that 00:20:46.31\00:20:47.24 God will not forgive? 00:20:47.24\00:20:50.18 I mean, it says here there are 00:20:51.41\00:20:53.35 other translations 00:20:53.35\00:20:54.22 say all manner of sin. 00:20:54.22\00:20:55.85 Okay? Okay? 00:22:58.64\00:23:00.78 Get the picture, remember? 00:23:00.78\00:23:02.14 So 00:23:02.14\00:23:02.81 Jesus has called the 12. 00:23:03.68\00:23:06.01 Special intimate relationship. 00:23:06.01\00:23:08.02 They're going to follow Him. 00:23:08.02\00:23:08.98 They're going to be with Him. 00:23:08.98\00:23:09.95 He's going to equip them 00:23:09.95\00:23:10.92 to do healing ministry. 00:23:10.92\00:23:12.25 And He is healing them 00:23:12.25\00:23:13.42 spiritually. 00:23:13.42\00:23:14.02 He's healing them socially 00:23:14.02\00:23:15.52 as they fellowship with Him. 00:23:15.52\00:23:17.13 But now what we see, 00:23:17.13\00:23:18.33 those around Him 00:23:18.33\00:23:19.29 are not always 00:23:19.29\00:23:20.00 welcoming His ministry. 00:23:20.00\00:23:22.13 Even His family 00:23:22.13\00:23:23.30 now, they come 00:23:23.30\00:23:24.90 to try to take care of Jesus. 00:23:24.90\00:23:27.07 And the message comes to Jesus. 00:23:27.27\00:23:29.37 Look, your mother 00:23:29.37\00:23:31.07 and your brothers are outside 00:23:31.07\00:23:32.41 looking for you. 00:23:32.41\00:23:33.54 What is Jesus?sponse? 00:23:33.54\00:23:35.11 It is a shocking response. 00:23:35.11\00:23:36.38 I know you've read the gospel, 00:23:36.38\00:23:37.51 most of you, but it's shocking, 00:23:37.51\00:23:39.25 especially in that culture. 00:23:39.25\00:23:41.28 Your mother's here for you. 00:23:41.28\00:23:42.62 What would I do 00:23:42.62\00:23:43.39 if you said your mother's here? 00:23:43.39\00:23:44.45 She's out in the lobby Dr. 00:23:44.45\00:23:46.42 DeRose, waiting for you. 00:23:46.42\00:23:47.29 I mean, 00:23:47.29\00:23:47.49 I might be even tempted to say, 00:23:47.99\00:23:48.56 well, wait lets, 00:23:48.56\00:23:49.22 you know, 00:23:49.22\00:23:49.52 put things on hold, and, 00:23:49.82\00:23:50.76 you know, 00:23:50.76\00:23:50.96 my mom's in the lobby. 00:23:51.29\00:23:51.86 Why isn't she coming in? 00:23:51.86\00:23:52.79 Is she okay? But 00:23:52.79\00:23:54.20 hopefully I would 00:23:55.13\00:23:55.73 follow Jesus?ample, 00:23:55.73\00:23:56.97 just for the record. 00:23:56.97\00:23:58.27 Jesus is ministering 00:23:58.27\00:23:59.60 and what He says is this. 00:23:59.60\00:24:01.87 Who is My mother 00:24:02.40\00:24:03.67 or My brothers? 00:24:03.67\00:24:04.97 And He looks around the circle 00:24:04.97\00:24:07.08 at those around Him, 00:24:07.08\00:24:08.18 presumably 00:24:08.18\00:24:08.88 not just His disciples, 00:24:08.88\00:24:10.25 but others, 00:24:10.25\00:24:10.98 not just the 12, 00:24:10.98\00:24:11.85 but other disciples, 00:24:11.85\00:24:12.78 other followers of His. 00:24:12.78\00:24:14.25 And He says 00:24:14.25\00:24:14.85 here are My mother 00:24:14.85\00:24:16.85 and My brothers. 00:24:16.85\00:24:18.32 For whoever does 00:24:18.32\00:24:19.42 the will of God 00:24:19.42\00:24:20.42 is My brother 00:24:20.42\00:24:21.66 and My sister and mother. 00:24:21.66\00:24:23.93 Now, if you're not catching 00:24:25.03\00:24:26.16 the profound 00:24:26.16\00:24:26.86 implications of this, 00:24:26.86\00:24:28.33 Jesus is inviting you 00:24:28.33\00:24:30.03 to be His follower 00:24:30.03\00:24:30.70 and be a part of this family. 00:24:30.70\00:24:32.33 Okay? 00:24:32.33\00:24:33.40 Just like the 12. 00:24:34.00\00:24:34.94 You say, but I don't fit in. 00:24:34.94\00:24:35.90 The 12 didn't fit in. 00:24:35.90\00:24:37.71 None of those guys 00:24:37.71\00:24:38.54 fit in together. 00:24:38.54\00:24:39.47 Note the context. 00:24:40.94\00:24:43.28 It's not to spend time 00:24:43.28\00:24:44.85 with Jesus alone. 00:24:44.85\00:24:46.61 That's important. 00:24:46.61\00:24:47.68 It's critical. 00:24:47.68\00:24:48.55 We saw that earlier 00:24:48.55\00:24:49.48 in this series. 00:24:49.48\00:24:50.49 But it's to spend time 00:24:50.49\00:24:51.62 with Jesus in community. 00:24:51.62\00:24:54.16 Jesus, yes, 00:24:54.79\00:24:56.12 called the 00:24:56.12\00:24:56.62 disciples individually. 00:24:56.69\00:24:58.33 But then He calls them 00:24:58.33\00:25:00.26 as a body of believers. 00:25:00.26\00:25:02.30 Now, I hope you realize that 00:25:02.70\00:25:04.03 social connectedness 00:25:04.03\00:25:06.03 transcends bloodlines. 00:25:06.03\00:25:07.60 Okay? 00:25:07.60\00:25:08.44 In every family though, 00:25:08.44\00:25:10.14 there are expectations. 00:25:10.14\00:25:12.07 And I hope you realize 00:25:12.07\00:25:13.14 that as well. 00:25:13.14\00:25:14.98 And I want to draw 00:25:14.98\00:25:15.71 your attention 00:25:15.71\00:25:16.31 to something again, 00:25:16.31\00:25:17.51 a medical illustration. 00:25:17.51\00:25:19.65 You know, people can go through 00:25:19.65\00:25:21.15 all the training 00:25:21.15\00:25:21.95 they want 00:25:21.95\00:25:22.95 to become a nurse or a doctor, 00:25:22.95\00:25:25.12 physical therapist, 00:25:25.12\00:25:27.26 speech pathologist, 00:25:27.26\00:25:30.53 cytotechnologist, okay? 00:25:30.53\00:25:32.53 Respiratory therapist. 00:25:33.23\00:25:34.46 So we don't have 00:25:34.46\00:25:35.26 to go down the whole list. 00:25:35.26\00:25:36.33 Okay. 00:25:36.33\00:25:36.63 Everyone that works 00:25:36.87\00:25:37.33 in the health care community. 00:25:37.57\00:25:39.10 But every place 00:25:39.10\00:25:40.14 where I've worked 00:25:40.14\00:25:40.70 is a credentialing process 00:25:40.77\00:25:42.54 and a re-credentialing process. 00:25:42.54\00:25:44.61 So it's not just enough 00:25:44.97\00:25:47.04 to have the training. 00:25:47.04\00:25:48.44 It's not just enough to 00:25:48.44\00:25:50.01 to respond to the call 00:25:50.01\00:25:52.25 to get the education, 00:25:52.25\00:25:54.18 but then you have 00:25:54.18\00:25:55.02 to be committed 00:25:55.02\00:25:56.48 to working as part of the team. 00:25:56.48\00:25:58.59 Do you know there are stories 00:25:59.25\00:25:59.92 about rogue 00:25:59.92\00:26:00.66 health professionals 00:26:00.66\00:26:01.69 that have even taken 00:26:01.69\00:26:03.02 the lives of their patients? 00:26:03.02\00:26:04.29 You've heard stories 00:26:04.29\00:26:04.93 about that, right? 00:26:04.93\00:26:07.13 How does that happen? 00:26:07.13\00:26:08.20 It happens because 00:26:09.36\00:26:10.27 what, they don't recognize, 00:26:10.27\00:26:12.30 they're part 00:26:12.30\00:26:13.10 of a healing community. 00:26:13.10\00:26:14.34 The only reason they're there 00:26:14.34\00:26:16.34 is to work together 00:26:17.17\00:26:18.27 in ministry. 00:26:18.27\00:26:19.61 I want to tell you, 00:26:19.61\00:26:21.28 Jesus is giving 00:26:21.28\00:26:22.51 a profound call in Mark 3. 00:26:22.51\00:26:24.58 He's telling you 00:26:24.58\00:26:27.48 calling you 00:26:27.48\00:26:28.52 to be one of His followers. 00:26:28.52\00:26:30.09 He offers you forgiveness 00:26:30.09\00:26:31.39 for whatever you've done. 00:26:31.39\00:26:32.82 He offers you 00:26:32.82\00:26:33.42 to be part of His family. 00:26:33.42\00:26:35.39 But then He says, Press 00:26:35.39\00:26:36.56 together, work together, 00:26:36.56\00:26:38.59 come close together, 00:26:38.83\00:26:40.33 and He will work 00:26:40.33\00:26:41.50 His Ministry of Healing, 00:26:41.50\00:26:43.70 not just through 00:26:43.70\00:26:44.30 you individually, 00:26:44.30\00:26:45.50 but through His church, 00:26:45.50\00:26:46.70 collectively. 00:26:46.70\00:26:47.80 Jesus is the great physician. 00:26:50.61\00:26:52.84 He's not only the 00:26:53.27\00:26:53.98 master healer, 00:26:53.98\00:26:55.24 but He is also 00:26:55.24\00:26:56.01 the master diagnostician. 00:26:56.01\00:26:58.35 Ask Jesus to show you 00:26:58.81\00:27:00.38 what needs to be different 00:27:00.38\00:27:01.52 in your life. 00:27:01.52\00:27:02.42 And the beautiful thing 00:27:02.42\00:27:03.28 about Jesus?idance 00:27:03.28\00:27:05.02 is He'll never show you 00:27:05.02\00:27:06.69 anything 00:27:06.69\00:27:07.09 that needs to 00:27:07.09\00:27:07.52 change in your life 00:27:07.62\00:27:08.96 unless He is fully committed 00:27:08.96\00:27:11.09 to giving you the power 00:27:11.39\00:27:13.09 to make that change. 00:27:13.09\00:27:14.73 That's one of the things that 00:27:14.73\00:27:15.96 encourages me as a physician. 00:27:15.96\00:27:17.83 And if you haven't 00:27:17.83\00:27:18.67 checked it out yet, 00:27:18.67\00:27:19.90 visit 00:27:19.90\00:27:20.37 our website 00:27:20.37\00:27:21.24 at TimelessHealingInsights.org 00:27:21.24\00:27:23.91 There we have a full 30 day 00:27:24.24\00:27:26.44 lifestyle program, 00:27:26.44\00:27:27.94 Life changing program 00:27:27.94\00:27:29.24 in 6 minutes a day, roughly 00:27:29.24\00:27:31.38 short videos, 00:27:31.65\00:27:33.21 health videos 00:27:33.21\00:27:34.68 that give you insights 00:27:34.68\00:27:35.85 into things 00:27:35.85\00:27:36.52 that well, God 00:27:36.52\00:27:37.62 may be calling you to change 00:27:37.62\00:27:40.09 and to give you the power 00:27:40.09\00:27:41.06 to do it.
