00:02:02.85\00:02:04.55 Now, maybe to you today. 00:02:04.55\00:02:05.75 That sounds kind of cool. 00:02:05.75\00:02:06.99 Okay, You say, 00:02:06.99\00:02:07.89 I wish the kids would call me 00:02:07.89\00:02:09.06 that at school. 00:02:09.06\00:02:09.72 Call me Son of Thunder. 00:02:09.72\00:02:11.79 It sounds kind of powerful, 00:02:11.79\00:02:12.99 doesn't it? 00:02:12.99\00:02:13.96 I don't know. 00:02:14.30\00:02:15.06 Yeah, I think so. 00:02:15.06\00:02:16.53 But back then, 00:02:16.53\00:02:17.37 I mean, Jesus called them 00:02:17.37\00:02:18.33 Sons of Thunder, 00:02:18.33\00:02:19.10 it seems, because. 00:02:19.10\00:02:20.20 Well, of some less than 00:02:21.40\00:02:22.50 desirable traits of character. 00:02:22.50\00:02:24.51 Let's take a look 00:02:24.51\00:02:25.71 at what the account tells us. 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.64 In Luke chapter nine, 00:02:27.64\00:02:29.04 we read about John's 00:02:29.04\00:02:30.51 fiery temper. 00:02:30.51\00:02:34.42 Let's take a listen. 00:02:34.55\00:02:35.55 John says, Master, 00:02:35.55\00:02:37.79 we saw someone casting out 00:02:37.79\00:02:39.45 demons in your name 00:02:39.45\00:02:40.46 and we tried to stop him 00:02:40.46\00:02:42.89 because he doesn't follow 00:02:42.89\00:02:44.03 with us. 00:02:44.03\00:02:45.16 And Jesus says, Don't stop him. 00:02:45.46\00:02:48.10 For the one 00:02:48.46\00:02:49.00 who's not against you 00:02:49.00\00:02:50.53 is what is for you? 00:02:50.53\00:02:53.50 Well, 00:02:54.47\00:02:55.37 you say that's pretty mild. 00:02:55.44\00:02:57.01 Pastor DeRose. 00:02:57.01\00:02:58.94 No. Now keep reading. 00:02:58.94\00:03:00.64 Keep reading through, Luke. 00:03:00.64\00:03:02.64 Here's the next story 00:03:02.64\00:03:03.85 right on the heels of that one. 00:03:03.85\00:03:05.78 It came to pass 00:03:05.78\00:03:06.85 when the time had come 00:03:06.85\00:03:07.75 for Jesus to be received up. 00:03:07.75\00:03:09.32 Jesus knows 00:03:09.32\00:03:10.52 the cross is just before Him. 00:03:10.52\00:03:12.39 He's headed back to Jerusalem 00:03:12.39\00:03:14.89 and it says 00:03:14.89\00:03:15.86 He is going through Samaria. 00:03:15.86\00:03:17.76 The Samaritans pick 00:03:17.76\00:03:19.13 up on this and 00:03:19.13\00:03:21.20 well, it says they didn't 00:03:22.53\00:03:25.33 receive Him 00:03:25.33\00:03:26.90 because His face was set 00:03:26.90\00:03:29.00 for Jerusalem. 00:03:29.00\00:03:29.84 In other words, 00:03:29.84\00:03:30.57 Jesus just needed a place 00:03:30.57\00:03:31.67 to stay. 00:03:31.67\00:03:32.67 And the Samaritans 00:03:32.67\00:03:33.61 aren't looking kindly at Jesus 00:03:33.61\00:03:35.14 not coming to visit them. 00:03:35.14\00:03:36.68 Hey, if you're 00:03:36.68\00:03:37.05 not here to see us, 00:03:37.21\00:03:38.41 you can't stay. 00:03:38.41\00:03:40.08 Well, the account continues, 00:03:40.85\00:03:43.32 when James and John saw this, 00:03:43.79\00:03:46.22 they said, Lord, 00:03:46.39\00:03:47.89 do you want us to command 00:03:47.89\00:03:49.42 that fire 00:03:49.42\00:03:50.36 come down from heaven 00:03:50.36\00:03:51.43 and consume them 00:03:51.43\00:03:52.23 just as Elijah did? 00:03:52.23\00:03:54.03 Now, these were Bible students. 00:03:54.03\00:03:55.73 They remember that story 00:03:55.73\00:03:57.47 when enemy soldiers 00:03:57.47\00:03:59.10 tried to take God's 00:03:59.10\00:04:00.34 prophet captive 00:04:00.34\00:04:03.14 some fiery drama ensued. 00:04:03.24\00:04:06.37 And they think somehow 00:04:06.81\00:04:08.01 that they have got 00:04:08.01\00:04:08.91 it all connected 00:04:08.91\00:04:10.18 and they know just what to do. 00:04:10.18\00:04:11.68 What is Jesus response? 00:04:11.68\00:04:14.02 Says Jesus rebuked them. 00:04:14.02\00:04:16.25 You don't know what 00:04:16.25\00:04:17.55 manner of spirit you are of. 00:04:17.55\00:04:19.65 For the Son of Man 00:04:19.92\00:04:20.86 did not come to destroy 00:04:20.86\00:04:22.42 men's lives. But to do what? 00:04:22.42\00:04:24.63 To save them. 00:04:24.63\00:04:26.13 Jesus is interested 00:04:26.13\00:04:27.66 in the saving business. 00:04:27.66\00:04:28.70 James and John, 00:04:28.70\00:04:29.56 You might have said, 00:04:29.56\00:04:30.43 Hey, they're disqualified 00:04:30.43\00:04:31.67 right here. 00:04:31.67\00:04:33.90 But no James and John. 00:04:33.90\00:04:35.27 Jesus, rebuked them. 00:04:35.27\00:04:36.57 I think you're seeing this. 00:04:36.57\00:04:38.47 But what did they do 00:04:38.47\00:04:39.34 with the rebuke? 00:04:39.34\00:04:40.61 When Jesus rebuked them? 00:04:40.61\00:04:41.81 Did they say, hey, 00:04:41.81\00:04:42.98 if you're not doing it 00:04:42.98\00:04:43.75 our way, 00:04:43.75\00:04:44.28 then we're out of here. 00:04:44.28\00:04:45.05 We're quoting the Bible. 00:04:45.05\00:04:46.31 And if Jesus, Jesus, 00:04:46.31\00:04:47.28 if you're not 00:04:47.28\00:04:47.78 going along with it, 00:04:47.78\00:04:48.62 we know you're 00:04:48.62\00:04:49.05 not the true Messiah. 00:04:49.18\00:04:50.05 Is that what they did? 00:04:50.05\00:04:51.52 No. 00:04:51.52\00:04:52.45 When Jesus rebuked them, 00:04:52.45\00:04:53.72 what did they do? 00:04:53.72\00:04:55.09 The implication is 00:04:55.09\00:04:55.96 they humble themselves. 00:04:55.96\00:04:57.09 They kept staying with 00:04:57.09\00:04:58.96 the disciples. 00:04:58.96\00:05:00.16 They didn't leave. 00:05:00.16\00:05:00.93 They didn't 00:05:00.93\00:05:01.20 say, Hey, Jesus, it's our way 00:05:01.60\00:05:03.30 or we're gone. 00:05:03.97\00:05:05.40 There was one disciple 00:05:05.40\00:05:06.53 like that, right? 00:05:06.53\00:05:08.07 He was going to have 00:05:08.07\00:05:08.77 things on his term 00:05:08.77\00:05:09.84 and it didn't turn out 00:05:09.84\00:05:10.67 good for him. 00:05:10.67\00:05:11.67 His name was Judas. 00:05:11.67\00:05:12.84 Well, with 00:05:13.94\00:05:14.51 this kind of background, 00:05:14.51\00:05:15.94 you?think, Well, 00:05:15.94\00:05:16.61 that's enough. 00:05:16.61\00:05:17.58 Enough strikes against John. 00:05:17.58\00:05:18.91 It gets worse, 00:05:18.91\00:05:20.02 at least 00:05:20.02\00:05:20.42 in the eyes of the disciples. 00:05:20.72\00:05:22.72 Because if you put together 00:05:22.72\00:05:24.22 Matthew 20 and Mark 10 side 00:05:24.22\00:05:27.29 by side, 00:05:27.29\00:05:27.76 you'll come 00:05:27.76\00:05:28.26 to an interesting observation. 00:05:28.42\00:05:32.56 You'll realize that 00:05:32.56\00:05:33.66 James and John 00:05:33.66\00:05:34.63 wanted to be number one 00:05:34.63\00:05:36.03 and two in the Kingdom, 00:05:36.03\00:05:38.60 and they were not content 00:05:38.73\00:05:40.64 just to 00:05:40.64\00:05:42.47 bring that request 00:05:42.47\00:05:43.71 to Jesus on their own. 00:05:43.71\00:05:44.87 They even put their mother 00:05:44.87\00:05:46.34 up to it. 00:05:46.34\00:05:47.44 I mean, can you believe that? 00:05:47.44\00:05:49.24 I mean, 00:05:49.24\00:05:49.44 maybe they thought 00:05:49.74\00:05:50.85 they'd lost 00:05:51.15\00:05:51.58 some of their political 00:05:51.71\00:05:52.41 capital already, 00:05:52.41\00:05:53.31 you know, trying to burn cities 00:05:53.31\00:05:54.85 and trying to rebuke people 00:05:54.85\00:05:56.55 so maybe mom 00:05:56.55\00:05:57.95 can talk with Jesus 00:05:57.95\00:05:59.75 and get them to be number 00:05:59.75\00:06:01.26 one and two in the kingdom. 00:06:01.26\00:06:02.92 How do you think the rest of 00:06:04.56\00:06:05.49 the disciples looked at that? 00:06:05.49\00:06:07.73 Oh, this is this is terrible. 00:06:07.73\00:06:09.70 Okay. 00:06:09.70\00:06:10.67 By the way, 00:06:10.67\00:06:11.23 what do you think of it? 00:06:11.23\00:06:12.80 Okay. 00:06:12.80\00:06:13.64 If I told you, you know, 00:06:14.44\00:06:15.94 my goal is to be the number 00:06:15.94\00:06:17.37 two person 00:06:17.37\00:06:17.94 or the number one person 00:06:17.94\00:06:18.91 in the Adventist church. 00:06:18.91\00:06:19.77 You know, let's start 00:06:19.77\00:06:20.28 a writing campaign and say, 00:06:20.44\00:06:21.41 What's the matter 00:06:21.41\00:06:21.94 with this guy? 00:06:21.94\00:06:23.08 You know, 00:06:23.08\00:06:23.35 we're supposed to be humble 00:06:23.75\00:06:24.28 servants, right? 00:06:24.28\00:06:29.72 Despite all these deficiencies 00:06:29.72\00:06:32.19 in John's character, 00:06:32.19\00:06:33.79 despite all these ways 00:06:33.79\00:06:35.82 that he seemed 00:06:35.82\00:06:36.73 to let Jesus down. 00:06:36.73\00:06:39.29 You read in John's gospel, 00:06:39.29\00:06:41.06 turn there with me to John 21. 00:06:41.06\00:06:43.57 I want you to see this 00:06:43.57\00:06:44.60 with your own eyes. 00:06:44.60\00:06:46.27 John 21 00:06:46.27\00:06:48.44 Because John refers to himself 00:06:48.44\00:06:50.97 repeatedly 00:06:50.97\00:06:52.71 as the disciple 00:06:52.71\00:06:54.38 whom Jesus loved. 00:06:54.38\00:06:56.61 Do you see it there? 00:06:56.91\00:06:58.45 John 21:7 That disciple 00:06:58.45\00:07:02.08 whom Jesus loved. 00:07:02.08\00:07:03.89 Now, a lot of people say, 00:07:03.89\00:07:05.02 Well, he had an inflated ego. 00:07:05.02\00:07:08.19 Jesus loved him. No, no, no. 00:07:08.42\00:07:10.59 The Greek scholars 00:07:10.59\00:07:11.63 tell us 00:07:11.63\00:07:12.43 that the form 00:07:12.43\00:07:13.33 of the word used there, 00:07:13.33\00:07:15.36 refers to the one 00:07:16.26\00:07:17.60 that Jesus kept on loving. 00:07:17.60\00:07:21.24 It's like John 00:07:22.34\00:07:22.97 is saying, Yeah, I did this, 00:07:22.97\00:07:24.41 but Jesus kept loving me. 00:07:24.41\00:07:26.07 Then I did this 00:07:26.07\00:07:27.14 and Jesus kept loving me. 00:07:27.14\00:07:28.58 Yeah. 00:07:28.58\00:07:29.21 And I wouldn't 00:07:29.21\00:07:30.08 I hate to say it, 00:07:30.08\00:07:31.41 but by the way, 00:07:31.41\00:07:32.08 let me just tell you, you know, 00:07:32.08\00:07:33.31 all these stories we looked at 00:07:33.31\00:07:34.55 that don't make John 00:07:34.55\00:07:35.45 look all that good. 00:07:35.45\00:07:36.45 None of them are found in 00:07:36.45\00:07:37.32 John's gospel. 00:07:37.32\00:07:39.05 Okay. 00:07:39.05\00:07:39.95 And now, to John's credit, 00:07:41.32\00:07:43.39 I think he just wanted it 00:07:43.39\00:07:44.59 to shine the light on Jesus. 00:07:44.59\00:07:46.90 But. 00:07:46.90\00:07:47.20 But you're getting the picture 00:07:47.56\00:07:48.20 here. What? 00:07:48.20\00:07:48.90 What does he say? 00:07:48.90\00:07:49.86 Jesus just kept on loving me. 00:07:49.86\00:07:51.97 This is the God 00:07:52.53\00:07:53.64 that we're talking about. 00:07:53.64\00:07:54.60 This is the God that we see 00:07:54.60\00:07:55.84 through these four 00:07:55.84\00:07:56.47 gospel writers. 00:07:56.47\00:07:57.57 A God of social connectedness 00:07:57.57\00:07:59.54 who wants to come 00:07:59.54\00:08:00.71 and connect with you 00:08:00.71\00:08:01.48 no matter how you've messed up, 00:08:01.48\00:08:03.28 no matter what you've said, 00:08:03.28\00:08:04.68 no matter what 00:08:04.68\00:08:05.15 you've done wrong 00:08:05.15\00:08:06.28 in the church. 00:08:06.28\00:08:07.15 Matthew 00:08:08.68\00:08:09.15 and John can relate to you. 00:08:09.35\00:08:11.22 What about Luke? 00:08:12.22\00:08:13.96 Now, Luke 00:08:13.96\00:08:14.72 actually had no 00:08:14.72\00:08:15.56 personal experience with Jesus. 00:08:15.56\00:08:17.96 So you say, well, 00:08:17.96\00:08:18.46 how could you know? 00:08:18.46\00:08:19.26 How could he have anything 00:08:19.26\00:08:20.46 negative against him? 00:08:20.46\00:08:21.80 Well, Luke was a Gentile. 00:08:21.80\00:08:24.60 And you know how 00:08:24.60\00:08:25.37 the Jews looked 00:08:25.37\00:08:26.17 at the Gentiles. 00:08:26.17\00:08:28.64 Luke is called the beloved 00:08:28.84\00:08:30.47 physician after 00:08:30.47\00:08:31.71 he was converted. 00:08:31.71\00:08:33.48 But I don't know what you think 00:08:33.48\00:08:34.81 about physicians today. 00:08:34.81\00:08:36.14 I've noticed that, 00:08:36.14\00:08:37.55 yes, some people 00:08:37.55\00:08:38.95 have favorable impressions 00:08:38.95\00:08:40.25 of physicians, but 00:08:40.25\00:08:41.95 other people are happy to 00:08:41.95\00:08:44.22 share other impressions. 00:08:44.22\00:08:45.79 And I'm sure it was 00:08:45.79\00:08:47.02 similar back then. 00:08:47.02\00:08:49.36 Luke, the beloved physician, 00:08:49.36\00:08:52.03 after his conversion. 00:08:52.03\00:08:54.20 So I want you to turn to 00:08:54.20\00:08:55.93 Acts 16, 00:08:55.93\00:08:56.87 because I want you to see 00:08:56.87\00:08:57.63 this drama 00:08:57.63\00:08:59.10 in Acts 16. 00:08:59.63\00:09:01.64 It's easy 00:09:01.64\00:09:02.27 to miss 00:09:02.27\00:09:03.41 something very important 00:09:03.41\00:09:04.57 because we're looking at these 00:09:04.57\00:09:05.71 different Bible writers, 00:09:05.71\00:09:07.04 and I want you to see 00:09:07.04\00:09:08.11 how Luke becomes connected 00:09:08.11\00:09:11.65 with Jesus. 00:09:12.18\00:09:14.68 We're in chapter 00:09:14.68\00:09:15.42 16 of the Book of Acts. 00:09:15.42\00:09:17.29 We are in the midst 00:09:17.29\00:09:18.52 or the beginnings of Paul's, 00:09:18.52\00:09:20.79 what we call 00:09:20.79\00:09:21.22 second missionary journey. 00:09:21.42\00:09:24.89 Paul is traveling, 00:09:26.09\00:09:27.86 and as you come to verse six of 00:09:27.86\00:09:31.23 the 16th chapter of Acts, 00:09:31.23\00:09:32.77 we read these words. 00:09:32.77\00:09:34.27 Now when they had gone 00:09:34.27\00:09:35.40 through Phrygia 00:09:35.40\00:09:36.40 and the region of Galatia, 00:09:36.40\00:09:38.11 they were 00:09:38.11\00:09:39.01 forbidden by the Holy Spirit 00:09:39.01\00:09:41.48 to preach the word in Asia. 00:09:41.61\00:09:43.71 Now, I mean, 00:09:43.71\00:09:44.18 this is really strange, 00:09:44.28\00:09:45.21 isn't it? 00:09:45.21\00:09:45.98 How many of you have heard 00:09:46.08\00:09:47.12 about a preacher 00:09:47.12\00:09:48.52 who said to the congregation 00:09:48.52\00:09:50.29 the Holy Spirit 00:09:50.29\00:09:51.09 forbade him 00:09:51.09\00:09:51.82 to preach those 00:09:51.82\00:09:52.65 evangelistic meetings? 00:09:52.65\00:09:54.92 Now, maybe 00:09:54.92\00:09:55.46 you've heard of that before. 00:09:55.59\00:09:56.52 I can't remember here 00:09:56.52\00:09:58.23 hearing that terminology. 00:09:58.23\00:09:59.83 You see like, well, 00:09:59.83\00:10:01.13 you know, 00:10:01.13\00:10:01.50 if someone wants to preach, 00:10:01.80\00:10:02.66 God is going to bless that. 00:10:02.66\00:10:03.60 But Paul is wanting to preach. 00:10:03.60\00:10:04.83 He's want to tell people 00:10:04.83\00:10:05.67 about Jesus. 00:10:05.67\00:10:06.47 And the Holy Spirit says, what? 00:10:06.47\00:10:08.67 No. 00:10:08.67\00:10:09.27 So what does Paul do? 00:10:10.51\00:10:11.87 He's got a burden 00:10:11.87\00:10:12.71 for the cross, for Jesus. 00:10:12.71\00:10:14.21 Verse 7 Acts 16 00:10:14.21\00:10:16.44 After they had come to Mysia 00:10:16.88\00:10:19.05 they tried to go into Bithynia, 00:10:19.05\00:10:21.32 but what happened? 00:10:21.32\00:10:22.82 The Spirit did not permit them. 00:10:22.82\00:10:25.09 So door 00:10:25.79\00:10:27.06 after door is closing. Now 00:10:27.06\00:10:28.69 some of you might 00:10:28.69\00:10:29.26 just think, well, 00:10:29.26\00:10:29.76 these are close 00:10:29.76\00:10:30.89 places together. 00:10:30.89\00:10:31.86 But as you read through 00:10:31.86\00:10:32.73 these several verses, 00:10:32.73\00:10:33.96 you're talking about several 00:10:33.96\00:10:35.26 hundred miles of travel. 00:10:35.26\00:10:37.83 Best I can map it out. 00:10:37.83\00:10:39.90 And this is not 00:10:40.47\00:10:41.67 traveling in your sports 00:10:41.67\00:10:44.61 car, okay? 00:10:44.61\00:10:45.77 It's traveling how? 00:10:45.77\00:10:47.84 Maybe by foot. 00:10:47.84\00:10:48.81 Maybe on some equestrian. 00:10:48.81\00:10:51.15 Okay. 00:10:51.18\00:10:52.31 And what's going on? 00:10:52.75\00:10:55.98 Paul is spending days, 00:10:57.12\00:10:59.35 maybe weeks. 00:10:59.35\00:11:01.06 And all he's hearing from 00:11:01.06\00:11:02.22 the Holy Spirit 00:11:02.22\00:11:03.16 is don't preach, 00:11:03.16\00:11:04.53 don't preach, don't preach. 00:11:04.53\00:11:06.70 How many of you think 00:11:07.00\00:11:07.73 Paul might have wondered? 00:11:07.73\00:11:08.70 You know, maybe. 00:11:08.70\00:11:09.76 Maybe my preaching 00:11:09.76\00:11:10.67 days are over. 00:11:10.67\00:11:11.27 Maybe I've done something 00:11:11.27\00:11:12.13 really bad. 00:11:12.13\00:11:12.73 Maybe the Lord doesn't 00:11:12.73\00:11:13.40 want to use me anymore. 00:11:13.40\00:11:14.47 You think that could have 00:11:14.47\00:11:15.27 run through his head? 00:11:15.27\00:11:16.04 Finally, Paul ends 00:11:17.34\00:11:18.47 up in a 00:11:18.47\00:11:19.14 place called Troas 00:11:19.14\00:11:20.84 in verse eight. 00:11:20.84\00:11:22.34 It says in 00:11:22.34\00:11:23.04 verse eight 00:11:23.04\00:11:23.58 They came down to Troas 00:11:23.58\00:11:26.78 and while he?n Troas 00:11:27.02\00:11:28.32 here is what happened. 00:11:28.32\00:11:29.18 It says a vision appears 00:11:29.18\00:11:30.49 to Paul in the night. 00:11:30.49\00:11:31.65 A man of Macedonia 00:11:31.65\00:11:33.22 stood and pleaded 00:11:33.22\00:11:34.42 with him, saying, 00:11:34.42\00:11:35.26 Come over to Macedonia 00:11:35.26\00:11:36.99 and help us. 00:11:36.99\00:11:38.86 Pay very careful attention 00:11:40.50\00:11:41.83 now in verse ten. 00:11:41.83\00:11:43.87 Now, after 00:11:44.30\00:11:45.60 he had seen 00:11:45.60\00:11:46.67 the vision immediately 00:11:46.67\00:11:49.14 we sought to go to Macedonia, 00:11:49.40\00:11:52.47 concluding that the Lord 00:11:52.87\00:11:54.24 had called us 00:11:54.24\00:11:56.01 to preach the gospel to them. 00:11:56.01\00:11:58.35 What's going on here? 00:11:58.35\00:12:00.52 It is in Troas 00:12:00.52\00:12:02.38 that Luke, the author 00:12:02.38\00:12:03.79 of the Book of Acts, 00:12:03.79\00:12:05.59 connects with Paul. 00:12:05.59\00:12:07.12 First, he is saying they, 00:12:07.12\00:12:08.29 they they. 00:12:08.29\00:12:09.06 And then what does he say? 00:12:09.06\00:12:10.66 We and us. 00:12:10.66\00:12:12.96 Do you understand 00:12:12.96\00:12:13.83 what's just happened here? 00:12:13.83\00:12:15.36 God is so interested 00:12:15.36\00:12:16.77 in connecting with people 00:12:16.77\00:12:18.30 that He puts 00:12:18.30\00:12:18.87 Paul on this long detour. 00:12:18.93\00:12:21.07 That?ot really a detour. 00:12:21.30\00:12:22.77 One of the reasons, 00:12:22.77\00:12:24.04 yes, is to go to Macedonia. 00:12:24.04\00:12:25.97 But another reason 00:12:25.97\00:12:27.08 that emerges is 00:12:27.08\00:12:27.81 He wants to connect him 00:12:27.81\00:12:29.11 with Luke, 00:12:29.11\00:12:30.18 who's going to end up writing 00:12:30.18\00:12:32.48 the Gospel of Luke 00:12:32.48\00:12:33.78 and the Book of Acts. 00:12:33.78\00:12:35.18 Isn't this amazing? 00:12:35.18\00:12:37.25 Why did God want 00:12:37.25\00:12:38.65 a physician involved 00:12:38.65\00:12:40.36 writing a Bible book? 00:12:40.36\00:12:41.56 What?nteresting. 00:12:41.56\00:12:42.69 If you look through 00:12:42.69\00:12:43.46 Luke's gospel, 00:12:43.46\00:12:44.33 you'll find some amazing things 00:12:44.33\00:12:45.86 that you would expect 00:12:45.86\00:12:46.63 maybe only a physician 00:12:46.63\00:12:47.86 to write about. 00:12:47.86\00:12:49.10 I've noticed 00:12:49.10\00:12:50.53 when I'm 00:12:50.53\00:12:50.83 sitting around a dinner table, 00:12:51.20\00:12:52.23 even though my wife and I 00:12:52.23\00:12:53.17 are both physicians, 00:12:53.17\00:12:54.44 that people often start 00:12:54.44\00:12:55.84 apologizing to us 00:12:55.84\00:12:57.04 because they're talking about 00:12:57.04\00:12:58.57 some bodily function 00:12:58.57\00:12:59.94 or something. 00:12:59.94\00:13:00.68 And I said, don't worry. 00:13:00.68\00:13:02.08 I mean, we've 00:13:02.08\00:13:02.54 you know, 00:13:02.54\00:13:02.94 when you go through 00:13:03.08\00:13:03.51 medical school and residency, 00:13:03.78\00:13:04.88 I mean, you're in conferences 00:13:04.88\00:13:05.95 where they're showing you know 00:13:05.95\00:13:06.78 pathology and surgery 00:13:06.78\00:13:08.12 while you're eating lunch. 00:13:08.12\00:13:09.02 Okay? 00:13:09.02\00:13:09.85 You know, 00:13:10.29\00:13:10.92 we're traind 00:13:10.92\00:13:11.59 to be kind of immune 00:13:11.59\00:13:12.49 to that stuff. 00:13:12.49\00:13:14.16 So I've noticed that 00:13:14.16\00:13:15.76 some people well, 00:13:15.76\00:13:17.46 they don't like to talk 00:13:17.46\00:13:18.63 about all the gory stuff. 00:13:18.63\00:13:20.26 So if you read 00:13:20.26\00:13:21.90 John's gospel 00:13:21.90\00:13:23.37 or Matthew's gospel 00:13:23.37\00:13:24.57 or Mark's gospel, 00:13:24.57\00:13:25.80 you will not read 00:13:25.80\00:13:27.30 that when Jesus 00:13:27.30\00:13:28.40 was in the Garden 00:13:28.40\00:13:29.07 of Gethsemane, 00:13:29.07\00:13:30.01 He sweat great drops of blood. 00:13:30.01\00:13:32.74 Who do you think included 00:13:33.14\00:13:34.11 that detail? 00:13:34.11\00:13:35.61 Yes, Physician Luke. 00:13:35.78\00:13:37.75 Says many medical insights 00:13:37.75\00:13:39.48 in the Gospel of Luke, 00:13:39.48\00:13:40.32 and I know some of you 00:13:40.32\00:13:40.92 right now 00:13:40.92\00:13:41.15 are probably scratching 00:13:41.48\00:13:41.82 your head. 00:13:41.82\00:13:42.05 Wait a minute. 00:13:42.22\00:13:43.02 We're going to 00:13:43.02\00:13:43.55 we're starting a series. 00:13:43.62\00:13:45.29 You give me the background 00:13:45.29\00:13:46.39 right now to a series 00:13:46.39\00:13:47.82 on healing insights from what? 00:13:47.82\00:13:50.13 The gospel of Mark. 00:13:50.13\00:13:51.66 I mean, 00:13:51.66\00:13:51.96 why are we studying 00:13:52.19\00:13:52.63 the Gospel of Luke? 00:13:52.73\00:13:53.46 Well, 00:13:53.46\00:13:53.60 we could have studied 00:13:54.00\00:13:54.36 the Gospel of Luke. 00:13:54.56\00:13:55.50 But Mark is 00:13:55.50\00:13:56.20 especially powerful. 00:13:56.20\00:13:58.33 Mark is the shortest 00:13:58.33\00:13:59.57 of the gospels. 00:13:59.57\00:14:00.60 It is. 00:14:00.60\00:14:01.14 It is filled with a vigor 00:14:01.24\00:14:03.34 that many people say emerges, 00:14:03.34\00:14:05.71 especially in that gospel. 00:14:05.71\00:14:07.94 And Mark well, 00:14:08.08\00:14:09.54 who was Mark anyway? 00:14:09.54\00:14:11.38 Yes, we have to appreciate 00:14:11.38\00:14:12.81 that, Mark 00:14:12.81\00:14:14.32 very interesting character. 00:14:14.32\00:14:16.62 It is likely that he did 00:14:16.62\00:14:18.62 know Jesus probably 00:14:18.79\00:14:20.49 had not traveled extensively, 00:14:20.49\00:14:22.22 extensively with Jesus, 00:14:22.22\00:14:23.79 but Mark was a firsthand 00:14:23.79\00:14:25.46 witness of the early church. 00:14:25.46\00:14:27.86 Look with me at Acts 12, 00:14:28.20\00:14:31.23 and I want you to notice 00:14:31.80\00:14:33.27 it's in 00:14:33.27\00:14:34.34 an amazing context, really. 00:14:34.34\00:14:37.61 By the time 00:14:37.61\00:14:38.14 you get to the middle 00:14:38.14\00:14:38.94 of Acts 12 00:14:38.94\00:14:40.41 and you may want to turn there, 00:14:40.41\00:14:41.61 if your Bible is still open 00:14:41.61\00:14:42.81 to Acts, it's not a great task. 00:14:42.81\00:14:45.08 And that's what I'm doing. 00:14:45.08\00:14:46.72 But if you look at the 00:14:46.72\00:14:47.48 background of Acts 00:14:47.48\00:14:48.45 12, it is not a pretty picture 00:14:48.45\00:14:50.32 what is happening 00:14:50.32\00:14:50.95 to the church. 00:14:50.95\00:14:52.39 In Acts 00:14:52.39\00:14:53.12 12 as the account opens up. 00:14:53.19\00:14:55.22 James, the brother of John, 00:14:55.72\00:14:57.93 one of those two 00:14:58.19\00:14:58.89 sons of Thunder, 00:14:58.89\00:15:00.13 had been martyred. 00:15:00.13\00:15:01.13 He's the first 00:15:01.13\00:15:02.10 martyr among the 12. 00:15:02.10\00:15:03.57 He's martyred in 00:15:04.87\00:15:05.63 verse two, 00:15:05.63\00:15:07.07 Herod was the one 00:15:07.07\00:15:08.67 who perpetrated the crime, 00:15:08.67\00:15:10.71 at least orchestrated it, 00:15:10.71\00:15:12.47 had him executed. 00:15:12.47\00:15:14.08 And in verse three, 00:15:14.08\00:15:15.04 it says Acts 12:3, it 00:15:15.04\00:15:16.78 says, Because Herod saw it, 00:15:16.78\00:15:18.55 pleased the Jews. 00:15:18.55\00:15:19.71 He proceeded further to seize 00:15:19.71\00:15:21.88 Peter also. 00:15:21.88\00:15:23.85 So here's the picture, Peter. 00:15:23.85\00:15:25.52 Now, in jail. 00:15:25.52\00:15:26.55 You know the story, many of you 00:15:26.55\00:15:27.62 very well. 00:15:27.62\00:15:28.06 If you haven't read it 00:15:28.16\00:15:28.59 in a while, it's 00:15:28.59\00:15:29.06 an amazing story. 00:15:29.06\00:15:30.03 Read through Acts 12. 00:15:30.03\00:15:31.56 Peter is put in a position 00:15:31.56\00:15:33.76 that, humanly 00:15:33.76\00:15:34.40 speaking, it's over. 00:15:34.40\00:15:36.77 Okay. 00:15:36.77\00:15:37.67 Multiple guards, 00:15:37.97\00:15:39.07 multiple doors. 00:15:39.07\00:15:40.10 He's in jail. 00:15:40.10\00:15:40.84 He's going to be executed 00:15:40.84\00:15:41.87 the next day. 00:15:41.87\00:15:43.54 And Peter, trusting in 00:15:43.74\00:15:44.94 Jesus, is sleeping. 00:15:44.94\00:15:46.98 An angel awakens him 00:15:47.14\00:15:49.01 and he is miraculously 00:15:49.01\00:15:50.41 led out of the prison 00:15:50.41\00:15:52.25 through multiple doors, 00:15:52.25\00:15:53.58 past multiple guards. 00:15:53.58\00:15:55.38 Peter thinks he's in a dream. 00:15:55.38\00:15:56.92 Okay, 00:15:56.92\00:15:57.85 but finally 00:15:57.92\00:15:58.59 he comes to his senses. 00:15:58.59\00:15:59.72 And here in chapter 00:15:59.72\00:16:00.79 12, verse 12, 00:16:00.79\00:16:01.99 it says, 00:16:01.99\00:16:02.79 When he realized it's 00:16:02.79\00:16:03.89 not a dream, 00:16:03.89\00:16:05.13 he went to the house of Mary, 00:16:05.13\00:16:07.73 the mother of John, 00:16:08.03\00:16:10.20 whose other name was Mark, 00:16:10.20\00:16:12.50 where many were 00:16:13.27\00:16:14.14 gathered together 00:16:14.14\00:16:15.17 and were praying. 00:16:15.17\00:16:16.81 The early church 00:16:16.81\00:16:17.81 was meeting in the home 00:16:17.81\00:16:19.77 of someone 00:16:19.77\00:16:20.44 that we refer 00:16:20.44\00:16:21.08 to today as John Mark. 00:16:21.08\00:16:23.48 He's called John 00:16:23.65\00:16:24.61 his other name, Mark. 00:16:24.61\00:16:25.75 They said, well, wait, 00:16:25.75\00:16:26.28 wait a minute, wait a minute. 00:16:26.45\00:16:27.65 You're reading from the English 00:16:27.65\00:16:29.65 standard version, 00:16:29.65\00:16:30.49 but I've got the King 00:16:30.49\00:16:31.39 James version. 00:16:31.39\00:16:32.42 And it says there, 00:16:32.42\00:16:33.96 John, who's surname was Mark. 00:16:33.96\00:16:35.96 We all know what a surname 00:16:35.96\00:16:37.09 is, right? 00:16:37.09\00:16:38.06 I am David DeRose. 00:16:38.33\00:16:40.03 What is my surname? 00:16:40.03\00:16:42.10 DeRose, you say 00:16:42.10\00:16:43.37 so His last name 00:16:43.37\00:16:44.53 obviously was Mark. 00:16:44.53\00:16:46.57 Well, 00:16:46.57\00:16:47.54 historians actually tell us 00:16:47.84\00:16:49.20 that during Bible times 00:16:49.20\00:16:50.47 people didn't go by last names 00:16:50.47\00:16:52.77 like they go today. 00:16:53.01\00:16:54.78 So the clearer translation 00:16:54.78\00:16:56.58 actually seems to be 00:16:56.58\00:16:58.11 whose other name was Mark. 00:16:58.11\00:16:59.65 But I know some would say, 00:16:59.65\00:17:00.95 but listen, I'm 00:17:00.95\00:17:01.92 going by the King James. 00:17:01.92\00:17:03.15 That's the Bible that I use. 00:17:03.15\00:17:04.42 Well, hang in 00:17:04.42\00:17:05.85 there with me for a minute. 00:17:05.85\00:17:06.76 There's a reason we look 00:17:07.89\00:17:08.79 at multiple translations. 00:17:08.79\00:17:10.06 I believe the King 00:17:10.06\00:17:10.76 James version 00:17:10.76\00:17:11.33 is a tremendous version. 00:17:11.33\00:17:13.03 Probably my favorite version. 00:17:13.03\00:17:14.83 If you look at my 00:17:14.83\00:17:15.70 history of Bible study, 00:17:15.70\00:17:16.80 probably studied far more 00:17:16.80\00:17:18.00 from that version 00:17:18.00\00:17:18.73 than any other. 00:17:18.73\00:17:19.93 But sometimes with our modern 00:17:19.93\00:17:23.41 preconceived ideas, 00:17:23.74\00:17:25.84 we get confused 00:17:25.84\00:17:27.21 when we read any version. 00:17:27.21\00:17:28.78 So it's nice 00:17:28.78\00:17:29.34 to compare the versions. 00:17:29.34\00:17:30.98 If you have a concordance 00:17:30.98\00:17:32.51 or a lexicon, 00:17:32.51\00:17:33.25 or if you know some Hebrew 00:17:33.25\00:17:34.22 or Greek to actually go back 00:17:34.22\00:17:35.35 to the original languages. 00:17:35.35\00:17:36.95 Not many of us 00:17:36.95\00:17:37.62 have that privilege. 00:17:37.62\00:17:38.65 But the point is, 00:17:38.65\00:17:40.16 the Holy Spirit 00:17:40.16\00:17:41.06 wants to guide you 00:17:41.06\00:17:42.16 as you engage with the world. 00:17:42.16\00:17:43.29 So let me give you 00:17:43.29\00:17:43.86 an example here 00:17:43.86\00:17:44.96 from the Book of Acts 00:17:44.96\00:17:46.59 11:13 we read this in the King 00:17:46.59\00:17:50.87 James version. 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.20 Simon whose surname was Peter. 00:17:52.20\00:17:55.00 Now, the way the King 00:17:56.10\00:17:57.17 James is using 00:17:57.17\00:17:57.84 the term surname, 00:17:57.84\00:17:58.81 is it using as a last name 00:17:58.81\00:18:01.14 or is it using it 00:18:01.14\00:18:02.01 as an alternate name 00:18:02.01\00:18:03.41 who is also named. 00:18:03.41\00:18:05.18 Other translations, 00:18:05.18\00:18:06.28 modern translations typically 00:18:06.28\00:18:08.08 read Acts 00:18:08.08\00:18:09.25 11:13, Simon who is what? 00:18:09.25\00:18:11.62 Also named Peter. 00:18:12.45\00:18:14.89 Now, some of you 00:18:16.12\00:18:16.93 have a good memory 00:18:16.93\00:18:17.93 and you realize that 00:18:17.93\00:18:18.83 not all that long ago 00:18:18.83\00:18:19.83 in this very message, 00:18:19.83\00:18:21.23 I read from a Bible verse, 00:18:21.23\00:18:23.43 it was found in Mark 3. 00:18:23.43\00:18:25.57 And if you remember what 00:18:25.57\00:18:26.90 that Bible verse said, 00:18:26.90\00:18:28.80 it went something like this 00:18:28.80\00:18:31.07 Jesus appointed the 12, Simon 00:18:31.07\00:18:34.44 to whom he what? 00:18:34.48\00:18:36.28 Gave the name Peter. 00:18:36.28\00:18:38.98 Simon who was surnamed Peter? 00:18:38.98\00:18:41.68 We would say it today. 00:18:42.12\00:18:43.25 Simon 00:18:43.25\00:18:43.85 who was also called Peter. 00:18:43.85\00:18:45.72 Are you following 00:18:45.72\00:18:46.09 along with me? 00:18:46.09\00:18:47.62 So just like, 00:18:47.62\00:18:49.22 just like we might speak of 00:18:49.22\00:18:50.83 Simon Peter. 00:18:50.83\00:18:51.69 Peter is not his last name. 00:18:51.69\00:18:53.76 Simon or Peter. 00:18:53.76\00:18:54.86 Sometimes we call him 00:18:54.86\00:18:55.50 Simon Peter, two first names 00:18:55.50\00:18:57.10 referring to the same person. 00:18:57.10\00:18:58.57 So it is with John Mark. 00:18:58.57\00:19:01.04 So Mark, 00:19:01.04\00:19:02.30 the writer 00:19:02.30\00:19:02.84 of the second Gospel, 00:19:02.84\00:19:03.97 sometimes referred to as John 00:19:03.97\00:19:06.07 other times as Mark. 00:19:06.17\00:19:07.21 Sometimes we call him 00:19:07.21\00:19:08.11 John Mark. 00:19:08.11\00:19:09.01 Does that help connect 00:19:09.01\00:19:10.08 some of the dots for you? 00:19:10.08\00:19:11.05 Okay, Mark, let's 00:19:12.28\00:19:14.48 learn a little bit 00:19:14.48\00:19:15.02 more about him. 00:19:15.02\00:19:15.75 Not only did 00:19:15.75\00:19:16.28 the early church 00:19:16.28\00:19:17.02 meet in his home, 00:19:17.02\00:19:18.55 not only was he connected 00:19:18.55\00:19:20.69 with the apostles early on, 00:19:20.69\00:19:21.96 but he was intimately connected 00:19:21.96\00:19:24.36 because we read in Acts 13 00:19:24.36\00:19:26.73 that as Paul 00:19:26.90\00:19:28.06 and Barnabas are going on 00:19:28.06\00:19:29.66 their first missionary journey, 00:19:29.66\00:19:31.40 it says, 00:19:31.40\00:19:32.87 when they arrived at Salamis, 00:19:32.87\00:19:35.04 they proclaimed the word of God 00:19:35.20\00:19:36.94 in the Jewish synagogue. 00:19:36.94\00:19:39.61 John Mark 00:19:39.77\00:19:41.38 was with them as their helper. 00:19:41.38\00:19:44.41 So who was one of the 00:19:44.41\00:19:45.45 first missionaries 00:19:45.45\00:19:46.95 in the Christian church? 00:19:46.95\00:19:48.72 It was Mark, 00:19:48.72\00:19:49.82 the second gospel writer. 00:19:49.82\00:19:51.12 Now, think about this. 00:19:51.12\00:19:51.95 If you're a parent, 00:19:51.95\00:19:53.19 how many of you 00:19:53.19\00:19:54.22 if you had a child 00:19:54.22\00:19:55.89 who was 00:19:55.89\00:19:57.06 working with Paul and Barnabas, 00:19:57.06\00:19:59.19 how many of you would 00:19:59.19\00:19:59.83 as a mother 00:19:59.83\00:20:00.60 would be proud of your son? 00:20:00.60\00:20:02.50 I mean, wouldn't you? 00:20:02.50\00:20:03.63 I mean, 00:20:03.63\00:20:04.13 what more could you want? 00:20:04.27\00:20:05.90 You know, your son 00:20:05.90\00:20:06.84 following Jesus, active 00:20:06.84\00:20:08.84 on the 00:20:08.84\00:20:09.04 frontlines of gospel work. 00:20:09.47\00:20:12.84 Unfortunately, 00:20:12.84\00:20:14.24 John Mark's story 00:20:14.24\00:20:15.51 does not end there. 00:20:15.51\00:20:17.45 As you read 00:20:17.45\00:20:17.91 just a little further 00:20:18.01\00:20:18.85 into Acts 13, 00:20:18.85\00:20:20.18 it says that 00:20:21.38\00:20:22.52 John Mark leaves 00:20:22.52\00:20:24.75 Paul and Barnabas. 00:20:24.75\00:20:26.52 He bails on them. 00:20:26.52\00:20:27.82 He leaves the missionary team. 00:20:27.82\00:20:29.89 Now, how do you think 00:20:29.89\00:20:32.63 you feel as John Mark's mother? 00:20:32.63\00:20:34.83 Well, 00:20:35.30\00:20:35.73 I mean, 00:20:35.73\00:20:36.03 at least 00:20:36.03\00:20:36.33 he went on the missionary trip. 00:20:36.73\00:20:39.10 It was tough back then. 00:20:39.10\00:20:40.30 I don't know if you remember, 00:20:40.30\00:20:41.20 you know, 00:20:41.20\00:20:41.37 you read Paul's accounts. 00:20:41.84\00:20:42.50 I mean, he's 00:20:42.50\00:20:43.27 Paul was stoned 00:20:43.27\00:20:44.27 and left for dead. 00:20:44.27\00:20:45.21 I mean, 00:20:45.21\00:20:45.74 went through 00:20:46.24\00:20:46.71 all kinds of turmoil. 00:20:46.81\00:20:48.44 So we're not talking about you 00:20:48.44\00:20:49.81 going on 00:20:49.81\00:20:50.61 a nice missionary trip, 00:20:50.61\00:20:52.41 you know, where 00:20:52.41\00:20:52.81 everyone's paved the way 00:20:53.01\00:20:53.85 before you, and you're going to 00:20:53.85\00:20:54.95 maybe build a church. 00:20:54.95\00:20:55.88 By the way, that's wonderful. 00:20:55.88\00:20:56.99 Or maybe go 00:20:56.99\00:20:57.42 preaching somewhere. 00:20:57.52\00:20:58.35 That's all wonderful. 00:20:58.35\00:20:59.85 And I believe, in short 00:20:59.85\00:21:00.96 term mission trips. 00:21:00.96\00:21:02.49 But this was 00:21:02.49\00:21:04.36 this was intense 00:21:04.36\00:21:05.23 missionary service back then. 00:21:05.23\00:21:07.20 And it seems that Mark 00:21:07.20\00:21:09.83 just kind of lost his nerve. 00:21:09.83\00:21:11.33 He was fearful, 00:21:11.33\00:21:12.23 he was frightened, and he left. 00:21:12.23\00:21:14.34 Unfortunately, the 00:21:15.37\00:21:16.54 story gets even worse 00:21:16.54\00:21:18.57 because when Paul and Barnabas 00:21:18.57\00:21:21.04 have finished 00:21:21.04\00:21:22.04 that first missionary journey 00:21:22.04\00:21:23.61 and at the end of Act 15, 00:21:23.61\00:21:24.98 they're planning a second 00:21:24.98\00:21:26.25 missionary journey. 00:21:26.25\00:21:26.98 Here's how it plays out. 00:21:26.98\00:21:28.35 Paul says to Barnabas, 00:21:28.35\00:21:29.88 Let's go back. 00:21:29.88\00:21:31.15 Let's visit 00:21:31.15\00:21:31.89 all those churches 00:21:31.89\00:21:32.85 that we raised up. 00:21:32.85\00:21:34.49 Let's see how they're doing. 00:21:34.49\00:21:36.19 And it says 00:21:36.19\00:21:36.89 Barnabas was determined 00:21:36.89\00:21:38.73 to take with them. 00:21:38.73\00:21:40.13 John called Mark. 00:21:40.13\00:21:42.93 Barnabas says, 00:21:42.93\00:21:43.87 We got to have Mark 00:21:43.87\00:21:44.80 give Mark another chance. 00:21:44.80\00:21:46.67 And how 00:21:46.67\00:21:47.47 willing is Paul to do that? 00:21:47.47\00:21:50.07 Some of you know the story 00:21:50.07\00:21:51.04 all too well. 00:21:51.04\00:21:52.11 It says Paul insisted 00:21:52.11\00:21:54.18 that they should 00:21:54.44\00:21:54.91 not take with them 00:21:54.91\00:21:55.91 the one who had departed 00:21:55.91\00:21:56.95 from them in Pamphylia 00:21:56.95\00:21:58.18 and had not 00:21:58.18\00:21:59.15 gone with them to the work. 00:21:59.15\00:22:01.32 But it doesn't just stop there 00:22:01.32\00:22:03.55 because it says 00:22:03.55\00:22:05.49 that the contention became 00:22:05.49\00:22:07.86 so sharp 00:22:07.92\00:22:09.09 between these two pillars, 00:22:09.09\00:22:10.46 these two pioneer 00:22:10.46\00:22:11.46 missionaries, that 00:22:11.46\00:22:12.09 what happens? 00:22:12.09\00:22:13.56 They said, 00:22:13.56\00:22:14.46 we're not working 00:22:14.73\00:22:15.36 together anymore. 00:22:15.36\00:22:16.23 You go ahead. 00:22:16.23\00:22:16.80 You take 00:22:16.80\00:22:17.60 Mark with you, Barnabas, 00:22:17.60\00:22:19.53 and I'm taking Silas. 00:22:19.53\00:22:21.04 That's what happend. 00:22:21.04\00:22:21.90 Paul and Barnabas 00:22:23.61\00:22:24.57 no longer working 00:22:24.57\00:22:25.47 as a missionary team. 00:22:25.47\00:22:26.98 Now, I don't know 00:22:26.98\00:22:28.34 how you're feeling 00:22:28.34\00:22:29.08 at this point 00:22:29.08\00:22:29.58 if you're John Mark's mother, 00:22:29.78\00:22:30.78 because when John Mark walks 00:22:30.78\00:22:32.55 into the back of the synagogue, 00:22:32.55\00:22:33.68 what are people saying? 00:22:33.68\00:22:35.08 What do they say? 00:22:35.08\00:22:36.52 What are they saying at the 00:22:36.62\00:22:37.89 at the potluck meals? 00:22:37.89\00:22:39.82 Oh, John Mark 00:22:39.82\00:22:41.06 messed up our best 00:22:41.06\00:22:41.99 missionary team in the church. 00:22:41.99\00:22:43.49 What a mess that guy was. 00:22:43.49\00:22:44.99 Yeah, mother was saying 00:22:44.99\00:22:45.93 how great he was. 00:22:45.93\00:22:46.86 What a what a loser. 00:22:46.86\00:22:48.23 I don't know. 00:22:48.23\00:22:49.33 Can you imagine 00:22:49.33\00:22:49.96 what was going on? 00:22:49.96\00:22:51.27 And maybe some of 00:22:51.27\00:22:52.00 you can relate 00:22:52.00\00:22:52.93 because maybe some of you feel 00:22:52.93\00:22:54.24 that you've let down 00:22:54.24\00:22:54.97 God before. 00:22:54.97\00:22:56.17 But here's the point. 00:22:56.17\00:22:57.87 The story 00:22:57.87\00:22:58.77 still does not end there. 00:22:58.77\00:23:00.58 This God 00:23:00.58\00:23:01.04 who connects 00:23:01.04\00:23:01.54 socially with people 00:23:01.54\00:23:02.88 has not given up on Mark. 00:23:02.88\00:23:07.35 Turn your Bibles to I Peter 5. 00:23:07.35\00:23:10.59 We're laying the foundation 00:23:11.32\00:23:12.55 for Mark's Gospel. 00:23:12.55\00:23:13.46 And it's a critical foundation 00:23:13.46\00:23:15.69 because if you don't understand 00:23:15.69\00:23:16.99 who Mark is, you're 00:23:16.99\00:23:17.89 not going to understand 00:23:17.89\00:23:19.53 how he brings this his story, 00:23:19.53\00:23:22.10 the one who let God down, 00:23:22.50\00:23:24.97 the one 00:23:25.13\00:23:25.53 who was not felt 00:23:25.60\00:23:26.40 to be worthwhile 00:23:26.40\00:23:27.60 by the Apostle Paul, 00:23:27.60\00:23:29.97 how he brings that 00:23:29.97\00:23:30.87 into his story of Jesus life. 00:23:30.87\00:23:33.41 I'm turning to I Peter 5:13. 00:23:33.54\00:23:37.85 I want you to see how Peter 00:23:38.48\00:23:41.05 refers to John Mark, verse 13. 00:23:41.25\00:23:44.55 Peter writing from Rome, 00:23:44.85\00:23:46.89 calling it Babylon. 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.06 She who is in Babylon 00:23:49.06\00:23:50.89 elect together 00:23:50.89\00:23:51.93 with you, 00:23:51.93\00:23:52.36 greets you, and so does 00:23:52.49\00:23:54.83 Mark my son. 00:23:55.60\00:23:57.73 Many believe 00:23:59.03\00:24:00.70 that Mark 00:24:00.70\00:24:01.94 learned of Jesus 00:24:01.94\00:24:03.04 ministry was introduced 00:24:03.04\00:24:03.97 to the Gospel 00:24:03.97\00:24:04.91 by none 00:24:04.91\00:24:05.47 other than Peter himself. 00:24:05.54\00:24:07.98 And so as we read through 00:24:07.98\00:24:09.28 Mark's gospel, 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.05 many believe 00:24:11.05\00:24:12.61 that Mark was 00:24:12.61\00:24:13.42 strongly influenced 00:24:13.42\00:24:15.42 by the stories 00:24:15.42\00:24:16.42 that Peter had told him. 00:24:16.42\00:24:17.59 You'll gain insights 00:24:17.59\00:24:18.49 into Peter's life 00:24:18.49\00:24:20.16 through Mark 00:24:20.16\00:24:20.66 ?spel that you won't get from 00:24:20.82\00:24:21.59 any of the other 00:24:21.59\00:24:21.99 gospel writers. 00:24:21.99\00:24:22.86 So keep that in mind 00:24:22.86\00:24:24.19 that there's a special, 00:24:24.19\00:24:25.69 intimate relationship 00:24:25.69\00:24:27.60 between Peter and John Mark. 00:24:27.60\00:24:30.07 But don't miss something else. 00:24:30.70\00:24:32.50 I want you to jump with me to 00:24:32.50\00:24:34.00 II Timothy 4. 00:24:34.00\00:24:36.00 And I want you to see here 00:24:36.00\00:24:37.31 this is Paul's last letter. 00:24:37.31\00:24:39.47 Paul knows his 00:24:39.47\00:24:41.24 his days are numbered. 00:24:41.24\00:24:43.58 I don't think he knew how much 00:24:43.58\00:24:46.11 they were numbered. 00:24:46.11\00:24:47.08 But when he's writing 00:24:47.08\00:24:47.88 II Timothy, 00:24:47.88\00:24:49.45 he is clearly mindful 00:24:49.45\00:24:51.65 that he doesn't 00:24:51.65\00:24:52.49 have much more time 00:24:52.49\00:24:53.52 on this earth. 00:24:53.52\00:24:56.59 He realizes a martyr's 00:24:56.59\00:24:58.59 death is awaiting him, 00:24:58.59\00:25:00.46 but he still thinks 00:25:00.46\00:25:01.60 there's a little bit of time 00:25:01.60\00:25:02.80 because of what he writes. 00:25:02.80\00:25:04.10 II Timothy 4:. 00:25:04.10\00:25:05.90 He is longing right now 00:25:05.90\00:25:07.54 for social connections. 00:25:07.54\00:25:09.57 So as he's writing 00:25:09.87\00:25:10.71 to Timothy in II Timothy 4:9, 00:25:10.71\00:25:13.88 he says. 00:25:14.11\00:25:14.58 Be diligent to come to me 00:25:14.74\00:25:17.65 and take your time. 00:25:17.78\00:25:18.98 Is that what you see 00:25:18.98\00:25:19.58 in your version?
