00:02:20.04\00:02:21.14 Does the Bible really 00:02:21.14\00:02:22.44 give a framework for fasting 00:02:22.44\00:02:25.34 as the foundation for a program 00:02:25.34\00:02:26.91 for any kind of 00:02:26.91\00:02:27.88 health benefits. 00:02:27.88\00:02:29.04 In a previous episode, 00:02:29.04\00:02:30.41 we actually talked 00:02:30.41\00:02:31.35 about this first point, 00:02:31.35\00:02:32.51 and that is that 00:02:32.51\00:02:33.31 fasting transcends 00:02:33.31\00:02:34.75 what we eat and drink. 00:02:34.75\00:02:35.98 We looked at Isaiah 58 00:02:35.98\00:02:38.15 and we saw how God was saying, 00:02:38.15\00:02:39.45 You're all focused 00:02:39.45\00:02:40.26 on what you're 00:02:40.26\00:02:41.09 not eating or not drinking, 00:02:41.09\00:02:42.96 but you need to be focused 00:02:42.96\00:02:44.49 on helping other people. 00:02:44.49\00:02:46.13 It's fasting, 00:02:46.13\00:02:47.23 true fasting is about more 00:02:47.23\00:02:49.26 than just what we eat 00:02:49.26\00:02:50.37 or don't eat. 00:02:50.37\00:02:51.80 But fasting can also be viewed 00:02:51.80\00:02:53.80 as an application of a Bible 00:02:53.80\00:02:55.60 principle known as temperance. 00:02:55.60\00:02:57.21 And why I'm 00:02:57.21\00:02:57.74 so excited about this 00:02:57.74\00:02:59.34 is because God promises 00:02:59.34\00:03:01.54 to give us the gift 00:03:01.71\00:03:03.01 of temperance. 00:03:03.01\00:03:04.41 I'm reading from Galatians 5, 00:03:04.41\00:03:06.58 the Word of God, Galatians 5:22 00:03:06.75\00:03:09.92 and onward. 00:03:10.09\00:03:11.32 Many of you know 00:03:11.32\00:03:13.05 that in Galatians 00:03:13.05\00:03:14.22 we read that wonderful passage 00:03:14.22\00:03:16.32 about the fruit of the Spirit. 00:03:16.56\00:03:18.83 So when we accept Jesus 00:03:19.13\00:03:20.70 as our Savior 00:03:20.70\00:03:21.33 and the Holy Spirit 00:03:21.33\00:03:22.13 comes into our hearts, 00:03:22.13\00:03:23.26 we receive 00:03:23.26\00:03:24.37 the fruit of the Spirit. 00:03:24.37\00:03:25.57 And what is the fruit 00:03:25.57\00:03:26.33 of the Spirit include? 00:03:26.33\00:03:27.50 It includes love, joy, peace, 00:03:27.50\00:03:31.04 long suffering, gentleness, 00:03:31.27\00:03:33.84 goodness, faith, meekness. 00:03:34.08\00:03:37.15 And then what? 00:03:37.35\00:03:38.85 Temperance or self-control. 00:03:38.85\00:03:41.48 Why is this so exciting to me? 00:03:42.22\00:03:44.72 Temperance is really 00:03:44.72\00:03:46.25 at the foundation 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.16 of any kind of fast. 00:03:47.16\00:03:49.46 And God is telling you 00:03:49.46\00:03:50.83 that the Holy Spirit gives you 00:03:50.83\00:03:52.53 temperance, gives you 00:03:52.53\00:03:53.50 self-control, gives you 00:03:53.50\00:03:54.66 the ability, 00:03:54.66\00:03:55.93 in essence, to say no 00:03:55.93\00:03:58.00 to things that are harmful 00:03:58.00\00:03:59.60 and to say yes 00:03:59.60\00:04:01.37 to things 00:04:01.37\00:04:01.84 that are good in moderation. 00:04:02.04\00:04:04.04 That is a promise. 00:04:04.67\00:04:06.88 Now, don't miss this. 00:04:06.88\00:04:09.08 If you haven't heard me 00:04:09.08\00:04:10.05 say it already, 00:04:10.05\00:04:11.25 and some of you have 00:04:11.25\00:04:12.65 been with us 00:04:12.65\00:04:13.21 from the first presentation, 00:04:13.31\00:04:15.92 Isaiah 58 tells us 00:04:15.92\00:04:18.12 that the true spirit of fasting 00:04:18.12\00:04:20.22 is one 00:04:20.22\00:04:20.82 that seeks a fast 00:04:20.82\00:04:22.92 from doing our own pleasure. 00:04:22.92\00:04:24.23 It's the whole idea 00:04:24.23\00:04:25.03 of living for God 00:04:25.03\00:04:26.39 and ministering to others. 00:04:26.39\00:04:27.93 And this is for everyone. 00:04:27.93\00:04:29.16 It doesn't matter 00:04:29.16\00:04:29.66 what our weight is. 00:04:29.66\00:04:30.60 So I'm telling you, 00:04:30.60\00:04:31.53 there's an opportunity 00:04:31.53\00:04:32.43 to go on this journey with us, 00:04:32.43\00:04:34.20 even though the program 00:04:34.20\00:04:35.17 is especially crafted 00:04:35.17\00:04:36.50 for those who need to 00:04:36.50\00:04:37.57 to lose some pounds. 00:04:37.57\00:04:38.77 We are going to be 00:04:38.77\00:04:39.37 including in the program, 00:04:39.37\00:04:41.01 special help 00:04:41.01\00:04:42.18 for those who need, 00:04:42.18\00:04:43.24 listen carefully, 00:04:43.24\00:04:44.35 to gain weight 00:04:44.35\00:04:45.45 because it's a weight 00:04:45.45\00:04:46.41 optimization program. 00:04:46.41\00:04:48.15 You say, 00:04:48.15\00:04:48.48 wait a minute, 00:04:48.55\00:04:49.22 now, wait a minute, 00:04:49.22\00:04:50.22 I want to lose weight. 00:04:50.22\00:04:51.19 Why would I? 00:04:51.19\00:04:52.22 How can a program 00:04:52.22\00:04:53.05 help me lose weight 00:04:53.05\00:04:54.89 and someone else gain weight? 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.12 Well, we're going to tell you 00:04:56.12\00:04:57.03 specific things that you can do 00:04:57.03\00:04:58.53 to tailor the program 00:04:58.53\00:04:59.89 to meet your own needs. 00:04:59.89\00:05:00.96 So it's not a 00:05:00.96\00:05:01.40 one size fits all. 00:05:01.46\00:05:02.66 And this is really 00:05:02.66\00:05:03.60 exciting to me 00:05:03.60\00:05:04.17 about the program 00:05:04.17\00:05:04.83 because I think that's 00:05:04.83\00:05:05.73 what frustrates a lot of people 00:05:05.73\00:05:07.24 with any kind of 00:05:07.24\00:05:08.07 a health program. 00:05:08.07\00:05:09.10 And so this is an 00:05:09.10\00:05:09.90 individualizable program 00:05:09.90\00:05:11.97 that we're going to help you 00:05:11.97\00:05:13.21 with no matter what 00:05:13.21\00:05:15.24 your weight is. 00:05:15.24\00:05:16.61 Let me share 00:05:16.61\00:05:17.11 something with you. 00:05:17.11\00:05:18.28 Many of you know 00:05:18.28\00:05:19.51 that Seventh-day 00:05:19.51\00:05:20.18 Adventist for decades, 00:05:20.18\00:05:22.18 for well over a century, 00:05:22.18\00:05:23.42 in fact, 00:05:23.42\00:05:24.19 have been very active 00:05:24.19\00:05:25.55 helping communities. 00:05:25.55\00:05:27.72 Helping the health 00:05:27.96\00:05:28.72 of their communities. 00:05:28.72\00:05:29.72 And I know some of you 00:05:29.72\00:05:30.43 say, well, 00:05:30.43\00:05:30.73 I wish we were doing more. 00:05:31.06\00:05:32.06 Well, 00:05:32.06\00:05:32.33 we're trying to do that here 00:05:32.73\00:05:33.66 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. 00:05:33.66\00:05:34.76 And I know 00:05:34.76\00:05:35.30 others are doing that 00:05:35.30\00:05:36.26 many places 00:05:36.26\00:05:37.00 throughout the world. 00:05:37.00\00:05:37.80 As we think about that, 00:05:38.77\00:05:40.47 one of the books 00:05:40.47\00:05:41.37 that has guided Seventh-day 00:05:41.37\00:05:42.67 Adventist for many years 00:05:42.67\00:05:43.81 is a book called 00:05:43.81\00:05:44.44 Councils on Diet and Foods. 00:05:44.44\00:05:46.51 Some amazing insights 00:05:46.84\00:05:48.31 into a variety 00:05:48.31\00:05:49.31 of health principles, 00:05:49.31\00:05:50.21 especially relating 00:05:50.21\00:05:51.48 to dietary principles. 00:05:51.48\00:05:52.98 But I want you to notice 00:05:52.98\00:05:53.95 the balanced council 00:05:53.95\00:05:55.18 about fasting that 00:05:55.18\00:05:56.22 we find in this book 00:05:56.22\00:05:57.12 on page 189. 00:05:57.12\00:05:58.75 The spirit of true 00:05:58.75\00:06:00.32 fasting and prayer 00:06:00.32\00:06:02.02 is the spirit 00:06:02.02\00:06:02.86 which yields mind, heart 00:06:02.86\00:06:04.83 and will to God. 00:06:04.83\00:06:06.19 Who do you think would benefit 00:06:06.19\00:06:07.46 from this type of fast? 00:06:07.46\00:06:09.73 Everybody, right? 00:06:09.73\00:06:11.13 True fasting and prayer. 00:06:11.13\00:06:12.30 We should all have that 00:06:12.30\00:06:13.20 spirit of yielding. 00:06:13.20\00:06:14.57 Our minds, 00:06:14.57\00:06:15.20 our hearts are wills to God. 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.57 That book also has another 00:06:18.61\00:06:20.94 bit of counsel 00:06:20.94\00:06:21.74 that applies to all of us. 00:06:21.74\00:06:23.58 And it's this. 00:06:23.58\00:06:24.71 The true fasting, 00:06:24.71\00:06:25.91 which should be recommended 00:06:25.91\00:06:27.05 to all, is abstinence 00:06:27.05\00:06:29.12 from every stimulating 00:06:29.12\00:06:31.25 kind of food 00:06:31.25\00:06:32.32 and the proper 00:06:32.32\00:06:32.99 use of wholesome, simple food 00:06:32.99\00:06:35.09 which God has provided 00:06:35.26\00:06:36.46 in abundance. 00:06:36.46\00:06:37.49 Now, think about this 00:06:37.49\00:06:38.23 for a minute. 00:06:38.23\00:06:39.13 It's talking about fasting. 00:06:39.59\00:06:41.36 But what you see clearly in 00:06:41.36\00:06:43.30 this reference is not fasting 00:06:43.30\00:06:46.67 in the sense of you 00:06:46.67\00:06:47.64 only drinking water 00:06:47.64\00:06:49.10 for the next 40 days. 00:06:49.10\00:06:50.67 It's talking about eating 00:06:50.67\00:06:52.24 wholesome, simple food. 00:06:52.24\00:06:53.98 But it's talking 00:06:55.01\00:06:55.64 about avoiding those things 00:06:55.64\00:06:57.41 that would undermine 00:06:57.41\00:06:58.31 our health. 00:06:58.31\00:06:58.71 Here in this context, 00:06:58.88\00:07:00.08 stimulants, okay?
