Well, welcome again to session number four 00:00:15.64\00:00:18.15 of our series on the great conflict between good and evil. 00:00:18.18\00:00:22.82 Our official title is, The Great Cosmic Controversy; 00:00:23.25\00:00:27.36 How God Clears His Name From All False Charges. 00:00:27.89\00:00:31.63 And before we have a review of our last session 00:00:31.89\00:00:34.86 and enter some new territory, we do want to ask for the Lord 00:00:34.96\00:00:38.63 to bless our season together. 00:00:38.67\00:00:40.57 And so I invite you to bow your heads with me as we pray. 00:00:40.60\00:00:43.94 Father in heaven, thank You for the privilege of 00:00:44.37\00:00:47.18 gathering together with the assurance that Your Spirit 00:00:47.21\00:00:50.68 and Your angels will be with us. 00:00:50.71\00:00:52.48 We ask, Lord, that You will give us clear minds 00:00:52.98\00:00:55.75 and You will give us sensitive open hearts 00:00:56.08\00:00:59.85 so that we might understand and receive the seed of truth 00:01:00.06\00:01:04.23 that You will plant today. 00:01:04.26\00:01:05.96 I also ask that You will bless all of those who will be 00:01:06.33\00:01:08.63 watching this program through television, and on dvd's, 00:01:08.66\00:01:12.20 and different media. 00:01:12.23\00:01:13.57 I ask, Lord, that You will bring conviction to each heart. 00:01:13.60\00:01:16.64 We thank You for the privilege of prayer 00:01:16.91\00:01:18.91 and because we know that You have heard us. 00:01:19.11\00:01:21.28 Because we ask it in the precious name of Jesus, amen. 00:01:21.44\00:01:25.21 Well let's review what we studied last time. 00:01:26.11\00:01:28.98 We studied the first step that Jesus takes in solving 00:01:29.02\00:01:34.09 the great cosmic controversy between Christ and Satan. 00:01:34.12\00:01:39.29 So I'm just going to mention the main points of what we studied 00:01:39.59\00:01:42.73 in our last subject together. 00:01:42.76\00:01:44.40 First of all, we mentioned that Jesus came to this earth 00:01:45.00\00:01:48.10 with the express purpose of vindicating 00:01:48.60\00:01:51.54 the character of God. 00:01:51.57\00:01:52.94 We also noticed that according to the Bible 00:01:53.61\00:01:56.08 Jesus created every single person that lives 00:01:56.11\00:01:59.61 upon this earth. 00:01:59.65\00:02:00.98 And therefore, because Jesus created all, 00:02:01.18\00:02:03.79 He is responsible for the existence of every single person 00:02:03.99\00:02:08.12 that lives in this world. 00:02:08.16\00:02:09.76 He's not responsible for their sin, 00:02:09.96\00:02:12.19 but He is responsible for their existence. 00:02:12.59\00:02:14.90 Because we did not choose to exist. 00:02:14.93\00:02:17.73 Then we noticed also that the law of God requires 00:02:18.00\00:02:21.40 absolute sinless perfection, absolute righteousness. 00:02:21.44\00:02:27.08 And we noticed that if we do not render the law 00:02:27.48\00:02:30.25 perfect righteousness, the law demands that the penalty 00:02:30.28\00:02:34.78 of death be applied. 00:02:34.82\00:02:36.89 Now God had to be faithful to His word. 00:02:37.45\00:02:40.06 If God did not require a perfect life in harmony with the law, 00:02:40.42\00:02:45.39 and if God did not require death for those who do not 00:02:45.66\00:02:49.30 offer perfection to the law, then God would have problems 00:02:49.33\00:02:53.64 with His integrity. 00:02:53.67\00:02:55.00 God would be lying. 00:02:55.37\00:02:57.07 And so God had to require a perfect life, 00:02:57.41\00:03:00.41 and He had to require the death of those who do not 00:03:00.44\00:03:03.75 offer the law perfect righteousness. 00:03:03.78\00:03:06.65 But the Bible tells us that no one on earth can offer the law 00:03:07.02\00:03:11.59 what the law requires. 00:03:11.62\00:03:13.12 No one on earth can offer the law sinless perfection 00:03:13.15\00:03:17.73 or absolute righteousness. 00:03:17.76\00:03:20.10 And so the result is that every single person in this world 00:03:20.43\00:03:25.47 is on death row. 00:03:25.50\00:03:27.70 Because we cannot offer the law sinless perfection, 00:03:28.07\00:03:31.81 the law says, "You must die." 00:03:31.84\00:03:34.14 And because all have sinned, all are subject to death. 00:03:34.18\00:03:38.48 We also noticed last time that Satan tried to put a 00:03:38.81\00:03:41.88 contradiction between two aspects of God's character. 00:03:41.92\00:03:45.59 First of all, he tried to put a conflict with the 00:03:45.79\00:03:49.12 justice of God, and secondly, with the love and mercy of God. 00:03:49.16\00:03:53.19 Basically what Satan said to God is this: 00:03:53.50\00:03:56.26 "If You do not punish the sinner with death, You're not just. 00:03:56.56\00:04:01.60 Your justice demands the death of the sinner. 00:04:01.64\00:04:04.24 But if You destroy the sinner, how is it that a God of love 00:04:04.51\00:04:08.54 would destroy the creatures that He made?" 00:04:08.58\00:04:11.05 And so there was an apparent contradiction between the 00:04:11.35\00:04:13.98 love and the justice of God. 00:04:14.02\00:04:16.45 The human race needed someone that could solve this problem. 00:04:17.25\00:04:22.16 Someone who could offer a perfect life to the law 00:04:22.36\00:04:26.56 and could suffer the death that the law requires. 00:04:26.66\00:04:30.63 Unfortunately, within the human race there was no one 00:04:30.93\00:04:34.24 who could live that perfect life or could pay the penalty of sin. 00:04:34.44\00:04:40.31 And we noticed last time that if anyone was going to 00:04:41.14\00:04:45.21 redeem the inheritance that was lost and free the individual 00:04:45.25\00:04:50.52 from the slavery into which he or she had sold themselves, 00:04:50.55\00:04:54.82 it was necessary for the redeemer to be a next of kin. 00:04:55.02\00:04:58.79 But the problem is that within the human race 00:04:59.36\00:05:02.20 we have no next of kin that had not sold his inheritance 00:05:02.33\00:05:06.74 or sold himself into slavery. 00:05:06.77\00:05:08.70 So there was no one within the human race 00:05:08.80\00:05:11.47 that could redeem the lost inheritance and could redeem 00:05:11.67\00:05:15.88 those who had sold themselves into slavery. 00:05:15.98\00:05:18.68 But God had a solution. 00:05:19.11\00:05:20.65 And that solution was to send Jesus Christ. 00:05:21.08\00:05:24.65 He who created every person in this world 00:05:24.92\00:05:28.22 offered to come to this world to live the perfect life 00:05:28.26\00:05:32.79 that the law requires. 00:05:32.83\00:05:34.30 To offer the law perfect righteousness in place of 00:05:34.33\00:05:38.30 every single person who has ever lived 00:05:38.33\00:05:41.04 in the history of planet earth. 00:05:41.07\00:05:43.37 And the Bible tells us that the Word was made flesh 00:05:43.94\00:05:48.74 and dwelt among us. 00:05:48.78\00:05:50.51 The word, "dwelt," means, pitched His tent among us. 00:05:50.55\00:05:54.28 He came to live in the camp of the Sanctuary 00:05:54.32\00:05:57.35 where sinners live to face the temptations 00:05:57.39\00:06:00.19 that we suffer in the camp, but with one difference. 00:06:00.22\00:06:03.56 Even though He was tempted in all things, 00:06:03.59\00:06:06.03 the Bible says that He never sinned. 00:06:06.13\00:06:09.33 He wove a robe of perfect righteousness 00:06:09.36\00:06:13.34 that He could offer the law in place of every single 00:06:13.37\00:06:17.11 human being who has ever lived in the history of planet earth. 00:06:17.14\00:06:21.54 That's great news. 00:06:21.64\00:06:23.08 So the first step was to offer the law what the law requires. 00:06:23.31\00:06:27.58 The law requires absolute perfection, so Jesus said, 00:06:27.62\00:06:31.05 I am going to live the life in place of all of My creatures, 00:06:31.09\00:06:35.19 and I'm going to overcome temptation, 00:06:35.22\00:06:37.69 and I am going to offer absolute sinless perfection, 00:06:37.89\00:06:41.63 righteousness, to the law. 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.83 But this was not sufficient to solve the problem of sin. 00:06:44.27\00:06:50.11 It wasn't enough for Jesus to live a perfect sinless 00:06:50.77\00:06:54.84 righteous life in our place. 00:06:54.88\00:06:57.48 Jesus also had to suffer death. 00:06:58.01\00:07:00.92 You see, we had a double problem. 00:07:01.15\00:07:03.08 First of all, we can't offer the law the perfection 00:07:03.35\00:07:05.85 that the law requires. 00:07:05.89\00:07:07.22 And secondly, because we cannot offer the perfection, 00:07:07.42\00:07:10.36 the law says, "You must die." 00:07:10.63\00:07:12.73 So Jesus not only had to live for us, He also had to what? 00:07:12.76\00:07:17.53 He also had to die for us, bearing the sins 00:07:17.57\00:07:21.67 of the whole world. 00:07:21.70\00:07:23.44 Satan placed God in what appeared to be 00:07:23.84\00:07:27.14 an unsolvable dilemma. 00:07:27.18\00:07:29.41 Between a rock and a hard place. 00:07:29.78\00:07:32.11 Basically he said to God, "You told man 00:07:32.48\00:07:35.85 that the wages of sin is death. 00:07:35.88\00:07:37.99 If You don't execute the sentence of death 00:07:38.32\00:07:41.32 like You said You would, You are a liar. 00:07:41.36\00:07:44.76 And if You do execute the sentence, then You are not 00:07:44.96\00:07:49.70 a God of love." 00:07:49.73\00:07:51.53 A conflict apparently between the love of God 00:07:51.57\00:07:55.80 and His justice. 00:07:55.84\00:07:57.37 But God had the answer to this dilemma. 00:07:57.41\00:08:01.54 God solved the seeming contradiction 00:08:01.58\00:08:04.81 in God's character. 00:08:04.91\00:08:06.51 You see, after Jesus lived a perfectly righteous life 00:08:06.78\00:08:10.92 to offer the law of God in place of every single being 00:08:11.12\00:08:14.99 who has ever lived, Jesus then took upon Himself 00:08:15.02\00:08:20.13 all of the sins that have been committed, 00:08:20.33\00:08:23.20 all the sins that are being committed, 00:08:23.23\00:08:25.83 and all of the sins that are yet to be committed, 00:08:25.87\00:08:28.74 Jesus took all of those upon Himself. 00:08:28.77\00:08:32.24 In other words, the sins of the whole world 00:08:32.54\00:08:35.48 were credited to Jesus. 00:08:35.51\00:08:37.41 They were imputed to Jesus. 00:08:37.45\00:08:39.38 They were placed in the account of Jesus 00:08:39.41\00:08:42.12 even though those sins were not His. 00:08:42.15\00:08:45.29 They were imputed to Him, they were credited to Him, 00:08:45.39\00:08:48.86 even though they were not His. 00:08:48.89\00:08:50.83 In this way, God showed His justice. 00:08:51.23\00:08:54.36 Because sin was punished just like God said. 00:08:54.50\00:08:57.30 With death. 00:08:57.33\00:08:58.67 But God also showed His love, because the death need not 00:08:58.70\00:09:02.10 be suffered by the sinner. 00:09:02.14\00:09:03.54 The death was suffered by a member of the Godhead. 00:09:03.57\00:09:06.64 And so God solved the problem. 00:09:06.78\00:09:08.98 He said, "I am going to satisfy the justice of the law. 00:09:09.18\00:09:12.91 Because Jesus is going to bear the sins of the world 00:09:12.95\00:09:15.72 and He is going to suffer the penalty, just like I said. 00:09:15.75\00:09:18.72 The wages of sin is death; and He's going to suffer it 00:09:18.75\00:09:21.79 in place of every single human being. 00:09:21.82\00:09:23.73 But at the same time, I am going to show My love. 00:09:23.93\00:09:26.16 Because the sentence of death is not going to be executed 00:09:26.19\00:09:29.90 upon the sinner. 00:09:29.93\00:09:31.27 It will be executed upon a member of the Godhead; 00:09:31.30\00:09:34.80 My beloved Son." 00:09:34.84\00:09:36.20 So the Bible tells us that Jesus, after He lived 00:09:36.87\00:09:40.24 His perfect life, Jesus became a vicarious sacrifice for us. 00:09:40.28\00:09:46.51 In other words, He took the place of every single sinner 00:09:46.55\00:09:51.05 who has ever lived in the history of planet earth. 00:09:51.09\00:09:54.39 Let's notice several verses that we find in the Bible 00:09:54.59\00:09:57.63 that present Jesus Christ as our substitute, 00:09:57.83\00:10:01.50 the substitute for the sins of the whole world. 00:10:01.53\00:10:04.43 Well begin with Exodus 12:5-6. 00:10:04.73\00:10:08.80 Exodus 12:5-6 00:10:08.84\00:10:12.24 We read verse 5 last night, but now we're going to read verse 6. 00:10:12.44\00:10:16.08 It says there, speaking about the Passover lamb... 00:10:16.11\00:10:20.05 You remember, we mentioned that represents 00:10:24.85\00:10:26.76 the perfect life of Jesus, the fact that the 00:10:26.79\00:10:28.89 lamb had no blemish? 00:10:28.92\00:10:30.26 Then it continues saying... 00:10:30.49\00:10:31.83 So what do you have there? 00:10:44.21\00:10:45.54 You have the perfect life of Jesus, because He's 00:10:45.57\00:10:47.61 the blameless Lamb, but you also have the fact that 00:10:47.64\00:10:50.35 the lamb was what? 00:10:50.38\00:10:51.71 Sacrificed. 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.08 You have the life of Jesus, the blameless life of Jesus, 00:10:53.11\00:10:56.08 and His what? 00:10:56.12\00:10:57.55 And His death. 00:10:57.59\00:10:59.49 Now I want us to notice also Leviticus 17:11. 00:10:59.85\00:11:03.43 This is a very interesting verse. 00:11:03.46\00:11:05.39 You know, in the Old Testament Israelites would bring 00:11:05.59\00:11:09.06 the victims, and those victims were sacrificed 00:11:09.10\00:11:12.93 and placed upon the altar. 00:11:12.97\00:11:14.30 But it really was not Israel that was bringing the victims. 00:11:14.34\00:11:18.54 You say, "What do you mean Israel wasn't 00:11:18.64\00:11:20.51 bringing the victims?" 00:11:20.54\00:11:21.88 You see, the Bible says that God was going to provide the victim. 00:11:21.91\00:11:25.75 Notice Leviticus 17:11. 00:11:25.78\00:11:28.62 It says... 00:11:28.65\00:11:29.98 And here, God is speaking. 00:11:33.09\00:11:34.49 So who gave the sacrifice upon the altar? 00:11:39.89\00:11:42.46 Was it the sinner or was it God? 00:11:42.50\00:11:44.47 God says, "I have given it to you." 00:11:44.67\00:11:46.60 Even though the Israelite brought the victim to be slain 00:11:46.94\00:11:50.37 and to be placed on the altar, that victim represented whom? 00:11:50.41\00:11:53.88 Jesus Christ. 00:11:53.91\00:11:55.24 So God says, "I have provided the victim to be placed 00:11:55.28\00:11:59.35 upon the altar." 00:11:59.38\00:12:00.72 Now notice 1 John 2:2. 00:12:01.25\00:12:03.69 For how many people did Jesus die? 00:12:03.72\00:12:05.25 How many of the sins of the world did Jesus 00:12:05.29\00:12:07.59 bear upon Himself? 00:12:07.62\00:12:08.96 He bore the sins of the whole world. 00:12:08.99\00:12:11.49 Every sin that has been committed, 00:12:11.53\00:12:13.36 every sin that is being committed, 00:12:13.40\00:12:15.66 every sin that will yet be committed, 00:12:15.70\00:12:17.63 Jesus bore upon Himself on the cross. 00:12:17.67\00:12:21.37 Notice 1 John 2:2. 00:12:21.40\00:12:24.54 That is Jesus. 00:12:26.64\00:12:27.98 See, John is saying, he's talking about believers, 00:12:34.15\00:12:36.72 he says, "He's the propitiation for our sins." 00:12:36.75\00:12:39.52 That is, for the sins of believers. 00:12:39.55\00:12:41.29 But now notice, "...and not for ours only..." 00:12:41.32\00:12:44.33 So the death of Jesus on the cross means that Jesus 00:12:48.53\00:12:53.57 was the propitiation, not only for the sins of those 00:12:53.60\00:12:56.40 who have accepted Jesus, but for the sins of the whole world. 00:12:56.44\00:13:00.98 Notice 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:13:01.31\00:13:04.35 2 Corinthians 5:21 00:13:04.58\00:13:06.82 This is one of my favorite verses in the whole Bible. 00:13:06.85\00:13:09.28 Once again, it presents the two aspects of Jesus. 00:13:09.48\00:13:12.59 His perfect life in the court 00:13:12.62\00:13:14.82 and His death at the altar of sacrifice. 00:13:14.86\00:13:17.26 Both things are mentioned in this verse. 00:13:17.29\00:13:19.36 Notice once again 2 Corinthians 5:21. 00:13:19.39\00:13:23.67 "For He," that is God the Father, 00:13:24.13\00:13:26.70 "made Him," that is Jesus, "who knew no sin..." 00:13:27.07\00:13:32.27 What aspect does that describe of Jesus? 00:13:32.37\00:13:34.64 His what? His perfect life, right? 00:13:34.68\00:13:37.01 He's the blameless sacrifice. 00:13:37.05\00:13:38.85 And so the first part of this verse says, 00:13:39.08\00:13:40.98 "For He," that is God the Father, 00:13:41.02\00:13:42.75 "made Him," Jesus, "who knew no sin..." 00:13:42.78\00:13:46.32 Now what's the second aspect? 00:13:46.35\00:13:48.22 "...to be sin for us..." 00:13:48.66\00:13:51.39 Are you catching the two points here? 00:13:51.49\00:13:53.33 He lived a perfect life, 00:13:53.36\00:13:54.86 and then the sins of the world were what? 00:13:54.90\00:13:57.73 Were placed upon Him. 00:13:57.77\00:13:59.10 Now why? 00:13:59.13\00:14:00.47 Why did Jesus live a perfect life? 00:14:00.50\00:14:02.44 Why did Jesus suffer death at the altar of sacrifice? 00:14:02.47\00:14:05.87 The second half of the verse is beautiful. 00:14:05.91\00:14:07.98 The second half of the verse says, "...that..." 00:14:08.01\00:14:10.68 In other words, "so that," He did this. 00:14:10.71\00:14:12.88 In other words, He did not sin, and He took sin upon Himself 00:14:13.08\00:14:17.92 so that He could do something. 00:14:17.95\00:14:19.35 He did this so that we could be recognized as being what? 00:14:26.03\00:14:31.30 Righteous before God. 00:14:31.40\00:14:33.10 Is it our own righteousness? 00:14:33.30\00:14:34.70 No. It is the righteousness of Jesus in our place. 00:14:35.00\00:14:39.07 So Jesus lived and died to be able to present 00:14:39.17\00:14:42.44 His righteousness as if it were our righteousness. 00:14:42.48\00:14:47.25 Notice Isaiah 53:3-6. 00:14:47.28\00:14:50.42 We're it's talking about the substitutionary sacrifice 00:14:50.45\00:14:53.89 of Jesus Christ. 00:14:53.92\00:14:55.26 The fact that He bore the sins of the whole world upon Himself. 00:14:55.29\00:14:58.29 Isaiah 53:3-6 00:14:58.76\00:15:01.90 Now notice the personal pronouns. 00:15:17.78\00:15:20.12 Wow! Smitten by God. 00:15:33.90\00:15:36.33 Was He a sinner? No. 00:15:36.36\00:15:38.33 Why was He smitten by God then? 00:15:38.37\00:15:40.34 Let's continue reading. 00:15:40.37\00:15:41.70 "And the Lord..." Notice this. 00:16:08.23\00:16:10.17 "The Lord..." That is, God the Father. 00:16:10.20\00:16:12.03 How much of the iniquity was laid upon Jesus? 00:16:20.68\00:16:23.28 All of the iniquity of all human beings 00:16:23.58\00:16:26.28 was laid upon Jesus Christ. 00:16:26.31\00:16:27.98 It was not His. It was imputed to Him. 00:16:28.02\00:16:30.62 In other words, it was credited to His account 00:16:30.85\00:16:33.49 even though it did not belong to Him. 00:16:33.52\00:16:35.62 Because He was suffering in place of human beings. 00:16:35.66\00:16:39.43 Are you understanding the substitutionary 00:16:39.46\00:16:41.80 sacrifice of Christ? 00:16:41.83\00:16:43.37 Now, is sin going to be punished then? 00:16:43.57\00:16:46.27 Is God going to keep His word? 00:16:46.74\00:16:48.10 Is He going to punish sin with death? 00:16:48.14\00:16:49.87 Yes. But who is going to suffer the penalty? 00:16:50.07\00:16:52.41 Jesus is. 00:16:52.87\00:16:54.21 Does God then show His love in that we don't 00:16:54.24\00:16:56.98 have to suffer the penalty? Sure. 00:16:57.01\00:16:58.81 Does He show His justice because sin really is punished? 00:16:58.85\00:17:02.28 Absolutely. 00:17:02.48\00:17:03.82 But the beauty is that Jesus does it in place 00:17:03.85\00:17:07.19 of every single human being who has ever lived 00:17:07.22\00:17:10.16 in the history of planet earth. 00:17:10.19\00:17:11.73 Notice Galatians 3:13. 00:17:11.93\00:17:14.20 This is another verse that describes the substitutionary 00:17:14.23\00:17:17.83 sacrifice of Christ, the vicarious sacrifice of Christ. 00:17:17.87\00:17:21.34 Galatians 3:13 00:17:21.37\00:17:23.51 It says, "Christ has redeemed..." 00:17:23.74\00:17:26.21 Now let's stop there for a moment. 00:17:29.78\00:17:31.41 What has Christ redeemed us from? 00:17:31.85\00:17:33.55 From the curse of the law. 00:17:34.08\00:17:36.12 Now you know what some people say? 00:17:36.72\00:17:38.15 They say, "See, the law is bad, because the law curses us." 00:17:38.45\00:17:42.49 And so the solution is, get rid of the law 00:17:43.36\00:17:45.46 and it won't curse us anymore. 00:17:45.49\00:17:47.20 Let me give you an illustration 00:17:47.76\00:17:49.33 so we understand how ridiculous that argument is. 00:17:49.36\00:17:52.17 You know, if you come to a stop light... 00:17:52.87\00:17:54.60 This is a brand new stop light we have here at the corner. 00:17:54.64\00:17:56.71 I don't know if you noticed that. 00:17:56.74\00:17:58.07 You know, my tendency is just to zip right through it. 00:17:58.11\00:18:00.61 Because, you know, before there was no stop light there. 00:18:00.81\00:18:04.08 But you know, that stop light is there. 00:18:04.28\00:18:06.11 Let's suppose that you're driving 50 miles an hour, 00:18:06.31\00:18:10.79 and the light is red, and you go through the red light. 00:18:11.09\00:18:13.92 And a policeman comes and he stops you, 00:18:13.96\00:18:15.99 and he's going to give you a ticket. 00:18:16.02\00:18:17.36 Let me ask you, are you under the curse of the law? 00:18:17.39\00:18:20.33 Oh, you better believe you're under the curse of the law. 00:18:21.13\00:18:23.50 You're going to get a ticket. 00:18:23.53\00:18:24.87 The law is going to curse you with a ticket, isn't it? 00:18:24.93\00:18:27.37 So the best solution to the problem is to 00:18:27.57\00:18:29.77 get rid of the stop light. 00:18:29.80\00:18:31.21 Does that make sense? 00:18:32.77\00:18:34.11 Get rid of the law. 00:18:34.28\00:18:35.61 No. 00:18:35.74\00:18:37.08 The problem is not with the law. 00:18:37.11\00:18:39.31 The problem is with the transgressor of the law. 00:18:39.35\00:18:42.55 So what needs to be fixed is not the law. 00:18:43.05\00:18:45.32 What needs to be fixed is the person who breaks the law. 00:18:45.35\00:18:48.12 Are you with me? 00:18:48.16\00:18:49.49 And so it says here in Galatians 3:13, 00:18:49.52\00:18:52.43 "Christ has redeemed us..." 00:18:52.46\00:18:53.80 Remember, that word, "redeemed," means, to buy back 00:18:53.83\00:18:56.63 by paying a price. 00:18:56.67\00:18:58.00 How did He redeem us from the curse of the law? 00:19:00.30\00:19:02.60 Why was Jesus cursed? 00:19:07.08\00:19:08.74 Because He took our sins upon Himself 00:19:08.98\00:19:11.85 and He was punished by His Father for our sins. 00:19:11.88\00:19:16.15 And so it says, "Christ has redeemed us..." 00:19:16.35\00:19:18.45 Go with me to 1 Peter 2:23-24. 00:19:28.06\00:19:31.30 You say, "Pastor, you're reading too many verses." 00:19:31.33\00:19:33.44 Yes. Praise the Lord. 00:19:33.47\00:19:34.80 That's a good thing. 00:19:34.84\00:19:36.17 Because we go here by what the Bible says. 00:19:36.20\00:19:38.37 Because the Bible is our authority, the Bible has power. 00:19:38.57\00:19:41.71 The preacher has absolutely no power. 00:19:41.74\00:19:43.61 Unless the preacher is preaching from Scripture. 00:19:43.98\00:19:47.95 Notice 1 Peter 2:23-24. 00:19:47.98\00:19:51.59 Speaking about Jesus... 00:19:52.65\00:19:54.26 Did Jesus bear our sins on the tree? 00:20:16.11\00:20:18.31 Yes. It says... 00:20:18.55\00:20:20.02 Are you catching the picture? 00:20:34.40\00:20:35.73 So did Jesus suffer for the sins of the whole world? 00:20:36.03\00:20:38.93 Yes. 00:20:38.97\00:20:40.30 Let's notice Romans 5 and we will read verse 6, 00:20:40.34\00:20:44.41 and then we will read verse 8. 00:20:44.44\00:20:46.31 Romans 5:6 and then verse 8. 00:20:46.34\00:20:50.25 It says here, and this is very interesting, 00:20:50.51\00:20:52.38 verse 6 reads in the following way... 00:20:52.41\00:20:55.22 "...in due time Christ died for the saints." 00:20:59.92\00:21:03.93 Thank you. 00:21:04.86\00:21:06.19 There's two of you that disagreed with me. 00:21:06.23\00:21:08.00 Notice what it says once again. 00:21:08.66\00:21:10.53 "...in due time Christ died for..." Whom? 00:21:13.34\00:21:16.60 "...for the ungodly." 00:21:16.64\00:21:18.67 Interesting. 00:21:19.04\00:21:20.38 So did Jesus bear the sins of everyone, of the ungodly? 00:21:20.41\00:21:24.61 Yes. Now notice verse 8. 00:21:24.65\00:21:27.58 Did Jesus die for sinners who have not received Him 00:21:39.76\00:21:42.83 as Savior and Lord? 00:21:42.86\00:21:44.20 Yes He did. 00:21:44.47\00:21:45.80 He bore the sins of the whole world. 00:21:45.93\00:21:48.34 Every sin that has been committed, 00:21:48.37\00:21:50.11 every sin that is being committed, 00:21:50.14\00:21:51.87 every sin that will be committed, 00:21:51.91\00:21:53.71 He bore those sins on His body on the tree. 00:21:53.74\00:21:57.31 The Bible makes that very, very clear. 00:21:57.41\00:21:59.48 Notice 1 Corinthians 15:3. 00:21:59.81\00:22:02.72 1 Corinthians 15:3 00:22:02.75\00:22:04.99 Here, the apostle Paul says... 00:22:05.25\00:22:06.59 So is the Bible very clear that Jesus bore the sins 00:22:19.37\00:22:22.20 of the whole world upon Himself and suffered the penalty 00:22:22.24\00:22:24.77 for the transgression of the law? 00:22:24.87\00:22:26.51 Is the Bible clear that Jesus lived the perfect life 00:22:26.94\00:22:29.81 that the law requires from us? 00:22:29.84\00:22:31.58 Absolutely. The Bible is crystal clear on this point. 00:22:31.81\00:22:35.08 Now do you remember that yesterday we studied 00:22:35.58\00:22:38.69 that Jesus is not only the unblemished victim, 00:22:38.72\00:22:42.39 Jesus is also the unblemished Priest. 00:22:42.42\00:22:45.56 You remember we read some text where it says 00:22:45.93\00:22:47.70 that the priest could not have any blemish? 00:22:47.90\00:22:50.80 And that the victim could not have any blemish? 00:22:51.07\00:22:53.60 Now you say, why in the world do you have a priest 00:22:53.77\00:22:56.07 without blemish and you have a victim without blemish? 00:22:56.10\00:22:58.71 I will explain it. 00:22:58.74\00:23:00.08 You see, in the Old Testament system you needed a priest 00:23:00.31\00:23:03.68 and you needed a victim. 00:23:03.71\00:23:05.05 But those two symbols are fulfilled in one person; 00:23:06.41\00:23:09.52 in Jesus Christ. 00:23:09.55\00:23:10.89 You see, Jesus is the Priest, the blameless Priest, 00:23:10.99\00:23:15.72 the unblemished Priest, who offers Himself as a victim. 00:23:15.76\00:23:20.30 So He is the unblemished Priest that offers Himself 00:23:21.16\00:23:25.10 as the unblemished victim. 00:23:25.13\00:23:26.70 That's what we find in Scripture in Hebrews 7:26-27. 00:23:27.50\00:23:32.34 Go with me to Hebrews 7:26-27. 00:23:32.37\00:23:34.98 So Jesus is the Priest, the blameless Priest, 00:23:35.08\00:23:38.41 that offers Himself as the sacrifice. 00:23:38.45\00:23:42.15 It says there in Hebrews 7:26-27... 00:23:42.35\00:23:45.12 "...who does not need daily, as those high priests..." 00:23:57.13\00:24:01.30 That is, the high priests of the Old Testament. 00:24:01.34\00:24:03.17 So who is the Priest? Jesus. 00:24:15.62\00:24:17.92 Who is the victim? Jesus. 00:24:17.95\00:24:19.79 Both had no blemish. 00:24:19.82\00:24:22.72 Are you following me? 00:24:23.22\00:24:24.56 Now, let's read a statement that we find in the 00:24:24.63\00:24:28.36 writings of Ellen White. 00:24:28.40\00:24:29.73 This is a beautiful statement. 00:24:29.76\00:24:31.10 Desire of Ages, page 753. 00:24:31.13\00:24:33.30 If you still don't believe that Jesus died for the sins 00:24:33.34\00:24:35.30 of the whole world, listen to this statement. 00:24:35.34\00:24:37.74 Desire of Ages, 753. 00:24:37.77\00:24:39.71 What is a substitute? 00:24:45.48\00:24:46.82 Someone who takes our place. 00:24:47.42\00:24:50.19 The word, "surety," means He's a guarantee, right? 00:24:55.56\00:24:58.19 How much of the iniquity was laid upon Him? 00:25:03.80\00:25:05.83 Of us all. 00:25:05.97\00:25:07.30 Was He a transgressor? 00:25:09.97\00:25:11.31 No, He was counted or reckoned a transgressor 00:25:11.34\00:25:14.08 because He was bearing our sins. 00:25:14.11\00:25:15.54 The what? The sin of what? 00:25:28.49\00:25:30.76 "...every descendant of Adam was pressing upon His heart." 00:25:31.16\00:25:35.33 So did Jesus bear the sins of all of the descendants of Adam? 00:25:35.36\00:25:39.93 Absolutely. 00:25:40.14\00:25:41.47 Both those who will be saved and those who will be lost. 00:25:41.50\00:25:44.14 Jesus bore their sins. 00:25:44.17\00:25:45.77 And so you're saying, "Well, that means 00:25:45.81\00:25:47.14 everybody is going to be saved." 00:25:47.18\00:25:48.51 No. You need to come to our next lecture. 00:25:48.54\00:25:50.11 Because we're going to study John 3:16. 00:25:51.21\00:25:53.52 You know, people love the first half of the verse. 00:25:53.55\00:25:55.35 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." 00:25:55.38\00:25:57.72 Hallelujah. Praise the Lord. 00:25:57.75\00:25:59.09 But the second half says that, "...whosoever believes in Him 00:25:59.12\00:26:01.56 should not perish, but have everlasting life." 00:26:01.76\00:26:04.09 So what Jesus did in the camp and in the court 00:26:04.13\00:26:07.53 is for everyone. 00:26:07.56\00:26:08.90 But you have to claim it in order to benefit from it. 00:26:09.30\00:26:14.64 Now let's take a look at the last three cries 00:26:14.90\00:26:18.47 of Jesus on the cross. 00:26:18.51\00:26:20.08 The last three cries of Jesus. 00:26:20.11\00:26:22.04 You know, people speak about the seven words that 00:26:22.24\00:26:24.48 Jesus spoke from the cross. 00:26:24.51\00:26:25.91 You've heard about that? 00:26:26.11\00:26:27.45 You know, during holy week in Latin America 00:26:27.48\00:26:29.38 they have an entire week of sermons, and each sermon 00:26:29.48\00:26:34.16 studies one of the sayings of Jesus on the cross. 00:26:34.19\00:26:37.06 Let's take a look at the last three cries 00:26:37.19\00:26:40.16 of Jesus on the cross. 00:26:40.20\00:26:41.53 The first is found in Matthew 27:46. 00:26:41.76\00:26:45.33 Matthew 27:46 00:26:45.37\00:26:47.90 Then after that, we're going to read Isaiah 59:2. 00:26:48.10\00:26:52.41 Notice Matthew 27:46. 00:26:52.44\00:26:55.41 This is a very short verse. 00:26:55.61\00:26:56.98 That is a cry of Jesus on the cross. 00:27:04.79\00:27:09.36 It wasn't the last, it wasn't the next to the last. 00:27:09.39\00:27:11.76 It was the third before the last. 00:27:11.79\00:27:13.93 Now He says, "Why have You forsaken Me?" 00:27:14.13\00:27:17.20 He's crying out to God. 00:27:17.23\00:27:18.57 Incidentally, the last three saying, He's crying out to God. 00:27:18.60\00:27:21.70 The first four sayings, He's not speaking only to God, 00:27:21.90\00:27:24.87 He's also speaking to individuals that are 00:27:25.07\00:27:27.08 at the foot of the cross, etc. 00:27:27.11\00:27:28.44 But the last three statements of Jesus 00:27:28.48\00:27:30.58 are directed at the Father. 00:27:30.61\00:27:32.18 Now the question is, why did Jesus cry out, 00:27:32.58\00:27:34.98 "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 00:27:35.02\00:27:38.42 Notice Isaiah 59:2 gives us the reason why Jesus 00:27:38.45\00:27:42.09 felt separated from Him Father. 00:27:42.12\00:27:43.73 It says in Isaiah 59:2... 00:27:44.46\00:27:46.73 So what is it that led Jesus to cry out, 00:27:59.11\00:28:01.24 "My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?" 00:28:01.28\00:28:04.01 The fact that He was separated from His Father 00:28:04.28\00:28:08.02 because He was bearing what? 00:28:08.05\00:28:10.19 Because He was bearing the sins of the world. 00:28:10.42\00:28:12.65 The sins of the world separated Him from His own Father. 00:28:12.75\00:28:16.96 And He felt forsaken by His Father. 00:28:17.19\00:28:19.79 In fact, in Gethsemane He begged His Father three times 00:28:19.83\00:28:22.73 that if the cup of the Father's wrath could pass from Him 00:28:22.93\00:28:27.07 that it would be so. 00:28:27.27\00:28:28.60 Nevertheless, He said, "Not My will be done, but Yours." 00:28:28.64\00:28:31.21 And the Bible tells us that in the garden of Gethsemane 00:28:31.31\00:28:33.98 He sweated great drops of blood because of the anguish 00:28:34.01\00:28:37.51 of feeling separated from His Father. 00:28:37.55\00:28:39.71 He was drinking the cup of the Father's wrath. 00:28:39.75\00:28:42.55 And on the cross He felt forsaken by His Father, 00:28:42.95\00:28:45.45 because sin separates from God. 00:28:45.49\00:28:48.82 Let's notice the next to last cry of Jesus on the cross. 00:28:49.49\00:28:54.23 It's found in John 19:30. 00:28:54.73\00:28:57.07 And remember that here He is speaking 00:28:57.10\00:28:58.90 to His Father once again. 00:28:58.93\00:29:00.87 It's very short. Three words. 00:29:00.97\00:29:03.51 Now the question is, what was finished? 00:29:07.54\00:29:09.54 When Jesus says to His Father, "It is finished," 00:29:09.84\00:29:12.35 what did Jesus mean? 00:29:12.38\00:29:13.72 I'll make it simple for you. 00:29:13.82\00:29:15.78 Then I'll read a statement from the spirit of prophecy. 00:29:15.82\00:29:17.82 What He was saying is, "Father, I have lived a perfect life, 00:29:17.85\00:29:21.96 and now I have paid the penalty for sin. 00:29:22.09\00:29:24.83 I have finished making provision for salvation 00:29:25.23\00:29:28.80 of every single human being on the planet." 00:29:28.83\00:29:31.50 In other words, the provision for salvation is finished. 00:29:32.20\00:29:35.90 It is complete. 00:29:35.94\00:29:37.27 No one has to live a perfect life anymore. 00:29:37.31\00:29:39.24 No one has to die for sin anymore. 00:29:39.27\00:29:41.41 As long as they meet the conditions 00:29:41.44\00:29:44.21 they can be saved now, because the provision is full 00:29:44.61\00:29:47.88 and it is complete. 00:29:47.92\00:29:49.28 Ellen White comments in, Desire of Ages, page 834, 00:29:49.85\00:29:54.32 when Jesus ascends to heaven and meets with His Father, 00:29:54.72\00:29:58.33 something very interesting. 00:29:58.36\00:29:59.73 I read... 00:29:59.76\00:30:01.10 "The compact..." That is, the covenant. 00:30:09.40\00:30:11.67 "Now He declares..." 00:30:14.14\00:30:15.48 Now He's in the presence of the Father. 00:30:15.51\00:30:16.85 He resurrected, went to heaven. 00:30:16.88\00:30:18.65 And He's going to go to His Father to ask His Father 00:30:18.68\00:30:21.32 if His sacrifice is sufficient. 00:30:21.35\00:30:23.72 It says, "Now He declares..." 00:30:23.75\00:30:25.09 What did Jesus say to His Father? 00:30:34.00\00:30:35.76 "I have completed the work of redemption." 00:30:35.80\00:30:37.83 And you say, "How is it that Ellen White then says 00:30:37.87\00:30:40.10 that Jesus went to heaven to complete the work 00:30:40.14\00:30:42.20 that He began on earth?" 00:30:42.24\00:30:43.57 We're going to study that a little bit later. 00:30:43.61\00:30:44.97 Because people say Ellen White talks 00:30:45.01\00:30:46.44 out of both sides of her mouth. 00:30:46.47\00:30:47.81 No, she doesn't talk out of both sides of her mouth. 00:30:47.84\00:30:49.98 You just have to take what she says in context; 00:30:50.15\00:30:53.01 when it is said and why it is said. 00:30:53.05\00:30:56.15 But here it clearly says, "Jesus says to His Father, 00:30:56.45\00:30:59.15 'I have completed the work of redemption.'" 00:30:59.19\00:31:01.32 But He completed the work of redemption 00:31:01.52\00:31:03.39 as a provision. 00:31:03.43\00:31:04.76 But He has not applied the benefits of that provision 00:31:05.49\00:31:09.26 to all of those who come to Him. 00:31:09.30\00:31:11.07 Are you with me or not? 00:31:11.10\00:31:12.43 In that sense, He went to heaven to complete the work 00:31:12.47\00:31:15.30 that He began on earth. 00:31:15.34\00:31:16.67 And then Jesus says to His Father, 00:31:17.07\00:31:19.37 "If Thy justice is satisfied..." 00:31:19.41\00:31:21.78 "I want to bring My people home. 00:31:27.95\00:31:29.55 Is what I have done sufficient to bring My people home? 00:31:30.25\00:31:32.95 I need to know whether it is." 00:31:32.99\00:31:34.32 And the Father says to Jesus, "It is enough. 00:31:34.36\00:31:37.83 Someday You will be able to bring Your people home." 00:31:38.09\00:31:41.23 And then Jesus makes His last declaration from the cross. 00:31:41.73\00:31:45.40 It's found in Luke 23:46. 00:31:45.43\00:31:48.70 Jesus says to His Father... 00:31:49.34\00:31:50.91 What was Jesus saying when He stated to His Father, 00:31:56.34\00:32:00.08 "Into Your hands I commend My spirit"? 00:32:00.12\00:32:02.58 What Jesus was saying is, "Father, You said that if 00:32:02.85\00:32:06.79 I fulfilled My part of the covenant, that even though 00:32:06.82\00:32:12.26 I should die, that You were going to safeguard My life 00:32:12.29\00:32:16.06 and I was going to resurrect." 00:32:16.10\00:32:17.67 Jesus is saying to His Father, "Safeguard My life. 00:32:17.70\00:32:21.14 Because You have promised that death is not the end. 00:32:21.17\00:32:23.84 That You will return My spirit to Me, and I will resurrect." 00:32:23.87\00:32:29.01 And so Jesus basically is saying, "I've completed 00:32:29.11\00:32:32.41 the provision for salvation. 00:32:32.45\00:32:34.22 The benefits are available, My perfect life 00:32:34.42\00:32:37.32 and My death for sin, for every sinner who has ever lived 00:32:37.35\00:32:41.82 in the history of planet earth." 00:32:41.86\00:32:44.36 And He commends His spirit into the safe keeping 00:32:44.39\00:32:48.03 of His Father. 00:32:48.06\00:32:49.40 Now there was another piece of furniture 00:32:49.70\00:32:51.93 in the court of the Sanctuary. 00:32:51.97\00:32:55.87 And that piece of furniture was found between 00:32:56.24\00:32:59.01 the altar of sacrifice and the Holy Place in the tent. 00:32:59.04\00:33:04.01 Go with me to Exodus 40:7 that gives us the location 00:33:04.48\00:33:09.58 of this piece of furniture in the Sanctuary. 00:33:09.68\00:33:13.56 Exodus 40:7 00:33:13.59\00:33:16.89 This is known as the laver. 00:33:17.09\00:33:19.56 It was a receptacle that had water in it. 00:33:19.79\00:33:22.56 Water for cleansing. 00:33:22.60\00:33:23.93 Water for washing. 00:33:24.03\00:33:25.63 It says there in Exodus 40:7... 00:33:25.97\00:33:28.37 So it's between the tent and the altar. 00:33:35.28\00:33:37.88 You have the altar, then you have the laver with the water, 00:33:37.91\00:33:41.08 and then you have the tent. 00:33:41.12\00:33:43.35 And it continues saying... 00:33:43.39\00:33:44.75 So the laver had water. 00:33:47.99\00:33:49.66 Now I want you to notice that Jesus 00:33:49.92\00:33:52.56 is walking through the Sanctuary. 00:33:52.59\00:33:54.03 Where does He begin His work? 00:33:54.06\00:33:55.56 He begins it in the camp by living His perfect life, right? 00:33:55.90\00:33:59.37 Then He moves where? 00:33:59.80\00:34:01.24 To the altar where He's sacrificed. 00:34:01.67\00:34:04.11 Then when He enters the Holy Place, He's going to 00:34:04.51\00:34:07.51 begin His work as what? 00:34:07.54\00:34:09.34 As Intercessor. 00:34:09.48\00:34:10.81 So let me ask you, what would the laver represent? 00:34:10.85\00:34:13.08 Does the laver represent something between His death 00:34:13.11\00:34:15.95 and when He goes into the Holy Place? 00:34:15.98\00:34:17.55 It must be. 00:34:17.85\00:34:19.19 Because chronologically, Jesus is going step by step. 00:34:19.35\00:34:23.26 He lives His perfect life in the camp. 00:34:23.29\00:34:24.99 He dies at the altar. 00:34:25.26\00:34:26.83 At the laver He must do something that takes place 00:34:27.13\00:34:30.40 before He enters the Holy Place of the Sanctuary 00:34:30.43\00:34:33.94 upon His ascension. 00:34:33.97\00:34:35.30 So you say, "Pastor Bohr, what is represented by the laver, 00:34:35.50\00:34:40.31 which comes after His death on the altar 00:34:40.34\00:34:43.18 and before He appears before His Father 00:34:43.21\00:34:46.68 when He ascends to heaven?" 00:34:46.72\00:34:48.45 Well, the bottom line is that the laver represents 00:34:49.22\00:34:52.69 His resurrection from the dead. 00:34:52.72\00:34:55.56 Let's notice Titus 3:5. 00:34:56.09\00:34:59.56 Titus 3:5 00:34:59.76\00:35:02.63 We're going to read this verse, then I'm going to 00:35:02.66\00:35:04.17 make some comments about it. 00:35:04.20\00:35:05.97 Now notice the two key words. 00:35:30.73\00:35:32.29 "...washing of regeneration," and then it says, 00:35:32.93\00:35:36.90 "and renewing of the Holy Spirit." 00:35:36.93\00:35:39.17 Now we need to examine particularly the word, 00:35:39.20\00:35:42.90 "regeneration," that is used here. 00:35:42.94\00:35:45.34 It is only used three times in the New Testament, 00:35:46.04\00:35:48.81 the word, "regeneration." 00:35:48.84\00:35:50.38 And basically, it is a compound Greek word. 00:35:50.85\00:35:53.88 In other words, it's composed of two Greek words; 00:35:53.92\00:35:56.45 a preposition and a verb. 00:35:56.82\00:36:00.06 In Greek it's very common for verbs to have 00:36:00.29\00:36:03.19 prepositional prefixes. 00:36:03.39\00:36:05.76 Now the two words are, "palig," which means, "again," 00:36:05.99\00:36:11.17 and the word, "genesia," which means, "to live." 00:36:11.63\00:36:16.54 So basically the word, "regeneration," 00:36:16.74\00:36:20.38 means, "to live," what? 00:36:20.41\00:36:23.04 To live again. 00:36:23.08\00:36:24.75 And water is related to what? 00:36:25.35\00:36:28.22 To living again, in this verse. 00:36:28.25\00:36:30.89 Now it's interesting to notice that this same word 00:36:31.15\00:36:34.59 is used in two other places in the New Testament. 00:36:34.69\00:36:38.36 Let me mention those places for you. 00:36:38.39\00:36:40.73 In the parallel passages, in Mark 10:30 and in Luke 18:30, 00:36:40.76\00:36:46.84 it's not translated, "regeneration." 00:36:48.04\00:36:51.27 It is translated, "the age to come." 00:36:51.54\00:36:54.84 Now let me ask you, what is the dividing point 00:36:55.61\00:36:58.15 between this age and the age to come? 00:36:58.18\00:37:00.62 It is the resurrection. 00:37:01.38\00:37:02.72 Let me prove it to you. 00:37:02.75\00:37:04.09 Go with me to Luke 20:34-36. 00:37:04.12\00:37:08.22 Luke 20:34-36 00:37:08.26\00:37:12.06 This is the imaginary scenario of the seven spouses. 00:37:12.33\00:37:16.70 Remember the seven spouses that died? 00:37:16.73\00:37:18.53 Now notice what we find in Luke 20:34-36. 00:37:18.63\00:37:22.87 "...this age..." 00:37:28.58\00:37:29.91 That's the time that we live in, right? 00:37:33.68\00:37:36.25 "...that age..." 00:37:41.16\00:37:42.49 That's the future age, right? 00:37:42.72\00:37:44.33 And what is the next expression, "...and the..." what? 00:37:44.93\00:37:47.40 "...and the resurrection from the dead..." 00:37:47.76\00:37:49.33 What is it that divides this age from the next age? 00:37:49.36\00:37:52.07 The resurrection. 00:37:52.33\00:37:53.67 And remember that this is the same translation 00:37:53.70\00:37:57.97 of the word that we just noticed; "paliggenesia." 00:37:58.01\00:38:00.68 And so it says, "But those who are counted worthy..." 00:38:01.01\00:38:03.28 So what is represented by the laver 00:38:22.03\00:38:25.67 or the water of regeneration? 00:38:25.70\00:38:27.80 It has to do with what? 00:38:27.84\00:38:29.40 It has to do with the resurrection of Jesus. 00:38:29.44\00:38:33.44 So the laver represents the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:38:33.61\00:38:37.41 Are you following me or not? 00:38:37.45\00:38:38.78 In a few moments I'm going to give you additional evidence. 00:38:38.81\00:38:41.25 Now a question that often comes up is this: 00:38:41.55\00:38:44.35 Who resurrected Jesus? 00:38:44.85\00:38:47.59 You know, if you look at the Bible, sometimes it says that 00:38:48.12\00:38:50.56 God the Father resurrected Jesus. 00:38:50.59\00:38:52.09 In fact, most of the time it says God the Father 00:38:52.13\00:38:54.23 resurrected Jesus. 00:38:54.26\00:38:55.60 There's a few text that say that the Holy Spirit 00:38:56.00\00:38:58.83 resurrected Jesus. 00:38:58.87\00:39:00.20 And then there is one text that we're going to look at 00:39:00.70\00:39:04.17 that gives the impression that Jesus resurrected Himself. 00:39:04.27\00:39:07.08 So the question is, who resurrected Jesus? 00:39:07.18\00:39:10.08 Well, let's take a look at John 10:17-18 00:39:10.65\00:39:14.25 and let's read it carefully, 00:39:14.38\00:39:16.18 and let's read both verses completely. 00:39:16.22\00:39:18.55 John 10:17-18 00:39:18.95\00:39:22.42 It says there, Jesus is speaking... 00:39:23.49\00:39:25.53 Now that's not a good translation of the Greek word, 00:39:42.18\00:39:45.15 "I have power..." 00:39:45.18\00:39:46.51 There is a word for power in the New Testament. 00:39:46.88\00:39:49.02 It's the word, "dunamis," that we get the word, 00:39:49.05\00:39:51.49 "dynamite," from. 00:39:51.52\00:39:52.85 This is not the word, "dunamis." 00:39:52.89\00:39:54.26 This is the word, "exousia." 00:39:54.29\00:39:56.46 It should be translated, "authority." 00:39:57.19\00:39:59.66 So notice what it continues saying here in John 10:17. 00:39:59.93\00:40:06.87 "I have authority to lay it down, 00:40:15.14\00:40:17.81 I have authority to take it up again." 00:40:17.85\00:40:20.45 Why did Jesus have authority to lay it down 00:40:20.48\00:40:23.05 and take it up again? 00:40:23.08\00:40:24.42 See, we've got to read the last little phrase of the verse. 00:40:25.69\00:40:28.76 He says what? 00:40:29.62\00:40:31.33 So did the Father have to give authority to Jesus 00:40:36.67\00:40:40.67 to come out of the grave through the life 00:40:40.70\00:40:42.97 that was within Jesus Himself? 00:40:43.00\00:40:44.97 Absolutely. 00:40:45.01\00:40:46.34 The text tells us it does. 00:40:46.37\00:40:47.88 Now let me read you an amazing statement from 00:40:48.28\00:40:50.48 the spirit of prophecy. 00:40:50.51\00:40:51.85 This is in, The Youth's Instructor, May 2, 1901. 00:40:51.88\00:40:55.75 Jesus was in the tomb, a prisoner of what? 00:41:11.43\00:41:13.67 Whose divine justice? 00:41:14.37\00:41:15.77 The Father's divine justice. 00:41:16.10\00:41:17.97 Jesus was responsible to the Judge of the universe, 00:41:22.78\00:41:25.98 because Jesus bore the sins of the world. 00:41:26.01\00:41:27.98 And then she states... 00:41:28.02\00:41:29.68 So what happens? 00:41:36.93\00:41:38.26 Jesus resurrects with the power that is within Himself. 00:41:38.29\00:41:40.86 But His Father authorizes Him to resurrect by the life 00:41:41.13\00:41:45.40 that is within Himself. 00:41:45.43\00:41:46.77 In other words, if the Father had not called Jesus 00:41:47.07\00:41:49.90 from the tomb, there would have been no resurrection. 00:41:49.94\00:41:53.88 Now, let me read you a statement about 00:41:54.71\00:41:57.65 the resurrection of Christ, how it happened. 00:41:57.68\00:41:59.85 It's found in, The Story of Jesus, 00:42:00.12\00:42:01.72 written by Ellen White, page 155. 00:42:01.75\00:42:04.25 He just kind of pushed it aside. 00:42:18.60\00:42:20.00 Do you remember the last words of Jesus on the cross? 00:42:33.11\00:42:35.28 "Father, into Your hands I commend My spirit." 00:42:35.68\00:42:38.32 He's saying, "I commend My life into Your hands." 00:42:38.35\00:42:40.29 Does the Father call Him out afterwards? 00:42:40.89\00:42:43.39 Yes. Did the Father preserve His life or His spirit? 00:42:43.49\00:42:46.73 Absolutely. 00:42:46.76\00:42:48.10 Now she continues saying... 00:42:48.30\00:42:49.76 Powerful statement. 00:43:01.68\00:43:03.35 And so, who resurrected Jesus? 00:43:03.78\00:43:05.65 It was by command of the Father that Jesus could take up His 00:43:05.75\00:43:09.62 own life, because the Father had given Him authority to do so. 00:43:09.65\00:43:13.89 It says so in John 10:18. 00:43:13.92\00:43:17.36 Incidentally, do you know that the Jewish feasts 00:43:17.93\00:43:20.73 follow the same order of the ministry of Jesus? 00:43:20.83\00:43:23.63 First of all, we have the Passover. 00:43:25.57\00:43:28.50 That's His death. 00:43:29.04\00:43:30.37 Then we have Unleavened Bread. 00:43:30.97\00:43:33.27 That's His burial. 00:43:33.61\00:43:34.94 Then you have First Fruits. 00:43:35.64\00:43:37.65 That's His resurrection. 00:43:37.95\00:43:40.22 And then you have the day of Pentecost. 00:43:40.48\00:43:43.52 That's when He begins to officiate in the Holy Place 00:43:43.55\00:43:46.99 of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:43:47.02\00:43:48.36 So the Hebrew feasts follow the order of the steps of Jesus 00:43:48.39\00:43:52.39 in the plan of salvation. 00:43:52.43\00:43:54.10 Now let's go back to the idea of the laver, 00:43:54.40\00:43:57.70 the laver of regeneration, which represents the resurrection. 00:43:57.73\00:44:01.87 When Jesus resurrected from the dead, 00:44:03.34\00:44:05.41 did He leave every vestige of death behind? 00:44:05.44\00:44:08.54 Did He totally cleanse Himself from death? 00:44:08.58\00:44:10.91 Notice Romans 6:9-10. 00:44:11.65\00:44:14.68 Romans 6:9-10 00:44:14.72\00:44:18.05 You see, just like the... Listen carefully. 00:44:18.55\00:44:20.72 Just as the priest would wash himself totally clean 00:44:20.76\00:44:25.13 before He entered the Holy Place to do a work of 00:44:25.49\00:44:29.16 intercession, Jesus had to wash Himself from every vestige 00:44:29.20\00:44:33.84 of sin before He could enter His service 00:44:33.87\00:44:37.94 in the heavenly Sanctuary in the Holy Place. 00:44:38.04\00:44:40.84 When the priest offered the sacrifice, 00:44:41.78\00:44:43.88 do you think that he was stained with blood? 00:44:44.08\00:44:45.95 That he had the signs of death upon himself? 00:44:46.15\00:44:48.75 Of course. 00:44:48.78\00:44:50.12 So what did he have to do before he entered the Holy Place 00:44:50.15\00:44:52.65 to minister in the Holy Place? 00:44:52.69\00:44:54.09 He had to go to the laver and he had to wash off every sign 00:44:54.12\00:44:58.06 or every vestige of death. 00:44:58.09\00:44:59.73 He had to be totally cleansed from death 00:45:00.30\00:45:02.50 and from signs of death. 00:45:02.53\00:45:03.87 And you know, the Bible says that touching a dead body 00:45:03.90\00:45:06.90 defiles, doesn't it? 00:45:06.94\00:45:08.54 That's what the writings of Moses says. 00:45:08.57\00:45:10.84 Now notice once again Romans 6:9-10. 00:45:11.17\00:45:14.18 So let me ask you, did Jesus totally leave death behind? 00:45:32.19\00:45:35.80 Did He, so to speak, cleanse Himself from death 00:45:35.83\00:45:38.83 when He resurrected from the dead to enter His next stage 00:45:38.87\00:45:43.17 in the plan of salvation? 00:45:43.20\00:45:44.81 Absolutely. 00:45:45.24\00:45:46.57 So you'll notice then that Jesus is following the 00:45:46.68\00:45:49.64 sequence of the Sanctuary. 00:45:49.68\00:45:51.28 He goes to the camp, lives His perfect life 00:45:51.81\00:45:54.62 as the blameless Lamb. 00:45:54.65\00:45:55.98 He goes to the altar, at the altar of sacrifice, 00:45:56.38\00:45:59.65 He bears the sins of the world and He suffers death. 00:45:59.85\00:46:03.29 At the laver He resurrects from the dead, 00:46:03.63\00:46:06.43 totally cleanses Himself from every vestige of death. 00:46:06.46\00:46:10.67 And in this way, He's totally clean to enter the next function 00:46:10.93\00:46:15.60 of His ministry which takes place in the Holy Place 00:46:15.64\00:46:19.57 of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:46:19.61\00:46:21.34 Now, a question that I ask quite frequently 00:46:22.44\00:46:27.25 wherever I go is whether Jesus forgave 00:46:27.68\00:46:32.15 people's sins at the cross? 00:46:32.19\00:46:33.89 And you know, I'm amazed at the answer I get in most 00:46:34.62\00:46:38.23 Seventh-day Adventist churches. 00:46:38.26\00:46:39.79 Not to say what non-Adventists would say. 00:46:40.73\00:46:43.16 You know, whenever I ask, "Did Jesus forgive 00:46:43.93\00:46:46.67 people's sins when He died on the cross," 00:46:46.70\00:46:49.14 almost always the resounding answer is, "Yes, He forgave 00:46:49.40\00:46:52.94 everybody's sins at the cross." 00:46:52.97\00:46:54.71 But the fact is, folks, that Jesus did not forgive 00:46:55.64\00:46:58.35 people's sins at the cross. 00:46:58.38\00:46:59.85 You say, "Now what do you mean?" 00:47:00.62\00:47:02.62 Listen, at the cross Jesus made provision 00:47:03.22\00:47:06.69 to forgive people's sins. 00:47:06.72\00:47:08.39 He provided the means whereby sins could be forgiven, 00:47:09.12\00:47:13.23 but He did not forgive people's sins at the cross. 00:47:13.33\00:47:16.77 You say, "Now, what do you mean?" 00:47:17.50\00:47:19.03 Let me ask you, what is the importance 00:47:19.63\00:47:21.54 of the resurrection of Jesus? 00:47:21.57\00:47:23.04 Why did Jesus resurrect? 00:47:23.14\00:47:24.67 Listen, folks, Jesus resurrected because He 00:47:25.27\00:47:27.71 had another function to perform in the Sanctuary. 00:47:27.74\00:47:30.11 If Jesus simply had died and gone to the grave 00:47:30.61\00:47:33.42 and He had stayed dead, all of us would be lost. 00:47:33.45\00:47:36.72 We would still be in our sins. 00:47:36.92\00:47:38.72 Because Jesus has to fulfill an additional function 00:47:39.05\00:47:43.39 in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary, 00:47:43.43\00:47:45.03 and He has to be alive to do it. 00:47:45.29\00:47:47.33 And so He had to resurrect to be able now to go to heaven 00:47:47.90\00:47:51.93 to give forgiveness to those who claim the benefits 00:47:51.97\00:47:55.57 of the life and the death of Jesus. 00:47:55.60\00:47:57.21 Now let's notice Romans 4:25. 00:47:57.41\00:48:00.51 Romans 4:25 00:48:00.61\00:48:03.68 A very interesting verse. 00:48:03.71\00:48:05.05 Speaking about Jesus, it says... 00:48:05.95\00:48:08.32 That's another way of saying, for our what? 00:48:13.62\00:48:16.02 For our sins, right. 00:48:16.59\00:48:18.19 Other versions say that He was raised for our justification. 00:48:30.54\00:48:34.01 So why was Jesus raised? 00:48:34.11\00:48:36.34 So that He could what? 00:48:36.38\00:48:37.71 So that He could justify us. 00:48:37.91\00:48:39.61 And you say, "Now wait a minute. 00:48:40.28\00:48:41.62 What is justification?" 00:48:41.65\00:48:42.98 Well let me read you a statement from the spirit of prophecy. 00:48:43.39\00:48:46.29 This is found in the book, Faith and Works, page 103. 00:48:46.55\00:48:49.79 If you've never read that book, I would really recommend 00:48:49.89\00:48:52.06 that you read that book. 00:48:52.09\00:48:53.43 It's a phenomenal book. 00:48:53.46\00:48:54.80 It's small, but it has a series of articles 00:48:54.83\00:48:57.63 that Ellen White wrote in, Signs of the Times, 00:48:57.67\00:48:59.67 and, Review and Herald, on righteousness by faith. 00:48:59.70\00:49:02.80 And this is a short statement, but very significant. 00:49:02.97\00:49:05.61 Because we just read that Jesus was raised 00:49:05.64\00:49:09.71 for our justification. 00:49:09.74\00:49:11.08 In other words, He was raised so that He could justify us. 00:49:11.11\00:49:13.38 Now what is justification? 00:49:13.42\00:49:14.98 Folks, it's simply a fancy theological word 00:49:15.28\00:49:18.49 that means, to receive pardon or forgiveness. 00:49:18.52\00:49:21.22 When you are forgiven, or when you are pardoned, 00:49:21.66\00:49:24.69 at that moment you receive justification. 00:49:24.96\00:49:27.33 Notice this statement... 00:49:27.53\00:49:28.86 Did you catch that? 00:49:36.20\00:49:37.54 So whenever you read the writings of the apostle Paul... 00:49:40.38\00:49:42.88 Which he wrote some things that are hard to be understood, 00:49:44.28\00:49:47.65 according to his colleague Peter. 00:49:48.15\00:49:50.05 So whenever you find the word, "justification," 00:49:50.32\00:49:52.52 you know that it means what? 00:49:52.55\00:49:54.82 It means pardon or forgiveness. 00:49:54.86\00:49:57.33 So why was Jesus raised? 00:49:57.46\00:49:59.33 He was raised so that we could be what? 00:49:59.36\00:50:02.00 So that we could be forgiven. 00:50:02.26\00:50:03.73 So did He forgive people at the cross? 00:50:03.77\00:50:05.83 No, He forgives people after His what? 00:50:06.03\00:50:08.70 After His resurrection. 00:50:08.90\00:50:10.27 Now let me give you another text that clearly proves this. 00:50:10.61\00:50:13.34 Go with me to 1 Corinthians 15, and we'll read verses 13-17. 00:50:13.38\00:50:21.58 This is a powerful passage on the resurrection of Christ. 00:50:21.62\00:50:24.55 1 Corinthians 15:13-17 00:50:24.75\00:50:28.66 How important is the resurrection of Jesus? 00:50:43.77\00:50:45.91 It's a matter of life and death. 00:50:47.41\00:50:48.74 Notice what it continues saying in verse 15. 00:50:48.88\00:50:51.45 So in other words, why would we even bother to 00:51:05.59\00:51:07.76 preach that Jesus resurrected? 00:51:07.80\00:51:09.13 We'd be lying. 00:51:09.16\00:51:10.50 So preaching would be futile. 00:51:10.70\00:51:12.37 It would be worthless. 00:51:12.40\00:51:13.80 Verse 16... 00:51:14.14\00:51:15.47 Now here comes the key verse, verse 17... 00:51:20.31\00:51:22.14 Did Jesus forgive people's sins at the cross? 00:51:31.25\00:51:33.66 No. 00:51:34.82\00:51:36.16 When do people receive forgiveness? 00:51:36.62\00:51:38.86 It's after Jesus what? Resurrects. 00:51:39.36\00:51:41.96 Because it say, you know, if Jesus did not resurrect, 00:51:42.00\00:51:44.70 you're still in your sins. 00:51:44.73\00:51:46.07 So His death did not take care of individual sins. 00:51:46.33\00:51:49.97 It made provision to forgive sin. 00:51:50.34\00:51:52.91 But it did not in actuality forgive the sins of individuals. 00:51:53.58\00:51:58.68 You say, "Why not?" 00:51:59.08\00:52:00.42 It's very simple. 00:52:00.55\00:52:01.88 You know, all I have to do is read one verse. 00:52:02.62\00:52:04.85 And we're going to study this in our next study. 00:52:04.89\00:52:07.42 We're going to study about Jesus, our Advocate, 00:52:07.46\00:52:10.13 our Intercessor, our Mediator. 00:52:10.16\00:52:11.99 See, that's the next stage in the ministry of Christ 00:52:12.33\00:52:15.60 in the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:52:15.63\00:52:16.97 If Jesus does not fulfill that next stage, 00:52:17.17\00:52:20.57 everything is lost. 00:52:20.60\00:52:21.94 Yes, Jesus would have lived a perfect life. 00:52:22.27\00:52:24.44 Yeah, He would have died carrying the sins of the world. 00:52:24.64\00:52:27.68 But there would be no forgiveness. 00:52:27.71\00:52:29.34 Because it's in the Holy Place when Jesus takes His life 00:52:29.68\00:52:33.45 and gives it to those who repent of sin, confess sin, 00:52:33.72\00:52:38.85 and have faith in Jesus. 00:52:38.89\00:52:40.26 It's when you receive Jesus as your Savior 00:52:40.72\00:52:43.73 that Jesus takes His death that He suffered for sin 00:52:43.76\00:52:47.23 and He places His death to your account 00:52:47.26\00:52:49.73 so that you don't have to die eternally. 00:52:49.76\00:52:51.80 Are you following me or not? 00:52:51.83\00:52:53.17 But it must be claimed. 00:52:53.34\00:52:54.77 You say, "Which verse is that, just one verse that proves 00:52:54.80\00:52:57.57 that forgiveness did not come at the cross?" 00:52:57.61\00:53:00.01 1 John 1:9 00:53:00.68\00:53:02.74 1 John 1:9 00:53:05.88\00:53:07.62 "If we confess our sins..." 00:53:09.28\00:53:12.35 Is that a conditional statement? 00:53:13.92\00:53:15.86 "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just..." to what? 00:53:16.83\00:53:22.13 "...to forgive us our sins and cleanse us 00:53:22.60\00:53:25.27 from all unrighteousness." 00:53:25.30\00:53:26.63 When does forgiveness come, 00:53:26.67\00:53:28.00 at the cross or when I confess my sins? 00:53:28.04\00:53:30.24 When I confess them. 00:53:30.44\00:53:31.77 So forgiveness is when I claim what Jesus did. 00:53:31.87\00:53:34.74 The provision is complete. 00:53:35.24\00:53:37.05 His life is enough to be in place of everyone's sinful life. 00:53:37.45\00:53:42.02 And His death is sufficient to pay for the death 00:53:42.28\00:53:45.25 of every single person. 00:53:45.29\00:53:46.62 Bu unless we claim it, we will still be in our sins. 00:53:46.65\00:53:49.59 Are you following me or not? 00:53:49.62\00:53:50.96 And that's the next stage of the ministry of Jesus Christ. 00:53:50.99\00:53:55.23 Now what arguments were answered by the death 00:53:55.33\00:53:58.73 of Jesus on the cross? 00:53:58.77\00:54:00.20 Number one, God is no respecter of persons, 00:54:00.37\00:54:04.57 because He did not spare His own Son. 00:54:04.61\00:54:07.28 See, the original argument was, "Oh, God has favorites. 00:54:07.78\00:54:10.45 You know, He favors His Son above everybody else." 00:54:10.48\00:54:12.68 But when He sent Him to die, He didn't even spare Him. 00:54:12.71\00:54:15.52 Second, God proved true in His word and just. 00:54:16.55\00:54:21.59 It was proved that the wages of sin is death. 00:54:22.26\00:54:24.96 Sin was punished. 00:54:25.56\00:54:27.30 The justice of God was executed upon Jesus, our substitute. 00:54:27.33\00:54:31.27 But also the love of God was revealed 00:54:31.63\00:54:34.67 because sinners need not suffer the penalty. 00:54:34.70\00:54:37.87 Jesus suffered the penalty. 00:54:37.91\00:54:39.64 If we accept Him, His death counts as if it were our death. 00:54:39.67\00:54:44.18 So the Godhead takes death upon itself, thus showing God's love. 00:54:44.38\00:54:48.92 Sin is punished. 00:54:49.02\00:54:50.35 God's justices is satisfied, but at the same time 00:54:50.39\00:54:53.39 He shows His love because He suffers the penalty 00:54:53.42\00:54:56.39 instead of us having to suffer the penalty. 00:54:56.42\00:54:59.29 Did Jesus show that it's possible to keep God's holy law? 00:55:00.56\00:55:04.07 You better believe He did. 00:55:04.37\00:55:05.97 He was tempted in all things, yet without sin. 00:55:06.30\00:55:10.11 Did God show that He's not selfish? 00:55:10.87\00:55:13.04 Oh, absolutely. 00:55:13.51\00:55:14.91 "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son." 00:55:14.94\00:55:17.81 The most precious thing in the universe. 00:55:17.85\00:55:20.18 God is a giving God. 00:55:20.22\00:55:22.08 God is a God who serves. 00:55:22.18\00:55:23.89 It reminds me of the time that Jesus says, 00:55:23.92\00:55:26.42 "The Son of Man has not come to be served, but to serve, 00:55:26.45\00:55:30.19 and to give His life a ransom for many." 00:55:30.23\00:55:33.03 See, the devil had said, "God is selfish. 00:55:33.13\00:55:35.26 God is a respecter of persons. 00:55:35.30\00:55:37.23 God cannot be just and save the sinner. 00:55:37.43\00:55:39.97 God doesn't love, because He has to punish the sinner with death. 00:55:40.00\00:55:43.24 And the law can't be kept." 00:55:43.27\00:55:44.74 All of these things were answered through 00:55:44.77\00:55:47.04 the first two stages of the ministration of Jesus Christ. 00:55:47.24\00:55:50.11 Are you with me? 00:55:50.15\00:55:51.48 Now, this still did not answer all of the questions 00:55:51.51\00:55:55.78 of the heavenly beings of the universe, 00:55:55.88\00:55:57.42 or even the human beings on this earth. 00:55:57.45\00:55:59.95 There were still things that needed to be clarified 00:56:00.32\00:56:03.39 before the inhabitants of the universe. 00:56:03.43\00:56:07.30 Jesus still needed to perform a work in the Holy Place 00:56:07.46\00:56:11.30 and in the Most Holy Place. 00:56:11.33\00:56:13.57 And in the court when He brought the sins out of the Sanctuary. 00:56:13.94\00:56:17.07 Only when Jesus completed His total ministry in the Sanctuary 00:56:17.11\00:56:22.44 would the entire universe be clear on every aspect 00:56:22.54\00:56:26.82 of the character of God. 00:56:26.85\00:56:28.38 I want to end by reading from, Desire of Ages, 761. 00:56:28.62\00:56:32.85 This is when Jesus died. 00:56:35.66\00:56:37.09 And now comes the part of the statement that I consider 00:57:05.02\00:57:07.92 the most important, and will set the stage for our study 00:57:07.96\00:57:11.16 in our next lecture. 00:57:11.19\00:57:12.63 "He," that is man, "must choose whom he will serve." 00:57:13.46\00:57:20.04 So the next step has to do with human choice. 00:57:20.64\00:57:24.64 The heavenly beings are going to see now 00:57:25.24\00:57:27.24 who is going to benefit from what Jesus did by His life 00:57:27.44\00:57:33.82 and by His death on the cross. 00:57:33.85\00:57:35.65 The angels are going to see that it is possible 00:57:35.68\00:57:38.45 for the sinner to be saved and for God to be righteous and true 00:57:38.49\00:57:43.36 and loving in all of His dealings with human beings. 00:57:43.39\00:57:47.03 So the next step has to do with choice. 00:57:47.13\00:57:50.77 When man chooses Jesus as Savior and Lord, 00:57:50.87\00:57:54.14 there's a new revelation to the angels of heaven 00:57:54.24\00:57:57.41 and to men concerning the character of God. 00:57:57.44\00:58:00.58 So don't miss the next exciting episode of this series. 00:58:00.78\00:58:05.01
