Well, welcome today to presentation number three 00:00:15.68\00:00:18.51 of this series on the vindication 00:00:18.55\00:00:21.85 of the character of God. 00:00:21.88\00:00:23.42 You'll notice that the title is, The Great Cosmic Controversy. 00:00:23.45\00:00:27.49 And the subtitle is, How God Clears His Name 00:00:27.52\00:00:31.59 of All False Charges. 00:00:31.73\00:00:33.43 Before we study today about the immaculate spotless Lamb, 00:00:33.70\00:00:39.10 we want to ask for the Lord's blessings. 00:00:39.40\00:00:41.10 So let's just bow our heads for a word of prayer. 00:00:41.14\00:00:43.41 Father in heaven, thank You for this beautiful day. 00:00:43.91\00:00:46.34 Thank You for life, thank You for health. 00:00:46.78\00:00:49.28 Thank You for all of Your abundant blessings. 00:00:49.48\00:00:52.05 Thank You for Your Word and for the privilege of studying 00:00:52.08\00:00:55.58 that Word freely. 00:00:55.62\00:00:57.39 We ask that You'll be with us through the ministry 00:00:57.65\00:00:59.89 of Your Holy Spirit and Your angels. 00:00:59.92\00:01:01.72 Help us to understand the importance of what 00:01:02.02\00:01:04.13 we will study today. 00:01:04.16\00:01:05.49 And we thank You for hearing our prayer, 00:01:05.56\00:01:07.56 for we ask it in the precious name of Jesus. 00:01:07.80\00:01:10.37 Amen. 00:01:10.40\00:01:11.73 Today we are going to begin studying the solution 00:01:14.40\00:01:18.61 that God has to the great controversy 00:01:18.64\00:01:21.71 between good and evil. 00:01:21.74\00:01:23.11 And basically, we're going to see that God solves this problem 00:01:23.48\00:01:27.62 by Jesus moving through the Sanctuary. 00:01:28.05\00:01:33.19 And so as we begin our study, we are going to take a look 00:01:33.22\00:01:37.86 at how Jesus moves in the Sanctuary step by step. 00:01:37.89\00:01:43.43 And of course, as we go along starting today, 00:01:43.67\00:01:46.50 we are going to study each of these steps in more detail. 00:01:46.53\00:01:50.11 But I just want to give you a global view now 00:01:50.31\00:01:53.81 of the steps that Jesus takes through the Sanctuary service 00:01:53.84\00:01:57.48 to solve the great controversy between good and evil. 00:01:57.71\00:02:01.78 We will begin our study of the Sanctuary in the camp. 00:02:02.35\00:02:05.85 The camp is where the sinners lived. 00:02:06.25\00:02:09.99 You know, many begin the study of the Sanctuary in the court. 00:02:10.09\00:02:13.40 But really, I believe that's a mistake to begin in the court. 00:02:13.76\00:02:17.47 Because in the camp is where Jesus lived 00:02:17.73\00:02:21.34 before He went to the cross, before He went to the altar. 00:02:21.37\00:02:24.64 In other words, we need to begin the study of the Sanctuary 00:02:25.04\00:02:28.18 in the camp where the sinners lived. 00:02:28.38\00:02:31.18 And there, Jesus came. 00:02:31.55\00:02:33.21 His first function was for Him to come and live a perfect life 00:02:33.25\00:02:39.45 as an immaculate Lamb, and to be a perfect Priest. 00:02:39.49\00:02:44.23 We're going to notice that Jesus is both the Priest 00:02:44.39\00:02:48.06 and the victim. 00:02:48.10\00:02:49.73 And the Bible tells us that the priest had to be without defect, 00:02:49.76\00:02:53.47 and the victim also had to be without defect. 00:02:53.74\00:02:59.24 So basically, the first function of Jesus in the camp 00:02:59.44\00:03:02.74 is to live a life without sin, 00:03:02.78\00:03:06.05 to develop a life of perfect righteousness. 00:03:06.15\00:03:09.38 He did that in the midst of sinners in the camp. 00:03:09.42\00:03:12.65 Then Jesus moved into the court. 00:03:13.12\00:03:15.46 The altar is the next piece of furniture in the Sanctuary. 00:03:15.96\00:03:20.50 And there, Jesus, the unblemished Priest 00:03:20.83\00:03:24.80 and the unblemished Lamb, offered His life as a sacrifice 00:03:25.03\00:03:30.41 for the sins of the whole world. 00:03:30.44\00:03:32.07 And so in the camp, He lives an unblemished life. 00:03:32.44\00:03:35.91 And in the court at the altar of sacrifice, 00:03:36.01\00:03:39.58 He bears the sins of the world and He dies the penalty of sin 00:03:39.68\00:03:44.85 that sinners should suffer. 00:03:44.89\00:03:46.59 And then the next piece of furniture in the Sanctuary 00:03:47.16\00:03:49.59 is the laver. 00:03:49.62\00:03:52.23 In the laver there was water. 00:03:52.73\00:03:54.30 And we're going to study that the laver symbolizes 00:03:54.33\00:03:57.93 the resurrection of Jesus Christ. 00:03:57.97\00:04:00.40 And of course, the purpose of the resurrection of Christ 00:04:00.74\00:04:03.67 is so that He can now enter the next function 00:04:03.71\00:04:07.31 of His ministry in the Holy Place. 00:04:07.34\00:04:09.11 Because if Jesus had not resurrected, 00:04:09.21\00:04:11.38 He would not have been able to begin His next function 00:04:11.55\00:04:15.05 in the Holy Place. 00:04:15.15\00:04:16.48 So the resurrection is the transition point between 00:04:16.52\00:04:20.36 His death on the cross and the beginning of His ministry 00:04:20.39\00:04:23.53 in the Holy Place. 00:04:23.56\00:04:25.03 And so basically, Jesus resurrects now 00:04:25.06\00:04:27.93 to pour out upon sinners the benefits of His perfect life 00:04:27.96\00:04:32.90 and His death for sin. 00:04:33.10\00:04:34.77 And then later on Jesus moves into the Most Holy Place 00:04:35.34\00:04:39.47 of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:04:39.67\00:04:41.84 Excuse me, the Holy Place. 00:04:42.11\00:04:44.85 And there, Jesus becomes the High Priest. 00:04:45.11\00:04:48.38 In other words, Jesus becomes the Advocate, 00:04:48.48\00:04:51.02 the Mediator, or the Intercessor for those who come to Him 00:04:51.25\00:04:56.69 to claim the benefits of His life and of His death. 00:04:56.73\00:05:00.50 So the next step of Jesus is in the Holy Place 00:05:00.66\00:05:05.10 of the heavenly Sanctuary to serve as Advocate, 00:05:05.13\00:05:07.90 Mediator, and Intercessor. 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.17 And then He moves into the Most Holy Place. 00:05:10.41\00:05:13.27 And in the Most Holy Place He continues His function 00:05:13.48\00:05:16.51 as High Priest. 00:05:16.54\00:05:17.88 In other words, He continues interceding, 00:05:17.91\00:05:20.08 He continues being an Advocate or a Mediator, 00:05:20.22\00:05:25.05 for those who come to Him in faith claiming the benefit 00:05:25.15\00:05:29.22 of His life and of His death. 00:05:29.26\00:05:31.43 But Jesus then adds an additional function, 00:05:31.46\00:05:34.30 which is the judgment. 00:05:34.33\00:05:36.56 So He continues being the High Priestly Intercessor, 00:05:36.60\00:05:39.83 but He also now takes on an additional function, 00:05:39.93\00:05:43.34 which is that of the judgment. 00:05:43.44\00:05:47.14 And then finally the last step is, once all of the sins 00:05:47.44\00:05:52.18 have been cleansed from the Sanctuary on the 00:05:52.38\00:05:54.62 Day of Atonement, which is the judgment, 00:05:54.65\00:05:56.79 then Jesus brings all of the sins that were deposited 00:05:56.89\00:06:01.79 in the Sanctuary by those who were true believers, 00:06:01.82\00:06:05.49 and He brings out those sins and He places them 00:06:05.53\00:06:09.20 on the head of the scapegoat, Azazel. 00:06:09.30\00:06:12.83 And then Azazel, the scapegoat, is sent to the wilderness 00:06:13.13\00:06:16.97 where there are no inhabitants, and he basically is exiled 00:06:17.21\00:06:22.01 from the Sanctuary and from the encampment of Israel. 00:06:22.04\00:06:25.81 So summarizing the steps that Jesus takes in the Sanctuary, 00:06:26.21\00:06:30.05 first of all He comes to the camp to live a perfect life 00:06:30.09\00:06:34.39 so that He can be a perfect Priest and a perfect victim. 00:06:34.59\00:06:38.09 Secondly, He goes to the court altar, bears the sins 00:06:38.39\00:06:42.06 of the whole world, and suffers the penalty for sin 00:06:42.10\00:06:45.83 in place of every human being. 00:06:45.87\00:06:48.04 Then He moves to the laver. 00:06:48.34\00:06:50.44 That is, Jesus resurrects from the dead. 00:06:50.47\00:06:53.48 The purpose of His resurrection is so that He can go to the 00:06:53.64\00:06:56.91 next function in the Holy Place of the heavenly Sanctuary. 00:06:56.95\00:07:00.98 And in the Holy Place Jesus serves as an Advocate, 00:07:01.02\00:07:05.09 Mediator, or Intercessor for those who claim 00:07:05.12\00:07:09.09 His perfect life and those who claim His death for sin. 00:07:09.12\00:07:13.23 And then later on Jesus moves into the Most Holy Place 00:07:13.70\00:07:17.40 where He continues serving as the High Priestly Mediator, 00:07:17.43\00:07:21.74 but He adds another function. 00:07:21.94\00:07:23.84 That is, the function of the judgment. 00:07:23.87\00:07:26.54 And then after His work in the Most Holy Place is finished, 00:07:26.74\00:07:30.48 then He moves back to the door of the Tabernacle 00:07:30.51\00:07:34.45 to the Holy Place, and the scapegoat is waiting there 00:07:34.48\00:07:37.55 in the court right next to the door that leads 00:07:37.59\00:07:40.66 into the Holy Place. 00:07:40.69\00:07:42.02 And all of the sins that had been placed in the Sanctuary 00:07:42.06\00:07:44.86 now are taken, the two hands of the High Priest 00:07:44.99\00:07:48.06 are placed on the head of the scapegoat, 00:07:48.10\00:07:49.93 and all of the sins that have been placed in the Sanctuary 00:07:49.96\00:07:53.27 are confessed on the head of the scapegoat. 00:07:53.30\00:07:55.84 And then the scapegoat is sent to a wilderness, 00:07:55.94\00:07:59.44 a desolate wilderness, where there are no inhabitants. 00:07:59.47\00:08:02.84 And in this way, the Sanctuary and the camp 00:08:02.88\00:08:07.25 are totally cleansed from sin. 00:08:07.35\00:08:09.98 So those are the steps that we're going to take a look at 00:08:10.52\00:08:13.19 in the rest of the presentations that we are 00:08:13.29\00:08:16.16 going to study here together. 00:08:16.19\00:08:19.16 Now I need to mention that the first three functions of Jesus, 00:08:19.89\00:08:24.50 the first three functions; which are His perfect life 00:08:24.53\00:08:28.57 in the camp, His death on the cross which is 00:08:28.60\00:08:32.77 symbolized by the altar, and His resurrection, 00:08:32.81\00:08:36.11 Jesus performed for every single human being who has ever lived 00:08:36.31\00:08:42.68 in the history of planet earth. 00:08:42.72\00:08:44.39 In other words, in those first three steps Jesus provided 00:08:44.62\00:08:49.69 what is needed by every single person on the planet. 00:08:50.19\00:08:54.56 So there's no one, we're going to notice, 00:08:55.06\00:08:57.27 that really should perish. 00:08:57.30\00:08:58.77 Because the provision for salvation is complete. 00:08:58.87\00:09:02.27 By His perfect life, His death for sin, and His resurrection 00:09:02.47\00:09:06.84 Jesus has made provision for everyone to be saved. 00:09:07.04\00:09:12.61 However, we find that the last steps of Jesus in the Sanctuary 00:09:13.18\00:09:19.02 have to do, not with the whole world, but they have to do with 00:09:19.55\00:09:24.99 individuals who actually come to Jesus claiming the benefits 00:09:25.03\00:09:32.30 of His life and His death and His resurrection. 00:09:32.33\00:09:35.44 So basically, what I want us to remember is that the 00:09:35.57\00:09:38.71 first three functions; that is, His life in the camp, 00:09:38.74\00:09:41.88 His death in the court, and His resurrection in the court, 00:09:41.91\00:09:45.41 that He did for every single person who has ever lived. 00:09:45.51\00:09:48.48 The last steps; which are His ministry in the Holy place, 00:09:48.82\00:09:52.65 His ministry in the Most Holy Place, 00:09:52.82\00:09:54.86 and the placing of the sins upon the head of the scapegoat, 00:09:54.89\00:09:57.93 has to do only with those who believe in Jesus 00:09:58.09\00:10:01.90 and claim what Jesus did in the camp and in the court. 00:10:01.93\00:10:06.53 And this will become clearer as we study along. 00:10:06.57\00:10:10.11 By the way, what Jesus did in the first three steps 00:10:10.21\00:10:13.91 of His ministry; that is, by His perfect life in the camp, 00:10:13.94\00:10:17.28 and by His death at the altar, and by His resurrection, 00:10:17.48\00:10:21.38 Ellen White calls that the benefits of His atonement. 00:10:21.42\00:10:26.72 The benefits of His atonement. 00:10:26.76\00:10:28.79 The benefits He gained for every single person 00:10:28.96\00:10:32.23 who has ever lived. 00:10:32.26\00:10:33.60 I want to read a statement that we find in, Early Writings, 00:10:33.63\00:10:36.36 page 259, where Ellen White explains what the benefits are. 00:10:36.46\00:10:42.60 Here's the statement, page 259, Early Writings. 00:10:44.24\00:10:48.54 That happened at the cross, right? 00:10:53.11\00:10:54.75 So when Jesus said, "It is finished," on the cross, 00:11:04.39\00:11:07.26 the veil was rent. 00:11:07.30\00:11:08.63 That means that the sacrificial system of the Jews 00:11:08.66\00:11:11.63 came to an end. 00:11:11.67\00:11:13.00 She continues writing... 00:11:13.30\00:11:14.64 Now listen carefully. 00:11:35.39\00:11:37.03 "...to shed upon His disciples..." 00:11:37.06\00:11:40.23 Not all human beings. 00:11:40.43\00:11:42.26 But He went there "...to shed upon His disciples 00:11:42.63\00:11:45.93 the benefits of His atonement." 00:11:45.97\00:11:49.57 So what did Jesus go to heaven for? 00:11:49.94\00:11:52.11 To pour out upon His disciples, that means His followers, 00:11:52.37\00:11:57.35 the benefits of His atonement. 00:11:57.38\00:11:59.45 And the benefits of His atonement are His perfect life 00:11:59.68\00:12:04.09 and His death for sin. 00:12:04.19\00:12:05.59 Those are the benefits. 00:12:05.62\00:12:06.96 Jesus gained those benefits for everyone. 00:12:06.99\00:12:09.66 But only those who come to God through Him are benefited 00:12:09.76\00:12:14.40 by what Jesus did in the camp and in the court. 00:12:14.43\00:12:18.30 Ellen White continues explaining... 00:12:18.60\00:12:20.70 In other words, because they did not follow Jesus to the cross, 00:12:41.06\00:12:43.76 because they didn't believe in the resurrection, 00:12:43.79\00:12:45.93 they were not ready to follow Jesus in His work 00:12:45.96\00:12:48.70 in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary. 00:12:48.73\00:12:50.70 So she says... 00:12:50.73\00:12:52.07 So are you understanding what this is saying? 00:13:06.01\00:13:08.35 So the first three aspects of the ministry of Christ; 00:13:08.65\00:13:11.85 His perfect life in the camp as Priest and as victim, 00:13:12.05\00:13:15.92 and His death on the cross, represented by the altar, 00:13:16.09\00:13:19.63 and His resurrection where He now goes into the Holy Place, 00:13:19.66\00:13:23.40 those three steps were done for every single person 00:13:23.53\00:13:27.94 who has ever lived in the history of planet earth. 00:13:27.97\00:13:30.41 They are the benefits of Christ's work. 00:13:30.51\00:13:34.31 But not everyone claims those benefits. 00:13:34.64\00:13:37.41 And so we need to remember, that is a very, very important point. 00:13:37.45\00:13:40.45 Now let's review the accusations that Satan 00:13:40.78\00:13:45.05 launched against God. 00:13:45.09\00:13:47.06 And I'm going to only mention four of those accusations 00:13:47.09\00:13:51.89 of Satan against God. 00:13:51.93\00:13:53.73 Number one, God is a respecter of persons. 00:13:54.03\00:13:57.93 In other words, God has favorites. 00:13:57.97\00:14:00.44 He favored His Son above everybody else. 00:14:00.57\00:14:03.91 And so the first argument is, God plays favorites. 00:14:04.24\00:14:08.48 God is a respecter of persons. 00:14:08.51\00:14:10.95 Secondly, God keeps secrets. 00:14:11.21\00:14:15.05 There's certain knowledge that He keeps to Himself 00:14:15.28\00:14:17.72 and He only shares with His Son, when everybody should have 00:14:17.75\00:14:21.12 the opportunity of knowing those things. 00:14:21.16\00:14:23.99 In the third place, God's law is restrictive of our liberties 00:14:24.33\00:14:30.80 and cannot be kept. 00:14:30.90\00:14:32.77 That is a strong argument that Lucifer used in heaven, 00:14:32.90\00:14:37.04 and he also used it on earth when he tempted Eve, 00:14:37.07\00:14:40.04 and then Eve tempted Adam. 00:14:40.08\00:14:42.14 And then we have the argument that God is selfish. 00:14:42.71\00:14:46.35 All He wants is for His creatures 00:14:46.65\00:14:49.15 to serve Him as slaves. 00:14:49.18\00:14:51.75 He wants them to render Him blind service. 00:14:51.95\00:14:55.76 And God will not lift even one finger to serve. 00:14:55.86\00:15:01.06 Now we're going to study this evening about the ministry 00:15:01.90\00:15:06.07 of Jesus in the camp, the Sanctuary camp, 00:15:06.10\00:15:09.67 which is the first step that Jesus takes in solving 00:15:09.77\00:15:13.54 the problem of the great controversy. 00:15:13.58\00:15:16.54 And we're going to see how Jesus answers step by step 00:15:16.58\00:15:20.85 these accusations that were launched against 00:15:20.88\00:15:24.09 the government of God. 00:15:24.12\00:15:25.52 And when we finish our study, we are going to notice 00:15:25.55\00:15:29.02 that every single accusation of Satan against God, 00:15:29.06\00:15:32.76 every smear of God's character, will be removed 00:15:32.79\00:15:37.03 and God will be cleared. 00:15:37.07\00:15:38.87 Now after man sinned, Satan came up with a new argument 00:15:39.30\00:15:44.77 that seemed to place a contradiction 00:15:45.11\00:15:48.48 in God's character. 00:15:48.84\00:15:50.48 Satan's argument against God's character 00:15:51.08\00:15:54.48 flowed in the way that I'm going to read now. 00:15:55.08\00:15:58.45 This is Satan speaking to God. 00:15:58.65\00:16:01.16 "Your law requires absolute sinless perfection. 00:16:01.59\00:16:06.76 You, Yourself, stated that if the righteous requirement 00:16:08.63\00:16:12.93 of the law is not met, the result is death. 00:16:12.97\00:16:17.61 Man has not met the righteous requirements of the law. 00:16:18.64\00:16:23.18 And therefore, he must die." 00:16:23.61\00:16:25.55 Are you understanding the argument? 00:16:25.58\00:16:27.08 "Therefore, he must die." 00:16:27.12\00:16:28.45 "If You don't keep Your word," the devil says to God, 00:16:29.18\00:16:33.56 "Your justice and truth is compromised. 00:16:33.59\00:16:37.16 Because Your justice demands the death of the sinner, 00:16:37.76\00:16:40.63 and the law demands a perfect life. 00:16:40.66\00:16:43.30 Furthermore, if You do not keep Your word, 00:16:43.87\00:16:46.80 then You will appear to be a liar." 00:16:46.84\00:16:49.10 So Satan continues saying to God, "If You don't 00:16:49.64\00:16:54.01 keep Your word, Your justice and truth is compromised. 00:16:54.04\00:16:57.51 But if Your justice destroys man, if You keep Your word 00:16:57.71\00:17:02.18 and man is destroyed because of sin, 00:17:02.38\00:17:05.69 then Your love is compromised. 00:17:05.72\00:17:08.72 How can a God of love destroy His creatures?" 00:17:08.76\00:17:12.16 So are you seeing that there's a seeming contradiction 00:17:12.39\00:17:15.33 between the justice and the love of God? 00:17:15.36\00:17:17.37 Satan is saying to God, "Your law demands absolute perfection. 00:17:17.93\00:17:21.90 You said that if someone doesn't render the law 00:17:22.40\00:17:24.87 absolute perfection, that person has to die. 00:17:24.91\00:17:27.74 Well, all human beings have failed to render 00:17:27.78\00:17:30.91 perfection to the law. 00:17:30.95\00:17:32.28 Therefore, all human beings should die. 00:17:32.31\00:17:34.48 If You don't execute the penalty, then You will be 00:17:34.75\00:17:38.49 proved a liar and Your justice is compromised. 00:17:38.52\00:17:41.62 But if You destroy sinners, then how is it that a God of love 00:17:41.66\00:17:46.83 destroys His own creatures?" 00:17:46.86\00:17:49.23 And so there seems to be a contradiction between the 00:17:49.26\00:17:52.20 justice and the love of God. 00:17:52.23\00:17:54.24 That was an additional accusation of Satan against 00:17:54.40\00:17:58.27 God's character after Adam and Eve sinned, 00:17:58.31\00:18:01.28 and after all human beings followed the example 00:18:01.31\00:18:04.31 of Adam and Eve. 00:18:04.35\00:18:05.68 And so now we need to take a look at how God resolved 00:18:06.01\00:18:09.95 that first accusation of Satan where he says, 00:18:09.98\00:18:13.22 "God, You have said that the law demands absolute perfection. 00:18:13.76\00:18:18.36 And if a being does not offer the law absolute perfection, 00:18:18.56\00:18:22.70 that person must die." 00:18:22.80\00:18:25.37 Now I would like us to remember that according to the Bible 00:18:26.20\00:18:30.11 Jesus created every single person that lives 00:18:30.41\00:18:34.94 upon this planet. 00:18:34.98\00:18:36.34 Let's notice John 1:1-3. 00:18:36.61\00:18:40.08 John 1:1-3 00:18:40.12\00:18:43.22 This is a passage we know very well. 00:18:43.25\00:18:45.12 So who is it that created every single person 00:19:01.77\00:19:05.14 that lives upon this planet? 00:19:05.17\00:19:06.88 Jesus. 00:19:07.18\00:19:08.51 You know, when I say that, somebody usually says, 00:19:08.54\00:19:12.08 "But Pastor Bohr, you know, Jesus didn't create me. 00:19:12.11\00:19:14.82 I was born from my mother." 00:19:14.85\00:19:16.48 And so I say, "Well very good. 00:19:17.22\00:19:18.75 And who was your mother born from?" 00:19:18.79\00:19:20.52 "Well she was born from her mother." 00:19:20.62\00:19:22.46 I say, "And where did her mother come from?" 00:19:22.69\00:19:24.99 "Well she came from her mother." 00:19:25.03\00:19:26.39 Now if we go all the way back to the beginning, 00:19:26.49\00:19:28.30 where does the process end? 00:19:28.33\00:19:29.73 It ends with Adam and Eve. 00:19:29.96\00:19:31.37 When Jesus created Adam and Eve, He created everyone, 00:19:31.60\00:19:35.50 because everyone descends from Adam and Eve. 00:19:35.54\00:19:38.41 And so because Jesus created everyone, Jesus is responsible 00:19:38.64\00:19:43.55 for our existence. 00:19:43.58\00:19:44.91 Isn't Jesus responsible for our existence? 00:19:44.95\00:19:46.82 He's not responsible for our sin. 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.15 That's our choice. 00:19:49.62\00:19:50.95 He is responsible for our existence because He created us. 00:19:51.15\00:19:55.19 Did we ask to be created? Did we ask to be born? 00:19:55.29\00:19:58.29 No. 00:19:58.33\00:19:59.66 So who is responsible ultimately for our existence? 00:19:59.69\00:20:02.20 It is Jesus Christ. 00:20:02.23\00:20:03.60 And so Jesus says to Himself, "I created these individuals, 00:20:03.63\00:20:08.24 I'm responsible for their creation. 00:20:08.27\00:20:10.14 I cannot conceive of not creating a way in which 00:20:10.17\00:20:15.81 My creatures can be saved, 00:20:15.84\00:20:17.55 in harmony with the character of God." 00:20:17.58\00:20:20.18 Now as we've noticed, the law of God requires absolute 00:20:21.32\00:20:26.02 sinless perfection. 00:20:26.05\00:20:27.66 The Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, tells us that 00:20:28.62\00:20:31.43 God requires absolute sinless righteousness from everyone. 00:20:31.46\00:20:37.47 Now the Bible also says that if we don't give the law 00:20:37.97\00:20:42.20 perfect righteousness, if we can't offer the law 00:20:42.24\00:20:45.07 what the law requires, the Bible says that is sin. 00:20:45.11\00:20:50.05 Let's notice 1 John 3:4. 00:20:50.35\00:20:54.22 1 John 3:4 00:20:54.25\00:20:57.15 I like better the way the King James reads in 1 John 3:4. 00:21:05.96\00:21:10.07 It says, "For sins is..." What? 00:21:10.23\00:21:12.80 "...sin is the transgression of the law." 00:21:12.90\00:21:15.77 So I want you to notice what we have here. 00:21:16.10\00:21:18.17 The law requires absolute sinless perfection, 00:21:18.41\00:21:21.91 absolute righteousness. 00:21:21.94\00:21:23.51 If that is not offered to the law, that is called what? 00:21:24.18\00:21:28.92 Sin. 00:21:29.28\00:21:30.62 And let me ask you, how many people are guilty of sin 00:21:30.85\00:21:35.29 on this earth? 00:21:35.32\00:21:36.66 Every single person. 00:21:36.89\00:21:38.23 Notice Romans 3:10. 00:21:38.49\00:21:41.40 Romans 3:10 00:21:41.43\00:21:43.57 And then also we will read verse 23. 00:21:43.60\00:21:46.67 How many human beings could offer sinless perfection 00:21:54.68\00:21:58.55 to the law, absolute righteousness to the law? 00:21:58.58\00:22:00.82 No one. 00:22:01.18\00:22:02.52 It says, once again... 00:22:03.15\00:22:04.69 And then verse 23 tells us... 00:22:08.39\00:22:10.96 So there's a serious problem in the human race. 00:22:16.63\00:22:20.10 There is no one on the planet that can offer the law 00:22:20.20\00:22:24.77 perfect righteousness. 00:22:25.41\00:22:26.98 And so, the law tells every human being what? 00:22:27.18\00:22:30.55 Because you don't offer the law perfect righteousness, 00:22:30.78\00:22:33.85 a perfect life, the result is that you must what? 00:22:33.88\00:22:38.12 You must die. 00:22:38.22\00:22:39.89 Let's read that in Romans 5:12. 00:22:40.09\00:22:43.76 Romans 5:12 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.56 And then we'll also read chapter 6:23. 00:22:46.59\00:22:49.70 Who was that one man? 00:22:56.07\00:22:57.41 Adam. Very well. 00:22:59.07\00:23:00.58 Are you seeing the chain of argument here? 00:23:15.69\00:23:19.86 And then it says in Romans 6:23... 00:23:20.23\00:23:22.73 So the law says, "Obey me perfectly and live. 00:23:29.84\00:23:33.48 If you don't, that's sin. 00:23:33.98\00:23:36.08 And if you sin, you will die." 00:23:36.75\00:23:39.38 And everyone has what? Sinned. 00:23:39.78\00:23:42.18 Therefore, how many human beings were on death row? 00:23:42.22\00:23:44.79 Every single human being was on death row. 00:23:45.09\00:23:48.19 Now the question is, how could man be saved 00:23:48.92\00:23:53.46 from this problem of not being able to offer the law 00:23:53.56\00:23:57.23 sinless perfection, or absolute righteousness, 00:23:57.33\00:24:00.50 when there was no one in the human race who could 00:24:00.54\00:24:03.41 offer the law what the law requires? 00:24:03.44\00:24:05.61 Well, in the Old Testament we have what are called, 00:24:06.01\00:24:09.18 the laws of redemption. 00:24:09.21\00:24:11.21 If a person, for example, sold their possession, 00:24:11.78\00:24:14.68 their inheritance, that inheritance could 00:24:15.48\00:24:18.75 be bought back. 00:24:18.79\00:24:20.12 And if an individual sold himself into slavery 00:24:20.92\00:24:24.59 or into servant-hood, there was a way in which 00:24:24.63\00:24:27.60 that person could gain his freedom. 00:24:27.63\00:24:30.57 And you say, "Well, how could the person get back 00:24:30.83\00:24:32.97 their inheritance that they had sold, and get back the freedom 00:24:33.00\00:24:36.10 that they had sold as well?" 00:24:36.14\00:24:37.54 Let's go to Leviticus 25, and we'll read verse 25 00:24:38.47\00:24:42.68 first of all about the lost inheritance, 00:24:42.78\00:24:45.35 and secondly we'll read Leviticus 25:47-49 00:24:45.45\00:24:50.65 which describes when a person sold themselves into slavery. 00:24:50.75\00:24:54.89 First of all, Leviticus 25:25. 00:24:54.92\00:24:57.96 That is, his inheritance. 00:25:05.70\00:25:07.44 Now the word, "redeeming," is very important. 00:25:10.21\00:25:12.31 It's the Hebrew word, "ga'al." 00:25:12.61\00:25:15.71 And basically it means, buying something back 00:25:16.24\00:25:20.45 by paying a price. 00:25:20.48\00:25:21.92 It's the principle of the pawn shop. 00:25:22.22\00:25:25.02 Do you know what a pawn shop is? 00:25:25.75\00:25:27.36 You need some money, and so you take an object 00:25:27.79\00:25:30.33 and you take it to the pawn shop, and you sell it 00:25:30.36\00:25:32.69 to the pawn shop owner. 00:25:32.73\00:25:34.06 Can that object that you sold be recovered? 00:25:34.56\00:25:39.17 Yes. 00:25:39.37\00:25:40.70 By doing what? 00:25:40.74\00:25:42.07 By paying a higher price, right? 00:25:42.14\00:25:45.11 So you go pay the higher price and you can buy back 00:25:45.14\00:25:48.68 that which you sold. 00:25:48.71\00:25:50.05 That's the meaning of the word, ga'al, that is used here. 00:25:50.08\00:25:53.78 So it says... 00:25:54.05\00:25:55.38 That is, a relative that pays the price to buy back 00:26:02.39\00:26:05.13 the inheritance that was lost. 00:26:05.39\00:26:07.06 So who could redeem or who could buy back 00:26:12.77\00:26:16.30 what an individual had sold? 00:26:16.34\00:26:18.01 It had to be a what? 00:26:18.04\00:26:20.01 It had to be a redeeming relative. 00:26:20.28\00:26:23.98 And it calls that relative, specifically, his brother. 00:26:24.18\00:26:28.98 So in other words, a close relative could buy back 00:26:29.28\00:26:33.25 what had been sold. 00:26:33.29\00:26:35.39 Now, what happened if an individual sold 00:26:35.79\00:26:38.39 himself into slavery? 00:26:38.43\00:26:39.76 Because they could do that in Israel as well. 00:26:39.79\00:26:42.06 Notice verses 47 to 49. 00:26:42.26\00:26:44.83 Once again the word, "redeemed," there is the word, "ga'al." 00:27:07.56\00:27:10.96 In other words, he can be bought back. 00:27:10.99\00:27:13.40 The relative can pay a price to buy that person's freedom back. 00:27:13.43\00:27:17.93 And then notice what it says in the last part of verse 48. 00:27:18.27\00:27:22.84 Well, it's a hypothetical statement, because if he 00:27:40.46\00:27:42.32 sold himself into slavery, you know, he wasn't going to 00:27:42.36\00:27:46.19 be able to buy himself back. 00:27:46.23\00:27:47.83 And so basically what this is saying is that if an individual 00:27:48.13\00:27:51.23 sold their inheritance, or if an individual sold himself 00:27:51.27\00:27:54.74 into slavery, the inheritance could be bought back 00:27:54.77\00:27:58.54 by paying a price, and the freedom could be bought back 00:27:58.57\00:28:02.31 by paying a price. 00:28:02.34\00:28:03.78 Let me ask you this: 00:28:04.18\00:28:05.51 Did all human beings sell their inheritance? 00:28:05.91\00:28:08.78 We sold our inheritance, right? 00:28:09.28\00:28:11.49 Who did we sell it to? 00:28:11.62\00:28:12.95 We sold it to the devil. 00:28:13.62\00:28:15.12 Did all of us sell our freedom and come into bondage? 00:28:15.62\00:28:20.26 Yes. Bondage of sin. 00:28:20.63\00:28:22.46 We became slaves of sin. 00:28:22.50\00:28:24.20 Now the question is, how could we get our inheritance back? 00:28:24.70\00:28:28.20 How could we gain our freedom back? 00:28:28.47\00:28:31.57 We needed a what? 00:28:31.94\00:28:33.54 We needed a brother or a next of kin who could come 00:28:33.58\00:28:37.65 and pay the price so that our freedom could be bought back 00:28:37.68\00:28:42.65 and our lost inheritance could be bought back. 00:28:42.68\00:28:46.59 But there was a serious problem. 00:28:46.96\00:28:48.99 And that is, that within the human race 00:28:49.99\00:28:52.26 there was not a single human being that had not 00:28:52.49\00:28:55.50 sold his inheritance and sold himself into slavery. 00:28:55.53\00:28:58.90 Are you understanding the problem? 00:28:59.37\00:29:01.00 The problem is, everybody sold themselves into slavery. 00:29:01.30\00:29:04.51 Everybody sold their inheritance. 00:29:04.87\00:29:07.24 And so nobody within the human race could what? 00:29:07.44\00:29:11.18 Could redeem that which had been sold. 00:29:11.21\00:29:14.58 Now let me ask you a question. 00:29:16.25\00:29:17.72 Before Jesus came to this world, 00:29:18.39\00:29:22.29 was Jesus a member of our family? 00:29:22.92\00:29:26.26 You know, sometimes I ask that question and people say yes, 00:29:28.13\00:29:30.87 because they're not reflecting a lot upon the question. 00:29:30.90\00:29:34.50 The question is, before His incarnation, 00:29:34.94\00:29:38.17 was Jesus a member of the human family? No. 00:29:38.47\00:29:42.28 So was Jesus our next of kin? No. 00:29:42.31\00:29:45.75 So could Jesus fulfill the laws of redemption 00:29:45.95\00:29:49.18 of buying back the inheritance and buying back our freedom 00:29:49.22\00:29:52.55 if He came as God? 00:29:52.59\00:29:54.09 He could not do that. 00:29:54.12\00:29:55.46 He had to be what? 00:29:55.49\00:29:57.03 He had to be our next of kin. 00:29:57.06\00:29:58.73 And you say, "Well, why would He have to be our next of kin?" 00:29:58.76\00:30:01.93 There are several reasons, but there are two main reasons. 00:30:02.50\00:30:05.37 Number one, the Bible tells us that God cannot be tempted. 00:30:05.40\00:30:11.57 And so if Jesus had come as God, He could not have been what? 00:30:13.27\00:30:17.68 He could not have been tempted. 00:30:18.11\00:30:19.48 Could Jesus have developed a perfect life of righteousness 00:30:19.51\00:30:22.95 if He was not a human being? 00:30:23.05\00:30:24.72 No. 00:30:24.75\00:30:26.09 He had to be tempted in all things such as we are, 00:30:26.12\00:30:28.92 and He had to develop a righteous character 00:30:29.16\00:30:31.86 that He could give to us when we claim it. 00:30:31.89\00:30:34.76 Are you following me or not? 00:30:34.80\00:30:36.13 But if He came as God, He couldn't be tempted. 00:30:36.53\00:30:39.03 And therefore, He could not form a righteous character 00:30:39.07\00:30:42.40 that He could impute or credit to our account. 00:30:42.44\00:30:45.84 So because He had to be tempted, He had to come as a human being. 00:30:46.04\00:30:51.15 It says in James 1:13... 00:30:51.58\00:30:54.28 So can anyone tempt God? 00:31:04.13\00:31:05.73 If Jesus had come to this world as God, would the devil 00:31:05.76\00:31:10.20 have been able to deceive Him? 00:31:10.23\00:31:11.63 Come on, God can't be deceived. 00:31:12.00\00:31:13.44 God knows all things. 00:31:13.47\00:31:14.84 And so it would not have helped us at all 00:31:15.07\00:31:17.57 for Jesus to come as God. 00:31:17.61\00:31:18.94 Now there's a second reason why Jesus had to become 00:31:18.97\00:31:21.54 our next of kin, He had to become a human being. 00:31:21.58\00:31:23.75 And that is so that He could die. 00:31:23.88\00:31:27.12 Can God die? 00:31:28.12\00:31:29.45 No. God can't die. 00:31:30.19\00:31:32.42 Notice 1 Timothy 6:15-16. 00:31:32.69\00:31:36.42 1 Timothy 6:15-16 00:31:36.46\00:31:39.09 I'm only reading the last part of verse 15. 00:31:39.13\00:31:41.66 Speaking about God the Father, it says.. 00:31:42.46\00:31:44.23 And so you notice here that we're told that God is what? 00:32:07.62\00:32:11.69 Immortal. 00:32:11.73\00:32:13.06 Basically, it means that God cannot die. 00:32:13.09\00:32:15.26 So if Jesus had come to this earth, not as one 00:32:15.30\00:32:18.60 of our next of kin, could Jesus have died? 00:32:18.63\00:32:22.04 He could not have died. 00:32:22.34\00:32:23.91 And so now we understand why the laws of redemption 00:32:24.01\00:32:26.78 required that an individual, in order to redeem someone, 00:32:26.81\00:32:30.78 had to be his brother. 00:32:30.81\00:32:32.15 It had to be a member of that family. 00:32:32.18\00:32:35.18 Are you following me or not? 00:32:35.22\00:32:36.58 Now, here's something very interesting. 00:32:36.89\00:32:39.45 Go with me to Matthew 1:1. 00:32:39.55\00:32:42.79 Matthew 1:1 00:32:43.02\00:32:46.03 This is speaking about the genealogy of Jesus Christ. 00:32:46.49\00:32:51.63 And I want you to notice what we're told there in Matthew 1:1. 00:32:51.67\00:32:55.60 So was Jesus the Son of David? 00:33:05.58\00:33:07.78 Yes. Was Jesus the Son of Abraham? 00:33:08.55\00:33:11.42 He most certainly was. 00:33:11.82\00:33:13.25 Bu now I want you to notice something very interesting. 00:33:13.56\00:33:16.66 Go with me in your Bibles to John 8:58. 00:33:17.13\00:33:22.16 John 8:58 00:33:22.20\00:33:25.37 Here, Jesus is speaking to a group of Jews. 00:33:26.03\00:33:28.80 And I want you to notice what He says. 00:33:29.24\00:33:31.17 Or as it says in the King James, "Verily, verily..." 00:33:34.81\00:33:37.55 Now wait a minute. 00:33:42.38\00:33:43.72 We just read that Jesus is the Son of Abraham. 00:33:43.75\00:33:46.55 Now Jesus is saying, "Before Abraham was, I AM." 00:33:46.59\00:33:50.16 So Jesus is the Father of Abraham and the Son of Abraham. 00:33:50.19\00:33:54.10 You say, "Now wait a minute. 00:33:54.20\00:33:55.60 How can He be the Father and the Son of the same person?" 00:33:55.96\00:33:58.83 Well, because as God He's Abraham's Father. 00:33:59.10\00:34:02.54 And as Son of Abraham, He is because He became incarnate. 00:34:03.20\00:34:09.18 Are you with me or not? 00:34:09.21\00:34:10.55 Now notice also Revelation 22:16. 00:34:10.78\00:34:14.92 Revelation 22:16. 00:34:14.95\00:34:17.42 Here, Jesus is speaking and He says... 00:34:18.15\00:34:19.85 So Jesus is the Root of David, 00:34:33.54\00:34:35.70 and He is also the Offspring of David. 00:34:36.24\00:34:38.17 So David comes from Jesus and Jesus comes from David. 00:34:38.61\00:34:41.94 You say, "Now how can that be possible?" 00:34:42.04\00:34:44.05 How can Jesus be the Father of David and the Son of David? 00:34:44.08\00:34:47.45 He's the Father of David because He created David. 00:34:47.68\00:34:51.95 Because He is God. 00:34:52.15\00:34:53.69 He is the Son of David because He is what? 00:34:53.92\00:34:56.96 Because He is man. 00:34:56.99\00:34:58.46 So are you understanding the reason for the incarnation? 00:34:58.79\00:35:01.66 If Jesus had not become a man, Jesus could not have been 00:35:02.16\00:35:07.07 tempted like we are tempted, and He could not have developed 00:35:07.10\00:35:10.37 a righteous character that He could offer the law 00:35:10.41\00:35:13.58 in our place. 00:35:13.61\00:35:14.94 Are you following me or not? 00:35:15.54\00:35:16.88 Very, very important point. 00:35:16.91\00:35:18.25 And that's what we're studying today. 00:35:18.28\00:35:19.65 And in our next study together, I'm going to show you 00:35:20.12\00:35:23.72 that unless Jesus had become a man, our next of kin, 00:35:23.75\00:35:27.46 Jesus could not have gone to the court to die at the altar, 00:35:27.76\00:35:32.76 because God is immortal. 00:35:32.79\00:35:34.83 He had to become a man in order to what? 00:35:34.86\00:35:37.53 To die. 00:35:37.57\00:35:38.90 So He had to become a man in order to be tempted 00:35:38.93\00:35:41.44 and develop perfect righteousness to offer the law 00:35:41.47\00:35:43.94 in our place. 00:35:43.97\00:35:45.31 And then, Jesus had to bear the sins of the whole world, 00:35:45.34\00:35:48.18 and as a human being He had to die, paying for the penalty 00:35:48.21\00:35:51.91 of the sins of the whole world. 00:35:51.95\00:35:54.32 I hope you're understanding what we're saying. 00:35:54.35\00:35:56.02 Now let's go to John 1:14. 00:35:56.28\00:35:59.69 John 1:14 00:35:59.99\00:36:02.42 You know, sin was committed in the Sanctuary camp. 00:36:02.72\00:36:06.23 So Jesus came to camp in our midst when He became incarnate. 00:36:07.13\00:36:11.17 You know, sometimes, actually most of the time, 00:36:11.47\00:36:14.87 when Adventists study the Sanctuary, they begin 00:36:14.97\00:36:17.64 the study of the Sanctuary in the court at the altar. 00:36:17.67\00:36:20.04 I think it's a mistake to start studying the Sanctuary 00:36:20.51\00:36:23.85 in the court at the altar of sacrifice. 00:36:24.05\00:36:26.92 Let me ask you, does the ministry of Jesus begin 00:36:27.28\00:36:30.25 when He died on the cross? 00:36:30.29\00:36:31.89 Or did He have to live a perfect life before that? 00:36:32.52\00:36:34.99 He had to live a perfect life. 00:36:35.66\00:36:37.23 You see, in order for the sacrifice to be acceptable 00:36:37.26\00:36:41.50 before God, that animal had to be without what? 00:36:41.53\00:36:46.77 Without blemish. 00:36:46.90\00:36:48.24 And the priest that offered the sacrifice 00:36:48.27\00:36:51.31 also had to be without blemish. 00:36:51.34\00:36:53.58 Now the victim without blemish and the priest without blemish 00:36:54.11\00:36:57.71 represents the perfect life of Christ before His death. 00:36:57.75\00:37:02.25 You see, Jesus had, first of all, to live a perfect life 00:37:02.58\00:37:05.79 so that He could offer perfect righteousness to the law, 00:37:05.82\00:37:09.62 which no human being can offer. 00:37:09.66\00:37:12.33 And that's why in John 1:14, we are told... 00:37:12.36\00:37:16.93 That word, "dwelt," is very interesting. 00:37:22.07\00:37:24.21 It comes from the word, "skenoo," which means, 00:37:24.57\00:37:28.51 to pitch a tent. 00:37:28.54\00:37:29.88 So it's saying Jesus pitched His tent in our camp. 00:37:29.91\00:37:33.55 Notice once again the idea that He came to camp with us. 00:37:33.58\00:37:36.42 And so it says, once again... 00:37:36.62\00:37:38.45 Now what did Jesus do in the camp where sinners dwell? 00:37:51.73\00:37:55.04 The fact is that Jesus lived a life of perfect righteousness 00:37:55.50\00:38:00.24 that He could offer the law of God. 00:38:00.28\00:38:02.48 He lived that life for every single human being 00:38:02.84\00:38:06.75 who has ever drawn breath in the history of planet earth. 00:38:06.78\00:38:10.59 In order for His sacrifice to be accepted... 00:38:11.05\00:38:14.09 And tomorrow we're going to talk about His sacrifice. 00:38:14.12\00:38:16.39 In order for His sacrifice to be accepted, 00:38:16.42\00:38:18.86 He had to, first of all, be a blameless Priest 00:38:19.09\00:38:22.80 and He had to be a blameless or immaculate sacrifice. 00:38:22.83\00:38:28.34 By the way, Jesus also proved by His perfect life, 00:38:28.77\00:38:31.74 as we'll notice, that it is possible to obey the law of God 00:38:31.77\00:38:36.31 in sinful flesh. 00:38:36.41\00:38:38.05 Also, Jesus developed a perfect life that He could impart 00:38:38.88\00:38:43.95 or He could infuse into people that received Jesus Christ 00:38:43.99\00:38:48.96 as their Savior. 00:38:48.99\00:38:50.33 But we want to dwell primarily in this study 00:38:50.36\00:38:52.79 with the point that Jesus lived a perfect life 00:38:52.89\00:38:57.37 which He lived for every single human being 00:38:57.57\00:39:00.30 and He is willing to give to those who come to Him in faith. 00:39:00.50\00:39:04.47 Now go with me to Leviticus 22:20-22. 00:39:05.04\00:39:09.78 This is describing the victims that were offered 00:39:10.21\00:39:13.75 on the altar in the Old Testament. 00:39:13.78\00:39:15.88 I want you to notice what characteristics the beasts 00:39:15.92\00:39:20.79 that were offered had. 00:39:20.82\00:39:22.49 Once again, Leviticus 22:20-22. 00:39:22.92\00:39:26.33 So you notice that the victims that were offered 00:40:04.80\00:40:07.44 had to be without blemish. 00:40:07.47\00:40:09.70 Now in the Old Testament service they could only determine 00:40:09.90\00:40:13.41 that the victim had no physical blemish. 00:40:13.44\00:40:17.28 But the fact that the victim had no physical blemish 00:40:17.45\00:40:20.38 illustrated the fact that Jesus was going to come 00:40:20.42\00:40:23.18 and He would have no moral blemish. 00:40:23.22\00:40:25.69 In other words, the fact that the beast that was offered 00:40:25.72\00:40:29.02 had no physical blemish is an illustration or a type 00:40:29.06\00:40:33.53 of Jesus who would have no moral blemish. 00:40:33.56\00:40:36.90 But I want you to notice that not only did the victim 00:40:37.30\00:40:40.84 have to be without blemish, but the priest that offered 00:40:40.87\00:40:44.01 the victim also had to be without blemish. 00:40:44.04\00:40:46.64 Notice Leviticus 21:17-21. 00:40:46.84\00:40:51.15 Leviticus 21:17-21 00:40:51.18\00:40:55.15 So you notice that the victim had to be without blemish, 00:41:43.47\00:41:46.80 and the priest that offered the victim also had to be 00:41:47.00\00:41:50.84 without blemish. 00:41:50.87\00:41:52.47 Now the question is, what was represented 00:41:52.57\00:41:55.51 by the priest and by the victim? 00:41:55.54\00:41:57.91 Let's take, first of all, a look at what was represented 00:41:58.01\00:42:02.08 by the victim. 00:42:02.12\00:42:03.45 Go with me to Exodus 12:5. 00:42:03.49\00:42:06.99 It's talking about the Passover here. 00:42:07.02\00:42:08.86 Exodus 12:5 00:42:08.89\00:42:12.06 Here, God specifies what type of victim would be acceptable 00:42:12.56\00:42:17.77 in the Passover sacrifice. 00:42:17.80\00:42:20.24 So notice, the Passover lamb could have no what? 00:42:31.15\00:42:34.45 Could have no blemish. 00:42:34.65\00:42:35.98 Now the question is, what was represented or symbolized 00:42:36.02\00:42:39.79 by the Passover lamb? 00:42:39.82\00:42:41.16 We don't have to guess. 00:42:41.19\00:42:42.52 Go with me to 1 Peter 1:18-20. 00:42:42.86\00:42:46.90 1 Peter 1:18-20 00:42:47.10\00:42:51.43 It says there... 00:42:51.73\00:42:53.07 Incidentally, that word, "redeemed," that is used here 00:42:57.41\00:43:00.01 is the equivalent word to, "ga'al," in the Old Testament 00:43:00.68\00:43:04.78 in Hebrew. 00:43:04.81\00:43:06.15 And basically, it means the same thing is Greek. 00:43:06.18\00:43:08.08 It means, to buy back by paying a price. 00:43:08.12\00:43:11.25 So in the New Testament, when you find the word, "redeemed," 00:43:11.29\00:43:14.39 it means that you have gained your freedom, 00:43:14.42\00:43:18.03 you have regained the inheritance, because 00:43:18.06\00:43:20.63 our next of kin has paid the price to buy back what we sold. 00:43:20.66\00:43:25.00 That's the idea here. 00:43:25.03\00:43:26.37 So it says... 00:43:26.53\00:43:27.87 In other words, nobody paid silver or gold 00:43:33.27\00:43:36.04 to gain back our freedom and our inheritance. 00:43:36.08\00:43:39.35 So it says... 00:43:39.38\00:43:40.72 "...from your aimless conduct..." 00:43:43.82\00:43:45.59 That's another way of saying, "of your sins." 00:43:45.62\00:43:47.46 "...received by tradition from your fathers..." 00:43:47.52\00:43:49.82 That is, by inheritance. 00:43:49.86\00:43:51.19 What kind of lamb? 00:43:57.77\00:43:59.10 The plan was laid long before Jesus died. 00:44:07.71\00:44:10.31 So what was represented by the victim that had no blemish? 00:44:20.79\00:44:24.36 It was Jesus Christ who was represented by the victim 00:44:24.89\00:44:28.03 that had no blemish. 00:44:28.06\00:44:29.40 Now I want you to notice another text that refers 00:44:29.73\00:44:33.13 to Jesus as the victim without any blemish. 00:44:33.17\00:44:36.54 1 John 3:5 1 John 3:5 00:44:36.91\00:44:42.58 So is Jesus the victim without any sin? 00:44:57.06\00:44:59.93 Absolutely. 00:44:59.96\00:45:01.30 How important is the life of Jesus? 00:45:01.33\00:45:03.70 If I was to ask you this: 00:45:05.13\00:45:06.97 What is more important; the life of Jesus, 00:45:07.17\00:45:10.91 the perfect life of Jesus in the camp, 00:45:10.94\00:45:13.11 His death at the altar of sacrifice, 00:45:13.81\00:45:16.31 His resurrection at the laver, 00:45:16.81\00:45:19.08 His intercession in the Holy Place, 00:45:19.65\00:45:22.42 or His judgment in the Most Holy Place? 00:45:23.32\00:45:25.65 What would say is the most important function of Jesus? 00:45:25.69\00:45:29.19 I would say, yes. 00:45:30.49\00:45:32.36 All of them. 00:45:33.90\00:45:35.23 Because if Jesus had not lived a perfect life, 00:45:36.03\00:45:38.53 His sacrifice would not have been accepted. 00:45:38.57\00:45:41.04 And if His sacrifice had not been accepted, 00:45:41.80\00:45:44.04 He would not have resurrected. 00:45:44.07\00:45:45.54 And if He had not resurrected, He would not serve as our 00:45:46.41\00:45:49.28 Intercessor in the Holy Place. 00:45:49.31\00:45:51.11 And there would be no judgment. 00:45:51.75\00:45:53.31 And no cleansing of the Sanctuary. 00:45:53.75\00:45:55.58 You know, many Christians just dwell on the cross. 00:45:56.05\00:45:57.95 They say, "The cross, the cross, the cross." 00:45:57.99\00:45:59.52 They're dwelling just on the altar of sacrifice. 00:45:59.55\00:46:01.72 Don't get me wrong, the cross is important. 00:46:01.76\00:46:04.63 The death of Jesus for sin is important. 00:46:04.66\00:46:07.00 But it would have had no value unless Jesus had first 00:46:07.03\00:46:09.73 lived a perfect life in the camp so that He could offer the law 00:46:09.76\00:46:14.57 perfection in our place. 00:46:14.60\00:46:16.67 So basically what Jesus did was He lived His life, 00:46:17.31\00:46:20.24 and it is available to every single human being 00:46:20.48\00:46:23.71 who has ever drawn breath. 00:46:23.75\00:46:25.15 He provided a perfect life of perfect righteousness 00:46:25.18\00:46:28.88 for every person who has ever lived in the 00:46:28.92\00:46:30.89 history of planet earth. 00:46:30.92\00:46:32.25 And so you say, "Well, that means then that 00:46:32.29\00:46:33.79 everybody is going to be saved." 00:46:33.82\00:46:35.16 No. 00:46:35.19\00:46:36.52 What is the most famous verse in the Bible? 00:46:37.03\00:46:38.96 You even find it at football games between the goal posts. 00:46:40.63\00:46:44.07 Maybe it's to convert the kicker, or perhaps 00:46:44.23\00:46:48.60 it's to distract the kicker. 00:46:48.64\00:46:50.07 To lead him to think about other things. 00:46:50.37\00:46:52.11 But anyway, you find John 3:16. 00:46:52.41\00:46:55.01 And everybody likes to emphasize the first half of John 3:16. 00:46:55.34\00:46:58.78 "For God so loved the world, that He gave 00:46:59.11\00:47:02.15 His only begotten Son." 00:47:02.18\00:47:03.65 Period. 00:47:03.69\00:47:05.02 But they forget that the second half of the verse 00:47:05.82\00:47:08.22 has conditions. 00:47:08.32\00:47:09.99 Because the second half of the verse says, 00:47:10.99\00:47:12.96 "...that whosoever believes in Him should not perish, 00:47:12.99\00:47:16.40 but have everlasting life." 00:47:16.43\00:47:17.83 Was it vitally important that Jesus live a perfect life 00:47:18.13\00:47:20.94 in our place? 00:47:20.97\00:47:22.30 That He weaver a perfect robe of righteousness 00:47:22.34\00:47:24.54 that He could offer us? 00:47:24.57\00:47:25.91 Yes. But it only becomes ours when we meet the conditions. 00:47:25.94\00:47:30.01 So was the provision of His life complete for everyone? 00:47:30.81\00:47:35.02 Yes. And tomorrow we're going to find that His death 00:47:35.12\00:47:37.65 on the cross was a complete death for every sin 00:47:37.69\00:47:40.96 that has ever been committed, as a provision. 00:47:40.99\00:47:43.96 Does that mean that everybody is going to benefit? 00:47:44.09\00:47:46.13 No. Because you have to claim it. 00:47:46.26\00:47:48.70 So what I'm saying is that the work of Jesus 00:47:49.43\00:47:51.97 in the camp and in the court is for everybody. 00:47:52.00\00:47:55.30 Beginning with His work in the Holy Place, His intercession, 00:47:55.74\00:47:59.14 He applies His life and His death to those who meet 00:47:59.34\00:48:02.78 the conditions. 00:48:02.81\00:48:04.15 And then it becomes an individual thing. 00:48:04.78\00:48:07.35 It's not corporate for the whole world. 00:48:07.62\00:48:09.62 It's for those who claim what Jesus did. 00:48:09.82\00:48:13.25 Now Jesus was not only the perfect victim, 00:48:13.72\00:48:16.46 the victim without blemish. 00:48:16.76\00:48:18.23 We just read some text here. 00:48:18.33\00:48:20.16 1 Peter 1:18-20 says that He was the Lamb 00:48:20.20\00:48:24.53 without blemish and without spot. 00:48:24.57\00:48:26.37 We read 1 John 3:5 where it says that in Him there is no sin. 00:48:26.40\00:48:30.54 But the Bible also tells us that Jesus was the 00:48:30.71\00:48:33.98 unblemished Priest. 00:48:34.01\00:48:35.81 Notice what we find in Hebrews 4:15. 00:48:36.41\00:48:39.78 Hebrews 4:15 00:48:40.38\00:48:42.98 "...but was tempted in most points..." 00:48:50.93\00:48:53.33 Oh, okay. My eyes must be failing me. 00:48:56.97\00:48:59.83 So it says... 00:49:00.40\00:49:01.74 "...but was tempted in some points..." 00:49:05.17\00:49:08.24 No, it says He "was tempted in all points like Adam was..." 00:49:09.71\00:49:15.28 No, it doesn't say like Adam was. 00:49:15.95\00:49:18.99 It says, He "was tempted in all points as we are..." 00:49:19.79\00:49:24.73 But there's a difference. 00:49:24.76\00:49:26.09 "...as we are, but without sin." 00:49:26.63\00:49:29.50 Did Jesus offer the law absolute sinless righteousness? 00:49:29.53\00:49:34.47 Yes He did. 00:49:34.50\00:49:35.84 And He did it for every single human being 00:49:35.87\00:49:38.41 who has ever lived in the history of planet earth. 00:49:38.44\00:49:41.24 So we're going to notice that in this way God answers the 00:49:41.88\00:49:45.95 argument that Satan used that we began with 00:49:45.98\00:49:49.45 in our study this evening. 00:49:49.48\00:49:50.82 In a moment we'll go to that. 00:49:50.85\00:49:52.19 Every act of obedience of Jesus added a thread 00:49:52.49\00:49:57.23 to the perfect robe of righteousness. 00:49:57.63\00:49:59.83 And when Jesus said, "It is finished," on the cross, 00:50:00.30\00:50:03.06 the last thread was added to the perfect robe of righteousness 00:50:03.47\00:50:08.24 that He is willing to offer to every single sinner 00:50:08.27\00:50:12.11 who is repentant and confesses his sin 00:50:12.14\00:50:14.64 and trusts in Jesus Christ as his Savior and as His Lord. 00:50:14.68\00:50:19.55 So we do not have a High Priest who can't sympathize with us. 00:50:19.95\00:50:23.45 He was tempted in all things, and yet He never sinned. 00:50:23.49\00:50:28.32 He was an unblemished Priest. 00:50:28.36\00:50:31.96 Now let's notice another text that speaks about Jesus 00:50:32.33\00:50:35.06 as the unblemished Priest. 00:50:35.10\00:50:37.23 Hebrews 7:25-26 Hebrews 7:25-26 00:50:37.27\00:50:45.44 "Therefore He is also able to save to the uttermost 00:50:45.57\00:50:52.28 those who come to God through Him..." 00:50:52.65\00:50:55.78 Now we're going to study more of that particular phrase. 00:50:56.65\00:50:59.25 It's very interesting. 00:50:59.29\00:51:00.62 So who is Jesus able to save to the uttermost? 00:51:00.66\00:51:04.43 Did He make provision for everyone to be saved? 00:51:04.76\00:51:07.06 The provision is for everyone to be saved. 00:51:07.10\00:51:09.20 But is everybody going to be saved? 00:51:09.30\00:51:11.27 No. Notice what it says. 00:51:11.30\00:51:13.17 So must we come to God through the intercession of Jesus Christ 00:51:18.44\00:51:22.04 in order to be saved? 00:51:22.08\00:51:23.41 Yes. That's an individual thing. 00:51:23.45\00:51:25.15 It's claiming what Jesus did personally and individually. 00:51:26.18\00:51:30.75 And it continues saying here... 00:51:31.02\00:51:32.85 Who is, "them"? 00:51:43.87\00:51:45.20 Those who come to God through Him. 00:51:45.23\00:51:47.40 And then verse 26 tells us what kind of High Priest He is. 00:51:47.84\00:51:51.37 Does that talk about the moral perfection of Christ? 00:52:05.59\00:52:08.42 Could Jesus present perfect righteousness before the Father 00:52:08.76\00:52:12.29 if He had not lived a life of perfect righteousness? 00:52:12.33\00:52:15.36 No. 00:52:15.40\00:52:16.73 So how important is the life of Jesus before His death? 00:52:16.77\00:52:20.30 Folks, it's just as important as His death. 00:52:20.77\00:52:24.04 Now let's go back to Satan's argument. 00:52:24.37\00:52:26.84 Satan's argument was composed of two particular points. 00:52:27.38\00:52:31.58 We're talking about the last new argument after sin 00:52:31.61\00:52:34.68 entered the world. 00:52:34.72\00:52:36.05 Point number one, Satan says to God, 00:52:36.18\00:52:39.02 "The law requires absolute sinless perfection. 00:52:39.05\00:52:43.36 And no one can offer the law that perfection 00:52:43.93\00:52:47.96 that the law requires." 00:52:48.00\00:52:49.43 That's point number one. 00:52:49.90\00:52:51.27 Was the devil right that no one on planet earth 00:52:51.70\00:52:54.10 could offer the law sinless perfection 00:52:54.20\00:52:56.37 or perfect righteousness? 00:52:56.40\00:52:57.74 He was right. 00:52:57.77\00:52:59.11 But of course, he didn't exactly know at that point 00:52:59.21\00:53:02.04 what the solution was going to be. 00:53:02.08\00:53:03.55 That the One who created all was going to offer to come 00:53:03.58\00:53:07.12 and live in place of all. 00:53:07.15\00:53:09.05 And now the second point that the devil argued was, 00:53:09.82\00:53:12.95 "Therefore, because no one is able to offer righteousness 00:53:13.49\00:53:17.79 to the law, therefore everyone is under the sentence of death." 00:53:17.83\00:53:24.17 A double whammy. 00:53:24.20\00:53:25.53 We cannot offer perfection to the law, and therefore 00:53:26.63\00:53:30.41 Satan says to God, "You said it. 00:53:30.44\00:53:32.71 You said that if anyone does not offer perfection to the law, 00:53:32.81\00:53:36.51 then that person has to..." What? 00:53:36.95\00:53:38.41 "...has to die. 00:53:38.45\00:53:39.78 And because everyone has sinned, everyone has to die." 00:53:39.81\00:53:43.32 Now the subject that we're studying this evening 00:53:43.99\00:53:46.29 solves the first problem. 00:53:47.06\00:53:49.09 The problem of nobody being able to offer righteousness, 00:53:49.12\00:53:53.53 perfect righteousness, to the law of God. 00:53:53.56\00:53:56.16 Jesus answered Satan's first accusation 00:53:56.67\00:53:59.83 by coming to this earth, becoming our next of kin, 00:53:59.87\00:54:04.07 and living the life that we should live in our place. 00:54:04.44\00:54:08.28 In this way, we've studied, He wove a robe of perfect 00:54:08.64\00:54:14.28 righteousness which is freely available to all who come 00:54:14.32\00:54:19.35 to Him repentant and by faith. 00:54:19.45\00:54:22.62 There is now a perfect life that can satisfy 00:54:23.16\00:54:27.13 the just demands of the law. 00:54:27.16\00:54:29.16 And all we have to do is become brothers of Jesus, 00:54:29.20\00:54:32.80 all we have to do is receive Jesus through repentance, 00:54:32.83\00:54:35.80 confession, and faith in Him and Jesus will take His 00:54:35.84\00:54:39.11 perfect life and He will credit it to our account. 00:54:39.14\00:54:42.28 And God will look at us as covered with the perfect robe 00:54:42.31\00:54:46.98 of Christ's righteousness which He wove by His life 00:54:47.02\00:54:53.36 on planet earth. 00:54:53.39\00:54:54.79 Now what about the second problem? 00:54:55.29\00:54:57.93 There was a second serious problem. 00:54:57.96\00:55:00.00 And that is, that the law not only requires 00:55:00.70\00:55:03.30 perfect righteousness, but if righteousness is not 00:55:03.33\00:55:07.67 offered to the law, the law says what? 00:55:07.70\00:55:10.84 You must die. 00:55:10.87\00:55:13.38 So was it enough for Jesus to live a life of 00:55:13.61\00:55:16.54 perfect righteousness that He could offer the law? 00:55:16.58\00:55:18.75 It wasn't enough. 00:55:18.95\00:55:20.28 How would the problem of all of the sins that had been committed 00:55:20.62\00:55:24.69 be resolved? 00:55:24.72\00:55:26.05 Somebody had to pay the penalty for the sins, right? 00:55:26.09\00:55:28.82 Are you understanding the second problem? 00:55:28.86\00:55:30.49 And so Jesus says, "I'm going to solve this problem too. 00:55:30.69\00:55:34.70 The first problem is solved because I went, 00:55:35.03\00:55:37.23 I suffered all of their temptations, 00:55:37.27\00:55:39.17 and I never sinned. 00:55:39.20\00:55:40.54 I wove a perfect robe of righteousness 00:55:40.57\00:55:42.34 for every single person who has ever lived 00:55:42.37\00:55:44.27 in the history of the earth." 00:55:44.31\00:55:45.64 And anyone can come repentant, confessing, and in faith, 00:55:45.67\00:55:48.98 and can claim that perfect robe of righteousness. 00:55:49.01\00:55:51.35 And they can stand before the throne of God 00:55:51.38\00:55:53.92 guiltless in Jesus Christ. 00:55:54.15\00:55:56.32 But Jesus says, "I'm going to solve the second problem too." 00:55:56.42\00:55:58.65 And this will introduce our subject for tomorrow. 00:55:58.69\00:56:01.69 Jesus says, "And then after I've lived a perfect life, 00:56:02.22\00:56:05.43 I am going to go to the garden of Gethsemane, 00:56:05.53\00:56:08.06 and I'm going to go to the cross, 00:56:08.10\00:56:09.53 and I'm going to bear the sins of the whole world. 00:56:09.56\00:56:12.43 Every sin that has ever been committed in the history of 00:56:12.60\00:56:15.80 planet earth, I am going to bear it upon Myself. 00:56:15.84\00:56:18.64 I'm going to suffer the penalty for all of the sins 00:56:18.74\00:56:21.74 of My creatures. 00:56:21.78\00:56:23.11 Because I created them all, I have the right to take the place 00:56:23.14\00:56:27.18 of all of them. 00:56:27.22\00:56:28.55 And I will take all of the sins upon Myself 00:56:28.58\00:56:30.89 and I will suffer the penalty that all of them should suffer. 00:56:30.92\00:56:35.16 And then if anyone comes to Me repentant, 00:56:35.26\00:56:38.76 confessing their sins, sorrow for sin, 00:56:38.86\00:56:42.03 and having faith in Me, I will take My life, My perfect robe, 00:56:42.06\00:56:47.40 and I will place it upon them. 00:56:47.44\00:56:49.04 All of their sins will be forgiven because I bore them 00:56:49.24\00:56:52.41 on the cross." 00:56:52.44\00:56:53.78 And those individuals will be seen as if 00:56:53.81\00:56:57.95 they had never sinned. 00:56:57.98\00:56:59.91 They will be accepted in the Beloved. 00:56:59.95\00:57:03.25 So let me ask you, does the perfect life answer one of the 00:57:04.75\00:57:08.42 accusations of Satan? 00:57:08.46\00:57:10.23 That no one can offer perfection to the law, 00:57:11.33\00:57:13.90 therefore everybody is doomed to die? 00:57:13.93\00:57:15.33 Absolutely, because Jesus offered it in the place of 00:57:15.36\00:57:17.97 all of His creatures. 00:57:18.00\00:57:19.33 Does the death of Jesus on the cross 00:57:19.50\00:57:21.50 answer the second part of that accusation? 00:57:21.54\00:57:24.27 Yes. 00:57:24.31\00:57:25.64 And by the way, when Jesus dies on the cross, 00:57:25.67\00:57:28.94 He shows both the justice of God and the love of God. 00:57:29.04\00:57:32.01 Remember that the devil tried to present a conflict between 00:57:32.05\00:57:35.25 the justice of God and the love of God? 00:57:35.28\00:57:38.12 He said, "If You don't punish man justly, 00:57:38.15\00:57:41.29 then You're a liar. 00:57:41.32\00:57:42.79 Because justice demands the death of the sinner. 00:57:42.82\00:57:44.93 But if You destroy the sinner, what God who loves 00:57:44.96\00:57:47.50 is going to destroy the sinner?" 00:57:47.53\00:57:48.86 But the beautiful thing is that Jesus came to this world 00:57:49.36\00:57:53.03 and He suffered under the justice of God, 00:57:53.07\00:57:56.87 showing that God loves. 00:57:57.17\00:57:58.91 In other words, Jesus proved that the devil's 00:57:59.24\00:58:01.54 argument was wrong. 00:58:01.58\00:58:02.91 God can be the just and the justifier of those 00:58:02.94\00:58:06.68 who believe in Jesus Christ. 00:58:06.72\00:58:08.88
