But there is not another ministry out there that 00:07:30.98\00:07:35.48 is meeting not just the physical but the spiritual 00:07:35.48\00:07:39.82 mental, the all of the aspects that they take a holistic 00:07:39.82\00:07:44.59 approach. You're going to see what I mean if you've never 00:07:44.59\00:07:47.23 seen him before. Eric's been here, probably 15 to 20 times 00:07:47.23\00:07:51.27 that 3ABN because people love to hear the updates from this 00:07:51.27\00:07:55.20 ministry. So, Eric, we just want you to an enemy introduce 00:07:55.20\00:08:00.08 again. We have Eric Camarillo who is the president and 00:08:00.08\00:08:04.08 founder of Salt and in his beautiful wife, I believe Bueno 00:08:04.08\00:08:09.52 Committee and we're going to call you mail, Yahoo. So tell 00:08:09.52\00:08:15.16 us 00:08:15.16\00:08:16.42 the wind got Persky few the fusion for this. 00:08:16.42\00:08:20.73 I know you spent an all-night prayer meeting with your France 00:08:20.73\00:08:24.37 toast to pass it. 00:08:24.37\00:08:25.47 >> Yeah, yeah. So we know we were we we got inspired the 00:08:25.47\00:08:29.74 idea that the vision for ministry like this and I was 00:08:29.74\00:08:33.98 maybe a year after coming to Christ. And, 00:08:33.98\00:08:38.28 you know, we we mean to friends of ours that we just got into 00:08:38.28\00:08:41.88 his room and we literally spent all night praying line we we we 00:08:41.88\00:08:45.95 knew salt was what we wanted to call the ministry saw 00:08:45.95\00:08:49.16 exemplifies what we wanted this ministry to represent. 00:08:49.16\00:08:53.60 And but we want we want we knew that an acronym would make it 00:08:53.60\00:08:57.83 extra special that the secret recipe, you know, of the 00:08:57.83\00:09:02.57 the name. So we prayed all night. We had different 00:09:02.57\00:09:05.64 acronyms that got inspired. And and ultimately we we texted 00:09:05.64\00:09:09.98 almost like a poll Tata Group of people he knew were 00:09:09.98\00:09:12.48 connected to God. We said, you know, can you vote on on this 00:09:12.48\00:09:16.28 where prayerfully considering an acronym for this for SALT 00:09:16.28\00:09:19.49 and service love together got the overwhelming majority of 00:09:19.49\00:09:23.29 people that wanted to, you know that that where voting and we 00:09:23.29\00:09:27.73 want with it service love together. It's it's it means so 00:09:27.73\00:09:31.00 much and so simple, but it means so much. You know, 00:09:31.00\00:09:33.47 we're not just serving. There's so many people that serve but 00:09:33.47\00:09:36.94 are missing that loving green and right. And you know that 00:09:36.94\00:09:40.64 true relational, yes, shun. Yes, exactly. And then there's 00:09:40.64\00:09:45.11 so many people that might say like, oh, yeah, we love our 00:09:45.11\00:09:47.75 community, but they're not serving. You don't see the 00:09:47.75\00:09:50.59 action, right? So seen those 2 things together is really how 00:09:50.59\00:09:55.39 we believe Christ with the ministry, you know, and that's 00:09:55.39\00:09:58.39 kind of 00:09:58.39\00:09:59.93 >> him and how it went. Yeah, we're going to come back to get 00:09:59.93\00:10:02.20 a little bit more of Eric's testimony. But first, I just 00:10:02.20\00:10:06.90 melt. We want to hear your story. County 2 grew up in a 00:10:06.90\00:10:10.57 Christian home. 00:10:10.57\00:10:12.17 >> So, yes, I did grow up in a Christian home. My father was a 00:10:12.17\00:10:17.71 Cuban man and my mother is Puerto Rican and both of their 00:10:17.71\00:10:21.68 families come from a long generation of UM's as the A's. 00:10:21.68\00:10:26.55 So yeah, it is Chris. Yes, haha. So, yeah. So I didn't 00:10:26.55\00:10:32.43 grow up in this church and as time went on, you know, they're 00:10:32.43\00:10:39.00 there did come a point where I kind of 00:10:39.00\00:10:42.17 battled on, you know, is this the truth? And I believe in 00:10:42.17\00:10:45.31 this because of my parents are, is this is this that you, 00:10:45.31\00:10:48.91 you know, once I did start kind of searching out just on 00:10:48.91\00:10:52.01 exploring through different religions, got wonderful church 00:10:52.01\00:10:55.02 is now. Yeah. And one day 00:10:55.02\00:11:00.26 I was I was reading something that was from a different 00:11:00.26\00:11:03.69 denomination and it was like I could hear God's voice saying 00:11:03.69\00:11:09.46 why are you searching for something else when you have 00:11:09.46\00:11:11.90 the truth right now? And I just stopped right there. And I put 00:11:11.90\00:11:16.47 away would have had and I just started crying and praying and 00:11:16.47\00:11:19.77 saying, OK, lord, you know, and from then on, you know, it's 00:11:19.77\00:11:23.91 just continue to be just this journey and I'm growing and 00:11:23.91\00:11:27.75 Christ's love. And I started volunteering with salt. When I 00:11:27.75\00:11:31.35 moved to Orlando, I'm somewhat Orlando and mid 2015 and I was 00:11:31.35\00:11:36.93 searching for a minute shows praying and I was saying Lord 00:11:36.93\00:11:39.93 Guide me into a menace. She way can serve you and where you can 00:11:39.93\00:11:43.37 meet godly people 00:11:43.37\00:11:45.17 because I knew once you move to somewhere new, you want to make 00:11:45.17\00:11:48.07 sure you have good influence. And so I prayed. And and a 00:11:48.07\00:11:53.34 friend of mine ended up telling me, hey, there's this ministry 00:11:53.34\00:11:56.91 called Salt in Orlando when I check them out. And so I 00:11:56.91\00:12:00.72 started volunteering in 2016 and that's when Eric and I'm 00:12:00.72\00:12:05.82 and we became friends continued, you know, working in 00:12:05.82\00:12:09.19 the minute she together and eventually got married and 00:12:09.19\00:12:13.29 Twenty-twenty good base to give us the Reader's Digest version 00:12:13.29\00:12:16.83 of your marriage. They got married in the middle of COVID 00:12:16.83\00:12:20.27 just everything when you're planning to speak waiting and 00:12:20.27\00:12:23.17 everything is shut down. Yes. So we were in the middle 00:12:23.17\00:12:26.54 of planning everything. And we found out, you know, that the 00:12:26.54\00:12:31.45 pandemic was happening. And so the pastor who was going to 00:12:31.45\00:12:36.12 marry us, he calls me and he says, do you guys want to get 00:12:36.12\00:12:39.89 married tomorrow? And we're both like, yes, the you know, 00:12:39.89\00:12:44.53 good. It would do it, you know. And so I'm thankful for his 00:12:44.53\00:12:48.73 help and some friends, we all got together and within 24 00:12:48.73\00:12:53.70 hours planned any wedding. And and it just came out 00:12:53.70\00:12:57.74 beautiful. You know, I was a drive-in wedding where some of 00:12:57.74\00:13:00.61 our family members just pulled an and, you know, we have some 00:13:00.61\00:13:03.95 friends. They're just driving in. And it was beautiful. 00:13:03.95\00:13:07.18 You know, we were really thankful that God worked it out 00:13:07.18\00:13:09.65 that way. 00:13:09.65\00:13:10.89 >> He brought he brought so much together in a short time. 00:13:10.89\00:13:13.49 Yeah, yeah. I remember you got the arch from like somebody 00:13:13.49\00:13:17.39 would. Yeah for an arch for like Box or something. And then 00:13:17.39\00:13:21.80 the runway and the catering came. 00:13:21.80\00:13:24.77 >> I don't know where. Yeah, I like this is a Fatah. He did 00:13:24.77\00:13:29.87 their cars or what so is actually it's an added Venice 00:13:29.87\00:13:34.41 run a restaurant. And so the pastor kind of connected with 00:13:34.41\00:13:38.21 them to get to make us a wedding cake and catering. 00:13:38.21\00:13:41.42 It was so sweet. I mean, just the way everyone come together. 00:13:41.42\00:13:44.82 So those beautiful, what we want to do right now. 00:13:44.82\00:13:48.42 >> To introduce salt to those of you who are not familiar 00:13:48.42\00:13:52.19 with the story. We've got a short video that will give you 00:13:52.19\00:13:57.20 a little of the flavor of soapy flight and not the act. 00:13:57.20\00:14:02.60 [MUSIC] 00:14:02.60\00:14:06.01 >> Homelessness is central. And it was really difficult. 00:15:30.03\00:15:33.43 And I think as I became a Christian and started to think 00:15:33.43\00:15:36.83 about how can I take this energy that was putting into 00:15:36.83\00:15:40.24 the world before into something that 00:15:40.24\00:15:43.04 God can use. 00:15:43.04\00:15:44.34 [MUSIC] 00:15:44.34\00:15:46.94 >> So we're doing practice and will serve about 00:15:46.94\00:15:50.08 8 to 16 at the time 00:15:50.08\00:15:53.62 started growing. 00:15:53.62\00:15:54.92 >> Together we got with some friends. We came up with some 00:15:54.92\00:15:57.65 names, took a poll and salt. I was the name that came out 00:15:57.65\00:16:01.79 from Matthew 5.13, that we have the salt of the earth. So, 00:16:01.79\00:16:04.66 you know, like this was pretty much the OG group doesn't hold 00:16:04.66\00:16:08.36 1013. 00:16:08.36\00:16:10.40 So I mean, it was positive for ministries and outreach is that 00:16:10.40\00:16:14.14 Eric and a few others kind of brought together. 00:16:14.14\00:16:17.54 >> So it went from 16 to 20 to 15, 200. 00:16:17.54\00:16:24.21 >> We didn't we didn't have enough benches to fit about 00:16:24.21\00:16:27.45 people coming. 00:16:27.45\00:16:28.65 >> I didn't realize how I felt. I felt by something so simple. 00:16:28.65\00:16:32.35 We were cooking out restaurants. We would have 00:16:32.35\00:16:34.62 hotel, send us food. Have people bring food, have 00:16:34.62\00:16:37.43 churches, other organizations donate food. I kind of joke 00:16:37.43\00:16:41.70 that making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich kind of changed 00:16:41.70\00:16:44.43 my life 00:16:44.43\00:16:45.53 sorts. And we were, sir, I think close to 200 on Saturday 00:16:45.53\00:16:50.31 mornings. 00:16:50.31\00:16:52.77 >> And as we continue to share food, we didn't want to just 00:16:52.77\00:16:55.88 stop and food. 00:16:55.88\00:16:58.48 And so we we start to provide clothing, hygiene products, 00:16:58.48\00:17:02.05 which ended up leading to its fundraising for clothing 00:17:02.05\00:17:04.52 trailer. We called our Change. Trailer 00:17:04.52\00:17:08.76 started growing. 00:17:08.76\00:17:10.73 We didn't know at the time, but that trailer helped inspire 00:17:10.73\00:17:14.13 kind of our model moving forward and how we deliver our 00:17:14.13\00:17:18.10 services. 00:17:18.10\00:17:19.20 I really just meeting people where they are. 00:17:19.20\00:17:21.74 [MUSIC] 00:17:21.74\00:17:24.47 >> And then the next big milestone was a shower trailer. 00:17:24.47\00:17:27.34 >> We found out that over half of the people we were we're 00:17:27.34\00:17:30.48 serving. We're actively looking for work. But those same people 00:17:30.48\00:17:33.28 hadn't showered in 3 to 7 days. On average. There were some 00:17:33.28\00:17:36.22 people going on job interviews. The hadn't showered in 3 00:17:36.22\00:17:38.92 months. So we're like, OK, there isn't enough shower 00:17:38.92\00:17:42.02 capacity in this community. There needs to be something to 00:17:42.02\00:17:44.79 provide showers. And that's we fundraise about $40,000 for a 00:17:44.79\00:17:48.60 shower trailer. 00:17:48.60\00:17:49.96 And now we're providing food. We start to bring in help 00:17:49.96\00:17:52.60 barbers, hair cuts were doing showers and we do in clothing 00:17:52.60\00:17:57.04 and hygiene products. 00:17:57.04\00:17:58.51 >> We have a Colin trailer which is given how close, 00:17:58.51\00:18:00.68 given how close given our clothes 00:18:00.68\00:18:02.71 out of sight. This is this is kind of wasteful. 00:18:02.71\00:18:05.55 Well, let's find a solution for that. And that's where the 00:18:05.55\00:18:07.78 launch trailer came in. 00:18:07.78\00:18:09.25 [MUSIC] 00:18:09.25\00:18:13.22 >> And we start to add other services like mail services. 00:18:13.22\00:18:15.89 We had limited storage services, 00:18:15.89\00:18:19.23 charging stations for the unsheltered, 00:18:19.23\00:18:21.46 [MUSIC] 00:18:21.46\00:18:24.10 but there needed to be a comprehensive drop-in center in 00:18:24.10\00:18:27.57 downtown Orlando. Then there needs to be a a a front door 00:18:27.57\00:18:30.77 for people experiencing homelessness, a place where 00:18:30.77\00:18:33.48 someone can calm and say, I want my homelessness to an end 00:18:33.48\00:18:36.48 and a case manager can guide them through that process from 00:18:36.48\00:18:39.28 beginning to end. 00:18:39.28\00:18:40.62 >> Well, it's really start 00:18:40.62\00:18:42.72 attacking the roots of of of the homeless issue. And let's 00:18:42.72\00:18:46.62 really try to help a lot on another level. 00:18:46.62\00:18:49.96 >> Now that case management program went on that year to 00:18:49.96\00:18:52.93 help one out of 5 people, transition, shelter, housing 00:18:52.93\00:18:56.97 and 3 out of 4 take the next step toward ending their 00:18:56.97\00:18:59.53 homelessness. 00:18:59.53\00:19:01.04 And since then, they're on track to helping directly and 00:19:01.04\00:19:03.87 homelessness for either one family or person a week and 00:19:03.87\00:19:07.58 divert people away from the system because there are 00:19:07.58\00:19:10.51 systems already for teens, 00:19:10.51\00:19:13.05 the path. But I have seen the future 00:19:13.05\00:19:16.58 and you can make 00:19:16.58\00:19:18.22 [MUSIC] 00:19:18.22\00:19:23.73 homelessness in central Florida is just getting so much worse. 00:19:23.73\00:19:30.17 We are trying to do. We can to meet the need to keep up with a 00:19:30.17\00:19:34.27 need. But it's just it's it's becoming overwhelming. It's a 00:19:34.27\00:19:37.04 lot of our community is just not not able to handle the 00:19:37.04\00:19:43.41 influx that we're seeing right now. 00:19:43.41\00:19:46.18 It's not people that are there just all the time, you know, 00:19:46.18\00:19:48.75 and we're seeing a lot more first timers and so has got a 00:19:48.75\00:19:54.76 chance to write the story where we're hoping that more people 00:19:54.76\00:19:58.49 come together. And I want to be a part of the story with us 00:19:58.49\00:20:02.13 together. We're so thankful that in January of 2024, 00:20:02.13\00:20:06.77 we were awarded a grant to work with homeless youth. That's for 00:20:06.77\00:20:10.37 unaccompanied minors from age 6 to 17 and young adults from 18 00:20:10.37\00:20:14.44 to 24. 00:20:14.44\00:20:16.21 >> We just got both of our trailers delivered yesterday. 00:20:16.21\00:20:19.95 This big trailer here is going to be dedicated to youth. 00:20:19.95\00:20:22.12 Young adults experiencing homelessness. 00:20:22.12\00:20:23.92 >> We're going to be providing the case management support. 00:20:23.92\00:20:26.29 Day services supports showers and laundry all that stuff. 00:20:26.29\00:20:29.26 >> And it has both laundry and showers inside the same 00:20:29.26\00:20:32.86 trailer. We're really excited. We think it's going make a big 00:20:32.86\00:20:35.70 difference here. And that's going to be 5 days a week. 00:20:35.70\00:20:38.30 So it's basically doubling the current 5 days a week here in 00:20:38.30\00:20:41.97 downtown Orlando to now an additional 5 days a week across 00:20:41.97\00:20:45.97 the central Florida area. 00:20:45.97\00:20:47.94 >> Yeah, all the time I see myself working core price of 00:20:47.94\00:20:51.41 this, I support of the office building until my wife died 00:20:51.41\00:20:54.05 until July. And all I got in the car. It's a so I had a 00:20:54.05\00:20:57.25 stroke. 00:20:57.25\00:20:58.89 >> It's it's just it's crazy because as we see this increase 00:20:58.89\00:21:01.92 in homelessness, the increase in evictions, you know, the 00:21:01.92\00:21:04.39 increase in rent prices were not seen an increase in wages, 00:21:04.39\00:21:07.96 the wages, he's pretty much been the same. It's no longer 00:21:07.96\00:21:11.10 just the homelessness crisis and it's an emergency and this 00:21:11.10\00:21:14.50 is nothing new. We're not doing anything new here. This is this 00:21:14.50\00:21:18.67 is what God has asked people to do. And we're just following 00:21:18.67\00:21:23.58 that calling and and where we're excited because so many 00:21:23.58\00:21:27.92 people have joined this, calling it with us 00:21:27.92\00:21:31.35 every day is a new page when the story that got his writing 00:21:31.35\00:21:35.52 through solved, 00:21:35.52\00:21:36.66 we all are just working together to help provide the 00:21:36.66\00:21:41.06 most vulnerable. Not only with their basic needs, the most 00:21:41.06\00:21:44.23 basic human needs, but also to help and their homelessness to 00:21:44.23\00:21:48.57 to revive that, hoping that that one day they do have to be 00:21:48.57\00:21:53.17 in it living on the street. But I just have 00:22:19.53\00:22:22.24 to tell you, it is not only in central Florida. This ministry 00:22:22.24\00:22:27.71 motto is now expanding and you're going to get to hear 00:22:27.71\00:22:32.11 this, how it is available to happen in any city. So if you 00:22:32.11\00:22:38.19 have a heart, a passion for the homeless, you really want to 00:22:38.19\00:22:44.16 listen to this entire interview. Now, I have to ask a 00:22:44.16\00:22:47.86 quick question because we we failed to mention you are a 00:22:47.86\00:22:51.87 councillor for an academy, right? Yes. So will you 00:22:51.87\00:22:55.74 instrumental in putting together that counseling part 00:22:55.74\00:22:59.34 of this? 00:22:59.34\00:23:00.54 >> So he consulted a lot with me when they were beginning 00:23:00.54\00:23:04.31 that counseling wing women's solved. But I think that's kind 00:23:04.31\00:23:10.35 of yeah, he he. 00:23:10.35\00:23:11.85 >> We should. She was. You could say she was an advisor. 00:23:11.85\00:23:15.42 Starr said it to the starting of that and we had our we have 00:23:15.42\00:23:18.63 a also another person doing the mental services and less 00:23:18.63\00:23:23.70 clinical social worker on our team that she's also now since 00:23:23.70\00:23:26.80 when. 00:23:26.80\00:23:28.00 >> That that really kind of put all the parts together for the 00:23:28.00\00:23:31.27 one thing that was catching my attention as you've done an 00:23:31.27\00:23:33.88 excellent job tracking. And yeah, and that really tells the 00:23:33.88\00:23:38.48 story right there 00:23:38.48\00:23:40.48 rather than yes, we saw a bunch of people today. We made a 00:23:40.48\00:23:44.12 difference in people's lives. But if you're in for the long 00:23:44.12\00:23:47.06 haul, 00:23:47.06\00:23:48.32 when you're going getting grants and 7, etcetera, this is 00:23:48.32\00:23:51.93 what's really happening. 00:23:51.93\00:23:53.36 >> Yeah. What you did that was so unique in my estimation, 00:23:53.36\00:23:57.40 often people will feed the hungry. But would you started 00:23:57.40\00:24:00.67 your feeding program? You were doing data-gathering. Tell us. 00:24:00.67\00:24:04.94 >> How all of this to skip expanded? Yeah. So we're very 00:24:04.94\00:24:09.71 big on data. We have we actually have a data analyst on 00:24:09.71\00:24:13.35 our staff. We have reporting analysts, we have a data and 00:24:13.35\00:24:16.62 grants department in our organization. I mean, it's very 00:24:16.62\00:24:19.89 important to us because data is what drives impact that should 00:24:19.89\00:24:22.99 drive our direction, that that's what tells us for doing 00:24:22.99\00:24:25.36 good more for it. We need to improve somewhere. So it but 00:24:25.36\00:24:29.66 yeah, it started really early on with the food because we 00:24:29.66\00:24:33.03 started to surveys were gathering that data and like, 00:24:33.03\00:24:35.90 okay, what is it that you actually need? I think it's 00:24:35.90\00:24:38.77 very easy for us when you're dealing with someone 00:24:38.77\00:24:40.61 experiencing homelessness, the need to compete and less right. 00:24:40.61\00:24:43.78 And so you just kind of, you know, people just kind of get 00:24:43.78\00:24:46.72 together. They they they kind of assume and assess what 00:24:46.72\00:24:49.98 people need. And they're probably a lot of time. They're 00:24:49.98\00:24:52.12 not wrong. They're they're providing things that they 00:24:52.12\00:24:54.02 need. But when when you actually talk to them and ask 00:24:54.02\00:24:57.29 them and collect that data on what is is needed, it really 00:24:57.29\00:25:01.33 does help you pinpoint your direction. And so 00:25:01.33\00:25:04.43 we did that with, you know, while we're collecting food, 00:25:04.43\00:25:06.43 that's what drove that the clothing trailer. We did 00:25:06.43\00:25:09.70 surveys that, you know, and as you saw in the video, 3 months 00:25:09.70\00:25:13.41 without a shower and going on job interviews, that's that's a 00:25:13.41\00:25:16.01 problem. We need that we use that data to fundraise for the 00:25:16.01\00:25:19.28 shower trailer, actually 3 AB env orphaned and almost half of 00:25:19.28\00:25:22.65 that trailer. We're presenting that year. And and you know it 00:25:22.65\00:25:27.02 and we just continue to use that data. I mean, there's so 00:25:27.02\00:25:29.72 much I have so much in my head as far as the data goes. 00:25:29.72\00:25:32.63 But I might some of that might pop out throughout the show. 00:25:32.63\00:25:36.60 But but, yeah, it's a it's a big part of who we are. 00:25:36.60\00:25:39.77 >> Well, you know, there's no use getting clean clothes if 00:25:39.77\00:25:42.60 you haven't had to shout last, right. And then what I love is 00:25:42.60\00:25:46.24 that you said, OK, now that you see you're giving out so many 00:25:46.24\00:25:50.35 close, it was like being we need laundry. Yeah, but 00:25:50.35\00:25:56.58 I don't think he came out the video and have sought to Scott 00:25:56.58\00:25:59.15 to say this. I thought one of the most exciting things that 00:25:59.15\00:26:03.96 use and I mean, this is little, but it shows have detail. 00:26:03.96\00:26:07.30 They are is that you actually have a trailer. It just just 00:26:07.30\00:26:11.80 imagine it all that you own in the world is in a basket or, 00:26:11.80\00:26:17.87 you know, ID cards from a grocery baggers. Yeah. But if 00:26:17.87\00:26:22.51 you have to go for an interview, who's going to watch 00:26:22.51\00:26:25.88 your stuff? 00:26:25.88\00:26:27.32 And so you have a trailer that they can lock threw thing to 00:26:27.32\00:26:31.82 see and and go for the new for, you know, itself safe. And now 00:26:31.82\00:26:35.76 you've got the male trailer cause. Most of them could get 00:26:35.76\00:26:38.63 mail. It's just precious. So tell us some of the other 00:26:38.63\00:26:42.66 services. So you've got it. We we saw there. But let's 00:26:42.66\00:26:45.77 talk. Yeah, that's meeting their physical needs now. 00:26:45.77\00:26:50.24 Tell us about the mental spiritual, etcetera. 00:26:50.24\00:26:53.71 >> Yeah. So so all of those services like like we're Thomas 00:26:53.71\00:26:56.88 showers, male storage laundry. All of that is essentially a 00:26:56.88\00:27:02.48 gateway. You know, we meet those basic needs. We develop 00:27:02.48\00:27:05.09 trust and relationship to the services. And and then after 00:27:05.09\00:27:09.26 that, the goal is to link them with our case management team, 00:27:09.26\00:27:12.63 because our case management team can then go. And and what 00:27:12.63\00:27:16.70 they do is they do a full assessment to figure all the 00:27:16.70\00:27:19.57 needs of the person than they help them prioritize. Those 00:27:19.57\00:27:22.57 needs by turning them into next steps. So okay, John Smith, 00:27:22.57\00:27:25.97 your next step is to get an idea. Let's katyn organization 00:27:25.97\00:27:29.11 to get your I D we set up a follow-up appointment to hold 00:27:29.11\00:27:32.05 them accountable to that referral. They come back and 00:27:32.05\00:27:34.95 you get your ID great. Let's go on to the next step, OK to this 00:27:34.95\00:27:37.65 organization. 00:27:37.65\00:27:39.09 However, if there's an organization that cannot help 00:27:39.09\00:27:41.56 them or can't meet that need, we step in to fill the gap. 00:27:41.56\00:27:44.66 So we're always there helping them to take these next steps. 00:27:44.66\00:27:47.50 Then that's our case management team. It's almost like a guy 00:27:47.50\00:27:50.90 like a like a life coach, like, like out councillor in a sense, 00:27:50.90\00:27:54.77 you know. And then we have our mental health counselor, 00:27:54.77\00:27:57.61 the helps meet the the mental health needs of our gas. 00:27:57.61\00:28:02.54 You know, guess that struggle, maybe with addiction or there's 00:28:02.54\00:28:06.45 so much trauma someone goes through before they experience 00:28:06.45\00:28:09.78 homelessness. And after that experience, homelessness is 00:28:09.78\00:28:12.72 even more trauma. And so being able to process through that 00:28:12.72\00:28:16.06 trauma is really going to help people continue to take those 00:28:16.06\00:28:19.66 steps. Writes, our mental health counselor kind of 00:28:19.66\00:28:22.33 supports our case management team in that way. And then you 00:28:22.33\00:28:25.30 have are spiritual care team, right? Our spiritual care team. 00:28:25.30\00:28:28.60 They do group 5 studies 4 days a week, one-on-one studies, 00:28:28.60\00:28:31.37 church services for gas. You'll see them just outside 00:28:31.37\00:28:34.94 talking to people getting to hear their story. They they 00:28:34.94\00:28:38.41 knowing their first name knowing their first names, 00:28:38.41\00:28:41.38 you know, going out to lunch, going out to dinner with 00:28:41.38\00:28:43.32 people, inviting people to their home, even I mean, 00:28:43.32\00:28:45.89 they even go last year. They did to weddings for guests that 00:28:45.89\00:28:49.26 we're experiencing homelessness, but more than the 00:28:49.26\00:28:50.89 housing they called them up like, Hey, can you do our 00:28:50.89\00:28:53.43 wedding? And they did to weddings. Last year. I wonder 00:28:53.43\00:28:55.96 Fayed memorial services for gets the pass away and help our 00:28:55.96\00:28:59.03 other guest kind of process that they do house blessings 00:28:59.03\00:29:02.94 for guests to move into housing. And whenever guests go 00:29:02.94\00:29:05.64 to prison or to the hospital, though, going actually go visit 00:29:05.64\00:29:08.38 them and check up on them, see how they're doing. They 00:29:08.38\00:29:11.11 literally are, you know, our our paid staff to be that the 00:29:11.11\00:29:16.72 physical example of what I believe. I mean, we know Christ 00:29:16.72\00:29:20.79 would be doing if he was here right now on this earth, 00:29:20.79\00:29:23.66 along with our other team, you know, working together. But 00:29:23.66\00:29:26.49 it's it's been it's been really cool. And they they also focus 00:29:26.49\00:29:30.47 on housing retention. So they'll visit our guest that 00:29:30.47\00:29:33.34 moving the housing. They'll continue to visit them to see 00:29:33.34\00:29:35.47 if they have any other needs so that we can make sure that can 00:29:35.47\00:29:38.57 rates retain that housing that they got. So. 00:29:38.57\00:29:42.44 >> So it's truly holistic. Yes, and the bottom line is for 00:29:42.44\00:29:46.65 us, which is probably fairly unusual because most people, 00:29:46.65\00:29:50.62 they 00:29:50.62\00:29:51.75 the hit a wall someplace in there and do that. They don't 00:29:51.75\00:29:55.16 take care of business and find out what we can do beyond that. 00:29:55.16\00:29:59.59 >> I cannot imagine why I releasing a documentary where 00:29:59.59\00:30:04.20 out 00:30:04.20\00:30:06.33 journalist went out on the streets to to ride a little 00:30:06.33\00:30:10.21 article about it and he spent 48 hours of the street and 00:30:10.21\00:30:15.34 watching what he went through in the shock. You know, we have 00:30:15.34\00:30:18.95 no idea and we're seeing more seniors, but we're also seeing 00:30:18.95\00:30:22.88 more youth and we'll get to it and second, but tell us about 00:30:22.88\00:30:26.59 your new trade group that launched in January of 20 for? 00:30:26.59\00:30:29.92 Yeah, yeah. So and one thing I failed to mention earlier was 00:30:29.92\00:30:34.93 one of the one of the key things that are our pastors to 00:30:34.93\00:30:38.03 as a developing these relationships with people. 00:30:38.03\00:30:40.60 >> They do an appeal for baptism once a year. So last 00:30:40.60\00:30:44.24 year they were able to baptize 10 people, 10 for a board, 00:30:44.24\00:30:47.28 you know, give their life to Christ in baptism. And they 00:30:47.28\00:30:50.25 and, you know, the result to end their homelessness just 00:30:50.25\00:30:52.55 gets so much higher. You know, they increase their case 00:30:52.55\00:30:54.95 management appointments. They want to access more 00:30:54.95\00:30:57.25 services. I mean, you could really see God, you know, 00:30:57.25\00:31:00.76 working through them. And 00:31:00.76\00:31:03.16 but I I want to make sure I mention that. 00:31:03.16\00:31:06.19 But yes, so when it comes to the trailer January 2024, 00:31:06.19\00:31:11.00 we actually have a picture of that ribbon cutting. We did. 00:31:11.00\00:31:13.23 It was a small ribbon cutting on. But we had a real estate 00:31:13.23\00:31:16.37 company that said, you know what, we want to contribute to 00:31:16.37\00:31:19.37 this mission. We want to be a part of it. They they actually 00:31:19.37\00:31:21.94 purchase that trailer behind them right there. Wow. It's a 3 00:31:21.94\00:31:25.61 bathroom trailer. And one thing we added to this trailer, 00:31:25.61\00:31:28.28 2 things actually that were really key. We have an 80 a 00:31:28.28\00:31:31.29 bathroom. So now those mobility challenges, there's a 00:31:31.29\00:31:35.16 wheelchair lift. If people are in wheelchairs, about a 3rd of 00:31:35.16\00:31:38.73 the people are case managers see have mobility challenges. 00:31:38.73\00:31:41.40 So having a 88 a bathroom is really key. And then in the 00:31:41.40\00:31:45.97 back, there's actually a compartment that flips open. 00:31:45.97\00:31:50.27 We have 3 sinks that are accessible from the back. 00:31:50.27\00:31:53.17 So we think, you know, as people shave brush their teeth, 00:31:53.17\00:31:55.58 they don't you take up a bathroom, we can that can come 00:31:55.58\00:31:58.01 out free up that bout. We get some way to a quick, clever. 00:31:58.01\00:32:02.12 And so that was that was in jail 2024. And then we and that 00:32:02.12\00:32:08.29 the interesting thing about it and how God works is, 00:32:08.29\00:32:12.13 you know, as you increase your capacity, right, God just has 00:32:12.13\00:32:15.93 more room to to fill with with things he has you to do and and 00:32:15.93\00:32:21.44 blessings and all that. But in this case, right after that 00:32:21.44\00:32:25.17 ribbon, cutting those a shelter that reached out to us, they 00:32:25.17\00:32:27.44 said, hey, our bathrooms are down. We need a wee while the 00:32:27.44\00:32:31.98 women and children to not have access to a bathroom or showers 00:32:31.98\00:32:34.78 right now. Do you have a trailer that's available? 00:32:34.78\00:32:37.32 Literally after that ribbon cutting, we took that trailer 00:32:37.32\00:32:40.16 to go serve the women and children at that shot or snow 00:32:40.16\00:32:42.86 showers and bathrooms. And then we had the other ribbon cutting 00:32:42.86\00:32:47.40 that happened in February 2024. To and that's why they tell us 00:32:47.40\00:32:52.43 about the youth because this is something you said ages 16 to 00:32:52.43\00:32:56.04 24. You're seeing a high increase. Yes, ages 16 to 00:32:56.04\00:33:00.41 actually youth and young adult homelessness. 00:33:00.41\00:33:03.75 The highest concentration of youth and adult homelessness is 00:33:03.75\00:33:07.68 central. Florida's noted as one of those places with the 00:33:07.68\00:33:10.65 highest concentration and so the agents of 16 to 2016 to 24. 00:33:10.65\00:33:15.46 Yeah. What what is behind it? What is so, you know, trick or 00:33:15.46\00:33:21.46 a lot of it. We see a lot of people that were in foster care 00:33:21.46\00:33:25.37 when they turn 18. They don't have anywhere to go bomb people 00:33:25.37\00:33:30.04 that identify as LGBTQ+ the and up they family no longer wants 00:33:30.04\00:33:36.71 to care for them. They end up on the street. Even we have 16, 00:33:36.71\00:33:40.62 17 year-olds that are on the street looking first resources 00:33:40.62\00:33:43.59 by themselves. Sometimes it's it's really crazy. 00:33:43.59\00:33:47.69 So and then you have people were just the stuff. Family 00:33:47.69\00:33:50.39 just doesn't 00:33:50.39\00:33:51.79 doesn't really care about them too much. You know, and there's 00:33:51.79\00:33:54.83 cases where, you know, people might run away and stuff like 00:33:54.83\00:33:57.83 that. But a lot of the time it has to do with just not having 00:33:57.83\00:34:01.74 anyone in their life 00:34:01.74\00:34:03.71 that really cares and loves them and can support them, 00:34:03.71\00:34:07.51 you know, through challenges they might go through. 00:34:07.51\00:34:10.91 So that's yeah, it's sad. You know, we see a lot of that. 00:34:10.91\00:34:13.62 >> And a lot of them probably don't have any background, 00:34:13.62\00:34:17.02 spiritually background. Yeah, by 4. 00:34:17.02\00:34:20.19 >> The beloved dropped out of school and it just goes now. 00:34:20.19\00:34:23.96 Yeah. And no one thing that you haven't mentioned yet, which 00:34:23.96\00:34:27.36 which is part of it. How do you transport this? You've got to 00:34:27.36\00:34:30.50 have some type of a one-time pick, a person. Yeah, that we 00:34:30.50\00:34:34.20 get that question a lot. 00:34:34.20\00:34:36.30 >> So if we have to 50, you know, heavy duty Dooley. 00:34:36.30\00:34:41.18 Yeah, I'm you know, a duly truck that that will pull all 00:34:41.18\00:34:44.11 the trailers that we have. We we don't have to go into 00:34:44.11\00:34:46.75 solely to the 3.50 but to 50 with a duly. That's that's that 00:34:46.75\00:34:51.72 pretty much works out for us. Yeah, things. But they do get 00:34:51.72\00:34:54.79 heavy. They have to have the that the actually the youth 00:34:54.79\00:34:57.93 young adults trailer that we lost a February 2024. Is I 00:34:57.93\00:35:01.16 think a couple pictures of that. Yeah. Well, actually, 00:35:01.16\00:35:03.87 there's there's a video to week introducing the trailer a 00:35:03.87\00:35:07.00 little bit and the program, so will maybe go ahead and play 00:35:07.00\00:35:10.64 that and go to escape. 00:35:10.64\00:35:13.88 >> Well, a nonprofit called Salt Outreach is rolling out 00:35:13.88\00:35:17.25 new mobile showers for homeless. You sit is a part of 00:35:17.25\00:35:20.92 an 8.4 million dollar effort run by the Homeless Services 00:35:20.92\00:35:24.55 network of Central Florida. Simply Healthcare plans donated 00:35:24.55\00:35:28.89 $150,000 to cover the costs of the trailer and truck. We spoke 00:35:28.89\00:35:33.33 to a mental health expert who will be part of the efforts to 00:35:33.33\00:35:36.40 help young adults experiencing homelessness. 00:35:36.40\00:35:40.50 >> Early in my life, I felt like an outcast have done 00:35:40.50\00:35:42.77 prison ministry in the past 00:35:42.77\00:35:44.74 and I love helping people that society tends look the other 00:35:44.74\00:35:48.68 way. 00:35:48.68\00:35:49.98 >> Spectrum News Thirteen's Maria Serrano is joining us now 00:35:49.98\00:35:52.68 live in Sanford. Maria, it's the first time they were 00:35:52.68\00:35:55.58 actually able to get a closer look at these new mobile 00:35:55.58\00:35:58.19 showers. This will be in addition to the fleet that Salt 00:35:58.19\00:36:01.36 outreach already has. 00:36:01.36\00:36:04.69 >> That's right. And this trailer right here, it has 3 00:36:04.69\00:36:08.23 bathrooms with showers, a dryer and a washer in all. This is 00:36:08.23\00:36:12.27 specifically targeted to help youth experiencing 00:36:12.27\00:36:15.04 homelessness. 00:36:15.04\00:36:17.77 >> Being able to 00:36:17.77\00:36:20.41 I'm live on the streets. 00:36:20.41\00:36:22.54 He's been a very 00:36:22.54\00:36:25.38 influential experience in my life. 00:36:25.38\00:36:28.15 >> 24 year-old Charles de Guzman has been without a home 00:36:28.15\00:36:31.92 on and off for 4 years. That's for the 00:39:15.25\00:39:18.02 youth for the youth and the dog. Yeah, wonder from it's a 00:39:18.02\00:39:20.76 huge need, especially the youth today. I know, you know, 00:39:20.76\00:39:23.29 my wife's a mental health counselor and she she deals 00:39:23.29\00:39:25.99 with youth a lot. 00:39:25.99\00:39:28.00 And, you know, I think this generation, I mean, just having 00:39:28.00\00:39:31.77 more and more challenges when it comes to mental health and 00:39:31.77\00:39:35.00 anxiety depression, you know, things like that. It seems like 00:39:35.00\00:39:38.37 COVID triggered a lot of that now. 00:39:38.37\00:39:40.78 >> Yes, it definitely seems like after the pandemic, 00:39:40.78\00:39:43.65 there's just been an increase and a lot of these mental 00:39:43.65\00:39:47.02 health challenges that the at children, youth, young adults 00:39:47.02\00:39:50.55 are experiencing. And, you know, you can see it in the 00:39:50.55\00:39:53.49 statistics is just escalated tremendously. So teen suicide 00:39:53.49\00:39:59.63 is just amazing. Yes, yes, so it's wonderful that saw is able 00:39:59.63\00:40:03.90 to provide, you know, this huge need to be able to kind of me 00:40:03.90\00:40:07.70 also that those mental health needs it. 00:40:07.70\00:40:10.31 >> And I just want to say this before for kit is that what's 00:40:10.31\00:40:14.88 always amazes me about your program is the amount of local 00:40:14.88\00:40:19.41 news coverage because people are saying this and just go on. 00:40:19.41\00:40:24.62 >> This is unbelievable. I've never seen anything like 00:40:24.62\00:40:27.39 this. So do they have a phone number that they call to find 00:40:27.39\00:40:30.19 out for the first we're going to be located? Yeah, that work 00:40:30.19\00:40:34.10 so. 00:40:34.10\00:40:35.40 >> So, yeah, there are different locations that we 00:40:35.40\00:40:37.70 operate. And we kind of just determine based on where maybe 00:40:37.70\00:40:42.77 youth and adults might congregate morning leaving your 00:40:42.77\00:40:45.04 college or near certain certain locations of other 00:40:45.04\00:40:48.88 organizations that serve youth and adult homelessness. We 00:40:48.88\00:40:51.28 might set up there. And, yeah, I mean, I think with the news 00:40:51.28\00:40:54.62 media there, there is, I mean, at least 3 or 4 times a year, 00:40:54.62\00:40:59.02 the news will reach our have the reporters. I just have 00:40:59.02\00:41:01.66 their number, though, just I actually had a report coming 00:41:01.66\00:41:04.29 today. I'm asking if if he could hit, you know, talk more 00:41:04.29\00:41:07.96 about the program, but what we actually have some media out at 00:41:07.96\00:41:11.80 a ribbon cutting for this trailer. We have some pictures, 00:41:11.80\00:41:15.00 actually, of that of that ribbon cutting 00:41:15.00\00:41:17.97 that we have that that's a that was at the ribbon cutting. 00:41:17.97\00:41:21.14 We do a ceremony where we break in the trailers by being the 00:41:21.14\00:41:25.08 first people to shower in the trailer. So will actually, 00:41:25.08\00:41:28.42 you know, have a whole program will be one of the first 00:41:28.42\00:41:30.65 showers and we get some of our partners to be some of the 00:41:30.65\00:41:34.12 first showers in the trailer. And while that's why we're in 00:41:34.12\00:41:37.26 the trailer, showering will do like some trivia soaps, all 00:41:37.26\00:41:40.13 trivia and do some activities. We should have the community 00:41:40.13\00:41:43.53 out there and all that. But but, you know, it's it's it was 00:41:43.53\00:41:47.50 an amazing timing out to to to launch that trailer actually 00:41:47.50\00:41:51.17 right after we launched it. So 00:41:51.17\00:41:53.61 I mentioned that that shelter that had the bathrooms down for 00:41:53.61\00:41:56.71 the women and children. So right after this ribbon cut 00:41:56.71\00:42:00.95 him, there was so the day before this ribbon cutting, 00:42:00.95\00:42:04.99 that was a fire at a shelter nearby over 200 people, man at 00:42:04.99\00:42:10.46 the men shelter where we're again experiencing homelessness 00:42:10.46\00:42:14.10 because of this fire. Many a majority of them working 00:42:14.10\00:42:17.50 working. And they're not only working jobs, but, you know, 00:42:17.50\00:42:20.14 working toward getting to housing, you know. And so this 00:42:20.14\00:42:23.20 kind of put a whole ranch in that for them. So what they 00:42:23.20\00:42:26.91 ended up doing was the city found a church jam and got at 00:42:26.91\00:42:31.61 least 150 of the man in this jam. But the only way that the 00:42:31.61\00:42:36.48 church would allow it is if there were extra bathroom and 00:42:36.48\00:42:39.19 shower facilities because their facility can have a list of the 00:42:39.19\00:42:42.22 city call us up and they're like, hey, 00:42:42.22\00:42:44.39 we need you guys because, you know, and it was at 01:00PM, 00:42:44.39\00:42:46.90 the units there by 03:00PM. So so we we ended up just 00:42:46.90\00:42:51.43 taking our trailer right after the ribbon cutting right over 00:42:51.43\00:42:53.74 to this church a lot. And it may very well have God's always 00:42:53.74\00:42:57.14 one step. Yeah, right here. You know, here already knew. 00:42:57.14\00:43:00.51 And they, you know, God just kind of work that receive in 00:43:00.51\00:43:02.64 the days we lost these trailers. You know, it's yeah, 00:43:02.64\00:43:05.65 it's the spirit lead there. But but yeah, so so that we 00:43:05.65\00:43:10.02 actually have a video of what that shelter look like. That 00:43:10.02\00:43:12.59 temporary shelter after the fire and kuz shares a little 00:43:12.59\00:43:15.52 bit of that story. I 00:43:15.52\00:43:17.23 [MUSIC] 00:43:17.23\00:43:22.20 [MUSIC] 00:43:22.20\00:43:27.20 [MUSIC] 00:43:27.20\00:43:32.24 >> so you are a 501, C 3 ministry, which means they are 00:44:01.24\00:44:05.84 a nonprofit organization. You are Sporting Ministry, 00:44:05.84\00:44:09.74 the Adventist Church. You have 00:44:09.74\00:44:13.62 pastors and counselors tell us about the spiritual impact 00:44:13.62\00:44:19.15 they're having on the homeless community. 00:44:19.15\00:44:21.72 >> Yes, so the man, the pastors, you know, the reason 00:44:21.72\00:44:24.69 why we've been brought on pastors to this ministry and 00:44:24.69\00:44:27.50 and you know it, we wanted to make sure that the spiritual 00:44:27.50\00:44:30.90 after encompassed everything we did. And so they they literally 00:44:30.90\00:44:37.11 are full-time, just creating those relationships sharing 00:44:37.11\00:44:39.94 Christ with people. And, you know, we we have noticed, 00:44:39.94\00:44:45.01 I mean, they're just things ample of one pay. A lot of the 00:44:45.01\00:44:47.88 people we end up getting into housing. They start with our 00:44:47.88\00:44:50.15 spiritual care team, our 2 pastors. And so just one story 00:44:50.15\00:44:53.89 of a of one of our gas. And it was Richie. He came to us in 00:44:53.89\00:44:58.33 the middle of 2022, he was experiencing homelessness for 00:44:58.33\00:45:01.43 about 2 years since about like a little after the pandemic 00:45:01.43\00:45:04.10 started 00:45:04.10\00:45:05.27 and didn't have family and really cared about. And, 00:45:05.27\00:45:07.57 you know, but he he ended up hearing about Saudi came to our 00:45:07.57\00:45:10.91 property for services. 00:45:10.91\00:45:12.77 He got showers. You know, we've got some laundry, Don. He 00:45:12.77\00:45:15.84 started to sign the for mail service and handed up going to 00:45:15.84\00:45:18.85 our group. I will study the afternoon 00:45:18.85\00:45:21.18 and kept coming. He just kept coming and coming in. And 00:45:21.18\00:45:25.49 eventually he heat set, you know, South won the pastors 00:45:25.49\00:45:28.62 after we have some more questions, you know, and he's 00:45:28.62\00:45:31.39 like, actually, I remember him asking this question. One of 00:45:31.39\00:45:34.20 our pastors feels like so, you know, on the Sabbath, you know, 00:45:34.20\00:45:38.30 I just grabbed my Bible. I just sat by a tree. And I 00:45:38.30\00:45:40.47 just read and I'm studying there. Is that appropriate 00:45:40.47\00:45:43.10 thing to do on the side of her? Like, yeah, for sure, you know. 00:45:43.10\00:45:46.84 But but man, I'm guy was really late in his life and he ended 00:45:46.84\00:45:51.48 up starting to see a case manager. They got on the job 00:45:51.48\00:45:54.12 young adult. You know, young guy got a job started working 00:45:54.12\00:45:58.82 and he ended up moving into his new place 6 months after we 00:45:58.82\00:46:01.42 first met and then about a about a month and or so later. 00:46:01.42\00:46:07.30 Well, in between that time, our pastors state what, you know, 00:46:07.30\00:46:10.83 the housing retention also a big priority of them. They're 00:46:10.83\00:46:13.57 the visiting realize he was at French. All has an air 00:46:13.57\00:46:16.27 mattress, right? So they go and they appeal churches to get 00:46:16.27\00:46:19.51 donated furniture. They got a whole truckload of furniture 00:46:19.51\00:46:23.21 for him and they drive it over. And then, you know, probably 00:46:23.21\00:46:27.12 like about a month after his and housing, he Texans like you 00:46:27.12\00:46:30.99 won't believe it got permanent. My job, I got to be more of my 00:46:30.99\00:46:33.82 team. And then he now becomes a volunteer. It used to meet with 00:46:33.82\00:46:38.13 our pastors. But it's it's it's really like those kind of 00:46:38.13\00:46:41.36 moments, you know, are spiritual care team, a lot of 00:46:41.36\00:46:44.33 our guests to have some type of spiritual background. Many of 00:46:44.33\00:46:48.17 them, I would say over 3 fourths of our guests have to 00:46:48.17\00:46:50.97 have grown up with some kind of spiritual background. And it's 00:46:50.97\00:46:54.21 very difficult to process what they're going through through 00:46:54.21\00:46:57.18 spiritual lens. It's how do how do I you get those questions 00:46:57.18\00:47:01.25 got y y in my experience in that. And you know, why is this 00:47:01.25\00:47:04.85 happening to me? Why, you know, and so being able to they once 00:47:04.85\00:47:08.86 had a guy and they're just coming online right now. 00:47:08.86\00:47:11.43 But I remember one of our pastors had cast a cop came to 00:47:11.43\00:47:15.50 us for the first time super emotional. 00:47:15.50\00:47:19.10 I lost my brothers. I lost my parents. I lost my girlfriend. 00:47:19.10\00:47:23.57 I mean, it was like literally a job story. 00:47:23.57\00:47:27.44 And and our pastor, you know, he didn't you can't really say 00:47:27.44\00:47:31.38 anything without, you know, he just the crime literally cried 00:47:31.38\00:47:34.42 with them because he also just lost the small. And they just, 00:47:34.42\00:47:37.65 you know, they just cried together. But 00:47:37.65\00:47:39.69 you know that that 00:47:39.69\00:47:41.22 that's that's what's needed in these ministries, you know, 00:47:41.22\00:47:43.76 relationship is so keen on helping to end homelessness. 00:47:43.76\00:47:46.43 And so that's their emphasis, you know, and I'm sure a lot of 00:47:46.43\00:47:50.30 them have. 00:47:50.30\00:47:51.37 >> Many levels of grief that there have experience but 00:47:51.37\00:47:55.67 homelessness itself. 00:47:55.67\00:47:57.51 >> The screen on what I would imagine that their self esteem 00:47:57.51\00:48:00.51 is gone south with probably the loss or self esteem. Yeah, 00:48:00.51\00:48:03.71 I don't know. They have any value. Yeah. Yeah. I mean from 00:48:03.71\00:48:07.15 a spiritual aspect. Yes, you do? Yeah. I'm with God. Yeah. 00:48:07.15\00:48:10.89 >> Tell us. Tell us Johnny Story because we've got the 00:48:10.89\00:48:14.56 youth but you've also got a note to clients. Yeah. Yeah. 00:48:14.56\00:48:17.89 So Johnny, we have a picture of him. Actually. He he gave us 00:48:17.89\00:48:21.00 permission, shows picture. He was like. I want everyone to 00:48:21.00\00:48:23.87 know that if it wasn't for saw, I wouldn't be walking, you 00:48:23.87\00:48:26.63 know, and hate the he had. He actually asked us to take a 00:48:26.63\00:48:29.97 picture of him have is this is this picture. You know, he came 00:48:29.97\00:48:34.31 to us, you know, single father, his to 2 young boys and he was 00:48:34.31\00:48:40.15 experiencing homelessness. You know, he he had just lost 00:48:40.15\00:48:43.08 his leg and a 00:48:43.08\00:48:44.92 he didn't know what to do. You know, you can't it's hard 00:48:44.92\00:48:47.46 to find a job when you I mean, you're trying to adjust to that 00:48:47.46\00:48:50.66 and not being able to walk anymore. You're in a 00:48:50.66\00:48:52.49 wheelchair. And he didn't have a perceived this right, you 00:48:52.49\00:48:56.46 know. And and so though there was nothing there, no 00:48:56.46\00:48:59.13 prosthetic or anything like that. And so are, you know, 00:48:59.13\00:49:02.84 he start to come to us for for for services those basic 00:49:02.84\00:49:05.87 services. At first, we develop that relationship with him, 00:49:05.87\00:49:09.14 our spiritual care team. You know, his kids are his 00:49:09.14\00:49:11.91 children on the street with yes, wow, they were. Yes. 00:49:11.91\00:49:15.68 And we see that unfortunately, every week we see a new set of 00:49:15.68\00:49:18.79 kids on the street. It soon release that. And we do when it 00:49:18.79\00:49:22.42 comes to parents and kids and all that, we do everything we 00:49:22.42\00:49:25.29 can we go. I mean, there were times with the with this with 00:49:25.29\00:49:29.23 John and me. We our team is there to 8 o'clock 9 o'clock at 00:49:29.23\00:49:32.93 night, you know, trying to help him and and do what we can to 00:49:32.93\00:49:35.80 help. 00:49:35.80\00:49:36.91 You know, the shelters will will have spaces for single 00:49:36.91\00:49:40.44 moms with kids or I mean, moms with kids and and, you know, 00:49:40.44\00:49:44.51 for single man. But there aren't many spaces for single 00:49:44.51\00:49:48.22 fathers with kids. So you can. They can even be in a shelter 00:49:48.22\00:49:52.92 together, a lot of that high. So that was one of the 00:49:52.92\00:49:55.79 difficulties we face with ham. 00:49:55.79\00:49:58.06 And so, you know, we ended up our case management team, 00:49:58.06\00:50:01.13 all of our teams, really, they got together. They got him into 00:50:01.13\00:50:03.43 houses and housing. Now, you know, got them the resources he 00:50:03.43\00:50:06.84 needs. And we continue to see his kids will com, one of his 00:50:06.84\00:50:10.14 kids will calm like a every week or so and volunteer and be 00:50:10.14\00:50:13.48 a part of a salt and stuff and get back. But, you know, 00:50:13.48\00:50:17.88 we're continuing to just work with them. And the only taking 00:50:17.88\00:50:20.75 the church, you know, on the weekends and stuff like that 00:50:20.75\00:50:24.59 and his family. So so, yeah, it's it's it's really you know 00:50:24.59\00:50:29.59 what my wife and I were talking about. I'm just kind of the 00:50:29.59\00:50:33.26 miracles that what happened in Jesus Day, right. And 00:50:33.26\00:50:37.33 and in those miracles in with Ali would walk the right. 00:50:37.33\00:50:40.90 Those that were blind now had site. You know, we have guests 00:50:40.90\00:50:43.91 that we need to get glasses forks. They can't see a new 00:50:43.91\00:50:46.81 report it right. And then you see them with these glass after 00:50:46.81\00:50:49.18 years of not being able to see a RINO or whatever. You know, 00:50:49.18\00:50:54.78 there's just thought the whole the hopeless do have hope, 00:50:54.78\00:50:57.42 you know. And so it's just just an amazing thing to see kind of 00:50:57.42\00:51:03.99 comes to life today now. 00:51:03.99\00:51:05.89 >> You had mentioned that you wanted to tell Paula story in 00:51:05.89\00:51:08.63 this hour. What's what's special about Paula Story? 00:51:08.63\00:51:13.44 >> Paula, you know what? She exemplifies 00:51:13.44\00:51:17.81 one of the biggest populations were seen an increase of and 00:51:17.81\00:51:20.78 seniors, 60, 70, 80 year-old people that are, you know, 00:51:20.78\00:51:26.85 experiencing homelessness because our fixed income, 00:51:26.85\00:51:29.05 the rent goes up $300 600. And they can't afford that. 00:51:29.05\00:51:33.46 That kind of increase, you know, and so with rank going up 00:51:33.46\00:51:37.49 so much and are in central Florida. I mean, we just we had 00:51:37.49\00:51:40.30 a I mean, just you know, before the video with Paula and when 00:51:40.30\00:51:45.53 she could share a little bit of her experience pup, we had a 71 00:51:45.53\00:51:49.00 year-old woman that came to us experiencing homelessness for 00:51:49.00\00:51:51.27 the first time with her dog. Didn't know what to do. I mean, 00:51:51.27\00:51:54.71 we you know, she was overheating from the heat 00:51:54.71\00:51:56.85 outside. We brought her inside and, 00:51:56.85\00:51:59.45 you know, and just tried to do everything we could to get her 00:51:59.45\00:52:02.85 somewhere. But unfortunately, we're seeing a lot of that. 00:52:02.85\00:52:05.79 And and 00:52:05.79\00:52:07.02 >> Paul is one of those people. Let's roll that video so we can 00:52:07.02\00:52:09.99 keep that in the first hour. 00:52:09.99\00:52:11.89 >> Well, after Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we now have 00:52:11.89\00:52:15.73 giving Tuesday and this is a DOT day really designed to 00:52:15.73\00:52:18.80 focus on spending. 00:52:18.80\00:52:21.04 >> On donations to charitable organizations. Last year, 00:52:21.04\00:52:24.34 though, Americans gave less than a year before giving us a 00:52:24.34\00:52:27.74 report that giving dropped 10.5% last year. It was only 00:52:27.74\00:52:32.88 the 4th time in 40 years of charitable giving didn't 00:52:32.88\00:52:36.25 increase year to year. 00:52:36.25\00:52:37.72 >> Spectrum News 13, Jeff Allen. He is joining us live 00:52:37.72\00:52:40.56 tonight from downtown Orlando. So Jeff, the head of a local 00:52:40.56\00:52:43.69 nonprofit he spoke with, 00:52:43.69\00:52:45.53 they say the drop in giving is really coming at a pretty bad 00:52:45.53\00:52:49.56 time when they're seeing more request for help. 00:52:49.56\00:52:53.03 [MUSIC] 00:52:53.03\00:52:55.27 >> The founder of service and Love Together or Salt Outreach 00:52:55.27\00:52:58.71 says on one hand, they're seeing those fewer donations. 00:52:58.71\00:53:02.51 And then they're also getting a higher demand from people who 00:53:02.51\00:53:05.18 are really having trouble keeping an affordable place to 00:53:05.18\00:53:08.18 live many of them homeless. So he's hoping giving Tuesday 00:53:08.18\00:53:11.89 will give them the financial boost they need. 00:53:11.89\00:53:14.69 Yeah. Just Paul and Johnson says after her landlord evicted 00:53:14.69\00:53:17.99 her leaving her homeless, she had no family to turn to. 00:53:17.99\00:53:21.46 She says are close is relative. Her brother was killed in a car 00:53:21.46\00:53:24.97 crash. 00:53:24.97\00:53:26.53 >> I don't feel like I would bet on the street if you 00:53:26.53\00:53:29.60 certain of it, I would go inside. 00:53:29.60\00:53:32.01 >> To take my shower. Johnson spent the last 5 months part of 00:53:32.01\00:53:35.68 that during the sweltering hot summer living on the streets of 00:53:35.68\00:53:38.68 Orlando. She says she's never liked asking for help that she 00:53:38.68\00:53:42.38 eventually sought help from Salt outreach which gave her a 00:53:42.38\00:53:45.39 place to shower, do laundry and just recently helped her find a 00:53:45.39\00:53:49.06 new home. I would word. 00:53:49.06\00:53:50.73 >> Think about my parents. They would tell me, you know, 00:53:50.73\00:53:53.19 you have to answer. Yes. 00:53:53.19\00:53:55.30 Don't be ashamed to ask for help there. 00:53:55.30\00:53:58.30 >> That's what I would do. I mean, I would break down and 00:53:58.30\00:54:01.90 down 00:54:01.90\00:54:03.41 say, I need you guys and help a neighbor right matters. I mean, 00:54:03.41\00:54:07.11 big-time write letters. 00:54:07.11\00:54:08.64 >> But salt is now in need of some of its own help. Founder 00:54:08.64\00:54:11.88 Erik Amarillo says this past year, they've seen an increase 00:54:11.88\00:54:15.52 in people seeking their services to centre rise and 00:54:15.52\00:54:18.29 seniors are rising young adults and youth. 00:54:18.29\00:54:20.96 >> We've seen a rise in single moms. They just can't keep up 00:54:20.96\00:54:24.26 with the rising cost of living the rising cost of rent. 00:54:24.26\00:54:26.76 >> The camera low says they're not bringing in as much money 00:54:26.76\00:54:29.56 to meet the needs of people have less. 00:54:29.56\00:54:32.10 >> Disposable income or income that they are a lot into 00:54:32.10\00:54:35.64 giving. And and we're seeing that. And and when with 00:54:35.64\00:54:39.61 increased demand for our services, 00:54:39.61\00:54:42.08 you know, we it's it's hard to keep up. 00:54:42.08\00:54:45.75 >> Camera low says due to the financial crimes, they've had 00:54:45.75\00:54:48.42 to reduce their service time by one hour each day, making it 00:54:48.42\00:54:51.95 harder to serve as many people like Johnson. But they're 00:54:51.95\00:54:54.99 hoping the decrease in donations won't last thanks to 00:54:54.99\00:54:58.59 solid outreach. Johnson says for the first time in a long 00:54:58.59\00:55:01.60 time she's thankful to have a place to call home. I pay you 00:55:01.60\00:55:05.40 what I looked up to the Lord. I said Thank you, Lord. 00:55:05.40\00:55:09.40 [MUSIC] 00:55:09.40\00:55:12.97 >> And Salt founder tells me that because he's a smaller non 00:55:12.97\00:55:16.48 profit. He really doesn't have the budget to do a yearlong 00:55:16.48\00:55:19.01 fundraising campaign like maybe like some bigger a nonprofit 00:55:19.01\00:55:22.15 organization. So he says that makes tomorrow giving Tuesday. 00:55:22.15\00:55:25.75 All the more important is hoping it will help him get 00:55:25.75\00:55:28.36 back on better financial footing with hopefully more 00:55:28.36\00:55:31.33 donations is helping reporting live in downtown Orlando. 00:55:31.33\00:55:34.30 Jeff Allen Spectrum News. 00:55:34.30\00:55:36.77 >> They may allow, you know, this is something that we don't 00:55:36.77\00:55:39.70 often speak up, but it seems that a lot of seniors, we 00:55:39.70\00:55:45.61 we're in that group, AARP members, and we get the we get 00:55:45.61\00:55:50.85 that frequently. They're sending out that seniors are 00:55:50.85\00:55:54.45 becoming the new poverty stricken in population and 00:55:54.45\00:55:58.79 cause of rent increases. But you had I had really taken 00:55:58.79\00:56:03.43 it to that point of thinking of them is losing their homes from 00:56:03.43\00:56:07.23 being homeless in this. You know what we've done this hour. 00:56:07.23\00:56:11.70 We let you see how salt has expanded. They've always had a 00:56:11.70\00:56:18.01 vision from God. 00:56:18.01\00:56:19.84 And I'll tell you what, God keeps expanding their vision. 00:56:19.84\00:56:24.71 But what was going to do in the next hour and help if you know 00:56:24.71\00:56:29.75 anyone that has heart and we should all have a heart to help 00:56:29.75\00:56:35.19 the homeless column now and say, hey, you know, you're 00:56:35.19\00:56:38.83 Feeding Ministry, you can connect with soap. You can 00:56:38.83\00:56:42.93 invite salt come out. And and so its meetings will explain at 00:56:42.93\00:56:48.34 all in the second. Now you can have them. They've got their 00:56:48.34\00:56:52.64 ministry model that can be duplicated anywhere in the 00:56:52.64\00:56:57.18 United States, not just in the United States. They're actually 00:56:57.18\00:57:00.35 getting phone calls and contacts from people in other 00:57:00.35\00:57:04.12 countries because this is something it's a service that 00:57:04.12\00:57:10.39 is modeling the way she's met, the needs of the people and in 00:57:10.39\00:57:16.16 men or stewed to them in a relation now. Way 00:57:16.16\00:57:21.80 one-on-one. It too beautiful ministry. And we want you to 00:57:21.80\00:57:26.14 stay tuned because we've got some exciting updates to talk 00:57:26.14\00:57:31.15 about on the other side of this hour or so.
