Then you can do more for but activating 00:04:09.21\00:04:16.79 your immune system and your recovery system, your body, then all the doctors in no way 00:04:16.79\00:04:24.43 come by. So when we say we're partners in crime, we're in good, clean crime. 00:04:54.59\00:04:58.36 Getting preventing prevented it is better than trying to diagnose it and try to get rid 00:04:58.36\00:05:03.77 of it. It's always better to prevent and to repair the fortunate we can now begin to 00:05:03.77\00:05:09.50 do something about arresting the disease, these chronic diseases 00:05:09.50\00:05:14.41 and actually reversing them, heating them, providing curative aspects to OK, a concept called 00:05:14.41\00:05:20.58 lifestyle medicine, OK, well, that could happen. And if 00:07:41.62\00:07:47.60 the dose, if the therapeutic doses efficacious for treatment reversal, then prevention is 00:07:47.60\00:07:52.80 the natural byproduct. So it's considered by many to be the fastest growing medical 00:07:52.80\00:07:56.77 professional association in the United States. And last time you were here, you really challenge me to get my more bq potential. One. 00:08:27.37\00:08:34.84 apple pie said he didn't Apple. Instead, it's not a real potato, not the potato chips. working on 00:08:34.84\00:08:41.48 it. >> You work a I reminds me every now and you know, this whole thing is not about 00:08:41.48\00:08:47.42 perfection anyway, OK? It what you call interventional are preventative medicine. Am 00:09:55.89\00:10:04.73 I am I getting close? Yeah. If you are, you know, we're talking 00:10:04.73\00:10:07.97 really about intelligence self care. It comes to us through education. Yes, intensive 00:10:07.97\00:10:16.58 education like you, the chip program. 35 hours of education. Once people understand this, 00:10:16.58\00:10:22.95 it's much easier to begin to make some of the change us and turn them into habits because 00:10:22.95\00:10:29.69 its habits that determine health habits to determine our disease habits is really key 00:10:29.69\00:10:38.60 behavior change. Got on the spiritual plan. How habits determine, uh, you know, 00:10:38.60\00:10:44.71 action determine habit happen, determine carriage that carried to term a destiny that 00:10:44.71\00:10:48.64 so you're talking about that same thing along the same line of the plan of health. But 00:10:48.64\00:10:53.25 before we dive into this informative program, let me remind you invite someone to 00:10:53.25\00:10:55.52 watch the program with you. If you're driving, turn the volume up on in may not be 00:10:55.52\00:10:59.65 able to hit record in the car, but if you have a way this program will be shown again. 00:10:59.65\00:11:04.69 But I think you should encourage your friends and family members. 00:11:04.69\00:11:09.16 There may be someone in your home that may be struggling with an illness. Yeah, this program 00:11:09.16\00:11:12.90 could reveal to them something educational, some decision that they can make to begin to 00:11:12.90\00:11:18.97 move their lives in the right direction. Or as the books as if they're going the wrong 00:11:18.97\00:11:21.44 direction, you to turn. I have a nephew. He's only 37 years old and has diabetes and high 00:11:21.44\00:11:32.25 blood I'm going to take on books. When I go to Florida for 00:11:32.25\00:11:39.63 my nephew. >> So diabetes at 37 years old that sealed his oh, yes, it can be reversed, though. 00:11:39.63\00:11:42.90 What kind would that be considered? What kind of diabetes within? Well, as you 00:11:42.90\00:11:49.57 see, onset diabetes for type 2 diabetes. That's the most common. >> Diabetes that we 00:11:49.57\00:11:54.78 representing, about 90% of all We can turn this off within weeks just help people 00:11:54.78\00:12:02.05 understand that they have the power making some dietary changes getting exercise 00:12:02.05\00:12:09.49 programs I offered losing some weight and that makes all the 00:12:09.49\00:12:14.20 difference. >> Wow. And if I may add long before there was COVID-19, we have been talking 00:12:14.20\00:12:21.00 about the looming global pandemic of type 2 and it's true that you can no longer even 00:12:21.00\00:12:27.34 refer to type 2 diabetes as adult onset because so many children are now being diagnosed 00:12:27.34\00:12:33.35 with this degenerative condition. It really is. It is something that others such 00:12:33.35\00:12:39.15 urgency for us to address it. But the good news is is that it is a dietary related. Yeah, a 00:12:39.15\00:12:46.06 degenerative condition. And so not only is it preventable, but often treatable. And if 00:12:46.06\00:12:51.93 caught early enough reversible through the power of food is medicine and lifestyle 00:12:51.93\00:12:57.97 medicine. >> Just imagine diabetes has tripled in the last 00:12:57.97\00:13:04.05 30 years. It's a becoming a pandemic and its own. Now try right every it. First. Every. 00:13:04.05\00:13:12.89 Baby born out of 3, one out of 3, but become a diabetic in a lifetime If the trends 00:13:12.89\00:13:18.03 continue the So the interruption of the trend is what this 00:13:18.03\00:13:24.70 program is about. Correct. And then, of course, you have to worry about cancer. Breast 00:13:24.70\00:13:27.87 cancer rates. The incidence rates have gone up dramatically. The 50, 60 years. We have seen 00:13:27.87\00:13:34.81 heart disease not really declining very much either. And then you have to worry about 00:13:34.81\00:13:39.05 excess weight. You know, I mean, you know it today, only one out of 4 adults in America are 00:13:39.05\00:13:46.12 actually regular normal weight. out of 4 people all regular way. 00:13:46.12\00:13:50.49 That means 3 out of 4 Americans are either. >> Overweight or obese. Something has happened to 00:13:50.49\00:13:55.26 them. It all started in the 1970's. But on diet began to change. Like you mentioned, 00:13:55.26\00:14:00.57 people shift if and potatoes. attempts we shifted from water to soda pops. See this with 00:14:00.57\00:14:11.21 the changes that took place. But we no longer eat food, but we know it industrialize and 00:14:11.21\00:14:17.29 there may for taste for convenience that made for profit. That's why many years 00:14:17.29\00:14:24.29 ago there was a commercial. The I will mention that the chip, but the commercial Hoke 00:14:24.29\00:14:29.30 was I bet you but you can see just one child that you can eat. Just one. And these are 00:14:29.30\00:14:37.54 things that are orchestrated and and doctored up in a factory so 00:14:37.54\00:14:42.21 that you can teach us one. Yeah, you see this where the foods that we use to rely on into the 00:14:42.21\00:14:50.49 1970's and everything began to change gradually. And then we developed engine neared foods, 00:14:50.49\00:14:55.72 taste sensations, difficult to resist almost addictive seat. And so that's why I think we 00:14:55.72\00:15:03.10 see today a in crease in these chronic diseases. And that's why 00:15:03.10\00:15:09.67 we feel we need do something about. Wow. Wow. Well, let's first of all, lay some 00:15:09.67\00:15:14.24 foundations. I think that all of us week, you know, we all travel. We begin to look at the 00:15:14.24\00:15:18.75 world and it has its metamorphosis ising. You made a very powerful point. How things 00:15:18.75\00:15:22.82 are becoming more and more prevalent among younger and younger children. When we grew 00:15:22.82\00:15:29.26 up, we were outside playing and jumping role not That's right. You know, we we breathed outside 00:15:29.26\00:15:35.43 today. primarily quiet. >> Because children are held hostage by Yeah. And they're 00:15:35.43\00:15:41.34 becoming obese couch potatoes before they have a double digit in their age. So let's 00:15:41.34\00:15:45.34 talk about some of this. Why is our nation and our world being. I love the word facing 00:15:45.34\00:15:53.52 a chronic pandemic of unhealthy lifestyles? Well, I think you'd 00:15:53.52\00:15:59.25 be probably talking about some of these major factors rate. Yes, one of the 6 factors that 00:15:59.25\00:16:04.59 you always seem to emphasize. It's such an elegant educational way. Yeah, the American 00:16:04.59\00:16:12.93 culture. That's what we really we really focus on the 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine, 00:16:12.93\00:16:17.24 lifestyle, medicine is conventional medicine. It's all 00:16:17.24\00:16:22.54 evidence based. >> And it's really about shifting to a first treatment approach that attempts 00:16:22.54\00:16:28.55 to identify and eradicate the root cause of disease. Before 00:16:28.55\00:16:33.49 then shifting to pharmaceuticals and and those 6 pillars are a whole food plant. Predominant 00:16:33.49\00:16:38.96 dietary lifestyle, regular physical activity. So something like this? Oh, absolutely 00:16:38.96\00:16:43.87 anything that grows from the ground and is close to nature's packages possible because those 00:16:43.87\00:16:49.60 are the foods that are fiber filled in nutrient dense and accident. Rich, you know, those 00:16:49.60\00:16:54.54 are the foods that will protect health and fight disease and it's only the foods that grow 00:16:54.54\00:16:59.81 from the ground there fiber filled. And so that's why we always speak to the fact that 00:16:59.81\00:17:04.02 while all 6 pillars of lifestyle medicine are very, very important, foundational to 00:17:04.02\00:17:07.72 health food, does Trump all? But to your point physical activity so important and we 00:17:07.72\00:17:14.66 have really evolved ins into such a sedentary population and then stress management and 00:17:14.66\00:17:21.50 restorative sleep. The avoidance of risky substances and then the 00:17:21.50\00:17:27.68 power of positive social connection and our lives and purpose. And so those are really 00:17:27.68\00:17:32.55 the 6 pillars that are foundational to optimal health or lack thereof. But as this 00:17:32.55\00:17:37.72 beautiful plate food represents it, is that it really we are overfed. Yes, undernourished 00:17:37.72\00:17:46.83 again. Fiber deficient. Nutrient starved and we've been reaping the consequence of that. But 00:17:46.83\00:17:52.00 the good news is, is that even though nearly 90% of all dollars spent on health care 00:17:52.00\00:17:59.17 in the United States. And certainly in many parts of the world are paying for the 00:17:59.17\00:18:04.65 treatment of conditions rooted in poor lifestyle choices. And that's good news because it 00:18:04.65\00:18:09.95 means we can do something about it before it's too late. And that's why this is such a 00:18:09.95\00:18:15.56 wake-up call. And I think why we're seeing such tremendous growth and the American 00:18:15.56\00:18:19.66 College of Lifestyle Medicine in the field and interest from the public as well. So when 00:18:19.66\00:18:25.30 you're talking about treating the conditions are the symptoms, 00:18:25.30\00:18:29.67 right? It talking about to patching up. >> The symptoms that people make people feel 00:18:29.67\00:18:34.48 better without necessarily attacking the cause is right. >> Well, when you even look at 00:18:34.48\00:18:39.98 type 2 diabetes, which, you know, the point that you made Hines, now the trends show 00:18:39.98\00:18:44.72 that every child born in 2000 or thereafter. You know, one in 3 will become diabetic. 00:18:44.72\00:18:51.63 Only 6% of our U.S. population is considered metabolic Lee healthy. If this 6%, is 00:18:51.63\00:18:58.10 metabolically healthy in the U.S. very true in many parts of the world. And so when we 00:18:58.10\00:19:05.04 look at health care spending in the U.S., for example, we spend 2.3 times more on health 00:19:05.04\00:19:12.81 care for someone with type 2 diabetes and yet those ever-increasing quantities of 00:19:12.81\00:19:19.25 medications don't cure the disease yet. Lifestyle medicine intervention can not 00:19:19.25\00:19:26.06 only halt the progression, but often times can reverse the disease. So that's why it's so 00:19:26.06\00:19:33.94 so incredibly important that we chef our whole health care system really shift our 00:19:33.94\00:19:39.94 current disease and disability care system. And the one focus truly on health care. 00:19:39.94\00:19:46.38 >> Yeah. Let me sort of reinforce that to hear, you know, the person in America 00:19:46.38\00:19:55.09 Spence $13,500 a year for medical care. On average. As a benefit, families can no 00:19:55.09\00:20:04.43 longer sustain this. As a matter of fact, companies. The number one cause of bankruptcy 00:20:04.43\00:20:11.87 in America today as medical cost of the employees and the medical cause of the owners. 00:20:11.87\00:20:18.25 And, you know, that is a very powerful point. Talk about our insurance and what they're 00:20:18.25\00:20:22.58 encouraging us to do. Well, caught passes without Give us. What do they give you Well, 00:20:22.58\00:20:29.22 that they want you to walk to 10,000 steps, matter of fact, if you don't do these required 00:20:29.22\00:20:35.20 exercise, the fuel required lifestyle. You don't get enjoy, get insurance. They 00:20:35.20\00:20:41.04 said we insurance can be counted because you haven't you. We're 00:20:41.04\00:20:43.67 noticing that you're not walk. Cannot. And trackable and these are legitimate. You can just 00:20:43.67\00:20:51.98 write and I walk 5 steps 10,000 steps. They said make sure you have a device right now 00:20:51.98\00:20:57.45 actually in the truck and we could keep her. And then nowadays with the phones, your 00:20:57.45\00:21:01.12 phone right away keeps a consistent record of how many miles he I remember not too 00:21:01.12\00:21:05.89 long ago. I was in Las Vegas for tech tech show. And I decided I was going to go. It 00:21:05.89\00:21:13.20 was a beautiful sunny evening and I decided I'm going just going walk back to the hotel 00:21:13.20\00:21:16.60 from the Las Vegas Convention Center with us all kuz attacks and many of our guys. 53 again 00:21:16.60\00:21:20.81 Lent. I have no And I finished the evening. They said you walked 13 miles today. I felt 00:21:20.81\00:21:32.59 that the next has like when I >> I have muscles. I didn't even know. Haha, thank the 00:21:32.59\00:21:40.03 Lord I had on my Murphy sugars, which are very, very comfortable 00:21:40.03\00:21:44.93 on design for good walking because it so much to see on that as you're walking back to 00:21:44.93\00:21:47.94 the hotel was distracting. But that's what we're talking about it. But I my body responded to 00:21:47.94\00:21:54.68 and I felt really, really the comeback butts. So I want to add one more thing that you 00:21:54.68\00:21:58.58 talked about here when you speaking to talk about how sometimes 90% of costs go to. 00:21:58.58\00:22:04.89 Go to an area of medicine that could be prevented. >> Absolutely not. Only 00:22:04.89\00:22:12.46 prevented, but often treated and potentially even reversed. We see that. And I mean, the 00:22:12.46\00:22:20.20 evidence is overwhelming in support of this. And so that gives us hope, you know, is we 00:22:20.20\00:22:26.34 as a nation teeter on the brink of health care costs and use bankruptcy again, that is 00:22:26.34\00:22:30.45 that's a good news to cystic in it. 80%, nearly 80% of all chronic disease is tied to our 00:22:30.45\00:22:38.89 lifestyle choices. What we eat, how we move, how we think. and 00:22:38.89\00:22:43.99 then nearly 90% of those dollars being spent on health care. And it isn't just United States. I 00:22:43.99\00:22:48.53 mean, when we look at the Middle East, for example, just an incredibly high levels of 00:22:48.53\00:22:54.40 chronic disease and obesity and so it isn't just it. This is a global problem because we have 00:22:54.40\00:23:01.61 export ID. The standard American diet the food manufacturers have capitalized on And as Michael 00:23:01.61\00:23:07.85 Pollan said, you walk into any grocery store and 80% of what's there is an edible food 00:23:07.85\00:23:13.42 like substance and not really food as God designed. So we must shift. Yeah, we are 00:23:13.42\00:23:22.33 consuming in products. >> Rather than foods has grown. And, you 00:23:22.33\00:23:29.77 know, I think the company that is giving up paying turn to your paycheck or you're working for 00:23:29.77\00:23:35.98 it. The doing the right thing making the employment subjected to becoming more aware of the 00:23:35.98\00:23:45.19 things that you need to do in terms of your personal lifestyle. That is, I think 00:23:45.19\00:23:49.52 the future and corporations in America are beginning to realize this. And this is not 00:23:49.52\00:23:54.73 just an exceptional case. That's basically what you find every 00:23:54.73\00:24:01.34 day. Isn't it? Corporations are interested? Oh, absolutely. Because. >> When we look at in 00:24:01.34\00:24:06.84 in the in the United States who's paying for health care and for whom is their immense profit 00:24:06.84\00:24:12.98 and optimal health. And that's what's really, really important. 00:24:12.98\00:24:17.75 And it's self-funded employers. So many employers, if they have at least 1000 employees or more 00:24:17.75\00:24:23.16 will be self funded. Yes, and they're responsible for covering those costs. really 00:24:23.16\00:24:28.53 when we step back and you know, I off as a Christian, even though the American 00:24:28.53\00:24:31.57 College of Lifestyle Medicine is a secular medical professional 00:24:31.57\00:24:35.27 association. I'm a person of faith. And I often say that our fiercest enemy could not have 00:24:35.27\00:24:42.08 designed a more insidious destructive force because when you look at our health care 00:24:42.08\00:24:47.92 system, there's just immense profit in disease. There isn't profit an optimal health. So the 00:24:47.92\00:24:56.06 system is very much designed to, you know, diagnose the L prescribe the pill and send the 00:24:56.06\00:25:04.87 patient home with the bill. As I quote And I love I'm quoting Honesdale there, too. 00:25:04.87\00:25:09.77 >> Diagnose the L okay. Prescribe the pill and send the patient home with the bill 00:25:09.77\00:25:14.11 and law 7 minutes. >> The other 7 minutes you have to use as a 00:25:14.11\00:25:18.65 physician to enter everything on your computer. That's I mean, that's what can you do 15 00:25:18.65\00:25:24.69 minutes So the airlines to delay medicine concept is trying to provide people with 00:25:24.69\00:25:30.23 2030, 40 ares on education and delivering it. Ideally in groups because you have been 00:25:30.23\00:25:37.53 social support. It's much more fun doing things together. When you change as a group 00:25:37.53\00:25:40.90 rate than alone. And so this brings me then to the issue that you just raced, Susan, 00:25:40.90\00:25:47.98 you mention to medical economics? Yes, I mean, why isn't? The society was the 00:25:47.98\00:25:59.22 culture promoting more fully these concepts off lifestyle medicine. But why is there 00:25:59.22\00:26:06.03 such a hindrance to what these concepts? You know, we, for instance, have published some 00:26:06.03\00:26:12.30 50 scientific papers on the efficacy of the less than most and approach too. These kind 00:26:12.30\00:26:16.44 of chronic diseases. Why do we embrace it I can tell you why. Well, Tommy, because it 00:26:16.44\00:26:22.84 doesn't match my bottom line. Profits. >> see if I could, if I 00:26:22.84\00:26:26.58 could give you a bill. Diagnosed. Hill and they give you the bill and I could make 00:26:26.58\00:26:34.59 sure that OK, if I could see 37 patients today, my profits this month will be better than 00:26:34.59\00:26:39.16 my profits last month. I don't have to educate you. I could keep you as I could keep us a 00:26:39.16\00:26:45.47 chronic patient because you have to keep coming back to me. I haven't really resolved 00:26:45.47\00:26:49.67 to issue what do. You create a dependency. That is right. You become I hate to say this uses 00:26:49.67\00:26:55.18 you become drug dealer rather than person who is concerned about my well-being. And that 00:26:55.18\00:27:02.15 unfortunately, I want to sound I want you know, label the whole medical feel that way. 00:27:02.15\00:27:06.12 But as I said in the very beginning of the program, you need to go on vacation rather 00:27:06.12\00:27:10.06 than sending your physician patient think about that. I just 00:27:10.06\00:27:15.00 want to remind our audience. But at the same time, you know, you came on pretty harshly there on 00:27:15.00\00:27:21.20 the medical profession. understand. And I the fairness and perhaps some of the 00:27:21.20\00:27:29.81 justification that often is. Appropriate validated but too much more than that milk a 00:27:29.81\00:27:36.08 week about this. If we would adopt a diet or a program, for instance, that looks at foods 00:27:36.08\00:27:44.36 has grown, right, You would not have the meat industry to be a friend they would not 00:27:44.36\00:27:49.30 support lies to medicine when you can actually get people off his medication, they would 00:27:49.30\00:27:55.54 you would not have the egg industry what they star Rich egg yolks to be really pushing 00:27:55.54\00:28:00.58 your program, would you you would not have the CE the soda pop industry really pushing 00:28:00.58\00:28:06.55 your lifetime. But it's a concept and really recommend drinking water, right? Man, 00:28:06.55\00:28:12.65 you see of all these hindrances and then you have these a truck 00:28:12.65\00:28:17.09 processed for it's the in effect, run for the engineer at Fort the taste sensations. You 00:28:17.09\00:28:22.33 almost feel like you are getting addicted to them. like you said, there's have times situations 00:28:22.33\00:28:26.80 where you cannot just eat one chip great. You know, really, honestly, you really can't 00:28:26.80\00:28:31.74 win. You just there's something about the way that the engineer 00:28:31.74\00:28:36.11 it and that's the proper term. Let me remind a honey, remind our viewers about write a free 00:28:36.11\00:28:42.45 offer. Right here is called you turned. And I remember in my neighborhood back in 70's in Brooklyn, the open of 00:29:21.56\00:29:26.26 McDonnell's. And everybody was so excited. McDonnell's. I was so excited with them. And that 00:29:26.26\00:29:34.80 was one of the worst things that happen to a neighborhood is when they open McDonald's 00:29:34.80\00:29:39.61 matter of fact, take a little stroll cast briefly. I remember being in Paris when 00:29:39.61\00:29:46.58 they were recommending a McDonald's and the people because they said that lunch 00:29:46.58\00:29:51.05 time they take 2 hours for lunch. They actually go home and cook their food. And one 00:29:51.05\00:29:58.49 of the instances I remember what this years ago through the 80's to qualify this. I'm 00:29:58.49\00:30:04.10 with Harry dissing would Harrison's and they said it's not unusual for cab driver to 00:30:04.10\00:30:08.67 pull over when his lunch hour hits in the lunch hour for the whole. If I take a look the 00:30:08.67\00:30:12.04 same time and one of the pastor says, what are you doing this? 00:30:12.04\00:30:15.11 This is my lunch hour. have to wait to my lunch hour. If I take you the rest the time they cook 00:30:15.11\00:30:20.68 their foods, they literally cook their food. But now we know as you talked about, we have 00:30:20.68\00:30:25.19 exploited disease in the context of Nast fast foods. So what makes lifestyle medicine? 00:30:25.19\00:30:38.67 Well, first, it certainly reignite the passion. >> You are 00:30:38.67\00:30:43.57 why most went into the field of medicine to become true healers. And so that, again, is why we're 00:30:43.57\00:30:50.45 seeing such tremendous growth in the field and of the American College of Lifestyle, 00:30:50.45\00:30:54.92 Medicine and of the lifestyle Medicine associations around the world because it enables 00:30:54.92\00:31:01.86 that medical professional to treat the root cause to attempt to identify, identify 00:31:01.86\00:31:07.73 and eradicate the root cause with the clinical outcome call of health restoration as 00:31:07.73\00:31:14.37 opposed to simply disease management team. and because it 00:31:14.37\00:31:21.51 is evidence based conventional medicine, all that, you know, we're just advocating that it 00:31:21.51\00:31:26.48 become the first treatment option that lifestyle medicine become the foundation of health 00:31:26.48\00:31:32.65 and all health care. and I think that we're just seeing. Physicians and medical 00:31:32.65\00:31:40.06 professionals who, as you referred to earlier, meeting to see, you know, 25 30 40 patients 00:31:40.06\00:31:47.00 a day and it's just unsustainable. And so they are looking for a different way. And 00:31:47.00\00:31:51.21 I think that the public is rising up saying, wait a minute, we don't want to just manage 00:31:51.21\00:31:57.15 disease. We really want to have our health restored. We want to add years to life and 00:31:57.15\00:32:00.52 life 2 years and the medical community is and and we're seeing such incredible things 00:32:00.52\00:32:07.69 happen. I mean, even on the national stage just yesterday, the American College of 00:32:07.69\00:32:12.46 Lifestyle Medicine submitted its recommendations and of pretty significant offer. And 00:32:12.46\00:32:17.30 in response to the White House conference on hunger, nutrition and health. And for 00:32:17.30\00:32:24.71 the first time in over 50 one is being produced on Capitol Hill this this September. And 00:32:24.71\00:32:33.28 so food is medicine is something that is in the vernacular and 00:32:33.28\00:32:37.22 being talked about just a few weeks ago. Congressman Jim McGovern and Congressman Burgess 00:32:37.22\00:32:44.09 out of Texas Co sponsored a House resolution that was unanimously adopted by the 00:32:44.09\00:32:51.87 House of Representatives. That advocates for nutrition to be incorporated into medical 00:32:51.87\00:32:57.21 education throughout the country. Now it isn't anything that it doesn't have any teeth 00:32:57.21\00:33:03.38 to it. It's a resolution, but it enables organizations like ours to come behind and do 00:33:03.38\00:33:09.65 things that really help to manifest that vision. And our president was in Washington, 00:33:09.65\00:33:16.79 D.C., today meeting with Congressman McGovern and and others on Capitol Hill. 00:33:16.79\00:33:21.73 >> The president of the American College yes, you know, we have 00:33:21.73\00:33:25.93 to also recognize a data when you are facing something brand new, there's always resistance. 00:33:25.93\00:33:32.87 True. No, we're trying to reach physicians right? But unless they have come through 00:33:32.87\00:33:37.68 the program and begin to understand this is scientific, it is evidence based it 00:33:37.68\00:33:47.09 creates often a change in the disease process within like with diabetes and high blood 00:33:47.09\00:33:52.23 pressure. And so on then I think you can hopefully down some of the natural resistance 00:33:52.23\00:34:00.37 that we all have towards change trade. Yes, I mean, it's a it's 00:34:00.37\00:34:07.38 a common. Trait that we all share, right? So I don't want to sort of make its own as it's all 00:34:07.38\00:34:14.42 the profiteering. That is the basis here for it. But in general change is always 00:34:14.42\00:34:21.02 difficult. It's a paradigm shift. And, you know, I mean, think of the pharmaceutical 00:34:21.02\00:34:27.40 industry they want to do now, if able trying these disease 00:34:27.40\00:34:33.07 around? >> Well, there will always be people who don't want to eat what they want to root. 00:34:33.07\00:34:37.94 >> A kid on there. So it was not be physically active. So there will always be plenty to 00:34:37.94\00:34:44.38 be treated >> almost like informed consent patients, 00:34:44.38\00:34:51.49 people. We all have a right to know. There's a lifestyle medicine and treatment option 00:34:51.49\00:35:00.63 for us try and that it doesn't need to just be a disease management approach. And and 00:35:00.63\00:35:06.30 that's really what we're advocating. >> And so as you're 00:35:06.30\00:35:09.97 thinking about it, talk to deal. You know, I want to just for those who are just thinking 00:35:09.97\00:35:13.84 about this book, it. I've been peeking in it some some and it is amazing took. Some people 00:35:13.84\00:35:20.35 might think one of my you turning from look at the understand preventing and 00:35:20.35\00:35:25.15 reversing last all diseases and looking on the inside. And I looked down at the top, 00:35:25.15\00:35:30.76 title of the book. And you one of the authors of this book. >> 00:35:30.76\00:35:37.77 Sure. Yeah. >> But I'm looking at is statistics that you put in here and I know that those of 00:35:37.77\00:35:40.34 you that are calling and getting your copies. But if you if you haven't called yet, 00:35:40.34\00:35:43.94 you want to call 6, 1, 8, 6 to 7, 4, 6, 5, 1, And I'm going to take one of these home with 00:35:43.94\00:35:50.95 I'm too because we are really serious about living long and living healthy. yeah, yeah, 00:35:50.95\00:35:56.55 you know, Susan has worked. I mean, incredibly heart in trying to move this concept of 00:35:56.55\00:36:05.59 lifestyle medicine into the mainstream the professional societies. She has a work hard 00:36:05.59\00:36:12.90 to establish affiliations with national organizations she has done everything she can to 00:36:12.90\00:36:18.01 create more understanding and awareness that this is the scientific, solid approach 00:36:18.01\00:36:24.18 that is building on medical care and complimenting Medicare, but 00:36:24.18\00:36:28.68 is making it the initial. The first treatment option for streaming option yet? I wanted 00:36:28.68\00:36:37.69 to another phase. And now in our discussion and that is that with all the efforts that you 00:36:37.69\00:36:40.40 have made it. Something is happening that it's going to break it wide open when the 00:36:40.40\00:36:47.30 next few years. As a matter of fact, pretty soon. I think okay. And so I want to talk to 00:36:47.30\00:36:51.91 you about a hero that appeared and this probably breaking this field wide open deuce a 00:36:51.91\00:36:59.41 hero, a hero. Okay. Haha. That's right. Are you ready for this time? I hear. Well, 00:36:59.41\00:37:04.92 let me tell you about this hero even a bit of a background, OK, 00:37:04.92\00:37:08.82 I want to tell you who it is. All right. I can't. Born in Arkansas. 4th of 5 children. 00:37:08.82\00:37:16.77 Family poverty stricken. A mother bear and the bringing food to the table. Father a 00:37:16.77\00:37:31.81 butcher that our call >> So, you know, it's those kind of situations very, very 00:37:31.81\00:37:34.55 difficult situation. And then in education. Consistent D student. You know D And then 00:37:34.55\00:37:44.69 when he went to the college, he was finally diagnosed with having dyslexia and where you 00:37:44.69\00:37:52.63 don't really read very, very well. >> And you have to make 00:37:52.63\00:37:57.57 brain adjustments. And once he found out that he had dyslexia. He turned from a D student into 00:37:57.57\00:38:06.65 a dean's lists to talk not student. He then began his career in law enforcement 00:38:06.65\00:38:13.92 police officer for success. For 22 years. Record and up as 00:38:13.92\00:38:18.83 captain and B can automatically the president off. United States. >> Dragon is in Haha. 00:38:18.83\00:38:29.40 But >> he started with York first. He started with the Brooklyn area. Casey became the 00:38:29.40\00:38:39.45 president of this borough there did very, very well. All can make a lot of friends. 00:38:39.45\00:38:43.12 Given up the political base and ran for president know ran for mayor of New York City. A 00:38:43.12\00:38:53.83 not bad January one. This slide this year. he became the new president. Know the mayor 00:38:53.83\00:38:59.33 of city yet right? Yes, amazing, isn't it? I'm not going to say 00:38:59.33\00:39:03.97 his name is on The New Yorker. Believe we were so nation for you. But but but you see what 00:39:03.97\00:39:11.55 happened is. He was diagnosed with severe end-stage diabetes. Wow. And once you begin to 00:39:11.55\00:39:20.49 understand that this was a fatal disease, once he realized that 00:39:20.49\00:39:24.16 he would probably face threatening. Situation of having an amputation of one of his 00:39:24.16\00:39:31.70 toes. want to recognize that he was in in in Lyon going blind in one eye. Once you realize 00:39:31.70\00:39:37.77 kidney disease was looming because that's what happened. This is what happens with 00:39:37.77\00:39:42.41 diabetes. He then began to look around. He was a searcher. He 00:39:42.41\00:39:47.98 looked for answers and they found a man by the name of Caldwell Esselstyn a prominent 00:39:47.98\00:39:53.72 physician who was here. that's right, right, right. Yeah. Also 00:39:53.72\00:39:59.29 with a firefighter Cleveland Clinic tried look for the member and he listened to this man and 00:39:59.29\00:40:04.13 he learned that diabetes is actually reversible, try and you can do it pretty rapidly off 00:40:04.13\00:40:09.27 within weeks. And so he fought this program and he traded his junk food for food's has grown. 00:40:09.27\00:40:16.38 I am beginning to get into an exercise program, treadmill into his office was working 00:40:16.38\00:40:20.28 out there every day and his diabetes begin to reverse itself. And within 3, 4 months 00:40:20.28\00:40:27.66 he was off medication. Norma insulin. He was a new man and he got so fired up. I need to 00:40:27.66\00:40:34.73 bring this to New York. This on my constituents. I have to help the people here I have a 00:40:34.73\00:40:42.87 responsibility. I know the answer. I figured it out in my own life. We need to reach and 00:40:42.87\00:40:45.14 what he did then what did you do with it? But the children, oh, well, he started a plant 00:40:45.14\00:40:52.81 based one day a week in school lunches for New York City schoolchildren. And he's 00:40:52.81\00:40:58.45 really advocating that it become. >> Infused into all the 00:40:58.45\00:41:02.36 health systems in York. >> fact, when this happened, my sister 00:41:02.36\00:41:06.76 who lives in New York used to it for the fire Department police department called and told she 00:41:06.76\00:41:12.73 said New York is being turned upside He talks about is we're going to talk about this. You 00:41:12.73\00:41:17.54 can get more of you got to put some meat on this. No pun intended. The second now the 00:41:17.54\00:41:21.48 program. >> Looking forward and he's in the go. You know, you know, he there are some. 00:41:21.48\00:41:27.95 >> One close to 1 million children in the public school system. Should we feed them 00:41:27.95\00:41:34.69 Well, should be turned them around. He said there are now 40% of the children grades one 00:41:34.69\00:41:42.00 to 8 that are overweight or obese should be feet these children to become larger or 00:41:42.00\00:41:47.90 should be turned the disease around. And so he began to lay the foundations for this. 00:41:47.90\00:41:51.57 concept bringing a healthy plant-based option. That's to the schools. Absolutely. Now 00:41:51.57\00:41:58.31 it's very visionary. >> and I believe it what he's able to do 00:41:58.31\00:42:05.69 in New York will reverberate and really serve as a prototype for other cities to follow. 00:42:05.69\00:42:11.96 >> You go. The other thing that we have to keep in mind is not one you would unfolding 00:42:11.96\00:42:15.00 this story. I was thinking about some other prominent politicians, Bill Clinton. 00:42:15.00\00:42:21.30 This is something we talked about with a heart when he had his heart attack. He realized, 00:42:21.30\00:42:26.14 wait a minute. This is not the way that I continue change his lifestyle when the gun. 00:42:26.14\00:42:29.81 Totally, totally. Yeah. Another one I found out Al Sharpton. 00:42:29.81\00:42:35.88 Another gentleman who I met him many years ago when I say met on the same elevator in the Hardly 00:42:35.88\00:42:41.52 a medium that's the elevator. I'm here tonight gave a C but at the time is a very large 00:42:41.52\00:42:47.23 man. But have you seen him lately? Yes, same things. A small man. He's practically 00:42:47.23\00:42:53.30 gun and changed his lifestyle and all these things that we're going to talk about you. 00:42:53.30\00:42:58.14 But I like looking bow to the second Susan, because you're going to walk us through right 00:42:58.14\00:43:03.24 now. We've been laying some foundation talking about the benefits of health. And as you 00:43:03.24\00:43:07.42 listening right now, you might be saying, well, I want to be educated. Also, if you're 00:43:07.42\00:43:13.42 watching, I'm I'm just looking forward to the second now. But Honey reminded again how they 00:43:13.42\00:43:17.13 could send their questions in and because I know you haven't you have questions when you 00:43:17.13\00:43:21.33 maybe already have some questions. You can begin to send 00:43:21.33\00:43:25.20 the net shore. >> You can e-mail us at live at 3 ABN DOT TV or you can text. Your message is to 00:43:25.20\00:43:34.88 us. Well, that's one you, Texas, or you 618-228-3975. That's one way. you can call the call 00:43:34.88\00:43:44.22 center right there open. You can call the call center for those 00:43:44.22\00:43:47.76 of you that just remember that number off the top head. I know they might want to call that 00:43:47.76\00:43:50.63 number for you on a U turn. Booklet. >> And I'm looking at this osteoporosis diaby Candice 00:43:50.63\00:43:59.07 or all of 4 pitches. You know you the full hyper tension, heart disease. notice not just 00:43:59.07\00:44:03.97 can I confess about something really Haha. But I noticed one day, but I was extremely, 00:44:03.97\00:44:14.32 extremely thirsty. Yeah. And my wife drinks water. Like it's going out of style. So I kept an 00:44:14.32\00:44:20.89 So thirsty, why am I thirsty? And you know what? A trace to 2 confession because as the sole 00:44:20.89\00:44:26.73 education but said it's a U turn, its U turn. And I want to tell you, I've trained 00:44:26.73\00:44:31.60 myself to not when we we just came back from shopping today. Only I didn't buy any but a 00:44:31.60\00:44:36.34 touch. haha that was so proud of invited 10 ships because I traced it to my inordinate. 00:44:36.34\00:44:43.85 Continuing to go into that stag a potato chip assault. It drying out moisture in my and 00:44:43.85\00:44:51.99 out. You could say why am I so Thursday and that her, you know what the turning point 00:44:51.99\00:44:54.66 was? When my lips started. It's saw My my and I would like that. 00:44:54.66\00:45:05.43 And I tasted the salt, mister. That's it. That's it. You're done. I'm done. I'm not doing 00:45:05.43\00:45:08.77 this any longer. I thought of turning around and I felt so much better. And I also noticed 00:45:08.77\00:45:17.75 Noticed that I began to shed a I think that there was some connection. Maybe you could 00:45:17.75\00:45:23.52 talk about this. some connection to too much salt and inordinate 00:45:23.52\00:45:30.06 water. And it talk about Yes, all you can hoard 10, 15, 2025 pounds. Sometimes of water 00:45:30.06\00:45:39.73 because of the high salt diet. Wow. And you see saw it is not really well appreciated by the 00:45:39.73\00:45:48.68 body. It is easily assimilated. Well, it's not putting the body in 2 of the best up state 00:45:48.68\00:45:54.52 of health. And so what happens is the body wants to this concentration of salt that you 00:45:54.52\00:46:01.82 consume and holds on to water to dilute it. That's how you can then possibly sometimes 00:46:01.82\00:46:07.76 have 10, 2030, pounds of extra weight just in water because it sought so it, the humid, 00:46:07.76\00:46:13.00 the breed that connection there. And I noticed it might mice ahead. More suits to 00:46:13.00\00:46:19.27 being weak And today we came back from the store. Didn't buy any artificial drinks all 00:46:19.27\00:46:26.38 my life. So we are going to drink more water taps. Absolutely. And so we need it. 00:46:26.38\00:46:32.25 We need my what I put lemon in mind. You know, so much pressure. Lemon, always you 00:46:32.25\00:46:37.36 see, you're just like like that man that tried to describe to 00:46:37.36\00:46:42.96 you good in use with an enthusiasm. Yeah, felt I need to take this message to my 00:46:42.96\00:46:48.10 constituency. I need to reach people in New York. The need to have this helpful information. 00:46:48.10\00:46:51.37 The need to be introduced to healthy foods. >> And he has become now one of the most 00:46:51.37\00:46:57.91 outspoken supporters of the lifetime medicine movement. Is that right? really he really 00:46:57.91\00:47:04.59 has. And I had the opportunity to speak at an event with him 5 00:47:04.59\00:47:08.99 or 6 years ago in. >> He spoke right before me, which is not the place you want to be 00:47:08.99\00:47:13.40 following. Someone like that. That is such a charismatic presenter as we'll get to see 00:47:13.40\00:47:18.70 here. And in a few minutes. But as this crowd roared night took the stage on. I said, what do 00:47:18.70\00:47:25.94 you think of this for president and the crowd little. Did we know foreshadowing that he would 00:47:25.94\00:47:34.58 become air of awe one of the largest cities in the world? You know, I think you've laid 00:47:34.58\00:47:36.69 such a wonderful Segway in foundation. We have a couple of back to back the videos we 00:47:36.69\00:47:41.19 can show right now. as to what you priming about what you introduced and after these 2 00:47:41.19\00:47:47.03 videos, we're going to have a few comments before we close our first hour out. And I 00:47:47.03\00:47:52.20 think that's going to a couple of things introduce you to the person that we've been 00:47:52.20\00:47:56.37 alluding Secondly, in Aceh, in a sense, summarize what we've covered the first hour. 00:47:56.37\00:48:00.04 >> And then we're going to the educational part of the second hour. So just sit back and 00:48:00.04\00:48:03.81 watch these 2 videos back to back. >> This is the most 00:48:03.81\00:48:13.52 comprehensive expansion of lifestyle medicine in the nation. In the nation. New 00:48:13.52\00:48:19.73 York is going to change the conversation about use in food not to feed healthcare crises 00:48:19.73\00:48:29.54 but to stop the crises. And some cases like my case to some of the chronic diseases 00:48:29.54\00:48:36.04 that historically we said it was not possible living with chronic diseases. And we need 00:48:36.04\00:48:40.18 to be something. A chronic disease does not only impact the individual who has the 00:48:40.18\00:48:46.52 kind of disease. It impacts the entire family and everyone in his room know someone who's 00:48:46.52\00:48:53.83 going through a chronic disease. They are not going through 00:48:53.83\00:48:57.87 chronic disease themselves. That is what we must understand. A chronic disease hijacks your 00:48:57.87\00:49:06.84 life. It hijacks the life of your entire family. And that is why this is significant moment. 00:49:06.84\00:49:11.08 What we are doing. And those who are going through the chronic diseases and whatever 00:49:11.08\00:49:16.02 disease we're talking about to my heart disease, hypertension, 00:49:16.02\00:49:24.66 diabetes, pre diabetes and all the other health concerns associated with obesity. We have 00:49:24.66\00:49:29.53 a health care crisis that's sustainable. In 2 to be bold enough as the city and the 00:49:29.53\00:49:36.40 hospital system to say we're going to do something differently is really 00:49:36.40\00:49:42.01 commendable. And I just think of the entire this expansion is about helping patients make 00:49:42.01\00:49:47.95 healthy, a lifestyle changes. Including plant based diet, physical activity, improved 00:49:47.95\00:49:55.79 sleep, sleeping habits is stress reduction, all the things that 00:49:55.79\00:50:02.03 we must incorporate into our lives so that we can do with the stress of being in a stressful 00:50:02.03\00:50:05.33 environment. I'm living a healthy lifestyle and I'm New York. It's to have as many 00:50:05.33\00:50:15.31 plant based space mills as possible because the science is clear. The more you eat 00:50:15.31\00:50:21.25 plants, the more you eat fruits, the more you have a healthy lifestyle away from 00:50:21.25\00:50:26.45 old the processed food, the healthier you are going to be. I know how I feel every day 00:50:26.45\00:50:34.00 and I want you to feel the same way every day. And so those who 00:50:34.00\00:50:39.00 have questions or what I and eating. I'm over and I know how to take care of myself. And if 00:50:39.00\00:50:50.38 you haven't notice, look at that pitch is of yes, 2 years and they look at the pitch is it. 00:50:50.38\00:50:58.55 >> I wear my son so much better than I 8 years ago. >> And if you like it or not, 00:50:58.55\00:51:04.89 you have to say, yes, you I would have followed the path that I was would not be 00:51:04.89\00:51:14.24 standing here. I was going blind. They say there's nothing they could do for you 00:51:14.24\00:51:21.61 every week. You want to be blind in a year. That team and that I ignored it. They said 00:51:21.61\00:51:27.52 you have permanent nerve damage. lose something isn't holes. I 00:51:27.52\00:51:31.12 was going have to take insulin every day. I was taking medication. They have to get the 00:51:31.12\00:51:40.10 medication for my time. High blood pressure medication for my cholesterol problem of several 00:51:40.10\00:51:45.20 medications for my diabetes. And it soon be given medication for my also, they this is permitted. 00:51:45.20\00:51:50.37 Add those This is not sustainable. And so when you look at the fact them, I did 00:51:50.37\00:51:57.41 not have to buy that that that metformin of the insulin, the high blood pressure that this 00:51:57.41\00:52:02.95 that and we to get all of those things. So it's not how much, of 00:52:02.95\00:52:07.26 course, with his program, how much is going to cause us that we don't have this program and 00:52:07.26\00:52:11.53 those are just a dollar amounts. It did traumatize a shoe of my family member, my son, when he 00:52:11.53\00:52:19.57 when he heard what happened, he he says You have a BMW, put the best guessing you call. You 00:52:19.57\00:52:26.17 can put the best food in your body. closely not to do this. And so we're going to come up. 00:52:26.17\00:52:34.32 Whatever the numbers, all that we've got to meet those doing numbers because we I want 00:52:34.32\00:52:38.52 health care system is not sustainable. It's just not sustainable. And I'm not going 00:52:38.52\00:52:44.59 to allow this to continue in my 4 years in office, I eat a plant based sent to life. Some 00:52:44.59\00:52:53.03 people want to call me big in the Orioles and they drink Coca-Cola. I don't. plant base 00:52:53.03\00:53:00.91 sent to life and I'm not going down this rabbit hole of would you be if you cake and has 00:53:00.91\00:53:07.12 AIG's in it that you analyze it? I'm not doing that. The more plant based you eat the 00:53:07.12\00:53:12.89 better and help the UAW. That is my question to those who have 00:53:12.89\00:53:16.46 followed me around restaurants wonder would when I'm ordering. Listen, I'm not doing that. That 00:53:16.46\00:53:22.26 noise to me. I got to get New York is to eat a plant base sent to life. And if that's not a 00:53:22.26\00:53:27.14 question, is it that people accept it is cool with me. >> Wow. cool with me. Was that 00:53:27.14\00:53:34.28 was Mayor Eric Adams of the proud City of New Wow. You know the full when mice when 00:53:34.28\00:53:43.42 this initiative was foist was that that's conviction. That's a person is concerned about a 00:53:43.42\00:53:49.62 city. You're talking about 16 to 18 million people in great in area and he's right. The 00:53:49.62\00:53:56.67 medical costs are not sustainable. That's out of my city. That's right. 00:53:56.67\00:54:01.10 Absolutely. And in the person who was standing >> over Mary 00:54:01.10\00:54:05.17 Adams right shoulder is doctor Michelle Mic Mac and re. And and she's a former member of our 00:54:05.17\00:54:09.58 board of directors.
