Welcome back to the second hour. 00:00:12.01\00:00:14.04 We are so glad to be here with you. 00:00:14.08\00:00:16.51 I'm Shelley Quinn. JD Quinn. 00:00:16.54\00:00:18.38 And our special guest tonight is pastoring... 00:00:18.41\00:00:22.05 And I want to say pastor, 00:00:22.08\00:00:23.69 he is actually the director of the Sabbath School 00:00:23.75\00:00:28.42 and Personal Ministries Department 00:00:28.46\00:00:30.39 of the Michigan Conference 00:00:30.43\00:00:32.16 of Seventh-day Adventist Churches. 00:00:32.19\00:00:34.36 Easier just to say pastor, 00:00:34.36\00:00:36.03 but he's on fire as you can tell, 00:00:36.06\00:00:38.33 and we are talking tonight about Sabbath School ALIVE! 00:00:38.37\00:00:44.34 All caps with an exclamation point after it. 00:00:44.37\00:00:48.01 And what Kameron is going to do in this hour, 00:00:48.04\00:00:51.05 we're taking your questions at 618, 00:00:51.08\00:00:54.58 you can text questions, 00:00:54.62\00:00:56.42 618-228-3975. 00:00:56.45\00:01:01.26 And hey, he's a pastor. 00:01:01.29\00:01:02.89 You can ask him any question you want to, 00:01:02.92\00:01:04.96 but we hope most of them come in on Sabbath School, 00:01:04.99\00:01:08.66 or you can email us 00:01:08.70\00:01:12.47 live@3abn.tv. 00:01:12.50\00:01:16.34 Kameron, we're so glad you're here with us today. 00:01:16.37\00:01:20.48 I understand that you grew up playing the piano, 00:01:20.54\00:01:22.88 play by ear and everything. 00:01:22.91\00:01:24.35 So we're going to slip this in real quick, 00:01:24.38\00:01:26.11 because we love music. 00:01:26.15\00:01:27.82 We're going to hear again from Kendol Bacchus, 00:01:27.85\00:01:31.19 and he's going to be playing "Shepherd of My Heart." 00:01:31.22\00:01:33.96 Well, I certainly, I enjoy that. 00:07:13.73\00:07:17.00 He's, you know, he's very gifted. 00:07:17.07\00:07:18.77 Yes, he is. 00:07:18.80\00:07:20.14 One thing that I think a lot of people 00:07:20.17\00:07:21.94 may have some misinformation and you can clear this up. 00:07:21.97\00:07:26.98 I think a lot of people think that 00:07:27.01\00:07:28.41 from a preliminary standpoint, 00:07:28.44\00:07:30.48 there's an order in church 00:07:30.55\00:07:33.92 and so our Sabbath School time is the first step. 00:07:33.95\00:07:38.12 It's just a preliminary position. 00:07:38.15\00:07:41.19 There you go, that phrase right there, 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.46 just a preliminary. 00:07:43.53\00:07:45.49 That kind of raises my hackles a little bit. 00:07:45.53\00:07:47.66 Let me tell why? 00:07:47.66\00:07:49.60 You hit a nerve, brother, and here's what I'm thinking 00:07:49.63\00:07:51.60 because Sabbath School 00:07:51.63\00:07:54.00 is not a preliminary service to church. 00:07:54.04\00:07:56.97 Preliminary typically means the unimportant stuff 00:07:57.01\00:08:00.61 that only leads up to the real thing, right? 00:08:00.64\00:08:03.38 And so we come to think of the Sabbath School 00:08:03.41\00:08:05.68 as like an optional, 00:08:05.71\00:08:07.08 it's like the parsley on the plate. 00:08:07.15\00:08:08.48 It's cute, it's nice, it's good for certain people, 00:08:08.52\00:08:10.42 but the real stuff comes in church, right? 00:08:10.45\00:08:12.69 And so we kind of get this idea 00:08:12.72\00:08:14.49 that Sabbath School isn't essential, 00:08:14.52\00:08:16.76 that Sabbath School is merely optional. 00:08:16.79\00:08:18.86 And that's exactly what we see 00:08:18.89\00:08:20.33 when we vote with our feet, you know, 00:08:20.36\00:08:21.96 typical Adventist congregation will have, 00:08:22.00\00:08:24.37 let's say a hundred members on the books. 00:08:24.40\00:08:25.97 Okay? 00:08:26.00\00:08:27.34 How many of those actually attend the worship service? 00:08:27.37\00:08:30.11 Probably about 50. Okay? 00:08:30.14\00:08:32.54 How many of those typically attend the Sabbath School? 00:08:32.57\00:08:36.44 Half again. Okay? 00:08:36.48\00:08:38.31 Then go down to prayer meeting. Let me attend that. 00:08:38.35\00:08:42.15 So then how big is your church? 00:08:42.18\00:08:43.82 See what I'm saying, but we keep pushing 00:08:43.89\00:08:46.12 all these other things 00:08:46.15\00:08:47.56 as optional little pieces of unessential, 00:08:47.59\00:08:50.96 things that some people do 00:08:50.99\00:08:52.33 or specialize when the reality is that 00:08:52.36\00:08:54.96 we get this concept that 00:08:55.00\00:08:56.93 the worship service is the only place 00:08:56.97\00:08:58.77 where we're all supposed to be there together, 00:08:58.80\00:09:01.24 but everyone is supposed to have a part 00:09:01.27\00:09:02.60 in the Sabbath School. 00:09:02.64\00:09:03.97 We should all be studying our Bibles throughout the week. 00:09:04.04\00:09:06.04 We should all be fellowshipping together. 00:09:06.07\00:09:07.74 We should all be doing outreach, 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.01 listening to testimonies 00:09:10.08\00:09:11.41 and having a testimony to give ourselves, right? 00:09:11.45\00:09:13.68 And that all happens in the Sabbath School. 00:09:13.75\00:09:15.35 And when you cut that out of the Christian life, 00:09:15.38\00:09:17.99 the fellowship and the small group dynamic 00:09:18.02\00:09:20.02 where there's accountability and interest in your own like. 00:09:20.09\00:09:22.76 One of the reasons people 00:09:22.79\00:09:24.16 either love or hate a large church 00:09:24.19\00:09:25.53 is because you can get lost in it. 00:09:25.56\00:09:27.13 You can be just another brick in the wall, you know, 00:09:27.23\00:09:28.90 but that doesn't happen in a small dynamic like that. 00:09:28.93\00:09:32.07 And that's precious, it's sweet. 00:09:32.10\00:09:33.64 And so there's fellowship and accountability. 00:09:33.67\00:09:36.07 There's deeper study. 00:09:36.10\00:09:37.81 And as iron sharpens iron that we talked about before 00:09:37.84\00:09:40.81 and there's opportunities to witness that 00:09:40.88\00:09:42.51 are unique to the Sabbath School. 00:09:42.54\00:09:44.05 Plus like for instance, 00:09:44.08\00:09:45.41 if I want to invite and I don't know 00:09:45.45\00:09:47.02 why we don't do this, 00:09:47.05\00:09:48.45 but nobody invites people to Sabbath School. 00:09:48.48\00:09:51.15 If you ask your friend, hey, 00:09:51.19\00:09:52.72 what time, if a friend asks you, 00:09:52.75\00:09:54.19 what time does your church start? 00:09:54.26\00:09:56.49 Nine times out of 10, 00:09:56.52\00:09:57.86 they're going to say 11 o'clock and not 9.30. 00:09:57.89\00:10:00.50 When every local church has a Sabbath School program, 00:10:00.53\00:10:02.90 but it never even dawned on Sabbath School people 00:10:02.93\00:10:04.57 to invite them, you know? 00:10:04.60\00:10:06.20 But the thing is, and I'm not saying 00:10:06.23\00:10:08.10 stop inviting people to church, 00:10:08.14\00:10:09.97 but I'm saying start inviting people 00:10:10.01\00:10:11.34 to Sabbath School 00:10:11.37\00:10:12.71 and they can stay for church, right? 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.08 That come be with our friend group 00:10:14.14\00:10:16.28 that we meet with and we study the Bible, 00:10:16.31\00:10:18.08 we hear exciting mission reports. 00:10:18.11\00:10:19.45 We pray for one another. 00:10:19.48\00:10:20.82 We have, we socialize outside of this, right? 00:10:20.88\00:10:23.12 It's a... Can I add one more thing? 00:10:23.15\00:10:26.65 We talk about church growth. 00:10:26.72\00:10:28.29 And oftentimes when we get into public evangelism, 00:10:28.32\00:10:30.63 we talk about, 00:10:30.69\00:10:32.03 are they ready to be baptized or not? 00:10:32.06\00:10:34.23 You're either a member of the church 00:10:34.30\00:10:35.70 or you're not a member of the church. 00:10:35.73\00:10:37.63 Friends, you can be a member of the Sabbath School 00:10:37.67\00:10:40.27 without being a member of the church. 00:10:40.30\00:10:41.97 Yes. You can be a regular attender. 00:10:42.00\00:10:44.54 And I know in the places 00:10:44.57\00:10:45.91 where Sabbath School is growing well, 00:10:45.94\00:10:47.64 it's not just because a lot of Adventists go, 00:10:47.68\00:10:49.98 it's because that's where they bring their friends 00:10:50.01\00:10:51.51 who aren't Adventist, 00:10:51.55\00:10:52.88 but they feel a sense of belonging 00:10:52.91\00:10:54.75 to this family dynamic 00:10:54.78\00:10:56.45 when they haven't had to make the commitment 00:10:56.48\00:10:58.19 that they may not be ready for yet, 00:10:58.22\00:10:59.55 or may not fully understand. 00:10:59.59\00:11:00.99 That's beautiful. 00:11:01.02\00:11:02.36 But you know what I'm saying, 00:11:02.39\00:11:03.73 It's a bridge into the body of Christ 00:11:03.76\00:11:06.70 through this less threatening, less intimidating, 00:11:06.73\00:11:09.40 smaller group fellowship dynamic, 00:11:09.43\00:11:11.90 where I can ask my questions 00:11:11.93\00:11:13.90 and I can see the Bible in a pace 00:11:13.94\00:11:16.07 that I can appreciate, not just listening to a sermon. 00:11:16.10\00:11:18.31 You see what I'm saying? 00:11:18.34\00:11:19.67 So it's designed to be an opportunity 00:11:19.71\00:11:23.71 for individuals to practice personal ministry 00:11:23.75\00:11:27.95 and bring people in. 00:11:27.98\00:11:29.32 Let's talk, let's get really practical 00:11:29.35\00:11:31.45 because somebody may be sitting at home 00:11:31.49\00:11:33.42 and saying, 00:11:33.46\00:11:34.86 well, they, my Sabbath School class is boring, 00:11:34.89\00:11:37.73 or we just got a great question. 00:11:37.76\00:11:40.06 We're going to get to this question that says, 00:11:40.10\00:11:42.46 in our local church, 00:11:42.50\00:11:43.83 whenever we're discussing Sabbath School lesson, 00:11:43.90\00:11:46.30 it often leads to theological debates. 00:11:46.33\00:11:48.97 What are your thoughts on this? 00:11:49.00\00:11:50.34 But before we get to that, 00:11:50.37\00:11:53.01 it's the opportunity, you know, 00:11:53.04\00:11:56.71 I don't think I've ever invited anybody 00:11:56.78\00:11:58.61 at Sabbath School, that's terrible. 00:11:58.65\00:12:01.05 The confession is good for the soul, right? 00:12:01.08\00:12:02.42 But hard on the reputation. 00:12:02.45\00:12:05.19 But you know, that small group dynamic 00:12:05.22\00:12:09.09 is something that would probably, 00:12:09.12\00:12:10.99 people would be more comfortable 00:12:11.03\00:12:13.43 rather than just hearing someone 00:12:13.50\00:12:15.43 when they're seeing the answers in the Bible themselves. 00:12:15.46\00:12:20.20 I think part of the problem is, 00:12:20.24\00:12:23.24 one, people don't study their lessons 00:12:23.27\00:12:25.37 before they come to sit, you know, 00:12:25.41\00:12:26.94 the Sabbath School, the adult study guide was, 00:12:26.98\00:12:33.01 is provided for every member. 00:12:33.05\00:12:36.02 So that, and if you're not a member, 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.72 you can go to absg.adventist.org 00:12:38.75\00:12:41.99 and download a copy. 00:12:42.02\00:12:44.29 But it's provided so that you will have 00:12:44.33\00:12:47.56 a bite-size Bible study every day 00:12:47.60\00:12:50.50 during the week. 00:12:50.53\00:12:51.87 It's something that your Sabbath School lesson 00:12:51.90\00:12:54.60 is there to drive you into the Bible. 00:12:54.64\00:12:57.87 Now, sometimes some people at Sabbath School 00:12:57.91\00:13:01.71 practically are just reading the lesson. 00:13:01.74\00:13:04.61 Others maybe lose control to someone in the class 00:13:04.65\00:13:09.02 who wants to do all the talking and they haven't studied 00:13:09.05\00:13:12.99 or there's these theological debates, 00:13:13.02\00:13:15.49 let's get practical. 00:13:15.52\00:13:16.86 Let's unpack a few of them 00:13:16.93\00:13:18.26 because there was a lot of elements as an onion 00:13:18.29\00:13:19.63 we just talked about, 00:13:19.66\00:13:20.96 let's peel it back a little bit. 00:13:21.00\00:13:22.33 Okay. 00:13:22.36\00:13:23.73 I think the first one we talked about was theological debate. 00:13:23.77\00:13:26.47 Now debate is one thing. Discussion is fine. 00:13:26.50\00:13:30.07 Debate may not be where we want to go, right? 00:13:30.11\00:13:32.51 A point, counterpoint. 00:13:32.54\00:13:34.04 We're not here to like 00:13:34.08\00:13:35.41 arm wrestle in a spiritual sense 00:13:35.44\00:13:37.41 or something like that. 00:13:37.45\00:13:38.78 But we do want to have 00:13:38.81\00:13:40.15 lively understanding and dynamic, you know, 00:13:40.18\00:13:42.92 engagement by members of the Sabbath School 00:13:42.95\00:13:45.22 with their teacher. 00:13:45.25\00:13:47.22 But you also mentioned something being boring, right? 00:13:47.26\00:13:50.83 And I think that 00:13:50.89\00:13:52.23 somehow this urban legend has crept 00:13:52.26\00:13:53.90 into our collective thinking these days 00:13:53.96\00:13:56.10 and that the way to make a Sabbath School 00:13:56.13\00:13:58.90 more interesting because by the way, 00:13:58.93\00:14:02.17 let me share a statement with this. 00:14:02.20\00:14:03.54 Listen to this, Christian Service, page 211. 00:14:03.61\00:14:05.81 I want to be patently clear. 00:14:05.84\00:14:07.18 Our Sabbath School should be more interesting. 00:14:07.21\00:14:08.54 Yes. 00:14:08.58\00:14:09.91 So shall our worship services, 00:14:09.94\00:14:11.28 our evangelism meetings our prayers, everything. 00:14:11.31\00:14:12.65 She says this, Christian Service, page 211. 00:14:12.68\00:14:15.55 "Our meetings should be made intensely interesting. 00:14:15.58\00:14:19.65 They should be pervaded 00:14:19.69\00:14:21.02 with the very atmosphere of heaven. 00:14:21.06\00:14:22.89 Let there be no long dry speeches 00:14:22.92\00:14:25.56 and formal prayers merely for the sake 00:14:25.59\00:14:27.66 of occupying the time." 00:14:27.73\00:14:29.73 She goes on, "All should be ready 00:14:29.76\00:14:31.20 to act their part with promptness. 00:14:31.23\00:14:32.70 And when their duty is done, the meeting should be closed." 00:14:32.73\00:14:35.10 Right? So do a thing and then be done. 00:14:35.14\00:14:37.07 But there's a pacing of this 00:14:37.11\00:14:38.94 that needs to not just be formal 00:14:38.97\00:14:40.48 and just going through the motions 00:14:40.54\00:14:41.88 and to hollow ceremony, right? 00:14:41.91\00:14:43.61 She says, "Thus, the interest will be kept up to the last. 00:14:43.65\00:14:46.05 This is offering to God acceptable worship. 00:14:46.08\00:14:48.32 His service should be made interesting and attractive 00:14:48.35\00:14:50.69 and be allowed to degenerate into a dry form." 00:14:50.75\00:14:53.86 And that's the right objective to aim toward. 00:14:53.92\00:14:56.09 Now, how do you get there? 00:14:56.12\00:14:58.69 Sometimes people have said 00:14:58.73\00:15:00.66 in order to be more interesting, 00:15:00.73\00:15:02.23 we need to be more entertaining. 00:15:02.26\00:15:05.53 Well, that's not what we're talking about. 00:15:05.57\00:15:07.14 Okay? 00:15:07.17\00:15:08.50 Nor have an, especially in the study dynamic 00:15:08.54\00:15:12.24 of the Sabbath School, like the entertaining 00:15:12.27\00:15:14.78 might be a temptation in the corporate worship. 00:15:14.81\00:15:16.95 Yeah, let's get more things, 00:15:16.98\00:15:18.31 lights and sound into all this kind of stuff. 00:15:18.35\00:15:20.25 But in the study session, 00:15:20.32\00:15:21.65 how do you make a Sabbath School study group 00:15:21.68\00:15:23.05 more interesting. 00:15:23.08\00:15:24.42 Most people would say, 00:15:24.45\00:15:25.79 what you do is get out of this linear pew situation. 00:15:25.82\00:15:28.62 Let's get everybody sitting in a circle. 00:15:28.66\00:15:30.93 There's nothing wrong with circles. 00:15:30.96\00:15:32.29 Okay. I'm fine with circle. 00:15:32.33\00:15:33.73 But what typically that means is 00:15:33.80\00:15:35.63 I'm also not going to be the teacher anymore. 00:15:35.66\00:15:37.73 I'm just going to be the facilitator. 00:15:37.77\00:15:39.40 I'm just going to be the moderator 00:15:39.43\00:15:41.00 and whatever you guys, we want to get more engagement. 00:15:41.04\00:15:43.47 We want to get more contribution 00:15:43.51\00:15:45.21 and more voices, 00:15:45.24\00:15:46.57 you know, into the discussion, which has its place for sure. 00:15:46.64\00:15:50.81 But sometimes when the teacher aggregates 00:15:50.85\00:15:54.22 that role of teaching, 00:15:54.28\00:15:56.42 what you end up with is what the scripture 00:15:56.45\00:15:58.45 calls the sacrifice of fools. 00:15:58.49\00:16:00.99 Okay. 00:16:01.02\00:16:02.36 Now I'm going to, 00:16:02.39\00:16:03.76 anytime I've tried to learn this lesson, 00:16:03.79\00:16:05.13 anytime I say something controversial sounding, 00:16:05.16\00:16:07.30 I want to make sure that 00:16:07.36\00:16:08.66 I'm quoting inspiration and I'm just behind them. 00:16:08.70\00:16:11.37 Okay? 00:16:11.40\00:16:12.73 But if you go to Ecclesiastes Chapter 5, 00:16:12.77\00:16:15.50 I want to show you this passage here. 00:16:15.54\00:16:18.47 My good friend, my associate director 00:16:18.51\00:16:20.11 in the Sabbath School Personal Ministries Department, 00:16:20.18\00:16:21.81 Mark Howard. 00:16:21.84\00:16:23.18 Pastor Mark Howard pointed this passage out. 00:16:23.21\00:16:25.18 Yes, we worked together and we'll get back to that 00:16:25.21\00:16:27.05 because I want to talk about talking points in a minute. 00:16:27.12\00:16:28.78 But for right now, Ecclesiastes Chapter 5, 00:16:28.82\00:16:32.25 listen, carefully what's being described here 00:16:32.29\00:16:33.96 verse 1 says, "Walk prudently 00:16:33.99\00:16:36.62 when you go to the house of God." 00:16:36.66\00:16:38.26 Now let's time out. 00:16:38.29\00:16:39.63 We're going to demonstrate 00:16:39.66\00:16:40.96 a little Bible study right here. 00:16:41.00\00:16:42.33 Notice the context of this is not just 00:16:42.36\00:16:43.73 when you walk by the way 00:16:43.77\00:16:45.10 or when you go to work or whatever, 00:16:45.13\00:16:46.47 it's specifically about going to church, right? 00:16:46.50\00:16:48.70 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God 00:16:48.74\00:16:52.21 and draw near, that is draw near 00:16:52.24\00:16:54.18 to the house of God for what purpose? 00:16:54.24\00:16:56.08 To hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools. 00:16:56.11\00:17:01.68 So he's juxtaposing two things, you're either going to hear, 00:17:01.72\00:17:05.15 or you're going to give 00:17:05.19\00:17:06.52 what he calls the sacrifice of fool. 00:17:06.55\00:17:07.92 And he explains what that is. 00:17:07.96\00:17:09.56 For they do not know that they do evil, 00:17:09.59\00:17:11.39 and he explains what that is. 00:17:11.43\00:17:12.76 Verse 2, "Do not be rash with your mouth 00:17:12.79\00:17:15.76 and let not your heart utter anything hastily before God." 00:17:15.80\00:17:20.17 We would probably in our common parlance call that 00:17:20.24\00:17:22.54 shooting from the lip or being, having the gift of gab, right? 00:17:22.57\00:17:26.78 "For God is in heaven and you are on earth, 00:17:26.81\00:17:30.95 therefore let your words be," what? 00:17:30.98\00:17:32.91 "Few. 00:17:32.95\00:17:34.62 For a dream comes through much activity 00:17:34.65\00:17:36.79 and a fool's voice is known by his many words." 00:17:36.82\00:17:41.39 Now Sister Shelley, going back to your original question 00:17:41.42\00:17:43.63 about doctrinal debates 00:17:43.66\00:17:46.93 and discussions, disputes, okay? 00:17:47.00\00:17:49.70 I don't know if you've run into this phenomenon or not, 00:17:49.73\00:17:53.50 but you kind of alluded to it a minute ago. 00:17:53.54\00:17:56.77 People will oftentimes 00:17:56.81\00:18:00.61 not study their lesson, 00:18:00.64\00:18:04.21 yet have strong opinions 00:18:04.28\00:18:06.58 about anything that's discussed. 00:18:06.61\00:18:08.98 They'll say like, look, 00:18:09.02\00:18:10.35 I didn't studied the lesson this week, 00:18:10.42\00:18:11.75 but I have a very strong, like what are you doing. 00:18:11.79\00:18:14.66 Right, if you haven't studied the Word of God, 00:18:14.69\00:18:16.32 if you haven't looked up some, you know contexts, 00:18:16.36\00:18:19.23 and some cross-referencing, 00:18:19.26\00:18:20.83 haven't looked it up in the Spirit of Prophecy. 00:18:20.86\00:18:22.16 You haven't done your homework 00:18:22.20\00:18:23.53 and legwork to come to that idea, 00:18:23.57\00:18:25.10 you're just offering your uninformed opinion 00:18:25.13\00:18:29.57 when that it, by seems to fit 00:18:29.60\00:18:32.57 the definition of the sacrifice of fools. 00:18:32.61\00:18:35.08 So I think comment in the class is good. 00:18:35.11\00:18:39.55 Discussion is good, 00:18:39.58\00:18:41.08 but just my opinion versus your opinion, 00:18:41.12\00:18:42.82 debate and debate. 00:18:42.85\00:18:44.19 Well, what I think, and I think that, 00:18:44.22\00:18:45.55 I don't care what you think in a Jesus 00:18:45.59\00:18:47.46 loves you kind of way. 00:18:47.49\00:18:48.82 You know what I'm saying? 00:18:48.86\00:18:50.19 But I care what the Bible thinks. 00:18:50.23\00:18:51.69 When it comes to issues of doctrine and faith 00:18:51.73\00:18:54.10 and practice and righteous living, 00:18:54.10\00:18:56.06 whatnot, I want to know 00:18:56.10\00:18:57.43 what inspired Word has to say to me, right? 00:18:57.47\00:19:01.30 And so that's the goal of the Sabbath School 00:19:01.34\00:19:03.07 is to get us into the Word. 00:19:03.10\00:19:04.61 Now, there can be good dynamic. 00:19:04.64\00:19:06.47 There can be questions that can be offered, 00:19:06.51\00:19:08.04 but sometimes the other thing is the teachers, 00:19:08.08\00:19:10.88 again, abdicate that responsibility 00:19:10.91\00:19:12.75 to keep the discussion on focus. 00:19:12.78\00:19:15.78 And now we're just chasing theological rabbits. 00:19:15.82\00:19:18.25 You know, we're going down every little corner 00:19:18.29\00:19:19.82 and every little avenue and people leave saying, 00:19:19.85\00:19:22.62 I heard 1600 opinions, 00:19:22.66\00:19:24.29 and I'm not more edified than, 00:19:24.36\00:19:25.69 you know, there's a lot more heat than light 00:19:25.73\00:19:27.60 was produced by this, right? 00:19:27.66\00:19:28.96 Yeah. 00:19:29.00\00:19:30.37 And so I think that 00:19:30.40\00:19:31.73 we need to put the school back in Sabbath School. 00:19:31.77\00:19:33.34 Amen. 00:19:33.37\00:19:34.70 That it's not just a corporate round table opinion fest. 00:19:34.74\00:19:39.64 What it needs to be 00:19:39.67\00:19:41.01 is a guided dynamic interesting study 00:19:41.04\00:19:45.38 of the Word of God. 00:19:45.41\00:19:46.75 But that's the question, I mean, you just hit on, 00:19:46.82\00:19:49.12 it's the study of the Word of God. 00:19:49.15\00:19:50.82 We're not studying the Sabbath School, 00:19:50.89\00:19:54.46 what we call the quarterly... 00:19:54.49\00:19:55.82 The quarterly, now I remember, 00:19:55.86\00:19:57.23 yeah, you're paranoid, aren't you? 00:19:57.26\00:19:58.59 The Adult Bible Study Guide, 00:19:58.63\00:19:59.96 it's there to drive us into the Bible. 00:20:00.00\00:20:02.90 But so often people will go, 00:20:02.93\00:20:05.10 okay, now on Tuesday's list, oh, on Wednesday's list. 00:20:05.13\00:20:09.04 Yes. Well, let's... 00:20:09.07\00:20:11.04 I know, were you going to come to a question? 00:20:11.07\00:20:12.67 I'm sorry, I just started cutting you off 00:20:12.71\00:20:14.04 because I got a lot to say about it. 00:20:14.08\00:20:15.41 Go ahead. But just think about it. 00:20:15.44\00:20:18.28 This, the topic, for instance, 00:20:18.31\00:20:21.25 this quarter is the covenant, right? 00:20:21.28\00:20:24.35 And it's a beautiful study from Genesis 00:20:24.39\00:20:26.45 all the way to the end of the Bible 00:20:26.49\00:20:27.82 about God's relationship, His contractual, 00:20:27.86\00:20:30.39 His covenantal relationship with His people. 00:20:30.43\00:20:32.29 It's loaded with great material. 00:20:32.33\00:20:33.76 Okay? 00:20:33.80\00:20:35.10 Now, each week, the lesson study 00:20:35.13\00:20:38.87 is broken into seven increments, 00:20:38.90\00:20:41.30 each corresponding to a day of the week. 00:20:41.34\00:20:44.04 Do you think that the contributor to that lesson 00:20:44.07\00:20:46.37 when he was writing it out thought in seven day blocks? 00:20:46.41\00:20:50.71 Of course not. 00:20:50.78\00:20:52.11 He had like one overarching, 00:20:52.15\00:20:54.52 you know, theme for that week or a topic, 00:20:54.55\00:20:56.82 or had a couple of main points 00:20:56.85\00:20:58.19 he wanted to hit in that week, 00:20:58.22\00:20:59.85 but you have to divide it into seven, 00:20:59.89\00:21:01.66 because one of the purposes 00:21:01.69\00:21:03.36 of the study guide is to help people 00:21:03.43\00:21:05.46 get in the habit 00:21:05.49\00:21:06.83 of regularly daily studying their Bible. 00:21:06.90\00:21:09.70 But we have taken the seven day format 00:21:09.73\00:21:11.23 to think that 00:21:11.27\00:21:12.60 that's how we're supposed to teach it in the class. 00:21:12.63\00:21:14.24 That our job is to start 00:21:14.27\00:21:15.60 with Sabbath afternoon's illustration, 00:21:15.64\00:21:17.11 and then go to Sunday's point 00:21:17.17\00:21:18.74 and then go to Monday's point and then go to, 00:21:18.77\00:21:20.84 that there are seven equally important points 00:21:20.88\00:21:23.08 scattered evenly throughout the week. 00:21:23.11\00:21:26.18 And the point of the Sabbath School class 00:21:26.21\00:21:27.85 is to rehearse those for us. 00:21:27.88\00:21:29.75 No, it's not. 00:21:29.78\00:21:31.39 You were supposed to have 00:21:31.42\00:21:32.75 studied your Sabbath School lesson, 00:21:32.79\00:21:34.12 and the teacher would have done the same thing. 00:21:34.16\00:21:36.06 And through his study or her study, 00:21:36.09\00:21:38.53 or, and your study, you should be able to draw out 00:21:38.56\00:21:42.06 from the scriptures these important themes. 00:21:42.10\00:21:44.60 Now, we have a program, 00:21:44.63\00:21:46.20 I told you I was going to come back to this called 00:21:46.23\00:21:47.57 Talking Points. 00:21:47.60\00:21:48.94 Let me give a background about this. 00:21:48.97\00:21:50.34 So when the pandemic hit and our churches locked down 00:21:50.37\00:21:53.74 and everything shifted online very quickly. 00:21:53.81\00:21:57.91 Pastor Howard and I started 00:21:57.95\00:22:00.12 a weekly Sabbath School program where, hey, if you can't have 00:22:00.15\00:22:02.58 a Sabbath School at your local church, 00:22:02.62\00:22:04.32 we're going to have a Michigan option for you here. 00:22:04.35\00:22:06.02 Okay? 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.39 And we would actually do, 00:22:07.46\00:22:08.79 and we remodeled the mission program, 00:22:08.82\00:22:10.16 we'd have a global mission spotlight. 00:22:10.19\00:22:11.56 And then we'd interview 00:22:11.59\00:22:12.93 some conference director of some work 00:22:12.96\00:22:14.30 that's going on and, you know, 00:22:14.30\00:22:15.63 Pathfinders or literature or camp, 00:22:15.66\00:22:17.23 whatever the thing is. 00:22:17.27\00:22:18.60 And then we talk about 00:22:18.63\00:22:20.00 here's a personal ministry resource. 00:22:20.04\00:22:21.37 So we modeled 00:22:21.40\00:22:22.74 the little 20 minute mission program. 00:22:22.77\00:22:24.11 And then we go into the Bible study 00:22:24.14\00:22:25.87 and go through that week's lesson. 00:22:25.91\00:22:28.98 When churches began to reopen, 00:22:29.01\00:22:30.98 we got a lot of input from people being like, 00:22:31.01\00:22:33.48 whatever you do, 00:22:33.52\00:22:34.85 don't stop going over the lesson and people, 00:22:34.88\00:22:38.62 because what we would do is break it down into, 00:22:38.65\00:22:40.92 and now that the program has gotten rid of those, 00:22:40.96\00:22:42.96 because we're not trying to take 00:22:42.99\00:22:44.33 the place of Sabbath School, we're trying to be a support 00:22:44.36\00:22:46.76 to the local Sabbath School. 00:22:46.80\00:22:48.10 So every local Sabbath School is great. 00:22:48.13\00:22:50.00 I know I'm on 3ABN, but I don't think people 00:22:50.03\00:22:52.50 should be getting their church from 3ABN. 00:22:52.53\00:22:53.87 I don't think people should be getting their Sabbath School 00:22:53.90\00:22:55.27 from 3ABN or from us either, they should be 00:22:55.30\00:22:57.24 going to their local church as much as possible. 00:22:57.27\00:22:59.14 Now I understand we've got COVID restrictions. 00:22:59.17\00:23:01.01 People are different circumstances, 00:23:01.04\00:23:02.44 and we won't have all the qualifiers out there, 00:23:02.48\00:23:04.51 but ideally we would fellowship 00:23:04.55\00:23:06.58 with one another in the local church context. 00:23:06.61\00:23:09.02 Okay? So... 00:23:09.05\00:23:10.72 Let me just hit the pause button 00:23:10.79\00:23:12.22 for just a second. 00:23:12.25\00:23:13.59 That's why we air Sabbath School panel 00:23:13.66\00:23:16.83 on several different evenings. 00:23:16.86\00:23:18.96 There you go. 00:23:18.99\00:23:20.43 What we air Sabbath morning is just intended for people 00:23:20.50\00:23:25.57 who can't make it to church. 00:23:25.60\00:23:27.30 Exactly. 00:23:27.34\00:23:28.67 So again, praise the Lord for media ministries, 00:23:28.70\00:23:30.77 and I contribute to that as well. 00:23:30.81\00:23:32.41 So I want to be clear, 00:23:32.44\00:23:33.78 but the goal, at least from our department 00:23:33.84\00:23:35.48 isn't to take the place of, it's to be a support for. 00:23:35.51\00:23:38.28 And so we have a program now, 00:23:38.31\00:23:40.28 and you can find it, follow it on YouTube, 00:23:40.32\00:23:42.28 the Emanuel institute's YouTube page, 00:23:42.32\00:23:44.19 or go to michigansspm.org 00:23:44.25\00:23:47.42 That's our Michigan Conference Sabbath School 00:23:47.46\00:23:49.39 and Personal Ministries website. 00:23:49.42\00:23:51.06 And you can find the episodes of what we call Talking Points, 00:23:51.09\00:23:54.23 but it doesn't go through the Sabbath afternoon, 00:23:54.30\00:23:57.53 Sunday, Monday format. 00:23:57.57\00:23:59.47 And there's nothing wrong with those programs that do. 00:23:59.50\00:24:02.04 But what we draw out 00:24:02.07\00:24:03.61 is what are the three big takeaway points. 00:24:03.64\00:24:06.78 If I were going to be teaching this lesson this week, 00:24:06.81\00:24:09.64 and some Sabbath Schools 00:24:09.68\00:24:11.01 only have a few minutes to do it, 00:24:11.05\00:24:12.38 some have a full hour or more to do it, right? 00:24:12.41\00:24:14.58 But it's scalable, like, so I could take, 00:24:14.62\00:24:16.52 I could summarize these three points 00:24:16.55\00:24:18.12 in five minutes if I had to, 00:24:18.15\00:24:19.69 or we could spend the full hour on it. 00:24:19.72\00:24:21.42 But basically like Monday and Tuesday 00:24:21.46\00:24:23.53 seem to talk about this. 00:24:23.56\00:24:24.89 Or there was this point over here 00:24:24.93\00:24:26.26 for Tuesday and Thursday kind of brought this together, 00:24:26.29\00:24:28.30 but you're not a slave 00:24:28.33\00:24:29.86 to the seven day sequential format 00:24:29.90\00:24:33.30 because our goal isn't to plod through how many, 00:24:33.34\00:24:36.34 by the way, Sabbath School classes 00:24:36.37\00:24:38.37 you've been in 00:24:38.41\00:24:40.04 and all the discussions up front, 00:24:40.08\00:24:41.41 it goes on and on and on. 00:24:41.44\00:24:42.78 And the bell rings like, 00:24:42.81\00:24:44.15 well, we only get past Tuesday, you know? 00:24:44.18\00:24:46.48 And there was some good stuff in Thursday, right? 00:24:46.51\00:24:48.52 And so the teacher should have the role of saying, 00:24:48.55\00:24:51.42 what are the things I want to draw 00:24:51.45\00:24:52.92 out of this week's lesson 00:24:52.95\00:24:54.76 that if I have a lot of time or a little, 00:24:54.79\00:24:56.12 we're going to make sure to cover, 00:24:56.16\00:24:57.49 and that's where it's going to be quality. 00:24:57.53\00:24:58.86 And if you, and by the way if the teacher didn't hit 00:24:58.89\00:25:01.80 on your favorite point, so what? 00:25:01.83\00:25:04.80 It's okay, you studied it, 00:25:04.83\00:25:06.53 you got the blessing and you know what? 00:25:06.57\00:25:08.40 You could have a conversation with your friends and say, 00:25:08.44\00:25:10.01 hey, there was another thing in the Sabbath School lesson. 00:25:10.04\00:25:11.81 Let's talk about. Praise the Lord. 00:25:11.84\00:25:13.58 It's fodder for your own further study, 00:25:13.61\00:25:15.91 but the teachers should teach, the students should study. 00:25:15.94\00:25:19.88 There should be a dynamic engagement 00:25:19.91\00:25:22.75 of conversation back and forth, 00:25:22.78\00:25:24.12 but it should be focused on the topic at hand 00:25:24.19\00:25:27.26 and not head off into the wilderness of debate. 00:25:27.29\00:25:30.43 It seems like probably the personality of the teacher 00:25:30.46\00:25:34.30 probably would rule that. 00:25:34.36\00:25:37.43 By the way, pastor, 00:25:37.47\00:25:38.80 let me interject this real quick, Brother JD. 00:25:38.83\00:25:41.27 How many local churches 00:25:41.30\00:25:42.64 actually teach their Sabbath School teachers 00:25:42.67\00:25:44.47 how to do Sabbath School stuff? 00:25:44.51\00:25:46.11 Yeah. Almost none. 00:25:46.14\00:25:48.71 And the reason a lot of people do, 00:25:48.74\00:25:51.48 whether it's a Sabbath School format 00:25:51.51\00:25:53.01 or the style of teaching, 00:25:53.05\00:25:54.45 or the go into the lesson the way that it, 00:25:54.48\00:25:55.95 whatever it is, how did they come up with that? 00:25:55.98\00:25:58.39 Because they watched somebody else do it. 00:25:58.42\00:26:01.12 That's exactly. 00:26:01.16\00:26:02.49 You know, I used to, 00:26:02.52\00:26:03.86 we talk about training center churches a lot 00:26:03.89\00:26:05.63 in our department here because we want, you know, 00:26:05.66\00:26:08.56 church should be a school where you go and learn 00:26:08.60\00:26:11.27 how to be a missionary for Jesus, right? 00:26:11.30\00:26:13.57 And Mrs. White has this powerful quote. 00:26:13.64\00:26:15.04 She said, "Every church should be a training school 00:26:15.07\00:26:17.87 for Christian workers." 00:26:17.91\00:26:19.24 And I say amen. Amen. 00:26:19.27\00:26:21.01 And then it dawned on me. 00:26:21.04\00:26:23.18 You know, every church already is a training school, 00:26:23.21\00:26:27.35 whether we intend to or not, we teach people, 00:26:27.42\00:26:32.39 we model, we exemplify the unspoken cues 00:26:32.42\00:26:37.13 of what makes our church run 00:26:37.16\00:26:38.93 and what makes our Sabbath School operate, 00:26:38.96\00:26:41.00 how it goes, when it goes, 00:26:41.03\00:26:42.40 what time it goes, who does where, where you sit. 00:26:42.43\00:26:45.43 There's no lecture on it, but everybody learns it. 00:26:45.47\00:26:47.94 You know what I'm saying? 00:26:47.97\00:26:49.30 And the same thing happens with Sabbath School teaching, 00:26:49.34\00:26:51.04 and superintending, 00:26:51.07\00:26:52.41 and outreach or evangelism, 00:26:52.44\00:26:53.78 anything that we do in the local church, 00:26:53.84\00:26:55.18 we often just do it 00:26:55.21\00:26:57.31 because that's how the other person did it. 00:26:57.35\00:26:59.25 And they learned it from the person before. 00:26:59.28\00:27:00.95 So I think there's a lot of like, 00:27:00.98\00:27:02.88 we've created a mold, some of which is fine, 00:27:02.92\00:27:06.45 but a lot of it may be very good, 00:27:06.49\00:27:07.82 but it's done almost instinctively 00:27:07.86\00:27:11.06 instead of by conviction and by, 00:27:11.09\00:27:13.83 like I see the need for this 00:27:13.86\00:27:15.20 and we're going to do it this way. 00:27:15.23\00:27:16.67 And I would think that 00:27:16.70\00:27:18.03 that's one of the goals of Sabbath School ALIVE! 00:27:18.07\00:27:20.27 Yes, absolutely. Well, Sabbath School ALIVE! 00:27:20.34\00:27:22.60 Thank you for bringing that up 00:27:22.64\00:27:24.01 because you started A-L-I-V-E exclamation point. 00:27:24.04\00:27:26.61 And if you go to alive.adventist.org 00:27:26.68\00:27:31.08 that is the General Conferences Sabbath School ALIVE! 00:27:31.11\00:27:34.72 Program. 00:27:34.75\00:27:36.08 You can find all the resources for it there. 00:27:36.12\00:27:37.49 And this was, 00:27:37.52\00:27:38.85 this is not a Michigan conference thing. 00:27:38.89\00:27:40.22 We're just partnering 00:27:40.26\00:27:41.59 with the General Conference in this initiative. 00:27:41.62\00:27:43.53 But, and I've heard people talk about like, 00:27:43.56\00:27:45.53 ooh, that's a radical change. 00:27:45.56\00:27:46.90 I don't know if our church is ready for it. 00:27:46.93\00:27:48.23 Some people might get upset if we try. 00:27:48.26\00:27:50.23 So what is the format? 00:27:50.27\00:27:51.60 Okay, very simply, we're advocating, 00:27:51.63\00:27:55.30 encouraging people to have mission focus 00:27:55.34\00:28:00.14 with a Bible study foundation 00:28:00.21\00:28:02.54 in the format of small group fellowship. 00:28:02.58\00:28:05.48 Okay? Very simple. 00:28:05.51\00:28:06.95 That means how do you put mission back 00:28:06.98\00:28:09.25 as the focus of Sabbath School? 00:28:09.28\00:28:10.75 We have a mission program, a brief, not preliminary, 00:28:10.82\00:28:14.89 because it's not the unimportant stuff 00:28:14.92\00:28:16.26 on the side plate, 00:28:16.29\00:28:17.66 but it's essential, but it's succinct. 00:28:17.69\00:28:19.69 Okay? It gets right to the point. 00:28:19.73\00:28:21.53 Good morning, friends, here's our mission spotlight 00:28:21.56\00:28:23.87 and we're off, right? 00:28:23.90\00:28:25.23 Then you hit that 00:28:25.27\00:28:26.60 local conference or congregation. 00:28:26.63\00:28:27.97 Here's what our women's ministry 00:28:28.00\00:28:29.34 is doing right now. 00:28:29.37\00:28:30.71 Come up and give a report, right? 00:28:30.74\00:28:32.07 We hear a good testimony right in our own backyard. 00:28:32.11\00:28:34.31 Then by the way, before we close, 00:28:34.34\00:28:36.01 we need to have our own missionary movement. 00:28:36.04\00:28:37.45 Every one of us needs to be... 00:28:37.48\00:28:38.81 We want to encourage you 00:28:38.85\00:28:40.18 to distribute Great Controversy. 00:28:40.22\00:28:41.55 This is our sharing book this year, 00:28:41.58\00:28:42.92 and we're going to put as many in homes as we can, 00:28:42.95\00:28:44.72 but basically you can do that thing 00:28:44.75\00:28:46.45 in 15 minutes, right? 00:28:46.49\00:28:48.06 Just knock it out 00:28:48.09\00:28:49.52 and then move into your small groups. 00:28:49.56\00:28:52.29 Now, if every small group, by the way, 00:28:52.33\00:28:54.00 also had a mission project of their own, 00:28:54.00\00:28:55.43 they could spend just a couple of minutes 00:28:55.46\00:28:56.83 talking about that. 00:28:56.87\00:28:58.20 And then each Sabbath School group 00:28:58.23\00:28:59.57 could report in the mission program, right? 00:28:59.60\00:29:01.17 And it feeds like a funnel back and forth. 00:29:01.20\00:29:03.74 So have a mission program 00:29:03.77\00:29:05.91 integral to your Sabbath School. 00:29:05.94\00:29:07.31 Now I typically tend to see that 00:29:07.34\00:29:08.84 as the first thing you do off the bat, 00:29:08.88\00:29:10.38 but if people want to mix it up, 00:29:10.41\00:29:11.75 that's fine, but make sure that 00:29:11.78\00:29:13.11 mission is the focus of Sabbath School. 00:29:13.15\00:29:14.52 But the foundation, 00:29:14.55\00:29:15.88 the big block is always going to be 00:29:15.92\00:29:17.42 that Bible study and prayer, 00:29:17.45\00:29:19.05 that digging into the Word of God together, 00:29:19.09\00:29:21.82 and all done in the format of a small group, 00:29:21.86\00:29:24.06 dynamic, a fellowship. 00:29:24.09\00:29:25.66 And obviously this works 00:29:25.69\00:29:29.53 because our denomination is 150, 180 years old. 00:29:29.56\00:29:35.47 And it's always been mission driven. 00:29:35.50\00:29:37.91 Yes. It's always had Sabbath School. 00:29:37.94\00:29:41.14 So it might just take a little tweaking. 00:29:41.18\00:29:45.85 And honestly what we're not... 00:29:45.88\00:29:47.35 It's not some turning the tables 00:29:47.42\00:29:48.78 over radical upending of all things 00:29:48.82\00:29:51.32 you've ever known Sabbath School to be. 00:29:51.35\00:29:52.79 It's not that, it's simply realigning with 00:29:52.82\00:29:55.29 what we understand from the Bible 00:29:55.32\00:29:57.43 and the Spirit of Prophecy and from, you know, 00:29:57.46\00:29:59.49 just the practical results of Adventist history. 00:29:59.53\00:30:01.80 What we've seen work is if the Sabbath School 00:30:01.83\00:30:04.33 is focused on mission, standing on a solid foundation 00:30:04.37\00:30:08.74 of Bible study in a format that 00:30:08.77\00:30:10.67 people want to invite their friends to fellowship, 00:30:10.71\00:30:12.84 that is a winning combination. 00:30:12.87\00:30:15.51 And I believe the Lord will breathe life, 00:30:15.54\00:30:17.31 but a lot of Sabbath Schools 00:30:17.35\00:30:18.68 have jettisoned any plenary program, 00:30:18.71\00:30:21.12 any platform program at all, or if they have it, 00:30:21.15\00:30:23.85 it's just what we call superintendents' remarks. 00:30:23.89\00:30:25.79 And it's a chicken soup for the soul type of like 00:30:25.82\00:30:27.56 a little devotional reading that they came up with, 00:30:27.62\00:30:29.19 but it's a little, or they might have a specimen. 00:30:29.22\00:30:30.79 And it basically comes a tiny little miniature, 00:30:30.83\00:30:32.83 not as well done church service, right? 00:30:32.86\00:30:35.23 And there's like, 00:30:35.26\00:30:36.60 why do you even have this thing? 00:30:36.63\00:30:37.97 It's just a platform. 00:30:38.00\00:30:39.33 Well, if you've lost that mission focus, 00:30:39.37\00:30:41.20 then it just becomes, you know, 00:30:41.24\00:30:43.64 sounding gong or clanging cymbals sometime 00:30:43.67\00:30:45.71 and no wonder people. 00:30:45.74\00:30:47.11 So I understand the reason 00:30:47.14\00:30:48.84 why people wouldn't either get rid of the plenary program 00:30:48.88\00:30:52.31 or just do this one thing. 00:30:52.35\00:30:53.95 But what happens is it becomes very insular 00:30:53.98\00:30:57.55 and it's just a specialized study group for the people 00:30:57.59\00:31:02.36 who care enough to come to Sabbath School. 00:31:02.39\00:31:05.39 No, and... Go ahead. 00:31:05.43\00:31:07.30 I just was going to say, I think the problem is, 00:31:07.30\00:31:11.10 as you're talking, 00:31:11.13\00:31:12.77 it seems to me that people have lost 00:31:12.80\00:31:14.94 their spiritual passion for mission. 00:31:14.97\00:31:17.87 So all of a sudden it's sort of like, 00:31:17.91\00:31:20.74 that's the mission story. 00:31:20.78\00:31:22.11 Let's get into the Bible study where I'm going to benefit. 00:31:22.14\00:31:25.71 I think we've lost our spiritual commitment. 00:31:25.75\00:31:30.49 It's... 00:31:30.55\00:31:33.32 We've become lukewarm in that area. 00:31:33.36\00:31:34.69 Yes. 00:31:34.72\00:31:36.06 Almost like the Bible anticipated 00:31:36.09\00:31:37.49 that problem and outlined it in scripture, right? 00:31:37.53\00:31:39.89 But we have to remember that the message of the church 00:31:39.96\00:31:42.60 that we love so dear 00:31:42.63\00:31:44.43 is one side or the other side of the coin, 00:31:44.47\00:31:46.77 which is the mission of the church, 00:31:46.80\00:31:48.20 which is to share it. 00:31:48.24\00:31:50.47 This concept that I am a Seventh-day Adventist 00:31:50.54\00:31:54.04 because I hold to these beliefs 00:31:54.11\00:31:55.64 and I study it for myself that I... 00:31:55.68\00:31:57.58 Well, praise the Lord that you are in the faith, 00:31:57.61\00:31:59.58 but there's somebody else who needs your voice to go 00:31:59.61\00:32:01.75 share with them, right? 00:32:01.78\00:32:03.12 And so we become the Dead Sea 00:32:03.15\00:32:04.79 when it all flows in, but it doesn't flow out. 00:32:04.82\00:32:07.66 And a lot of times that's Sabbath School 00:32:07.69\00:32:11.16 is seen as the study group for, 00:32:11.19\00:32:13.90 you know, the dedicated saints in the church who care in, 00:32:13.93\00:32:17.33 when it's not supposed to be merely that, 00:32:17.37\00:32:19.13 of course, it's supposed to be a Bible study, 00:32:19.17\00:32:21.07 but the purpose of the study is not just to know more 00:32:21.10\00:32:24.81 or double-check or debate for strife 00:32:24.84\00:32:26.74 and, you know, discussion. 00:32:26.78\00:32:28.84 It's to grow in my faith 00:32:28.88\00:32:31.85 as I share my faith with others. 00:32:31.88\00:32:33.88 Plus you're daily involved. 00:32:33.92\00:32:36.95 Yeah. I mean, if... 00:32:36.99\00:32:40.22 If you're studying your Adult Study Bible class. 00:32:40.26\00:32:42.52 That's exactly. 00:32:42.56\00:32:43.89 I mean, daily you're involved 00:32:43.93\00:32:45.46 maybe this is a weak area over here. 00:32:45.49\00:32:47.86 Maybe you don't have the best teacher 00:32:47.93\00:32:50.00 but you are daily involved studying yourself. 00:32:50.03\00:32:54.30 Yes. 00:32:54.34\00:32:55.67 And the good news that I'm being reminded, 00:32:55.70\00:32:59.61 it's good for you. 00:32:59.64\00:33:02.34 Good for Sabbath School ALIVE! 00:33:02.38\00:33:04.38 Okay? 00:33:04.41\00:33:05.75 Being that this is a good reminder. 00:33:05.78\00:33:08.38 Maybe I forgot 00:33:08.42\00:33:09.75 what it was to be mission minded. 00:33:09.78\00:33:12.59 Got a great question right here to me. 00:33:12.62\00:33:14.82 Let's looking at a mega church. 00:33:14.86\00:33:16.36 Okay. Mega churches. 00:33:16.39\00:33:19.49 And I'm sure there's still many mega churches out. 00:33:19.53\00:33:22.96 Okay? 00:33:23.00\00:33:24.33 But they get everybody in and every, 00:33:24.37\00:33:26.50 but yet they're losing members right and left. 00:33:26.53\00:33:29.44 Are they concentrating on the right things 00:33:29.47\00:33:31.61 or what would you think on this? 00:33:31.64\00:33:34.34 Well interestingly enough, there haven't been a lot of... 00:33:34.38\00:33:37.51 I mean, I'm not exactly sure 00:33:37.55\00:33:39.11 what the borders of a mega church would be, 00:33:39.15\00:33:41.62 if it's a couple of thousand members, 00:33:41.65\00:33:43.15 10,000, because nowhere 00:33:43.18\00:33:45.19 in the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:33:45.22\00:33:46.55 that I'm aware of has one of those stadium churches 00:33:46.59\00:33:48.62 with 20, 30, 50,000 people. 00:33:48.66\00:33:51.03 But... 00:33:51.06\00:33:52.39 Let's look at a 20,000 member church 00:33:52.43\00:33:55.43 or 15,000 member church. 00:33:55.46\00:33:57.97 They're filling the church up. 00:33:58.00\00:33:59.83 Mega churches are kind of going out of vogue right now. 00:33:59.87\00:34:03.51 Okay? 00:34:03.54\00:34:04.87 And one of the reasons why, 00:34:04.91\00:34:06.24 and a lot of them, you know, I have some... 00:34:06.27\00:34:08.18 You know, have some interesting statistics 00:34:08.21\00:34:11.21 on this like, you know, 00:34:11.25\00:34:14.02 one of the most well-known was the Willow Creek 00:34:14.05\00:34:16.38 and that kind of, you know, 00:34:16.42\00:34:18.95 now there's hill song and fellowship 00:34:18.99\00:34:20.46 and community churches 00:34:20.49\00:34:21.82 and these kinds of things that are denominational, 00:34:21.86\00:34:23.93 but you wouldn't really know so much. 00:34:23.96\00:34:25.46 That's kind of a brand church, like this mega church branding. 00:34:25.49\00:34:28.40 And interestingly listen to this statement, 00:34:28.43\00:34:31.80 this is Bill Hybels, by the way, 00:34:31.83\00:34:33.84 the founder of the Willow Creek community church 00:34:33.90\00:34:36.04 in his book reveal, where are you? 00:34:36.07\00:34:38.81 It says this, much of the methodology... 00:34:38.84\00:34:41.98 Sorry, we made a mistake, okay he has this opening. 00:34:42.01\00:34:45.58 "We made a mistake, what we should have done 00:34:45.61\00:34:47.48 when people cross the line of faith 00:34:47.52\00:34:48.85 and become Christians, 00:34:48.88\00:34:50.25 we should have started telling people 00:34:50.29\00:34:51.62 and teaching people that they have to 00:34:51.65\00:34:52.99 take responsibility to become self-feeders. 00:34:53.02\00:34:56.89 We should have gotten people, we should have gotten people, 00:34:56.93\00:35:01.20 taught people how to read their Bible between services, 00:35:01.23\00:35:04.30 how to do the spiritual practice 00:35:04.33\00:35:05.83 as much more aggressively on their own. 00:35:05.87\00:35:07.64 Now we probably have 00:35:07.67\00:35:09.00 a lot of theological disagreements, 00:35:09.04\00:35:10.41 but in practical terms, 00:35:10.44\00:35:11.77 what he's saying is essentially that 00:35:11.81\00:35:13.24 they just tried to grow the church 00:35:13.27\00:35:15.51 without growing the people. 00:35:15.54\00:35:17.05 Yeah. 00:35:17.08\00:35:18.41 And, you know, the interesting thing is 00:35:18.45\00:35:20.22 I have heard in the past, 00:35:20.25\00:35:21.58 some people have actually sent somebody 00:35:21.62\00:35:26.22 from their church to go and check out, 00:35:26.25\00:35:29.22 how did they do all of this, you know? 00:35:29.26\00:35:31.09 And it's like, okay, have a coffee shop, 00:35:31.13\00:35:33.06 have a theme or have this. 00:35:33.09\00:35:35.00 And it didn't produce fruit. 00:35:35.03\00:35:38.20 It may have brought a leafy bush, 00:35:38.23\00:35:41.97 but it didn't produce. 00:35:42.00\00:35:43.37 Right. 00:35:43.41\00:35:44.74 And to be clear, that's not a pejorative term 00:35:44.77\00:35:46.11 from the outside, 00:35:46.14\00:35:47.48 looking in as a scolding reprimand. 00:35:47.51\00:35:48.84 This is from the inside, they're the one's saying, 00:35:48.88\00:35:50.31 you know what? 00:35:50.35\00:35:51.68 Again, we made a mistake. 00:35:51.71\00:35:53.05 We were looking at it like 00:35:53.08\00:35:54.42 we were just trying to draw a crowd 00:35:54.45\00:35:55.78 and get the numbers up 00:35:55.82\00:35:57.15 and to their credit that's what you want to do. 00:35:57.19\00:35:58.69 You see churches on the climb, let's see what we can grow. 00:35:58.72\00:36:01.22 But the real growth of the church 00:36:01.26\00:36:02.79 is not going to be quantitative. 00:36:02.82\00:36:04.26 It's going to be qualitative. 00:36:04.29\00:36:05.96 Right, we want to see people become more like Jesus. 00:36:05.99\00:36:08.30 And through their devotion to him 00:36:08.33\00:36:10.60 and His work, 00:36:10.67\00:36:12.07 the church will grow through their labors, right? 00:36:12.10\00:36:14.50 So we do want to see quantity growth in the church, 00:36:14.54\00:36:17.81 but we always want it to be based on 00:36:17.84\00:36:19.47 quality growth of the members. 00:36:19.51\00:36:21.78 So they have a spiritual maturity 00:36:21.81\00:36:24.08 that will draw others in. 00:36:24.15\00:36:25.48 During the first hour you mentioned something 00:36:25.51\00:36:27.32 about once learned, always learned, 00:36:27.35\00:36:29.15 the one who says, 00:36:29.18\00:36:30.52 well, I've heard this, you know, 00:36:30.59\00:36:33.46 I'm going to take something in this again, 00:36:33.49\00:36:35.42 confession is good for the soul and hard on the reputation. 00:36:35.46\00:36:41.76 We learn to teach, but we teach to learn. 00:36:41.80\00:36:48.00 Sometimes I will go through 00:36:48.04\00:36:51.27 and really get into a deep study 00:36:51.31\00:36:54.54 and you know what? 00:36:54.58\00:36:55.91 I can put together the best message 00:36:55.94\00:36:59.21 and maybe just teach it once. 00:36:59.25\00:37:02.22 And it'll be a year later 00:37:02.25\00:37:05.85 that I'm looking through something 00:37:05.89\00:37:07.39 and I find it and I'm going. 00:37:07.42\00:37:09.19 Oh, wow, that was good. 00:37:09.22\00:37:11.09 If we don't share 00:37:11.13\00:37:12.96 what you were saying about the Dead Sea. 00:37:12.99\00:37:14.96 If all we do is take in 00:37:15.00\00:37:17.60 and what God intended is, He said, 00:37:17.63\00:37:21.84 go and make it the great commission, 00:37:21.87\00:37:24.31 Matthew 28, He said, "Go make disciples, 00:37:24.34\00:37:27.91 teaching them to obey everything 00:37:27.94\00:37:31.15 that I've commanded." 00:37:31.18\00:37:32.68 So the way, you know, 00:37:32.71\00:37:34.58 when you're afraid of not knowing the answer, 00:37:34.62\00:37:38.19 I've watched this man grow so quickly 00:37:38.22\00:37:41.09 when we first came here 00:37:41.12\00:37:42.79 because he was sharing the Word with others 00:37:42.82\00:37:46.90 and it was like, 00:37:46.93\00:37:48.33 then it was cemented in his heart. 00:37:48.36\00:37:50.13 And I mean it was the same for me. 00:37:50.17\00:37:51.50 I think that's true for all of us. 00:37:51.53\00:37:53.10 Amen. 00:37:53.13\00:37:54.47 Can I give you a little piece of scripture for that? 00:37:54.50\00:37:56.27 Sure. 00:37:56.30\00:37:57.64 If you go to the Book of Hebrews Chapter 5, okay? 00:37:57.67\00:38:00.51 Now, oftentimes we kind of relegate Hebrews 00:38:00.54\00:38:03.18 as a theological book 00:38:03.21\00:38:04.58 about the high priestly ministry of Jesus, 00:38:04.61\00:38:06.15 which certainly is, but, friends, 00:38:06.18\00:38:08.65 don't forget the practical side of the Book of Hebrews. 00:38:08.68\00:38:11.52 Okay? Now I'll give you one example. 00:38:11.55\00:38:13.89 In Hebrews Chapter 5, 00:38:13.92\00:38:15.86 he's hitting some pretty deep themes 00:38:15.89\00:38:17.59 about the ministry of Jesus 00:38:17.66\00:38:19.03 and the heavenly sanctuary as the, 00:38:19.06\00:38:21.33 like a Melchizedek priesthood type, 00:38:21.36\00:38:23.37 it's deep stuff, right? 00:38:23.40\00:38:25.07 But look at how he kind of closes 00:38:25.10\00:38:26.77 that section, verse 11. 00:38:26.84\00:38:28.44 Speaking of the Jesus as a high priest 00:38:28.47\00:38:30.41 and the order of Melchizedek, he says verse 11, 00:38:30.44\00:38:33.01 "Of whom we have much to say 00:38:33.04\00:38:35.04 and hard to explain 00:38:35.08\00:38:36.61 since you have become dull of hearing." 00:38:36.64\00:38:40.05 Now, that's a pretty scathing rebuke, 00:38:40.12\00:38:42.98 but what does he mean? 00:38:43.02\00:38:44.35 Well, keep reading, verse 12, 00:38:44.39\00:38:45.89 "For though, by this time you ought to be teachers. 00:38:45.92\00:38:50.33 You need someone to teach you again, 00:38:50.36\00:38:52.49 the first principles of the Oracles of God. 00:38:52.53\00:38:54.56 And you have come to need milk and not solid food. 00:38:54.60\00:38:57.27 So in his teaching to whoever these Hebrews were, 00:38:57.33\00:38:59.57 he was saying, we've reached a ceiling here 00:38:59.60\00:39:01.74 and it's not because there's not more to say, 00:39:01.77\00:39:03.74 it's because you can't handle it. 00:39:03.77\00:39:05.11 You can't hear it. You can't, you've maxed out. 00:39:05.14\00:39:08.24 Keep reading, "For everyone," verse 13, 00:39:08.28\00:39:10.98 "who partakes only of milk, 00:39:11.01\00:39:12.35 is unskilled in the word of righteousness 00:39:12.38\00:39:14.05 for he is a babe, 00:39:14.08\00:39:15.42 but solid food belongs to those who are full age." 00:39:15.45\00:39:17.62 And here's what he means. 00:39:17.65\00:39:18.99 He says that is, 00:39:19.02\00:39:20.39 "Those who by reason of use have their senses exercise 00:39:20.42\00:39:25.39 to discern both good and evil." 00:39:25.43\00:39:26.86 He said, the problem we're having here 00:39:26.93\00:39:28.86 is we're giving good information, 00:39:28.90\00:39:30.97 good, solid theological doctrine. 00:39:31.00\00:39:33.13 But we can only go so far in your growth 00:39:33.17\00:39:34.94 because you're not putting to use 00:39:34.97\00:39:36.30 what you've already got. 00:39:36.34\00:39:38.01 And that was one of the challenges 00:39:38.04\00:39:40.08 that I had to have a message called 00:39:40.11\00:39:41.44 how to listen to a sermon, but people don't know 00:39:41.48\00:39:43.55 how to listen to spiritual counsel. 00:39:43.58\00:39:45.25 They don't know how to listen to a sermon. 00:39:45.28\00:39:46.61 So for instance, 00:39:46.65\00:39:47.98 if you were in the supermarket one day 00:39:48.02\00:39:50.92 and you had your non-Adventist, 00:39:50.99\00:39:52.89 your evangelical dyed in the wool, you know, 00:39:52.92\00:39:54.99 turn a burn Baptist friend, right? 00:39:55.02\00:39:57.16 Tenderhearted love one another. 00:39:57.23\00:39:58.56 We have different theologies, right? 00:39:58.59\00:40:01.50 And they said, you know what? 00:40:01.53\00:40:02.93 Our Sunday school teacher 00:40:02.96\00:40:04.30 is going to be out of town this week. 00:40:04.33\00:40:05.67 And I know you guys 00:40:05.70\00:40:07.04 think a little bit different than us 00:40:07.10\00:40:08.44 on this particular topic. 00:40:08.47\00:40:09.80 Would you be willing to come? So we're good friends. 00:40:09.84\00:40:11.94 So would you come to my Sunday school 00:40:11.97\00:40:14.14 and teach us what you understand the Bible 00:40:14.18\00:40:15.98 does teach about hell. 00:40:16.01\00:40:19.48 You'd say, and you know, 00:40:19.51\00:40:21.42 it's about a warning, you can't say no. 00:40:21.45\00:40:23.02 So you say like, "Ah-ah, oh, sure. 00:40:23.05\00:40:25.82 This Sunday, right?" Yeah. 00:40:25.85\00:40:27.22 And this is Friday afternoon. Right? 00:40:27.26\00:40:29.89 And you're shaking in your boots, 00:40:29.92\00:40:31.26 but you got this divine appointment, right? 00:40:31.29\00:40:33.40 Go three aisles down. 00:40:33.46\00:40:34.76 You run into your own pastor and you say, pastor, 00:40:34.83\00:40:37.40 I got to tell you, I got this opportunity. 00:40:37.43\00:40:39.97 I don't know what I'm going to say 00:40:40.00\00:40:41.34 and the pastor says, look, calm down the Lord's in it. 00:40:41.37\00:40:44.07 Tomorrow morning you know what I'm preaching on? 00:40:44.14\00:40:47.41 The good news about hell. 00:40:47.44\00:40:50.81 Time out. 00:40:50.88\00:40:52.21 How are you going to listen to tomorrow sermon? 00:40:52.25\00:40:53.95 With a whole. A whole different attitude. 00:40:53.98\00:40:57.42 Ears perked up. That's right. 00:40:57.45\00:40:58.92 Because now you have an appointment 00:40:58.95\00:41:00.36 on the other side of it. 00:41:00.39\00:41:01.72 You're going to be accountable 00:41:01.76\00:41:03.09 for what you heard in the Word of God. 00:41:03.12\00:41:04.46 So you're not, that Sabbath, 00:41:04.49\00:41:06.46 I don't know why you came church before, 00:41:06.49\00:41:07.83 but you've got a mission that Sabbath, right? 00:41:07.86\00:41:10.03 And you're not going to sit in the back. 00:41:10.07\00:41:11.40 You're not going to be distracted. 00:41:11.43\00:41:12.77 Not going to come in late. 00:41:12.80\00:41:14.14 You're not going to get caught up in this and that 00:41:14.17\00:41:15.50 and be looking on your phone. 00:41:15.54\00:41:16.87 No, you're going to sit down front, take notes, 00:41:16.91\00:41:18.24 have your Bible open and you honestly 00:41:18.27\00:41:20.68 don't even care if the speaker's interesting. 00:41:20.74\00:41:23.11 Because you're not there for style, 00:41:23.14\00:41:24.48 you're there for substance. 00:41:24.51\00:41:26.05 I need content. I need meat. 00:41:26.08\00:41:27.62 Because I'm about to feed some people 00:41:27.65\00:41:28.98 and I want to make sure. 00:41:29.02\00:41:30.35 And we have to, and Paul was running into this 00:41:30.39\00:41:32.69 in this day saying, look, there's depth here. 00:41:32.72\00:41:36.26 It's not just the trite story of Jesus. 00:41:36.29\00:41:37.89 You've heard a little pieces and parts. 00:41:37.93\00:41:39.26 There's a richness of His heavenly ministry, 00:41:39.29\00:41:41.33 he's trying to convey here, 00:41:41.36\00:41:42.86 but we've reached a ceiling with you guys 00:41:42.90\00:41:44.60 because you're not putting to use 00:41:44.63\00:41:46.23 what you've already got. 00:41:46.27\00:41:48.00 And so we are having to go back over and back over. 00:41:48.04\00:41:51.04 Friends, I see this in Sabbath School all the time. 00:41:51.07\00:41:53.41 We keep going over the same things 00:41:53.44\00:41:54.84 over and over and people don't seem to grow. 00:41:54.88\00:41:57.08 And I don't think 00:41:57.11\00:41:58.45 it's because they've run out of material. 00:41:58.48\00:42:01.18 I think it's a lot of it has to do with the fact that 00:42:01.22\00:42:03.49 we're not putting into practice either 00:42:03.52\00:42:05.25 on our own life reforms or in our witnessing to others, 00:42:05.29\00:42:08.32 the things that we've been blessed with. 00:42:08.36\00:42:10.46 And so it just kind of finds the ceiling and that's it. 00:42:10.53\00:42:14.10 We need, you know, we're running out 00:42:14.10\00:42:17.23 That's good. Great. 00:42:17.27\00:42:19.63 All right. 00:42:19.67\00:42:21.00 So where can people get resources 00:42:21.04\00:42:25.11 to teach those who are going to teach 00:42:25.14\00:42:28.18 the Sabbath School? 00:42:28.21\00:42:29.54 That is a great one. Okay. 00:42:29.58\00:42:31.21 Now I'll be, to be clear that there's at least two websites 00:42:31.25\00:42:35.32 that I want to talk to you about. 00:42:35.35\00:42:36.69 Okay? 00:42:36.75\00:42:38.09 The first one was we already met, 00:42:38.12\00:42:39.45 we've mentioned both 00:42:39.49\00:42:40.82 and let's put them together in this. 00:42:40.86\00:42:42.19 The General Conferences Sabbath School resource page 00:42:42.22\00:42:45.96 for the ALIVE! 00:42:45.99\00:42:47.36 Initiative is the alive.adventist.org 00:42:47.40\00:42:52.07 alive.adventist.org 00:42:52.10\00:42:58.07 That's exactly right. 00:42:58.11\00:42:59.71 That website is going to talk about 00:42:59.74\00:43:01.24 those three main features of Sabbath School, 00:43:01.28\00:43:04.38 the Bible study and prayer, the mission focus 00:43:04.41\00:43:07.12 and the format of small group dynamic fellowship. 00:43:07.15\00:43:09.28 Okay? 00:43:09.32\00:43:10.69 And they're going to give you some suggestions. 00:43:10.72\00:43:12.05 Explain that, wait, pause. 00:43:12.09\00:43:13.42 We've said that, 00:43:13.46\00:43:14.79 we've used that term several times 00:43:14.82\00:43:16.16 that the small group dynamic fellowship, 00:43:16.19\00:43:19.56 explain to people 00:43:19.59\00:43:22.10 why that is biblical and why, 00:43:22.13\00:43:24.27 what you're saying when you use that term. 00:43:24.30\00:43:27.10 Let's go back to Acts Chapter 2. 00:43:27.14\00:43:28.74 Okay? 00:43:28.77\00:43:30.11 On the day of Pentecost, 00:43:30.17\00:43:31.51 in fact, I should say after the day of Pentecost, 00:43:31.54\00:43:32.91 you know, the day of Pentecost, 00:43:32.94\00:43:34.28 Peter preaches a powerful sermon, right? 00:43:34.31\00:43:36.21 And he's, by the way, preaching present truth. 00:43:36.24\00:43:39.68 He was not just preaching that Jesus was born 00:43:39.71\00:43:41.92 or that he just lived a good life 00:43:41.95\00:43:43.45 or even that He died on the cross. 00:43:43.49\00:43:45.22 He talked about His resurrection, 00:43:45.25\00:43:46.59 His ascension to heaven 00:43:46.62\00:43:47.96 and Him sitting at the right hand of God. 00:43:47.99\00:43:49.82 I mean, there's powerful stuff. 00:43:49.86\00:43:51.63 Bible prophecy, present truth. 00:43:51.66\00:43:53.46 Peter was an Adventist anyway, 00:43:53.50\00:43:55.83 But he gets there and he, 00:43:55.86\00:43:57.63 and after they gladly received his word 00:43:57.67\00:44:00.04 in verse 41, 3,000 were baptized and notice, 00:44:00.07\00:44:03.27 it says by the way, added to them, 00:44:03.30\00:44:05.64 not just added to Jesus in a nebulous vague way, 00:44:05.67\00:44:07.91 but added to the church, right? 00:44:07.94\00:44:10.75 What happens after that? 00:44:10.78\00:44:12.11 Verse 46, "So continuing," 00:44:12.15\00:44:14.48 what's the word in your Bible say next? 00:44:14.52\00:44:15.85 Steadfastly. 00:44:15.88\00:44:17.22 "Steadfastly," 00:44:17.29\00:44:18.62 I have the New King James Version 00:44:18.65\00:44:19.99 that says daily. 00:44:20.02\00:44:21.36 That means ongoing, regularly. 00:44:21.39\00:44:22.76 Verse 46. 00:44:22.79\00:44:24.13 "So continuing daily with one accord in the temple." 00:44:24.16\00:44:27.50 Now... 00:44:27.50\00:44:28.83 What verse because I'm on Chapter 2. 00:44:28.86\00:44:30.20 Acts 2:46. 00:44:30.23\00:44:32.37 Yeah, mine says daily too. Okay. 00:44:32.40\00:44:34.00 I was like, I don't know that version, 00:44:34.04\00:44:35.37 but I'm going to go with the one I got. 00:44:35.40\00:44:36.77 Okay. So continuing daily, time out. 00:44:36.81\00:44:38.71 What does daily mean? It means... 00:44:38.74\00:44:42.21 Every day. Every day, right? 00:44:42.24\00:44:43.91 Or at least throughout the week on days, 00:44:43.95\00:44:46.05 it does not just say they continued weekly. 00:44:46.08\00:44:50.09 How many things, how many times 00:44:50.15\00:44:51.65 do we assume that 00:44:51.69\00:44:53.02 everything that church does is weekly? 00:44:53.05\00:44:56.59 When the reality is we need a faith community, 00:44:56.62\00:45:00.93 that's midweek, that calls and checks on each other, 00:45:00.96\00:45:03.87 that studies together, that prays together, 00:45:03.90\00:45:05.37 that encourages one another. 00:45:05.40\00:45:06.77 That studies regularly daily, right? 00:45:06.84\00:45:10.04 So the life of the church 00:45:10.11\00:45:11.44 wasn't just a weekly round of services they went through. 00:45:11.47\00:45:14.71 It says they continue daily with one accord, where? 00:45:14.74\00:45:17.28 In the temple, so they would come to church 00:45:17.35\00:45:19.41 and it was the center of their life, 00:45:19.45\00:45:20.92 their faith was, right? 00:45:20.95\00:45:22.55 And breaking bread from house to house. 00:45:22.58\00:45:25.29 So notice again, there's the nod to the intimacy 00:45:25.32\00:45:28.12 and the closeness of that dynamic, right? 00:45:28.16\00:45:30.93 Which by the way, if you want a biblical basis 00:45:30.96\00:45:32.49 for small groups, 00:45:32.53\00:45:33.90 you can go way back in the Old Testament. 00:45:33.93\00:45:35.56 I can't tell you how many times 00:45:35.60\00:45:37.17 some church growth expert has gotten up and said, 00:45:37.23\00:45:39.17 "I've got this grand new idea. 00:45:39.20\00:45:40.70 It's called small groups." Right? 00:45:40.74\00:45:43.20 Well, friends, you know, 00:45:43.24\00:45:44.61 this goes all the way back to Moses 00:45:44.64\00:45:46.14 leading the children of Israel. 00:45:46.17\00:45:47.54 And the Lord says, you know, 00:45:47.58\00:45:48.91 why are they all standing before you delegate, 00:45:48.94\00:45:50.75 you know, break them down into groups of 00:45:50.81\00:45:52.41 thousands, hundreds, fifties, and tens, right? 00:45:52.45\00:45:55.12 Why would we have leader? 00:45:55.15\00:45:56.52 So that you can, if you miss a week 00:45:56.55\00:46:00.09 in a 200 member church, 00:46:00.12\00:46:02.06 a lot of times people don't even notice, 00:46:02.09\00:46:03.96 but you miss a group... 00:46:03.99\00:46:05.33 If you have eight people around a table 00:46:05.36\00:46:07.36 and you're gone once they know, 00:46:07.40\00:46:10.17 and that it's not like a judging, 00:46:10.20\00:46:11.53 where were, they're concerned. 00:46:11.57\00:46:13.67 You're probably going to get a phone call 00:46:13.74\00:46:15.17 or a text message or an email 00:46:15.20\00:46:16.74 or a card or some sort of like, "Hey, we missed you," 00:46:16.81\00:46:19.04 or when you do come back, hey, praise the Lord. 00:46:19.07\00:46:20.68 We're worrying about you. Are you okay? 00:46:20.71\00:46:22.04 Did you get the COVID or, 00:46:22.08\00:46:23.45 you know, what's wrong with you? 00:46:23.48\00:46:24.81 And there's a sweetness to that fellowship 00:46:24.85\00:46:27.68 that's necessary in the Christian life, right? 00:46:27.72\00:46:30.42 And that's what you see in the Bible. 00:46:30.49\00:46:31.82 Again, in the Old Testament, in the New Testament, 00:46:31.85\00:46:34.49 breaking bread from house to house, 00:46:34.52\00:46:35.86 they ate their food with gladness 00:46:35.89\00:46:37.23 and simplicity of heart, 00:46:37.26\00:46:38.59 praising God and having favor with all the people. 00:46:38.63\00:46:41.13 And what was the result? The Lord added. 00:46:41.16\00:46:42.80 The Lord added to the church how often? 00:46:42.83\00:46:44.93 Daily, those who were being saved. 00:46:44.97\00:46:48.14 So through there, and it didn't say, 00:46:48.17\00:46:49.97 oh, because Peter just kept preaching 00:46:50.01\00:46:51.37 that Pentecost sermon every day. 00:46:51.41\00:46:53.17 He didn't stand up and make, 00:46:53.21\00:46:54.54 well, maybe he did, we don't know. 00:46:54.58\00:46:55.91 But clearly the implication of these passages is that 00:46:55.94\00:46:58.55 the members themselves were so in love with the Lord, 00:46:58.58\00:47:02.65 they were so committed to His Word. 00:47:02.68\00:47:04.95 And they were so tied together in bonds of fellowship, 00:47:04.99\00:47:08.12 that it was a winsome witness to the world 00:47:08.16\00:47:10.76 that you've got something I want 00:47:10.79\00:47:12.76 and they would share their faith. 00:47:12.79\00:47:14.20 They would do it in this, then that dynamic 00:47:14.23\00:47:16.43 where you would notice if you weren't there. 00:47:16.46\00:47:19.47 Friends, I think 00:47:19.50\00:47:20.84 that's what Sabbath School should be. 00:47:20.87\00:47:22.84 That we need to put the good stuff back 00:47:22.87\00:47:24.21 in Sabbath School, 00:47:24.24\00:47:25.57 make it a wonderful, rich, vibrant, 00:47:25.61\00:47:26.98 dynamic experience 00:47:27.01\00:47:28.74 where we can grow in our faith, 00:47:28.78\00:47:30.35 where we can hear inspiring mission stories, 00:47:30.38\00:47:32.68 where we can build each other up. 00:47:32.71\00:47:36.05 And if you miss Sabbath School, you missed something. 00:47:36.08\00:47:39.02 But let's talk about, because you know, 00:47:39.05\00:47:41.59 people are sitting here, 00:47:41.62\00:47:42.96 we're talking about, say a 300 member church. 00:47:42.99\00:47:45.93 And if we're starting with Sabbath School, 00:47:45.96\00:47:47.93 we're not talking about all 300 people 00:47:47.96\00:47:51.63 being in the same class, 00:47:51.67\00:47:53.10 because most churches will have five or six different classes. 00:47:53.13\00:47:57.57 You can go to a study where maybe the personality 00:47:57.61\00:48:02.34 of the class fixtures, 00:48:02.38\00:48:04.31 but one thing is, I've seen people 00:48:04.35\00:48:07.48 come in to church as visitors 00:48:07.55\00:48:11.39 and they arrive early 00:48:11.42\00:48:12.75 because they've seen something on the sign. 00:48:12.79\00:48:15.06 And then the Sabbath School superintendent says, okay, 00:48:15.09\00:48:18.89 we're going to divide into our classes 00:48:18.93\00:48:20.76 and go to Sabbath School now. 00:48:20.83\00:48:22.60 And there they sit, like, where do I go? 00:48:22.63\00:48:25.87 Let's talk about what can we do if we start inviting people? 00:48:25.90\00:48:31.21 Yes, we have to start thinking like a visitor. 00:48:31.24\00:48:34.68 A lot of times we don't expect 00:48:34.71\00:48:37.18 any non-Adventist to ever come to Sabbath School. 00:48:37.25\00:48:40.25 So we're having inside baseball, you know, 00:48:40.32\00:48:43.69 isolated jargon and, nomenclature, you know, 00:48:43.72\00:48:46.42 abbreviations for stuff. 00:48:46.45\00:48:47.79 People don't know what, you know, 00:48:47.82\00:48:49.46 and we just kind of rattled it off. 00:48:49.49\00:48:51.63 And we assume everybody knows, for instance, 00:48:51.66\00:48:54.20 things that we're comfortable with, 00:48:54.20\00:48:55.53 we don't think we have to teach over and over. 00:48:55.56\00:48:56.93 I remember we're coming to the Michigan Conference. 00:48:56.97\00:48:58.67 Everybody knows where camp meeting is held. 00:48:58.70\00:49:01.20 Well, I didn't know where camp meeting was held. 00:49:01.24\00:49:02.94 And so we looked everywhere 00:49:02.97\00:49:04.34 for the address of where camp meeting was 00:49:04.37\00:49:05.71 and it was kind of a known thing, right? 00:49:05.74\00:49:07.68 And, we do that sometimes with church. 00:49:07.71\00:49:09.91 We don't know how our churches look, 00:49:09.94\00:49:12.95 how our churches feel, how our churches smell, 00:49:12.98\00:49:15.45 how our churches are to someone who isn't us. 00:49:15.48\00:49:20.69 But when we walk in, we talk about, 00:49:20.72\00:49:22.06 now it's time to divide 00:49:22.09\00:49:23.46 into our Sabbath School divisions. 00:49:23.49\00:49:25.13 What does that mean? Right. 00:49:25.16\00:49:26.73 We should explain things. 00:49:26.76\00:49:28.13 We should make it simple formatted 00:49:28.16\00:49:29.70 and clearly instructed on the off chance 00:49:29.73\00:49:33.00 that somebody 00:49:33.03\00:49:34.37 who's not one of us comes in, right? 00:49:34.40\00:49:36.14 And that create a welcoming visitor 00:49:36.17\00:49:38.01 friendly environment to be clear that 00:49:38.04\00:49:40.08 does not mean water down the doctrine 00:49:40.11\00:49:42.14 or ramp up the entertainment. 00:49:42.18\00:49:43.85 It means to make it 00:49:43.88\00:49:45.21 intensely interesting by clarity, 00:49:45.25\00:49:47.98 succinct, clear, a transition, say, all right, 00:49:48.02\00:49:51.65 now we're going to hear a mission story 00:49:51.69\00:49:53.02 from around the world. 00:49:53.05\00:49:54.39 Boom. They know what that means. 00:49:54.42\00:49:55.76 And now it's time to get into our study classes 00:49:55.79\00:49:57.63 to go over this week's lesson. 00:49:57.66\00:49:59.13 It's a wonderful topic this week. 00:49:59.16\00:50:01.13 And now there's a group that meets here. 00:50:01.16\00:50:02.63 There's a group there. 00:50:02.66\00:50:04.03 And if we have any visitors, 00:50:04.07\00:50:05.40 we'd like to invite you to any one of those or, 00:50:05.43\00:50:06.77 you know, make, give them 00:50:06.80\00:50:08.14 clear instructions of what to say. 00:50:08.17\00:50:10.17 And it's very helpful. 00:50:10.21\00:50:11.54 So we should think 00:50:11.57\00:50:12.91 like a visitor in all of the things 00:50:12.94\00:50:14.28 we do as a church more than we do. 00:50:14.31\00:50:16.41 Now, let's bring in personal ministries. 00:50:16.44\00:50:19.31 We've got people they're coming 00:50:19.35\00:50:20.68 to Sabbath School and everything. 00:50:20.72\00:50:22.05 How do you bring 00:50:22.08\00:50:23.45 in the personal ministries into this 00:50:23.49\00:50:24.95 or what should we do? 00:50:24.99\00:50:26.86 And you've kind of covered it, 00:50:26.92\00:50:28.39 but be a little bit more specific? 00:50:28.42\00:50:29.76 Okay. 00:50:29.79\00:50:31.13 I believe that again, going back to that 00:50:31.16\00:50:32.56 missionary mindset that it concludes with, 00:50:32.59\00:50:36.36 we haven't done a mission program. 00:50:36.40\00:50:37.73 And if we've given an appeal 00:50:37.77\00:50:39.10 for everyone to be a missionary, 00:50:39.13\00:50:40.47 so we should be training them in practical 00:50:40.50\00:50:42.97 and I mean just short little three, 00:50:43.00\00:50:44.64 five minute blurbs, 00:50:44.67\00:50:46.01 like here's a tool you can use this week. 00:50:46.04\00:50:48.24 I would challenge you to go out and distribute this, 00:50:48.28\00:50:50.18 or start a conversation like this. 00:50:50.21\00:50:52.25 Or if you're looking to give a Bible study 00:50:52.28\00:50:54.65 with someone and you don't know 00:50:54.68\00:50:56.02 how to do it, what are some ways 00:50:56.05\00:50:57.42 you can go find a Bible study this week 00:50:57.45\00:50:59.52 and give that kind of practical instruction 00:50:59.55\00:51:01.66 in the Sabbath School, 00:51:01.69\00:51:03.02 so that mission stories aren't just what happens 00:51:03.06\00:51:05.23 over there or what we do corporately, 00:51:05.26\00:51:07.50 but that every individual can have an opportunity 00:51:07.50\00:51:09.60 to be a missionary for Jesus, right? 00:51:09.63\00:51:11.03 And so we should give the resources, the inspiration, 00:51:11.07\00:51:14.24 we should give the encouragement 00:51:14.27\00:51:15.60 and the practical guidance 00:51:15.64\00:51:16.97 for how people can be a missionary. 00:51:17.01\00:51:18.94 So that's the one we can do it corporately. 00:51:18.97\00:51:20.94 Now I will say coming back to your point. 00:51:20.98\00:51:22.88 If you had a 300 member church, 00:51:22.91\00:51:24.25 I'd be delighted if all 300 people 00:51:24.28\00:51:25.61 did come to Sabbath School, number one, 00:51:25.65\00:51:27.65 and for at least a few minutes would at least 00:51:27.68\00:51:30.45 watch the same mission program and talk. 00:51:30.49\00:51:32.32 But then when we divide up into our groups, 00:51:32.35\00:51:34.12 that's where the smaller format dynamic comes in. 00:51:34.16\00:51:37.09 And that's where 00:51:37.13\00:51:38.46 the Bible study really, you know, 00:51:38.49\00:51:39.83 starts firing on all pistons. 00:51:39.86\00:51:41.60 So I would make sure that 00:51:41.63\00:51:43.90 the mission always points down 00:51:43.93\00:51:46.77 like a funnel to here am I, send me, giving them practical, 00:51:46.80\00:51:51.17 encouraging counsel that 00:51:51.21\00:51:52.64 they can put to use for the Lord. 00:51:52.67\00:51:54.21 Also in those small groups, 00:51:54.24\00:51:56.48 each of those should have a mission project of its own. 00:51:56.51\00:51:59.85 Hopefully not just something overseas that 00:51:59.88\00:52:03.05 they can fund, 00:52:03.08\00:52:04.42 but something right in their neighborhood that 00:52:04.45\00:52:06.05 they can hands-on participate with 00:52:06.09\00:52:08.16 or they can contribute to in some way in their own field. 00:52:08.19\00:52:11.56 So when it's their turn up on the mission spotlight, 00:52:11.59\00:52:14.83 they've got something to say 00:52:14.83\00:52:16.16 of activity that's happening within the church family. 00:52:16.20\00:52:19.73 And so I think there's a lot of ways that 00:52:19.77\00:52:21.20 the Sabbath School teacher, 00:52:21.24\00:52:22.57 the Sabbath School superintendent, 00:52:22.60\00:52:23.97 the Sabbath School leadership team 00:52:24.01\00:52:25.34 can intentionally move Sabbath School 00:52:25.37\00:52:29.38 towards a mission focus that 00:52:29.41\00:52:31.08 it was supposed to have all along, 00:52:31.11\00:52:32.55 but has grown dormant and far too many instances. 00:52:32.58\00:52:35.28 Okay. 00:53:41.72\00:53:43.05 Come up with ideas to help us along 00:53:43.08\00:53:44.42 and make sure 00:53:44.45\00:53:45.79 there's a personal ministries' leaders, 00:53:45.82\00:53:47.16 to make sure we got the resources we need. 00:53:47.19\00:53:48.52 And you start looking at Sabbath School 00:53:48.56\00:53:49.89 as really the living heartbeat of the church 00:53:49.92\00:53:53.80 that the lay members can all be a part of. 00:53:53.86\00:53:56.80 And that vitality has so often languished, 00:53:56.83\00:54:01.77 I think because we've lost the mission focused. 00:54:01.80\00:54:04.67 The superintendent is isolated, 00:54:04.71\00:54:06.37 the poor brother or sister 00:54:06.41\00:54:08.01 is probably the only one doing it. 00:54:08.04\00:54:09.38 And they don't know exactly what to do 00:54:09.41\00:54:10.75 and then the teacher. 00:54:10.78\00:54:12.11 And so it kind of devolves into a wrote form 00:54:12.15\00:54:15.45 that just gets repeated as a hollow ceremony. 00:54:15.48\00:54:17.99 Not that there's not a blessing in that too. 00:54:18.02\00:54:20.06 I want to be clear. 00:54:20.09\00:54:21.42 I'm not trying to throw 00:54:21.46\00:54:22.79 all Sabbath Schools under the bus. 00:54:22.82\00:54:24.16 A lot of people are doing the best 00:54:24.19\00:54:25.53 they can with the ideas they have. 00:54:25.56\00:54:26.90 But the goal of Sabbath School is to be 00:54:26.93\00:54:29.40 a living dynamic organism, 00:54:29.43\00:54:31.77 truly the body of Christ to do His work. 00:54:31.80\00:54:35.14 So while we want edification 00:54:35.17\00:54:36.50 through a good Bible study, 00:54:36.54\00:54:37.87 we need those other elements 00:54:37.91\00:54:39.24 of practical instruction 00:54:39.27\00:54:40.78 so that we can be more robust and complete the mission. 00:54:40.84\00:54:43.41 And I think part of what we all need to do 00:54:43.45\00:54:47.88 and just touch on this is we need to pray 00:54:47.92\00:54:50.99 for a change of heart. 00:54:51.02\00:54:52.35 I mean, we need much prayer about this. 00:54:52.39\00:54:54.89 Absolutely, I mean, in practical terms, 00:54:54.92\00:54:58.23 stop treating Sabbath School, 00:54:58.26\00:54:59.59 like a preliminary, show up to everything 00:54:59.63\00:55:03.47 that happens in your local church. 00:55:03.50\00:55:05.77 Invite people like 00:55:05.80\00:55:08.04 put the good stuff in Sabbath School 00:55:08.07\00:55:10.61 and expect people to be there. 00:55:10.64\00:55:12.04 And if you missed it, you missed something, right?
