Amen. 00:05:14.08\00:05:16.48 Because of what You are going to do in our hearts and lives. 00:05:16.51\00:05:21.22 We give you this time, we give You ourselves 00:05:21.25\00:05:23.85 and we thank You in Jesus' name. 00:05:23.89\00:05:26.45 Amen. Amen. 00:05:26.49\00:05:27.92 Thank you so much. 00:05:27.96\00:05:30.69 Oxford's online dictionary. 00:05:30.73\00:05:32.73 I just wanna go right there. 00:05:32.76\00:05:34.10 Let's define what worship is 00:05:34.13\00:05:36.00 from kind of a secular perspective. 00:05:36.03\00:05:38.03 That's always interesting to know 00:05:38.07\00:05:39.77 because we know the Bible is very clear 00:05:39.80\00:05:41.77 on what worship is and we're gonna talk a lot about that, 00:05:41.80\00:05:44.34 but I found this to be very interesting, 00:05:44.37\00:05:45.74 very quick, very simple, very easy. 00:05:45.77\00:05:47.64 Oxford online dictionary says that 00:05:47.68\00:05:49.71 "Worship is the feeling or expression 00:05:49.74\00:05:53.05 of reverends and adoration for a deity." 00:05:53.08\00:05:57.32 That's the general kind of secular definition. 00:05:57.35\00:05:59.92 And I think that there's a lot of accuracy 00:05:59.95\00:06:02.02 in that definition to them for the most part. 00:06:02.06\00:06:04.03 But I want to start just kind of, 00:06:04.06\00:06:05.39 let's start with the Brother Greg 00:06:05.43\00:06:06.80 and Sister Jill here. 00:06:06.83\00:06:08.56 What is your concept of worship? 00:06:08.60\00:06:11.03 What is worship to you? 00:06:11.07\00:06:13.17 Yeah, that's great. That's a great question. 00:06:13.20\00:06:14.54 You know what first comes to mind? 00:06:14.57\00:06:16.07 Well, three things, one would be family worship 00:06:16.10\00:06:18.87 as in at home. 00:06:18.91\00:06:20.24 When I think of worship, 00:06:20.28\00:06:21.61 I'm thinking, okay, family worship. 00:06:21.64\00:06:22.98 I grew up, I was blessed to have a family 00:06:23.01\00:06:24.35 that had family worship. 00:06:24.38\00:06:25.71 I also think of worship as in going to church. 00:06:25.75\00:06:28.72 You know, my parents very much took us to church. 00:06:28.75\00:06:30.25 So I think of like a worship center, a sanctuary, 00:06:30.29\00:06:33.36 but then I also think of worship as a one-on-one. 00:06:33.39\00:06:36.02 My parents were very strong with that. 00:06:36.06\00:06:37.53 Like, okay, son, make sure 00:06:37.56\00:06:38.89 you have your own time of worship. 00:06:38.93\00:06:40.26 So that's when I think of worship. 00:06:40.30\00:06:41.63 When you ask that question, 00:06:41.66\00:06:43.00 that's what comes to mind, those three. 00:06:43.03\00:06:44.37 That's awesome. Praise the Lord. 00:06:44.40\00:06:45.73 That's important. And worshiping the Lord. 00:06:45.77\00:06:47.10 That's right. 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.47 'Cause you know what I talk about. 00:06:48.50\00:06:49.84 Okay, there are other things that you can worship, you know, 00:06:49.87\00:06:51.21 money, you know, sports figures or other things, 00:06:51.24\00:06:53.58 but remember to keep, you know, God number one. 00:06:53.61\00:06:55.41 Absolutely wonderful. Jill? 00:06:55.44\00:06:57.38 I think of Romans 12, when I think of worship, 00:06:57.41\00:06:59.75 that's where my mind goes. 00:06:59.78\00:07:01.52 So if we could go Romans 12. Yeah, absolutely. 00:07:01.55\00:07:03.59 Romans 12:1. 00:07:03.62\00:07:05.55 Yeah, that's beautiful. I love this. 00:07:05.59\00:07:08.16 "I beseech you therefore brethren... 00:07:08.19\00:07:11.16 by the mercies of God 00:07:11.19\00:07:12.53 that you present your bodies a living sacrifice or in Greek, 00:07:12.56\00:07:16.13 it could be offering. 00:07:16.16\00:07:17.70 So wait a minute, we're supposed to sacrifice. 00:07:17.73\00:07:19.73 We're supposed to be an offering, a living offering, 00:07:19.77\00:07:22.64 holy, that word means set apart, adios, set apart. 00:07:22.67\00:07:27.51 Holy acceptable to God, 00:07:27.54\00:07:29.38 which is your reasonable service 00:07:29.41\00:07:31.61 or which you could translate, 00:07:31.65\00:07:33.11 which is your spiritual act of worship. 00:07:33.15\00:07:37.02 So when I think of worship, I think of surrender. 00:07:37.05\00:07:41.99 It's about me coming before God with the offering 00:07:42.02\00:07:46.56 of myself and saying, "God, all I have, 00:07:46.59\00:07:50.60 everything I have, everything I am is Yours. 00:07:50.63\00:07:54.27 And I'm not holding on to some other idol 00:07:54.30\00:07:57.11 that maybe wants to come between me and God 00:07:57.14\00:07:58.87 or I'm not holding on to something else. 00:07:58.91\00:08:00.58 God, I am yours. 00:08:00.61\00:08:02.64 Make me holy. 00:08:02.68\00:08:04.01 God, as I give myself to You, 00:08:04.05\00:08:07.55 would You work Your character in my life? 00:08:07.58\00:08:10.32 That's worship to me. Wow. 00:08:10.35\00:08:11.99 Is that surrender to God. 00:08:12.02\00:08:15.32 A quote, I just yesterday found this is sometimes 00:08:15.36\00:08:19.36 you have to lay your dream down to pick up God's best. 00:08:19.39\00:08:22.60 Wow. 00:08:22.63\00:08:23.97 And to me, that's worship. Yes. 00:08:24.00\00:08:25.33 You lay down what you think you want, 00:08:25.37\00:08:27.64 what you think your life is all about. 00:08:27.67\00:08:29.64 This spiritual act of worship, 00:08:29.67\00:08:31.71 giving it to God and picking up what's His best. 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.64 Wow. That is so awesome. 00:08:34.68\00:08:36.28 What He has for us is incredible. 00:08:36.31\00:08:39.21 So that's, to me worship is allowing God 00:08:39.25\00:08:43.85 is that surrender and allowing Him to come in. 00:08:43.89\00:08:46.09 That is beautiful. 00:08:46.12\00:08:47.46 As you were saying that, I thought to myself, 00:08:47.49\00:08:49.59 that picture of Christ in Gethsemane came to my mind, 00:08:49.62\00:08:52.86 you know, nevertheless, not My will, but Your be done. 00:08:52.89\00:08:56.56 What an awesome scene of worship there, right? 00:08:56.60\00:08:58.67 That's awesome. 00:08:58.70\00:09:00.04 Dakota, what's your concept, your idea? 00:09:00.07\00:09:03.00 What is worship to you? 00:09:03.04\00:09:04.37 So worship to me when I first initially saw 00:09:04.41\00:09:07.61 the question for this study, what is worship? 00:09:07.64\00:09:10.41 My first initial thought went to, you know, 00:09:10.45\00:09:13.82 to be completely in awe and in adoration of God. 00:09:13.85\00:09:16.58 And it's funny because the adoration 00:09:16.62\00:09:17.95 is the same word that they used 00:09:17.99\00:09:19.72 in the dictionary there that you looked up. 00:09:19.75\00:09:21.69 But what's interesting though, too, is, you know, 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.46 when I was looking into the Old Testament 00:09:23.49\00:09:25.83 and New Testament terms of worship, 00:09:25.86\00:09:28.20 I found something very beautiful 00:09:28.23\00:09:29.73 that I could relate to every single day. 00:09:29.76\00:09:32.37 And the Old Testament definition 00:09:32.40\00:09:34.24 or Old Testament word for worship is shachah, 00:09:34.27\00:09:37.07 which is very interesting word. 00:09:37.11\00:09:39.54 It's a Hebrew, 00:09:39.57\00:09:41.08 but it means to prostrate oneself 00:09:41.11\00:09:43.28 or to put your nose to the ground. 00:09:43.31\00:09:45.11 That's good. 00:09:45.15\00:09:46.48 And so literally like it's a like complete awe 00:09:46.51\00:09:49.72 and realizing like, if we were before 00:09:49.75\00:09:51.25 the presence of God right now, how would we act? 00:09:51.29\00:09:52.85 Yeah. Right. 00:09:52.89\00:09:54.22 We would just be like, boom, you know? 00:09:54.26\00:09:56.69 And then the New Testament where it came to mind 00:09:56.73\00:09:58.76 and this one was a really one that I could relate to. 00:09:58.79\00:10:01.20 And when I said being in adoration of God 00:10:01.23\00:10:04.40 is the New Testament word is proskuneo. 00:10:04.43\00:10:06.50 And that means very interesting. 00:10:06.53\00:10:08.10 Listen to this, to kiss like a dog 00:10:08.14\00:10:11.04 licking his master's hand. 00:10:11.07\00:10:13.11 Wow. 00:10:13.14\00:10:14.48 Now I have a golden retriever. 00:10:14.51\00:10:15.94 All right? 00:10:15.98\00:10:17.31 And I love my golden retriever. 00:10:17.35\00:10:18.68 Her name is honey, but I call her honey bun. 00:10:18.71\00:10:20.05 Okay. 00:10:20.08\00:10:21.42 And every single morning of my life. 00:10:21.45\00:10:25.45 And I'm sure many of the viewer's here 00:10:25.49\00:10:26.89 can probably relate. 00:10:26.92\00:10:28.26 Every single morning, if you have a pet, 00:10:28.29\00:10:29.82 dog especially. 00:10:29.86\00:10:31.59 She comes to me and wants to wake me up 00:10:31.63\00:10:34.76 by the bedside of our RV, 00:10:34.80\00:10:36.83 you know, where our bed is in our RV. 00:10:36.87\00:10:38.33 She wants to come 00:10:38.37\00:10:39.70 and she'll want to link my hands. 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.04 And even if I raise her from the chair, 00:10:42.07\00:10:44.34 she just wants to lick my hands. 00:10:44.37\00:10:45.71 She wants to be there. 00:10:45.74\00:10:47.34 And I love that, to kiss 00:10:47.38\00:10:49.78 like a dog licking his master's hands. 00:10:49.81\00:10:51.71 And that means to reverence and adore. 00:10:51.75\00:10:54.05 And I just, when I saw that, I thought, you know, 00:10:54.08\00:10:55.68 that's what true worship is too. 00:10:55.72\00:10:57.62 Amen. That is awesome. 00:10:57.65\00:10:59.32 That's an awesome illustration, 00:10:59.35\00:11:01.16 you know... taking consideration a dog, 00:11:01.19\00:11:06.46 you know, they're very loyal to their masters. 00:11:06.49\00:11:08.46 You know, animal pets can be very loyal to their masters 00:11:08.50\00:11:11.27 and we could learn a lot from the way, 00:11:11.30\00:11:14.70 especially because I've seen the attentiveness 00:11:14.74\00:11:18.64 and the obedience and the humbleness 00:11:18.67\00:11:20.94 that his dog shows to him 00:11:20.98\00:11:23.01 as he has trained her very well. 00:11:23.04\00:11:24.51 And, you know, they love her and care for her 00:11:24.55\00:11:26.41 and take care of her. 00:11:26.45\00:11:28.02 And it's just amazing. 00:11:28.05\00:11:29.38 And sometimes when I see that scene, 00:11:29.42\00:11:31.22 I'm just like, wow, that's how we should be 00:11:31.25\00:11:33.09 with the Lord, yet even more, right? 00:11:33.12\00:11:35.12 Because God is our master. 00:11:35.16\00:11:36.66 Right. Absolutely. 00:11:36.69\00:11:38.59 I have to read this 'cause I found an article 00:11:38.63\00:11:41.80 from 2012 Christianity Today. 00:11:41.83\00:11:45.77 And I just wanna read these words 00:11:45.80\00:11:47.47 'cause I thought it was worded so well 00:11:47.50\00:11:49.47 just to kind of encapsulates 00:11:49.50\00:11:51.24 what it is that we're discussing today 00:11:51.27\00:11:53.04 as to what worship is. 00:11:53.07\00:11:54.41 And then in a few minutes, 00:11:54.44\00:11:55.78 we're gonna get into what Jesus said about worship, 00:11:55.81\00:11:58.25 which is, you know, it's kind of a, it's a dual thing. 00:11:58.28\00:12:01.25 We have to worship Him in spirit and truth. 00:12:01.28\00:12:04.02 And we're gonna get into that in just a moment. 00:12:04.05\00:12:05.39 But I want to read this from a 2012 article 00:12:05.42\00:12:09.09 in Christianity Today. 00:12:09.12\00:12:10.66 And this is what they say. 00:12:10.69\00:12:12.69 "Worship is not the slow song that the choir sings. 00:12:12.73\00:12:17.27 Worship is not the amount you place 00:12:17.30\00:12:19.67 in the offering basket. 00:12:19.70\00:12:21.54 Worship is not volunteering in children's church. 00:12:21.57\00:12:25.51 Yes, these may be acts or expressions of worship, 00:12:25.54\00:12:30.41 but they do not define what true worship really is. 00:12:30.45\00:12:34.32 There are numerous definitions of the word worship 00:12:34.35\00:12:37.42 yet one in particular encapsulates 00:12:37.45\00:12:40.06 the priority we should give to worship 00:12:40.09\00:12:42.76 as a spiritual discipline." 00:12:42.79\00:12:44.73 And in the article, they go to that definition. 00:12:44.76\00:12:48.50 And it's a beautiful definition, 00:12:48.53\00:12:49.86 which you probably won't find in any dictionary today 00:12:49.90\00:12:52.27 'cause this actually comes from Webster's dictionary, 00:12:52.30\00:12:54.90 the 1828 edition. 00:12:54.94\00:12:57.21 And this is the definition of worship 00:12:57.24\00:12:59.54 in Webster's dictionary 1828, 00:12:59.57\00:13:02.38 "Worship is to honor with extravagant love 00:13:02.41\00:13:06.28 and extreme submission. 00:13:06.31\00:13:08.15 And sometimes we don't like that word extreme 00:13:08.18\00:13:10.09 because it sounds just a little extreme, right? 00:13:10.12\00:13:12.39 It does. 00:13:12.42\00:13:13.76 But yet, you know, 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.12 when it comes to your love for God, 00:13:15.16\00:13:16.49 does it sometimes appear to some, to others as extreme. 00:13:16.52\00:13:19.63 It can, depending on how devoted you are to Him, 00:13:19.66\00:13:22.63 but the article goes on 00:13:22.66\00:13:24.00 and this is what really caught my attention. 00:13:24.03\00:13:26.30 It go on to say, "True worship in other words 00:13:26.33\00:13:29.20 is defined by the priority 00:13:29.24\00:13:31.27 we place on who God is in our lives 00:13:31.31\00:13:35.01 and where God is on our list of priorities. 00:13:35.04\00:13:38.88 And then I highlighted this next line 00:13:38.91\00:13:40.48 because it really just identifies it very clearly. 00:13:40.52\00:13:43.72 True worship is a matter of the heart expressed 00:13:43.75\00:13:47.92 through a lifestyle of holiness. 00:13:47.96\00:13:50.56 It's an attitude of the heart. 00:13:50.59\00:13:51.93 I remember taking a class, you know, 00:13:51.96\00:13:54.20 in seminary program at Andrews, worship, word and music. 00:13:54.23\00:13:56.93 And we talked about how worship is the attitude of the heart. 00:13:56.97\00:14:01.30 It's almost an, a lifestyle, it's a state of being. 00:14:01.34\00:14:04.97 It's not necessarily what you do. 00:14:05.01\00:14:06.91 Those are expressions. 00:14:06.94\00:14:08.28 Those actions are expressions of it. 00:14:08.31\00:14:10.21 But this goes on to say, 00:14:10.25\00:14:11.58 "Thus, if your lifestyle does not express 00:14:11.61\00:14:13.92 the beauty of holiness through an extravagant 00:14:13.95\00:14:16.72 and exaggerated love for God, 00:14:16.75\00:14:19.39 and you do not live in extreme 00:14:19.42\00:14:21.62 or excessive submission to God," 00:14:21.66\00:14:23.43 again, that kind of sounds a little extreme, 00:14:23.46\00:14:25.39 but they, their word, 00:14:25.43\00:14:26.76 their usage of words here I think are accurate. 00:14:26.80\00:14:28.50 "Then I invite you, they say, to make worship 00:14:28.53\00:14:31.47 a non-negotiable priority in your life." 00:14:31.50\00:14:35.64 That was really, really... 00:14:35.67\00:14:37.01 I thought it really caught my attention. 00:14:37.04\00:14:38.77 And so what is worship? 00:14:38.81\00:14:41.08 Dakota, I wanna go to 1 Chronicles 16. 00:14:41.11\00:14:44.18 Okay. 00:14:44.21\00:14:45.55 And we're just gonna kind of start here 00:14:45.58\00:14:46.92 because a lot of people, when they think of worship, 00:14:46.95\00:14:48.65 they think of, you know, their mind automatically goes 00:14:48.68\00:14:51.42 to like a church scene perhaps maybe. 00:14:51.45\00:14:53.29 You're in church and you're participating 00:14:53.32\00:14:55.89 in a worship service, right? 00:14:55.92\00:14:57.66 We call that our worship experience 00:14:57.69\00:14:59.29 or the divine worship hour. 00:14:59.33\00:15:01.56 And so a lot of people in their mind, 00:15:01.60\00:15:03.53 they have the concept of worship 00:15:03.57\00:15:05.20 as things that they do. 00:15:05.23\00:15:07.47 And as we have clearly said, more than once 00:15:07.50\00:15:09.50 that worship can be expressed. 00:15:09.54\00:15:11.24 Those are expressions or actions 00:15:11.27\00:15:13.48 and the correct term in many cases, 00:15:13.51\00:15:15.54 as far as what's going on in the worship service, 00:15:15.58\00:15:17.45 with the liturgy, you know, 00:15:17.48\00:15:19.01 you do this at this time is an expression of this, 00:15:19.05\00:15:21.98 your worship and your homage to God. 00:15:22.02\00:15:23.52 And you do this at this time. 00:15:23.55\00:15:24.89 And it kinda seems like our worship services 00:15:24.92\00:15:27.19 are organized in that way. 00:15:27.22\00:15:28.69 This is the time for the offering. 00:15:28.72\00:15:30.13 And this is the time to sing the opening hymn, the children. 00:15:30.16\00:15:32.99 People get upset if you change the order. 00:15:33.03\00:15:34.36 Right. 00:15:34.40\00:15:35.73 You know, like, well, no, 00:15:35.76\00:15:37.10 the offering needs to come this time. 00:15:37.13\00:15:38.70 No, the children's stories here. 00:15:38.73\00:15:40.07 So, yeah, absolutely. Right. 00:15:40.10\00:15:41.44 And then there's others who absolutely despise 00:15:41.47\00:15:43.81 the way we, our worship services are organized. 00:15:43.84\00:15:46.61 And, but again, I think this 1 Chronicle 16:23-31 00:15:46.64\00:15:50.98 kind of encapsulates what many people's ideas 00:15:51.01\00:15:54.22 are as far as how you express 00:15:54.25\00:15:56.18 or declare that worship unto God. 00:15:56.22\00:15:58.19 So, Dakota, why don't you read 1 Chronicles 16:23-31? 00:15:58.22\00:16:02.82 All right. 00:16:02.86\00:16:04.19 It says, "Sing unto the Lord, all the earth, 00:16:04.23\00:16:06.39 shew forth from day to day his salvation. 00:16:06.43\00:16:09.36 Declare his glory among the heathen, 00:16:09.40\00:16:11.70 his marvelous works among all nations. 00:16:11.73\00:16:14.87 For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised: 00:16:14.90\00:16:17.57 he also is to be feared above all gods. 00:16:17.61\00:16:20.41 For all the gods of the people are idols: 00:16:20.44\00:16:22.71 but the Lord made the heavens. 00:16:22.74\00:16:24.51 Glory and honor are in his presence, 00:16:24.55\00:16:26.78 strength and gladness are in his place. 00:16:26.82\00:16:29.28 Give unto the Lord, ye kindreds of the people, 00:16:29.32\00:16:31.59 give unto the Lord glory and strength. 00:16:31.62\00:16:34.29 Give unto the Lord the glory due unto his name: 00:16:34.32\00:16:37.69 bring an offering, and come before him: 00:16:37.73\00:16:40.53 worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. 00:16:40.56\00:16:43.53 Fear before him, all the earth: the world also shall be stable, 00:16:43.57\00:16:48.50 that it may not be moved. 00:16:48.54\00:16:51.37 Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice: 00:16:51.41\00:16:54.74 and let men say among the nations, 00:16:54.78\00:16:57.08 the Lord reigneth." 00:16:57.11\00:16:59.48 Amen. Beautiful. 00:16:59.51\00:17:00.85 It's kind of a beautiful poetic expression of worship, right? 00:17:00.88\00:17:06.15 Tremble before Him. 00:17:06.19\00:17:08.22 I kind of, you know, 00:17:08.26\00:17:09.59 those words kind of don't fit our idea 00:17:09.62\00:17:12.39 right of standing in the presence of the Lord. 00:17:12.43\00:17:14.40 But I don't think that this is necessarily talking about 00:17:14.43\00:17:16.77 trembling in the sense of, 00:17:16.80\00:17:18.13 you know, shaking in your jeans and then, you know, 00:17:18.17\00:17:20.84 running the opposite way from the Lord riding 00:17:20.87\00:17:22.80 as in fear or, but this is talking about more of a, 00:17:22.84\00:17:25.51 an homage of respect and awe, 00:17:25.54\00:17:27.94 a reverential awe for the Lord. 00:17:27.98\00:17:29.78 This is talking about a response of true worship. 00:17:29.81\00:17:33.85 And so, as I was reading through this, 00:17:33.88\00:17:37.39 it took me to the Book of Revelation. 00:17:37.42\00:17:39.32 And I know that you had prepared something, Jill, 00:17:39.35\00:17:41.26 I think, from the Book of Revelation here, 00:17:41.29\00:17:43.16 but I would like to go to Revelation 4 00:17:43.19\00:17:45.53 and, Brother Greg, 00:17:45.56\00:17:46.93 I'm going to let you read Revelation chapter 4. 00:17:46.96\00:17:49.43 This is that beautiful throne room scene, 00:17:49.46\00:17:51.67 where we see worship taking place, 00:17:51.70\00:17:54.80 the actions, the expressions of worship taking place 00:17:54.84\00:17:57.81 right there in the presence of God. 00:17:57.84\00:17:59.94 This is, of course, within the context 00:17:59.97\00:18:01.71 of the 24 elders and the living creatures. 00:18:01.74\00:18:03.78 Revelation 4:10-11. 00:18:03.81\00:18:06.11 Go ahead and read that for us. Yes. 00:18:06.15\00:18:07.48 Revelation 4:10-11 says, 00:18:07.52\00:18:09.85 " The twenty-four elders fall down before Him 00:18:09.88\00:18:12.29 who sits on the throne and worship Him 00:18:12.32\00:18:14.89 who lives forever and ever, 00:18:14.92\00:18:17.43 and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: 00:18:17.46\00:18:21.26 'You are worthy, O Lord, 00:18:21.30\00:18:22.93 to receive glory and honor and power, 00:18:22.96\00:18:26.50 for You created all things, and by Your will they exist 00:18:26.53\00:18:30.71 and were created.' " 00:18:30.74\00:18:32.07 Amen. 00:18:32.11\00:18:33.44 Yeah. That's powerful, isn't it? 00:18:33.48\00:18:34.81 I love that, right? 00:18:34.84\00:18:36.18 Because not only does this give us kind of an image, 00:18:36.21\00:18:39.31 a mental picture of these heavenly beings, 00:18:39.35\00:18:42.75 just kind of prostrate in front of the Lord, 00:18:42.78\00:18:45.02 casting their crowns before God, 00:18:45.05\00:18:46.96 giving their awe in this kind of proskuneo, 00:18:46.99\00:18:50.16 you know, nose to the floor, 00:18:50.19\00:18:51.69 you know, kind of humble situation, 00:18:51.73\00:18:53.96 but it also answers an important question here. 00:18:54.00\00:18:56.23 And, Jill, I'm gonna let you kind of take us 00:18:56.26\00:18:59.13 into your Revelation study here on worship. 00:18:59.17\00:19:03.37 But it also, I believe, really identifies 00:19:03.41\00:19:06.47 why God is worthy of worship. 00:19:06.51\00:19:09.64 You know, from a secular minded perspective, 00:19:09.68\00:19:12.68 someone who may not be very religious, 00:19:12.71\00:19:14.15 someone who may even be, you know, atheist or agnostic, 00:19:14.18\00:19:16.72 they may look, you know, at the concept of worshiping 00:19:16.75\00:19:19.45 this one Christian God, and say, 00:19:19.49\00:19:21.42 "Isn't there many gods in the world?" 00:19:21.46\00:19:22.79 Right? 00:19:22.82\00:19:24.16 What makes this God worthy of worship? 00:19:24.19\00:19:25.63 What makes Him stand out? 00:19:25.66\00:19:27.36 And I love the fact that in this verse here, 00:19:27.40\00:19:29.96 it says that you are worthy Lord 00:19:30.00\00:19:31.73 to receive glory and honor and power. 00:19:31.77\00:19:33.34 Why? 00:19:33.37\00:19:34.70 For You created all things and by Your will they exist 00:19:34.74\00:19:39.04 and were created. 00:19:39.07\00:19:40.41 We serve a mighty God. 00:19:40.44\00:19:41.78 We worship the creator of all things. 00:19:41.81\00:19:43.58 That's powerful too because He created, 00:19:43.61\00:19:45.08 but then also this word exists, right? 00:19:45.11\00:19:47.35 Yes. Staining, 00:19:47.38\00:19:48.72 Right. That's huge. 00:19:48.75\00:19:50.09 Lots of people cannot create living things, 00:19:50.12\00:19:51.95 but to keep it going. 00:19:51.99\00:19:53.32 I mean, that's powerful. 00:19:53.36\00:19:54.69 Amen. It really is. 00:19:54.72\00:19:56.06 Yeah. Amen. 00:19:56.09\00:19:57.43 To me, it's just amazing. 00:19:57.46\00:19:58.79 I love what you said, Ryan, because why do we worship? 00:19:58.83\00:20:00.80 Yeah. We have to know who we worship. 00:20:00.83\00:20:02.70 That's right. Right? 00:20:02.73\00:20:04.07 Because if you don't understand God, 00:20:04.10\00:20:06.07 we recently studied Isaiah 00:20:06.10\00:20:08.14 for Sabbath School Panel is Isaiah. 00:20:08.17\00:20:10.24 And it reminds me of when we got to Isaiah 40, 00:20:10.27\00:20:12.61 I was just, I was undone. 00:20:12.64\00:20:14.68 Who is this guy that we worship this God, 00:20:14.71\00:20:18.45 our God is omnipotent. 00:20:18.48\00:20:20.52 Our God is eternal. 00:20:20.55\00:20:22.15 Our God is the creator. 00:20:22.18\00:20:23.82 That's why we worship. 00:20:23.85\00:20:25.19 And when I read here in Revelation 45, 00:20:25.22\00:20:28.02 that's what I see. 00:20:28.06\00:20:29.39 The reasons why we worship. 00:20:29.42\00:20:31.76 So I wanna look at just a couple of verses. 00:20:31.79\00:20:33.13 Sure. 00:20:33.16\00:20:34.50 If we pick up in verse 8, the middle of verse 8, 00:20:34.53\00:20:36.97 these were the four living creatures crying out, 00:20:37.00\00:20:39.60 we're in Revelation 4:8. 00:20:39.63\00:20:42.40 What did they cry out? 00:20:42.44\00:20:43.77 "Holy Holy, Holy." Why do we worship? 00:20:43.81\00:20:46.74 Because our God is Holy. Right. 00:20:46.78\00:20:50.08 "Lord, God almighty, who was and is and is to come." 00:20:50.11\00:20:54.68 Why do we worship? 00:20:54.72\00:20:56.05 Our God is internal. That's right. 00:20:56.08\00:20:58.65 He always existed 00:20:58.69\00:21:00.32 from eternity past to the future. 00:21:00.36\00:21:02.26 Our God is eternal. 00:21:02.29\00:21:03.63 Then jumping down to what Greg just read in verse 11, 00:21:03.66\00:21:06.26 "You are worthy, oh Lord, 00:21:06.29\00:21:07.70 to receive glory and honor and power, 00:21:07.73\00:21:09.93 for You created all things." 00:21:09.96\00:21:12.23 Our God is not just holy, we worship because He's holy. 00:21:12.27\00:21:15.37 We worship because He is eternal. 00:21:15.40\00:21:17.11 We worship because He is our creator. 00:21:17.14\00:21:21.48 For You created all things, 00:21:21.51\00:21:22.88 and by Your will they exist and were created. 00:21:22.91\00:21:25.41 We worship because He is our sustainer. 00:21:25.45\00:21:28.28 Right. 00:21:28.32\00:21:29.65 Then we get to Revelation 5. 00:21:29.68\00:21:31.09 And Jesus, the lion of the tribe of Judah, 00:21:31.12\00:21:34.06 the lamb slain shows up, right? 00:21:34.09\00:21:36.66 Peter references this in Acts Chapter 2. 00:21:36.69\00:21:39.06 Remember that Pentecostal sermon 00:21:39.09\00:21:41.26 and saying after Jesus resurrected. 00:21:41.30\00:21:43.30 He ascended to the right hand of the Father. 00:21:43.33\00:21:45.37 That's right. 00:21:45.40\00:21:46.74 And so we see Jesus is worthy to open the scroll, 00:21:46.77\00:21:51.41 but then the living creatures and the elders fall down 00:21:51.44\00:21:56.38 and worship Jesus. 00:21:56.41\00:21:57.75 And this is in verse 9, they sing a new song, 00:21:57.78\00:22:00.18 we're in Revelation 5:9, 00:22:00.22\00:22:02.12 "You are worthy to take the scroll 00:22:02.15\00:22:03.89 and open its seals, for you were slain." 00:22:03.92\00:22:06.69 Why do we worship? 00:22:06.72\00:22:08.06 Because He's not just holy, He's not just eternal. 00:22:08.09\00:22:10.76 He's not just our creator. 00:22:10.79\00:22:12.79 He's not just our sustainer. He is our redeemer. 00:22:12.83\00:22:15.60 Wow. Amen. 00:22:15.63\00:22:16.97 And have redeemed us. 00:22:17.00\00:22:18.53 You were slain and have redeemed us 00:22:18.57\00:22:20.20 to God by Your blood. 00:22:20.24\00:22:22.40 Amen. 00:22:22.44\00:22:23.77 Out of every tribe and tongue and people and nation, 00:22:23.81\00:22:28.08 salvation is for everyone, not just one group. 00:22:28.11\00:22:31.58 Salvation is for everyone. 00:22:31.61\00:22:33.25 Have made us kings and priests to our God, 00:22:33.28\00:22:35.52 and we shall reign on the earth. 00:22:35.55\00:22:37.65 He's made us kings and priests. 00:22:37.69\00:22:39.09 So we worship God. 00:22:39.12\00:22:42.39 I love Him because of who He is. 00:22:42.42\00:22:44.33 That's right. 00:22:44.36\00:22:45.69 That's what worship is about, recognizing God. 00:22:45.73\00:22:48.10 Praise the Lord. Yeah. 00:22:48.13\00:22:49.46 You know, Brother Ryan, I wanna go back to, 00:22:49.50\00:22:50.97 I was just thinking about why we worship 00:22:51.00\00:22:52.83 and going back to what you're talking about 00:22:52.87\00:22:54.20 those definitions and thank you for putting them 00:22:54.24\00:22:56.00 in here in the notes here. 00:22:56.04\00:22:57.37 Going back to the Webster's one. 00:22:57.41\00:22:59.34 Worship is to honor with extravagant love. 00:22:59.37\00:23:04.01 So I think we worship, 00:23:04.05\00:23:05.41 we don't, I don't think I know we worship 00:23:05.45\00:23:06.78 because we love God. 00:23:06.82\00:23:08.15 That's how we should worship, right, because we love God. 00:23:08.18\00:23:09.88 You had here too. 00:23:09.92\00:23:11.25 This one from the Christianity Today. 00:23:11.29\00:23:12.62 I like that with extravagant or exaggerated love for God. 00:23:12.65\00:23:16.89 So I think of Mark 12:13, it says, 00:23:16.93\00:23:22.03 "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, 00:23:22.06\00:23:26.87 with all thy soul, with all thy mind. 00:23:26.90\00:23:28.57 Right. 00:23:28.60\00:23:29.94 You know, Dakota, I'm going back to your dog. 00:23:29.97\00:23:31.31 You know, your dog is not a human being, 00:23:31.34\00:23:32.67 but I believe your dog is licking you because 00:23:32.71\00:23:34.28 for one thing, you know, 00:23:34.31\00:23:35.64 you feed her and stuff like that. 00:23:35.68\00:23:37.01 But I also believe, however dog can love somebody. 00:23:37.05\00:23:39.35 There's some type of connection that's there. 00:23:39.38\00:23:41.22 Absolutely, yeah. 00:23:41.25\00:23:42.58 You know, so I think about us with God. 00:23:42.62\00:23:43.95 Why do I worship God? 00:23:43.99\00:23:45.32 Why I even want to worship God, I can be afraid of God, 00:23:45.35\00:23:48.09 but that's not very fun. 00:23:48.12\00:23:49.46 Yeah. Right. 00:23:49.49\00:23:50.83 But if I love God, that's huge. 00:23:50.86\00:23:52.49 Absolutely, yeah. 00:23:52.53\00:23:53.86 You know, I love my wife while I love my wife, 00:23:53.90\00:23:55.70 there's a relationship that's there. 00:23:55.73\00:23:57.77 So I think for me, the reason for worshiping God, 00:23:57.80\00:23:59.87 because I love God. 00:23:59.90\00:24:01.44 He created me. 00:24:01.47\00:24:02.80 He sustains me. That's the motivation. 00:24:02.84\00:24:04.57 It's the motivation. Thank you. 00:24:04.61\00:24:06.11 That's the key word. Praise the Lord. 00:24:06.14\00:24:07.78 I love what you said there because we love God. 00:24:07.81\00:24:12.65 We express our worship to Him 00:24:12.68\00:24:14.92 and it's based on that extravagant love. 00:24:14.95\00:24:16.38 That's right. 00:24:16.42\00:24:17.75 It's great that you read here, yeah But it's powerful. 00:24:17.79\00:24:19.39 We love Him because He first loved us. 00:24:19.42\00:24:20.76 Yes, exactly what I was thinking of. 00:24:20.79\00:24:22.12 That's right. 00:24:22.16\00:24:23.49 God doesn't expect us to just worship Him. 00:24:23.53\00:24:25.09 You know, like, you know, you don't know Me, worship Me. 00:24:25.13\00:24:27.23 He extends Himself first. 00:24:27.26\00:24:29.43 He gives us a reason. 00:24:29.46\00:24:30.87 That's beautiful. Why we want to worship Him. 00:24:30.90\00:24:32.47 And I think of my dog, you know, like 00:24:32.50\00:24:33.84 the Bible says in Genesis that God gave us, 00:24:33.87\00:24:36.44 you know, Adam and Eve and humanity dominion 00:24:36.47\00:24:39.37 over the beast of the earth, right? 00:24:39.41\00:24:41.34 And so when you think about it that way, 00:24:41.38\00:24:42.71 like we have dominion over all the beasts of the earth, 00:24:42.74\00:24:44.78 but what's amazing though is like to think about 00:24:44.81\00:24:47.32 the beast of the earth and the animals of the earth 00:24:47.35\00:24:49.32 will not show us love and affection 00:24:49.35\00:24:51.32 if we do not first show them love and affection. 00:24:51.35\00:24:53.49 Yeah. 00:24:53.52\00:24:54.86 You see some people who have animals, 00:24:54.89\00:24:56.22 you go to like the humane society 00:24:56.26\00:24:57.59 or something like that, where they do, 00:24:57.63\00:25:00.56 you know they have pets that have been abused 00:25:00.60\00:25:02.30 and all these different things, animal shelters and stuff. 00:25:02.33\00:25:06.23 And you see these dogs that will like, 00:25:06.27\00:25:07.70 when you walk up to the cage, 00:25:07.74\00:25:09.07 they'll walk to the back of the cage. 00:25:09.10\00:25:10.61 They don't wanna be around humans, 00:25:10.64\00:25:12.21 because of the way they've been treated. 00:25:12.24\00:25:14.01 But my dog is not that way, like she runs to humans 00:25:14.04\00:25:17.08 because of how we've treated her. 00:25:17.11\00:25:19.11 She just thinks humans are the grandest thing 00:25:19.15\00:25:21.42 that's ever happened in the world. 00:25:21.45\00:25:23.49 And she wants to show her love and affection 00:25:23.52\00:25:25.95 to each human she comes to. 00:25:25.99\00:25:27.32 And if you guys have pets, you know 00:25:27.36\00:25:28.69 what I'm talking about? 00:25:28.72\00:25:30.06 I mean, it's such a beautiful thing. 00:25:30.09\00:25:31.43 It is. 00:25:31.46\00:25:32.79 But I think it really, 00:25:32.83\00:25:34.16 it kind of really encapsulates the idea of, 00:25:34.20\00:25:35.76 of why we should love God. 00:25:35.80\00:25:37.43 It's because when we see what He's done for us, 00:25:37.47\00:25:39.70 as you mentioned, Jill, He redeemed us. 00:25:39.73\00:25:42.47 When we see the love of... 00:25:42.50\00:25:44.27 that it was displayed on Calvary, 00:25:44.31\00:25:45.81 it gives us an awe. 00:25:45.84\00:25:47.38 It's just like, wow. 00:25:47.41\00:25:48.74 And we like a dog, we just wanna come to Jesus 00:25:48.78\00:25:51.25 and we just wanna wag our tails, 00:25:51.28\00:25:52.61 you know, and just... 00:25:52.65\00:25:54.82 We just wanna be happy. 00:25:54.85\00:25:56.18 And we want to like my dog, honey, she lives to please me. 00:25:56.22\00:26:01.39 She really does, like, she lives to please me. 00:26:01.42\00:26:04.23 Everything that she does and her entire life's 00:26:04.26\00:26:06.63 existence is to just, she's always staring at me. 00:26:06.66\00:26:10.13 If I get up to go to the kitchen or whatever, 00:26:10.17\00:26:11.70 it doesn't matter. 00:26:11.73\00:26:13.07 She's always there and she's just willing. 00:26:13.10\00:26:15.07 And you know, I think of the scripture 00:26:15.10\00:26:16.60 where Jesus was speaking to the woman, 00:26:16.64\00:26:19.24 who come to Him and He was, 00:26:19.27\00:26:21.24 she was asking for a healing, right? 00:26:21.28\00:26:22.84 And he says what? 00:26:22.88\00:26:24.68 I should not throw what is holding on to the dogs. 00:26:24.71\00:26:27.18 Right. Yeah. 00:26:27.22\00:26:28.55 But then what does she say? 00:26:28.58\00:26:29.92 She says, even the dogs eat the crumbs, 00:26:29.95\00:26:32.12 which fall from their master's table. 00:26:32.15\00:26:35.29 She compared herself to a dog. 00:26:35.32\00:26:37.46 Right? 00:26:37.49\00:26:38.83 In a sense, or he compared her to, so to speak, 00:26:38.86\00:26:41.83 or she compares herself to a dog. 00:26:41.86\00:26:43.20 I almost got that backwards, but basically in a sense that 00:26:43.23\00:26:46.30 that she's saying, yeah, but 00:26:46.33\00:26:47.80 I'm willing to take anything from your table. 00:26:47.84\00:26:50.67 I'm willing to come to you 00:26:50.71\00:26:52.04 and just soak up everything you have. 00:26:52.07\00:26:54.78 And I think that if we would be like that with God, 00:26:54.81\00:26:56.85 we would understand what true worship really is. 00:26:56.88\00:26:58.45 Absolutely. That's good. 00:26:58.48\00:26:59.81 I like John 3:16 too. Yeah. 00:26:59.85\00:27:01.18 Yes, Ryan, for God so loved the world. 00:27:01.22\00:27:03.28 Yeah. Amen 00:27:03.32\00:27:04.65 That's powerful. It is, man. 00:27:04.69\00:27:06.02 He gave us the most precious gift. 00:27:06.05\00:27:07.39 Yeah. 00:27:07.42\00:27:08.76 Praise the Lord. Yeah. 00:27:08.79\00:27:10.13 So it was great. I love this topic. 00:27:10.16\00:27:11.49 It goes to so many directions. Absolutely. 00:27:11.53\00:27:12.86 Yeah, you could, we could dissect this for 00:27:12.89\00:27:14.50 two or three more family worships 00:27:14.53\00:27:16.43 if we wanted to, but you know, it's just powerful. 00:27:16.46\00:27:18.77 And I have to make mention, I can't help, 00:27:18.80\00:27:20.24 but my musical mind 00:27:20.27\00:27:21.80 picks this up there in Revelation 5, 00:27:21.84\00:27:23.51 where you took us earlier. 00:27:23.54\00:27:25.04 You know, you can sense and this was almost 00:27:25.07\00:27:28.21 come across as comedic here 00:27:28.24\00:27:29.84 or facetious, but that's not the point. 00:27:29.88\00:27:32.25 I just, it's amazing. 00:27:32.28\00:27:33.62 You can see, you can almost sense 00:27:33.65\00:27:35.85 God's worthiness of worship. 00:27:35.88\00:27:38.55 And the fact that these brothers, 00:27:38.59\00:27:40.16 they sing a new song the Bible says. 00:27:40.19\00:27:42.16 They freestyled a brand new song 00:27:42.19\00:27:44.13 that nobody else had ever seen before. 00:27:44.16\00:27:46.36 That's how much love and how much connectivity 00:27:46.39\00:27:50.33 that these brothers had, 00:27:50.37\00:27:52.10 you know, to the Lord in the sense that 00:27:52.13\00:27:53.64 on the spot, they were able, 00:27:53.67\00:27:55.30 but I'm sure, the leading and guiding power 00:27:55.34\00:27:56.97 of the Holy Spirit to sing a new song, 00:27:57.01\00:27:59.47 to bring worship and honor to Christ. 00:27:59.51\00:28:01.54 And that's powerful. 00:28:01.58\00:28:02.91 Then there should be a kind 00:28:02.94\00:28:04.28 of a reflection of our life as well, 00:28:04.31\00:28:06.31 that our life should be a reflection 00:28:06.35\00:28:08.72 of being able to always come up with a new, fresh way 00:28:08.75\00:28:12.55 to worship the Lord. 00:28:12.59\00:28:13.92 And we're going to get into in just a moment of, 00:28:13.96\00:28:16.49 you know, how not to worship, right? 00:28:16.52\00:28:18.09 You know, because we're not gonna spend 00:28:18.13\00:28:19.53 a lot of time on that, but you know, 00:28:19.56\00:28:20.96 there's, we're gonna talk about how to worship, 00:28:21.00\00:28:22.70 you know, from a biblical perspective, 00:28:22.73\00:28:24.30 but how not to worship. 00:28:24.33\00:28:25.93 Before we transition to that, is there anything that 00:28:25.97\00:28:27.90 you guys want to say on this, on this part? 00:28:27.94\00:28:29.40 So I'm going to kick this to Dakota right now. 00:28:29.44\00:28:31.31 Dakota, we're about to go into answering 00:28:31.34\00:28:33.71 the question that's on our outline here 00:28:33.74\00:28:35.08 which is, how does the Bible instruct us 00:28:35.11\00:28:37.81 to worship the Lord? 00:28:37.85\00:28:39.18 We're gonna be looking at what Jesus said 00:28:39.21\00:28:40.55 and how to worship the Lord. 00:28:40.58\00:28:41.92 But you, you brought this to me as we were preparing for this. 00:28:41.95\00:28:44.59 And you said you know what? 00:28:44.62\00:28:45.95 Someone may have the question of, 00:28:45.99\00:28:47.32 you know, how do we make sure 00:28:47.36\00:28:49.16 how we worship the Lord correctly? 00:28:49.19\00:28:52.49 There's gotta be ways, perspectives, mindset, 00:28:52.53\00:28:56.77 concepts of worship that is not appropriate, 00:28:56.80\00:28:59.43 or that, you know, ways that we should not worship. 00:28:59.47\00:29:02.04 Kind of take us down a little bit of that 00:29:02.07\00:29:03.91 just for a period? 00:29:03.94\00:29:05.61 We as human beings, we're born into this world 00:29:05.64\00:29:07.44 with a very sinful and self-centered nature, 00:29:07.48\00:29:10.28 and we tend to make worship sometimes, 00:29:10.31\00:29:12.98 let's just say it this way, let's be frank. 00:29:13.01\00:29:14.35 A lot of times we tend to make worship about ourselves. 00:29:14.38\00:29:17.52 Yeah. 00:29:17.55\00:29:18.89 And I'm not talking about necessarily just, 00:29:18.92\00:29:20.59 you know, day-to-day activities per se. 00:29:20.62\00:29:22.32 I'm even talking about some people 00:29:22.36\00:29:24.46 who mean well, but yet worship even in God's house, 00:29:24.49\00:29:27.90 even in church sometimes turns into a worship 00:29:27.93\00:29:31.03 that is self-centered about 00:29:31.07\00:29:33.54 what I do rather than what, 00:29:33.57\00:29:36.00 yes, performance, rather than what about God, right? 00:29:36.04\00:29:39.24 Worship should be not about us, but about God. 00:29:39.27\00:29:42.14 And I was thinking about that, a wrong ways to worship 00:29:42.18\00:29:44.78 and just centering on that. 00:29:44.81\00:29:46.28 So true worship is about who? 00:29:46.31\00:29:48.65 God. It's about God. 00:29:48.68\00:29:50.02 It's about the true God, right? 00:29:50.05\00:29:51.39 So, the first instance 00:29:51.42\00:29:54.06 that I was thinking about in Scripture, 00:29:54.09\00:29:55.42 where we see like two ideas of worship being introduced 00:29:55.46\00:29:59.16 is in Genesis 4, between Cain and Abel. 00:29:59.19\00:30:01.00 Right? 00:30:01.03\00:30:02.36 You mentioned offering earlier, Jill, 00:30:02.40\00:30:04.20 when you were quoting Romans 12. 00:30:04.23\00:30:06.10 And we see these 00:30:06.13\00:30:07.84 two dichotomous ideas of worship 00:30:07.87\00:30:09.30 first presented at Genesis 4, Cain and Abel. 00:30:09.34\00:30:11.47 You know, the story, Cain brings 00:30:11.51\00:30:13.41 an offering unto God, 00:30:13.44\00:30:15.44 but his offering consisted of fruits and vegetables. 00:30:15.48\00:30:19.05 How did he get that? 00:30:19.08\00:30:20.48 His own work. His own work, right? 00:30:20.52\00:30:21.85 It was his own work, you know? 00:30:21.88\00:30:23.22 And I think many of you guys 00:30:23.25\00:30:24.59 would be able to relate to this. 00:30:24.62\00:30:25.95 Maybe you've been to a potluck and the church member walks in 00:30:25.99\00:30:27.62 and they're so excited about their tomatoes. 00:30:27.66\00:30:30.69 Ooh, look at my tomatoes. 00:30:30.73\00:30:32.06 I have the most beautiful tomatoes, 00:30:32.09\00:30:34.60 you know, in all of the area, right? 00:30:34.63\00:30:36.63 And if you guys have seen this too, 00:30:36.67\00:30:38.23 and sometimes we can become proud about that. 00:30:38.27\00:30:39.93 Look at what I did. 00:30:39.97\00:30:41.30 You know, I got the soil right and I measured it. 00:30:41.34\00:30:43.10 And so it all becomes about us. 00:30:43.14\00:30:45.07 And so Cain's offering was more centered on him 00:30:45.11\00:30:48.24 and it was his worship to God, but it was all about him. 00:30:48.28\00:30:50.65 Right. 00:30:50.68\00:30:52.01 The idea of him presenting, it was like, okay, now 00:30:52.05\00:30:54.48 what do you think about that, God? 00:30:54.52\00:30:55.85 You know, look at what I'd done, you know? 00:30:55.88\00:30:58.59 And Abel just brings what God done. 00:30:58.62\00:31:02.22 Yeah. Right. 00:31:02.26\00:31:03.59 The lamb. Right. 00:31:03.63\00:31:04.96 And he makes it all about God. 00:31:04.99\00:31:06.36 And so obviously Abel's offering was accepted. 00:31:06.39\00:31:08.90 Cain's offering was rejected. 00:31:08.93\00:31:10.53 Now some people come to church and they have this idea. 00:31:10.57\00:31:13.47 They wanna go to church. 00:31:13.50\00:31:14.84 And me and Ryan, you and I've talked about this, 00:31:14.87\00:31:16.20 you've even preached about this many times, I've heard it. 00:31:16.24\00:31:17.84 And I love the sermons that you did years ago on this, 00:31:17.87\00:31:20.24 where people come to church with their hand held out. 00:31:20.28\00:31:23.75 You know, and they're like, what can I get today 00:31:23.78\00:31:26.68 from this service? 00:31:26.72\00:31:28.05 And maybe you've been in church before 00:31:28.08\00:31:29.42 and you've walked away from a service 00:31:29.45\00:31:30.79 or a sermon perhaps, 00:31:30.82\00:31:32.79 and you go, well, I didn't get much out of that. 00:31:32.82\00:31:35.49 Well, that's not the purpose. That's not the point per se. 00:31:35.52\00:31:38.03 The point is what did God get out of it? 00:31:38.06\00:31:40.33 Did God get loved? 00:31:40.36\00:31:42.03 Did God get adored? 00:31:42.06\00:31:43.83 Did God get praised? 00:31:43.87\00:31:46.94 And so sometimes we tend to make it all about us. 00:31:46.97\00:31:49.50 And the other thing I wanted to share on this was, 00:31:49.54\00:31:51.71 it was really beautiful, altars. 00:31:51.74\00:31:54.54 That's good. So what are altars for? 00:31:54.58\00:31:57.45 For a sacrifice. They are for sacrifice, right? 00:31:57.48\00:31:59.35 Altars are for sacrifice, and they are for worship. 00:31:59.38\00:32:02.25 Altars is all about what? 00:32:02.28\00:32:05.92 What's the purpose? 00:32:05.95\00:32:07.29 Like, what's the main purpose of the altar? 00:32:07.32\00:32:08.66 Surrender. 00:32:08.69\00:32:10.03 It's all about the sacrifice that's on the altar. 00:32:10.06\00:32:11.83 Okay. Now I get you. 00:32:11.86\00:32:13.19 Right. Okay. 00:32:13.23\00:32:14.56 So the altar is for a sacrifice, right? 00:32:14.60\00:32:16.06 You make an altar in the Old Testament 00:32:16.10\00:32:17.43 for a sacrifice. 00:32:17.47\00:32:18.80 So it's all about the all caps, the Sacrifice. 00:32:18.83\00:32:22.70 Sacrifice, right. 00:32:22.74\00:32:24.47 And sometimes there is that, 00:32:24.51\00:32:26.71 I guess you can say that tendency again, 00:32:26.74\00:32:28.74 self-centeredness and our sinful nature 00:32:28.78\00:32:30.55 to make it all about us. 00:32:30.58\00:32:31.91 And as I was reading in Exodus, 00:32:31.95\00:32:33.45 I was reminded of God's command concerning the altars. 00:32:33.48\00:32:36.92 This is beautiful because in Exodus 20 it's right after 00:32:36.95\00:32:39.25 the Ten Commandments. 00:32:39.29\00:32:40.62 Yeah. Right. 00:32:40.66\00:32:42.06 You see, God's command concerning altars. 00:32:42.09\00:32:44.13 And He says this in Exodus 20:24- 26, 00:32:44.16\00:32:48.66 he says, "An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, 00:32:48.70\00:32:52.37 and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, 00:32:52.40\00:32:54.90 and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, 00:32:54.94\00:32:56.67 and thine oxen: in all places 00:32:56.71\00:32:58.41 where I record my name I will come unto thee." 00:32:58.44\00:33:00.64 So notice what God's saying now what He will do? 00:33:00.68\00:33:02.28 I will come unto thee. Right. 00:33:02.31\00:33:03.81 "I will bless thee 00:33:03.85\00:33:05.38 and if thou will make me an altar of stone, 00:33:05.41\00:33:08.48 thou shalt not build it of hewn stone." 00:33:08.52\00:33:11.72 And then he says this, 00:33:11.75\00:33:13.09 "For if you lift your tool upon it, 00:33:13.12\00:33:15.19 you have polluted it." 00:33:15.22\00:33:17.06 And then he says, 00:33:17.09\00:33:18.43 "Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, 00:33:18.46\00:33:21.20 that thy nakedness be not discovered there upon." 00:33:21.23\00:33:24.30 And so we see here is God saying, listen, 00:33:24.33\00:33:26.97 if you make Me an altar, 00:33:27.00\00:33:28.70 you better not lift a tool upon that altar. 00:33:28.74\00:33:31.14 Because if you lift a tool, tool meaning work. 00:33:31.17\00:33:33.61 If you add to the altar, 00:33:33.64\00:33:35.38 then the sacrifice will not be the focus on the, on your part. 00:33:35.41\00:33:40.92 It'll be, look at this great altar that I have built. 00:33:40.95\00:33:43.99 Right? 00:33:44.02\00:33:45.35 And God's saying, "Listen, it's not about what you do. 00:33:45.39\00:33:47.72 The altar's about the sacrifice there upon." 00:33:47.76\00:33:49.82 Right. Yeah. 00:33:49.86\00:33:51.19 And so, and he says, don't, 00:33:51.23\00:33:52.56 you don't make steps up to that altar either, 00:33:52.59\00:33:54.66 because you don't get closer to God based on what you do. 00:33:54.70\00:33:56.97 Right. 00:33:57.00\00:33:58.33 That's beautiful. Right? 00:33:58.37\00:33:59.70 The altar is supposed to be made of earth. 00:33:59.73\00:34:01.07 And so I thought that was really meaningful 00:34:01.10\00:34:02.54 in relation to worship that we're not to do what 00:34:02.57\00:34:06.34 we think we can add to what God has done, 00:34:06.37\00:34:08.31 or even think that we can, in any way. 00:34:08.34\00:34:12.11 I guess you can say, that we can not only add, 00:34:12.15\00:34:16.38 but I guess that we can make worship 00:34:16.42\00:34:18.65 about ourselves in a kind of a slide way, 00:34:18.69\00:34:20.76 taking the attention off of God. 00:34:20.79\00:34:22.22 And sometimes that happens 00:34:22.26\00:34:23.59 that people don't even realize it. 00:34:23.63\00:34:24.96 Yeah, absolutely. 00:34:24.99\00:34:26.33 I can relate to the concept of going, 00:34:26.36\00:34:27.76 you know, as he brought up, 00:34:27.80\00:34:29.13 you know, and I've spoken on this a few times. 00:34:29.16\00:34:30.77 My idea for many years was going to church was, 00:34:30.80\00:34:33.27 I go to church to get something from it. 00:34:33.30\00:34:35.80 And that's not to say that we don't, 00:34:35.84\00:34:37.37 there's not an aspect that we go, 00:34:37.41\00:34:39.84 you know, to receive a blessing, right? 00:34:39.87\00:34:41.58 God wants to bestow a blessing upon us 00:34:41.61\00:34:43.88 in those worship atmospheres. 00:34:43.91\00:34:46.11 But we certainly have to have the right mindset 00:34:46.15\00:34:47.92 to approach the Lord, to appear before the Lord, not in, 00:34:47.95\00:34:51.32 Lord, what can I receive from You, but rather, Lord, 00:34:51.35\00:34:53.89 what can I give to You today? 00:34:53.92\00:34:55.82 Myself, my worship, my offering my tithe, my time, 00:34:55.86\00:34:59.53 my love, my worship, you know, all those are important 00:34:59.56\00:35:02.33 as we approach the Lord in worship. 00:35:02.36\00:35:04.47 And so, yeah go ahead. 00:35:04.50\00:35:05.83 I was just gonna say, that's really powerful 00:35:05.87\00:35:07.20 what you shared, Dakota. 00:35:07.24\00:35:08.57 I liked that because we think, okay, 00:35:08.60\00:35:10.47 I'm not in the world, I'm not doing all those things. 00:35:10.51\00:35:13.68 I'm a Christian. 00:35:13.71\00:35:15.44 I'm supposed to be following God. 00:35:15.48\00:35:18.01 And yet in my quest to follow God, 00:35:18.05\00:35:21.08 it can still be all about me. 00:35:21.12\00:35:22.95 That's just deep what you shared, 00:35:22.98\00:35:24.55 you know, to come back to that purpose. 00:35:24.59\00:35:27.06 Yeah. That's good. 00:35:27.09\00:35:28.42 And it's so subtle, we don't even recognize. 00:35:28.46\00:35:29.79 I mean, I've done that for years 00:35:29.82\00:35:31.33 and in my previous years and I used to make it 00:35:31.36\00:35:33.70 all about me and not even realize 00:35:33.73\00:35:35.06 I was making it all about me. 00:35:35.10\00:35:36.43 And then you, sometimes you wake up one day 00:35:36.46\00:35:37.83 and you don't even, 00:35:37.87\00:35:39.43 you feel like you're far from God. 00:35:39.47\00:35:40.80 You know what I mean? 00:35:40.84\00:35:42.17 And maybe some of you guys can relate. 00:35:42.20\00:35:43.54 I know that we used to be my experiences. 00:35:43.57\00:35:45.17 And now when I look to God and His love, 00:35:45.21\00:35:47.68 and I look to the sacrifice, like you said. 00:35:47.71\00:35:50.91 That's beautiful. It's good. 00:35:50.95\00:35:52.28 It's totally revolutionizes your idea of it. 00:35:52.31\00:35:54.78 Yeah. Great illustration. 00:35:54.82\00:35:57.32 So let's go to John 4. 00:35:57.35\00:35:59.15 Brother Greg, I'm gonna ask you to read this for us. 00:35:59.19\00:36:01.46 This is kind of the foundation. 00:36:01.49\00:36:02.82 This is kind of where this whole conversation 00:36:02.86\00:36:05.59 has been leading to because we're talking about worship 00:36:05.63\00:36:08.46 and so we talked. 00:36:08.50\00:36:09.83 Dakota brought out beautifully of things 00:36:09.86\00:36:11.50 that we must consider 00:36:11.53\00:36:12.87 and how not to approach worship. 00:36:12.90\00:36:14.74 But rather now we're gonna ask the question of 00:36:14.77\00:36:16.67 how does the Bible instruct us to worship the Lord? 00:36:16.71\00:36:19.67 And, of course, these are the words of Christ 00:36:19.71\00:36:22.01 and what better person to receive this instruction 00:36:22.04\00:36:24.55 from than from the Son of God Himself. 00:36:24.58\00:36:26.82 And so Brother Greg, this is, of course, 00:36:26.85\00:36:28.28 is within the context of the conversation 00:36:28.32\00:36:29.98 that Jesus is having with a woman at the well. 00:36:30.02\00:36:32.65 And so, you know, she brings to his attention, 00:36:32.69\00:36:34.96 you know what? 00:36:34.99\00:36:36.32 You know, Jerusalem, there's worship in Jerusalem 00:36:36.36\00:36:38.96 there at the temple. 00:36:38.99\00:36:40.33 And, you know, we don't really worship here 00:36:40.36\00:36:42.03 in Samaria because, because true worship 00:36:42.06\00:36:44.63 is of the Jews and all this stuff. 00:36:44.67\00:36:46.13 And they're having this conversation about 00:36:46.17\00:36:47.67 how there's so much emphasis 00:36:47.70\00:36:49.07 on worshiping God on that mountain, 00:36:49.10\00:36:51.27 on that temple, because that's where true worship is. 00:36:51.31\00:36:53.88 But then Jesus kind of flips the script and He brings us 00:36:53.91\00:36:57.18 to John 4:23-24. 00:36:57.21\00:36:59.38 Read that for us. Yes. 00:36:59.41\00:37:00.75 And it says, "But the hour is coming, 00:37:00.78\00:37:02.15 and now is, when the true worshipers 00:37:02.18\00:37:05.02 will worship the Father in spirit and truth; 00:37:05.05\00:37:09.22 for the Father is seeking such to worship Him." 00:37:09.26\00:37:13.70 Verse 24 says, "God is Spirit, 00:37:13.73\00:37:15.70 and those who worship Him 00:37:15.73\00:37:17.07 must worship in spirit and truth." 00:37:17.10\00:37:20.04 Absolutely. 00:37:20.07\00:37:21.40 This is Beautiful. 00:37:21.44\00:37:22.97 For a long time I wondered why he said, 00:37:23.00\00:37:25.64 God is Spirit and those who worship Him. 00:37:25.67\00:37:28.48 If you read the context of this story, 00:37:28.51\00:37:30.65 she's putting emphasis 00:37:30.68\00:37:32.01 as everyone did during that time. 00:37:32.05\00:37:33.38 And as many people still do today, 00:37:33.42\00:37:35.32 where's God found? 00:37:35.35\00:37:36.69 He's found at the church, 00:37:36.72\00:37:38.05 you know, He's found in the building, 00:37:38.09\00:37:39.42 He's found in the temple right at the synagogue, 00:37:39.45\00:37:41.72 but wherever it is you worship. 00:37:41.76\00:37:43.16 Many people's idea is that worship can only be done 00:37:43.19\00:37:46.53 within four walls of a building, 00:37:46.56\00:37:48.46 some type of holy site of some kind, 00:37:48.50\00:37:50.57 but Jesus completely revolutionizes this concept. 00:37:50.60\00:37:53.10 He says, look, we got to get out of this idea 00:37:53.13\00:37:55.64 that somehow God is combined to a box or confined to a box. 00:37:55.67\00:38:00.18 You know, He's not just in one little place. 00:38:00.21\00:38:02.31 God is Spirit, right? 00:38:02.34\00:38:03.95 And those who worship Him must worship Him 00:38:03.98\00:38:05.71 in spirit and in truth. 00:38:05.75\00:38:07.52 So the question I have to ask 00:38:07.55\00:38:09.15 question of the hour, spirit, truth. 00:38:09.18\00:38:13.82 Let's focus on in the time we have here. 00:38:13.86\00:38:16.73 What does it mean to worship the Lord in spirit and truth? 00:38:16.76\00:38:20.26 Because many people have this idea of what it means 00:38:20.30\00:38:23.16 to worship God, worship God in spirit. 00:38:23.20\00:38:25.47 And, of course, many people have their own idea 00:38:25.50\00:38:27.20 of what it means to worship the Lord in truth. 00:38:27.24\00:38:29.34 But let's talk about what does it mean 00:38:29.37\00:38:31.61 to worship God in spirit? 00:38:31.64\00:38:34.18 Just kind of off the cuff here. 00:38:34.21\00:38:36.21 When you think of worshiping the Lord in spirit, 00:38:36.24\00:38:38.08 what comes to your mind? 00:38:38.11\00:38:41.42 Well, I think the word spirit also has a translation 00:38:41.45\00:38:45.45 in the original Greek to the word life. 00:38:45.49\00:38:48.52 And so when you're worshiping God in spirit, 00:38:48.56\00:38:50.76 you worship God with your life. 00:38:50.79\00:38:52.73 And I mentioned earlier, I think it was in Christianity 00:38:52.76\00:38:54.43 Today that the quote that you read about 00:38:54.46\00:38:56.20 how it's a lifestyle. 00:38:56.23\00:38:58.40 I liked that too, that is really good. 00:38:58.43\00:38:59.77 It's a lifestyle. 00:38:59.80\00:39:01.14 Yeah, that stuck out to me because too oftentimes 00:39:01.17\00:39:02.60 we think of worship or church as like an event 00:39:02.64\00:39:07.51 where we go and we participate in this event 00:39:07.54\00:39:09.71 and then we go home and we go back to watching, 00:39:09.74\00:39:12.38 you know, our programs 00:39:12.41\00:39:13.75 that we shouldn't watch or whatever. 00:39:13.78\00:39:15.22 And so, yeah, I think that it's a lifestyle. 00:39:15.25\00:39:17.55 Absolutely. 00:39:17.59\00:39:18.92 I like how you brought that about, 00:39:18.95\00:39:20.29 because you know, 00:39:20.32\00:39:21.99 we do not, as we clearly have studied here 00:39:22.02\00:39:24.96 many times on 3ABN. 00:39:24.99\00:39:26.33 And if you're new to this, study it out, 00:39:26.36\00:39:28.80 continue to watch 3ABN 00:39:28.83\00:39:30.17 'cause we do programs all the time on, 00:39:30.20\00:39:32.03 you know, what is, what about the concept of death 00:39:32.07\00:39:35.04 and, you know, a person, you know, do we have a spirit? 00:39:35.07\00:39:37.94 You know, are we a soul or do we have a spirit? 00:39:37.97\00:39:40.58 Is it some kind of, you know, inner substance, 00:39:40.61\00:39:42.71 you know, ghost like, you know, apparition 00:39:42.74\00:39:44.51 or whatever that's in us. 00:39:44.55\00:39:45.88 Many people have this kind of twisted idea 00:39:45.91\00:39:48.02 that there's this spiritual ghost within us. 00:39:48.05\00:39:50.09 But yet in scripture, 00:39:50.12\00:39:51.45 the Bible says that when God created, man, 00:39:51.49\00:39:53.32 He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life 00:39:53.36\00:39:56.16 and man became a living soul. 00:39:56.19\00:39:58.13 So that's what you were highlighting here 00:39:58.16\00:40:00.10 is the fact that there's kind of a... 00:40:00.13\00:40:01.90 I see this in kind of a double application 00:40:01.93\00:40:03.83 and we can unpack this here in a moment. 00:40:03.87\00:40:06.10 When we worship the Lord in spirit, 00:40:06.13\00:40:07.60 I think it's kind of a double application 00:40:07.64\00:40:09.10 in the sense that we must worship Him 00:40:09.14\00:40:10.77 as Dakota brought out with all of our life, 00:40:10.81\00:40:13.38 with all of our very living being, 00:40:13.41\00:40:15.84 with all of our spirit, that spirit of life 00:40:15.88\00:40:18.28 that God has given us. 00:40:18.31\00:40:19.81 We should be an open book of worship unto the Lord. 00:40:19.85\00:40:24.19 On the other side, I believe that there is an application 00:40:24.22\00:40:27.69 clearly here that we should be led by the spirit, 00:40:27.72\00:40:31.59 the Holy Spirit of the Lord. 00:40:31.63\00:40:33.63 And, of course, my mind immediately goes 00:40:33.66\00:40:35.26 to that conversation that Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:40:35.30\00:40:38.80 Go ahead. 00:40:38.83\00:40:40.17 Yeah, I was just going there. Yeah, go ahead. 00:40:40.20\00:40:41.90 I was thinking that and Jesus conversation 00:40:41.94\00:40:44.11 with Nicodemus, comparing it to the wind, the breath. 00:40:44.14\00:40:46.51 Yes. 00:40:46.54\00:40:48.18 And, you know, worship can degenerate. 00:40:48.21\00:40:53.35 I don't even like to use that word, 00:40:53.38\00:40:54.75 but it can degenerate into only rules, 00:40:54.78\00:40:59.19 only formalism, only the truth. 00:40:59.22\00:41:03.96 And we hit people over the head with them. 00:41:03.99\00:41:06.09 If we don't have the life giving spirit, 00:41:06.13\00:41:10.17 the breath of God is it were in our hearts 00:41:10.20\00:41:13.03 and in our lives, everything else means nothing. 00:41:13.07\00:41:15.60 Absolutely. 00:41:15.64\00:41:16.97 You know, so to experience that with being born again 00:41:17.01\00:41:21.08 and having the spirit, having the Holy Spirit. 00:41:21.11\00:41:24.41 If we don't have that, you know, 00:41:24.45\00:41:26.18 I remember I was 19 and I had grown up in a home. 00:41:26.21\00:41:31.22 This is no criticism. 00:41:31.25\00:41:32.59 I have the best parents in the world, 00:41:32.62\00:41:35.22 but they did not know Jesus. 00:41:35.26\00:41:37.39 That's just the honest fact. 00:41:37.43\00:41:39.56 And religion was all about 00:41:39.59\00:41:42.23 what you did and what you couldn't do 00:41:42.26\00:41:44.43 and that's what my experience was. 00:41:44.47\00:41:46.33 And I remember being 19 in church. 00:41:46.37\00:41:49.00 So this was in church 00:41:49.04\00:41:50.47 and the organ playing my life of scarlet, 00:41:50.51\00:41:54.04 my sin and woe covered with his life whiter than snow. 00:41:54.08\00:41:58.35 And I remember thinking, 00:41:58.38\00:41:59.71 you mean, it's not all what I have to do. 00:41:59.75\00:42:02.78 You mean, I, my salvation is not dependent on me 00:42:02.82\00:42:06.96 doing this and doing that. 00:42:06.99\00:42:08.32 It's leaning on the blood of Jesus 00:42:08.36\00:42:10.23 and the spirit working in me to equip and empower me 00:42:10.26\00:42:16.43 'cause clearly we are to walk in obedience, 00:42:16.46\00:42:19.83 but that's because of the spirit. 00:42:19.87\00:42:21.20 That's right. Amen. 00:42:21.24\00:42:22.57 So to me that whole sense of worship is... 00:42:22.60\00:42:25.34 that joy in His presence, 00:42:25.37\00:42:29.14 walking in that combined with the truth. 00:42:29.18\00:42:32.91 Praise the Lord. 00:42:32.95\00:42:34.92 You know, I found this quote here 00:42:34.95\00:42:37.52 and we're gonna get to John 3. 00:42:37.55\00:42:38.89 Actually, this is based upon the conversation 00:42:38.92\00:42:41.12 that Jesus had with Nicodemus in John Chapter 3. 00:42:41.16\00:42:44.66 And as Jill brought up beautifully, 00:42:44.69\00:42:46.26 you know, he reverences the wind. 00:42:46.29\00:42:48.03 And, of course, this conversation 00:42:48.06\00:42:49.40 is one of my favorites. 00:42:49.43\00:42:50.77 One of my favorite, probably my, 00:42:50.80\00:42:52.13 one of my favorite chapters in all the Bible. 00:42:52.17\00:42:53.77 In fact, Mrs. White says in her writings 00:42:53.80\00:42:56.17 that salvation is probably made no clearer 00:42:56.20\00:42:59.84 in any other part of scripture 00:42:59.87\00:43:01.44 than right there in John Chapter 3 00:43:01.48\00:43:02.98 in that conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus. 00:43:03.01\00:43:05.61 And, of course, you can imagine, 00:43:05.65\00:43:06.98 you know, Nicodemus this Pharisee, 00:43:07.02\00:43:08.45 he's got all this head knowledge, 00:43:08.48\00:43:10.09 he's got the Scripture tucked away in his mind. 00:43:10.12\00:43:11.92 I mean, this guy was, was a scholar of the highest, 00:43:11.95\00:43:14.92 and he's coming to Jesus again 00:43:14.96\00:43:16.29 with this kind of mentality of, you know, 00:43:16.32\00:43:18.49 I think I got it figured out, but I just wanna know 00:43:18.53\00:43:20.40 who you are and what you're doing here 00:43:20.43\00:43:22.06 and what your purpose is? 00:43:22.10\00:43:23.43 And Jesus just drops a bomb on him and says, 00:43:23.47\00:43:25.33 yeah, look man, you can't enter the kingdom of God 00:43:25.37\00:43:28.04 unless you're born again. 00:43:28.07\00:43:30.44 And, of course, this brother's mind as probably 00:43:30.47\00:43:32.81 many people would go to, 00:43:32.84\00:43:34.18 his goes immediately to the flesh, to the carnal, 00:43:34.21\00:43:37.95 to the physical, to the literal. 00:43:37.98\00:43:39.38 And he immediately went, well, wait a second. 00:43:39.41\00:43:40.92 I got to go get back in my mother's womb and be reborn. 00:43:40.95\00:43:44.12 That's impossible. 00:43:44.15\00:43:45.49 And Jesus is like, no, now, wait a second. 00:43:45.52\00:43:47.76 You're talking about literal things, 00:43:47.79\00:43:49.29 the fleshly things, I'm talking about spiritual things. 00:43:49.32\00:43:53.26 And so, this beautiful conversation 00:43:53.29\00:43:55.13 when Jesus says, you know, 00:43:55.16\00:43:56.50 consider the wind, you know, you don't see it. 00:43:56.53\00:43:58.47 You know, you may hear it. 00:43:58.50\00:44:00.70 You may feel it, but you don't know 00:44:00.74\00:44:02.07 where it's coming and where it's going. 00:44:02.10\00:44:03.44 So also is the work of the Holy Spirit 00:44:03.47\00:44:05.97 when it comes and blows through your heart, right? 00:44:06.01\00:44:08.38 It just makes a beautiful transformation 00:44:08.41\00:44:10.11 in your life. 00:44:10.15\00:44:11.48 And so I found this quote from Homeward Bound, 00:44:11.51\00:44:14.08 page 88, based on the concept of Jesus 00:44:14.12\00:44:17.79 presenting this being born again 00:44:17.82\00:44:19.75 from a spiritual perspective. 00:44:19.79\00:44:21.56 Again, we're talking about worshiping the Lord in spirit. 00:44:21.59\00:44:24.23 So keep that in mind when I read this quote here, 00:44:24.26\00:44:26.13 Homeward Bound, page 88, beautiful. 00:44:26.16\00:44:29.53 Speaking of Nicodemus and Jesus conversation 00:44:29.56\00:44:32.23 in John 3, she says, 00:44:32.27\00:44:33.70 "Here is declared the same truth that Jesus 00:44:33.74\00:44:36.37 had revealed to Nicodemus when He said, 00:44:36.40\00:44:38.67 'Except a man be born from above, 00:44:38.71\00:44:40.51 he cannot see the kingdom of God.' 00:44:40.54\00:44:43.75 Not by seeking a holy mountain or a sacred temple 00:44:43.78\00:44:47.65 are people brought into communion with heaven. 00:44:47.68\00:44:50.55 Religion is not to be confined to external forms 00:44:50.59\00:44:53.56 and ceremonies. 00:44:53.59\00:44:55.16 The religion that comes from God is the only religion 00:44:55.19\00:44:58.16 that will lead to God. 00:44:58.19\00:45:00.16 In order to serve Him aright, 00:45:00.20\00:45:02.36 we must be born of the divine Spirit. 00:45:02.40\00:45:06.43 This will purify the heart and renew the mind, giving, 00:45:06.47\00:45:10.27 " so this Romans 12, " 00:45:10.31\00:45:11.64 renew the mind giving us a new capacity 00:45:11.67\00:45:15.14 for knowing and loving God. 00:45:15.18\00:45:17.15 It will give us a willing obedience," 00:45:17.18\00:45:20.22 I think of Honey, 00:45:20.25\00:45:23.59 "It will give us a willing obedience 00:45:23.62\00:45:25.55 to all His requirements. 00:45:25.59\00:45:27.99 This is true worship. 00:45:28.02\00:45:31.19 It is the fruit of the working of the Holy Spirit. 00:45:31.23\00:45:35.76 By the Spirit every sincere prayer is indited, 00:45:35.80\00:45:40.00 and such prayer is acceptable to God. 00:45:40.04\00:45:42.70 Wherever a soul reaches out after God, 00:45:42.74\00:45:45.47 there the Spirit's working is manifest, 00:45:45.51\00:45:48.54 and God will reveal Himself to that soul. 00:45:48.58\00:45:51.11 For such worshipers He is seeking. 00:45:51.15\00:45:54.68 He waits to receive them, and to make them His sons 00:45:54.72\00:45:58.49 and daughters worshiping him in spirit." 00:45:58.52\00:46:02.22 Brother, Greg, you got something to add to that? 00:46:02.26\00:46:03.59 You know, I was just going back to this 00:46:03.63\00:46:04.96 'cause this is powerful to me. 00:46:04.99\00:46:06.33 I highlighted it, you know, this, it's a great quote, 00:46:06.36\00:46:08.10 but it says, "Wherever a soul reaches out after God, 00:46:08.13\00:46:11.60 that's worship to God." 00:46:11.63\00:46:13.23 I love that. Absolutely. 00:46:13.27\00:46:15.14 That is powerful. 00:46:15.17\00:46:16.50 You know, because someone right now may be saying, 00:46:16.54\00:46:17.87 okay, I'm just a wreck. 00:46:17.91\00:46:19.24 I'm a mess. 00:46:19.27\00:46:20.61 This worship thing 00:46:20.64\00:46:21.98 I'm not understanding all this stuff. 00:46:22.01\00:46:23.35 Okay, just reach out to God. You know what you've just done? 00:46:23.38\00:46:24.71 You just worshiped God. 00:46:24.75\00:46:26.08 Love that, the simplicity. 00:46:26.11\00:46:27.45 You know, it's just, 00:46:27.48\00:46:28.82 that's powerful and that's beautiful, 00:46:28.85\00:46:30.19 because when you think of God, it's like, whoa, 00:46:30.22\00:46:31.55 that can get kind of complicated. 00:46:31.59\00:46:32.92 I don't know, God, I don't even know 00:46:32.95\00:46:34.46 how to get this relationship going. 00:46:34.49\00:46:35.82 Well, just reach out to Him. 00:46:35.86\00:46:37.19 And then it says right here, it's just beautiful. 00:46:37.23\00:46:38.56 It says, you can reach out, there's a spirit of working. 00:46:38.59\00:46:39.93 Okay. 00:46:39.96\00:46:41.30 And then it says for such worshipers He, 00:46:41.33\00:46:43.30 God is seeking for. 00:46:43.33\00:46:44.67 Wow. That's right. 00:46:44.70\00:46:46.03 So what we have to do is reach out to Him 00:46:46.07\00:46:47.40 'cause then you start to wonder, okay, lifestyle, 00:46:47.44\00:46:48.77 you talked about lifestyle. 00:46:48.80\00:46:50.14 Okay. Well, man, what does that mean? 00:46:50.17\00:46:51.51 Just reach out to God throughout the day. 00:46:51.54\00:46:53.11 You know, God, hey, you know, I'm just... 00:46:53.14\00:46:54.54 dealing with little struggle, little discouraged right now, 00:46:54.58\00:46:56.11 reach out to God. 00:46:56.14\00:46:57.48 And to him, that's like, wow, that's the relationship, 00:46:57.51\00:47:00.08 then that's that love, right? 00:47:00.12\00:47:01.45 I got that love. 00:47:01.48\00:47:02.82 And it's just, wow, what a great cycle circle. 00:47:02.85\00:47:04.19 That's so true. 00:47:04.22\00:47:05.55 And, you know, you guys mentioned earlier 00:47:05.59\00:47:07.72 and Jill you mentioned in your testimony 00:47:07.76\00:47:09.29 when you said when you was 19, 00:47:09.32\00:47:10.66 about how, you know, you wanna do right 00:47:10.69\00:47:14.56 and you want to live right. 00:47:14.60\00:47:15.93 But it seems like all these rules and stuff 00:47:15.96\00:47:17.30 were in the way. 00:47:17.33\00:47:18.67 And I think that's one of the biggest problems 00:47:18.70\00:47:20.04 when it comes to worship that a lot of people do allow 00:47:20.07\00:47:21.44 to get in the way and they don't really know 00:47:21.47\00:47:23.10 how to get around it is that they're seeking for the fruit 00:47:23.14\00:47:25.91 of the spirit without first seeking for the spirit. 00:47:25.94\00:47:28.84 That's right. Well, that's right. 00:47:28.88\00:47:30.21 We can't worship God in spirit, 00:47:30.25\00:47:33.68 if we don't first have the spirit. 00:47:33.72\00:47:35.72 That's good. 00:47:35.75\00:47:37.09 And so like, we oftentimes seek for the fruit first, 00:47:37.12\00:47:40.16 before we seek for the spirit, 00:47:40.19\00:47:41.52 but it's called the fruit of the spirit. 00:47:41.56\00:47:43.06 If you have the spirit, then you'll have the fruit. 00:47:43.09\00:47:45.19 Well, we get it backwards and we wanna have the fruit 00:47:45.23\00:47:46.93 before having the spirit. 00:47:46.96\00:47:48.30 And we think we get the fruit, 00:47:48.33\00:47:49.66 and then God will give us the spirit. 00:47:49.70\00:47:51.03 That's not how it works. 00:47:51.07\00:47:52.43 I love that. 00:47:52.47\00:47:53.80 It makes me think of Romans 8:1. 00:47:53.84\00:47:55.50 And Romans 7 is that whole conflict between... 00:47:55.54\00:47:58.91 That's good. Okay. 00:47:58.94\00:48:00.31 I wanna do this and I wanna do right, 00:48:00.34\00:48:01.91 but yet I ended up doing this over here. 00:48:01.94\00:48:04.15 And yet the things I don't want to do, 00:48:04.18\00:48:06.15 those are the things I end up doing. 00:48:06.18\00:48:08.02 And Roman 7 ends with. 00:48:08.05\00:48:10.02 So then, "Oh, wretched man who shall deliver me 00:48:10.05\00:48:13.76 from this body of death." 00:48:13.79\00:48:15.12 Almost at the end of Romans 7. 00:48:15.16\00:48:16.49 And then Romans 8:1 says, 00:48:16.52\00:48:18.79 "There is therefore now no condemnation 00:48:18.83\00:48:20.60 to those who are in Christ Jesus." 00:48:20.63\00:48:22.00 If you stop there, you think, okay, wait a minute. 00:48:22.03\00:48:24.43 But it doesn't end there. It continues. 00:48:24.47\00:48:26.57 It says, "There is no condemnation 00:48:26.60\00:48:29.10 to those who are in Christ Jesus, 00:48:29.14\00:48:30.47 who do not walk according to the flesh, 00:48:30.51\00:48:32.71 but according to the spirit, 00:48:32.74\00:48:35.08 for the law of the spirit of life in Christ Jesus 00:48:35.11\00:48:37.51 has made me free from the law of sin and death. 00:48:37.55\00:48:39.98 That's inviting the spirit first, 00:48:40.02\00:48:42.75 then the fruit come. 00:48:42.78\00:48:44.45 That's right. Says the spirit first. 00:48:44.49\00:48:46.86 Amen. That is beautiful, wonderful. 00:48:46.89\00:48:48.62 I love this. 00:48:48.66\00:48:50.53 You know, we being led by the spirit 00:48:50.56\00:48:52.26 when we worship the Lord in spirit. 00:48:52.29\00:48:54.26 It's simply saying, God, Jesus is simply saying 00:48:54.30\00:48:56.33 to the woman at the well there, that you know, 00:48:56.36\00:48:58.13 you have to open yourself up completely to the leading 00:48:58.17\00:49:00.74 and guiding power of God's Spirit. 00:49:00.77\00:49:03.27 And I just kind of compiled a really quick list here 00:49:03.30\00:49:06.44 of the attributes, the powerful working 00:49:06.47\00:49:08.74 of the Holy Spirit in your life from a biblical perspective. 00:49:08.78\00:49:11.51 And this comes from John Chapter 14 00:49:11.55\00:49:13.62 and also John Chapter 16. 00:49:13.65\00:49:15.08 So if you go and read those chapters, 00:49:15.12\00:49:16.55 you can find these texts and these points there. 00:49:16.58\00:49:19.29 But Jesus makes it very clear that the Holy Spirit 00:49:19.32\00:49:21.52 will come to teach you all things. 00:49:21.56\00:49:23.32 According to John 14:26, 00:49:23.36\00:49:25.49 he will bring all things to your memory, right? 00:49:25.53\00:49:28.06 He wants to remind you of all of His holiness 00:49:28.10\00:49:31.13 and His beautiful loving character 00:49:31.17\00:49:33.13 at all times, John 14: 26. 00:49:33.17\00:49:35.30 Also, he will reprove the world of sin. 00:49:35.34\00:49:38.24 This is a spiritual thing, right? 00:49:38.27\00:49:40.21 John 16:8. 00:49:40.24\00:49:41.61 And, of course, he will guide you into, 00:49:41.64\00:49:43.95 and this sets us up for our next point 00:49:43.98\00:49:45.31 with the remaining time 00:49:45.35\00:49:46.68 we have left that pray for that clock, 00:49:46.72\00:49:48.05 it's ticking away right now. 00:49:48.08\00:49:49.65 He says, "He will guide you into all truth." 00:49:49.68\00:49:52.85 Yes. Read John 16:13. 00:49:52.89\00:49:54.96 So notice the relationship. 00:49:54.99\00:49:57.96 He says, "You need to worship Him in spirit." 00:49:57.99\00:50:00.13 Wait a second. 00:50:00.16\00:50:01.63 But you also have to worship Him in truth, 00:50:01.66\00:50:03.83 but yet they're all so connected 00:50:03.87\00:50:05.50 because Jesus refers to in John 16:13. 00:50:05.53\00:50:09.24 He says, "However, when he, the spirit of truth has come, 00:50:09.27\00:50:13.31 he will guide you into all truth." 00:50:13.34\00:50:16.14 So let's kind of go into that before about, 00:50:16.18\00:50:18.21 I don't know we have about six or so minutes left here. 00:50:18.25\00:50:21.48 Worship Him in spirit. 00:50:21.52\00:50:23.08 That means I give Him my whole living life 00:50:23.12\00:50:26.15 to be led by the Spirit of God. 00:50:26.19\00:50:28.36 I want my whole life to be a reflection of that, 00:50:28.39\00:50:30.99 of the character of Jesus as expressed 00:50:31.03\00:50:33.23 and worked through me by the Holy Spirit. 00:50:33.26\00:50:35.43 But in order for us to be led by the spirit, 00:50:35.46\00:50:37.57 and if we're truly led by the spirit, 00:50:37.60\00:50:39.53 we will be led into all truth. 00:50:39.57\00:50:41.00 That's where Jesus says, "You must worship Him in truth. 00:50:41.04\00:50:44.27 So what does it mean to worship Him in truth? 00:50:44.31\00:50:47.64 And I think as Seventh-day Adventists, 00:50:47.68\00:50:49.38 we're kind of champions of this one, right? 00:50:49.41\00:50:50.85 We're proud of this one. 00:50:50.88\00:50:52.81 We love the truth and we love to share the truth. 00:50:52.85\00:50:56.92 And so what, what do you guys think of 00:50:56.95\00:50:58.62 when you think of worshiping Him in truth? 00:50:58.65\00:51:02.52 All right. 00:51:02.56\00:51:03.89 I guess I'll start and I go real first. 00:51:03.93\00:51:05.59 So, you know, when I think of this, 00:51:05.63\00:51:07.33 I think of, when we worship the Lord in truth, 00:51:07.36\00:51:10.37 we have to stick, make sure that we're worshiping Him 00:51:10.40\00:51:12.80 according to His Word, John 17:17, 00:51:12.83\00:51:15.87 Jesus prayer to the Father, sanctify them, 00:51:15.90\00:51:18.41 that is make them holy through thy truth. 00:51:18.44\00:51:20.81 Thy word is truth. 00:51:20.84\00:51:22.58 And so we have to worship God according to His Word. 00:51:22.61\00:51:25.68 And you know, this was the problem 00:51:25.71\00:51:27.08 with the Pharisees and all of the people of the day 00:51:27.12\00:51:29.82 that followed Jesus around all the time. 00:51:29.85\00:51:31.72 Mark 7:6-7, it says, 00:51:31.75\00:51:33.62 "He answered and said unto them, 00:51:33.66\00:51:35.19 Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, 00:51:35.22\00:51:37.46 as it is written, the people honoreth me 00:51:37.49\00:51:39.66 with their lips, but their heart," 00:51:39.69\00:51:41.93 there it is, "is far from me. 00:51:41.96\00:51:44.07 Howbeit in vain do they worship me." 00:51:44.10\00:51:46.84 Hold on a second. 00:51:46.87\00:51:49.60 You mean to tell me we can spend our life 00:51:49.64\00:51:52.74 or worship God in spirit. 00:51:52.77\00:51:55.71 But if we don't worship Him in truth, 00:51:55.74\00:51:57.11 it's considered vain worship. 00:51:57.15\00:51:58.48 Wow. That's really deep. 00:51:58.51\00:52:00.78 And this is what Jesus was communicating. 00:52:00.82\00:52:02.38 He says, howbeit in vain do they worship me teaching 00:52:02.42\00:52:06.05 for doctrines, the commandments of men? 00:52:06.09\00:52:08.12 And I think that's what separates true worship 00:52:08.16\00:52:10.36 from false worship is that 00:52:10.39\00:52:11.73 if we're following just mere traditions of men, 00:52:11.76\00:52:14.03 commandments of men 00:52:14.06\00:52:15.40 and not the truth of God's Word, 00:52:15.43\00:52:17.33 then our worship, although 00:52:17.37\00:52:19.43 we may be sincere about worshiping God with our life, 00:52:19.47\00:52:22.70 like Nadab and Abihu and many others 00:52:22.74\00:52:24.67 who were sincere about building that fire, 00:52:24.71\00:52:26.61 that worship is rejected by God. 00:52:26.64\00:52:28.74 And I think we need to be very careful 00:52:28.78\00:52:30.91 that we worship God in spirit and in truth through His Word. 00:52:30.95\00:52:33.45 Amen. 00:52:33.48\00:52:34.82 That's a good point, 00:52:34.85\00:52:36.18 worshiping God in spirit and truth. 00:52:36.22\00:52:37.55 You guys wanna add something to that, 00:52:37.59\00:52:38.99 worshiping Him in truth? 00:52:39.02\00:52:40.36 I'm just thinking about the truth aspect. 00:52:40.39\00:52:42.26 You know, that's like the doctrine. 00:52:42.29\00:52:43.63 Sure. Absolutely. 00:52:43.66\00:52:44.99 I like how, you know, 00:52:45.03\00:52:46.36 you're focusing on this family worship, 00:52:46.39\00:52:47.73 but combining the two together. 00:52:47.76\00:52:49.10 I mean, that is key. I mean, that's key. 00:52:49.13\00:52:51.60 'Cause you know, we can say just like in Nicodemus, 00:52:51.63\00:52:53.84 you know, we, hey, we got the truth. 00:52:53.87\00:52:55.20 We know we've got all this head knowledge 00:52:55.24\00:52:56.57 and everything, but to combine, 00:52:56.60\00:52:58.01 you know, the two together, because truth is powerful. 00:52:58.04\00:53:00.24 I mean, we all want to know the truth 00:53:00.28\00:53:01.68 that is in God's Word, 00:53:01.71\00:53:03.04 but to combine it with the spirit and truth, 00:53:03.08\00:53:05.11 making true worship and that's powerful 00:53:05.15\00:53:06.48 what you're reading about in vain, right? 00:53:06.51\00:53:08.45 I mean, my word that's, that's serious. 00:53:08.48\00:53:10.75 Absolutely serious. 00:53:10.79\00:53:12.12 So to combine the two together, it's fantastic. 00:53:12.15\00:53:14.29 Yeah. Amen. 00:53:14.32\00:53:15.66 It's beautiful. It is beautiful. 00:53:15.69\00:53:17.03 I think of this is scripture you had, 00:53:17.06\00:53:18.39 but I love the scripture. 00:53:18.43\00:53:19.76 This is 2 Timothy 4. 00:53:19.79\00:53:21.13 So Paul's writing to his son in the faith, right? 00:53:21.16\00:53:23.16 And this is, of course, right before he died. 00:53:23.20\00:53:26.94 And what does he say in 2 Timothy 4, 00:53:26.97\00:53:28.57 "I charge you therefore before God 00:53:28.60\00:53:30.51 and the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:53:30.54\00:53:31.91 who would judge the living and the dead 00:53:31.94\00:53:33.27 at his appearing in his kingdom." 00:53:33.31\00:53:34.91 So this would be Paul. 00:53:34.94\00:53:36.28 You can say his last will in Testament 00:53:36.31\00:53:38.01 right at the end of his life. 00:53:38.05\00:53:40.58 And he wants to express to his son, 00:53:40.62\00:53:43.05 Timothy saying, preach the word. 00:53:43.08\00:53:45.49 Verse 2, "Be ready or instant" King James says, 00:53:45.52\00:53:49.52 "in season and out of season, convince, rebuke, 00:53:49.56\00:53:51.99 exhort with all long suffering and teaching, 00:53:52.03\00:53:54.53 for the time will come 00:53:54.56\00:53:55.90 when they will not endure sound doctrine, 00:53:55.93\00:53:59.17 but according to their own desires, 00:53:59.20\00:54:00.77 because they have itching ears, 00:54:00.80\00:54:02.17 they will heap up for themselves teachers, 00:54:02.20\00:54:05.01 and they will turn their ears away from the truth 00:54:05.04\00:54:08.24 and be turned aside to fables." 00:54:08.28\00:54:10.45 I think just as it is vitally important 00:54:10.48\00:54:14.02 that we invite the spirit into our worship, 00:54:14.05\00:54:17.42 into our hearts, into our presentation of truth, 00:54:17.45\00:54:20.96 it is just as important, 00:54:20.99\00:54:22.86 that we do not substitute manmade traditions, 00:54:22.89\00:54:27.50 manmade commandments, manmade philosophies 00:54:27.53\00:54:31.93 for the truth and the Word of God. 00:54:31.97\00:54:34.34 That's right. We can soft pedal the truth. 00:54:34.37\00:54:37.57 We can try to water it down. 00:54:37.61\00:54:40.31 We can try to say, I'm afraid to share this. 00:54:40.34\00:54:42.71 And so I'm going this direction, 00:54:42.74\00:54:44.75 but it is vitally important that we are authentic 00:54:44.78\00:54:49.05 in what we present, 00:54:49.08\00:54:50.62 that everything in the Word of God, 00:54:50.65\00:54:52.82 all scripture is given by inspiration of God. 00:54:52.85\00:54:55.32 Amen. 00:54:55.36\00:54:56.69 And is profitable for doctrine, correction, 00:54:56.73\00:54:58.46 instruction and righteousness. 00:54:58.49\00:54:59.83 Why? 00:54:59.86\00:55:01.20 That the man of God may be perfect, 00:55:01.23\00:55:02.80 thoroughly equipped for every good work. 00:55:02.83\00:55:04.63 So what an important message and mission 00:55:04.67\00:55:08.00 to present the truth, but always in love. 00:55:08.04\00:55:10.67 Oh, that's wonderful. 00:55:10.71\00:55:12.04 You know, going through this, 00:55:12.07\00:55:13.41 we have like a couple of minutes left here 00:55:13.44\00:55:14.91 in our study together. 00:55:14.94\00:55:16.34 I just feel that at this time, you know, 00:55:16.38\00:55:17.91 there may be someone watching at home right now 00:55:17.95\00:55:19.31 that says, you know what? 00:55:19.35\00:55:20.68 I want to worship God not in vain, 00:55:20.72\00:55:23.39 but in spirit and in truth. 00:55:23.42\00:55:25.19 You know what? Jesus can give you the power. 00:55:25.22\00:55:27.59 He can give you the guidance, 00:55:27.62\00:55:28.96 the leadership that you need to worship Him genuinely 00:55:28.99\00:55:32.09 and spirit and in truth. 00:55:32.13\00:55:33.46 So, Brother Greg, why don't we have a... 00:55:33.50\00:55:34.90 We have about two minutes here. 00:55:34.93\00:55:36.26 Why don't you take about a minute and a half or so 00:55:36.30\00:55:37.63 and just offer up a prayer for all of us here, 00:55:37.67\00:55:39.67 for those at home watching that need to have that true, 00:55:39.70\00:55:43.07 genuine worshipful experience? 00:55:43.10\00:55:46.27 Father in heaven, what a blessing 00:55:46.31\00:55:47.64 it is to open Your Word. 00:55:47.68\00:55:49.71 And, Father, we truly want to worship You... 00:55:49.74\00:55:53.31 in spirit and in truth. 00:55:53.35\00:55:55.65 It's easy sometimes when we say, hey, 00:55:55.68\00:55:57.05 we've got truth and we're examples for you. 00:55:57.09\00:56:00.62 We're supposed to be, and we're beating people 00:56:00.66\00:56:01.99 over the head with truth and doctrine. 00:56:02.02\00:56:04.96 But, Father, we want to be able to have Your love in our hearts 00:56:04.99\00:56:09.16 to be able to share that with other people, 00:56:09.20\00:56:10.63 because You have loved us first 00:56:10.67\00:56:13.37 and You sent Your Son Jesus to die for us. 00:56:13.40\00:56:16.24 So as we're worshiping You, 00:56:16.27\00:56:18.51 we can reach out to You and say, "Jesus, 00:56:18.54\00:56:21.04 I need you right now." 00:56:21.08\00:56:22.64 So I just pray right now that if someone is, is struggling, 00:56:22.68\00:56:27.68 trying to figure out which direction to go, 00:56:27.72\00:56:29.68 not understanding even maybe how to worship You. 00:56:29.72\00:56:32.45 All that they have to do is just say, Jesus, 00:56:32.49\00:56:35.12 I invite You into my heart right now. 00:56:35.16\00:56:37.09 And that's the start of the worship. 00:56:37.13\00:56:38.93 And, Father, that You will lead us into all truth. 00:56:38.96\00:56:42.70 So, Father, thank You for this topic today. 00:56:42.73\00:56:44.43 Thank you that we can worship You. 00:56:44.47\00:56:45.80 Thank You for being the Almighty God, 00:56:45.83\00:56:47.40 the creator, the sustainer of each one of us. 00:56:47.44\00:56:50.41 And, Father, thank You that we have this opportunity 00:56:50.44\00:56:52.94 of opening Your Word today, in Jesus' name we pray. 00:56:52.97\00:56:56.38 Amen.
