No. 01:42 But we count them all as family. 01:43 So I'll let you introduce who we have. 01:44 Absolutely. 01:46 Part of the family of God and it's a privilege 01:47 to work here at 3ABN in a family ministry. 01:51 I have here on our right, 01:53 we have Dr. Senez and Sonia Rodriguez 01:56 and I have the privilege of working 01:57 with Sonia in the office and that's a blessing. 02:01 Tell me where you come from briefly 02:03 and what you are doing here at 3ABN. 02:05 I'm coming from Puerto Rico originally 02:07 we both and-- 02:09 but we came from Michigan a wonderful cold place. 02:16 To Southern Illinois. To Southern Illinois. 02:19 Yes, a little warmer. 02:20 That's right. That's right. 02:22 And well, we are glad to be here 02:24 working in the Pastoral Department. 02:27 The listening to people's questions 02:29 and people who call from all over the world 02:33 and we are glad to be here serving the Lord in this place. 02:36 And, pastor, real benefit too is that 02:38 you are bilingual as well. 02:39 That is correct. So that is a great ministry 02:40 in itself with the people that call in. 02:43 And you are a pastor and clinical psychologist. 02:45 That is correct. We are glad to have you. 02:46 And what about you, Sonia? 02:48 Well, I'm a retired teacher 02:50 but I'm coordinating the Latino production 02:53 and that's my job here at 3ABN. 02:55 Okay, that wonderful. 02:56 And we have the privilege of working together 02:58 in the office and that's a joy there. 03:00 Over here we have Anika and she is-- 03:03 maybe she is hungry I'm sure. 03:04 Anika and Christine Baker 03:06 and where are you from, Christine. 03:09 I'm originally from Sweden 03:10 but lived here in Southern Illinois 03:12 for six years now. 03:14 And work part-time for 3ABN. 03:17 And a fulltime mom. Yes, a fulltime mom. 03:20 Christine, she and her Joe work here and Joe is not here. 03:25 He couldn't be here. 03:26 He is traveling for 3ABN right now 03:28 that's why he is not on the set here with us 03:30 but, but we appreciate you and love and... 03:33 I'm glad that baby Anika is on here with us too. 03:35 Thank you. Yeah, that's really special. 03:36 And I know she can't be the whole time 03:38 but we are so glad. 03:39 Right. 03:41 He is giving us a few words. He is telling us. 03:44 And how old is she? 03:45 She is three months. 03:47 Three months old. 03:48 And Valera. 03:50 I'm Valera Babb and I'm originally from Oregon. 03:55 I took my training as a nursing 03:59 but that's not what I'm doing here. 04:00 I work for the Planned Giving and Trust department. 04:03 I have four children three of which work for 3ABN 04:07 and my husband also works for 3ABN right here. 04:10 My fourth child is not old enough 04:11 to be working here yet 04:13 so I'm sure she will be here soon. 04:15 It's a family ministry and that's such a blessing. 04:18 I love that about 3ABN. 04:20 You at home are part of our 3ABN family 04:23 and no matter where you are right now 04:25 we just want to invite you to call your friends, 04:27 call your neighbors, sit down and join us for family worship. 04:32 Today we are talking about 04:33 "Celebrating the Sabbath with Joy." 04:36 We are gonna start with a song, "Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus." 04:39 I think as we come into God's presence, 04:41 as we open up the Sabbath 04:44 or maybe this could be closing of Sabbath 04:46 we want to turn our eyes upon Jesus 04:48 and we have another special member 04:50 of our 3ABN family here 04:52 that's Caleb Dinzey and he is over there. 04:54 He is gonna be playing the guitar for us 04:57 and I know he doesn't have a mike here right now, 04:59 we can't ask him any questions 05:02 but Caleb is the son, 05:04 the younger son of John and Idalia Dinzey 05:06 and they are an important part of our 3ABN family 05:09 here as well. 05:10 So we appreciate you be on the guitar 05:12 and accompanying us today with your music. 05:13 So "Turn Your Eyes upon Jesus." 05:20 And join us at home too as we sing this song. 05:23 Turn your eyes upon Jesus 05:30 Look full in His wonderful face 05:37 And the things of earth will grow strangely dim 05:45 In the light of His glory and grace 05:52 We will sing that one more time but before we continue on, 05:54 you know, for those at home that may have 05:56 a Seventh-day Adventist church hymnal, 05:58 what hymn number is that? 05:59 It's number 290. 06:01 If you have your hymnal pull it out 06:03 if not the words are easy and they are wonderful. 06:06 Turn our eyes upon Jesus, 06:08 because when we do that the cares of the week, 06:10 the business of what went on in your week can pass away 06:14 or we can spend time at the feet 06:17 of Jesus in His presence. 06:18 Amen. Amen. 06:20 Turn your eyes upon Jesus 06:27 Look full in His wonderful face 06:34 And the things of earth will grow strangely dim 06:42 In the light of His glory and grace 06:50 Let's pray. 06:51 Father in heaven, Lord, we are so grateful 06:53 for Your holy Sabbath day that is now upon us. 06:57 And, Lord, as we come to worship you 06:59 we are thankful that as we turn our eyes upon you father 07:02 we can just cast the cares of this life away 07:06 at the foot of Your cross, Father, and let you carry them. 07:08 There is no need for us to worry about them 07:10 and carry all those on our shoulders. 07:12 Lord, we are thankful for the week 07:13 that we have passed through for being with us 07:16 and, Lord, as we enter into your holy Sabbath day 07:18 we are just grateful for those blessing 07:20 that you have promised to us. 07:22 In Jesus name we pray, amen. 07:24 Amen. Amen. 07:28 Well, our topic today is... 07:31 "Celebrating the Sabbath with Joy." 07:33 Yeah, absolutely. 07:34 And as we start out we wanted to look at a scripture, 07:37 our favorite scripture you all have dealing with the Sabbath. 07:40 So I don't know who wants to jump in and go first. 07:44 don't everybody talk at once. 07:45 Go for it. Christine. 07:47 I can share-- my text is Isaiah 58 and-- 07:51 Isaiah 58? 07:53 Yeah. 07:54 Let me jump over there. 07:55 Isaiah 58. 07:58 I actually went to Psalms 58, its Isaiah 58. 08:03 Verse 13 and 14. Oh, yes. 08:07 I will read part of 14, starting in 13. 08:11 "If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, 08:14 from doing thy pleasure on my holy day 08:17 and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, 08:22 honorable and shalt honor him, not doing thine own ways, 08:26 nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words 08:30 then shalt thou delight thyself in the Lord 08:32 and I will cause thee to ride upon the high 08:35 places of the earth, 08:37 and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father, 08:41 for the mouth of the Lord hath spoken it." 08:44 Amen. Amen. 08:46 Why did you pick that one? 08:47 Why does that one speak to you? 08:48 It speaks to me because it helps me realize what this, 08:55 what my focus should be. 08:56 Like, it says to call the Sabbath your delight 09:03 and not thinking of my own pleasures 09:06 and what is pleasing to me and making my own happiness 09:11 but it's pointing my focus to the Lord 09:15 and the joy that I can find in Him. 09:19 Amen. 09:21 Yeah, that's a great text, absolutely 09:23 and I like it too because it mentions about 09:25 like you said, making the Sabbath a delight. 09:28 And so that's great because the Sabbath is not just the day 09:30 which we are gonna talk more about this little later on 09:31 about a bunch of rules and dos and don'ts. 09:34 Its actually, God has it there for blessing for us. 09:37 Amen. Absolutely. 09:39 What do you have, Valera? 09:40 I have Luke 13:10-17 09:45 and I will read it then I-- 09:48 Luke 13? Luke 13:10-17. 10:01 Okay, it says, "Now He was teaching 10:02 in one of the synagogues on the sabbath 10:05 And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity 10:09 eighteen years, and was bent over 10:11 and could in no way raise herself up. 10:14 But when Jesus saw her, He called her to Him 10:17 and said to her, 'Woman, 10:19 you are loosed from your infirmity.' 10:22 And He laid His hands on her, and immediately 10:25 she was made straight, and glorified God. 10:28 But the ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, 10:31 because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath 10:33 and he said to the crowd, 'There are six days 10:36 on which men ought to work, 10:37 therefore come and be healed on them, 10:39 and not on the Sabbath day.' 10:41 The Lord then answered him and said, 'Hypocrite! 10:45 Does not each one of you on the Sabbath 10:48 loose his ox or donkey from the stall, 10:50 and lead it away to water it? 10:52 So ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, 10:56 whom Satan has bound- think of it for eighteen years, 11:01 be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath?' 11:04 And when He said these things, 11:05 all His adversaries were put to shame, 11:09 and all the multitude rejoiced for all the glorious things 11:13 that were done by Him." 11:15 You know, there are lot of things in that. 11:17 I'm a nurse so like kind of this, 11:19 you know, speaks to me. 11:20 When I was working as a nurse there were days 11:23 I worked on Sabbath, you know, in hospital 11:26 and that was doing God's work, 11:31 you know, helping with healing and I didn't see the immediate. 11:36 Sure. You can see that stand up-- 11:38 The immediate results always but it was nice to be know 11:42 that you were there and, you know, 11:45 following Jesus example in helping 11:48 with the healing on Sabbath. 11:49 And also it tells me, you know, how the rulers had made Sabbath 11:55 such a burdensome day and, you know 12:00 we are sticking to the rules and Jesus said, wait a minute, 12:03 you know, the Sabbath is more than that, 12:05 That's right. You know. 12:07 Well, I'm giving her freedom, I'm releasing her from this. 12:11 Yeah, in other words the leaders, religious leaders 12:17 had made this Sabbath a burden instead of a delight. 12:21 That's right. That's right. 12:23 As Jesus came to show us, them and us 12:28 the real purpose of the Sabbath is to be a delight 12:32 not only for us but also for other people. 12:34 For others, absolutely. 12:36 That's great. Amen. Amen. 12:37 Dr. Senez, what text do you have? 12:39 Well, I have a text that is a little bit long 12:43 but it is from Isaiah 56:2-7 12:49 and I'm reading from King James Version. 12:53 Isaiah 56:11? Twelve, 2 through 7. 12:56 Two through seven. Oh, 2 through 7. 12:57 56:2-7 and it says, 13:02 "Blessed is the man that doeth this, 13:06 and the son of man that layeth hold on it, 13:12 that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, 13:16 and keepeth his hand from doing any evil. 13:21 Neither let the son of the stranger, 13:25 that hath joined himself to the Lord, 13:28 speak, saying, The Lord hath utterly 13:34 separated me from his people, neither let the eunuch say, 13:39 Behold, I am a dry tree. 13:43 For thus saith the Lord unto the eunuchs 13:49 that keep my Sabbaths, and choose the things 13:52 that please me, and take hold of my covenant. 13:58 Even unto them will I give in mine house 14:03 and within my walls a place and a name 14:09 better than of sons and of daughters. 14:14 I will give them an everlasting name, 14:18 that shall not be cut off. 14:21 Also the sons of the stranger, 14:23 that join themselves to the Lord, to serve him, 14:28 and to love the name of the Lord, 14:30 to be his servants, every one that keepeth 14:35 the Sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant. 14:41 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, 14:46 and make them joyful in my house of prayer, 14:52 their burnt offerings and their sacrifices 14:56 shall be accepted upon mine altar, 14:59 for mine house 15:01 shall be called an house of prayer for all people." 15:08 I love that, I love that passage because 15:14 it clearly tells me even in the Old Testament 15:20 God never made any differentiation 15:24 between those who call them self God's people 15:30 and those who were because of their upbringing 15:35 or because of where they came from 15:37 they thought that they were not 15:39 but God says not so. 15:43 Anybody who accepts My Sabbath and keep it holy, 15:50 anyone who accepts me, 15:53 I will bring them into my house. 15:56 Amen. 15:57 That's a precious passage. Absolutely. 15:59 But there is something more. Okay. 16:01 It says that it will give them a name better. 16:07 Amen. Amen. 16:10 Than sons and daughters. 16:14 And you think what could be better than that? 16:16 I mean, you know, when I think about that what is better than 16:19 that being a son and daughter, 16:21 children of the King. 16:23 So praise God no matter where we are, no matter what-- 16:26 no matter where we've grown up, you know, 16:28 no matter what circumstance were in God says, 16:32 I love you. 16:33 I want to invite you to keep my Sabbath day. 16:39 We want to extend that to you. 16:40 Maybe you just flip the channel and you head about the Sabbath 16:43 just now for the first time, invite you to study, 16:46 to open up your Bible 16:47 and to study about the Sabbath 16:49 is tremendous blessing from keeping the Sabbath. 16:51 Absolutely. Yes. 16:53 Sonia. 16:55 Okay, my verse that I really like 16:58 is in Ezekiel 20:12. 17:01 Ezekiel 20:12. Ezekiel 20:12. 17:11 Verse 12 and it reads like that. 17:15 "I also gave them My Sabbaths to serve as a sign 17:20 between Me and them, 17:22 so they will know that I am the Lord 17:26 who sets them apart as holy." 17:29 Amen. Amen. 17:31 So there is a lot that you can talk 17:32 about that and it taught me how God separated the Sabbath 17:38 and make it-- He wanted for us to make sure 17:43 we use that as a special day for resting, 17:47 for enjoying, visiting with people 17:52 or spending time with our friends from church. 17:57 I always think that and need a planning 18:01 will help me to enjoy 18:04 and feel that the Sabbath is different 18:06 and I know some people say, well, 18:08 but that's a little bit a too much. 18:10 But a little planning of, you know, 18:13 what activities can I do in Sabbath, 18:15 who will I visit, what will I cook. 18:18 I like cooking so for me that is a special moment 18:21 for a special dinner 18:23 and I never know who I'm cooking for. 18:28 Sometimes I know sometimes I don't 18:30 but I enjoy that and I think God bless all the effort 18:34 you make to make that Sabbath special. 18:37 Yeah, absolutely. 18:38 And I enjoy it and for me it's the joy. 18:40 Yeah, that's need to says I gave them my Sabbaths 18:43 to be a sign, that's great. 18:45 A sign and exactly. 18:48 My text is it comes Psalms 119,165 18:53 and it actually doesn't say anything about the Sabbath 18:56 in the text so its kind of wired 18:58 but it mentions the law. 19:00 So 165 says, "Great peace have they which love thy law" 19:06 or your law "and nothing shall offend them." 19:09 So I like this text because by keeping the law of God 19:12 which the Sabbath is part of the Ten Commandments, 19:14 the law of God great peace have-- 19:16 I know, I have a lot of peace 19:18 when I keep the Sabbath day holy but also well, 19:21 we are talking about joy on the Sabbath day. 19:23 So to me that text means something to me 19:24 because by keeping God's law there is a lot of peace 19:27 and joy by obeying what God tells us to do. 19:29 Amen. Absolutely. 19:31 I've never thought of that as a Sabbath text. 19:34 Yeah, well, because of the law. 19:35 Yeah. Yeah. 19:37 Well, it makes sense. 19:38 That's what my mom used to always quote 19:40 she start to get offended, you know. 19:41 Oh, yes. Okay. 19:43 It's not their problem, it's me. 19:45 Why I do use that text for that as well. 19:48 What do you have? 19:50 I have two and they are both actually what we would call 19:52 the fourth commandment, Exodus and Deuteronomy. 19:55 Exodus Chapter 20, remember Moses was up in the mount 19:59 and with God and God wrote His law 20:03 with His own finger on those tables of stone 20:05 and then Moses brought that down from the mount. 20:07 We won't read the whole thing and I'm sure 20:09 if you are familiar with the Sabbath commandment 20:12 we could quote it together. 20:13 So let's quote it together the fourth commandment. 20:16 "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 20:19 Six days shalt thou labor, 20:22 and do all thy work 20:24 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord 20:28 thy God, in it thou shalt not do any work, 20:32 thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, 20:36 thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, 20:39 nor thy cattlenor nor thy stranger 20:42 that is within thy gates. 20:44 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, 20:47 the sea, and all that in them is, 20:51 and rested the seventh day 20:53 wherefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day, 20:56 and hallowed it." 20:58 And what I want to look at in this verse of course, 21:00 we know it talks about keeping the seventh day holy 21:03 but I love it because it refers us back to creation. 21:07 We see back-- the Lord says in six days 21:10 I made heaven and earth. 21:11 Not a thousand years for each day of creation 21:13 and not we emerge somehow from some sort of ameba. 21:17 It says in six days, so the Sabbath every week 21:20 when Sabbath comes it reminds us that God made us, 21:25 that He created this world in the beginning. 21:27 And then if we jump over to Deuteronomy 5, 21:30 we won't quote the whole verse again. 21:32 But Deuteronomy 5 it refers back, 21:34 instead of going back to creation 21:36 it looks at a different aspect. 21:38 And so I just want to look at Deuteronomy 5, 21:41 the last verse here 15, Deuteronomy 5:15. 21:47 It has just quoted remember the Sabbath day, 21:49 the same thing in Exodus 20 and now it say 21:51 "And remember that you were a slave 21:54 in the land of Egypt, 21:55 and the Lord your God brought you out 21:58 from there by a mighty hand and by an outstretched arm, 22:02 therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep 22:05 the Sabbath day." 22:08 And to me this commandment reminds us that God 22:12 not only delivered Israel from bondage 22:14 God wants to deliver us. 22:17 The Sabbath is a memorial of creation 22:18 and of redemption, 22:20 the recreation that God wants to work 22:22 in our hearts and minds. 22:23 Amen. Amen. 22:25 You know, it's a blessing, you know, family worship is. 22:26 You know, at home when I grew up we always sang 22:29 "Day Is Dying in the West" that's what my family did. 22:32 And so Jill and I when we got married 22:35 over 13 years ago we decided well, 22:38 we don't want to "Day Is Dying in the West" 22:40 let's form our own tradition so we decided to make 22:43 our Sabbath song "Crowning Jewel of Creation." 22:46 Well, that song is not well known 22:48 so we are not gonna sing that today 22:49 for this family worship but we want to sing 22:52 a couple of more songs because of family worship 22:54 I'm sure all of you have done the same that music is a lot 22:57 a big part of family worship. 22:59 So, Caleb, let's do, let's sing how about 23:02 "There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today" do that one. 23:04 "There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today" 23:06 talking about joy and happiness. 23:08 And it's number 470 in your hymnal 23:10 if you have your hymnal. Yeah, that's right, hymnal 470. 23:12 "There Is Sunshine in My Soul Today." 23:20 There is sunshine in my soul today 23:25 More glorious and bright 23:30 Than glows in any earthly sky 23:34 For Jesus is my light 23:39 Oh, there's sunshine, blessed sunshine 23:45 When the peaceful happy moments roll 23:50 When Jesus shows His smiling face 23:54 There is sunshine in the soul Verse 2. 23:59 There is music in my soul today 24:04 A carol to my King 24:08 And Jesus listening can hear 24:13 The songs I cannot sing 24:18 Oh, there's sunshine, blessed sunshine 24:24 When the peaceful happy moments roll 24:28 When Jesus shows His smiling face 24:33 There is sunshine in the soul Last verse. 24:38 There is gladness in my soul today 24:42 And hope and praise and love 24:47 For blessings which he gives me now 24:51 For joys "laid up" above 24:56 Oh, there's sunshine, blessed sunshine 25:02 When the peaceful happy moments roll 25:06 When Jesus shows His smiling face 25:11 There is sunshine in the soul 25:17 Amen. Amen. 25:18 Now we have Jesus in the heart. 25:20 Oh, there is sunshine in the soul. 25:22 And let's sing "I Have the Joy, Joy, Joy." 25:24 Oh, that's a great song. This is not in the hymnal 25:25 but it is chorus I guess you could say. 25:29 So we actually printed off some words here 25:30 so we have them here. 25:32 You know, this is not an hymnal 25:33 but it is an easy song to catch on 25:34 if you don't know it. It is, sing with us. 25:36 Yes. 25:41 I've got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart Where? 25:46 Down in my heart! Where? 25:49 Down in my heart! 25:50 I've the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart Where? 25:55 Down in my heart to stay 25:59 And I'm so happy So very happy 26:04 I've the love of Jesus in my heart 26:08 I'm so happy So very happy 26:13 I've the love of Jesus in my heart 26:17 I've the love of Jesus, 26:19 love of Jesus down in my heart Where? 26:22 Down in my heart! Down in my heart! 26:26 I've the love of Jesus, love of Jesus down in my heart 26:31 Down in my heart to stay 26:35 And I'm so happy So very happy 26:39 I've the love of Jesus in my heart 26:44 And I'm so happy So very happy 26:48 I've the love of Jesus in my heart 26:53 I've the peace that passes understanding 26:56 Down in my heart! Where? 26:58 Down in my heart! Down in my heart! 27:02 I've the peace that passes understanding 27:04 Down in my heart! Where? 27:07 Down in my heart to stay 27:10 And I'm so happy So very happy 27:15 I've the love of Jesus in my heart 27:19 I'm so happy So very happy 27:24 I've the love of Jesus in my heart 27:30 Amen. Amen. 27:31 You all sounded good. Its fun to sing, isn't it. 27:33 I love this. Oh, yeah. 27:34 It's a blessing. I always like music. 27:36 It's such a big part of worship for sure. 27:38 Caleb, thank you. 27:39 Want to say thank you so much for joining us 27:40 and accompanying us with the music today. 27:42 Much blessing very much so. 27:44 Amen. 27:45 Well, out topic is of course 27:46 celebrating the Sabbath with joy 27:49 and we have some of the discussion questions 27:51 that we thought we would ask today, 27:52 well, this evening, Friday evening. 27:54 Absolutely and just jump in. 27:56 First question is, why should we celebrate 28:00 the Sabbath versus keeping the Sabbath? 28:04 Are they two different things or do you all think 28:07 they are the same thing? 28:08 Should we celebrate the Sabbath, 28:10 should we keep the Sabbath 28:11 or is that the same? 28:12 What do you all think? 28:14 What has occurred to me that at first I thought well, 28:19 there is, is basically the same thing. 28:22 However-- 28:23 Keeping the Sabbath and celebrating the Sabbath? 28:25 Exactly. 28:26 You know, when we came for the question 28:27 we thought is there a difference? 28:29 Yep, yep. There is. 28:30 What comes to my mind is let's go back to Jesus time. 28:34 Okay. 28:36 The Pharisees were very, very sure 28:41 that they will keep the Sabbath 28:43 so much so that they were so preoccupied 28:48 with every little thing that could not be done 28:51 or should not be done 28:53 that they made the Sabbath a burden. 28:57 So they were keeping it 28:59 but they were not enjoying or celebrating it. 29:02 Celebration... 29:06 includes a high level of happiness. 29:10 I'm glad for something 29:12 and when you look at the Sabbath 29:14 from the standpoint of 29:16 don't do this, don't do that, 29:18 don't do this or that it becomes a burden. 29:22 Yes. 29:23 Celebration is something different. 29:25 We come to celebrate, we come to enjoy the moment, 29:30 we come to be with a family in a very special way 29:35 and of course to receive 29:36 a very special blessing from the Lord 29:40 because that is His promise. 29:42 Well, if you think about it 29:43 as you were talking I was thinking, 29:45 well, you know, what is the Sabbath like Jill said 29:47 it's the birthday of the world. 29:49 I mean, you know, it celebrates the birthday. 29:51 I like that. Good thinking. 29:53 You know, so what do you do on birthdays, 29:55 you celebrate, you know. 29:56 That's true. 29:57 And so that's kind of natural 29:59 when you think of it in that context, 30:01 you know, its you are celebrating 30:03 the creation of the world. 30:04 God creating us, 30:06 He is recreating us in redemption 30:09 so we have a lot to celebrate. 30:11 Yeah, that's fantastic. 30:13 You know, well, there is the aspect also 30:15 I mean, because this will get I guess, maybe too deep 30:16 but there is the aspect 30:17 where we want to keep the Sabbath too. 30:19 It's not that, okay, we just celebrate it 30:20 and having no rules what we do, whatever we want to do. 30:23 God has set down some guidelines 30:25 how to keep the Sabbath. 30:27 But in keeping the Sabbath it don't want to be so rigid, 30:30 yeah, it's good thing versus like, 30:33 you know, I'm afraid to do anything 30:35 because it's I don't want to-- 30:36 You might break it. Exactly, yes. 30:38 I think it depends on what focus you have. 30:41 If you are having your eyes on Jesus 30:45 and the love for our Lord and Savior 30:50 through that you will have a joy to do 30:55 what He wants you to do. 30:56 And so you kind of use the Bible for your guidelines 31:00 like what is pleasing to God for me, 31:04 like what does He suggest that I do on the Sabbath. 31:07 Yes. That's great. 31:08 And when I keep my eyes on Him 31:11 and yeah, it's kind of natural to do 31:18 the things that are pleasing to Him 31:21 and I think that way you are keeping the Sabbath 31:25 while you are celebrating it. 31:27 Yes. Absolutely. Amen. Amen. 31:28 Yeah. That's well said. 31:30 I think we are morphing in the question too 31:31 and that's a good thing. 31:32 How can we incorporate more joy into our Sabbath keeping, 31:35 our Sabbath observance? 31:37 How do we do that, how do we make the Sabbath 31:39 a day of joy instead of a day of rules 31:42 and I think, Christine, I love what you just said 31:44 because to me it's a hard experience. 31:46 As we fall in love with Jesus 31:50 I think God, I have a whole 24 hours 31:53 to especially spend with You. 31:55 Now of course, we can spend everyday 31:57 with our Father in heaven 31:59 but in a special sense 32:01 God has put His holy stamp on that day, 32:04 His seal as you have mentioned, Sonia, 32:06 and I think that's a beautiful thing. 32:08 And I have experienced both side of the spectrum 32:12 where I have had Sabbaths around like, oh, 32:16 yeah, I'm not supposed to do this, 32:17 or I should do that. 32:20 And I can see or I felt that burden 32:24 I know and I thought, 32:26 you know, do I have to, okay, I will do that. 32:28 But I've also experienced the joy and the peace 32:34 of when I have connecting with the Lord 32:37 and where I've taken the time to actually 32:42 set aside my earthly burdens and spend that time with God 32:49 and that's I think, that's what He desires, 32:52 you know, that extra special time with us. 32:56 One of the things that we've been doing 32:58 to keep connected and to celebrate the Sabbath 33:01 is that we have been learning new hymns. 33:04 So at the beginning Senez was playing the saxophone 33:09 to learn the music 33:11 but then we started with the iPhones, 33:14 with the music, oh, you know, it has the music. 33:17 So we have been learning and it was like a goal for us 33:20 to learn all the hymnals of the-- 33:23 All the songs in the hymnal? 33:24 All the songs in the hymnal 33:25 and it has been a joy for us 33:28 because then Senez would teach some of that in the church 33:31 that we used to go. 33:33 That's a lot of songs. 33:34 Yeah. 33:35 But we will take one or two at a time. 33:38 But we will, you know, every song has a message for us 33:44 and we were like enjoying that. 33:46 That was our joy to learn this message 33:50 of these different songs. 33:52 Sometimes we just want by their title. 33:54 Another thing that we were doing 33:55 making a collection of the, of promises of the Bible. 33:59 And we were kind of organizing them by theme 34:03 and that was something that would give us 34:05 a lot of strength and guidance in our spiritual life. 34:14 Amen. And that's really good. 34:15 Another suggestions for our learning 34:18 hymnals or songs music ministers a lot to me 34:22 but I'm not very good at just opening 34:24 a hymnal and picking it by myself. 34:28 So what I did is I went to YouTube 34:31 and I hid in central study hour 34:34 and they would have always a few songs in the beginning 34:40 so I would learn those songs on YouTube 34:43 singing along they have the text and everything. 34:46 So that really helped. 34:47 Yes, absolutely. New things. 34:49 That's great. 34:50 I think, you know, looking at around her circle 34:52 at her family here we have different-- 34:55 we have different stages of life. 34:57 I think of, Dr. Senez and Sonia, 35:00 you all have grown kids. 35:03 Emptiness, basically emptiness. Emptiness. 35:04 Right, have little bit more. 35:06 Greg and I don't have any kids 35:08 and, Valera, you and Mike have several kids 35:11 and they are in various stages. 35:13 Some are grown, some are in the process. 35:14 They are still home, they are back home. 35:18 And, Christine, you and George just beginning with Anika. 35:21 So how would celebrating the Sabbath, 35:24 incorporating more joy into the Sabbath 35:26 how would that look different 35:28 depending on your stage of life? 35:32 Well, in our case, in our case 35:34 we don't have to call anybody to the table. 35:38 We are there and we, you know, we simply select 35:43 the different hymns that we want to learn 35:46 or I have brought some. 35:48 These days we are fortunate to have so much technology 35:53 at our disposal. 35:55 You can download an application with all the songs, 35:59 all the hymn completely. 36:01 I listen Spanish, we have both the old and the new hymn books 36:07 we have there with the, with the music and everything. 36:10 So that has been really a great, great blessing. 36:15 But of course there are sometimes 36:17 when we simply decide to repeat some verses. 36:22 See, how many verses that we can remember, 36:25 okay, memory. 36:26 And sometimes we can add one or two more, 36:31 you know, to the "collection" in our brain 36:34 and so those kinds of verses 36:37 become very much part of our life. 36:40 For instance when I was growing up 36:43 and that was not too long ago 36:44 but I was growing up in the house 36:48 we were 11 kids plus mom and dad and so on 36:54 and I always remember my father repeating 36:59 certain verses from the Bible 37:03 that even without me trying to learn them 37:08 I learned them, I memorized them. 37:11 And so they are really very, very meaningful to me. 37:16 Not only they had a great message 37:19 but also it reminds me of those good years 37:25 in my childhood. 37:28 And so I think that is to me 37:31 and actually my wife have memorized them 37:35 because we repeat them so much. 37:37 Amen. 37:39 And memorizing the scripture is not just 37:41 I'm gonna memorize it for something to do 37:44 but it's powerful. 37:46 It helps you in the midst of valley, 37:48 and the midst of temptation 37:49 and the midst of discouragement. 37:51 The Holy Spirit is going to bring 37:52 that back to your mind. 37:54 That's true. 37:55 And those words that you've put in 37:57 God's word never returns void. 37:58 The songs too. I know, when I was-- 38:01 when my children were young I taught, 38:04 you know, kindergarten cradle and I remember one instance 38:08 where in Sabbath school we were singing. 38:11 Now the song has left me. 38:15 The kid song. 38:16 Yeah, all the kid songs about, oh, He shut the lion's mouth. 38:21 You know, it's about Daniel 38:22 and how God shut the lion's mouth. 38:24 And then one evening somebody knocked on our door 38:27 and they said they had gotten stuck up the road 38:29 so Mike went out to help them 38:31 and I tend to be a kind of a paranoid person 38:33 but that song came back to me and it's a kid song 38:37 but it was a comfort to me to say, 38:39 God has shut the lion's mouth. 38:41 I knew if He can shut the lion's mouth 38:43 and protect Daniel He can be with my husband. 38:46 You know, so even learning the songs 38:49 and so many songs are based on scripture. 38:52 Maybe not really quoting it 38:53 but taking the thoughts from the scripture 38:57 and it stays in your mind easier 38:59 it seems like when it's a verse. 39:02 And so, you know, even little kid songs. 39:04 I think of "Jesus Loves Me," what a blessing that is. 39:08 Such a simple little song 39:10 and you think of it such high held song 39:12 but the message in that is just amazing. 39:15 So even when you have small children 39:18 and you are learning maybe the kid songs 39:20 or the scriptures that are shorter 39:23 for the children is still doing the parents, 39:27 you know, a lot of good. 39:29 You know, sometimes I think, I mean, I just being honest 39:31 I fallen into the trap where, 39:32 you know, life is so very busy. 39:34 I mean, it just seems like, you know, Sunday, Monday, 39:37 Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 39:38 it is just lik go, go, go, go, go 39:41 and Sabbath or Friday night 39:43 it comes around and its just like 39:45 I'm exhausted, you know. 39:48 And yes, I mean, rest is good. 39:49 You know, Christ wants us to rest 39:51 but I don't believe that necessary the Sabbath day 39:53 is a day for as people say lay activities all day long. 39:56 Yes, it will be honest I have rested on the Sabbath, 39:58 it's just like I'm so exhausted, 40:00 go to church in the afternoon, 40:02 yeah, I'm taking a nap. 40:03 You know, I try not to do that very often 40:05 but I believe that Jill and I well, we get a lot of 40:07 because, you know, again we don't have any children 40:10 but we like going and helping others 40:12 on Sabbath like visitation. 40:14 I know that we have in our church here, 40:16 we have had in the past some nursing home visitation. 40:19 I know, some small group go out do some music ministry 40:21 in the nursing homes and the-- 40:23 yeah, nursing homes in the afternoon. 40:25 I know just recently we do communion at our church 40:28 and we also like to go to shut-ins 40:30 and take community to shut-ins 40:31 we went with you and your husband Joe, 40:34 Anika, Jill and myself we went out, 40:37 oh, it's out to McLane borough which is what 40 miles, 40:40 oh, no, 40 minutes, 30 minutes from here 40:42 and I took communion to a shut-in 40:44 and that was shut-ins. 40:45 And so that was I don't know, I find a lot of joy from that. 40:48 You know, yes, it might be easier to just go home 40:50 and take a rest 40:52 but it's always a blessing to serve others. 40:54 And I'm thinking about the text that you read earlier, Valera, 40:57 about Christ went out 40:59 and I think Mark also talks about this. 41:01 Is it Mark and Luke about where Christ said doing good 41:04 on the Sabbath day and so-- 41:06 Actually you can look in the New Testament, 41:08 if you see all the things, 41:11 if you follow what Jesus did on Sabbath 41:13 much of it was preaching, teaching, healing, helping. 41:17 You know, it was a lot of giving of Himself 41:19 and you think-- I mean, He was bombarded all the time 41:23 and He had to take some time away 41:25 but, you know, if you really follow his example 41:27 and, you know, preparing through this family worship, 41:30 you know, kind of revealing things 41:33 I maybe think, boy, 41:35 you know, I need to be more intentional 41:37 about preparing for the Sabbath. 41:40 Oh, we think about cleaning our homes 41:42 and getting the meal prepared, getting our clothes ready 41:46 but really how about preparing for our, 41:48 you know, our hearts for that. Special time, 41:52 you know, and the Sabbath, 41:53 when I was thinking about I was like, 41:55 you know, the Sabbath it's a date. 41:58 You know, that has set aside this 24 hour period 42:01 to spend with us 42:02 and He asks us to set it aside to spend with Him. 42:05 And when you go out on a date there is preparation. 42:08 You know, depending on 42:10 which part of the couple you are 42:12 and what's your focus when you go on the date? 42:13 Are you focusing on what you can get out of it? 42:16 Well, some people do but, you know, really, 42:19 you are really you have to focus on the other person, 42:21 what can you do to bring them joy 42:26 and that time what can you do to get to know them better. 42:31 You know, and maybe relax and just enjoy their company. 42:34 And something you kind of translate 42:35 that to your experience with God 42:38 it brings a different twist to it. 42:41 You know, I think about it 42:43 okay, maybe I need to prepare more for my Sabbath. 42:45 It is easy to get into it, the routine-- 42:49 Yes, of life. Yes. Obvious. 42:51 Okay, Sabbath is here 42:52 I have been keeping Sabbath all my life, 42:54 it comes, it goes, you know, 42:56 but going through this I just saw, 42:58 you know, I need to start paying more intentional 42:59 again of preparing for Sabbath. 43:02 That's a good word I like that more intentional. 43:03 Intention. I love that word. 43:05 And I like the word balanced too. 43:08 I think we need to be balanced. 43:10 We can be extremely tired and we really need to rest. 43:15 Right. True. 43:16 And I think Jesus took some time 43:19 away from people to rest. 43:20 Yes, He did. 43:22 So we need to, you know, we do need to prepare. 43:25 I'm a planner I like to plan 43:29 but one of our experiences at Grand Rapids 43:32 was that a couple that 43:33 we would go on to Bible studies with them. 43:37 The issue with the Sabbath it was a difficult thing 43:40 to start working on Sabbath 43:42 and they took a long time 43:45 and we could have been discoursed. 43:48 We were at a point because they would go 43:50 every other Sabbath depending if they had to work or not 43:53 but at the end they made a decision. 43:55 It took them maybe three year 43:57 they made a decision and we enjoy them. 44:01 We enjoy just seeing them 44:03 how involved they are in the church 44:06 and what a blessing they are. 44:08 So we have to patient when we talk to others 44:13 but also a balanced. 44:16 We need to, yes, check who need something, 44:22 who didn't come to church, 44:23 visit or even a neighbor that needs help 44:27 but sometimes we do need to take some time away 44:30 and just enjoy being with Jesus. 44:33 Yeah, and with nature I think it's-- 44:35 Oh, that's a big one. I like to reside in nature. 44:36 That's a big one, the nature. 44:38 I was just thinking that because, you know, nature is 44:40 God's lesson book. 44:42 You know, and we see so much about God in nature. 44:45 And I think Greg is really good at that 44:48 getting now and he just says, Jilly, come out with me 44:52 and I like to go out 44:53 and we always like to walk on Sabbath 44:54 but he could just sit in a chair 44:56 and listen to the birds 44:58 and watch the deer come out or the baby horse. 45:00 And turn your cell phone off. 45:01 That's definitely. 45:03 And just spend that time communion with God and nature. 45:06 Well, Christine, what about you 45:08 because you are just beginning with Anika 45:10 so how does that work with 45:12 brining joy into the Sabbath with her? 45:13 Well, we incorporate her into our family worships 45:18 and we sing with together with her 45:23 and one thing that she really enjoys 45:25 is when Joel reads her stories. 45:30 And the other night 45:33 he was reading a story about Jesus, 45:37 how God gave us Jesus and her little feet were going 45:41 ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting, ting. 45:44 And when he turned the page and took book away from her, 45:48 you know, she would stop. 45:49 Yeah, that's adorable. 45:51 And as soon as he brought the book back to her 45:53 she went ting, ting, ting, ting and it's just sweet. 45:57 And she is only three months. Three months. 45:58 So, yeah. Yeah. 46:00 Absolutely. Well, I think that's great 46:01 because you are building that routine in her life 46:04 so that it's just, you know, part of-- 46:06 you don't want to be routine but that there is, 46:08 there is a reason why. 46:09 You know, she gets older and is able to reason, 46:11 you know, why we meet with God 46:13 and celebrate the Sabbath especially. 46:15 Yeah, I think growing up is harder for child 46:20 I think to really enjoy the Sabbath 46:23 but at least it was for me growing up 46:27 when I became an adult then I started working 46:30 and that's when I really saw the blessing. 46:34 God is looking out for me. 46:37 You know, He knows that I need to set it side sometimes 46:42 but we are so pushed and we drive ourselves 46:46 to insanity sometimes tying to accomplish things 46:50 but God says, no, you have to slow down, 46:55 you have to take time to rest and be with Me 47:02 and I'm so thankful for that. 47:04 And it's like He is giving me license 47:07 like I have the right 47:10 or I have the privilege to take this time-- 47:14 To forget about work. Yeah. 47:17 I don't have to do this and this and this. 47:19 Right. 47:20 I think we should always think it's a blessing. 47:24 Whatever we do on Sabbath, whatever we-- 47:27 its God promised that He will bless 47:31 the ones that are really taking that time away 47:34 we keep the Sabbath. 47:36 And I have to say a story about Senez. 47:39 When he was working in his very difficult school 47:45 when he was doing his Ph.D he-- 47:49 friends, all his colleagues 47:52 were busy studying on Sabbath. 47:54 I mean, they were studying the seven days of week, 47:57 the seven days and he will not. 47:59 He will take the Sabbath, enjoy his church. 48:03 It was like he forgot about everything. 48:07 So nasty then remember a thing 48:09 and he would always be this at the same level as the rest. 48:14 He was not losing anything by not studying on 48:21 or working on paper something on Sabbath. 48:24 He will take that day away completely. 48:27 We will do Bible studies, be sitting 48:29 whatever we had to do 48:31 and they were amazed, they were amazed. 48:35 I mean, that was the testimony how God bless 48:40 tremendously when we follow His word. 48:43 And think of how much less stress 48:45 He probably at the cross. Oh, yes. 48:47 You know, you think about it 48:48 He had that day off for His body 48:50 and His mind to be refresh and that's why God designed it. 48:53 He created it. 48:54 And the people's like oh, no, no, 48:56 I can't afford to get off that day of study, 48:59 they don't realize what a blessing it is 49:02 to let your body take time off, refresh and then come back. 49:06 It's a blessing. Absolutely. 49:07 It goes back to that Psalms 119, 49:09 "Great peace have they which love thy law." 49:11 So that's the great peace of loving God's law 49:13 which includes the Sabbath day. 49:15 You know, we want to get some prayer request before we end. 49:16 We do. 49:18 There is such blessing 49:19 in keeping the Sabbath, you know. 49:21 Such a blessing. 49:22 We want to encourage you at home 49:23 if you already do go to god and say I want to, 49:27 I want to get You know You better 49:29 as we've been talking here. 49:30 I want to experience You more so that therefore 49:32 I can gain an even greater blessing in the Sabbath 49:35 and if you don't keep the Sabbath 49:37 we encourage you to study it out 49:39 and to experience it for yourself. 49:41 It's an incredible blessing on the Sabbath. 49:44 Part of family worship is scripture sharing. 49:47 Music, be in His family, the word of God and prayer. 49:51 And we want to take some time in prayer. 49:53 We have some prayer request 49:54 that came into our 3ABN Pastoral Department 49:56 and we are just gonna go down the line 49:59 and each read I request. 50:02 And then we will spend some time 50:03 in prayer over these needs. 50:05 And I think this is important too 50:06 because, you know, you are part of our family 50:08 and when as a child Jill myself now 50:11 but, you know, we would kneel in the family circle 50:13 and we would bring up our little prayer request. 50:15 It could have been for my cat that was sick 50:17 or even maybe a toy that was broken 50:18 or something like that. 50:20 You know, as you grow older your prayer request change 50:22 but thank you for bringing or sharing your prayer request 50:25 with the 3ABN family because you are part of the family. 50:27 So we want to lift some of these up 50:29 and we have some here that we want to read before we pray. 50:33 You want to start, Dr. Senez? 50:34 Sure.
