I'm J.D. Quinn. 00:01:07.40\00:01:08.73 And we welcome you to 3ABN Today We have a treat today because 00:01:08.76\00:01:13.80 we have three young college students with us and we're going 00:01:13.84\00:01:18.47 to learn about their experience at Ouachita Hills College in the 00:01:18.51\00:01:24.85 beautiful Ouachita Hills area of Arkansas which is, what, 40 00:01:24.88\00:01:30.82 minutes southeast of Hot Springs and then Arkadelphia. How far 00:01:30.85\00:01:36.42 away are you from Arkadelphia? 00:01:36.46\00:01:37.96 About 40 minutes. 00:01:37.99\00:01:40.33 About 40 minutes. You guys are just drive out there in it. 00:01:40.36\00:01:44.20 Well let me introduce our very special guests. We're very 00:01:44.27\00:01:48.07 pleased to have Dr. Patrice Wright. It's so good to see you 00:01:48.10\00:01:52.24 again Dr. Wright. 00:01:52.27\00:01:53.61 It's a pleasure to be here and I am the academic deal at Ouachita 00:01:53.64\00:01:58.81 I also lead the college as well. 00:01:58.85\00:02:00.88 That must be quite a challenge but I know you're a woman of 00:02:00.92\00:02:06.22 prayer and you are counting on the Lord. 00:02:06.25\00:02:10.46 I am and I always believe that when we're asked to lead we have 00:02:10.49\00:02:13.70 to actually ask God to be the one that guides the school. So I 00:02:13.73\00:02:17.80 have allowed God to lead and guide the school because that's 00:02:17.83\00:02:21.20 the way to go. 00:02:21.24\00:02:22.90 Amen. And that's what we all need to learn in our lives 00:02:22.94\00:02:24.91 period. (It is) And then we have Lowell Jenks. Lowell what do you 00:02:24.94\00:02:29.18 you do for Ouachita Hills College? 00:02:29.21\00:02:30.88 I'm a freshman staff member. I spent 10 weeks there setting 00:02:30.91\00:02:34.68 up the mechanic's program for small engines and will begin 00:02:34.72\00:02:38.29 teaching it in August. 00:02:38.32\00:02:40.26 You know what, I was talking with Lowell in the green room 00:02:40.29\00:02:44.46 and I said the idea that they're teaching small engine repair 00:02:44.49\00:02:48.26 in the vocational school. This is an academic college but they 00:02:48.30\00:02:52.73 also have a vocational area. They're very heavy into that 00:02:52.77\00:02:57.04 spiritual and physical development of the kids. 00:02:57.07\00:03:00.98 Every single time we have interviewed a missionary you 00:03:01.01\00:03:06.55 know what they come up with right away, boy, we're learning 00:03:06.58\00:03:11.22 how to repair engines on the ground and it's wonderful 00:03:11.25\00:03:14.79 that...whose idea was this? 00:03:14.82\00:03:18.76 The Lord's. 00:03:18.79\00:03:20.13 But you've been a missionary in many places. Tell us a 00:03:20.16\00:03:24.00 little. 00:03:24.03\00:03:25.37 Well, it's hard to say. Which place you want me to start with? 00:03:25.40\00:03:28.50 I mean just kind of give us an overview. 00:03:28.54\00:03:31.84 Well I spent several years in 13 different countries. 00:03:31.87\00:03:37.05 Many of them were just short term mission trips but as long 00:03:37.08\00:03:41.38 as six years in the country of South Sudan, just my wife and I. 00:03:41.42\00:03:45.29 We've never been to 3ABN but we've been on 3ABN. 00:03:45.32\00:03:50.23 That's wonderful. Well I'm sure Ouachita Hills College is 00:03:50.26\00:03:54.40 excited to have you aboard. And that's such a great line of 00:03:54.43\00:03:58.73 study in a vocational school. Now! Thaw Htoo. You know I'm a 00:03:58.77\00:04:03.74 Texan. Thaw where are you from, when did you start school, what 00:04:03.77\00:04:08.41 year, etc.? 00:04:08.44\00:04:10.08 Yes. I was originally born in Thailand. We came to the U.S. 00:04:10.11\00:04:13.45 when I was about five years old. Before I started attending 00:04:13.48\00:04:18.09 Ouachita I attended a public college. What was going on was I 00:04:18.12\00:04:23.09 was learning religion but the building where we were learning 00:04:23.12\00:04:27.66 religion was off campus, but the credit goes towards the school 00:04:27.70\00:04:30.30 itself. So then I heard about the school and I decided 00:04:30.33\00:04:33.74 to come here. The Lord led here and I transferred all my credits 00:04:33.77\00:04:36.87 Ouachita Hills. I'm a senior attending Ouachita Hills 00:04:36.91\00:04:41.18 studying Theology. 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.24 Wonderful. Well congratulations on that. And Inara Miller, right 00:04:43.28\00:04:47.78 (Yes ma'am) Tell us about you. Where do you come from? 00:04:47.82\00:04:50.82 Well, my name is Inara. I'm from the Bahamas and my family and I 00:04:50.85\00:04:55.19 heard about this school over 14 years ago from canvassers they 00:04:55.22\00:04:59.36 met in Florida. And so God has just opened the way for us to, 00:04:59.39\00:05:03.87 my sister and I, to attend the school. And yeah it's been great 00:05:03.90\00:05:07.00 So what is your area of study? 00:05:07.04\00:05:09.54 Secondary education. 00:05:09.57\00:05:11.11 And you want to teach what grade? 00:05:11.14\00:05:12.74 High school students. 00:05:12.77\00:05:14.11 High school students. You know when we're talking about getting 00:05:14.14\00:05:18.71 a degree and teaching at Ouachita Hills, Ouachita Hills 00:05:18.75\00:05:22.22 is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian school. So the focus 00:05:22.25\00:05:28.26 is on presenting Christ whether it's in vocational, for 00:05:28.29\00:05:35.13 missionary, for education, whatever's going on, so when she 00:05:35.16\00:05:38.57 says she wants to be a secondary high school teacher, she's 00:05:38.60\00:05:45.77 saying a high school teacher of Christianity too. So then we 00:05:45.81\00:05:49.28 have Oscar Ortiz. Tell me about yourself. 00:05:49.31\00:05:52.41 Yeah, I'm from California, and I heard about this school through 00:05:52.45\00:05:56.58 one of the college graduates actually. And I decided to come 00:05:56.62\00:06:01.09 for the academy and I'm now in the college. 00:06:01.12\00:06:04.89 Okay so you were there your last year of high school. What are 00:06:04.93\00:06:09.56 you studying. 00:06:09.60\00:06:10.93 Right now I'm unsure but I'm leaning towards either theology 00:06:10.97\00:06:15.37 or education. 00:06:15.40\00:06:17.24 Wonderful. Just a lot of prayer, Oscar, a lot of prayer. Okay we 00:06:17.27\00:06:21.24 would like to put up a graphic just right off the bat because 00:06:21.28\00:06:24.78 one thing that's beautiful about Ouachita Hills College beyond 00:06:24.81\00:06:33.22 their campus is their prices. So tell us about the areas of focus 00:06:33.25\00:06:38.86 and we've got a graphic that will show the price for the 00:06:38.89\00:06:41.96 quarter. 00:06:42.00\00:06:44.43 Right. What we do here at Ouachita is that we offer 00:06:44.47\00:06:49.27 courses like a bachelors in Theology, a bachelors in 00:06:49.30\00:06:54.08 Christian secondary education, a bachelors in Christian 00:06:54.11\00:06:58.41 elementary education. We also have a new program that 00:06:58.45\00:07:01.02 we're going to offer. 00:07:01.05\00:07:02.38 It's a one-year certificate program in small 00:07:02.42\00:07:06.69 engines and then we have another program which is an 00:07:06.72\00:07:11.06 associate degree in accounting. So those are the programs that 00:07:11.09\00:07:15.63 have at Ouachita Hills College. 00:07:15.66\00:07:18.90 So your focus is not just on academics but also on... 00:07:18.93\00:07:26.04 Vocational. We also have vocational so we have a number 00:07:26.07\00:07:27.94 of vocational programs. We offer courses in electrical, just 00:07:27.98\00:07:35.35 electrical, just having students know how to wire things. And we 00:07:35.38\00:07:40.29 also have auto mechanics. In fact, just this quarter students 00:07:40.32\00:07:46.13 were able to do a certificate program in auto mechanics with 00:07:46.16\00:07:49.46 it is up to them whether they wanted to do it that way or not. 00:07:49.50\00:07:53.64 So we also offer tiling which students are able to even... 00:07:53.67\00:07:57.97 in fact one student after learning it went home and she 00:07:58.01\00:08:01.14 tiled a whole room in her parents house. They were excited 00:08:01.18\00:08:06.45 It's so exciting to think about learning these vocations because 00:08:06.48\00:08:13.86 even if you get your college degree you want to know these 00:08:13.89\00:08:16.93 things. And there's the finished project. Now you have a 00:08:16.96\00:08:22.86 vocational clothing construction 00:08:22.90\00:08:27.67 Clothing construction. I know most people call it sewing but 00:08:27.70\00:08:29.20 we call it clothing construction and/or young ladies have done 00:08:29.24\00:08:34.91 three-quarters of this because the aim is _ and in 00:08:34.94\00:08:40.25 fact they made dresses and coats and the bags that we have for 00:08:40.28\00:08:46.35 college days instead of buying them online we made the bags to 00:08:46.39\00:08:50.03 put whatever we thought people were interested in. And also 00:08:50.06\00:08:56.87 young men did clothing construction as well. Thaw you 00:08:56.90\00:08:59.63 did something. Say something about what you did. 00:08:59.67\00:09:01.90 So when I was in a sewing class most of us didn't know anything 00:09:01.94\00:09:09.18 about sewing like what do we even press, but we learned. We 00:09:09.21\00:09:12.25 learned how to operate everything. The first thing we 00:09:12.28\00:09:15.32 were making was baby burps or something where you put the baby 00:09:15.35\00:09:19.09 burp over the shoulder. And that was really neat, 00:09:19.12\00:09:21.12 it was a learning process on how to sew, 00:09:21.16\00:09:23.73 how to put the needle, the thread, and all 00:09:23.76\00:09:26.29 of that. Also the second thing we made was pajama pants. We 00:09:26.33\00:09:29.36 made it from scratch. So we measured ourselves and then we 00:09:29.40\00:09:32.90 just got a layout and stuff. Then we just cut it and then we 00:09:32.93\00:09:39.34 sewed it. We did everything ourself. I actually tried it on, 00:09:39.37\00:09:42.24 they fit. 00:09:42.28\00:09:46.31 Wonderful. Now tell us about your cafeteria because people 00:09:46.35\00:09:50.39 rave about the cafeteria at Ouachita Hills and I believe 00:09:50.42\00:09:54.42 Inara you work in your cafeteria. Tell us about it. 00:09:54.46\00:09:58.09 So the kitchen at the cafeteria is one of my favorite 00:09:58.13\00:10:02.56 places on campus because we get to talk with everyone, have 00:10:02.60\00:10:06.87 little birthday celebrations and I like to cook and bake so it's 00:10:06.90\00:10:09.64 definitely one of my favorite places where I get to talk and 00:10:09.67\00:10:12.34 bake and work at the same time. 00:10:12.37\00:10:13.71 That's wonderful. 00:10:13.74\00:10:15.08 I've spent years in school campuses, 60-some years, and 00:10:15.11\00:10:19.88 I've never eaten in a more healthy cafeteria and I was 00:10:19.91\00:10:24.29 taught by a mom who said you are what you eat. And I feel good 00:10:24.32\00:10:27.59 every time I eat there. 00:10:27.62\00:10:30.33 So it's not only healthy but it's delicious. Now do you guys 00:10:30.36\00:10:33.19 help in the kitchen at all? 00:10:33.23\00:10:35.63 Yeah I do some of the lunch prep and supper cleanup as well. 00:10:35.66\00:10:40.77 You know what I love about we recently had interviewed the 00:10:40.80\00:10:45.64 Ouachita Hill Academy students and you were one of those, not 00:10:45.67\00:10:50.25 in the interview, but what I love about the focus at Ouachita 00:10:50.28\00:10:56.69 Hills, I always say one of the two most important things you 00:10:56.72\00:10:58.62 learn in life first is to have an intimate relationship with 00:10:58.65\00:11:04.56 the Lord Jesus Christ. There's a huge emphasis in the academy 00:11:04.59\00:11:11.80 and the college on spiritual development, on learning how to 00:11:11.83\00:11:15.60 evangelize. We're going to look at some pictures here in a 00:11:15.64\00:11:19.14 minute. But also it's the vocational area, you guys learn 00:11:19.17\00:11:24.31 how to work and the second-most important thing you can develop 00:11:24.35\00:11:27.32 in your life is a good work ethic. You learn how to work 00:11:27.35\00:11:31.22 and you learn to enjoy work. 00:11:31.25\00:11:36.09 This is really very practical. I mean I could have saved $150 00:11:36.12\00:11:40.70 already in guarding and just started just putting together my 00:11:40.73\00:11:42.26 little engines. You know, my little here and there. And then 00:11:42.30\00:11:47.84 Heaven forbid going ahead and trying to retile. You know you 00:11:47.87\00:11:52.61 got to depend on someone else give you directions. Who do I 00:11:52.64\00:11:55.18 need to call. So I mean this is very impressive that this is 00:11:55.21\00:11:59.68 practical stuff that you'll use the rest of your life. I don't 00:11:59.71\00:12:02.95 know if I'd...if there's enough cloth out there to make my own 00:12:02.98\00:12:05.59 pajamas but at least it'd be nice to know 00:12:05.65\00:12:10.49 how to sew my button on. Yes! 00:12:10.53\00:12:12.26 Regarding that I want you to know that the young ladies made 00:12:12.36\00:12:16.87 dresses and blouses and other things. Yeah. 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.24 We just started finishing up some blouses that we've been 00:12:20.27\00:12:22.27 working on for this semester. 00:12:22.30\00:12:26.31 Wonderful skills to know, men and women alike. Now Thaw you 00:12:26.34\00:12:29.91 had worked in the construction program. 00:12:29.94\00:12:33.18 I think you have as well. So I think you've got a picture 00:12:33.21\00:12:37.02 of the construction. Tell us what this is about. 00:12:37.05\00:12:41.56 So this picture is an old church that our church used to attend 00:12:41.59\00:12:44.93 there. So it's not being used 00:12:44.96\00:12:47.53 so they were thinking of turning that building into a 00:12:47.56\00:12:51.60 school close by the Amity Church. So what we did was we 00:12:51.63\00:12:55.47 were framing the inside so we can be able to move it. So they 00:12:55.50\00:12:58.94 took all the electrical work, they took out the carpet, they 00:12:58.97\00:13:01.34 took out the wood. And it was all students. So new students 00:13:01.38\00:13:05.01 were screwing in screws, students were cutting the wood, 00:13:05.05\00:13:07.52 students were measuring. Everything was operated by 00:13:07.55\00:13:10.65 students, yes managed by that guy who guided us. So yes we 00:13:10.69\00:13:15.62 learned a lot of practical skills and Oscar himself too was 00:13:15.66\00:13:18.66 there working on that. 00:13:18.69\00:13:21.30 Yeah we had to take apart a lot of the braces and the roofing. 00:13:21.33\00:13:25.43 So my understanding you actually moved the location of the school 00:13:25.47\00:13:29.64 Yeah. So it wasn't being used at its location so they wanted to 00:13:29.67\00:13:36.58 move it closer to the new Amity Church location for a 00:13:36.61\00:13:40.45 church school essentially. 00:13:40.48\00:13:41.82 How wonderful. 00:13:41.85\00:13:43.52 So basically you took the old one down and reconstructed 00:13:43.55\00:13:46.05 the new one? 00:13:46.09\00:13:47.42 So it was like a double trailer a double wide, so we just kind 00:13:48.06\00:13:54.00 of split it in half and then someone came, lifted it 00:13:54.03\00:13:57.60 and moved it over. 00:13:57.63\00:14:00.10 Amazing skills. 00:14:00.14\00:14:03.27 The experience that these young people were getting. Now they 00:14:03.30\00:14:05.77 didn't just get a little bit of construction. I mean they worked 00:14:05.81\00:14:09.01 their way through different departments with hands-on. And 00:14:09.04\00:14:15.08 over and over again have I spent time in foreign developing 00:14:15.12\00:14:17.72 countries and worked with other missionaries. I often thought 00:14:17.75\00:14:21.62 you know how handicapped a person would be if you didn't 00:14:21.66\00:14:25.93 into that kind of situation with some hands-on skills. And 00:14:25.96\00:14:29.83 the school is big on hands-on skills as well as academic and 00:14:29.86\00:14:34.27 spiritual but it's a big thing. 00:14:34.30\00:14:36.20 Then you certainly would appreciate what you get. 00:14:36.24\00:14:40.34 And it's invaluable. 00:14:40.38\00:14:44.71 Well now I want to kind of jump into a look at some of the 00:14:44.75\00:14:47.78 vocational...Oh, you got a bee... We forgot about 00:14:47.82\00:14:50.12 the bees, tell us about the bee program. 00:14:50.19\00:14:52.72 We actually had bee and honey harvesting and... 00:14:53.52\00:14:57.99 Is that one bee? (Multiple voices) Of course, if you go 00:14:58.03\00:15:03.53 there you'll be swarmed with bees but what's interesting is 00:15:03.57\00:15:08.20 that we have students who work with the bee the...yeah...they 00:15:08.24\00:15:13.21 work in that. It's a new industry we're building and we 00:15:13.24\00:15:16.44 haven't had honey yet but we're hoping that very soon, later 00:15:16.48\00:15:20.38 this year we will have honey for the first time. And so they're 00:15:20.42\00:15:25.02 they're getting that experience how to harvest bees and honey. 00:15:25.05\00:15:28.62 That's beautiful. 00:15:28.66\00:15:30.09 We actually have like four hives so and we're just starting... 00:15:30.13\00:15:35.10 You know what's good about that is because the bee populations 00:15:35.13\00:15:37.90 are being exterminated almost by all of the...around here we're 00:15:37.93\00:15:43.24 losing a lot of bees because of all the insecticides. So any 00:15:43.27\00:15:47.38 time you can continue God's... Bees are important to our... 00:15:47.41\00:15:53.15 That's another arrow that you have in your quiver. We've got 00:15:53.18\00:15:56.28 some guys here at 3ABN who are starting new hives and it's got 00:15:56.32\00:16:00.96 its own language. I mean you just walk up to them and they're 00:16:00.99\00:16:04.59 sitting there talking bee talk you know and everything and it's 00:16:04.63\00:16:07.00 kind of like what in the world. You know. And so anyway it's 00:16:07.03\00:16:15.20 very smart to sit and have your own hives. 00:16:15.24\00:16:19.01 Absolutely. So now let's just kind of jump into the spiritual 00:16:19.04\00:16:22.58 development there because I know ...we've got pictures. We're 00:16:22.61\00:16:27.48 going to run through them rather quickly but you'll see the 00:16:27.52\00:16:29.98 pictures of the students praying together. They will be singing 00:16:30.02\00:16:35.22 at church, playing the piano at church. But you also teach the 00:16:35.26\00:16:40.26 students to actually give the sermon, delivering the sermons. 00:16:40.30\00:16:44.97 It's more than just...the students do a lot of this... 00:16:45.00\00:16:50.27 So have you preached yet Thaw? 00:16:50.31\00:16:53.21 Yes I recently this Sabbath I actually preached at the Amity 00:16:53.24\00:16:55.64 church. We have our class in Biblical Preaching II. 00:16:55.68\00:16:58.78 So what it is we each take each week 00:16:58.81\00:17:01.05 our students in that class. Not only that we do the 00:17:01.08\00:17:04.62 morning devotions we are recording for ourselves so 00:17:04.65\00:17:08.12 they want us to have practical work, practical training in 00:17:08.16\00:17:12.89 learning how to preach rather than just sitting in a classroom 00:17:12.93\00:17:15.20 and showing us examples of how to preach. We're actually 00:17:15.23\00:17:19.13 learning ourselves how can we correct ourselves. And then one 00:17:19.17\00:17:21.04 thing in our classroom is impromptu sermons where out of 00:17:21.07\00:17:26.14 the teachers will give us a scripture and we have two 00:17:26.17\00:17:27.51 minutes to prepare. So you're preparing for a five-minute talk 00:17:27.54\00:17:30.58 but you only get two minutes to prepare. I don't know when 00:17:30.61\00:17:33.85 you have to create something in your mind. You have to think of 00:17:33.88\00:17:36.82 something real quick and then at the end we have to do an appeal. 00:17:36.85\00:17:39.15 And so with that class, we're learning how to preach, we're 00:17:39.19\00:17:42.56 learning how to think. We're learning how to analyze the 00:17:42.59\00:17:47.30 Bible at the same time and also we're doing it in churches and 00:17:47.33\00:17:50.43 we're doing it in videos, we're doing it in class so we get a 00:17:50.47\00:17:54.20 lot of experience rather than just learning how to preach 00:17:54.24\00:17:57.01 we're actually doing the preaching. 00:17:57.04\00:17:58.91 Amen, amen. And then you all have a rather large emphasis on 00:17:58.94\00:18:04.78 canvassing. Oscar, have you done any canvassing? 00:18:04.81\00:18:10.12 (Yeah) For our viewers at home tell us what we mean when we say 00:18:10.15\00:18:13.82 canvassing. 00:18:13.86\00:18:15.26 So canvassing is essentially just going door to door trying 00:18:15.29\00:18:19.49 to leave books on a donation basis. You know, spiritual books 00:18:19.53\00:18:24.57 that share about how we can have a relationship with Jesus. 00:18:24.60\00:18:28.20 Health books that show people how they can cook healthy. 00:18:28.24\00:18:31.77 A lot of people are looking for that nowadays. 00:18:31.84\00:18:34.58 Yeah, basically we... What is canvassing? 00:18:34.61\00:18:39.75 You all are participating in it. 00:18:39.78\00:18:45.15 what is the experience of canvassing, how has that helped 00:18:45.19\00:18:48.86 develop you for evangelizing sharing the gospel, missionary. 00:18:48.89\00:18:56.56 Talk about what it has done for you. 00:18:56.60\00:18:58.80 Well one thing is because we're speaking to random people 00:18:58.83\00:19:01.70 that we don't really know 00:19:01.74\00:19:03.07 and we're learning how to analyze them. We're 00:19:03.10\00:19:06.57 looking. Do they have a cross on their necklace on there. And 00:19:06.61\00:19:08.48 they're turning away. How do you get their attention again. 00:19:08.51\00:19:11.41 You're trying to engage with them so you're not only there 00:19:11.45\00:19:13.21 just to sell books but you're engaging to know that you care 00:19:13.25\00:19:16.28 for them and you want to bring salvation to the house by 00:19:16.32\00:19:18.89 giving them those books. 00:19:18.92\00:19:20.76 Amen. 00:19:20.79\00:19:22.12 For me, canvassing is really close because my mom did 00:19:22.16\00:19:24.79 canvassing back home and it also about the school. There were 00:19:24.83\00:19:29.86 canvassers that came down to a church that my family and I were 00:19:29.90\00:19:31.93 staying at and we got to see them canvassing, you know how 00:19:31.97\00:19:34.80 they came back with their testimonies and then my parents 00:19:34.84\00:19:38.21 were like you know when we get to that age to go off the school 00:19:38.24\00:19:39.71 Ouachita Hills would be the place. And so I thoroughly 00:19:39.74\00:19:43.18 enjoyed canvassing 00:19:43.21\00:19:44.58 because it really teaches you how to trust in God. You're like 00:19:44.61\00:19:48.35 walking for so long and you see like one person you know like 00:19:48.38\00:19:51.55 how do I talk to this person? How do I communicate with them? 00:19:51.59\00:19:53.09 Because like Thaw was saying we want to leave them with books 00:19:53.12\00:19:56.12 that can lead to their salvation and so it has really helped me 00:19:56.16\00:19:59.73 to build my faith and trust in God a whole lot. So... 00:19:59.76\00:20:03.87 I think we've got some pictures of you all canvassing and I 00:20:03.90\00:20:08.40 believe that prayer is a big part of it. There you are with 00:20:08.44\00:20:12.07 your books and then you end up praying with people, don't you? 00:20:12.11\00:20:15.24 So what's been...give me an experience of where you're 00:20:15.28\00:20:19.91 plotting out your canvassing route. It's not just a simple... 00:20:19.95\00:20:24.92 And I have to tell you that's... you can laugh. I need to come 00:20:24.95\00:20:28.12 to Ouachita Hills College. I can stand up in front of 15,000 00:20:28.16\00:20:33.19 people and I have and teach Bible. That doesn't make my 00:20:33.23\00:20:38.00 knees knock. Maybe a little bit, no not really. The idea of going 00:20:38.03\00:20:43.41 door to door is terrifying to me because you have to learn how to 00:20:43.44\00:20:50.58 as you said you're analyzing but you mean that in a way that 00:20:50.61\00:20:55.02 you are trying to learn how to connect with others. It's so 00:20:55.05\00:20:59.72 simple for somebody to have the door just slams in your face. 00:20:59.75\00:21:03.39 It's real training to be instant in season and out of 00:21:03.43\00:21:06.86 season. 00:21:06.90\00:21:08.23 Ah yes. 00:21:08.26\00:21:12.43 For several years I was a Boys' Dean in one of our academies and 00:21:12.47\00:21:14.54 they had a canvassing program. And they would come back like 00:21:14.57\00:21:16.94 these young people did to our campus and tell of their 00:21:16.97\00:21:19.34 experiences. I thought man, I really missed something in life. 00:21:19.37\00:21:23.28 I really missed something. 00:21:23.31\00:21:24.75 Now do any of you canvas and sell books to or deliver books 00:21:24.78\00:21:31.85 for donation, however, you say that. Do any of you do that to 00:21:31.89\00:21:34.59 help pay your tuition. 00:21:34.62\00:21:38.06 Yeah. So this summer actually we two are going into a program 00:21:38.09\00:21:43.83 in Maine which hasn't worked in a very long time. But it's 00:21:43.87\00:21:48.80 essentially a way to get training for the ministry 00:21:48.84\00:21:52.77 whether it's personal, or public as well as you know make 00:21:52.81\00:21:58.15 a little money for school. 00:21:58.18\00:22:00.02 And you get to see people's needs and you all have...tell us 00:22:00.72\00:22:08.32 some of your spiritual activities that you have. 00:22:08.36\00:22:10.53 You've got different days and seasons. 00:22:10.56\00:22:13.19 Yeah, we have quite a bit going on. Apart from morning worship 00:22:13.23\00:22:15.66 which we have, students have worship in the dorm, dorm 00:22:15.70\00:22:20.77 worship. On Wednesday nights we have actually the Wednesday 00:22:20.80\00:22:23.97 night meetings and students actually, participate in some of 00:22:24.01\00:22:27.24 these meetings, the Wednesday night meetings, and morning 00:22:27.28\00:22:30.05 worship. Thaw you have participated in that, you know 00:22:30.08\00:22:33.58 many of the students. And we also have other activities like 00:22:33.62\00:22:38.35 we actually have a medical missionary weekend. That was 00:22:38.39\00:22:40.92 just last weekend. Where actually, it was very spiritual 00:22:40.96\00:22:45.16 highly spiritual. Dr. Jackson from M.E.E.T. Ministries was 00:22:45.19\00:22:49.10 there and he did an amazing presentation. And we also have 00:22:49.13\00:22:54.70 College Days. That was also very spiritual. Well Brother 00:22:54.74\00:23:00.58 Ramon Gibbs, he's actually a past student. He did theology. 00:23:00.61\00:23:05.58 He's a past student of Ouachita Hills College. We were so proud 00:23:05.61\00:23:09.58 of him. He actually spoke about true education and he presented 00:23:09.62\00:23:14.69 it in such a comprehensive manner and a manner that I 00:23:14.72\00:23:18.39 believe inspired just about all of us to get involved in 00:23:18.43\00:23:23.90 ministering to others. In fact, he is at Red River Ministries 00:23:23.93\00:23:27.90 and he told how they got the land. It was given to them. 00:23:27.94\00:23:32.54 The Lord moved in such an amazing way that they wanted 00:23:32.57\00:23:36.21 this land and the people who got it to them, gave it to them, 00:23:36.24\00:23:41.15 felt inspired by the Lord to have them get that land. I 00:23:41.18\00:23:46.92 believe it's over a hundred acres of land with buildings on 00:23:46.96\00:23:49.86 it. It's not just land. It had buildings so they already had 00:23:49.89\00:23:54.06 in place the buildings for a sanitarium, for a restaurant and 00:23:54.10\00:23:58.80 other... 00:23:58.83\00:24:01.77 So how exciting to see people who've graduated and be 00:24:01.80\00:24:06.78 successful. But I want you to just rewind just a minute. You 00:24:06.81\00:24:10.85 used a phrase that I think is really important for us to 00:24:10.88\00:24:15.15 explain and that is "True Education." You know it's one 00:24:15.18\00:24:20.09 thing to go to college and get our degrees, an academic degree, 00:24:20.12\00:24:24.73 but what do you mean by "True Education." Who wants to 00:24:24.76\00:24:29.23 jump in and talk about true education. 00:24:29.26\00:24:31.90 I'm going to start a little bit. True education in the sense of 00:24:31.93\00:24:35.64 being educated in a relationship with Jesus, being educated to 00:24:35.67\00:24:40.28 live a life of godliness. I think that's the real center of 00:24:40.31\00:24:46.11 that phrase "True Education." 00:24:46.15\00:24:48.55 Amen. Amen. 00:24:48.58\00:24:49.92 I'd like to share something because like I said I went to 00:24:49.95\00:24:53.69 public college throughout my whole life from pre-K to two 00:24:53.72\00:24:56.66 years in college. And the only thing we'd been learning about 00:24:56.69\00:25:00.13 is how to get a good life, how to get a nice car, how to get a 00:25:00.16\00:25:04.03 nice house. But that's just the world's education. Where true 00:25:04.07\00:25:09.34 education is you're having a relationship with the Lord and 00:25:09.37\00:25:10.71 not only that but you're growing mentally, physically, 00:25:10.74\00:25:15.34 spiritually, With the world, they're only focusing on the 00:25:15.38\00:25:19.28 mental but when going to Ouachita I've been loving and the thing about true 00:25:19.31\00:25:22.45 education because I never heard about this but when I first 00:25:22.48\00:25:25.92 heard about true education I was like where has this been? Where 00:25:25.95\00:25:28.42 has true education been? Because I...Luke 2:52 I memorized in my 00:25:28.46\00:25:36.80 own language where back then my Mom taught me this verse but 00:25:36.83\00:25:39.40 I never learned the importance of it until I came to Ouachita. 00:25:39.43\00:25:42.37 The verse says Jesus grew in wisdom, he grew in stature and 00:25:42.40\00:25:46.68 he grew in favor of God and man. And so it just shows you this is 00:25:46.71\00:25:50.61 how we should grow too. We should grow mentally, physically 00:25:50.65\00:25:53.48 and spiritually, and also socializing with people around 00:25:53.52\00:25:56.62 us too. 00:25:56.65\00:25:59.32 Amen, amen. 00:25:59.35\00:26:01.29 So how are you assigned? I mean do you go 30 miles away 00:26:01.32\00:26:06.59 from the dorm or school to canvas people or do you wait 00:26:06.63\00:26:13.13 till the summer to do this or you do this year round or...? 00:26:13.17\00:26:16.47 So part of the school's program is actually to go out mid-school 00:26:16.50\00:26:22.54 year, maybe to...it depends, different state, maybe the same 00:26:22.58\00:26:26.85 state, but we typically stay outside of the school like with 00:26:26.88\00:26:31.22 the church or something and basically, you know do our work 00:26:31.25\00:26:35.72 out there. Yeah. 00:26:35.76\00:26:38.49 Okay. So the school does that or do you all make those decisions 00:26:38.53\00:26:44.47 It's typically the school that organizes it but really like the 00:26:44.50\00:26:51.11 last few times it's people that have been in connection with the 00:26:51.14\00:26:54.98 school inviting us to their churches, maybe pastors or 00:26:55.01\00:26:58.51 relatives of other teachers. Stuff like that. 00:26:58.55\00:27:01.55 What caught my attention was Maine, wow. I mean that's 00:27:01.58\00:27:07.42 getting into another land. That's a long way from home. 00:27:07.46\00:27:12.36 Yeah, it is. 00:27:12.39\00:27:13.73 So how did that happen? I mean did the churches there contact 00:27:13.76\00:27:17.63 the school. 00:27:17.67\00:27:20.20 This is more... There are different programs around the 00:27:20.24\00:27:24.97 U.S. and the one in Maine is just starting. But there are 00:27:25.01\00:27:29.44 other ones like in the Gulf states, Florida. We have some in 00:27:29.48\00:27:35.92 West Texas and California and stuff like that. It's in 00:27:35.95\00:27:40.26 different places. It's fantastic 00:27:40.29\00:27:42.02 Okay, so we talked about mental, physical, and spiritual, but you 00:27:42.06\00:27:46.49 mentioned the word fellowship. Now you were in the girl's dorm 00:27:46.53\00:27:50.03 we've got a picture. It's a beautiful dorm. Tell us what 00:27:50.07\00:27:55.70 the experience is like because... 00:27:55.74\00:27:57.97 What I love about Ouachita Hills is it has an intimacy about it 00:27:58.01\00:28:04.15 The capacity is 70 students so there's one on one with your 00:28:04.18\00:28:09.62 teachers, one on one...you get to know everybody there. 00:28:09.65\00:28:14.92 We personally like to hang out with people like on a one-on-one 00:28:14.96\00:28:18.26 basis and so when we are like for example in the cafeteria 00:28:18.29\00:28:21.36 there's all the students, there's the teachers that are 00:28:21.40\00:28:23.43 there. And we get to eat with them and it's like they're 00:28:23.47\00:28:27.27 mentors to us and so when we're in the cafe and we're eating 00:28:27.30\00:28:30.84 we're talking about like Bible things or things that we spoke 00:28:30.87\00:28:33.01 about in class, and you go to the dorm and you have like dorm 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.84 worship. And we got to talk about the day, we got to have 00:28:35.88\00:28:39.35 Bible studies. So you're like surrounded by the spiritual 00:28:39.38\00:28:44.49 aspect and it just really brings everyone together on like a 00:28:44.52\00:28:48.56 spiritual level because you all have the same mindset which I 00:28:48.59\00:28:51.06 really enjoy. 00:28:51.09\00:28:53.63 You know here at 3ABN there's 150 people (indistinct) who do 00:28:53.66\00:29:00.17 the work of 450. But we're family. And that's what you guys 00:29:00.20\00:29:05.77 are. It's got that family-type You know I'm just thinking 00:29:05.81\00:29:11.55 there's mamas and daddies or grandparents who are watching 00:29:11.58\00:29:15.88 and thinking well maybe I need to send my child to academy for 00:29:15.92\00:29:20.22 their senior year. Or maybe they're ready to go off to 00:29:20.26\00:29:22.09 school. Check out Ouachita Hills College because it excels...You 00:29:22.12\00:29:31.73 know how I know how good your college is and how good your 00:29:31.77\00:29:34.44 academy is. The quality of the students and I mean what a 00:29:34.47\00:29:40.91 character development. You have beautiful students. 00:29:40.94\00:29:46.11 Not only that but when you look at Lowell over here, 60 years 00:29:46.15\00:29:52.05 as a missionary, for 40 years, I forget the number. 00:29:52.09\00:29:54.72 Forty-some years in education in different countries... 00:29:54.76\00:29:59.96 What a testimony to actually be out of the country. We all grow 00:30:00.00\00:30:05.87 up hearing about the missionaries, we all grow up 00:30:05.90\00:30:09.10 hearing about Africa, you know, and South America and here we 00:30:09.14\00:30:12.24 got somebody we can actually go and talk to those who have 00:30:12.27\00:30:17.38 "walked the talk" you know. The Lord has blessed you and what, 00:30:17.41\00:30:20.78 so many experiences. 00:30:20.82\00:30:22.15 You know what, one of the biggest blessings I find in 00:30:22.18\00:30:25.22 being on that campus and like I say I've spent most of my life 00:30:25.25\00:30:28.42 on school campuses. There's a Godly atmosphere on that campus. 00:30:28.46\00:30:34.46 You know I had no intention of going there to work. I was asked 00:30:34.50\00:30:40.20 to go and consult. As we're driving away my wife says what 00:30:40.24\00:30:44.47 if the Lord wants us to be there So I came back home and began 00:30:44.51\00:30:48.74 praying and well that's where I'm at. But I'm just so blessed 00:30:48.78\00:30:52.81 just being there. Young people like this whose focus is 00:30:52.85\00:30:59.42 finishing the Lord's work. I wish I could say that every 00:30:59.45\00:31:02.42 young person that I've associated with has that focus. 00:31:02.46\00:31:05.39 But they don't. Too often well it's like you mentioned you know 00:31:05.43\00:31:09.83 going to go out and get a job and live the good life if that's 00:31:09.86\00:31:14.64 what is the definition of good life is. But these young people 00:31:14.67\00:31:16.30 they're focus and the staff focus is on preparing young 00:31:16.34\00:31:21.41 people to go out and finish the Lord's work on this earth 00:31:21.44\00:31:23.95 and go home. 00:31:23.98\00:31:25.31 And even the vocational...We've got a short video I wanted to 00:31:25.35\00:31:28.78 show you on the vocational because even what you're 00:31:28.82\00:31:32.39 teaching...I don't care if you get your...both of you get your 00:31:32.42\00:31:36.29 theology degree if you ever 00:31:36.32\00:31:38.29 do missionary work or just in life having vocational 00:31:38.33\00:31:42.53 training is really important to your overall development and to 00:31:42.56\00:31:48.17 making you a well-balanced person but they've got someone 00:31:48.20\00:31:51.67 and two-year degrees in the vocation. 00:31:51.71\00:31:54.34 Let's run that video right now. 00:31:54.38\00:31:56.61 I think we'll get to see a little more of Lowell. 00:31:56.64\00:31:59.51 ¤ ¤ 00:31:59.55\00:32:04.99 As I have traveled the world I have met at times and worked 00:32:05.02\00:32:09.32 with graduates of OHC and witnessed God working through 00:32:09.36\00:32:13.63 them to further his kingdom. Beginning with the new school 00:32:13.66\00:32:17.63 year in August of 2024 Ouachita Hills College will have an 00:32:17.67\00:32:23.37 additional program of study and for witness. Here before me 00:32:23.41\00:32:26.07 is a recently 00:32:26.11\00:32:27.44 installed classroom lab area where we will offer a one-school 00:32:27.48\00:32:31.51 year-length program in Small Engine Mechanics. This exciting 00:32:31.55\00:32:37.75 and challenging trade is one which can be applied to almost 00:32:37.79\00:32:40.02 any corner of planet Earth either as a business or used as 00:32:40.06\00:32:44.46 an outreach tool in assisting others in their small engine 00:32:44.49\00:32:46.73 mechanic needs and building relationships as one seeks 00:32:46.76\00:32:51.40 opportunity to tell them about the plan of salvation and the 00:32:51.43\00:32:55.07 soon return of our Savior be it working on as you see here 00:32:55.10\00:32:59.54 chippers, pressure washers, chain saws, generators, etc. 00:32:59.57\00:33:03.21 Branching out into recreational equipment such as ATVs, motor 00:33:03.24\00:33:09.25 cycles and watercraft. A small engine course also leaves a 00:33:09.28\00:33:13.96 solid for further training in automotive mechanics so that our 00:33:13.99\00:33:19.83 graduates can take and pass one or more of the 00:33:19.86\00:33:22.06 equipment and engine training counsels mechanics certification 00:33:22.10\00:33:25.63 exams. As you can see they're fairly well-tooled to present 00:33:25.67\00:33:30.01 this course and are presently set up to accept six students 00:33:30.04\00:33:33.31 into this program. If you or someone you might know would 00:33:33.34\00:33:36.18 have an interest, check us out at OHC.ORG. Our phone number is 00:33:36.21\00:33:42.28 870-342-6210 Thank you and may the Lord 00:33:42.32\00:33:50.83 bless you. ¤ ¤ 00:33:50.86\00:33:57.73 So I want to talk to you about ministry opportunities. We've 00:33:57.77\00:34:03.27 talked a little about canvassing We've talked some about how you 00:34:03.30\00:34:08.68 get up to lead devotionals, and/or worship. You all have 00:34:08.71\00:34:16.08 been first-year students, you've just completed your first year. 00:34:16.12\00:34:17.49 How have you grown spiritually? Inara we'll start with you. 00:34:17.52\00:34:23.59 I would say personally because I have grown spiritually in a 00:34:23.63\00:34:28.93 way because we do so much outreach opportunity so you 00:34:28.96\00:34:32.20 really get to see how much people are in need, how much 00:34:32.23\00:34:35.37 they need to know about God. And so as you go there to like 00:34:35.40\00:34:39.77 how we had on Thursday we had an outreach opportunity and we went 00:34:39.81\00:34:43.45 out into the community and we saw...we were able to help 00:34:43.48\00:34:47.02 people with things and leave spiritual books with them. For 00:34:47.05\00:34:51.25 me just to see the lack of the need for God in the communities 00:34:51.29\00:34:55.32 has really helped me to grow spiritually. And you know 00:34:55.36\00:34:58.66 studying my Bible or wanting to fill me of the things that 00:34:58.69\00:35:02.03 I can share with others as well 00:35:02.06\00:35:03.40 and so I would say that's how I would have grown 00:35:03.43\00:35:06.60 spiritually like seeing the need that other people have and we 00:35:06.63\00:35:10.14 have so many opportunities at this school to access those 00:35:10.17\00:35:13.64 resources that others don't have and so just taking advantage 00:35:13.68\00:35:16.91 of those things to be able to share with others. 00:35:16.95\00:35:19.41 (Very well put) Amen. Oscar what about you? 00:35:19.58\00:35:23.32 For me, it started in the academy I actually came into the 00:35:23.35\00:35:29.22 school out of a secular lifestyle. I grew up in a 00:35:29.26\00:35:34.06 church, but I didn't do my devotions, I wouldn't eat 00:35:34.10\00:35:36.43 healthy I basically did whatever I wanted. 00:35:36.46\00:35:40.14 But coming into the academy you know 00:35:40.17\00:35:43.81 they encourage you to do your devotions and I think that's one 00:35:43.87\00:35:47.28 way really that has improved my spiritual life. But in terms of 00:35:47.31\00:35:52.65 ministry there's also a lot of opportunity to encourage you to 00:35:52.68\00:35:57.22 like you know your friends at school. Because we all go 00:35:57.25\00:36:00.16 through discouragements and stuff like that. And you know 00:36:00.19\00:36:04.73 like academic life can get hard and discouraging. But there's 00:36:04.76\00:36:10.67 always an opportunity to pray with your friends and to kind of 00:36:10.70\00:36:14.40 share that Christ-like selflessness. And I think really 00:36:14.44\00:36:18.34 that has helped me. 00:36:18.37\00:36:19.74 So would you say you're less selfish? 00:36:19.77\00:36:24.18 Definitely, definitely. 00:36:24.21\00:36:26.11 Have you learned to work harder? 00:36:26.15\00:36:28.88 Yeah. Yeah. 00:36:28.92\00:36:31.39 You enjoy work... 00:36:31.42\00:36:32.75 I do enjoy work. Um I grew up with my dad as a mechanic and so 00:36:32.79\00:36:37.76 I would go with him sometimes and help him out. I still do 00:36:37.79\00:36:41.06 whenever I go home I go, you know, go help him out. But I 00:36:41.10\00:36:48.24 enjoy working on the farm. We have a few fields there and 00:36:48.27\00:36:52.44 greenhouses as well as in construction and maintenance and 00:36:52.47\00:36:55.18 stuff like that. 00:36:55.21\00:36:56.54 Tell us a little bit more about the greenhouses because I know 00:36:56.58\00:36:58.31 we talked about that with the academy students but we haven't 00:36:58.35\00:37:02.58 mentioned that here. You do have a really lovely farming program 00:37:02.62\00:37:06.45 and you raise your produce. 00:37:06.49\00:37:10.69 Yeah. So we have obviously a plethora of land there and we'll 00:37:10.73\00:37:18.00 grow stuff like corn and stuff like okra, watermelon, honeydew 00:37:18.03\00:37:25.17 and we typically use the greenhouse for some of the 00:37:25.21\00:37:31.78 smaller foods like beets, carrots, cilantro, coriander, 00:37:31.81\00:37:36.89 tomatoes, and all of that stuff. And usually like they let 00:37:36.92\00:37:43.66 us do the planting. So we set the seeds in the little 00:37:43.69\00:37:47.93 containers and then take them out and put them in the soil. 00:37:47.96\00:37:49.93 And that's pretty fun. 00:37:49.96\00:37:52.53 Yeah, see this one. He always raises our tomatoes from 00:37:52.57\00:37:56.71 heirloom seeds and we go through from the little pods out to 00:37:56.74\00:38:02.28 about four or five different pot sizes before they go into 00:38:02.31\00:38:04.31 the raised bed. 00:38:04.35\00:38:05.68 If I could just figure out how to not have $10 tomatoes. 00:38:05.71\00:38:11.35 Now Thaw you have a different perspective that anyone because 00:38:11.39\00:38:18.49 you've been to a secular college and come in here and how has 00:38:18.53\00:38:25.37 your life changed at Ouachita? 00:38:25.40\00:38:28.17 Yes, um coming to Ouachita there's a big difference, really 00:38:28.20\00:38:33.38 different, because what they teach over there and what 00:38:33.41\00:38:35.94 Ouachita teaches. Because coming from a public college, you 00:38:35.98\00:38:38.91 just see people doing whatever they want to do. 00:38:38.95\00:38:42.32 They're just living a life. But coming to Ouachita there's 00:38:42.35\00:38:47.39 actually, staff who care about you, who want you to get closer 00:38:47.42\00:38:48.76 to the Lord and ask how are you doing today? Are you doing 00:38:48.79\00:38:52.06 fine? They're looking at your homework saying oh look it looks 00:38:52.09\00:38:56.67 like your homework's not being turned in on time. But at public 00:38:56.70\00:38:59.27 college they don't care. (Mumbling) But at Ouachita they 00:38:59.30\00:39:04.54 actually are caring, like are you okay? How are you doing? 00:39:04.57\00:39:08.38 Is there any way we can help you The goal especially too with 00:39:08.41\00:39:14.15 Ouachita, when I came to Ouachita I started waking up 00:39:14.18\00:39:16.18 more early too for my morning devotion time. I used to think 00:39:16.22\00:39:21.29 6, 5 in the morning, that's crazy. I'm not going to wake 00:39:21.32\00:39:23.69 up at that time. But just coming to Ouachita seeing people how 00:39:23.73\00:39:28.63 the Lord used them because of when they're in prayer. Prayer's 00:39:28.66\00:39:32.03 so powerful, especially that morning prayer where you just 00:39:32.07\00:39:35.77 pray with the Lord in the morning. Your days seem so 00:39:35.80\00:39:38.64 different than when you don't pray in the morning. Just coming 00:39:38.67\00:39:41.94 to Ouachita like especially myself, I have grown spiritually 00:39:41.98\00:39:45.01 coming to Ouachita. But you know 00:39:45.05\00:39:47.68 it's interesting because you said to Oscar that you 00:39:47.72\00:39:49.65 pretty much did what you wanted to before you showed up. When 00:39:49.68\00:39:55.26 you're in a secular school there's a certain amount of peer 00:39:55.29\00:39:58.26 pressure and you've got people who have no real purpose in 00:39:58.29\00:40:01.66 their life and they're partying and they do...So your value 00:40:01.70\00:40:05.43 system when you come to a place like Ouachita Hills College is 00:40:05.47\00:40:10.97 very different. 00:40:11.01\00:40:12.84 Yes, um from what I've noticed being in a secular school...I 00:40:12.87\00:40:16.61 came out from a secular high school it's just kind of like 00:40:16.64\00:40:19.88 clicking, checking all the boxes It's not really like oh this is 00:40:19.91\00:40:27.39 important. It's more like I'm just going to do this because I 00:40:27.42\00:40:29.49 have to get through it. And that will get me to whatever job I 00:40:29.52\00:40:34.00 want. But when you come into Christian education specifically 00:40:34.03\00:40:40.54 Ouachita Hills College it's more like you're doing it for the 00:40:40.57\00:40:44.17 Lord. Everything that you're being taught prepares you to 00:40:44.21\00:40:49.38 be a more effective soul-winner for that. 00:40:49.41\00:40:54.15 That's beautiful, that's beautiful... 00:40:54.18\00:40:56.58 Let me ask Dr. Wright. You're sitting here listening to these 00:40:56.62\00:41:01.56 students. I think I'd be a proud parent. 00:41:01.59\00:41:06.36 Well I am proud to be the leader of the school, the academic dean 00:41:06.39\00:41:12.27 and hear them share the fact that they have been transformed. 00:41:12.30\00:41:16.54 I mean to the school and the fact that they are being 00:41:16.57\00:41:21.24 developed in all three dimensions: Spiritually mentally 00:41:21.28\00:41:25.11 and physically. So that is really important. It creates 00:41:25.15\00:41:30.62 that you know they're experiencing a balanced 00:41:30.65\00:41:33.96 education. And we have learned that for them to just go to 00:41:33.99\00:41:38.93 school like I have done in several of my schools just 00:41:38.96\00:41:43.16 learning academics. It's not enough. In fact, learning, a 00:41:43.20\00:41:48.60 vocational program actually helps them to do better mentally 00:41:48.64\00:41:52.67 And so... 00:41:52.71\00:41:54.31 Oh absolutely, it's kind of like what Oscar was saying. You can 00:41:54.34\00:42:00.12 go to college and always make straight A's. You can just tick, 00:42:00.15\00:42:04.62 tick, tick, study, cram...It... I've forgotten a whole lot more 00:42:04.65\00:42:09.39 then I learned. But if you know you're doing it for a purpose 00:42:09.42\00:42:14.33 you understand you're learning better but the vocational is 00:42:14.36\00:42:18.90 teaching you the planning, the creating. It's kind of like what 00:42:18.93\00:42:21.80 you were saying when we get off on these missionary trips. 00:42:21.84\00:42:24.67 Right, it makes them useful. We don't have a gym at our school. 00:42:24.71\00:42:30.55 But we have what we call vocational programs that make 00:42:30.58\00:42:34.72 them useful so they go on the farm they work on the farm, they 00:42:34.75\00:42:38.89 work in tiling and all these different areas of labor in 00:42:38.92\00:42:48.06 being useful. When many of them get married I can imagine Oscar 00:42:48.10\00:42:50.97 probably building his own house and tiling his house and fixing 00:42:51.00\00:42:56.64 his car and doing all of that and saving so much money. So 00:42:56.67\00:43:00.51 that's great. 00:43:00.54\00:43:04.01 From a gentleman's standpoint that's impressive. 00:43:04.05\00:43:07.55 Whenever I can sit 00:43:07.62\00:43:09.45 and talk to somebody and we'll be talking about oh yeah my 00:43:09.48\00:43:12.12 lawnmower went down. I guess I'll take it to the...Well why 00:43:12.15\00:43:16.93 not check for a new one you know and then it's down. I mean 00:43:16.96\00:43:21.16 you're just caught in this... And whenever you sit here and 00:43:21.20\00:43:24.43 you can talk to somebody who's ...well you know perhaps if you 00:43:24.47\00:43:28.47 tried this or tried that you know. I did this when I was 00:43:28.50\00:43:32.21 going to college and it's like what? what? Now this is the best 00:43:32.24\00:43:37.15 of both worlds. I mean you're... Number one you have a 00:43:37.18\00:43:42.42 relationship with Jesus. Doesn't get any better than that. We 00:43:42.45\00:43:44.12 started with that. Let's pray, let's start this day off 00:43:44.15\00:43:46.99 right. That's where we start. And then from there, we get to 00:43:47.02\00:43:50.63 do a little labor. Oh my goodness, you know. Labor, 00:43:50.66\00:43:54.66 that's what I'm trying to get away from And so it's kind of 00:43:54.70\00:43:58.80 like well wait a minute here you know you do a little bit of 00:43:58.83\00:44:00.97 labor, you start your day with prayer and then well come on 00:44:01.00\00:44:04.31 over here let's learn a little bit about algebra. We got to 00:44:04.34\00:44:07.71 throw algebra in there to let us know where we came from so now 00:44:07.74\00:44:11.18 all of a sudden we've got a whole person. Not just, well you 00:44:11.21\00:44:17.95 know now I was really good in everything but mechanics and I 00:44:17.99\00:44:22.49 still just... Well, what's the problem? Yeah, it's, its, it 00:44:22.52\00:44:26.90 fascinates me seeing Jesus as an example as well. He was in a 00:44:26.93\00:44:31.47 carpenter shop but he also studied the scriptures and you 00:44:31.50\00:44:37.24 know he would go out to the mountain and pray but he wouldn't just stop there. 00:44:37.27\00:44:39.37 He wouldn't just be like a monk isolated on the mountain but he 00:44:39.41\00:44:43.71 would go out and you know touch the people, heal them, preach... 00:44:43.75\00:44:47.62 (Multiple voices) And you know you said to learn to analyze. 00:44:47.65\00:44:56.62 It's reading people, it's developing discernment about 00:44:56.66\00:45:00.73 people and that's something you have to learn to rely on the 00:45:00.76\00:45:04.50 Lord as well because sometimes we think we know what is going 00:45:04.53\00:45:08.67 on. You were talking about what have they learned you know. My 00:45:08.70\00:45:11.77 wife and I had the privilege of working in a 90 percent non 00:45:11.81\00:45:15.24 Christian country a few years ago. And it was graduates of 00:45:15.28\00:45:21.32 this college who ran a canvassing program in that 00:45:21.35\00:45:23.99 country. And it was...we were very blessed to have them there 00:45:24.02\00:45:28.56 incredibly. 00:45:28.59\00:45:29.92 They knew how to lead. They were leaders. And that's part 00:45:29.96\00:45:33.06 of what they're learning they need. 00:45:33.09\00:45:35.50 And I hope you heard that. I mean you know because that is a 00:45:35.53\00:45:42.34 gift that you have to share with somebody in the future you know 00:45:42.37\00:45:45.97 as well as the present. 00:45:46.01\00:45:47.34 There's something I like, I like the fact that Paul who was so 00:45:47.38\00:45:49.81 well-educated was a tentmaker. Sometimes the highly 00:45:49.84\00:45:54.68 educated individuals do not gravitate towards vocational 00:45:54.72\00:45:58.75 work. But we should. 00:45:58.79\00:46:02.69 Picking up on that Ellen G. White says that Paul is because 00:46:02.72\00:46:06.43 he was a tentmaker was able to reach a class of people that he 00:46:06.46\00:46:10.83 never would have been able to meet before. And that's what the 00:46:10.87\00:46:15.34 trade skills allow you to do, to dial into people that one on 00:46:15.37\00:46:18.97 one relationship so many times that you wouldn't have an 00:46:19.01\00:46:22.24 opportunity to otherwise. 00:46:22.28\00:46:25.05 Have you all been on any missionary trips or do you have 00:46:25.08\00:46:27.98 anything planned for that? 00:46:28.02\00:46:29.48 I have. I've been in the academy every senior year every senior 00:46:29.52\00:46:37.83 class goes on a mission trip. Last year we went to Ukraine. 00:46:37.86\00:46:42.26 Mmmm. Right in the middle of everything. 00:46:42.30\00:46:47.97 We were on the safe side but... 00:46:48.00\00:46:49.34 (Right in the middle of it.) 00:46:49.37\00:46:50.87 We have something planned for this year. We're heading to 00:46:50.91\00:46:54.24 Belize so we're excited as a college to go. (Belize?) Belize. 00:46:54.28\00:46:59.15 We're planning this and the academy will join us as well. 00:46:59.18\00:47:00.75 And Mr. Jenks is right next to me. He's the one 00:47:00.78\00:47:03.08 planning this trip. He's leading it. 00:47:03.15\00:47:05.42 My dear wife is from Belize. Okay so we were just there 00:47:05.45\00:47:09.49 spending a couple of weeks with family 00:47:09.52\00:47:10.93 and checking out what the options are. I haven't 00:47:10.96\00:47:13.80 set down with administration yet. That 'set for 00:47:13.86\00:47:16.70 a meeting for next week. We have about three different options. 00:47:16.73\00:47:19.83 We were hoping to choose one or two of those come this next 00:47:19.87\00:47:24.77 school year and make the trip in there. 00:47:24.81\00:47:26.21 That is wonderful because nothing like a missionary trip. 00:47:26.24\00:47:30.55 So if somebody's a young person if they're watching what would 00:47:30.58\00:47:38.19 you tell them. Why would you recommend people who may not 00:47:38.22\00:47:44.26 have a very strong relationship with the Lord, what would be one 00:47:44.29\00:47:48.96 of the top things that you would say about Ouachita Hills 00:47:49.00\00:47:52.83 College? 00:47:52.87\00:47:55.90 Well one thing is for sure is getting closer to the Lord. 00:47:55.94\00:47:59.01 Because I remember when I was just living the life in the 00:47:59.04\00:48:02.64 world, I did what I wanted to do I ate what I wanted to eat but 00:48:02.68\00:48:06.31 it just seems like there was a void in this heart. It was like 00:48:06.35\00:48:09.58 it was never filled until that moment when I actually came to 00:48:09.62\00:48:12.99 the Lord. This void here was filled. One thing I know for 00:48:13.02\00:48:18.73 sure as I've been reading Ecclesiastes even everything we 00:48:18.76\00:48:21.96 do is so pointless. This thing that's not pointless when we 00:48:22.00\00:48:26.10 bring a soul to Jesus. That's something that we can take to 00:48:26.13\00:48:29.54 heaven with us. We can't take anything else but someone. 00:48:29.57\00:48:32.87 Ecclesiastes Solomon said, God puts eternity in every heart so 00:48:32.91\00:48:41.18 there is that as Pascal said, God shaped hole in your heart 00:48:41.22\00:48:45.52 that nothing's going to satisfy until you invite the Lord to 00:48:45.55\00:48:50.29 come in and be your...not just your Savior but your Lord. 00:48:50.33\00:48:53.93 Inara. Well what I would say the disciplinary...you become so 00:48:53.96\00:48:58.47 disciplined by attending this school. Because everything's 00:48:58.50\00:49:01.04 like on a schedule. There's like, worship at eight. Me 00:49:01.07\00:49:04.54 I have breakfast prep at 5:30 a.m. so you want to be 00:49:04.57\00:49:07.84 there on time, you know have everything out. With your class 00:49:07.88\00:49:12.55 you have to be on time. With canvassing has got to be on 00:49:12.58\00:49:15.65 time. And so if you have any struggle with time like I did, 00:49:15.68\00:49:19.75 sort of I still kind of do. But if you struggle with time and 00:49:19.79\00:49:23.29 disciplining yourself, that's something Ouachita Hills has 00:49:23.32\00:49:28.16 really helped me within becoming more disciplined in 00:49:28.20\00:49:32.63 terms of you know your eating schedule, your sleep schedule, 00:49:32.67\00:49:34.97 being on time. I can't stress enough being on time. 00:49:35.00\00:49:40.11 You know time management is something that a lot of...I 00:49:40.14\00:49:44.28 worked with a genius was quite frustrating because there was no 00:49:44.31\00:49:50.69 concept of time. Projects would go to the very last second. He 00:49:50.72\00:49:56.46 was just...So it's a very important thing. 00:49:56.49\00:49:58.66 There's literally no way you can return home the same. It's like 00:49:58.69\00:50:02.63 it's kind of ingrained in you after being there for a while 00:50:02.66\00:50:04.87 you know. Right. You start being sleepy like at 9:30. At 5 00:50:04.90\00:50:10.31 o'clock you're like up and ready to go because after doing it 00:50:10.34\00:50:13.54 you know for so long. So... 00:50:13.58\00:50:14.91 Oscar, how about you? What would you tell somebody maybe that... 00:50:14.94\00:50:19.68 You know um for me I came to this school trying to leave 00:50:19.71\00:50:27.42 everything. I wanted to give everything worldly up. But the 00:50:27.46\00:50:34.00 one thing that I wanted to do above all else was that I wanted 00:50:34.03\00:50:37.70 to serve the Lord. And it's like why did Jesus come to this 00:50:37.73\00:50:41.87 earth? He came here to serve, to minister and not to be 00:50:41.90\00:50:47.31 ministered unto. So I would recommend if a student wants to 00:50:47.34\00:50:51.61 come to really have that mindset to not be there to receive 00:50:51.65\00:50:58.02 necessarily but to do something for God. You know, to do 00:50:58.05\00:51:04.46 something for the teachers, to do something for their friends 00:51:04.49\00:51:06.63 and classmates. Rather than just okay I'm just going to go over 00:51:06.66\00:51:10.47 there and get this good education and... 00:51:10.50\00:51:12.40 You're talking about character development and that's the only 00:51:12.43\00:51:15.94 thing you can take to heaven with you. 00:51:15.97\00:51:17.57 You know when I hear these young people saying you know 00:51:17.61\00:51:21.24 they're sensing that thrill of touching somebody's life and I 00:51:21.28\00:51:26.88 wish that I had realized that when I was a teenager. Now I got 00:51:26.92\00:51:31.85 my thrill from riding fast motorcycles and driving muscle 00:51:31.89\00:51:35.86 cars and it took me many years before I was able to watch a 00:51:35.89\00:51:40.03 young person who I had a little bit part to play in seeing them 00:51:40.06\00:51:43.03 get baptized. That was the greatest thrill. 00:51:43.06\00:51:46.33 It is. Well you know we want to tell you how you can get in 00:51:46.37\00:51:52.44 touch with Ouachita Hills College. So we're going to have 00:51:52.47\00:51:55.94 an address roll. We'll put their address and their phone number 00:51:55.98\00:51:58.18 up. And I know somebody out there is a saying, that maybe 00:51:58.21\00:52:02.68 this could be right for me or my child or my grandchild. Here's 00:52:02.72\00:52:06.82 how you can get in touch. 00:52:06.86\00:52:09.72 If you would like more information about Ouachita Hills 00:52:09.76\00:52:13.13 College you can write to 46 Madison Way, Amity, AR 71921 00:52:13.16\00:52:20.94 That's 46 Amity Way, Amity, AR 71921 00:52:20.97\00:52:25.54 You can call (870) 432-6210 They're online at ohc.org 00:52:25.57\00:52:39.59 Or you can email AcademicDean@ohc.org 00:52:39.62\00:52:46.96
