Well, we're here to share.
The backdrop of our story is a

nearly 10 year infertility
struggle. Jason and I about four
00:07:45.19\00:07:51.77
years into marriage started
talking about having a child and
00:07:51.80\00:07:54.37
we were so excited to start a
family. Looking back I remember
00:07:54.40\00:07:59.77
even as a teenager, I was
excited about being a mother one
00:07:59.81\00:08:04.28
day. I loved to shop at garage
sales and consignment stores and
00:08:04.31\00:08:10.35
so I would see all the
baby clothes there and even as a
00:08:10.39\00:08:14.32
teenager I would snatch up those
clothes and those bibs and those
00:08:14.36\00:08:18.29
rattles and I would put them in
a hope chest. Hope chests were
00:08:18.33\00:08:22.56
big back then in my day all
in preparation to be a mother.

And so now at 27 four years
married I was beyond ready. I

was so excited. We called family
and friends and told them our
00:08:32.64\00:08:36.78
plan. I went to the bookstore
and bought every book you can on

pregnancy. You know, what
to expect when you're expecting

Baby naming books. Jason and
I started a list of our favorite

boy names and girl names and we
had a room set aside in our home

already for a nursery. We were
just ready. But year after year

went by with no success. And we
went to my family doctor and she

told me some good information
and I tried to implement all

that she was saying. I talked
to other women who were going
00:09:13.65\00:09:17.65
through some infertility issues
and tried to change my diet and
00:09:17.69\00:09:22.02
take supplements and take my
temperature at the right time.

I was doing everything I knew to
do. But month after month went
00:09:25.76\00:09:29.43
by with no success. So
eventually, I was recommended to
00:09:29.46\00:09:36.71
an OB/GYN in my community and
he wanted to do some testing on
00:09:36.74\00:09:41.74
both of us to see what might
be causing some infertility. So

Jason's tests came back good
so he wanted to look closer at
00:09:46.41\00:09:53.05
me. So he recommended
exploratory surgery. So a couple
00:09:53.09\00:09:59.26
days later the doctor's office
called me and told me to come in

because we had the results and
the doctor wanted to talk with
00:10:03.53\00:10:06.47
me. So as I was waiting in the
room and he walked in I could
00:10:06.50\00:10:12.57
see the disappointment on
his face. And he said, Ms.
00:10:12.61\00:10:16.71
Mendenhall this is not the
greatest news. I know but you
00:10:16.75\00:10:20.75
were wanting to hear some better
news but we have found that you
00:10:20.78\00:10:24.02
have polycystic ovarian
syndrome. You have fibroid
00:10:24.05\00:10:29.76
tumors in your uterus. You have
a pretty severe case of
endometriosis and by
00:10:29.79\00:10:34.20
this time I was 31 and so age
was now playing a role as well
00:10:34.23\00:10:38.67
And so he told me then that the
attempts to get pregnant on my
00:10:38.70\00:10:48.94
own were very, very low, and
he said that even with fertility
00:10:48.98\00:10:54.32
medicine it would be an uphill
battle and with no guarantees.
00:10:54.35\00:10:58.22
And the news was absolutely
devastating to me. I remember
00:10:58.25\00:11:06.63
leaving the doctor's office and
tears started flowing and by the
00:11:06.66\00:11:11.33
time I got to my car I
was weeping. As just as I was
00:11:11.37\00:11:16.64
grieving this news I felt like
someone had punched me in the
00:11:16.67\00:11:21.61
stomach and I was just trying
to catch my breath. And so I
00:11:21.64\00:11:27.92
remember going home, driving
home and I'm thinking how am I
00:11:27.95\00:11:32.82
supposed to tell this to my
husband who wanted a child as
00:11:32.85\00:11:37.56
bad as I did. And all the guilt
I felt as a wife because it was
00:11:37.59\00:11:42.26
me, it was all my, all the
problems. His tests came back
00:11:42.30\00:11:45.23
good but I was the one with
all this infertility issue and I
00:11:45.27\00:11:52.67
remember him walking in the door
and he was eager to hear the
00:11:52.71\00:11:55.08
news of this surgery. He walked
in the door and he could see I
00:11:55.11\00:11:59.51
was crying and upset. And I told
him it's not looking real good

Babe. We may never
be able to conceive.

For a little girl who had
a dream of that. (Yes, yes)

That's tough, yeah.

And so he took me in his arms
and I remember this moment so

well because in that moment my
heart was broken, my spirit was

broken and I felt like
even my body was broken. And his

response to me in that moment
could have been life or death to

my spirit. And instead of
blaming me, instead of saying

you know you have all the
medical issues. This is going

to cost us so much money to try
fertility medicines, instead of
00:12:58.41\00:13:01.24
a look of disappointment on his
face he held me in his arms and
00:13:01.28\00:13:05.68
I remember feeling the love, a
1 Corinthians kind of love that
00:13:05.71\00:13:10.89
looked beyond his own hurt and
attended to my own needs. And
00:13:10.92\00:13:16.56
that is a moment that I went
from a place of hopelessness to
00:13:16.59\00:13:20.20
a place of hope in a very short
amount of time because of the
00:13:20.23\00:13:23.10
way that he responded to me. He
looked me in the eye and he said
00:13:23.13\00:13:29.27
reminded me we are not without
hope. We are in this together

God is not taken by surprise at
this fertility diagnosis and so

we will continue to trust Him
and if we're going to be parents

we will be parents in His time
whether through conceiving or

through the wonderful world
of adoption we are going to
00:13:45.32\00:13:49.02
continue to pray and ask God
for His leading. And that's what

we did. As we listened to
the doctor, he started me on
00:13:51.83\00:13:58.33
fertility medicine and about
another year passed and still no
00:13:58.37\00:14:04.91
success and my symptoms
continued to get worse. At this
00:14:04.94\00:14:08.98
time I ended up by the end
of that year in the ER having to
00:14:09.01\00:14:15.98
have a blood transfusion due
to loss of blood. And when the
00:14:16.02\00:14:20.99
doctor saw me he had examined
me shortly after and he said I
00:14:21.02\00:14:27.13
know how much you want to have
a pregnancy. He said but most of
00:14:27.16\00:14:30.20
the time when I see women
in your condition I recommend a
00:14:30.23\00:14:34.57
hysterectomy. And he said I
know how bad though that you're
00:14:34.60\00:14:38.37
wanting to
00:14:38.41\00:14:39.74
have a pregnancy but I've
done all I can do for you so I'm
00:14:39.77\00:14:41.74
going to recommend you to a
fertility specialist and we'll
00:14:41.78\00:14:45.78
just pray that all goes well.
And so at this point, we had
00:14:45.81\00:14:53.39
also around this time looked
into adoption again for the
00:14:53.42\00:14:58.36
second time and at the time
it was just so expensive. It was
00:14:58.39\00:15:02.46
literally cost prohibitive for
us at the time. And so we just
00:15:02.50\00:15:06.84
kept on praying and trusting and
saying God if you want us to be
00:15:06.87\00:15:11.11
parents you know you'll have to
provide the money for adoption
00:15:11.14\00:15:15.04
or you'll have to you know
answer our prayer. And so we
00:15:15.08\00:15:18.58
just called our family and
friends. By this time we were on
00:15:18.61\00:15:25.05
many prayer lists at
many different churches. So we
00:15:25.09\00:15:29.89
continued to bathe every step of
our fertility journey in prayer.

And we were excited about
the possibility of going to the
00:15:33.63\00:15:36.87
fertility specialist but at
the time I didn't even know if I
00:15:36.90\00:15:40.57
would be a candidate, if he
would take me on as a patient.

But when we sat down with him
he looked at my case and he said

you have a pretty bad case. He
said but I've seen worse and so

he said I think we might
can try some different fertility

medicine and see how this might
go. So long story short the end

of that year the fertility
medicine still wasn't working

and I had tried three different
fertility procedures and none of
00:16:06.06\00:16:10.47
them worked.

Now where were your spirits by
this time, you know by now where

were you?

Yes, um we always held onto hope
I have served God all my life

and I knew that He could make a
way when there does not seem to

be any other way. So we always
held onto hope but yes I mean

fertility, the infertility
struggle is so hard physically

emotionally, spiritually. I did
ask God why. I've served God my
00:16:37.23\00:16:43.00
whole life. (We were broken)
We were broken. (We were broken)

Jason was you know serving
his country for 20 years. I was
00:16:48.20\00:16:54.18
serving God. He knew that I
would raise a child for Him and

I didn't understand the
wait. So many of our family and

friends were raising families
of their own. And I didn't
00:17:05.29\00:17:09.02
understand. But you know when
I look back on this I never felt
00:17:09.06\00:17:13.06
any condemnation from asking
those questions. Not only did
00:17:13.09\00:17:17.73
God mind that I was asking
those questions, He gave me the
00:17:17.77\00:17:22.84
strength I needed until there
were answers. And you know one
00:17:22.87\00:17:27.61
of my favorite songs that I have
grown up singing as well, you've
00:17:27.64\00:17:30.45
heard me sing it many times is
His Strength Is Perfect. And so

in the times of weakness His
strength was perfect for me and
00:17:35.62\00:17:39.85
whether that was through His
sweet Holy Spirit speaking to me
00:17:39.89\00:17:43.49
through a verse or through a
song or through a wink and a hug

from my husband when he saw I
was struggling, His strength was
00:17:47.43\00:17:51.20
perfect. And when I look back
on everything that we've gone
00:17:51.23\00:17:54.77
through I would not change
it because sometimes there is
00:17:54.80\00:17:58.27
purpose in the wait. They that
wait upon the Lord shall renew
00:17:58.31\00:18:03.48
their strength, they shall mount
up with wings as eagles. And so

although it was very, very
difficult we never lacked His
00:18:08.45\00:18:14.42
strength and His comfort.

Now where were you Jason at this
point after the two years of
00:18:16.32\00:18:22.46
trying, where were you?
00:18:22.50\00:18:23.83
At that point, I'm still
traveling so much with the
00:18:23.87\00:18:28.07
service. So there were many
times where I felt so inadequate
00:18:28.10\00:18:35.21

I wasn't present and so I look

back at I'm so grateful at the
strength that He provided for

both of us even at times when we
could not be together. So there

were many times while GL was not
alone, she was never alone, but
00:18:51.03\00:18:56.30
sometimes we felt alone and we
weren't physically together and
00:18:56.33\00:19:00.54
that was
difficult as well wasn't it?

And for many going through
infertility you do feel alone

because even your family and
your friends they may not know

how to help, you know.
They don't know how to do it and

that's okay and
it's understandable, but

definitely the strength of the
Lord is what got us through and

the promises in His word. And so
we continued to rely on Him and
00:19:23.49\00:19:28.06
when it was time to go see this
fertility specialist again we
00:19:28.10\00:19:33.74
had gone through three
procedures that once again did
00:19:33.77\00:19:38.77
not work. At this time, and this
is where the story gets good,

at this time we had been
struggling for about nine years.
00:19:42.81\00:19:47.92
I was now 35 and so age was even
more of an issue. So we go to

have one more consultation with
our fertility specialist and he

informed us that the next
logical step because nothing has

been working would be
the IVF procedure in vitro
00:20:05.90\00:20:11.07
fertilization. And I did not
know a lot about it at the time.

I knew that at one point it had
been a controversial subject. So

the first thing I said to him
was we believe in the sanctity
00:20:17.81\00:20:22.15
of life and I need to understand
what you mean when you're
00:20:22.18\00:20:24.85
talking about IVF. And he
assured me, he said well you
00:20:24.89\00:20:28.29
need to know that I also believe
in the sanctity of life and he
00:20:28.32\00:20:32.13
said there is only so much that
we as fertility doctors can do.
00:20:32.16\00:20:36.26
He said we can assist you.
What IVF is for those going
00:20:36.30\00:20:41.67
through situations and having
a diagnosis like you were really
00:20:41.70\00:20:45.34
my body was somewhat of
a hostile environment for
00:20:45.37\00:20:50.58
fertility. That the fertility
process can happen outside of
00:20:50.61\00:20:54.85
my body. And he said we are just
assisting in that and he said
00:20:54.88\00:20:59.42
our medical team will look for,
it's a process of conception
00:20:59.45\00:21:04.96
into a fertilized embryo and an
embryo will be transferred into
00:21:04.99\00:21:11.43
your uterus, to your womb. Um
he said but once there we can't
00:21:11.47\00:21:16.81
make that embryo attach to
procure a pregnancy. And so he
00:21:16.84\00:21:23.24
was very up front that that is
left to a higher power. But he
00:21:23.28\00:21:29.05
said, I do feel like that we
should try this and let's see

how it works. So now we're faced
with an even bigger decision.

We all know how expensive
fertility procedures are

and so, well
