And so today is not going 00:01:29.12\00:01:32.45 to disappoint at all because we have the 1888 Message Study 00:01:32.49\00:01:37.59 Committee in the house. And I'm excited about this because this 00:01:37.63\00:01:41.46 is a topic that I've been studying for a long time. I'm 00:01:41.50\00:01:44.43 certainly not a scholar. In fact I'm expecting to learn some 00:01:44.47\00:01:47.64 stuff today. But just a quick introduction. We're going to 00:01:47.67\00:01:51.41 come back and get a full introduction. We've got Drs. 00:01:51.44\00:01:53.68 Brian Schwartz and Lindy Schwartz with us and 00:01:53.71\00:01:56.34 then we also have Dr. Kelly Kinsley with us. It's a blessing 00:01:56.38\00:02:00.02 to have you guys and 00:02:00.05\00:02:01.42 they're locked and loaded. As you can see that've got their 00:02:01.45\00:02:02.85 Bibles, they've got their notes and you're not going to want to 00:02:02.88\00:02:05.82 change the channel. So before we get into the meat of this 00:02:05.85\00:02:09.76 discussion we're going to be blessed by Ms. Jennifer 00:02:09.79\00:02:12.39 LaMountain. She's going to be bringing us a beautiful song, a 00:02:12.43\00:02:16.33 medley, two songs. They're entitled How Big is God and of 00:02:16.36\00:02:19.20 course the classic How Great Thou Art. 00:02:19.23\00:02:22.87 ¤ ¤ 00:02:22.90\00:02:52.43 ¤ Though men may strive to go beyond the reach of space ¤ 00:02:52.47\00:03:04.71 ¤ To crawl beyond the distant glimmering stars ¤ 00:03:04.75\00:03:15.62 ¤ This world's a room so small within my Master's house ¤ 00:03:15.66\00:03:26.80 ¤ The open sky its but a portion of His yard ¤ 00:03:26.84\00:03:37.98 ¤ The winter's chill may cause a tiny seed to fall ¤ 00:03:38.01\00:03:49.42 ¤ To lie asleep till waked by summer's rain ¤ 00:03:49.46\00:04:00.77 ¤ The heart grown cold will warm and throb with life anew ¤ 00:04:00.80\00:04:12.08 ¤ The Master's touch will bring the glow again ¤ 00:04:12.11\00:04:23.06 ¤ How big is God, how big and wide His vast domain ¤ 00:04:23.09\00:04:35.40 ¤ To try to tell, these lips can only start ¤ 00:04:35.44\00:04:46.08 ¤ He's big enough to rule His mighty universe ¤ 00:04:46.11\00:04:57.29 ¤ Yet small enough to live within my heart ¤ 00:04:57.33\00:05:09.87 ¤ How big is God, How big is God How big is God ¤ 00:05:09.90\00:05:32.33 ¤ ¤ 00:05:32.36\00:05:38.33 ¤ How great Thou art, How great Thou art ¤ 00:05:38.37\00:05:46.27 ¤ Then sings my soul my Savior God to Thee ¤ 00:05:46.31\00:05:59.79 ¤ How great Thou art, How great Thou art ¤ 00:05:59.82\00:06:17.11 ¤ How great my gratefulness How great Thou art ¤ 00:06:17.14\00:06:28.58 ¤ How great Thou art ¤ 00:06:28.62\00:06:47.90 Amen, amen. She's a 00:06:53.41\00:06:56.64 dear soul, a dear friend, so thank you Jennifer for sharing 00:06:56.68\00:06:59.28 that with us. Just a great song to set the mood. We serve a 00:06:59.31\00:07:03.12 great and mighty God and He showed up and did something 00:07:03.15\00:07:07.46 in 1888 and you may be at home right now watching this saying 00:07:07.49\00:07:11.59 You know what I'm going to tune in to this because maybe you've 00:07:11.63\00:07:13.63 had questions about the significance of what happened 00:07:13.66\00:07:16.30 in the church in 1888. What is the significance. We're going to 00:07:16.33\00:07:20.17 answer a lot of your questions during this program. If you have 00:07:20.20\00:07:23.91 any friends, family members or anyone that is just kind of 00:07:23.94\00:07:25.97 lurking around the house, drag them in the room right now, set 00:07:26.01\00:07:28.48 them down because this is going to be a powerful program that 00:07:28.51\00:07:31.48 we all need to learn about. And so that being said I want to 00:07:31.51\00:07:34.08 again introduce you guys and then I'm going to have you to 00:07:34.12\00:07:36.28 tell us a little bit more about yourself. I'm going to start 00:07:36.32\00:07:38.25 with you, Dr. Brian Schwartz Tell us a little bit about 00:07:38.29\00:07:41.19 yourself your background, where you're from. There may be 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.86 someone watching at home that doesn't know who you guys are 00:07:43.89\00:07:46.09 and would like to know. 00:07:46.13\00:07:47.76 Yeah absolutely. Thank you, Ryan. Thank you for the 00:07:47.80\00:07:50.27 opportunity to be back to 3ABN. I am a physician. Both Lindy and 00:07:50.30\00:07:56.00 I are. We live in the Dayton, Ohio area Practice Cardiology at 00:07:56.04\00:07:59.74 the Kettering Medical Center. I grew up in Michigan and went to 00:07:59.77\00:08:03.58 Andrews University and then met Lindy at Loma Linda University 00:08:03.61\00:08:06.72 Medical School. In fact, met Kelly out there as well so we've 00:08:06.75\00:08:09.68 been friends for a very long time. 00:08:09.72\00:08:12.85 Amen, praise the Lord. And you Dr. Lindy. Tell us a little bit 00:08:12.89\00:08:14.82 about yourself. 00:08:14.86\00:08:16.19 Yes and I want to thank you, Ryan for hosting us and for 00:08:16.22\00:08:19.93 being the occasion to come back to 3ABN It really is a blessing. 00:08:19.96\00:08:24.27 So yes so I was born and raised actually in the West Indies. My 00:08:24.30\00:08:26.27 family immigrated to the states a while ago but I was a 00:08:26.30\00:08:31.84 youngster, a young person actually in high school when I 00:08:31.87\00:08:34.04 came to the states. But we grew up Seventh-day Adventist. My dad 00:08:34.08\00:08:39.18 actually worked in the conference office down in 00:08:39.21\00:08:41.28 Trinidad. But when we came to the states, my family lives in 00:08:41.32\00:08:46.12 Washington State by Walla Walla I went to Walla Walla College 00:08:46.15\00:08:50.23 back in those days. Now it's a university. But anyway but again 00:08:50.26\00:08:53.66 we met at Loma Linda University Medical School and been married 00:08:53.70\00:08:58.23 for 33 years and we're very proud of it. 00:08:58.27\00:09:01.04 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord Well it's a blessing to have you 00:09:01.07\00:09:02.94 both here. And of course at the end of this big table we have 00:09:02.97\00:09:06.27 Dr. Kelly Kinsley. Tell us a little bit about yourself 00:09:06.31\00:09:08.51 brother. 00:09:08.54\00:09:09.88 Thank you. I want to thank you also Ryan for having us here and 00:09:09.91\00:09:12.81 I really appreciate it. I come from the north coast of 00:09:12.85\00:09:16.18 California. We call this redwood country. I mean it is the real 00:09:16.22\00:09:19.75 redwoods. So that's where I practice. I'm a physician up 00:09:19.79\00:09:23.79 there. And I didn't grow up in the Adventist church. I grew up 00:09:23.83\00:09:27.13 in a different denomination. We didn't really study the Bible 00:09:27.16\00:09:30.10 much. But what turned me on is my mom was given Bible studies 00:09:30.13\00:09:37.11 by a nurse friend of hers and I would just listen in and my 00:09:37.14\00:09:41.48 interest in the Bible grew. And so I'm thankful. I graduated 00:09:41.51\00:09:48.02 from Lodi Academy and Pacific Union College and Loma Linda 00:09:48.05\00:09:51.22 University. It's just a pleasure to be here and talk about this 00:09:51.25\00:09:54.52 subject as something I love. 00:09:54.56\00:09:55.89 Amen, amen. Well it's a blessing to have each and every one of 00:09:55.92\00:09:58.83 you guys and I know we're going to spend the next few minutes 00:09:58.86\00:10:00.60 together. We're going to be unpacking the significance of 00:10:00.63\00:10:03.67 what happened in the church in 1888. You hear that date float 00:10:03.70\00:10:08.00 around a lot in people's conversations. I know that I 00:10:08.04\00:10:10.87 have preached many sermons where I've included quotes and 00:10:10.91\00:10:14.18 information pertaining to the significance that Righteousness 00:10:14.21\00:10:17.31 by faith message in 1888 but I just want to start by asking you 00:10:17.35\00:10:21.78 guys...You know there was once a time probably in your lives 00:10:21.82\00:10:24.32 when you didn't know about 1888 or the significance of what 00:10:24.35\00:10:29.49 happened in the church and how that message eventually would 00:10:29.52\00:10:32.46 impact you. But what was your Christian experience like or 00:10:32.49\00:10:35.40 your mentality like before adopting or embracing the 1888 00:10:35.43\00:10:39.43 message. 00:10:39.47\00:10:41.37 (Everybody talking at once) Yeah. Who'll start? 00:10:41.40\00:10:43.37 So yeah I'm 3rd and 4th generation Seventh-day 00:10:43.41\00:10:48.91 Adventist. So I grew up going to Adventist schools but I can 00:10:48.94\00:10:54.12 remember even as a young person feeling that at some point I was 00:10:54.15\00:10:58.52 going to do something wrong that wouldn't meet God's standard and 00:10:58.55\00:11:01.76 I just felt inside my heart that try as hard as I could I 00:11:01.79\00:11:07.00 couldn't achieve the level of righteousness that I knew was 00:11:07.03\00:11:09.90 required. I remember going to Academy and thinking all right 00:11:09.93\00:11:13.00 this is the year that I'm going to be perfect. I became a 00:11:13.03\00:11:15.97 Sabbath School teacher and got really involved with reading my 00:11:16.00\00:11:17.94 Bible. That didn't last too long I knew I was just going to fail 00:11:17.97\00:11:21.74 this year. And little by little by the time I went to college 00:11:21.78\00:11:25.48 I kind of stopped going to church. I believe there was a 00:11:25.51\00:11:29.58 God. I believe the Adventist message was true but I knew that 00:11:29.62\00:11:32.32 deep inside my heart I wasn't good enough and I was never 00:11:32.35\00:11:35.92 going to be able to be. And so that was for other people who 00:11:35.96\00:11:40.06 had a lot more willpower and a lot more strength and were just 00:11:40.10\00:11:44.17 a lot more naturally righteous than I was. And so I actually 00:11:44.20\00:11:49.30 left the Adventist church when I got my acceptance to Loma Linda 00:11:49.34\00:11:52.77 to medical school. The one thing I wanted to get. I didn't go to 00:11:52.81\00:11:59.08 church until May of my very first year at Loma Linda when I 00:11:59.11\00:12:01.92 believed that God sent me a personal vision. At 2 o'clock in 00:12:01.95\00:12:05.75 the morning I can still remember it like the day. Sound asleep, 00:12:05.79\00:12:09.69 woke up looking straight up and I could still see Jesus coming 00:12:09.72\00:12:13.53 in the clouds. People around me were saying Praise the Lord, 00:12:13.56\00:12:16.87 Jesus is coming and Hallelujah Jesus is coming. I tried to 00:12:16.90\00:12:20.34 raise my hand, I tried to say Praise the Lord and I couldn't. 00:12:20.37\00:12:22.74 Right then and there I knelt down beside my bed. I said, Lord 00:12:22.77\00:12:26.27 I know I've been running away from you. I want to study your 00:12:26.31\00:12:29.24 Bible, I know you're calling for me one more time but I am not 00:12:29.28\00:12:32.38 going to be a Seventh-day Adventist. I went on a journey 00:12:32.41\00:12:36.58 searching for truth over the next couple of years until I 00:12:36.62\00:12:40.06 discovered this message. 00:12:40.09\00:12:41.79 All right. We'll get back to that when you discovered it. 00:12:41.82\00:12:43.53 So what about you? Before this 1888 message came into your life 00:12:43.56\00:12:48.23 to your understanding what was your experience like? 00:12:48.26\00:12:51.33 So I was a "good" Seventh-day Adventist. I was always going to 00:12:51.37\00:12:56.87 be a Seventh-day Adventist. I didn't have any inkling of 00:12:56.91\00:13:02.24 leaving the church because I knew it was the right church. 00:13:02.28\00:13:04.71 As to what I believed was interesting because I believed 00:13:04.75\00:13:08.48 that the book of John was wonderful. That's all you needed 00:13:08.52\00:13:11.72 the gospel of John which is powerful. I still love the 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.46 gospel of John today. Fantastic material. But there's more to 00:13:13.49\00:13:18.96 the gospel than that. When I met Brian, he asked me a lot of 00:13:18.99\00:13:22.53 questions about good Adventist things that I knew nothing about 00:13:22.56\00:13:27.34 Things like even the cleansing of the sanctuary and the nature 00:13:27.37\00:13:31.04 of Christ and I said well what in the world is all of that? But 00:13:31.07\00:13:33.98 when we actually discovered the message together and when I 00:13:34.01\00:13:37.91 started studying it put everything in context so it made 00:13:37.95\00:13:43.79 sense. And I've been on fire ever since. We've come in 00:13:43.82\00:13:49.32 contact with the message was it 198(6) 7. Changed my spiritual 00:13:49.36\00:13:57.13 experience, my relationship with God completely. And I believe 00:13:57.17\00:14:00.50 the message is so powerful it can transform lives. 00:14:00.54\00:14:04.01 Amen, praise the Lord, praise the Lord. Dr. Kelly... 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.91 Ryan, I started to answer this question but as I said I didn't 00:14:06.94\00:14:09.64 grow up a Seventh-day Adventist but after I was baptized I kind 00:14:09.68\00:14:13.68 of did all the Seventh-day Adventist stuff. I kind of knew 00:14:13.72\00:14:15.98 the basics but there was so much I didn't know and when I went to 00:14:16.02\00:14:20.22 PUC (Pacific Union College) the Lord showed me a couple of 00:14:20.26\00:14:21.59 things. One is He taught me about the sanctuary. I had no 00:14:21.62\00:14:24.49 clue about that. And I picked up this book The Cross and Its 00:14:24.53\00:14:29.76 Shadow. I love that. And I started...I had this desire I need to know the Bible 00:14:29.80\00:14:35.60 for myself. I took a Bible class at PUC and it was a doctrinal 00:14:35.64\00:14:38.64 studies class where we learned a set of doctrines. The next 00:14:38.67\00:14:42.31 quarter I couldn't take it from this amazing teacher again. I 00:14:42.34\00:14:44.55 had to take it from another teacher and there were some 00:14:44.58\00:14:47.58 differences and I realized I needed to study this for myself. 00:14:47.62\00:14:50.72 So I started studying the Bible and the Lord led me to the PUC 00:14:50.75\00:14:54.82 bookstore and I found this little book in there called 00:14:54.86\00:14:56.19 Lessons on Faith. And that book, many people will testify, that 00:14:56.22\00:15:00.30 book was powerful and I just saw just the practicality and the 00:15:00.33\00:15:04.33 power in the gospel was expressed there in words and 00:15:04.37\00:15:07.57 that touched my heart but it wasn't until Loma Linda when I 00:15:07.60\00:15:11.71 was able to put that together with this copy of, oh some 00:15:11.74\00:15:15.34 sermons back in 1895 and I had never read it but then I started 00:15:15.38\00:15:20.38 to learn more and some of the history and the significance and 00:15:20.42\00:15:23.18 that was at Loma Linda when I knew more. 00:15:23.22\00:15:27.12 Wow, Amazing. 00:15:27.16\00:15:28.49 It's interesting, I just want to say, that at Loma Linda is where 00:15:28.52\00:15:31.33 we discovered this message and people like to say things about 00:15:31.36\00:15:34.40 Southern California and Loma Linda but God can triumph over 00:15:34.43\00:15:38.03 everything and that's where I lot of young people actually 00:15:38.07\00:15:41.27 began to study the message. 00:15:41.30\00:15:43.14 Absolutely. Absolutely. Okay so I know some of you at home are 00:15:43.17\00:15:45.44 saying, all right get to it, get to it. What in the world 00:15:45.47\00:15:48.01 happened in 1888? And that's actually what I want to launch 00:15:48.04\00:15:50.51 into because I feel like we're going to get some pieces of how 00:15:50.55\00:15:53.25 this message has impacted you guys on an individual level and 00:15:53.28\00:15:56.35 we're going to give time for you guys to develop that, but let's 00:15:56.38\00:16:00.09 go back to 1888 and we keep calling it the 1888 message but 00:16:00.12\00:16:06.13 really we're talking about the gospel made more clear. Because 00:16:06.16\00:16:11.70 up to that point, God was leading His church for sure but 00:16:11.73\00:16:15.00 there were some elements missing for us to have a better 00:16:15.04\00:16:18.41 understanding of the fullness of what the gospel is about. So 00:16:18.44\00:16:22.14 1888 there's a general conference session. Something 00:16:22.18\00:16:26.31 happens and so let's develop, let's talk about what happened 00:16:26.35\00:16:28.98 in 1888 at the general conference session and what 00:16:29.02\00:16:32.72 really ultimately came about that we know today as the 1888 00:16:32.75\00:16:35.09 message. 00:16:35.12\00:16:36.46 If I may very briefly even back up a little bit before that. 00:16:36.49\00:16:38.99 Obviously, we came through 1844, the great disappointment, when 00:16:39.03\00:16:42.26 we were expecting Jesus to come in the clouds. And then Ellen 00:16:42.30\00:16:46.53 White was talking about how we were growing Laodicean as early 00:16:46.57\00:16:51.44 as the 1860s. And she starts identifying that. Her husband 00:16:51.47\00:16:55.91 joined in on that and then the leaders began to realize you 00:16:55.94\00:16:58.68 know we've lost our first love. And she began saying things like 00:16:58.71\00:17:03.15 we preach the law, the law, the law until we are as dry as the 00:17:03.18\00:17:06.72 hills of Gilboa, and that's desert over in Israel. It's 00:17:06.76\00:17:11.29 very, very dry. And Adventists were in those days actually 00:17:11.33\00:17:16.36 quite adept at arguing about Biblical truth. We could 00:17:16.40\00:17:19.73 establish that the law not one jot will pass until all this... 00:17:19.77\00:17:25.21 That the 10 commandments were still, in effect, the Sabbath 00:17:25.24\00:17:26.98 was still important and they would win arguments, but they... 00:17:27.01\00:17:29.68 I remember taking classes at Andrews and learning about the 00:17:29.71\00:17:34.48 development of SDA theology pre 1888 it seems like it was 00:17:34.52\00:17:37.25 nothing for a minister to go travel just to debate someone 00:17:37.29\00:17:40.56 on theology. 00:17:40.59\00:17:41.92 They weren't winning hearts. And so this was kind of a reset. And 00:17:41.96\00:17:46.26 so the actual 1888 meeting and I'm going to read a quote in a 00:17:46.29\00:17:50.80 little bit that really high lights what that is but Ellen 00:17:50.83\00:17:53.50 White identified that as the point where God was bringing the 00:17:53.54\00:17:58.41 outpouring of the Holy Spirit in such a measure that she was 00:17:58.44\00:18:02.04 equating it with the outpouring of the latter rain. It was to do 00:18:02.08\00:18:05.55 something to capture the hearts of God's people that I believe 00:18:05.58\00:18:08.75 would have culminated in Jesus being able to come back in that 00:18:08.78\00:18:12.85 very generation had it been completely grasped totally. 00:18:12.89\00:18:15.79 Yeah had they adopted the fullness of what the message was 00:18:15.82\00:18:17.49 teaching. Okay. So what happened How did this message come about? 00:18:17.53\00:18:23.00 What type of transition happened in the minds and hearts of men 00:18:23.03\00:18:26.74 that began to listen to the Holy Spirit that brought about this 00:18:26.77\00:18:30.87 1888 message? 00:18:30.91\00:18:33.24 You want to comment on that? (No) The two messengers that 00:18:33.27\00:18:39.11 came with the message Ellen White said that it warmed her 00:18:39.15\00:18:45.52 heart. And in fact, she said that she had been thinking some 00:18:45.55\00:18:48.59 of these things but she hadn't heard it except these two 00:18:48.62\00:18:53.86 messengers. There were a lot of things going on during the 00:18:53.90\00:18:55.80 conference though. She says in her own words that there was 00:18:55.83\00:19:03.04 opposition, resistance to the message that was being preached. 00:19:03.07\00:19:06.17 But the biggest thing that was most important to her, she said 00:19:06.21\00:19:10.58 like Brian said, they'd been preaching the law, the law but 00:19:10.61\00:19:13.78 what this message highlighted was the uplifted Savior and 00:19:13.82\00:19:18.29 and all that happened at the conference related to the 00:19:18.32\00:19:22.12 uplifted Savior. And the capstone quote that we like to 00:19:22.16\00:19:29.26 speak about is the one in Testimonies to Ministers. We can 00:19:29.30\00:19:32.20 bring that up. I have it written down. First of all, I just want 00:19:32.23\00:19:36.71 to mention one thing that she wrote and she said related to 00:19:36.74\00:19:40.21 this message that several had written to her inquiring if the 00:19:40.24\00:19:44.41 message of justification by faith, which was what she heard 00:19:44.45\00:19:47.88 in 1888 was the third angel's message and I answered, It is 00:19:47.92\00:19:52.52 the third angel's message in verity. In other words, she was 00:19:52.55\00:19:55.92 already saying that this is it. So Adventists as they looked at 00:19:55.96\00:19:59.89 the third angel's message came up with the law but she saw 00:19:59.93\00:20:02.80 something else there that was very crucial. 00:20:02.83\00:20:05.13 So this is what she said. She said: The Lord in His great 00:20:05.17\00:20:10.21 mercy sent a most precious message to His people through 00:20:10.24\00:20:13.34 Elders Waggoner and Jones. 00:20:13.38\00:20:14.71 Elders Waggoner and Jones were the two messengers that came 00:20:14.74\00:20:17.31 Now Ellen White could have begun this quote by saying the Lord in 00:20:17.35\00:20:21.92 His mercy, but she said In His great mercy, not just mercy 00:20:21.95\00:20:26.02 which means that there were some condition going on within the 00:20:26.05\00:20:29.72 church that needed a great message and she said it was most 00:20:29.76\00:20:33.76 precious not just precious. It was most precious. 00:20:33.80\00:20:38.30 And this message was to bring more prominently before the 00:20:38.33\00:20:41.77 world the uplifted Savior, the sacrifice for the sins of the 00:20:41.80\00:20:45.41 whole world. It presented Justification through faith in 00:20:45.44\00:20:49.68 the Surety; it invited the people to receive the 00:20:49.71\00:20:53.42 righteousness of Christ, which is made manifest in obedience 00:20:53.45\00:20:55.78 to all the commandments of God. Many had lost sight of Jesus. 00:20:55.82\00:21:00.42 Now it's interesting this is written to the Seventh-day 00:21:00.46\00:21:02.36 Adventist church and she's telling the church, the Seventh- 00:21:02.39\00:21:08.53 day Adventist church in 1888 that we have lost sight of Jesus 00:21:08.56\00:21:10.97 So anyway. Continue on just to read the quote. Next slide... 00:21:11.00\00:21:16.20 They needed to have their eyes directed to His divine person, 00:21:16.24\00:21:20.28 His merits, and His changeless love for the human family. All 00:21:20.31\00:21:25.28 power is given into His hands, that He may dispense rich gifts 00:21:25.31\00:21:29.68 unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own 00:21:29.72\00:21:34.26 righteousness to the helpless human agent. This is the 00:21:34.29\00:21:39.26 message that God commanded to be given to the world. It is the 00:21:39.29\00:21:43.70 third angel's message, which is to be proclaimed with a loud 00:21:43.73\00:21:47.37 voice, (not whisper but a loud voice) and attended with the 00:21:47.40\00:21:50.81 outpouring of His Spirit in a large measure. 00:21:50.84\00:21:53.94 So as we read this I'm not going to go back and unpack a lot of 00:21:53.98\00:22:00.15 what is here, but she says that this message, when received, 00:22:00.18\00:22:05.29 would be met with an outpouring of the Holy Spirit in large 00:22:05.32\00:22:10.39 measure, which the church has been waiting for. That's the 00:22:10.43\00:22:13.36 latter rain that we've been waiting for, praying for, we 00:22:13.40\00:22:16.90 pray for the latter rain. 00:22:16.93\00:22:18.27 And the purpose is to give the message to the whole world. 00:22:18.30\00:22:20.70 The whole world needs to be warned before Jesus comes back. 00:22:20.74\00:22:24.11 I think that's one of the most significant things is that this 00:22:24.14\00:22:27.31 is a message, not just for us. This is a message He intended 00:22:27.34\00:22:30.28 that is supposed to go everywhere, every nation, 00:22:30.31\00:22:33.92 kindred, tongue, and people. 00:22:33.95\00:22:35.28 Of course, that's the gospel, that's the gospel and again not 00:22:35.32\00:22:39.79 trying to criticize or be critical here but we've already 00:22:39.82\00:22:42.72 established the fact that up to this point it seemed like we had 00:22:42.76\00:22:46.56 been on a track of law, law, law law, commandments, commandments 00:22:46.59\00:22:50.43 commandments. We have that down pat but we were missing the 00:22:50.47\00:22:53.97 Giver of the law, the rule giver I guess you could say. But yet 00:22:54.00\00:22:58.24 some of those people, and there maybe even some at home... 00:22:58.27\00:23:02.91 because I have met many people that again are in opposition to 00:23:02.94\00:23:04.28 even this message. I don't need the 1888 message and maybe it's 00:23:04.31\00:23:09.28 people that are very legalistic in mindset who have this idea 00:23:09.32\00:23:13.29 that they are uplifting Christ by talking about the law. And so 00:23:13.32\00:23:17.29 how would you respond to that. Someone who says that by 00:23:17.33\00:23:19.66 focusing on the law, the commandments because it's you 00:23:19.69\00:23:22.36 know again you know sin is the transgression of the law so you 00:23:22.40\00:23:25.67 focus on the law. You are focusing on Jesus because it's 00:23:25.70\00:23:27.04 the law of God, it's the law of Jesus so how would you respond 00:23:27.07\00:23:29.54 to someone who says I don't really need this 1888 message 00:23:29.57\00:23:32.11 As long as I'm focusing on the law I am focusing on Christ. 00:23:32.14\00:23:35.34 Ryan, what I would say for me is the 1888 message points me to 00:23:35.38\00:23:39.38 the power to even be able to keep the law. One of the things 00:23:39.41\00:23:43.08 in this quote it says is inviting the people to receive 00:23:43.12\00:23:45.75 the righteousness of Christ. And the righteousness of Christ, a 00:23:45.79\00:23:48.96 lot of times we think of that as a declaration but here she's 00:23:48.99\00:23:55.36 talking about it in light of a manifestation. It's manifest in 00:23:55.40\00:24:00.34 the hearts of the people and this was to introduce the people 00:24:00.37\00:24:02.64 of God and to remind them of who God is and why He's called us to 00:24:02.67\00:24:08.01 do this. And yes the law is important but now He wants to 00:24:08.04\00:24:10.25 give us the tools to actually do that. 00:24:10.28\00:24:12.15 One thing I would also say is I don't want to use words that 00:24:12.18\00:24:16.82 might not be accessible but sometimes our language is very 00:24:16.85\00:24:22.79 man-centered we call it anthropocentric. I just got a 00:24:22.82\00:24:26.59 big word. This message makes us Christocentric. We're focused on 00:24:26.63\00:24:31.60 Jesus the uplifted Savior. Let me just read a quote I have 00:24:31.63\00:24:35.30 that's not on the slides because I want to go back and look at 00:24:35.34\00:24:38.07 I think we need to look at all the differences of this quote 00:24:38.11\00:24:40.98 But there's a quote that she has in 21 Manuscript release where 00:24:41.01\00:24:46.92 she makes a statement that I find fascinating. And it is: 00:24:46.95\00:24:51.59 Hanging upon the cross Christ was the gospel. It's amazing 00:24:51.62\00:24:58.59 right. 00:24:58.63\00:24:59.96 Christ and Him crucified. 00:25:00.00\00:25:01.33 Yes but she says, she says, hanging upon the cross Christ 00:25:01.36\00:25:05.00 was the gospel. Now she says we have a message. Isn't that great 00:25:05.03\00:25:10.54 I'd like to back up just saying that you'd asked the question if 00:25:10.57\00:25:15.74 we just focus on the law isn't that enough. Are some of us 00:25:15.78\00:25:19.81 legalistic and we hear that certain ways. I think actually 00:25:19.85\00:25:22.75 in our hearts, fallen hearts that we have, we're all 00:25:22.78\00:25:25.95 naturally legalistic. Every single pagan religion out there 00:25:25.99\00:25:29.62 appeals to the fact that there's something that I need to do in 00:25:29.66\00:25:32.39 order to make myself right with God before He can accept me. 00:25:32.43\00:25:37.07 The truth about the 1888 message is that as Romans 5 says it's 00:25:37.10\00:25:42.07 while I was a sinner, as an enemy, while I was running away 00:25:42.10\00:25:46.98 from God, He is the good shepherd who is out seeking His 00:25:47.01\00:25:50.25 lost sheep. And... 00:25:50.28\00:25:52.48 Yes that's what this message is about. 00:25:52.51\00:25:53.85 When I was searching from place to place to place looking for 00:25:53.88\00:25:56.95 something saying I need something more for my heart it 00:25:56.99\00:26:01.76 was when I heard that little message at the second regional 00:26:01.79\00:26:05.16 1888 conference. My friend Don had been up there on Friday 00:26:05.19\00:26:08.06 night and said you've got to come back to this meeting. I 00:26:08.10\00:26:10.43 went up on Sabbath and it was hearing a message on Agape and 00:26:10.47\00:26:15.10 the message of the cross. But hearing that God is pursuing me 00:26:15.14\00:26:19.57 I'm not the one pursuing Him. He pursues and seeks until He 00:26:19.61\00:26:24.15 finds. And realizing that I can run but He's going to pursue me 00:26:24.18\00:26:29.15 He's the hound of heaven out looking for me. It completely 00:26:29.18\00:26:33.19 transformed my life, it completely transformed my 00:26:33.22\00:26:36.02 experience being up and down, up and down going to revivals 00:26:36.06\00:26:38.49 looking for a way to try to get myself right with God instead 00:26:38.53\00:26:43.50 realizing that He is the one reconciling me. He's pursuing me 00:26:43.53\00:26:47.44 And when I realized what Jesus went through on the cross it 00:26:47.47\00:26:50.77 melted my heart and it took a lot of that roller coaster out 00:26:50.81\00:26:56.48 of my experience. 00:26:56.51\00:26:57.85 Praise the Lord, praise the Lord. Did you have something you 00:26:57.88\00:26:59.81 want to add to that? 00:26:59.85\00:27:01.18 Yes, this quote it's so powerful. Let me just finish a 00:27:01.22\00:27:05.92 couple of points and then you can go back and discuss the rest 00:27:05.95\00:27:08.89 of this and Kelly was... But so hanging upon the cross, Christ 00:27:08.92\00:27:13.56 was the gospel. Now we have a message. Behold the Lamb of God 00:27:13.60\00:27:16.36 which takes away the sin of the world. Will not our church 00:27:16.40\00:27:19.90 members keep their eyes fixed on a crucified and risen Savior in 00:27:19.93\00:27:25.81 whom their hopes of eternal life are centered. Now listen to 00:27:25.84\00:27:29.08 this. This is our message, our argument, our doctrine. In other 00:27:29.11\00:27:34.58 words somehow Christ crucified is our message, our argument, 00:27:34.62\00:27:39.32 our doctrine. That's it. We should be able to find as we 00:27:39.35\00:27:42.89 focus on that recognizing that all, we won't be worried that if 00:27:42.92\00:27:49.46 we focus on Christ it'll be cheap and we won't fulfill the 00:27:49.50\00:27:51.60 law. But in this, she goes on to say if we focus on Christ it 00:27:51.63\00:27:58.41 removed any thought of sinning from us. The cross is that 00:27:58.44\00:28:01.18 powerful, as Paul said. 00:28:01.21\00:28:03.98 Absolutely. Great point, great point. Dr. Kelly, you want to 00:28:04.01\00:28:06.15 add anything to that brother? 00:28:06.18\00:28:07.52 I just love that passage that Lindy was referring to. Hanging 00:28:07.55\00:28:11.35 upon the cross, Christ is the gospel. The paragraph before 00:28:11.39\00:28:14.12 that she's recounting Jesus and how He says if it be possible 00:28:14.16\00:28:20.03 remove this cup from me. You recall that in the garden. And 00:28:20.06\00:28:24.30 it said if that had happened what would have happened to the 00:28:24.33\00:28:28.60 plan of salvation? I mean she says the plan of salvation would 00:28:28.64\00:28:34.98 have been frustrated. And then it says, There arose before Him 00:28:35.01\00:28:38.45 the picture of a lost world, of lost Ryan and lost Brian and 00:28:38.48\00:28:43.65 lost Lindy and lost every one of us. He saw that. And yet then He 00:28:43.69\00:28:49.19 said not my will but Thine be done. And that's what we see on 00:28:49.22\00:28:52.26 the cross as we see Christ, we see God willing to sacrifice all 00:28:52.29\00:28:56.87 on behalf of every one of us and each one of us individually. 00:28:56.90\00:29:02.00 Absolutely. 00:29:02.04\00:29:03.37 So stating what happened on the cross revealed to me that God 00:29:03.41\00:29:06.47 love me more than He loves Himself. When Jesus was going to 00:29:06.51\00:29:10.45 The Cross, Desire of Ages, p.753 says He could not see through 00:29:10.48\00:29:14.45 the portals of the tomb. He was weighing this in the garden as 00:29:14.48\00:29:18.02 Kelly mentioned and then He made a decision that He was going to 00:29:18.05\00:29:21.69 save each of us even if it was only one of us at no matter what 00:29:21.72\00:29:27.23 the cost to Himself. That causes your heart to melt. It causes 00:29:27.26\00:29:31.07 you to respond. It's like how can I not respond to a God that 00:29:31.10\00:29:35.87 is pursuing me and loves me that much. And somehow growing up 00:29:35.90\00:29:39.17 in Adventism in the 70s and the 80s I had not heard that. And 00:29:39.21\00:29:45.91 there's so many Adventists today that still have not. 00:29:45.95\00:29:47.28 Yeah, this is something that you know everything you guys 00:29:47.32\00:29:49.18 were saying before I had even known what the 1888 message was 00:29:49.22\00:29:52.15 Christ sent this to me early on before I really knew what it was 00:29:52.19\00:29:55.76 you know. But it was the gospel. When you have a true balanced 00:29:55.79\00:29:59.93 clear understanding of the gospel you're no longer tunnel 00:29:59.96\00:30:03.87 visioned on an aspect of the gospel. You know the law is an 00:30:03.90\00:30:07.37 aspect of the gospel, it's an important part of the gospel but 00:30:07.40\00:30:09.87 the law in and of itself is not the gospel. The gospel itself is 00:30:09.90\00:30:14.01 how Christ fulfilled that law, the work that He has done for 00:30:14.04\00:30:16.58 us. And in accepting that and allowing His righteousness to be 00:30:16.61\00:30:20.25 applied blood I couldn't see that for years. And so I 00:30:20.28\00:30:22.45 remember early on before I even knew what this was you know just 00:30:22.48\00:30:25.72 simply reviewing and coming to understand that conversation 00:30:25.75\00:30:29.86 that Jesus had with Nicodemus in John 3 and which Mrs. White 00:30:29.89\00:30:33.19 says perhaps there's no other passage in all of the Bible 00:30:33.23\00:30:37.00 where the gospel is made more clear that John 3. And so you go 00:30:37.03\00:30:40.17 back there and a lot of people focus on John 3:16, beautiful 00:30:40.20\00:30:43.84 text, I love the text, I love that beautiful truth, but verse 00:30:43.87\00:30:46.57 14 is what does it for me. You know as Moses lifted up the 00:30:46.61\00:30:49.51 serpent in the wilderness so shall also the Son of Man be 00:30:49.54\00:30:52.71 lifted up. Now tie that to John 12 where he says that I, if I be 00:30:52.75\00:30:56.22 lifted up will draw all men unto me. You cannot separate the 00:30:56.25\00:30:59.52 cross from the gospel. But yet a lot of people say well you 00:30:59.55\00:31:02.72 know all the other evangelicals...You know 00:31:02.76\00:31:05.06 I think sometimes we're so focused on us being different 00:31:05.09\00:31:06.83 that the other evangelical world and we certainly need to be 00:31:06.86\00:31:10.90 different in the Biblical appropriateness as the Bible 00:31:10.93\00:31:14.00 brings out but I think we become so focused on trying to be 00:31:14.04\00:31:17.37 different and so opposite different than that evangelicals 00:31:17.41\00:31:20.24 that we try to go as far away from that as possible but yet in 00:31:20.28\00:31:23.71 the process we removed Christ from the equation and that is 00:31:23.75\00:31:26.61 basically, what happened pre 1888 But Jesus sends Jones and 00:31:26.65\00:31:31.15 Waggoner to wake us up to shake us up a bit, hey let's look at 00:31:31.19\00:31:34.42 what that Bible actually says. 00:31:34.46\00:31:35.79 It was a reset. 00:31:35.82\00:31:37.16 Yeah, there you go yeah. 00:31:37.19\00:31:38.53 So I think if we look at the quote that we from Testimonies 00:31:38.56\00:31:42.63 to Ministers and unpack that I think we'll see even the 00:31:42.66\00:31:45.80 uniqueness of the cross in Adventism and specifically in 00:31:45.83\00:31:51.67 Adventism in the end time, what we've been called to do. Because 00:31:51.71\00:31:55.18 some people you know it's the reformation gospel. Well 00:31:55.21\00:31:58.85 actually what they did was that gospel brought that sanctuary 00:31:58.88\00:32:02.65 truth, it gave it a way forward. And it's in this quote. So it's 00:32:02.68\00:32:07.69 important to note that this was a sacrifice for the sins of the 00:32:07.72\00:32:11.53 entire world. We didn't ask for a sacrifice. He gave it to us. 00:32:11.56\00:32:17.53 He's the initiator and that's one of the themes of the 1888 00:32:17.57\00:32:19.17 message is Christ is the initiator of our salvation for 00:32:19.20\00:32:23.81 the whole world. So the next one... 00:32:23.84\00:32:27.08 So Jones and Waggoner put the focus on that Jesus is actually 00:32:27.11\00:32:29.74 the Savior of the world. God has done something for every single 00:32:29.78\00:32:34.08 person before you even know it before you can even respond to 00:32:34.12\00:32:37.92 it. He's the Savior of all men. There's no a reason that any 00:32:37.95\00:32:41.72 single person should be lost because Christ has paid the 00:32:41.76\00:32:45.09 penalty for everyone. And it's the gift that He gives us. The 00:32:45.13\00:32:48.13 gift is Himself. 00:32:48.16\00:32:51.10 Amen, amen, praise the Lord. So this is the (number 2). Let's 00:32:51.13\00:32:53.13 go to the second slide. 00:32:53.17\00:32:56.34 Now so it says that It presented justification through faith in 00:32:56.37\00:33:00.98 the Surety: It invited the people to receive the 00:33:01.01\00:33:03.95 righteousness of Christ. 00:33:03.98\00:33:10.79 I was wanting you to develop that, there may be someone 00:33:10.82\00:33:13.86 watching (multiple voices) about justification through faith. 00:33:13.89\00:33:17.96 What are we talking about there? Those are big words. What is 00:33:17.99\00:33:21.13 justification through faith. 00:33:21.16\00:33:22.50 That's really key. 00:33:22.53\00:33:23.87 Yes, that is key. 00:33:23.90\00:33:25.23 So in the evangelical world and even much of Adventism, we have 00:33:25.27\00:33:28.70 the idea that justification by faith is just boom the books in 00:33:28.74\00:33:32.91 heaven have been set right and now Christ just covers you with 00:33:32.94\00:33:34.71 the robe. But Jones and Waggoner really and what Ellen White was 00:33:34.74\00:33:38.65 saying in this quote is that justification by faith is 00:33:38.68\00:33:41.88 actually a heartfelt response that changes us. We respond by 00:33:41.92\00:33:46.52 faith. We are broken by seeing what Christ has done on the 00:33:46.55\00:33:50.76 cross, so we are now reconciled to Him. There is a heart change 00:33:50.79\00:33:54.90 that goes on by faith and it's the faith of Jesus that was 00:33:54.93\00:34:00.04 demonstrated on the cross that we respond to. Now faith comes 00:34:00.07\00:34:05.41 forward in us. It's a creative power, it's a personal universe 00:34:05.44\00:34:08.84 that God speaks the word, God demonstrates faith and as a 00:34:08.88\00:34:11.91 result faith begins coming up in each of our heart's and it's 00:34:11.95\00:34:16.25 going to keep growing. It's going to go all the way to 00:34:16.28\00:34:17.62 maturity unless we shut it down, unless we stifle it. 00:34:17.65\00:34:20.19 Yeah so I respond in faith by the work that Christ has done 00:34:20.22\00:34:24.29 Yes, Lord, I want your sacrifice to be applied to me, I accept 00:34:24.33\00:34:28.26 that sacrifice, I accept that blood that's been shed for me so 00:34:28.30\00:34:31.67 that I can have eternal life. I'm expressing that faith and 00:34:31.70\00:34:35.74 now Christ pardons me, He justifies me but according to 00:34:35.77\00:34:38.44 what He's done, not what I've done. Right? This is the 00:34:38.47\00:34:41.38 fundamental gospel. 00:34:41.41\00:34:42.74 He's already justified you. 00:34:42.78\00:34:44.11 We're essentially talking about the courtyard. (Yeah) This is 00:34:44.15\00:34:45.48 the courtyard of the sanctuary. You know you have to express 00:34:45.51\00:34:49.05 faith in receiving that sacrifice and obviously the 00:34:49.08\00:34:52.65 laver would represent the cleansing work of what Christ is 00:34:52.69\00:34:54.76 doing in our life and that baptismal experience that we 00:34:54.79\00:34:57.66 have when we're expressing that new-found faith in our life. But 00:34:57.69\00:35:01.13 then we move on obviously to the sanctification aspect. But this 00:35:01.16\00:35:04.33 is talking about the justification through faith in 00:35:04.37\00:35:07.00 the surety and inviting the people to receive the 00:35:07.04\00:35:10.27 righteousness of Christ. That's what a lot of people have missed 00:35:10.31\00:35:12.97 They find and receive the law, I like the law, like the ten 00:35:13.01\00:35:15.58 commandments but they haven't really received the 00:35:15.61\00:35:18.45 righteousness of Christ yet. 00:35:18.48\00:35:19.81 Okay. A couple points. So this idea and Brian was hitting on 00:35:19.85\00:35:23.92 this. Two things I see in this. So the faith begins with Jesus 00:35:23.95\00:35:31.39 His faith is given to us and Waggoner has a quote, we won't 00:35:31.43\00:35:37.37 get into the quote but if you look at this idea about 00:35:37.40\00:35:40.90 justification through faith we're not looking at my weak 00:35:40.94\00:35:45.37 little faith. Jesus Christ had faith. He lived by faith. Ellen 00:35:45.41\00:35:49.44 White said He died in faith. And that faith creates a 00:35:49.48\00:35:55.52 response. It's a responsive faith so it begins first with 00:35:55.55\00:35:59.85 the faith of Jesus but includes our response to His faith. His 00:35:59.89\00:36:03.66 faith is given to us which is a perfect faith. The fact that we 00:36:03.69\00:36:06.36 have to receive means that it was a gift that was given to us 00:36:06.39\00:36:10.27 so that's a _word received. You can't receive what 00:36:10.30\00:36:16.74 you've not been given you receive it. So that's another 00:36:17.57\00:36:20.81 concept that can't _ down on. Yes? 00:36:20.84\00:36:23.71 This quote reminds me that everything we do is a response 00:36:23.75\00:36:27.72 to what God has already done. We love Him because He first 00:36:27.75\00:36:31.89 loved us. It's the goodness of God leads us to repentance. 00:36:31.92\00:36:36.76 Even to experience justification by faith is based on the fact 00:36:36.79\00:36:42.40 that he has already justified us That justification is in Christ 00:36:42.43\00:36:46.37 and if we receive Christ and we appreciate what He did on the 00:36:46.40\00:36:49.80 cross and our heart responds, we then experience justification by 00:36:49.84\00:36:53.14 faith. It's a response to the justification that He's already 00:36:53.17\00:36:55.74 provided the human race. (Yeah) 00:36:55.78\00:36:57.18 Amen, I love that. 00:36:57.21\00:36:58.61 Ryan, I think a passage that brings that out in 2 Corinthians 00:36:58.65\00:37:01.15 chapter 5 verse 14. I love this passage, the whole thing, but 00:37:01.18\00:37:05.99 I'm just going to read the first 14 and 15. It says: For the love 00:37:06.02\00:37:10.16 of Christ compels us...pushes us forward, right...because we 00:37:10.19\00:37:17.27 judge thus that if one died for all then all died and He died 00:37:17.30\00:37:21.60 for all those who live should live no longer for 00:37:21.64\00:37:25.57 themselves but for Him who died for them and rose again. 00:37:25.61\00:37:28.41 I love that, I love that. Beautiful passage. 00:37:28.44\00:37:31.61 The quote also says that when you receive the righteousness 00:37:31.65\00:37:35.05 you become obedient. So we don't see a partition necessarily 00:37:35.08\00:37:41.09 between this justifying and sanctifying process. This 00:37:41.12\00:37:45.03 justification creates in us a sanctifying process a kind of... 00:37:45.06\00:37:51.13 yes, a response. 00:37:51.17\00:37:52.50 That fulfills the law. 00:37:52.53\00:37:53.87 That's Romans 1:5. Romans 1:5 states that we have been 00:37:53.90\00:37:56.71 given grace for obedience. The natural response of when you 00:37:56.74\00:38:00.28 have received the grace of Christ because you put your 00:38:00.31\00:38:02.44 faith in Him to accept what He's done for you. He saves you by 00:38:02.48\00:38:06.18 His grace through faith right but that faith now causes a 00:38:06.21\00:38:10.95 response, it causes a response, which is of course our obedience 00:38:10.99\00:38:16.52 It's the work that He does. He who began a good work is 00:38:16.56\00:38:19.59 faithful to complete it. We cooperate with Him, we respond, 00:38:19.63\00:38:23.57 we receive it but He is the initiator and He is the one that 00:38:23.60\00:38:26.87 will see it through unless we say no I don't want it. 00:38:26.90\00:38:30.54 Work out your faith with fear and trembling for it is God that 00:38:30.57\00:38:34.58 worketh in you to will and to do His good pleasure. 00:38:34.61\00:38:37.75 It's 100 percent Him. That's what I love about this message 00:38:37.78\00:38:40.75 and the gospel entirely is that it's 100 percent focused on what 00:38:40.78\00:38:45.62 Christ has done and is doing through us because of the faith 00:38:45.65\00:38:48.79 we bring. 00:38:48.82\00:38:50.29 Okay, this is awesome. 00:38:50.33\00:38:53.40 So they needed to have their eyes directed to His divine 00:38:53.43\00:38:54.76 person. 00:38:54.80\00:38:56.13 And what I want to say about this message also, the uplifted 00:38:56.16\00:39:00.70 Savior represented both His divine nature and the human 00:39:00.74\00:39:04.37 nature which He assumed. Do I have time to talk about that? 00:39:04.41\00:39:07.68 person, His merits, and His changeless love for the human 00:39:12.01\00:39:15.62 family. We cannot make God hate us. He loves us. 00:39:15.65\00:39:18.55 And then All power is given into His hands, that He may dispense 00:39:18.59\00:39:23.66 rich gifts unto men, imparting the priceless gift of His own 00:39:23.69\00:39:28.63 righteousness to the helpless human agent. 00:39:28.66\00:39:32.00 (Okay) When we see that we are going right back to Romans 00:39:32.03\00:39:35.07 chapter 5 verses 6, 8 and 10. We were without strength, we 00:39:35.10\00:39:38.84 were helpless, we were sinners, we were enemies. Even despite 00:39:38.87\00:39:46.45 all of that Jesus Christ took the initiative to do something 00:39:46.48\00:39:52.59 for the helpless human agent. So how do we know that God has 00:39:52.62\00:39:56.22 done something for everybody? Because we are helpless. We 00:39:56.26\00:40:00.16 can't help ourselves. For that reason God, I believe, in Christ 00:40:00.20\00:40:06.17 has put humanity on vantage ground. We are lost because we 00:40:06.20\00:40:10.57 choose to reject the gift He's given us. 00:40:10.61\00:40:13.01 That's a powerful point. It literally just comes down to a 00:40:13.04\00:40:17.71 rejection of what Christ has already done for us. There's 00:40:17.75\00:40:21.35 nothing that we have to do to add to it because He's already 00:40:21.38\00:40:23.59 completed the work. We just simply in losing out on 00:40:23.62\00:40:25.82 salvation is living a life contrary and rejecting what He 00:40:25.85\00:40:29.19 has already done for us. 00:40:29.22\00:40:30.96 Rejecting the gospel. Rejecting the Good News, rejecting the 00:40:30.99\00:40:33.23 actual gift of Christ Himself to humanity. 00:40:33.26\00:40:35.60 That's a powerful thought, a powerful thought. 00:40:35.63\00:40:38.33 And then the last slide. This is the message because it's such 00:40:38.37\00:40:42.07 good news. It's unbelievably good news. 00:40:42.10\00:40:44.31 This is the message that God commanded...He didn't say can 00:40:44.34\00:40:47.28 you, please. He commanded to be given to the world. It is the 00:40:47.31\00:40:52.41 third angel's message. This message speaks about the 00:40:52.45\00:40:54.18 commandments, first of all, it speaks about the gospel, 00:40:54.22\00:40:55.55 the everlasting gospel. That's first and then it ends up with 00:40:55.58\00:41:01.69 obedience to all the commandments and the faith of 00:41:01.72\00:41:04.99 Jesus. That faith that we receive engenders in us faith 00:41:05.03\00:41:09.43 to respond and receive what He's given us. So the whole 00:41:09.46\00:41:14.67 package... First, second, and third angels' messages wrapped 00:41:14.70\00:41:18.11 up in this quote. 00:41:18.14\00:41:19.47 Of course, absolutely. So that's a powerful point. 00:41:19.51\00:41:20.84 Seventh-day Adventists were really put in this world as 00:41:20.88\00:41:24.68 prophetic messengers, the ones that actually call the world to 00:41:24.71\00:41:28.72 repentance before Jesus comes. To do that they have to proclaim 00:41:28.75\00:41:32.02 the gospel. They have to live it they have to demonstrate it but 00:41:32.05\00:41:34.59 they also have to proclaim it and that's what we're asked to 00:41:34.62\00:41:37.36 do in Revelation 14 at the beginning of the three angels' 00:41:37.39\00:41:39.76 And I saw another angel flying in the midst of heaven having 00:41:39.79\00:41:42.16 the (in unison) everlasting gospel. 00:41:42.20\00:41:43.87 It is a judgment hour message. That quote as it ends puts the 00:41:43.90\00:41:50.11 focus on this is our core work. It's taking those three angels' 00:41:50.14\00:41:54.01 messages and giving it to the world. So we're talking about 00:41:54.04\00:41:58.15 history, 1888 is a long time ago 100 years ago and so it begs the 00:41:58.18\00:42:03.65 question why are we still here? (Right, right) Probably because 00:42:03.69\00:42:07.32 There's some folk not getting it yet. That's what it is. 00:42:07.36\00:42:13.09 We haven't either understood it or we haven't given it to the 00:42:13.13\00:42:14.96 world. 00:42:15.00\00:42:16.33 Some of us at home, some of us we don't get it yet and Jesus is 00:42:16.36\00:42:20.60 waiting on us. Look I want to come but we've got to 00:42:20.64\00:42:25.57 understand the gospel of Christ. The power of the gospel. Yes I 00:42:25.61\00:42:30.65 love that. So I think we've already answered this question 00:42:30.68\00:42:32.85 just in the beautiful explanation that we have done 00:42:32.88\00:42:35.98 given here in regards to this gospel message that was sent 00:42:36.02\00:42:40.26 through Jones and Waggoner to wake us up, to bring that love 00:42:40.29\00:42:43.89 back and help us to understand who Christ is and His work for 00:42:43.93\00:42:46.19 us. But I'm going to ask this question just because I feel 00:42:46.23\00:42:48.26 like it's important. There's still, probably someone watching 00:42:48.30\00:42:50.40 right now that saying you know what I...1888 was so long ago 00:42:50.43\00:42:53.90 but you're calling it the 1888 message. It seems like it's just 00:42:53.94\00:42:59.31 an old message that we just need to let go. Just let it stay with 00:42:59.34\00:43:03.61 1888. Is it still relevant today and why is it still relevant 00:43:03.65\00:43:06.65 today? 00:43:06.68\00:43:08.28 Yeah absolutely. So I am convicted that is the key for 00:43:08.32\00:43:11.62 the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It's not just that oh 00:43:11.65\00:43:14.96 let's get together in a prayer meeting and pray for the Holy 00:43:14.99\00:43:16.99 Spirit. We need to recover the very message that God sent that 00:43:17.03\00:43:22.36 brought with it the latter rain and the outpouring of the Holy 00:43:22.40\00:43:24.17 Spirit. And so we have to go back and look at our history. 00:43:24.20\00:43:28.14 History's been very important. But the other thing that's super 00:43:28.17\00:43:30.51 important to me and has been for the last 30 years plus since 00:43:30.54\00:43:35.08 we've been studying this is it anchors why we are still here. 00:43:35.11\00:43:38.71 As a young person now some of the young people we tell them 00:43:38.75\00:43:43.35 well a thousand years is like a day for God, God's going to come 00:43:43.39\00:43:47.59 in His own timetable. It feels like the second coming is so 00:43:47.62\00:43:50.56 far off I can't even relate to it. The second coming will come 00:43:50.59\00:43:53.83 when a generation catches hold of this message and that's what 00:43:53.86\00:43:57.03 God's waiting for. It could be and it should be in fact it must 00:43:57.07\00:44:00.84 be our generation. 00:44:00.87\00:44:02.20 Man, that's so true. You want to add anything to that Dr Kelly 00:44:02.24\00:44:04.41 If somebody says to you why is this message relevant today? 00:44:04.44\00:44:07.98 It just seems so old, it's 1888 we haven't grasped, maybe 00:44:08.01\00:44:11.91 someone said we have a new gospel, what would be your 00:44:11.95\00:44:14.58 response to that? 00:44:14.62\00:44:15.95 To me the most significant thing is it's a message the Lord sent. 00:44:15.98\00:44:17.52 And if the Lord sent a message it should be important to me 00:44:17.55\00:44:22.49 and the messages the Lord sends they're really important in all 00:44:22.52\00:44:27.30 times for all places. They still apply to us. So yeah there's 00:44:27.33\00:44:30.60 maybe there's ways to say it differently and a way to make it 00:44:30.63\00:44:35.24 more relevant in some ways but the basic principle, the core in 00:44:35.27\00:44:38.74 what God sent to this church is the foundation of the should be 00:44:38.77\00:44:43.75 the foundation and basis of everything we deliver, every 00:44:43.78\00:44:46.88 doctrinal presentation. 00:44:46.92\00:44:48.25 I think God sent the message because He wants to be reunited 00:44:48.28\00:44:51.79 with His people and she talks about this...In Ellen White's 00:44:51.82\00:44:59.76 mind there has been a delay and you know Israel didn't enter 00:44:59.79\00:45:04.70 into the promised land because of unbelief. She identifies the 00:45:04.73\00:45:09.07 same thing with the church that we haven't entered the heavenly 00:45:09.10\00:45:12.91 Canaan because of unbelief. So the Lord sent the message, most 00:45:12.94\00:45:17.55 precious and because of unbelief we're still here. And so it's 00:45:17.58\00:45:22.02 relevant because we're still here. 00:45:22.05\00:45:25.19 We're still here. We still got to preach it. Okay, brother. 00:45:25.22\00:45:29.56 So one of the things that made a difference in my life, my own 00:45:29.59\00:45:32.03 heart as I heard, you know, started reading and studying 00:45:32.06\00:45:35.50 some of these things is that it actually changed my motivation 00:45:35.53\00:45:39.93 for why to do any of the things I do. It has impacted my life 00:45:39.97\00:45:46.07 from early into medical school this has become more meaningful 00:45:46.11\00:45:50.45 and has grown year by year. It impacts the way I teach 00:45:50.48\00:45:53.15 Sabbath School, the way I present in church, the way I 00:45:53.18\00:45:56.58 interact with people there, every way. And it changed my 00:45:56.62\00:46:00.52 motivation to not do it in order so that I can get in. It changed 00:46:00.56\00:46:05.73 my motivation because I'm concerned about Him. I'm 00:46:05.76\00:46:08.16 concerned about you know how He's doing and all that sin 00:46:08.20\00:46:12.80 brings to Him, the pain that it brings to God's heart and if 00:46:12.83\00:46:15.94 there's anything that I can do by His grace working in my life 00:46:15.97\00:46:19.94 to end it and to advance His kingdom that's what I want to do 00:46:19.97\00:46:24.58 I heard a minister years ago say it's a little motto he used and 00:46:24.61\00:46:28.42 it just always stuck with me. It's not about what you do, it's 00:46:28.45\00:46:30.39 who you know and who you know changes what you do. When we put 00:46:30.42\00:46:33.36 the focus on the right place, in this case the right person, we 00:46:33.39\00:46:36.69 put the focus on Christ it's not that they do doesn't matter, 00:46:36.73\00:46:40.80 it's just when you put the focus on the do then you don't know 00:46:40.83\00:46:43.63 the Savior. But when you put the focus on the Savior they do is 00:46:43.67\00:46:47.67 now put in proper perspective. And when you come to know Him 00:46:47.70\00:46:50.41 now He again gives you the power to be able to do right. It's a 00:46:50.44\00:46:55.24 powerful thing to consider. What about...Does somebody want to 00:46:55.28\00:46:58.38 say something about the youth today. I mean again how do you 00:46:58.41\00:47:01.98 reach the youth with this message, right? Because there 00:47:02.02\00:47:04.09 maybe a young person might watch this. Oh, again, 1888 this 00:47:04.12\00:47:08.32 is from the old church and we're young, a new generation. How do 00:47:08.36\00:47:12.29 you reach the youth with such a message? 00:47:12.33\00:47:14.53 (Multiple voices) So here's the thing. Young people are smart. 00:47:14.56\00:47:22.00 And they see inconsistencies. So they can spot hypocrisy a mile 00:47:22.04\00:47:27.34 away. Of course, if we present ideas and present thoughts and 00:47:27.38\00:47:31.98 it's just information and there's a discrepancy in my own 00:47:32.01\00:47:35.38 personal life, our own personal life they'll spot that and that 00:47:35.42\00:47:41.26 is actually a powerful deterrent of keeping people away. But 00:47:41.29\00:47:45.69 really it comes down to really if the same thing that changes 00:47:45.73\00:47:49.43 my heart can change the youth's heart and that is the uplifted 00:47:49.46\00:47:54.84 Savior. We present Christ and Him crucified, what took place 00:47:54.87\00:47:58.54 on the cross, what does that really mean, what did God really 00:47:58.57\00:48:02.64 relinquish and what did He really put at risk. Those are 00:48:02.68\00:48:05.41 huge things and that makes all the difference in the world. 00:48:05.45\00:48:10.02 I love that, I love that. 00:48:10.05\00:48:11.39 Same thing that to go to the world is to go to the youth 00:48:11.42\00:48:13.05 because they're part of the world. 00:48:13.09\00:48:14.42 Give them the gospel, give them the gospel. And I'm talking 00:48:14.46\00:48:17.99 about the real gospel. Not your own version of what you might... 00:48:18.03\00:48:21.80 I talking about Christ-centered gospel. That's what it really 00:48:21.83\00:48:24.00 comes down to. You guys have an upcoming conference. Tell us a 00:48:24.03\00:48:27.37 little bit about that upcoming conference and how people can 00:48:27.40\00:48:29.47 learn more about what we're discussing today. 00:48:29.50\00:48:31.57 Yeah, every year we get together and do a conference typically at 00:48:31.61\00:48:36.11 one of the Adventists Universities and our website 00:48:36.14\00:48:40.28 1888msc.org, 1888msc.org will have the information about 00:48:40.32\00:48:50.89 our annual conferences. We also do seminars in churches. In the 00:48:50.93\00:48:56.90 past we had a full-time evangelist who was unfortunately 00:48:56.93\00:48:59.83 killed in a plane crash. But it's something that we love to 00:48:59.87\00:49:06.37 support is evangelism, revival meetings in churches and the 00:49:06.41\00:49:10.75 annual conference that you can see on the website is an 00:49:10.78\00:49:12.81 excellent way. We also get together and study as a ministry 00:49:12.85\00:49:19.19 One of the things that is so unique is that every year we get 00:49:19.22\00:49:22.39 together for what's called a board retreat and we just study 00:49:22.42\00:49:24.46 the gospel together and it's just wonderful. 00:49:24.49\00:49:27.03 And the dates, do you have the dates? 00:49:27.06\00:49:30.07 The dates, you can look at the website. 00:49:30.10\00:49:31.80 Go to the website. Bring that website up one more time. 00:49:31.83\00:49:35.77 1888msc.org again 1888msc.org Go to the website. You want to 00:49:35.80\00:49:44.55 know all about when this upcoming conference is happening 00:49:44.58\00:49:47.12 and you want to learn more about the gospel. This is what we're 00:49:47.15\00:49:50.22 talking about. I know we often say the 1888 message. Well 00:49:50.25\00:49:53.09 that's what it is because we were missing the gospel and it 00:49:53.12\00:49:56.32 came in the form of the 1888 General Conference session of 00:49:56.36\00:49:59.26 this message that was brought to the attention of the people that 00:49:59.29\00:50:02.33 we're talking about my friends if you've been tuning in or 00:50:02.36\00:50:04.87 maybe you're just now tuning in. It is the fundamental gospel 00:50:04.90\00:50:08.77 of Jesus Christ. The uplifted Savior Jesus. We put the 00:50:08.80\00:50:11.81 spotlight on Him. It's His righteousness not ours. It's His 00:50:11.84\00:50:15.58 faith not ours. That's what righteousness by faith is. We 00:50:15.61\00:50:20.55 obtain the righteousness of Christ by Christ's faith. 00:50:20.58\00:50:22.85 That's what it really, really, truly, truly is. Guys I've had 00:50:22.88\00:50:25.49 such a fun time today. We're not quite finished though because 00:50:25.52\00:50:28.69 perhaps maybe you want to support this effort, you want to 00:50:28.72\00:50:31.49 learn more, you want to get in contact with the 1888 Message 00:50:31.53\00:50:36.77 Study Committee. I had to make sure I showed that down because 00:50:36.80\00:50:38.37 I just want to say 1888 Committee but it's the 1888 00:50:38.40\00:50:42.07 Message Study Committee. Perhaps you have more questions you want 00:50:42.10\00:50:45.17 to support, you want to get in contact with them. Well there's 00:50:45.21\00:50:48.71 many different ways you can do that but we're going to actually 00:50:48.74\00:50:50.75 pull that up right now so you can know how to contact them and 00:50:50.78\00:50:54.88 maybe support the ministry. 00:50:54.92\00:50:56.65 If you would like more information about the 1888 00:50:56.69\00:50:58.59 Message Study Committee you can write to them at 00:50:58.62\00:51:02.32 8784 Valley View Drive, Berrien Springs, MI 49103. You can call 00:51:02.36\00:51:19.94 them (269) 473-1888. You can find them online at 00:51:19.97\00:51:25.78 1888msc.org or email them at info@1888msc.org 00:51:25.81\00:51:35.36
