I had read that my whole life.

about laying down my life.

I suppose I could be a
martyr, but you know, if there's

I'd kind of like
to do that, you know."

I always thought in terms
of laying down their life.

And one day I was
sitting in front of a group of

enthusiastic high school
students that were volunteers

in our
organization from California.
00:06:12.70\00:06:14.87
And it was spring time.
It was March spring break.

And I was sitting there
waiting for these young people

to come in, we were going
to have worship that morning.

And I thought, wow,
these kids right now could be

spring skiing in California,
they could be out on the ocean,

they could be back home
resting and lying around

just enjoying their
time away from school

during spring break.

But they really did lay
down their lives in a way

for those two weeks that
they were going to be down there

sweating it out
in the Amazon jungle

and helping us to
impact the lives of people

that really, really
benefit from that interaction.

whole new meaning to this verse.

go to Peru for some reason.

Well, in March of 2000
my daughter who was going to

Upper Columbia
Academy in Washington state

came home all excited,
and said, "The mission trip

this year is going to Peru.
00:14:46.95\00:14:48.48
They're doing some
meetings in a big colosseum.
00:14:48.52\00:14:51.39
And the school came to
me right away and said,
00:14:51.42\00:14:53.86
'Oh, Risha, you
need to come and sing.'"
00:14:53.89\00:14:56.12
Because she was
a gifted vocalist
00:14:56.16\00:14:58.09
and they wanted her to do music.
00:14:58.13\00:15:00.16
And we were just
talking about how amazing

these mission trips were.

And I was telling her about
some I had gone on in the past.

And she said to me,
"Dad, you should go with us.

They're looking
for other parents."

And we talk about, you know,
I have a little sermon series

where is the miracle?

And a lot of people
think that's the miracle,

when your teenage daughter
asks you to go along on a trip.

amazing experience.

And a long story short, I
just saw poverty and suffering

and hopelessness on a level
I had never seen it before.

And I knew I couldn't
change the whole world,

but I could probably help
somebody in the Peru region

in the jungle area with
the poverty that I saw there.

So I started going back,
and one thing led to another.

I found two little girls
on the streets whose mom died

and they were alone.

They were six and
eight when their mom died.

When I found them
they were eight and ten.

I ultimately
ended up adopting them,

which is a
whole different story.

They're young adults
now with kids of their own

living in the United States.

That was a whole story.

relationships every time I went

just tighter and tighter

until we were there full-time.

I was there full time for ten
years building the organization.

And it was
because of a school trip.

invitation your teenage daughter

So that is a special event,

relationship between father and
daughter to go as missionaries.

So you decided to
accept. You went over there.

The Lord
orchestrated every step.

From what I see,
and have heard thus far,

is a chain link bound

you started the ministry?

went the first time.

But what is Iquitos?
I mean, where is that?

city on earth that has

commercial flight
up into the jungle

for an hour and a
half, and you land in the

middle of the largest
Amazon jungle in the world.

the longest mountain range

just left the longest arid

world, to get to Iquitos,

with no roads leading to it.

So you can fly to it or you
can go by four and a half days

that motivated you?

and I saw needs in Lima itself.

I remember coming back
from an evangelistic campaign,

and even late at night, 10
or 11, people were out there

asking for help.

So you saw something that
impacted you, and you said,

"We've got to do something."

And tell us how that
took place, and why Iquitos.

Well, the abject
poverty just was overwhelming.

And we talk about poverty,
you know, in the United States.

And yes I know there are people
here that suffer and struggle,

but you can't
have less than nothing.

And the poverty there was
just absolutely overwhelming.

I saw so many unattended
children, and ultimately

girls that we adopted

who are my daughters now
and mothers of my grandchildren.

You know, they were on
the street like those kids

middle of the night.

That's actually
where I met them.

I was out
feeding street children

in the middle of the night.

hit home pretty hard.

those dollars go a long way

collecting people...

On these trips back by myself,
I'd go back and find people

with serious medical conditions,
mostly medical and dental.

Nobody fakes a gallbladder
surgery to get your money.

You know, they either
need the help or they don't.

And they have, thousands
of people have no recourse

I started finding people, taking
them to a private hospital,
