Our special 00:08:17.29\00:08:21.16 guests are father and son, father and son, Gary and Rod 00:08:21.20\00:08:27.30 Bartholomew and they're with Water for Life International. 00:08:27.34\00:08:30.94 And before we learn a little bit more about your ministry I want 00:08:30.97\00:08:35.31 the viewers at home to get to know a little bit more about you 00:08:35.34\00:08:38.35 So Brother Gary can you tell us a little bit about yourself and 00:08:38.38\00:08:41.98 where you're from? 00:08:42.02\00:08:43.35 I'm Gery Bartholomew from Spokane, Washington. I was born 00:08:43.39\00:08:47.02 and raised there and it's still home. 00:08:47.06\00:08:50.99 Amen, amen. All right well glad that you could be here with us 00:08:51.03\00:08:54.56 to share more about your ministry. (Thank you) Yes. 00:08:54.60\00:08:57.70 And Brother Rod. How about yourself. Can you tell us a 00:08:57.73\00:08:59.90 little bit about yourself. 00:08:59.93\00:09:01.44 Absolutely. I was born and raised in Spokane, Washington 00:09:01.47\00:09:04.17 as well and grew up in the family business drilling wells 00:09:04.21\00:09:09.78 doing pump systems and water treatment and I currently am the 00:09:09.81\00:09:16.12 water treatment product manager for three companies in the 00:09:16.15\00:09:20.79 northwest. I cover from Washington to Texas doing water 00:09:20.82\00:09:25.03 treatment in that area. 00:09:25.06\00:09:27.93 Great, great. 00:09:27.96\00:09:29.30 Thank you. What if you share with us a little about the 00:09:29.33\00:09:31.57 ministry, Water for Life International and what you do 00:09:31.60\00:09:34.40 for the ministry. 00:09:34.44\00:09:35.77 Water for Life International started 18 years ago coming up 00:09:35.80\00:09:41.04 here very soon. And we had a challenge that we had heard 00:09:41.08\00:09:48.35 about at an orphanage and school We had been down there doing 00:09:48.38\00:09:52.95 some small projects, electrical projects and things and realized 00:09:52.99\00:09:57.53 they were drinking out of the river. And there were getting to 00:09:57.56\00:10:02.06 be some really serious parasite problems and sickness. And we 00:10:02.10\00:10:07.77 thought you know our background we ought to get water for these 00:10:07.80\00:10:12.94 people and that's how it started We were able to accomplish that 00:10:12.97\00:10:19.21 and then of course the Lord says well look at all these villages 00:10:19.25\00:10:22.52 around here in the same condition. They don't have safe 00:10:22.55\00:10:28.79 water. They have only surface water and there's no septic 00:10:28.82\00:10:31.53 system so all the groundwater, surface water is contaminated 00:10:31.56\00:10:38.23 and so our privilege is to go supply safe drinking water for 00:10:38.27\00:10:42.67 these people. The government health ministry tells us where 00:10:42.70\00:10:46.51 we drill mortality drops. (Mmm, man) 00:10:46.54\00:10:51.48 Thank you for being so willing to serve. 00:10:51.51\00:10:55.62 Yeah, it's as much of a blessing to us as it is to those people. 00:10:55.65\00:11:00.06 I'm sure. So what's the process like in preparing a well, 00:11:00.09\00:11:04.86 drilling for the well? What do you have to go through? 00:11:04.89\00:11:08.63 So first of all, like Dad mentioned, we work with the 00:11:08.66\00:11:15.27 Ministry of Health there locally to find the most needs. So these 00:11:15.30\00:11:19.24 villages are usually destitute villages that can't afford to 00:11:19.27\00:11:25.01 have a well drilled for them. If they just one village again 00:11:25.05\00:11:31.65 can't afford to have the well drilled or to maintain it and so 00:11:31.69\00:11:36.22 we work with them to find a village that needs this more 00:11:36.26\00:11:42.10 than the others so to speak. Because it would be nice if we 00:11:42.13\00:11:44.90 could do it for all but we find the most need. And then we go 00:11:44.93\00:11:50.51 ahead and get our equipment on site. Sometimes that takes a 00:11:50.54\00:11:57.41 little bit of clearing and everything to get it so that we 00:11:57.45\00:12:01.42 can get our heavy equipment on site and then drill the well, 00:12:01.45\00:12:05.95 put a pump in it and go from there. 00:12:05.99\00:12:10.39 Okay, okay great. So when you have the well drilled, when it's 00:12:10.43\00:12:17.80 prepped, you have everything set up, can you share about is 00:12:17.83\00:12:24.24 there anything special that you do before they actually use the 00:12:24.27\00:12:29.68 well? 00:12:29.71\00:12:31.05 Absolutely. We actually have a couple of photos of this where 00:12:31.08\00:12:38.39 we actually have a well dedication that we dedicate this 00:12:38.42\00:12:46.46 well, tell them that actually the Lord has provided this water 00:12:46.49\00:12:51.13 for them. And then we go ahead and we cut the ribbon and have a 00:12:51.17\00:12:58.21 big celebration. The mayor will talk usually at that time. A lot 00:12:58.24\00:13:03.85 of different things go into that but it is a very wonderful 00:13:03.88\00:13:08.75 and special celebration to where we have that first water come 00:13:08.78\00:13:14.02 out and what a joy that is. 00:13:14.06\00:13:18.49 Amen, amen. 00:13:18.53\00:13:19.86 That's a time when our Bible workers are present and they 00:13:19.89\00:13:22.93 give a little talk about water from the scripture; maybe the 00:13:22.96\00:13:26.20 river of life or things like that and make a spiritual 00:13:26.23\00:13:30.54 application. And then we hand out Spanish Bibles to those that 00:13:30.57\00:13:34.94 can read Spanish. 00:13:34.98\00:13:36.31 We have a picture of that don't we? 00:13:36.34\00:13:37.81 We do, we do have a picture of them handing our Bibles. I was 00:13:37.85\00:13:42.72 there at one village. We broke open those cases of Bibles and 00:13:42.75\00:13:47.66 people started reaching in over my shoulders and I told Huberto, 00:13:47.69\00:13:51.86 the pump man operator there that ran the truck, I told him, I 00:13:51.89\00:13:57.37 said I might need my hard hat, Huberto. And it's very 00:13:57.40\00:14:02.17 gratifying to see those people on our way out the village, 00:14:02.20\00:14:05.11 they're sitting along there house reading or they're under 00:14:05.14\00:14:09.74 this tree reading. They're grateful for that Bible. They 00:14:09.78\00:14:12.45 have never had a Bible. (Wow) 00:14:12.48\00:14:15.62 So those Bible workers, are they living in Guatemala or are 00:14:15.65\00:14:19.32 volunteers from here. 00:14:19.35\00:14:21.09 No, we have 11 Bible workers that are living in Guatemala and 00:14:21.12\00:14:27.33 so once those Bibles are handed out those Bibles come with 00:14:27.36\00:14:31.80 studies in the back of them. They were provided by a 00:14:31.83\00:14:37.24 partner... Well, Lightbearers. 00:14:37.27\00:14:39.77 Lightbearers! Thank you. Lightbearers. 00:14:39.81\00:14:42.31 A whole container, 20,000 Bibles (20,000 Bibles) 00:14:42.34\00:14:45.98 were delivered to us while we were there last winter. An 00:14:46.01\00:14:48.85 awesome blessing and so we used those that were sent down by 00:14:48.88\00:14:53.92 Lightbearers and start Bible studies and then it goes on and 00:14:53.96\00:14:57.39 on to building churches and things. 00:14:57.43\00:14:59.73 Do you have any stats of how many churches or members that 00:14:59.76\00:15:02.96 have been baptized as a result of your ministry? 00:15:03.00\00:15:05.30 Well I know we've had thousands of baptisms. We do not keep 00:15:05.33\00:15:10.81 track. Those are the Lord's baptisms and we work very 00:15:10.84\00:15:14.11 closely with the Northern Guatemala Mission where we are 00:15:14.14\00:15:20.28 working drilling these wells in the northern third of the 00:15:20.32\00:15:23.35 country. So it's an effort of all of us. We built 14 00:15:23.39\00:15:30.73 structures last year, Water for Life did. That's kind of typical 00:15:30.76\00:15:36.20 each year probably. (Okay) 00:15:36.23\00:15:37.77 We were told by the Northern Guatemala Conference that it is 00:15:37.80\00:15:43.24 one of the fastest growing conferences in Central America. 00:15:43.27\00:15:48.68 You know, so that's exciting to be part of that. But again 00:15:48.71\00:15:55.15 this is all the Lord's doing. Definitely, we want to work with 00:15:55.18\00:16:01.46 Him in what He is doing and this is just one of the ways that we 00:16:01.49\00:16:06.43 can do that. 00:16:06.46\00:16:07.80 Exactly, exactly. 00:16:07.83\00:16:09.16 So tell us what are some unique aspects of how you do your well 00:16:09.20\00:16:12.43 installation and maintenance in comparison to other 00:16:12.47\00:16:16.30 ministries and well services. 00:16:16.34\00:16:17.67 Yeah, so there are several things that we do but one of 00:16:17.71\00:16:22.91 them I'd really like to focus on is we make this sustainable. 00:16:22.94\00:16:28.18 I have been a part of other water projects around the world 00:16:28.22\00:16:35.86 and it hasn't been sustainable. It's wonderful to go in and get 00:16:35.89\00:16:44.67 this big flash, this big wonderful thing of giving a 00:16:44.70\00:16:47.74 village water but we have to make it sustainable because if 00:16:47.77\00:16:53.38 we don't, if the pump quits or something goes wrong these 00:16:53.41\00:16:59.31 people go back to the mud puddles that they were drinking 00:16:59.35\00:17:03.25 out of literally. You would not let your dog or animals drink 00:17:03.28\00:17:07.92 out of some of the puddles that they are getting their water out 00:17:07.96\00:17:11.89 of. And so we have to make it sustainable. We have the crews 00:17:11.93\00:17:17.40 there that repair these pumps, keep them mainenanced on a 00:17:17.43\00:17:24.87 regular basis and keep them working long-term so that this 00:17:24.91\00:17:30.28 is a sustainable thing that can keep going on and on. We don't 00:17:30.31\00:17:35.25 want to just come in and get the initial well and pump and all of 00:17:35.28\00:17:39.95 that and then leave. Most of our pumps are hand pumps and 00:17:39.99\00:17:44.99 that way it's simpler but it still takes maintenance and we 00:17:45.03\00:17:50.90 have to keep that going and headed in the right direction so 00:17:50.93\00:17:56.77 that's really one of the very unique things that I think we 00:17:56.81\00:18:00.38 provide that a lot of other ministries tend to overlook and 00:18:00.41\00:18:07.58 we just don't want to do that because once they get clean 00:18:07.62\00:18:13.52 water if they go back to the nasty water it's even worse 00:18:13.56\00:18:18.36 than if we hadn't have given it to them in the very first place. 00:18:18.39\00:18:22.23 And so it's got to be an ongoing thing. (Wow) 00:18:22.26\00:18:25.60 Amen. You know you mentioned the hand pumps. I think we have a 00:18:25.63\00:18:29.34 video. You can show that now. Because in my mind I was 00:18:29.37\00:18:33.74 thinking that the hand pump was going to be something like this. 00:18:33.78\00:18:36.85 And we do have some that are like this. But the ones that we 00:18:36.88\00:18:41.62 found now that go like this and we'll be able to see in the 00:18:41.65\00:18:45.32 video in just a minute here, that really has been a game 00:18:45.35\00:18:51.29 changer for us. That is a pump that is by far the best hand 00:18:51.33\00:18:58.17 pump in the world today. Look at them cranking that. And actually 00:18:58.20\00:19:04.81 pumping water by cranking that. The old-style hand pumps, and we 00:19:04.84\00:19:11.85 have a lot of those down there but they sometimes...if we're 00:19:11.88\00:19:18.75 pumping water 12 to 14 hours a day which is common in these 00:19:18.79\00:19:24.83 villages, literally 12 to 14 hours a day. We have to 00:19:24.86\00:19:29.36 understand that each one of these pumps serves on average 00:19:29.40\00:19:33.13 250 people. You know here in the U.S. each home has its own well 00:19:33.17\00:19:39.64 or maybe multiple wells. But down there whole villages use 00:19:39.67\00:19:45.15 this one hand pump or this one well and so 250 people using it 00:19:45.18\00:19:52.19 12 to 14 hours a day it can get some pretty extreme wear. So 00:19:52.22\00:19:57.53 there's times when we have to maintenance those hand pumps 00:19:57.56\00:20:03.16 that go like this three and four times a year to keep them going. 00:20:03.20\00:20:06.63 Where the hand crank style hand pump, which has definitely been 00:20:06.67\00:20:13.51 an improvement and a better pump We can go sometimes three to 00:20:13.54\00:20:17.48 five years without maintenance. (Wow!) And that is a huge, huge 00:20:17.51\00:20:23.49 difference. They are much more expensive but in the cost of 00:20:23.52\00:20:27.66 maintenance that it saves us it's actually over time per 00:20:27.69\00:20:32.73 gallon pumped a lot cheaper. 00:20:32.76\00:20:34.30 It gives us some other options too. The old reciprocating hand 00:20:34.33\00:20:39.13 pump goes up and down, aah give 100 feet deep that's about all 00:20:39.17\00:20:42.80 you're going to get. The life pump which is the one you crank 00:20:42.84\00:20:47.08 400 feet. So it opens up new options and we have drilled some 00:20:47.11\00:20:52.45 600-foot holes and so it's really given us some good 00:20:52.48\00:20:57.42 options. We also install electric pumps and solar pumps 00:20:57.45\00:21:01.59 but these hand pumps are the mainstay. 00:21:01.62\00:21:04.59 Amen. So tell us...I can imagine that you're probably very 00:21:04.63\00:21:10.47 excited when you go in here and set up these wells. What's the 00:21:10.50\00:21:18.67 most gratifying aspect of Water for Life? 00:21:18.71\00:21:22.34 To me the most gratifying is that we're reaching those remote 00:21:22.38\00:21:27.22 villages with the gospel. (Amen, amen) Ah drilling is a platform 00:21:27.25\00:21:32.15 to share the gospel. Once we have drilled in a village, ah, 00:21:32.19\00:21:36.49 we have a tight just a tight time with those people. 00:21:36.52\00:21:43.10 Jesus's method. 00:21:43.13\00:21:44.47 Yeah, they understand that we're the ones that brought them water 00:21:44.50\00:21:47.24 so they come running when our Bible workers come. Then we are 00:21:47.27\00:21:51.81 able to have Bible studies. That's the most gratifying thing 00:21:51.84\00:21:55.48 Those people are destitute and they're so happy to find there's 00:21:55.51\00:22:01.22 a better place coming. (Amen) 00:22:01.25\00:22:02.62 The second thing I would mention in regard to that would be this 00:22:02.65\00:22:08.96 is actually saving lives. So we will go in and put a well in a 00:22:08.99\00:22:16.97 village and then come back a few years later and they will say, 00:22:17.00\00:22:22.90 you know, the year before you put this well in we had three 00:22:22.94\00:22:27.78 infants die due to waterborne illness. After you put the well 00:22:27.81\00:22:31.78 there have been zero infants die due to waterborne illness. So 00:22:31.81\00:22:36.05 you can't put a number on this. It is an absolute life-saving 00:22:36.08\00:22:42.89 thing and like Dad mentioned once we save their physical life 00:22:42.92\00:22:48.53 here on this earth, the Lord can work on their heart and save 00:22:48.56\00:22:52.87 them for eternity. (Amen) So it's just an ongoing wonderful 00:22:52.90\00:22:58.97 thing. And if we give them clean water that changes their 00:22:59.01\00:23:06.38 life forever. You don't have to guess the villages that we go 00:23:06.41\00:23:11.25 into the ones that have clean water, because you don't see the 00:23:11.29\00:23:15.82 distended bellies of the kids because of the amoeba or 00:23:15.86\00:23:18.93 whatever. And they are active. They're more vibrant. They can 00:23:18.96\00:23:23.80 actually, live instead of just existing. If we're sick and 00:23:23.83\00:23:31.44 cast down we're just existing and trying to slog through the 00:23:31.47\00:23:35.88 day. But if we're vibrant and have that energy it changes the 00:23:35.91\00:23:41.68 whole entire outlook of life and your entire life until either 00:23:41.72\00:23:50.06 you die or the Lord comes. (Right, right) and so it's a 00:23:50.09\00:23:55.70 huge thing that giving people clean water changes things 00:23:55.73\00:24:00.44 forever. (Amen, amen) 00:24:00.47\00:24:02.20 It does. Thank you so much for sharing that with us. 00:24:02.24\00:24:03.84 It makes me want 00:24:03.87\00:24:05.21 to get involved. (Amen, amen) So with the recent pandemic, did 00:24:05.24\00:24:08.88 that affect your ministry significantly? 00:24:08.91\00:24:11.41 Oh yes, the pandemic did affect us. Let me tell you how the Lord 00:24:11.45\00:24:15.52 turned that. We had people down there, supervisor-type people 00:24:15.55\00:24:19.62 because we weren't drilling with a national crew yet. It was 00:24:19.65\00:24:23.83 simply volunteers going down, drilling wells and then they'd 00:24:23.86\00:24:27.36 come home and we'd put the well drills away for the rest of the 00:24:27.40\00:24:30.93 year. So we were training hoping to get a national crew up that 00:24:30.97\00:24:35.70 would be able to work all year long. The pandemic kept some of 00:24:35.74\00:24:40.81 our people there several weeks longer than they wanted to be 00:24:40.84\00:24:45.91 there. And they're semi-retired. They said we're okay with that 00:24:45.95\00:24:50.85 We'll go home when the Lord allows. But what it allowed was 00:24:50.89\00:24:54.82 we were able to finish the final training of our crew and then 00:24:54.86\00:25:02.06 that whole year they drilled on their own and we drilled by 00:25:02.10\00:25:06.57 Whatsapp. I didn't think I'd ever drill a well by whatsapp. 00:25:06.60\00:25:10.71 They come into a problem, they send a message you know up to us 00:25:10.74\00:25:14.78 and we could advise them. So that was the first year we were 00:25:14.81\00:25:17.38 able to drill with nationals, no Americans present. And now this 00:25:17.41\00:25:25.19 is the second year. We've almost completed two years now with 00:25:25.22\00:25:28.36 national crews. And another blessing that came out of that 00:25:28.39\00:25:31.39 they're training others and so that's the future of Water for 00:25:31.43\00:25:36.50 Life. It's come up and it all started with COVID. (Wow) 00:25:36.53\00:25:40.14 It's been a blessing in some ways. 00:25:40.17\00:25:42.74 Look at God. Look at how God's been working. You know that's 00:25:42.77\00:25:47.28 a miracle in itself right there. And I'm sure that they've got 00:25:47.31\00:25:51.15 more miracles that they can share. You know I love hearing 00:25:51.18\00:25:54.62 miracles. Do you have any more that you can share with us? 00:25:54.65\00:25:57.52 Well, we've got a lot of them. Just the day before yesterday 00:25:57.55\00:26:01.56 we loaded a 40-foot container that goes to Guatemala and that 00:26:01.59\00:26:05.19 was out of my shop. I'm retired now so that shop is used to 00:26:05.23\00:26:10.10 stage equipment and supplies that go to Guatemala and in the 00:26:10.13\00:26:14.10 disarray that shipping is in now it's just terrible. So we had 00:26:14.14\00:26:20.74 three different dates. They kept changing the date that you'll 00:26:20.78\00:26:25.28 load the container and it finally came this week and that 00:26:25.31\00:26:28.65 is on the way. (Amen) And we've seen other miracles. We've seen 00:26:28.68\00:26:32.05 definite miracles, huge things that we knew were impossible 00:26:32.09\00:26:35.76 just, for one thing, beginning Water for Life and getting 00:26:35.79\00:26:39.16 equipment to Guatemala. How do you ship it there? Things like 00:26:39.19\00:26:43.13 this. And what it does for us is give us confidence in the Lord 00:26:43.16\00:26:47.37 because when those "impossible" things actually come about then 00:26:47.40\00:26:53.81 we know who did it. The Lord did it. (Amen) Rod probably has... 00:26:53.84\00:26:57.95 You know, the Lord has done so many miracles in this ministry. 00:26:57.98\00:27:02.55 But one that just comes to my mind right now is that...and I 00:27:02.58\00:27:07.92 know that we've shared this many times before but it just really 00:27:07.96\00:27:12.53 brings home what the Lord does for us. I was going to some 00:27:12.56\00:27:20.04 conferences on the other side of Washington over in the Olympia 00:27:20.07\00:27:23.84 area and I got a call from my uncle. He was in Guatemala. He 00:27:23.87\00:27:27.71 said I can't keep this drill rig running. I need another magneto. 00:27:27.74\00:27:32.11 And I was like okay and he said oh by the way...this was 00:27:32.15\00:27:41.29 Thursday and Sunday there was somebody that was leaving from 00:27:41.32\00:27:46.06 Spokane and he's like is there any way you can get a magneto 00:27:46.09\00:27:48.80 in their luggage so that they can take it to Guatemala with 00:27:48.83\00:27:52.83 them on Sunday. Well this is Thursday and we've got Sunday 00:27:52.87\00:27:58.34 coming really soon. So I started doing some calls. I called a few 00:27:58.37\00:28:04.71 different vendors and I said okay I need a magneto for this 00:28:04.75\00:28:10.62 drill rig and a couple of them were like well what's a magneto? 00:28:10.65\00:28:14.19 I knew that wasn't going to go very well. And so a lot of 00:28:14.22\00:28:21.33 people probably don't know what a magneto is but it creates the 00:28:21.36\00:28:22.70 spark to make an engine run. Okay. And this was an old style 00:28:22.73\00:28:27.34 engine and so that's what we needed because without spark 00:28:27.37\00:28:31.77 you're not going to have an engine running. It's just that 00:28:31.81\00:28:35.38 simple. So then I was just driving along and praying and I 00:28:35.41\00:28:39.35 said Lord what am I going to do here? And He says call Brett 00:28:39.38\00:28:42.88 McCarty. And so I called Brett McCarty and I said Brett, I said 00:28:42.92\00:28:49.96 because I knew that he had the same style drill rig that we 00:28:49.99\00:28:53.90 have down in Guatemala. It's a percussion style and we actually 00:28:53.93\00:28:57.00 have a video of that drill rig running. We've since changed 00:28:57.03\00:29:03.37 it over to diesel engines so it no longer has the magneto on it. 00:29:03.41\00:29:08.91 It's a diesel engine on it now instead of a gas but...I called 00:29:08.94\00:29:13.98 Brett and I said Brett, Lynn's down there. He needs a magneto 00:29:14.02\00:29:17.59 to keep this going. Is there any way that you can help me out? 00:29:17.62\00:29:21.39 And Brett's like well I'm on the way home from a job and just 00:29:21.42\00:29:27.56 five miles ago I passed a guy 00:29:27.60\00:29:28.93 who rebuilds magnetos. Let me turn around and go back. This is 00:29:30.20\00:29:36.54 when I called him, by the way. He had just passed this. Let me 00:29:36.57\00:29:39.47 go back and talk to him and see what we can do to find a magneto 00:29:39.51\00:29:42.38 He gets back and he calls me from this magneto shop. Well 00:29:42.41\00:29:50.09 this guy, it's actually out in the middle of north Idaho and 00:29:50.12\00:29:53.96 people would send him magnetos. He would rebuild them and send 00:29:53.99\00:29:58.26 them back to them. He didn't stock any magnetos at all. But 00:29:58.29\00:30:02.43 he said okay what is the model number, serial number all of 00:30:02.46\00:30:07.94 that of the magneto that you need. I told him and he called 00:30:07.97\00:30:11.47 me a few minutes later when he got back and he confirmed this 00:30:11.51\00:30:15.58 is the part number, this is the serial number, all of that of 00:30:15.61\00:30:20.88 the magneto that you have and this one is what you need and 00:30:20.92\00:30:26.96 he's like I have one in my hand (what?) And he told me he said 00:30:26.99\00:30:30.39 three years ago, three years ago somebody brought this 00:30:30.43\00:30:36.23 magneto to this guy had him rebuild it and never came and 00:30:36.26\00:30:41.64 picked it up. (Wow) This was the exact magneto that we needed 00:30:41.67\00:30:46.37 for that drill rig in Guatemala. Look the Lord took care of this 00:30:46.41\00:30:51.38 problem three years before we knew we were even going to have 00:30:51.41\00:30:55.82 the problem. And so then Brett said, What do you want me to do 00:30:55.85\00:31:00.12 with it now. Well I wasn't home yet but my wife met Brett at the 00:31:00.16\00:31:04.89 Washington/Idaho border, picked up that magneto and it was on 00:31:04.93\00:31:09.86 it's way to Guatemala the next Sunday. (Amen) 00:31:09.90\00:31:13.37 Praise the Lord. 00:31:13.40\00:31:14.74 And so you know this is the kind of thing that the Lord loves to 00:31:14.77\00:31:18.81 do. He loves to take care of His people and He wants them to be 00:31:18.84\00:31:25.91 happy and to have clean water. 00:31:25.95\00:31:27.28 Amen. You know that's a wonderful miracle story. I know 00:31:27.32\00:31:33.36 you guys have more. Can you share with us maybe just one 00:31:33.39\00:31:36.26 more? There was one I saw that you mentioned about sacrificing 00:31:36.29\00:31:40.00 a pig. (Oh) 00:31:40.03\00:31:41.56 Yeah I want to hear about that one. 00:31:41.60\00:31:43.67 You want to hear about sacrificing a pig. 00:31:43.70\00:31:45.23 What's that about? 00:31:45.27\00:31:47.64 The villages we work in like I mentioned are pretty remote and 00:31:47.67\00:31:51.57 there may be a lot of spiritualism in those villages. 00:31:51.61\00:31:55.18 The village just previous to this one Alacatillo had prayer 00:31:55.21\00:32:01.75 where they wanted the well drilled and we had drilled there 00:32:01.78\00:32:06.45 had a successful well, nice water. They were happy. That's 00:32:06.49\00:32:12.49 where we were handing out the Bibles and they were reaching in 00:32:12.53\00:32:15.23 over me. I thought I was going to need a hard hat to protect 00:32:15.26\00:32:18.40 myself. The next village further back in the jungle 00:32:18.43\00:32:23.81 Samorach. Samorach told us well we sacrificed a pig here and 00:32:23.84\00:32:30.78 it's right in front of a church. We sacrificed a pig here and 00:32:30.81\00:32:35.02 this is where we want to drill. We drilled there. We set up with 00:32:35.05\00:32:39.32 a rotary drill. That's different than the little percussion drill 00:32:39.35\00:32:43.89 you just saw, you know, up and down. It's rotary and we 00:32:43.93\00:32:49.46 couldn't get down. We hit a huge cavern and had some problems. We 00:32:49.50\00:32:53.74 couldn't get down and we moved away. We told them we would be 00:32:53.77\00:32:58.24 back but it really scared them because here they didn't have 00:32:58.27\00:33:02.74 water. Again we told them that we'd be back. And our lead Bible 00:33:02.78\00:33:10.29 worker man who coordinates all the Bible work, he says you know 00:33:10.32\00:33:14.12 you shouldn't have sacrificed a pig. You should have prayed to 00:33:14.16\00:33:16.79 the Lord who knows where water is. (Amen) So he started off on 00:33:16.83\00:33:21.63 the right foot right there. We came back in with the old cable 00:33:21.66\00:33:25.80 tool and we were able to get down and get the casing, steel 00:33:25.83\00:33:28.27 casing in the ground and things we needed and we completed that 00:33:28.30\00:33:33.21 well and what a happy day that was. I was there when we had the 00:33:33.24\00:33:39.31 well, dedication. It seemed like there were people there from 00:33:39.35\00:33:42.55 several villages probably just because everybody turned out 00:33:42.58\00:33:45.85 from that village and we were able to...we have many Bible 00:33:45.89\00:33:50.53 studies going there in Samorach right now. (Amen) That was 00:33:50.56\00:33:57.50 something that was about impossible getting down that 00:33:57.53\00:33:59.83 hole just the mechanics of it. And the Lord turned that around. 00:33:59.87\00:34:03.34 Praise God, praise God. 00:34:03.37\00:34:04.97 Had a positive for His name. 00:34:05.01\00:34:07.14 Amen. Well you know I know you that are viewers at home are 00:34:07.18\00:34:13.28 wondering how can they participate with your ministry. 00:34:13.31\00:34:17.95 What can you share with us, what can they do to participate 00:34:17.99\00:34:24.23 whether it's help, or can they come down there and work as well 00:34:24.26\00:34:27.83 Financial help? 00:34:27.86\00:34:29.20 Sure. Absolutely. There are many ways that they can help but 00:34:29.23\00:34:32.10 you know if they want to come down there are many things that 00:34:32.13\00:34:39.14 they can do even if they don't understand or know about 00:34:39.17\00:34:45.01 drilling wells. Families have come down and done vacation 00:34:45.05\00:34:52.95 Bible schools. They have come down and they have helped paint 00:34:52.99\00:34:58.33 our apartments. They have come down...you know drillers get 00:34:58.36\00:35:03.10 dirty and sometimes a housewife comes down and the only thing 00:35:03.13\00:35:08.04 that she knows to do is how to clean a house or cook a meal or 00:35:08.07\00:35:13.31 all of that. That's all stuff that can be a huge blessing 00:35:13.34\00:35:18.31 because these people when they're there they want to, the 00:35:18.35\00:35:22.78 drillers especially, they really want to make their time 00:35:22.82\00:35:26.65 effective and so if somebody else can help them with their 00:35:26.69\00:35:29.12 laundry or cook meals for them and all of that, that helps out. 00:35:29.16\00:35:35.76 We also have dentists that come down and do dentistry. We have 00:35:35.80\00:35:40.90 dental hygienists come down and pull teeth or clean teeth. 00:35:40.94\00:35:47.01 Different medical workers doing things in the villages. You know 00:35:47.04\00:35:55.15 this has been a few years ago but we had a big crew come down 00:35:55.18\00:35:58.35 and build a reservoir for the orphanage and school campus. We 00:35:58.39\00:36:03.79 actually built two very large reservoirs and that just takes 00:36:03.83\00:36:08.56 manual labor to do. And so there's a lot of different 00:36:08.60\00:36:12.83 things that people can help out with and that can be something 00:36:12.87\00:36:21.38 that they can actually go down and help with if they're 00:36:21.41\00:36:24.68 interested in actually going to a project. (Okay.) 00:36:24.71\00:36:28.48 Another thing I'd say, we can use translators because 00:36:28.52\00:36:34.56 volunteers that go don't always know Spanish and I know very 00:36:34.59\00:36:38.46 little. I just kind of get by. I wish that I could know it 00:36:38.49\00:36:42.73 better but we need translators. If someone's willing...maybe 00:36:42.76\00:36:48.14 they want to be a mechanic. Maybe they want to help pass out 00:36:48.17\00:36:51.54 Bibles. There's so many things that we can use. (Amen) 00:36:51.57\00:36:56.81 Then on the financial side of things, you know since we all of 00:36:56.85\00:37:01.88 us in the U.S. are volunteers. We pay our own way down. We are 00:37:01.92\00:37:06.55 complete volunteers. None of us get any remuneration for what we 00:37:06.59\00:37:12.29 do for the ministry. But down there it's a little different. 00:37:12.33\00:37:16.23 Since we have national crews helping us now and actually 00:37:16.26\00:37:21.30 doing the drilling, doing the pump work, doing the repairs 00:37:21.34\00:37:25.34 all of that, every one of those needs to be paid. Our Bible 00:37:25.37\00:37:28.68 workers have to be paid. They can't do that for free. And so 00:37:28.71\00:37:35.22 it has become a bigger deal to keep that going year-round and 00:37:35.25\00:37:41.06 so that funding is something you know the Lord is a Lord of 00:37:41.09\00:37:48.73 just enough. An infinite amount of just enough. He always gives 00:37:48.76\00:37:54.80 us what we need. Usually not a penny more. But that is 00:37:54.84\00:38:00.48 something again we now have a crew down there that is there 00:38:00.51\00:38:06.61 year-round drilling these wells It takes more supplies to do 00:38:06.65\00:38:10.79 that and it takes their wages as well. And so all of those 00:38:10.82\00:38:18.33 things take funding to do. 00:38:18.36\00:38:21.06 So for the funding, if a viewer at home wants to send in some 00:38:21.10\00:38:28.84 money how can they participate or what's the website or phone 00:38:28.87\00:38:33.54 number that they can call or how can they contact you? 00:38:33.58\00:38:36.68 Yes we do have (up on the screen as well) we do have a 00:38:36.71\00:38:42.05 the website is H2OForLife.org H2O it's not H2zero 00:38:42.08\00:38:47.19 H2OForLife.org. Another easy link but I better not confuse 00:38:47.22\00:38:55.43 you too much. GuatemalaWells.com and that gets 00:38:55.46\00:38:58.20 you to that. Sometimes it's hard to get that H2OForLife.org and 00:38:58.23\00:39:03.84 we have a number. It's toll-free It's in area (509) 795-1912 00:39:03.87\00:39:10.91 (509) 795-1912 and that will contact us. There's ways to 00:39:10.95\00:39:19.22 donate on the website. We're just delighted that those 00:39:19.25\00:39:24.16 fellows down there are capable. They're happy for a job and 00:39:24.19\00:39:27.10 we're happy that they're carrying out our mission. We go 00:39:27.13\00:39:30.43 now to mentor rather than to drill wells. It's growing. 00:39:30.47\00:39:36.57 You mentioned families coming down to help and I'm thinking 00:39:36.60\00:39:41.48 about maybe there's some children at home who are 00:39:41.51\00:39:45.71 thinking, boy! Mom and dad, that sounds great. I would love to go 00:39:45.75\00:39:49.58 down there and participate with that. Can you use children to 00:39:49.62\00:39:53.76 help? 00:39:53.79\00:39:55.59 Yes. (How) Anywhere from one person up to 35 and we're 00:39:55.62\00:40:01.26 equipped through Bernie our lead man who's in charge of the 00:40:01.30\00:40:06.57 Bible work. It would be most Bible work and I tell you 00:40:06.60\00:40:09.80 children can go down and they can help with these VBS and 00:40:09.84\00:40:13.44 things like that. Any village of 200 or 250 people there's 40-60 00:40:13.48\00:40:19.48 children. And you'll become close friends with those 00:40:19.51\00:40:22.05 children. So kids if you want to go, jump on board. It's very 00:40:22.08\00:40:27.56 rewarding. (Amen) 00:40:27.59\00:40:29.22 My daughters have been down a couple of times. The first time 00:40:29.26\00:40:33.63 that my youngest was down there was in mommy's tummy but my 00:40:33.66\00:40:40.67 oldest actually has been down two times that she remembers and 00:40:40.70\00:40:44.21 they love going and helping out with the vacation Bible school 00:40:44.24\00:40:50.48 They actually help me a little bit on the pump rig, setting a 00:40:50.51\00:40:56.62 pump and stuff like that as well but the friendships that they 00:40:56.65\00:41:01.69 made during those vacation Bible schools and the meetings that 00:41:01.72\00:41:06.56 they were helping with, oh they just loved that. And you know it 00:41:06.59\00:41:11.87 makes our kids understand how good, we have it. We here in the 00:41:11.90\00:41:18.04 U.S., well let's just face it, we flush our toilets with 00:41:18.07\00:41:24.61 drinking water and we don't understand that down in some of 00:41:24.65\00:41:27.85 these countries they don't even have drinking water to drink 00:41:27.88\00:41:31.45 much less flush a toilet with or even have a toilet. And so 00:41:31.49\00:41:35.76 those things that let our kids see that these people are happy 00:41:35.79\00:41:42.40 even though they don't have all of what we have can really 00:41:42.43\00:41:46.87 change their lives. There was a certain gal who went down with 00:41:46.90\00:41:52.37 a family. She came down. She was not really happy to be there. 00:41:52.41\00:41:58.51 She just wanted to be on her device and just really wasn't 00:41:58.55\00:42:02.95 getting into this. But then one day one of the pastors took her 00:42:02.98\00:42:11.53 out and she did some dental work in the village and she really 00:42:11.56\00:42:16.16 got into that. And you know, that changed her whole career. 00:42:16.20\00:42:20.20 She came back and she decided that she was going to go into 00:42:20.24\00:42:24.14 the medical field to help people and so maybe she wasn't excited 00:42:24.17\00:42:29.18 to start with but it changed her attitude on what she wanted to 00:42:29.21\00:42:35.78 do in life and so it was a life- changing thing for her by 00:42:35.82\00:42:42.56 helping somebody else. And that can really change each one of us 00:42:42.59\00:42:46.46 (Amen) And one thing we do have in our sights is a mobile dental 00:42:46.49\00:42:53.20 clinic. This will not be just used two weeks when a group 00:42:53.23\00:42:57.71 comes down. We're planning to hire a dentist in Guatemala. It 00:42:57.74\00:43:01.74 will be used year around with evangelism in mind and people 00:43:01.78\00:43:08.52 that come from the states will have it up and working and they 00:43:08.55\00:43:10.69 can join in on that. And this 11-year-old boy, I can't forget 00:43:10.72\00:43:15.72 he did a complete series of meetings down there. Had many, 00:43:15.76\00:43:20.00 many baptisms. (Wow, praise God) We don't have time to tell of 00:43:20.03\00:43:22.43 miracles that happened there. (Amen, amen) 00:43:22.46\00:43:26.97 So someone wants to go. What's the logistics. Do they need a 00:43:27.00\00:43:29.87 Visa. If they stay how long can they stay? 00:43:29.90\00:43:32.94 Well they just need a passport. They don't need a Visa. You go 00:43:32.97\00:43:36.21 to Guatemala City and then our website talks about how to get 00:43:36.24\00:43:40.92 north; by bus which is fine. or by air. So it's easy if you 00:43:40.95\00:43:48.92 just get to Guatemala City and then we can put you up. We have 00:43:48.96\00:43:53.60 nice apartments with queen beds and safe water and it won't cost 00:43:53.63\00:44:00.37 much to stay there because the food is provided from the school 00:44:00.40\00:44:05.47 on the campus where we stay. The school and orphanage where 00:44:05.51\00:44:09.38 we first drilled. So it's an easy trip. 00:44:09.41\00:44:14.02 Yes this is a fairly easy mission trip. This is not 00:44:14.05\00:44:17.72 you know roughing it so to speak like some of the mission trips 00:44:17.75\00:44:23.49 that we've been on. We have apartments on our shop that have 00:44:23.53\00:44:29.90 accommodations for people and we have other apartments that we 00:44:29.93\00:44:34.07 can use as well. And so I would say a pretty cushy experience 00:44:34.10\00:44:41.01 because you can actually have a warm shower and a few things 00:44:41.04\00:44:45.98 like that that are pretty nice comforts that make it a pretty 00:44:46.01\00:44:50.45 easy experience but yet you can still experience this third 00:44:50.49\00:44:56.16 world country and what it takes to help people. 00:44:56.19\00:44:59.79 Okay. So if a family goes or individual they're going to need 00:44:59.83\00:45:05.93 to take something. Do you have any recommended things that they 00:45:05.97\00:45:10.24 need to take with them for a trip down to Guatemala. 00:45:10.27\00:45:13.98 Yeah, some anti-itch cream. If there's any bug to bite it'll 00:45:14.01\00:45:19.85 be in Guatemala. Other than that you have to pay close attention 00:45:19.88\00:45:25.92 to you know your hygiene and what you eat and what you drink. 00:45:25.95\00:45:30.99 But we have safe water there and there's bottled water all 00:45:31.03\00:45:37.10 through Guatemala. And you would want to see some sights like 00:45:37.13\00:45:40.70 Tikal right next to these major Mayan ruins. Things like that. 00:45:40.74\00:45:47.04 But it's encouraging to us when people join us and it would 00:45:47.08\00:45:51.95 certainly, be an encouragement to them. 00:45:51.98\00:45:53.38 I would also say bring layers because in the morning it can be 00:45:53.42\00:45:58.85 a little bit cool but in the afternoon it can be pretty warm 00:45:58.89\00:46:02.59 and there are times when it rains pretty hard as well. So 00:46:02.62\00:46:06.53 that's definitely...And we're happy to you know speak with 00:46:06.56\00:46:11.33 people specifically. Contact us on the website or the phone 00:46:11.37\00:46:15.64 number. We also have some frequently asked questions on 00:46:15.67\00:46:21.11 the website that you could look at those as well to see if this 00:46:21.14\00:46:25.85 is really for me. But we're always happy to chat with people 00:46:25.88\00:46:30.59 about that. 00:46:30.62\00:46:31.95 Allow me to go back and answer your question a little more how 00:46:31.99\00:46:35.12 it started. (Okay) We adopted our daughter from Guatemala in 00:46:35.16\00:46:40.36 1985. We had Rod and his older brother. They were 11 and 9 and 00:46:40.40\00:46:46.30 we didn't want an infant but we thought we'd like a daughter. 00:46:46.33\00:46:50.34 And we adopted our daughter Summer in 1985. So we were 00:46:50.37\00:46:56.91 always you know kind of open and interested in Guatemala and we 00:46:56.95\00:47:00.02 had an opportunity to go there in 1997. She was a product, a 00:47:00.05\00:47:06.35 victim, of the civil war that went for 40 years. Her village 00:47:06.39\00:47:09.72 was wiped out and some time later an army general came by in 00:47:09.76\00:47:15.43 his helicopter and saw this little gal rummaging in the 00:47:15.46\00:47:18.83 garbage outside the village trying to find something to eat. 00:47:18.87\00:47:21.44 He landed and picked her up, took her right to the orphanage. 00:47:21.47\00:47:26.54 (Praise God) And that's our daughter. (Hmmmm) So Guatemala 00:47:26.57\00:47:35.18 has part of our heart. (Yes definitely) So it's out of that 00:47:35.22\00:47:41.56 that we realized this orphanage and school doesn't have safe 00:47:41.59\00:47:46.19 water and so in '97 we started going there and then in 2005 we 00:47:46.23\00:47:52.17 started well drilling. 00:47:52.20\00:47:53.54 (Okay) So you were blessed with a daughter and you're blessing 00:47:53.57\00:47:57.37 them with water. (Amen) I am so inspired. So what if we wanted 00:47:57.41\00:48:00.11 to go on a mission trip? Ricky does the preaching, I do 00:48:00.14\00:48:04.05 some health presentations. (Oh yes) How would they coordinate 00:48:04.08\00:48:06.72 that? Any time of year or is there a specific time of year? 00:48:06.75\00:48:09.48 Any time of year is fine because Bernie is there. He's a 00:48:09.52\00:48:13.46 tremendous host. He's bilingual. He's been on this set before 00:48:13.49\00:48:19.13 at 3ABN. If you go in the winter my wife and I go January and 00:48:19.16\00:48:25.53 February. We'd love to see you. So come if you can. If it's 00:48:25.57\00:48:31.81 another time of year that suites you better, yes, any time of 00:48:31.84\00:48:34.61 year is fine. The health work is greatly appreciated. 00:48:34.64\00:48:41.85 So we need to start learning Spanish. (Hey yeah) 00:48:41.88\00:48:46.76 Well if you know black beans and tortillas at least you won't go 00:48:46.79\00:48:55.13 hungry down there. (Right, right) 00:48:55.16\00:48:57.07 You know I'm thinking about the wells and two questions come to 00:48:57.10\00:49:04.41 mind. When we're coming up with a site for a location how do you 00:49:04.44\00:49:10.88 go about finding that and then also do you ever use solar at 00:49:10.91\00:49:15.45 all for any of the wells? 00:49:15.48\00:49:17.49 Yes we do use solar and some of them that are really deep that 00:49:17.52\00:49:20.96 we couldn't access with a hand pump, we used solar. Now with 00:49:20.99\00:49:24.63 a life pump that's kind of changed because we can even do 00:49:24.66\00:49:27.13 it with a life pump if it deep. So solar works great. As far as 00:49:27.16\00:49:33.10 sighting we do it on public property so it's going to be in 00:49:33.13\00:49:36.57 a church yard or it's going to be in the soccer field or at the 00:49:36.60\00:49:38.81 school or the local village clinic. We don't do it on 00:49:38.84\00:49:45.21 private property. And that way it's open to the people on the 00:49:45.25\00:49:50.72 street. The whole village has access to that well and that's 00:49:50.75\00:49:54.29 important to us. It so happens the Lord put water under about 00:49:54.32\00:49:58.49 95 or more percent of the earth's surface so it's hard to 00:49:58.53\00:50:01.63 miss when you look at it that way. We've wondered a little bit 00:50:01.66\00:50:04.90 about that when we had to go deeper and deeper and deeper, 00:50:04.93\00:50:08.20 but it all works out. 00:50:08.24\00:50:11.04 Amen. Amen. Well I can see that our time is almost up and before 00:50:11.07\00:50:16.71 we're going to take little break But before we go I wanted to let 00:50:16.75\00:50:22.05 the viewers know, you may be wondering how you can 00:50:22.08\00:50:27.19 participate, how you can support this ministry and you maybe want 00:50:27.22\00:50:31.76 to maybe come out with you and your family. Or maybe you're an 00:50:31.79\00:50:35.10 individual. Maybe you're a well driller, maybe you are a dentist 00:50:35.13\00:50:39.53 or nurse. Whatever your capacity you want to get involved.
