You're the 00:01:23.78\00:01:28.38 president of Ultimate Mission and the founder. (Yes) Yes 00:01:28.42\00:01:32.79 welcome, welcome. It's great to have you here. We've got Dr. 00:01:32.82\00:01:37.16 John Anderson. You're the board chairman of Ultimate Mission. 00:01:37.19\00:01:39.19 It's great to have you here as well. (Thank you) Yes. So before 00:01:39.23\00:01:43.97 we dive into what Ultimate Mission is all about, before we 00:01:44.00\00:01:47.87 go into your background and all of that, we're going to be 00:01:47.90\00:01:51.01 blessed in song and bringing us that song is going to be 00:01:51.04\00:01:54.31 Layke Jones and he'll be singing Follow Me. 00:01:54.34\00:01:57.35 ¤ ¤ 00:01:57.38\00:02:12.46 ¤ I traveled down a lonely road and no one seemed to care ¤ 00:02:12.49\00:02:23.81 ¤ The burden on my weary back had bowed me to despair ¤ 00:02:23.84\00:02:34.15 ¤ I oft complained to Jesus how folks were treating me ¤ 00:02:34.18\00:02:43.76 ¤ and then I heard Him say so tenderly ¤ 00:02:43.79\00:02:58.77 ¤ My feet were also weary upon the Calvary road ¤ 00:02:58.81\00:03:08.82 ¤ The cross became so heavy I fell beneath the load ¤ 00:03:08.85\00:03:18.96 ¤ Oh, be faithful weary pilgrim the morning I can see ¤ 00:03:18.99\00:03:29.70 ¤ Just lift your cross and follow close to me ¤ 00:03:29.74\00:03:44.55 ¤ ¤ 00:03:44.59\00:03:46.62 ¤ Oh Jesus if I die upon a foreign field someday ¤ 00:03:46.65\00:03:53.60 ¤ T 'would be no more than love demands ¤ 00:03:53.63\00:03:58.83 ¤ no less could I repay ¤ 00:03:58.87\00:04:03.10 ¤ No great love hath mortal man than for a friend to die ¤ 00:04:03.14\00:04:11.68 ¤ These are the words He gently spoke to me ¤ 00:04:11.71\00:04:24.16 ¤ If just a cup of water I place within your hands ¤ 00:04:24.19\00:04:32.83 ¤ Then just a cup of water is all that I demand ¤ 00:04:32.87\00:04:45.48 ¤ But if by death to living they can thy glory see ¤ 00:04:45.51\00:04:56.96 ¤ I'll take my cross and follow ¤ 00:04:56.99\00:05:12.77 ¤ I'll Take My Cross and Follow Close to Thee ¤ 00:05:12.81\00:05:42.10 Amen, What a beautiful song with a beautiful message. Take my 00:05:42.14\00:05:45.67 cross and follow. That's wonderful and really that's what 00:05:45.71\00:05:49.98 we're discussing as a mission field and the work that is being 00:05:50.01\00:05:54.22 done in the mission field. Jim I want to come to you because I 00:05:54.25\00:05:58.99 know that you have a story. I know that you have a powerful 00:05:59.02\00:06:02.49 testimony and so I want to dive into your background a little 00:06:02.52\00:06:05.96 bit. And I know Dr. Anderson has a powerful testimony as well. 00:06:05.99\00:06:09.86 And we're going to get to that in just a moment. But Jim tell 00:06:09.90\00:06:13.74 us a little bit about your background. 00:06:13.77\00:06:16.64 (Jim Reynolds) Well I was brought up in the Seventh-day 00:06:16.67\00:06:20.34 Adventist Church but a wonderful Seventh-day Adventist mother 00:06:20.38\00:06:23.38 At 16 I decided it wasn't quite as exciting as I would have 00:06:23.41\00:06:28.48 liked. And so I started going to public schools. I'd gone to 00:06:28.52\00:06:32.22 Adventist schools until that time and then I chose to go to 00:06:32.25\00:06:34.79 public schools and I went the wrong direction, for 26 years 00:06:34.82\00:06:39.89 I went the wrong direction. Well you're going to see a picture of 00:06:39.93\00:06:44.70 me walking around with a prosthetic limb and that 00:06:44.73\00:06:47.50 happened during that time. I was on a motor bike and I got in 00:06:47.54\00:06:50.54 a wreck and had to have a leg amputation. That didn't bring me 00:06:50.57\00:06:54.88 back to God. It took a lot more to come back. And so in 2006 I 00:06:54.91\00:06:59.78 finally decided because of some of the things that were 00:06:59.81\00:07:03.02 happening with my children, some really hard things that 00:07:03.05\00:07:06.39 were happening with my kids, and I finally decided I need Jesus 00:07:06.42\00:07:10.06 again. And so I got on my knees I told God that I would do 00:07:10.09\00:07:14.13 whatever He wanted if He would just help me save my children. 00:07:14.16\00:07:16.97 And so when you tell God you'll do whatever He wants you to do 00:07:17.00\00:07:21.84 You better have your work boots handy because God is going to 00:07:21.87\00:07:25.11 put you to work. And in 2006 I came back into the church right 00:07:25.14\00:07:30.58 in the middle of an evangelism series that was just starting 00:07:30.61\00:07:33.45 and I offered to be part of that evangelism series to help out 00:07:33.48\00:07:37.25 from there and God just put me into one ministry after another. 00:07:37.29\00:07:42.06 And then finally in 2009, I was cofounder for what is now 00:07:42.09\00:07:47.46 Ultimate Mission. 00:07:47.50\00:07:48.83 Ah, that's awesome. I don't want to go that far yet but we're 00:07:48.86\00:07:52.10 going to get into that. But that's incredible. How important 00:07:52.13\00:07:56.44 would you say it is that initial training that you had as a child 00:07:56.47\00:08:02.64 You know the Bible talks about train up a child in the way he 00:08:02.68\00:08:04.81 should go (right). So how important would you say that 00:08:04.85\00:08:07.32 training was because you came back to that. 00:08:07.35\00:08:10.29 Yeah, critical. Because when I came back I already had that 00:08:10.32\00:08:14.16 foundation. And actually through those 26 years I had that 00:08:14.19\00:08:18.19 foundation. Because I got into some things and went some places 00:08:18.23\00:08:20.96 that I shouldn't have gone and the drugs and alcohol and 00:08:21.00\00:08:25.33 different things like that, but my friends, you know, they told 00:08:25.37\00:08:27.44 me later they said there was always a line you wouldn't cross 00:08:27.47\00:08:30.44 You would go so far but you wouldn't go any further. And I 00:08:30.47\00:08:34.24 have friends right now they're basically on their death beds 00:08:34.28\00:08:37.45 and they're my age because of the drugs and alcohol. But 00:08:37.48\00:08:41.62 fortunately God had a hold of me He had a reason for me to 00:08:41.65\00:08:45.52 continue and pulled me back in in time. 00:08:45.55\00:08:47.82 Amen, amen. We have a similar testimony, similar. 00:08:47.86\00:08:52.76 Dr. Anderson, what about you. Were you always in the church? 00:08:52.79\00:08:56.16 Tell us a little bit about your background. 00:08:56.20\00:08:59.27 Well my story's not nearly as interesting. Actually kind of 00:08:59.30\00:09:01.50 boring compared to Jim's. I grew up in the church. I have a 00:09:01.54\00:09:05.51 great Adventist heritage in my family. I'm thankful for that. 00:09:05.54\00:09:07.88 I think I'm a fifth generation Adventist and I pretty much 00:09:07.91\00:09:12.48 stuck with the church throughout For me, it's really been more of 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.88 really a decades-long journey to learn to be less selfish and 00:09:14.92\00:09:20.99 how to surrender and those kind of things that don't come 00:09:21.02\00:09:24.33 naturally for some of us. But, yeah, the church has always been 00:09:24.36\00:09:27.90 a part of my life. 00:09:27.93\00:09:29.26 That's not boring. That's exciting because you stayed the 00:09:29.30\00:09:33.80 course which is a tremendous blessing. 00:09:33.84\00:09:37.67 And I told John trade my testimony for his any day of the 00:09:37.71\00:09:42.04 week. (Yes, yes) I would absolutely trade it because 00:09:42.08\00:09:44.95 it's 20 miles in and 20 miles out. So you go in, you have that 00:09:44.98\00:09:48.48 exciting testimony but you deal with that pain. (Yeah) And so 00:09:48.52\00:09:52.52 yeah I'd trade for your testimony any day of the week. 00:09:52.55\00:09:55.22 It's great to have a not-so- interesting testimony.(Laughter) 00:09:55.26\00:10:01.50 I'm not complaining but and not to give the impression that I've 00:10:01.53\00:10:04.67 always been on the straight and narrow but... 00:10:04.70\00:10:07.84 But now important is your personal devotional life. 00:10:07.87\00:10:13.01 It's critically important. It's something that you know is 00:10:13.04\00:10:17.08 always a struggle in our daily lives to try to set aside that 00:10:17.11\00:10:20.28 time. That's always been a challenge for me, but it makes 00:10:20.32\00:10:22.32 such a difference. And when I'm not doing it faithfully I really 00:10:22.35\00:10:26.39 feel that. 00:10:26.42\00:10:27.96 And you're a doctor. What kind of doctor are you? 00:10:27.99\00:10:30.13 So I'm an orthopedic surgeon, treat bones and joints. 00:10:30.16\00:10:32.53 What made you want to go into that line of work? 00:10:32.56\00:10:35.10 Well, a couple things. Um, I was real interested in sports 00:10:35.13\00:10:39.63 growing up. I liked to play basketball and other sports. 00:10:39.67\00:10:42.14 I'm interested in those kinds of injuries that occur and also 00:10:42.17\00:10:45.61 just have a guess kind of a mechanical mind. I like to fix 00:10:45.64\00:10:49.54 things. I like tangible problems that can be solved and so that 00:10:49.58\00:10:53.31 just...it was really the only thing in medicine that I wanted 00:10:53.35\00:10:56.58 to do. 00:10:56.62\00:10:57.95 Mmm, mhuh, mhuh. So let's transition into Ultimate Mission 00:10:57.99\00:11:02.46 So you said you started that in what year now? 00:11:02.49\00:11:04.96 2009, (2009) Yes. 00:11:04.99\00:11:07.53 And how did that come about? 00:11:07.56\00:11:09.00 Well, as I was saying, when I came back God put me to work 00:11:09.03\00:11:13.47 Because Jim not doing anything is not a good thing, right? You 00:11:13.50\00:11:16.84 need me doing something. So God put me to work and I was out 00:11:16.87\00:11:20.78 helping in this one ministry where we were feeding 300 to 500 00:11:20.81\00:11:24.55 people every Sunday. And a man names Lynn Berlin, he was in his 00:11:24.58\00:11:28.72 80s, came up to me and he said Jim, I'm having a hard time 00:11:28.75\00:11:32.32 getting people out of the pews and into the community trying to 00:11:32.35\00:11:35.96 help out and he said I'm going to start a non-profit 00:11:35.99\00:11:40.06 organization dedicated to getting people out into, out 00:11:40.10\00:11:43.30 into the communities. I said, Lynn, that sounds like a great 00:11:43.33\00:11:46.07 idea. He had started this ministry that had been going for 00:11:46.10\00:11:48.07 17 years but he was over 80. He was in his 80s and you know he 00:11:48.10\00:11:53.07 was all there but it was you know still...a little bit crazy. 00:11:53.11\00:11:56.64 So I said okay...I don't know if I should say that but there it 00:11:56.68\00:12:00.85 is. I says okay Lynn that's fine You start that ministry. That 00:12:00.88\00:12:04.49 sounds like a great idea. The next Sunday I'm out there 00:12:04.52\00:12:06.96 helping him again. And here comes Lynn across the lot at me 00:12:06.99\00:12:10.06 and he's got a piece of paper in his hand. He said, Jim, I did 00:12:10.09\00:12:13.36 it. I go what did you do? He said I started that ministry. He 00:12:13.40\00:12:16.33 said and here's the paper, he said, and I made you president. 00:12:16.36\00:12:21.00 (Wow) That's how Ultimate Mission started. I had no idea 00:12:21.04\00:12:24.31 what I was going to do with this ministry, not a clue. 00:12:24.34\00:12:26.74 Wow. That's incredible. That's incredible. So what was the 00:12:26.78\00:12:31.01 first step after that, like what did you do? 00:12:31.05\00:12:34.28 Well I went to the Oregon Conference and Shawn Boonstra 00:12:34.32\00:12:38.09 had just come in 2007 and so there was that after of that. 00:12:38.12\00:12:45.33 So they had Bible Worker Boot Camp and I thought you know what 00:12:45.36\00:12:49.16 would be cool. Let's get as many church members as we can and 00:12:49.20\00:12:53.00 let's continue what It Is Written did during that time 00:12:53.03\00:12:55.84 and let's start a Bible Worker Boot Camp and just continue it. 00:12:55.87\00:12:59.27 And so I went to the Oregon Conference and worked with the 00:12:59.31\00:13:01.34 Oregon Conference and we started an Ultimate Mission Bible Worker 00:13:01.38\00:13:04.38 Boot Camp and that was our next project. And so from there then 00:13:04.41\00:13:10.19 we were originally going to be in evangelism. Yeah that's what 00:13:10.22\00:13:12.72 we were going to do is evangelism and so we did some 00:13:12.75\00:13:15.12 evangelism series. Matter of fact that's kind of how we ended 00:13:15.16\00:13:19.03 up in India. We were supposed to do an evangelism series. And I 00:13:19.06\00:13:24.63 called Jim Rennie from Child Impact. And I had gone to 00:13:24.67\00:13:27.47 India a couple times and 00:13:27.50\00:13:28.84 once with Jim Rennie and he was going to sponsor me to be an 00:13:29.00\00:13:32.84 evangelist in India. So I got all the sermons together. I even 00:13:32.87\00:13:37.81 did the sermons here at home and then I was going to tweak them a 00:13:37.85\00:13:40.25 little for India. I got them all together and then I was going to 00:13:40.28\00:13:43.35 India. It was just a couple months before we left. Jim calls 00:13:43.39\00:13:46.59 me and he says they're really cracking down on evangelists in 00:13:46.62\00:13:49.56 India so you can't, we can't do this series. And I had just 00:13:49.59\00:13:54.46 started running a program called Healthy Heart in Oregon. So we 00:13:54.50\00:13:59.20 had a deal with Clover Foods where we could take groups of 00:13:59.23\00:14:02.60 church members into Fred Meyer Stores, Clover Food Stores, and 00:14:02.64\00:14:06.17 do blood pressure checks, health risk assessments. So I 00:14:06.21\00:14:09.34 just had that started there and said well what if we did a 00:14:09.38\00:14:12.68 health series instead of an evangelism series? And Jim said 00:14:12.71\00:14:15.88 that sounds good. So we went to India. We did a health series 00:14:15.92\00:14:19.85 and one of the parts of doing the health series was we were 00:14:19.89\00:14:24.19 going to train 30 gospel outreach workers to do medical 00:14:24.23\00:14:27.90 missionary work while we were there. And so we trained these 00:14:27.93\00:14:30.93 30 gospel outreach workers and they went home and they trained 00:14:30.97\00:14:35.20 their wives. And they took this book that we gave them called 00:14:35.24\00:14:38.67 Where There Is No Doctor and they took it home and one man 00:14:38.71\00:14:41.81 trained his wife. And these women were going out on their 00:14:41.84\00:14:45.95 own and doing medical missionary work. So we thought, you know 00:14:45.98\00:14:50.05 what, we may training the wrong people. So in 2014, we came back 00:14:50.09\00:14:56.76 and we started training the wives of gospel outreach workers 00:14:56.79\00:14:59.69 and other Bible workers and other pastors in India and that 00:14:59.73\00:15:03.73 is basically how our ministry started. 00:15:03.77\00:15:06.03 Nice, nice. So what is the mission of Ultimate Missions? 00:15:06.07\00:15:10.51 Hmm. Well you know given our humble beginnings and we're 00:15:10.54\00:15:16.24 still a humble beginning, but our mission in the beginning was 00:15:16.28\00:15:20.85 to get as many people out telling people about Jesus as 00:15:20.88\00:15:23.22 possible. That was our ministry. We wanted to get people out of 00:15:23.25\00:15:27.02 the churches, out of the pews, into the mission fields and 00:15:27.06\00:15:30.13 that's still our mission, but our mission has evolved into 00:15:30.16\00:15:34.43 something where what we do now is we take medical teams in two 00:15:34.46\00:15:39.33 different countries like Ethiopia, the Philippines, India 00:15:39.37\00:15:43.04 and we train Bible worker wives to do medical missionary work. 00:15:43.07\00:15:46.98 So basic public health work. And then we give them a stipend. So 00:15:47.01\00:15:52.61 actually, they still work for the Adventist conference, right? 00:15:52.65\00:15:55.35 They're employees of the Adventist conference. The money 00:15:55.38\00:15:57.79 we send for their stipends goes through the General Conference. 00:15:57.82\00:16:01.62 (Okay, okay) But what we do is we train them and we kind of 00:16:01.66\00:16:06.59 manage them, make sure we're getting all the reports. 00:16:06.63\00:16:08.56 I was just 00:16:08.60\00:16:09.93 looking over some this morning. We get about 1000 reports a week 00:16:09.96\00:16:11.97 Oh yeah. Just pictures and reports by the hundreds all the 00:16:12.00\00:16:15.40 time. And so these women are employees of the conference but 00:16:15.44\00:16:23.08 we give the money so that they have stipends and we do the 00:16:23.11\00:16:26.78 training and then we kind of keep the organization and the 00:16:26.82\00:16:31.99 accountability. 00:16:32.02\00:16:33.36 Gotcha, Gotcha. Yeah that's important. You know we actually 00:16:33.39\00:16:35.49 have a video that kind of highlights a little bit about 00:16:35.52\00:16:38.49 what you do and really shows the need for it. Set that up for us. 00:16:38.53\00:16:44.53 Tell us a little bit about what we're going to see. 00:16:44.57\00:16:47.00 So I have a good friend, Wes Peppers, who's with It Is 00:16:47.04\00:16:49.34 Written. And Wes and I were talking and he was talking about 00:16:49.37\00:16:52.77 him and John doing a program in Ethiopia and they wanted to do 00:16:52.81\00:16:56.85 a medical work in front of their evangelism series and he knew 00:16:56.88\00:17:00.58 what I did with the women so he says well why don't you join up 00:17:00.62\00:17:03.45 with us? Let's go to Ethiopia and you can help us out with the 00:17:03.49\00:17:07.46 medical work in front of the evangelism series. So we brought 00:17:07.49\00:17:11.39 our ladies that we had trained and the Gospel Outreach Workers 00:17:11.43\00:17:16.73 and we all came together with It Is Written and did this 00:17:16.77\00:17:21.27 project in Ethiopia and it was amazing. 00:17:21.30\00:17:24.77 Beautiful, beautiful. Well let's take a look at that video 00:17:24.81\00:17:26.78 right now. 00:17:26.81\00:17:29.51 ¤ ¤ 00:17:29.54\00:17:49.83 For years Ultimate Mission has been hearing a call to go to 00:17:49.86\00:17:52.03 Ethiopia, but every time we made plans God seemed to close the 00:17:52.07\00:17:56.30 door. In 2021 we again made plans but the civil war in the 00:17:56.34\00:18:00.58 country became too intense and we had to cancel just three days 00:18:00.61\00:18:04.61 before we were to fly out. In 2022, It Is Written asked 00:18:04.65\00:18:10.09 Ultimate Mission to partner with them to run the health programs 00:18:10.12\00:18:13.25 in front of the evangelism meetings Wes Peppers and 00:18:13.29\00:18:16.46 John Bradshaw were holding. This time the door stayed open. This 00:18:16.49\00:18:20.76 time God said yes. 00:18:20.80\00:18:22.13 ¤ ¤ 00:18:22.16\00:18:34.41 The first thing you notice is the extreme hardship and need. 00:18:34.44\00:18:36.04 Everywhere you turn you see broken down elderly people and 00:18:36.08\00:18:40.55 mothers desperate to feed and care for their babies. The 00:18:40.58\00:18:43.92 poverty level is very high. Ethiopia runs at about 19 00:18:43.95\00:18:47.89 percent unemployment. Jobs are scarce and pay is very, very low 00:18:47.92\00:18:53.29 Soon however you can't help but notice the beauty of the African 00:18:53.33\00:18:58.93 landscape. That was powerful. I mean we're seeing Christ's method of 00:23:28.37\00:23:33.44 evangelism taking place. And that is incredible. Dr. Anderson 00:23:33.48\00:23:36.54 What was your experience like in Ethiopia? 00:23:36.58\00:23:39.75 Well, how much time do you have? Um there were a lot of powerful 00:23:39.78\00:23:46.45 experiences. We just saw the massive baptism, 1700 people. 00:23:46.49\00:23:50.43 That was certainly a high point. But the things that stick in 00:23:50.46\00:23:53.46 my mind are the are the individual interactions with 00:23:53.50\00:23:56.03 patients. So we ran a health clinic during the day, late 00:23:56.06\00:23:59.13 morning and then afternoon up until the meetings and it was 00:23:59.17\00:24:02.77 just an open, walk-in clinic, you know, in a courtyard area 00:24:02.80\00:24:06.37 just inside the street. And so we would have hundreds of people 00:24:06.41\00:24:09.58 just trying to press their way in. We had to use different 00:24:09.61\00:24:12.01 crowd control methods to try to handle things and triage the 00:24:12.05\00:24:16.42 patients and we would see as many as we could, 100, 150 00:24:16.45\00:24:18.82 patients a day. And you know they had a variety of problems. 00:24:18.85\00:24:24.09 Many of them were simple. They needed to eat differently, they 00:24:24.13\00:24:26.63 needed to drink more water. That was a huge problem. But we had 00:24:26.66\00:24:29.70 some also pretty dramatic experiences. One morning I was 00:24:29.73\00:24:33.97 just coming out of the hotel into the courtyard out to the 00:24:34.00\00:24:38.27 van and I saw out on the sidewalk this lady just fell 00:24:38.31\00:24:42.31 head first, just biffed it on the sidewalk and started 00:24:42.34\00:24:44.21 flopping around. She was having a seizure. And so people 00:24:44.25\00:24:47.25 gathered around. She was carrying like a two-year-old 00:24:47.28\00:24:50.82 child, she'd kind of landed on top of. People pulled the child 00:24:50.85\00:24:54.22 out. The kid was okay and you know kind of guarded her while 00:24:54.26\00:24:59.83 the seizure was finishing and then sat her up. It was kind of 00:24:59.86\00:25:02.70 interesting. You know there were 10 of 15 people around. 00:25:02.73\00:25:05.93 Everybody pulled out a little bit of money to give to her and 00:25:05.97\00:25:07.77 we ended up taking her first to our clinic and making 00:25:07.80\00:25:12.51 arrangements for her to get some medication, some transportation 00:25:12.54\00:25:15.68 And we did that with a number of different people that we took 00:25:15.71\00:25:17.55 to the hospital and got them treated for a shockingly small 00:25:17.58\00:25:21.62 among of money. Sometimes $5 We had a patient that we took in 00:25:21.65\00:25:26.05 that spent the night in the hospital for a cardiac workup 00:25:26.09\00:25:28.72 and the whole package, overnight all the tests was like $30. 00:25:28.76\00:25:32.36 That is incredible because when I see a hospital bill that I 00:25:32.39\00:25:38.37 receive that thing's pretty big. Pretty big. 00:25:38.40\00:25:41.54 Make a huge impact for a small amount of money. 00:25:41.57\00:25:44.21 Absolutely, absolutely. And what were some of the responses from 00:25:44.24\00:25:47.81 the people that you helped? 00:25:47.84\00:25:49.54 So they were very grateful obviously. I mean there were 00:25:49.58\00:25:53.55 people you know that had had problems for months and years 00:25:53.58\00:25:56.52 that had not been addressed. These were people that couldn't 00:25:56.55\00:26:00.56 afford to even pay these small amounts that we're talking about 00:26:00.59\00:26:02.86 and so for many of these people it was life-changing. 00:26:02.89\00:26:05.73 And how did you get involved with Ultimate Mission? 00:26:05.76\00:26:10.50 So I think that the way the story went is that I met Jim at 00:26:10.53\00:26:13.74 camp meeting and we kind of had some interests in common and 00:26:13.77\00:26:18.91 ended up getting invited to the fundraising banquet which was 00:26:18.94\00:26:23.75 held that year at the Portland Hospital. The thing that sticks 00:26:23.78\00:26:27.52 out in my mind, I remember the presentations at that banquet 00:26:27.55\00:26:30.25 and at the time Ultimate Mission as an organization didn't even 00:26:30.29\00:26:34.56 have to file a tax return because its total budget was 00:26:34.59\00:26:36.79 less than $50,000. So they presented you know what they'd 00:26:36.83\00:26:42.33 done in the past year with these ladies that had been trained in 00:26:42.36\00:26:44.73 community health work and they had done 88,000 home visits. 00:26:44.77\00:26:49.04 on a budget of less than $50,000 (88,000?) Yeah, 88,000 home 00:26:49.07\00:26:54.18 visits. That's individual homes visits, individual homes visited 00:26:54.21\00:26:55.78 You know, they'd spent half an hour or an hour learning about 00:26:55.81\00:26:59.11 the family, teaching them about their health issues, what they 00:26:59.15\00:27:02.38 can do differently and so to me that really hit me pretty hard 00:27:02.42\00:27:07.89 as far as bang for the buck, as far as what you can accomplish 00:27:07.92\00:27:11.59 with a small investment. 00:27:11.63\00:27:12.96 Yes, yes, absolutely, absolutely Who benefits from the work that 00:27:12.99\00:27:17.33 the ladies do? 00:27:17.37\00:27:18.70 Well, there's a lot of benefits. This is the amazing thing. This 00:27:18.73\00:27:23.54 is how we figured that God had given us this idea because 00:27:23.57\00:27:29.08 there's so many different benefits. Number one, of course, 00:27:29.11\00:27:31.51 the people that are being treated benefit because she's 00:27:31.55\00:27:34.28 going out every day and she's visiting the people in the 00:27:34.32\00:27:38.45 villages. And if you've been into some of these villages I 00:27:38.49\00:27:41.59 mean there are people...There's paralyzed people from stroke. 00:27:41.62\00:27:46.06 There's people that have all kinds of diseases and problems, 00:27:46.09\00:27:50.33 just amazing. So these people are benefitting. But also the 00:27:50.37\00:27:55.60 children are benefitting because what she's doing...the thing 00:27:55.64\00:27:59.71 with training women is we say that we teach women to teach 00:27:59.74\00:28:03.14 mothers to keep their babies alive. Because it's one thing as 00:28:03.18\00:28:06.28 a man going into these villages but a man is not going to be 00:28:06.31\00:28:09.98 able to go connect with a woman. Right? It's just taboo in most 00:28:10.02\00:28:14.12 cultures and so a woman connecting with a woman... 00:28:14.16\00:28:16.36 And one of the things that really, that I knew we had it 00:28:16.39\00:28:20.56 going is...we did our first training. So what we do in 00:28:20.60\00:28:23.77 training is we do the work in the mornings and then in the 00:28:23.80\00:28:27.84 afternoons we go out into the field and we kind of do rounds 00:28:27.87\00:28:31.24 in the field. And these women brought their babies with them 00:28:31.27\00:28:34.68 and I was like oh no we forgot to tell the women not to bring 00:28:34.71\00:28:38.25 their kids. They brought their kids. So we have women out there 00:28:38.28\00:28:42.18 holding a baby and visiting in the field. And I thought this 00:28:42.22\00:28:45.49 was going to be a disaster. But it was one of the most powerful 00:28:45.52\00:28:48.06 things I'd ever seen. Because here's a woman holding a baby 00:28:48.09\00:28:51.59 on her hip talking to another woman about keeping her baby 00:28:51.63\00:28:55.53 clean and healthy. And then they're hugging. I mean it was 00:28:55.56\00:28:59.20 just so incredibly powerful. And that first day on that first 00:28:59.23\00:29:02.70 training I go we've got something here. We've got 00:29:02.74\00:29:06.51 something. Also see the pastors...like the Southern Asia 00:29:06.54\00:29:10.05 Division is probably one of the poorest divisions in the world. 00:29:10.08\00:29:12.81 And they really can't pay their pastors as pastors should be 00:29:12.85\00:29:18.05 paid or all the time get all their...Well with Gospel 00:29:18.09\00:29:21.56 Outreach and some of the Bible workers that their money, some 00:29:21.59\00:29:23.93 times, sometimes they may get it a month later or whatever 00:29:23.96\00:29:27.53 So especially during COVID it was really bad so these families 00:29:27.56\00:29:34.27 don't have a whole lot of money coming in and sometimes the 00:29:34.30\00:29:37.17 pastors have to go get another job driving a taxi, working in 00:29:37.21\00:29:41.11 the field but now the wife is now making money so now the 00:29:41.14\00:29:46.35 pastors benefit because they can stick to their job as pastors 00:29:46.38\00:29:49.58 and the family benefits. And we've even watched some of these 00:29:49.62\00:29:54.26 women and some of these children as we've trained them and then 00:29:54.29\00:29:57.59 go back the next year after getting a full time salary and 00:29:57.63\00:30:00.70 they've changed. Their face has changed. They're filled out they 00:30:00.73\00:30:05.30 don't have dark rings under their eyes which you know are a 00:30:05.33\00:30:08.24 sign of malnutrition. The children are not lethargic. The 00:30:08.27\00:30:11.47 children are running around being four-year-olds when the 00:30:11.51\00:30:15.04 a year before we thought they were one-and-a-half or two years 00:30:15.08\00:30:17.25 old. You know because they were so small, they had stunted 00:30:17.28\00:30:20.55 growth. Now having a full-time job, getting a stipend and 00:30:20.58\00:30:25.95 learning about health. When you teach you learn. 00:30:25.99\00:30:28.02 It elevates their status in the community too and in their 00:30:28.06\00:30:32.09 family. And we also have a literacy program that we just 00:30:32.13\00:30:35.73 started too. A lot of women don't have the ability to go to 00:30:35.76\00:30:39.57 school and learn how to read and don't forget about the most 00:30:39.60\00:30:42.44 important downstream effect which is lives are changed for 00:30:42.47\00:30:46.57 the kingdom. People in many of these countries you cannot 00:30:46.61\00:30:51.41 openly evangelize and so this is the way, this is the opening 00:30:51.45\00:30:55.38 wedge of the gospel. And so they can get into homes that way and 00:30:55.42\00:30:58.29 people are converted. 00:30:58.32\00:31:00.06 That was my next question is how is Jesus lifted up in this work? 00:31:00.09\00:31:02.82 Well, that's how it works. They develop relationships in the 00:31:02.86\00:31:07.50 community and over time people develop a trust for them and 00:31:07.53\00:31:11.93 they are...You know stories are told about many of these 00:31:11.97\00:31:15.90 countries have strong religious preferences so in India you know 00:31:15.94\00:31:18.61 maybe the family's Hindu and they will not allow a Christian 00:31:18.64\00:31:23.31 to come in the house. But when that lady has a stethoscope 00:31:23.35\00:31:25.51 around her neck and a blood pressure cuff then everything 00:31:25.55\00:31:28.92 changes and the husband at some point may be able to come in 00:31:28.95\00:31:31.45 with her instead of having to talk outside. So you know the 00:31:31.49\00:31:37.03 conversation starts with health but it ends up with the Bible 00:31:37.06\00:31:40.33 and sharing Christ. 00:31:40.36\00:31:42.16 That's where it goes and a lot of times that's what happens. 00:31:42.20\00:31:46.60 But we go in there just to help people because we're walking in 00:31:46.63\00:31:49.77 a Muslim home, we're walking into Hindu homes and we're 00:31:49.80\00:31:52.97 getting into all these homes right? Because I've been over 00:31:53.01\00:31:56.01 there...Because when I go out I go into the villages. That's one 00:31:56.04\00:31:59.08 of the first things I do when I go into a new country is I go 00:31:59.11\00:32:01.85 out. I take a translator. I go into the villages. I talk to 00:32:01.88\00:32:04.92 people. I want to find out what our baseline is. And there's 00:32:04.95\00:32:09.39 many times I go talk to a Hindu and they don't want anything to 00:32:09.42\00:32:12.36 do with me. Nothing. We know you're a Christian. We don't 00:32:12.39\00:32:14.93 want you here. When I say I'm just here to help. I'm just here 00:32:14.96\00:32:19.33 to check on the health of your children, to check on the health 00:32:19.37\00:32:21.94 of your mother. Oh, come in. They'll let you in. And it is 00:32:21.97\00:32:25.37 the right arm of the ministry for a reason. Because it works. 00:32:25.41\00:32:29.71 It absolutely works. And like I said when we started we were 00:32:29.74\00:32:32.98 going to do an evangelism series but that was shut down. But what 00:32:33.01\00:32:35.62 is not shut down was the health work. Was just going out and 00:32:35.65\00:32:39.72 telling people I love you and I care about you and then letting 00:32:39.75\00:32:43.16 God work from there, and He does 00:32:43.19\00:32:46.73 Amen. So I know you said that you go into the villages. That's 00:32:46.76\00:32:49.63 one of the first things you do. How do you scout out, for lack 00:32:49.66\00:32:53.70 of a better word, how do you figure out what country to go to 00:32:53.74\00:32:58.64 in the first place? 00:32:58.67\00:33:00.54 Well, we are usually requested. So people have found out about 00:33:00.58\00:33:04.85 our program and so they will be requesting us to go into a 00:33:04.88\00:33:09.18 certain country. And so what we do, we've been so incredibly 00:33:09.22\00:33:11.79 blessed. As soon as we've gotten this request we will try to find 00:33:11.82\00:33:15.49 a medical professional in that country that will work as a 00:33:15.52\00:33:19.83 supervisor for us. And as soon as we find that supervisor, then 00:33:19.86\00:33:23.33 we're working with the Adventists...Because the 00:33:23.37\00:33:25.67 Adventist conference, they're the ones that are requesting 00:33:25.70\00:33:28.37 this. Then they're working with the supervisor to find the Bible 00:33:28.40\00:33:32.57 worker wives that qualify and want to be a part of our program 00:33:32.61\00:33:35.71 So it's a very structured process but it's all around the 00:33:35.74\00:33:39.85 Adventist church. Having an Adventist family around the 00:33:39.88\00:33:45.52 world gives you openings to do mission work and all kinds of 00:33:45.55\00:33:48.22 things. Just being part of this church is an amazing opportunity 00:33:48.26\00:33:53.23 to spread Jesus to the world. You couldn't do this on your own 00:33:53.26\00:33:56.40 It would be really, really tough 00:33:56.43\00:33:57.87 Mmm huh, that's a movement, that's a movement. Dr. Anderson 00:33:57.90\00:34:01.07 what type of diseases have you seen with the people? 00:34:01.10\00:34:04.57 Well everything you can imagine and a lot of diseases that we 00:34:04.61\00:34:08.08 don't see at all here in the US So something like elephantiasis 00:34:08.11\00:34:12.61 You know it's a parasite that causes massive swelling of the 00:34:12.65\00:34:16.82 leg. Things that I never saw in medical school, I never saw in 00:34:16.85\00:34:21.82 training. So many of those diseases that are...many of them 00:34:21.86\00:34:24.76 are also very easily preventable too and that's where our model 00:34:24.79\00:34:29.70 comes in in terms of teaching the basics, you know, hand 00:34:29.73\00:34:32.90 washing, clean water. Those kinds of things can be 00:34:32.93\00:34:36.64 life-changing. We take it for granted because we have you know 00:34:36.67\00:34:40.71 a system of clean water here in the US but Yep. 00:34:40.74\00:34:44.85 It was also very good and Dr. Anderson when we were at the 00:34:44.88\00:34:50.49 clinic in Shashimani, he noticed this guy crawling along the 00:34:50.52\00:34:54.16 ground, right? And he realized that maybe this man could be 00:34:54.19\00:34:57.99 helped with a set of crutches. And so, what happened, John? 00:34:58.03\00:35:01.16 Well the crazy thing, he's kind of walking along the ground like 00:35:01.20\00:35:04.60 a crab. You know he's got these two little hand things that are 00:35:04.63\00:35:08.17 about two inches high. They're just little handles to keep his 00:35:08.20\00:35:11.01 knuckles from being on the ground and he scoots around that 00:35:11.04\00:35:14.01 way. And so he climbed up in the chair and had some other 00:35:14.04\00:35:16.85 complaint. I don't know, he had an earache or something. So we 00:35:16.88\00:35:19.45 looked at that. But then I looked at his legs and he'd had 00:35:19.48\00:35:22.52 some either an infection or a tumor so his femur, his thigh 00:35:22.55\00:35:25.55 bone was very short on one side but I kind of checked him out. 00:35:25.59\00:35:28.32 I realized that his other leg was basically fine. And he 00:35:28.36\00:35:32.73 couldn't quite stand up straight all the way because his joints 00:35:32.76\00:35:35.40 had been bent for so long. But I thought you know this guy why 00:35:35.43\00:35:39.23 is he crawling around on the ground. He could benefit from 00:35:39.27\00:35:41.00 some crutches. So I asked Jim, Hey, let's get this guy some 00:35:41.04\00:35:45.64 crutches. He's like okay we'll get him some crutches. So he 00:35:45.67\00:35:47.58 asked around and lo and behold you can't get crutches there. 00:35:47.61\00:35:49.84 You can't just go to the store and buy crutches. They're very 00:35:49.88\00:35:51.91 hard to come by. I don't know why. It seems like that would be 00:35:51.95\00:35:55.35 a relatively straightforward thing to make. People do make 00:35:55.38\00:35:57.59 their own out of wood. So anyway the bottom line is, long story 00:35:57.62\00:36:01.06 short Jim gave the guy his crutches at the end of the trip 00:36:01.09\00:36:03.93 and that's life-changing for this guy. I mean, he can walk 00:36:03.96\00:36:07.40 upright now where he has been scooting around on the ground 00:36:07.43\00:36:09.56 So those are some of the things we saw that just, you would 00:36:09.60\00:36:12.63 never see here. 00:36:12.67\00:36:15.30 Absolutely. What are some of the challenges that you've faced 00:36:15.34\00:36:17.74 over there? 00:36:17.77\00:36:21.04 Well (laughter) so one of the challenges is it's never enough. 00:36:21.08\00:36:26.11 And you notice in the video I talked about walking away in 00:36:26.15\00:36:30.29 tears and that was a true statement. At one point, I lost 00:36:30.32\00:36:33.32 it because my job...I am not a medical person, right? So I'm 00:36:33.36\00:36:37.46 administrative and my job is organization. And so I was 00:36:37.49\00:36:41.40 organizing this program and trying to do crowd control and 00:36:41.43\00:36:44.97 by doing crowd control I made up these papers that we would hand 00:36:45.00\00:36:48.40 out so I would only have so many right? And we had groups in 00:36:48.44\00:36:52.14 front of the place where we were at. I mean just crowds early in 00:36:52.17\00:36:55.94 the morning. People that have walked three days to get there 00:36:55.98\00:36:59.25 because they knew this program was going on. And they're 00:36:59.28\00:37:01.68 sitting out there waiting for us and they're desperate and you 00:37:01.72\00:37:06.02 can tell they're broken and they're hurt and the babies are 00:37:06.05\00:37:08.82 crying and mothers are holding malnourished children and I mean 00:37:08.86\00:37:12.46 you just have all this going on and it was up to me to decide 00:37:12.49\00:37:18.37 who got in. And at one point I was just, I, I, couldn't take it 00:37:18.40\00:37:24.54 John had brought that one lady with the epileptic seizure. We 00:37:24.57\00:37:28.14 had another seven-year-old girl that was a type I diabetic, 00:37:28.18\00:37:31.95 couldn't get her insulin. We had two other little girls that, 00:37:31.98\00:37:35.98 young girls, they were in the same family, they were one year 00:37:36.02\00:37:39.62 apart and they couldn't walk. And nobody was able to figure 00:37:39.65\00:37:42.76 out why all of a sudden these girls couldn't walk. And all of 00:37:42.79\00:37:45.49 this came at once and then all these hundreds of people trying 00:37:45.53\00:37:49.20 to get in and it was too much for me. And I walked away for a 00:37:49.23\00:37:53.07 few minutes, I let it out, and then I came back and I got back 00:37:53.10\00:37:57.41 to work. And that's what you got to do sometimes. A lot of 00:37:57.44\00:38:01.64 the challenges that you can never do enough. But what you 00:38:01.68\00:38:05.45 can do, I mean, like John said for 30 bots you could get 00:38:05.48\00:38:09.58 somebody into a hospital over night. I think in Shashimani we 00:38:09.62\00:38:15.96 sent six people, critical patients to the hospital. I mean 00:38:15.99\00:38:18.66 if these people weren't going to the hospital they were probably 00:38:18.69\00:38:20.73 going to die. Six patients. And they went. They were treated. 00:38:20.76\00:38:24.97 They got medication. They got released. That cost us what, 00:38:25.00\00:38:28.14 $148 to save those six lives. And right now we set up to give 00:38:28.17\00:38:35.38 insulin to that one girl because she's like type I and so we have 00:38:35.41\00:38:39.71 it set up at the pharmacy there. It's $5 a month. 00:38:39.75\00:38:43.08 That's a blessing, that's a huge blessing. 00:38:43.12\00:38:46.09 It is incredible. I mean so the challenge is we want to do more 00:38:46.12\00:38:50.99 but we only have so much. We only have so much money. There's 00:38:51.03\00:38:55.60 only so much manpower, so much time. 00:38:55.63\00:39:01.17 From a larger perspective you know we talk about the 00:39:01.20\00:39:04.04 challenges on this trip but the fact is we can only be there for 00:39:04.07\00:39:06.57 two or three weeks at a time. So you know we talked about 00:39:06.61\00:39:09.41 clean water. I mean, that's a huge problem in many countries 00:39:09.44\00:39:12.18 in the world and it's a huge cause of disease so you know 00:39:12.21\00:39:16.05 we have...There are different methods of dealing with that 00:39:16.08\00:39:17.42 A lot of organizations are drilling wells. In Ethiopia for 00:39:17.45\00:39:20.76 example there was not a stable water supply so you would see 00:39:20.79\00:39:24.23 these donkey carts going down the road with big plastic jugs. 00:39:24.26\00:39:27.20 I thought it was maybe gasoline. Well turns out it was water 00:39:27.23\00:39:29.40 because water would be available in one place one day and a 00:39:29.43\00:39:32.50 couple days later in another place. So they would fill up a 00:39:32.53\00:39:34.70 bunch of jugs, try to transport it around. So we have to address 00:39:34.74\00:39:40.44 the clean water problem we have a device called a ModiDrop. It's 00:39:40.48\00:39:43.14 a and I won't get into the details but the bottom line is 00:39:43.18\00:39:44.91 for a few dollars you can provide a family with clean 00:39:44.95\00:39:48.35 water for a year. So those are some of the things that we can 00:39:48.38\00:39:51.15 do that have a huge impact that don't require you know American 00:39:51.19\00:39:56.36 boots on the ground so to speak. 00:39:56.39\00:39:57.73 And you said it's a ModiDrop? What is that? 00:39:57.76\00:40:01.63 It's a two-ounce ceramic tablet and it was the University of 00:40:01.66\00:40:06.17 Virginia developed this and so we work with the University of 00:40:06.20\00:40:10.17 Virginia and we take thousands of these to the mission field. 00:40:10.21\00:40:12.27 Matter of fact in 2018 we were the mission project for the 00:40:12.31\00:40:16.75 North American Division for VBS. And for everybody out there that 00:40:16.78\00:40:20.85 helped raise money I tell you we were able to help thousands 00:40:20.88\00:40:24.39 of people because you raised that money through VBS program. 00:40:24.42\00:40:28.02 It's diffused with silver ions so you drop it in a 10 or 20 00:40:28.06\00:40:32.56 liter jug of water and then overnight it purifies the water. 00:40:32.59\00:40:37.00 And you just repeat that for a year. 00:40:37.03\00:40:38.77 Yeah so one tablet will keep a family of five in clean water 00:40:38.80\00:40:41.34 for a year. And a tablet...I buy them by the thousands. So they 00:40:41.37\00:40:45.31 cost me around $8-$10 per tablet depending on what the silver 00:40:45.34\00:40:48.38 market is doing at the time. 00:40:48.41\00:40:49.98 Wow! That's incredible. How has being a part of this 00:40:50.01\00:40:54.38 organization strengthened your faith and this question goes to 00:40:54.42\00:40:57.19 both of you guys. Dr. Anderson let's start with you. 00:40:57.22\00:41:00.02 Well, so many different ways. The main thing is it gives you 00:41:00.06\00:41:05.69 perspective on what's going on in other parts of the world and 00:41:05.73\00:41:09.33 when you see...One thing that was incredible and we saw it as 00:41:09.36\00:41:13.44 soon as we arrived. They had this gigantic parade, a huge 00:41:13.47\00:41:16.60 welcome for us. They have this...We could tell stories of 00:41:16.64\00:41:21.51 faith of the locals of building their church and getting ready 00:41:21.54\00:41:24.31 for the meetings. They prepared for these meetings for three 00:41:24.35\00:41:26.85 months, just praying and fasting The faith of many of these 00:41:26.88\00:41:32.62 people is just so inspiring. That's one thing that really 00:41:32.65\00:41:36.12 hits me every time I go in addition to the physical needs 00:41:36.16\00:41:39.66 and the social problems. 00:41:39.69\00:41:41.03 Yeah absolutely. 00:41:41.06\00:41:42.90 And every time you take one of these trips, like I said before 00:41:42.93\00:41:45.80 in the video, I mean, they had a civil war. We couldn't go the 00:41:45.83\00:41:50.24 time before because of the war. Every time you take these trips 00:41:50.27\00:41:53.44 you put yourself in the hands of God and you plan. I mean you 00:41:53.48\00:41:57.15 plan all these things to happen and they've got to happen right 00:41:57.18\00:42:00.12 in a row and if you know anything about the mission field 00:42:00.15\00:42:02.75 it's crazy; things don't happen as planned. But every single 00:42:02.78\00:42:07.22 time you make these plans, you put this in the hands of God and 00:42:07.26\00:42:10.73 you watch God take your plans and multiply them like loaves 00:42:10.76\00:42:15.30 and fishes. I mean just doing things. And so your faith is 00:42:15.33\00:42:18.80 growing as you're watching what God is doing. You're watching 00:42:18.83\00:42:22.54 1700 baptisms. You know that was so amazing. And you're watching 00:42:22.57\00:42:27.21 these things happen one right after the other. I tell you, I 00:42:27.24\00:42:30.08 couldn't travel during COVID and it was so disappointing and I 00:42:30.11\00:42:35.08 just felt myself becoming desensitized, being in this 00:42:35.12\00:42:37.59 American bubble, you know. We think everything's always like 00:42:37.62\00:42:40.59 this, but it's not. You go out into the rest of the world and 00:42:40.62\00:42:44.16 it's so different and there are so much need. And you get to 00:42:44.19\00:42:48.76 watch God works and that's what it does for my faith is 00:42:48.80\00:42:53.30 watching...I didn't do that, God did that. I didn't figure that 00:42:53.34\00:42:56.40 out. God figured that out. And you watch it over and over and 00:42:56.44\00:43:01.48 over again. And I tell you what, I don't know if I would be able 00:43:01.51\00:43:05.25 to be a Christian if I did not do mission work of some kind. 00:43:05.28\00:43:09.42 Whether here at home or around the world. I've got to be able 00:43:09.45\00:43:12.45 to see God work. And I can see Him every time I go out. 00:43:12.49\00:43:16.26 I think he has a preacher in you (laughter) I think yeah 00:43:16.29\00:43:22.10 absolutely, absolutely. Now that's incredible. I think about 00:43:22.13\00:43:24.67 the illustration that you gave or the story that you told 00:43:24.70\00:43:27.17 earlier where you were talking about how the women brought the 00:43:27.20\00:43:30.34 babies and they weren't supposed to bring the babies but it ended 00:43:30.37\00:43:32.64 up working out. And so that is absolutely incredible. What 00:43:32.67\00:43:37.05 would you say needs to be someone's qualification or 00:43:37.08\00:43:41.28 something along those lines to get involved with this mission 00:43:41.32\00:43:46.22 work? 00:43:46.25\00:43:47.59 Only one. They need to be interested in serving the Lord. 00:43:47.62\00:43:49.42 And that's really it. We have a lot of...You know we obviously 00:43:49.46\00:43:52.56 can use people that have medical training but we need IT people 00:43:52.59\00:43:56.46 One thing that happened with COVID is we could not travel 00:43:56.50\00:43:59.37 to do the teaching in person so we developed an online 00:43:59.40\00:44:02.10 curriculum and some videos and some PowerPoints to do the 00:44:02.14\00:44:05.34 teaching and that's how we... Ethiopia's the first program we 00:44:05.37\00:44:07.88 started without actually going to visit. So we hired a local 00:44:07.91\00:44:11.78 supervisor and we were able to do the teaching basically 00:44:11.81\00:44:14.98 remotely. So we need those kinds of people. We need people to 00:44:15.02\00:44:17.39 review all the reports that come in, do administrative work. 00:44:17.42\00:44:23.26 Yeah, yeah. There's no shortage of work. 00:44:23.29\00:44:25.26 No there's no shortage and of course doctors and nurses are 00:44:25.29\00:44:30.33 you know, women doctors, women nurses and men of course too but 00:44:30.37\00:44:34.14 women teaching women. There's something very powerful with 00:44:34.17\00:44:36.91 that and so it's...Because we take trips. We're going to be 00:44:36.94\00:44:40.68 taking a trip to India. We're going to be going to the 00:44:40.71\00:44:43.65 Philippines next year. And we'll go back to Ethiopia I'm pretty 00:44:43.68\00:44:47.58 sure so. Oh, and then we're probably going to Nepal. So 00:44:47.62\00:44:51.79 we've got trips set up. We've got a lot of work out there and 00:44:51.82\00:44:57.69 you know the only thing that keeps us from going even further 00:44:57.73\00:45:01.73 even faster is resources, that's it. I mean, we've got the 00:45:01.76\00:45:06.23 foundation laid, God has given us the ideas. This is such a 00:45:06.27\00:45:09.80 simple program. I mean you teach women that live on the ground in 00:45:09.84\00:45:15.54 the countries to do medical missionary work, to do public 00:45:15.58\00:45:19.48 health work, to train to do very simple things. And then we are 00:45:19.51\00:45:23.39 even talking about expanding that into an online class and 00:45:23.42\00:45:28.66 maybe John you can tell them a little bit about our thoughts on 00:45:28.69\00:45:31.26 that. 00:45:31.29\00:45:32.63 Well yeah that was actually one of the blessings of COVID is 00:45:32.66\00:45:34.90 kind of developing this remote program. So we can scale things 00:45:34.93\00:45:37.63 out much faster now rather than depend on a group of people 00:45:37.67\00:45:39.87 traveling and doing the teaching in person. But we'd like to 00:45:39.90\00:45:43.41 develop a curriculum that is you know accredited in some way 00:45:43.44\00:45:48.14 and that allows those who pass through it to get some kind 00:45:48.18\00:45:51.45 of a certificate that shows that they have had this type of 00:45:51.48\00:45:55.62 training and that can be valuable in their local 00:45:55.65\00:45:57.35 community but also is just beneficial in terms of the 00:45:57.39\00:46:03.09 education that's provided. 00:46:03.12\00:46:04.46 Absolutely. And the thing that I love about this is that you guys 00:46:04.49\00:46:08.13 are going in and you're equipping the local people so 00:46:08.16\00:46:14.70 you know because they'll be there. They'll remain there and 00:46:14.74\00:46:17.67 they're teaching and leading people to Christ and helping 00:46:17.71\00:46:20.81 people. I mean that's huge, that's huge. 00:46:20.84\00:46:23.31 And like what John said, it raises the ladies' status when 00:46:23.35\00:46:27.25 their doing this. And I've asked them because I'll sit down... 00:46:27.28\00:46:29.72 Well I'll eat with them and I'll talk to them and I ask them what 00:46:29.75\00:46:33.15 do people think of you now that you're a health worker? And 00:46:33.19\00:46:37.29 their faces just light up, they just light up. Their status in 00:46:37.33\00:46:41.50 the community has grown and women in some of these 00:46:41.53\00:46:45.40 communities are second class citizens, right? But when they 00:46:45.43\00:46:48.64 get a job, when they're bringing in an income and when they're 00:46:48.67\00:46:51.61 helping their community and bringing people to Jesus I mean 00:46:51.64\00:46:56.41 it's life-changing for everybody that's involved in it. This is, 00:46:56.44\00:47:00.82 this is God's idea. We didn't come up...we are not smart 00:47:00.85\00:47:04.65 enough to come up with this idea we just are not. And God put 00:47:04.69\00:47:08.96 this out there and He's carrying it further and it's amazing to 00:47:08.99\00:47:13.09 be a part of it and be along for the ride. 00:47:13.13\00:47:15.70 Amen there's so many moving parts. 00:47:15.73\00:47:17.07 For sure. We are developing a program for mental health. 00:47:17.10\00:47:22.44 That's important, yes, yes. 00:47:22.47\00:47:26.11 So yeah, 38 percent of all women that will commit suicide today 00:47:26.14\00:47:30.35 will be in India between the ages of 15 and 35. And so 00:47:30.38\00:47:36.15 there's a lot of depression, there's a lot of anxiety in 00:47:36.18\00:47:38.85 there's countries and so we have a pastor that's with the Oregon 00:47:38.89\00:47:43.86 Conference that also has a PhD in psychology no, yes psychology 00:47:43.89\00:47:51.53 yes Ph.D. in psychology, he's developing this program for us. 00:47:51.57\00:47:55.24 And so I'm very excited about this. Because this will be a big 00:47:55.27\00:48:00.48 part of our training this mental health. And I mean the women are 00:48:00.51\00:48:03.24 already there, they're already visiting, they're already 00:48:03.28\00:48:05.28 comforting people. Now if they can have some listening tools 00:48:05.31\00:48:08.32 Now if they can have some cognitive behavioral tools, I 00:48:08.35\00:48:11.42 mean how much more effective can these people are. We've got a 00:48:11.45\00:48:17.16 lot of plans. We'll just see where God takes us. 00:48:17.19\00:48:19.09 Amen, and I love the literacy component too as well because 00:48:19.13\00:48:24.20 if you can't read how can you read the Bible? You know how can 00:48:24.23\00:48:28.40 you learn about Jesus and study for yourself because you can't 00:48:28.44\00:48:31.57 trust everything that people are saying. You need to be in the 00:48:31.61\00:48:34.61 word for yourself. You know we have a program called 3ABN Today 00:48:34.64\00:48:38.71 Bible Q and A and some of the questions that come in some 00:48:38.75\00:48:42.88 people say that they heard somebody say. But you have 00:48:42.92\00:48:46.86 to study for yourself. You want to make sure that you're in the 00:48:46.89\00:48:49.92 word so you guys teaching literacy is absolutely huge. 00:48:49.96\00:48:54.20 What are some of the needs of your organization? 00:48:54.23\00:48:57.57 Hmm. Well the biggest thing is resources as Jim mentioned 00:48:57.60\00:49:03.71 because we can scale these programs up but you know we need 00:49:03.74\00:49:09.51 help too in some of these different areas, health workers 00:49:09.54\00:49:12.45 and logistics, administrative tasks as well. 00:49:12.48\00:49:17.49 And finances because it's a lot of money to put this together 00:49:17.52\00:49:21.92 I would imagine. 00:49:21.96\00:49:23.29 It is but it's amazingly not as much money as you would think. 00:49:23.32\00:49:27.06 I mean, and that's what we talk about going into orthopedic 00:49:27.10\00:49:30.20 surgery and how much money that costs. You're dragging all kinds 00:49:30.23\00:49:33.23 of equipment with you and everything else where you know 00:49:33.27\00:49:35.94 it's amazingly cheap when you can send somebody to the 00:49:35.97\00:49:40.94 hospital for $25 and save their life. So I mean yes you need a 00:49:40.98\00:49:46.82 lot of funds to do more but a little bit goes a long, long 00:49:46.85\00:49:50.99 ways. So even like $5 donations We don't have anybody that 00:49:51.02\00:49:55.42 wants to become part of the Ultimate Mission family and be 00:49:55.46\00:49:58.79 part of what we do. We are just very happy whatever level that 00:49:58.83\00:50:03.60 is. Absolutely, absolutely. Yeah I'm 00:50:03.63\00:50:06.77 excited about this like just hearing our testimonies, seeing 00:50:06.80\00:50:10.81 your excitement for the mission work and watching that video 00:50:10.84\00:50:14.98 that we saw earlier and just knowing how the people are being 00:50:15.01\00:50:18.58 helped, it's inspiring. And I hope that people at home will be 00:50:18.61\00:50:22.75 inspired to go into the mission field and join hands with you 00:50:22.78\00:50:26.59 in doing this wonderful work. I know that you listed some of the 00:50:26.62\00:50:30.93 places that you plan to go, some of the countries. Where are some 00:50:30.96\00:50:35.46 other places that you would like to go in the future. 00:50:35.50\00:50:40.00 (Deep breath) I'd love to go all over the world. 00:50:40.04\00:50:42.50 You know Afghanistan has been one of the places that I'd like 00:50:42.54\00:50:47.84 to go. Really where our program works best is where the infant 00:50:47.88\00:50:52.45 mortality rate is the highest. Because when babies are dying 00:50:52.48\00:50:57.29 something very simple isn't being done, right? Babies are 00:50:57.32\00:51:00.29 very hardy and so places with high infant mortality rates are 00:51:00.32\00:51:03.99 really what I'd be looking to and countries that aren't 00:51:04.03\00:51:07.76 Christian countries that have other influences that need to 00:51:07.80\00:51:12.07 know Jesus. I want to go into unreached places, places where 00:51:12.10\00:51:15.64 people don't know Jesus and places where this health work... 00:51:15.67\00:51:18.74 You know, most places don't know Jesus, bit problem with health. 00:51:18.77\00:51:23.78 And so there's a reason that we have been instructed to do 00:51:23.81\00:51:31.75 medical missionary work is because it works and because 00:51:31.79\00:51:35.89 it's needed. 00:51:35.92\00:51:37.26 Amen, amen, I love it, I love it And we're going to talk a little 00:51:37.29\00:51:39.83 more in just a second. We'll come back for some final 00:51:39.86\00:51:43.16 thoughts. We're going to take a brief break. Let you know how 00:51:43.20\00:51:45.60 you can get in touch with Ultimate Mission.
