My name is 00:01:07.00\00:01:09.73 James Rafferty and I am here with my lovely wife Rise 00:01:09.76\00:01:13.67 (ReeSee) Rafferty. Thirty-three years now. Praise the Lord. 00:01:13.70\00:01:19.91 We're so glad you've joined us today. We have a great program 00:01:19.94\00:01:22.51 If you are into learning how to relax, learning how to destress 00:01:22.54\00:01:27.62 learn about health, massage, get a little bit of education on the 00:01:27.65\00:01:32.19 side and kind of get into a retreat that kind of out and 00:01:32.22\00:01:34.69 away from the city a little bit, you have come to the right place 00:01:34.72\00:01:38.03 at the right time because we have a table full of guests that 00:01:38.06\00:01:41.50 are going to tell you just how you can do that and just where 00:01:41.53\00:01:44.20 you can do that. So to my immediate right, to our 00:01:44.23\00:01:48.40 immediate right is Melody. Melody, glad you're here. 00:01:48.44\00:01:50.34 Tell us a little bit about yourself and where you are 00:01:50.37\00:01:53.07 (Melody Caviness) coming from and what you're here for. 00:01:53.11\00:01:55.11 Well I just came from the Black Hills in South Dakota, I say 00:01:55.14\00:02:03.18 South DakoTa and I moved from Ohio to South Dakota. And I was 00:02:03.22\00:02:07.52 kind of commissioned to come there to go to work as the 00:02:07.56\00:02:11.86 general manager. And so I do whatever I'm asked to do. 00:02:11.89\00:02:16.67 Okay that's what general manager's all about. (Multiple 00:02:16.70\00:02:21.57 voices and laughter) 00:02:21.60\00:02:25.51 We know you as the chef as the cook here at camp meeting when 00:02:25.54\00:02:28.54 we have camp meeting here. So you probably do a little bit of 00:02:28.58\00:02:31.88 that there too. 00:02:31.91\00:02:33.25 Just a little bit. 00:02:33.28\00:02:34.85 Yeah. Praise the Lord. And to your immediate right is Mark 00:02:34.88\00:02:38.05 Anthony. Mark tell us about yourself and what you're doing 00:02:38.09\00:02:40.69 here and your relationship to Black Hills. 00:02:40.72\00:02:42.19 Okay well I'm the president over at Black Hills Health and 00:02:42.22\00:02:44.93 Education Center and of course if people have watched us on 00:02:44.96\00:02:48.33 3ABN and things like that you've seen Mark and Melody on 3ABN 00:02:48.36\00:02:53.54 many, many times over the years doing cooking programs and 00:02:53.57\00:02:56.60 things like that. And of course I had to drag her over to Black 00:02:56.64\00:02:59.67 Hills kicking and screaming but I got her. Now that I know she's 00:02:59.71\00:03:03.48 willing to do anything, we're good to go. We're definitely 00:03:03.51\00:03:07.05 good to go. 00:03:07.08\00:03:08.42 They can cut that part out. 00:03:08.45\00:03:09.78 So you're president of Black... Okay, all right, Praise the Lord 00:03:09.82\00:03:15.86 Now to your immediate right is a couple, Brenda and Al, and you 00:03:15.89\00:03:20.10 are here also from Black Hills. Tell us a little bit about your 00:03:20.13\00:03:22.73 association with Black Hills and what you do. 00:03:22.76\00:03:24.47 Well this is my beautiful wife Brenda (Al and Brenda Trace) and 00:03:24.50\00:03:29.77 we've been at Black Hills now for seven years and our main 00:03:29.80\00:03:32.57 project there has been running the massage school. We are the 00:03:32.61\00:03:35.91 only Adventist massage school we know of anywhere. So we've 00:03:35.94\00:03:40.12 really been blessed with the students that we get. 00:03:40.15\00:03:42.48 So you're doing a school there at Black Hills, massage school 00:03:42.52\00:03:45.09 there at Black Hills. (Yes) Okay great. 00:03:45.12\00:03:47.56 We now do it. So COVID was a challenge for a lot of people 00:03:47.59\00:03:51.53 but for us, it was a real blessing because the school was 00:03:51.56\00:03:55.63 full-time coming to the six months but when COVID came we 00:03:55.66\00:04:01.20 weren't sure what to do. We didn't know if people were ever 00:04:01.24\00:04:03.54 going to be allowed to massage or what interaction was going to 00:04:03.57\00:04:07.94 be. So we put all of our non hands-on classes online via Zoom 00:04:07.98\00:04:12.68 They're live classes that you have to attend. But that allows 00:04:12.71\00:04:15.55 people to work there in the evenings so people can work and 00:04:15.58\00:04:18.79 still go to school and then they only come to Black Hills for 11 00:04:18.82\00:04:22.89 weeks which is sort of interesting because in the 00:04:22.92\00:04:26.19 beginning they think it's a real trial to leave home and then 00:04:26.23\00:04:28.53 after they've been there for two or three weeks they want to know 00:04:28.56\00:04:31.93 how they can stay permanently. I'm like no, no, no you're only 00:04:31.97\00:04:34.34 here for 11 weeks. We're pushing you out of the door when you're 00:04:34.37\00:04:36.50 done. But it has allowed the school to draw older students 00:04:36.54\00:04:43.04 who wouldn't necessarily want to leave home for six months and in 00:04:43.08\00:04:46.35 this last class we had both a retired OT (Occupational 00:04:46.38\00:04:50.55 therapist) and a PT (Physical Therapist) who wanted to switch 00:04:50.59\00:04:54.26 careers so both of them were a little bit older. So we have a 00:04:54.29\00:04:58.69 variety of students. So we're pretty excited about that. 00:04:58.73\00:05:01.56 Plus it makes it substantially less expensive to not have them 00:05:01.60\00:05:06.90 on-site all this time. 00:05:06.94\00:05:08.27 Okay less expensive for them so it's more affordable. 00:05:08.30\00:05:11.07 Yeah it's far more affordable than other places that do 00:05:11.11\00:05:14.14 massage therapy schools. (Okay) 00:05:14.18\00:05:15.51 One of the interesting things, the two students that Brenda was 00:05:15.54\00:05:19.35 talking about. Some people say I am too old to be a massage 00:05:19.38\00:05:23.49 therapist. This one student was 78 years old. 00:05:23.52\00:05:28.32 Incredible. 00:05:28.36\00:05:29.69 Yeah she had her 78th birthday while she was on campus so... 00:05:29.72\00:05:31.36 How did she get into massage therapy? 00:05:31.39\00:05:35.73 We can sign you up today if you'd like. 00:05:35.76\00:05:39.40 You're kind of laughing about that but at ASI we ran into an 00:05:39.43\00:05:44.17 individual that Al knew when he was a student, when that guy was 00:05:44.21\00:05:48.31 a student at PUC (Pacific Union College) and I was director of 00:05:48.34\00:05:49.68 enrollment there. And I just happened to mention something 00:05:49.71\00:05:52.75 about the massage program and he went Hold on a second. You guys 00:05:52.78\00:05:56.95 run a massage school? And he has a wife who has RA which is 00:05:56.99\00:06:01.19 rheumatoid arthritis. They travel a lot and massage really, 00:06:01.22\00:06:05.79 really helps her so he is always looking for a massage therapist 00:06:05.83\00:06:09.36 for her. And he said you know God kind of put it on my heart 00:06:09.40\00:06:12.63 to maybe I should learn massage therapy so that I could help her 00:06:12.67\00:06:16.74 and he was so excited. So we're kind of expecting him to come 00:06:16.77\00:06:21.04 just for the hands-on part because he doesn't want to get a 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.35 license, he doesn't want to be a professional; he just wants to 00:06:23.38\00:06:25.25 learn massage. So he's going to come this summer, actually, it's 00:06:25.28\00:06:30.69 this winter, for the massage program and the hands-on part 00:06:30.72\00:06:34.49 and learn so that as he's traveling with his wife he can 00:06:34.52\00:06:37.29 give her that relief that she needs. I think that is really an 00:06:37.33\00:06:40.60 amazing gift. 00:06:40.63\00:06:43.33 Okay I know we can keep going here. For our viewers, I'm just 00:06:43.37\00:06:45.90 going to take a little bit of an aside here. I just want to 00:06:45.93\00:06:48.47 emphasize. Did you hear that? This is really amazing. There 00:06:48.50\00:06:53.78 are couples who can help each other if you've got rheumatoid 00:06:53.81\00:06:57.11 arthritis, if you've got a need in that area here's a husband 00:06:57.15\00:07:00.85 that's going to help his wife by taking this massage classes 00:07:00.88\00:07:04.65 so that he can alleviate some the pains. 00:07:04.69\00:07:09.22 (Rese) I'm feeling (multiple voices and laughter) 00:07:09.26\00:07:11.49 We are going to...just to take a little aside here, we've got 00:07:11.53\00:07:13.80 an amazing musician. He used to be a member of the church that I 00:07:13.83\00:07:19.00 pastored for a while, Jonathan Kasabasic and he's going to 00:07:19.03\00:07:23.47 bring us a song Were It Not For Grace, a beautiful song, and 00:07:23.51\00:07:27.78 then we are going to be right back so don't go away. 00:07:27.81\00:07:30.88 ¤ ¤ 00:07:34.78\00:07:51.20 ¤ Time measured out my days Life carried me along ¤ 00:07:51.23\00:08:00.88 ¤ In my soul I yearned to follow God ¤ 00:08:00.91\00:08:11.45 ¤ But I knew I'd never be so strong ¤ 00:08:11.49\00:08:17.76 ¤ I looked hard at this world ¤ 00:08:17.79\00:08:20.80 ¤ To learn how heaven could be gained ¤ 00:08:20.83\00:08:27.77 ¤ Just to end where I began ¤ 00:08:27.80\00:08:34.31 ¤ Where human effort is all in vain ¤ 00:08:34.34\00:08:42.78 ¤ Were it not for grace I can tell you where I'd be ¤ 00:08:42.82\00:08:57.40 ¤ Wandering down some pointless road to nowhere ¤ 00:08:57.43\00:09:04.77 ¤ My salvation up to me ¤ 00:09:04.81\00:09:09.64 ¤ I know how that would go know the battles I would face ¤ 00:09:09.68\00:09:21.86 ¤ Forever running but losing the race ¤ 00:09:21.89\00:09:31.00 ¤ Were it not for grace ¤ 00:09:31.03\00:09:37.17 ¤ ¤ 00:09:37.21\00:09:41.24 ¤ So here is all my praise Expressed with all my heart ¤ 00:09:41.28\00:09:55.22 ¤ Offered to the one who took my place ¤ 00:09:55.26\00:10:02.66 ¤ And ran a course I could not start ¤ 00:10:02.70\00:10:07.54 ¤ And when He saw in full ¤ 00:10:07.57\00:10:12.47 ¤ Just how much His love would cost ¤ 00:10:12.51\00:10:20.22 ¤ He still went the final mile between me and heaven ¤ 00:10:20.25\00:10:28.82 ¤ So I would not be lost ¤ 00:10:28.86\00:10:35.40 ¤ Were it not for grace I can tell you where I'd be ¤ 00:10:35.43\00:10:48.31 ¤ Wandering down some pointless road to nowhere ¤ 00:10:48.34\00:10:55.58 ¤ With my salvation up to me ¤ 00:10:55.62\00:11:01.62 ¤ But I know how that would go All the battles I would face ¤ 00:11:01.66\00:11:14.30 ¤ Forever running but losing the race ¤ 00:11:14.34\00:11:22.44 ¤ Were it not for grace ¤ 00:11:22.48\00:11:29.28 ¤ Forever running but losing the race ¤ 00:11:29.32\00:11:37.13 ¤ Were it not for grace ¤ 00:11:37.16\00:11:47.37 ¤ ¤ 00:11:47.40\00:11:56.31 Praise God. If you'd like Jonathan to come and share at 00:12:04.15\00:12:07.26 your church you need to get ahold of 3ABN and get ahold of 00:12:07.29\00:12:09.66 him because I think he needs to be touching hearts with that 00:12:09.69\00:12:13.09 powerful, powerful gift. (I agree) Well we want to attend to 00:12:13.13\00:12:16.33 our program but before we do that we want to be sure and ask 00:12:16.36\00:12:19.43 the Holy Spirit to be here. Father we just thank you for this time 00:12:21.64\00:12:24.47 where we can meet with brothers and sisters in Christ and learn 00:12:24.51\00:12:28.84 from them. We pray that you bless their ministry and as they 00:12:28.88\00:12:32.58 share the work that you've put in their hands, the talents that 00:12:32.61\00:12:36.02 you've given them Father, that you would bless them and 00:12:36.05\00:12:38.35 increase them and that the viewers would be drawn in some 00:12:38.39\00:12:42.29 way to a closer understanding of your will for their lives. We 00:12:42.32\00:12:45.43 ask for your presence here now in Jesus' name amen. 00:12:45.46\00:12:48.83 Amen, amen. You know I've heard about Black Hills over the years 00:12:48.86\00:12:53.00 and I've been around Adventists now for almost 40 years about 00:12:53.03\00:12:57.91 38 years. But I don't know the history of Black Hills like you 00:12:57.94\00:13:02.34 know when did it start, who started it, you know. Can you 00:13:02.38\00:13:05.75 guys share, Al and Brenda, can you...You've been there seven 00:13:05.78\00:13:08.25 years right, so you probably... 00:13:08.28\00:13:09.92 Yeah we've been there a long time. (Oh yeah) We actually went 00:13:09.95\00:13:13.76 there for two months. 00:13:13.79\00:13:15.52 Oh, you did? That's what the original plan was? 00:13:15.56\00:13:17.53 Yeah, that was the original plan. 00:13:17.56\00:13:18.89 You went there for 60 days and it turned into seven years? 00:13:18.93\00:13:20.96 Yes, because who wants to go to South Dakota. And I said oh two 00:13:21.00\00:13:23.16 months, it's not a big deal in the summer, well in the fall. 00:13:23.20\00:13:26.80 Yeah, no big deal. 00:13:26.84\00:13:28.17 Beautiful in the fall. 00:13:28.20\00:13:29.54 But then we felt that God really put it on our hearts to move 00:13:29.57\00:13:31.71 there so...Black Hills was started in 1980. Yeah. 00:13:31.74\00:13:36.31 Forty-three years now. 00:13:36.34\00:13:38.01 Three different couples got together and one of the couples, 00:13:38.05\00:13:43.05 well actually I think they were all from North Dakota and they 00:13:43.08\00:13:48.99 ...Willard and Elinore Worth sold a farm and everything that 00:13:49.02\00:13:51.79 they had in North Dakota and they actually went to Weimar for 00:13:51.83\00:13:55.70 one year. Willard had a masters in education and he wanted to 00:13:55.73\00:14:00.57 start a school. So he went to Weimar for one year and ran the 00:14:00.60\00:14:04.81 school out there and then they started asking around for 00:14:04.84\00:14:08.84 property. And they called the realtor and they said you know 00:14:08.88\00:14:12.11 we'd like something with a creek and a canyon and the realtor 00:14:12.15\00:14:14.62 went ha, ha, ha so does everybody. So but then I don't 00:14:14.65\00:14:20.39 know a few months later he called them back and he said I 00:14:20.42\00:14:22.66 have this piece of property that you might be interested in and 00:14:22.69\00:14:26.80 do you remember what the original... 00:14:26.83\00:14:28.16 I think it was around 500 acres initially. (Okay) 00:14:28.20\00:14:31.53 So it does have a beautiful creek that runs through the 00:14:31.57\00:14:34.47 middle of the property. It is in a canyon and it's gorgeous and 00:14:34.50\00:14:39.91 it was a retreat. It was built as a, I think, kind of a hunting 00:14:39.94\00:14:43.75 lodge kind of thing that had one small building on it and they 00:14:43.78\00:14:47.32 came in and over the years it has expanded and different 00:14:47.35\00:14:50.62 buildings have been built and we just think it's one of the 00:14:50.65\00:14:53.86 prettiest places, you know. Anyway but at night you can 00:14:53.89\00:14:58.39 listen to the coyotes howl. I'll never forget the one night I 00:14:58.43\00:15:01.30 said to Al what is that screaming? And I said you know 00:15:01.33\00:15:05.73 what I think that's a mountain lion. And he said no it's not a 00:15:05.77\00:15:09.07 mountain lion. Here I'll show you and he goes on YouTube and 00:15:09.10\00:15:12.11 he looks up what a mountain lion sounds like and I was like yeah 00:15:12.14\00:15:14.81 right, so we had like stereo. We had it on YouTube and then we 00:15:14.84\00:15:17.55 could hear it outside (laughter) and we'd hear it outside. 00:15:17.58\00:15:21.55 And sometimes you'll see the footprints right by the front 00:15:21.58\00:15:25.89 door, so it's kind of a wild and crazy...We had one student who 00:15:25.92\00:15:31.63 came one time from Southern California and we couldn't get 00:15:31.66\00:15:34.23 to her. She was in one of what we call a pod which is kind of 00:15:34.26\00:15:37.17 like a condo. You have an individual bedroom within the 00:15:37.20\00:15:39.97 apartment. She had locked every door that she could get between 00:15:40.00\00:15:42.97 her and the outside. And I was like what? And she goes well 00:15:43.00\00:15:47.08 this is the country you don't know what could hurt you out 00:15:47.11\00:15:49.58 here. And I thought you live in Southern Cal and you're scared 00:15:49.61\00:15:52.78 here? So it's just been, I think it's been a place that's been a 00:15:52.81\00:15:57.59 blessing to a lot of people. Willard and I are the only 00:15:57.62\00:16:00.92 living couple left of the original founders, but they do 00:16:00.96\00:16:04.66 live near the center and it's just, it's phenomenal. 00:16:04.69\00:16:10.43 You got to be pretty happy about what's going on now. Seems like 00:16:10.47\00:16:13.64 you guys pretty exuberant and happy, I mean excited about some 00:16:13.67\00:16:19.44 of the new things that you're doing and some of the things 00:16:19.47\00:16:21.61 you continued. So what do you do a lifestyle, I mean at the 00:16:21.64\00:16:25.01 Black Hills Lifestyle Center. What do you treat? 00:16:25.05\00:16:27.92 Well we decided to do things different than most people do 00:16:27.95\00:16:31.82 things. I know I've been and Melody's been to a different 00:16:31.85\00:16:34.69 lifestyle centers all over the country and I've done events 00:16:34.72\00:16:37.23 at different 00:16:37.26\00:16:38.59 centers and coming into Black Hills we just said how can we do 00:16:38.63\00:16:42.93 things better, how can we do things different, how can we do 00:16:42.96\00:16:46.07 things original. And so we've really changed the dynamics of 00:16:46.10\00:16:50.17 it. Everything from the wellness center for example. A lot of 00:16:50.21\00:16:56.04 places do it like a one size fits all, but what we've done 00:16:56.08\00:16:58.25 is we've hybridized the system and we have a number of 00:16:58.28\00:17:01.68 different doctors that we can refer to around the country. So 00:17:01.72\00:17:05.25 depending on the people's problems, you know some people 00:17:05.29\00:17:08.92 have...we're probably one of the only places that specialize in 00:17:08.96\00:17:12.26 autoimmune diseases right now. So if there's a particular 00:17:12.29\00:17:16.56 autoimmune disease that you have we've got particular specialists 00:17:16.60\00:17:19.17 that we can refer to, zoom with, and get the right counseling so 00:17:19.20\00:17:22.97 we know exactly what diet and what treatments to put you on. 00:17:23.00\00:17:25.91 So it's a whole different kind of a system and what it does it 00:17:25.94\00:17:29.68 makes us better able to treat people and we can actually reach 00:17:29.71\00:17:34.02 more people with that. So that's one of the thing that we do with 00:17:34.05\00:17:37.49 the wellness center. The wellness center we can treat 00:17:37.52\00:17:39.75 everything from diabetes to high blood pressure, certain cancer 00:17:39.79\00:17:43.29 protocols, you know, pretty much everything that we can do there. 00:17:43.32\00:17:49.03 We've also changed the dynamics of the rest of the facility 00:17:49.06\00:17:54.30 there. We've hybridized part of the system where we can invite 00:17:54.34\00:17:59.34 people like VRBO (vacation rental by owner) and air B and B 00:17:59.37\00:18:01.64 and those type of places so they can come down and just find out 00:18:01.68\00:18:05.31 who we are and what we do. And we market it that we're a you 00:18:05.35\00:18:10.05 know a Christian based organization that treats these 00:18:10.09\00:18:13.09 lifestyle centers. We're a non profit and it is amazing how 00:18:13.12\00:18:17.79 many people we have had out there to experience what we do. 00:18:17.83\00:18:21.10 In fact, we had 11 pastors now from different denominations 00:18:21.13\00:18:24.67 coming out there because they just want a nice place so they 00:18:24.70\00:18:28.00 can take their family that doesn't have the alcohol and the 00:18:28.04\00:18:31.11 drugs and all the you know things, rollercoasters and 00:18:31.14\00:18:37.35 everything. They just want... Yeah and so it's just worked to 00:18:37.38\00:18:40.45 the benefit of the Lord because that's everything we want to do 00:18:40.48\00:18:43.28 and we can witness to people in that caliber too. We also have 00:18:43.32\00:18:47.82 it available for pastoral retreats. If pastors want to 00:18:47.86\00:18:50.93 come out and just get some rest and relaxation and get refreshed 00:18:50.96\00:18:54.40 and revived. We've got the facility to do that. So we've 00:18:54.43\00:18:58.83 taken it and done more than just one thing and kind of expanded 00:18:58.87\00:19:03.44 it, opening up the doors, opening up the doors so we can 00:19:03.47\00:19:07.74 reach the community better and we have better access. So 00:19:07.78\00:19:11.71 basically, the health message has not changed and we're not 00:19:11.75\00:19:15.98 changing the health message. Spirit of prophecy is not 00:19:16.02\00:19:18.95 changed. We're not changing that. We're kind of changing 00:19:18.99\00:19:20.86 everything else. 00:19:20.89\00:19:22.22 I love that whole idea of...so it sounds to me like you don't 00:19:22.26\00:19:25.79 have to have two or three or four doctors on staff but you 00:19:25.83\00:19:31.93 have access to all of these medical professionals who are 00:19:31.97\00:19:35.37 experts in their specific field that can give input to patients 00:19:35.40\00:19:41.44 on a variety of different needs that they have. Is that 00:19:41.48\00:19:44.55 basically... 00:19:44.58\00:19:46.18 It is. And on top of that just because we have a wellness 00:19:46.21\00:19:49.45 program doesn't mean you have to be sick to come. You know you 00:19:49.48\00:19:53.05 might just need a retreat. You might need fresh air, sunshine 00:19:53.09\00:19:55.99 just break away from all of the past you know pandemic and 00:19:56.02\00:20:00.40 everything that's been going on by yourself, with your family. 00:20:00.43\00:20:03.77 And we can reach you with just your spiritual needs just to get 00:20:03.80\00:20:09.14 out in nature. When I met one of the pastors who was there and 00:20:09.17\00:20:12.27 he said his church had sent him there to have a like a day 00:20:12.31\00:20:17.05 retreat to breathe. And he talked to Mark and he said you 00:20:17.08\00:20:20.22 know this is a vacation I didn't know I needed. He said I stepped 00:20:20.25\00:20:24.12 foot on this property and I went down by the creek and he said 00:20:24.15\00:20:27.42 I sat there and I thought Lord you're in this place. And he 00:20:27.46\00:20:32.79 said so he went back to Mark and he said I'd like to stay here 00:20:32.83\00:20:36.00 longer. I want to do another night and Mark said yeah we can 00:20:36.03\00:20:38.27 house you another night. When he came back the next day he said I 00:20:38.30\00:20:42.54 would stay here another night, I just can't afford it. Mark said 00:20:42.57\00:20:44.47 yes you can because you're going to stay another night. So he let 00:20:44.51\00:20:47.71 him stay another night and that's when we met him and my 00:20:47.74\00:20:51.55 husband...and he was with another church organization... 00:20:51.58\00:20:54.95 and Wendell and him walked out to the car and I watched them 00:20:54.98\00:20:58.45 through the window and Wendell prayed with him and gave him the 00:20:58.49\00:21:02.49 Ten Commandments Twice Removed and some literature. And it's 00:21:02.52\00:21:05.26 like praise the Lord they're coming to us. They're coming to 00:21:05.29\00:21:09.13 the Black Hills. We don't even have to go out. It's like we're 00:21:09.16\00:21:11.83 fishing in a pond where the fish are jumping out on the bank and 00:21:11.87\00:21:14.74 we don't even need a hook. It's wonderful. 00:21:14.77\00:21:17.94 Am I understanding this correctly that if someone has a 00:21:17.97\00:21:20.58 concern they're like I have just newly diagnosed diabetes or I 00:21:20.61\00:21:23.41 have an autoimmune condition they don't have to wait for a 00:21:23.45\00:21:26.18 certain program that you guys have scheduled in? 00:21:26.21\00:21:29.25 No, they can call us and we can get them out, we've done that a 00:21:29.28\00:21:31.75 number of times already. Particular people have 00:21:31.79\00:21:35.19 particular needs and we need to take care of them. We're going 00:21:35.22\00:21:37.49 to take care of them. And one of the other bigger issues here is 00:21:37.53\00:21:40.83 that there's a lot of people out there that don't have the time 00:21:40.86\00:21:44.57 or the money. They don't have $7000 to come out or they don't 00:21:44.60\00:21:49.84 have three or four weeks to come out and my thought is why are we 00:21:49.87\00:21:55.38 eliminating 99 percent of the population because they don't 00:21:55.41\00:21:56.75 have the time or they don't have the funds to come out. And I 00:21:56.78\00:21:59.38 said let's redesign this so we can get people out here for a 00:21:59.41\00:22:02.05 couple days and in a couple days we can teach people what they 00:22:02.08\00:22:05.25 need to know so they can work on it on their own. So it's a 00:22:05.29\00:22:08.32 whole different concept. We're not called to reach the elite 00:22:08.36\00:22:11.96 you know only. We're supposed to reach as many people as we can 00:22:11.99\00:22:15.43 with whatever talents God has given us. I mean if you want to 00:22:15.46\00:22:18.43 just come out and learn some cooking, Melody's out there. 00:22:18.47\00:22:21.90 (Multiple voices) Yeah we've got cooking programs too, so you can 00:22:21.94\00:22:28.41 come out and learn cooking. 00:22:28.44\00:22:29.78 Rise, are you hearing what I'm hearing? Are you thinking what 00:22:29.81\00:22:31.58 I'm thinking. I'm just thinking about... 00:22:31.61\00:22:33.35 That we need to go out there? 00:22:33.38\00:22:34.72 Not just us. I'm just thinking about your patients. You know 00:22:34.75\00:22:37.95 Rise's a registered dietician in functional medicine and you talk 00:22:37.99\00:22:40.66 to people all the time who maybe could be helped by a day or two. 00:22:40.69\00:22:43.76 Yeah, I think one of the biggest requests that I've heard is I 00:22:43.79\00:22:46.36 want to go somewhere where I can learn how to live. Like all this 00:22:46.39\00:22:49.23 information makes sense but they're kind of on their own and 00:22:49.26\00:22:52.00 being able to go somewhere not just where everything's done for 00:22:52.03\00:22:55.60 them but where they actually learn the skills themselves. You 00:22:55.64\00:22:58.47 guys incorporate that? 00:22:58.51\00:22:59.84 Well, we did. This last program that we had that I left in the 00:22:59.87\00:23:02.98 middle of when they start out we're just getting into it so 00:23:03.01\00:23:07.68 we're doing most of the cooking for them. You know they're being 00:23:07.72\00:23:11.89 treated and the nurse is getting their information, the wellness 00:23:11.92\00:23:15.06 director trying to figure out what programs they need to use 00:23:15.09\00:23:19.56 them, what treatments. The second week they come in they're 00:23:19.59\00:23:22.83 in the kitchen more. You know they're doing their juicing if 00:23:22.86\00:23:25.60 they need to do juicing. They're actually taking upon themselves 00:23:25.63\00:23:30.07 to work in there and it was really creative the way that 00:23:30.11\00:23:34.64 Mark and Cheryl Lynn came up with a program to give them time 00:23:34.68\00:23:38.01 to where they have a point system so if they go in the 00:23:38.05\00:23:41.22 garden, if they're exercising even if they're sleeping, 00:23:41.25\00:23:44.35 whatever they're doing, rest, unplugging, unwinding, they get 00:23:44.39\00:23:49.49 points for that. And those points add up to where they get 00:23:49.52\00:23:52.76 some kind of a surprise, (reward) a reward for that. 00:23:52.79\00:23:56.53 Because you know a lot of people they just need rest and one of 00:23:56.56\00:23:59.53 the biggest hang-ups that we've seen from lifestyle centers is 00:23:59.57\00:24:03.37 sometimes they over pack everything so heavy that when 00:24:03.41\00:24:05.81 the people leave they're like so stressed out. When I'm 00:24:05.84\00:24:09.44 studying complaints a lot of people said they were just 00:24:09.48\00:24:12.91 over scheduled. So we've under scheduled people so that we can 00:24:12.95\00:24:16.62 have that opportunity to be working with them in the kitchen 00:24:16.65\00:24:19.59 (one on one). To give them time to go out and get some sunlight 00:24:19.62\00:24:21.92 and go out there and hike. As you know we're in the Black 00:24:21.96\00:24:24.96 Hills of South Dakota. We've got Badlands, we've got Custer State 00:24:24.99\00:24:29.46 Park, we've got Mount Rushmore, we've got Crazy Horse Mountain 00:24:29.50\00:24:32.53 How far away are those from where you're at? 00:24:32.57\00:24:35.40 Most of them are within 30 minutes, yeah, and Al has a 00:24:35.44\00:24:41.11 place over in Wyoming that he can take guests are certain 00:24:41.14\00:24:44.31 times in the summer to go digging for dinosaurs. 00:24:44.35\00:24:49.38 Anthropological dig for Southwestern Adventist 00:24:49.42\00:24:52.02 University. They've been coming out now for 20 years. 00:24:52.05\00:24:54.39 How far away is that from... 00:24:54.42\00:24:56.02 It's an hour and a half, but it's an amazing, amazing 00:24:56.06\00:25:00.43 opportunity and experience. They've pulled over 100,000 00:25:00.46\00:25:04.57 dinosaur bones out of that dig site and one of the interesting 00:25:04.60\00:25:11.24 stories is there was an atheist that wanted to come in basically 00:25:11.27\00:25:16.28 (take over) yeah. He wanted to come in and work this dig to 00:25:16.31\00:25:20.48 show that, you know... 00:25:20.52\00:25:22.85 That evolution is the way it is. 00:25:22.88\00:25:24.75 Exactly. The folks who owned the ranch are Christians. 00:25:24.79\00:25:29.76 Art Chadwick came in and shared and they said we want you 00:25:29.79\00:25:35.13 to do this. 00:25:35.16\00:25:36.50 So basically what you're saying is that when this site was 00:25:36.53\00:25:37.87 discovered, right, it's owned by a private couple, residents, 00:25:37.90\00:25:42.50 (correct) and when it was discovered there was an 00:25:42.54\00:25:44.51 evolutionist that wanted to come in and he just wanted to come in 00:25:44.54\00:25:47.68 and there were Christians that wanted to come in and both of 00:25:47.71\00:25:49.04 them wanted to o, o, I mean, oversee the site, and use it and 00:25:49.08\00:25:53.58 dig, etc., and the couple that owns are Christians and they 00:25:53.62\00:25:56.92 chose the Christians and so right now those are the people 00:25:56.95\00:25:59.82 that manage the site? (Yeah) Wow. 00:25:59.85\00:26:02.22 And in fact just this summer they've been building a new 00:26:02.26\00:26:06.13 facility, a large building so that they can keep everything 00:26:06.16\00:26:10.80 under cover. 00:26:10.83\00:26:12.17 Let me just clarify this. So do you say to people, Oh we have 00:26:12.20\00:26:15.37 this place about an hour and a half from us, you can go down 00:26:15.40\00:26:17.17 there if you want. Or do you actually, bring people there or 00:26:17.21\00:26:20.04 take people there. How does that work? 00:26:20.08\00:26:21.41 Well the couple that we met up with husband and wife, she was a 00:26:21.44\00:26:26.41 pastor at our church that we went to and so they wanted 00:26:26.45\00:26:30.62 something to do with the kids that would be meaningful and I 00:26:30.65\00:26:33.22 said, Would you like to take the kids out to see a dinosaur dig? 00:26:33.25\00:26:38.83 And they said, Can we do that? And I said yeah, yeah. It always 00:26:38.86\00:26:44.87 has interested me because I worked on an archeological dig 00:26:44.90\00:26:47.80 years ago. And it's fascinating. Anthropology and archeology. 00:26:47.84\00:26:52.97 Anyway they said, When can we go? I said well let me check the 00:26:53.01\00:26:57.15 schedule and a couple of days later I said I can't stay out 00:26:57.18\00:27:00.95 there for long but follow me. And the follow me part is crazy 00:27:00.98\00:27:06.05 because getting there is, yeah, it's a little tricky. But they 00:27:06.09\00:27:11.96 came back and they said this was a lifetime experience that we 00:27:11.99\00:27:20.34 had. We never experienced anything like it. We want to 00:27:20.37\00:27:21.90 come back, bring some of our church members and bring our 00:27:21.94\00:27:25.97 kids back and guess where they're going to have to stay? 00:27:26.01\00:27:29.28 At Black Hills. Yeah, we do actually take people on adventures. We've got vans 00:27:29.31\00:27:35.25 and everything that we transport people. We try to make every 00:27:35.28\00:27:39.99 adventure that we go on have some type of meaning. Like I 00:27:40.02\00:27:44.29 took a whole group to the Badlands which is one of the 00:27:44.33\00:27:46.90 most amazing places that God created and for lunch, I had my 00:27:46.93\00:27:54.27 cooler there full of junk food. I mean it was just loaded with 00:27:54.30\00:28:00.24 pizza boxes, and jerky and sodas and (Multiple voices) and so 00:28:00.28\00:28:05.35 these people are gathered around you know and I opened up this 00:28:05.38\00:28:08.22 thing and here's all this junk food you know. They're just like 00:28:08.25\00:28:11.09 shocked but I wanted to teach them that when you're out there 00:28:11.12\00:28:15.82 traveling you need to be prepared. Otherwise, you're 00:28:15.86\00:28:18.76 going settle for whatever's at the next stop. That's why 00:28:18.79\00:28:21.83 truckers have such a big problem because they get hungry and 00:28:21.86\00:28:24.73 they're going to settle for whatever's at the next exit. And 00:28:24.77\00:28:28.04 so we need to do...and so we use this...and then I pull out the 00:28:28.07\00:28:30.41 real food that they need to be eating, you know. But we try to 00:28:30.44\00:28:33.58 make every single adventure have some type of a learning 00:28:33.61\00:28:36.95 experience that is really going to have an impact in their life. 00:28:36.98\00:28:38.88 And a Christian experience on top of that. We bring the Lord 00:28:38.91\00:28:42.52 into it. 00:28:42.55\00:28:43.89 It sounds like you guys really accomplished your goal of 00:28:43.92\00:28:45.49 creating something that was unique and distinct from other 00:28:45.52\00:28:47.69 lifestyle centers. So you mentioned the location. You know 00:28:47.72\00:28:51.56 it sounds amazing. I've never been to South Dakota. I really 00:28:51.59\00:28:53.80 would love to go. And then the treatment, how you can bring 00:28:53.83\00:28:56.93 people in with various health concerns at different times and 00:28:56.97\00:29:00.37 still, be able to minister to them. Plus they've got two 00:29:00.40\00:29:05.01 excellent chefs. Is there anything else that makes you 00:29:05.04\00:29:06.37 guys you know different and unique? 00:29:06.41\00:29:07.74 You know I think one of the unique things, we've been 00:29:07.78\00:29:10.31 working on this program of a protocol whenever they contact 00:29:10.35\00:29:14.98 us or however we get ahold of them and we speak to them. 00:29:15.02\00:29:17.35 Mark is usually the person they talk to first and it's like what 00:29:17.39\00:29:22.09 are your goals? What do you want from us. What are you wanting to 00:29:22.12\00:29:26.19 achieve? It might not be weight loss, it might not be diabetes, 00:29:26.23\00:29:29.56 it might be something spiritual. We don't know. And so we find 00:29:29.60\00:29:35.47 the information out and if they choose to come to one of our 00:29:35.50\00:29:37.37 events, you know, like a two week, a three week, whatever we 00:29:37.41\00:29:41.58 have in one of our sessions then we have to dig a little deeper 00:29:41.61\00:29:45.45 and find out what's your life style at home, especially if 00:29:45.48\00:29:47.85 it's weight loss, diabetes, one of our lifestyle diseases. And 00:29:47.88\00:29:51.95 then we can set them up with a list of what they're going to 00:29:51.99\00:29:56.86 need when they get back home. So when they go back home 00:29:56.89\00:29:59.59 they're not set up for failure. Because if they don't purge and 00:29:59.63\00:30:02.86 do something different at home before they come then what's 00:30:02.90\00:30:05.73 going to happen when they get back? (Same o same o) Same o 00:30:05.77\00:30:09.10 I'm tired. I've been traveling all day, I've been flying, I 00:30:09.14\00:30:11.54 missed my flight. Things happen, I get home, I'm hungry, there's 00:30:11.57\00:30:14.34 nothing in the house. Well it's not going to hurt me to eat this 00:30:14.38\00:30:18.05 one time. I've got leftover cake and chips or whatever or Little 00:30:18.08\00:30:22.58 Debbie's, whatever they have in the cabinet. Yes, and I'm going 00:30:22.62\00:30:25.59 to eat that. And then when they go through the program, I mean 00:30:25.62\00:30:29.62 they leave kicking and screaming they don't want to go. 00:30:29.66\00:30:32.23 We got to give them projects. 00:30:32.26\00:30:33.60 We have to give them projects. And when they get back home 00:30:33.63\00:30:36.33 we have what we call coaches and they don't leave them. If 00:30:36.36\00:30:40.54 we have to call them every week if that's what it takes months 00:30:40.57\00:30:45.11 (two or three times a week) Yeah, we call them, we talk to 00:30:45.14\00:30:47.44 them. The people are constantly what are your needs now, what 00:30:47.48\00:30:50.95 can we do to help you to be successful with the goals you 00:30:50.98\00:30:54.02 set before you came. 00:30:54.05\00:30:55.48 I love that. So what kind of staff, do you have there? I mean 00:30:55.52\00:30:57.49 you must have a thousand people on staff or what. (Laughter) 00:30:57.52\00:31:00.62 We have literally a dozen and a lot of part-timers when we need 00:31:00.66\00:31:07.56 them for particular things. We just bring in people as we need 00:31:07.60\00:31:11.23 We've even hybridized that you know back in Vegas. We call them 00:31:11.27\00:31:15.44 an extra board. And you've got your extra board, well basically 00:31:15.47\00:31:20.08 got the same system with doctors nurses, whatever, you know, 00:31:20.11\00:31:22.84 personnel we need, even house keeping so when we do have those 00:31:22.88\00:31:26.38 times where it's a high time then we can bring in those 00:31:26.41\00:31:29.22 people. 00:31:29.25\00:31:30.59 And then you can also call on maybe people that you know that 00:31:30.62\00:31:33.69 are in ministry that may come in a do a couples retreat 00:31:33.72\00:31:36.12 (Multiple voices and laughter) 00:31:36.16\00:31:43.67 Do we know anybody who can do that? 00:31:43.70\00:31:45.03 Well because you know speaking of couples retreats see that's 00:31:45.07\00:31:48.47 another thing that we've changed the dynamics of on the property. 00:31:48.50\00:31:52.01 It was just focused on wellness. And we're looking at doing a 00:31:52.04\00:31:58.55 couples retreat this coming year We also have a family camp 00:31:58.58\00:32:01.75 that's going to be taking place every memorial day weekend, then 00:32:01.78\00:32:06.15 the week before and after so we've got a whole time there and 00:32:06.19\00:32:09.16 families can come out there. We had a whole group of family come 00:32:09.19\00:32:12.29 out there last year and they absolutely loved it. They were 00:32:12.33\00:32:15.33 because we have projects. They would go out to the garden and 00:32:15.36\00:32:18.87 pick all the greens, the kids, we're talking 10-year-old kids 00:32:18.90\00:32:21.90 and then they'd come in the kitchen and prepare the meal for 00:32:21.94\00:32:24.24 the parents and everything. And they were loving it. No TVs, we 00:32:24.27\00:32:27.58 don't have TVs. We have trails. And it allows the kids to 00:32:27.61\00:32:32.61 actually, grow up and enjoy a good environment. 00:32:32.65\00:32:35.35 We do have internet. It's just you can't hardly use it. That's 00:32:35.38\00:32:40.39 really a good purpose. (That's very good) 00:32:40.42\00:32:42.56 But we also have another program that we're developing which is 00:32:42.59\00:32:47.43 the parents' prayer conference. And you might be able to tell a 00:32:47.46\00:32:51.13 little bit more about that. 00:32:51.17\00:32:52.50 Because this was your idea. Now you're in trouble. 00:32:52.53\00:32:55.90 This was my idea so when we had our break earlier this year I 00:32:55.94\00:33:00.91 thought I would go back home down in Georgia and just kind of 00:33:00.94\00:33:03.24 relax and put this prayer retreat together. And you know 00:33:03.28\00:33:08.68 it wouldn't be any big deal. I'd study and I'd pray and then I'd 00:33:08.72\00:33:11.05 be ready to do the prayer retreat but God kind of had 00:33:11.09\00:33:13.12 something else different in mind because the prayer retreat we'd 00:33:13.15\00:33:16.76 call is Turning Hearts Toward Home and it is specifically for 00:33:16.79\00:33:19.39 parents who have adult children that are not walking with the 00:33:19.43\00:33:22.53 Lord. Because I have a real burden for that because we have 00:33:22.56\00:33:25.63 children who are not walking with the Lord. And I know a lot 00:33:25.67\00:33:28.97 of people, it used to be when Al and I started in ministry 22 00:33:29.00\00:33:31.87 years ago you could ask in the church who had kids who were 00:33:31.91\00:33:34.44 outside and you'd get a few hands raised. Now it's just you 00:33:34.48\00:33:37.25 know everyone. So we thought that would be a great thing but 00:33:37.28\00:33:41.32 instead, God asked us to go and help one of our sons and 00:33:41.35\00:33:46.62 daughters-in-law who no longer had after-school care and if we 00:33:46.65\00:33:50.06 would come and take care of the girls. So I have not been 00:33:50.09\00:33:55.66 quietly retreating and...I've been doing lots of praying but I 00:33:55.70\00:34:00.00 have not been quietly retreating I have been back cleaning house 00:34:00.04\00:34:03.47 and getting little girls out the door to school in the morning 00:34:03.51\00:34:06.74 and it is...I have to say it's probably one of the most 00:34:06.78\00:34:10.28 humbling experiences of my life because when you have a five 00:34:10.31\00:34:13.01 year old who's having a melt down in the middle of the store 00:34:13.05\00:34:15.75 because you won't buy her the junk food that she asks to buy 00:34:15.78\00:34:18.92 or the...it's just...I can't tell you what a challenge it's 00:34:18.95\00:34:23.66 been for me. Sometimes I would go home and I'd say to Al I have 00:34:23.69\00:34:28.06 people who ask my advice. I have people who call and ask me for 00:34:28.10\00:34:29.83 help and have these two kids who think I'm just being a mean 00:34:29.86\00:34:32.60 grandma because I won't...and Al looked at me and he said do they 00:34:32.63\00:34:38.07 know what you do? And I said, No, and I don't think they care, 00:34:38.11\00:34:39.64 to be honest. But you know we've prayed for years that God would 00:34:39.67\00:34:45.41 send somebody into our kids life to demonstrate God's love to 00:34:45.45\00:34:48.28 them. We just didn't expect for it to be us. You know, so we've 00:34:48.32\00:34:52.52 been there. So God is developing this humility in me before we 00:34:52.55\00:34:58.13 put this prayer retreat together on how do you really pray. And I 00:34:58.16\00:35:01.16 know one thing when we first got there He started waking me 00:35:01.20\00:35:03.63 up somewhere between two and five a.m. And I would go out on 00:35:03.67\00:35:07.34 the porch and I would pray and sometimes for an hour, an hour 00:35:07.37\00:35:10.67 and a half and then I would come back. And then there was...and 00:35:10.71\00:35:15.28 things just started to decompress and to calm down 00:35:15.31\00:35:18.45 and especially in the mornings when it was absolute chaos. Then 00:35:18.48\00:35:23.22 I got where God really. I have to wake up. Can I just sleep for 00:35:23.25\00:35:28.09 a little bit more. But what I found out was if I didn't get up 00:35:28.12\00:35:30.13 in the middle of the night and pray then it would be chaos. It 00:35:30.16\00:35:33.19 wasn't...I couldn't wake up two minutes before breakfast and say 00:35:33.23\00:35:37.30 a quick prayer and have the same effect as when I was willing to 00:35:37.33\00:35:40.00 get up in the middle of the night. So I'm excited about this 00:35:40.04\00:35:43.67 prayer retreat. We are going to put together a couple of Zoom 00:35:43.71\00:35:47.98 calls so if you're interested in that you can call the center 00:35:48.01\00:35:51.88 [(605) 255-4101] and find out when those calls are going to be 00:35:51.91\00:35:53.25 But we're doing it specifically so we're walking through Steps 00:35:53.28\00:35:57.62 to Christ in the Sanctuary, so this prayer retreat is not 00:35:57.65\00:36:01.39 actually starting with praying for our kids. It's starting with 00:36:01.42\00:36:03.43 seeking God and rending our own hearts and finding out where we 00:36:03.46\00:36:08.83 might be holding onto things or where we might need to seek 00:36:08.86\00:36:12.73 forgiveness, maybe from our kids maybe from somebody else. You 00:36:12.77\00:36:15.64 know because when you move through the sanctuary, you had 00:36:15.67\00:36:19.27 to have that cleansing in order to be able to move and to stand 00:36:19.31\00:36:22.08 and I keep thinking of Moses and how you know when he was headed 00:36:22.11\00:36:26.31 to Egypt, you know the Bible tells us that the angel was 00:36:26.35\00:36:30.22 standing there with a sword because he was missing one of 00:36:30.25\00:36:32.95 the commands. So how do we establish that. How do we put 00:36:32.99\00:36:36.32 ourselves so that we can really stand in the gap and pray for 00:36:36.36\00:36:40.33 our kids? So that's what it's going to be about. The Zoom 00:36:40.36\00:36:43.67 calls are going to walk you through it and then that group 00:36:43.70\00:36:46.20 will go off on their own. So it's not going to be something 00:36:46.23\00:36:48.20 where hey I call the spirit call I can join. It's going to 00:36:48.24\00:36:51.91 actually, start and walkthrough a process and then that group 00:36:51.94\00:36:54.44 will go on and then we'll start another group because it's a 00:36:54.48\00:36:57.71 very specific steps that we're going through to be able to... 00:36:57.75\00:37:01.48 But I know there's a lot hurting parents out there and they just 00:37:01.52\00:37:06.12 can't figure out why. We're just lost. What did we do wrong? 00:37:06.15\00:37:09.76 Where is it? And... 00:37:09.79\00:37:12.26 Discover the solutions. (Yeah) 00:37:12.29\00:37:14.13 And when it comes time to press together shoulder to shoulder 00:37:14.16\00:37:17.30 that so the shadow of Satan cannot fall. And I believe that 00:37:17.33\00:37:21.20 as parents if we would press together and pray and encourage 00:37:21.24\00:37:25.21 one another instead of becoming discouraged and feeling like 00:37:25.24\00:37:28.08 it's just hopeless and you know there's nothing we can do. There 00:37:28.11\00:37:34.28 is something we can do and maybe God didn't call you to actually 00:37:34.32\00:37:37.05 be in the household with them like He did us for the short 00:37:37.09\00:37:41.26 period of time but I know that being there and seeing what's 00:37:41.29\00:37:45.66 actually happening and Melody's done the same thing. And you 00:37:45.69\00:37:48.86 just kind of want to go yow this is what's happening. I had no 00:37:48.90\00:37:52.63 idea. 00:37:52.67\00:37:54.37 Yeah, as you were talking there I was thinking about there's a 00:37:54.40\00:37:56.14 prophecy in Isaiah 11, the first half of Isaiah 11, is about 00:37:56.17\00:38:01.48 Christ, specifically His first incarnation here, you know when 00:38:01.51\00:38:04.51 He came to this earth. The second half is about what He's 00:38:04.55\00:38:07.22 going to do through His people in the last days and it talks 00:38:07.25\00:38:11.12 specifically about God collecting all of His people 00:38:11.15\00:38:14.39 from all the four corners, all those people who've been 00:38:14.42\00:38:17.39 dispersed, all the remnant of His people, all those people who 00:38:17.43\00:38:19.89 are the outcasts of Israel that are going to be brought back. I 00:38:19.93\00:38:24.30 used to feel like that's a powerful promise that we can 00:38:24.33\00:38:25.67 claim for this specific ministry you're focusing on because we're 00:38:25.70\00:38:29.50 empty nesters this year for the first time. You know letting 00:38:29.54\00:38:31.91 your children go out of the home that's hard. Then they start 00:38:31.94\00:38:35.51 making their own decisions, going their own directions. You 00:38:35.54\00:38:37.85 know our kids you know they believe in God and we really 00:38:37.88\00:38:42.85 appreciate their walk with the Lord. But you know we always 00:38:42.88\00:38:45.99 have a burden for our children that you know it would be 00:38:46.02\00:38:48.39 stronger and better and you know more. And I love this fact that 00:38:48.42\00:38:53.63 you're doing this ministry, that this is something that will 00:38:53.66\00:38:56.93 really attract a lot of people. And I think we would like to 00:38:56.97\00:38:59.13 be part of that. 00:38:59.17\00:39:00.50 Is this the Zoom or is this something the people have 00:39:00.54\00:39:02.54 come... (Both) So we're going to do a retreat at Black Hills when 00:39:02.57\00:39:04.67 we put it all together but I want to start having a couple of 00:39:04.71\00:39:07.91 different Zoom calls that people can join for their time right 00:39:07.94\00:39:11.41 now and we can walk through the process. My hope is that once 00:39:11.45\00:39:14.38 you've gone through it with us for eight to 10 weeks on a 00:39:14.42\00:39:18.75 weekly basis then when we have the retreat some of those people 00:39:18.79\00:39:21.86 will want to come as prayer leaders in different rooms to be 00:39:21.89\00:39:25.33 able to say I've been doing this I've been getting these kind of 00:39:25.36\00:39:30.43 results, this is how the Holy Spirit is working. And just 00:39:30.47\00:39:32.03 encourage people who come to the retreat that sometimes it's 00:39:32.07\00:39:37.97 difficult for a variety of reasons, right? But you can 00:39:38.01\00:39:42.01 start to see results. I don't want to take all the time. I 00:39:42.04\00:39:44.75 just want to share this tiny little story that I'm fussing 00:39:44.78\00:39:48.35 and carrying on, why am I cleaning the house. Why is my 00:39:48.38\00:39:50.72 daughter-in-law dressing up and going to work. It's her house. 00:39:50.75\00:39:53.05 I'm a career woman too. Why am I doing all this, right? 00:39:53.09\00:39:55.39 Yeah, why am I taking care of the chickens? 00:39:55.42\00:40:00.13 That's a different story. Anyway so we'd been there about three 00:40:00.16\00:40:06.23 or four weeks and I was starting to get things back and we had to 00:40:06.27\00:40:08.87 go back to our house which is three hours away on a weekend 00:40:08.90\00:40:11.97 and our son had come home early to watch the girls and when we 00:40:12.01\00:40:16.38 were home and I had the house clean, and I told the girls, you 00:40:16.41\00:40:19.11 guys are going to help me because Mom and Dad are going to 00:40:19.15\00:40:21.12 have a better weekend, they're going to spend more time with 00:40:21.15\00:40:23.25 you if you help me clean this house. I didn't ask them to do 00:40:23.28\00:40:26.39 much by anyway, they're five and 11, so. And then we left and 00:40:26.42\00:40:34.43 later that evening I got a text from my son that said: Miss you 00:40:34.46\00:40:37.77 guys already. We're out of energy bites and oh by the way 00:40:37.80\00:40:42.10 it was so wonderful to come home on Friday and have the house 00:40:42.14\00:40:48.54 clean for Sabbath. My son hasn't gone to church on a Sabbath 00:40:48.58\00:40:53.05 church in years. I didn't even know he still cared. And that 00:40:53.08\00:40:56.72 was like signpost that God gave me, things are happening, the 00:40:56.75\00:41:02.02 Holy Spirit is working. And I was like, Okay God I'll go back 00:41:02.06\00:41:05.39 and clean the house again. 00:41:05.43\00:41:07.50 If we'd be willing to love people the way that they can 00:41:07.53\00:41:09.60 understand and that they need to be loved at that time in their 00:41:09.63\00:41:12.10 life. So important you were willing to be able to love them 00:41:12.13\00:41:14.84 like that. 00:41:14.87\00:41:16.81 So that's what I feel we're doing. We're not there to change 00:41:16.84\00:41:19.41 them. We've just there to love them and to be God's hands and 00:41:19.44\00:41:23.24 feet for them right now in their life in whatever way that they 00:41:23.28\00:41:26.31 need. 00:41:26.35\00:41:27.68 Tell us how do you do that in your school. In the beginning 00:41:27.72\00:41:29.52 of this hour you started talking about your massage school. 00:41:29.55\00:41:31.45 I hate to switch gears but I know time's ticking and I want 00:41:31.49\00:41:34.26 to hear more about it. 00:41:34.29\00:41:35.62 Well, where do we start? We started it like I said in 2015 00:41:35.66\00:41:41.20 when we went to Black Hills to teach for two months and now 00:41:41.23\00:41:45.63 it's been seven years. Anyway that's long story short. But the 00:41:45.67\00:41:50.87 massage school we feel like it's a unique program. Not only do we 00:41:50.91\00:41:54.91 teach massage but we teach other aspects of lifestyle 00:41:54.94\00:42:00.18 approaches. Bren 00:42:00.22\00:42:02.62 teaches a class of nutrition, psychology spiritually focused. 00:42:02.65\00:42:07.92 What other sections do you do? Spiritual, we do one called 00:42:07.96\00:42:13.80 spiritual care which within massage licensing they have 00:42:13.83\00:42:18.33 something called personal care so we just call it spiritual 00:42:18.37\00:42:20.84 care and the licensing board accepts it. But 30 minutes a day 00:42:20.87\00:42:25.37 we talk about how do you study your Bible. And we have a mix. 00:42:25.41\00:42:29.08 We do not just have students from just one denomination, we 00:42:29.11\00:42:32.31 have who might not be Christians at all or they belong to other 00:42:32.35\00:42:36.25 denominations and so that's been really exciting for us because 00:42:36.28\00:42:41.56 we feel the school exists to teach people to use massage as a 00:42:41.59\00:42:45.26 mission outreach. And in whatever way, whether it's their 00:42:45.29\00:42:48.76 own practice or if they're going to work for a lifestyle center 00:42:48.80\00:42:51.53 or whatever they want to do but they're using it for mission and 00:42:51.57\00:42:54.00 for service to others. And so we really try to focus on that 00:42:54.04\00:42:58.84 aspect of it. We don't teach any New Age modalities. It's all 00:42:58.87\00:43:01.98 science-based. It's all credible kind of stuff and we've seen 00:43:02.01\00:43:08.08 some amazing stories come out of students there. 00:43:08.12\00:43:11.89 So this is a school where someone goes and they pay 00:43:11.92\00:43:14.32 tuition and they go through the classes and they come out and 00:43:14.36\00:43:16.83 can go out into the community and get a job. 00:43:16.86\00:43:18.63 Ah well there's a couple of other steps in there but... 00:43:18.66\00:43:25.47 Our program is six and a half months. Our first four months 00:43:25.50\00:43:28.87 basically are online and they can stay at home. Classes are in 00:43:28.90\00:43:32.24 the late afternoon and evening. They can work still, which is a 00:43:32.27\00:43:35.28 big issue. Previously students had to come to campus for six 00:43:35.31\00:43:41.28 and a half months. And some said I can't do that. I can't give up 00:43:41.32\00:43:45.42 my job. And we were getting smaller numbers of students. And 00:43:45.45\00:43:49.62 we did some praying about it. The last two classes basically 00:43:49.66\00:43:53.46 are full. (When you say full?) 11, 12. Yeah and this is the 00:43:53.50\00:44:00.04 first time since we've been there that all of the students 00:44:00.07\00:44:03.07 in the last two classes were Adventists. Now you say well 00:44:03.10\00:44:06.57 what's that? You know what, that's what our ministry is 00:44:06.61\00:44:10.75 toward...How do we teach young people that can be therapists 00:44:10.78\00:44:13.62 that can be ministers for the Lord. And some of them are just 00:44:13.65\00:44:17.59 doing amazing things. They're also earning good incomes to go 00:44:17.62\00:44:22.19 along with it. And like Mark said our program is cheap 00:44:22.22\00:44:26.66 compared to what most schools charge. I mean they come to 00:44:26.70\00:44:29.86 Black. They're there for two and a half months, food, everything, 00:44:29.90\00:44:35.77 housing. And so we're the only as I said before we're the only 00:44:35.80\00:44:39.07 Adventist school and probably the only Christian school in the 00:44:39.11\00:44:42.34 United States. 00:44:42.38\00:44:43.71 All right I hate to say this but our time is running short. Is 00:44:43.75\00:44:50.02 there something else that you have a burden on your heart to 00:44:50.05\00:44:51.39 share that you want to get out here to the people that are 00:44:51.42\00:44:52.75 listening. 00:44:52.79\00:44:54.12 Yeah, probably the biggest thing to point out is how we're 00:44:54.16\00:44:56.02 reaching people where they're at regardless if they're on a 00:44:56.06\00:45:03.20 health journey or if they're having spiritual issues or 00:45:03.23\00:45:06.84 family issues, it's all about reaching people where they're at 00:45:06.87\00:45:08.87 And what we have over there is a program called Biblical 00:45:08.90\00:45:13.61 Response Therapy. (Okay BRT) Now Biblical Response Therapy was 00:45:13.64\00:45:18.01 actually started by Pastor Dan Gabbard and it's just starting 00:45:18.05\00:45:23.92 to really grow into something. And basically, it's about 00:45:23.95\00:45:28.76 helping people with Biblical principles on how to deal with 00:45:28.79\00:45:33.16 their issues and it's not always, let me see it's not always the issues. Here 00:45:33.19\00:45:38.17 let me read this to you here. Counsels on Health, p. 324 00:45:38.20\00:45:42.17 Sickness of the mind prevails everywhere. Nine-tenths of the 00:45:42.20\00:45:48.81 disease from which men suffer have their foundation here. The 00:45:48.84\00:45:53.25 healing then is in the word of God where God expresses His 00:45:53.28\00:45:59.72 healing thoughts. Psalms 107:20 God sent His word and healed 00:45:59.75\00:46:05.56 them and delivered them from their destruction. So we try to 00:46:05.59\00:46:08.93 apply that to every single element of what we do and 00:46:08.96\00:46:12.33 Biblical Response Therapy actually trains people how to do 00:46:12.37\00:46:16.17 this, how to deal with whatever problems they have in life. 00:46:16.20\00:46:19.04 Let's look at the Biblical aspect of it and focus on the 00:46:19.07\00:46:24.18 solutions instead of focusing on the problem let's do a solution 00:46:24.21\00:46:28.32 focused program. And it's fabulous and so we've got 00:46:28.35\00:46:34.72 programs coming up where you can send people from your 00:46:34.76\00:46:36.09 congregation over the learn Biblical Response Therapy 00:46:36.12\00:46:38.49 programs and bring it back to your church. 00:46:38.53\00:46:40.76 There's so much you are doing at Black Hills... 00:46:40.80\00:46:46.03 And we're still thinking more. 00:46:46.07\00:46:47.40 Yeah. There's a lot of people that come through a health 00:46:47.44\00:46:49.54 program okay and they change their diet and they change their 00:46:49.57\00:46:53.14 lifestyle but they don't get to the core of the problem it's 00:46:53.17\00:46:55.18 just going to come back the them So we need to be able to go in 00:46:55.21\00:46:59.48 there and...Jim, Jim Martin who's heading up that department 00:46:59.51\00:47:03.49 right now? He is so wonderful at just compassionately finding 00:47:03.52\00:47:09.02 out what those problems are and bringing those solutions to them 00:47:09.06\00:47:13.09 And once they realize it, it's like a light bulb going off in 00:47:13.13\00:47:15.70 their head. It's like some people just didn't even realize 00:47:15.73\00:47:18.10 it. And one lady she had such issues and she was having 00:47:18.13\00:47:22.67 trouble getting off diabetes problems and it wasn't about the 00:47:22.70\00:47:27.01 diabetes; it was about other issues in her life that was 00:47:27.04\00:47:28.78 jacking up her cortisol level so hard. I don't know the technical 00:47:28.81\00:47:32.81 part of it. But once she realized, she had that breath of 00:47:32.85\00:47:37.79 fresh air and just everything calmed down and then her health 00:47:37.82\00:47:41.22 started working right. 00:47:41.26\00:47:42.59 People have high blood sugar for many reasons, not just carbs. 00:47:42.62\00:47:45.66 Exactly, exactly. 00:47:45.69\00:47:47.06 So I love that. I love the fact that they're getting therapy but 00:47:47.10\00:47:50.20 it's biblically based (absolutely) and I love that 00:47:50.23\00:47:53.34 statement that you read that God sent his word and healed them 00:47:53.37\00:47:58.27 because that's how I was healed you know from my addiction. I 00:47:58.31\00:48:02.24 was healed because God said to me personally I forgive you and 00:48:02.28\00:48:08.32 you don't have to carry this load of guilt. You're free from 00:48:08.35\00:48:09.68 that. 00:48:09.72\00:48:11.05 You know I just want to add something. We do have a few 00:48:11.09\00:48:12.89 people there who have some because they have addictions 00:48:12.92\00:48:14.59 whether it be drug, whether it be alcoholism. They've come 00:48:14.62\00:48:18.19 there and they feel safe, they feel secure. And it's like a 00:48:18.23\00:48:23.13 child doesn't want to leave the nest. They want to stay there a 00:48:23.16\00:48:24.50 little bit so they work and they do things on the property that 00:48:24.53\00:48:26.50 we need people to do because they just want to stay there. 00:48:26.53\00:48:29.30 And I'll never forget, I got a text the other day from one of 00:48:29.34\00:48:33.07 them. My husband and I have really been talking with him, 00:48:33.11\00:48:35.94 pruning him and he's just such a sweet guy. And he said, Melody 00:48:35.98\00:48:39.58 I went to church for the first time this Sabbath. And he said I 00:48:39.61\00:48:44.35 really loved it. And on down he said with a bit smiley face, God 00:48:44.39\00:48:49.09 loves me. 00:48:49.12\00:48:50.79 Amen, amen. 00:48:50.83\00:48:52.16 We've had a few drug addictions we've been doing detoxing and 00:48:52.19\00:48:56.10 rehab on them and there was a couple of them that you know 00:48:56.13\00:49:01.10 went through their little three week program and I just 00:49:01.14\00:49:02.60 flat out said 00:49:02.64\00:49:03.97 you're not ready to go home yet I said we're going to cover the 00:49:04.01\00:49:08.31 expense but you need to stay here a little while longer and 00:49:08.34\00:49:10.01 they were willing to volunteer and things and the one person 00:49:10.05\00:49:14.98 has lost like 30 pounds already And you know another person's 00:49:15.02\00:49:18.62 going to church and just loving it. It was like...You know so it 00:49:18.65\00:49:23.29 ...I had something really profound told to me here just 00:49:23.32\00:49:26.09 the other day by Bob, one of the gentlemen that works here and he 00:49:26.13\00:49:30.67 said, A lot of Adventists are more than willing to go 00:49:30.70\00:49:32.60 out there and 00:49:32.63\00:49:34.17 fish, but they're not willing to clean the fish (Catch a fish but 00:49:34.20\00:49:37.67 not clean it) Right. And so where are we in life? Are we 00:49:37.71\00:49:42.34 just going to go out there and just keep fishing, just throwing 00:49:42.38\00:49:44.05 those reels out there but not willing to help clean them, you 00:49:44.08\00:49:47.35 know. The people have problems. We need to do more to help them 00:49:47.38\00:49:51.79 and guide them along their way one step at a time. 00:49:51.82\00:49:55.29 Got a sermon title from that. It's called Catch and Release. 00:49:55.32\00:49:57.43 And it seems like when we catch people and we don't nurture them 00:49:57.46\00:50:01.36 we're just catching and releasing. People need their 00:50:01.40\00:50:04.57 lifestyle changed. (Exactly) Yes 00:50:04.60\00:50:05.93 You know one of the things too that we're trying to do, it's 00:50:05.97\00:50:09.00 not just the massage school thing. We go out and do on sight 00:50:09.04\00:50:14.68 chair massage all over Rapid City and one of the things that 00:50:14.71\00:50:18.08 we've had a burden for is we're 25 minutes away from a booming 00:50:18.11\00:50:23.79 city and we haven't really figured out how to reach them. 00:50:23.82\00:50:27.56 And so this is what we're starting to do now. We go to the 00:50:27.59\00:50:31.26 YMCA to the swim center to various businesses and they've 00:50:31.29\00:50:35.46 said please come on up, please come and join us. Hope... 00:50:35.50\00:50:37.83 Yeah, into the communities exactly. 00:50:39.73\00:50:41.07 Yeah one of the schools contacted Jim about coming and 00:50:41.10\00:50:43.57 talking about the Biblical Response Theory to the children 00:50:43.61\00:50:47.08 at school, to a public school. 00:50:47.11\00:50:48.71 Praise the Lord. So any other thoughts you have we've got 56 00:50:48.74\00:50:53.35 seconds left. 00:50:53.38\00:50:54.88 If someone comes to Black Hills they get to eat your food or are 00:50:54.92\00:50:57.85 you are so busy being an organizer... 00:50:57.89\00:51:02.26 He's the breakfast, I'm the lunch. 00:51:02.29\00:51:03.63 We always remember that we ate there...(Laughter and voices) 00:51:03.66\00:51:08.43 it was really good. 00:51:08.46\00:51:10.33 Everyone knows we're going to have the best food you could 00:51:10.37\00:51:11.87 possibly get. 00:51:11.90\00:51:13.23 Oh yes if it's mine. (Laughter and multiple voices) 00:51:13.27\00:51:23.18 I'm excited about what you guys are doing. I think you created 00:51:23.21\00:51:28.05 exactly what you wanted to do. You've fulfilled your objectives 00:51:28.08\00:51:31.02 in creating something unique and focused. I love that the school 00:51:31.05\00:51:34.26 is combined with it too. I would love to come. 00:51:34.29\00:51:37.23 It's a wonderful place. When you come we don't have to tell you 00:51:37.26\00:51:41.46 about it. When you come you will experience it, you will not want 00:51:41.50\00:51:44.47 to leave, you will see it for yourself. 00:51:46.17\00:51:47.50 Amen, amen. We are going to be right back so don't go away. 00:51:47.54\00:51:49.74 If you would like to contact or know more about Black Hills 00:51:49.77\00:51:54.44 Health and Education Center you can do so in the following ways: 00:51:54.48\00:51:57.68 You can write to them at P.O.
