Amen. 00:02:55.27\00:02:57.81 Well, we are going to go to the Lord in prayer. 00:02:58.01\00:03:00.04 And we would like to remind you that you can become 00:03:00.24\00:03:02.88 part of the 3ABN family by being a prayer warrior. 00:03:03.08\00:03:07.12 What's a prayer warrior? 00:03:07.32\00:03:08.65 Do you have to go out into the battlefield and fight? No! 00:03:08.68\00:03:10.92 Prayer warriors pray for the prayer requests that 3ABN 00:03:11.12\00:03:14.39 brings to you every day. Every day we receive 00:03:14.59\00:03:17.73 prayer requests from around the world. 00:03:17.93\00:03:19.56 And we have people that receive some of these prayer requests. 00:03:19.76\00:03:22.70 We send them a few... not to overwhelm them. 00:03:22.90\00:03:25.63 And of course, some of you will hear prayers requests 00:03:25.83\00:03:29.00 when you're listening on radio. 00:03:29.20\00:03:30.54 And you will also see prayer requests on the screen 00:03:30.57\00:03:33.68 when you're watching on television. 00:03:33.88\00:03:35.21 And many people just jot them down 00:03:35.24\00:03:37.65 and pray for those needs. 00:03:37.85\00:03:39.35 And we can tell you that people call back and tell us: 00:03:39.55\00:03:42.62 "My prayer was answered! Thank you so much for praying. " 00:03:42.82\00:03:45.35 And it's a blessing to pray for others 00:03:45.55\00:03:47.42 because as you pray for others 00:03:47.62\00:03:49.66 you draw close to the Lord as well. Um-hmm! 00:03:49.86\00:03:51.83 So it's a wonderful opportunity. 00:03:52.03\00:03:53.36 Plus we want to pray for you as well. 00:03:53.40\00:03:55.60 You have your needs and you have your questions 00:03:55.80\00:03:57.83 about what is the Seventh-day Adventist church. 00:03:58.03\00:04:00.14 You've been listening and watching the programming 00:04:00.34\00:04:02.40 learning of the doctrines - Biblical doctrines - 00:04:02.60\00:04:05.24 and you may be questioning. 00:04:05.44\00:04:07.48 You know, many people hear that the church is a sect 00:04:08.18\00:04:13.15 or a cult, right? 00:04:13.35\00:04:15.15 So I just want you to invite you to prayerfully watch the program 00:04:15.35\00:04:19.09 and learn of what the SDA church is. 00:04:19.29\00:04:22.26 Yes, and people call with questions 00:04:22.76\00:04:25.06 and so we encourage you to call our prayer line. 00:04:25.26\00:04:28.06 Encourage you to call 3ABN if you have questions. 00:04:28.26\00:04:30.17 If you're calling from another country please remember to 00:04:36.97\00:04:39.04 add plus 1: 618-627-4651. 00:04:39.24\00:04:43.41 Let's go to the Lord in prayer. 00:04:43.61\00:04:45.01 Our wonderful and loving heavenly Father, 00:04:46.08\00:04:48.68 we thank you that we can approach Your throne of grace 00:04:49.08\00:04:53.02 with us knowing that You will always be there. 00:04:53.22\00:04:57.73 Knowing that You will listen to our prayer. 00:04:57.93\00:05:00.26 We thank you that we can come to You in Jesus' name 00:05:00.66\00:05:03.67 and we praise the Lord. We understand that there's 00:05:03.87\00:05:07.67 no other name under heaven whereby we can be saved. 00:05:07.87\00:05:12.84 Heavenly Father, we present to You the prayer requests 00:05:13.04\00:05:16.41 that have come in to 3ABN throughout this day. 00:05:16.61\00:05:19.95 You know each and every person; 00:05:20.35\00:05:21.68 You know each and every need. 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.52 And heavenly Father, You are all wise. 00:05:23.92\00:05:26.69 You know the end from the beginning. 00:05:26.89\00:05:28.36 And there are people that are ready today to be healed. 00:05:28.76\00:05:31.46 We pray for healing upon them. 00:05:31.66\00:05:33.06 Some must wait a little longer. 00:05:33.26\00:05:34.96 Help them to continue to trust in You. Yes. 00:05:35.16\00:05:37.43 And it may be that some will receive the answer that 00:05:37.63\00:05:40.84 the apostle Paul received: "My grace 00:05:41.04\00:05:43.91 is sufficient for thee. " Yes. 00:05:44.11\00:05:45.74 We pray, Lord, for those that are looking for a job. 00:05:45.94\00:05:48.68 Guide them to the place where they should go 00:05:48.88\00:05:51.55 and we pray that You will bless them with favor 00:05:51.75\00:05:53.92 that they may receive the job they need 00:05:54.12\00:05:57.49 not only to work and bring the money they need into their home 00:05:57.79\00:06:03.73 but also that their talents may be further developed 00:06:03.93\00:06:06.80 and where they can also shine & show others the love of Christ. 00:06:07.00\00:06:11.60 We pray, heavenly Father, for marriages that are having 00:06:12.00\00:06:14.44 difficulties. Be with them; guide them through the 00:06:14.64\00:06:17.61 process of coming to an agreement and continuing 00:06:17.81\00:06:22.31 facing the challenges of life looking unto Jesus. 00:06:22.51\00:06:25.38 And Lord, we pray for those that are praying for loved ones 00:06:25.78\00:06:29.12 that have perhaps left the walk... they left their walk 00:06:29.32\00:06:34.26 with Jesus and are out in the world. 00:06:34.42\00:06:36.16 We pray for Your Holy Spirit to speak to their hearts 00:06:36.56\00:06:39.73 to lead them back to the foot of the cross 00:06:39.93\00:06:43.10 and to salvation through Jesus Christ. 00:06:43.30\00:06:45.03 We ask for Your Holy Spirit. Guide us and help us 00:06:45.23\00:06:47.77 in this program - um-hmm - that the information that is shared 00:06:47.97\00:06:51.17 will be of great blessing to Your children. 00:06:51.57\00:06:54.94 We ask You to be with Dr. Trim 00:06:55.34\00:06:57.11 and Dr. Dragoslava and bless us. 00:06:57.31\00:07:00.98 We ask in Jesus' holy and blessed name. Amen. Amen. 00:07:01.18\00:07:04.92 Amen. 00:07:05.12\00:07:06.45 And we are going to read a scripture 00:07:07.09\00:07:10.69 Hebrews chapter 12 vs. 1 and 2. 00:07:10.89\00:07:13.26 Idalia, can you help us with that? 00:07:13.46\00:07:15.20 Sure. Hebrews 12:1-2 says: 00:07:15.40\00:07:18.87 "Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about 00:07:19.07\00:07:21.90 with so great a cloud of witnesses 00:07:22.10\00:07:24.97 let us lay aside every weight 00:07:25.17\00:07:27.31 and the sin which doth so easily beset us 00:07:27.51\00:07:30.75 and let us run with patience the race that is set before us. 00:07:30.95\00:07:36.15 Looking unto Jesus 00:07:36.35\00:07:38.89 the Author and Finisher of our faith 00:07:39.09\00:07:41.59 who, for the joy that was set before Him, 00:07:41.79\00:07:45.73 endured the cross, despising the shame 00:07:45.93\00:07:49.66 and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God. " 00:07:49.86\00:07:55.50 Praise the Lord! May the Lord add a blessing to His Word. 00:07:55.70\00:07:58.97 Amen... Amen. 00:07:59.17\00:08:00.58 Well, we'd like to know... Both of you, if you have 00:08:00.78\00:08:04.28 a comment about these scriptures? 00:08:04.48\00:08:06.72 This is my favorite scripture passage. 00:08:06.92\00:08:09.22 And you know the key is... if you just read it in isolation, 00:08:09.42\00:08:12.59 you may think: "Well, what is this about? " 00:08:12.85\00:08:15.26 But the key is the start which is - depending on the 00:08:15.46\00:08:17.76 translation - wherefore or therefore or even so. 00:08:17.96\00:08:20.80 Basically, it's connecting us back to Hebrews 11. 00:08:20.96\00:08:23.30 The chapter divisions, of course, aren't in the original. 00:08:23.50\00:08:27.17 They're something that gets added centuries later 00:08:27.37\00:08:29.94 as a convenience. 00:08:30.14\00:08:31.54 Really this chapter 12:1-2 is the end of chapter 11: 00:08:31.74\00:08:34.94 that great passage of the heroes of the faith. 00:08:35.14\00:08:37.81 And it's saying: "What's the lesson of this? " 00:08:38.01\00:08:40.78 "Since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses" 00:08:40.98\00:08:44.12 that is what can empower us. Yes. 00:08:44.32\00:08:46.45 To "Lay aside burdens and the sin that so easily ensnares us" 00:08:46.65\00:08:50.03 as one translation says 00:08:50.23\00:08:51.56 and "run the race set before us. " 00:08:51.66\00:08:54.20 And then the beautiful coda to it: 00:08:54.60\00:08:57.70 "Looking unto Jesus: the Author and Finisher of our faith. " 00:08:57.90\00:09:01.24 So as a historian I love the way that it refers back 00:09:01.44\00:09:04.27 to the history of the church and then says 00:09:04.47\00:09:07.48 "These are not just dead heroes of the past. 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.31 They are what can inspire us and empower us 00:09:10.51\00:09:13.42 to live a Christian life here and now 00:09:13.62\00:09:16.28 looking unto Jesus, the Author and Finisher of our faith. " 00:09:16.48\00:09:18.99 Amen! Amen! I know you could share some more about that 00:09:19.19\00:09:21.52 but we have limited time. Yes. 00:09:21.72\00:09:23.19 Dr. Santrac? I love the phrase: "Surrounded by a cloud 00:09:23.39\00:09:27.66 of witnesses. " Sometimes we may feel 00:09:27.86\00:09:31.07 abandoned and alone in our walk with God. 00:09:31.27\00:09:35.34 Perhaps sometimes mis- understood by our environment. 00:09:35.54\00:09:39.17 But knowing that so many before us have treaded 00:09:39.37\00:09:43.55 this same path and that the Finisher of our faith, 00:09:43.75\00:09:46.65 the Lord Jesus Christ, is the Author of that faith, 00:09:46.85\00:09:50.49 the Sustainer of that faith, and the One who will 00:09:50.69\00:09:55.19 give a prize at the end. 00:09:55.39\00:09:58.59 And this a beautiful text to introduce our talk 00:09:58.79\00:10:02.26 about the encyclopedia because the encyclopedia 00:10:02.46\00:10:05.40 has stories of these many many witnesses 00:10:05.60\00:10:08.44 to Christ's victory. 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.67 Indeed, if we... It's an online work 00:10:11.87\00:10:15.14 but it may eventually appear as a print edition. 00:10:15.34\00:10:17.68 And if it did, then I think the final part 00:10:17.88\00:10:20.35 after the last article under the letter Z 00:10:20.55\00:10:23.52 would say: "Therefore, since we are surrounded by 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.92 so great a cloud of witnesses. " 00:10:27.12\00:10:28.46 Excellent! Excellent! 00:10:28.62\00:10:29.96 Well you know, after being in- volved in 3ABN for so many yrs. 00:10:29.99\00:10:34.63 we know that people are very curious. 00:10:34.83\00:10:37.40 So people are wondering where are you both from 00:10:37.60\00:10:41.50 because you have an accent a little different than 00:10:41.70\00:10:44.64 the typical American accent. 00:10:44.84\00:10:46.64 We'll start with Dr. Santrac. 00:10:46.84\00:10:48.64 Yes. Well I was born in an Adventist family 00:10:49.04\00:10:52.28 and grew up in various cities in France. 00:10:52.48\00:10:55.48 At some point I moved with my parents 00:10:55.68\00:10:58.25 and two siblings to Serbia, 00:10:58.45\00:11:00.32 the country of origin of my parents. 00:11:00.52\00:11:03.12 And that's where I met my future husband Alex. 00:11:03.32\00:11:06.19 And Alex and I... we lived on three continents 00:11:06.39\00:11:10.93 while pursuing our education and while serving the church 00:11:11.13\00:11:15.17 in various capacities for the past almost 23 years. 00:11:15.37\00:11:18.61 So I guess I picked accents all over the place 00:11:18.81\00:11:22.14 wherever I lived. So... 00:11:22.34\00:11:23.68 Dr. Trim? Well my accent you may detect wanders a little 00:11:25.28\00:11:30.29 because that reflects my life. 00:11:30.49\00:11:32.12 I was born in India where my parents were missionaries. 00:11:32.32\00:11:35.22 I spent my childhood and early teenage years in Australia 00:11:35.62\00:11:38.96 where my father was from. 00:11:39.16\00:11:40.50 They moved to Britain where my mother was from. 00:11:40.53\00:11:43.33 At Adventist college in Britain I married an American girl... 00:11:43.53\00:11:47.97 a California girl as the song says... 00:11:48.17\00:11:51.84 and lived and worked in England for many years 00:11:52.77\00:11:56.44 but then was called by the church to work in the US. 00:11:56.64\00:11:59.25 So you'll hear a little bit of Australian. You'll hear 00:11:59.45\00:12:01.08 a little bit of British. As I say, it wanders a little bit. 00:12:01.28\00:12:06.69 Wanders a little bit. But overall? We're all pilgrims - 00:12:06.89\00:12:09.49 yes - in this world. That's right. 00:12:09.69\00:12:11.16 You're from the Dominican Republic & I'm from Puerto Rico. 00:12:11.36\00:12:13.40 Well overall, the language of love or your passion 00:12:13.80\00:12:18.93 for what you do for the Lord and for us all 00:12:19.13\00:12:22.64 to be able to understand where our church is from 00:12:22.84\00:12:26.24 and all the history of it. 00:12:26.44\00:12:28.08 We thank you for that. 00:12:28.28\00:12:29.64 Well, I'm excited about what we're going to hear 00:12:30.05\00:12:32.28 in a moment - yes - but first, we have a... 00:12:32.48\00:12:34.32 we'd like to share a musical offering. Um-hmm. 00:12:34.52\00:12:38.15 A musical offering. Yes... this musical offering 00:12:38.35\00:12:41.52 is going to be brought to us by a mother and daughter team. 00:12:41.72\00:12:44.36 And that is Celestine and Farrah and they will be 00:12:44.56\00:12:48.33 singing Fill My Cup. 00:12:48.53\00:12:51.00 Like the woman at the well 00:13:04.51\00:13:08.35 I was seeking 00:13:08.55\00:13:11.99 for things 00:13:13.22\00:13:14.82 that could not satisfy. 00:13:15.02\00:13:19.96 And then 00:13:21.26\00:13:23.03 I heard my Savior speaking: 00:13:23.23\00:13:27.80 "Draw from My well 00:13:28.00\00:13:30.91 that never shall run dry. " 00:13:31.37\00:13:35.71 Fill my cup, Lord. 00:13:36.38\00:13:39.25 I lift it up, Lord. 00:13:40.02\00:13:43.69 Come and quench 00:13:44.39\00:13:46.32 this thirsting of my soul. 00:13:46.72\00:13:51.49 Bread of Heaven, 00:13:52.13\00:13:54.66 fill me till I want no more. 00:13:54.86\00:14:00.60 Fill my cup... fill it up 00:14:01.00\00:14:03.77 and make me whole. 00:14:03.97\00:14:08.54 There are millions in this world 00:14:14.92\00:14:18.59 who are seeking 00:14:18.79\00:14:22.12 for pleasures 00:14:23.12\00:14:25.99 earthly things afford. 00:14:26.39\00:14:29.66 But none 00:14:31.23\00:14:33.13 can match the wondrous treasure 00:14:33.34\00:14:38.41 that I find 00:14:39.07\00:14:41.04 in Jesus Christ my Lord. 00:14:41.44\00:14:46.58 So my children, if the things 00:14:57.36\00:15:01.00 this world gave you 00:15:01.20\00:15:04.37 leaves hungers 00:15:05.13\00:15:07.70 that won't pass away 00:15:07.90\00:15:11.74 my blessed Lord 00:15:13.38\00:15:15.78 will come and save you 00:15:15.98\00:15:19.51 if you kneel to Him 00:15:20.02\00:15:23.52 and humbly pray. 00:15:23.72\00:15:27.36 Fill my cup, Lord. 00:15:27.56\00:15:30.29 I lift it up, Lord. 00:15:30.86\00:15:34.80 Come and quench 00:15:35.20\00:15:37.07 this thirsting of my soul. 00:15:37.47\00:15:42.20 Bread of Heaven, 00:15:42.40\00:15:45.11 feed me till I want no more. 00:15:45.64\00:15:51.61 Fill my cup, 00:15:54.42\00:15:56.08 fill it up 00:15:56.48\00:15:58.15 and make me whole... 00:15:58.35\00:16:03.63 fill my cup, 00:16:03.83\00:16:06.46 fill it up 00:16:07.23\00:16:09.10 and make me 00:16:09.30\00:16:12.20 whole. 00:16:13.13\00:16:19.07 Thank you so much. A beautiful song. 00:16:34.16\00:16:36.19 We all need the Lord to fill our cup. Um-hmm. 00:16:36.59\00:16:40.56 And when the Lord fills our cup, you'll know 00:16:40.76\00:16:43.43 that you have no need. Much to share. That's right. 00:16:43.63\00:16:47.07 Well we are here to talk about the SDA Encyclopedia. 00:16:47.27\00:16:51.64 I'm excited about this. 00:16:51.84\00:16:53.17 And the question is: what in the world 00:16:53.21\00:16:56.18 is the SDA Encyclopedia? 00:16:56.38\00:16:58.51 Well the original SDA Encyclopedia 00:16:58.91\00:17:01.78 was published in 1966. 00:17:01.98\00:17:03.72 And it has been... It was revised again in 1975 00:17:05.02\00:17:08.82 and 1996, but it hasn't been revised 00:17:09.02\00:17:12.09 for a very long time. And the General Conference 00:17:12.29\00:17:15.60 officers, the President, Elder Wilson, 00:17:15.80\00:17:18.60 looked at it and said: "We need an up-to-date encyclopedia. " 00:17:18.80\00:17:21.07 My regular job is Director of Archives, Statistics, & Research 00:17:21.27\00:17:26.31 and so Elder Wilson said: 00:17:26.51\00:17:29.84 "You're archive... it's history and research. 00:17:30.05\00:17:32.21 We'll task you with creating a new encyclopedia. " 00:17:32.41\00:17:35.18 And I think originally he probably just thought of 00:17:35.58\00:17:37.69 a third edition. But as we looked at it 00:17:37.89\00:17:42.66 we realized there was a need for something completely new. 00:17:42.86\00:17:45.29 And so that's why the name has changed. 00:17:45.49\00:17:47.33 It's the Encyclopedia of Seventh-day Adventists 00:17:47.53\00:17:49.80 or ESDA as we refer to it 00:17:50.00\00:17:52.17 and that signals that it's an entirely new work. 00:17:53.47\00:17:56.37 Every article that was in the old encyclopedia 00:17:56.57\00:17:58.91 will be in the new encyclopedia - OK - 00:17:59.11\00:18:01.71 but the articles have been written afresh 00:18:01.91\00:18:04.18 and anew based on new research - 00:18:04.38\00:18:06.28 OK - and also written by people from around the world. 00:18:06.48\00:18:08.82 Excellent... excellent. 00:18:09.02\00:18:10.42 So what is the difference between the encyclopedia 00:18:10.82\00:18:14.82 we've had before? Right. 00:18:15.02\00:18:17.06 So the old encyclopedia came out initially in one volume. 00:18:17.26\00:18:21.76 And if any of your viewers have the SDA Bible Commentary set 00:18:21.96\00:18:26.77 they will have it on their shelves, red & green volumes. 00:18:26.97\00:18:29.60 Uh-huh. The second revised edition 00:18:29.80\00:18:32.61 that came out in 1996 came out in two volumes 00:18:32.81\00:18:35.44 because it had been extended. 00:18:35.64\00:18:36.98 And that's a brownish, sort of black version. 00:18:37.08\00:18:39.55 Some of the people will have that on their shelves. 00:18:39.75\00:18:41.72 I have the old red and green version which I inherited 00:18:41.92\00:18:44.25 from my late father, so that sits on my shelves. 00:18:44.45\00:18:47.22 That was print. As I said, the new one 00:18:48.06\00:18:50.69 has been com... It's still in progress - 00:18:50.89\00:18:53.43 right - but it's completely written afresh 00:18:53.63\00:18:56.46 but also it's not print... it's available online. 00:18:56.67\00:18:59.33 Online. It lives online. 00:18:59.53\00:19:01.17 Now eventually there may be a print edition 00:19:01.37\00:19:03.37 but the authoritative text will be online. 00:19:04.84\00:19:08.31 Why? Because it means it can be constantly updated 00:19:08.51\00:19:11.51 and it can be revised and corrected. And your viewers 00:19:11.71\00:19:14.58 can see on screen now - right - some information about 00:19:14.78\00:19:17.09 the ESDA... about the number of articles. 00:19:17.29\00:19:20.16 And one of the great things about it 00:19:20.56\00:19:23.09 is the number of photographs. 00:19:23.29\00:19:24.89 We have 10,000 photographs. Wow! Marvelous! 00:19:25.09\00:19:28.13 We love photographs! And most of them are ones 00:19:28.33\00:19:30.93 people will never have seen. 00:19:31.13\00:19:32.47 And the key thing is that it's online. 00:19:32.83\00:19:35.27 You can see the search window and the results of a typical 00:19:35.47\00:19:39.14 search coming up now. 00:19:39.34\00:19:40.78 It's very easy to search. We can talk about that later 00:19:41.14\00:19:44.08 and it brings out wonderful articles and these photographs. 00:19:44.48\00:19:48.02 You know, there's a few photographs that every Adventist 00:19:48.22\00:19:50.65 is familiar with. Yes. Ones of James and Ellen White. 00:19:50.85\00:19:52.89 Yes. Maybe John N. Andrews and Uriah Smith. 00:19:53.09\00:19:56.16 These are photographs that have been supplied by families - 00:19:56.36\00:20:00.10 OK - by institutions... for articles about institutions. 00:20:00.30\00:20:04.83 These are photographs that nobody other than the families 00:20:05.23\00:20:07.77 themselves perhaps have ever seen. 00:20:07.97\00:20:09.40 So they're extraordinary images, and most articles - 00:20:09.60\00:20:13.27 most biography's - have got photographs. 00:20:13.48\00:20:15.38 We're very pleased about that. And as I say, 00:20:15.58\00:20:17.45 10,000 photos currently... 3,500 articles. 00:20:17.65\00:20:21.82 We're aiming eventually to have 7,000 articles. 00:20:22.02\00:20:25.52 But there are 3,500 on the website, so that's... 00:20:25.92\00:20:28.82 that's a good chunk of material, more than anyone can read 00:20:29.02\00:20:31.53 in an afternoon. That's right! 00:20:31.73\00:20:33.60 Yes indeed! So it's possible to "surf" it 00:20:33.80\00:20:37.50 or to search it in a very focused way. 00:20:37.70\00:20:40.30 But I have to say one of the pleasures of looking at it 00:20:40.50\00:20:44.44 is to look at the photos. Yes! 00:20:44.64\00:20:46.54 And sometimes especially articles about famous people 00:20:46.94\00:20:49.54 and say: "Wow! Here's a photo of them that I don't recognize 00:20:49.74\00:20:54.28 because it's taken when they were young. " 00:20:54.48\00:20:56.05 And again, only the family - perhaps - has seen it. Yes! 00:20:56.25\00:20:59.05 Yes Idalia? We have contributors - 00:20:59.82\00:21:01.99 some family members that supplied some pictures - 00:21:02.19\00:21:05.53 but who else has contributed to the ESDA? 00:21:05.73\00:21:08.90 Yes. Well I would like to say that this is also a new feature 00:21:09.10\00:21:13.00 of the new encyclopedia. The team that works 00:21:13.20\00:21:16.17 on the encyclopedia is an international team. 00:21:16.37\00:21:19.27 Currently there are over 1,500 authors 00:21:20.58\00:21:24.48 worldwide who contributed articles. 00:21:24.68\00:21:27.12 And we have an editorial team of about 50 editors - 00:21:27.52\00:21:31.72 excellent - coming from all the 13 world divisions, 00:21:31.92\00:21:35.06 the General Conference attached union mission fields, 00:21:35.26\00:21:39.89 and of course the General Conference. 00:21:40.10\00:21:42.46 So it's a very diverse team 00:21:42.66\00:21:45.33 unlike with the previous we call it "old encyclopedia. " 00:21:45.53\00:21:50.14 Yes. The old SDA encyclopedia 00:21:50.34\00:21:52.34 was produced by a relatively small team 00:21:52.54\00:21:54.84 working at the old Review & Herald Publishing Association 00:21:55.04\00:21:58.25 based at the church headquarters 00:21:58.45\00:22:00.45 produced in the late 50's and early 60's. 00:22:00.65\00:22:02.98 And so it really reflected just the American church 00:22:03.18\00:22:06.62 with a little bit of European influence - Oh - 00:22:06.82\00:22:08.49 because one the team was British. 00:22:08.69\00:22:10.86 And that's not the church of today. 00:22:11.76\00:22:13.50 That was the church of the 1960's. 00:22:13.70\00:22:15.40 It was one in which still North America had the largest 00:22:15.60\00:22:21.10 single membership of any division. 00:22:21.30\00:22:22.90 But that's not the world church today. 00:22:23.30\00:22:24.94 And so we wanted an encyclopedia that would reflect 00:22:25.14\00:22:27.68 the diversity of the church. Wonderful! 00:22:27.88\00:22:29.88 And so we have those editors as Dragoslava described 00:22:30.08\00:22:33.45 who are around the world. Why? Because 00:22:33.65\00:22:35.95 they know who to ask. 00:22:36.15\00:22:37.59 They may know the one person who has made the history 00:22:37.79\00:22:41.32 of the church in Luzon in the Philippines his passion 00:22:41.52\00:22:44.69 or the one person who has made the history of the church 00:22:44.89\00:22:46.90 in the Dominican Republic - yes - her passion. 00:22:47.10\00:22:49.96 And so they can get local people who are experts. 00:22:50.17\00:22:53.07 And that's why we have 1,500 authors as Dragoslava said 00:22:53.27\00:22:57.57 worldwide which means we're getting an authentic 00:22:57.77\00:23:00.41 account of the church's history. Excellent! That's practically 00:23:00.61\00:23:03.81 answers my question. This is a MASSIVE undertaking. 00:23:04.01\00:23:06.48 The question was: How do you ensure that you have 00:23:06.68\00:23:10.22 an accurate picture? How do you? The accuracy... 00:23:10.42\00:23:13.42 that this is what actually, is true and factual? 00:23:13.62\00:23:17.73 Yes. We have very strict 00:23:17.93\00:23:21.33 quality control measures in place. 00:23:21.73\00:23:24.47 All articles are signed. 00:23:25.13\00:23:27.07 They have endnotes and sources so people can verify 00:23:27.27\00:23:31.24 the sources of information 00:23:31.44\00:23:33.48 and also all of our articles are peer-reviewed 00:23:33.68\00:23:36.31 by several peer reviewers depending on the topic. 00:23:36.81\00:23:40.22 For some types of articles like for example the history 00:23:40.42\00:23:43.92 of theology articles which are about our beliefs 00:23:44.12\00:23:47.49 and the way they developed we have a special committee 00:23:47.69\00:23:51.43 of theologians and historians who review these articles. 00:23:51.63\00:23:56.53 To make sure that we get it right 00:23:56.73\00:23:58.70 because obviously articles on our doctrines 00:23:58.90\00:24:00.64 have to be gotten right. 00:24:01.80\00:24:03.24 Yes. And so that's why we have an extra level 00:24:03.44\00:24:06.01 of quality assurance for them. 00:24:06.21\00:24:08.68 But we also for important articles 00:24:09.44\00:24:12.31 church leaders also review them 00:24:12.51\00:24:14.48 because we want this to be faith-affirming. 00:24:14.68\00:24:16.25 We want it to be truthful. Yes. 00:24:16.45\00:24:18.09 And that's important to note because we haven't always 00:24:18.29\00:24:21.06 done things successfully or ethically. 00:24:21.26\00:24:24.59 There have been... we're a human organization. 00:24:24.79\00:24:28.06 And so we have to be truthful and accurate 00:24:28.26\00:24:31.07 but we also want it to be faith-affirming. 00:24:31.27\00:24:33.54 So all of these measures go into it to ensure that 00:24:33.74\00:24:37.21 it is accurate and truthful and that it represents 00:24:37.41\00:24:41.38 not just one part of the church's views. 00:24:41.58\00:24:44.45 Say the view just of European missionaries - right - 00:24:44.65\00:24:48.28 who went to certain African countries. 00:24:48.68\00:24:50.05 We want it to reflect the local point of view 00:24:50.25\00:24:52.42 but we also want it to be faith-affirming. 00:24:52.62\00:24:54.46 That's wonderful! I like that: faith-affirming. 00:24:54.66\00:24:57.46 You know, there are people searching for information 00:24:57.86\00:25:00.93 and a lot of people are familiar with something 00:25:01.13\00:25:05.13 that starts with the letter W: Wiki-something. 00:25:05.33\00:25:07.97 There are stories there about the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:25:08.17\00:25:11.77 but this is a more "get it from the source" 00:25:11.97\00:25:16.04 information. Right. The problem with Wikipedia... 00:25:16.24\00:25:19.98 It's a wonderful resource 00:25:20.38\00:25:23.02 and I think everybody uses it. 00:25:23.22\00:25:24.55 But it's written by somebody who has a particular desire 00:25:24.75\00:25:28.92 to write on the topic. Yes. 00:25:29.12\00:25:30.46 And that means that they're not reliable; they're not accurate. 00:25:30.49\00:25:33.66 And indeed, as Dr. Santrac discovered when she first 00:25:34.06\00:25:38.17 became interested in joining the project 00:25:38.37\00:25:40.07 often they're notably inaccurate. 00:25:40.27\00:25:44.27 You might want to share about your experience. 00:25:44.47\00:25:47.04 Yes. Well actually that was my daughter's experience 00:25:47.24\00:25:50.08 who wanted to do a research project for her high school 00:25:50.28\00:25:54.48 class. They were asked to choose an American group 00:25:54.68\00:25:58.02 and write a history, etc. 00:25:58.22\00:26:01.06 So she said: "Well, this is a good chance to 00:26:01.26\00:26:03.49 present to my class and my teachers something about 00:26:03.69\00:26:06.49 our church. " And the teacher asked that the research is 00:26:06.70\00:26:11.00 solely based on online sources. 00:26:11.20\00:26:14.54 So when you Google what you find. 00:26:14.74\00:26:16.60 And after some time she came to me with a whole list. 00:26:16.81\00:26:20.08 "Mom, did you know about this? " 00:26:20.28\00:26:21.64 "How can people say something like that? " 00:26:21.84\00:26:24.25 "This is not true! " 00:26:24.45\00:26:25.95 So all of the searches she found it was quite discouraging. 00:26:26.15\00:26:30.12 She just abandoned the topic and found something else. 00:26:30.32\00:26:34.16 And I am thinking: "It is our hope that when people 00:26:34.56\00:26:37.76 Google Adventist church or Adventist people 00:26:37.96\00:26:41.26 that the top result will come from encyclopedia.adventist.org 00:26:41.46\00:26:47.17 so people get reliable balance information. 00:26:47.37\00:26:51.11 Yes! That's right. Yes, because with what's on the Internet 00:26:51.31\00:26:54.28 if somebody who has a particular passion for it 00:26:54.48\00:26:57.71 and sometimes passions can be distorted - yes - 00:26:57.91\00:27:00.12 and so you get all kinds of things 00:27:00.32\00:27:04.09 as Dragoslava's daughter discovered. 00:27:04.29\00:27:06.89 And so... But that's another reason we want to be truthful 00:27:07.96\00:27:10.69 and accurate and that we don't gloss over 00:27:10.89\00:27:12.96 things that maybe some people might find a little embarrassing 00:27:13.16\00:27:17.57 or say: "Should we wash our dirty laundry in public? " 00:27:17.77\00:27:20.44 We want this to be faith affirming for Adventists. 00:27:20.64\00:27:24.67 But for people who are not Seventh-day Adventists 00:27:24.87\00:27:27.24 we want them to be able to say: "Wow! This church is... 00:27:27.44\00:27:31.45 models Christian truthfulness and accuracy. 00:27:31.65\00:27:34.88 It's not hiding anything. " 00:27:35.08\00:27:36.79 Conspiracy. Conspiracy... thank you. 00:27:36.99\00:27:39.29 Yes, Idalia. "Whatever I may have heard from certain people 00:27:39.49\00:27:42.96 about the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:27:43.16\00:27:44.56 here it is. It's being open; it's being honest. " Amen. 00:27:44.76\00:27:47.90 And so we see this as benefitting both SDA's 00:27:49.30\00:27:52.80 and people who are not Seventh-day Adventists. 00:27:53.00\00:27:55.54 And we would like everybody to be able to get that accurate, 00:27:55.74\00:28:00.38 truthful, and balanced - the word you used earlier, John - 00:28:00.58\00:28:03.85 balanced information. Wonderful! This is wonderful 00:28:04.05\00:28:06.41 because there is so much information out there 00:28:06.61\00:28:10.19 but when you have a reliable source of information 00:28:10.39\00:28:15.19 go to the reliable source of information. 00:28:15.39\00:28:17.03 That's right. Go to the SDA Encyclopedia. 00:28:17.23\00:28:19.46 That's right. Yes. Well, it's been live for 2 years now, 00:28:19.66\00:28:23.06 right? How has the response been? 00:28:23.26\00:28:25.13 Well, I say that the readers have been quite enthusiastic. 00:28:26.27\00:28:31.47 People contact us and they want to share 00:28:32.61\00:28:35.58 the photographs they have... the materials: 00:28:35.78\00:28:38.71 placards, documents... historical documents. 00:28:38.91\00:28:41.58 And they are excited sometimes to discover 00:28:41.98\00:28:45.22 the biography of a relative and they tell us: 00:28:45.42\00:28:47.79 "Oh, I've learned something about my grand grandfather 00:28:47.99\00:28:50.63 I've never heard before. " So it's been really reassuring 00:28:50.83\00:28:54.43 and reaffirming of what we are doing. 00:28:54.63\00:28:56.80 Yes. We've had more than 28,000 unique visitors 00:28:57.00\00:29:01.80 last month - wonderful! which is... we still want 00:29:02.00\00:29:05.41 more people to know about the encyclopedia. 00:29:05.61\00:29:08.08 Yes. That's one reason we're glad to be with you: 00:29:08.28\00:29:11.81 to get the word out; let more people know about it. 00:29:12.01\00:29:16.45 As Dragoslava said, we've had a good response 00:29:17.42\00:29:20.16 not only in an increase in the number of unique visitors 00:29:20.36\00:29:23.43 each month. And the website by the way is: 00:29:23.63\00:29:25.96 Yes. Um-hmm. So that's quite easy to remember. 00:29:29.13\00:29:31.13 We've been glad to see 00:29:35.10\00:29:37.17 the number of visitors each month increasing 00:29:37.37\00:29:39.57 but as Dragoslava says 00:29:39.77\00:29:41.11 we've also had feedback from readers. 00:29:41.34\00:29:43.48 How many photographs did we start with? 00:29:43.68\00:29:45.35 Was it 6,000 or 7,000? 00:29:45.55\00:29:46.98 When we launched the encyclopedia 00:29:47.18\00:29:49.22 the exact number is 3,700. 00:29:49.42\00:29:52.42 Photos? So you see we've increased by almost three times 00:29:52.62\00:29:55.62 that number. And that's one of the things that people 00:29:55.82\00:29:57.89 who read articles say: "Would you like photos? " 00:29:58.09\00:30:01.46 "I have photographs of this person or of this institution 00:30:01.66\00:30:05.80 in its early days. " Yes. And so we've had the photographs 00:30:06.00\00:30:08.44 have just come flooding in. We've also had other feedback. 00:30:08.64\00:30:11.54 And one of the things that people have noted is how they 00:30:11.74\00:30:13.98 like the fact that the story is told... 00:30:14.18\00:30:18.61 I'm thinking of the church now in parts of Africa 00:30:18.81\00:30:21.25 and Latin America... that the story is being told 00:30:21.45\00:30:23.95 from their point of view. Yes. Oh... very good. 00:30:24.15\00:30:27.06 In the past, the story would always be about the European 00:30:27.26\00:30:29.86 or American missionaries who came. 00:30:30.06\00:30:31.83 Now missionaries are wonderful. As I said, my parents are 00:30:32.03\00:30:34.86 missionaries. Because I'm British I'm actually 00:30:35.06\00:30:37.97 a missionary to America you might say. Yes! 00:30:38.17\00:30:40.07 This is true! This is true! 00:30:40.27\00:30:41.64 So missionaries are wonderful and indeed 00:30:42.64\00:30:45.27 Adventists around the world don't wish to forget 00:30:45.47\00:30:48.64 missionaries. On the contrary, in parts of Africa 00:30:48.84\00:30:51.91 for example they are naming new institutions 00:30:52.11\00:30:55.25 after early missionaries of more than 100 years ago. 00:30:55.45\00:30:57.89 So they want to honor them. But though the Adventist message 00:30:58.09\00:31:02.89 wouldn't have taken off without the missionaries 00:31:03.09\00:31:05.29 the story is bigger than the missionaries 00:31:05.49\00:31:07.76 because the missionaries only planted the seed. 00:31:07.96\00:31:10.07 Yes! In every part of the world it was local people - 00:31:10.27\00:31:13.34 local colporteurs and literature evangelists 00:31:13.54\00:31:15.67 and local pastors - who were inspired that they went out 00:31:15.87\00:31:19.67 and did the bulk of the work. That's right. 00:31:19.87\00:31:21.48 And so that's where we come to one of the satisfying things. 00:31:21.68\00:31:25.55 As I said, we wanted an encyclopedia that would reflect 00:31:25.75\00:31:28.25 today's church. Yes. 00:31:28.45\00:31:31.82 And you know the difference is profound. 00:31:32.02\00:31:34.72 When the encyclopedia launched in 1966 00:31:34.92\00:31:37.43 there were 1.6 million SDA's. 00:31:37.63\00:31:40.50 In 2015 when it launched 00:31:40.90\00:31:43.40 there were 1.2 million baptisms. Praise the Lord! 00:31:43.60\00:31:47.27 And there were 19.2 million mem- bers which is 12 times as many 00:31:47.47\00:31:52.37 as in 1966. The numbers of unions and conferences increased 00:31:52.57\00:31:56.85 by almost 100 percent... it almost doubled. 00:31:57.05\00:31:59.78 The number of medical instit- tutions since 1970 has increased 00:32:00.95\00:32:06.22 by 500%. 00:32:06.42\00:32:07.96 Wow! So the church is just... it's much bigger. 00:32:08.16\00:32:11.29 It's much more diverse so there's a lot more stories 00:32:11.49\00:32:15.26 that have to be told. 00:32:15.46\00:32:16.80 And that's what we're trying to do 00:32:16.87\00:32:19.03 and it's therefore gratifying to hear feedback 00:32:19.23\00:32:22.70 from readers saying that they appreciate 00:32:22.90\00:32:25.37 the story of the church - say in Nigeria - 00:32:25.57\00:32:28.24 reflecting the contributions that Nigerians rather than 00:32:28.44\00:32:31.38 only of the missionaries who came. 00:32:31.58\00:32:33.68 That's right! You know, this is a resource 00:32:33.88\00:32:35.58 that is good for new Seventh-day Adventists 00:32:35.78\00:32:39.92 and SDAs that have been around for many years. 00:32:40.12\00:32:42.42 I remember sharing either in Sabbath School 00:32:42.62\00:32:45.26 or just talking to people 00:32:45.46\00:32:47.76 and I mentioned something about the history of the SDA church 00:32:47.96\00:32:50.07 and they just: "I didn't know that! " 00:32:50.27\00:32:51.97 And in the Encyclopedia of SDAs you can find information 00:32:52.17\00:32:56.91 that is just marvelous and helps to affirm your faith. 00:32:57.11\00:33:02.28 You were going to say something? Yes. 00:33:02.48\00:33:04.55 I just wanted to briefly mention 00:33:04.75\00:33:06.82 that also we have readers who contact us with some changes 00:33:07.02\00:33:11.72 or corrections. OK... I was going to ask about that. 00:33:11.92\00:33:14.09 And we welcome those as well. 00:33:14.29\00:33:15.62 And having an online format it is very easy 00:33:15.72\00:33:19.89 for us to make edits and changes 00:33:20.10\00:33:22.93 and maybe sometimes add new information 00:33:23.13\00:33:25.33 we were not aware of. 00:33:25.53\00:33:27.07 So that's the beauty of an online format. Yes! 00:33:27.27\00:33:30.37 We didn't have to wait until all 7,000 articles were done. 00:33:30.77\00:33:34.71 We could launch, and simply by launching of course 00:33:34.91\00:33:38.05 provide impetus for more people to get involved. 00:33:38.25\00:33:40.95 And some of those articles that are on the list 00:33:41.15\00:33:43.49 inspired some people to volunteer to write them 00:33:43.69\00:33:46.62 or to e-mail us and say: "I note that you don't have 00:33:46.82\00:33:50.43 even an article planned on this figure. 00:33:50.63\00:33:53.03 I think he or she should be in the encyclopedia. " 00:33:53.23\00:33:55.23 Sometimes you look at it and say: "Well, 00:33:55.43\00:33:57.47 they're important in your life but maybe they're not quite 00:33:57.67\00:34:00.20 worthy of an article. " An article. Yes. 00:34:00.40\00:34:03.00 But other times we say: "Yes, this person had a fascinating 00:34:03.20\00:34:06.34 life... a really wonderful example of faith. 00:34:06.54\00:34:11.25 This person SHOULD BE in the encyclopedia. " 00:34:11.45\00:34:13.92 So that's part of it but also the ability to update & correct. 00:34:14.12\00:34:18.62 So we don't have to wait 10 years or 20 years 00:34:18.82\00:34:21.82 to do a new edition. Another edition... exactly. 00:34:22.02\00:34:24.29 Which we would if it were in print. 00:34:24.49\00:34:25.86 Instead, we can... because mistakes creep in. 00:34:26.06\00:34:29.00 You know, we have the quality assurance processes 00:34:29.20\00:34:32.10 but inevitably little errors creep in. 00:34:32.30\00:34:36.14 Sometimes there's ones that people think are a little more 00:34:36.34\00:34:38.97 major. And we can review them 00:34:39.17\00:34:41.24 and where we say: "Yes, they're right. This is an error. " 00:34:41.44\00:34:46.55 We can make the correction and therefore 00:34:46.75\00:34:49.82 it's always going to be authoritative and up-to-date 00:34:50.02\00:34:53.32 because it's constantly being updated. 00:34:53.52\00:34:55.52 I like that. I'm really excited for all the information 00:34:55.72\00:34:58.63 I've heard thus far, but I think in the short time 00:34:58.83\00:35:01.73 that we have left I think they have so many stories 00:35:01.93\00:35:05.40 to share. Please share some stories with us. 00:35:05.60\00:35:08.40 Yes, well it's very hard to choose I'm sure. 00:35:10.47\00:35:14.68 So perhaps we could talk briefly about the Adventist work 00:35:14.88\00:35:18.78 in Japan? Yes, yes... let's start with that. 00:35:18.98\00:35:21.85 It starts with Wm. Grainger. 00:35:22.05\00:35:25.49 He was the first official missionary to Japan - 00:35:26.52\00:35:29.76 Adventist missionary to Japan. 00:35:29.96\00:35:31.69 Here is his picture. 00:35:31.89\00:35:33.83 Yes. William Grainger was before going to Japan 00:35:34.03\00:35:39.20 for about nine year he was the president 00:35:39.40\00:35:41.97 of Healdsburg College... the forerunner of PUC: 00:35:42.30\00:35:45.51 Pacific Union College. OK. 00:35:45.71\00:35:47.38 And I just marvel at God's providence. 00:35:47.58\00:35:51.41 So he was the president for nine years 00:35:51.61\00:35:54.92 and right at the time when he was replaced in 1894 00:35:55.12\00:35:59.45 his former student from Japan invited him to come 00:36:00.82\00:36:05.29 to Japan and help him spread the word. Yes. 00:36:05.49\00:36:08.23 And so the church decided yes, this is a good time 00:36:08.50\00:36:11.27 to enter Japan. In the late 1890s 00:36:11.47\00:36:13.80 Ellen White is in Australia 00:36:14.00\00:36:15.77 and she is now more aware of the needs of Asia. 00:36:15.97\00:36:19.64 And so Ellen White... The church for its early first years 00:36:19.84\00:36:23.51 we were a reform movement within Protestantism. Um-hmm. 00:36:23.71\00:36:27.05 And from the late 1890's - for the rest of her life 00:36:27.25\00:36:30.29 until her death - Ellen White is saying: "No, we're more than 00:36:30.49\00:36:33.22 a reform movement among Protestants. This message 00:36:33.42\00:36:35.96 has to go to Asia. " To China and India she mentioned. 00:36:36.16\00:36:40.00 And what are China and India? They are strongholds of Hinduism 00:36:40.20\00:36:43.30 of Islam and of Chinese traditional religions. 00:36:43.50\00:36:45.97 So she's saying: "We have to reach people 00:36:46.17\00:36:48.10 of other religions. " So Japan is one of the countries 00:36:48.30\00:36:51.14 that Ellen White had mentioned. And so this opportunity comes 00:36:51.34\00:36:54.14 and Grainger was in middle age. 00:36:54.51\00:36:56.18 Had never lived outside California 00:36:56.38\00:36:58.48 but he accepts the call. 00:36:58.68\00:37:01.55 Yes, and his student Teruhiko Okoshira 00:37:01.75\00:37:05.12 we have his photograph as well. 00:37:05.32\00:37:07.46 He came from a wealthy Japanese family. 00:37:07.66\00:37:10.39 His parents sent him to California to learn English 00:37:10.59\00:37:14.60 and business. And in California 00:37:14.80\00:37:17.30 he was invited to attend a Camp Meeting 00:37:17.50\00:37:22.17 that was held by some people from Healdsburg College. 00:37:22.37\00:37:25.64 That's where he met Professor Grainger 00:37:25.84\00:37:28.24 who invited him to study at the Adventist college. 00:37:28.44\00:37:31.95 He got excited, and the two of them go back to Japan 00:37:32.15\00:37:35.58 and there they open Shiba Japanese-English Bible School. 00:37:35.78\00:37:39.92 So that was the way God works. 00:37:40.12\00:37:43.02 Yet William Grainger also went with his wife. 00:37:43.22\00:37:45.36 Exactly. Often when we tell the stories of the missionaries 00:37:45.56\00:37:50.00 we tell just the story of one person: the man. 00:37:50.20\00:37:52.73 And very often they had family. 00:37:52.93\00:37:54.94 They had children of missionaries as well. 00:37:55.14\00:37:56.91 So in the encyclopedia we try to bring out 00:37:57.11\00:37:59.24 and give details of the families not just of the subject. 00:37:59.44\00:38:01.88 Well, I call that, Sir, divine appointment. 00:38:02.08\00:38:05.58 Exactly! And we actually have a photo 00:38:05.78\00:38:09.25 of Okoshira and his wife. Because she also contributed 00:38:09.45\00:38:14.62 to the mission work in Japan. 00:38:14.82\00:38:17.19 And among the first students of that Japanese-English Bible 00:38:17.39\00:38:21.43 School were two military men 00:38:21.63\00:38:24.17 who came to learn English because of their profession 00:38:24.37\00:38:29.60 but then they accepted the Adventist faith. 00:38:29.80\00:38:33.24 It was Hide Kuniya & Dr. Kawasaki 00:38:33.44\00:38:38.55 who got baptized, and that was the first official 00:38:38.75\00:38:42.55 Adventist baptism in Japan in 1897. 00:38:42.75\00:38:46.89 Now maybe we can see the photo of Kuniya as well. 00:38:47.09\00:38:51.43 The military? The military, yes. 00:38:52.73\00:38:55.23 And people can go to encyclopedia.adventist.org 00:38:55.43\00:38:58.97 and see all the photos. 00:38:59.17\00:39:01.27 But where the story becomes very I would say 00:39:01.47\00:39:06.54 inspirational and maybe even sad 00:39:06.74\00:39:09.88 is that Wm. Grainger died only three yrs. after being in Japan. 00:39:10.08\00:39:15.15 He was struck by a sudden illness and died within weeks. 00:39:15.35\00:39:18.75 But now his students: Okoshira, Kuniya, and Kawasaki 00:39:18.95\00:39:25.43 continued the work... the medical missionary work. 00:39:25.63\00:39:29.23 Opened the sanitarium... so many things. 00:39:29.43\00:39:33.00 An example again is the missionary comes but who takes 00:39:33.20\00:39:34.64 the missionary backs them up, and who makes the work grow 00:39:34.84\00:39:38.61 is local people. That's right! 00:39:38.81\00:39:40.21 You plant the seed and you nurture. 00:39:40.41\00:39:43.51 OK! More stories. There are stories of history. 00:39:43.71\00:39:49.58 Do you have maybe a more recent story 00:39:49.78\00:39:52.32 that are included in the encyclopedia 00:39:52.52\00:39:54.36 that you would like to share? 00:39:54.56\00:39:55.89 Why don't you talk about Brian Dunn? 00:39:56.26\00:39:58.09 Yes. So not all stories are happy stories, 00:39:58.29\00:40:04.27 stories of big success. 00:40:04.47\00:40:06.13 Brian Dunn's story is the story of a missionary 00:40:06.33\00:40:10.64 who very young... We have a photo of him with his wife. 00:40:10.84\00:40:13.51 Brian and his wife Valme. Her name was Valme... yes. 00:40:13.71\00:40:18.65 He was only 25 years old when with his wife in 1965, 00:40:18.85\00:40:24.85 November 1965, they went to the Solomon Islands. 00:40:25.05\00:40:29.49 They were missionary nurses. They were Australians 00:40:29.69\00:40:31.56 and they went as nurses as Dragoslava said. 00:40:31.76\00:40:34.43 Yes. And only after a month 00:40:34.63\00:40:37.20 he was speared on his doorstep. Oh no! Local islanders. 00:40:37.60\00:40:42.37 Local islanders, yes. 00:40:42.57\00:40:44.34 Wow! So the point of the spear protruded from his chest 00:40:44.54\00:40:48.88 and the back of the spear from his back. 00:40:49.08\00:40:51.61 Wow! It took them several days 00:40:51.81\00:40:53.55 to get him to the nearest Adventist hospital. 00:40:53.75\00:40:58.09 But he lived only a few days and he died. 00:40:58.29\00:41:01.92 Here is his tomb... memorial. 00:41:02.12\00:41:06.70 Yes, but his example: although he spent less than a month 00:41:06.90\00:41:10.50 in the mission field his example actually inspired 00:41:10.70\00:41:14.24 many more people to come to the Solomon Islands - wow - 00:41:14.40\00:41:17.97 and continue the mission work. 00:41:18.17\00:41:19.67 What's amazing to me is that his wife 00:41:19.87\00:41:22.58 returned to the mission field only after a few months 00:41:22.78\00:41:25.91 and she worked as a nurse at a leper colony in PNG. 00:41:26.11\00:41:31.02 Wow! Amazing. Yeah, some people would be shattered by that 00:41:31.42\00:41:35.89 but she's: "No... I'm committed to missionary work. " 00:41:36.09\00:41:37.96 And so she went back into the mission field. 00:41:38.16\00:41:40.20 And I can tell you as a boy in Australia 00:41:40.40\00:41:42.43 his story was told. And the moral of the story 00:41:42.63\00:41:47.04 as it were was to say: 00:41:47.24\00:41:49.24 "He has died; who's going to succeed him? 00:41:50.54\00:41:53.31 Who's going to replace him? " Right. 00:41:53.51\00:41:55.01 And that's very often what comes out of stories... 00:41:55.21\00:41:57.81 about the biographies of mis- sionaries in the encyclopedia. 00:41:58.01\00:42:01.18 Because a lot of them do perish. They pass away very quickly 00:42:01.38\00:42:05.29 because they're going to places that have unusual diseases 00:42:05.49\00:42:08.82 for which no cures were known. 00:42:09.02\00:42:10.46 We're talking about the late 19th century 00:42:10.66\00:42:12.96 and early 20th century. 00:42:13.16\00:42:14.50 But when they die they ask for the message to go back 00:42:14.53\00:42:19.17 "Who is going to pick up the flag that I have laid down? " 00:42:19.37\00:42:22.90 Take the torch. That's right. Exactly: take the torch. Yes! 00:42:23.10\00:42:25.44 "I will go. " Somebody has to say: "I will go! " 00:42:25.64\00:42:28.98 It's the Spirit of God that stirs people's hearts 00:42:29.18\00:42:32.38 not to be afraid but to go and continue the work. 00:42:32.58\00:42:36.52 The chosen, the called... and God equips the called. 00:42:36.72\00:42:39.55 Well... Yes... It's not only stories of 00:42:39.75\00:42:43.59 missionaries in the far-flung world. 00:42:43.79\00:42:47.10 There are also stories - biographies - of individuals 00:42:47.30\00:42:50.40 who have been important in North America. 00:42:50.60\00:42:52.23 And of people who... they don't make a huge sacrifice 00:42:52.83\00:42:58.07 as in going to another country or laying down their life 00:42:58.27\00:43:00.68 but they do commit their life to amazing careers of service. 00:43:01.48\00:43:07.42 And one of them is E. E. Cleveland. 00:43:07.88\00:43:09.78 We've got a photograph of him. 00:43:10.19\00:43:12.35 E. E. Cleveland... yes! 00:43:12.55\00:43:14.99 Many of your viewers will be familiar with him. 00:43:15.19\00:43:17.36 One of the most famous Adventist evangelists and that photo is 00:43:17.56\00:43:21.06 probably one that most haven't seen. Many of your viewers 00:43:21.26\00:43:23.90 will remember him when he was older. 00:43:24.10\00:43:25.70 I have never seen that photo until today. 00:43:25.90\00:43:27.64 But this is E. E. Cleveland when he was in his prime, 00:43:28.04\00:43:31.21 when he was starting to launch the series of evangelistic 00:43:31.41\00:43:35.11 campaigns that really transformed the African-American 00:43:35.31\00:43:39.05 SDA church. And beyond African-Americans 00:43:39.25\00:43:41.65 but particularly brought in thousands of African-Americans. 00:43:41.85\00:43:45.69 And so the North American church today in which African-Americans 00:43:45.89\00:43:50.96 are extremely important 00:43:51.16\00:43:52.93 really only dates back to the 1940s and 1950s. 00:43:53.13\00:43:56.36 African-Americans were a small minority 00:43:57.47\00:43:59.97 in the No. American church until then. 00:44:00.17\00:44:02.10 And it's the preaching of E. E. Cleveland. 00:44:02.30\00:44:04.64 We have a photo in fact of one of his evangelistic series. OK. 00:44:04.84\00:44:09.71 Tents? Some may even just be able to see 00:44:09.91\00:44:14.12 the sign says BIG TENT. Big tent. 00:44:14.32\00:44:16.65 THE BIG TENT... exactly. 00:44:16.85\00:44:18.32 And so this is one of his first missions. 00:44:18.52\00:44:20.92 You can see the chairs are packed very close together. 00:44:21.12\00:44:24.26 Hopefully your viewers will see that. 00:44:24.46\00:44:25.99 And so he preached in big tents; 00:44:26.19\00:44:28.26 he preached in halls; he preached in stadiums 00:44:28.46\00:44:30.87 and just had a transformative effect on the North American 00:44:32.17\00:44:36.07 Church and of course inspired many, probably hundreds 00:44:36.27\00:44:39.64 of young men to become pastors and think: "I, too, can be 00:44:39.84\00:44:43.01 an evangelist. I can preach an evangelistic sermon 00:44:43.21\00:44:46.41 and make a difference. " 00:44:46.61\00:44:48.58 So there's information about E. E. Cleveland and many of the 00:44:48.78\00:44:52.42 well known and I'm going to say unknown 00:44:52.62\00:44:55.46 Adventists that have contrib- uted in some way or another 00:44:55.66\00:44:59.76 in the history of the Seventh-day Adventists. 00:44:59.96\00:45:01.96 That's exactly right. And what may be interesting 00:45:02.16\00:45:04.33 to you, John and Idalia, is that we also have 00:45:04.53\00:45:06.77 articles on people who were pioneers of television. 00:45:06.97\00:45:09.50 Wonderful! So for example, we have 00:45:09.70\00:45:11.74 an article on Charles D. Brooks: C. D. Brooks. 00:45:11.94\00:45:14.64 Yes! Also a famous African-American evangelist 00:45:14.84\00:45:18.41 here he is actually preaching an evangelistic sermon 00:45:18.61\00:45:21.65 in his youth. Again, some may remember him 00:45:21.85\00:45:24.02 when he was older. Um-hmm. 00:45:24.22\00:45:25.65 A powerful evangelistic preacher - YES! 00:45:25.85\00:45:28.82 who conducted evangelistic campaigns around the world, 00:45:29.02\00:45:31.96 even in Cairo in the 1960s. 00:45:32.16\00:45:34.26 Today that's impossible to imagine an evangelistic 00:45:34.56\00:45:36.70 series in Cairo BUT... he did it. He did it back then. 00:45:36.90\00:45:41.30 And then of course he moved into television. 00:45:41.50\00:45:44.07 Um-hmm. And the image that we can put on the screen now 00:45:44.27\00:45:48.81 is of course he pioneered the Breath of Life ministry. 00:45:49.01\00:45:52.71 Yes... I remember that picture. And Breath of Life of course 00:45:52.91\00:45:55.55 was one of pioneering Adventist television ministries. 00:45:55.75\00:45:58.45 Um-hmm. And he reached many thousands more people 00:45:58.65\00:46:01.52 through that. Passed away recently. 00:46:01.72\00:46:03.63 And we're very happy to have a wonderful biography of him 00:46:03.83\00:46:06.93 on the encyclopedia. I'm sure you have stories 00:46:07.13\00:46:09.13 of George Vandeman and 00:46:09.33\00:46:11.33 also, the, what's the name? 00:46:11.53\00:46:15.20 I forget his name, for now, but he did the... I forgot the name 00:46:15.40\00:46:20.04 of that series. One of the early Adventist programs as well. 00:46:20.24\00:46:24.45 We've just commissioned an article on Walter Arties 00:46:24.65\00:46:27.22 who has just passed away. 00:46:27.42\00:46:30.79 I should have said one of our rules for the encyclopedia 00:46:30.99\00:46:33.96 is we don't have any articles on living people. 00:46:34.16\00:46:36.39 OK. For various reasons but partly for you need a little... 00:46:36.59\00:46:41.06 you need a little detachment. Yes. 00:46:41.26\00:46:42.66 And so we didn't have one on Walter Arties, 00:46:43.06\00:46:46.47 but he has now passed away 00:46:46.67\00:46:48.00 so we have just commissioned an article on him. 00:46:48.04\00:46:49.94 Of course another pioneer of TV ministry was Faith for Today. 00:46:50.14\00:46:53.78 So that will be coming; that will be added to the website. 00:46:53.98\00:46:58.11 That's the beauty of it being digital! 00:46:58.31\00:47:00.45 That's right! You can keep adding and updating it. 00:47:00.65\00:47:02.55 Well, you know I like a printed book 00:47:02.75\00:47:05.35 that you can hold, but there's also value in 00:47:06.12\00:47:08.72 the digital version, because I can't see a video 00:47:08.92\00:47:11.59 in a book. You have videos also. 00:47:11.79\00:47:15.33 We do! And we hope that we will actually 00:47:15.53\00:47:18.23 have a printed version one day of the encyclopedia 00:47:18.43\00:47:21.74 or at least some volume. But as you mentioned the videos 00:47:21.94\00:47:24.74 we are so very blessed to have video footage of some 00:47:24.94\00:47:28.24 our missionaries. And perhaps now we can show 00:47:28.44\00:47:32.01 the video of Jessie and Leo Halliwell, 00:47:32.21\00:47:36.35 the American missionaries in South America. 00:47:36.55\00:47:39.42 Famously they had mission boats which they took up the Amazon. 00:47:39.62\00:47:42.72 It would take them months to go from the mouth of the Amazon 00:47:42.92\00:47:46.76 into the depths because it was thousands of miles. 00:47:46.96\00:47:50.47 They would go up the little tributaries. 00:47:50.67\00:47:52.20 They would stop and they would do medical work for the people 00:47:52.40\00:47:55.27 who needed it. Millions of people who depended 00:47:55.47\00:47:59.54 actually on them because there were no hospitals. 00:47:59.74\00:48:02.51 The medical care in the Amazon region of Brazil 00:48:02.71\00:48:05.45 was the Adventist church's mission boats. 00:48:05.65\00:48:07.95 Wow! That's fantastic! 00:48:08.35\00:48:09.82 You know, I mentioned a written book. 00:48:10.02\00:48:11.99 Like I said, I like to look. But do you have the 00:48:12.19\00:48:15.06 capability of searching online? Yes. 00:48:15.26\00:48:17.66 You put in key words and you find a list of articles 00:48:17.86\00:48:22.40 and things you can read. So this is... Would you say 00:48:22.60\00:48:25.73 it's easy to use? It's VERY easy to use I would say. 00:48:25.93\00:48:29.24 Very straightforward. When you open the website 00:48:29.44\00:48:33.88 it's very clear what you need to do step by step. 00:48:34.08\00:48:36.78 There's a big search window on the front page of the website. 00:48:36.98\00:48:40.68 And you put in a term. If you put in a name, for example, 00:48:40.88\00:48:44.85 it will bring up at the top any article that exists 00:48:45.05\00:48:48.12 with that name. But then it will bring up 00:48:48.32\00:48:50.46 any article that has that name in it. Excellent! 00:48:50.66\00:48:53.56 So you can start to get some contextual information. 00:48:53.76\00:48:56.87 If there isn't an article yet then you'll find 00:48:57.07\00:49:00.00 at the bottom a list of articles that have been commissioned 00:49:00.20\00:49:03.07 that are still in the process of being written. OK! 00:49:03.27\00:49:05.84 And people are like: What is the website? 00:49:06.04\00:49:08.78 We multitask! We're watching 00:49:12.01\00:49:13.95 but we want to go to the website at the same time. 00:49:14.15\00:49:16.48 Wonderful! Please do that. 00:49:16.69\00:49:18.09 I hope people are on their phones right now 00:49:18.29\00:49:20.52 because the website is designed to be easily used on phones, 00:49:20.72\00:49:24.69 on tablets, as well as websites 00:49:24.89\00:49:26.73 because we know that today the majority of viewers 00:49:26.93\00:49:29.43 readers probably won't go on their laptop or their desktop 00:49:29.63\00:49:32.73 computers. They'll go on a tablet or on a phone. 00:49:32.93\00:49:35.20 And Slava, just tell them a little bit how they can 00:49:35.40\00:49:38.01 filter their search. Yes. So people can also use 00:49:38.21\00:49:40.91 the advanced search option 00:49:41.11\00:49:42.84 where they can browse articles 00:49:43.04\00:49:44.88 by division or country 00:49:45.08\00:49:47.25 or even article category. 00:49:47.45\00:49:49.15 For example, you want to find out 00:49:49.35\00:49:50.69 everything about medical missionaries in China only. 00:49:50.89\00:49:54.86 There is an easy way to do that. 00:49:55.06\00:49:56.86 Or in Inter-America and so on. 00:49:57.06\00:49:59.76 And this is what a printed book can't allow you to do. 00:50:00.16\00:50:03.16 That's right. John, I'm an old-fashioned guy. 00:50:03.37\00:50:05.60 I'm a historian... I love printed books. 00:50:05.80\00:50:07.44 But there's just so much extra capability in this website. 00:50:07.64\00:50:11.27 That's right. And so when we looked at it 00:50:11.47\00:50:15.24 this is why we recommended to Elder Wilson it should be 00:50:15.44\00:50:17.91 an online website. Excellent! And that's the way to go. 00:50:18.11\00:50:20.62 I know the time is running out but I just need to mention 00:50:20.82\00:50:25.02 this since this is an international program. 00:50:25.22\00:50:28.42 People may wonder: "Oh, are articles only in English? 00:50:28.62\00:50:32.09 What for people who are not English speaking? " 00:50:32.29\00:50:35.06 We are very happy to say that we have made some progress 00:50:35.26\00:50:38.93 with this and already have articles available 00:50:39.13\00:50:41.64 in Portuguese, Spanish, Russian, and Korean.
