It's a great opportunity 00:05:25.62\00:05:27.49 to be part of Hartland. 00:05:27.52\00:05:29.19 We have been serving there now for just over 11 years. 00:05:29.96\00:05:34.03 And what inspired us to accept that call, 00:05:34.43\00:05:38.33 to be part of Hartland, is that education work 00:05:38.37\00:05:41.40 training young people to share the everlasting gospel 00:05:41.44\00:05:45.01 in the market place, is what really inspires us in life. 00:05:45.04\00:05:49.14 That's our life calling. 00:05:49.18\00:05:50.51 And Hartland is a college that is combining, actually, 00:05:50.58\00:05:55.82 solid academics with practical training and soul winning. 00:05:55.85\00:05:59.39 This is something that every single student 00:05:59.59\00:06:01.82 has to experience. 00:06:01.86\00:06:03.19 It's not simply an elective. It's part of the structure. 00:06:03.22\00:06:06.36 Soul winning, practical training, 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.53 and solid academics, 00:06:08.56\00:06:09.90 with a clear mission being missionaries. 00:06:10.03\00:06:13.70 ~ Look at the difference between that and other schools. 00:06:13.94\00:06:17.87 You know, some schools, when I went to college, 00:06:18.11\00:06:21.31 which was a long time ago, they just focused 00:06:21.34\00:06:24.41 on academics, really. 00:06:24.45\00:06:25.98 There were some industries at the college, 00:06:26.72\00:06:29.02 but the primary focus was academics. 00:06:29.05\00:06:32.09 I love the idea of being able to have academics 00:06:32.12\00:06:36.93 and the mission, of course, of evangelism. 00:06:36.96\00:06:40.53 And being able to be an entrepreneur. 00:06:40.83\00:06:44.90 So how did that idea come about? 00:06:45.10\00:06:49.44 The idea of blending those three areas? 00:06:49.47\00:06:53.94 How did that happen? 00:06:53.98\00:06:55.31 You know, it was interesting because... 00:06:55.38\00:06:57.61 And we have some slides on this from the campus at Hartland. 00:06:57.65\00:07:03.55 Hartland is like 700 acres. Beautiful place. 00:07:03.59\00:07:07.89 The mansion, of course, that's on the picture. 00:07:09.19\00:07:11.99 Now is that the administrative building? 00:07:12.03\00:07:14.13 That's the administrative building. 00:07:14.33\00:07:16.03 And it has some of the classrooms as well. 00:07:16.06\00:07:20.17 There's other classrooms as well. 00:07:21.14\00:07:23.47 So students love it for the natural environment. 00:07:23.51\00:07:26.54 But really, Hartland really tries to bring together 00:07:26.78\00:07:31.45 these two worlds. 00:07:32.05\00:07:33.38 You know, we have many projects that are trying to 00:07:33.42\00:07:37.49 do missionary training. 00:07:37.52\00:07:39.02 And we have a slide there. 00:07:39.05\00:07:40.39 We show these two, kind of, dichotomies almost, you know, 00:07:40.42\00:07:45.86 where we have the focus on mission. 00:07:45.89\00:07:48.33 There's a lot of projects that really focus on mission, 00:07:48.36\00:07:50.97 and then there's a lot of projects that focus on 00:07:51.00\00:07:53.77 building a skill or a career, you know, 00:07:54.50\00:07:56.64 and getting professional training. 00:07:56.67\00:07:58.64 And so, what we're trying to do at Hartland 00:07:58.74\00:08:00.74 is really trying to blend these two fully together. 00:08:00.78\00:08:03.71 Because the most powerful missionary in the past, 00:08:03.91\00:08:07.58 you know, we know was Paul, right? 00:08:07.68\00:08:12.49 I mean, besides Jesus, of course. 00:08:12.72\00:08:14.06 - Right, of course. ~ Everybody except Jesus. 00:08:14.09\00:08:16.22 ~ Well, Paul, you know. 00:08:16.99\00:08:18.33 But Paul had that combination of his skill, 00:08:18.36\00:08:21.96 his ability, his learning, you know, his academics, 00:08:22.16\00:08:26.10 his professionalism, and at the same time 00:08:26.63\00:08:28.94 that missionary focus. 00:08:28.97\00:08:30.64 So really trying to combine these two together. 00:08:30.67\00:08:34.11 This is what I think Hartland really is trying to combine 00:08:35.14\00:08:40.02 in these four-year programs, you know, of the different majors. 00:08:40.05\00:08:45.02 And all the different majors are part of that. 00:08:45.25\00:08:47.79 And really, the other big component to making 00:08:48.02\00:08:52.76 the concept really holistic or very impactful, 00:08:52.79\00:08:57.73 I think, is that whole entrepreneurial side. 00:08:57.83\00:09:00.74 You know, this training people not just to be employees. 00:09:00.77\00:09:05.77 You know, because the industrial revolution 00:09:06.04\00:09:08.74 really, you know, created these massive industries. 00:09:08.78\00:09:12.28 And they started coming to the universities and saying, 00:09:12.31\00:09:15.82 "Hey, we want, we just want a bunch of thousands of employees 00:09:15.85\00:09:20.12 that can just be on a, you know, on a..." 00:09:20.16\00:09:22.82 ~ Like a treadmill. 00:09:22.86\00:09:24.19 ~ On a treadmill, you know, just doing their thing 00:09:24.23\00:09:26.06 and not thinking too much. 00:09:26.09\00:09:27.80 But this is not, this is not the biblical model. 00:09:28.00\00:09:30.53 The biblical model is to train thinkers, not reflectors. 00:09:30.57\00:09:33.64 And so, we're really trying to train thinkers. 00:09:33.84\00:09:37.94 And so the entrepreneurship side really brings that together. 00:09:38.14\00:09:42.21 It's like leadership, you know. 00:09:42.24\00:09:43.68 We're training people to think for themselves, 00:09:43.71\00:09:45.88 to be leaders, whether they're going to actually 00:09:45.91\00:09:48.38 be a leader in a project or act like a leader, 00:09:49.42\00:09:52.79 you know, or an owner, 00:09:53.02\00:09:54.82 even if they're not the leader, but they contribute. 00:09:55.12\00:09:58.16 They think for the project, they have those skills 00:09:58.19\00:10:01.76 of being thinkers and contributing much more 00:10:01.86\00:10:04.93 heavily to the project. 00:10:04.97\00:10:06.30 You know, that's really a major part. 00:10:06.33\00:10:08.47 But then really, getting those entrepreneurial skills 00:10:08.67\00:10:11.94 in their experience as a student. 00:10:13.61\00:10:16.14 And actually where we got this from was 00:10:16.18\00:10:18.45 none other than Madison College, right? 00:10:18.91\00:10:21.72 - Okay. - From our history, yeah. 00:10:21.75\00:10:25.05 Tell us a little bit about Madison. 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.19 Why Madison? 00:10:27.22\00:10:29.32 ~ So Madison was, of all of our history, you know, 00:10:29.62\00:10:35.13 Madison really stuck out, came out, you know, 00:10:35.16\00:10:38.13 jumped out at us, actually, looking at how we do 00:10:38.63\00:10:42.47 education, for being the first entrepreneurial college 00:10:42.50\00:10:48.78 like training missional entrepreneurs. 00:10:48.81\00:10:50.71 So they had really two sides. 00:10:50.75\00:10:52.08 They had training missionaries; that was like the basis. 00:10:52.11\00:10:54.88 Everything that they were doing was training missionaries. 00:10:54.98\00:10:57.59 But then their unique thing was they were training what they 00:10:57.65\00:11:01.19 called, self-supporting missionaries. 00:11:01.22\00:11:04.39 So all of them going through their college, 00:11:04.43\00:11:08.46 going through their program, four-year program... 00:11:08.50\00:11:10.97 You know, they had like 400-something students there. 00:11:11.97\00:11:15.34 And all of them had to, they weren't even allowed, 00:11:15.50\00:11:19.94 their parents weren't even allowed to pay the tuition 00:11:19.97\00:11:23.35 or pay the full tuition. 00:11:23.38\00:11:24.78 The students had to learn how to do business on the campus. 00:11:24.88\00:11:29.05 They had like over 27 different businesses run on campus 00:11:29.08\00:11:33.66 by students, and the students learned how to do business. 00:11:33.69\00:11:38.13 ~ They learned a practical trade. 00:11:38.23\00:11:40.03 And with that, they were then able to pay their 00:11:40.33\00:11:43.63 college tuition, and learn how to do business, 00:11:43.67\00:11:46.43 and how to go anywhere, you know, anywhere in the world 00:11:46.63\00:11:49.97 to start a project, whatever it was, you know. 00:11:50.14\00:11:53.27 They had plumbing businesses that they learned. 00:11:53.31\00:11:56.11 They learned carpentry businesses, some students. 00:11:56.14\00:11:58.11 You know, from history we know they started a broom factory. 00:11:58.31\00:12:02.58 You know, whatever. 00:12:02.62\00:12:03.95 But they went out into some dark community 00:12:03.99\00:12:06.49 where there was no presence and they just 00:12:06.52\00:12:09.19 started that little business, started helping people 00:12:09.22\00:12:11.46 in their homes, and with that starting churches 00:12:11.49\00:12:14.86 all over the south of North America 00:12:14.90\00:12:18.80 and then international all over the world. 00:12:18.83\00:12:20.94 So it was very amazing, very impactful. 00:12:20.97\00:12:23.44 And we're like, why is nobody doing this? 00:12:23.64\00:12:26.78 It's like, why? This was 100 years ago. 00:12:26.81\00:12:29.18 You know, like, it's time for us to do something like this 00:12:29.21\00:12:33.38 for the 21st century. 00:12:33.58\00:12:35.42 And how applicable is it right now 00:12:35.45\00:12:38.42 at this point in earth's history. 00:12:38.62\00:12:40.66 Because people need to know how to do different things, 00:12:41.52\00:12:46.59 but we also have to get the gospel out. 00:12:46.80\00:12:49.30 And that is an amazing way to do it. 00:12:49.36\00:12:52.37 ~ And let me just jump in here, you know. 00:12:52.40\00:12:53.74 This gets me very excited. 00:12:54.27\00:12:56.00 But you know, I read a study just recently from one of the 00:12:56.10\00:13:00.71 universities here, they did a study that 00:13:00.74\00:13:02.44 over 63% of young people, millennials and Gen Z'ers, 00:13:02.64\00:13:09.38 you know, want to start their own business. 00:13:09.65\00:13:12.95 ~ 63%! - 63% of our young people. 00:13:13.25\00:13:16.39 You know, and I'm like, 00:13:16.59\00:13:17.93 well are we going to just let them go out and 00:13:18.29\00:13:21.20 start their own business and do some worldly something? 00:13:21.23\00:13:25.07 Or are we going to say, hey, let's use that interest, 00:13:25.33\00:13:29.54 that talent, that skill and integrate it 00:13:29.57\00:13:32.97 into the mission work, you know, that we're trying to 00:13:33.01\00:13:35.48 get done here, you know. 00:13:35.51\00:13:36.85 So I'm like, we really need to harness this, 00:13:36.88\00:13:39.65 especially in the 21st century. 00:13:39.68\00:13:41.35 It's much easier to start a business today 00:13:41.38\00:13:43.49 than it was 20 years ago, 00:13:43.79\00:13:45.82 you know, or pre-internet time, right? 00:13:46.02\00:13:48.36 I mean, to start a business, to start a coaching business, 00:13:48.39\00:13:51.59 you know, like our student here, you know, 00:13:51.63\00:13:54.33 it's so much easier because you can just set up a website 00:13:54.36\00:13:57.33 for free, to set up your website, offer your services. 00:13:57.37\00:14:01.34 You know, it's much easier. 00:14:01.44\00:14:03.30 So we really can integrate this much better and give people 00:14:03.34\00:14:07.24 a deeper purpose for doing, not just doing business 00:14:07.31\00:14:11.45 for the sake of making money, but doing business for the 00:14:11.48\00:14:14.25 sake of reaching people, right? 00:14:14.28\00:14:16.08 I mean, that was really the original purpose from the Bible. 00:14:16.12\00:14:18.85 That was the purpose of business. 00:14:19.05\00:14:20.59 It was to bless people with good products and services 00:14:20.62\00:14:24.46 and ministering to their needs, and at the same time 00:14:24.56\00:14:27.60 gain their confidence and tell them about 00:14:27.70\00:14:30.47 the good news of the gospel, you know. 00:14:30.50\00:14:32.53 ~ It's just like, when I think of the Lord, 00:14:32.63\00:14:35.77 there's so many things I think of, one thing is that 00:14:35.80\00:14:38.77 He accomplishes so much with just one move. 00:14:38.81\00:14:41.71 One move accomplishes many things. 00:14:41.94\00:14:44.98 And that's kind of what this is doing. 00:14:45.01\00:14:47.98 One move, going to this school teaches people 00:14:48.18\00:14:51.85 how to be self-supporting, so to speak, and yet 00:14:51.92\00:14:56.19 get the gospel out. 00:14:56.22\00:14:57.56 This is what we're supposed to do, 00:14:57.59\00:14:59.09 at this point in earth's history especially. 00:14:59.13\00:15:01.60 And so, that's what you're doing. 00:15:01.70\00:15:03.43 I love that. 00:15:03.47\00:15:04.80 Sister Ivonne, tell us what you do at Hartland. 00:15:04.83\00:15:07.60 ~ Yes, I'm the Health Outreach Coordinator, 00:15:07.64\00:15:09.74 and I'm an instructor as well. 00:15:09.77\00:15:11.91 And for me, it's so exciting 00:15:12.01\00:15:13.91 to train the students in the classroom, 00:15:14.11\00:15:16.95 and then having the opportunity to go with them to the field 00:15:17.08\00:15:20.62 where now my work is to empower the students to do it. 00:15:20.98\00:15:24.52 Let me give you practical examples. 00:15:24.55\00:15:25.95 We had the amazing opportunity to share 00:15:25.99\00:15:27.89 one month ago at Indianapolis at Pathways to Health 00:15:27.92\00:15:31.09 where 2500 volunteers in the spirit of, you know, 00:15:31.53\00:15:36.13 self-sacrifice spirit and love could get together 00:15:36.16\00:15:40.20 to minister to more than 4000 people. 00:15:40.30\00:15:42.50 And I had the privilege, it's a win-win situation 00:15:42.80\00:15:45.27 when we serve and use the health as 00:15:45.31\00:15:47.54 the right arm of the three angels' messages. 00:15:47.58\00:15:50.58 So taking my students there, I was not the teacher any more. 00:15:50.68\00:15:54.72 I just have to empower them and help them 00:15:54.75\00:15:56.99 so they can do it and be in the front line 00:15:57.02\00:15:59.35 where now they minister themselves. 00:15:59.39\00:16:01.92 And with my experience, I'm behind them to help them; 00:16:01.96\00:16:04.19 pray with people, counsel people. 00:16:04.39\00:16:06.33 Well, Yafet was one of those students. 00:16:06.36\00:16:08.60 And it's just amazing. 00:16:08.80\00:16:10.37 So really what we want at Hartland is to train the 00:16:10.40\00:16:13.80 student in a professional way and then infuse them 00:16:13.84\00:16:17.54 in the mission field in the practice 00:16:17.57\00:16:19.57 when we go out together. 00:16:19.61\00:16:21.01 So by the time they graduate, they have made connections 00:16:21.04\00:16:25.51 with other ministries, and know that we're not 00:16:25.55\00:16:28.75 going to finish the work by ourself, but we need to partner 00:16:28.78\00:16:31.65 with them, with other institutions. 00:16:31.69\00:16:33.86 Where the students know that it's not about 00:16:33.89\00:16:36.02 them, it's about getting together for one purpose: 00:16:36.06\00:16:39.13 and it's just to touch people's lives 00:16:39.33\00:16:41.13 through the health message. 00:16:41.16\00:16:42.50 At least, this is training that I give. 00:16:42.53\00:16:44.77 And just enjoy the process. 00:16:44.80\00:16:47.07 Because the process is just amazing. 00:16:47.10\00:16:48.60 ~ Yes, so the students went to Indianapolis, 00:16:48.64\00:16:52.01 and they had a chance to implement 00:16:52.21\00:16:54.61 what they've been learning. 00:16:54.64\00:16:56.04 To actually see it in motion and practice. 00:16:56.24\00:17:00.85 ~ Yes, they called us from Pathways to lead 00:17:00.88\00:17:04.25 the massage and relaxation area. 00:17:04.45\00:17:07.06 So we were holding a whole section of the mega clinic. 00:17:07.26\00:17:11.29 There were other volunteers as well. 00:17:11.39\00:17:13.93 But oh, it was just a real-life thing. 00:17:13.96\00:17:16.43 ~ That's great, that's great. 00:17:16.50\00:17:18.30 Yafet, you're a student... 00:17:18.33\00:17:19.67 Oh, did you want to say something? 00:17:19.70\00:17:21.04 Yeah, I was going to say, maybe you can also share 00:17:21.07\00:17:22.87 the whole health coaching aspect and the students setting up 00:17:22.90\00:17:27.94 their own businesses doing that too. 00:17:27.98\00:17:31.18 We were praying for this in the capital for years 00:17:32.61\00:17:36.55 seeing how practical tools we can give the students. 00:17:36.58\00:17:39.45 And now we just have our first promotion of 00:17:39.69\00:17:43.06 life and health coaches at Hartland. 00:17:43.09\00:17:45.36 And what we really want is the students, the first year, 00:17:45.53\00:17:49.56 they can be life and health certified coaches. 00:17:49.60\00:17:52.60 Which coaches is something that is very well known today. 00:17:52.63\00:17:55.80 Getting to the practical fields and to the doctor's office. 00:17:55.90\00:17:59.77 A coach can work in different ways. 00:17:59.87\00:18:02.84 So the student, the first year they are at Hartland, 00:18:03.04\00:18:05.81 can be certified so they can begin their own practice. 00:18:06.11\00:18:10.29 So by the time they graduate, they graduate practically 00:18:10.52\00:18:14.52 having a background of ministry through coaching. 00:18:14.56\00:18:17.59 And we are very excited to give the students that opportunity. 00:18:17.63\00:18:20.90 And we just had two days ago the first graduation 00:18:20.93\00:18:23.30 of coaches at Hartland. 00:18:23.33\00:18:24.67 So that program is certified, it's certifying the students. 00:18:24.77\00:18:29.74 Yes, and we partnered... 00:18:29.77\00:18:31.87 As I mentioned before, I believe in partnerships, 00:18:31.91\00:18:34.68 Because if we don't get together to work in the 00:18:34.78\00:18:36.71 same spirit, we're not going to get in. 00:18:36.75\00:18:38.08 The need out there is huge. 00:18:38.11\00:18:40.48 And we need to work together. 00:18:40.52\00:18:41.85 So we partnered with Adventist Christian Coaching Alliance 00:18:41.88\00:18:44.99 and Beautiful Minds Medical. 00:18:45.02\00:18:46.49 So it's just an amazing, an amazing opportunity. 00:18:46.52\00:18:49.02 ~ Oh, that's great. 00:18:49.06\00:18:50.39 Again, that's being so forward-thinking. 00:18:50.43\00:18:54.30 You know, you're looking at, you're identifying the needs 00:18:54.50\00:18:58.67 and then you're meeting those needs. 00:18:58.87\00:19:00.70 And that's amazing. 00:19:00.74\00:19:02.80 You're a student at Hartland? 00:19:02.97\00:19:04.97 Tell us about your experience. 00:19:05.01\00:19:06.51 My experience has been amazing. 00:19:06.54\00:19:08.38 I feel, like, very privileged to be at this august table 00:19:08.58\00:19:11.15 here with all of these people. 00:19:11.18\00:19:12.51 So I'll just add my little two cents. 00:19:12.55\00:19:14.85 Hartland college has been a very practical training for me. 00:19:14.95\00:19:18.22 I'm someone who doesn't really take theory that hard. 00:19:18.92\00:19:22.09 I can take theory quite well, actually. 00:19:22.12\00:19:24.19 But practically, it's difficult for me personally. 00:19:24.23\00:19:27.30 I found just the way I was brought up, and so forth. 00:19:27.76\00:19:30.00 So coming to Hartland, I had the ability 00:19:30.03\00:19:31.87 to put things into practice. 00:19:31.90\00:19:33.23 So I did learn theory for sure, but for me the most valuable 00:19:33.44\00:19:36.64 part of it was how do I actually implement this into my life. 00:19:36.67\00:19:39.57 And so, one example about the wellness center that we 00:19:39.61\00:19:42.61 had and we currently still have, in 2015 my mother 00:19:42.64\00:19:46.82 unfortunately came down with cancer. 00:19:46.85\00:19:48.72 And of course, I was taking the health ministry program. 00:19:48.92\00:19:51.12 And I said, well, why not take advantage of these principles 00:19:51.15\00:19:54.62 that we have and bring her down to Hartland. 00:19:54.66\00:19:56.73 So she actually ended up coming down with the ten-day plan. 00:19:56.76\00:19:59.86 And she lost all kinds of weight and she had many years 00:20:00.06\00:20:03.77 of a sustained victory in that area of her life, 00:20:03.80\00:20:06.90 you know, weight loss and so forth. 00:20:06.94\00:20:08.30 And so, I'm just so thankful for some of those principles. 00:20:08.50\00:20:10.81 You know, hot fomentations, herbology. 00:20:10.84\00:20:13.64 Some of the classes that we take our herbal pharmacology, 00:20:13.98\00:20:16.68 so I love herbalism. 00:20:16.71\00:20:18.38 I'm actually a registered holistic nutritionist, 00:20:18.88\00:20:21.18 so I have the privilege of helping people in that field. 00:20:21.22\00:20:24.55 Preventative nutrition, 00:20:24.92\00:20:26.32 philosophy of Christian education; 00:20:26.62\00:20:28.22 these are all practical things that I learned. 00:20:28.26\00:20:30.03 And I was able to put it into practice in my own business. 00:20:30.29\00:20:33.19 So I started my own business during Covid, of all times. 00:20:33.23\00:20:36.16 ~ Now what is your business? What are you doing? 00:20:36.20\00:20:37.87 ~ My business is a nutritional consultation business. 00:20:38.20\00:20:41.80 ~ But as I was just consulting with people, 00:20:42.47\00:20:44.57 just helping them with their various needs, 00:20:44.61\00:20:46.31 let's say, someone wanted to lose 20 pounds, 00:20:46.34\00:20:48.01 or someone is going through depression, 00:20:48.04\00:20:49.54 or something like this, I would counsel them 00:20:49.58\00:20:51.88 and help them, minister to them using God's plan. 00:20:51.91\00:20:54.75 You know, godly trust, open-air daily, 00:20:54.78\00:20:57.19 exercise, et cetera, et cetera. 00:20:57.82\00:20:59.39 And I noticed something, that a lot of them were struggling with 00:21:00.06\00:21:03.69 some things that, you know, substances. 00:21:03.73\00:21:06.06 For example, caffeine. 00:21:06.09\00:21:07.43 And so, I couldn't help but want to minister to them 00:21:07.56\00:21:11.33 in a practical way. 00:21:11.37\00:21:12.70 And so, it was generating income for sure, 00:21:12.73\00:21:15.17 but my heart was actually to minister to their needs. 00:21:15.20\00:21:17.81 And so, I ended up coming up with one product, 00:21:17.84\00:21:20.94 Better Than Coffee, then I ended up coming up 00:21:21.24\00:21:22.78 with many other products. 00:21:22.81\00:21:24.15 Now I have several different products. 00:21:24.18\00:21:25.51 - Just out of... ~ That you developed? 00:21:25.55\00:21:26.88 Yeah, that I personally manufactured myself. 00:21:26.92\00:21:28.48 - Wow! - It was not intentional 00:21:28.52\00:21:30.92 to start, you know, this avenue of the business. 00:21:30.95\00:21:32.95 It just blossomed naturally, 00:21:32.99\00:21:34.76 because I was actually trying to meet a need. 00:21:35.06\00:21:37.46 And as people got off of those things, they began to 00:21:37.59\00:21:40.33 think more clearly. 00:21:40.36\00:21:41.70 I was able then to give them, I give every one of my 00:21:41.73\00:21:44.60 consultation clients, Ministry of Healing. 00:21:44.97\00:21:47.20 And these are for the most part non-Christian clients. 00:21:47.44\00:21:50.97 These people have, you know, never read the gospels, 00:21:51.01\00:21:53.21 yet they're open to, Ministry of Healing. 00:21:53.24\00:21:55.34 ~ And how do they respond? 00:21:55.38\00:21:56.71 Oh, I mean, you can go on my website and see the testimonies. 00:21:57.08\00:21:59.51 They're amazing. 00:21:59.55\00:22:00.88 These people, they love the fact that 00:22:00.98\00:22:03.69 there's a better way to health without, you know, 00:22:04.09\00:22:06.29 going to such crazy extremes, you know. 00:22:06.32\00:22:08.99 Our message makes sense, it's practical, 00:22:09.32\00:22:11.93 and they are definitely susceptible. 00:22:12.53\00:22:14.53 Every one of them wanted prayer. 00:22:14.63\00:22:16.90 Without exception, every one of them said, 00:22:16.93\00:22:18.70 "Thank you so much for praying for me." 00:22:18.73\00:22:20.24 What I discovered also, a lot of these people 00:22:20.64\00:22:22.34 are just going through emotional turmoil. 00:22:22.37\00:22:24.04 We know that 9 out of 10 diseases starts in the mind. 00:22:24.07\00:22:27.54 And so I actually saw that first hand, and I remember, 00:22:27.58\00:22:29.81 oh wow, okay, this is actually, I'm living this out. 00:22:29.84\00:22:32.15 I see what's happening. 00:22:32.18\00:22:33.52 And I was able to apply those principles 00:22:33.55\00:22:34.88 that I had learned at school as well. 00:22:34.92\00:22:36.25 ~ That is so beautiful. 00:22:36.28\00:22:37.62 So you are an actual graduate 00:22:37.65\00:22:38.99 or are you still a student there? 00:22:39.02\00:22:40.52 ~ I'm soon to be a graduate, but I'm currently finishing 00:22:40.56\00:22:43.29 my degree in Health Ministry there. 00:22:43.32\00:22:45.93 And I was, like Sister Ivonne said, I had the privilege of 00:22:46.53\00:22:49.46 being trained by her. 00:22:49.50\00:22:51.20 She's such a phenomenal trainer. 00:22:51.23\00:22:53.47 And I had the privilege of graduating 00:22:54.10\00:22:56.07 under her class as well. 00:22:56.10\00:22:57.44 And I'm going to use that along in my business, 00:22:57.47\00:23:00.44 in my personal coaching business, 00:23:00.48\00:23:02.01 to help minister and practically reach out 00:23:02.04\00:23:05.08 to the needs of those. 00:23:05.11\00:23:06.45 You know, life and health, what's more important than that? 00:23:06.48\00:23:08.58 ~ Right. - Very, very practical. 00:23:08.62\00:23:10.25 And so I have better ways of how to approach that 00:23:10.55\00:23:13.12 now that I've gone through that training. 00:23:13.36\00:23:14.82 That is so beautiful. 00:23:14.86\00:23:16.19 I mean, this is, you couldn't have a better spokesperson 00:23:16.29\00:23:18.93 than a student. 00:23:18.96\00:23:20.30 ~ In fact, Yafet, you mentioned the herbology class 00:23:20.80\00:23:25.03 that you took at Hartland, herbal pharmacology. 00:23:25.07\00:23:27.20 Were there other classes that you want to mention 00:23:27.24\00:23:29.20 specifically, that helped you develop that mindset 00:23:29.24\00:23:32.34 and set up your business? 00:23:32.37\00:23:33.78 There's so many, I can mention a few. 00:23:35.28\00:23:37.55 Philosophy of Christian Education. 00:23:39.01\00:23:42.08 Believe it or not, you know, that's a class that 00:23:42.48\00:23:45.05 was actually taught by President Restrepo, 00:23:45.09\00:23:47.66 and it was very practical for me because I began to 00:23:47.96\00:23:51.26 see the mindset, that solidified for me the mindset 00:23:51.29\00:23:54.73 of what a true missionary is to be. 00:23:54.93\00:23:57.30 He mentioned earlier already the Waldensians 00:23:57.33\00:24:00.14 and how they would take, you know, different trades, 00:24:00.17\00:24:02.74 and you know, sometimes just slipping in a little 00:24:02.77\00:24:04.87 scripture in their back pocket, or in their handkerchief 00:24:05.27\00:24:09.48 in their coat pocket, and they would minister 00:24:09.51\00:24:11.78 to people spiritually as they began to do, you know, 00:24:11.81\00:24:14.85 practical businesses, whether it be glassware, 00:24:14.88\00:24:16.92 artisanship, or masonry, or what have you. 00:24:16.95\00:24:19.12 So that was something that really helped me to understand, 00:24:19.52\00:24:22.02 you know what, the mindset is, I'm not here to get their money. 00:24:22.22\00:24:25.29 Often times clients come to me and, you know, they say, 00:24:25.33\00:24:28.03 "I don't have the money. Can you still help me?" 00:24:28.06\00:24:29.96 I say, "Of course, I'll be willing to help you." 00:24:30.00\00:24:31.93 It's not about the money. 00:24:31.97\00:24:33.30 It's about being able to reach their heart. 00:24:33.34\00:24:35.30 And that's a part of, you know Christ's method alone. 00:24:35.40\00:24:38.27 You know, once you have their confidence, their trust, 00:24:38.31\00:24:40.38 their faith, it's all synonyms, you're able to then say, 00:24:40.41\00:24:43.01 "Come, follow me." 00:24:43.04\00:24:44.38 And that's the whole goal, the endgame. 00:24:44.41\00:24:46.31 These are all means. 00:24:46.35\00:24:47.68 The business is a means to an end. 00:24:47.72\00:24:49.05 These business firms are to guide us to help them 00:24:49.08\00:24:53.09 to find the Maker of their souls. 00:24:53.36\00:24:55.36 ~ Absolutely. 00:24:55.39\00:24:56.83 That's what's so exciting to me about what you're doing. 00:24:56.93\00:24:59.73 Because you're training people to be able to 00:24:59.76\00:25:04.83 live in the real world, to be able to support themselves, 00:25:04.87\00:25:09.34 but yet, it's all about evangelism. 00:25:09.37\00:25:12.97 The other part is a means to an end, 00:25:13.01\00:25:15.94 which is really interesting. 00:25:15.98\00:25:18.58 So just to piggyback on what he just said, 00:25:18.81\00:25:21.58 you know, this training to become an evangelistic, 00:25:21.82\00:25:26.59 you know, missionary, but being self-supporting 00:25:26.79\00:25:29.89 was the most important thing that Madison did actually 00:25:29.92\00:25:33.73 in our example. 00:25:33.76\00:25:35.10 You know, we have these couple of quotes here 00:25:35.13\00:25:37.10 that I want to share with you. 00:25:37.13\00:25:38.47 And maybe we can just read them together. 00:25:38.97\00:25:41.20 So this was the most important thing that they did, 00:25:49.94\00:25:52.85 was train these people how to become... 00:25:52.88\00:25:55.18 And we wouldn't call it, self-supporting, today. 00:25:55.35\00:25:57.32 That's like a 100-year-old term. 00:25:57.35\00:25:59.15 But we would say, entrepreneurs, you know. 00:25:59.35\00:26:01.99 We train them to be entrepreneurs. 00:26:02.02\00:26:03.89 We train them to be missional entrepreneurs, 00:26:03.93\00:26:06.29 because Madison was focused on mission. 00:26:06.33\00:26:08.13 And the second quote actually really highlights 00:26:08.36\00:26:11.40 that mission part. 00:26:11.43\00:26:12.77 She says... 00:26:12.80\00:26:14.14 So for me, when I read this, I'm like, what! You know? 00:26:34.26\00:26:38.89 We need to train people how to be 00:26:38.93\00:26:41.86 missional entrepreneurs, you know. 00:26:41.90\00:26:44.13 And so, I'm very excited, you know, to see what has already 00:26:44.23\00:26:47.90 really been going on for years at Hartland. 00:26:47.94\00:26:50.17 And I feel like nobody knows about it. 00:26:50.34\00:26:53.44 You know, like, we really need to, like... 00:26:53.48\00:26:55.14 It's like a well-kept secret. 00:26:55.18\00:26:56.51 ~ Exactly, you know. 00:26:56.54\00:26:57.88 ~ It's Adventism's best kept secret, exactly. 00:26:57.91\00:27:00.62 So I really think that we need to get this out there 00:27:00.65\00:27:04.22 because this is how she says the gospel will be 00:27:05.05\00:27:08.79 taken to every nation in a very short period of time. 00:27:09.86\00:27:13.09 Because it's easy, because you're doing business, you know. 00:27:13.29\00:27:15.60 You can set up a business anywhere, right? 00:27:15.63\00:27:17.67 It doesn't matter which country, which place, you know. 00:27:17.70\00:27:20.64 You identify a need, like what he said. 00:27:21.24\00:27:23.14 It's so beautiful. 00:27:23.17\00:27:24.51 Business is about identifying needs in the community 00:27:24.54\00:27:27.48 and then supplying a good solution to solve that need, 00:27:27.51\00:27:30.81 to solve that problem. 00:27:30.85\00:27:32.18 And that is what gains confidence. 00:27:32.21\00:27:34.45 This is Christ's method, you know. 00:27:34.48\00:27:36.08 - Ministering to their needs. ~That's what I was going to say. 00:27:36.12\00:27:37.72 ~ It's gaining their confidence. 00:27:37.82\00:27:39.42 And then once we've done that, like the Waldensians, 00:27:39.62\00:27:42.82 you know, then we can bid them to follow Jesus, you know. 00:27:42.92\00:27:46.19 ~ Exactly, that's what I was going to say. 00:27:46.23\00:27:47.56 That's how Jesus did what He did. 00:27:47.60\00:27:50.03 He met the needs. He met people where they were. 00:27:50.07\00:27:53.30 And that's what you're doing. 00:27:53.57\00:27:55.57 And that's just amazing. 00:27:55.60\00:27:57.11 Now, of course, the academic side of me 00:27:57.14\00:27:59.21 wants to know how does that line up with accreditation though? 00:27:59.41\00:28:03.35 How are you able to be accredited when you're 00:28:03.38\00:28:07.28 doing things differently from the norm? 00:28:07.32\00:28:10.52 So one of the things with accreditation is that 00:28:10.72\00:28:12.99 you have to actually demonstrate that what you're saying 00:28:13.02\00:28:17.33 that you're going to do, actually is happening. 00:28:17.83\00:28:20.40 In other words, the learning outcomes, 00:28:20.43\00:28:23.00 the learning objectives, that these are being reached 00:28:23.23\00:28:26.43 by your students. 00:28:26.47\00:28:27.80 So they hold you accountable to that. 00:28:27.97\00:28:30.37 Therefore, you don't want to over-promise. 00:28:30.41\00:28:32.87 And every student has their strengths, 00:28:33.04\00:28:35.81 has their unique set of skills. 00:28:35.91\00:28:39.31 And we have to match those set of skills with the 00:28:39.35\00:28:43.05 needs out there, and also with the infrastructure 00:28:43.08\00:28:45.62 we have on campus that can help them 00:28:45.65\00:28:47.72 achieve and develop further. 00:28:48.12\00:28:49.62 So I'll give you one concrete example. 00:28:49.66\00:28:51.66 We currently have a student, and he's a pastoral 00:28:52.03\00:28:55.86 evangelism major student. 00:28:55.90\00:28:57.50 A theology student. 00:28:57.53\00:28:58.90 But in his work education, which is part of our curriculum, 00:28:59.90\00:29:04.24 currently, they have twelve hours per week 00:29:04.81\00:29:08.38 of required work education. 00:29:08.41\00:29:09.74 They can put some more hours, but these are the ones 00:29:09.78\00:29:11.98 that are required right now. 00:29:12.01\00:29:13.38 And his workstation is the auto shop, which by the way 00:29:13.48\00:29:17.15 is one of the classes of the core curriculum that 00:29:17.19\00:29:19.62 every single student at Hartland has to take. 00:29:19.65\00:29:22.02 ~ The what shop? 00:29:22.19\00:29:23.53 ~ The auto shop. - Oh the auto. 00:29:23.56\00:29:25.53 ~ So there's a basic auto mechanics class so that, 00:29:25.56\00:29:27.13 you know, they know the basic things, even the ladies. 00:29:27.23\00:29:29.40 If they get, you know, their car is not starting 00:29:29.50\00:29:32.53 or they have to change a tire; those basic things, 00:29:32.57\00:29:34.97 they learn them. 00:29:35.00\00:29:36.34 But this young man, he has skills in that area, 00:29:36.37\00:29:38.64 and he wants to develop them further. 00:29:38.74\00:29:40.74 So what he is proposing now is that he wants to use our 00:29:41.01\00:29:46.58 auto shop, he wants to also service the institutions 00:29:46.61\00:29:49.28 vehicles, but at the same time, part of that work education time 00:29:49.32\00:29:53.36 he can use it to refurbish certain vehicles 00:29:53.39\00:29:57.19 that there's a need for out there in the market, 00:29:57.33\00:29:59.53 and then sell them. 00:29:59.93\00:30:01.26 Basically to have a dealership that he runs 00:30:01.30\00:30:04.03 on our campus and online. 00:30:04.13\00:30:06.07 He advertises it. 00:30:06.10\00:30:07.44 And he has experience doing this. 00:30:07.47\00:30:08.80 So this is his project that he's going to start this fall. 00:30:08.94\00:30:12.44 Because even though his parents can pay for his tuition, 00:30:12.47\00:30:15.34 he wants to take up the challenge of being able to 00:30:15.54\00:30:18.71 pay his way through college now. 00:30:18.75\00:30:21.38 And then when he finishes school, he already has that 00:30:22.28\00:30:24.49 spirit, that entrepreneurial spirit that he is not having to 00:30:24.52\00:30:28.09 wait to be an employee. 00:30:28.12\00:30:29.99 He can now generate funds, he can serve the Lord 00:30:30.19\00:30:32.83 in many capacities. 00:30:32.86\00:30:34.33 ~ That's great. 00:30:34.36\00:30:35.70 So with the state, with the accreditation, 00:30:35.73\00:30:39.67 with the state, does the state recognize Hartland 00:30:39.70\00:30:42.94 as an accredited institution? 00:30:43.24\00:30:45.11 How does that work? 00:30:45.14\00:30:46.47 ~ So currently we're in the transition process. 00:30:46.51\00:30:48.91 Okay. 00:30:48.94\00:30:50.28 We have, Hartland, has operated for many years 00:30:50.31\00:30:53.62 under an exemption as a religious school 00:30:53.65\00:30:56.79 to not be certified by the state. 00:30:56.99\00:30:58.92 And that worked great for Hartland for many years. 00:30:59.22\00:31:01.56 But as we draw now in the 21st century, 00:31:01.76\00:31:04.86 there are certain careers and there are certain skills 00:31:04.89\00:31:07.53 that require licensing. 00:31:07.63\00:31:09.86 So, therefore, this is something that we are updating so that 00:31:10.07\00:31:13.84 our students don't have that challenge. 00:31:13.87\00:31:15.47 And having said that, I also want to add that 00:31:15.90\00:31:18.57 with the entrepreneurial aspect, the accreditation is something 00:31:18.61\00:31:22.94 that is supportive but doesn't become something that is 00:31:22.98\00:31:26.41 so, how could I say, like demanding. 00:31:26.45\00:31:31.69 And the reason is that if you can set up your own business, 00:31:32.02\00:31:34.92 you can be successful wherever you go. 00:31:35.12\00:31:37.33 You're not dependent on certification to be an employee. 00:31:38.13\00:31:42.06 Now we're doing this so that it becomes a win-win. 00:31:42.10\00:31:44.37 You're not dependent on accreditation, 00:31:44.60\00:31:46.43 nonetheless, we're going to offer it to you as well. 00:31:46.47\00:31:49.40 Right, right. I think that's good. 00:31:49.44\00:31:51.21 ~ And really, part of it is, you know, to your question on the 00:31:51.24\00:31:54.98 accreditation is that the accrediting body 00:31:55.01\00:31:57.65 doesn't really tell you this is what you have to do, 00:31:57.68\00:32:01.28 but rather, they are asking, 00:32:01.48\00:32:03.28 "What are you saying you're doing?" 00:32:03.32\00:32:05.32 And then they just hold us accountable 00:32:05.49\00:32:07.59 for what we are saying that we're doing. 00:32:07.62\00:32:10.03 So we say we're going to train our students 00:32:10.06\00:32:13.33 for entrepreneurship, then they're going to come and check 00:32:13.36\00:32:18.33 whether we're really training them in 00:32:18.37\00:32:19.70 entrepreneurship or not, you know. 00:32:19.73\00:32:21.14 So that's kind of, it's just a quality control 00:32:21.24\00:32:24.11 body that nobody can fumble around and say 00:32:24.41\00:32:28.18 they're doing something when they're not 00:32:28.21\00:32:29.54 doing anything, et cetera. 00:32:29.58\00:32:30.91 So that's kind of part of what accreditation really 00:32:30.95\00:32:33.88 kind of helps with. 00:32:35.12\00:32:36.45 So they're not against actually training missionaries, you know. 00:32:36.48\00:32:40.09 They're saying if you're going to train missionaries, 00:32:40.12\00:32:41.92 then let's see what your graduates are 00:32:42.16\00:32:44.46 doing afterwards, you know. 00:32:44.49\00:32:45.83 So it becomes an accountability partner, in a way. 00:32:45.86\00:32:48.96 But we really like that. 00:32:49.96\00:32:51.97 It's not really, the focus of entrepreneurship 00:32:52.00\00:32:55.47 it kind of, you know, de-emphasizes the need for 00:32:55.74\00:33:00.31 accreditation, in a sense. 00:33:00.41\00:33:03.35 You know, not that it's not important, 00:33:03.38\00:33:04.98 We need it, it's kind of a basic, you know, thing. 00:33:05.01\00:33:07.65 But really, like for instance our media students, you know. 00:33:07.68\00:33:11.92 Our media majors, from day one, they learn to set up 00:33:11.95\00:33:17.09 their own website. 00:33:17.13\00:33:18.46 And every skill that they learn in media, whether it's 00:33:18.49\00:33:20.60 photography, or graphic design, or creating, you know, videos, 00:33:20.63\00:33:25.37 documentaries, whatever, they offer these services 00:33:25.40\00:33:28.60 in their own business, you know, their own website. 00:33:28.64\00:33:31.87 ~ And so, they learn how to do these things. 00:33:32.17\00:33:34.34 And in media, I mean, especially like, you know, thinking about 00:33:34.38\00:33:37.41 the 21st century, 100 years ago they were not teaching 00:33:37.45\00:33:40.85 these kinds of skills at Madison, you know. 00:33:40.88\00:33:43.25 But they were, I mean, if you read it, they were actually 00:33:43.28\00:33:46.45 teaching like typewriting and so forth. 00:33:46.49\00:33:48.09 We would translate this into the 21 century 00:33:48.12\00:33:50.56 as software development, media stuff, right. 00:33:50.59\00:33:53.83 But really, like, looking at updating it, you know, 00:33:53.86\00:33:57.90 and how we can be most relevant for this time. 00:33:57.93\00:34:00.70 But at the same time, especially in media, 00:34:00.74\00:34:03.81 you know people are not as concerned about your 00:34:04.11\00:34:07.48 degree in the end as to what your portfolio is 00:34:07.51\00:34:11.65 of what you have done in the past. 00:34:11.68\00:34:13.88 So if, like, our media department is a media 00:34:13.92\00:34:19.49 agency, you know, offering services where students can 00:34:19.52\00:34:22.99 actually do real-life projects on helping other ministries, 00:34:23.02\00:34:27.46 helping other businesses, Adventist businesses, 00:34:27.50\00:34:30.00 you know, to do their websites, to do whatever, 00:34:30.10\00:34:34.20 then they get real-life experience, 00:34:35.04\00:34:36.94 they can put it into their portfolio. 00:34:36.97\00:34:38.61 And then after four years of that, you know, they have 00:34:38.64\00:34:42.74 way more experience than if they go to some, you know, 00:34:42.78\00:34:46.78 theoretical program where at the end of that 00:34:46.98\00:34:49.75 you're saying, "Yeah, I studied media." 00:34:49.78\00:34:51.89 It's like, "So what have you done?" 00:34:51.92\00:34:53.25 You know, like, "Uh..." 00:34:53.29\00:34:54.66 ~ So they have actually stuff that they can share 00:34:55.82\00:34:59.09 what they've been doing for four years, 00:34:59.13\00:35:00.46 and generate income to leave college debt free, you know. 00:35:00.50\00:35:05.17 - That's really part of it. ~ That is really great. 00:35:05.20\00:35:07.87 ~ That's really great. 00:35:07.90\00:35:09.24 ~ There is another aspect that I also want to mention. 00:35:09.27\00:35:12.24 We have a program called, The Lord Send Me, program. 00:35:12.67\00:35:15.91 It's kind of a grant program that we offer to our students 00:35:16.11\00:35:18.91 who feel called to set up a ministry. 00:35:19.31\00:35:21.82 And just last year we had a student who graduated. 00:35:22.25\00:35:26.22 He went back to his home country in Nigeria. 00:35:26.52\00:35:29.02 He was an MT student, he was sponsored through 00:35:29.06\00:35:31.96 a missionary training fund scholarship that we have. 00:35:31.99\00:35:34.56 The commitment is that they go back to their home country 00:35:34.76\00:35:38.87 and do ministry in lieu of that scholarship that they received. 00:35:38.90\00:35:43.24 So he went back. 00:35:43.84\00:35:45.17 One of the classes he took while at Hartland 00:35:45.21\00:35:46.88 was a class that used to be called, 00:35:46.91\00:35:48.94 Principles of Self-Supporting Work. 00:35:48.98\00:35:50.75 Now we have updated that title and we have expanded it. 00:35:50.95\00:35:55.28 We have Mission and Entrepreneurship, 00:35:55.32\00:35:57.09 we have Ministry and Leadership, and so forth. 00:35:57.12\00:35:59.39 We have three classes there that they take the first year, 00:35:59.42\00:36:02.49 the second year, and their junior year. 00:36:02.52\00:36:04.23 And during those classes they have to develop a project. 00:36:04.49\00:36:08.33 A missional entrepreneurship project or some type of 00:36:08.53\00:36:13.20 ministry and business that they would like to apply. 00:36:13.23\00:36:17.31 Some of them say, "Well, I'm not thinking 00:36:17.77\00:36:19.57 of setting up a business." 00:36:19.61\00:36:20.94 Well, how could you help a local church? 00:36:20.98\00:36:23.14 How do you see yourself helping a local 00:36:23.48\00:36:25.11 church with your talents? 00:36:25.15\00:36:26.65 Then do that as your project. 00:36:26.68\00:36:28.35 And they have to develop a business plan. 00:36:28.38\00:36:30.05 So he developed a business plan for an advent family mission. 00:36:30.09\00:36:33.96 He went back, he already started his non-profit, 00:36:34.26\00:36:37.13 and it's running. 00:36:37.66\00:36:38.99 His wife is a seamstress and they're actually doing that, 00:36:39.29\00:36:42.86 because in their country that's something that 00:36:42.90\00:36:45.00 is a need and generates funds. 00:36:45.03\00:36:47.47 And through the Lord Send Me, program we have already 00:36:47.57\00:36:49.97 provided for him $12,000 to start a lifestyle center 00:36:50.01\00:36:53.38 in Nigeria. 00:36:53.41\00:36:54.74 Wow, what a blessing. 00:36:54.78\00:36:56.98 What a blessing. That's amazing. 00:36:57.45\00:36:59.81 And so, he took what he learned at your school 00:37:00.12\00:37:04.32 and is applying it in his country, 00:37:04.35\00:37:07.52 and winning souls for the Lord at the same time. 00:37:07.72\00:37:10.99 ~ Definitely. And we continue to mentor and provide support, 00:37:11.03\00:37:14.56 because the idea is to multiply these centers of influence 00:37:14.66\00:37:18.03 to share the gospel. 00:37:18.13\00:37:19.47 ~ That is beautiful. 00:37:19.50\00:37:20.84 How did you decide to do this? 00:37:20.87\00:37:22.20 How did you personally, how did you decide that you 00:37:22.24\00:37:25.87 wanted to be the president of Hartland? 00:37:25.91\00:37:30.08 I know they chose you, but I mean, why Hartland? 00:37:30.68\00:37:33.52 Why did you chose Hartland? 00:37:33.55\00:37:35.12 Back in 1994, I had the opportunity to 00:37:35.42\00:37:38.55 volunteer at Hartland. 00:37:38.59\00:37:39.92 My wife as well. 00:37:39.95\00:37:41.29 At that time we were still not married. 00:37:41.32\00:37:43.22 We were engaged. 00:37:43.26\00:37:44.59 And when I saw the college, I saw what was being done, 00:37:44.63\00:37:49.53 it ignited a vision of doing the same in South America. 00:37:49.76\00:37:54.24 So we went back, and in the year 1996 00:37:54.50\00:37:58.94 we were donated a piece of property in Colombia 00:37:59.04\00:38:01.74 and we started a school project from scratch. 00:38:01.78\00:38:04.41 The Lord blessed. It grew. 00:38:04.45\00:38:05.78 We had 85 students, we had two vegetarian restaurants, 00:38:05.81\00:38:08.55 a lifestyle center, we had a farm, 00:38:08.75\00:38:11.89 a printing press operation. 00:38:11.92\00:38:13.62 And when we were at our heyday, then we received a phone call 00:38:13.86\00:38:19.33 from Hartland's nominating committee 00:38:19.36\00:38:21.20 if our name could be added to the list. 00:38:21.30\00:38:25.80 And we prayed about it, but we saw that if this is 00:38:26.57\00:38:29.27 God's leading, this will offer us an opportunity 00:38:29.30\00:38:32.44 to take an educational institution that has a 00:38:32.84\00:38:37.18 wider sphere of influence that is in America, 00:38:37.21\00:38:39.58 a land where a lot of people can come, 00:38:39.61\00:38:41.68 where more opportunities are available, 00:38:41.72\00:38:44.22 and really establish a modern version of Madison. 00:38:44.49\00:38:48.56 What we are now calling Madison 2.0. 00:38:48.59\00:38:51.66 So that's where Madison 2.0 comes in. 00:38:52.93\00:38:55.53 Very good, very good. 00:38:57.47\00:38:59.50 And how would you say being there, all of you, how would 00:38:59.60\00:39:04.01 say that being at Hartland has impacted 00:39:04.04\00:39:06.27 you personally, spiritually? 00:39:06.31\00:39:08.41 Well, I'll start with that. 00:39:09.74\00:39:11.18 It has made, it has impacted me spiritually 00:39:11.21\00:39:14.05 in a great way because of constant dependence on God. 00:39:14.08\00:39:17.75 Because coming from 15 years of ministry in South America, 00:39:18.15\00:39:23.29 basically, I had no connections in the United States. 00:39:23.79\00:39:26.03 We had no connections. 00:39:26.06\00:39:27.40 We were coming to a different organization 00:39:27.56\00:39:30.33 from one where we were the founding presidents 00:39:30.53\00:39:33.10 to one where it was already running 00:39:33.13\00:39:35.10 and it's a different organizational culture. 00:39:35.14\00:39:37.91 We were also coming to a ministry that had a certain 00:39:37.94\00:39:41.11 focus, and we wanted to build on their past, 00:39:41.14\00:39:43.85 but then move beyond to face the current challenges 00:39:43.88\00:39:46.68 and open further doors of opportunity for our graduates. 00:39:46.72\00:39:50.12 So this was a major challenge. 00:39:50.22\00:39:52.52 And often I was saying, "Lord, I know this is what 00:39:52.55\00:39:54.99 we have to do, but why me? 00:39:55.02\00:39:57.43 Why us?" 00:39:57.46\00:39:58.79 And it would bring us to our knees to pray, 00:39:58.83\00:40:00.63 "God, we need to see that cloud during the day 00:40:00.83\00:40:04.40 and that pillar of fire during the night." 00:40:04.43\00:40:06.40 And if we see that, then we can continue moving forward. 00:40:06.60\00:40:09.60 And He had led. 00:40:09.64\00:40:10.97 And He has brought together an amazing team of people 00:40:11.01\00:40:14.44 like Jesse, and we could mention many others 00:40:14.54\00:40:16.98 who are now part of our team. 00:40:17.01\00:40:18.48 It's a miracle to have these people who are professionals, 00:40:18.51\00:40:22.02 who are experts in their fields, who have experience, 00:40:22.05\00:40:24.75 and who also have a passion for soul winning. 00:40:24.79\00:40:27.46 Yes. And you have to have both. 00:40:27.49\00:40:29.96 You have to have both. 00:40:30.49\00:40:31.83 It can't be where this is just a job. 00:40:31.86\00:40:36.10 But this is a calling. 00:40:36.46\00:40:37.87 ~ It is a calling. - You are called to do this. 00:40:37.90\00:40:40.54 What about you, sister Ivonne? 00:40:41.10\00:40:42.60 ~ Well, for me, it has been a spiritual 00:40:42.87\00:40:45.84 challenge from the Lord. 00:40:46.88\00:40:48.61 And I personally believe that there is a master plan. 00:40:48.64\00:40:51.58 And the master plan is in the Bible and spirit of prophecy. 00:40:51.91\00:40:55.25 And what has been my joy is to see other people with 00:40:55.28\00:40:58.82 the same vision wanting to put into practice 00:40:58.85\00:41:00.89 what is already done. 00:41:00.92\00:41:02.26 We don't need to make it. It's there. 00:41:02.29\00:41:03.69 Applies today? Absolutely. 00:41:04.33\00:41:06.33 Because the principles of God apply 00:41:06.36\00:41:07.80 from Genesis to Revelation. 00:41:07.83\00:41:09.60 So it's exciting and a spiritual growth process 00:41:09.70\00:41:13.10 where we can see God in His Word and just us being obedient. 00:41:13.13\00:41:17.71 That's not the easy part. 00:41:17.74\00:41:19.21 It requires faith to follow the master plan 00:41:19.77\00:41:22.94 and ask Him for wisdom, because it's not human 00:41:22.98\00:41:25.68 to apply divine principles. 00:41:25.71\00:41:28.25 It has to be in His wisdom. 00:41:28.28\00:41:29.88 So this is exciting, Yvonne. 00:41:29.92\00:41:31.45 ~ Oh, that's so good. That's so good. 00:41:31.49\00:41:33.56 What about you, Jesse? 00:41:33.59\00:41:34.92 So, you know, I started, I grew up in Switzerland. 00:41:35.22\00:41:38.79 I'm from Switzerland. 00:41:38.83\00:41:40.16 But when I was 19, I was called to start 00:41:41.36\00:41:45.67 a ministry in Honduras called, Vida. 00:41:45.70\00:41:48.64 And I was a kid, you know. 00:41:48.97\00:41:51.47 And my co-founder from Honduras, José, 00:41:51.51\00:41:55.01 he was even younger than I was, you know. 00:41:55.04\00:41:57.58 So we were trying to help each other and figure out 00:41:57.61\00:42:00.72 how to avoid as many mistakes as we possibly could. 00:42:00.75\00:42:04.12 But we made, you know, more than enough. 00:42:04.32\00:42:06.76 But that experience was really an amazing experience for me 00:42:08.02\00:42:11.79 because I was young, I had no idea what I was 00:42:11.83\00:42:15.03 getting myself into. 00:42:15.06\00:42:16.40 Suddenly I was, like, trying to figure out how to 00:42:16.43\00:42:18.30 fund 20 missionaries, you know, and how to fundraise, 00:42:18.33\00:42:22.44 and how to generate income, actually. 00:42:22.54\00:42:25.67 It was there that I learned the importance of business 00:42:25.71\00:42:29.94 in sustainability of ministry. 00:42:30.28\00:42:33.08 And actually the ability to reach more people. 00:42:33.11\00:42:35.72 The more scalable our businesses are, 00:42:35.92\00:42:38.85 the customers we have, the more customers, 00:42:38.89\00:42:40.96 the more people you can reach, you know. 00:42:40.99\00:42:42.86 So this is what I really, really realized there. 00:42:42.89\00:42:45.43 And that then, you know, launched me into starting, 00:42:46.19\00:42:49.13 getting more into business. 00:42:49.16\00:42:50.67 We started a translation company, you know, Cross Lingo, 00:42:50.70\00:42:54.44 for Christian translations. 00:42:54.54\00:42:55.87 We did a lot of translations for, like, Amazing Facts, 00:42:55.90\00:42:58.21 and Adventist Review, and these companies. 00:42:58.24\00:43:01.78 And also other Christian, Wycliffe Bible Society, 00:43:01.81\00:43:04.58 and so forth, you know. 00:43:04.61\00:43:05.95 And then we got into, like, a software company, 00:43:05.98\00:43:08.25 and other companies, you know. 00:43:08.28\00:43:09.62 And then I got excited about business. 00:43:09.65\00:43:11.05 And I started doing this, like, trying to integrate 00:43:11.09\00:43:14.26 missional entrepreneurship, mission and entrepreneurship 00:43:14.29\00:43:17.23 together, not for the sake of making money, 00:43:17.26\00:43:20.20 but really for the sake of reaching more people. 00:43:20.23\00:43:22.70 And so, but I felt like somewhat of a loner, you know. 00:43:22.80\00:43:28.80 Just doing it myself. 00:43:29.64\00:43:31.27 And we started a community called, Hyve, 00:43:31.37\00:43:33.71 Hyve International, where we gather Adventist 00:43:33.94\00:43:38.85 missional entrepreneurs into this business directory. 00:43:38.88\00:43:42.58 We gather other people and educate other businesses 00:43:42.62\00:43:46.59 or business people, entrepreneurs, 00:43:46.79\00:43:48.22 on how to do ministry. 00:43:48.26\00:43:49.59 But still feeling like, you know, alone. 00:43:49.62\00:43:52.63 You know, like feeling like I'm just doing this 00:43:52.66\00:43:55.73 and now I'm getting more people involved. 00:43:55.76\00:43:58.47 And that was good. 00:43:58.50\00:43:59.83 But when I met Norbert, and he was sharing 00:43:59.87\00:44:03.20 his vision about Hartland and what he wants to do here, 00:44:03.41\00:44:06.94 and I'm like, this is exactly down my alley, you know. 00:44:07.14\00:44:11.35 This is exactly what I've been thinking and praying about 00:44:11.38\00:44:14.38 for the last 15 years, you know. 00:44:14.42\00:44:16.32 And now he's like, "It's nice for you to just do it yourself, 00:44:16.52\00:44:21.39 but let's train other people to do it systematically. 00:44:21.42\00:44:25.36 And Hartland is the place to do it." 00:44:25.66\00:44:27.30 And so I'm like, you know... 00:44:27.50\00:44:30.20 ~ How long ago was that? 00:44:30.23\00:44:31.60 How can I say no, you know? How can I say no to that? 00:44:31.63\00:44:34.77 - How long ago was that? - That was about a year ago. 00:44:34.80\00:44:39.11 Okay. 00:44:39.14\00:44:40.48 Alright, well you're obviously really passionate about it. 00:44:40.51\00:44:43.45 No, but that's what it takes. 00:44:43.55\00:44:45.88 If you all were just sitting there saying, 00:44:45.91\00:44:48.52 "Yeah, Hartland is a good school." 00:44:48.55\00:44:50.39 You know, I mean, no one would get excited. 00:44:51.02\00:44:54.02 But it's exciting. 00:44:54.06\00:44:55.42 What you're doing, to me is really exciting. 00:44:55.46\00:44:58.13 Because, again, you are getting the gospel out 00:44:58.16\00:45:01.60 and teaching people how... 00:45:01.63\00:45:03.06 You're giving them a way to be self-sustaining. 00:45:03.10\00:45:06.37 self-supporting, and yet getting that gospel out. 00:45:06.40\00:45:09.67 What about you, Yafet? 00:45:09.70\00:45:11.07 You know, it's a hard question, but I'll answer it by saying 00:45:11.94\00:45:14.28 that in a life and health coach class, we were asked, 00:45:14.31\00:45:17.91 if there was one thing that you could change 00:45:17.95\00:45:19.91 in this world that you could do that you had control to do, 00:45:20.15\00:45:23.42 what would it be? 00:45:23.45\00:45:24.79 And my answer is, to help people to understand themselves. 00:45:24.82\00:45:30.09 Yeah, self-knowledge. 00:45:30.49\00:45:31.83 That's the greatest knowledge that we can have. 00:45:31.86\00:45:33.23 And for me personally, I know that's what I've gleaned 00:45:34.23\00:45:37.73 at Hartland College. 00:45:37.77\00:45:39.10 I'm going to be leaving a completely different person 00:45:39.57\00:45:42.84 than what I came as because of a result of, 00:45:42.87\00:45:46.41 as a result of who I realized I needed to become like 00:45:46.71\00:45:51.28 and who I actually was. 00:45:51.31\00:45:52.85 And I'm so thankful. 00:45:52.88\00:45:54.75 It's a humbling experience, for sure. 00:45:55.15\00:45:57.65 But it's actually one that I would never want to go without. 00:45:57.69\00:46:01.86 Because it helped me to realize my great need of Christ 00:46:01.89\00:46:05.69 and the beautiful future that God has for me, 00:46:05.83\00:46:08.46 and for every individual. 00:46:08.50\00:46:09.93 Hartland is just a platform for people 00:46:10.13\00:46:12.60 to recognize who God has called them to be, 00:46:12.80\00:46:15.27 and then to give them that nudge into the future 00:46:15.37\00:46:17.81 that God has for them. 00:46:17.84\00:46:19.17 And I'm very privileged to be able to do that. 00:46:19.21\00:46:21.04 ~ That is beautiful. That is beautiful. 00:46:21.08\00:46:23.38 You have a couple of stories about some students, right? 00:46:23.58\00:46:27.45 ~ Definitely. And I want to kind of bring in here 00:46:27.48\00:46:30.19 a very personal story for us. 00:46:30.22\00:46:32.32 It's also connected with Jesse. 00:46:32.35\00:46:34.96 I'm a PK, a pastor's kid. 00:46:35.26\00:46:37.79 I'm a third generation Seventh-day Adventist 00:46:37.89\00:46:40.06 coming from Colombia South America. 00:46:40.46\00:46:42.46 And one of the challenges you have as a parent as well 00:46:42.66\00:46:46.03 is, how can we give this enthusiasm 00:46:46.07\00:46:50.57 to the next generation to be involved in ministry, 00:46:50.61\00:46:54.24 while at the same time being relevant to what they 00:46:54.44\00:46:56.64 feel is their calling in life. 00:46:56.68\00:46:58.68 And I praise the Lord that our eldest daughter, 00:46:59.31\00:47:02.15 as she went through Hartland College she studied media, 00:47:02.62\00:47:05.65 but when she took the class of self-supporting work, 00:47:05.95\00:47:09.39 as we called it back then, Ministry in Leadership, 00:47:09.42\00:47:11.89 Missional Entrepreneurship, she decided to develop 00:47:11.93\00:47:15.63 a project of how to start a vegetarian restaurant. 00:47:15.66\00:47:18.33 And not only did she develop a business plan, 00:47:19.07\00:47:22.00 but shortly after she graduated, after following her mom's 00:47:22.04\00:47:26.11 and dad's counsel, she worked at a restaurant for 00:47:26.14\00:47:28.44 8 months and then she started her own restaurant 00:47:28.48\00:47:31.18 just 50 minutes away from Hartland and Fredericksburg. 00:47:31.38\00:47:35.35 This was a big, you know, endeavor. 00:47:35.55\00:47:39.42 I tried to encourage, discourage her. 00:47:40.12\00:47:42.72 See, you know that combination. 00:47:42.76\00:47:44.83 Because I knew what that implied. 00:47:45.83\00:47:48.26 But she went forward. 00:47:48.30\00:47:49.63 She was struggling with this, Covid hit, 00:47:49.66\00:47:52.07 it was a big challenge. 00:47:52.10\00:47:53.57 But at that time I reached out to Jesse. 00:47:53.60\00:47:58.04 And Jesse was working with Hyve International, 00:47:58.14\00:48:00.94 this ministry that he started and was mentioning 00:48:00.98\00:48:03.21 with a group of colleagues that were experts in business. 00:48:03.24\00:48:06.55 And they were willing to coach our daughter. 00:48:06.72\00:48:09.45 So she built on the knowledge she received at Hartland 00:48:09.55\00:48:12.35 with business coaching from Hyve. 00:48:12.45\00:48:14.72 And now the Lord has lead her to develop a product 00:48:14.92\00:48:20.10 for which there is a special niche, empanadas, 00:48:20.13\00:48:23.47 and she's doing that in Colorado. 00:48:23.50\00:48:25.40 Her husband works at Eden Valley. 00:48:26.13\00:48:27.87 And it's just amazing to see the whole development. 00:48:27.97\00:48:30.51 But as we saw the result and how God blessed 00:48:30.91\00:48:33.41 and is opening doors for her to do ministry 00:48:33.44\00:48:35.94 and business together, we thought, we need to give this 00:48:36.14\00:48:39.45 opportunity to many other young people. 00:48:39.48\00:48:41.92 And God has given me some talents, but he has given 00:48:42.08\00:48:45.05 Jesse and others great talents, and that's how, 00:48:45.09\00:48:48.12 that was another avenue to bring us together. 00:48:48.16\00:48:50.13 And I'm so thankful to Jesse that he was willing to, 00:48:50.16\00:48:52.29 well let's use this as a platform to bless many other 00:48:52.33\00:48:55.03 young people who have a passion to do something. 00:48:55.06\00:48:57.97 We're going to enable them to do this, and for the Lord. 00:48:58.00\00:49:01.54 ~ Oh, that's beautiful. 00:49:01.57\00:49:02.90 And I'd like for us to put your daughter's picture 00:49:02.94\00:49:05.01 back up there just for a second. 00:49:05.04\00:49:06.47 Is she at the restaurant right there? 00:49:06.51\00:49:08.64 Is that the restaurant? 00:49:08.68\00:49:10.01 So that picture was at the restaurant 00:49:10.05\00:49:12.11 when the project started. 00:49:12.15\00:49:14.88 And now she has, that project migrated 00:49:15.58\00:49:19.12 to an empanada business that sells frozen products 00:49:19.39\00:49:23.99 that are precooked in five different flavors. 00:49:24.03\00:49:26.93 And it's a booming project now in Colorado. 00:49:27.00\00:49:32.43 ~ Wow, I hope you brought us some here today. 00:49:32.53\00:49:34.87 ~ Next time, next time we'll bring you some. 00:49:36.50\00:49:38.21 And we'll bring her as well with us. 00:49:38.24\00:49:39.81 We'll bring her and the empanadas. 00:49:39.84\00:49:41.34 That will be great.
