family and then spent 25 years

pastor in the U.K. and Minnesota
before finally God led us to

Adventist Frontier Missions in
2011 where I've been serving as

the president for the
last 11 years. And it's just an

incredible privilege because
I get to see the Holy Spirit at

I've never heard used in the way

want you to explain the root of

you about demonization?

Well, that's a great question,
Shelley, and we use the word

demonization in the colloquial
way in the west. We say I will

demonize somebody. It means
I make you out to be the worst
00:08:38.01\00:08:40.18
possible of people in society.
But as a missionary, we use the
00:08:40.22\00:08:44.45
word demonization based on how
the New Testament uses the words
00:08:44.49\00:08:48.29
word dimonisai. It's a verb
and it's normally used in the
00:08:48.32\00:08:51.39
passive sense which means to be
demonized. And to be demonized
00:08:51.43\00:08:56.26
in the New Testament, we find
there are basically three levels
00:08:56.30\00:09:00.27
of demonization. The first
is harassment and a good example
00:09:00.30\00:09:05.57
of that as an Adventist familiar
with Revelation 12:17 where
00:09:05.61\00:09:10.05
Satan makes war on the remnant
of God's children. And so Satan
00:09:10.08\00:09:15.48
attacks the children of God in
various ways. And then there is
00:09:15.52\00:09:19.25
oppression and oppression takes
place where maybe through a
00:09:19.29\00:09:23.06
cherished sin you give access to
Satan to control a part of your
00:09:23.09\00:09:27.33
life. And that does happen among
Christians. And then you have
00:09:27.36\00:09:30.73
full on possession and I've
never seen possession among a
00:09:30.77\00:09:34.34
born again Christian, someone
whose life is filled with the
00:09:34.37\00:09:36.77
Holy Spirit. But I have seen
it among Animists, Hindus and

Buddhists many of whom will
consciously invite a spirit to
00:09:40.64\00:09:45.01
possess them. Because the
attraction of the occult whether
00:09:45.05\00:09:48.08
it's in the subcontinent of
India and so forth or whether
00:09:48.12\00:09:51.32
it's in America today is
you gain access to knowledge and
00:09:51.35\00:09:55.06
power but without any moral
accountability for how you use
00:09:55.09\00:09:58.23
it. And so the occult, if
you become a horoscope, reading

horoscopes or palm reading or
fortune telling in the west it

give you money whereas in other
parts of the world it gives you

social power because people
are afraid that you know all of

their secrets and will speak
them out in public. So when we

use the word demonization
as missionaries it's in a very
00:10:15.78\00:10:18.38
specific New Testament way
based on what we see in the New
00:10:18.41\00:10:22.12
Testament and how the
New Testament uses the verb

dimonisai, to be demonized.

Okay, harassment, oppression,
and possession. You don't have
00:10:26.25\00:10:30.99
to worry. If you're filled with
the Holy Spirit, greater is He

who is in you...1 John 4:4...
than he who's in the world.

You don't have to worry
about being possessed but we are

seeing more and more people
who have been through traumatic

events. They believe in Jesus,
they asked God to set them free

but sometimes people hold onto
things so we're going to get

there. But when we think
about...You said you've never

seen anyone in the church,
I'm not saying in the Adventist

church but I have seen someone
who was a "church goer" of
00:11:07.23\00:11:13.03
another demonimation who
believed in Jesus but never
00:11:13.07\00:11:18.07
surrendered to Jesus. And you
know James says even the demons
00:11:18.11\00:11:24.15
believe. So believing in Jesus,
really we've got to be living in
00:11:24.18\00:11:31.35
Jesus. So what causes
demonization? Let's break
00:11:31.39\00:11:37.06
that down. So we've got
harassment, we have oppression
00:11:37.09\00:11:41.56
and we have
possession. So what causes...?
00:11:41.60\00:11:47.97
So there are multiple causes of
demonization that we see in the
00:11:48.00\00:11:51.44
world today. Number one cause
among Christians is having a
00:11:51.47\00:11:55.48
cherished or a private
sin. Some area way you have not
00:11:55.51\00:11:59.41
surrendered to the Lordship of
Jesus Christ in your life and in
00:11:59.45\00:12:04.12
the west the number one cause is
actually, pornography and that
00:12:04.15\00:12:07.82
is a major problem among
Christian men and also among
00:12:07.86\00:12:12.16
Christian women increasingly.
We also see a major cause of
00:12:12.19\00:12:16.46
demonizational harassment is
a history of childhood abuse.
00:12:16.50\00:12:21.10
(Yes) The childhood
abuse can actually fracture the
00:12:21.14\00:12:23.77
personality in a child. It can
also lead to the child's
believing lies about
00:12:23.81\00:12:27.98
itself. An adult will say lies
to a child and they will believe
00:12:28.01\00:12:31.91
those lies and those are
destructive lies and those are
00:12:31.95\00:12:35.05
lies from Satan. And when you
act on the lies of Satan as if
00:12:35.08\00:12:38.62
they are true, they come true in
your life, just as when you act
00:12:38.65\00:12:42.12
on the promises of God they come
true in your life (That's good)

When you also have engagement
with the occult and there are
00:12:45.93\00:12:49.53
many, many people in the
west who are connecting with the
00:12:49.56\00:12:52.73
occult, sometimes intentionally.
Maybe they play with an ouija
00:12:52.77\00:12:56.77
board at a college party. Maybe
they have their horoscope drawn
00:12:56.81\00:13:00.64
up, maybe they have their palms
read by a fortune teller at the
00:13:00.68\00:13:03.85
county fair. But there are other
people who have more intentional
00:13:03.88\00:13:07.65
connection with the occult. So
entry-level occultic activities
00:13:07.68\00:13:12.25
might be ouija boards, tarot
cards, horoscopes. Medium level
00:13:12.29\00:13:16.02
engagement with the occult might
be visiting a medium and having
00:13:16.06\00:13:19.49
a séance and the channeling
of the spirits like we have with
00:13:19.53\00:13:22.93
Saul and the witch of Endor. And
then you have very elite levels
00:13:22.96\00:13:28.14
of occultic activity which is
really the Satanic ritual abuse
00:13:28.17\00:13:31.44
of small children. And the
Satanic ritual abuse of small
00:13:31.47\00:13:35.24
children is the worship of Satan
through the abuse of children
00:13:35.28\00:13:38.25
and destroying them for life.
But in my experience as a pastor
00:13:38.28\00:13:42.95
here in North America, we find
that among many Christians is
00:13:42.98\00:13:46.82
that entry-level of
occultic activity where they've
00:13:46.86\00:13:49.52
unwittingly often allowed
something into their life or
00:13:49.56\00:13:52.99
into their home and they didn't
think anything was serious at
00:13:53.03\00:13:55.76
the time, but from that moment
on there's a shadow in their
00:13:55.80\00:13:58.60
life that they cannot get
rid of. And they know there's a
00:13:58.63\00:14:01.84
shadow but they can't quite put
their finger on it. We also find
00:14:01.87\00:14:05.67
that a lack of forgiveness
can also lead to harassment from
00:14:05.71\00:14:10.08
Satan. So then if you've
experienced a trauma in your
00:14:10.11\00:14:12.55
life from the hands of somebody
else a lack of forgiveness,
00:14:12.58\00:14:15.88
Satan will play on that and
he will direct your thoughts and
00:14:15.92\00:14:20.09
tempt you to think ill will
towards somebody and so the cure
00:14:20.12\00:14:23.89
for that is actually repentance
and confession and forgiveness.

And even if the other person
doesn't know about it because in
00:14:26.90\00:14:30.50
so doing you're closing the door
for Satan to attack you in that
00:14:30.53\00:14:34.60
certain way. And another factor
we see increasingly in America
00:14:34.64\00:14:38.44
today are ancestral spirits.
And with ancestral spirits,
00:14:38.47\00:14:42.11
let's say your grandparent was
a medium or say your maternal
00:14:42.14\00:14:47.22
grandma was a medium and she may
in order to get her power she
00:14:47.25\00:14:52.55
may do a deal with a demon that
says my family line is devoted
00:14:52.59\00:14:56.32
to you from now on. But the
family doesn't know about it.
00:14:56.36\00:14:59.29
And so what happens is the
spirit will often jump from
00:14:59.33\00:15:02.63
generation to generation missing
a generation. So a spirit will
00:15:02.66\00:15:06.33
reveal itself as a familiar
spirit to the grandma but when
00:15:06.37\00:15:09.77
the grandma dies the
spirit will attach itself to the
00:15:09.80\00:15:12.54
granddaughter who has no
knowledge of this who may be in
00:15:12.57\00:15:15.24
a baptized Christian family and
being raised a Christian. And
00:15:15.28\00:15:19.08
then suddenly things start going
profoundly wrong in that young
00:15:19.11\00:15:22.48
lady's life. And so we talk in
the west about cursed families
00:15:22.52\00:15:26.22
like the Kennedys. Some families
everything just seems that can
00:15:26.25\00:15:29.72
go wrong does go wrong. But
when you work in west Africa you
00:15:29.76\00:15:34.46
see very powerfully these
ancestral spirits and people
00:15:34.50\00:15:38.10
will often live in a state
of despair because they believe
00:15:38.13\00:15:41.30
their family's under the control
or the curse of a given spirit.
00:15:41.34\00:15:44.24
And so as we have a more
multicultural society in America
00:15:44.27\00:15:48.24
people are coming in from around
the world and they're bringing
00:15:48.28\00:15:51.35
with them ancestral spirits. And
so in the early church from the
00:15:51.38\00:15:55.62
second to the fourth centuries
because people were coming from
00:15:55.65\00:15:58.02
pagan backgrounds the
church would often have a ritual
00:15:58.05\00:16:01.19
service of deliverance before
they were baptized to make sure
00:16:01.22\00:16:04.29
that they weren't bringing
the garbage of the past into the
00:16:04.33\00:16:08.03
church. We see in Mark chapter
one when Jesus is preaching
00:16:08.06\00:16:12.93
there's a man sitting in
the synagogue with a spirit. And
00:16:12.97\00:16:16.27
he's listening to the preaching.
He's listening to the reading of
00:16:16.30\00:16:19.24
the Torah, he's listening to the
hymns of praise to Jehovah God
00:16:19.27\00:16:22.24
and at the end, he cries out to
Jesus, What have you to do with
00:16:22.28\00:16:25.08
us Jesus Son of the Most
High God. And here you have an
00:16:25.11\00:16:28.05
example of a man with a
spirit sitting in the synagogue
00:16:28.08\00:16:30.55
listening to Jesus and the
spirit doesn't appear to be
00:16:30.59\00:16:34.46
troubled. And so there are many
causes of demonization that we
00:16:34.49\00:16:37.83
find in our world today.
Some are intentional, some are
00:16:37.86\00:16:41.46
unintentional and some
are completely unknown to the
00:16:41.50\00:16:44.17
victims because it may be
an ancestral spirit that has
00:16:44.20\00:16:46.74
attached itself to them.
00:16:46.77\00:16:48.10
You know we've ministered with
people...One family that before
00:16:48.14\00:16:56.04
they became Adventist they
bought their children the whole
00:16:56.08\00:16:59.48
Harry Potter series and they
were playing around with white
00:16:59.51\00:17:02.72
magic thinking it was you know
charms and all these things were
00:17:02.75\00:17:06.59
nothing and then they started
having a lot of problems. And
00:17:06.62\00:17:09.42
then we had a couple, two
doctors, that came down from
00:17:09.46\00:17:13.43
India, and you know what? Two
medical doctors Adventist, never
00:17:13.46\00:17:18.87
had a problem, been married 20
years, and all of a sudden...I'm
00:17:18.90\00:17:23.20
going to say this so don't write
in because this is what happened
00:17:23.24\00:17:27.41
All hell broke loose in their
life. And they came down to
00:17:27.44\00:17:34.15
camp meeting had J.D. and I
pray for them and as we were
00:17:34.18\00:17:38.85
praying in a season of prayer,
all of a sudden I was impressed
00:17:38.89\00:17:44.06
to ask them,
00:17:44.09\00:17:45.43
what have you recently received
from a relative. And her
00:17:45.46\00:17:50.33
grandmother in India had left
her in her will a very expensive
00:17:50.37\00:17:56.50
ring. But the light went
on, remember? It was like, Yeah,
00:17:56.54\00:18:00.84
it's after we
00:18:00.88\00:18:02.74
received that ring into our home
that everything went crazy and
00:18:02.78\00:18:09.45
come to find out the grandmother
was a spiritist. (Yes, Yeah)
00:18:09.48\00:18:12.45
I mean, take it a step further
which brings in kind of you got
00:18:12.49\00:18:18.23
to be kidding is they said that
the bed would move, it would
00:18:18.26\00:18:21.93
bounce around and everything.
Stuff would go flying off of...
00:18:21.96\00:18:25.53
and that is in the western world
especially in a naive western
00:18:25.57\00:18:31.21
world I guess you'd say that
seems like, ah you're kind of
00:18:31.24\00:18:34.94
making this up.
00:18:34.98\00:18:36.31
Well one of Satan's greatest
victories in the west is to make
00:18:36.34\00:18:39.61
people think he's just a figure
of fun. He's a cartoon figure.
00:18:39.65\00:18:42.78
And that is why when people
experience the symptoms of
00:18:42.82\00:18:47.76
demonic attack they are almost
embarrassed to talk to anybody
00:18:47.79\00:18:50.86
about it because they think
people will think I'm crazy.

And so they don't know who
they can open up to about these
00:18:53.36\00:18:56.46
challenges in their lives.
And when I work with people who
00:18:56.50\00:19:00.30
complain of these kind of
symptoms, in the west I use a
00:19:00.34\00:19:03.61
questionnaire that goes to a
very, very personal inventory of
00:19:03.64\00:19:06.98
their past and I have long
ceased to be surprised at how
00:19:07.01\00:19:10.91
many yesses I get from
practicing Christians. There's a
00:19:10.95\00:19:14.98
lot of stuff, junk, in their
past and you might say it this
00:19:15.02\00:19:19.15
way, if you want to get rid
of the rats in your basement you
00:19:19.19\00:19:22.29
first, need to get rid of
the garbage. And if there's no
00:19:22.32\00:19:25.46
garbage the rats have nothing
to feed on. So you can try and
00:19:25.49\00:19:28.00
kill the rats but as long as
there's garbage more rats will
00:19:28.03\00:19:31.53
keep coming. And so part of
deliverance for people who are
00:19:31.57\00:19:35.34
experiencing this kind of
harassment is cleaning up the
00:19:35.37\00:19:38.67
spiritual garbage from the
past and asking forgiveness and
00:19:38.71\00:19:43.14
confession of sins and asking
for the Holy Spirit to seal that
00:19:43.18\00:19:46.82
part of my life so that Satan
no longer has a right to attack
00:19:46.85\00:19:50.42
me in a certain
aspect of my being.
00:19:50.45\00:19:52.42
Once again go through the
difference between harassment,
00:19:52.45\00:19:57.56
oppression and possession.
00:19:57.59\00:19:59.83
Okay so Revelation 12:17 says
Satan was wroth with the woman
00:19:59.86\00:20:04.03
and went off to make war with
the remnant of her children. And
00:20:04.07\00:20:07.24
so we know that Satan attacks
God's children in order to
00:20:07.27\00:20:11.27
discourage them and to destroy
their faith. He wants to drag as
00:20:11.31\00:20:14.21
many as he can to eternal
destruction. And so this might
00:20:14.24\00:20:17.11
mean as simple as if you
have an evangelistic series as a
00:20:17.15\00:20:21.82
pastor the week before, my
computer dies, my car breaks
00:20:21.85\00:20:25.02
down, the roof develops a leak,
my daughter goes to hospital
00:20:25.05\00:20:27.39
with a broken wrist, something
like that, where everything that
00:20:27.42\00:20:30.59
could go wrong in the family
goes wrong and it all happens in
00:20:30.63\00:20:33.73
the three days before an
evangelistic series. And you
00:20:33.76\00:20:37.07
realize that Satan is trying
to distract me and discourage me
00:20:37.10\00:20:40.00
and give me other things to
focus on rather than praying and
00:20:40.04\00:20:43.00
fasting which you do before an
evangelistic series like Elijah
00:20:43.04\00:20:46.98
or John the Baptist.
00:20:47.01\00:20:49.84
May I say one thing? We always
warn people when they come to
00:20:49.88\00:20:52.91
work here. It seems that
people who've never had really
00:20:52.95\00:20:58.32
harassment from the devil, they
make a commitment to come to
00:20:58.35\00:21:01.29
work here and all of a sudden
everything that can go wrong
00:21:01.32\00:21:04.73
goes wrong. (Absolutely) And
they're like what's going on?
00:21:04.76\00:21:08.26
And I always warn
people before we hire them.

That's absolutely true. And
Satan does, he just throws these
00:21:10.43\00:21:14.17
road blocks in your way and
when you realize this is what is
00:21:14.20\00:21:17.71
happening the solution is
to turn to God and ask for
00:21:17.74\00:21:20.84
deliverance. Ask God to rebuke
the attacks of Satan and turn

them back upon him and to turn
what was intended for a curse

into a blessing.

But you know what's so funny,
I can be talking to someone on

the phone, they're sharing their
trouble and I'll be going you're

under spiritual attack. This is
spiritual warfare. You need to

put on the full armor of God.
But you know what, we're slow

sometimes to recognize it in
our own lives. And I had that

experience last year that I had
a very bad week and it was just

like what's going on? And I
finally said to the Lord, What's

wrong with me Lord. And I

in Matthew chapter 16 where from

been repeatedly teaching the

disciples that He's going to go
to Jerusalem, be handed over to

the chief priests and the
Gentiles. He'll be killed. Then

He'll rise again. And this
conflicts with what Peter's
00:33:20.10\00:33:23.70
vision of what the kingdom of
God is all about. And so Peter

takes Jesus aside in verse
22 of Matthew 16 and begins to
00:33:26.80\00:33:30.81
rebuke Jesus. And in the
synoptic gospels, Matthew, Mark

and Luke whenever the verb
rebuke is used its normally

used of Jesus rebuking a spirit.
And so when Peter rebukes Jesus

he's suggesting that Jesus is
speaking under satanic influence

And Jesus turns to Peter and
turns the whole thing around and

Then Peter was allowing Satan to
speak through him in that moment

is a single being. Satan's not

omnipresent. God's not worried
about Satan's power. But when we

mention Satan we're talking
about and his demonic forces

because he has all these fallen
angels that he leads and he can

assign one to you. People talk
about their guardian angel but

that I'm dishonest with my
finances. You know there's a

hold that Satan has
over some aspect of my life.

Like you said earlier,
pornography is probably...

Pornography is the number
one issue that I see in America

today among Christians. And
it's men and women who are both

affected by this and then what
happens is you hear phrases like

of, or I don't know what came

over me, or I found myself
doing something when I'm hungry,

angry, lonely or tired, you know
HALT, H-A-L-T, this is my go-to

self-medication and I hate
it when I find myself doing it.

And then it ends up with acting
out sexually in immoral ways and

that leads to childhood sex
abuse, maybe of minors, adultery

fornication and things like that
And so when we have a cherished

sin in our life or when we
go against the plain teaching of

Jesus Christ, we're allowing
Satan to speak through us and to

take control of that aspect of
our life and so the good news of

the gospel is that Jesus has
never lost a battle with Satan.

When there was war in heaven in
Revelation 12 Satan lost and was

cast out. And when there was
a showdown in the wilderness in

Matthew 4 at the beginning of
Jesus' ministry Satan was driven

away in defeat. And then Jesus
was challenged by the Pharisees

they said it's by the spirit

demons and Jesus said, No

home unless you first tie up the
strong man. And the message is

that in the showdown in the
wilderness Jesus overcame Satan

and from that moment on He would

captives. And then in Gethsemane

resurrection morning He
overcame the power of death.

that at his coming the forces

will be no more human suffering

church is the discernment of
spirits. And so the ability to

discern between a genuine mental
health disorder or a case of

demonization is actually a gift
from God. And so you know I had

a battle with depression about
15 years ago and it was caused

by a traumatic life event.
It led to depression, depression

was caused by internalized anger
and lack of forgiveness. And I

knew what the problem was. The
solution was to forgive and when

I eventually did my depression
lifted. It wasn't that I was

experiencing demonization but
there are common mental health

problems that have nothing to
do with demonization. Anxiety or

panic attacks are two classic
examples. And so we cannot

children. They have multiple
personality disorders, that's a

defensive mechanism to cover the

with a lady in Guinea, West

Africa and she was Muslim and
she didn't have a husband. She

was a young lady and one day a
spirit materialized in front of

her and said I will be your
husband and the deal is you'll

be faithful to me and I'll
provide you all the money you

want. And he said name a price.
So she gave the number of sefa,

money materialized in the road

essentially married to this

And during that time the spirit

has authority over spirits and

So they went to visit some AFM

from a demonic husband for all
