Thank you for joining 00:01:07.80\00:01:11.10 us as you do each and every day. (Danny Shelton) I'm so glad to 00:01:11.13\00:01:13.70 be sitting here today with my great friend and buddy, 00:01:13.74\00:01:17.44 Mr. Tim Parton. 00:01:17.47\00:01:18.81 It's a delight to see you too friend. 00:01:18.84\00:01:20.41 Oh, I'll tell you what. It's been a while since we sat down 00:01:20.44\00:01:23.58 like this to the piano and had the microphone. So today you 00:01:23.61\00:01:29.38 pray for us and we'll pray for you but we're going to do a 00:01:29.42\00:01:32.55 little bit of music and then after we do a song or so here we 00:01:32.59\00:01:35.99 have a special guest today. I almost can't wait till we do it. 00:01:36.02\00:01:39.56 Maybe we'll hurry through the song because we have a special 00:01:39.59\00:01:42.26 guest that you're going to know. 00:01:42.30\00:01:43.63 He's worth waiting for. 00:01:43.67\00:01:45.00 He is and that you'll love and so we're going to be talking 00:01:45.03\00:01:47.94 about gospel music today. So call your friends, your enemies, 00:01:47.97\00:01:51.87 everybody. Tell them, say tune in to 3ABN. It's going to be a 00:01:51.91\00:01:55.94 great program. The reason we know, we've already prayed and 00:01:55.98\00:01:58.58 asked the Holy Spirit for His anointing to be here today. 00:01:58.61\00:02:01.78 So if you're looking for a blessing, you'll find one. 00:02:01.82\00:02:04.02 Now don't necessarily look how good we sing or play or how good 00:02:04.05\00:02:08.36 looking or not we are but if you're looking for a blessing 00:02:08.39\00:02:10.69 I promise you, and you open your heart to God when this program's 00:02:10.73\00:02:15.10 over you'll feel better than you did when we started. How do I 00:02:15.13\00:02:18.10 know? Because I'm expecting that blessing too. 00:02:18.13\00:02:20.30 And you know why? Because I think all of us have encountered 00:02:20.34\00:02:24.44 the goodness of God. I mean I know I have in my life. So I 00:02:24.47\00:02:29.78 think that we all have that in common and we can always look at 00:02:29.81\00:02:34.88 His goodness in our lives and we can sing along and appreciate 00:02:34.92\00:02:38.32 everything and might really appreciate these first two songs 00:02:38.35\00:02:43.39 especially because they talk about God being good and how He 00:02:43.43\00:02:47.06 watches us and cares for us. 00:02:47.10\00:02:50.07 Absolutely. When I was very young my mom used to sing a song 00:02:50.10\00:02:55.64 and you probably know it...Now we want you at home if you know 00:02:55.67\00:02:59.64 these songs sing with us. If you don't just lip-sync and act like 00:02:59.67\00:03:02.78 you know what you're doing. But why don't we do I Trust in God? 00:03:02.81\00:03:06.75 Okay. The Statesmen used to sing 00:09:39.27\00:09:42.74 it. That's one of those old quartets, you know the Statesmen 00:09:42.78\00:09:46.88 Speaking of quartets. Not so very old. You did a great job. 00:09:46.92\00:09:52.49 But gospel music goes back a long way. But I 00:09:52.52\00:09:57.13 look at some of we're 00:09:57.16\00:09:58.49 going to call it the founders of southern gospel music herein 00:09:58.53\00:10:01.36 the United States of America that started comes from a family 00:10:01.40\00:10:05.53 and I'm going to introduce right now Mr. Billy Blackwood. I can tell. Let me in on it. 00:10:23.75\00:10:25.25 We're enjoying it. So absolutely So it's so great to have...Now 00:10:25.29\00:10:31.76 Billy some of you've seen him. You guys did a program together 00:10:31.79\00:10:34.46 right? We did it over in the sound center actually. 00:10:34.50\00:10:39.93 Billy Blackwood and Friends and so how you been watching that. 00:10:39.97\00:10:43.00 But Billy we're going to talk in a little bit. I want you to sing 00:10:43.04\00:10:45.94 something first though. You got a book here and it's a great 00:10:45.97\00:10:50.01 book. I've been reading it. And for me to stay on something, my 00:10:50.05\00:10:53.18 mind's like a kid. It's got to keep my attention. So far I'm 00:10:53.21\00:10:59.42 having a hard time putting it down to do others. The Gospel 00:10:59.45\00:11:02.76 Music Life. The Gospel Music Live. It's an autobiography 00:11:02.79\00:11:05.09 of Billy Blackwood. So we're going to get to go back a little 00:11:05.13\00:11:08.10 bit today and find out about the dad and aunts or uncles and 00:11:08.13\00:11:12.00 all who back and the Blackwood's started about when? (1934) 00:11:12.03\00:11:17.97 1934 00:11:18.01\00:11:19.34 Before you and I discovered America. It's older than you. 00:11:19.37\00:11:24.05 Just a little bit. 00:11:24.08\00:11:25.41 It is older than me, at least a few years. But anyway we're 00:11:25.45\00:11:30.09 going to find out about that and your latest project that you 00:11:30.12\00:11:31.45 been up to. So right now maybe we going to... 00:11:31.49\00:11:34.72 Which one you want to do? 00:11:34.76\00:11:36.26 Let's do Without Him first. This is a great old...I love some of 00:11:36.29\00:11:38.69 the old classic songs. This is one of my favorites. Written by 00:11:38.73\00:11:42.63 Mylon LeFevre. 00:11:42.66\00:11:46.07 On the last chorus Tim me and you'll do just a little bit with 00:11:46.10\00:11:47.44 him. Let him do the...we'll jump in a little bit. It's hard not 00:11:47.47\00:11:50.64 to sing this song, you know. 00:11:50.67\00:11:52.27 ¤ ¤ Great song. 00:11:52.31\00:12:00.48 ¤ Without Him I could do nothing Without Him I'd surely fail ¤ 00:12:00.52\00:12:18.57 ¤ Without Him I would be drifting ¤ 00:12:18.60\00:12:26.98 ¤ Like a ship without a sail ¤ 00:12:27.01\00:12:37.25 ¤ Jesus, Oh Jesus Do you know Him today ¤ 00:12:37.29\00:12:50.03 ¤ Please don't turn Him away ¤ Oh Jesus, my Jesus ¤ 00:12:50.07\00:13:06.18 ¤ Without Him how lost I would be ¤ 00:13:06.21\00:13:17.76 ¤ ¤ 00:13:17.79\00:13:22.66 ¤ Without Him I would be dying and without Him I'd be enslaved¤ 00:13:22.70\00:13:40.35 ¤ Without Him I would be hopeless ¤ 00:13:40.38\00:13:48.96 ¤ But with Jesus Oh thank God I'm saved ¤ 00:13:48.99\00:13:59.20 If you know this chorus help us sing. 00:13:59.23\00:14:00.57 ¤ Jesus, Oh Jesus Do you know Him today ¤ 00:14:00.60\00:14:13.01 ¤ Please don't turn Him away ¤ 00:14:13.05\00:14:19.05 ¤ Oh Jesus my Jesus ¤ 00:14:19.09\00:14:28.63 ¤ Without Him how lost I would be ¤ 00:14:28.66\00:14:59.63 Amen. Amen. Thank you so much. 00:14:59.66\00:15:01.86 Hope today you're not without Him. 00:15:01.90\00:15:04.33 Amen. I love that song. 00:15:04.37\00:15:05.77 Many, many years...Wasn't Mylon wasn't he really young when he 00:15:05.80\00:15:11.64 wrote that? 00:15:11.67\00:15:13.01 Seventeen years old. 00:15:13.04\00:15:14.38 Seventeen years old. You know it's kind of like some of these 00:15:14.41\00:15:16.41 songs, oh, Surely the Presence and some of these that reminds 00:15:16.44\00:15:22.48 me that style of song, the Lanny Wolfe type. You go back to those 00:15:22.52\00:15:26.25 and just some of those beautiful songs. And it talks about just 00:15:26.29\00:15:31.96 literally our relationship because what we all...and this 00:15:31.99\00:15:35.46 what I think people talk about who's smart and who's not and 00:15:35.50\00:15:38.10 all this people. To me intelligence is understanding 00:15:38.13\00:15:43.24 who we are and who God is. So we have to ask God, hey Lord 00:15:43.27\00:15:46.31 help us understand who we are. Before we can trust you we got 00:15:46.34\00:15:49.44 to know who you are. And when you read his word and you begin 00:15:49.48\00:15:52.81 to pray and you see God literally every path that you 00:15:52.85\00:15:56.55 go through...when He wants you to go through those doors He 00:15:56.58\00:15:59.49 opens them. You don't have to fight them and knock them down. 00:15:59.52\00:16:01.32 And you know that you can trust in a God and then no matter what 00:16:01.36\00:16:05.53 you go through that literally in life without Jesus Christ 00:16:05.56\00:16:08.86 as Lord and Savior of your life you're just like a ship without 00:16:08.90\00:16:11.93 a sail. And if you're out in the ocean or even a big lake you 00:16:11.97\00:16:16.40 have a sail. They didn't have motors back a long time ago but 00:16:16.44\00:16:21.41 you're out in the ocean without a sail, you're in trouble, big 00:16:21.44\00:16:26.15 trouble. So I love it. Jesus, Jesus. 00:16:26.18\00:16:29.55 You know Danny as you're talking it just comes to me that there 00:16:29.58\00:16:34.39 are probably people watching today who feel like their boat 00:16:34.42\00:16:39.06 is out in the middle of the lake and they're without a sail. You 00:16:39.09\00:16:42.93 know if that's you today, that was my life at one period and I 00:16:42.96\00:16:47.60 just want to let you know God loves you, He has a plan for 00:16:47.64\00:16:51.01 your life. I tell people all the time, Jesus is the most exciting 00:16:51.04\00:16:54.44 person you'll ever meet. He's the best friend you'll ever have 00:16:54.48\00:16:57.15 and He's the only Savior you'll ever need. And so today if your 00:16:57.18\00:17:00.35 boat is adrift and maybe your life is adrift and you can't 00:17:00.38\00:17:03.15 find the shore with both hands we got the answer. His name is 00:17:03.18\00:17:07.16 Jesus. He gives us peace. He gives us direction, He gives us 00:17:07.19\00:17:10.86 everything we need for life and godliness. So we hope you know 00:17:10.89\00:17:13.23 Him today. That's why we're here to share with you. 00:17:13.26\00:17:16.60 Absolutely. We're going to do maybe another song or so but 00:17:16.63\00:17:18.27 then we want to talk a little it about some of your background 00:17:18.30\00:17:21.10 and your book. Who's on next Tim? 00:17:21.14\00:17:23.10 What would you like to do? Would you, you want to sing 00:17:23.14\00:17:26.11 another one now that you're warmed up. 00:17:26.14\00:17:28.64 Sure let's do that I'd Rather... This is an old song. I grew up 00:17:28.68\00:17:32.01 watching Dr. Billy Graham in those crusades and seeing 00:17:32.05\00:17:36.28 you know hundreds and thousands of people come to Christ. One of 00:17:36.32\00:17:38.72 my favorite parts of the crusade was to hear George Beverly Shea. 00:17:38.75\00:17:42.36 (Oh yeah) sing that big baritone voice and Bev Shea and my dad 00:17:42.39\00:17:45.13 were contemporaries and they were friends. I didn't know Bev 00:17:45.16\00:17:50.07 Shea but I certainly you know watched him sing, heard him sing 00:17:50.10\00:17:52.33 This was one of the songs he used to sing on the Billy Graham 00:17:52.37\00:17:56.17 crusades and as I've lived a little life now, no comment, 00:17:56.20\00:18:03.04 no comment. As I've lived a little life and I've tried a lot 00:18:03.08\00:18:06.78 of things in the world, we'll talk about that in my book in 00:18:06.82\00:18:09.38 just a little bit. But I tried a lot of things the world has to 00:18:09.42\00:18:12.09 offer I found out that there's nothing that can take the place 00:18:12.12\00:18:15.76 of a relationship with Jesus Christ. We are created, we are 00:18:15.79\00:18:19.49 born with a hole in our heart and we might try to stuff 00:18:19.53\00:18:23.23 everything in the world...You might try to stuff everything 00:18:23.26\00:18:25.20 in the world in that hole to fill it. It doesn't matter what 00:18:25.23\00:18:28.40 you put in there, it's in the shape of Jesus and until you 00:18:28.44\00:18:31.54 plug Him into that hole you're going to search until you find 00:18:31.57\00:18:34.18 Him, but you can find Him today. And so I want to sing this old 00:18:34.21\00:18:37.45 Bev Shea song and hope that you enjoy it as I do. Let the words 00:18:37.48\00:18:42.62 mean to you what they meant to the writer and what they mean to 00:18:42.65\00:18:45.32 me as I sing them. Listen. 00:18:45.35\00:18:47.09 ¤ ¤ 00:18:47.12\00:18:54.06 ¤ I'd rather have Jesus than silver or gold ¤ 00:18:54.10\00:19:02.00 ¤ I'd rather be His than have riches untold ¤ 00:19:02.04\00:19:14.08 ¤ I rather have Jesus than houses or lands ¤ 00:19:14.12\00:19:22.12 ¤ I'd rather be led by His nail-pierced hand ¤ 00:19:22.16\00:19:34.14 ¤ Than to be a king of avast domain ¤ 00:19:34.17\00:19:43.71 ¤ And be held in sin's dread sway ¤ 00:19:43.75\00:19:54.36 ¤ I'd rather have Jesus than anything ¤ 00:19:54.39\00:20:02.10 ¤ This world affords today ¤ 00:20:02.13\00:20:14.94 ¤ ¤ 00:20:14.98\00:20:18.65 ¤ And I'd rather have Jesus than men's applause ¤ 00:20:18.68\00:20:26.82 ¤ I'd rather be faithful to His dear cause ¤ 00:20:26.86\00:20:37.33 ¤ I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame ¤ 00:20:37.37\00:20:44.64 ¤ I'd rather be true to His holy name ¤ 00:20:44.67\00:20:54.32 ¤ Than to be a king of a vast domain ¤ 00:20:54.35\00:21:04.99 ¤ And be held in sin's dread sway ¤ 00:21:05.03\00:21:15.87 ¤ I'd rather have Jesus that anything ¤ 00:21:15.90\00:21:23.41 ¤ this world affords today ¤ 00:21:23.45\00:21:36.52 ¤ This world affords today ¤ 00:21:36.56\00:21:54.74 Amen, beautiful. I mean that's a mouthful really. 00:21:54.78\00:22:00.62 That's a mouthful. 00:22:00.65\00:22:01.98 That's a mouthful when you say I'd rather have Him than you 00:22:02.02\00:22:04.39 know than literally all the wealth and you're talking about 00:22:04.42\00:22:06.89 all the things this world has to offer. I mean, you grew up in a 00:22:06.92\00:22:11.13 family, you could have gone about any direction you wanted 00:22:11.16\00:22:13.33 because of the music of the Blackwood brothers. In fact you 00:22:13.36\00:22:17.63 started heading in some directions and I'm sure in your 00:22:17.67\00:22:19.77 life you look at Billy and you say well you can tell he's born 00:22:19.80\00:22:22.14 with a silver spoon in his mouth He never had a problem in his 00:22:22.17\00:22:25.27 life. Everything has just been, my mom used to say, hunky-dory 00:22:25.31\00:22:29.84 whatever that means. It was good whatever that meant at the time. 00:22:29.88\00:22:32.51 So hope it's nothing that somebody's offended about. 00:22:32.55\00:22:35.52 That's what I'm used to. So but when you look at your life 00:22:35.55\00:22:41.59 everybody on earth we each have to make our own decisions. So 00:22:41.62\00:22:45.96 you grew up a little bit. Tell us a little bit about the 00:22:45.99\00:22:47.76 Blackwood Brothers, where they started and a little bit about 00:22:47.80\00:22:50.77 them. Your dad and the rest of them and then... 00:22:50.80\00:22:52.13 Yeah well for folks who don't know about our family 00:22:52.17\00:22:54.20 my dad and his two older brothers and a nephew started 00:22:54.24\00:22:57.64 singing together down in Mississippi out in the middle of 00:22:57.67\00:23:00.34 nowhere Mississippi. That's not a town on the map. They were 00:23:00.38\00:23:03.24 literally out in the sticks about nine miles from the 00:23:03.28\00:23:06.31 nearest town which was the county seat. But they started 00:23:06.35\00:23:10.42 singing together. Realized that they had a blend in their 00:23:10.45\00:23:13.46 voices which is true of like you and your brother sang and the 00:23:13.49\00:23:17.96 Gatlin Brothers and the Mandrell Sisters you know and groups like 00:23:17.99\00:23:22.26 that. There's a familial blend and a dynamic that happens 00:23:22.30\00:23:26.63 vocally when there's family singing together and the 00:23:26.67\00:23:28.47 Blackwood Brothers realized they had that. My dad was 15 when 00:23:28.50\00:23:32.34 they said let's make a career out of this. They had grown up 00:23:32.37\00:23:34.74 as sharecroppers, the poorest of the poor, you know, farming 00:23:34.78\00:23:38.88 somebody else's land for a share of the crop. Living in a little 00:23:38.91\00:23:42.28 shack on that land that they didn't own. They didn't own the 00:23:42.32\00:23:44.69 land, they didn't own the farm implements, they didn't own the 00:23:44.72\00:23:46.65 mule, they didn't own nothing. But when they found out they 00:23:46.69\00:23:50.33 could sing they saw an opportunity to get out of the 00:23:50.36\00:23:51.96 cotton fields of Mississippi. 00:23:51.99\00:23:54.96 Absolutely. Smart, 15 years old. 00:23:55.00\00:23:56.56 Fifteen. My dad was 15. His brother was older than he, quite 00:23:56.60\00:23:58.67 a bit older but his nephew R.W. was two years his junior. And 00:23:58.70\00:24:02.30 they started singing together and eventually got on the radio 00:24:02.34\00:24:06.37 there, a local radio station, and then went to the capitol 00:24:06.41\00:24:09.71 of Mississippi, Jackson, Mississippi. Got a big deal 00:24:09.74\00:24:12.88 there singing on the radio there And one thing led to another. 00:24:12.91\00:24:15.95 In 1950 they based in Memphis, Tennessee and by that time had 00:24:15.98\00:24:21.16 built quite a following. They were on a major radio station 00:24:21.19\00:24:24.53 there in Memphis and were holding monthly concerts in the 00:24:24.56\00:24:29.46 city auditorium, the Ellis auditorium there in Memphis 00:24:29.50\00:24:32.10 Packed out the concert every month. They had guest groups 00:24:32.13\00:24:33.54 come and sing with them. But they really kind of hit their 00:24:33.57\00:24:36.84 stride in the early 50s. And there's a couple of kids that 00:24:36.87\00:24:42.64 grew up in that area that credit my dad and the Blackwood 00:24:42.68\00:24:46.38 Brothers as being major influences on them. One was a 00:24:46.41\00:24:48.12 young guy who was a truck driver there in Memphis... 00:24:48.15\00:24:52.39 That one that came in the back, tried to get in... 00:24:52.42\00:24:54.42 He did. He came in the back. Tried to get in the auditorium 00:24:54.46\00:24:55.92 because he didn't have enough money for the ticket. But Elvis 00:24:55.96\00:25:00.30 Presley was that young man and he was a big Blackwood Brothers 00:25:00.33\00:25:04.67 fan. His mom, that was his mom's favorite group. In fact, when 00:25:04.70\00:25:06.70 his mom passed away the group was traveling and singing 00:25:06.74\00:25:09.74 somewhere and Elvis and Vernon, his dad, chartered a plane to go 00:25:09.77\00:25:14.14 get my dad and the Blackwood Brothers to bring them to 00:25:14.18\00:25:16.91 Memphis to sing for her funeral. But he was one of the young 00:25:16.95\00:25:20.72 people that came up. There was another guy, his family were 00:25:20.75\00:25:23.35 farmers over in east Arkansas and he later did okay in music 00:25:23.39\00:25:28.22 and his name was Johnny Cash. He wrote my dad a letter...He 00:25:28.26\00:25:33.29 wrote a song called Over the Next Hill We'll Be Home years 00:25:33.33\00:25:35.50 later and my dad recorded it. So in the mail comes a letter to 00:25:35.53\00:25:39.03 my dad: Dear James, when I was a kid we were working in a 00:25:39.07\00:25:42.77 cotton field and we'd come in and take our lunch break to 00:25:42.80\00:25:46.24 listen to the Blackwood Brothers on WMPS radio. Never did I dream 00:25:46.27\00:25:50.18 that I would one day write a song that James Blackwood would 00:25:50.21\00:25:53.11 record. He said, of all the honors, or all the awards I've 00:25:53.15\00:25:55.38 ever won, this is the highest, this is the most. So the 00:25:55.42\00:25:58.62 Mandrell Sisters, Larry Gatlin said the first time he heard my 00:25:58.65\00:26:02.12 dad sing he said that's when I knew what I wanted to do. The 00:26:02.16\00:26:04.43 Statler Brothers when they were kids coming to the Blackwood 00:26:04.46\00:26:07.50 Brothers concerts and decided to form a group. So I mean just on 00:26:07.53\00:26:10.93 and on. The list is quite lengthy. Also in 1954, there was 00:26:10.97\00:26:17.11 a TV show...now you have to be at least as old as we are, maybe 00:26:17.14\00:26:19.61 a little older to know about this but a lot of folks know 00:26:19.64\00:26:22.14 about TV programs today like American Idol and You Can Be a 00:26:22.18\00:26:25.95 Star and those kinds of things. Well back then the program was 00:26:25.98\00:26:27.98 called Arthur Godfrey's Talent Scouts. 00:26:28.02\00:26:29.88 Absolutely. Tim, you don't remember. 00:26:29.92\00:26:32.59 We watched that all the time, every week. 00:26:32.62\00:26:33.96 The Blackwood Brothers had the opportunity to be on in 1954 and 00:26:33.99\00:26:38.59 they won. So immediately while they had been kind of confined 00:26:38.63\00:26:44.60 to the south for most of their 20 years, by this point, 00:26:44.63\00:26:48.14 instantly all of America because everybody tuned in to the most 00:26:48.17\00:26:52.67 popular show on TV at the time. And everybody tuned in to see it 00:26:52.71\00:26:56.48 They saw what gospel quartet music was and so that catapulted 00:26:56.51\00:26:59.48 them to a new level. (absolutely) And again so that 00:26:59.51\00:27:04.35 was our background. That's what I kind of grew up in was that 00:27:04.39\00:27:06.65 kind of environment. 00:27:06.69\00:27:10.59 But just because you dad and your uncles and all were there 00:27:10.63\00:27:12.89 that doesn't necessarily mean the kids would have the talent 00:27:12.93\00:27:16.23 or the desire to do it. But it turned out so many of you did. 00:27:16.26\00:27:20.64 Right. Just about all the second generation did. 00:27:20.67\00:27:23.47 Yeah. And they all loved it and many of you spent your life, 00:27:23.51\00:27:27.01 much of your life, in gospel music so this is then the beat 00:27:27.04\00:27:31.95 goes on, the song goes on with the Blackwood Brothers. I'm 00:27:31.98\00:27:35.18 always amazed at that you know and so anyway in the book. We're 00:27:35.22\00:27:39.92 getting a little bit of that but we're going to find out a little 00:27:39.95\00:27:43.29 bit about your life because at some point you had to say well 00:27:43.32\00:27:47.26 even though my folks are this, my dad's doing all of this, you 00:27:47.30\00:27:52.10 had to come to the point to say Lord I really trust you. I want 00:27:52.13\00:27:55.77 you to be the Lord of my life. But I guess you tried a few 00:27:55.80\00:27:59.44 other things first. In fact, didn't you do some work with 00:27:59.47\00:28:02.08 Elvis in Vegas. 00:28:02.11\00:28:04.11 I did, I did. But I had traveled with the Blackwood Brothers when 00:28:04.15\00:28:05.91 I was just a teenager but, you know my story, Danny and Tim. 00:28:05.95\00:28:13.76 But I wanted to see what the world had to offer. Brought up 00:28:13.79\00:28:16.06 in a Christian home, you know, Christian family, gospel music 00:28:16.09\00:28:19.73 family. But I just wanted to see what was out there. And 00:28:19.76\00:28:25.73 because of my association with a lot of these people and like you 00:28:25.77\00:28:29.60 mentioned Elvis, I remember as a kid. This was back before cell 00:28:29.64\00:28:34.28 phones. I'd know it was my dad on the phone and he'd hang up 00:28:34.31\00:28:37.61 and he'd say, that was Elvis, he wants us to, he wants me to call 00:28:37.65\00:28:40.78 the guys and go out to Graceland and sing because gospel music 00:28:40.82\00:28:43.85 was his favorite kind of music. Now he was called the king of 00:28:43.89\00:28:46.86 rock 'n roll but his love was gospel music. And he would call 00:28:46.89\00:28:49.79 my dad and the Blackwood Brothers would go out there and 00:28:49.82\00:28:52.76 stand, you know, sit at the piano till three in the morning 00:28:52.79\00:28:54.30 while he plucked some chords. He was no Tim Parton that's for 00:28:54.33\00:28:57.67 sure but Elvis would pluck some chords on the piano and they'd 00:28:57.70\00:29:00.17 sing gospel music because that's what he really loved. And he 00:29:00.20\00:29:04.61 always gospel groups opening the concerts for him. And one of 00:29:04.64\00:29:08.44 those young men was Donny Sumner who's uncle J.D. had sung base 00:29:08.48\00:29:13.35 with the Blackwood Brothers and now had the Stamps Quartet and 00:29:13.38\00:29:15.98 they were singing with Elvis and Donny started a group, got the 00:29:16.02\00:29:18.72 job opening for Elvis and called me and said, Hey we need a 00:29:18.75\00:29:22.79 drummer and I was a drummer. He said would you like to join us? 00:29:22.82\00:29:24.59 And I said well let me think about it, yeah! So I was 20 00:29:24.63\00:29:29.20 years old and I got to join the Elvis show. We opened the show 00:29:29.23\00:29:32.70 in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe and on tour. And I stayed there for 00:29:32.73\00:29:37.71 almost two years. It didn't take me that long though to figure 00:29:37.74\00:29:41.61 out that all the glitters isn't gold. And Danny, I was way in 00:29:41.64\00:29:46.05 over my head. People ask me about that part of my life 00:29:46.08\00:29:50.89 because a lot of folks know the headline of that. But they don't 00:29:50.92\00:29:56.09 know the detail that I would love to have a do-over on those 00:29:56.12\00:30:00.00 two years because I wasn't walking with the Lord, I wasn't 00:30:00.03\00:30:01.83 living for the Lord. I had no testimony worth anything. And 00:30:01.86\00:30:07.17 I would love to have a do-over on that. But God was gracious. 00:30:07.20\00:30:11.97 I found out that God is a forgiving God, God's a redeeming 00:30:12.01\00:30:18.35 God, God's a restoring God, He's a relational God. It's not all 00:30:18.38\00:30:25.82 rules and regulations. It's about relationship. And when I 00:30:25.85\00:30:30.73 had the relationship with Him that He desires most everything 00:30:30.76\00:30:34.16 else kind of comes along with that. It's a...You know that. 00:30:34.20\00:30:38.60 But I did, I deviated, but God graciously restored me to my 00:30:38.63\00:30:44.17 walk with Him and I got back into gospel music and been doing 00:30:44.21\00:30:47.94 it ever since. Spent all these years now in music ministry. 00:30:47.98\00:30:51.48 The book came about because of a lot of the things we've just 00:30:51.51\00:30:55.82 been talking about and here's the point. I'm going to go ahead 00:30:55.85\00:30:58.85 and let you in on the back page, the last page of the story. 00:30:58.89\00:31:03.53 The book is just a hook, the book is a tool because a lot of 00:31:03.56\00:31:07.90 people who may never darken a church door, they know the name 00:31:07.93\00:31:11.67 Elvis Presley, they know the name Johnny Cash, they know the 00:31:11.70\00:31:13.94 Statler Brothers and the Mandrells and the Gatlins and 00:31:13.97\00:31:16.97 all and their interest will be piqued by association with that 00:31:17.01\00:31:22.71 and with just the story of my family. It's an interesting 00:31:22.74\00:31:25.38 story. (Yes) But when they get to the end of the book the plan 00:31:25.41\00:31:31.49 of salvation is there, the redeeming grace of God is there. 00:31:31.52\00:31:35.22 And so I encourage you...I mean a lot of people just enjoy the 00:31:35.26\00:31:39.26 story as a believer. It'll be encouraging to you. But if you 00:31:39.29\00:31:43.80 know someone who doesn't know Christ this book, A Gospel Music 00:31:43.83\00:31:46.97 Life will tell you all the story I've just told you plus a lot 00:31:47.00\00:31:51.21 About 150, 200 pages. 00:31:51.24\00:31:54.14 Yeah, about 190. But a lot of pictures (good read) I put a lot 00:31:54.18\00:32:00.58 pictures in there for people like me who like to not just 00:32:00.62\00:32:02.95 read but like to see just all kinds of historical pictures 00:32:02.98\00:32:05.29 of my career through the days. And all of the Blackwood 00:32:05.32\00:32:08.12 Brothers history. Our whole group history is in there as 00:32:08.16\00:32:10.93 well. So... 00:32:10.96\00:32:12.29 And there's something else beside it here. 00:32:12.33\00:32:13.66 Yeah there's something else beside it here. This is a 00:32:13.70\00:32:15.26 companion CD. It's called Billy Blackwood and Friends and 00:32:15.30\00:32:18.23 somebody's that really close to you is on here with me. (Yeah) 00:32:18.27\00:32:21.60 Yvonne and I do a duet on here of the old hymn In the Garden. 00:32:21.64\00:32:25.87 But a couple of songs that I've done for you today, Without Him 00:32:25.91\00:32:29.24 and I'd Rather Have Jesus are both on here. But a lot of old 00:32:29.28\00:32:33.42 classics and a couple of newer songs as well. But you'll love 00:32:33.45\00:32:36.35 both of those, the book and the CD. 00:32:36.38\00:32:38.59 You know it's not just your talent that I'm thrilled to... 00:32:38.62\00:32:44.19 I love hearing you sing. There's an anointing on you. But it's 00:32:44.23\00:32:47.66 the testimony, finding out where you started and where you are 00:32:47.70\00:32:53.40 today. And so when you're singing I'd Rather Have Jesus 00:32:53.44\00:32:56.64 you mean it. That's worth everything. 00:32:56.67\00:32:58.64 That's why that song means so much to me. I mean I grew up 00:32:58.67\00:33:02.51 hearing it in a special, because it's a special song, ah you know 00:33:02.54\00:33:09.88 when you've tasted what the world has to offer and you've 00:33:09.92\00:33:15.82 been in those circles and you've been in those places and you've 00:33:15.86\00:33:19.66 witnessed that I'd rather have Jesus than worldwide fame. I'd 00:33:19.69\00:33:24.00 rather be true to His holy name. I'd rather be led by His nail 00:33:24.03\00:33:27.60 scared hand. Those things... those are not just great lyrics 00:33:27.64\00:33:31.34 it's not just a great song that's real life to me (tearful) 00:33:31.37\00:33:36.01 That's precious, absolutely precious. Tim. 00:33:36.04\00:33:42.92 What I love is the commitment to a ministry. I think that's 00:33:42.95\00:33:48.62 wonderful that...You know, I'm still a young guy. But I haven't 00:33:48.66\00:33:57.90 I mean I've been in the business for a long time. We've had the 00:33:57.93\00:34:02.74 privilege of performing on the same stages together but I love 00:34:02.77\00:34:06.04 the fact that you have been so faithful to the ministry and to 00:34:06.07\00:34:11.68 God and to encouraging and edifying and...That's a 00:34:11.71\00:34:17.59 wonderful gift. So I want to say thank you and I know you've been 00:34:17.62\00:34:22.89 applauded many, many, millions of times. But it's all about 00:34:22.92\00:34:28.56 your faithfulness, your commitment to God and His faithfulness to you. 00:34:28.60\00:34:33.07 For sure. 00:34:33.10\00:34:34.44 He is faithful. Even when we're faithless the word says He's 00:34:34.47\00:34:36.94 faithful. (Absolutely) 00:34:36.97\00:34:38.31 I think we need some music. 00:34:38.34\00:34:40.11 Okay well I think that I'd like to hear you sing a song. It's 00:34:40.14\00:34:44.75 called Leave It There. 00:34:44.78\00:34:47.42 My Aunt Lena May and my cousin Margaret, I remember when we 00:34:47.45\00:34:53.76 were kids, my brother and I were family of kids, we used to 00:34:53.79\00:34:57.53 listen to them sing. They didn't sing much. But they sang, the 00:34:57.56\00:35:01.86 only song I can really remember the two of them doing and it 00:35:01.90\00:35:04.97 really has stuck with me. I saw it recently somewhere. I thought 00:35:05.00\00:35:08.60 about it so I looked it up and I said I want to see if I got 00:35:08.64\00:35:11.41 all these words. So I just brought it up to Tim the other 00:35:11.44\00:35:13.58 day. We'll see if we can...It's called Leave It There. So I 00:35:13.61\00:35:16.58 don't know if you all know it. You can sing it with us. 00:35:16.61\00:35:22.38 ¤ If the world the world from you withholds ¤ 00:35:22.42\00:35:26.99 ¤ of its silver and its gold ¤ 00:35:27.02\00:35:29.92 I know that part 00:35:29.96\00:35:31.43 ¤ And you have to get along with meager fare ¤ 00:35:31.46\00:35:37.70 ¤ Just remember in His word how He feeds the little birds ¤ 00:35:37.73\00:35:48.68 ¤ So take your burden to the Lord and leave it there ¤ 00:35:48.71\00:35:57.12 Leave it there. 00:35:57.15\00:35:58.95 ¤ Leave it there, Oh, leave it there ¤ 00:35:58.99\00:36:05.39 ¤ Just take your burden to the Lord and leave it there ¤ 00:36:05.43\00:36:15.10 ¤ If you trust and never doubt ¤ 00:36:15.14\00:36:21.84 ¤ He will surely, he'll bring you out ¤ 00:36:21.88\00:36:25.65 ¤ Just take your burden to the Lord ¤ 00:36:25.68\00:36:29.85 ¤ And leave it there ¤ 00:36:29.88\00:36:33.46 Now this next verse, I'm learning this now. I'm 00:36:33.49\00:36:36.99 experiencing this. 00:36:37.03\00:36:39.06 ¤ When your youthful days are gone ¤ 00:36:39.09\00:36:43.26 ¤ And old age is stealing on ¤ Mmm. 00:36:43.30\00:36:48.40 ¤ And your body bends beneath the weight of care ¤ 00:36:48.44\00:36:53.81 ¤ He will never leave you then He'll go with you till the end ¤ 00:36:53.84\00:37:04.79 ¤ So take your burden to the Lord ¤ 00:37:04.82\00:37:09.26 ¤ And leave it there ¤ 00:37:09.29\00:37:16.13 ¤ Leave it there, leave it there ¤ 00:37:16.16\00:37:27.31 ¤ Take your burden ¤ or you can put an s on it if you want 00:37:27.34\00:37:28.68 ¤ And leave it there ¤ All of them. You can put all of them 00:37:28.71\00:37:31.51 there. 00:37:31.55\00:37:33.01 ¤ If you trust and never doubt ¤ 00:37:33.05\00:37:36.62 ¤ Oh He will surely, He'll surely bring you out. ¤ 00:37:36.65\00:37:41.59 ¤ Just take your burden to the Lord ¤ 00:37:41.62\00:37:45.59 ¤ And leave it there ¤ Billy 00:37:45.63\00:37:51.97 ¤ Take your burden to the Lord and leave it there ¤ 00:37:52.00\00:38:06.45 That's a neat old song, isn't it? (Yeah) Take your burden to 00:38:06.48\00:38:08.98 the Lord. I was thinking some people say well I got all these 00:38:09.02\00:38:11.75 burdens, you want to put an S but to God, it's all the same. 00:38:11.79\00:38:14.92 Your one burden or your 100 burdens. He's in charge of all 00:38:14.96\00:38:18.26 of it. As soon as you come to the foot of the cross and commit 00:38:18.29\00:38:21.73 your life to Him, guess what happens. That burden is lifted 00:38:21.76\00:38:25.23 from you, He takes it and He carries it. 00:38:25.27\00:38:28.00 I Peter says cast your care on Him because He cares for you. 00:38:28.04\00:38:30.54 You know, I've got a couple of songs that I need to do a little 00:38:30.57\00:38:36.54 dedication. So let me just say to the people the Washington 00:38:36.58\00:38:44.39 D.C. Alumni Association of the University of the Southern 00:38:44.42\00:38:48.69 Caribbean, that's the University of the Southern Caribbean. They 00:38:48.72\00:38:52.69 celebrating their 55th anniversary. (Congratulations) 00:38:52.73\00:38:56.06 Yeah right. Back in 1967 that was even before I was around. 00:38:56.10\00:39:01.14 Yeah, I was 16 or something then 00:39:01.17\00:39:05.37 So I love again the commitment to the education that they 00:39:05.41\00:39:14.65 started back then and then 55 years later, here it is 2022. I 00:39:14.68\00:39:18.89 know we're not supposed to maybe date our program but this is for 00:39:18.92\00:39:22.49 their special occasion and so I just want to play a couple of 00:39:22.52\00:39:27.33 songs for them. 00:39:27.36\00:39:28.70 You going to be a little bit of Caribbean music? 00:39:28.73\00:39:30.07 Well, you know what... 00:39:30.10\00:39:33.54 You can put a little of that beat in there I'm sure. 00:39:33.57\00:39:34.90 Well let me start with one, I'll warm up to it maybe, okay. 00:39:34.94\00:39:39.27 So here's a song that you'll recognize. 00:39:39.31\00:39:42.61 ¤ ¤ 00:39:42.64\00:40:19.08 I love this song. 00:40:19.11\00:40:20.45 ¤ ¤ 00:40:20.48\00:40:55.58 Changes style and tempo. 00:40:55.62\00:41:00.56 ¤ ¤ 00:41:00.59\00:41:24.51 ¤ I sing because I'm happy I sing because I'm free ¤ 00:41:24.55\00:41:39.36 ¤ His eye is on the sparrow And I know He watches me ¤ 00:41:39.39\00:41:54.58 ¤ Yes, I know He watches me ¤ 00:41:54.61\00:42:05.19 And you. 00:42:05.22\00:42:06.55 Yes, He does. 00:42:06.59\00:42:07.92 I love it. You know, I love watching him play because you 00:42:07.96\00:42:09.29 know what, you can tell he surprises himself. 00:42:09.32\00:42:11.13 Tim: Laugh out loud. 00:42:11.16\00:42:13.03 He's playing along and I can just tell all of a sudden like 00:42:13.06\00:42:14.56 he's like whoa I didn't even... That was pretty neat. 00:42:14.60\00:42:17.50 I want to tell you something about Tim. He'll shoot me for 00:42:17.53\00:42:20.74 saying this but we... 00:42:20.77\00:42:22.10 With a rubber band. 00:42:22.14\00:42:23.47 Yeah, with a rubber band. Yes. We'd been on concerts together 00:42:23.51\00:42:27.01 a group that Tim played with and the Blackwood Brothers and I 00:42:27.04\00:42:30.51 know what talent he was, but I had the opportunity to produce 00:42:30.55\00:42:33.42 one of our records, first record for the group, I'd ever 00:42:33.45\00:42:36.45 produced. And I tapped Tim to be the session leader. So he came 00:42:36.48\00:42:41.52 in with charts and I mean just knocked that record out of the 00:42:41.56\00:42:47.93 park. I looked so good. They said, Boy you really produced a 00:42:47.96\00:42:52.53 good record. It wouldn't have been anything if it hadn't been 00:42:52.57\00:42:55.07 for this guy. He just hit a home run on everything he touched. 00:42:55.10\00:42:59.07 You're very kind. Well, okay. Moving on. So here's the fun 00:42:59.11\00:43:06.82 song, a song that I love, a song that we all love to sing, When 00:43:06.85\00:43:10.12 We All Get to Heaven. And so I'm going to try this. You watch and 00:43:10.15\00:43:15.26 we will both be surprised. Oh no there'll be no parts. No, no, 00:43:15.29\00:43:18.96 you can put that mike down. 00:43:18.99\00:43:22.80 ¤ ¤ marching tempo 00:43:22.83\00:44:14.45 ¤ ¤ walking base 00:44:14.48\00:44:28.26 ¤ ¤ 00:44:28.30\00:45:15.14 Ha! All right. I think you missed your part on that. 00:45:15.18\00:45:18.31 Yeah, I did. I was way behind on that. Now that was excellent. 00:45:18.35\00:45:24.19 I've never heard that song arranged like that. And probably 00:45:24.22\00:45:27.09 never will again. 00:45:27.12\00:45:28.46 If we're lucky we won't ever have to endure that again. 00:45:28.49\00:45:31.83 Absolutely. I can't imagine having that much music inside 00:45:31.86\00:45:36.56 of you. It's got to come out. 00:45:36.60\00:45:37.97 I asked Tim earlier, I said do sparks ever come out of your 00:45:38.00\00:45:40.80 ears because the firing of the synapses in there just have to 00:45:40.84\00:45:44.81 something to behold. 00:45:44.84\00:45:46.47 But you realize Tim, I'm sure you must have a master's degree 00:45:46.51\00:45:49.04 in music. (Oh Yeah) I'm sure you took lessons from the time you 00:45:49.08\00:45:52.18 were a little boy, right? 00:45:52.21\00:45:54.58 Two years, yeah and that's what I got right there. 00:45:54.62\00:45:57.99 Just honestly you really didn't get that...You and the Lord 00:45:58.02\00:46:02.56 developing that talent. 00:46:02.59\00:46:03.93 It was totally Him. I played a little and he just blessed me. 00:46:03.96\00:46:08.86 But He blessed you're effort on the go. The blessing's on the go 00:46:08.90\00:46:11.73 You know what, I want to change streams here real fast and talk 00:46:11.77\00:46:16.71 a little bit about a friend of mine that we all know. You may 00:46:16.74\00:46:23.88 probably have seen him if you've watched 3ABN or the Praise Him 00:46:23.91\00:46:27.12 Network. His name is Lake Jones and he's 28 years old and he 00:46:27.15\00:46:35.82 moved to New York City and was trying to break into the music 00:46:35.86\00:46:40.63 scene there. At the beginning of December of 2021, he had some 00:46:40.66\00:46:50.71 flu-like symptoms and went to the doctor and long story short 00:46:50.74\00:46:57.01 he ended up having to have a pacemaker. Had open heart 00:46:57.05\00:47:01.82 surgery and he is currently recovering from that but it's a 00:47:01.85\00:47:06.25 temporary situation and in fact in a couple of months, he will 00:47:06.29\00:47:11.56 be going back in to replace that pacemaker and they may have to 00:47:11.59\00:47:19.17 do what...I'm not even sure of the procedure but it's going to 00:47:19.20\00:47:21.94 be where they have to puncture three places in his heart 00:47:21.97\00:47:25.81 because the valve is not mending well so he's in much need of 00:47:25.84\00:47:32.38 prayer. I know a lot of people have written in talked about how 00:47:32.41\00:47:35.22 much they enjoy Lake Jones' singing. So I just want to 00:47:35.25\00:47:40.72 encourage you pray for Lake because it could be that he's 00:47:40.76\00:47:46.46 definitely going to have to have a bigger pacemaker. I'm not 00:47:46.49\00:47:50.33 exactly sure what all that entails naturally because I'm no 00:47:50.37\00:47:52.73 heart surgeon. But I want to dedicate a song to him. He 00:47:52.77\00:48:02.01 didn't anticipate this. And I know a lot of people are going 00:48:02.04\00:48:04.25 through situations that you don't anticipate. You know life 00:48:04.28\00:48:07.42 throws you a curve every so often. And you wonder how long 00:48:07.45\00:48:11.65 God do I have to go through this situation before you answer my 00:48:11.69\00:48:18.76 cry? Before you heal? Before you send aid and assistance. So this 00:48:18.79\00:48:26.43 is a great song and in fact I was practicing this song this 00:48:26.47\00:48:31.17 morning and I got a text from a friend. I think she's my friend. 00:48:31.21\00:48:37.08 I'm pretty sure she is. And she sent me, it was a +61 00:48:37.11\00:48:45.62 international text. It was so timely. She just mentioned that 00:48:45.65\00:48:50.29 she was overwhelmed by all that was on her plate right now. She 00:48:50.33\00:48:55.73 says I had a decent melt-down after work. I left work in time 00:48:55.76\00:49:00.37 to go to prayer meeting in an effort to sing away my 00:49:00.40\00:49:03.34 discouragement. But she was crying and she said singing 00:49:03.37\00:49:06.14 while crying isn't a skill I've mastered. But she just pulled in 00:49:06.17\00:49:11.71 at home. She thought let me see what's on Praise Him. And she 00:49:11.75\00:49:14.42 says there you are Tim singing This Is My Father's World, How 00:49:14.45\00:49:17.79 Great Thou Art and the Wonder of It All. Just gold! Thanks for 00:49:17.82\00:49:22.12 the reminder of things beautiful and that God is bigger than any 00:49:22.16\00:49:25.79 problem. So I want to tell you He is bigger than any problem. 00:49:25.83\00:49:29.50 But there is that holding pattern that oftentimes we feel 00:49:29.53\00:49:34.60 ourselves...find ourselves in. So I want to just sing this bit 00:49:34.64\00:49:40.61 of encouragement to you. 00:49:40.64\00:49:46.98 ¤ The days are long the nights are longer ¤ 00:49:47.02\00:49:50.49 ¤ and all there seems to be is silence ¤ 00:49:50.52\00:49:55.76 ¤ It's hard to wait for answers ¤ 00:49:55.79\00:50:02.20 ¤ when I'm pleading for guidance ¤ 00:50:02.23\00:50:07.64 ¤ But I have confidence in the God known for His goodness ¤ 00:50:07.67\00:50:21.98 ¤ So while I wait I'll be strong ¤ 00:50:22.02\00:50:29.42 ¤ Raise my voice and sing a thankful song ¤ 00:50:29.46\00:50:37.03 ¤ That God is good. He never fails those He loves ¤ 00:50:37.07\00:50:48.14 ¤ He's seldom early but He's never late ¤ 00:50:48.18\00:50:52.95 ¤ So I'll be strong While I wait ¤ 00:50:52.98\00:51:08.56 ¤ My heart is calm I can rest ¤ 00:51:08.60\00:51:12.40 ¤ I understand His time is best ¤ 00:51:12.43\00:51:18.67 ¤ He's seldom early but He's never late ¤ 00:51:18.71\00:51:25.28 ¤ So I'll be strong while I wait ¤ 00:51:25.31\00:51:40.13 So if your waiting ¤Just be strong while you wait¤ 00:51:40.16\00:51:51.47 Yeah. What I beautiful song. Thank you so much for doing that 00:51:51.51\00:51:54.98 and ministering to people because really that's what this 00:51:55.01\00:51:57.11 is all about. We could just stay here and sing around the piano 00:51:57.15\00:52:00.98 but you know God has given us the tools to literally reach up 00:52:01.02\00:52:04.39 as we're speaking and singing here. Billy, this signal's going 00:52:04.42\00:52:08.66 22,300 miles to space to satellite traveling at the speed 00:52:08.69\00:52:12.76 of 186,200 miles per second to nine different satellites 00:52:12.79\00:52:17.47 encompassing planet earth coming down in the countries around the 00:52:17.50\00:52:21.77 world. Right now Ukraine, Russia all of the countries in Europe 00:52:21.80\00:52:26.44 are able to download 3ABN Australia. Whether you're going 00:52:26.47\00:52:29.44 to Africa, whether you're going to South America, central, north 00:52:29.48\00:52:34.72 It doesn't make any difference where. And what an opportunity 00:52:34.75\00:52:37.02 that we have to reach out to somebody to share. So thank you. 00:52:37.05\00:52:43.29 We're not just doing some music but we're doing it for a purpose 00:52:43.32\00:52:46.86 and that's to hopefully somebody in the valley of decision, 00:52:46.90\00:52:50.87 somebody about ready to give up that you never need to do that 00:52:50.90\00:52:54.30 because Jesus is always there. He's the answer to this world's 00:52:54.34\00:52:58.37 problems today. 00:52:58.41\00:53:01.68 I think Billy has a great song that would wrap this whole 00:53:01.71\00:53:03.11 thing up. 00:53:03.14\00:53:04.98 Our friend Lanny Wolfe wrote a song called You're In God's 00:53:05.01\00:53:09.38 Hands. And I was up here with Danny and with Tim, I don't know 00:53:09.42\00:53:14.06 a couple of years ago we were doing a program and Lanny sang 00:53:14.09\00:53:18.06 this song and I was working on this recording and Danny leaned 00:53:18.09\00:53:22.80 over to me and said, I think you need to put this song on your 00:53:22.83\00:53:25.23 record. So I did. And right on the heels of what Tim just 00:53:25.27\00:53:28.77 shared.
