Malta and Greece. And actually

we actually had to leave Greece

we ended up going to Turkey.
That's where we really focused

on the seven churches. Turkey
was a relatively open country.

The rules of COVID were a little
bit less restrictive so we were

able to get into Turkey
and cover a series on the seven

churches. And it actually worked
out really well because tourism

the country, well across the

So we went to a lot of these

sites and the places were just
empty. So it was almost like we

ourselves. Actually we have one

and that's probably one of my

my favorite locations as well.

was kind of hard to film and

have really held us back in some

wife and I were watching it. We

were like how'd they manage to

no one, no one in the background
And so that makes sense now. You

guys were filming this during
the pandemic. That must have

brought on some challenges.
What were some of the...I'm sure

there were other challenges you
guys ran into during that time.

Talk a little bit about that,
having to film all of this on

site during a pandemic?

Yeah I mean a bunch in
2019 wasn't the pandemic and

sometimes as you mentioned we
don't have other people around.

That's because we get up at
ridiculous hours of the morning

and try and get to places before
the people get there which is

one of our challenges of filming
But during the pandemic like

Clive mentioned, there was less
people around there. It was just

a lot easier. Especially
the seven churches. The only one

that was a challenge was Ephesus
because it's just the most

tourist location of all the
seven churches and we did have
00:16:39.03\00:16:41.76
to wait in between people a
lot there. But the other six
00:16:41.80\00:16:45.87
churches there was basically
no one there quite literally.

Maybe a few in Pergamus and then
that was it. In Laodicea when we

went to film that I think there
was about another three people

on the location apart from our
team and so we literally had the

get amazing shots and amazing

Laodicea was located about 40
miles from Philadelphia and 100

miles east of Ephesus and it was
founded by Antiochus II and made
00:17:45.43\00:17:50.13
in honor of his wife, Laodice,
who incidentally later poisoned
00:17:50.17\00:17:54.74
him. It was located on the Lycus
River and was about eight miles
00:17:54.77\00:17:59.41
from Colossae to whom the book
of Colossians was written and
00:17:59.44\00:18:01.71
was at a crux of two major Roman
roads. It was an incredibly
00:18:01.74\00:18:05.61
wealthy city. It had a
large banking center with large
00:18:05.65\00:18:10.02
manufacturing interests. When
Laodicea was destroyed by an
00:18:10.05\00:18:18.13
earthquake in A.D. 60 they
refused outside aid and rebuilt
00:18:18.16\00:18:22.06
the city at their own expense.
Such self-sufficiency was rare
00:18:22.10\00:18:26.50
and made the city famous. It was
also famous for a valuable wool
00:18:26.53\00:18:30.97
that was found in the valley
that was soft in texture and
00:18:31.01\00:18:33.51
black in color which meant that
Laodicean s almost exclusively
00:18:33.54\00:18:37.28
wore black as evidence of their
wealth. It was also an important
00:18:37.31\00:18:41.48
school of medicine located
in the temple of Carura and
00:18:41.52\00:18:45.79
connected to the school was an
industry for the manufacture of
00:18:45.82\00:18:48.69
a special eye medicine,
collyrium made from a famous
00:18:48.72\00:18:54.00
pyrogen stone. Laodicea was a
successful and well-ordered city
00:18:54.03\00:19:02.24
with proud arrogant and
self-satisfied inhabitants. They
00:19:02.27\00:19:05.17
were accustomed to leisure,
pleasure and entertainment as
00:19:05.21\00:19:09.24
evidenced by the ruins of the
amphitheaters which remain here
00:19:09.28\00:19:11.81
to this day. Jesus begins His
message to the church and gives
00:19:11.85\00:19:17.39
them no affirmation. He tells
them that they're neither hot
00:19:17.42\00:19:18.85
nor cold but they're lukewarm.
This analogy would have been

familiar to them. Hot water
from the nearby spring here in
00:19:26.33\00:19:30.90
Hierapolis was pumped down to
them by an aqueduct and pipes.

Today you can see the remnants
of these aqueducts and pipes

with the mineral deposit inside
them. By the time the water

reached Laodicea it was
lukewarm, good for nothing.

Lukewarm water, Jesus said, I

you remain in this state I will
vomit you out. There is nothing

worse than a half-hearted
Christian. If you are

spiritually hot then you are
on fire for God. If you are cold

then there is at least the idea
that whilst you are not walking

with God, you are aware that you
are not. But if you are lukewarm

you think you're doing good
but the reality is far from it.

Laodicea's spiritual condition
was such that they think they're

rich, increased in goods and
have need of nothing. But their

level of self-awareness is non-
existent and they don't know

that they're wretched,
miserable poor, blind and naked.

The counsel to Laodicea is
interesting and even included

things they thought they already
had or were the opposite of what

they had. They were a banking
sense and they were counseled

to buy gold tried in the fire,
They had an eye clinic and yet
00:20:43.91\00:20:48.31
they were told to anoint their
eyes with eye salve. They prided
00:20:48.34\00:20:51.51
themselves on their black
clothes and yet they were told
00:20:51.55\00:20:54.52
to get white raiment. The gold
tried in the fire is symbolic of
00:20:54.55\00:21:00.02
faith in the furnace of
affliction, the eye salve is
00:21:00.06\00:21:04.09
spiritual discernment and
the white raiment represents the
00:21:04.13\00:21:07.23
righteousness of Christ that
we need to clothe ourself in.

The name Laodicea means a people
judged and we take time period

for this church to be from 1844
to the second coming during the
00:21:18.74\00:21:23.11
time period of the judgment and
is directly relevant to us today

The message to the Laodicean

for the stern discipline of the

the first century A.D. there was
group of people living in Qumran

called the Essenes. They were

when a shepherd boy found the
