I'm Shelley Quinn and we welcome you to 3ABN Today. 00:01:14.74\00:01:19.04 I'm excited about this interview 00:01:19.24\00:01:22.44 because I have three people at the table with me today 00:01:22.64\00:01:26.15 who are on fire for Jesus 00:01:26.35\00:01:28.68 and they are making a difference in the world. 00:01:28.88\00:01:31.99 So let me just go-ahead and introduce them to you 00:01:32.19\00:01:35.36 right now. First is Julia O'Carey. 00:01:35.56\00:01:38.46 Julia... welcome! 00:01:38.66\00:01:40.50 Hi Shelley. It's so good to be here! 00:01:40.70\00:01:42.66 You know what? Every time I see you 00:01:43.06\00:01:45.63 your face is just so full of joy 00:01:45.83\00:01:48.17 we know that you have a love affair with the Lord. 00:01:48.37\00:01:51.11 Praise the Lord! I DO love Him. 00:01:51.31\00:01:53.41 I know you do. Now you are the executive director 00:01:53.61\00:01:56.58 of a ministry called ASAP. 00:01:56.78\00:01:59.71 Right? And we're going to get to know about that ministry. 00:01:59.91\00:02:03.89 It's just so exciting what God is doing 00:02:04.29\00:02:07.22 in Asia and in the 10/40 window through this ministry. 00:02:07.62\00:02:12.09 You're going to hear a lot of great stories. 00:02:12.49\00:02:15.13 Also though at the table 00:02:15.33\00:02:17.63 we have Byron and Carol Reynolds. 00:02:17.83\00:02:20.37 And you are both board members with ASAP. Yes. For how long? 00:02:20.57\00:02:25.27 About 15 years. Wow! 00:02:25.47\00:02:27.14 That is exciting. Thank you for coming today. Um-hmm. 00:02:27.34\00:02:30.65 Before we get started... 00:02:31.15\00:02:32.71 We've already prayed, but I want you just to get a little 00:02:32.91\00:02:37.35 feeling for these beautiful people. 00:02:38.25\00:02:41.02 Julia, you were the child of a missionary. 00:02:42.12\00:02:44.83 Tell us a little bit of your story of when you really 00:02:45.03\00:02:47.66 came to know the Lord personally. 00:02:47.86\00:02:49.66 Oh, well... the Lord has been real in my life 00:02:50.43\00:02:53.13 since I was a little kid. My parents went when I was 00:02:53.34\00:02:56.54 eight years old to Thailand 00:02:56.74\00:02:58.71 to serve in the refugee camps during the war time with 00:02:58.91\00:03:01.98 Pol Pot in Cambodia... that real difficult time. 00:03:02.18\00:03:05.08 And so I grew up in the refugee camps 00:03:05.48\00:03:08.28 and it was a blessing but it was also hard. 00:03:08.48\00:03:11.39 And when... I have many stories I could share 00:03:11.59\00:03:15.52 but since I'm with you, Shelley, it's such an honor 00:03:15.72\00:03:18.29 can I share about a story how you impacted my life? 00:03:18.49\00:03:21.40 Please. 00:03:21.60\00:03:24.00 Since I worked with ASAP 00:03:24.20\00:03:26.43 we go over there every year to train our missionaries. 00:03:26.63\00:03:30.31 And I was training and sweating like crazy 00:03:30.51\00:03:33.94 and thinking: "What is wrong with me? 00:03:34.14\00:03:35.48 I feel like every bone in my body is breaking. " 00:03:35.61\00:03:37.78 Oh no! And come to find out I was hospitalized with 00:03:37.98\00:03:41.15 Dengue Fever. 00:03:41.35\00:03:42.68 Break bone fever? Yeah, that's what they call it 00:03:42.88\00:03:45.35 'cause you feel like you're dying. 00:03:45.55\00:03:47.46 And I happened to have your book Exalting the Word 00:03:47.92\00:03:52.19 with me on that trip. 00:03:52.39\00:03:53.86 And I was so busy training and teaching 00:03:54.06\00:03:57.37 and loving the people I hadn't even had time 00:03:57.57\00:03:59.97 to read it. But in that hospital bed 00:04:00.17\00:04:02.77 I read it cover to cover and it impacted me 00:04:02.97\00:04:06.54 of the power of God's Word in your life. 00:04:06.74\00:04:09.24 And I claimed those scriptures, Shelley - 00:04:09.44\00:04:11.45 praise God - and that made such a difference. 00:04:11.65\00:04:13.05 So I want to thank you. 00:04:13.25\00:04:14.82 You know what? When I wrote Exalting His Word - 00:04:15.02\00:04:16.95 actually, I think I put it in the book - 00:04:17.15\00:04:19.35 that if I hadn't written it for anybody else but me 00:04:19.55\00:04:22.62 so that I would have a way of "markering" the road 00:04:22.82\00:04:25.76 that I could come back. And I have to go back 00:04:25.96\00:04:28.10 and read it every now and then 'cause sometimes 00:04:28.30\00:04:30.27 God can teach us something and we walk in it for a while 00:04:30.47\00:04:33.30 and then one day we wake up and realize 00:04:33.50\00:04:35.67 "When did I quit doin' that? " You know? 00:04:35.87\00:04:37.61 So... it's powerful. Thank you! Yeah. 00:04:37.77\00:04:40.18 Well, OK... your mother was a missionary. 00:04:40.58\00:04:43.58 We're going to come back to that but you also were missionaries. 00:04:43.78\00:04:47.42 Who's going to tell us your story? 00:04:47.62\00:04:48.95 Well mine starts out I finished physical therapy 00:04:49.35\00:04:52.39 school at Loma Linda 00:04:52.59\00:04:53.96 and I felt impressed that I should dedicate one year 00:04:54.16\00:04:58.16 of my life to the Lord doing some kind of mission work 00:04:58.36\00:05:01.03 because He had helped me get through school 00:05:01.23\00:05:02.66 pretty much debt-free. And there were 2 openings 00:05:02.86\00:05:06.23 and I took the one to Vietnam. 00:05:06.43\00:05:07.90 We had a hospital in Saigon 00:05:08.30\00:05:10.04 and so I went there for supposed to be a year 00:05:10.24\00:05:14.74 but... You mean the Adventist church? The Adventist church, 00:05:14.94\00:05:17.05 the Saigon Adventist Hospital. 00:05:17.25\00:05:18.68 So I went there and had an amazing experience there. 00:05:18.88\00:05:24.79 I ended up treating 60 burn patients 00:05:24.99\00:05:27.09 which I had never treated before 00:05:27.29\00:05:28.82 but I learned how to do it. 00:05:29.02\00:05:30.63 Now were you and Carol already married? 00:05:30.99\00:05:33.76 No... we didn't know each other. Far away. 00:05:33.96\00:05:35.83 So... so then 00:05:37.50\00:05:41.04 I went to Weimar Institute when I got back 00:05:42.10\00:05:44.07 which was just beginning 00:05:44.27\00:05:45.87 and I spent three years helping to start Weimar. 00:05:46.07\00:05:48.21 And that's where we really got together. 00:05:48.41\00:05:50.41 Why don't you tell them a little bit of 00:05:50.61\00:05:53.21 how things went at Weimar. 00:05:53.42\00:05:54.75 Did you grow up in a missionary family or as a Christian? 00:05:54.88\00:05:58.45 Tell us your experience. Sure. 00:05:58.65\00:06:00.79 I'm so happy to be here. 00:06:00.99\00:06:02.32 We're happy... Yes, I grew up in a wonderful Christian home. 00:06:02.42\00:06:05.49 And a lot of my relatives had been missionaries 00:06:06.19\00:06:08.40 but our family wasn't. 00:06:08.60\00:06:09.93 And I came to know the Lord when I was a young person. 00:06:10.00\00:06:13.44 I kind of did my own thing for a while and then I 00:06:13.64\00:06:15.90 really started seeking the Lord and reading the Word 00:06:16.10\00:06:18.37 and that changed my life. Amen! 00:06:18.57\00:06:20.41 And I then committed myself again to what I had wanted 00:06:20.61\00:06:23.98 as a child: to be a missionary. 00:06:24.18\00:06:25.65 And it wasn't until we got together 00:06:26.18\00:06:27.82 and God led us together in an amazing way 00:06:28.02\00:06:29.58 that I was able to go on a mission trip to the Cambodian 00:06:29.78\00:06:33.82 refugee camp that Julia was just talking about. 00:06:34.02\00:06:36.89 And that was absolutely life-changing 00:06:37.09\00:06:39.23 'cause I never realized - you know - the needs of the world, 00:06:39.43\00:06:42.53 what they were really like and how much people were suffering? 00:06:42.73\00:06:45.13 Yeah. And so it really changed my life. 00:06:45.33\00:06:47.10 And I was so blessed then... We were blessed to have 00:06:47.30\00:06:50.37 that same desire to go and serve the Lord in missions. 00:06:50.57\00:06:53.54 Yes. I just have to thank all of you for your service 00:06:53.74\00:06:57.35 because you know it's so amazing to me: 00:06:57.55\00:07:00.82 sometimes we think: "Ah, God's got me doing this" 00:07:01.02\00:07:05.15 and we feel like something is difficult. 00:07:05.35\00:07:08.29 But you see the true service, the true love for God 00:07:08.49\00:07:13.46 when you are in the mission field and see the great need. 00:07:13.66\00:07:16.77 And let me tell you: if you have children - 00:07:16.97\00:07:19.60 teenagers that are kind of going off the wrong path - 00:07:19.80\00:07:23.10 take 'em on a mission trip. It will be life-changing 00:07:23.30\00:07:27.14 when they see the needs of the world. 00:07:27.34\00:07:29.54 So ASAP: as soon as possible? 00:07:29.74\00:07:33.35 Saying a prayer... always say a prayer. 00:07:33.55\00:07:36.05 Whatever that stands for. Tell us how it began. 00:07:36.25\00:07:40.26 Yes. I'd like to show our new logo since we have that there. 00:07:40.46\00:07:45.23 And we chose a butterfly - a hand releasing a butterfly - 00:07:45.63\00:07:50.40 because what we've seen from the very beginning 00:07:50.60\00:07:52.83 27 years ago, Shelley, is that God takes these people 00:07:53.03\00:07:57.37 who are marginalized: 00:07:57.57\00:07:59.11 who are poor, persecuted, refugees, unreached 00:07:59.31\00:08:03.08 and when they know Jesus it transforms their life. Amen! 00:08:03.28\00:08:08.05 And we help them holistically so you see the circle 00:08:08.25\00:08:10.49 on our logo and the hand releasing the butterfly. 00:08:10.69\00:08:13.05 I love it! Every time I witness a life that is transformed 00:08:13.25\00:08:17.66 and then now they're serving as missionaries 00:08:17.86\00:08:19.86 it just makes me rejoice. 00:08:20.06\00:08:21.76 And I know all of heaven rejoices with us too. 00:08:21.96\00:08:24.60 And so I can tell you briefly 00:08:25.20\00:08:27.14 about how when we were in the refugee camps like I mentioned 00:08:27.34\00:08:30.41 my parents served. And my mom took a special 00:08:30.61\00:08:33.71 interest in this one young man named Hang Dara. 00:08:33.91\00:08:37.21 Let me see a picture. 00:08:37.41\00:08:38.75 Did your mother actually start this ministry? Yes. 00:08:38.78\00:08:43.59 She's the founder... 27 years ago. 00:08:43.79\00:08:45.59 But even before that when we were kids 00:08:45.79\00:08:47.69 we were in those refugee camps - OK - planting churches. 00:08:47.89\00:08:51.49 And Hang Dara... he had 25 of his relatives 00:08:51.69\00:08:55.66 pass away in the Pol Pot regime. 00:08:55.86\00:08:58.77 And he was hopeless. They were murdered. 00:08:59.17\00:09:01.27 They were slaughtered. They were. 00:09:01.47\00:09:02.90 Him and his wife's relatives. And so they started with nothing 00:09:03.30\00:09:07.48 there. And my mom shared the Bible with him 00:09:07.68\00:09:10.55 and nurtured him 00:09:10.75\00:09:12.31 and said: "You can do it. " And he ended up pastoring 00:09:12.51\00:09:14.58 8 churches in the refugee camps - praise the Lord! 00:09:14.78\00:09:17.65 and then going back to Cambodia. He ended up serving the Lord 00:09:18.02\00:09:21.89 even though he could have gotten a much better 00:09:22.09\00:09:23.43 job as a translator. 00:09:23.63\00:09:25.46 And now just recently 00:09:25.66\00:09:27.30 he became the president of the Adventist Mission in Cambodia. 00:09:27.50\00:09:30.97 I think you've got a recent picture? I do! 00:09:31.17\00:09:33.67 I do... yes. From that skinny young man 00:09:33.87\00:09:36.77 to now he is a dedicated worker for the Lord. 00:09:36.97\00:09:42.24 And how exciting to think that 00:09:42.44\00:09:45.35 because of your mother's interest that the Lord put 00:09:45.55\00:09:48.28 in her heart for him - yes - how God transformed his life. 00:09:48.48\00:09:52.05 Amen! And you know, it's not just the legacy of ASAP. 00:09:52.25\00:09:55.82 We see it happening time and time and time again. 00:09:56.02\00:09:58.39 And you know, even in the middle of all that's happening 00:09:58.59\00:10:02.36 in this world - wars, COVID, you name it - 00:10:02.56\00:10:07.37 the gospel is moving forward in these difficult places. 00:10:07.77\00:10:11.47 Doesn't matter if it's a Communist government 00:10:11.67\00:10:14.01 or what's going on ASAP sees that the gospel's moving. 00:10:14.21\00:10:18.95 And especially in the last couple of years with media 00:10:19.15\00:10:21.92 evangelism - AMEN! and how we're able to do TV 00:10:22.12\00:10:26.22 in these languages that they never would have known 00:10:26.42\00:10:29.99 the gospel. They don't... Some of them have never even 00:10:30.19\00:10:32.29 heard the name of Jesus. 00:10:32.49\00:10:34.10 And radio and cellphone evan- gelism just in 1 closed country 00:10:34.30\00:10:40.17 over 400 that were baptized this last year. 00:10:40.37\00:10:44.51 And it was primarily Buddhist. 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.64 People are eager and searching. 00:10:46.84\00:10:48.51 So when you say closed country explain what you're saying 00:10:48.71\00:10:51.85 'cause some people are going: "Well what does that mean 00:10:52.05\00:10:53.92 closed country? " Right. 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.45 So what that is a country that's resistant to the gospel 00:10:55.65\00:10:58.92 because of culture, because of long-time tradition 00:10:59.92\00:11:02.89 with their religion. And the government actually 00:11:03.09\00:11:05.89 prohibits the spread of the gospel in their countries. 00:11:06.09\00:11:10.13 So like most of them are Communist 00:11:10.33\00:11:12.17 or there's some regime that's very against Christianity. 00:11:12.37\00:11:16.81 Yeah. And so that's why we have them closed. 00:11:17.01\00:11:19.37 And if I went in there, Shelley, I would be arrested immediately. 00:11:19.57\00:11:23.21 I'm a white lady. But we have local missionaries 00:11:23.41\00:11:26.95 and we empower them and train them 00:11:27.35\00:11:31.69 to restore the marginalized and then disciple them 00:11:31.89\00:11:36.39 to become missionaries. OK, 00:11:36.59\00:11:37.96 now let me sum up what I'm understanding so far. 00:11:38.16\00:11:40.70 The primary ministry of ASAP 00:11:40.90\00:11:44.07 is to reach the marginalized. Yes! 00:11:44.27\00:11:47.50 The children... and you're going to see some amazing pictures 00:11:47.70\00:11:50.87 in a minute... but children that are 00:11:51.07\00:11:53.24 in garbage dumps living just barely 00:11:53.44\00:11:58.08 eking out an existence. 00:11:58.28\00:12:01.32 Or taking people who are persecuted 00:12:01.52\00:12:04.59 and they may be in some kind of a prison... 00:12:04.79\00:12:08.69 what would you do? Refugee camp. 00:12:08.89\00:12:10.23 And you train them in the Bible - 00:12:10.36\00:12:12.96 yes - and then you train them how to be fishers of men. 00:12:13.16\00:12:16.90 Is that right? Yes! And the cycle goes on. 00:12:17.10\00:12:19.50 It's just amazing. So is this all in Asia? Where do you work? 00:12:19.70\00:12:24.14 Primarily in Asia 00:12:24.54\00:12:25.87 but we've expanded to many countries... especially with 00:12:26.04\00:12:29.51 refugees... because the need is so great. 00:12:29.71\00:12:33.65 So we started in Asia but we go through the 00:12:34.05\00:12:37.25 10/40 window and beyond. 00:12:37.45\00:12:39.49 I do want to show the picture of the baptism 00:12:39.69\00:12:42.42 because when one soul in these countries 00:12:42.62\00:12:46.03 accepts God you know 00:12:46.23\00:12:48.86 the rejoicing that happens in heaven... 00:12:49.06\00:12:53.13 Can you imagine the thousands of angels? 00:12:53.34\00:12:55.50 Amen! And I always think of it in this way too: 00:12:55.70\00:12:59.77 it's like just as Jesus could multiply the fish and the loaves 00:12:59.97\00:13:05.21 when one soul comes and they're trained to share 00:13:05.41\00:13:08.88 the testimony, to share the love of God, 00:13:09.08\00:13:11.35 it's like that one soul multiplies and multiplies 00:13:11.55\00:13:14.79 like this person. It's exciting! Amen! 00:13:14.99\00:13:18.19 So you all have a story to share 00:13:18.39\00:13:20.50 about one of the missionaries? 00:13:20.70\00:13:22.86 Yeah, there's one gentleman named Ko Ko 00:13:23.06\00:13:25.93 and he has an amazing story. 00:13:26.33\00:13:28.80 We have a little short video about him 00:13:29.00\00:13:31.04 that kind of explains about him. 00:13:31.24\00:13:32.84 OK... OK... well let's roll that video right now 00:13:33.04\00:13:35.74 and we'll be introduced to Ko Ko. 00:13:35.94\00:13:37.85 After Solomon Lu left the army 00:13:48.09\00:13:49.79 and returned to his home village in Myanmar 00:13:49.99\00:13:52.26 he struggled to get along with his family. 00:13:52.46\00:13:54.60 He slipped into depression and began drinking heavily. 00:13:54.80\00:13:58.70 When his family and friends grew tired of his drunken antics 00:13:59.47\00:14:02.84 they cut him out of their lives. 00:14:03.04\00:14:04.54 But at his lowest point Solomon attended a health seminar 00:14:05.34\00:14:09.11 presented by an ASAP medical missionary named Ko Ko. 00:14:09.31\00:14:12.81 The two men began studying together 00:14:13.48\00:14:15.52 and eventually Solomon gave up drinking 00:14:15.72\00:14:18.22 and committed his life to Christ in baptism. 00:14:18.42\00:14:20.99 He started volunteering at Ko Ko's health outreach center 00:14:22.22\00:14:25.59 and today he is an ASAP medical missionary 00:14:25.99\00:14:29.00 overseeing a program that helps alcoholics overcome their 00:14:29.20\00:14:32.57 addiction. The work of medical missionaries 00:14:32.77\00:14:36.20 often opens doors to the gospel that might otherwise be closed. 00:14:36.40\00:14:40.88 Will you bring hope and healing to the people of Myanmar 00:14:42.48\00:14:45.31 by sponsoring an ASAP medical missionary? 00:14:45.51\00:14:47.95 Because Jesus is coming soon 00:14:48.35\00:14:50.49 now more than ever missions matter. 00:14:50.69\00:14:53.86 We can never underestimate how impactful 00:14:59.43\00:15:03.47 medical missionaries are. And in fact, 00:15:03.67\00:15:06.03 you're a nurse, Carol. We failed to mention that earlier. 00:15:06.23\00:15:09.40 You're a physical therapist. 00:15:09.60\00:15:11.21 And you ended up working, train- ing as medical missionaries 00:15:11.41\00:15:15.31 and you were in the mission field for 12 years. 00:15:15.51\00:15:18.25 So these stories of Ko Ko... How does? Tell us 00:15:18.45\00:15:23.28 what are the results when you train someone locally 00:15:23.49\00:15:27.62 as a medical missionary? Someone like Ko Ko that has no 00:15:27.82\00:15:30.49 background but later he was doing treatments on people 00:15:30.69\00:15:34.83 and he has a young man named James that he mentored later. 00:15:35.03\00:15:39.97 That's an amazing story. 00:15:40.87\00:15:42.80 And just transformed James' life too, just like 00:15:43.00\00:15:45.44 Solomon in that story. 00:15:45.64\00:15:46.98 James was an orphan. At six years of age 00:15:47.28\00:15:50.28 he was adopted by a lady who had many orphans? 00:15:50.48\00:15:55.68 And then she passed away when he was 6 years old. 00:15:55.88\00:15:58.39 And then he went through another home that he was 00:15:58.59\00:16:02.66 stealing and doing different things. 00:16:02.86\00:16:04.33 They kicked him out and so Ko Ko adopted him, 00:16:04.53\00:16:07.46 took care of him, and started taking him to do medical 00:16:07.66\00:16:10.87 missionary work with him. And this little boy's heart 00:16:11.03\00:16:13.54 started being transformed. Ko Ko's wife would cry 00:16:13.74\00:16:16.91 because of the problems that he was causing at home. 00:16:17.11\00:16:21.04 But eventually through this medical missionary work 00:16:21.24\00:16:24.25 his heart was broken and he started wanting to go 00:16:24.45\00:16:27.78 with him and working with him. 00:16:27.98\00:16:29.52 So Ko Ko sent him off on some errands to treat people. 00:16:30.12\00:16:34.36 And this really did it for him. 00:16:34.56\00:16:36.16 I mean, he saw somebody that was totally 00:16:36.36\00:16:39.49 given up by the medical field. And the doctor said 00:16:39.69\00:16:42.80 "No way we can help this patient. " 00:16:43.00\00:16:44.33 And then James helped her 00:16:44.40\00:16:48.00 and she was revived and did fine. 00:16:48.20\00:16:51.41 So now James is helping... But he's seeing the power 00:16:51.81\00:16:55.51 of the Lord working through him. Through prayer, 00:16:55.71\00:16:58.21 through the simple treatments. 00:16:58.41\00:16:59.91 And so now he's doing Bible studies with people. 00:17:00.12\00:17:03.72 He's helping at one of the clinics that Ko Ko has started. 00:17:04.12\00:17:06.82 Ko Ko has started 8 different clinics in 8 different villages. 00:17:07.02\00:17:09.82 Wow! And they have church in those clinics. 00:17:10.03\00:17:11.56 So they have this work in an all Buddhist area. 00:17:11.76\00:17:15.16 Now they have inroads. So... 00:17:15.36\00:17:17.97 you know, just mending broken people. 00:17:18.17\00:17:21.07 Just like in Danny Shelton's song 00:17:21.27\00:17:23.71 at the beginning. That's what it's all about: 00:17:23.91\00:17:26.41 mending broken people and turning them, discipling them 00:17:26.61\00:17:29.51 into missionaries. Isn't that the gospel complete? 00:17:29.71\00:17:32.01 When you think about it it is. There is a picture of James 00:17:32.21\00:17:34.58 that we can show. Oh, wonderful! 00:17:34.78\00:17:36.25 Let's see James. He's grown up. 00:17:36.45\00:17:38.35 It's so wonderful to know that the gospel 00:17:38.55\00:17:43.99 is about mending broken people. There he is! 00:17:44.19\00:17:46.39 What a fine-looking young man! 00:17:46.59\00:17:48.43 How exciting that he was rescued by the Lord. 00:17:48.63\00:17:52.23 They used to call him "the little thief. " 00:17:52.43\00:17:53.77 And now? Lots of problems... but he doesn't any more. 00:17:53.84\00:17:57.54 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord! Amen. 00:17:57.74\00:18:00.44 So you minister a lot to the Karen, right? 00:18:00.64\00:18:06.41 Do they live in peace now? How are the Karen living? 00:18:06.61\00:18:10.95 Well the Karen are a special group of people 00:18:11.82\00:18:14.86 that became Christians several generations back. 00:18:15.06\00:18:18.59 Many of them... not all, of course, as many 00:18:18.79\00:18:20.40 are still spirit worshipers and Buddhists. 00:18:20.60\00:18:22.46 But there's a large group of Christians there 00:18:22.86\00:18:25.03 and they have been greatly persecuted through the years. 00:18:25.23\00:18:27.64 And there has been a civil war going on in that country 00:18:27.84\00:18:29.84 for more than 70 years. 00:18:30.04\00:18:31.84 Wow! The longest ongoing civil war in the world right now. 00:18:32.04\00:18:35.11 And so there has been so much suffering and persecution. 00:18:35.31\00:18:39.01 Many of them live right on the border of Thailand. 00:18:39.21\00:18:41.48 Myanmar and Thailand. 00:18:41.68\00:18:43.02 Myanmar used to be called Burma. 00:18:43.05\00:18:44.39 And right now maybe you remember in the news 00:18:44.89\00:18:50.03 last year a military government took control of the country 00:18:50.23\00:18:54.96 and it's really caused so much trouble and much more 00:18:55.16\00:18:58.33 suffering and persecution for the people. 00:18:58.53\00:19:00.14 And so we have... ASAP has many schools in that region. 00:19:00.64\00:19:04.17 Over 30 schools and 3,000 students. 00:19:04.57\00:19:07.64 And these students are having to run for their lives 00:19:08.04\00:19:10.81 a lot of time while they're trying to study. 00:19:11.01\00:19:13.01 And the teachers, the pastors... some of them are losing 00:19:13.21\00:19:15.68 their lives. It's a really tough situation 00:19:15.88\00:19:18.15 and they've been persecuted a lot through the years. 00:19:18.35\00:19:20.09 We have a picture of the children in a bunker, too. 00:19:20.29\00:19:23.22 So during the day they are at school 00:19:23.43\00:19:28.56 and then they have to evacuate to go to a bunker 00:19:28.76\00:19:31.57 because of air raids that's going on. 00:19:31.77\00:19:34.77 How do you continue ministering in these things? 00:19:34.97\00:19:37.81 I mean, it's exciting that God gets you into these countries. 00:19:38.01\00:19:41.18 Yeah... it's only God's doing. 00:19:41.38\00:19:44.51 And we see that He raises up certain people 00:19:44.71\00:19:47.68 that are courageous like Joshua in the Bible. 00:19:47.88\00:19:50.52 Yes. And one of them is Pastor Jimmy Shwe. 00:19:50.72\00:19:53.42 And Carol is really close to Pr. Jimmy and so are we at ASAP. 00:19:53.62\00:19:58.33 Do you want to share a little bit about him? 00:19:58.53\00:20:00.20 Sure. OK. Pastor Jimmy... There's a picture of him 00:20:00.40\00:20:03.16 and his wife there. He was a refugee himself. 00:20:03.37\00:20:07.74 Spent over 20 years in a refugee camp. 00:20:07.94\00:20:10.11 Very primitive conditions. 00:20:10.31\00:20:11.64 And God then plucked him up from there and brought him here 00:20:11.87\00:20:14.44 to the U.S. and he became a pastor. 00:20:14.64\00:20:17.35 And now he is taking care of these refugee groups 00:20:17.55\00:20:21.78 that are now re-settled in the United States. 00:20:21.98\00:20:23.72 So ASAP not only works over there 00:20:23.92\00:20:26.59 but they also work... We also help many refugees 00:20:26.79\00:20:29.39 here in the United States in North America and Canada. 00:20:29.59\00:20:31.79 And there's over 50 groups of these. Can I say one thing? 00:20:31.99\00:20:35.93 This is really interesting 'cause you think that these 00:20:36.13\00:20:39.03 immigrants when they're rescued from these terrible refugee 00:20:39.23\00:20:43.64 camps and they're brought into the United States 00:20:43.84\00:20:46.57 often they're separated from their family. 00:20:46.78\00:20:48.84 And they don't know the language; they don't know how 00:20:49.04\00:20:51.95 to even turn on a stove or what a refrigerator is. 00:20:52.15\00:20:55.78 And we don't realize how marginalized they become 00:20:56.18\00:21:01.19 right here in the United States. 00:21:01.39\00:21:03.12 Right. Yeah. So he came from that 00:21:03.32\00:21:06.86 so now he knows how to minister to the people. 00:21:07.06\00:21:09.60 He speaks their language and he knows them 00:21:09.80\00:21:11.30 because they are all in the refugee camps together. 00:21:11.50\00:21:13.20 And then he also has a ministry to those who have 00:21:13.40\00:21:16.40 been resettled in Europe or Australia and around the world. 00:21:16.60\00:21:19.54 Even back in Asia, too. Praise God! 00:21:19.74\00:21:22.08 So God is using him. He was a marginalized person! 00:21:22.28\00:21:24.31 To be a missionary and to train others to be missionaries 00:21:24.51\00:21:26.68 it's just wonderful to see how God does that. 00:21:26.88\00:21:28.68 Amen! And you know he tells me that he was 00:21:28.88\00:21:31.55 so angry about all this war and the effects of it 00:21:31.75\00:21:35.39 he wanted to be a soldier and fight against the military. 00:21:35.59\00:21:38.99 But then now he said: "God worked on my heart 00:21:39.19\00:21:42.06 and I'm a soldier for Christ. " AMEN! 00:21:42.26\00:21:45.67 Yeah. And so now we all together have this vision 00:21:45.87\00:21:48.47 of training refugees that are here in America 00:21:48.67\00:21:51.94 so that they can go back and share with their people. 00:21:52.14\00:21:55.78 And Jasmine is an example of this. 00:21:55.98\00:21:58.71 And Jasmine is close to both of our hearts. 00:21:58.91\00:22:00.82 She lived with me through COVID 'cause she couldn't go 00:22:01.02\00:22:02.88 over there but now she's there on the border teaching. 00:22:03.08\00:22:06.29 She's an Adventist teacher. 00:22:06.49\00:22:07.99 Now hang on just a second. She came from a refugee camp - 00:22:08.19\00:22:11.09 yes - to the United States. 00:22:11.29\00:22:13.50 You all mentored her. Um-hmm. Was she already a Christian 00:22:13.70\00:22:17.93 when she came? She was but she came from a very broken 00:22:18.13\00:22:21.57 family because of all the trauma. 00:22:21.77\00:22:23.64 And she went through Adventist schools by the grace of God 00:22:23.84\00:22:27.38 by generous people that helped her. She was so poor. 00:22:27.58\00:22:30.48 Now she's a Seventh-day Adventist teacher 00:22:30.68\00:22:33.62 and she went back. 00:22:34.02\00:22:36.25 So we have a vlog, so if you go on our ASAP website 00:22:36.45\00:22:39.85 you will see a vlog of her. 00:22:40.06\00:22:42.12 But we also have a little video to show her past. 00:22:42.52\00:22:45.19 I don't want to say more 'cause the video is so good. 00:22:45.39\00:22:47.70 Oh good! Well, let's roll that video now. 00:22:47.90\00:22:50.43 Jasmine Moo was born in a refugee camp in Thailand. 00:22:52.50\00:22:55.97 Her family spent years fleeing from camp to camp 00:22:56.17\00:22:59.94 to escape the violence between rebel groups and the government 00:23:00.14\00:23:03.41 forces in eastern Myanmar. 00:23:03.61\00:23:05.41 Like many Karen young people 00:23:05.61\00:23:07.78 Jasmine's childhood was scarred by war. 00:23:07.98\00:23:11.19 After this tragedy 00:23:58.37\00:23:59.90 Jasmine's family moved to the Mae La Camp, home to more than 00:24:00.10\00:24:04.14 40,000 Karen refugees... but life was hard there. 00:24:04.34\00:24:08.48 Her parents struggled to find work, 00:24:08.98\00:24:11.05 and as the oldest of six children 00:24:11.25\00:24:13.25 Jasmine spent long hours in the summer hauling rocks 00:24:13.45\00:24:16.58 and bamboo from the forest to earn enough money 00:24:16.79\00:24:19.69 for her school tuition. 00:24:19.89\00:24:21.66 Finally when Jasmine was 16 00:24:40.01\00:24:42.61 her family received approval to move to the United States. 00:24:42.81\00:24:46.11 It was a difficult transition. 00:24:47.02\00:24:48.85 The family didn't know English. 00:24:49.25\00:24:51.05 They had no transportation, 00:24:51.25\00:24:52.62 and Jasmine and her siblings were behind in school. 00:24:52.82\00:24:56.09 Jasmine enrolled at Heartland College 00:25:31.73\00:25:34.00 studying health ministry. 00:25:34.20\00:25:35.53 But during this time she had a series of dreams 00:25:35.93\00:25:39.17 about being back in the refugee camps. 00:25:39.37\00:25:41.64 And 2 years later when she re- turned to Thailand on a mission 00:25:42.44\00:25:46.17 trip God's plan for her life began to come into focus. 00:25:46.37\00:25:50.71 More than 100 years have passed 00:26:16.81\00:26:19.07 since Adventist missionary Eric B. Hare and his family 00:26:19.27\00:26:23.21 first shared the three angels' messages with the Karen people 00:26:23.41\00:26:26.41 that led Jasmine's great grandfather to Christ. 00:26:26.82\00:26:30.62 And now she wants to help finish what they started. 00:26:30.82\00:26:33.96 At ASAP Ministries 00:27:00.72\00:27:02.55 we believe God is raising up young refugee men and women 00:27:02.75\00:27:06.39 here in America to return and share the 3 angels' messages 00:27:06.59\00:27:10.63 in their homeland. In 1914 Ellen White wrote: 00:27:10.83\00:27:14.83 "We should be able to see in multiplying opportunities 00:27:15.36\00:27:19.13 to reach many foreigners in America, 00:27:19.33\00:27:21.90 a divinely-appointed means of rapidly extending 00:27:22.30\00:27:25.51 the third angel's message into all the nations of the earth. " 00:27:25.71\00:27:28.81 God in His providence has brought men to our very doors 00:27:30.18\00:27:34.38 and thrust them as it were into our arms 00:27:34.58\00:27:37.42 that they might learn the truth and be qualified to do a work 00:27:37.82\00:27:41.22 we could not do in getting the light before men 00:27:41.42\00:27:44.16 of other tongues. Jasmine is now preparing to launch 00:27:44.36\00:27:48.10 ASAP's first refugee student missionary 00:27:48.30\00:27:51.27 to teach the Bible at the Karen Adventist Academy 00:27:51.47\00:27:54.47 in the Mae Ra Moe Refugee Camp in Thailand. 00:27:54.67\00:27:57.47 Will you support her as she shares the good news 00:27:58.47\00:28:01.51 of Christ's soon return with her people? 00:28:01.71\00:28:03.98 Because Jesus is coming soon 00:28:04.81\00:28:06.98 now more than ever Mission Matters. 00:28:07.18\00:28:10.52 Glory to God for the heart change! 00:28:19.33\00:28:21.16 Here you are in a refugee camp and you can't wait 00:28:21.36\00:28:24.67 to have an easier, more comfortable lifestyle. 00:28:24.87\00:28:29.00 Come to the United States and what does God do? 00:28:29.37\00:28:31.61 He changed her heart; He trained her up 00:28:31.81\00:28:35.54 through ASAP, and she had the dedication, the desire 00:28:35.74\00:28:40.55 in her heart. This isn't just a sacrifice for her. 00:28:40.75\00:28:43.99 It's her heart's desire to go back and minister 00:28:44.19\00:28:47.82 to people 'cause she understands their pain. 00:28:48.02\00:28:51.06 So, you know... tell me about your schools. 00:28:51.26\00:28:55.93 And you have children there. We can actually 00:28:56.13\00:29:00.24 support a child to learn. Tell us about that with ASAP. 00:29:00.44\00:29:04.97 Yeah, Shelley. These schools are just for those kids 00:29:05.17\00:29:09.54 that are the most vulnerable and at risk because of war 00:29:09.74\00:29:14.58 or abuse or poverty. 00:29:14.78\00:29:18.02 And we have over 100 schools by God's grace. 00:29:18.22\00:29:21.86 Wow! Over 6,000 students. 00:29:22.06\00:29:23.89 And you can... people can sponsor these kids 00:29:24.29\00:29:27.50 for only $30 a month. 00:29:27.70\00:29:29.16 Oh, that's mind-blowing! Yes! 00:29:29.36\00:29:31.20 What does $30 a month? When you say sponsor a child 00:29:31.40\00:29:34.77 was does that accomplish? 00:29:34.97\00:29:36.81 That makes it possible for them to go to the school. 00:29:37.01\00:29:39.67 In some schools we have a feeding program 00:29:39.87\00:29:43.04 if they don't have enough food at home. 00:29:43.24\00:29:44.68 And we have SDA teachers that love them 00:29:44.88\00:29:49.92 that share a new world view. 00:29:50.12\00:29:52.49 Most of the children that go to these schools are Buddhist. 00:29:52.69\00:29:55.89 And they learn about Jesus and the stories in the Bible 00:29:56.09\00:29:59.73 for the very first time. 00:29:59.93\00:30:01.46 And then those get in their life and they learn to pray 00:30:01.66\00:30:04.67 and they learn that life is beyond this terrible dark hole 00:30:04.87\00:30:09.94 that they're in and they have hope for the first time. 00:30:10.14\00:30:13.61 And then they go up and they share with their parents 00:30:13.81\00:30:17.38 that are Buddhist, and we see so many coming to the Lord. 00:30:17.58\00:30:20.75 Yeah. Glory to God! That's so exciting. 00:30:20.95\00:30:23.95 So you're training up... ASAP trains up people 00:30:24.15\00:30:28.99 to be missionaries. And I'll tell you something: 00:30:29.19\00:30:31.16 what's really exciting when they come here and they're 00:30:31.36\00:30:34.53 trained and go back home there are many of these 00:30:34.73\00:30:38.80 countries are closed countries. 00:30:39.00\00:30:40.64 And as you said, I'm a 6' tall blonde... 00:30:40.84\00:30:44.11 I couldn't show up and start trying to minister there. 00:30:44.31\00:30:46.98 I'd be in jail immediately as would you. Right. 00:30:47.18\00:30:51.01 But when the people who are indigenous to the area 00:30:51.21\00:30:56.58 when they get trained up either through school 00:30:56.79\00:30:58.72 or coming here and they return 00:30:58.92\00:31:01.49 they can spread the hope of the gospel. It's exciting! 00:31:01.69\00:31:06.43 Now you've got some new initiatives as well. 00:31:06.63\00:31:09.80 Yes. You know, we have a need to start 00:31:10.00\00:31:13.13 a school... an online school for refugee children 00:31:13.34\00:31:17.34 who are stuck in their homes. 00:31:17.54\00:31:19.21 And I can give you a little illustration. Can I tell you 00:31:19.41\00:31:22.41 a quick story? Please! 00:31:22.61\00:31:24.05 OK. Sammy is a 13-year-old boy that I met 00:31:24.25\00:31:27.58 in one of these big cities. And him and his family - 00:31:27.78\00:31:32.22 baby brother, little sister - 00:31:32.42\00:31:34.89 they had to flee in the night because a mob came with 00:31:35.09\00:31:38.83 knives, guns to destroy them in their home country. 00:31:39.03\00:31:44.97 They had to flee... Was this like a racial cleansing? 00:31:45.17\00:31:48.00 No... it was because they were Christian. 00:31:48.20\00:31:50.37 Oh, it's persecution beginning. 00:31:50.57\00:31:52.54 Because they were Christian. And so they fled 00:31:52.74\00:31:55.14 and I met them, but unfortu- nately I was not able to meet 00:31:55.34\00:31:58.65 the father. And I said: "Where is he? " 00:31:58.85\00:32:01.35 And Sammy, 13, said: "For the last three years 00:32:01.55\00:32:05.45 he has been the head of the household" 00:32:05.65\00:32:09.46 he said bravely. 00:32:09.66\00:32:10.99 Because his father went to the little shop on the corner 00:32:11.06\00:32:14.66 to buy some milk for the baby 00:32:14.86\00:32:16.40 and a police officer asked for his identification. 00:32:16.60\00:32:20.10 And he was illegal. He had fled there as a refugee 00:32:20.30\00:32:24.21 and he didn't have it to show him 00:32:24.41\00:32:27.21 and so they took him to the immigration detention center 00:32:27.41\00:32:30.25 and he's been stuck there ever since. 00:32:30.45\00:32:32.91 And the apartment that they lived in 00:32:33.31\00:32:36.42 was where a lot of refugees were hiding out. 00:32:36.62\00:32:39.55 And many raids happen there. 00:32:39.75\00:32:42.56 And so ASAP was able to find a donor 00:32:42.76\00:32:44.93 to move them to this new apartment where I met them. 00:32:45.13\00:32:47.86 And he looked around and he said: 00:32:48.16\00:32:50.57 "Look at this place... it's like heaven! " 00:32:50.77\00:32:54.00 And it was a one-bedroom apartment 00:32:54.20\00:32:56.97 but it was so much better than the little hole in the wall 00:32:57.17\00:33:00.71 in the unsafe area of town that they were in. 00:33:00.91\00:33:02.98 Yeah. And it was close to the SDA school. 00:33:03.18\00:33:06.78 We found a sponsor but it was quite expensive 00:33:06.98\00:33:09.88 for international school in the city. 00:33:10.09\00:33:12.62 And so we had the idea: there are so many more Sammy's 00:33:12.82\00:33:16.22 in the city. We did a survey 00:33:16.42\00:33:18.09 and we decided to start Eternity ASAP Virtual School. 00:33:18.29\00:33:23.00 And it's starting very soon. We've already hired the teachers 00:33:23.20\00:33:26.63 and the coordinator, and God has worked miracle after miracle 00:33:26.84\00:33:30.67 to get this going. So they'll have Adventist education 00:33:30.87\00:33:33.41 online safely in their little homes 00:33:33.61\00:33:35.94 while they're waiting for resettlement. 00:33:36.14\00:33:38.38 Because this is the only option for them for education. 00:33:38.58\00:33:41.68 And it's sharing Jesus with them. 00:33:41.88\00:33:43.39 So pray for this project. It's a HUGE initiative for us. 00:33:43.59\00:33:46.65 And what is it called again? 00:33:46.86\00:33:48.19 Eternity ASAP Virtual School. 00:33:48.36\00:33:51.86 Eternity ASAP Virtual School. 00:33:52.06\00:33:54.83 Two things that come to my mind: 00:33:55.23\00:33:58.00 number one: we don't realize 00:33:58.20\00:34:00.47 how many Christians are being persecuted today 00:34:00.67\00:34:04.41 and how severe the persecution is. 00:34:04.61\00:34:07.58 But the second thing that comes to my mind: 00:34:07.78\00:34:10.41 we need to pray for those people - yes - desperately. 00:34:10.61\00:34:13.62 Uh-huh. But the second thing that comes to my mind is that 00:34:13.82\00:34:18.45 Internet's everywhere. Yes! 00:34:20.16\00:34:22.12 You know, and sometimes we "cluck" our tongues 00:34:22.32\00:34:26.26 and say: "Oh, there's evil on the Internet. " 00:34:26.46\00:34:28.43 I'll tell you what: God is using the Internet 00:34:28.63\00:34:32.43 to minister all over the world and to get into areas 00:34:32.63\00:34:36.87 like this to do a virtual school. 00:34:37.07\00:34:39.11 How exciting! 00:34:39.31\00:34:41.28 And He provided just the right people 00:34:41.48\00:34:44.41 to help us get this started because 00:34:44.61\00:34:46.92 we needed people who really know how to do online education. 00:34:47.12\00:34:50.79 And so He provided key people. One of our board members 00:34:50.99\00:34:54.12 but also someone who's done it in the Adventist system 00:34:54.32\00:34:56.49 successfully. And so we just see God's leading step by step 00:34:56.83\00:35:01.10 making this a reality. Oh, that is exciting! 00:35:01.30\00:35:04.77 What is one of your favorite stories when you think 00:35:04.97\00:35:08.80 about your experience with ASAP? 00:35:09.00\00:35:12.07 Can you think of one? 00:35:13.04\00:35:14.38 That's hard... there's so many. 00:35:14.68\00:35:16.34 Yeah. In fact, every time we are able to go to a Board weekend 00:35:16.54\00:35:21.05 that's a highlight of our year because we just hear 00:35:21.25\00:35:23.28 all these miracle stories of what God is doing. 00:35:23.49\00:35:25.79 I'd say one of them is there was a lady 00:35:26.72\00:35:30.23 in a closed country who was so on fire for Jesus 00:35:30.43\00:35:35.56 she was giving out DVDs to everybody that she saw. 00:35:35.76\00:35:38.13 And she kept being stopped by the police 00:35:38.53\00:35:41.64 and thrown into jail several times. 00:35:41.84\00:35:43.81 And they kept threatening her saying: "You've gotta stop 00:35:44.01\00:35:45.34 doing this. You've gotta stop telling people 00:35:45.47\00:35:46.98 about this. " And she said: "I can't. " 00:35:47.18\00:35:48.51 So finally another time they picked her up 00:35:48.81\00:35:50.38 and they put her in the back of their truck 00:35:50.58\00:35:52.05 and they took her out to the jungle and left her 00:35:52.25\00:35:54.25 in the middle of the night somewhere. 00:35:54.45\00:35:55.78 Huh! And she knew that there were wild animals around. 00:35:55.88\00:35:58.89 She just knelt down and started praying. 00:35:59.09\00:36:00.59 She is a woman of God. Yeah, they beat her and everything. 00:36:00.79\00:36:02.66 And as she was praying there in the night 00:36:03.59\00:36:07.83 in the jungle the wind started to blow really hard. 00:36:08.03\00:36:11.43 And she just kept praying and praying. 00:36:11.63\00:36:13.23 A little while later the wind died down and she 00:36:13.64\00:36:15.44 kind of opened her eyes and looked around 00:36:15.64\00:36:16.97 and she was kneeling on the street corner in her home town. 00:36:17.01\00:36:19.57 Whoa! Angels had transported her back to her home. 00:36:19.77\00:36:25.35 Like when they transported Philip after he baptized 00:36:25.55\00:36:28.45 the eunuch? And there are so many stories like that 00:36:28.65\00:36:30.45 that we hear through ASAP of what God is doing 00:36:30.65\00:36:32.65 for these people in these countries. Incredible! 00:36:32.85\00:36:35.12 And I like the picture of the policemen coming in their car 00:36:35.32\00:36:38.59 back and her kneeling on the street corner 00:36:38.79\00:36:41.16 as they drove by and said: "That's the lady! " 00:36:41.36\00:36:43.60 I don't know if it's true or not - it's probably not - but 00:36:43.80\00:36:46.57 I like to picture that 'cause she might have gotten there 00:36:46.77\00:36:50.24 before they did. You know, it sounds incredible 00:36:50.44\00:36:54.24 to many people, even Christians, um-hmm 00:36:54.44\00:36:57.75 when you hear stories like this. 00:36:57.95\00:36:59.51 But I'll tell you what: when you find people 00:36:59.71\00:37:02.22 of simple faith just as at the beginning of the New Testament 00:37:02.42\00:37:07.96 church when people had faith in prayer and they had nothing 00:37:08.16\00:37:13.26 else. They're totally dependent upon God - 00:37:13.46\00:37:17.50 which is what the definition of humility is 00:37:17.70\00:37:21.17 is to be dependent upon God - 00:37:21.37\00:37:22.87 we hear miracle story after miracle story. 00:37:23.07\00:37:26.94 I think the only reason we don't see miracles more 00:37:27.14\00:37:29.48 in the US is because we've become so self-dependent. 00:37:29.68\00:37:33.52 I wanted to... I remember that you showed me 00:37:33.92\00:37:37.09 a picture and I think we've got that here. 00:37:37.29\00:37:39.25 And I just wanted you to talk about how you find 00:37:40.12\00:37:43.66 many of these children living in a garbage dump. 00:37:43.86\00:37:47.46 And you had a picture of a little boy from the garbage dump 00:37:47.66\00:37:53.07 to... There we see him in that kind of gray T-shirt 00:37:53.27\00:37:57.54 looking so forlorn, languishing 00:37:57.74\00:38:01.84 because he doesn't have the right food, 00:38:02.04\00:38:04.51 he's living in a garbage dump. 00:38:04.71\00:38:06.92 Now we see him... Is this like a school uniform? 00:38:07.12\00:38:10.25 Yes. Tell us about those kids. 00:38:10.45\00:38:12.79 It's so amazing. I'm so glad you came back to that because 00:38:13.19\00:38:16.79 when I started with ASAP over 17 years ago 00:38:16.99\00:38:21.83 we realized that we can't just be spreading the gospel 00:38:22.23\00:38:26.50 in these countries; we have to help them in practical ways. 00:38:26.70\00:38:29.90 And so our church planters - 00:38:30.31\00:38:32.57 ASAP is more about church planting than it is education 00:38:32.77\00:38:36.18 because the goal is to plant churches with every school - 00:38:36.38\00:38:39.91 and so... You have over 100 schools. 00:38:40.12\00:38:44.09 You're planting churches; medical missionaries. Wow! 00:38:44.29\00:38:48.42 God is working! And so the church planters were the ones 00:38:48.62\00:38:51.66 that said: "You know, we need to help these kids. 00:38:51.86\00:38:54.26 They're not going to school... they're on the street. 00:38:54.46\00:38:56.67 They don't have enough to eat. They don't even have enough 00:38:56.87\00:38:59.97 money for a uniform in order to go to school. " 00:39:00.17\00:39:02.87 Yeah. And so I walked those garbage dumps 00:39:03.07\00:39:07.18 and wept seeing those kids digging in there 00:39:07.38\00:39:10.68 and I thought of my own daughters. And I thought: 00:39:10.88\00:39:12.78 "I would never want them to be in there with needles 00:39:12.98\00:39:16.38 and the dangers. " It broke my heart, Shelley. 00:39:16.58\00:39:21.19 And I said: "You know, we HAVE to do something! " 00:39:21.39\00:39:23.29 And so that's why ASAP is such a holistic ministry 00:39:23.49\00:39:27.66 'cause we see what are the needs of the people 00:39:27.86\00:39:29.46 in these villages? How can we help them? 00:39:29.66\00:39:31.83 Is it clean water? Is it a hospice for those with AIDS 00:39:32.03\00:39:35.54 that have been rejected on the streets. 00:39:35.74\00:39:37.07 Is it schools for these children? 00:39:37.27\00:39:39.67 And so we said: "We have to start a school for them. " 00:39:39.87\00:39:43.48 And we started it and they didn't come. 00:39:43.68\00:39:45.71 And we were so confused. We said "Why aren't they coming? " 00:39:46.11\00:39:48.98 And we found out if they went 00:39:49.38\00:39:52.69 their parents and their family wouldn't have enough food 00:39:52.89\00:39:55.69 because they go to the garbage dump to find little recyclables 00:39:55.89\00:40:00.83 to sell for pennies. And so we said: "We have to 00:40:01.03\00:40:04.50 help them with some food. " 00:40:04.70\00:40:06.03 And we've trained up some of the parents and children 00:40:06.13\00:40:09.47 to be literature evangelists now 00:40:09.67\00:40:11.44 and so no longer do they go in those garbage dumps. 00:40:11.64\00:40:14.24 They sell God's Word. They sell books on health 00:40:14.44\00:40:18.68 and they're proud of being able to serve in that way. 00:40:18.88\00:40:22.85 They've come to know the Lord 00:40:23.05\00:40:24.49 and some of them are even teachers in those schools now. 00:40:24.69\00:40:27.19 Praise the Lord! 00:40:27.39\00:40:30.29 It's amazing how God can multi- ply those few fish and loaves 00:40:30.69\00:40:34.83 isn't it? Well I wanted to give you plenty of time 00:40:35.03\00:40:38.37 to talk about how people can become involved 00:40:39.03\00:40:44.87 with ASAP. You see that this is a ministry that has God's 00:40:45.21\00:40:49.51 blessing... God's hand is directing. 00:40:49.71\00:40:51.98 But let's talk about ways in which we can become involved. 00:40:52.18\00:40:57.22 Most importantly we want to appeal to you 00:40:57.42\00:40:59.95 for your prayer support. Yes! 00:41:00.16\00:41:02.66 Yes... we do want to start with that because 00:41:03.06\00:41:05.73 ASAP is a prayer ministry. And you can just remember 00:41:05.93\00:41:08.70 that by ASAP: always say a prayer. 00:41:08.90\00:41:11.87 So when you see our name pray for us. 00:41:12.07\00:41:14.17 And I... We have a number of ways, you can get involved. 00:41:14.67\00:41:18.94 Carol and Byron and I will share those, but 00:41:19.14\00:41:21.84 do we have time for one more prayer miracle story? 00:41:22.04\00:41:25.11 Oh absolutely! OK... well this is 00:41:25.31\00:41:28.32 also in a closed country. 00:41:28.52\00:41:30.52 One of our missionaries that I have known for a number of yrs. 00:41:30.72\00:41:35.12 we'll call him Mr. Lee just to keep him safe 00:41:35.32\00:41:38.63 he and his wife were in the market 00:41:38.83\00:41:40.96 and they met this little old lady - hunchbacked - 00:41:41.16\00:41:44.87 like her head was like parallel to the floor almost - 00:41:45.07\00:41:49.17 and barely getting through the crowd. 00:41:49.37\00:41:52.64 And they tapped her and said: 00:41:52.84\00:41:55.98 "Grandma Bao: would you like a DVD 00:41:56.18\00:42:00.22 and would you like this little story? " A little tract 00:42:00.42\00:42:03.92 in her language. And she took it; she was open. 00:42:04.12\00:42:06.96 And they tried to have a conversation with her 00:42:07.36\00:42:09.89 and she said: "You know, yeah, I'm interested. " 00:42:10.09\00:42:12.76 And he said: "Can I come visit you in your home? " 00:42:12.96\00:42:15.16 So she gave her contact info and they went to her home. 00:42:15.66\00:42:20.94 And they started to make friends with her. 00:42:21.14\00:42:23.37 After the third visit, they said they felt like we should share 00:42:23.57\00:42:27.54 a little bit about our testimony of Jesus 00:42:27.74\00:42:30.11 that we're Christian. And she was resistant 00:42:30.31\00:42:34.75 but she wanted friendship. So they backed off 00:42:34.95\00:42:37.19 and then they started sharing about other things. 00:42:37.39\00:42:39.29 And then he described it as "water dripping on a rock. " 00:42:39.92\00:42:45.86 Slowly the Holy Spirit eroded the hardness of her heart. 00:42:46.06\00:42:51.07 She had been in pain. She's had ridicule 00:42:51.47\00:42:54.20 because of her condition. Yes. 00:42:54.40\00:42:56.30 She was guarded but little by little 00:42:56.50\00:42:59.47 she came to love Jesus 00:42:59.67\00:43:01.68 to the point she accepted Him in her heart 00:43:01.88\00:43:04.85 and they taught her how to pray. 00:43:05.05\00:43:06.38 The first question was: "If God really is this powerful God 00:43:06.58\00:43:11.35 that's in the Bible... all these miracle stories... 00:43:11.55\00:43:15.76 can He heal my back? " 00:43:15.96\00:43:18.06 Ooh! And so Mr. Lee, our church planter, he said: 00:43:18.26\00:43:23.43 "He definitely can. He's the same powerful God today 00:43:23.83\00:43:27.14 as He was back then. He will heal you, Grandma Bao. 00:43:27.34\00:43:31.71 You need to pray. He will heal you immediately; 00:43:31.91\00:43:35.08 He will heal you gradually; 00:43:35.28\00:43:36.78 or He will heal you when Jesus comes in the clouds. " 00:43:36.98\00:43:39.55 "He will heal you depending on His timing. 00:43:39.75\00:43:42.78 You have to trust Him and pray in the name of Jesus 00:43:42.98\00:43:45.59 and believe that He will do what's best. " 00:43:45.99\00:43:48.79 And she said: "OK. " And in her simple faith... 00:43:49.19\00:43:52.53 You know, you were saying in simple faith miracles can happen 00:43:52.73\00:43:57.27 reminded me of this: 00:43:57.47\00:43:58.80 she started to pray for healing. 00:43:58.83\00:44:00.40 And so Mr. Lee and the church plant said: "We'd better join 00:44:00.60\00:44:04.14 her" so they all started praying for healing. 00:44:04.34\00:44:06.44 And she tried to straighten her back... a lot of pain. 00:44:06.64\00:44:10.71 But you know what? They kept praying. 00:44:10.91\00:44:13.31 And after six months Mr. Lee got a call. 00:44:13.72\00:44:17.29 He said he heard Grandma Bao's voice and she said: 00:44:17.49\00:44:21.42 "Call all the house church members that can come 00:44:21.82\00:44:25.06 to my house as quickly as possible. " 00:44:25.26\00:44:28.36 He said: "OK. " So ten of them went there 00:44:28.56\00:44:30.70 and they met Grandma Bao straight up 00:44:31.00\00:44:36.97 running out of the house 00:44:37.17\00:44:39.14 yelling: "Jesus healed me! Jesus healed me! " 00:44:39.34\00:44:43.35 Glory to God! GLORY to God! 00:44:43.55\00:44:46.28 It was absolutely a miracle! 00:44:46.48\00:44:47.82 Oh that we would have that childlike faith here. Amen! 00:44:47.95\00:44:52.29 Amen! Glory to God! And God knew that she needed that. 00:44:52.49\00:44:55.82 And as a result of that some of her family members 00:44:56.02\00:44:59.16 realized the miracle and they destroyed their idols 00:44:59.36\00:45:03.26 and they became SDA Christians as well. 00:45:03.47\00:45:06.37 Some of her relatives are very opposed. 00:45:06.57\00:45:09.00 We'll always have that. 00:45:09.20\00:45:10.61 But she is a living testimony of God's power today. 00:45:10.81\00:45:14.14 I just had to share that story. 00:45:14.34\00:45:16.44 Carol, no wonder you get so excited when you go to these 00:45:16.64\00:45:19.15 annual events - right - and hear these stories. 00:45:19.35\00:45:21.88 It's amazing! 00:45:22.08\00:45:24.05 So I know that as you're watching this 00:45:24.25\00:45:28.29 you're sitting there thinking: "Why isn't God working 00:45:28.49\00:45:32.76 like that in my life? " 00:45:32.96\00:45:34.30 You know, Jesus said "Lest you become as a little 00:45:34.40\00:45:36.77 child... " Um-hmm. It's that childlike faith, 00:45:36.97\00:45:40.24 that childlike dependence upon God, 00:45:40.44\00:45:43.64 that brings the miracle. It really is! 00:45:43.84\00:45:46.68 And I know some of you at home 00:45:47.34\00:45:50.11 your heart's being moved; you would like to participate 00:45:50.31\00:45:54.42 in this ministry, tell us... 00:45:54.62\00:45:56.92 Byron, would you be the one? How can we become involved? 00:45:57.12\00:46:01.09 Well there are many projects 00:46:01.49\00:46:03.09 every year that ASAP has. 00:46:03.59\00:46:06.19 This year we have a budget of almost $5 million 00:46:06.39\00:46:09.30 that we are raising through donors. 00:46:09.50\00:46:11.80 And since we started it's increased every year 00:46:12.20\00:46:15.34 because there are so many things that need to be... 00:46:15.54\00:46:18.37 people that need to be helped and projects that need to go. 00:46:18.57\00:46:20.91 So there's another slide that shows 00:46:21.31\00:46:24.98 the 657 missionaries 00:46:25.58\00:46:30.72 that are sponsored by ASAP. 00:46:31.02\00:46:32.99 I think we've got a graphic... there it is. So say that again. 00:46:33.19\00:46:36.56 So there's 657 missionaries; these are church planters, 00:46:36.76\00:46:39.86 teachers, so forth, that... that we sponsor 00:46:40.06\00:46:43.06 all over Southeast Asia. 00:46:43.26\00:46:45.13 There are over 6,000 students as Julia said. 00:46:45.53\00:46:48.97 They can be sponsored. 00:46:49.17\00:46:51.17 There are over 100 schools. 00:46:51.37\00:46:53.38 Twenty-one water and sani- tation projects, and this year 00:46:53.58\00:46:56.28 we want to do 16 church and school building projects. 00:46:56.68\00:47:00.55 So there's lots of things to do. 00:47:00.75\00:47:02.35 And then the online school pro- ject as well. The online school. 00:47:02.55\00:47:05.15 Yes. You know, each one of us have 401Ks. We have savings 00:47:05.25\00:47:09.69 accounts. We're waiting for the tiny bit of interest 00:47:09.89\00:47:12.49 from those to help us in our retirement 00:47:12.69\00:47:14.30 when God has promised to give interest of souls. 00:47:14.46\00:47:17.70 Amen! And we need to be sharing those things that we 00:47:17.90\00:47:23.41 think maybe will help us in the future 00:47:23.61\00:47:25.11 but Jesus is coming soon. 00:47:25.31\00:47:27.18 There's so much that is going to be left in the bank 00:47:27.38\00:47:29.94 or dissolved or something 00:47:30.15\00:47:32.11 that could be used now. And there are so many souls 00:47:32.61\00:47:35.32 that won't be reached if we don't get active. 00:47:35.52\00:47:39.05 That's right. Another thing that I am so excited about 00:47:39.25\00:47:41.92 that ASAP sponsors is the My Language My Life cards. 00:47:42.12\00:47:45.29 Have you heard of that, Shelley? No, I haven't. 00:47:45.49\00:47:47.00 They have collected over 150 Christian resources 00:47:47.40\00:47:51.57 in 150 different languages. 00:47:51.77\00:47:53.84 Oh, that's amazing! 00:47:54.04\00:47:55.37 And it has all kinds of things on there: 00:47:55.47\00:47:57.57 Bible studies, health programs, 00:47:57.77\00:47:59.77 the Jesus film in all these different languages. 00:47:59.97\00:48:02.01 And so when we travel 00:48:02.41\00:48:04.45 we take one of these. We take many... we take a pack of 'em 00:48:04.65\00:48:07.75 and we give them out to people. 00:48:07.95\00:48:09.28 Whenever we see somebody that we know might speak 00:48:09.32\00:48:11.35 another language... It's called My Language My Life? 00:48:11.55\00:48:13.72 That's right. And in fact, just last night 00:48:13.92\00:48:16.26 we were... Julia and I... we were having a meal out 00:48:16.46\00:48:18.99 and we went into a store afterwards. 00:48:19.19\00:48:21.23 And we saw a lady that looked like she was Asian 00:48:21.43\00:48:24.80 and we just asked her: "Do you speak another language? " 00:48:25.00\00:48:27.17 She says: "Yeah... I'm Cambodian. " 00:48:27.37\00:48:28.70 And she said: "I grew up here but I'm Cambodian. " 00:48:28.97\00:48:31.81 And so we were able to connect with her 00:48:32.01\00:48:33.84 and dropped a few words and she said: "That's my language! " 00:48:34.04\00:48:37.15 'Cause we all speak a couple words of Cambodian. 00:48:37.35\00:48:39.81 And so we were able to share these with her. 00:48:40.02\00:48:41.98 She said: "Oh my Dad will be so excited about this! " 00:48:42.18\00:48:43.89 So these are the kind... Every time we travel 00:48:44.09\00:48:45.79 internationally or anywhere we look for people. 00:48:45.99\00:48:48.52 This card is sending them to a website? 00:48:48.72\00:48:51.43 Yeah, a website in which there's resources 00:48:51.63\00:48:54.00 in all these different languages 00:48:54.20\00:48:55.53 And they click on your website, ASAP? Yeah. 00:48:55.56\00:48:57.93 So this is a separate website - OK - just for reaching 00:48:58.33\00:49:01.80 non-Christian people. How exciting! Yeah. 00:49:02.00\00:49:05.87 In 150 languages. 150 languages. They can choose 00:49:06.07\00:49:08.84 their language. Wow! And if they're really excited 00:49:09.04\00:49:12.25 about being missionaries but they can't go overseas 00:49:12.45\00:49:14.85 they can be missionaries to refugees and immigrants 00:49:15.05\00:49:17.95 who are Buddhist and Muslim? And we have a new kit 00:49:18.15\00:49:21.56 called Reach the Room Next Door that your family 00:49:21.76\00:49:24.33 or church or even a conference 00:49:24.53\00:49:27.33 anyone can take. And it has lessons 00:49:27.53\00:49:31.87 and it's very practical. And it teaches you how to break 00:49:32.07\00:49:34.70 those barriers - yes - and how to reach people for Christ 00:49:34.90\00:49:37.81 that are different than you. So now 00:49:38.01\00:49:39.41 this Reach the World Next Door... 00:49:39.81\00:49:42.84 this is a kit. Not worthy to be there 00:50:23.89\00:50:26.96 but this place where the one who felt his need 00:50:27.16\00:50:30.13 cried out for salvation and for help. 00:50:30.33\00:50:32.43 The story of Jesus on the cross is the most amazing 00:50:33.16\00:50:35.80 story in the world, and it is powerful to share with those 00:50:36.00\00:50:39.27 who have never had a chance to know the love of God. 00:50:39.47\00:50:41.77 But for many people they look and they don't understand. 00:50:42.27\00:50:44.91 There are Muslims who assume that Jesus would never have 00:50:45.11\00:50:47.74 died on the cross and was taken up to heaven before that. 00:50:47.94\00:50:50.48 There are Hindus and Buddhists who don't understand 00:50:51.01\00:50:53.48 how someone who seems to have such bad karma 00:50:53.68\00:50:57.15 can be the One that we worship. 00:50:57.35\00:50:58.85 Seems like it's foolishness and a stumbling block 00:50:59.05\00:51:00.96 just like Paul said. 00:51:01.16\00:51:02.52 But Paul went on to say it's also the wisdom and the power 00:51:02.72\00:51:05.66 of God. He said it's so important, so special 00:51:05.86\00:51:08.73 that he determined to preach nothing else 00:51:08.93\00:51:10.90 except for Jesus Christ and Him crucified. 00:51:11.10\00:51:13.70 What about you? Are you ready? 00:51:14.10\00:51:16.57 Are you willing to share this beautiful most precious 00:51:16.77\00:51:19.44 story with Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, Jews, and the secular 00:51:19.64\00:51:22.48 people, that live around us? 00:51:22.68\00:51:24.08 Are you spending time with Jesus 00:51:24.28\00:51:26.85 so that it fills your heart with love overflowing 00:51:27.05\00:51:30.32 and you know it is the answer for the problems of people? 00:51:30.52\00:51:33.79 This is what we need to do. 00:51:34.19\00:51:35.86 Jesus wants to come back 00:51:36.06\00:51:37.59 but He has determined He will not return until every 00:51:37.79\00:51:40.56 nation, every tribe, every tongue 00:51:40.76\00:51:42.43 has had an opportunity to hear His story 00:51:42.63\00:51:45.53 and respond to His invitation to receive forgiveness 00:51:45.73\00:51:48.90 to receive the transformation of the heart 00:51:49.10\00:51:51.41 His power over evil. 00:51:51.61\00:51:53.14 We have developed an online training program 00:51:53.34\00:51:55.41 called Reach the World Next Door 00:51:55.61\00:51:57.15 where in 13 sessions you, your family, or church group 00:51:57.35\00:52:01.42 can go through and understand better 00:52:01.62\00:52:04.19 how to share the love of God with immigrants, 00:52:04.35\00:52:06.55 refugees, and international students. 00:52:06.76\00:52:08.52 I hope you will take time to learn from that 00:52:08.72\00:52:11.16 and to get out there into the community 00:52:11.36\00:52:13.73 so that together we can reach the world ASAP. 00:52:13.93\00:52:17.37 We have an address roll to inform you how you can get 00:52:22.77\00:52:25.97 in touch with ASAP and how you can become a supporter. 00:52:26.17\00:52:29.84
