Amen. You know what? 00:02:43.76\00:02:46.19 I love those verses because I truly feel, 00:02:46.23\00:02:48.80 you know, 'cause we work with the homeless 00:02:48.83\00:02:50.67 in the Orlando area. 00:02:50.70\00:02:52.60 And I truly feel like that, 00:02:52.63\00:02:56.24 like the people experiencing homelessness are experiencing 00:02:56.27\00:02:59.91 all those things. 00:02:59.94\00:03:01.28 They're lacking food, water, 00:03:01.31\00:03:04.71 shelter, clothing, 00:03:04.75\00:03:07.82 you know, some of them are just coming out of prison. 00:03:07.85\00:03:11.19 You know, some of them are sick, you know? 00:03:11.22\00:03:13.49 I truly believe that verse encompasses, 00:03:13.52\00:03:18.43 yeah, I think it does encompass what we do with SALT 00:03:18.46\00:03:21.13 and what we're trying to aspire to, 00:03:21.16\00:03:22.66 you know, 00:03:22.70\00:03:24.03 to really be an impact in the community, so... 00:03:24.07\00:03:25.63 Absolutely, and it's at a point in time 00:03:25.67\00:03:29.40 where it is so needed. 00:03:29.44\00:03:32.54 I want to go to a song first 00:03:32.57\00:03:35.28 and then we'll dive deeper into what SALT is all about. 00:03:35.31\00:03:38.98 But the song we're going to go to is with Stephanie Dawn 00:03:39.01\00:03:43.32 and Pastor John Lomacang and it's entitled, 00:03:43.35\00:03:46.12 In Times Like These. 00:03:46.15\00:03:48.39 In times like these 00:04:08.54\00:04:14.22 You need a Savior 00:04:14.25\00:04:19.05 In times like these 00:04:19.09\00:04:23.79 You need an anchor 00:04:23.83\00:04:28.90 Be very sure, 00:04:28.93\00:04:34.20 Be very sure 00:04:34.24\00:04:39.04 Your anchor holds and grips 00:04:39.07\00:04:44.51 The Solid Rock! 00:04:44.55\00:04:49.75 In times like these 00:04:49.78\00:04:54.96 You need the Bible 00:04:54.99\00:04:59.33 In times like these, 00:04:59.36\00:05:03.73 O be not idle 00:05:03.77\00:05:08.54 Be very sure, 00:05:08.57\00:05:13.24 Be very sure 00:05:13.27\00:05:17.65 Your anchor holds and grips 00:05:17.68\00:05:22.65 The Solid Rock! 00:05:22.68\00:05:27.42 This Rock is Jesus, 00:05:27.46\00:05:31.89 Yes He's the One 00:05:31.93\00:05:35.63 This Rock is Jesus, 00:05:35.66\00:05:39.67 The only One 00:05:39.70\00:05:44.04 Be very sure, 00:05:44.07\00:05:48.64 Be very sure 00:05:48.68\00:05:53.11 Your anchor holds and grips 00:05:53.15\00:05:58.45 The Solid Rock! 00:05:58.49\00:06:03.32 In times like these 00:06:17.44\00:06:22.01 I have a Savior 00:06:22.04\00:06:25.91 In times like these 00:06:25.95\00:06:29.92 I have an anchor 00:06:29.95\00:06:33.96 I'm very sure, 00:06:33.99\00:06:38.03 I'm very sure 00:06:38.06\00:06:41.96 My anchor holds and grips 00:06:42.00\00:06:46.53 The Solid Rock! 00:06:46.57\00:06:51.01 This Rock is Jesus, 00:06:51.04\00:06:54.94 Yes He's the One 00:06:54.98\00:06:58.61 This Rock is Jesus, 00:06:58.65\00:07:02.38 The only One 00:07:02.42\00:07:06.92 Be very sure, 00:07:06.96\00:07:11.76 Be very sure 00:07:11.79\00:07:16.10 Your anchor holds and grips 00:07:16.13\00:07:20.94 The Solid Rock! 00:07:20.97\00:07:25.34 Be very sure, 00:07:25.37\00:07:29.54 Be very sure 00:07:29.58\00:07:34.12 Your anchor holds and grips 00:07:34.15\00:07:39.95 The Solid 00:07:39.99\00:07:43.53 Rock! 00:07:43.56\00:07:49.06 Wow, what a beautiful song and a powerful message. 00:07:52.70\00:07:55.07 Thank you for that. 00:07:55.10\00:07:56.57 Eric, you've been here plenty of times, 00:07:56.60\00:07:59.94 and you know, it's been exciting to see 00:07:59.97\00:08:02.04 the growth of SALT 00:08:02.08\00:08:04.58 and you leading out in that ministry. 00:08:04.61\00:08:06.82 But I want to take it back to the beginning. 00:08:06.85\00:08:09.72 Tell us how SALT got started? 00:08:09.75\00:08:11.79 Yeah, no, I would be happy to share that. 00:08:11.82\00:08:15.02 SALT was something that started originally as something 00:08:15.06\00:08:18.76 that would engage the different entities 00:08:18.79\00:08:24.57 and churches to come together to make a measurable difference 00:08:24.60\00:08:27.40 in the community. 00:08:27.44\00:08:29.17 And so part of the reason why I think why, 00:08:29.20\00:08:32.51 how God had inspired that idea was when I first got baptized 00:08:32.54\00:08:38.28 and I became a part of the church 00:08:38.31\00:08:40.98 and a Christian, 00:08:41.02\00:08:42.98 I noticed that there were young adults 00:08:43.02\00:08:45.99 that were leaving the church. 00:08:46.02\00:08:48.46 I noticed that there were a very small number 00:08:48.49\00:08:50.83 of young adults in the church, and I also noticed 00:08:50.86\00:08:53.09 that there wasn't consistent outreach being done, 00:08:53.13\00:08:56.00 you know, those may be a quarterly event, 00:08:56.03\00:08:58.30 you know, something maybe once a month or something, 00:08:58.33\00:09:00.70 but nothing super consistent. 00:09:00.74\00:09:03.30 And I believe that there was a direct correlation. 00:09:03.34\00:09:05.81 I believe that young adults wanted to see the church 00:09:05.84\00:09:08.91 making a measurable impact in the community. 00:09:08.94\00:09:11.48 And so the whole idea for starting SALT was a way 00:09:11.51\00:09:14.68 to create a vehicle 00:09:14.72\00:09:16.45 for young adults to be a part of, 00:09:16.48\00:09:18.45 to make that measurable impact. 00:09:18.49\00:09:20.66 So that way, they have that young adult community, 00:09:20.69\00:09:23.06 they're making a difference, but now and you know, 00:09:23.09\00:09:26.59 they're representing all the local churches, 00:09:26.63\00:09:28.90 the combined resources and do something big. 00:09:28.93\00:09:31.33 So that was originally 00:09:31.37\00:09:32.70 how the idea came about for SALT. 00:09:32.73\00:09:35.97 Wow, that's awesome. 00:09:36.00\00:09:37.34 Because it's not just giving young people an activity to do, 00:09:37.37\00:09:40.31 but they're benefiting the community, 00:09:40.34\00:09:43.55 witnessing to the community, practical Christianity 00:09:43.58\00:09:46.11 is taking place in full effect. 00:09:46.15\00:09:48.38 That's exciting. 00:09:48.42\00:09:49.75 I know we touched a little bit on what SALT does, 00:09:49.78\00:09:52.55 but why don't you dive a little bit deeper into that? 00:09:52.59\00:09:54.82 Yeah, so SALT is an acronym for Service and Love Together. 00:09:54.86\00:09:59.33 And so we right now have a homeless outreach 00:09:59.36\00:10:04.77 that was launched in 2012. 00:10:04.80\00:10:08.27 Started with two women, 00:10:08.30\00:10:10.11 they would feed about 15 to 20 people. 00:10:10.14\00:10:13.44 One of them would even travel an hour and a half to do this. 00:10:13.48\00:10:16.91 And so they go out there on their own, 00:10:16.95\00:10:19.51 and they're very bold, so bold that they would 00:10:19.55\00:10:22.68 and I wouldn't recommend this to anybody 00:10:22.72\00:10:24.72 but so bold that they would fill their car 00:10:24.75\00:10:27.26 with people and take them to church. 00:10:27.29\00:10:29.42 And not only would they take them to church, 00:10:29.46\00:10:30.89 they would actually do outreach with us in the afternoon too, 00:10:30.93\00:10:33.70 you know, and so there was deep relationships being made there. 00:10:33.73\00:10:37.87 And so we started there, 00:10:37.90\00:10:40.64 and just over about three years, 00:10:40.67\00:10:43.57 it grew to just you know, what, two feeding 15 to 20 00:10:43.61\00:10:46.81 to hundreds of people feeding hundreds of people. 00:10:46.84\00:10:50.68 And it really became a blessing that was happening biweekly, 00:10:50.71\00:10:54.78 up until we started 00:10:54.82\00:10:56.22 kind of developing this trailer concept in 2016. 00:10:56.25\00:10:59.92 And that's when things kind of really started 00:10:59.95\00:11:02.62 to take off with the organization 00:11:02.66\00:11:05.13 and the ministry. 00:11:05.16\00:11:06.49 And tell us about this trailer concept? 00:11:06.53\00:11:08.56 Yeah, so in 2016, we launched our change trailer, 00:11:08.60\00:11:13.74 we use it, it's our clothing trailer. 00:11:13.77\00:11:15.37 So we use it to hand our clothing, 00:11:15.40\00:11:17.24 and to hand our hygiene product, 00:11:17.27\00:11:18.97 and we actually use it now as our registration 00:11:19.01\00:11:20.81 like kind of like the first line there. 00:11:20.84\00:11:24.38 In 2018, we actually fundraised about 40,000, 00:11:24.41\00:11:29.38 thanks to the viewers on 3ABN actually played a huge part. 00:11:29.42\00:11:33.62 At least half of that trailer was funded by 3ABN viewers, 00:11:33.66\00:11:37.53 which is amazing. 00:11:37.56\00:11:38.89 But about 40,000 was raised total, 00:11:38.93\00:11:42.56 and we got a shower trailer, has four bathrooms 00:11:42.60\00:11:44.97 to provide showers and bathroom use to the unsheltered. 00:11:45.00\00:11:48.57 We had done surveys and found out 00:11:48.60\00:11:50.47 that there were some people actively looking for work 00:11:50.51\00:11:53.68 that hadn't showered in three months. 00:11:53.71\00:11:55.58 When you're experiencing homelessness, 00:11:55.61\00:11:57.88 you can't shower, there's no way 00:11:57.91\00:11:59.25 you're going to be able to find a job, 00:11:59.28\00:12:00.72 you can't find a job, how are you going 00:12:00.75\00:12:02.08 to find a place to live? 00:12:02.12\00:12:03.59 So it was very eye-opening for us 00:12:03.62\00:12:07.72 and that's why we went that route 00:12:07.76\00:12:09.09 with the shower trailer in 2018. 00:12:09.12\00:12:11.93 Unknowingly to us, doing these surveys 00:12:11.96\00:12:15.86 and figuring out their needs directly. 00:12:15.90\00:12:17.57 Because I do believe that there are many organizations 00:12:17.60\00:12:21.27 and people out there that just kind of assume the need 00:12:21.30\00:12:23.94 of the population. 00:12:23.97\00:12:25.94 Well, they're homeless, they probably need this, 00:12:25.97\00:12:27.74 they need that, and that's okay to an extent. 00:12:27.78\00:12:31.41 But in order to grow, 00:12:31.45\00:12:32.88 in order to take the next step in meeting needs, 00:12:32.91\00:12:37.29 you have to talk to them, 00:12:37.32\00:12:38.65 you have to get to know them 00:12:38.69\00:12:40.36 and see what their actual needs are. 00:12:40.39\00:12:42.52 And so the city of Orlando was one of the biggest cities 00:12:42.56\00:12:46.33 that did not have a day service center 00:12:46.36\00:12:48.33 for the unsheltered. 00:12:48.36\00:12:49.70 So in other words, there wasn't a consistent, 00:12:49.73\00:12:51.77 a full consistent place 00:12:51.80\00:12:53.64 where someone that's experiencing homelessness 00:12:53.67\00:12:55.60 can go and get all of their basic needs met. 00:12:55.64\00:12:58.94 So unknowingly to us, we were creating that. 00:12:58.97\00:13:02.21 And not because the city told us to, 00:13:02.24\00:13:04.85 but because the people we were serving told us 00:13:04.88\00:13:06.88 what their needs were. 00:13:06.92\00:13:08.25 So what you did was you implemented Christ method 00:13:08.28\00:13:10.35 of evangelism. 00:13:10.39\00:13:11.72 Amen. 00:13:11.75\00:13:13.09 That's, yes, yes, we created relationship, 00:13:13.12\00:13:14.96 we figured out what the need was, 00:13:14.99\00:13:16.52 we met that need, we won their confidence, 00:13:16.56\00:13:19.69 and now we're bidding them to follow Christ, you know? 00:13:19.73\00:13:23.43 And so, that's been an amazing thing 00:13:23.47\00:13:26.47 is just by those surveys, 00:13:26.50\00:13:28.90 meeting the need for the unsheltered 00:13:28.94\00:13:30.41 and the city at the same time, so that was a blessing. 00:13:30.44\00:13:33.24 Wow, that's huge. 00:13:33.27\00:13:34.61 I know the city is super happy to have you guys there 00:13:34.64\00:13:37.25 operating and all of that. 00:13:37.28\00:13:40.68 This is a hands-on close contact ministry. 00:13:40.72\00:13:44.99 So in 2020, how did COVID-19 affect your organization, 00:13:45.02\00:13:50.73 your operations? 00:13:50.76\00:13:52.09 Now that's a great question. We get that question a lot too. 00:13:52.13\00:13:55.90 And COVID definitely turned the world upside down, you know? 00:13:55.93\00:13:59.93 And when we launched our shower trailer in 2018, 00:13:59.97\00:14:03.54 we were operating once a month, right? 00:14:03.57\00:14:05.17 2019, operating about twice a month. 00:14:05.21\00:14:07.58 2020, when COVID-19 really was starting to hit, 00:14:07.61\00:14:10.48 we decided to start hiring staff. 00:14:10.51\00:14:14.42 And so this right before COVID, 00:14:14.45\00:14:16.55 we hired two part time people to operate once a week 00:14:16.58\00:14:18.95 because we wanted to increase our services. 00:14:18.99\00:14:22.49 And then a month later, COVID hit. 00:14:22.52\00:14:24.99 And so we were all praying, 00:14:25.03\00:14:27.80 our leadership team and all of us were all praying, 00:14:27.83\00:14:30.60 what do we do? 00:14:30.63\00:14:31.97 You know, there's uncertainty around this virus, 00:14:32.00\00:14:35.30 all the other organizations that serve the unsheltered 00:14:35.34\00:14:37.97 were not taking walk into anymore, 00:14:38.01\00:14:39.37 some of them were closing down. 00:14:39.41\00:14:41.04 So the unsheltered did not have many places to go, 00:14:41.08\00:14:45.71 even the food shares where they were getting food, 00:14:45.75\00:14:48.72 a lot of those places shut down, 00:14:48.75\00:14:50.55 you know, they and it makes sense. 00:14:50.59\00:14:52.35 You know, they're gathering hundreds of people together, 00:14:52.39\00:14:54.82 there's volunteers all, you know, so it made sense. 00:14:54.86\00:14:59.09 But for us, we decided to continue operating 00:14:59.13\00:15:04.70 during the pandemic because we were the only people 00:15:04.73\00:15:07.07 that had an outside operation, that so because we're outside, 00:15:07.10\00:15:11.01 it's a lower risk, you know, spread. 00:15:11.04\00:15:13.24 And not only that we, we didn't want to be, 00:15:13.27\00:15:17.15 we didn't want to leave our friends 00:15:17.18\00:15:19.81 hanging in the balance with no services, you know? 00:15:19.85\00:15:22.28 Yes. 00:15:22.32\00:15:23.65 And so that's when we create a partnership with the city, 00:15:23.69\00:15:27.49 because they realized that we were the only organization 00:15:27.52\00:15:30.06 that could operate immediately when COVID started hitting. 00:15:30.09\00:15:32.79 So we went from once a week to three days a week 00:15:32.83\00:15:36.10 with that partnership. 00:15:36.13\00:15:37.47 Wow. 00:15:37.50\00:15:38.83 So during that time, too, there were some people 00:15:38.87\00:15:41.27 who really stepped up and saw what SALT was doing, 00:15:41.30\00:15:45.57 embraced what you all were doing. 00:15:45.61\00:15:48.08 And they provided what? A place to stay? 00:15:48.11\00:15:50.75 Tell us a little bit about that? 00:15:50.78\00:15:52.21 Yeah, so like, 00:15:52.25\00:15:54.32 so the Hilton, actually, 00:15:54.35\00:15:58.75 when we, when COVID hit, my wife and I, 00:15:58.79\00:16:01.62 we were just kind of impressed one night to call the Hilton, 00:16:01.66\00:16:07.06 and I believe it was God. 00:16:07.10\00:16:08.43 And we were just kind of praying and wondering, 00:16:08.46\00:16:10.67 "Okay, this virus is here, our staff is out there, 00:16:10.70\00:16:14.97 we don't know what's going to happen, 00:16:15.00\00:16:16.40 you know, they have family that's vulnerable. 00:16:16.44\00:16:19.31 You know, what do we do?" 00:16:19.34\00:16:20.88 And they had concerns, expressed concerns, 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.61 and definitely, totally understandable, 00:16:22.64\00:16:26.11 you know, for our volunteers and some of our staff 00:16:26.15\00:16:29.45 to express those concerns. 00:16:29.48\00:16:30.82 And so, we talked to, 00:16:30.85\00:16:33.79 we called the Hilton that next day. 00:16:33.82\00:16:36.89 And that was the only hotel that was impressed on our mind. 00:16:36.93\00:16:39.06 And we asked if we could, 00:16:39.09\00:16:42.96 and we sent an email that night, actually, 00:16:43.00\00:16:44.97 and we asked if they would be willing 00:16:45.00\00:16:47.84 to house our staff after they do outreach, 00:16:47.87\00:16:51.47 just temporarily, so they can clean up, 00:16:51.51\00:16:53.31 get cleaned up and then go back to their family. 00:16:53.34\00:16:55.78 And they said, they said, "You know what, Eric, 00:16:55.81\00:16:59.61 it's funny you ask us, we're actually housing 00:16:59.65\00:17:01.28 the National Guard here. 00:17:01.32\00:17:02.92 Yeah, we have extra rooms for your staff, 00:17:02.95\00:17:04.75 we'll give you up to four rooms for your staff to go and stay 00:17:04.79\00:17:08.79 and clean up and even stay the night 00:17:08.82\00:17:10.59 if that's what they feel they need to do, 00:17:10.63\00:17:12.93 and then go back out there to work." 00:17:12.96\00:17:14.60 So that was a huge blessing for our staff 00:17:14.63\00:17:17.23 to be able to have that, be able to stay 00:17:17.27\00:17:19.97 away from their family during that time. 00:17:20.00\00:17:22.94 You know, not risk to spread to their family, so... 00:17:22.97\00:17:25.87 Absolutely. 00:17:25.91\00:17:27.71 Now, touch on, who was, 00:17:27.74\00:17:32.31 he was kind of a testimony as to the Ministry of SALT. 00:17:32.35\00:17:37.25 And unfortunately, he's no longer with us. 00:17:37.29\00:17:40.09 But talk a little bit about Pat? 00:17:40.12\00:17:43.39 Yeah, so Patrick, man, 00:17:43.43\00:17:45.46 he was a huge blessing to us, man. 00:17:45.49\00:17:47.83 He started in 2019 with us, beginning of 2019, 00:17:47.86\00:17:52.30 he got a shower with us. 00:17:52.33\00:17:53.70 He's experiencing homelessness. 00:17:53.74\00:17:55.57 And he was so grateful 00:17:55.60\00:17:57.44 that he received the shower from us 00:17:57.47\00:17:58.81 that he actually wanted to help with the cleaning. 00:17:58.84\00:18:01.24 So he cleaned the shower after each person cleaned. 00:18:01.28\00:18:04.78 And so, and he was, he wanted to volunteer with us. 00:18:04.81\00:18:07.22 So what he would do is every, every time we came out, 00:18:07.25\00:18:10.05 he would come out, 00:18:10.09\00:18:11.42 and he would clean the showers after each person 00:18:11.45\00:18:13.56 and sanitize and all that stuff. 00:18:13.59\00:18:16.79 And so when COVID hit, we were hiring staff, 00:18:16.83\00:18:20.53 that was only natural that we'd hire him, you know? 00:18:20.56\00:18:22.96 He used to call the shower trailer, his baby, you know, 00:18:23.00\00:18:25.43 'cause he knew everything about it, you know, 00:18:25.47\00:18:27.27 we had to teach him everything about it and all that. 00:18:27.30\00:18:30.31 And so as soon as we hired him, 00:18:30.34\00:18:32.87 that's when the Hilton came through. 00:18:32.91\00:18:34.64 And so he was able to stay at the Hilton. 00:18:34.68\00:18:36.21 So his homelessness ended at that point. 00:18:36.24\00:18:38.08 As soon as we hired him, the plan was, 00:18:38.11\00:18:41.55 and what we were doing was we're putting away money 00:18:41.58\00:18:44.29 for each hour that he worked. 00:18:44.32\00:18:45.65 So at the end of that three month period 00:18:45.69\00:18:47.69 of that Hilton stay, we get him a place to live. 00:18:47.72\00:18:51.23 So fast forward, 00:18:51.26\00:18:52.69 that was in March that we hired him, 00:18:52.73\00:18:54.36 end of March. 00:18:54.40\00:18:55.73 Fast forward two or three months, 00:18:55.76\00:18:58.27 it was in June, he started to limp. 00:18:58.30\00:19:00.37 And we didn't know what that was about, 00:19:00.40\00:19:02.34 you know, we told him, "Hey, Pat, 00:19:02.37\00:19:04.11 why don't you get this checked out?" 00:19:04.14\00:19:05.47 You know? And he's like, "No, I'm good. 00:19:05.51\00:19:07.41 I'm good. I'm okay. 00:19:07.44\00:19:09.14 You know, I need to work I need to." 00:19:09.18\00:19:10.78 And we're like, "No man, you can go, 00:19:10.81\00:19:12.45 you can, you know, go get checked out." 00:19:12.48\00:19:14.08 He didn't want to get checked out, you know. 00:19:14.12\00:19:16.55 Until the pain became so unbearable in July 00:19:16.58\00:19:21.22 that that he was like, "You know what? 00:19:21.26\00:19:23.29 Yeah, I'm going to go to the hospital." 00:19:23.32\00:19:25.99 So one of our staff members and him went to the hospital, 00:19:26.03\00:19:28.16 to the ER, they checked him out 00:19:28.20\00:19:30.50 and they found out he had stage four lung cancer 00:19:30.53\00:19:34.27 that had metastasized and spread to his hip 00:19:34.30\00:19:37.01 and that's why he was limping. 00:19:37.04\00:19:40.01 So, you know, that was around the time 00:19:40.04\00:19:42.54 the Hilton was, part was ending. 00:19:42.58\00:19:45.05 And so we what we needed to do was we were planning 00:19:45.08\00:19:48.25 to get him a place to live, 00:19:48.28\00:19:49.62 but instead we just got him a hotel. 00:19:49.65\00:19:51.15 That was his request near the downtown 00:19:51.19\00:19:53.29 so we could say bye to his family and to us. 00:19:53.32\00:19:56.19 He wanted to leave the hospital, 00:19:56.22\00:19:57.56 he didn't want to stay 00:19:57.59\00:19:58.93 'cause of the COVID restrictions, no visitors. 00:19:58.96\00:20:00.33 We created such a deep relationship with him, 00:20:00.36\00:20:02.06 he just didn't want to be there alone, you know? 00:20:02.10\00:20:05.73 And so his last request in that hotel room 00:20:05.77\00:20:10.47 was to be baptized. 00:20:10.51\00:20:11.84 Wow. 00:20:11.87\00:20:13.21 And so we brought a pastor over, 00:20:13.24\00:20:15.61 he baptized him just in the bathtub there 00:20:15.64\00:20:17.21 'cause he couldn't move too much. 00:20:17.25\00:20:19.81 And then shortly after he moved to hospice, 00:20:19.85\00:20:22.58 and I remember that last day, 00:20:22.62\00:20:24.32 my wife and I visited him right when he moved to hospice. 00:20:24.35\00:20:27.92 We prayed with him, we spent some time with him, 00:20:27.96\00:20:29.69 talked with him. 00:20:29.72\00:20:31.26 And the next morning is when he passed away. 00:20:31.29\00:20:34.40 So it, you know, we're happy that, 00:20:34.43\00:20:38.63 'cause we know that we're going to see him in heaven. 00:20:38.67\00:20:40.30 Yes. 00:20:40.34\00:20:41.67 But it's sad that we lost him for now, 00:20:41.70\00:20:44.41 you know, and he was such a beautiful part 00:20:44.44\00:20:46.98 of the organization and really hit us hard. 00:20:47.01\00:20:49.51 But, you know, 00:20:49.54\00:20:51.05 where we know at the resurrection, 00:20:51.08\00:20:53.98 he'll be there, and he'll be in a perfect body. 00:20:54.02\00:20:56.12 Yeah. 00:20:56.15\00:20:57.49 And we'll be able to just connect again, 00:20:57.52\00:21:00.29 you know, so... Amen. 00:21:00.32\00:21:01.66 Yeah. Amen. 00:21:01.69\00:21:03.63 Let's transition into the mental health realm 00:21:03.66\00:21:08.00 for a moment. 00:21:08.03\00:21:09.50 I would imagine that, you know, 00:21:09.53\00:21:10.93 there are a lot of mental health issues 00:21:10.97\00:21:13.17 with some of the homeless population. 00:21:13.20\00:21:16.17 So what kind of programs 00:21:16.20\00:21:18.37 do you have in place to deal with that? 00:21:18.41\00:21:21.31 Yeah, you know, that's a great question. 00:21:21.34\00:21:23.41 Mental health is a huge part of what leads people 00:21:23.45\00:21:28.18 to homelessness. 00:21:28.22\00:21:30.29 And not just mental health, 00:21:30.32\00:21:32.05 you know, even I believe 00:21:32.09\00:21:34.22 that the cure for homelessness 00:21:34.26\00:21:36.26 is not necessarily more housing. 00:21:36.29\00:21:38.39 I believe the cure for homelessness is relationship. 00:21:38.43\00:21:41.73 Some of the most productive housing programs, 00:21:41.76\00:21:44.97 the most effective housing program that's out there, 00:21:45.00\00:21:48.07 the top four reasons why it doesn't work out 00:21:48.10\00:21:50.51 is all due to social integration. 00:21:50.54\00:21:52.84 So someone would rather be on the street 00:21:52.87\00:21:57.71 with their friends than in a home by themselves. 00:21:57.75\00:22:01.15 And so relationship is key, I believe. 00:22:01.18\00:22:03.85 And so when we look at case management, 00:22:03.89\00:22:06.49 we actually just started a case management program 00:22:06.52\00:22:09.79 in January of 2021. 00:22:09.82\00:22:11.93 And we brought on two social workers. 00:22:11.96\00:22:15.13 One's a licensed clinical social worker, 00:22:15.16\00:22:16.60 the other one is a master's level social worker. 00:22:16.63\00:22:18.87 And we actually have a picture of them just to kind 00:22:18.90\00:22:20.47 of introduce them to everybody, 00:22:20.50\00:22:21.84 but they're running the Social Work program. 00:22:21.87\00:22:24.71 And in the first half of this year, 00:22:24.74\00:22:27.81 or first semester of this year, 00:22:27.84\00:22:29.74 they were running that program, 00:22:29.78\00:22:31.11 and they had six Social Work interns 00:22:31.15\00:22:32.85 from the local university, 00:22:32.88\00:22:34.35 a total of eight of them, creating relationships, 00:22:34.38\00:22:36.95 assessing their need, creating a plan with them, 00:22:36.99\00:22:40.92 making referrals to other organizations 00:22:40.96\00:22:42.76 that could help them on their walk 00:22:42.79\00:22:45.63 to ending their homelessness, and also filling gaps, 00:22:45.66\00:22:49.46 you know, some organizations can't meet all that need. 00:22:49.50\00:22:53.74 So when we find out there's not a need 00:22:53.77\00:22:55.37 that can be met by another organization, we step in. 00:22:55.40\00:22:58.84 We step in with whatever funding we have 00:22:58.87\00:23:01.08 to meet that particular need. 00:23:01.11\00:23:02.44 So the case management program has been crucial in helping 00:23:02.48\00:23:06.41 to end the homelessness of the people that we meet. 00:23:06.45\00:23:09.55 Wow. Yeah, that's incredible. 00:23:09.58\00:23:12.55 Now, I remember last time you were here, 00:23:12.59\00:23:14.72 and I think this was last time you were here. 00:23:14.76\00:23:16.73 We sat down, and we were talking, 00:23:16.76\00:23:18.96 and you mentioned something about a laundry trailer. 00:23:18.99\00:23:22.60 How does the laundry trailer even work? 00:23:22.63\00:23:25.20 Yeah, that's the laundry trailer is really amazing. 00:23:25.23\00:23:30.71 It was double the cost of the shower trailer. Okay. 00:23:30.74\00:23:34.81 But we had, we have actually six commercial washers, 00:23:34.84\00:23:38.31 and six commercial dryers. 00:23:38.35\00:23:40.55 And what it is, 00:23:40.58\00:23:41.92 is someone that's experiencing homelessness 00:23:41.95\00:23:43.72 can come do their laundry for free. 00:23:43.75\00:23:47.12 And while they're doing their laundry, 00:23:47.16\00:23:48.82 they can sit with a case manager, 00:23:48.86\00:23:50.53 they can go take a shower, you know, 00:23:50.56\00:23:52.66 we also have haircuts, they can go get their hair cut. 00:23:52.69\00:23:55.86 And so it's really a, you know, 00:23:55.90\00:23:58.37 we're aiming to be a comprehensive solution 00:23:58.40\00:24:01.64 to not only meeting the basic needs, 00:24:01.67\00:24:03.71 but also helping end their homelessness. 00:24:03.74\00:24:06.01 And then at the same time, 00:24:06.04\00:24:07.51 you know, meet their spiritual needs as well. 00:24:07.54\00:24:10.41 But, yeah, the laundry trailer 00:24:10.45\00:24:12.95 has been a huge blessing in helping those 00:24:12.98\00:24:15.18 because I mean, you think about it, 00:24:15.22\00:24:16.55 a lot of the people that are experiencing homelessness, 00:24:16.58\00:24:18.25 they rely on clothing donations, right? 00:24:18.29\00:24:21.19 But when they get those clothing donations, 00:24:21.22\00:24:23.06 if they can't wash them, 00:24:23.09\00:24:24.43 they just have to throw them out. 00:24:24.46\00:24:25.79 They're not going to carry on their back dirty clothes 00:24:25.83\00:24:27.66 with them everywhere. 00:24:27.70\00:24:29.46 And so now with this laundry trailer, 00:24:29.50\00:24:32.03 they can come and wash their clothing 00:24:32.07\00:24:33.74 and reuse that clothing. 00:24:33.77\00:24:35.14 Yes. And underwear and socks have been a huge cost to us. 00:24:35.17\00:24:39.17 But now they can wash them. 00:24:39.21\00:24:40.78 It's also helping save money for the organization. 00:24:40.81\00:24:42.84 So it's really just a win-win on all sides, 00:24:42.88\00:24:46.48 bringing that service in. 00:24:46.51\00:24:48.22 Absolutely. 00:24:48.25\00:24:49.58 Now with all of this stuff, I would imagine 00:24:49.62\00:24:51.15 that it's an expensive operation to run. 00:24:51.19\00:24:55.92 So you have to have access to resources, 00:24:55.96\00:24:58.66 you have to have access to finances, 00:24:58.69\00:25:01.30 all of those things. 00:25:01.33\00:25:03.50 Speak on maybe some corporate supporters? 00:25:03.53\00:25:07.24 Yeah, so we've had a ton of organizations 00:25:07.27\00:25:11.54 and businesses support us. 00:25:11.57\00:25:13.71 Aven Health has been, 00:25:13.74\00:25:17.85 recently became a sponsor with and they donated 00:25:17.88\00:25:21.42 some funding to help with the operations 00:25:21.45\00:25:23.59 of the shower trailer. 00:25:23.62\00:25:25.42 We had another company called Simply Healthcare 00:25:25.45\00:25:28.26 donate about 12,000, to help with the laundry 00:25:28.29\00:25:31.43 and the shower trailer. 00:25:31.46\00:25:32.79 So it's been amazing to see Florida Conference 00:25:32.83\00:25:34.86 of Seventh-day Adventists has been a yearly supporter 00:25:34.90\00:25:37.47 of the organization. 00:25:37.50\00:25:40.10 We even have Coke, Coca Cola, 00:25:40.14\00:25:42.20 they're donating waters and orange juice to us 00:25:42.24\00:25:44.94 every quarter, pallets of these things. 00:25:44.97\00:25:48.28 And there's so many other organizations 00:25:48.31\00:25:50.35 and companies that are donating different things to us 00:25:50.38\00:25:53.25 that is, it really encompasses what our acronym is, 00:25:53.28\00:25:56.69 you know, service and love together. 00:25:56.72\00:25:58.25 You have the local government supporting, 00:25:58.29\00:26:00.89 you have corporations and for profits 00:26:00.92\00:26:03.59 and other organizations supporting, 00:26:03.63\00:26:05.43 and then we have our donors 00:26:05.46\00:26:07.10 through just our own nonprofit network 00:26:07.13\00:26:10.47 and our donors and our volunteers supporting. 00:26:10.50\00:26:12.43 So you have all three sectors coming together 00:26:12.47\00:26:15.90 to make a difference in the community. 00:26:15.94\00:26:17.71 And SALT is a vehicle for that. 00:26:17.74\00:26:19.61 And that's really what we envision. 00:26:19.64\00:26:21.91 And we're so excited to see that all kind of come together. 00:26:21.94\00:26:24.65 Yeah. 00:26:24.68\00:26:26.01 And you know the interesting thing 00:26:26.05\00:26:27.38 is like these organizations, 00:26:27.42\00:26:28.75 these companies that are helping out, 00:26:28.78\00:26:32.25 I can only imagine the witness 00:26:32.29\00:26:34.86 that it is that your organization is to them. 00:26:34.89\00:26:38.36 So it'll be interesting to see when we get into heaven, 00:26:38.39\00:26:41.26 how many people are there as a result of the work 00:26:41.30\00:26:44.63 that SALT is doing? 00:26:44.67\00:26:46.84 Amen. Yeah, I'd be excited to see that too. 00:26:46.87\00:26:49.90 I know our team is so dedicated to the unsheltered, 00:26:49.94\00:26:54.28 they all, all of them love the people that we serve. 00:26:54.31\00:26:59.31 And you can tell and it's genuine 00:26:59.35\00:27:01.05 and that's the word on the street. 00:27:01.08\00:27:02.55 You know, we hear from our friends all the time. 00:27:02.58\00:27:05.99 The one thing that we love about you 00:27:06.02\00:27:07.66 is that you guys actually care. 00:27:07.69\00:27:09.26 Yes. You know you love us, you care about us. 00:27:09.29\00:27:12.63 Actually with the, I think them witnessing or starting 00:27:12.66\00:27:17.43 with food then asking them, 00:27:17.47\00:27:18.80 "Hey, what do you guys need?" 00:27:18.83\00:27:20.80 "Clothing." Clothing trailer pops up. 00:27:20.84\00:27:23.10 "What else do you guys need?" "Showers." 00:27:23.14\00:27:24.94 Shower trailer pops up. 00:27:24.97\00:27:26.54 "What else do you need?" "Laundry." 00:27:26.57\00:27:27.91 Laundry trailer pops. 00:27:27.94\00:27:29.28 They see it, they see us starting from almost nothing 00:27:29.31\00:27:33.28 to now growing and providing all these needs, 00:27:33.31\00:27:36.28 and they respect that. 00:27:36.32\00:27:38.15 And that's really been a cool thing 00:27:38.19\00:27:41.92 and something that's helped us create relationship with them. 00:27:41.96\00:27:44.39 Yeah. 00:27:44.43\00:27:45.76 And even going into the city support, 00:27:45.79\00:27:47.96 I know with the laundry trailer we talked about. 00:27:48.00\00:27:50.43 We actually have some pictures to show in a video. 00:27:50.47\00:27:54.50 And with the laundry trailer, we did a launch day. 00:27:54.54\00:27:59.61 And it was April 15 of 2021. 00:27:59.64\00:28:03.08 And on that day, the mayor of Orlando came out, 00:28:03.11\00:28:06.88 local commissioners came out, 00:28:06.92\00:28:08.25 that's actually our team right there, 00:28:08.28\00:28:10.39 not all of our team, 00:28:10.42\00:28:11.75 but that's a portion of our team. 00:28:11.79\00:28:13.12 Some of our intern staff, 00:28:13.15\00:28:14.82 volunteers, we have our security guard there. 00:28:14.86\00:28:18.53 And so the next picture that pops up, 00:28:18.56\00:28:23.16 you'll see some of the other people 00:28:23.20\00:28:26.97 that were present, but we had the commissioners 00:28:27.00\00:28:29.04 of the city there. 00:28:29.07\00:28:30.41 And so, and then we have Simply Healthcare, 00:28:30.44\00:28:33.24 which was a huge sponsor for us. 00:28:33.27\00:28:34.91 They came and all of us together cut the ribbon 00:28:34.94\00:28:39.18 to launch this laundry trailer. 00:28:39.21\00:28:41.32 And so it was really, really beautiful. 00:28:41.35\00:28:44.02 Actually, the mayor surprised us 00:28:44.05\00:28:46.39 and for the work that SALT was doing, 00:28:46.42\00:28:49.12 the mayor actually made a proclamation. 00:28:49.16\00:28:51.46 He proclaimed that April 15th 00:28:51.49\00:28:54.33 be SALT Day in the city of Orlando. 00:28:54.36\00:28:56.83 Wow. Every April 15. 00:28:56.87\00:28:58.23 That's actually a picture of the proclamation right there 00:28:58.27\00:29:01.20 that he gave us. 00:29:01.24\00:29:02.57 We actually framed it and put it in our office 00:29:02.60\00:29:04.87 and kept part of the ribbon to put next to it. 00:29:04.91\00:29:07.81 It was a huge surprise, 00:29:07.84\00:29:10.05 but it was a testimony too, you know? 00:29:10.08\00:29:12.28 So SALT has its own day. 00:29:12.31\00:29:14.65 SALT has its own day in the city of Orlando. Yeah. 00:29:14.68\00:29:17.02 And what day is that again? That's April 15. 00:29:17.05\00:29:19.22 April 15. Yeah, SALT Day. 00:29:19.25\00:29:21.19 Yeah. Wow. 00:29:21.22\00:29:22.56 So it shows, it showed us and it really spoke to us, 00:29:22.59\00:29:28.23 because it showed that that city of Orlando 00:29:28.26\00:29:30.43 truly believes in what's happening here. 00:29:30.47\00:29:33.77 We even had someone that was there that rejected 00:29:33.80\00:29:39.17 our proposals to operate three days 00:29:39.21\00:29:41.94 a week back in 2019. 00:29:41.98\00:29:44.91 And that person that was at that launch day, 00:29:44.95\00:29:48.98 we spoke a day or two after 00:29:49.02\00:29:51.22 and he said he wanted to talk to me, 00:29:51.25\00:29:53.56 we set some time to talk. 00:29:53.59\00:29:55.89 And he said, "Eric, it's clear that God is with you guys. 00:29:55.92\00:30:00.96 It's evident. 00:30:01.00\00:30:02.33 I'm sorry that we didn't approve this sooner, 00:30:02.36\00:30:05.07 but it's evident God is with you. 00:30:05.10\00:30:06.43 I'm so glad that it didn't discourage you 00:30:06.47\00:30:08.30 and you guys continued to move forward." 00:30:08.34\00:30:10.34 And that meant so much coming from him. Yes. 00:30:10.37\00:30:14.28 And so it was just a huge blessing all around 00:30:14.31\00:30:17.95 that day and the day surrounding. 00:30:17.98\00:30:20.52 Yeah, and that was huge of him to come back and say, 00:30:20.55\00:30:24.29 "Look, I'm sorry, 00:30:24.32\00:30:25.82 like we should have done this sooner." 00:30:25.85\00:30:27.69 So, he humbled himself and came to you with that, 00:30:27.72\00:30:31.19 that's awesome. 00:30:31.23\00:30:32.59 Right. So you have the video. 00:30:32.63\00:30:35.36 We have a video too. 00:30:35.40\00:30:36.73 Yeah, there was a video taken that day. 00:30:36.77\00:30:38.10 We can go ahead and show that local news story. 00:30:38.13\00:30:42.14 Awesome. 00:30:42.17\00:30:44.31 Welcome back. 00:30:44.34\00:30:45.67 You might not have known, today is actually 00:30:45.71\00:30:47.04 National Laundry Day, 00:30:47.08\00:30:48.41 I'm guessing most probably didn't find a reason 00:30:48.44\00:30:49.78 to celebrate. 00:30:49.81\00:30:51.15 Yeah, I had no idea but the city of Orlando 00:30:51.18\00:30:52.81 was celebrating by launching 00:30:52.85\00:30:54.38 a new first of its kind mobile laundry service 00:30:54.42\00:30:57.49 for the homeless. 00:30:57.52\00:30:58.85 Fox 35 Amanda McKenzie shows us. 00:30:58.89\00:31:02.02 For many people living on the streets, 00:31:02.06\00:31:03.76 finding a place to shower, 00:31:03.79\00:31:05.29 wash clothes and other basic amenities is hard to come by. 00:31:05.33\00:31:09.06 Now, there is a new mobile laundry service 00:31:09.10\00:31:11.43 with six commercial washers and dryers all free 00:31:11.47\00:31:14.40 to use for anyone experiencing homelessness. 00:31:14.44\00:31:17.77 This laundry trailer is a new addition 00:31:17.81\00:31:19.77 to other free services like a portable shower trailer 00:31:19.81\00:31:22.91 with space for haircuts. 00:31:22.94\00:31:24.38 You think about it, taking a shower 00:31:24.41\00:31:26.25 if you don't have clean clothing 00:31:26.28\00:31:28.08 to put on after you do that 00:31:28.12\00:31:29.88 certainly just doesn't make good hygiene sense. 00:31:29.92\00:31:32.92 The city is partnering with the organization SALT, 00:31:32.95\00:31:35.76 which stands for Service and Love Together, 00:31:35.79\00:31:38.43 as well as Simply Healthcare to bring this trailer 00:31:38.46\00:31:40.83 to shelters four days a week. 00:31:40.86\00:31:42.96 Officials estimate they will be able 00:31:43.00\00:31:44.43 to complete up to 240 loads of laundry per week. 00:31:44.47\00:31:48.40 It's all part of the city's efforts 00:31:48.44\00:31:49.90 to ensure every resident has their basic needs 00:31:49.94\00:31:52.61 of clothing, food and hygiene met. 00:31:52.64\00:31:55.71 As we work and try to find ways to end homelessness, 00:31:55.74\00:32:00.45 we know 00:32:00.48\00:32:02.35 that we have to do something in the interim, 00:32:02.38\00:32:06.92 to make sure that our homeless residents 00:32:06.96\00:32:11.63 here in the city of Orlando 00:32:11.66\00:32:14.43 know that they are not forgotten. 00:32:14.46\00:32:18.37 We want to let them know that we don't just pass by 00:32:18.40\00:32:23.20 and see a shadow. 00:32:23.24\00:32:25.84 We see them. 00:32:25.87\00:32:28.78 While most people see laundry as a chore, 00:32:28.81\00:32:30.95 today on National Laundry Day, 00:32:30.98\00:32:32.71 there is reason to celebrate this new amenity 00:32:32.75\00:32:35.38 in the city that will help our neighbors 00:32:35.42\00:32:37.22 without a home have one less thing to worry about. 00:32:37.25\00:32:40.56 In Orlando, Amanda McKenzie, Fox 35 News. 00:32:40.59\00:32:44.89 Wow. 00:32:44.93\00:32:46.26 Now that's incredible. God is good, yeah. 00:32:46.29\00:32:48.43 Amen. Amen. 00:32:48.46\00:32:50.07 Yeah, I wanted to share too, 00:32:50.10\00:32:52.10 you know, it's amazing how more funding 00:32:52.13\00:32:56.24 the city has been very generous 00:32:56.27\00:32:58.14 and helping to fund this operation 00:32:58.17\00:32:59.67 because they know that it's making a difference. 00:32:59.71\00:33:02.44 And so in 2020, 00:33:02.48\00:33:04.88 we operate about three to four days a week, 00:33:04.91\00:33:08.88 and really started operating that way around March. 00:33:08.92\00:33:13.82 So we served about 1510 unduplicated people 00:33:13.86\00:33:18.09 with over 30,000 units of service. 00:33:18.13\00:33:21.33 And we found that 30, about 30% of them, 00:33:21.36\00:33:24.90 after services with us, 00:33:24.93\00:33:27.00 took the next step to end their homelessness 00:33:27.04\00:33:29.20 through a coordinated community effort. 00:33:29.24\00:33:31.67 We also found that 17% after services with us 00:33:31.71\00:33:35.21 transition to shelter housing 00:33:35.24\00:33:37.58 through a coordinated community effort as well. 00:33:37.61\00:33:40.15 So those metrics are showing the kind of the difference 00:33:40.18\00:33:43.95 that the services are making in the community. 00:33:43.99\00:33:46.19 And I think that's why they're continuing to support. 00:33:46.22\00:33:49.02 And not only them, but our donors, 00:33:49.06\00:33:51.39 you know, we can't do it without our donors. 00:33:51.43\00:33:54.33 The city doesn't fund everything. 00:33:54.36\00:33:56.56 They fund a portion, but they don't fund everything. 00:33:56.60\00:33:58.43 So our donors are really key in helping 00:33:58.47\00:34:00.97 to keep this operation going as well, so... 00:34:01.00\00:34:03.07 Yeah, and I love that 00:34:03.10\00:34:04.84 because you're, there's a problem, 00:34:04.87\00:34:07.14 and then you have the solution. 00:34:07.18\00:34:08.98 Another problem arises, there's a solution. 00:34:09.01\00:34:11.21 Another problem arises, there's the solution. 00:34:11.25\00:34:13.52 I remember you coming on and talking about, 00:34:13.55\00:34:15.72 you need a change trailer. 00:34:15.75\00:34:18.02 Then you got the change trailer, 00:34:18.05\00:34:19.85 laundry trailer, shower trailer, 00:34:19.89\00:34:22.16 you got each one of those things, 00:34:22.19\00:34:23.86 and God has continued to bless the Ministry of SALT. 00:34:23.89\00:34:28.30 And as a result, it's blessing so many, 00:34:28.33\00:34:31.67 and we're grateful to our viewers for supporting 00:34:31.70\00:34:35.20 that initiative as well. 00:34:35.24\00:34:37.27 So, talk to us about the spiritual component, 00:34:37.31\00:34:40.34 because I know that this whole thing embodies 00:34:40.38\00:34:42.91 practical Christianity. 00:34:42.94\00:34:44.65 But where does maybe evangelism come into play 00:34:44.68\00:34:47.62 or pastoral ministry? 00:34:47.65\00:34:49.18 Yeah, that's a good question too. 00:34:49.22\00:34:50.95 So we, you know, our mission is to really exemplify 00:34:50.99\00:34:54.09 the character of Christ, you know? 00:34:54.12\00:34:55.89 And, you know, if we are not, 00:34:55.92\00:34:59.23 if we are doing these services, 00:34:59.26\00:35:01.10 and not pointing to God as the One who's enabled, 00:35:01.13\00:35:04.80 who is enabling us and motivating us 00:35:04.83\00:35:07.94 and creating these opportunities for us 00:35:07.97\00:35:10.11 to meet these needs, then I feel like 00:35:10.14\00:35:11.51 we are failing in what we're doing. 00:35:11.54\00:35:14.91 We actually implemented a, you know, 00:35:14.94\00:35:17.71 we would meet spiritual needs throughout the life 00:35:17.75\00:35:20.08 of the organization in different ways. 00:35:20.12\00:35:21.58 We, before, we just recently added an outreach pastor 00:35:21.62\00:35:26.19 to the staff. 00:35:26.22\00:35:28.19 Before that, you know, 00:35:28.22\00:35:29.76 we would just kind of all on our own, 00:35:29.79\00:35:31.66 just create relationships and there'll be some baptisms 00:35:31.69\00:35:34.66 that will result from that. 00:35:34.70\00:35:36.10 But adding this outreach pastor has been very crucial 00:35:36.13\00:35:39.30 in really being more intentional in meeting 00:35:39.33\00:35:42.17 that spiritual need. 00:35:42.20\00:35:44.47 The cool thing about this pastor is, 00:35:44.51\00:35:46.27 you know, he's a very humble guy. 00:35:46.31\00:35:48.91 And so he's not afraid to go into the shower trailer 00:35:48.94\00:35:51.71 and clean a toilet after someone uses it, 00:35:51.75\00:35:53.98 and clean a shower after someone uses it. 00:35:54.02\00:35:56.79 And the beautiful thing about that 00:35:56.82\00:35:58.69 is our clients are friends, they see that, 00:35:58.72\00:36:01.56 they see him doing that, 00:36:01.59\00:36:03.59 and they have even more respect for him as a spiritual leader, 00:36:03.63\00:36:06.90 as a pastor. 00:36:06.93\00:36:08.26 They actually know him as their pastor, 00:36:08.30\00:36:11.63 the pastor of the unsheltered. 00:36:11.67\00:36:13.94 And so he does services twice a month for them. 00:36:13.97\00:36:18.07 We actually have a partnership with a local Adventist Church, 00:36:18.11\00:36:21.91 Lighthouse community. 00:36:21.94\00:36:23.75 And so they have a box truck, 00:36:23.78\00:36:26.18 the side of it kind of comes down and turns to a stage. 00:36:26.21\00:36:29.52 So he actually preaches twice a month, 00:36:29.55\00:36:32.42 and he, we do a service for them, 00:36:32.45\00:36:34.06 we get different Adventist churches to come out, 00:36:34.09\00:36:36.12 and really kind of do music and worship. 00:36:36.16\00:36:38.03 And then he comes and he speaks. 00:36:38.06\00:36:40.53 He's also starting a weekly Bible study. 00:36:40.56\00:36:44.60 So that is starting, actually, next week, 00:36:44.63\00:36:48.60 it's going to be starting. 00:36:48.64\00:36:49.97 And so that weekly Bible study is going to be key, 00:36:50.01\00:36:53.14 'cause he's already created so many relationships, 00:36:53.17\00:36:55.38 he spent maybe three months 00:36:55.41\00:36:57.95 creating relationships with them, 00:36:57.98\00:36:59.31 and just working the outreach part. 00:36:59.35\00:37:01.82 And now that he's created these relationships, 00:37:01.85\00:37:03.82 he's starting that Bible study to invite the friends 00:37:03.85\00:37:06.25 that he's made to these studies. 00:37:06.29\00:37:08.99 So we're excited to see what that outcome will be. 00:37:09.02\00:37:11.76 But it's a huge thing. 00:37:11.79\00:37:14.80 I mean, we've had people approach him 00:37:14.83\00:37:16.30 that want to be anointed, they'll bring their own oil 00:37:16.33\00:37:19.60 and everything. 00:37:19.63\00:37:20.97 Can you anoint me? 00:37:21.00\00:37:22.34 I need anointing because of X, Y and Z going on in my life. 00:37:22.37\00:37:25.27 People that have been struggling with addiction, 00:37:25.31\00:37:27.08 while they were homeless didn't admit to a case manager 00:37:27.11\00:37:31.55 that they wanted to overcome this addiction. 00:37:31.58\00:37:35.22 But when they talk with him, and they pray with him, 00:37:35.25\00:37:37.75 I want to overcome this addiction, 00:37:37.79\00:37:39.45 I'm willing to do outpatient or inpatient services, 00:37:39.49\00:37:42.92 and then he partners with the case managers 00:37:42.96\00:37:44.63 to make that happen. 00:37:44.66\00:37:45.99 So that spiritual element is, I believe, 00:37:46.03\00:37:48.66 crucial in helping to end homelessness. 00:37:48.70\00:37:51.80 Yes, he's helping people to gain the victory. 00:37:51.83\00:37:54.20 Yes. Yes, that is powerful. 00:37:54.24\00:37:57.24 Now, where are you operating? 00:37:57.27\00:37:59.94 So like, do you have a building now? 00:37:59.97\00:38:02.54 So we have been, 00:38:02.58\00:38:04.88 this is a huge testimony for us. 00:38:04.91\00:38:08.45 We have always wanted to have a building 00:38:08.48\00:38:11.85 or something we can, 'cause we need it. 00:38:11.89\00:38:13.69 You know, we need an administrative office, 00:38:13.72\00:38:15.59 we need a conference room where we can meet, 00:38:15.62\00:38:17.63 we needed a place to store our stuff, 00:38:17.66\00:38:19.79 you know, a case management area, 00:38:19.83\00:38:22.10 you know, we needed those things. 00:38:22.13\00:38:23.47 And so we, back last year, and I'm sorry, 2020, 00:38:23.50\00:38:28.40 we had a partnership, 00:38:28.44\00:38:30.24 we created a partnership with the Christian Service Center. 00:38:30.27\00:38:32.77 The Christian Service Center is an organization in Orlando 00:38:32.81\00:38:35.38 that has other nonprofits there 00:38:35.41\00:38:37.15 that also help the unsheltered population. 00:38:37.18\00:38:40.48 And so we were one of the first 00:38:40.52\00:38:42.15 that were added to that campus. 00:38:42.18\00:38:44.72 And we would help to bring the traffic to that campus 00:38:44.75\00:38:47.22 because of the services that we offer. 00:38:47.26\00:38:50.16 And so the partnership has just grown over the months, 00:38:50.19\00:38:53.60 it's almost, you know, maybe close to a year now. 00:38:53.63\00:38:56.26 And they decided that one of their buildings 00:38:56.30\00:39:00.47 they wanted to give to us, so... 00:39:00.50\00:39:02.74 Wow. 00:39:02.77\00:39:04.11 So they gave us one of their buildings on property 00:39:04.14\00:39:05.47 to be able to work out of to provide 00:39:05.51\00:39:09.01 these essential services. 00:39:09.04\00:39:10.38 So our trailers actually parked right in front of it, 00:39:10.41\00:39:12.55 but now we have that admin office, 00:39:12.58\00:39:14.02 we have a break room, 00:39:14.05\00:39:15.45 we have a conference room, we have a reception area, 00:39:15.48\00:39:20.06 a barber room, 00:39:20.09\00:39:21.42 a case management room, a storage area. 00:39:21.46\00:39:23.06 I mean, it's really an amazing setup that was provided to us. 00:39:23.09\00:39:28.03 And we thank God for it because if it wasn't for Him, 00:39:28.06\00:39:30.63 we, I mean, we did not expect that to happen at all. 00:39:30.67\00:39:35.37 It's a huge blessing. Yeah. 00:39:35.40\00:39:36.81 And look at how God just continues 00:39:36.84\00:39:38.87 to open up all these doors. 00:39:38.91\00:39:40.74 Yeah, He does. 00:39:40.78\00:39:42.21 What has working with SALT and starting SALT, 00:39:42.24\00:39:46.11 what has that done for your faith personally? 00:39:46.15\00:39:49.68 You know, I believe that... 00:39:49.72\00:39:54.09 I believe starting SALT and working with SALT 00:39:54.12\00:39:58.09 has been instrumental in helping my faith to grow. 00:39:58.13\00:40:02.36 And not only helping my faith to grow, but to keep it alive. 00:40:02.40\00:40:08.20 You know, in James it says 00:40:08.24\00:40:10.21 faith without works is dead, right? 00:40:10.24\00:40:12.17 So if there are, if you're not acting on your faith, 00:40:12.21\00:40:15.54 then your faith is slowly dying. 00:40:15.58\00:40:17.91 And so when we act on the things 00:40:17.95\00:40:21.25 that we study in the Word, 00:40:21.28\00:40:23.79 when we act on the things that we believe God 00:40:23.82\00:40:25.75 is calling us to do, it builds our faith, 00:40:25.79\00:40:28.29 like a muscle, right? 00:40:28.32\00:40:30.63 And so the more that I do what I feel God 00:40:30.66\00:40:33.93 is calling me to do, 00:40:33.96\00:40:36.23 the more I believe my faith has grown. 00:40:36.26\00:40:38.73 And so I would say that to anyone out there, 00:40:38.77\00:40:41.44 that is, you know, 00:40:41.47\00:40:44.04 maybe struggling with their faith or feeling like 00:40:44.07\00:40:46.21 their faith is dwindling, to find somewhere, 00:40:46.24\00:40:50.85 you know, maybe volunteering somewhere, 00:40:50.88\00:40:52.71 maybe someone with your church, 00:40:52.75\00:40:55.55 something, maybe something you have a special talent, 00:40:55.58\00:40:59.15 to offer that to the people that are hurting 00:40:59.19\00:41:01.79 or that need it because that's going to help your faith grow. 00:41:01.82\00:41:05.13 It's going to help it grow. 00:41:05.16\00:41:06.49 It's going to build your faith in an amazing way, so... 00:41:06.53\00:41:09.23 Amen. So what is next for SALT? 00:41:09.26\00:41:13.54 What's next? 00:41:13.57\00:41:16.24 So we have figured out 00:41:16.27\00:41:20.51 that what we're doing there in Orlando, 00:41:20.54\00:41:24.18 is not just needed in Orlando, 00:41:24.21\00:41:26.88 it's needed in many other cities. 00:41:26.92\00:41:28.45 We have had, I have had conversations 00:41:28.48\00:41:30.69 specifically with other city officials in other cities 00:41:30.72\00:41:34.06 that have said we want this in our city. 00:41:34.09\00:41:38.03 So what we're trying to do now with God's help 00:41:38.06\00:41:41.06 is duplicate what we have in Orlando. 00:41:41.10\00:41:44.50 And take that model 00:41:44.53\00:41:46.80 and put it in the cities that need it. 00:41:46.84\00:41:51.01 Not every city is able to have a day service center 00:41:51.04\00:41:53.38 for the unsheltered. 00:41:53.41\00:41:54.74 I mean, you need a building, 00:41:54.78\00:41:56.88 a lot of the time the businesses do not want 00:41:56.91\00:41:59.31 a set location where the unsheltered go to 00:41:59.35\00:42:02.52 because they believe it'll affect their business 00:42:02.55\00:42:05.12 or lower property value or, you know, 00:42:05.15\00:42:06.99 there's all those concerns out there. 00:42:07.02\00:42:09.36 Us being mobile diffuses those concerns, 00:42:09.39\00:42:12.93 'cause guess what? 00:42:12.96\00:42:14.30 If something negative is happening in that area, 00:42:14.33\00:42:16.77 we can just move. Yeah. 00:42:16.80\00:42:18.13 You know, and that's something that I think this model needs 00:42:18.17\00:42:22.60 to be duplicated. 00:42:22.64\00:42:23.97 And so we're looking at two other cities right now 00:42:24.01\00:42:26.54 about 20 minutes north of Orlando, 00:42:26.57\00:42:29.14 and there's another city, Daytona, Florida, 00:42:29.18\00:42:31.95 that we're working to try and get in that area, 00:42:31.98\00:42:34.35 we already started operating once a month there. 00:42:34.38\00:42:37.29 But yeah, in Orlando, 00:42:37.32\00:42:38.65 we're actually going to be moving the six days 00:42:38.69\00:42:40.02 a week of service, starting in June of 2021. 00:42:40.06\00:42:44.96 So we'll be doing six days a week, eight hours a day, 00:42:44.99\00:42:47.86 but at the same time working to expand 00:42:47.90\00:42:49.76 and duplicate the model. 00:42:49.80\00:42:51.63 Wow. 00:42:51.67\00:42:53.00 So when you're expanding, 00:42:53.03\00:42:54.50 and you're duplicating this model, 00:42:54.54\00:42:55.87 do you go to these places and set it up? 00:42:55.90\00:42:59.11 And then like, make sure they're running properly? 00:42:59.14\00:43:02.38 And all of that stuff? Like what does that look like? 00:43:02.41\00:43:05.31 So yeah, we would want to start there at least once a month. 00:43:05.35\00:43:08.95 Okay. 00:43:08.98\00:43:10.32 So that we can kind of get a feel for the people 00:43:10.35\00:43:12.32 in the area, see what the actual need is, 00:43:12.35\00:43:15.06 talk to the people there. 00:43:15.09\00:43:16.73 Because we don't want, again, 00:43:16.76\00:43:18.09 we're not just going to take what we have 00:43:18.13\00:43:19.79 and just blindly offer it and say, 00:43:19.83\00:43:22.00 "Hey, I think you need this. 00:43:22.03\00:43:23.37 So let's do this." 00:43:23.40\00:43:24.73 We want to make sure that it's catered to every area. 00:43:24.77\00:43:27.67 So we would actually have to do some research 00:43:27.70\00:43:29.47 and some surveying, talk to the city officials, 00:43:29.50\00:43:31.97 talk to the local nonprofits, 00:43:32.01\00:43:33.51 and that's what we've been doing. 00:43:33.54\00:43:35.01 Nice. 00:43:35.04\00:43:36.38 And there have been so many high profile supporters of us 00:43:36.41\00:43:40.52 expanding this, that we believe just by 2021 00:43:40.55\00:43:44.52 will be in two other cities by the end of 2021. 00:43:44.55\00:43:48.29 So we'll see what God has in store. 00:43:48.32\00:43:51.09 But you know, again, it's something 00:43:51.13\00:43:54.76 that God is really going to have to provide 00:43:54.80\00:43:58.03 that funding for us to get there. 00:43:58.07\00:44:00.04 And that's kind of what we're praying about now, 00:44:00.07\00:44:02.34 is we know it's needed, it's been expressed 00:44:02.37\00:44:04.84 that there's a need there 00:44:04.87\00:44:06.24 but once the funding comes through, 00:44:06.27\00:44:09.18 then we're able to do this. 00:44:09.21\00:44:10.55 And so donation is going to be a huge part of that. 00:44:10.58\00:44:13.52 Yes, yes. 00:44:13.55\00:44:15.22 What advice would you have 00:44:15.25\00:44:16.58 for the individual that may say, 00:44:16.62\00:44:18.89 "Well, you know, I feel like God wants me 00:44:18.92\00:44:21.92 to start something, but I don't know what it is?" 00:44:21.96\00:44:24.69 Or for the individual that might, 00:44:24.73\00:44:28.13 you know, has, maybe he always thought 00:44:28.16\00:44:30.73 about or she always thought about 00:44:30.77\00:44:32.73 starting the ministry, 00:44:32.77\00:44:34.44 but they don't know what steps to take. 00:44:34.47\00:44:36.14 Yeah. 00:44:36.17\00:44:37.94 So, the simplest thing I can say, 00:44:37.97\00:44:41.98 and the easiest thing I can say without going into a whole, 00:44:42.01\00:44:45.28 you know, seminar of what to do, 00:44:45.31\00:44:47.42 but I would say is do something. 00:44:47.45\00:44:50.32 So and I say that because I didn't know 00:44:50.35\00:44:53.46 what I was called to do. 00:44:53.49\00:44:54.89 So what I did is I worked, 00:44:54.92\00:44:56.79 I tried every type of ministry, 00:44:56.83\00:44:59.76 I tried different volunteer opportunities. 00:44:59.79\00:45:02.16 'Cause I didn't know, I didn't even feel like 00:45:05.43\00:45:07.27 I had any talents. 00:45:07.30\00:45:08.64 You know what I mean? I just tried everything. 00:45:08.67\00:45:12.01 And when you do that, 00:45:12.04\00:45:13.84 God, I believe God sees that, and He honors that. 00:45:13.88\00:45:16.64 And He'll make it clear what it is He wants you to do, 00:45:16.68\00:45:20.22 you know, for Him. 00:45:20.25\00:45:21.58 And so every area is different, 00:45:21.62\00:45:23.05 you know, and maybe someone that's watching right now, 00:45:23.08\00:45:25.05 they don't have a high homeless population 00:45:25.09\00:45:27.72 in their area, but there might be need in another area. 00:45:27.76\00:45:30.13 So that's something that I would say 00:45:30.16\00:45:31.99 is just get out there and do something 00:45:32.03\00:45:34.23 that God will honor that. 00:45:34.26\00:45:36.63 Do you believe and do you feel like you're walking in your God 00:45:36.67\00:45:40.94 given calling and purpose? 00:45:40.97\00:45:43.97 I do. 00:45:44.01\00:45:45.34 Yeah, I do believe that God has called me to do this. 00:45:45.37\00:45:48.94 I am 100% without a doubt. 00:45:48.98\00:45:52.65 And knowing that helps. 00:45:52.68\00:45:57.75 When we go through those hard times, 00:45:57.79\00:45:59.75 you know, when you're 100% sure 00:45:59.79\00:46:02.19 that God wants you to do something, 00:46:02.22\00:46:04.13 it doesn't matter what happens. 00:46:04.16\00:46:06.70 Everyone in the organization could leave, 00:46:06.73\00:46:08.86 you know, but if you feel 00:46:08.90\00:46:10.37 that this is what God called you to do, 00:46:10.40\00:46:11.93 then you're going to stay, you know, 00:46:11.97\00:46:14.37 and that's how I feel, you know? 00:46:14.40\00:46:15.74 Yes. 00:46:15.77\00:46:17.24 I believe this is what God called me to do 00:46:17.27\00:46:18.91 and I'm here to stay 00:46:18.94\00:46:20.28 and continue to move forward with it, you know? 00:46:20.31\00:46:22.31 And not only me, but our team, our leaders, 00:46:22.34\00:46:24.81 our board, our staff, the sacrifices they've made, 00:46:24.85\00:46:29.48 I can't even begin to describe the sacrifices 00:46:29.52\00:46:32.05 they've made to make this organization 00:46:32.09\00:46:34.66 what it is today. 00:46:34.69\00:46:36.02 Yes. 00:46:36.06\00:46:37.39 And it's just amazing to see 00:46:37.43\00:46:40.60 how God is using just everyone on the team 00:46:40.63\00:46:44.10 to make this come to life. 00:46:44.13\00:46:45.63 You know, if it was just me by myself, 00:46:45.67\00:46:48.54 this would have failed years and years ago, 00:46:48.57\00:46:50.94 you know, I wouldn't have gotten too far. 00:46:50.97\00:46:53.68 But there's so many people that love this work 00:46:53.71\00:46:55.94 and love the people that we serve that it's successful, 00:46:55.98\00:47:00.62 you know, so... Yes, praise God. 00:47:00.65\00:47:03.05 How old were you when you started SALT? 00:47:03.08\00:47:05.59 I was 22 going on 23. 00:47:05.62\00:47:09.09 You were 22 years old going on 23? 00:47:09.12\00:47:12.29 Mm-hmm. Wow. 00:47:12.33\00:47:14.03 Yeah, yeah. Yeah. 00:47:14.06\00:47:16.10 I was young. 00:47:16.13\00:47:18.20 And I do believe that, 00:47:18.23\00:47:21.84 you know, 00:47:21.87\00:47:25.07 I believe that there's so much energy 00:47:25.11\00:47:29.48 and passion that come from, 00:47:29.51\00:47:32.08 it come from everyone, but the young adults, 00:47:32.11\00:47:35.22 the young adults today, they want to change the world, 00:47:35.25\00:47:37.15 you know, they want to make a difference, 00:47:37.19\00:47:38.52 they want to see measurable impact. 00:47:38.55\00:47:40.66 And many young adults that leave the church 00:47:40.69\00:47:43.93 or decide to no longer be affiliated 00:47:43.96\00:47:46.46 with the church or God, 00:47:46.49\00:47:48.93 I believe 00:47:48.96\00:47:50.30 it's because 00:47:50.33\00:47:55.27 they don't see it happening, and they just, 00:47:55.30\00:47:57.91 they don't see it, 00:47:57.94\00:47:59.74 they believe maybe the church is hypocrites 00:47:59.77\00:48:01.38 or something like that. 00:48:01.41\00:48:02.74 But my advice would be to make a change within the church, 00:48:02.78\00:48:05.55 don't go with outside the church 00:48:05.58\00:48:07.08 and try to start something on your own, or say, 00:48:07.12\00:48:09.55 "Oh, the church doesn't have it so I'm going here." 00:48:09.58\00:48:12.42 What I felt, what motivated me in the beginning 00:48:12.45\00:48:14.82 was to be able to make a change in outside the church, 00:48:14.86\00:48:19.13 but supporting the church, 00:48:19.16\00:48:21.10 to help the church to become even better. 00:48:21.13\00:48:23.47 Yes. 00:48:23.50\00:48:24.83 We shouldn't run away from it, we should embrace it, 00:48:24.87\00:48:26.70 and we should help to build up 00:48:26.74\00:48:29.04 our brothers and sisters in our churches, so... 00:48:29.07\00:48:31.37 Amen. Amen. 00:48:31.41\00:48:33.14 What are some of the needs of your organization? 00:48:33.17\00:48:35.68 You've been focusing on everyone else's needs? 00:48:35.71\00:48:39.01 What does SALT need? 00:48:39.05\00:48:41.38 Right now SALT 00:48:41.42\00:48:45.19 is in need of definitely, 00:48:45.22\00:48:48.02 I mean, of course, like any other organization, is funds. 00:48:48.06\00:48:52.19 We are needing donations because the city is not, 00:48:52.23\00:48:55.03 and other corporate corporations 00:48:55.06\00:48:57.57 and all that they're not meeting all of our need. 00:48:57.60\00:48:59.93 And that's okay, you know, 00:48:59.97\00:49:02.30 but we are needing still donor support 00:49:02.34\00:49:05.77 to be able to expand to these other cities, 00:49:05.81\00:49:09.11 at least to have some kind of presence there 00:49:09.14\00:49:11.01 in the beginning, 00:49:11.05\00:49:12.38 then maybe we can get more support from the city, 00:49:12.41\00:49:14.45 but we need to have a presence there first. 00:49:14.48\00:49:16.79 So that's one and two, 00:49:16.82\00:49:18.22 we want to add mental health counseling, 00:49:18.25\00:49:20.82 it's a huge thing that's needed. 00:49:20.86\00:49:22.49 And we need more funding for our case management program. 00:49:22.52\00:49:26.19 And we'll be working on a business model 00:49:26.23\00:49:28.26 to create income for ourselves. 00:49:28.30\00:49:30.87 But until then, 00:49:30.90\00:49:32.90 donations is a huge part of what we do. 00:49:32.93\00:49:36.17 So that's definitely a huge need. 00:49:36.20\00:49:39.37 And if anyone even wants to volunteer, 00:49:39.41\00:49:42.68 I mean, hey, we can use that too, you know? 00:49:42.71\00:49:45.01 So in any area really, we can put them to work, so... 00:49:45.05\00:49:49.45 Yeah, that's what I was going to ask you like what area? 00:49:49.48\00:49:51.75 What would them volunteering, what would that look like? 00:49:51.79\00:49:54.82 Yeah, yeah, it's going to vary for each person. 00:49:54.86\00:49:57.56 We're really going to sit down with them, 00:49:57.59\00:49:59.56 figure out what their skills are 00:49:59.59\00:50:01.10 and how they feel like they can they can contribute. 00:50:01.13\00:50:04.07 And that kind of match them in an area that can help them 00:50:04.10\00:50:06.70 the organization the most. 00:50:06.74\00:50:08.07 But definitely volunteer work is needed too. 00:50:08.10\00:50:12.47 Now, do you have a resume building area 00:50:12.51\00:50:15.28 as well with SALT? 00:50:15.31\00:50:16.64 We do.
