Well, Young Disciples started
when I was still a teenager.

And we were at a church
plant in Southern California

and the young people there
at the Sabbath School class,

we had a very energetic
00:06:16.10\00:06:17.61
and somewhat serious
group of young people

who got their new
quarterlies one week.

And this is kind of the spark

that started the Young Disciple.

And they were looking through it

and they were like,

was on Joseph and Moses,

Some of the kids just
graduated from lower division,

And some of them were like,

in kindergarten too."

And somebody asked,

that's an amazing question

And the answer was,
"Well, yes, of course there is."

like, "Would you like

to learn how to study the Bible,

how to find some of
these exciting other truths?

And they were like, "Yes."

And so my mom at the time
was a Sabbath School teacher,

and she started
putting together something

on our little
computer, printing it out,

photocopying it,

that was sort of
the very beginning

of Young Disciple.

And God was being nice to us.

Because if He'd said,

"This is what
you're going to do,

here's the whole plan,

you're going to have a
full color publication,

whole Sabbath School program

with teachers materials,

and you're going to do camps,

and you're going
to take kids overseas

and give them
foreign missions experience,"

we'd have been like, "Oh, no,
you got the wrong people, God."

Right.

But that was God's plan for us.

And over time, He led and said,

"Look, I'd like you to do
this in a more serious way."

He put the idea into our hearts

as people visited
from other churches,

and we're like, "Well,
can you send that to us too?"

this could get out
of hand pretty quickly."

But God said, "No, I actually
do want you to do that."

helping kids connect with Christ

So yeah, no, it's, you know,
ministering to our young people

is so important.

And it seems like
it can be a challenge

with the times progressing,

because, you know, we
live in different times

than we did 10 years ago,
15 years ago, 20 years ago.

And so the fact
that you guys exist

for the purpose of
bringing young people
00:08:43.08\00:08:44.85
to Christ is amazing.

And I'm sure that
the Lord has taught you

many different tactics
and methods over the years

on how to reach out
to these young people

in such a powerful way.

But I have to
just ask this question,

because, you know, our
world hasn't been the same

in the past couple of
years with the pandemic.

COVID-19 has changed everything.

I know, it has
directly affected,

you know,
ministries near and far,

good or bad in many cases.

So how in the world
did you guys manage to,

you know, continue
through your mission
00:09:11.08\00:09:13.18
to stay relevant and
reach as many of these people
00:09:13.21\00:09:15.92
as possible
through the pandemic?

That was an
interesting challenge for us

'cause the Young
Disciple is a physical thing.

It's a magazine, you
know, we've got teacher's helps,
00:09:23.09\00:09:25.66
there's the
Sabbath School programs.
00:09:25.69\00:09:27.50
There's quarterlies.
00:09:27.53\00:09:28.86
And what we found
during the pandemic was,

Sabbath Schools
were closing down.

They were like, the
teachers were saying,

"I don't think we
need these materials
00:09:35.24\00:09:36.57
because we, you know,
we're not getting together."

And we realized that,
well, first of all young people
00:09:39.97\00:09:44.45
still need Jesus
during the pandemic,

maybe even more.

And so that really opened up,
you know, our eyes to realize,

okay, we've got to adapt,
we've got to figure out ways

to continue to
reach young people,

and so we did a
couple of things.

We took the printed
Young Disciple magazines,

we made them
available on our website

so that young people
who were in churches,

who were not meeting,

who could not get
their magazines could still

and in the Young
Disciple magazine,

every magazine
has the Bible studies

for that every
day for that week.

So they were
able to download that,

they were still able to
keep up with their lessons,

still continue doing things.

And then we started
online Sabbath School.

in their churches.

that were just lonely.

There, everything in their lives

God opened the doors for us
to provide a constant for them,

like they could
still have Sabbath School,

have that connection,

that spiritual
something in their lives.

And so we taught for, I
think, like three months,

we got up and tried
to figure out the timing.

So that worked for
East Coast and West Coast,

which made it a
bit early for us.

But it was an amazing blessing

to be able to
connect with young people

and even some of those
young people then later,

to be an understanding there,

movement has almost ceased

for a lot of people.
