It's mutualized, are you? 00:05:54.75\00:05:57.12 You know, you... 00:05:57.15\00:05:59.75 First of all, you have had 00:05:59.79\00:06:01.29 a very interesting personal journey. 00:06:01.32\00:06:03.83 And when I read your book, 00:06:03.86\00:06:06.13 and we're going to talk more about your book, 00:06:06.16\00:06:07.96 but when I read your book, 00:06:08.00\00:06:09.96 I realized that medicine 00:06:10.00\00:06:12.60 is not just a profession for you. 00:06:12.63\00:06:15.17 Medicine is your calling. 00:06:15.20\00:06:17.61 And you have a personal connection 00:06:17.64\00:06:20.51 with what you're doing. 00:06:20.54\00:06:22.04 Tell us a little bit about your journey? 00:06:22.08\00:06:24.58 Well, I can tell you that my mom told me 00:06:24.61\00:06:28.05 when I was a little girl, 00:06:28.08\00:06:29.82 that I saw a little boy 00:06:29.85\00:06:33.29 who we used the term crippled at the time, 00:06:33.32\00:06:35.62 but we would call disabled now 00:06:35.66\00:06:38.33 who was walking 00:06:38.36\00:06:39.69 across the street downtown and out 00:06:39.73\00:06:41.06 and he was holding his mom's hand 00:06:41.10\00:06:42.43 and I was holding my mom's hand and I told her, 00:06:42.46\00:06:45.17 I said, "Mom, when I grow up, 00:06:45.20\00:06:46.53 I want to help people just like that." 00:06:46.57\00:06:48.64 And I didn't remember that until I went to medical school. 00:06:48.67\00:06:53.31 And my mother told me, 00:06:53.34\00:06:54.68 that's what you said you were going to do. 00:06:54.71\00:06:56.38 And, you know, it's just amazing to me 00:06:56.41\00:06:58.51 how God remembers your dreams longer than you do. 00:06:58.55\00:07:01.95 Yeah. 00:07:01.98\00:07:03.32 And so I was able to realize that dream 00:07:03.35\00:07:05.69 and become a physician, 00:07:05.72\00:07:07.06 because I just love helping people. 00:07:07.09\00:07:09.32 And it shows, it really shows 00:07:09.36\00:07:11.53 in the way you deal with people 00:07:11.56\00:07:13.19 and the way you interact with them. 00:07:13.23\00:07:16.10 What made you decide 00:07:16.13\00:07:18.97 to write this book about diabetes? 00:07:19.00\00:07:22.94 Because we need to talk about diabetes. 00:07:22.97\00:07:24.81 But what made you decide to write this particular book? 00:07:24.84\00:07:28.94 Well, I'm gonna say this without crying. 00:07:28.98\00:07:35.15 But my mom developed type 2 diabetes, 00:07:35.18\00:07:38.95 probably when I was in elementary 00:07:38.99\00:07:41.92 or grade school. 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.63 And I remember Dr. Kerry, 00:07:43.66\00:07:48.13 who was her doctor told her that she has a little sugar. 00:07:48.16\00:07:52.53 And at the time, nobody really knew 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.50 what diabetes could do. 00:07:55.54\00:07:58.61 They just said she had a little, a little sugar. 00:07:58.64\00:08:00.58 So in her mind, I don't think that 00:08:00.61\00:08:02.48 it registered to her what that actually means. 00:08:02.51\00:08:05.38 Yes. 00:08:05.41\00:08:06.75 And it didn't resonate with the rest of my family. 00:08:06.78\00:08:09.18 I'm one of eight children, and my mom and dad. 00:08:09.22\00:08:12.79 And I just remember being a little girl 00:08:12.82\00:08:14.92 and she reaching for something 00:08:14.96\00:08:16.83 that I felt she shouldn't eat. 00:08:16.86\00:08:19.26 But everybody else said, oh, it's just a little, 00:08:19.29\00:08:22.03 or it's just a little and, 00:08:22.06\00:08:25.30 you know, I'm like next to the baby. 00:08:25.33\00:08:27.60 So nobody listens to the baby, you know, 00:08:27.64\00:08:30.34 when you're talking about that. 00:08:30.37\00:08:31.71 It's just something that she wanted to eat. 00:08:31.74\00:08:33.07 But somehow in my childhood mind, 00:08:33.11\00:08:36.51 I recognized that 00:08:36.54\00:08:37.88 this was something she should avoid. 00:08:37.91\00:08:40.52 And it wasn't until much later 00:08:40.55\00:08:43.02 that I was able to say the reasons 00:08:43.05\00:08:45.35 why she should avoid it. 00:08:45.39\00:08:46.96 But unfortunately, it came a little late, 00:08:46.99\00:08:50.06 because my mom as diabetes does, 00:08:50.09\00:08:54.80 being a progressive 00:08:54.83\00:08:56.16 and chronic disease, it progressed. 00:08:56.20\00:08:58.10 And it caused a lot of different problems in her, 00:08:58.13\00:09:01.74 she developed high blood pressure. 00:09:01.77\00:09:03.61 She had high cholesterol, 00:09:03.64\00:09:06.11 she developed congestive heart failure. 00:09:06.14\00:09:08.51 She started having 00:09:08.54\00:09:09.88 some compromises in her kidneys. 00:09:09.91\00:09:12.25 I mean, all of those things were happening 00:09:12.28\00:09:14.68 while I was in college, 00:09:14.72\00:09:17.29 learning about just basics biology. 00:09:17.32\00:09:20.92 And then, then I went to medical school 00:09:20.96\00:09:23.96 and in medical school, 00:09:23.99\00:09:25.69 while I'm learning about the heart, 00:09:25.73\00:09:28.56 she was having heart conditions and boy was that 00:09:28.60\00:09:32.27 like the toughest time for me. 00:09:32.30\00:09:34.04 I remember my attending professor, 00:09:34.07\00:09:39.34 I went to him, he was a cardiologist, 00:09:39.37\00:09:41.08 and I told him, I said, 00:09:41.11\00:09:42.64 "My mom has high blood pressure. 00:09:42.68\00:09:44.95 She has high cholesterol. 00:09:44.98\00:09:46.31 She has congestive heart failure. 00:09:46.35\00:09:47.98 And I'm just wondering, what is that? 00:09:48.02\00:09:50.59 Is there something that we can do?" 00:09:50.62\00:09:52.49 And he said, not trying to, 00:09:52.52\00:09:56.73 it wasn't in a way that 00:09:56.76\00:09:58.09 he was trying to hurt me or anything like that. 00:09:58.13\00:10:00.33 But he was very honest 00:10:00.36\00:10:01.70 and very straightforward with me. 00:10:01.73\00:10:03.10 And he said, "Your mother is going to die." 00:10:03.13\00:10:06.10 And man, whoa... 00:10:06.13\00:10:09.47 That really got me. 00:10:09.50\00:10:12.97 Yes. 00:10:13.01\00:10:14.34 And it's very interesting that just a little bit after that. 00:10:14.38\00:10:20.18 I got a call that said, 00:10:20.22\00:10:23.69 my mom had coded 00:10:23.72\00:10:26.82 and I will never forget it 00:10:26.86\00:10:30.69 because I was in California. 00:10:30.73\00:10:33.36 And my mom was in Indiana 00:10:33.40\00:10:35.36 and because she was a worrywart. 00:10:35.40\00:10:38.20 She didn't, you know, I didn't want her to know that 00:10:38.23\00:10:39.70 I was traveling to California. 00:10:39.73\00:10:42.34 And I just wanted to go there and come back 00:10:42.37\00:10:44.67 before she knew anything. 00:10:44.71\00:10:46.27 And while I was there, 00:10:46.31\00:10:48.61 I actually had a layover in Illinois, 00:10:48.64\00:10:51.18 and I didn't call her and that's probably the thing 00:10:51.21\00:10:53.95 that that haunts me the most, 00:10:53.98\00:10:56.08 is that I didn't call her from Chicago. 00:10:56.12\00:10:58.35 I just didn't want her to know I was there. 00:10:58.39\00:10:59.72 Yeah. 00:10:59.75\00:11:01.09 And then went to California, 00:11:01.12\00:11:02.46 hung out with my girlfriend Lillian, 00:11:02.49\00:11:03.83 we were at her mom's house, and we were just, 00:11:03.86\00:11:06.09 we just had a good time gone to the beach. 00:11:06.13\00:11:08.16 And, you know, people watching then we came back to her house. 00:11:08.20\00:11:11.77 And then my friend and my sister gave me a call 00:11:11.80\00:11:15.67 at her house and I answered the phone. 00:11:15.70\00:11:18.17 And what I remember was looking at the phone in disbelief, 00:11:18.21\00:11:21.94 dropping the phone 00:11:21.98\00:11:23.51 and screaming to the top of my lungs. 00:11:23.55\00:11:25.95 And her mom and Lillian rushed to me, 00:11:25.98\00:11:28.55 because they knew with that kind of screech, 00:11:28.58\00:11:31.15 there had to be something wrong. 00:11:31.19\00:11:33.02 And I just remember saying, God, 00:11:33.05\00:11:37.79 why my mother, you know, and... 00:11:37.83\00:11:42.33 So. Yeah. 00:11:42.36\00:11:44.03 So Lillian made all the arrangements for me 00:11:44.07\00:11:47.57 to go home. 00:11:47.60\00:11:49.64 And I got on a flight. 00:11:49.67\00:11:51.07 She didn't even remember all of that. 00:11:51.11\00:11:53.51 And I told her later, 00:11:53.54\00:11:54.94 how important that was to me 00:11:54.98\00:11:56.44 that she made all the reservations. 00:11:56.48\00:11:58.58 She got me back home. 00:11:58.61\00:12:00.72 And all I could think about what was going on, 00:12:00.75\00:12:03.52 what was going on. 00:12:03.55\00:12:04.89 And it was the most difficult thing. 00:12:04.92\00:12:08.09 That was the hardest thing for me to deal with. 00:12:08.12\00:12:10.79 With that call your mother had passed, 00:12:10.83\00:12:13.60 or she was dying with that call? 00:12:13.63\00:12:15.56 Well, on that call, she had died. 00:12:15.60\00:12:21.87 We had gotten a call in November. 00:12:21.90\00:12:26.07 That was in July. 00:12:26.11\00:12:28.51 But the November before that, 00:12:28.54\00:12:31.68 she had, we had gotten a call that she had coded. 00:12:31.71\00:12:36.79 And she made it through, it was very interesting. 00:12:36.82\00:12:39.45 Because she, it gave us an opportunity 00:12:39.49\00:12:42.42 to go home and see her, there were three of us in DC. 00:12:42.46\00:12:46.39 My sister Lacadia, my sister Anita, 00:12:46.43\00:12:48.86 and then I was there. 00:12:48.90\00:12:50.47 And we hopped in the car. 00:12:50.50\00:12:51.83 And I remember there was a blizzard, you know, 00:12:51.87\00:12:53.20 Chicago's always got some, some bad weather in November. 00:12:53.23\00:12:57.37 So you got to worry about that. 00:12:57.41\00:12:59.11 And so she... 00:12:59.14\00:13:01.51 We got in a car, and we traveled back 00:13:01.54\00:13:03.28 and it was so quiet in the car. 00:13:03.31\00:13:05.11 Because I think all of us 00:13:05.15\00:13:06.48 were thinking kind of the same thing. 00:13:06.51\00:13:07.85 And we were praying and just kind of hoping 00:13:07.88\00:13:09.58 and we got to the hospital and it's so interesting. 00:13:09.62\00:13:13.82 My mother told us that she had had a dream that 00:13:13.86\00:13:17.46 that she that we had come and when she saw us, 00:13:17.49\00:13:22.73 we came in the same order as her dream, 00:13:22.76\00:13:25.80 which was very interesting. 00:13:25.83\00:13:27.57 And she told us, 00:13:27.60\00:13:29.57 and this is a very interesting story. 00:13:29.60\00:13:32.37 My mom was an amazing Christian woman, 00:13:32.41\00:13:35.64 amazing Christian woman, 00:13:35.68\00:13:37.01 like I want my life to be like hers. 00:13:37.05\00:13:39.28 Yes. And she had said that. 00:13:39.31\00:13:44.75 She felt like God was talking to her. 00:13:44.79\00:13:50.99 And she remembered saying to Him, 00:13:51.03\00:13:54.26 I want to see your face. 00:13:54.30\00:13:56.56 And He said no Annie, you can't see my face 00:13:56.60\00:13:59.30 because nobody has ever seen me 00:13:59.33\00:14:02.20 and lived and your children are not ready. 00:14:02.24\00:14:05.57 And when she woke up from her unconsciousness, 00:14:05.61\00:14:09.94 she told us that dream 00:14:09.98\00:14:12.05 and that we had walked in the room 00:14:12.08\00:14:13.75 in the same order that she had dreamt. 00:14:13.78\00:14:16.79 And I was just so happy that she had made it through. 00:14:16.82\00:14:20.56 And, you know, I was studying. 00:14:20.59\00:14:22.46 So I had my books in her room with her 00:14:22.49\00:14:24.89 because I didn't want to leave her side. 00:14:24.93\00:14:26.59 And I just, I was just studying because I'm in medical school. 00:14:26.63\00:14:28.66 Yeah. 00:14:28.70\00:14:30.03 And I'm studying and I'm watching her 00:14:30.07\00:14:31.80 and she didn't want to go to sleep 00:14:31.83\00:14:33.17 because she was afraid to go to sleep. 00:14:33.20\00:14:34.90 And then I'm like, mom, but you really need some rest. 00:14:34.94\00:14:36.81 Please go to sleep 00:14:36.84\00:14:38.17 and she didn't want to go to sleep. 00:14:38.21\00:14:39.54 It was just, 00:14:39.57\00:14:40.91 it was just a really difficult time. 00:14:40.94\00:14:42.81 But I'm so grateful 00:14:42.84\00:14:44.78 because God does give you what you need. 00:14:44.81\00:14:47.78 And He did give us more time. 00:14:47.82\00:14:50.99 And that more time really made a big difference. 00:14:51.02\00:14:53.92 I mean, like I remember being in there, 00:14:53.96\00:14:56.76 we back home one more time for the holidays. 00:14:56.79\00:15:00.16 And I remember being there with her and taking pictures. 00:15:00.20\00:15:03.87 And I remember the outfit she had on, 00:15:03.90\00:15:06.53 I remember the smell of her hands. 00:15:06.57\00:15:08.94 I remember just her sitting on the sofa telling us, 00:15:08.97\00:15:12.74 she loves me or telling us that 00:15:12.77\00:15:14.98 she loves us and me, you know, 00:15:15.01\00:15:16.68 all of us expressing I mean, it was just, a just. 00:15:16.71\00:15:20.75 It was just a time that that was difficult. 00:15:20.78\00:15:27.19 It was difficult. 00:15:27.22\00:15:28.56 And, I remember getting in the car 00:15:28.59\00:15:30.79 and going back to DC. 00:15:30.83\00:15:32.59 And thinking in my mind, 00:15:32.63\00:15:34.63 this is probably the last time I'll see you. 00:15:34.66\00:15:38.23 And it was. 00:15:38.27\00:15:42.10 That song is... 00:15:42.14\00:15:43.94 Oh, you all know how I cry, right? 00:15:43.97\00:15:47.38 I didn't mean that, I was explaining. 00:15:47.41\00:15:48.74 No, no, no, no. 00:15:48.78\00:15:50.11 But honestly, that's so beautiful 00:15:50.15\00:15:52.45 because again, it shows several things. 00:15:52.48\00:15:56.18 Number one, it shows the legacy that your mother left you. 00:15:56.22\00:16:00.72 Number two. 00:16:00.76\00:16:02.16 Let's start again. 00:16:02.19\00:16:03.53 Number one, it shows how merciful God is. 00:16:03.56\00:16:05.86 Yes. 00:16:05.89\00:16:07.23 By allowing her to have more time with you. 00:16:07.26\00:16:09.90 Yes. Because sometimes we need... 00:16:09.93\00:16:14.67 In my own case with my mother, I needed more time too 00:16:14.70\00:16:18.27 and the Lord gave us a bit more time and so, 00:16:18.31\00:16:22.34 that's such a blessing. 00:16:22.38\00:16:23.71 Some people don't have more time. 00:16:23.75\00:16:26.41 But in this case, the Lord gave me more time. 00:16:26.45\00:16:29.05 And that's a blessing. 00:16:29.08\00:16:30.42 Number two, the legacy that your mother left. 00:16:30.45\00:16:34.09 And number three, 00:16:34.12\00:16:35.46 the calling on you with medicine 00:16:35.49\00:16:40.80 and now it's personal. 00:16:40.83\00:16:43.60 Now, it's something that, 00:16:43.63\00:16:45.60 you know, you have this passion for, 00:16:45.63\00:16:49.07 because you want to help other people. 00:16:49.10\00:16:51.84 And because you've gone through 00:16:51.87\00:16:54.34 this kind of situation yourself, 00:16:54.38\00:16:56.44 and so, yeah, and I appreciate your transparency, 00:16:56.48\00:17:00.98 because it's important to know, it's important to know. 00:17:01.02\00:17:05.39 So let's talk about diabetes, and what it is, 00:17:05.42\00:17:09.76 like what exactly is type 2 diabetes? 00:17:09.79\00:17:14.23 Well, type 2 diabetes is a what 00:17:14.26\00:17:17.37 American Diabetes Association calls a chronic 00:17:17.40\00:17:20.94 and progressive disease, degenerative disease, 00:17:20.97\00:17:24.44 that is really a problem 00:17:24.47\00:17:26.98 with the way sugar is metabolized, 00:17:27.01\00:17:29.38 or sugar is broken down in your body. 00:17:29.41\00:17:31.75 With type 2 diabetes, 00:17:31.78\00:17:33.78 which 90% of people who have diabetes 00:17:33.82\00:17:36.18 are typically going to have type 2 diabetes. 00:17:36.22\00:17:38.69 It tends to cause something 00:17:38.72\00:17:43.46 called insulin resistance. 00:17:43.49\00:17:46.26 And if I could get a little technical, 00:17:46.29\00:17:48.10 not too much, 00:17:54.24\00:17:58.27 and it will be presented 00:17:58.31\00:18:00.88 to the cells of your body by insulin. 00:18:00.91\00:18:03.98 So your pancreas has something called beta cells, 00:18:04.01\00:18:06.65 and those beta cells are going to secrete insulin. 00:18:06.68\00:18:09.08 And they're gonna be like an escort for glucose. 00:18:09.12\00:18:12.92 So that when your food, 00:18:12.95\00:18:14.29 if I eat a candy bar, it's broken down. 00:18:14.32\00:18:17.09 And so all those molecules of sugar 00:18:17.13\00:18:19.36 will be broken down. 00:18:19.39\00:18:20.73 And insulin is going to be secreted from the pancreas 00:18:20.76\00:18:23.23 to kind of help that sugar go inside of the cell, 00:18:23.26\00:18:25.90 which is the desired source of energy for your body. 00:18:25.93\00:18:31.44 Okay, your body wants to have the glucose. 00:18:31.47\00:18:33.91 And so in order for it to get inside the cell, 00:18:33.94\00:18:35.91 insulin has to escort it in through 00:18:35.94\00:18:37.65 a couple of different processes 00:18:37.68\00:18:39.18 on the cell membrane, 00:18:39.21\00:18:40.55 and all of those kinds of things. 00:18:40.58\00:18:41.92 But the idea is that 00:18:41.95\00:18:43.59 if it doesn't get inside the cell, 00:18:43.62\00:18:45.85 then there's going to be excess sugar 00:18:45.89\00:18:47.52 that's just swimming around in the bloodstream. 00:18:47.56\00:18:50.86 And you've probably heard that term 00:18:50.89\00:18:52.33 called hemoglobin A1C, 00:18:52.36\00:18:53.90 or that laboratory test called hemoglobin A1C. 00:18:53.93\00:18:56.77 Well, that is called glycosylated hemoglobin. 00:18:56.80\00:19:00.30 And so what that means is that 00:19:00.34\00:19:01.87 the red blood cells in your body 00:19:01.90\00:19:03.54 will have glucose tag to it. 00:19:03.57\00:19:06.88 And your body can only handle a certain amount of that. 00:19:06.91\00:19:10.05 When it gets to be too much, it becomes inflammatory. 00:19:10.08\00:19:13.18 And it's like something 00:19:13.21\00:19:17.15 scraping against the walls 00:19:17.19\00:19:19.65 of your blood vessels. 00:19:19.69\00:19:21.36 So I always like to talk about it. 00:19:21.39\00:19:23.12 Like if you were in a tunnel, 00:19:23.16\00:19:25.79 and you for some reason decided to ride 00:19:25.83\00:19:28.83 on the top of the car in the tunnel 00:19:28.86\00:19:30.63 and it's a narrow tunnel, 00:19:30.67\00:19:32.43 you would be on top of the car scraping up 00:19:32.47\00:19:35.54 against the tunnel top because of your position there. 00:19:35.57\00:19:39.64 That's what the glycosylated hemoglobin 00:19:39.67\00:19:41.41 does to your blood vessels. 00:19:41.44\00:19:43.01 And so it's scraping the insides 00:19:43.04\00:19:44.98 of one myth 00:20:16.51\00:20:18.41 that people have about type 2 diabetes is that 00:20:18.45\00:20:22.68 it's all about the sugar. 00:20:22.72\00:20:24.82 It's really not all about the sugar. 00:20:24.85\00:20:27.42 And that's the interesting thing. 00:20:27.46\00:20:28.82 The studies now shown that, that the issue is that 00:20:28.86\00:20:32.46 there's something called intramyocellular lipids, 00:20:32.49\00:20:36.23 which is really a nice, long, you know, as doctors, 00:20:36.26\00:20:39.27 we like to have terms, 00:20:39.30\00:20:40.64 so you can like respect that doctors, right? 00:20:40.67\00:20:43.24 So we use this term called intramyocellular lipids. 00:20:43.27\00:20:46.14 And what that means is that 00:20:46.17\00:20:47.51 there's so much fat inside the cell it's like a glue. It's like a glue. 00:20:55.52\00:20:57.95 I love that you said that, because it is like a glue 00:20:57.99\00:21:00.66 that kind of closes the lock, 00:21:00.69\00:21:04.33 so that you can't get that glucose inside. 00:21:04.36\00:21:06.66 And in my book, I talk about 00:21:06.70\00:21:08.40 how it's like going to your party, 00:21:08.43\00:21:11.93 you're the guest of honor, 00:21:11.97\00:21:13.30 I'm glucose, I'm the guest of honor. 00:21:13.34\00:21:15.40 And I'm trying to get into this cell 00:21:15.44\00:21:17.14 that where my party is happening. 00:21:17.17\00:21:18.51 Right. 00:21:18.54\00:21:19.87 But there's so many, 00:21:19.91\00:21:21.24 so much fat, so many fat cells 00:21:21.28\00:21:22.61 inside that cell that I can't get into it. 00:21:22.64\00:21:27.08 So I'm trying to get insulin, 00:21:27.12\00:21:28.75 I'm like, hey, but can you help me 00:21:28.78\00:21:30.25 get inside this cell? 00:21:30.29\00:21:31.72 And so he comes, he's like the bouncer, right? 00:21:31.75\00:21:33.25 He's the bouncer, 00:21:33.29\00:21:34.62 he's coming and he's trying to get that 00:21:34.66\00:21:35.99 glucose inside the cell. 00:21:36.02\00:21:37.36 But then what happens? 00:21:37.39\00:21:38.73 He's like, wait a minute, 00:21:38.76\00:21:40.10 something's wrong with this lock, I can't get in. 00:21:40.13\00:21:41.46 So he calls his buddies and says, 00:21:41.50\00:21:42.86 hey, can you get bring some more guys, 00:21:42.90\00:21:44.67 I need you guys. 00:21:44.70\00:21:46.03 Because if we get more of us, we'll be able to get it inside. 00:21:46.07\00:21:48.87 So he gets a lot of his insulin buddies 00:21:48.90\00:21:50.81 to come in to try to get that glucose inside the cell. 00:21:50.84\00:21:53.61 And though he probably gets a little bit in, 00:21:53.64\00:21:55.61 he can't get much in 00:21:55.64\00:21:56.98 because it's like standing room only 00:21:57.01\00:21:58.35 where it's all of these fat cells inside, holding, 00:21:58.38\00:22:01.88 hogging up all of the rooms 00:22:01.92\00:22:03.45 so that he can't get inside. 00:22:03.49\00:22:04.82 Oh, that's a good analogy.
