Praise the Lord. 00:04:04.74\00:04:06.54 That's amazing. 00:04:06.57\00:04:07.91 So I'm gonna come back to you in just a moment. 00:04:07.94\00:04:09.48 We're gonna talk a little bit more about the missions 00:04:09.51\00:04:11.48 and all that Sunnydale is involved in, 00:04:11.51\00:04:13.18 but I also want to introduce our other two guests here. 00:04:13.21\00:04:16.12 We have Mr. Brian Flores right here. 00:04:16.15\00:04:18.89 You're a 12th grade student, right? 00:04:18.92\00:04:20.26 Yes. All right. 00:04:20.29\00:04:21.62 Both of you are seniors, I guess. 00:04:21.66\00:04:22.99 I guess all of our students on here today are seniors. 00:04:23.02\00:04:24.36 You brought a good representation today. 00:04:24.39\00:04:25.73 Praise the Lord. 00:04:25.76\00:04:27.10 And then also we have Miss Hayley Erickson. 00:04:27.13\00:04:28.76 How are you guys doing? We're doing amazing. 00:04:28.80\00:04:30.73 I'm so glad to be here 00:04:30.77\00:04:32.10 since it's our first time on 3ABN. 00:04:32.13\00:04:33.54 I know, first time. 00:04:33.57\00:04:34.90 I've always seen it growing up as a child. 00:04:34.94\00:04:36.27 And so it's pretty cool to be here. 00:04:36.30\00:04:37.77 Amen. Praise the Lord. 00:04:37.81\00:04:39.67 That's really good to hear 00:04:39.71\00:04:41.04 because a lot of times I ask kids, 00:04:41.08\00:04:42.41 you know, have you heard of 3ABN? 00:04:42.44\00:04:43.78 And some of them haven't, I guess 00:04:43.81\00:04:45.15 just because they're so young and haven't heard of it, 00:04:45.18\00:04:46.85 but it's a blessing to know that you guys have. 00:04:46.88\00:04:48.95 And we're gonna be talking to you guys also 00:04:48.98\00:04:50.92 here in a little while about your missions 00:04:50.95\00:04:53.25 and all that you are involved in 00:04:53.29\00:04:55.29 with Sunnydale missions. 00:04:55.32\00:04:56.93 And so, yeah, it's a blessing to have you guys as well. 00:04:56.96\00:04:59.59 So Brother Gary, I'm gonna come back to you at this time. 00:04:59.63\00:05:02.10 Let's get a little deeper into talking about, 00:05:02.13\00:05:04.83 you know, Sunnydale in general, its missions and you know, 00:05:04.87\00:05:07.57 its programs and all that you have 00:05:07.60\00:05:09.44 to offer there at Sunnydale and what you're involved in. 00:05:09.47\00:05:11.74 Well, as I mentioned, 00:05:11.77\00:05:13.11 we started 2005 with 86 students 00:05:13.14\00:05:15.61 at the academy 00:05:15.64\00:05:16.98 and it was a low point. 00:05:17.01\00:05:18.41 But through the blessing, 00:05:18.45\00:05:19.78 through the opening of the doors, 00:05:19.81\00:05:21.38 Katrina hit shortly after that. 00:05:21.42\00:05:23.25 Oh, that's right. 00:05:23.28\00:05:24.62 And we looked at ourselves and said, 00:05:24.65\00:05:26.42 "What can we do? How can we get the kids down there to help?" 00:05:26.45\00:05:30.09 So over the next three years, we took a total of five trips. 00:05:30.13\00:05:33.36 We identified where we could go help rebuild. 00:05:33.40\00:05:35.40 We found Waveland, 00:05:35.43\00:05:36.93 which was an area that was out of the way. 00:05:36.97\00:05:39.20 Wasn't getting a lot of help. 00:05:39.23\00:05:40.97 We rebuild homes, we cleared property 00:05:41.00\00:05:43.54 and just the blessing of the kids going down, 00:05:43.57\00:05:46.54 our laypeople from our conference 00:05:46.57\00:05:48.28 would volunteer to go with the kids. 00:05:48.31\00:05:50.81 It was just a true blessing 00:05:50.85\00:05:52.48 and we felt that blessing inside 00:05:52.51\00:05:55.48 and we felt the calling that, 00:05:55.52\00:05:57.09 "Hey, we need to keep our kids going and active." 00:05:57.12\00:05:59.02 Absolutely. 00:05:59.05\00:06:00.39 So the development of the India trips all started 00:06:00.42\00:06:02.32 shortly after the India trips. 00:06:02.36\00:06:04.49 We started going to the continent of Africa 00:06:04.53\00:06:07.76 and to different countries and building schools. 00:06:07.80\00:06:10.97 Some may have heard of the one-day school buildings. 00:06:11.00\00:06:13.70 That's right. Yeah. 00:06:13.74\00:06:15.07 Over seven years, we put up seven schools 00:06:15.10\00:06:17.11 over in countries of Uganda and Zambia 00:06:17.14\00:06:20.31 and Tanzania and Zimbabwe. 00:06:20.34\00:06:22.28 Wow. 00:06:22.31\00:06:23.71 A little later Brian's going to talk about Tanzania 00:06:23.75\00:06:25.85 and our more recent trip, 00:06:25.88\00:06:27.75 which was more focused on, on evangelism, 00:06:27.78\00:06:30.32 but I'd like to give 00:06:30.35\00:06:31.69 a just a little bit of a prehistory to that. 00:06:31.72\00:06:34.09 Yeah. 00:06:34.12\00:06:35.46 In 2019, when we went to Tanzania, 00:06:35.49\00:06:37.96 we were focused on helping the mission station, 00:06:37.99\00:06:40.63 Kibidula, 00:06:40.66\00:06:42.00 and we were gonna do a little work for them 00:06:42.03\00:06:44.40 and also do some evangelism 00:06:44.43\00:06:46.23 with their primary school students. 00:06:46.27\00:06:48.50 And we were asked before we came, 00:06:48.54\00:06:50.31 would you go to another school and teach Bible for two days? 00:06:50.34\00:06:54.44 And I'm reading my email, like, 00:06:54.48\00:06:55.81 what does that mean to teach Bible for two days 00:06:55.84\00:06:57.95 at a school that I know nothing about. 00:06:57.98\00:06:59.75 And they said, 00:06:59.78\00:07:01.12 "Just present the same programming 00:07:01.15\00:07:02.48 that you're doing for the primary school there." 00:07:02.52\00:07:05.79 So as we got there, we found out that 00:07:05.82\00:07:07.16 this was the school run by a Swedish couple 00:07:07.19\00:07:09.82 called Liberty School. 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.19 Okay. 00:07:11.23\00:07:12.56 They were there just for education, 00:07:12.59\00:07:14.26 but recently they had become connected with Kirby doula. 00:07:14.30\00:07:17.53 And the wife had actually started attending church 00:07:17.57\00:07:20.34 with the Kibidula Church. 00:07:20.37\00:07:22.50 So we took our kids 00:07:22.54\00:07:23.87 and we went over there for two days. 00:07:23.91\00:07:25.24 On the second day, 00:07:25.27\00:07:26.61 our kids were presenting 00:07:26.64\00:07:28.48 VBS type programming with all of their kids. 00:07:28.51\00:07:30.61 Wow. 00:07:30.65\00:07:31.98 The headmaster was there 00:07:32.01\00:07:33.58 and he came to our leaders and said, 00:07:33.62\00:07:35.42 "Next year, will you guys please come back 00:07:35.45\00:07:37.49 and do a full week with us?" 00:07:37.52\00:07:39.82 Wow. 00:07:39.85\00:07:41.19 And we thought, "Man, what are we gonna do?" 00:07:41.22\00:07:43.26 So we came home, we prayed about it. 00:07:43.29\00:07:44.76 We actually had another school building 00:07:44.79\00:07:46.13 that was ready to go. 00:07:46.16\00:07:47.50 So we didn't plan to go back to Tanzania. 00:07:47.53\00:07:49.53 And in November, our trips are in February. 00:07:49.56\00:07:52.53 So by November, we're buying airline tickets, 00:07:52.57\00:07:55.10 our school project, 00:07:55.14\00:07:56.81 all of a sudden we got noticed wasn't going to happen. 00:07:56.84\00:07:58.81 Hmm, okay. 00:07:58.84\00:08:00.18 So I felt very impressed by the Lord, 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.78 get in contact with Kibidula. 00:08:02.81\00:08:04.15 Right. 00:08:04.18\00:08:05.51 See if it's okay to bring kids back again. 00:08:05.55\00:08:06.95 And they welcomed us with open arms. 00:08:06.98\00:08:09.25 They contacted the Liberty School people 00:08:09.28\00:08:11.39 and they said, yes, please come. 00:08:11.42\00:08:12.75 And please be there for all week. 00:08:12.79\00:08:14.12 So we went back in 2020. 00:08:14.16\00:08:15.89 Brian was part of that trip. 00:08:15.92\00:08:17.26 He'll talk about that a little bit. 00:08:17.29\00:08:18.63 All right. 00:08:18.66\00:08:20.00 The experience of being with the kids 00:08:20.03\00:08:21.36 and presenting at the two different schools, 00:08:21.40\00:08:22.73 one on the mission station and one off site. 00:08:22.76\00:08:25.17 That's amazing. 00:08:25.20\00:08:26.57 So that, you know, hearing you talk about this, 00:08:26.60\00:08:29.10 'cause then you talked about a lot 00:08:29.14\00:08:30.47 just in those few minutes, 00:08:30.51\00:08:32.11 you're following the commission that Christ has given us. 00:08:32.14\00:08:34.34 And that is to take the gospel to the world. 00:08:34.38\00:08:35.91 And sometimes that means literally 00:08:35.94\00:08:37.65 taking the gospel to a whole another world. 00:08:37.68\00:08:40.02 In this case, you know, third world countries in which, 00:08:40.05\00:08:43.42 you know, people haven't probably 00:08:43.45\00:08:44.79 even heard the name of Christ, 00:08:44.82\00:08:46.35 but you guys are over there building schools 00:08:46.39\00:08:47.96 and sharing the good news of gospel of Jesus Christ 00:08:47.99\00:08:50.96 with, you know, young folks 00:08:50.99\00:08:52.59 and who knows all kinds of ages. 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.73 I suppose. 00:08:54.76\00:08:56.10 It's very amazing to us to go over there and visit 00:08:56.13\00:08:57.97 and be at the primary school and to hear their stories. 00:08:58.00\00:09:00.60 Sure. 00:09:00.64\00:09:01.97 I mean, the teachers will talk to us and say 00:09:02.00\00:09:04.17 that child walks to school an hour and a half each way, 00:09:04.21\00:09:07.74 and we're talking a second or third grader 00:09:07.78\00:09:10.05 and they say in the rainy season, 00:09:10.08\00:09:11.41 it's hard for us to get the kids here 00:09:11.45\00:09:12.78 because they won't come if it's raining. 00:09:12.81\00:09:14.15 Sure. 00:09:14.18\00:09:15.52 And these are, 00:09:15.55\00:09:16.89 I mean, these kids are coming from a wide area 00:09:16.92\00:09:18.85 and you know, they're not Adventist kids. 00:09:18.89\00:09:20.92 Amen. 00:09:20.96\00:09:22.29 And so just being able to go 00:09:22.32\00:09:23.66 and sing the songs of Jesus with them 00:09:23.69\00:09:25.63 to present the Bible stories, 00:09:25.66\00:09:27.53 we just, we walk ways. 00:09:27.56\00:09:29.66 I believe more blessed 00:09:29.70\00:09:31.07 than what we can leave with the kids. 00:09:31.10\00:09:32.43 Amen. 00:09:32.47\00:09:33.80 This is a perfect example of what true education is 00:09:33.84\00:09:35.67 because, you know, a lot of people, 00:09:35.70\00:09:37.64 when they think of education, 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.01 they think of those primary subjects, 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.38 math, science, history, 00:09:40.41\00:09:41.74 you know, English, writing, literature, 00:09:41.78\00:09:43.11 all those other things. 00:09:43.14\00:09:44.48 But you know, we're counseled and we're told that 00:09:44.51\00:09:46.72 this is the blessing of having a Christian 00:09:46.75\00:09:48.92 in this case Adventist school system. 00:09:48.95\00:09:50.55 Because while all of that 00:09:50.59\00:09:52.05 other those other primary subjects are taught. 00:09:52.09\00:09:54.16 You guys spend a bulk of your time 00:09:54.19\00:09:55.59 or majority of your time 00:09:55.62\00:09:56.96 sharing the gospel, learning of Christ 00:09:56.99\00:09:58.59 and sharing Christ with others. 00:09:58.63\00:10:00.10 And this is exciting to hear because, 00:10:00.13\00:10:02.13 you know, especially 00:10:02.16\00:10:03.50 when you see these young people here, 00:10:03.53\00:10:05.00 you know, we live in a world today 00:10:05.03\00:10:06.37 with so many different distractions. 00:10:06.40\00:10:07.74 And so, you know, it just seems like it's very difficult 00:10:07.77\00:10:09.20 to get young people involved, 00:10:09.24\00:10:10.71 but to see you guys here 00:10:10.74\00:10:12.71 and to hear that you're involved, 00:10:12.74\00:10:14.68 that excites me. 00:10:14.71\00:10:16.04 And so, if you're okay, 00:10:16.08\00:10:18.08 I'm gonna transition to Hailey at this time. 00:10:18.11\00:10:19.68 Hailey, share with us 00:10:19.71\00:10:21.25 because we know you're deeply involved in the missions 00:10:21.28\00:10:24.12 that Brother Gary was speaking of. 00:10:24.15\00:10:25.92 So, tell us your story? 00:10:25.95\00:10:27.32 So this year I... 00:10:27.36\00:10:28.86 Oh, not this year, I apologize. 00:10:28.89\00:10:30.63 Last year I decided to go to La Vida, New Mexico, 00:10:30.66\00:10:33.86 which is just like the small school, 00:10:33.90\00:10:36.46 literally in the middle of nowhere. 00:10:36.50\00:10:37.93 It's just a desert. 00:10:37.97\00:10:39.77 My plan originally was for senior year 00:10:39.80\00:10:42.77 to go overseas to Africa, 00:10:42.80\00:10:44.41 but due to COVID, we weren't allowed, 00:10:44.44\00:10:46.17 so back to La Vida. 00:10:46.21\00:10:49.08 Whenever I went our chaplain last year, 00:10:49.11\00:10:51.65 Pastor Rick asked me to head 00:10:51.68\00:10:54.38 the week of prayer for their school 00:10:54.42\00:10:56.12 'cause we were there for a week. 00:10:56.15\00:10:57.49 Right. 00:10:57.52\00:10:58.85 And so, the first night we had a group of students 00:10:58.89\00:11:02.36 had songs already to sing. 00:11:02.39\00:11:04.56 One of them, I remember specifically, 00:11:04.59\00:11:05.99 we are soldiers and we got up there. 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.36 We were so excited. 00:11:07.40\00:11:08.73 We sing these songs, 00:11:08.76\00:11:10.10 but we couldn't connect to the kids. 00:11:10.13\00:11:11.47 It was a struggle because they just... 00:11:11.50\00:11:12.83 They were sitting there 00:11:12.87\00:11:14.20 and they were such sweet children. 00:11:14.24\00:11:15.57 We love them, but they just... They weren't singing. 00:11:15.60\00:11:17.11 And I could feel that 00:11:17.14\00:11:18.47 the connection just was not there. 00:11:18.51\00:11:19.97 And so, I remember going back to the rooms 00:11:20.01\00:11:22.51 that they had provided for us that night. 00:11:22.54\00:11:24.31 And I was just, I was pretty distraught. 00:11:24.35\00:11:26.41 I'm not gonna lie. 00:11:26.45\00:11:27.78 It was really hard 00:11:27.82\00:11:29.15 because I wanted to connect with these kids. 00:11:29.18\00:11:30.52 And so I remember I sat there and I prayed. 00:11:30.55\00:11:33.22 It was like, God, how can we connect 00:11:33.25\00:11:35.86 with these children? 00:11:35.89\00:11:37.23 And so, I remember specifically that I left, 00:11:37.26\00:11:41.46 I went outside of the room 00:11:41.50\00:11:42.83 and I talked to one of the staff 00:11:42.86\00:11:44.20 that had gone with us to La Vida. 00:11:44.23\00:11:46.20 And she had told me, she's like, you know what? 00:11:46.23\00:11:48.84 Why not just go over to the dorm rooms 00:11:48.87\00:11:51.11 and just talk with them, 00:11:51.14\00:11:52.47 ask them, you know, 00:11:52.51\00:11:53.84 what kind of songs do you wanna sing like, 00:11:53.88\00:11:56.11 what interests you? 00:11:56.14\00:11:57.48 And so, me and a friend decided to go over 00:11:57.51\00:11:59.71 and we went to their dorm rooms 00:11:59.75\00:12:01.45 and it was really like interesting. 00:12:01.48\00:12:02.95 I love talking to them 'cause they were so sweet. 00:12:02.98\00:12:05.45 And basically they just explained, 00:12:05.49\00:12:07.12 you know, we don't sing those types of songs. 00:12:07.16\00:12:09.42 We have different songs that we'd like to sing. 00:12:09.46\00:12:11.29 And so we learned the songs that they loved 00:12:11.33\00:12:13.40 and we sang them and they interacted. 00:12:13.43\00:12:16.70 It was just a great connection. 00:12:16.73\00:12:18.07 And so, I find that really, really awesome. 00:12:18.10\00:12:21.20 The fact that you can't just... 00:12:21.24\00:12:24.61 Not, you cannot connect with someone, 00:12:24.64\00:12:26.68 but then pray about it and then God will help you. 00:12:26.71\00:12:29.64 And I actually have a picture, 00:12:29.68\00:12:31.01 there are two pictures that I'd like to share. 00:12:31.05\00:12:33.01 Yeah. Let's pull those up and show them. 00:12:33.05\00:12:34.38 You could tell us about them. 00:12:34.42\00:12:35.75 So the first picture is just the children. 00:12:35.78\00:12:37.85 They were so sweet. 00:12:37.89\00:12:40.06 We got to go 00:12:40.09\00:12:41.42 to a bunch of different hiking areas with them, 00:12:41.46\00:12:43.63 got to interact with them. 00:12:43.66\00:12:45.03 And then the next picture. 00:12:45.06\00:12:47.13 So, you know, on every mission trip, 00:12:47.16\00:12:49.00 you can connect with the kid. 00:12:49.03\00:12:50.97 That's kind of how it goes. 00:12:51.00\00:12:52.33 And Kate here was the kid that I connected with the most. 00:12:52.37\00:12:56.30 During our praise team, 00:12:56.34\00:12:58.31 I would be strumming my ukulele. 00:12:58.34\00:13:00.71 And I found out afterwards that she played ukulele. 00:13:00.74\00:13:03.35 Okay. 00:13:03.38\00:13:04.71 And so, together we would sit down 00:13:04.75\00:13:07.58 and just play our ukuleles in our free time because... 00:13:07.62\00:13:10.15 Amazing. 00:13:10.19\00:13:11.52 Yeah, and it was just amazing to interact with them. 00:13:11.55\00:13:13.29 And then a couple of other things that we did 00:13:13.32\00:13:14.92 besides just the week of prayer was fixing a sewage line, 00:13:14.96\00:13:19.16 which was very interesting. 00:13:19.19\00:13:20.53 Okay. 00:13:20.56\00:13:21.90 We plumbed, we got plumbers in the group, too. 00:13:21.93\00:13:23.50 All right. Exactly. 00:13:23.53\00:13:24.87 There was four of us girls, actually, 00:13:24.90\00:13:26.57 the guys were working somewhere else. 00:13:26.60\00:13:28.27 And so four of us girls and the staff 00:13:28.30\00:13:30.21 that fixed the sewage line, and I'm gonna say this, 00:13:30.24\00:13:33.71 I stepped in something 00:13:33.74\00:13:35.08 that I wish I would have not have stepped in, 00:13:35.11\00:13:36.98 but you know, it's an experience 00:13:37.01\00:13:38.35 and it's something... 00:13:38.38\00:13:39.71 It's a humbling experience. 00:13:39.75\00:13:41.08 It is, it is. 00:13:41.12\00:13:42.45 But I really, really enjoyed it. 00:13:42.48\00:13:43.82 It was amazing. That's amazing. 00:13:43.85\00:13:45.19 Praise the Lord that, you know, 00:13:45.22\00:13:46.55 hearing what you just told about the story, 00:13:46.59\00:13:48.22 you know, the kids, it was hard to connect with them at first, 00:13:48.26\00:13:50.33 but then after you went over 00:13:50.36\00:13:51.83 and visited them and talk with them, 00:13:51.86\00:13:53.23 that is a direct example of an expression 00:13:53.26\00:13:55.53 of what we find 00:13:55.56\00:13:56.90 in what's called Christ method alone, 00:13:56.93\00:13:58.93 which Mrs. White says the only method of true success 00:13:58.97\00:14:02.07 in reaching the heart and souls of men 00:14:02.10\00:14:04.41 that Christ first mingled with them, right? 00:14:04.44\00:14:07.28 You know, sympathizing with their needs, 00:14:07.31\00:14:08.84 meeting their needs. 00:14:08.88\00:14:10.21 And so that's exactly what you were doing, 00:14:10.25\00:14:11.58 playing ukulele. 00:14:11.61\00:14:12.95 That's awesome. 00:14:12.98\00:14:14.32 We have to have those personal connections 00:14:14.35\00:14:15.68 if we're gonna reach the heart of man. 00:14:15.72\00:14:17.05 So thank you, Hailey. 00:14:17.09\00:14:18.42 That's a blessing 00:14:18.45\00:14:19.79 and I will never forget your plumbing story too. 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.89 That's an interesting story as well. 00:14:21.92\00:14:23.63 I will never either. All right. 00:14:23.66\00:14:26.36 So, Bryan, my man, 00:14:26.39\00:14:28.56 so you were very much involved in the missions 00:14:28.60\00:14:31.43 as Brother Gary was bringing out. 00:14:31.47\00:14:33.44 So tell us your story as well? 00:14:33.47\00:14:34.80 So I had the privilege to go Tanzania last year to Africa 00:14:34.84\00:14:37.87 and quite experienced. 00:14:37.91\00:14:39.24 I'm just flying and a lot of delays, 00:14:39.27\00:14:41.58 but once getting there just the cultural change. 00:14:41.61\00:14:44.28 Oh, okay. 00:14:44.31\00:14:46.08 Kind of left the US once, 00:14:46.11\00:14:47.98 but like that was the first time 00:14:48.02\00:14:49.35 I can remember in detail 00:14:49.38\00:14:50.72 and it was different from the US and... 00:14:50.75\00:14:52.22 All right. 00:14:52.25\00:14:53.59 Once we got to the mission site in Kibidula. 00:14:53.62\00:14:57.93 We didn't have a plumbing system. 00:14:57.96\00:14:59.39 We were... 00:14:59.43\00:15:00.76 So that was a nice unique experience. 00:15:00.80\00:15:03.00 No showers, but that was fun. 00:15:03.03\00:15:04.63 You know you learn how to be grateful. 00:15:04.67\00:15:07.07 Something that we take granted for here in the US 00:15:07.10\00:15:08.77 and once we went to the Kibidula School, 00:15:08.80\00:15:10.97 I was like, I saw the kids and I was kind of worried that 00:15:11.01\00:15:14.04 what we were gonna teach them 00:15:14.08\00:15:15.41 or tell them that they were gonna remember, 00:15:15.44\00:15:18.38 or once we've gone, 00:15:18.41\00:15:19.75 they might forget after a couple of weeks. 00:15:19.78\00:15:21.12 Right. 00:15:21.15\00:15:22.48 But then we have one of our adults Miss Evelyn 00:15:22.52\00:15:23.85 came up 'cause she's been there years before, 00:15:23.89\00:15:25.72 she started singing a song or start with a word, 00:15:25.75\00:15:29.72 and then they would finish the rest of the song 00:15:29.76\00:15:31.69 or memory verse over the years they've been there. 00:15:31.73\00:15:33.80 And I was really impressed 00:15:33.83\00:15:35.16 'cause I was like, okay, maybe what I teach won't... 00:15:35.20\00:15:38.20 You know, I'll stick around. 00:15:38.23\00:15:39.57 So that was really exciting. 00:15:39.60\00:15:41.60 Amen. 00:15:41.64\00:15:42.97 I think there's a picture of the group we went with. 00:15:43.00\00:15:44.94 Yeah. Let's pull the picture up. 00:15:44.97\00:15:46.68 So this is you in Tanzania? 00:15:46.71\00:15:48.48 Yes. Okay. 00:15:48.51\00:15:49.84 All right. 00:15:49.88\00:15:51.21 So yeah, the girls got stay in that, on building. 00:15:51.25\00:15:53.55 The guys got to stay in the dorm 00:15:53.58\00:15:54.92 where the other students would stay with. 00:15:54.95\00:15:57.42 So we got to sleep with them. 00:15:57.45\00:15:59.79 It was really fun, but teaching them all this, 00:15:59.82\00:16:04.59 later that week, 00:16:04.63\00:16:05.96 we taught them how to put a band aid on 00:16:05.99\00:16:07.40 because they don't have that like, 00:16:07.43\00:16:08.80 they don't have that. 00:16:08.83\00:16:10.17 Wow. 00:16:10.20\00:16:11.53 So they will come over like, did we put this on right? 00:16:11.57\00:16:14.30 Or one of them got scraped playing soccer 00:16:14.34\00:16:16.30 and we're like, oh, you put it on here. 00:16:16.34\00:16:18.31 You know, clean it. So it wouldn't get infected. 00:16:18.34\00:16:20.11 And that was really fun. They remember everything. 00:16:20.14\00:16:22.24 And then later after we did the Kibidula program, 00:16:22.28\00:16:26.31 we will go to the Liberty School 00:16:26.35\00:16:28.22 and they hadn't heard much about Christ 00:16:28.25\00:16:31.59 and neither had the teacher. 00:16:31.62\00:16:32.95 So we teach the kids the program, 00:16:32.99\00:16:34.99 tell them about God. 00:16:35.02\00:16:36.36 And then they'll do, we have a little project afterwards. 00:16:36.39\00:16:38.03 Sure. 00:16:38.06\00:16:39.43 And in the Kibidula School, the teachers weren't involved, 00:16:39.46\00:16:42.50 they were just making sure that kids will behave, 00:16:42.53\00:16:44.07 but in the Liberty School, 00:16:44.10\00:16:45.43 it was cool to see the teachers 00:16:45.47\00:16:46.80 also wanting to do the project with the kids 00:16:46.84\00:16:48.47 and we're helping them. 00:16:48.50\00:16:49.84 And they're asking questions and this really... 00:16:49.87\00:16:52.67 It's really cool and unique that they're grateful 00:16:52.71\00:16:54.94 for the little things they have that. 00:16:54.98\00:16:57.05 Over here in the US we'll get really upset 00:16:57.08\00:16:59.31 if our shoes got dirty, but they don't have shoes. 00:16:59.35\00:17:01.75 Their shoes like would just wear out the soles. 00:17:01.78\00:17:04.19 They don't even have sole under their shoes. 00:17:04.22\00:17:05.55 There's just barefoot and just the shoe around them. 00:17:05.59\00:17:08.39 That's amazing. So it's pretty cool. 00:17:08.42\00:17:10.53 And they were I think were special. 00:17:10.56\00:17:12.23 This always stick with me was balloons, 00:17:12.26\00:17:14.70 they will inflate them, 00:17:14.73\00:17:16.06 but then they will like untie them 00:17:16.10\00:17:17.53 so they can keep the balloons. 00:17:17.57\00:17:18.90 So it can be in their memory or it wouldn't pop. 00:17:18.93\00:17:21.97 So that was really cool to see that. 00:17:22.00\00:17:23.34 That is awesome. 00:17:23.37\00:17:24.71 So you know talking about 00:17:24.74\00:17:26.37 obviously a giant cultural change, 00:17:26.41\00:17:29.14 a cultural shock that someone might say 00:17:29.18\00:17:30.95 from going to America over to Tanzania. 00:17:30.98\00:17:33.95 You know, there, obviously here in America, 00:17:33.98\00:17:35.58 it's, we hear it often, 00:17:35.62\00:17:37.25 the notorious that Americans are very complacent. 00:17:37.29\00:17:39.89 It's hard to reach Americans with the gospel 00:17:39.92\00:17:41.79 because of our culture and the distractions, 00:17:41.82\00:17:44.19 and all that did... 00:17:44.23\00:17:45.93 When you went over there, 00:17:45.96\00:17:47.30 did you experience any challenges 00:17:47.33\00:17:48.86 as far as people receiving, 00:17:48.90\00:17:50.83 or did you find that it was easier 00:17:50.87\00:17:52.83 to minister to someone in Tanzania 00:17:52.87\00:17:54.57 as it would be here in the United States? 00:17:54.60\00:17:56.94 I personally felt like 00:17:56.97\00:17:58.31 it was easier to minister to the kids 00:17:58.34\00:17:59.91 'cause they were willing to learn. 00:17:59.94\00:18:01.74 They look forward to this date 00:18:01.78\00:18:03.21 that we were gonna come and teach them. 00:18:03.24\00:18:04.88 They were... 00:18:04.91\00:18:06.31 We all get to the school 00:18:06.35\00:18:08.25 and there'll be there to sing the national song. 00:18:08.28\00:18:10.12 And then after that, 00:18:10.15\00:18:11.75 they'll run to the rooms 00:18:11.79\00:18:13.12 like they were hiding from something, 00:18:13.15\00:18:14.49 but then our nowhere desk chairs, 00:18:14.52\00:18:16.93 like they were getting all the things they can sit on 00:18:16.96\00:18:18.76 took us to where we were gonna have our VBS 00:18:18.79\00:18:21.13 and they were just ready to learn. 00:18:21.16\00:18:23.06 It was pretty cool 'cause at least here in the US, 00:18:23.10\00:18:25.50 like not every kid is willing to like sit and listen 00:18:25.53\00:18:28.77 and the kids there, they were quiet. 00:18:28.80\00:18:31.27 They were willing to listen. They were involved. 00:18:31.31\00:18:33.38 They were singing. It was pretty cool. 00:18:33.41\00:18:34.94 That's amazing. 00:18:34.98\00:18:36.31 How joyful they were. 00:18:36.34\00:18:37.68 True joy. 00:18:37.71\00:18:39.05 Brother Gary, you gotta be proud of these kids. 00:18:39.08\00:18:40.42 I am. 00:18:40.45\00:18:41.78 I think Bryan had a picture, 00:18:41.82\00:18:43.15 maybe a story about playing soccer with them. 00:18:43.18\00:18:44.52 Yeah. Show us that one. 00:18:44.55\00:18:45.89 So we have a picture of Bryan and some kids playing soccer. 00:18:45.92\00:18:48.82 Let's see if we can pull that up. 00:18:48.86\00:18:50.73 So I remember this is at the Liberty School 00:18:50.76\00:18:53.83 and are Swedish. 00:18:53.86\00:18:55.80 It was really cool. 00:18:55.83\00:18:57.17 They love soccer, really competitive. 00:18:57.20\00:19:00.54 And so I usually don't see... 00:19:00.57\00:19:04.14 I wouldn't say they got in a fight, 00:19:04.17\00:19:05.51 but like when they tap each other 00:19:05.54\00:19:06.88 just more aggressive than 00:19:06.91\00:19:08.41 what it would be here in the US. 00:19:08.44\00:19:09.78 So I was worried, 00:19:09.81\00:19:11.15 I thought I'd have to break up something, 00:19:11.18\00:19:12.51 but they were just, that's how they are. 00:19:12.55\00:19:13.88 It's just the way they do things, huh? 00:19:13.92\00:19:15.35 Yeah. So that was pretty cool. 00:19:15.38\00:19:16.72 Just that culture change, like I said, it was different. 00:19:16.75\00:19:18.79 So you have to adapt quick. 00:19:18.82\00:19:20.36 That's cool. 00:19:20.39\00:19:21.72 So again, just seeing that picture there, 00:19:21.76\00:19:25.06 you with the kids and playing soccer, 00:19:25.09\00:19:26.66 this is an opportunity for you 00:19:26.70\00:19:28.03 to connect with them on a personal level. 00:19:28.06\00:19:29.83 We can't expect to win people's confidence and to, 00:19:29.86\00:19:32.57 you know, again, 00:19:32.60\00:19:33.94 as it says to bid them, to follow Jesus, 00:19:33.97\00:19:35.64 if we don't first have that personal connection. 00:19:35.67\00:19:37.61 So I could imagine that in your mission experiences 00:19:37.64\00:19:40.68 while you, I'm sure you're sharing 00:19:40.71\00:19:42.08 a lot of Christ in His Word, 00:19:42.11\00:19:43.61 I'm sure there's probably a lot of time 00:19:43.65\00:19:45.25 that you spend connecting on a personal level 00:19:45.28\00:19:47.75 with these people, 00:19:47.78\00:19:49.12 getting to know them, doing things with them, 00:19:49.15\00:19:50.72 whether it's recreational activities 00:19:50.75\00:19:52.45 as we just saw there. 00:19:52.49\00:19:53.82 So, yeah, that's awesome. 00:19:53.86\00:19:55.32 Praise the Lord. 00:19:55.36\00:19:56.69 Well, Brother Gary, we have just a few seconds 00:19:56.73\00:19:59.49 before we have to switch out here, 00:19:59.53\00:20:01.16 but I just wanna say thank you guys 00:20:01.20\00:20:02.93 for coming on and for being with us. 00:20:02.96\00:20:05.27 And it's a blessing to have you guys here with us 00:20:05.30\00:20:07.70 and to see what's happening at Sunnydale Adventist Academy, 00:20:07.74\00:20:10.97 as you guys are watching us, if you're just now tuning in, 00:20:11.01\00:20:13.64 we have Sunnydale Adventist Academy 00:20:13.68\00:20:15.68 in the house with us. 00:20:15.71\00:20:17.05 We're here with Brother Gary Russell, 00:20:17.08\00:20:18.48 principal of Sunnydale Academy. 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.75 And as you have just seen, 00:20:20.78\00:20:22.12 as we have been discussing the last few minutes, 00:20:22.15\00:20:24.25 these guys are deeply involved. 00:20:24.29\00:20:26.12 Not, obviously not just in schoolwork 00:20:26.15\00:20:28.39 while that's important into the mission 00:20:28.42\00:20:31.16 and into the gospel of Jesus Christ 00:20:31.19\00:20:33.83 and sharing the gospel with the world. 00:20:33.86\00:20:35.73 And so that's what 00:20:35.76\00:20:37.10 true Adventist education is all about. 00:20:37.13\00:20:39.13 And I'm proud to have you guys here. 00:20:39.17\00:20:40.67 So what we're gonna do now, 00:20:40.70\00:20:42.04 we're going to actually take the time now 00:20:42.07\00:20:43.41 and go to a song. 00:20:43.44\00:20:44.77 I got my brother in Christ, Brother Tim, Parton. 00:20:44.81\00:20:46.98 He's going to be playing a special number for 00:20:47.01\00:20:48.88 "There's Power in the Blood." 00:20:48.91\00:20:50.25 And when we come back, 00:20:50.28\00:20:51.61 we're gonna switch out. 00:20:51.65\00:20:52.98 We're going to have a new group in here. 00:20:53.01\00:20:54.35 So we'll see you in just a moment. 00:20:54.38\00:20:55.72 Here's Brother Tim Parton. 00:20:55.75\00:20:57.09 Amen, thank you my brother, Tim. Parton. 00:24:04.24\00:24:06.78 He's always a blessing, he's an incredible pianist 00:24:06.81\00:24:09.01 and I appreciate your, your music, brother. 00:24:09.04\00:24:11.08 It was such a blessing. 00:24:11.11\00:24:12.45 We have switched out some people. 00:24:12.48\00:24:13.88 We now have some new faces here with us as we... 00:24:13.92\00:24:16.69 If you're just now tuning in, 00:24:16.72\00:24:18.05 we have Sunnydale Adventist Academy with us 00:24:18.09\00:24:20.79 and sitting across from me at the other end 00:24:20.82\00:24:23.46 is the chaplain for Sunnydale Adventist Academy, 00:24:23.49\00:24:26.29 Victoria Tobing. 00:24:26.33\00:24:27.66 How are you? I'm good. How are you doing? 00:24:27.70\00:24:29.03 It's a blessing to have you guys. 00:24:29.06\00:24:30.60 And we also have a couple of new students in here. 00:24:30.63\00:24:32.60 We've Ashlyn Bonnei, and you're... 00:24:32.63\00:24:35.10 What grade are you in? I'm a senior. 00:24:35.14\00:24:36.50 You're a senior. Okay. 00:24:36.54\00:24:37.87 I think all of you are all seniors. 00:24:37.91\00:24:39.24 Yeah, we're all seniors. I just wanted to confirm that. 00:24:39.27\00:24:40.61 And we also have Hannah Ikpeama. 00:24:40.64\00:24:42.54 Did I say that right? Yes. 00:24:42.58\00:24:43.91 All right. 00:24:43.95\00:24:45.28 So Hannah, Ashlyn and Victoria, 00:24:45.31\00:24:47.22 it's such a blessing to have you guys here as well. 00:24:47.25\00:24:49.35 And we're continuing our conversation 00:24:49.38\00:24:51.05 about the wonderful missions and involvement 00:24:51.09\00:24:53.72 that Sunnydale Adventist Academy is, 00:24:53.76\00:24:56.36 you know, as far as the mission 00:24:56.39\00:24:57.79 that Christ has placed upon you guys, 00:24:57.83\00:24:59.23 it's not just about the academics. 00:24:59.26\00:25:01.06 It's about continuing 00:25:01.10\00:25:02.66 to do all that we can to meet 00:25:02.70\00:25:05.03 that great commission that Christ has given us 00:25:05.07\00:25:06.77 in sharing the gospel. 00:25:06.80\00:25:08.14 And so on campus, 00:25:08.17\00:25:09.50 you guys have a campus ministries 00:25:09.54\00:25:11.64 that's very much involved 00:25:11.67\00:25:13.07 and I think that's what you're gonna 00:25:13.11\00:25:14.44 be talking to us about, Victoria? 00:25:14.48\00:25:15.81 Yeah, actually this year, we're trying a few new things. 00:25:15.84\00:25:17.41 And one of the new things that we're doing is 00:25:17.45\00:25:18.85 we have instead of one shop 00:25:18.88\00:25:20.38 and we've got a team of three chaplains. 00:25:20.42\00:25:22.35 So there's myself and two other chaplains 00:25:22.38\00:25:24.32 who are working together. 00:25:24.35\00:25:25.69 And that has the benefits of sharing the load 00:25:25.72\00:25:27.86 and exchanging ideas 00:25:27.89\00:25:29.32 and kind of having different perspectives. 00:25:29.36\00:25:31.59 But I think the biggest benefit to what we're trying new 00:25:31.63\00:25:34.90 is actually bringing the students in 00:25:34.93\00:25:36.87 and allowing this department be very student led. 00:25:36.90\00:25:39.97 And one of the things we've modeled it after was 00:25:40.00\00:25:42.80 the Union College campus ministries program 00:25:42.84\00:25:44.71 where Pastor Richard is the chaplain there. 00:25:44.74\00:25:47.74 And when I was a student there, 00:25:47.78\00:25:49.11 we had our programs completely run by students. 00:25:49.14\00:25:52.81 Vespers was planned by students. 00:25:52.85\00:25:54.28 Church was planned by students. 00:25:54.32\00:25:56.28 Different worship opportunities throughout the week. 00:25:56.32\00:25:58.22 The ministries were all planned and led by students, 00:25:58.25\00:26:00.59 and his role as a chaplain 00:26:00.62\00:26:01.96 was just to equip us and to empower us. 00:26:01.99\00:26:05.03 And so we kind of followed that model. 00:26:05.06\00:26:07.23 And what I noticed is 00:26:07.26\00:26:08.60 that student working underneath that model 00:26:08.63\00:26:10.80 is that after graduation, 00:26:10.83\00:26:12.87 we felt more bold in ministry 00:26:12.90\00:26:14.64 because we'd already been doing it. 00:26:14.67\00:26:16.00 It wasn't something new to us. 00:26:16.04\00:26:17.37 And so our goal with these kids, 00:26:17.41\00:26:18.74 it's the same thing 00:26:18.77\00:26:20.11 where after they leave Sunnydale, 00:26:20.14\00:26:21.98 they can still be bold in ministry 00:26:22.01\00:26:23.55 because they've already been doing it. 00:26:23.58\00:26:25.08 It's something they've already been a part of. 00:26:25.11\00:26:27.98 The other thing that we want to model it after 00:26:28.02\00:26:30.62 is something that Jesus did. 00:26:30.65\00:26:32.19 In John, we see that he wasn't doing the baptizing. 00:26:32.22\00:26:36.02 It wasn't him doing everything in ministry. 00:26:36.06\00:26:38.73 He partnered with His disciples. 00:26:38.76\00:26:40.26 He partnered with people in the town. 00:26:40.30\00:26:41.86 He sent out 70 at one point, 00:26:41.90\00:26:44.07 so that they could be part of that process with them. 00:26:44.10\00:26:46.07 And so we want our kids to, to see that 00:26:46.10\00:26:48.70 and to follow His example in that 00:26:48.74\00:26:50.21 where it's not just the chaplain 00:26:50.24\00:26:51.57 or just the principal, 00:26:51.61\00:26:53.14 it's something where we're asking you guys, 00:26:53.17\00:26:56.11 the students to partner with us and equipping them 00:26:56.14\00:26:58.38 and encouraging them to be a part of that too. 00:26:58.41\00:27:02.18 When we were looking a little bit early, 00:27:02.22\00:27:04.09 actually a few weeks, I think ago at staff meeting, 00:27:04.12\00:27:06.25 we were reading the book Education 00:27:06.29\00:27:08.22 and our principal brought up a quote 00:27:08.26\00:27:10.06 about how to treat students 00:27:10.09\00:27:11.76 and how to be in a relationship with them 00:27:11.79\00:27:13.63 that encourages trust. 00:27:13.66\00:27:15.20 And she talks in her own way. 00:27:15.23\00:27:16.56 In her book Education, she talks about how, 00:27:16.60\00:27:18.83 when a student is trusted, 00:27:18.87\00:27:20.74 they will be more likely to earn that trust 00:27:20.77\00:27:24.41 or to do things to deserve that trust in return. 00:27:24.44\00:27:27.04 And so it can be scary 00:27:27.08\00:27:28.48 to let a group of teenagers 00:27:28.51\00:27:31.31 plan everything for a weekend. 00:27:31.35\00:27:32.85 That would be daunting, 00:27:32.88\00:27:34.22 that would make someone nervous. 00:27:34.25\00:27:36.12 The adults might stay up all night worrying about it. 00:27:36.15\00:27:38.15 Right. 00:27:38.19\00:27:39.52 But if she's taught us that we can try that, 00:27:39.55\00:27:41.92 when we show them trust 00:27:41.96\00:27:43.29 that they will rise to that occasion, 00:27:43.32\00:27:46.06 and that's something that we wanted to try. 00:27:46.09\00:27:47.46 Jesus also did the same thing. 00:27:47.50\00:27:48.83 She talks about, I think in Desire of Ages, how, 00:27:48.86\00:27:51.50 when He was spending time with people, 00:27:51.53\00:27:53.37 His trust in them awakened their trust in Him. 00:27:53.40\00:27:56.24 And so, when we can have 00:27:56.27\00:27:57.61 that kind of relationship with the students 00:27:57.64\00:27:59.11 where I trust you guys to do the things 00:27:59.14\00:28:01.04 and to plan the programs 00:28:01.08\00:28:02.41 and to minister to your fellow students, 00:28:02.44\00:28:04.91 then we can be confident that they'll rise to the occasion. 00:28:04.95\00:28:07.55 So we've got a team of six student leaders, 00:28:07.58\00:28:10.79 we've got two sort of student chaplains 00:28:10.82\00:28:12.82 who are overseeing their fellow student leaders 00:28:12.85\00:28:16.56 and then several students under them. 00:28:16.59\00:28:17.96 And then we also have someone 00:28:17.99\00:28:19.33 who is particularly in charge 00:28:19.36\00:28:21.60 of getting all of our praise music together. 00:28:21.63\00:28:24.10 And so Ashlyn here, 00:28:24.13\00:28:25.47 she is actually one of our student chaplains to say, 00:28:25.50\00:28:28.80 she's one of our leaders of that student team. 00:28:28.84\00:28:31.17 And then Hannah here 00:28:31.21\00:28:32.54 is in charge of all of the music 00:28:32.57\00:28:33.91 in our worship experience, 00:28:33.94\00:28:35.28 where she manages people who are pulled in. 00:28:35.31\00:28:39.08 They also are very intentional about finding students 00:28:39.11\00:28:43.08 who haven't been involved yet. 00:28:43.12\00:28:44.62 Sure. 00:28:44.65\00:28:45.99 And finding someone who maybe didn't have the opportunity 00:28:46.02\00:28:47.66 to be a part of worship and saying, 00:28:47.69\00:28:49.49 "Hey, you wanna help me with this? 00:28:49.52\00:28:51.06 Or what would you like to see in worship? 00:28:51.09\00:28:52.63 Or how would you like to spend time worshiping God?" 00:28:52.66\00:28:54.86 And so that's their job 00:28:54.90\00:28:56.50 was to pull together the campus 00:28:56.53\00:28:58.90 and equip other students then 00:28:58.93\00:29:00.84 to also get involved in that way. 00:29:00.87\00:29:02.27 Yeah. That's awesome. 00:29:02.30\00:29:03.64 So you guys are leaders and so, 00:29:03.67\00:29:06.91 Hailey, talk to me about, 00:29:06.94\00:29:08.28 not Hailey, I'm sorry, Ashlyn. 00:29:08.31\00:29:09.91 I'm looking at my card here 00:29:09.94\00:29:11.28 and I have like five or six names here. 00:29:11.31\00:29:12.65 I wanna make sure I get your name right. 00:29:12.68\00:29:14.02 Ashlyn and Hannah. 00:29:14.05\00:29:15.38 So Ashlyn, tell us about 00:29:15.42\00:29:16.75 like what you do on as far as involvement 00:29:16.79\00:29:18.55 in the campus ministries as a leader? 00:29:18.59\00:29:19.92 Yeah. 00:29:19.95\00:29:21.29 So I'm a leader and my friend Mila is a leader. 00:29:21.32\00:29:23.99 And so we kind of have teams. 00:29:24.03\00:29:26.73 I have, it's me and Ethan, 00:29:26.76\00:29:29.10 and then she has other two students. 00:29:29.13\00:29:32.10 And so we kind of get together at the beginning of the week 00:29:32.13\00:29:35.24 and we kind of go by our run sheet that we have, 00:29:35.27\00:29:38.67 and we go like, okay, who's gonna do vespers, 00:29:38.71\00:29:41.81 special musics. 00:29:41.84\00:29:43.51 Like who's going to be charged of the sermons or scriptures. 00:29:43.55\00:29:46.21 And so we kind of just go down the list 00:29:46.25\00:29:47.85 and we go out and ask people 00:29:47.88\00:29:50.02 and hopefully hoping they say, yes. 00:29:50.05\00:29:53.79 All right. 00:29:53.82\00:29:55.16 It's kind of challenging having, 00:29:55.19\00:29:57.43 it's in the later of the year. 00:29:57.46\00:29:58.96 So a lot of people have already done it. 00:29:58.99\00:30:00.90 And so it's kinda discouraging when people say no, 00:30:00.93\00:30:04.03 but when we get that, yes, like have a new face, 00:30:04.07\00:30:06.70 it feels really rewarding. 00:30:06.74\00:30:08.10 That's awesome. 00:30:08.14\00:30:09.47 So like, okay, you get, 00:30:09.50\00:30:10.84 let's say you get that no from them. 00:30:10.87\00:30:12.64 And you're hoping that they participate, 00:30:12.67\00:30:15.44 is there a way that you encourage them? 00:30:15.48\00:30:17.48 Is there certain methods you use to encourage them 00:30:17.51\00:30:19.45 or do you just kind of just go to another person 00:30:19.48\00:30:22.02 and maybe come back to them later? 00:30:22.05\00:30:23.59 I try to encourage them. 00:30:23.62\00:30:24.95 I'm like, are you sure you don't want to. 00:30:24.99\00:30:27.46 You haven't gotten up there yet. 00:30:27.49\00:30:29.46 It'll be really fun, super quick. 00:30:29.49\00:30:31.16 Like when I ask people to do scripture, 00:30:31.19\00:30:33.19 I'm like, it'll be two lines, you can do it. 00:30:33.23\00:30:36.40 But then if they still say, no, 00:30:36.43\00:30:37.83 I just go on to the next person. 00:30:37.87\00:30:39.20 Okay. 00:30:39.23\00:30:40.57 So I'm guessing in the beginning, 00:30:40.60\00:30:41.94 when you guys started this, she... 00:30:41.97\00:30:43.30 I'm guessing Victoria came to you or how, 00:30:43.34\00:30:44.84 however it happened and you were kind of drafted 00:30:44.87\00:30:47.38 to be one of the leaders. 00:30:47.41\00:30:48.74 Had you done this, something like this before, 00:30:48.78\00:30:50.48 or was this something new that you've done? 00:30:50.51\00:30:52.08 This is something new. Okay. 00:30:52.11\00:30:54.22 So were you nervous in the beginning 00:30:54.25\00:30:56.75 to know that you were gonna be leading out 00:30:56.79\00:30:58.19 and, you know, basically being a leader 00:30:58.22\00:31:00.76 in front of your student body? 00:31:00.79\00:31:02.12 I was nervous a little bit, but after my trip to India, 00:31:02.16\00:31:07.76 I kind of felt more ready to do spiritual things. 00:31:07.80\00:31:12.33 Okay. All right. Okay. 00:31:12.37\00:31:14.50 And Hannah, 00:31:14.54\00:31:15.90 you're the praise and worship leader, right? 00:31:15.94\00:31:17.81 All right. So talk a little bit about that? 00:31:17.84\00:31:20.31 So it's a new program to this year 00:31:20.34\00:31:23.35 having a student lead praise team and team. 00:31:23.38\00:31:26.15 So it's been... 00:31:26.18\00:31:28.02 We've been crafting and like figuring out 00:31:28.05\00:31:30.09 what's going to work best. 00:31:30.12\00:31:31.45 But basically what I do is set up teams to do each week. 00:31:31.49\00:31:36.89 We got it. 00:31:36.93\00:31:38.26 So that it's kind of in a rotation now, 00:31:38.29\00:31:39.63 so that people don't have to go on all the time. 00:31:39.66\00:31:41.43 But at first it was just, 00:31:41.46\00:31:43.87 "Hey, do you wanna do praise team?" 00:31:43.90\00:31:45.23 Okay, great. 00:31:45.27\00:31:46.60 And it was like that, we have a few instruments. 00:31:46.63\00:31:48.54 We tried to reach out to get a lot of instruments 00:31:48.57\00:31:51.51 at the beginning of the year 00:31:51.54\00:31:52.87 and try and incorporate some new stuff. 00:31:52.91\00:31:54.24 But one of the major things 00:31:54.28\00:31:57.11 that made me wanna do this year was last year. 00:31:57.15\00:32:00.48 'Cause music speaks to me personally. 00:32:00.52\00:32:02.02 So I... 00:32:02.05\00:32:03.49 It's one of my favorite parts of a worship service. 00:32:03.52\00:32:05.79 And last year, sometimes I felt like 00:32:05.82\00:32:07.69 it was kind of lacking or whatever, 00:32:07.72\00:32:09.09 or it's not directed towards the youth. 00:32:09.12\00:32:11.79 So this year I wanted to focus on like, 00:32:11.83\00:32:13.73 okay, let's try and get things 00:32:13.76\00:32:15.16 that can include our people age group, so. 00:32:15.20\00:32:20.00 So how many people do you normally have 00:32:20.04\00:32:22.44 involved in a worship service when you bring up to appear? 00:32:22.47\00:32:26.14 We get, it's anywhere from four to like six 00:32:26.17\00:32:29.71 and then plus instruments. 00:32:29.74\00:32:31.55 Have you had any challenges 00:32:31.58\00:32:32.91 as far as getting people involved 00:32:32.95\00:32:35.32 or you know, I'm sure getting people together like that. 00:32:35.35\00:32:38.05 I mean, music, there's an added, 00:32:38.09\00:32:40.06 a little bit of an added challenge 00:32:40.09\00:32:41.42 because now, you know, not only do you have 00:32:41.46\00:32:43.32 all these people who are capable 00:32:43.36\00:32:44.69 of playing these instruments, 00:32:44.73\00:32:46.06 but now you have to bring them all together 00:32:46.09\00:32:47.43 and make them sound good, right. 00:32:47.46\00:32:48.80 And to do it in a collective kind of operative way. 00:32:48.83\00:32:52.40 So how do you... 00:32:52.43\00:32:53.77 Was there any challenges for you in that? 00:32:53.80\00:32:55.14 Yeah, starting out, we realized 00:32:55.17\00:32:56.50 we had some of the, like, they're all talented, 00:32:56.54\00:32:58.71 but like we had to specifically organize a group 00:32:58.74\00:33:01.88 so that they blended together and like made... 00:33:01.91\00:33:04.15 Sure. 00:33:04.18\00:33:05.51 Practices. You have lots of practices? 00:33:05.55\00:33:07.38 Practices, this has been hard to find schedules 00:33:07.42\00:33:09.15 'cause my schedule is full. 00:33:09.18\00:33:10.95 A lot of students who are on placing their schedules 00:33:10.99\00:33:12.92 are full and it's hard to find a matching time, 00:33:12.95\00:33:15.49 but we have set practices 00:33:15.52\00:33:16.86 and hour before every event too. 00:33:16.89\00:33:18.39 And then we try and find at least two in a week. 00:33:18.43\00:33:20.46 So let's talk about this 'cause I... 00:33:20.50\00:33:21.83 This is intriguing to me 00:33:21.86\00:33:23.20 because I'm guessing 00:33:23.23\00:33:25.03 before there was a student led praise team, 00:33:25.07\00:33:27.10 I'm guessing was that the adults that led out. 00:33:27.14\00:33:29.57 Have you guys noticed maybe a difference in 00:33:29.60\00:33:32.57 how the student body responds 00:33:32.61\00:33:35.24 to maybe a student led 00:33:35.28\00:33:36.68 versus maybe not a non-student led 00:33:36.71\00:33:39.41 praise team or worship service? 00:33:39.45\00:33:41.58 I can imagine 00:33:41.62\00:33:42.95 there's a little bit of a different response there. 00:33:42.98\00:33:44.75 Have you guys experienced that at all? 00:33:44.79\00:33:46.12 Is it... 00:33:46.15\00:33:47.49 Does it seem like maybe the students 00:33:47.52\00:33:48.86 are a little more open 00:33:48.89\00:33:50.23 to maybe participating in the worship service 00:33:50.26\00:33:52.36 because their peers are leading out versus 00:33:52.39\00:33:54.60 maybe the adults, 00:33:54.63\00:33:55.96 I guess, that's gotta be an added benefit. 00:33:56.00\00:33:58.10 This is my first year at Sunnydale. 00:33:58.13\00:33:59.50 And so I don't have anything to compare it to, 00:33:59.53\00:34:01.84 but I can say that oftentimes in my classroom, 00:34:01.87\00:34:05.07 after weekend is over, on Monday mornings, 00:34:05.11\00:34:08.08 we'll kind of debrief, 00:34:08.11\00:34:09.44 like how did worship go for you this weekend? 00:34:09.48\00:34:12.11 What did it look like to you? 00:34:12.15\00:34:13.48 What did you see that helped you connect with God? 00:34:13.52\00:34:16.69 And I've noticed how, 00:34:16.72\00:34:18.35 from the beginning of the year 00:34:18.39\00:34:19.72 to now near the end of the year, 00:34:19.75\00:34:21.09 when we have those with the student body at whole, 00:34:21.12\00:34:23.46 not just my leaders, 00:34:23.49\00:34:24.96 the students are more willing 00:34:24.99\00:34:26.66 to bring their ideas to the table. 00:34:26.70\00:34:29.23 And so I think one benefit is that 00:34:29.26\00:34:31.50 it's really showing other students 00:34:31.53\00:34:33.34 who may not be leaders this year, 00:34:33.37\00:34:34.77 that this is something you can be a part of. 00:34:34.80\00:34:36.17 Sure. 00:34:36.20\00:34:37.54 Maybe this year may be over, but next year, 00:34:37.57\00:34:39.17 your ideas can become part of our worship experience. 00:34:39.21\00:34:42.21 Sure. 00:34:42.24\00:34:43.58 So not to put you on the spot here, 00:34:43.61\00:34:44.95 but I just wanna just talk to you as a chaplain. 00:34:44.98\00:34:47.65 What have you learned to be the positive benefits 00:34:47.68\00:34:51.45 of getting the students involved? 00:34:51.49\00:34:53.92 Because, you know, as you said earlier, 00:34:53.96\00:34:55.79 you kind of hinted it. 00:34:55.82\00:34:57.16 You know, some adults may be a little nervous, 00:34:57.19\00:34:59.79 like, oh, I'm putting all this control 00:34:59.83\00:35:01.46 into the hands of these, 00:35:01.50\00:35:02.83 you know, unequipped, 00:35:02.86\00:35:04.40 you know, unpracticed unlearned students, 00:35:04.43\00:35:06.57 you know, some, from some people's perspective, 00:35:06.60\00:35:08.87 but what have you experienced in doing this? 00:35:08.90\00:35:12.54 What are some of the benefits 00:35:12.57\00:35:14.48 and teaching, leading, guiding these students 00:35:14.51\00:35:17.55 to lead out and become the leaders themselves? 00:35:17.58\00:35:19.91 What I keep in mind often is that 00:35:19.95\00:35:21.68 we don't keep our kids forever. 00:35:21.72\00:35:23.08 We have them for a max four years 00:35:23.12\00:35:25.05 and some kids we only have for a few months 00:35:25.09\00:35:27.16 before they move on to their next phase in life. 00:35:27.19\00:35:29.62 And so it's interesting, 00:35:29.66\00:35:31.33 perhaps not with these students, 00:35:31.36\00:35:32.69 I haven't had them yet, 00:35:32.73\00:35:34.06 but with former students at different schools, 00:35:34.10\00:35:35.53 it's interesting to see that 00:35:35.56\00:35:36.90 they're gonna end up in public universities. 00:35:36.93\00:35:39.17 They're gonna end up in Adventist universities. 00:35:39.20\00:35:41.17 They're going to end up in small churches 00:35:41.20\00:35:42.94 or huge churches. 00:35:42.97\00:35:44.37 And to be able to see how, 00:35:44.41\00:35:46.14 when they can relate to what it's like 00:35:46.17\00:35:48.01 to create a worship experience 00:35:48.04\00:35:49.84 and to invite others into worship, 00:35:49.88\00:35:52.21 then when they move on to their next phase in life, 00:35:52.25\00:35:54.95 not only can they empathize with the worship leaders there, 00:35:54.98\00:35:59.15 but they can then volunteer their skills, 00:35:59.19\00:36:01.32 that they can see that worship isn't something 00:36:01.36\00:36:03.76 that I'm passively part of. 00:36:03.79\00:36:05.76 This is something that I can be an active participant in. 00:36:05.79\00:36:09.30 Sure. That's awesome. 00:36:09.33\00:36:10.97 And I can imagine not to talk on a negative note or anything, 00:36:11.00\00:36:13.57 but we are living in different times 00:36:13.60\00:36:15.57 and it seems like the youth of today 00:36:15.60\00:36:17.44 just have so many more, 00:36:17.47\00:36:19.04 I mean, so many more challenges and distractions in the world 00:36:19.07\00:36:21.61 that we're living in today versus a couple of decades ago 00:36:21.64\00:36:24.35 for the youth growing up then. 00:36:24.38\00:36:26.51 You know, now that we're getting kids more involved, 00:36:26.55\00:36:29.22 you know, there's gotta be 00:36:29.25\00:36:30.59 some challenging aspects of that, right? 00:36:30.62\00:36:32.15 Where it kind of, 00:36:32.19\00:36:33.52 maybe it's difficult to encourage them. 00:36:33.56\00:36:35.09 Maybe it's difficult 00:36:35.12\00:36:36.46 to get them to agree to participate 00:36:36.49\00:36:38.03 because they themselves are still trying to learn 00:36:38.06\00:36:40.46 who Christ is, try to find their identity in Christ. 00:36:40.50\00:36:43.63 And I think that's a... 00:36:43.67\00:36:45.80 Whether it's a student, 00:36:45.83\00:36:47.17 who's part of the worship planning 00:36:47.20\00:36:48.54 or just students in general. 00:36:48.57\00:36:49.90 I think that when we have watched them 00:36:49.94\00:36:52.34 and given them the space to try things, 00:36:52.37\00:36:54.24 they're gonna make mistakes. 00:36:54.28\00:36:55.61 We as adults are gonna make mistakes. 00:36:55.64\00:36:56.98 Sure, yeah. 00:36:57.01\00:36:58.35 But then that's another opportunity 00:36:58.38\00:36:59.71 to show them that part of Jesus, 00:36:59.75\00:37:01.08 where in life, we're gonna make mistakes. 00:37:01.12\00:37:02.75 As hard as we try to plan things, 00:37:02.78\00:37:04.55 there's always gonna be something that could go wrong, 00:37:04.59\00:37:06.35 but here's how Christ responds 00:37:06.39\00:37:07.86 when we make mistakes with Him. 00:37:07.89\00:37:09.69 He doesn't hold it against us 00:37:09.72\00:37:11.69 and make us feel terrible about it. 00:37:11.73\00:37:13.50 But here, let me walk alongside you 00:37:13.53\00:37:15.23 and let's try this again. 00:37:15.26\00:37:16.60 Let me show you a new way 00:37:16.63\00:37:18.60 to become the person that He's got in mind 00:37:18.63\00:37:20.64 and kind of demonstrating that grace that He gives us 00:37:20.67\00:37:23.74 in real life with them. 00:37:23.77\00:37:25.41 Amen. 00:37:25.44\00:37:26.81 So, Ashlyn, not to put you on the spot, 00:37:26.84\00:37:29.68 but I just wanna ask you in being involved in this, 00:37:29.71\00:37:32.55 in a leadership capacity, 00:37:32.58\00:37:34.12 you know, how have you grown closer to your peers 00:37:34.15\00:37:36.75 as well as to Christ along the way? 00:37:36.79\00:37:39.42 I've grown a lot. 00:37:39.45\00:37:40.79 I used to just stay in my room for new year. 00:37:40.82\00:37:44.73 And so while doing canvas ministries, 00:37:44.76\00:37:49.00 I got closer with one of my other best friends 00:37:49.03\00:37:51.77 and I've gotten closer with the chaplains 00:37:51.80\00:37:55.30 and also my classmates, 00:37:55.34\00:37:57.44 which has benefited me a lot. 00:37:57.47\00:37:58.81 Amen. 00:37:58.84\00:38:00.18 So I'm excited that it went well. 00:38:00.21\00:38:02.21 Praise the Lord. Praise the Lord. 00:38:02.24\00:38:03.58 What about you, Hannah? 00:38:03.61\00:38:04.95 Yeah, it's really... 00:38:04.98\00:38:06.35 I mean, it's been really good. 00:38:06.38\00:38:08.05 I... Just 'cause music is like... 00:38:08.08\00:38:09.58 Sure. 00:38:09.62\00:38:10.95 It's just been such a blessing for me 00:38:10.99\00:38:12.32 to just like go on stage 00:38:12.35\00:38:14.76 and be able to praise and worship. 00:38:14.79\00:38:16.22 Praise and worship and lead out your student peers 00:38:16.26\00:38:18.33 that worship the Lord, right? 00:38:18.36\00:38:19.69 That's awesome. 00:38:19.73\00:38:21.06 So I understand you guys are also involved in missions 00:38:21.10\00:38:22.63 there at the school as well. 00:38:22.66\00:38:24.00 So tell us about the missions you're involved with? 00:38:24.03\00:38:26.23 So we've both been here for three years 00:38:26.27\00:38:29.04 and our sophomore year we went to La Vida. 00:38:29.07\00:38:32.91 Okay. 00:38:32.94\00:38:34.28 And last year, junior year, we got to go to India. 00:38:34.31\00:38:38.38 Oh, okay. 00:38:38.41\00:38:39.75 So talk a little bit about that? 00:38:39.78\00:38:41.12 What was your experience while you were there? 00:38:41.15\00:38:42.75 Was it a culture shock for you? 00:38:42.78\00:38:44.29 It was. 00:38:44.32\00:38:45.65 I was very excited to go. 00:38:45.69\00:38:47.96 And when I got on the plane 00:38:47.99\00:38:49.66 and we were stopping in Abu Dhabi, 00:38:49.69\00:38:51.83 I'm like, it finally hit me like, 00:38:51.86\00:38:53.73 "Oh, I'm going to India." 00:38:53.76\00:38:55.16 And so I got really nervous 00:38:55.20\00:38:56.90 and it took me a long time to get used to India. 00:38:56.93\00:39:00.17 Okay. 00:39:00.20\00:39:01.54 A very long time like two weeks. 00:39:01.57\00:39:03.27 What were some of the things that were different about it 00:39:03.30\00:39:05.07 that was just kind of a... 00:39:05.11\00:39:06.44 It was hot. 00:39:06.47\00:39:07.81 It was hot? Yeah. 00:39:07.84\00:39:09.18 The bedding situation, which was... 00:39:09.21\00:39:11.28 It was fine. Sure. 00:39:11.31\00:39:13.52 Challenges. Yeah. 00:39:13.55\00:39:14.98 The shower, like the bathroom. 00:39:15.02\00:39:16.89 It was... 00:39:16.92\00:39:18.45 A humbling experience. Yes. 00:39:18.49\00:39:20.96 Hailey was telling us earlier about her plumbing experience, 00:39:20.99\00:39:23.76 but I can imagine 00:39:23.79\00:39:25.13 you guys had some humbling experiences as well 00:39:25.16\00:39:26.83 while you were over there. 00:39:26.86\00:39:28.20 Yeah, squat pots. 00:39:28.23\00:39:29.56 What was that? Squat pots. 00:39:29.60\00:39:30.93 Oh, squat pots. Okay. 00:39:30.97\00:39:32.30 Interesting. All right. 00:39:32.33\00:39:33.67 So what about you? 00:39:33.70\00:39:35.04 Did you also go to the two places you mentioned? 00:39:35.07\00:39:37.01 Okay. What was your experience while you were there? 00:39:37.04\00:39:38.51 I'm going there. 00:39:38.54\00:39:39.87 Well, before I went there, I was struggling because 00:39:39.91\00:39:42.61 I wanted to go, but then I was like, 00:39:42.64\00:39:44.55 maybe I don't need to go maybe. 00:39:44.58\00:39:46.21 And I was going to say, okay, I'll just go next year, 00:39:46.25\00:39:49.15 which would have been this year. 00:39:49.18\00:39:50.52 So in the end it all worked out really good, 00:39:50.55\00:39:52.29 but I had Mr. Needles runs the mission trips 00:39:52.32\00:39:55.26 and things like that. 00:39:55.29\00:39:57.36 So he really encouraged me 00:39:57.39\00:39:58.73 and my parents really encouraged me 00:39:58.76\00:40:00.10 that I needed to go. 00:40:00.13\00:40:01.46 And I'm really glad I did. All right. 00:40:01.50\00:40:03.60 I'm kind of a home body, 00:40:03.63\00:40:05.13 but like I never had been on a plane, 00:40:05.17\00:40:07.10 never anything. 00:40:07.14\00:40:08.47 So it was like zero to 100. Okay. 00:40:08.50\00:40:10.91 So, I mean, it was an adjustment, 00:40:10.94\00:40:13.44 but it was good. 00:40:13.48\00:40:14.81 Okay. All right. 00:40:14.84\00:40:16.18 So, you know, while you guys were there, 00:40:16.21\00:40:17.55 what did you do while you were there? 00:40:17.58\00:40:19.95 Do you wanna? 00:40:19.98\00:40:21.32 Okay, 00:40:21.35\00:40:22.68 so we preached there, the sermons, 00:40:22.72\00:40:28.32 they have written for us, 00:40:28.36\00:40:30.09 but we were supposed to like make them our own. 00:40:30.13\00:40:31.59 Sure. 00:40:31.63\00:40:32.96 So you did like an evangelistic series? 00:40:32.99\00:40:34.33 Okay. 00:40:34.36\00:40:35.70 And we had a translator, 00:40:35.73\00:40:37.07 so I guess it's kind of new, 00:40:37.10\00:40:39.53 they're working on getting student translators 00:40:39.57\00:40:41.57 at that school 00:40:41.60\00:40:43.10 and pairing them with us from America. 00:40:43.14\00:40:46.24 And so it's, it's really cool to have a student 00:40:46.27\00:40:48.24 like student interaction. 00:40:48.28\00:40:49.64 Before I think it was adults. 00:40:49.68\00:40:51.58 And so it was hard 00:40:51.61\00:40:53.21 because at first you're trying to like 00:40:53.25\00:40:56.02 understand there's a language barrier 00:40:56.05\00:40:57.75 and you're preaching. 00:40:57.79\00:40:59.12 So it's important that your congregation 00:40:59.15\00:41:01.56 or your campsites were gonna understand what you're saying. 00:41:01.59\00:41:04.76 So that was the struggle I had was 00:41:04.79\00:41:06.96 being able to like get the flow 00:41:07.00\00:41:09.36 'cause things don't translate exactly the way. 00:41:09.40\00:41:12.13 I wasn't comfortable with my translator at first 00:41:12.17\00:41:14.40 and neither was he with me. 00:41:14.44\00:41:15.77 Right. 00:41:15.80\00:41:17.14 And so he wouldn't tell me, this doesn't quite make sense. 00:41:17.17\00:41:18.77 He would just kind of wing it. I see, sure. 00:41:18.81\00:41:20.41 And then the leader there from India had to tell us, 00:41:20.44\00:41:24.35 your campsite isn't getting what you're saying. 00:41:24.38\00:41:27.15 And I was like, oh, that's bad. 00:41:27.18\00:41:28.98 That's what we're here for. 00:41:29.02\00:41:30.35 And so we worked on that and... 00:41:30.39\00:41:32.59 Praise the Lord. 00:41:32.62\00:41:33.96 He ended up being a really good translator. 00:41:33.99\00:41:36.22 He's really funny. Everybody loved him. 00:41:36.26\00:41:38.03 Amen. Amen. 00:41:38.06\00:41:39.53 What about you, Ashlyn? How was your experience? 00:41:39.56\00:41:42.30 I loved it. 00:41:42.33\00:41:43.77 As I said, it took me a while to get used to it. 00:41:43.80\00:41:46.80 Going to my site, 00:41:46.84\00:41:48.27 it was a long drive in a little... 00:41:48.30\00:41:50.81 What's it called? 00:41:50.84\00:41:52.17 A car or a vehicle? 00:41:52.21\00:41:53.98 Some type of cart. 00:41:54.01\00:41:55.54 Oh, cart. Oh, okay. Yeah. 00:41:55.58\00:41:56.91 I know what you're talking about. 00:41:56.95\00:41:58.28 And it was a long drive there 00:41:58.31\00:42:00.42 and I'm by myself the first night... 00:42:00.45\00:42:03.08 Okay. I'm by myself. 00:42:03.12\00:42:05.85 It was a little intimidating? 00:42:05.89\00:42:07.22 Yes 'cause we were like on like 00:42:07.26\00:42:09.56 the same like site, site. 00:42:09.59\00:42:10.99 Sure. But they split us up. 00:42:11.03\00:42:13.06 And so she went this way and I went this way 00:42:13.09\00:42:15.46 and I was like, okay, I'm kind of freaking out 00:42:15.50\00:42:18.30 'cause I'm by myself. 00:42:18.33\00:42:19.67 And this is a very long cart ride 00:42:19.70\00:42:23.44 and we get stuck. 00:42:23.47\00:42:25.07 Okay. 00:42:25.11\00:42:26.44 So I'm just sitting there and it's cold. 00:42:26.47\00:42:28.74 And we finally got it 00:42:28.78\00:42:30.11 and we were a couple of minutes late 00:42:30.15\00:42:31.48 to my site, 00:42:31.51\00:42:32.85 but they were so excited. 00:42:32.88\00:42:34.75 And so that made me really happy. 00:42:34.78\00:42:36.52 And by the end of the night, I was expecting like 15. 00:42:36.55\00:42:40.26 When I got there, there was about 13. 00:42:40.29\00:42:43.26 So I'm like maybe like two more people will show up. 00:42:43.29\00:42:45.39 But at the end of the night, I got over 75 people. 00:42:45.43\00:42:47.80 Wow. 00:42:47.83\00:42:49.16 And so that was probably my biggest night. 00:42:49.20\00:42:51.40 And so I'm just really blessed for that. 00:42:51.43\00:42:53.00 So was this the first time 00:42:53.03\00:42:54.37 you guys had ever preached at all 00:42:54.40\00:42:55.74 or preached a sermon like that? 00:42:55.77\00:42:57.11 So, wow. Okay. 00:42:57.14\00:42:58.47 So the first time you've ever preached 00:42:58.51\00:42:59.84 it general ever at India. 00:42:59.87\00:43:02.88 And so while you're preaching, what was the experience doing? 00:43:02.91\00:43:05.91 Were you nervous? 00:43:05.95\00:43:07.28 Or what did the Lord just kind of get you through that? 00:43:07.32\00:43:09.65 Yeah. Okay. 00:43:09.68\00:43:11.29 When I was on the way there in my cart 00:43:11.32\00:43:14.72 I was shaking. 00:43:14.76\00:43:16.12 I was hugging my backpack. I was so scared. 00:43:16.16\00:43:19.03 And I was just really like, oh my, what am I gonna do? 00:43:19.06\00:43:22.73 But I mean, this is like, 00:43:22.76\00:43:25.13 it was a miracle to me 00:43:25.17\00:43:26.50 because I had never been this scared 00:43:26.53\00:43:28.70 and I just was praying. 00:43:28.74\00:43:30.11 And like, all of a sudden when I was done, 00:43:30.14\00:43:33.61 it's like this wave of like, just some peace over. 00:43:33.64\00:43:37.68 And that reminds me of the verse 00:43:37.71\00:43:39.05 in Philippians 4:6-7. 00:43:39.08\00:43:40.42 That's right. 00:43:40.45\00:43:41.78 The peace that surpasses all understanding. 00:43:41.82\00:43:43.15 I can't explain or understand where that came from, 00:43:43.18\00:43:45.95 or I can't explain, but it was just like amazing. 00:43:45.99\00:43:47.86 Yeah. 00:43:47.89\00:43:49.22 Same experience with you, right? 00:43:49.26\00:43:50.59 And at the end of the first night, 00:43:50.63\00:43:52.19 when I saw Hannah, 00:43:52.23\00:43:53.56 when we were waiting, I'm like, oh, thank God. 00:43:53.60\00:43:56.56 There she is. She's still good. 00:43:56.60\00:43:59.00 So, by the end of the seminar, did you guys pick up on the, 00:43:59.03\00:44:02.47 you know, did you become more encouraged, 00:44:02.50\00:44:05.14 more inspired and you know, more open? 00:44:05.17\00:44:07.18 Yeah, they were very loving. 00:44:07.21\00:44:08.54 Nerves gone and you had that more of an encouragement. 00:44:08.58\00:44:10.55 By the end of the, like the third day, 00:44:10.58\00:44:12.41 I was like, I can't wait to go. 00:44:12.45\00:44:14.08 I'm so excited. 00:44:14.12\00:44:15.65 I wanna see my people. 00:44:15.68\00:44:17.09 How did the people, 00:44:17.12\00:44:18.45 you know, the residents of India there were, 00:44:18.49\00:44:20.32 how did they respond? 00:44:20.36\00:44:21.72 Did they respond positively? 00:44:21.76\00:44:23.22 Yeah. Yeah. I've never... 00:44:23.26\00:44:24.79 I didn't have a bad, 00:44:24.83\00:44:27.56 like any bad people. 00:44:27.60\00:44:29.00 That's amazing. 00:44:29.03\00:44:30.37 Mine was a little different because... 00:44:30.40\00:44:32.43 We have this Jesus video, we show part of it 00:44:32.47\00:44:35.57 after we're done preaching every night. 00:44:35.60\00:44:38.67 And my area wanted to only watch the video. 00:44:38.71\00:44:42.28 They didn't really wanna hear me preach. 00:44:42.31\00:44:44.48 And so I was like, 00:44:44.51\00:44:45.85 that's why I'm here, kind of like... 00:44:45.88\00:44:47.22 And we just had to, 00:44:47.25\00:44:48.65 but so I just ended up playing the video for them 00:44:48.68\00:44:51.05 'cause I just didn't want them to get angry or anything. 00:44:51.09\00:44:53.86 So I shortened my sermons, 00:44:53.89\00:44:55.82 make sure to get all the main parts 00:44:55.86\00:44:57.19 and then have time for them to watch extra video. 00:44:57.23\00:44:58.56 Sure. Okay. 00:44:58.59\00:44:59.93 And I was stressed because I was like, 00:44:59.96\00:45:01.56 they're not... 00:45:01.60\00:45:02.93 This video is not gonna last the whole time 00:45:02.96\00:45:04.33 they're gonna leave after the video. 00:45:04.37\00:45:05.87 Oh my. 00:45:05.90\00:45:07.24 But what happened was a group would come stay for, 00:45:07.27\00:45:10.71 it probably lasted about three meetings 00:45:10.74\00:45:12.34 since I showed so much video. 00:45:12.37\00:45:14.51 So that group would come, listen to those messages, 00:45:14.54\00:45:18.05 watch the video. 00:45:18.08\00:45:19.41 And then a new group would come. 00:45:19.45\00:45:20.78 Wow. 00:45:20.82\00:45:22.15 So even though I was thinking, 00:45:22.18\00:45:23.52 "Oh, they're not gonna stay." 00:45:23.55\00:45:24.89 I probably reached more people 00:45:24.92\00:45:26.25 having the video start over and over again 00:45:26.29\00:45:28.09 than I had just kept the same. 00:45:28.12\00:45:29.86 Absolutely. Praise, the Lord. 00:45:29.89\00:45:31.49 Did you sense that the people there in India were hungry, 00:45:31.53\00:45:34.23 that they were hungering... 00:45:34.26\00:45:35.60 Oh, yeah, definitely. 00:45:35.63\00:45:36.97 Maybe different than what we might see here in America? 00:45:37.00\00:45:39.30 That's amazing. Yeah. 00:45:39.33\00:45:40.67 So, Victoria, did you go on these trips with them? 00:45:40.70\00:45:42.64 No, this is my first year. Okay. 00:45:42.67\00:45:44.37 So I wasn't there last year with them. 00:45:44.41\00:45:45.84 All right. 00:45:45.87\00:45:47.21 You gotta be proud of these kids, right? 00:45:47.24\00:45:48.58 This is amazing. 00:45:48.61\00:45:49.94 I don't mean to call you kids, not like a little kid, 00:45:49.98\00:45:52.01 but still, I mean, you guys are growing into young adults. 00:45:52.05\00:45:54.32 It's the first time you've ever preached 00:45:54.35\00:45:56.25 an evangelistic series. 00:45:56.28\00:45:57.75 So Sunnydale talking about the campus ministries 00:45:57.79\00:46:00.72 and even off-campus ministries 00:46:00.76\00:46:02.39 is what we've been talking about. 00:46:02.42\00:46:04.16 This is amazing to see that 00:46:04.19\00:46:05.73 our young people are involved in the mission of our church, 00:46:05.76\00:46:08.36 a mission of taking the gospel to the world 00:46:08.40\00:46:10.97 and you gotta be proud of them. 00:46:11.00\00:46:12.43 Very proud of them. 00:46:12.47\00:46:13.80 And I think also just them, 00:46:13.84\00:46:16.00 I've seen that 00:46:16.04\00:46:17.44 when I can take time 00:46:17.47\00:46:18.97 to be more intentional with my ministry here 00:46:19.01\00:46:20.98 to reach out and help somebody, 00:46:21.01\00:46:22.34 that strengthens my own relationship 00:46:22.38\00:46:24.48 back with God. 00:46:24.51\00:46:25.85 On those days where my personal relationship with Him 00:46:25.88\00:46:27.95 may be in a slump 00:46:27.98\00:46:29.32 or it's not what we would describe 00:46:29.35\00:46:31.62 as on fire or anything, 00:46:31.65\00:46:33.12 reaching out and helping somebody 00:46:33.15\00:46:34.49 or getting involved in something 00:46:34.52\00:46:36.22 is almost like a kickstart 00:46:36.26\00:46:37.59 back into touching base with God 00:46:37.63\00:46:39.16 and relying on Him and using His strength. 00:46:39.19\00:46:40.93 And so I've seen that 00:46:40.96\00:46:42.30 whether or not they're aware of it, 00:46:42.33\00:46:43.67 I think I've seen them be able to grow 00:46:43.70\00:46:45.73 and how close they are with God, 00:46:45.77\00:46:47.60 because of how often 00:46:47.64\00:46:49.24 and how dedicated they've been to their ministry on campus. 00:46:49.27\00:46:53.11 And so not only are they reaching others, 00:46:53.14\00:46:55.34 but they're strengthening their own connection with Him 00:46:55.38\00:46:58.78 and relating back to Him. 00:46:58.81\00:47:00.15 Sure. 00:47:00.18\00:47:01.52 We have about four minutes or so 00:47:01.55\00:47:02.88 before we go to our closing break here, 00:47:02.92\00:47:06.05 but I just wanna talk maybe is, 00:47:06.09\00:47:08.02 are there other aspects of campus ministry 00:47:08.06\00:47:10.09 that perhaps we haven't talked about 00:47:10.13\00:47:11.76 that if a student coming or a parent coming 00:47:11.79\00:47:14.06 and they're seeking, 00:47:14.10\00:47:15.43 you know, they're considering sending their kids 00:47:15.46\00:47:17.63 to Sunnydale Adventist Academy and they wanna know how, 00:47:17.67\00:47:21.50 what does campus ministries 00:47:21.54\00:47:22.87 doing to minister directly to my child? 00:47:22.90\00:47:25.87 Yeah. 00:47:25.91\00:47:27.24 So and campus ministries works very closely 00:47:27.28\00:47:29.18 with the Bible classroom. 00:47:29.21\00:47:30.55 And so, whatever we may be learning 00:47:30.58\00:47:32.65 in the Bible classroom, 00:47:32.68\00:47:34.02 whatever the freshmen to senior curriculum 00:47:34.05\00:47:36.18 might be at that moment, 00:47:36.22\00:47:37.72 it's interesting to be able to have those conversations 00:47:37.75\00:47:40.36 with the kids where 00:47:40.39\00:47:41.92 whether maybe one week we may be learning about Job 00:47:41.96\00:47:44.53 and the things that he's gone through 00:47:44.56\00:47:45.89 and how he wasn't aware 00:47:45.93\00:47:47.53 of why he was going through those tricky times in life. 00:47:47.56\00:47:50.87 But it's interesting to see how the kids can connect it 00:47:50.90\00:47:53.13 back to what their fellow students 00:47:53.17\00:47:54.80 planned for the weekend. 00:47:54.84\00:47:56.40 And so it's almost like the seven days a week, 00:47:56.44\00:47:58.37 24 hour immersion 00:47:58.41\00:48:01.94 and connecting your real life 00:48:01.98\00:48:04.05 to what we find in Scripture 00:48:04.08\00:48:05.55 and connecting your worship experiencing 00:48:05.58\00:48:08.38 to what God has told us about Himself in the Bible. 00:48:08.42\00:48:11.55 And so just having that opportunity 00:48:11.59\00:48:14.16 to have the Bible classroom and campus ministries 00:48:14.19\00:48:17.39 all happening at the same time with the kids 00:48:17.43\00:48:20.60 and not really having a moment without 00:48:20.63\00:48:23.53 it is been powerful, not only to the kids, 00:48:23.57\00:48:26.07 but to myself as well, 00:48:26.10\00:48:27.44 to be able to see how God works in a way 00:48:27.47\00:48:29.27 where I could plan the best lesson, 00:48:29.30\00:48:31.27 or they could plan the best church service, 00:48:31.31\00:48:33.04 or it could be a terrible lesson 00:48:33.07\00:48:34.58 or a not so successful church service, 00:48:34.61\00:48:37.01 but what matters is that 00:48:37.05\00:48:38.68 because His spirit is part of it. 00:48:38.71\00:48:40.78 And because it's His spirit that we're following 00:48:40.82\00:48:43.39 those moments come because He's ordained it. 00:48:43.42\00:48:45.99 Those moments come because He set it up where the, 00:48:46.02\00:48:48.49 where the student can suddenly click in their mind. 00:48:48.52\00:48:50.93 Now I get it. 00:48:50.96\00:48:52.29 Now I see how everything we've been learning 00:48:52.33\00:48:53.86 is connected to me personally, 00:48:53.90\00:48:55.96 or all the songs we've been singing in church 00:48:56.00\00:48:58.00 is connected to what I'm going through. 00:48:58.03\00:49:00.07 And I truly believe that 00:49:00.10\00:49:02.10 we're just lucky to be used by Him, 00:49:02.14\00:49:04.14 to be part of that, 00:49:04.17\00:49:05.87 but it happens because He's present. 00:49:05.91\00:49:07.84 It happens because of His spirit 00:49:07.88\00:49:09.34 leading in our campus in that way. 00:49:09.38\00:49:11.01 Amen. That's awesome. Praise the Lord. 00:49:11.05\00:49:13.01 In fact, Ashlyn, I think we had some pictures. 00:49:13.05\00:49:14.58 Yeah. 00:49:14.62\00:49:15.95 We were supposed to show some pictures, 00:49:15.98\00:49:17.32 a couple of pictures. 00:49:17.35\00:49:18.69 Yeah, I have two pictures. 00:49:18.72\00:49:20.06 Let's pull those pictures up and tell us 00:49:20.09\00:49:21.42 what's happening in these pictures? 00:49:21.46\00:49:22.79 Okay. This is my little buddy. 00:49:22.82\00:49:25.79 I don't know his name. 00:49:25.83\00:49:27.16 They never told me his name... 00:49:27.20\00:49:28.53 Little buddy. All right. 00:49:28.56\00:49:29.90 He was my little best friend. 00:49:29.93\00:49:31.43 So that's that picture. 00:49:31.47\00:49:32.87 Amen.
