00:00:12.71\00:00:18.28 Mending broken people 00:00:18.31\00:00:23.39 I want to spend my life 00:00:23.42\00:00:29.19 Removing pain 00:00:29.22\00:00:34.13 Lord, let my word 00:00:34.20\00:00:39.60 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:39.63\00:00:44.61 I want to spend my life 00:00:44.64\00:00:50.28 Mending broken people 00:00:50.35\00:00:55.28 I want to spend my life 00:00:55.32\00:01:00.89 Mending broken people 00:01:00.96\00:01:04.76 Hello and welcome to 3ABN Today. 00:01:15.84\00:01:17.71 My name is John Dinzey. 00:01:17.74\00:01:19.07 And It's a pleasure for me to welcome you 00:01:19.11\00:01:20.58 on behalf of your 3ABN Family. 00:01:20.61\00:01:23.38 I would like to encourage you to join me 00:01:23.45\00:01:24.81 in the reading of the scriptures 00:01:24.85\00:01:26.18 in Proverbs 22:6, 00:01:26.21\00:01:28.95 "Train up a child in the way he should go, 00:01:28.98\00:01:32.22 and when he is old he will not depart from it." 00:01:32.25\00:01:36.83 Today we are focusing on Christian education, 00:01:36.86\00:01:39.56 and to continue this process of training our young people, 00:01:39.59\00:01:43.57 not only to serve in the world, 00:01:43.60\00:01:46.00 but also to let their light so shine before men 00:01:46.03\00:01:49.14 that they may see their good works 00:01:49.17\00:01:50.51 and glorify our Heavenly Father. 00:01:50.54\00:01:53.38 We have two academies that we want to focus on today, 00:01:53.41\00:01:57.65 the Indiana Academy and the Milo Academy. 00:01:57.68\00:02:01.62 Now considering these two schools, 00:02:01.65\00:02:03.99 these are Christian Seventh-day Adventist schools. 00:02:04.02\00:02:07.29 I went most of my life to secular schools. 00:02:07.36\00:02:10.63 And I can tell you, 00:02:10.66\00:02:11.99 it is a challenging environment. 00:02:12.03\00:02:14.90 I was offered drugs, 00:02:14.93\00:02:16.60 I was offered the privileged they called it to join a gang, 00:02:16.67\00:02:21.47 but these Christian academies offer something different. 00:02:21.50\00:02:24.91 Offer our young people an opportunity 00:02:24.94\00:02:27.84 not only to learn the academic subjects 00:02:27.88\00:02:30.25 which are necessary for school, 00:02:30.28\00:02:32.51 but also to learn more on Jesus Christ. 00:02:32.55\00:02:35.58 They lift up the standard of truth. 00:02:35.62\00:02:37.79 They help our young people to be prepared 00:02:37.82\00:02:40.76 to face life's challenges 00:02:40.79\00:02:42.86 because it is a challenging world we live in, 00:02:42.89\00:02:45.53 a challenging world indeed. 00:02:45.56\00:02:48.10 Today's difficult times demand 00:02:48.13\00:02:50.60 that our young people are offered 00:02:50.67\00:02:52.70 the best opportunity to train themselves 00:02:52.73\00:02:55.57 not only to face light, 00:02:55.60\00:02:57.67 because we know that Satan is as a roaring lion 00:02:57.71\00:03:00.88 seeking whom he may devour. 00:03:00.91\00:03:02.28 So we want to encourage you to consider the academy, 00:03:02.31\00:03:06.92 Indiana Academy, 00:03:06.95\00:03:08.28 Pastor John Lomacang 00:03:08.32\00:03:09.65 will be focusing on this academy. 00:03:09.68\00:03:11.49 He's the pastor 00:03:11.52\00:03:12.85 of the Thompsonville Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:03:12.89\00:03:14.96 and also you have seen him on many programs 00:03:14.99\00:03:17.23 here on 3ABN. 00:03:17.26\00:03:19.26 The second academy that we would like to focus on 00:03:19.29\00:03:21.23 is Milo Christian Seventh-day Adventist Academy. 00:03:21.26\00:03:24.80 Sister Jill Morikone, our Vice President and COO, 00:03:24.83\00:03:28.57 will be talking to our folks, our friends at the Milo Academy 00:03:28.60\00:03:33.98 so that you can learn about these academies. 00:03:34.01\00:03:36.78 Learn what they have to offer, 00:03:36.85\00:03:38.58 and then you will see 00:03:38.61\00:03:40.15 that there are other opportunities, 00:03:40.22\00:03:43.12 good options that you should consider 00:03:43.15\00:03:44.69 for your young people. 00:03:44.72\00:03:46.22 So now it is my pleasure 00:03:46.25\00:03:47.66 to hand it over to Pastor John Lomacang 00:03:47.69\00:03:50.43 as he starts us off with the Indiana Academy 00:03:50.46\00:03:53.16 and then we will hear Sister Jill Morikone 00:03:53.19\00:03:55.63 with the Milo Adventist Academy. 00:03:55.66\00:03:57.50 Hello, welcome to a very important segment 00:04:00.87\00:04:03.17 about Christian education, more specifically, 00:04:03.20\00:04:06.24 Seventh-day Adventist Christian education. 00:04:06.27\00:04:08.18 And today in our segment, 00:04:08.21\00:04:09.68 we're highlighting the Indiana Academy. 00:04:09.71\00:04:12.78 And I have with me today, Steve Baughman, 00:04:12.81\00:04:15.05 who is the principal 00:04:15.08\00:04:16.42 of the Indiana Adventist Academy. 00:04:16.45\00:04:18.32 Steve, are you there? 00:04:18.35\00:04:20.26 Hi. Hi, Pastor John. Thanks for having me. 00:04:20.29\00:04:22.76 Yes. Good to have you. Good to have you. 00:04:22.79\00:04:24.13 I tell you, 00:04:24.16\00:04:25.49 we're thinking about education 00:04:25.53\00:04:26.90 and what a challenging year this has been. 00:04:26.93\00:04:29.96 2020 is an amazing time for anyone to be alive. 00:04:30.00\00:04:34.17 Such an unpredictable time. 00:04:34.24\00:04:36.17 But before I go into talking about the challenges of, 00:04:36.20\00:04:39.31 and the blessings of Christian education, 00:04:39.34\00:04:41.84 more specifically at Adventist Academy there in Indiana, 00:04:41.88\00:04:45.31 just give our audience a little overview 00:04:45.35\00:04:47.75 of who you are, what you do, and where you're from? 00:04:47.78\00:04:51.42 Sure. So my name is Steve Baughman. 00:04:51.45\00:04:54.16 I actually was born in Michigan, 00:04:54.19\00:04:56.52 but I grew up here in Indiana. 00:04:56.56\00:04:57.96 I'm an alumni of Indiana Academy. 00:04:57.99\00:05:00.53 So in a sense, I have come full circle. 00:05:00.60\00:05:03.40 And I have, in fact, come back home here to IA. 00:05:03.47\00:05:07.34 I went to Southern Adventist University, 00:05:07.37\00:05:10.11 when I graduated there, 00:05:10.14\00:05:11.47 I just had a burden and a passion 00:05:11.51\00:05:12.84 to work in our boarding schools 00:05:12.87\00:05:14.21 because of the role boarding schools that played in my life. 00:05:14.24\00:05:17.18 And I taught for 10 years in Tennessee. 00:05:17.25\00:05:20.05 And now I am starting my eighth year 00:05:20.12\00:05:21.88 here at Indiana Academy as the principal. 00:05:21.92\00:05:24.85 And so just blessed, blessed to serve. 00:05:24.89\00:05:27.06 And it's a good work if you can get it. 00:05:27.09\00:05:29.86 Well, it's your time to give back. 00:05:29.89\00:05:32.06 And that's a good thing. 00:05:32.09\00:05:33.63 I've seen in the past, 00:05:33.70\00:05:35.03 some students have gone to academy 00:05:35.06\00:05:37.07 or gone to the universities 00:05:37.10\00:05:39.23 were grown up in similar situations, 00:05:39.27\00:05:41.70 but it's so good to know 00:05:41.74\00:05:43.20 that you can come back to a familiar territory. 00:05:43.24\00:05:46.27 Is it the same school that you were raised in 00:05:46.31\00:05:48.44 or the same school you went to? 00:05:48.48\00:05:50.85 You know, it was, um, it was kind of surreal. 00:05:50.88\00:05:53.72 I actually, when I walked in the door for my interview, 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.89 two of my former teachers were here to greet me. 00:05:56.92\00:05:59.15 And so that was a surreal experience. 00:05:59.19\00:06:01.56 It was a good experience. 00:06:01.59\00:06:02.99 And they, you know, I was nervous at first, okay, 00:06:03.02\00:06:05.16 how is this going to work, 00:06:05.19\00:06:06.53 but they welcomed me with a warm embrace. 00:06:06.56\00:06:08.50 And I knew we were going to do great things. 00:06:08.53\00:06:10.27 So it's been a lot of fun. And now I'm blessed. 00:06:10.30\00:06:12.17 I've been able to actually hire some of my former students. 00:06:12.20\00:06:14.94 And so this is, it's a joy to be in service for the Lord. 00:06:14.97\00:06:19.57 I think the phrase that fits here 00:06:19.61\00:06:21.04 is you went back to the future. 00:06:21.08\00:06:23.55 That's right. 00:06:23.58\00:06:24.91 That's right, very appropriable. 00:06:24.95\00:06:26.28 Wow. 00:06:26.31\00:06:27.65 Well, tell our audience a little bit 00:06:27.68\00:06:29.02 about Indiana Academy? 00:06:29.05\00:06:30.39 Because some people might say, 00:06:30.42\00:06:31.75 I know exactly where Indiana Academy is. 00:06:31.79\00:06:34.42 They may even be an alumni of Indiana Academy, 00:06:34.46\00:06:37.13 but some people might say, 00:06:37.16\00:06:38.53 I'd like to know more about Christian education, 00:06:38.56\00:06:41.00 specifically Adventist Christian education 00:06:41.03\00:06:43.97 at Indiana Academy. 00:06:44.00\00:06:45.33 Give us an overview before we dive into the... 00:06:45.37\00:06:47.67 What Indiana Academy does specifically? 00:06:47.70\00:06:49.74 Sure. 00:06:49.77\00:06:51.11 So we're located in Cicero, Indiana. 00:06:51.14\00:06:53.04 We're about 30 minutes, 00:06:53.07\00:06:54.41 35 minutes north northeast of Indianapolis. 00:06:54.44\00:06:57.55 We are a secondary boarding Academy. 00:06:57.58\00:07:00.65 So that means we service grades 9 through 12. 00:07:00.72\00:07:03.18 We're co-educational school. 00:07:03.22\00:07:04.75 So guys and girls, 00:07:04.79\00:07:06.45 each living in separate dorms attend. 00:07:06.49\00:07:09.29 We offer a fairly standard curriculum experience, 00:07:09.32\00:07:14.30 academic classes and things of that nature. 00:07:14.33\00:07:16.87 But then we incorporate a lot of our critical elements 00:07:16.90\00:07:20.84 that we think are important to a well-rounded 00:07:20.87\00:07:22.77 and balanced education. 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.64 And so we're here in rural Indiana, 00:07:24.67\00:07:27.38 but not too far out of town 00:07:27.41\00:07:28.74 that you can't get to where you need to get in time. 00:07:28.78\00:07:31.15 Wow. 00:07:31.18\00:07:32.51 I know the school is more than 100 years old. 00:07:32.55\00:07:35.45 What's the founding date of the Adventist Academy 00:07:35.48\00:07:37.72 there in Indiana? 00:07:37.75\00:07:39.09 Sure. 00:07:39.12\00:07:40.46 So Indiana Academy originally started 00:07:40.49\00:07:42.09 as a training institution, 00:07:42.12\00:07:44.26 as many of our institutions did in 1902, in Boggstown, Indiana, 00:07:44.33\00:07:50.50 and then shortly after that 00:07:50.57\00:07:51.90 relocated here to the lovely hills of Cicero. 00:07:51.93\00:07:54.70 Well, at the time, there were hills. 00:07:54.74\00:07:56.07 Since then, 00:07:56.10\00:07:57.44 the hills have kind of been eradicated 00:07:57.51\00:07:58.97 but our lovely hills of Cicero since 1902. 00:07:59.01\00:08:02.61 Wow. 00:08:02.64\00:08:03.98 And you have a student population 00:08:04.05\00:08:06.05 in the average of how many? 00:08:06.08\00:08:07.78 Yeah. 00:08:07.82\00:08:09.15 So we've been averaging over the last five to eight years 00:08:09.18\00:08:11.72 about 110 students. 00:08:11.75\00:08:13.19 And so that's been a nice number. 00:08:13.22\00:08:15.06 We're not a terribly large school, 00:08:15.09\00:08:17.03 where our girls' dorm is actually 00:08:17.06\00:08:19.46 at capacity this year. 00:08:19.49\00:08:21.06 And so we have room for a few more students, 00:08:21.10\00:08:23.47 but we're maybe built to really be 00:08:23.50\00:08:24.87 in that 130 to 150 range. 00:08:24.90\00:08:27.14 So we're not too far off of an ideal number. 00:08:27.17\00:08:29.67 Good, that gives you an opportunity 00:08:29.70\00:08:32.21 to be more of a one to one, 00:08:32.24\00:08:34.41 not an overwhelming environment, 00:08:34.44\00:08:35.98 because some schools are so large, 00:08:36.01\00:08:38.08 that sometimes students feel like 00:08:38.11\00:08:39.48 they get lost in the sauce. 00:08:39.51\00:08:41.52 And they don't know that. Right. 00:08:41.55\00:08:43.52 Yeah, so a very homey environment? 00:08:43.59\00:08:47.16 That's right, we do. 00:08:47.19\00:08:48.69 We have a nice relationship. 00:08:48.72\00:08:50.36 It's about a 10:1 staff to student ratio 00:08:50.43\00:08:52.59 or student to staff ratio. 00:08:52.63\00:08:54.30 So you get to actually know the students. 00:08:54.33\00:08:55.76 We form faculty families, 00:08:55.80\00:08:57.57 where our students come into our faculty homes, 00:08:57.60\00:09:00.04 from time to time throughout the year. 00:09:00.07\00:09:01.77 We really want to get to know our students, 00:09:01.80\00:09:03.20 know their names, 00:09:03.24\00:09:04.57 when we're passing them in the hallway. 00:09:04.61\00:09:05.97 Be able to stop and pray with them 00:09:06.01\00:09:07.74 and really foster those relationships. 00:09:07.78\00:09:09.78 I think it's those relationships 00:09:09.81\00:09:11.61 that what sets Seventh-day Adventist education apart, 00:09:11.65\00:09:15.28 and specifically something we focus on heavily 00:09:15.32\00:09:17.72 here at Indiana Academy. 00:09:17.75\00:09:19.09 Good. 00:09:19.12\00:09:20.46 Now, because of it being an Adventist academy, 00:09:20.49\00:09:23.46 do you include Bible in your curriculum? 00:09:23.53\00:09:25.99 And I'm just asking that question for our audience. 00:09:26.03\00:09:29.60 No, absolutely, absolutely. 00:09:29.63\00:09:31.53 We absolutely have a religious program. 00:09:31.57\00:09:34.40 We incorporate Bible into each of our core years, 00:09:34.44\00:09:38.14 you know, 9th grade, 10th grade, 11th and so on 00:09:38.17\00:09:41.04 each year has a Bible class. 00:09:41.08\00:09:42.74 And then beyond that, 00:09:42.78\00:09:44.15 we have regular worship experiences, 00:09:44.18\00:09:45.61 worship service, 00:09:45.65\00:09:47.02 really wanting to focus on equipping our students 00:09:47.05\00:09:49.55 with skills for personal evangelism. 00:09:49.58\00:09:51.69 So not only can they grow their faith, 00:09:51.72\00:09:53.39 but then they can go and share that faith. 00:09:53.46\00:09:55.39 And that call to action 00:09:55.42\00:09:57.23 that I think our Adventist schools 00:09:57.26\00:09:58.76 are called to be something special about. 00:09:58.79\00:10:02.93 So if you define the mission of your academy, 00:10:02.96\00:10:05.37 what would it be? 00:10:05.40\00:10:07.24 So our mission here is to educate the whole student 00:10:07.27\00:10:10.41 to know and serve God in their community. 00:10:10.44\00:10:12.77 We want them to know God, 00:10:12.81\00:10:14.21 develop that relationship 00:10:14.28\00:10:15.61 that can save their lives for eternity. 00:10:15.64\00:10:17.65 But then to use that knowledge to serve, 00:10:17.68\00:10:20.22 and to go out and be missionaries, wherever, 00:10:20.25\00:10:22.98 wherever their paths may lead, 00:10:23.02\00:10:24.55 once they, once I shake their hand in May 00:10:24.59\00:10:27.06 and grant them a diploma. 00:10:27.09\00:10:28.59 We want them to realize that they can be missionaries 00:10:28.62\00:10:30.86 wherever they're called to serve. 00:10:30.93\00:10:32.96 Have you as a... 00:10:32.99\00:10:34.33 How long have you been there as the principal? 00:10:34.36\00:10:36.16 You may have mentioned this? 00:10:36.20\00:10:37.80 Yeah, no, this is the start of my eighth year, 00:10:37.83\00:10:39.73 so seven full years, and this is number eight. 00:10:39.77\00:10:41.97 Okay. 00:10:42.00\00:10:43.34 Wow, that's a wonderful thing to be able to do. 00:10:43.41\00:10:45.47 You know, I would think, 00:10:45.51\00:10:46.88 as you talked about the surreal experience 00:10:46.91\00:10:49.28 of coming into the building 00:10:49.31\00:10:50.65 where you actually was a student, 00:10:50.68\00:10:52.51 and then seeing some of your former teachers. 00:10:52.55\00:10:55.45 How long, I'm just kind of asking 00:10:55.48\00:10:57.09 a completely different question. 00:10:57.12\00:10:58.59 How long did it take for you 00:10:58.62\00:11:00.26 to flip out of the student mode 00:11:00.29\00:11:02.29 into the teacher's mode when you're exiting a class? 00:11:02.32\00:11:05.16 Because, you know, you're kind of going back, 00:11:05.19\00:11:07.00 am I going to class 00:11:07.03\00:11:08.36 or am I going to teach the next class? 00:11:08.40\00:11:10.17 Well, that's accurate, you know, part of it, 00:11:10.20\00:11:12.70 it was actually a little bit of a call to action, 00:11:12.73\00:11:14.80 because I walked into our science lab 00:11:14.84\00:11:16.64 when I first came back, and I said, 00:11:16.71\00:11:18.04 "Friends, this can't look the exact same as 00:11:18.07\00:11:19.91 when I graduated x years ago." 00:11:19.94\00:11:22.08 And so we got to work renovating some things. 00:11:22.11\00:11:24.15 We felt like it was time to maybe do some updates 00:11:24.18\00:11:26.82 and to do some proper renovations 00:11:26.85\00:11:28.75 to some of our programs. 00:11:28.78\00:11:30.12 You know, I shouldn't find my name 00:11:30.19\00:11:31.52 carved in the same desk I sat in as a sophomore. 00:11:31.55\00:11:34.09 And so we had to make a few adjustments. 00:11:34.16\00:11:38.06 But thankfully, 00:11:38.09\00:11:39.43 I've been blessed with a lot of opportunities 00:11:39.46\00:11:41.83 to serve on some different committees 00:11:41.86\00:11:43.37 while I was a teacher for 10 years in Tennessee. 00:11:43.40\00:11:45.73 And so I think that helped me transition out of that mode of, 00:11:45.77\00:11:49.00 okay, I'm so green 00:11:49.04\00:11:50.41 that I don't know what I'm doing. 00:11:50.44\00:11:52.57 But we hit the ground running pretty quickly, 00:11:52.61\00:11:56.14 I felt the call to come into administration, 00:11:56.18\00:11:58.88 because of what I felt like 00:11:58.91\00:12:00.25 our Seventh-day Adventist schools could strive to be, 00:12:00.32\00:12:02.75 and I felt like this school was leaning in that direction 00:12:02.78\00:12:06.76 already with some of the programs 00:12:06.79\00:12:08.39 that my predecessor had hoped to establish. 00:12:08.42\00:12:10.99 And so I was excited to come here 00:12:11.03\00:12:12.89 and really get to work about incorporating elements 00:12:12.93\00:12:15.86 of service into our school. 00:12:15.90\00:12:17.37 That is really nice. I like how you said that. 00:12:17.40\00:12:20.57 There shouldn't be the same desk 00:12:20.64\00:12:22.10 that I carved my name in. 00:12:22.14\00:12:24.31 And that's a, that is a call to action. 00:12:24.34\00:12:26.21 I like that. 00:12:26.24\00:12:27.94 You know, and sometimes we get mad at these kids, 00:12:27.98\00:12:30.68 you know, for some of their behaviors 00:12:30.75\00:12:32.28 and some of their decisions 00:12:32.31\00:12:33.65 and sometimes we forget that 00:12:33.72\00:12:35.05 maybe we used to be kids too. 00:12:35.08\00:12:36.42 And so that helps build that relationship 00:12:36.45\00:12:38.09 to stay humble and recognize, 00:12:38.12\00:12:39.89 I probably wasn't always 00:12:39.92\00:12:41.26 on the right side of the principal's desk 00:12:41.29\00:12:43.32 when I was a student here myself. 00:12:43.36\00:12:45.56 Yeah, you know, somebody once said, 00:12:45.59\00:12:47.13 "What kind of Christian are you?" 00:12:47.20\00:12:49.33 And somebody once said, "A pantheist." 00:12:49.36\00:12:51.27 And they said, "What is that?" 00:12:51.30\00:12:52.63 He said, "All pans out on in the end." 00:12:52.67\00:12:55.77 That's good to see where you started, 00:12:55.80\00:12:57.94 and where you are now making an impact. 00:12:57.97\00:13:00.08 You know, you brought a video, 00:13:00.11\00:13:01.44 we have a video we'd like to show 00:13:01.48\00:13:02.91 about the Indiana Adventist Academy. 00:13:02.94\00:13:05.51 And just tell us kind of 00:13:05.55\00:13:06.92 what we're going to see in this role? 00:13:06.95\00:13:08.32 Sure. 00:13:08.35\00:13:09.68 So this is um, some of them are, 00:13:09.72\00:13:11.95 they're still shots of some of the programs 00:13:11.99\00:13:14.62 and some of the areas of emphasis here on our campus. 00:13:14.66\00:13:17.26 We are really embracing education 00:13:17.33\00:13:21.66 that equips students to take action. 00:13:21.70\00:13:23.77 And so you'll see pictures of our students 00:13:23.80\00:13:25.50 serving others in different capacities 00:13:25.53\00:13:27.54 as we serve them. 00:13:27.57\00:13:28.90 And it's just an exciting, 00:13:28.94\00:13:30.74 hopefully a brief snapshot 00:13:30.81\00:13:32.91 of some of the experience here at IA, 00:13:32.94\00:13:34.48 and the music that is being sung 00:13:34.51\00:13:36.38 is by our own select choir and so I was excited. 00:13:36.41\00:13:38.78 It was something together 00:13:38.81\00:13:40.15 during our Coronavirus shut down last school year. 00:13:40.22\00:13:42.92 Okay, well, let's go to that role right now 00:13:42.95\00:13:45.02 about Indiana Adventist Academy. 00:13:45.05\00:13:47.09 Be thou my vision 00:14:01.87\00:14:05.74 O Lord of my heart 00:14:05.77\00:14:11.08 Naught be all else to me 00:14:11.11\00:14:16.05 Save that thou art 00:14:16.08\00:14:20.86 Thou my best thought 00:14:20.89\00:14:24.86 By day or by night 00:14:24.89\00:14:27.86 Waking or sleeping 00:14:32.83\00:14:36.81 Thy presence my light 00:14:36.84\00:14:40.58 Thou my light 00:14:46.38\00:14:50.39 Be Thou my wisdom 00:14:50.42\00:14:54.29 And thou my true word 00:14:54.32\00:14:59.69 I ever with thee 00:14:59.73\00:15:03.37 And Thou with me, 00:15:03.40\00:15:06.60 Lord Thou my great Father 00:15:06.63\00:15:13.48 And I, Thy true son 00:15:13.51\00:15:17.48 Thou in me dwelling 00:15:21.35\00:15:24.89 And I with Thee one 00:15:24.92\00:15:29.76 Be thou my shield And my sword 00:15:40.67\00:15:45.27 For the fight Be Thou my honor 00:15:45.31\00:15:51.88 And be Thou my light 00:15:51.91\00:15:56.79 Thou my soul's shelter 00:15:56.82\00:16:00.86 And Thou my high tower 00:16:00.89\00:16:04.89 Raise me toward heaven 00:16:09.70\00:16:13.57 O Power of my Lord 00:16:13.64\00:16:18.14 Wow! 00:16:24.51\00:16:25.85 I hope you were blessed by that video. 00:16:25.88\00:16:27.32 And before I go back to our principal, 00:16:27.35\00:16:29.95 maybe you might be thinking 00:16:29.98\00:16:31.32 about where you'd like your son or daughter 00:16:31.35\00:16:33.25 to go to school. 00:16:33.29\00:16:34.62 I'd like to recommend 00:16:34.66\00:16:35.99 the Indiana Adventist Seventh-day Adventist Academy. 00:16:36.02\00:16:38.89 And, Steve, are you there? 00:16:38.93\00:16:41.33 I am here, John. Thank you so much. 00:16:41.36\00:16:43.47 That was very inspiring. I like that multiple screen. 00:16:43.50\00:16:47.64 Always wonder how they do that. 00:16:47.67\00:16:49.07 I've seen that a few times that, that was beautiful. 00:16:49.10\00:16:51.64 Now are those present students 00:16:51.67\00:16:53.01 or some of those are prior students? 00:16:53.04\00:16:55.18 Some of those, some of those photos are over the last year 00:16:55.21\00:16:58.08 or two but fairly, fairly recently. 00:16:58.11\00:17:00.72 But now the students who were singing 00:17:00.75\00:17:02.18 that was our select choir 00:17:02.22\00:17:03.69 at the end of the school year last year 00:17:03.72\00:17:05.52 when we were shut down due to the Coronavirus. 00:17:05.55\00:17:08.72 We continued with remote instruction. 00:17:08.76\00:17:11.06 And so are we, 00:17:11.09\00:17:12.43 one of the big struggles was what do you do 00:17:12.46\00:17:14.10 with your music classes? 00:17:14.13\00:17:15.46 We didn't want to just outright cancel them 00:17:15.50\00:17:17.07 and so our music director Philip Byrd, 00:17:17.10\00:17:19.77 who is an incredibly talented individual 00:17:19.80\00:17:21.60 and musician himself, 00:17:21.64\00:17:23.24 he worked with 00:17:23.27\00:17:24.94 some of the different software programs 00:17:24.97\00:17:26.41 to make sure that they could continue to rehearse, 00:17:26.44\00:17:28.81 to practice and eventually put together that piece 00:17:28.84\00:17:32.11 kind of as a final end of year performance. 00:17:32.15\00:17:35.42 Wow. 00:17:35.45\00:17:36.79 Well, thank you for that, that was wonderful. 00:17:36.82\00:17:38.22 Tell us about some of your community service projects, 00:17:38.25\00:17:41.42 because you talked about the community service oriented 00:17:41.46\00:17:43.76 aspects of the educational program there? 00:17:43.83\00:17:46.39 That's right. 00:17:46.43\00:17:47.76 We have a program, it's been around for, 00:17:47.80\00:17:49.73 I believe it's its 10th year or 11th year now. 00:17:49.76\00:17:52.23 And it's called Project 58. 00:17:52.27\00:17:53.64 It's based on the principles of Isaiah 58, 00:17:53.67\00:17:56.91 you know, 00:17:56.94\00:17:58.27 the council to take care of others to serve others, 00:17:58.31\00:18:00.88 and then your light might shine. 00:18:00.91\00:18:02.54 And we go out once a month, our entire student body, 00:18:02.58\00:18:06.18 our full faculty and staff and we serve in different, 00:18:06.21\00:18:09.38 we call them service pods 00:18:09.42\00:18:10.99 where we go and we go serve in different capacities. 00:18:11.02\00:18:14.82 So our students will go work at a food bank, 00:18:14.86\00:18:16.93 or we have students who go and work with the Christmas 00:18:16.96\00:18:19.29 Behind Bars Ministry located in Northern Indiana. 00:18:19.33\00:18:22.63 We work at some of the elementary schools. 00:18:22.66\00:18:25.60 We have a group of students 00:18:25.63\00:18:26.97 who bake cookies 00:18:27.04\00:18:28.37 and deliver them to local community businesses. 00:18:28.40\00:18:30.34 And it's a good time when, you know, 00:18:30.41\00:18:33.48 some of the students will go to a business 00:18:33.51\00:18:35.64 and the business will start to recognize them 00:18:35.68\00:18:38.21 because the same students will serve each month. 00:18:38.25\00:18:40.22 And they'll say, 00:18:40.25\00:18:41.58 "Oh, finally, 00:18:41.62\00:18:42.95 we've been waiting for to see you guys again." 00:18:42.98\00:18:44.72 And it's just a lot of fun to be able to go out 00:18:44.75\00:18:48.46 and build relationships with our community. 00:18:48.49\00:18:50.56 You know, one of my... 00:18:50.63\00:18:52.36 One of my calls to action 00:18:52.39\00:18:54.10 has always been if our school didn't open, 00:18:54.13\00:18:56.80 would anybody outside of our circle? 00:18:56.87\00:18:58.83 No. Hmm. 00:18:58.87\00:19:00.24 And that's, 00:19:00.27\00:19:01.60 that's always kind of been a sense of humbling recognition 00:19:01.64\00:19:05.11 that we have a role to play, not just to stay open, 00:19:05.14\00:19:08.04 you know, if we aren't ministering to our community, 00:19:08.08\00:19:09.94 if we aren't ministering to our neighbors, 00:19:09.98\00:19:11.58 if we aren't developing those relationships, 00:19:11.61\00:19:14.48 what really are we doing? 00:19:14.52\00:19:15.95 And so we want to equip our students 00:19:15.98\00:19:17.69 and enable them to be a part of that kind of service 00:19:17.72\00:19:20.49 while they are still students here. 00:19:20.56\00:19:22.42 Not waiting for some, some idea of the real world, 00:19:22.46\00:19:26.23 the real world is now 00:19:26.26\00:19:27.60 and these kids are experiencing it. 00:19:27.63\00:19:29.26 That's why I'm glad you have that attitude as a principal 00:19:29.30\00:19:31.47 because a lot of times we say 00:19:31.50\00:19:33.64 that our young people are the church of tomorrow. 00:19:33.67\00:19:36.47 But if we make them the church of today, 00:19:36.50\00:19:38.44 then they'll be ready for tomorrow. 00:19:38.47\00:19:40.18 Thank you for that dedication. 00:19:40.21\00:19:41.71 Talk about your work programs there 00:19:41.74\00:19:43.18 because I know you talked about the community aspect. 00:19:43.21\00:19:45.41 What about the work programs 00:19:45.45\00:19:46.82 that students could get involved in maybe for credit, 00:19:46.85\00:19:49.55 or some kind of benefit to their education? 00:19:49.58\00:19:52.02 No, that's right. 00:19:52.05\00:19:53.39 And I think it's important 00:19:53.46\00:19:54.79 our students are developing work ethics now. 00:19:54.82\00:19:56.93 And we want to equip them 00:19:56.96\00:19:58.33 with some of those skills 00:19:58.36\00:19:59.69 and so nearly 100% of our student body 00:19:59.73\00:20:02.56 is actively employed 00:20:02.60\00:20:04.53 and primarily employed by us here at the academy, 00:20:04.57\00:20:07.44 but in different roles and different avenues. 00:20:07.47\00:20:09.17 You know, you have your, 00:20:09.20\00:20:10.54 your standard maybe teacher's assistants 00:20:10.61\00:20:12.51 or janitorial type thing. 00:20:12.54\00:20:13.88 But we have a couple of exciting programs. 00:20:13.91\00:20:16.21 We have an Indiana assembly 00:20:16.24\00:20:18.31 and packaging program here 00:20:18.35\00:20:19.95 where we make and assemble things on contract. 00:20:20.02\00:20:22.28 And our students do that as part of their daily program. 00:20:22.32\00:20:26.42 But then also here recently, 00:20:26.45\00:20:27.89 Indiana Academy has taken over the managerial role 00:20:27.92\00:20:31.49 of the Adventist book center 00:20:31.53\00:20:33.16 that was previously operated by the Michigan Conference. 00:20:33.19\00:20:37.80 They were making some changes 00:20:37.83\00:20:39.40 there in the Michigan Conference 00:20:39.43\00:20:40.84 related to the ABC, 00:20:40.87\00:20:42.50 and so we have a physical building 00:20:42.54\00:20:44.91 located here on our campus. 00:20:44.94\00:20:46.88 And it kind of made sense to incorporate that 00:20:46.91\00:20:49.31 into Indiana Academy's mission as well. 00:20:49.34\00:20:51.78 And so that's that just started here recently 00:20:51.81\00:20:54.68 but we're hoping to grow that 00:20:54.72\00:20:56.05 to be a part and a component of our program 00:20:56.08\00:20:58.99 here with students working there at the ABC, 00:20:59.02\00:21:01.89 but also maybe using it 00:21:01.92\00:21:03.26 as a community outreach center as well. 00:21:03.29\00:21:05.09 Okay. 00:21:05.13\00:21:06.46 Also part of that 00:21:06.49\00:21:07.83 there's a biology water cleaning project, 00:21:07.86\00:21:09.63 talk about that? 00:21:09.66\00:21:11.00 Sure. 00:21:11.03\00:21:12.37 So this is something that's kind of exciting. 00:21:12.40\00:21:14.24 It's that idea of putting our education into practice. 00:21:14.27\00:21:18.77 And so when we go and we rake a lady's yard, 00:21:18.81\00:21:21.01 you know, which is a fantastic opportunity to minister 00:21:21.04\00:21:23.58 and to serve that lady that's, um, 00:21:23.65\00:21:25.15 that's kind of a pure sense of community service. 00:21:25.18\00:21:28.38 We want to see also though, 00:21:28.42\00:21:29.75 what we're doing in the classroom 00:21:29.78\00:21:31.12 being incorporated into acts of service. 00:21:31.15\00:21:34.06 And so our biology teacher, Mr. Art Miller, 00:21:34.09\00:21:36.86 who is fantastic. 00:21:36.93\00:21:38.26 He has worked with the local city here, 00:21:38.29\00:21:41.06 and their clean water project, 00:21:41.10\00:21:42.96 where our students as a part of their biology class 00:21:43.00\00:21:45.50 will go and take water samples from the creek 00:21:45.53\00:21:48.54 that runs adjacent to our property here. 00:21:48.57\00:21:51.17 And then they'll analyze that as a part of their class, 00:21:51.21\00:21:54.71 but then the data that they're finding, 00:21:54.74\00:21:56.38 and normally in a traditional school environment, 00:21:56.41\00:21:58.65 maybe you just make a PowerPoint, 00:21:58.68\00:22:00.12 you present to your classmates. 00:22:00.15\00:22:01.92 They're actually taking that data 00:22:01.95\00:22:03.32 and uploading it to a state database 00:22:03.39\00:22:05.75 about the water cleanliness in the state of Indiana. 00:22:05.79\00:22:08.59 So what they are doing is applying their learning, 00:22:08.62\00:22:12.03 you know, biology, 00:22:12.06\00:22:13.53 but actually using it in a way 00:22:13.60\00:22:15.03 that the greater state of Indiana can benefit from. 00:22:15.06\00:22:17.90 And that's really what we want to see happening 00:22:17.93\00:22:20.24 through our entire curriculum 00:22:20.27\00:22:22.20 is elements of intentional service, 00:22:22.24\00:22:25.04 that is then being able to use the practical side 00:22:25.07\00:22:29.71 of the content they're being exposed to. 00:22:29.74\00:22:31.41 Wow. 00:22:31.45\00:22:32.78 And I know that we have this environment 00:22:32.81\00:22:34.15 where touch and social distancing is all, 00:22:34.22\00:22:37.89 you know, 00:22:37.92\00:22:39.25 discombobulated wearing masks 00:22:39.29\00:22:41.06 and how many feet apart and when you cough, 00:22:41.09\00:22:43.83 turn your head and wash your hands for 20 seconds. 00:22:43.86\00:22:46.56 How is the academy 00:22:46.59\00:22:48.26 fitting into this responding COVID environment? 00:22:48.30\00:22:51.40 Sure. 00:22:51.43\00:22:52.77 So it definitely has been, 00:22:52.80\00:22:54.14 it's been a bit of an experience 00:22:54.17\00:22:55.74 to go through as everybody's had to adjust so did we. 00:22:55.77\00:22:58.51 And we shut down last year 00:22:58.54\00:23:00.38 when the governor ordered 00:23:00.41\00:23:01.74 that schools would go to remote learning 00:23:01.78\00:23:03.18 and then we were prayerfully making plans 00:23:03.21\00:23:04.78 to be able to reopen this school year 00:23:04.81\00:23:07.12 and thankfully, that has happened, 00:23:07.15\00:23:09.62 we were able to reopen, reopen our dorms. 00:23:09.65\00:23:12.92 We've been investing in a lot of, 00:23:12.95\00:23:14.52 a lot of hand sanitizer. 00:23:14.56\00:23:16.06 I could probably fill in a big swimming pool 00:23:16.09\00:23:17.96 with hand sanitizer. 00:23:17.99\00:23:19.73 But we still been able to maintain the relationships 00:23:19.76\00:23:24.33 and we're having to reprogram some of our regular programs 00:23:24.37\00:23:27.44 where maybe we take students out on a Saturday night. 00:23:27.47\00:23:30.97 You know, maybe we'd go ice skating 00:23:31.01\00:23:32.61 or something like that. 00:23:32.64\00:23:33.98 We're having to reevaluate each of those programs 00:23:34.01\00:23:36.18 to make sure that what we do is safe. 00:23:36.21\00:23:38.65 But we're able to kind of even more foster 00:23:38.68\00:23:41.65 that small family relationship. 00:23:41.68\00:23:44.52 We've been doing bonfires on campus, 00:23:44.55\00:23:46.86 we've been spending a lot of time outdoors, 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.06 just getting fresh air 00:23:49.09\00:23:50.43 and being reasonably socially distance 00:23:50.46\00:23:53.70 away from our neighbors. 00:23:53.73\00:23:55.06 But it's been a good thing. 00:23:55.10\00:23:57.73 How are you social distancing in your classrooms 00:23:57.77\00:24:00.54 because I know that listening to the news 00:24:00.57\00:24:02.80 that's been a tremendous concern 00:24:02.84\00:24:04.97 for parents all around our nation, 00:24:05.01\00:24:06.51 in some cases in different countries. 00:24:06.54\00:24:09.38 And I saw one example where was on the news recently, 00:24:09.41\00:24:12.95 in one classroom, they did not move the desks, 00:24:12.98\00:24:15.88 but they built almost like a glass, 00:24:15.92\00:24:17.99 Plexiglas cage 00:24:18.02\00:24:19.79 around the top of every desk so the students, 00:24:19.82\00:24:21.99 they were not far apart. 00:24:22.02\00:24:23.36 But, man, I tell you, they were really sequestered. 00:24:23.43\00:24:25.76 How is that happening in your school? 00:24:25.79\00:24:27.40 Sure. 00:24:27.43\00:24:28.76 So we did do the Plexiglas dividers in our cafeteria. 00:24:28.80\00:24:31.80 We felt like where you're eating 00:24:31.83\00:24:34.04 and you can't wear a mask, 00:24:34.07\00:24:35.40 we felt like that, 00:24:35.44\00:24:36.81 that potential risk might be a little stronger in that area. 00:24:36.84\00:24:39.51 So we did used the... 00:24:39.54\00:24:40.88 We built a bunch of Plexiglas dividers 00:24:40.91\00:24:42.84 there in our cafeteria 00:24:42.88\00:24:44.25 and spread the chairs out kind of minimize 00:24:44.28\00:24:45.85 some of the seating at each table. 00:24:45.88\00:24:47.65 In the classrooms, 00:24:47.68\00:24:49.02 we spread the desks as much as possible 00:24:49.05\00:24:50.69 and we are having our students wear masks 00:24:50.72\00:24:52.55 while they're in the classrooms. 00:24:52.59\00:24:54.16 And if we can kind of ensure that, 00:24:54.19\00:24:56.93 that adequate social distancing, 00:24:56.96\00:24:58.89 our students and our faculty and staff 00:24:58.93\00:25:01.03 are all wearing their masks. 00:25:01.06\00:25:02.40 We look forward to the day when that's not a thing. 00:25:02.43\00:25:04.53 But in the meantime, 00:25:04.57\00:25:05.90 we'd rather be wearing our masks 00:25:05.93\00:25:07.97 and be open 00:25:08.00\00:25:09.34 than be mask-less and having to do remote education. 00:25:09.37\00:25:12.81 You know, I saw one of the principals 00:25:12.84\00:25:15.11 of one of our local schools, 00:25:15.14\00:25:16.75 you know, they have a sports program, 00:25:16.78\00:25:19.18 kids play basketball casually, just in an intramural way. 00:25:19.21\00:25:23.79 And I was amazed they were running up and down, 00:25:23.82\00:25:26.15 running up and down the court with masks on. 00:25:26.19\00:25:28.29 I thought, man, how is that? 00:25:28.32\00:25:29.89 How are you assimilating that because I know that, 00:25:29.92\00:25:32.59 you know, the young guys, 00:25:32.63\00:25:34.00 they want to play pickleball and maybe volleyball. 00:25:34.03\00:25:36.90 How you doing that in the COVID environment? 00:25:36.97\00:25:39.63 So we are, we are allowing, 00:25:39.67\00:25:41.97 we do have an intramural program, 00:25:42.00\00:25:43.71 kind of like what you're explaining 00:25:43.74\00:25:45.07 where it's maybe a little more casual, 00:25:45.11\00:25:46.44 but it's still active education. 00:25:46.47\00:25:49.01 And we're following our state guidelines, 00:25:49.04\00:25:50.75 which those state guidelines have given some exemptions 00:25:50.78\00:25:53.72 for maybe you don't need to wear a mask 00:25:53.75\00:25:55.62 if you're participating in physical activity, 00:25:55.65\00:25:57.92 as long as you may be taking 00:25:57.95\00:25:59.39 certain personal safety measures, 00:25:59.42\00:26:01.09 you're washing your hands, 00:26:01.12\00:26:02.46 you're doing this type of thing before you begin. 00:26:02.49\00:26:04.66 And so we are still, 00:26:04.69\00:26:06.19 we are still having those moments 00:26:06.23\00:26:07.83 where they're teenagers, 00:26:07.86\00:26:09.43 where teenagers can be teenagers 00:26:09.46\00:26:12.80 and then just doing our best 00:26:12.83\00:26:14.67 to still stress those personal sanitation practices, 00:26:14.70\00:26:18.04 washing your hands, using hand sanitizer, 00:26:18.07\00:26:21.24 trying to avoid touching your face, 00:26:21.28\00:26:22.74 those types of things. 00:26:22.78\00:26:24.15 Now, what about the students that said, 00:26:24.18\00:26:25.75 I want to be a student of the Indiana Academy, 00:26:25.78\00:26:29.18 but I want to do it on distance learning, 00:26:29.22\00:26:30.92 I'm not ready mentally to come into the classroom. 00:26:30.99\00:26:33.46 Have you had to deal with that at all? 00:26:33.49\00:26:35.72 You know, 00:26:35.76\00:26:37.13 I was pleasantly surprised this year, 00:26:37.16\00:26:38.86 our enrollment was actually up over last year. 00:26:38.89\00:26:41.93 And we had a number of students applying 00:26:41.96\00:26:44.17 even before we necessarily had rolled out 00:26:44.20\00:26:45.77 our COVID protocols. 00:26:45.80\00:26:47.14 And so there was a, 00:26:47.17\00:26:48.50 there is a desire and a passion to be in the boarding setting. 00:26:48.54\00:26:51.27 And I think that comes from 00:26:51.31\00:26:52.71 knowing that we have a smaller school, 00:26:52.74\00:26:54.41 I think that maybe there's a sense of safety, 00:26:54.44\00:26:57.55 relative sense of safety 00:26:57.58\00:26:58.91 and we're hoping that we continue to remain 00:26:58.95\00:27:00.98 a safe and open environment here. 00:27:01.02\00:27:03.18 But we haven't offered synchronous remote instruction. 00:27:03.22\00:27:07.59 But we are ready to go to remote learning 00:27:07.66\00:27:10.06 if for the sake of safety of our students. 00:27:10.13\00:27:13.50 Or if the governor were to shift gears on education, 00:27:13.53\00:27:16.10 we'd be ready to switch again. 00:27:16.13\00:27:18.20 But we much prefer the in campus, 00:27:18.23\00:27:21.07 on campus in person experience. 00:27:21.10\00:27:23.07 Okay. 00:27:23.10\00:27:24.44 If a student is watching this program 00:27:24.47\00:27:25.91 that's maybe thinking about an academy for the future. 00:27:25.94\00:27:29.04 What would you say to that young man 00:27:29.08\00:27:30.45 or that young lady? 00:27:30.48\00:27:32.15 I would say give it to God. 00:27:32.18\00:27:33.72 There are, there... It's an amazing thing. 00:27:33.75\00:27:36.92 Seventh-day Adventist education is such a tremendous blessing. 00:27:36.99\00:27:40.09 And there are so many quality schools out there. 00:27:40.16\00:27:42.72 If you were to look at our schools website, 00:27:42.76\00:27:44.89 and if you felt like 00:27:44.93\00:27:46.26 Indiana Academy was the place for you, 00:27:46.29\00:27:47.73 and you gave that to God 00:27:47.76\00:27:49.10 and you felt that that was where He was leading, 00:27:49.13\00:27:51.13 I want you to be here. 00:27:51.17\00:27:52.53 If you give it to God 00:27:52.57\00:27:53.94 and He makes you feel like 00:27:53.97\00:27:55.30 maybe you should be at 00:27:55.34\00:27:56.67 one of our other sister institutions 00:27:56.71\00:27:58.04 or at another Adventist school. 00:27:58.07\00:27:59.41 I want you to be there. 00:27:59.44\00:28:00.78 If God's calling you to Nineveh, 00:28:00.81\00:28:02.64 I want you to be in Nineveh. 00:28:02.68\00:28:04.05 I don't want to be any, 00:28:04.08\00:28:05.41 I don't want to be anybody's Tarshish 00:28:05.45\00:28:06.78 but I tell you, 00:28:06.82\00:28:08.48 God's doing a good thing here on campus. 00:28:08.52\00:28:10.29 It's a joy to be a part of it. 00:28:10.32\00:28:12.52 And God's doing a lot of powerful things 00:28:12.55\00:28:14.52 across this division 00:28:14.56\00:28:16.86 and Seventh-day Adventist schools 00:28:16.93\00:28:18.36 and I think now more than ever, 00:28:18.39\00:28:20.30 now is a time when our students need to hear 00:28:20.33\00:28:23.16 the life changing and world changing message 00:28:23.20\00:28:26.23 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and it's... 00:28:26.27\00:28:29.00 I'm overwhelmed, 00:28:29.04\00:28:30.81 overwhelmingly blessed to be able to be a part of it 00:28:30.84\00:28:33.14 here in Cicero at Indiana Academy. 00:28:33.17\00:28:35.54 Well, thank you, Steve Baughman, 00:28:35.58\00:28:37.15 the principal of the Indiana Adventist Academy. 00:28:37.18\00:28:40.02 We thank you so much 00:28:40.05\00:28:41.38 for taking the time to join us today. 00:28:41.42\00:28:43.15 And if you'd like to find out more about the academy, 00:28:43.18\00:28:44.99 go to iasda.org. 00:28:45.02\00:28:48.42 I'm John Lomacang for 3ABN, 00:28:48.46\00:28:50.46 and this is the blessing 00:28:50.53\00:28:52.26 of what Christian education 00:28:52.29\00:28:54.00 can do in your life and for your children. 00:28:54.03\00:28:56.67 Welcome to Milo Adventist Academy, 00:28:59.87\00:29:02.04 a Christian private boarding high school 00:29:02.07\00:29:03.84 located in Southern Oregon. 00:29:03.91\00:29:06.14 The entrance to our campus is a Covered Bridge 00:29:06.17\00:29:08.51 which is a local landmark. 00:29:08.54\00:29:12.45 Milo surrounded by National Forest 00:29:12.48\00:29:14.32 and sits along a full mile of the South Umpqua River, 00:29:14.35\00:29:17.39 allowing for learning beyond the classroom 00:29:17.42\00:29:19.59 and opportunities to connect with God through nature. 00:29:19.62\00:29:23.73 The campus has a covered over walkway 00:29:23.76\00:29:26.03 that connects all the buildings, 00:29:26.06\00:29:27.70 the dormitories, the church, 00:29:27.73\00:29:29.50 the cafeteria and the classrooms. 00:29:29.53\00:29:31.57 I'm Randy Thornton, 00:29:31.60\00:29:32.93 principal at Milo Adventist Academy. 00:29:32.97\00:29:35.27 I believe that location has a profound impact 00:29:35.30\00:29:38.84 on the culture of any institution. 00:29:38.87\00:29:41.91 And that's certainly the case here at Milo Adventist Academy. 00:29:41.94\00:29:45.38 I had a colleague tell me when I first got here, 00:29:45.41\00:29:47.68 the students feel safe at Milo. 00:29:47.72\00:29:50.09 I thought that was a little bit of a maybe even cheesy cliché, 00:29:50.12\00:29:53.86 and that they were talking about physical safety. 00:29:53.89\00:29:56.93 I learned right away that certainly is true. 00:29:56.96\00:30:00.60 But even more importantly, 00:30:00.63\00:30:02.80 that kids feel safe to be themselves, 00:30:02.83\00:30:05.97 whether you're from another continent, 00:30:06.00\00:30:09.10 or right here in our backyard, 00:30:09.14\00:30:12.61 whether you're rich whether you're poor, 00:30:12.64\00:30:15.14 kids feel safe 00:30:15.18\00:30:16.75 to be who they are here in the Milo family. 00:30:16.78\00:30:21.65 So my name is Michael [inaudible] Heston. 00:30:21.68\00:30:24.39 And this is broad forking, 00:30:24.42\00:30:27.06 I'm going to be a junior next year. 00:30:27.09\00:30:28.79 As far as I can tell, 00:30:28.82\00:30:30.16 it's just a manual way of doing the rototill. 00:30:30.23\00:30:34.03 It helps break up the soil, 00:30:34.10\00:30:36.20 so that the roots of the new plants 00:30:36.23\00:30:39.50 can grow inside. 00:30:39.53\00:30:41.90 I like the fact 00:30:41.94\00:30:43.27 that we're surrounded by nature. 00:30:43.30\00:30:45.87 I like the seclusion, the ability to be myself, 00:30:45.91\00:30:49.51 to be accepted. 00:30:49.54\00:30:51.28 When I first came here, 00:30:51.31\00:30:53.25 I immediately settled in and felt like home. 00:30:53.28\00:30:56.28 These things get bent out of other places sometimes. 00:30:56.32\00:31:02.49 So, hey, Myer, could you help me? 00:31:02.52\00:31:04.86 Yeah. Thanks. 00:31:04.89\00:31:08.43 Oh, you got a hammer. 00:31:08.46\00:31:09.80 Milo has a work study program, 00:31:12.63\00:31:14.77 which gives students an opportunity 00:31:14.80\00:31:16.57 to do their part in funding their education. 00:31:16.60\00:31:20.08 My name is [inaudible], 00:31:20.11\00:31:21.48 and I'm here at Milo Academy learning how to do fabrication. 00:31:21.51\00:31:24.95 So I got tired of beating that broad fork yesterday. 00:31:24.98\00:31:29.28 So now we're making some parts to make it good. 00:31:29.32\00:31:33.96 On this broad fork we'll test the piece we made. 00:31:33.99\00:31:36.76 Let's see what it looks like. 00:31:36.83\00:31:38.83 Okay. 00:31:38.86\00:31:40.20 I think we need to keep working on this side a little bit more 00:31:40.23\00:31:43.10 so the end can touch. 00:31:43.13\00:31:46.37 In addition to traditional classroom education, 00:31:46.40\00:31:49.10 we provide a wide range of extracurricular 00:31:49.14\00:31:51.51 and vocational classes, 00:31:51.54\00:31:53.14 including photography, horsemanship, 00:31:53.17\00:31:56.44 heavy equipment, residential construction, 00:31:56.48\00:31:59.85 culinary arts, and so much more. 00:31:59.88\00:32:03.05 This is our greenhouse for the agriculture program. 00:32:03.08\00:32:06.29 This are baby plants. 00:32:06.32\00:32:08.29 We have some more over here. 00:32:08.32\00:32:10.43 And we take these out to the garden 00:32:10.46\00:32:11.86 and plant them and it's helpful 00:32:11.89\00:32:13.60 because we grow the food for the cafeteria 00:32:13.63\00:32:16.10 and for the Milo market so people can buy the food. 00:32:16.13\00:32:20.47 And this is one of our baby cucumber plants, 00:32:20.54\00:32:22.94 just about ready to be harvested. 00:32:22.97\00:32:24.64 Welcome to Milo Academy horse barn. 00:32:24.67\00:32:26.68 My name is Jeff Miller. 00:32:26.71\00:32:28.04 Hello, my name is Mikaila Frost 00:32:28.08\00:32:29.94 and this is Lucky 00:32:29.98\00:32:31.31 We have approximately 20 horses here. 00:32:31.35\00:32:33.45 Some of them are privates horses 00:32:33.52\00:32:34.95 that students bring. 00:32:34.98\00:32:36.32 Some of them are big lake horses 00:32:36.35\00:32:37.69 and some of them are owned by Milo Academy. 00:32:37.72\00:32:39.69 Here at Milo Academy, 00:32:39.72\00:32:41.06 we have a horse boarding program 00:32:41.09\00:32:42.42 where you can board your own horse. 00:32:42.46\00:32:43.83 Milo Academy students 00:32:43.86\00:32:45.19 built the arena and also the stalls. 00:32:45.23\00:32:47.50 It gives the students a chance to get out in nature 00:32:47.53\00:32:50.10 and go for horse rides. 00:32:50.17\00:32:51.70 Hope you come to Milo Academy, bring your horse when you come. 00:32:51.73\00:32:56.34 Everyone knows 00:32:56.37\00:32:57.71 that Adventist education is not cheap. 00:32:57.74\00:33:00.58 I can assure you 00:33:00.61\00:33:01.94 that Milo Academy doesn't have too much money. 00:33:01.98\00:33:04.25 But what I have seen over and over again 00:33:04.28\00:33:07.22 is that where there's a will, there's a way. 00:33:07.25\00:33:10.49 One of the things that breaks my heart the most. 00:33:10.52\00:33:12.39 And I've heard this on numerous occasions, 00:33:12.42\00:33:15.66 that people just assume 00:33:15.69\00:33:17.23 that it's out of their reach financially. 00:33:17.26\00:33:20.20 And so they just don't even connect, 00:33:20.23\00:33:22.20 they don't ask. 00:33:22.23\00:33:23.77 Covering the cost of Milo Academy 00:33:23.80\00:33:25.73 is absolutely doable for anybody, 00:33:25.77\00:33:28.07 no matter your income level. 00:33:28.10\00:33:30.41 We may not know all of the ways to make that happen 00:33:30.44\00:33:34.11 but God does. 00:33:34.18\00:33:35.51 And when He's got a plan for your child, 00:33:35.54\00:33:37.78 for you to be a student here at Milo Academy, 00:33:37.81\00:33:41.05 it's going to happen. 00:33:41.08\00:33:42.42 We call it the Milo miracle, 00:33:42.45\00:33:44.29 and I've seen it work over and over again. 00:33:44.32\00:33:47.66 Maybe you know somebody who should be here at Milo. 00:33:47.69\00:33:50.83 Give us a call and let us know who that is 00:33:50.86\00:33:53.16 and we'll follow up. 00:33:53.19\00:33:54.83 We gave away over $750,000 in Student Aid last year. 00:33:54.86\00:34:00.04 Add to that a wide range of scholarships 00:34:00.07\00:34:02.27 that are available 00:34:02.30\00:34:03.64 and we've got a winning combination. 00:34:03.71\00:34:05.14 We took a music tour not long ago, 00:34:08.31\00:34:10.95 and homeschool kids do great at Milo. 00:34:10.98\00:34:13.42 And after the program, 00:34:13.45\00:34:14.78 a mom came up and they had homeschooled their whole life 00:34:14.82\00:34:17.75 and never considered Adventist academy, 00:34:17.79\00:34:20.16 but the heavy equipment program 00:34:20.19\00:34:22.89 just absolutely captivated them 00:34:22.92\00:34:25.26 and they were here at Milo the next term. 00:34:25.29\00:34:28.96 My name is Charles Sparks. 00:34:29.00\00:34:31.23 I'm involved in a heavy equipment program. 00:34:31.27\00:34:34.24 We offer opportunity for young men and women 00:34:34.27\00:34:37.24 to run heavy equipment. 00:34:37.31\00:34:39.31 The machines are easy learn how to run 00:34:39.34\00:34:41.34 and they exert a lot of force, safety first above all. 00:34:41.38\00:34:45.48 It's a talent. 00:34:45.51\00:34:46.85 You know it comes easy to some people 00:34:46.92\00:34:49.12 and those are the people that enjoy it. 00:34:49.15\00:34:51.12 And some people, it's, you know what, 00:34:51.15\00:34:54.79 you can't get past running the machine, 00:34:54.82\00:34:56.83 so it's hard to do the work. 00:34:56.86\00:35:00.43 I really appreciate about Charles 00:35:00.50\00:35:02.73 is that he is so patient with the students 00:35:02.76\00:35:07.97 that sometimes have a hard time learning 00:35:08.00\00:35:10.81 that is really incredible 00:35:10.84\00:35:12.17 to have teachers like that at Milo. 00:35:12.21\00:35:14.81 Heavy equipment pieces 00:35:14.84\00:35:16.18 that we have, we have a bulldozer, 00:35:16.21\00:35:18.15 excavator and front-end loader, dump truck, 00:35:18.18\00:35:21.28 and little excavator. 00:35:21.32\00:35:23.62 So we're always happy to have machines that are donated. 00:35:23.69\00:35:27.69 We rebuilt a D6 Cat 00:35:27.72\00:35:30.66 from the ground up right down to the paint. 00:35:30.73\00:35:33.80 We couldn't do Milo Academy 00:35:33.83\00:35:35.50 without the many partners or the donors 00:35:35.53\00:35:38.73 that help make the Milo experience possible. 00:35:38.77\00:35:42.04 Whether it's donated plants, heavy equipment, 00:35:42.07\00:35:45.94 probably the biggest of all, 00:35:45.97\00:35:47.58 the Student Aid funds 00:35:47.61\00:35:49.31 that are so necessary for kids to be here. 00:35:49.34\00:35:53.65 God has blessed us with a unique environment 00:35:53.72\00:35:56.15 of international connection 00:35:56.18\00:35:58.12 here with almost 30% of our student body 00:35:58.15\00:36:00.89 coming from all around the world. 00:36:00.96\00:36:04.66 I'm from Mexico City. 00:36:04.69\00:36:06.43 I'm from Moscow, Russia. 00:36:06.46\00:36:08.03 And we're international students 00:36:08.06\00:36:09.66 here at Milo Adventist Academy 00:36:09.70\00:36:11.80 learning how to do construction. 00:36:11.83\00:36:14.14 We are so, so grateful for volunteers, 00:36:14.17\00:36:18.21 student missionaries, 00:36:18.24\00:36:19.71 not us going to them but them coming to us. 00:36:19.74\00:36:23.35 If you've got a special skill, 00:36:23.38\00:36:24.98 special talent, knowledge, 00:36:25.01\00:36:27.12 career expertise in a particular field, 00:36:27.15\00:36:30.19 we'd love to have you here to share 00:36:30.22\00:36:32.75 or talk with our kids and our staff. 00:36:32.79\00:36:35.69 I want to introduce you to the Milo guy, 00:36:35.72\00:36:39.06 the guy with a little graduation at, 00:36:39.09\00:36:41.26 and we'd love nothing more 00:36:41.30\00:36:42.83 than to see your student through the graduation line 00:36:42.86\00:36:46.53 someday here at Milo. 00:36:46.57\00:36:47.90 So you guys have the broad fork all fixed. 00:36:47.94\00:36:51.17 Not that beautiful but not bad for my first time. 00:36:51.21\00:36:53.27 Well, why don't you come to Milo? 00:36:57.15\00:36:58.51 It's a great place to study, work and fixed the broad fork. 00:36:58.55\00:37:03.62 There are multiple ways for us to host you here at Milo. 00:37:03.69\00:37:07.26 It's super simple. 00:37:07.29\00:37:08.62 Give us a call 541-825-3200. Milo. 00:37:21.70\00:37:26.78 Text the word MILO to 313131. 00:37:26.81\00:37:32.25 Text MILO in all caps to 313131. 00:37:32.28\00:37:38.02 We hope to see you here at Milo. 00:37:38.05\00:37:40.26 Hello, I'm Jill Morikone 00:37:59.67\00:38:01.01 and I was watching that video 00:38:01.04\00:38:02.61 and just kind of sat back and thought, 00:38:02.64\00:38:04.88 I want to go back to school. 00:38:04.91\00:38:06.25 Did that make you want to go back to school? 00:38:06.28\00:38:07.98 What an incredible program 00:38:08.02\00:38:10.59 they have at Milo Adventist Academy, 00:38:10.62\00:38:13.22 and it's my privilege now to introduce to you. 00:38:13.25\00:38:15.59 We're going to have a Skype call 00:38:15.62\00:38:17.26 with the principal of Milo Adventist Academy. 00:38:17.33\00:38:19.89 That is Mr. Randy Thornton. 00:38:19.93\00:38:22.20 Mr. Randy, are you there? 00:38:22.23\00:38:24.83 I'm here, Jill. 00:38:24.87\00:38:27.17 What an incredible school you have there. 00:38:27.24\00:38:30.11 Tell me just a bit about yourself. 00:38:30.14\00:38:32.17 How long have you been at Milo, 00:38:32.21\00:38:33.78 and what is your journey been 00:38:33.81\00:38:35.14 and then we'll talk about the school? 00:38:35.18\00:38:37.65 Yeah, I've been here at Milo for nine years now. 00:38:37.68\00:38:40.92 I didn't start with the idea of education in mind. 00:38:40.95\00:38:44.09 I was a building contractor for more than 20 years. 00:38:44.12\00:38:47.82 But God called me to education ministry 00:38:47.86\00:38:51.19 and couldn't find a place 00:38:51.23\00:38:52.69 that I would rather be than Milo. 00:38:52.73\00:38:54.60 Amen. 00:38:54.63\00:38:55.96 So talk to us about the mission statement 00:38:56.00\00:38:58.97 of Milo Adventist Academy 00:38:59.00\00:39:00.84 and what the mission of the school 00:39:00.87\00:39:02.94 really is all about. 00:39:02.97\00:39:05.81 Well, 00:39:05.84\00:39:07.18 our mission statement 00:39:07.21\00:39:08.61 sits on three important legs of the stool. 00:39:08.64\00:39:13.52 First and foremost, 00:39:13.55\00:39:15.45 of course, 00:39:15.48\00:39:16.82 we want kids to get to know Jesus better. 00:39:16.89\00:39:20.39 And so we like to promote every day, 00:39:20.46\00:39:24.26 the best friend relationship with Jesus. 00:39:24.33\00:39:29.40 And it's done in so many ways that you know, 00:39:29.43\00:39:34.07 we have the standard, just, you know, 00:39:34.14\00:39:37.01 a daily experience talking with Jesus. 00:39:37.04\00:39:39.91 But this COVID situation showed us as a staff 00:39:39.94\00:39:44.78 how important it was to come regularly. 00:39:44.81\00:39:48.48 The school day in an academy level 00:39:48.52\00:39:51.39 doesn't always start at the same time 00:39:51.42\00:39:53.02 for every teacher like it does at elementary, 00:39:53.05\00:39:56.22 and we just knew when everybody had to go home 00:39:56.26\00:39:59.06 and we still had a good number of students here, 00:39:59.09\00:40:02.50 the International kids that couldn't get home. 00:40:02.53\00:40:04.80 And we just said we need to come together 00:40:04.83\00:40:07.24 as a staff as a family 00:40:07.27\00:40:09.37 and every day we came to pray and read Scripture. 00:40:09.40\00:40:13.07 So really best friend relationship with Jesus 00:40:13.11\00:40:16.28 is the first and most critical piece. 00:40:16.31\00:40:19.41 You know, we all aspire to excellence in academics, 00:40:19.45\00:40:23.49 that's another one of the pillars 00:40:23.52\00:40:26.32 of our mission statement and we value. 00:40:26.35\00:40:31.83 It's not always bigger is better. 00:40:31.86\00:40:34.60 We've had advanced placement type courses, 00:40:34.63\00:40:38.43 but really just the most sturdy 00:40:38.47\00:40:40.84 and foundational education possible. 00:40:40.87\00:40:44.11 We're doing some new and innovative things 00:40:44.14\00:40:46.61 that maybe we'll get to share a little bit later 00:40:46.68\00:40:49.18 with focusing on the student 00:40:49.21\00:40:52.85 and their individualized education, 00:40:52.88\00:40:56.25 mastery learning, it's called. 00:40:56.28\00:40:58.65 But one of the things in the third pillar 00:40:58.69\00:41:01.76 of our mission is showing the kids, 00:41:01.79\00:41:06.46 giving them an opportunity to experience 00:41:06.49\00:41:09.76 the joy of service. 00:41:09.80\00:41:11.90 I remember some time ago, hearing my son, 00:41:11.93\00:41:15.57 tell me while he was in university at Walla Walla. 00:41:15.60\00:41:20.31 He said, "Hey, I talked to grandpa the other day, 00:41:20.38\00:41:22.84 and it was the most fascinating thing 00:41:22.88\00:41:24.61 that he shared with me, " 00:41:24.65\00:41:27.05 that, that the most important part, 00:41:27.12\00:41:31.15 maybe the exclusive reason 00:41:31.19\00:41:34.19 that God has put us here on this earth is to, 00:41:34.26\00:41:37.66 to serve each other. 00:41:37.69\00:41:39.36 And that's a fundamental part 00:41:39.39\00:41:40.80 of what we want kids 00:41:40.83\00:41:43.00 first to experience in their own lives, 00:41:43.03\00:41:45.70 so that they can feel the passion 00:41:45.73\00:41:48.07 and start living every day 00:41:48.10\00:41:51.01 from now until the kingdom of heaven, 00:41:51.04\00:41:53.78 serving others is what it's really all about. 00:41:53.81\00:41:59.18 And we wrap it up with, 00:41:59.21\00:42:00.55 we wrap it up 00:42:00.62\00:42:01.95 with this little saying in a safe, 00:42:01.98\00:42:03.32 nurturing environment. 00:42:03.35\00:42:05.69 Like I shared in the video, 00:42:05.72\00:42:07.69 it seemed like a cliché to me at first, 00:42:07.72\00:42:10.86 that here in this beautiful, 00:42:10.93\00:42:14.33 remote location that it was a physical safety, 00:42:14.36\00:42:16.67 but really no, it's a soul safety, 00:42:16.70\00:42:21.00 that I'm safe being me who God made me 00:42:21.04\00:42:24.34 and Milo gives me that opportunity 00:42:24.37\00:42:27.28 to learn and experience that. 00:42:27.31\00:42:28.68 Amen, I love that, Mr. Randy, that's great. 00:42:28.71\00:42:31.58 What a wonderful three-fold, as you called it, 00:42:31.61\00:42:34.65 I like that 00:42:34.68\00:42:36.02 there's Jesus is my best friend, 00:42:36.05\00:42:38.42 excellent academics, 00:42:38.45\00:42:40.46 and then experience the joy of service. 00:42:40.49\00:42:43.09 I mean, that is what we're all called to do 00:42:43.12\00:42:45.33 and to be as Christians, 00:42:45.36\00:42:47.63 and what better way than to train young people in that. 00:42:47.66\00:42:51.80 Talk to us a bit about the work study program. 00:42:51.83\00:42:55.17 I was really fascinated by that 00:42:55.20\00:42:56.64 when I watched the video, 00:42:56.71\00:42:58.57 and the work study program. 00:42:58.61\00:42:59.94 Talk to us about that? 00:42:59.97\00:43:02.71 You know, some time ago, 00:43:02.74\00:43:05.11 I learned through some reading in the Spirit of Prophecy, 00:43:05.15\00:43:09.88 that it's so critical, 00:43:09.92\00:43:12.72 again, the importance of excellence in academics. 00:43:12.75\00:43:17.79 But Sister White shared that, 00:43:17.83\00:43:21.93 that if we were to only be able to access 00:43:21.96\00:43:26.47 a one-sided education, 00:43:26.50\00:43:28.74 and I'm grateful that at this time in life, 00:43:28.77\00:43:32.44 have to be limited by that one thing. 00:43:32.47\00:43:35.38 And whether it was the book learning, 00:43:35.41\00:43:37.98 or whether practical life skills 00:43:38.01\00:43:40.12 that she talks so much about, 00:43:40.15\00:43:41.95 there's absolutely no question. 00:43:41.98\00:43:44.22 She says we must unhesitatingly answer, 00:43:44.29\00:43:49.49 that, that it's that practical life skills 00:43:49.52\00:43:52.96 that are most crucial to our success in life 00:43:52.99\00:43:59.57 and again serving others. 00:43:59.60\00:44:01.50 So that's what's really drawn me and my staff 00:44:01.54\00:44:05.64 to really embracing the practical life skills. 00:44:05.67\00:44:10.85 We have all of the excellent connections 00:44:10.88\00:44:13.82 with the academic classroom, 00:44:13.85\00:44:15.92 all of the standard things 00:44:15.95\00:44:17.29 that you would expect to experience, 00:44:17.32\00:44:19.55 but we want to take it beyond that 00:44:19.59\00:44:22.22 and work when I was going through academy, 00:44:22.26\00:44:26.29 it was simply a way to help you 00:44:26.33\00:44:28.33 fund your Adventist education. 00:44:28.36\00:44:33.64 But here we want it to be a core curriculum, 00:44:33.67\00:44:37.94 not just a financial piece. 00:44:37.97\00:44:40.21 So we, it's part of a required course of study 00:44:40.28\00:44:45.05 here at Milo. 00:44:45.08\00:44:46.41 And we kind of put the cherry on top 00:44:46.45\00:44:48.48 with these vocational certificates 00:44:48.52\00:44:51.15 that you saw in the video and growing them every day 00:44:51.19\00:44:54.32 and a new one. 00:44:54.36\00:44:55.69 We call it the Innovation Lab, 00:44:55.72\00:44:57.53 you know dealing with 3D printers 00:44:57.56\00:45:00.13 and CNC machines and some coding, fun stuff. 00:45:00.20\00:45:07.07 A new one, I'm grateful. 00:45:07.14\00:45:10.61 I also again to mention Walla Walla University 00:45:10.64\00:45:13.68 and a new program 00:45:13.71\00:45:15.04 that they are making available not just to Milo, 00:45:15.08\00:45:17.48 but an introduction to engineering 00:45:17.55\00:45:19.95 fits very well into our view 00:45:20.02\00:45:24.65 of this vocational certificate opportunity. 00:45:24.69\00:45:28.29 So what would be some of the vocational certificates 00:45:28.32\00:45:30.53 that the students could receive? 00:45:30.56\00:45:34.03 Obviously heavy equipment might be one, 00:45:34.10\00:45:36.26 because I saw some of that or construction, 00:45:36.30\00:45:38.40 so talk to us 00:45:38.43\00:45:39.77 some of what those opportunities 00:45:39.80\00:45:41.60 are for the students? 00:45:41.64\00:45:43.44 Yes, so like you mentioned, the heavy equipment, 00:45:43.51\00:45:47.11 operation and repair, construction. 00:45:47.18\00:45:52.08 There is another option that we have culinary arts, 00:45:52.11\00:45:55.92 we have even one student that came to us last year 00:45:55.95\00:45:59.52 from Russia, 00:45:59.55\00:46:00.89 and she wanted to have 00:46:00.96\00:46:03.86 to get more advanced learning. 00:46:03.93\00:46:05.79 And she's taking a second year, after she graduated, 00:46:05.83\00:46:09.50 we created an advanced level of culinary arts. 00:46:09.53\00:46:12.97 And that innovation lab 00:46:13.00\00:46:15.37 that I mentioned, agriculture, 00:46:15.40\00:46:17.81 I don't want to forget agriculture 00:46:17.84\00:46:20.08 has been a very integral part of our program, 00:46:20.11\00:46:24.58 both academically but also, 00:46:24.61\00:46:28.12 you know, the integration with the cafeteria 00:46:28.15\00:46:32.32 and getting healthy and quality food 00:46:32.35\00:46:35.52 for the kids to eat, and to learn 00:46:35.56\00:46:38.59 how they could do this themselves 00:46:38.63\00:46:42.10 when they graduate for life. 00:46:42.13\00:46:44.90 And in our Milo market is the name, 00:46:44.93\00:46:49.40 we call it that a lot of our produce 00:46:49.44\00:46:52.57 and other things go into the market, 00:46:52.61\00:46:55.81 which is a community outreach, 00:46:55.84\00:46:58.25 probably more than anything for us. 00:46:58.28\00:47:00.72 It's grown as a financial benefit to the school. 00:47:00.75\00:47:05.95 But I've heard that some of our staff, 00:47:05.99\00:47:10.33 probably my number one favorite staff, 00:47:10.36\00:47:12.99 if I can say that my wife... 00:47:13.03\00:47:15.93 That's a good thing. You can say that. 00:47:15.96\00:47:19.23 She's talked about 00:47:19.27\00:47:21.17 how it's not important 00:47:21.20\00:47:23.27 how much money we make in the market, 00:47:23.30\00:47:25.94 it's the people that we draw in to our campus 00:47:25.97\00:47:29.74 and that we can really, can reach. 00:47:29.78\00:47:31.58 So it's community building, there as well, 00:47:31.61\00:47:35.08 that we're trying to build 00:47:35.12\00:47:37.39 with our academic programming too. 00:47:37.42\00:47:40.06 That's really a win-win-win, 00:47:40.09\00:47:41.62 because it's helping the students 00:47:41.66\00:47:42.99 and it's teaching them life skills, 00:47:43.02\00:47:44.53 which is amazing. 00:47:44.56\00:47:45.89 It's helping the school financially 00:47:45.93\00:47:47.50 for the financial benefits that it would reap. 00:47:47.53\00:47:49.76 And it's the joy of service. 00:47:49.80\00:47:51.63 That was the third I think of your three-prong approach 00:47:51.67\00:47:54.47 that joy of service and outreach in the community. 00:47:54.50\00:47:56.91 I love that. 00:47:56.94\00:47:58.47 So let's shift to the mastery learning. 00:47:58.51\00:48:02.41 What is mastery learning, 00:48:02.44\00:48:04.28 individualized learning 00:48:04.31\00:48:05.65 and more student focused instead of teacher focused? 00:48:05.68\00:48:08.32 What does that look like at Milo Academy? 00:48:08.35\00:48:11.25 Well, you know, 00:48:11.29\00:48:12.62 traditionally for more than 100 years, 00:48:12.65\00:48:14.26 in all forms of education, Adventist education included, 00:48:14.29\00:48:19.13 it's been the sage on the stage, 00:48:19.16\00:48:21.26 you know, that teacher up front, 00:48:21.30\00:48:23.26 the font of knowledge, and that's a really good thing. 00:48:23.30\00:48:27.07 But all students, all people, including us, 00:48:27.14\00:48:32.04 we learn at different rates, and it just breaks my heart. 00:48:32.07\00:48:35.98 And I see it every year as a teacher, 00:48:36.01\00:48:38.28 as an administrator. 00:48:38.31\00:48:41.12 Students who need more time with a particular topic. 00:48:41.15\00:48:45.35 And I see other students 00:48:45.39\00:48:46.76 on the other end of the spectrum, 00:48:46.79\00:48:48.26 who are, they got it, 00:48:48.29\00:48:50.53 and they're excited and raring to go to the next level. 00:48:50.56\00:48:54.83 But we have to wait because we usually, again, 00:48:54.86\00:48:57.57 typically take whole group at a time, 00:48:57.60\00:49:01.34 but when we can individualize, 00:49:01.37\00:49:04.24 then it gives the power back to the student 00:49:04.31\00:49:07.58 for their own education. 00:49:07.61\00:49:08.94 So mastery says, 00:49:08.98\00:49:11.71 if I don't quite get this algebra topic, 00:49:11.75\00:49:14.58 and I need a little bit more time, 00:49:14.62\00:49:15.95 we're going to give you that time, 00:49:15.98\00:49:17.89 we're not going to move ahead 00:49:17.92\00:49:19.62 and leave you behind this or that advanced student. 00:49:19.65\00:49:23.43 We're not going to hold you back. 00:49:23.46\00:49:25.39 We're going to let you get off and run with that. 00:49:25.43\00:49:29.50 So mastery learning 00:49:29.53\00:49:31.00 doesn't leave holes in their academic planning. 00:49:31.03\00:49:35.57 And we're grateful to engage 00:49:35.60\00:49:38.81 in some tools that have been developed. 00:49:38.84\00:49:42.34 Not super recently, 00:49:42.38\00:49:44.28 but a number of years ago through Marzano Research, 00:49:44.31\00:49:48.05 and where it gives that pace of learning to the student. 00:49:48.08\00:49:53.66 Always teacher directed, 00:49:53.69\00:49:56.76 there's still a lot of important 00:49:56.83\00:50:00.60 whole class dialogue, 00:50:00.63\00:50:02.43 Bible would probably be my best example, 00:50:02.46\00:50:06.00 where we need that time, 00:50:06.03\00:50:07.84 kind of like Sabbath School class, 00:50:07.87\00:50:10.11 to as a group 00:50:10.14\00:50:11.47 to chew and to share between each other. 00:50:11.51\00:50:14.61 You know, we've heard about the old fashioned three R's, 00:50:14.64\00:50:18.88 reading, writing, and arithmetic. 00:50:18.91\00:50:21.12 But a lot of times now, 00:50:21.15\00:50:22.48 today we're talking about the four C's. 00:50:22.52\00:50:24.95 And one of those is collaboration. 00:50:24.99\00:50:27.76 Really, really important for us, again, 00:50:27.79\00:50:31.06 because it's the way that we were created for community 00:50:31.09\00:50:33.50 right back from the Garden of Eden. 00:50:33.53\00:50:35.73 God saw that we needed each other. 00:50:35.76\00:50:38.60 And so that collaboration in the learning environment 00:50:38.63\00:50:41.74 is super critical. 00:50:41.77\00:50:43.71 So yeah, mastery learning, not leaving kids behind, 00:50:43.74\00:50:47.61 and letting them run at their speed. 00:50:47.64\00:50:50.85 We're all individualized people. 00:50:50.88\00:50:52.51 I mean, that's how God created us. 00:50:52.55\00:50:54.65 So what a wonderful concept 00:50:54.68\00:50:56.99 to include that and involve that 00:50:57.02\00:50:58.89 in the classroom instruction and the curriculum 00:50:58.92\00:51:01.72 and what takes place that is very good. 00:51:01.76\00:51:04.13 We just have a few moments left. 00:51:04.16\00:51:05.76 Let's shift to the international flavor 00:51:05.79\00:51:08.90 at your school, 00:51:08.93\00:51:10.27 because there's quite a few international students 00:51:10.30\00:51:12.87 and then talk to us 00:51:12.90\00:51:14.24 about the student missionaries as well? 00:51:14.27\00:51:17.14 Yeah, you know, 00:51:17.21\00:51:18.54 we know that we live in a global community 00:51:18.57\00:51:21.34 evermore today than ever before. 00:51:21.38\00:51:24.88 You know, it's not something 00:51:24.91\00:51:26.48 that I or we as a staff visioned, 00:51:26.51\00:51:30.09 and how often do we see God's leading 00:51:30.12\00:51:33.56 in our institutions, 00:51:33.59\00:51:34.92 in our own personal lives that way, 00:51:34.96\00:51:37.73 but it was through our mission service, 00:51:37.76\00:51:40.50 like, you know, 00:51:40.53\00:51:41.86 virtually every academy and many other schools do, 00:51:41.90\00:51:45.17 going out and sharing 00:51:45.20\00:51:47.44 and those mission experiences. 00:51:47.47\00:51:50.54 Again, I think everybody sees this 00:51:50.61\00:51:53.01 as we think we're going out to do a work for somebody else. 00:51:53.04\00:51:57.55 And surely we accomplish that. 00:51:57.58\00:52:00.02 But the work that's done in our parts, 00:52:00.05\00:52:02.18 the kids recognize 00:52:02.22\00:52:04.52 that I got more out of that than I gave. 00:52:04.55\00:52:08.66 And that's why we want Milo to be a global community 00:52:08.69\00:52:14.76 from those outreach 00:52:14.80\00:52:16.33 if we want to call them that activities, 00:52:16.36\00:52:19.47 we made relationships, we go back home, 00:52:19.50\00:52:22.44 and those relationships 00:52:22.47\00:52:24.11 continue to, to build and nurture and be nourished. 00:52:24.14\00:52:28.78 And some of these friends 00:52:28.81\00:52:30.35 that the kids make 00:52:30.38\00:52:31.71 when they're somewhere in another continent. 00:52:31.75\00:52:35.45 They say, "I want to go to Milo too." 00:52:35.48\00:52:38.19 And we say, 00:52:38.22\00:52:39.55 "Sure, we've got a place for you." 00:52:39.59\00:52:40.99 And that's how we built our international population. 00:52:41.02\00:52:43.46 Near 35% of our student body is that. 00:52:43.53\00:52:49.00 I love saying to many 00:52:49.03\00:52:51.50 that's exactly what heaven is going to look like 00:52:51.53\00:52:54.04 because there aren't going to be 00:52:54.07\00:52:55.60 any Adventists in heaven. 00:52:55.64\00:52:57.44 No Americans in heaven. 00:52:57.51\00:52:59.41 No, you name it, fill in the blank. 00:52:59.44\00:53:01.61 We're all just going to be children of God together. 00:53:01.64\00:53:05.35 So we're just grateful for that. 00:53:05.38\00:53:07.55 That that whole family of God feel 00:53:07.62\00:53:10.59 that we have here at Milo 00:53:10.62\00:53:12.79 Amen. 00:53:12.82\00:53:14.16 Thank you so much, Principal Thornton, 00:53:14.19\00:53:15.92 for taking time to share with us today 00:53:15.96\00:53:18.46 what God is doing in and through 00:53:18.49\00:53:20.90 Milo Adventist Academy. 00:53:20.93\00:53:22.50 I want to remind you, 00:53:22.53\00:53:24.17 if you have a young person 00:53:24.20\00:53:25.77 who is interested in attending an academy. 00:53:25.80\00:53:28.37 If you have, 00:53:28.40\00:53:29.74 want to financially support 00:53:29.77\00:53:31.84 the ministry of what God is doing 00:53:31.87\00:53:34.48 at Milo Adventist Academy 00:53:34.51\00:53:36.01 or maybe help fund some of those worthy students, 00:53:36.04\00:53:39.18 you can always contact them at MiloAcademy.org. 00:53:39.21\00:53:44.59 That's Milo, MiloAcademy.org. 00:53:44.62\00:53:49.02 At 3ABN, 00:53:49.06\00:53:50.43 we stand in support 00:53:50.46\00:53:51.79 of Christian Seventh-day Adventist education. 00:53:51.83\00:53:54.40 And we're so grateful for what God is doing 00:53:54.43\00:53:56.23 in and through Milo Adventist Academy. 00:53:56.26\00:54:00.84 Thank you, praise the Lord. 00:54:00.87\00:54:02.67 Well, there you have it. 00:54:02.70\00:54:04.21 You have heard about the Indiana Academy 00:54:04.24\00:54:07.21 and the Milo Seventh-day Adventist Christian Academy, 00:54:07.28\00:54:10.15 two fine academies 00:54:10.18\00:54:11.98 that we would like to encourage you to consider 00:54:12.01\00:54:14.92 to bring your young people to continue their education, 00:54:14.95\00:54:18.15 to continue their education 00:54:18.19\00:54:19.55 and prepare them for college 00:54:19.59\00:54:21.86 and prepare them to face life's difficulties 00:54:21.89\00:54:24.13 with a stronger and firmer hold on Jesus Christ. 00:54:24.16\00:54:27.73 Because these schools offer 00:54:27.76\00:54:30.30 the teachings of Christ 00:54:30.37\00:54:31.70 in addition to the regular academic subjects. 00:54:31.73\00:54:34.47 We praise the Lord for these schools. 00:54:34.50\00:54:36.34 We encourage you to pray for them 00:54:36.37\00:54:38.27 and we encourage you to pray for our young people 00:54:38.31\00:54:41.11 that in today's time 00:54:41.14\00:54:42.81 they are facing one of the most difficult times 00:54:42.84\00:54:45.48 to live in this world 00:54:45.51\00:54:47.25 because we are living in the last days. 00:54:47.32\00:54:49.75 And I praise the Lord for 3ABN. 00:54:49.78\00:54:51.95 3ABN that God has entrusted with a mission 00:54:51.99\00:54:54.92 to preach the undiluted 00:54:54.96\00:54:56.59 three angels' messages to the world. 00:54:56.62\00:54:59.23 I want to thank you for your support of 3ABN 00:54:59.26\00:55:01.86 and encourage you to continue supporting 00:55:01.90\00:55:04.40 so that we can continue preaching 00:55:04.43\00:55:06.53 the everlasting gospel 24 hours a day, 00:55:06.57\00:55:10.61 reaching the world 00:55:10.64\00:55:11.97 with a message that the world needs to hear 00:55:12.01\00:55:14.71 during this time. 00:55:14.74\00:55:16.51 As you know, 00:55:16.54\00:55:17.91 things are happening at such a quick pace, 00:55:17.95\00:55:20.35 that we must do what we can 00:55:20.42\00:55:22.58 to bring the gospel to as many people as possible 00:55:22.62\00:55:25.22 in the shortest time as possible. 00:55:25.25\00:55:26.96 And for those of you 00:55:26.99\00:55:28.32 that are listening to me right now, 00:55:28.36\00:55:30.13 they have not yet given their lives to Jesus Christ, 00:55:30.16\00:55:33.13 I do have an invitation for you. 00:55:33.16\00:55:36.06 Give your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:55:36.10\00:55:38.70 and you will begin to have peace and happiness 00:55:38.73\00:55:41.60 that begins in this world and continues forever. 00:55:41.64\00:55:45.91 God bless you. 00:55:45.94\00:55:47.28
