00:02:12.13\00:02:14.83 How does sanctification connect with justification? 00:02:14.86\00:02:18.23 And if you're just new in the Word of God, 00:02:18.27\00:02:20.74 you might be saying, 00:02:20.77\00:02:22.10 "I don't even know what those words mean," 00:02:22.14\00:02:24.74 and we will unpack them today. 00:02:24.77\00:02:27.31 We'll talk about how we are sanctified. 00:02:27.38\00:02:29.48 What is the purpose of sanctification? 00:02:29.51\00:02:32.45 And what's our part? 00:02:32.48\00:02:33.82 What is our role to play and what is God's role? 00:02:33.85\00:02:36.99 So I want to introduce our family at this time, 00:02:37.02\00:02:40.36 to my right, Brother Ryan Day. 00:02:40.39\00:02:42.76 So good to have you here. 00:02:42.79\00:02:44.23 You work in our 3ABN pastoral department, 00:02:44.26\00:02:46.90 and you're Assistant 00:02:46.93\00:02:48.60 to the General Manager for 3ABN Praise Him, so. 00:02:48.63\00:02:50.70 Amen. 00:02:50.77\00:02:52.10 It's blessing to be here, 00:02:52.13\00:02:53.47 and I'm definitely excited about this topic, much needed. 00:02:53.50\00:02:55.54 Absolutely. 00:02:55.57\00:02:56.91 And to your right, Pastor John Lomacang, 00:02:56.94\00:02:59.87 pastor of the Thompsonville Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:02:59.91\00:03:02.11 and 3ABN Director of World Evangelism, 00:03:02.14\00:03:04.25 and delighted to have you here. 00:03:04.28\00:03:05.71 I could already tell, 00:03:05.75\00:03:07.12 we need three hours on this subject, you know. 00:03:07.15\00:03:10.59 As I said you earlier, 00:03:10.62\00:03:11.95 are you ready for what you have on, 00:03:11.99\00:03:13.56 for what you have activated. 00:03:13.59\00:03:15.26 This is a powerful topic. 00:03:15.29\00:03:17.13 One I believe that's... 00:03:17.16\00:03:19.46 I could use the term grossly misunderstood. 00:03:19.49\00:03:22.60 And sometimes it's become almost cliché 00:03:22.63\00:03:25.90 in the sense of the phrase of work of a lifetime. 00:03:25.93\00:03:29.00 So today, we're going to really unpack it, 00:03:29.04\00:03:31.07 and do whatever we can 00:03:31.11\00:03:32.71 with the time we have remaining. 00:03:32.74\00:03:34.18 So let's read a scripture verse and then we'll pray 00:03:34.21\00:03:36.95 and we'll jump right into our study. 00:03:36.98\00:03:39.08 So let's start with 1 Corinthians 6:11. 00:03:39.11\00:03:41.52 Hope you have your Bibles at home 00:03:41.55\00:03:43.32 and get ready to open them up 00:03:43.39\00:03:45.02 and study with us and your notepad, 00:03:45.05\00:03:46.76 so you can take notes. 00:03:46.79\00:03:48.12 1 Corinthians 6:11, "And such were some of you." 00:03:48.16\00:03:52.86 Now, if you read the previous verses, 00:03:52.89\00:03:54.56 there's an entire list of sins 00:03:54.60\00:03:57.47 of those fornicators and idolaters, 00:03:57.50\00:03:59.67 adulterers, thieves, covetous, homosexuals, 00:03:59.70\00:04:02.10 drunkards, all of these, 00:04:02.14\00:04:03.91 those people, that's all of us really. 00:04:03.94\00:04:06.27 All have sinned and fallen short 00:04:06.31\00:04:07.64 of the glory of God, 00:04:07.68\00:04:09.01 that we will not inherit the kingdom of God. 00:04:09.04\00:04:11.05 And then verse 11 gives us hope, 00:04:11.08\00:04:13.55 "And such were some of you. 00:04:13.62\00:04:16.15 But you were washed, you were sanctified, 00:04:16.18\00:04:21.29 you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus 00:04:21.32\00:04:24.49 and by the Spirit of our God." 00:04:24.53\00:04:27.43 That verse gives me incredible hope 00:04:27.50\00:04:29.90 'cause no matter our past, no matter what we have done, 00:04:29.93\00:04:34.04 God says He can wash us, 00:04:34.07\00:04:35.84 and justify us, and sanctify us, 00:04:35.87\00:04:39.11 and prepare us for an eternity with Him. 00:04:39.14\00:04:41.51 So let's pray and we'll jump in. 00:04:41.54\00:04:43.45 Ryan, you want to pray for us? Sure. Absolutely. 00:04:43.48\00:04:45.68 Our Father in heaven, Lord, 00:04:45.71\00:04:47.05 we take this time to dedicate it to you, Lord, 00:04:47.12\00:04:49.22 in the study of Your Word. 00:04:49.25\00:04:51.09 And it would be irresponsible of us, Lord, 00:04:51.12\00:04:52.79 to not first come to You humbly 00:04:52.82\00:04:54.86 and ask for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit 00:04:54.89\00:04:56.76 into our hearts and minds at this hour. 00:04:56.83\00:04:58.96 Lord, as we take on this very precious 00:04:58.99\00:05:00.90 and as pastor said, 00:05:00.93\00:05:02.33 somewhat misunderstood topic in the Christian world. 00:05:02.36\00:05:05.47 Lord, I pray that You give us understanding. 00:05:05.50\00:05:07.90 Help us to understand what Your Word is saying. 00:05:07.94\00:05:10.31 Give us the spiritual mind of Jesus. 00:05:10.34\00:05:12.67 That is we discuss and we talk 00:05:12.71\00:05:14.41 about these important things in Scripture. 00:05:14.44\00:05:18.01 Lord, I pray that the people that are watching, 00:05:18.05\00:05:20.02 those at home, those around the world, 00:05:20.05\00:05:21.82 wherever they're listening to this, 00:05:21.85\00:05:23.18 may they be blessed, 00:05:23.22\00:05:24.55 may the church be edified, Lord, 00:05:24.59\00:05:26.09 and may we come to a better understanding 00:05:26.12\00:05:28.26 of who Jesus Christ is and His will for our life. 00:05:28.29\00:05:31.29 We praise You, Lord, and we thank You as always. 00:05:31.33\00:05:34.00 And we ask this in Jesus' holy name, amen. 00:05:34.03\00:05:36.43 Amen. 00:05:36.46\00:05:37.80 So let's just start off 00:05:37.83\00:05:39.17 with a biblical definition of sanctification. 00:05:39.20\00:05:40.67 Someone's watching and says, 00:05:40.74\00:05:42.07 "I don't even know what sanctification is, 00:05:42.10\00:05:43.71 or maybe the way my church teaches it." 00:05:43.74\00:05:46.31 It might not be in line with what the Word of God says. 00:05:46.34\00:05:48.58 So what does the Bible say? 00:05:48.61\00:05:50.08 What's the definition of sanctification? 00:05:50.15\00:05:51.71 Well, it's beautiful when you look at it 00:05:51.75\00:05:54.78 because sanctification is not only a process, 00:05:54.82\00:05:59.82 but it's an immediate act. 00:05:59.85\00:06:01.92 It's seen in both ways, and I'll give you an example. 00:06:01.96\00:06:04.23 But to summarize it, 00:06:04.26\00:06:05.59 I looked at various dictionaries 00:06:05.63\00:06:06.96 one that I really settled with 00:06:07.00\00:06:08.63 was one from the Entenmann's dictionary. 00:06:08.66\00:06:12.33 It's a common dictionary, 00:06:12.37\00:06:15.00 common in the sense that it's used 00:06:15.04\00:06:16.37 across the levels of the Christian world. 00:06:16.40\00:06:18.94 But it says, "The act or end process 00:06:18.97\00:06:24.28 of making something or someone clean and holy." 00:06:24.31\00:06:27.42 That's right. 00:06:27.45\00:06:28.78 The act and process of making 00:06:28.82\00:06:30.59 someone or something clean and holy. 00:06:30.62\00:06:32.89 That's the simple processes. 00:06:32.92\00:06:34.69 It says, "In Christian theology, 00:06:34.72\00:06:36.09 sanctification is usually understood as an act 00:06:36.12\00:06:39.09 or process subsequent to salvation, 00:06:39.13\00:06:42.60 which renders the believer holy in fact. 00:06:42.63\00:06:46.87 I like that. So holy in fact. 00:06:46.94\00:06:48.90 Right. You are holy. 00:06:48.94\00:06:50.31 So when the Bible says, 00:06:50.34\00:06:51.67 "Be therefore holy 00:06:51.71\00:06:53.04 as your Father in heaven as holy." 00:06:53.07\00:06:54.41 He declared you holy, 00:06:54.44\00:06:55.78 and then but now he's, he declared you holy, 00:06:55.81\00:06:59.48 but now he's gonna make you give you a holy life. 00:06:59.51\00:07:02.82 Okay, there's one thing to be separated for holiness. 00:07:02.85\00:07:06.69 Now, it's like you buy a brand new tool. 00:07:06.76\00:07:08.49 So you just bought a brand new shovel. 00:07:08.52\00:07:11.49 And you've never used one before. 00:07:11.53\00:07:12.86 Well, the shovel is brand new, 00:07:12.89\00:07:14.86 but now you got to learn how to use it. 00:07:14.90\00:07:16.77 So the purchasing of the shovel is justification, 00:07:16.80\00:07:20.84 the learning how to use the shovel 00:07:20.87\00:07:23.14 and become good at it, 00:07:23.17\00:07:25.41 almost to the point where it's second nature 00:07:25.44\00:07:27.84 is sanctification. 00:07:27.88\00:07:29.21 Amen. It's a continual thing. 00:07:29.24\00:07:30.75 Could I give a couple of examples? 00:07:30.78\00:07:32.11 Please. 00:07:32.15\00:07:33.48 You know sanctification. 00:07:33.52\00:07:35.15 I would, as you pointed out, 00:07:35.18\00:07:36.52 all have sinned and fallen short 00:07:36.55\00:07:37.89 of the glory of God. 00:07:37.92\00:07:39.49 But when we go to 1 John 1:9, let's go there first. 00:07:39.52\00:07:42.56 I'm going to show the... 00:07:42.59\00:07:43.93 I'm going to show this verse is a verse that is, 00:07:43.96\00:07:46.83 is often the one we cite. 00:07:46.90\00:07:49.33 It's like if the person got caught 00:07:49.36\00:07:50.70 and they're guilty of a crime, they just run to this verse. 00:07:50.77\00:07:54.64 If we confess our sins, 00:07:54.67\00:07:56.00 He is faithful and just to forgive us 00:07:56.04\00:07:57.41 of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, 00:07:57.44\00:07:59.34 but they missed the process, 00:07:59.37\00:08:01.31 because this verse is the immediate 00:08:01.34\00:08:02.84 and the continual contained in one. 00:08:02.88\00:08:05.61 Oh, good. How do you say that? 00:08:05.65\00:08:07.02 It's the immediate, 00:08:07.05\00:08:08.38 He is faithful and just to forgive us 00:08:08.42\00:08:09.98 our sins that are justification. 00:08:10.02\00:08:11.72 Immediate. Good. 00:08:11.75\00:08:13.19 And to cleanse us 00:08:13.22\00:08:14.76 is sanctification from all unrighteousness. 00:08:14.79\00:08:17.13 I like that. That's beautiful. 00:08:17.16\00:08:18.49 So it's both together. 00:08:18.53\00:08:20.00 See, so forgiveness or justification 00:08:20.03\00:08:23.67 is the immediate act of pardon. 00:08:23.70\00:08:26.63 But it has to be followed by the sanctifying process 00:08:26.67\00:08:30.61 of reversing the effect of the sin. 00:08:30.64\00:08:34.18 An alcoholic, how long have they been in out, 00:08:34.21\00:08:36.28 what makes an alcoholic somebody who had incessantly, 00:08:36.31\00:08:38.31 repetitively drank alcohol. 00:08:38.35\00:08:41.05 It leaves an impact. 00:08:41.08\00:08:42.85 So now they're forgiven of the act. 00:08:42.88\00:08:45.29 But they're now cleansed and you know the body. 00:08:45.32\00:08:47.89 My mom was a smoker for many, many years 00:08:47.92\00:08:49.49 and an alcoholic before she knew the Lord. 00:08:49.52\00:08:52.39 I wasn't raised with her, but she smoked 00:08:52.43\00:08:54.23 two to three packs of cigarettes a day. 00:08:54.30\00:08:56.03 And that was her out 00:08:56.06\00:08:57.40 because of abandoning her children. 00:08:57.47\00:08:59.57 But when she gave her life to the Lord and stop smoking, 00:08:59.60\00:09:02.27 I even could tell her voice 00:09:02.30\00:09:03.71 when I met her for the first time, 00:09:03.74\00:09:05.07 her voice had lightened. 00:09:05.11\00:09:06.44 And she lost the desire 00:09:06.47\00:09:07.98 for the appeal to smoking and alcohol altogether. 00:09:08.01\00:09:10.95 And the body which is naturally made by God, 00:09:10.98\00:09:13.92 to begin to restore itself, 00:09:13.95\00:09:17.19 the body began to sanctify itself, 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.45 getting rid of all the ill affect, 00:09:19.49\00:09:21.39 all the impact. 00:09:21.42\00:09:22.86 So here it is. 00:09:22.89\00:09:24.76 So we don't, we just don't confess our sin. 00:09:24.79\00:09:29.00 But notice, He says 00:09:29.03\00:09:30.57 He is faithful and just to forgive. 00:09:30.60\00:09:32.30 Now let me add 00:09:32.33\00:09:33.67 the sanctifying process to confess. 00:09:33.74\00:09:35.47 Go to Proverbs 28:13, 00:09:35.50\00:09:37.34 because we confess that says, "Okay, I did it. 00:09:37.41\00:09:40.98 Lord, please forgive me, you confess. 00:09:41.01\00:09:43.55 But if you just want to be declared just, 00:09:43.58\00:09:46.95 then that's not all the Lord wants to do. 00:09:47.02\00:09:49.75 Proverbs 28:13, and you see the word again. 00:09:49.78\00:09:53.59 There's something else we have to do 00:09:53.66\00:09:55.26 for the process of sanctification 00:09:55.29\00:09:56.83 to be important. 00:09:56.86\00:09:58.43 "He who covers his sin will not prosper. 00:09:58.46\00:10:01.83 But whoever confesses and" what else? 00:10:01.86\00:10:04.73 "Forsakes them will have mercy." 00:10:04.77\00:10:07.44 Somebody asked me, "What does forsake mean? 00:10:07.47\00:10:09.50 To abandon. 00:10:09.54\00:10:11.04 That sin needs to die for lack of oxygen. 00:10:11.07\00:10:14.28 That sin needs to be rendered ineffective. 00:10:14.31\00:10:17.15 That's where we come to the point 00:10:17.18\00:10:18.51 of laying aside every weight 00:10:18.55\00:10:21.15 and the sin that so easily besets us 00:10:21.18\00:10:23.05 because here's the process and I throw to you next. 00:10:23.08\00:10:25.42 If we don't lay that aside, 00:10:25.45\00:10:27.46 then we are only laying it aside for a convenient time. 00:10:27.49\00:10:30.63 Some people become great Christians on Friday. 00:10:30.66\00:10:34.93 You know, I'm talking about an Adventist. 00:10:34.96\00:10:37.47 Some Christians that keep Sunday 00:10:37.50\00:10:39.00 become great Christians on Saturday night, 00:10:39.03\00:10:41.60 they go to church on Sunday. 00:10:41.64\00:10:42.97 Yes, I've been smoking a week, drinking a week. 00:10:43.00\00:10:44.94 That's why it's ridiculous to belong to a church 00:10:44.97\00:10:47.51 that supports the intoxication of the body 00:10:47.58\00:10:54.52 while saying you're a Christian, 00:10:54.55\00:10:55.98 because the Lord 00:10:56.02\00:10:57.39 doesn't want to just sanctify us, 00:10:57.42\00:10:58.82 He wants to sanctify our body, 00:10:58.85\00:11:01.09 as well as our mind 00:11:01.12\00:11:02.46 to make us a living sacrifice holy and acceptable 00:11:02.49\00:11:06.36 is what sanctification talks about. 00:11:06.39\00:11:08.73 Ryan? Yeah, absolutely. 00:11:08.76\00:11:10.10 I just, you know, 00:11:10.17\00:11:11.50 pastor did a beautiful job here. 00:11:11.53\00:11:12.87 I want to give a couple of texts 00:11:12.90\00:11:14.24 when we clearly see in Scripture, 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.24 a clear biblical definition within the text of Scripture 00:11:16.27\00:11:20.71 that spells out or defines what sanctification is. 00:11:20.78\00:11:23.48 Leviticus 20:7-8. 00:11:23.55\00:11:27.22 I'll just read it here, it says, 00:11:27.25\00:11:28.58 "Consecrate yourselves therefore..." 00:11:28.62\00:11:30.22 Leviticus 20:7-8. 00:11:30.29\00:11:33.59 Okay, this is, you don't think of Leviticus as you know 00:11:33.66\00:11:36.96 giving you a text that might clearly define 00:11:37.03\00:11:39.26 or tell us what sanctification is. 00:11:39.29\00:11:42.03 But if you read the context clues, 00:11:42.06\00:11:43.80 and I was always taught that in school, 00:11:43.87\00:11:45.60 and I tend to do that now when I study, 00:11:45.63\00:11:47.14 I look for little words in a passage or in a text, 00:11:47.17\00:11:50.14 a series of texts that clearly spell out 00:11:50.21\00:11:54.01 or show within that text what it is I'm looking for, 00:11:54.08\00:11:56.85 and this is a good example. 00:11:56.88\00:11:58.21 So Leviticus 20:7-8. 00:11:58.25\00:12:00.22 It says, "Consecrate yourselves therefore..." 00:12:00.25\00:12:02.45 So notice will automatically consecrate yourselves. 00:12:02.48\00:12:05.12 There's a certain amount of consecration 00:12:05.15\00:12:07.79 that must occur in the process of sanctification 00:12:07.82\00:12:10.53 and we'll talk about that more in a little bit. 00:12:10.56\00:12:12.19 It says, "And be holy," okay? 00:12:12.23\00:12:15.86 "I am the Lord your God, 00:12:15.90\00:12:17.57 and you shall keep my statutes and perform them." 00:12:17.60\00:12:20.04 And then notice this closing part. 00:12:20.07\00:12:21.40 "I am the Lord who sanctifies you." 00:12:21.44\00:12:24.21 And we're going to probably come back 00:12:24.24\00:12:25.57 to this question in just a moment, 00:12:25.61\00:12:26.98 which is, who does the sanctifying? 00:12:27.01\00:12:29.44 We clearly, obviously the Bible says 00:12:29.48\00:12:31.48 that the Lord does the sanctifying. 00:12:31.51\00:12:33.25 And the word for sanctify here 00:12:33.28\00:12:34.62 and the general word for sanctify in the Hebrew 00:12:34.65\00:12:36.79 is the word qodesh, 00:12:36.82\00:12:38.62 which means to be made clean 00:12:38.65\00:12:40.36 as pastor beautifully brought out 00:12:40.39\00:12:41.79 a few minutes ago, to be purified, 00:12:41.82\00:12:44.73 to be set apart for a holy use. 00:12:44.76\00:12:47.30 Okay? 00:12:47.33\00:12:48.76 Another text that comes to mind is 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8, 00:12:48.80\00:12:52.97 okay, and we're probably going to revisit 00:12:53.00\00:12:54.44 some of these texts through this. 00:12:54.47\00:12:56.27 This is 1 Thessalonians 4:3-8. 00:12:56.30\00:12:59.84 And I'll probably just read verses 3 and 4, 00:12:59.87\00:13:01.58 and then 7 and 8. 00:13:01.61\00:13:03.01 But notice what it says here beginning of verse 3, it says, 00:13:03.04\00:13:05.05 "For this is the will of God." 00:13:05.08\00:13:07.12 And so, I just want to pause there for a moment 00:13:07.15\00:13:08.48 because we're going to talk about this in a few moments. 00:13:08.52\00:13:11.02 But the importance of sanctification, 00:13:11.05\00:13:12.69 not only does the Bible define what sanctification is, 00:13:12.72\00:13:15.32 but it clearly spells out 00:13:15.36\00:13:16.73 the importance of sanctification. 00:13:16.76\00:13:18.33 I grew up in a church 00:13:18.36\00:13:19.86 in a series of churches actually, 00:13:19.89\00:13:21.23 because I visited and studied 00:13:21.26\00:13:22.90 with many different Christian denominations. 00:13:22.93\00:13:24.97 And in the gospel 00:13:25.00\00:13:26.53 that was taught to me growing up, 00:13:26.57\00:13:28.37 there was no room for sanctification. 00:13:28.40\00:13:30.31 Sanctification was kind of a, you know, back seat type of, 00:13:30.34\00:13:33.78 you know, reality or a back seat 00:13:33.81\00:13:36.14 secondhand concept. 00:13:36.18\00:13:37.91 You know, if you are sanctified by the Lord, 00:13:37.95\00:13:39.41 that's a great thing, 00:13:39.45\00:13:40.82 but justification was made 00:13:40.85\00:13:42.32 more important than sanctification. 00:13:42.35\00:13:43.89 But notice here, 00:13:43.92\00:13:45.25 Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4 00:13:45.29\00:13:46.76 beginning with verse 3, 00:13:46.79\00:13:48.12 " For this is the will of God, 00:13:48.16\00:13:50.03 your sanctification: 00:13:50.06\00:13:51.79 that you should abstain from sexual immorality, 00:13:51.83\00:13:54.53 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel 00:13:54.56\00:13:57.57 in sanctification and honor." 00:13:57.60\00:14:00.04 Now notice verse 7 and 8. 00:14:00.07\00:14:02.10 It says, "For God did not call us to uncleanness, 00:14:02.14\00:14:06.68 but in holiness. 00:14:06.71\00:14:08.88 So notice the context closing in, 00:14:08.91\00:14:10.65 "Uncleanness, but in holiness. 00:14:10.68\00:14:13.92 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, 00:14:13.95\00:14:18.42 who has also given us His Holy Spirit." 00:14:18.45\00:14:21.99 Now that word holiness, 00:14:22.02\00:14:23.36 he's not called us to uncleanness, 00:14:23.43\00:14:24.79 but in contrast to that holiness. 00:14:24.83\00:14:26.70 Holiness in the original Greek here 00:14:26.73\00:14:28.96 is the word hagiasmos, 00:14:29.00\00:14:31.27 hagiasmos which basically means to purify 00:14:31.30\00:14:34.74 or to sanctify, to be made holy. 00:14:34.77\00:14:37.04 And then the last text 00:14:37.11\00:14:38.44 that kind of pulls this together, again, 00:14:38.47\00:14:39.81 speaking of defining what the Bible says 00:14:39.84\00:14:42.28 about sanctification, Romans 6:19 and 22. 00:14:42.31\00:14:47.12 And again, like I said earlier, 00:14:47.15\00:14:48.48 we'll probably read 00:14:48.52\00:14:49.85 some of these again in the study, 00:14:49.88\00:14:51.22 because there's so many great concepts. 00:14:51.25\00:14:52.92 Romans 6:19-22. 00:14:52.95\00:14:54.99 The Bible says, 00:14:55.02\00:14:56.46 "I speak in human terms 00:14:56.49\00:14:58.06 because of the weakness of your flesh." 00:14:58.09\00:15:00.53 So notice the terms that he's bringing up, 00:15:00.60\00:15:02.16 the weakness of the flesh. 00:15:02.20\00:15:04.20 "For just as you present your members as slaves of, " 00:15:04.27\00:15:08.04 there it is again, "uncleanness and of, " 00:15:08.07\00:15:11.74 and I throws in another one, 00:15:11.77\00:15:13.11 "lawlessness, leading to more lawlessness." 00:15:13.14\00:15:17.88 So now, 00:15:17.91\00:15:19.25 here's the contrasting thoughts. 00:15:19.28\00:15:20.62 So now present your members as slaves of righteousness for 00:15:20.65\00:15:25.89 and there it is, hagiasmos, holiness, sanctification. 00:15:25.92\00:15:30.93 And then verse 22, you got to read that one too. 00:15:30.96\00:15:33.23 "But now having been set free from sin." 00:15:33.26\00:15:36.67 What is sanctification? 00:15:36.70\00:15:38.03 What's the process of sanctification? 00:15:38.07\00:15:39.80 And we're going to define that a little bit more. 00:15:39.83\00:15:42.17 It means to be set free from sin. 00:15:42.20\00:15:44.47 So right here, he says, 00:15:44.51\00:15:45.84 but now having been set free from sin, 00:15:45.87\00:15:47.64 and having become slaves of God, 00:15:47.68\00:15:50.25 you have your fruit of and there it is, again, 00:15:50.28\00:15:53.08 hagiasmos, holiness, sanctification and the end, 00:15:53.11\00:15:57.39 notice this, everlasting life. 00:15:57.42\00:15:59.72 So it's clearly defined in Scripture 00:15:59.75\00:16:01.26 that not only is sanctification important, 00:16:01.29\00:16:03.53 but God makes it very clear as to what sanctification is. 00:16:03.56\00:16:06.09 It's the process of purification 00:16:06.13\00:16:08.23 of making one holy, 00:16:08.26\00:16:09.83 setting one apart from the world, 00:16:09.86\00:16:12.00 the lust of the world, the pride of life to be holy, 00:16:12.03\00:16:15.00 and to replicate the character of God. 00:16:15.04\00:16:16.74 Amen, that's beautiful. Thank you, both of you. 00:16:16.81\00:16:18.97 You know, it's incredible to me 00:16:19.01\00:16:20.38 that sanctification 00:16:20.41\00:16:21.74 is the will of God for our life, 00:16:21.78\00:16:23.11 he desires that and with that justification 00:16:23.14\00:16:25.98 in 1 John 1:9 as you talked about, 00:16:26.01\00:16:27.78 Pastor John, connected with the forgiveness 00:16:27.82\00:16:30.42 with the cleansing, 00:16:30.49\00:16:31.89 with being set free as it were from sin. 00:16:31.92\00:16:35.49 So we already talked, you touched on it, Pastor John, 00:16:35.52\00:16:37.26 the connection 00:16:37.33\00:16:38.66 between justification and sanctification. 00:16:38.69\00:16:40.40 But what if someone's saying, 00:16:40.43\00:16:41.83 is sanctification really necessary for salvation? 00:16:41.86\00:16:45.07 Is sanctification connected with salvation? 00:16:45.10\00:16:48.00 What would you say to that? 00:16:48.04\00:16:49.37 I would say definitely, and here's the reason why, 00:16:49.40\00:16:51.61 because there's a process. 00:16:51.64\00:16:53.11 Now purification is one thing 00:16:53.14\00:16:54.84 but alienation is something altogether different 00:16:54.88\00:16:57.95 'cause alienation separates you. 00:16:57.98\00:17:00.72 Because remember now, sin separates, 00:17:00.75\00:17:02.72 your sin has separated you. 00:17:02.75\00:17:04.99 Righteousness separates. 00:17:05.02\00:17:07.56 Sin separates from God, 00:17:07.59\00:17:09.29 righteousness separates from sin. 00:17:09.32\00:17:12.59 So the power of sin is so affected humanity 00:17:12.63\00:17:15.13 that in their natural state, they are servants of sin. 00:17:15.16\00:17:19.37 So how do you become servants of righteousness? 00:17:19.40\00:17:22.07 Anybody that takes the job of a servant 00:17:22.10\00:17:24.21 has to learn the process. 00:17:24.24\00:17:26.07 Okay, carry this way. 00:17:26.11\00:17:27.58 Make sure you ask. 00:17:27.61\00:17:28.94 A servant is the life that you learn. 00:17:28.98\00:17:30.65 That's why Jesus said, 00:17:30.68\00:17:32.01 "I've come to serve not to be served." 00:17:32.05\00:17:34.68 But look at the four things 00:17:34.72\00:17:36.05 that makes sanctification necessary. 00:17:36.08\00:17:38.02 Sanctification purifies and alienates us 00:17:38.05\00:17:40.96 from the domination of sin. 00:17:40.99\00:17:43.63 Oh, that's good. I like that. 00:17:43.66\00:17:44.99 Also sanctification destroys 00:17:45.03\00:17:46.70 the corrupt propensities of our fallen nature. 00:17:46.73\00:17:49.73 You got to do something over and over, 00:17:49.76\00:17:51.27 somebody says, like, 00:17:51.30\00:17:52.63 I've read the story where in the days gone by 00:17:52.67\00:17:55.90 maybe in the 1600s, 1500s, 1400s, 00:17:55.94\00:17:57.84 there was a thought 00:17:57.87\00:17:59.21 that people that were left handed 00:17:59.24\00:18:00.58 were wicked. 00:18:00.61\00:18:01.94 Okay. 00:18:01.98\00:18:03.35 I'm crawling under the table now. 00:18:03.38\00:18:04.71 I'm left handed. 00:18:04.75\00:18:06.08 And so what happened, 00:18:06.11\00:18:07.45 people would tie their children's hands 00:18:07.48\00:18:09.15 if they left handed 00:18:09.18\00:18:10.52 and forced them to learn right handed. 00:18:10.59\00:18:12.22 Within a matter of time, 00:18:12.25\00:18:13.96 they would learn how to be right handed. 00:18:13.99\00:18:15.82 Some basketball coaches 00:18:15.86\00:18:17.33 to develop the left handed game, 00:18:17.36\00:18:19.29 they say no, tie, put your right hand behind, 00:18:19.33\00:18:22.13 learn how to dribble, shoot, layup with your left hand, 00:18:22.16\00:18:24.87 in and out, of course, well, you know, in the NBA. 00:18:24.90\00:18:26.47 I did it all the time. 00:18:26.50\00:18:27.84 A dangerous player is the guy 00:18:27.87\00:18:29.20 that could shoot left and right, okay? 00:18:29.24\00:18:31.47 You know, Kyrie Irving, okay, dexterous. 00:18:31.51\00:18:34.01 So it has to destroy the corrupt 00:18:34.08\00:18:36.34 or the natural propensities 00:18:36.38\00:18:38.55 and alienate us from the fallen things 00:18:38.58\00:18:40.65 that we do naturally. 00:18:40.72\00:18:42.45 Thirdly, sanctification rectifies 00:18:42.48\00:18:44.79 or corrects our affections and inclinations. 00:18:44.82\00:18:48.26 That's powerful to me 00:18:48.29\00:18:49.62 because correcting meaning is recalibrating. 00:18:49.66\00:18:51.99 We are naturally out of line with God. 00:18:52.03\00:18:54.20 But sanctification says, wait a minute, 00:18:54.23\00:18:55.56 I'm going to bring you in line with God. 00:18:55.60\00:18:57.10 So I'm going to rectify the factors in your life 00:18:57.17\00:18:59.53 and watch this, it doesn't do it instantly, 00:18:59.57\00:19:01.84 we are instantly accepted 00:19:01.87\00:19:03.34 into the process, justification. 00:19:03.41\00:19:05.54 But then the Lord is saying, you're out of line, 00:19:05.57\00:19:07.18 you're out of line, I gotta line you up. 00:19:07.21\00:19:08.81 So purification rectifies or corrects 00:19:08.84\00:19:12.48 the affections and inclinations. 00:19:12.51\00:19:13.85 And then fourthly, 00:19:13.92\00:19:16.15 sanctification brings the entire nature 00:19:16.18\00:19:19.32 into subjection to the will of God 00:19:19.35\00:19:21.26 so that we may be properly called 00:19:21.29\00:19:24.89 servants of righteousness. 00:19:24.93\00:19:27.70 So all those processes purifies and alienates 00:19:27.73\00:19:30.47 from the domination of sin. 00:19:30.50\00:19:31.93 So after a while 00:19:31.97\00:19:33.34 when you continue in the process, 00:19:33.37\00:19:34.70 after a while you say, 00:19:34.74\00:19:36.27 I don't even remember what it was like to smoke. 00:19:36.30\00:19:38.64 Matter of fact, the very smell of that just irritates me. 00:19:38.67\00:19:42.31 The very thought of having done that just sickens me 00:19:42.34\00:19:47.12 because you have been lined up 00:19:47.15\00:19:49.08 with what is right all the time. 00:19:49.12\00:19:51.29 And I'll give you one example. 00:19:51.32\00:19:53.96 Look at 1 John 3:1-3, 00:19:53.99\00:19:56.06 one of my favorite passages in the Bible. 00:19:56.09\00:19:58.66 1 John 3:1-3, this is, 00:19:58.69\00:20:01.23 this brings into beautiful clarification, 00:20:01.26\00:20:04.30 what this process is all about. 00:20:04.33\00:20:06.40 Now we love the verse 1 and 2, 00:20:06.43\00:20:08.07 but verse 3 as there cannot be ignored. 00:20:08.10\00:20:11.11 "Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, 00:20:11.14\00:20:14.71 that we should be called the children of God. 00:20:14.74\00:20:16.95 Therefore the world does not know us 00:20:16.98\00:20:18.48 because it did not know Him." 00:20:18.51\00:20:20.05 So here's the question I'll throw out there 00:20:20.12\00:20:21.45 and I'll answer in just a moment. 00:20:21.48\00:20:22.98 How does a person who is a sinner 00:20:23.02\00:20:24.35 get to the point 00:20:24.39\00:20:25.72 where the world can't even recognize you? 00:20:25.75\00:20:27.39 Hmm. 00:20:27.46\00:20:28.79 There's a change. Watch this. 00:20:28.82\00:20:31.26 Verse 2, "Beloved, now we are children of God, 00:20:31.29\00:20:34.66 and it has not yet been revealed, 00:20:34.70\00:20:36.77 " because you're in the process, 00:20:36.80\00:20:38.37 "what we shall be but we know in the assurance 00:20:38.40\00:20:41.27 that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, 00:20:41.30\00:20:43.20 for we shall see Him as He is." 00:20:43.24\00:20:44.94 We love to stop there, 00:20:44.97\00:20:46.31 but it calls on an action on our part. 00:20:46.34\00:20:48.11 That's right. 00:20:48.14\00:20:49.48 "However, everyone who has this hope in Him 00:20:49.51\00:20:53.35 that is in Christ 00:20:53.42\00:20:54.75 purifies himself just as he is pure." 00:20:54.78\00:20:57.59 Why do I have to purify myself if I'm pure? 00:20:57.62\00:21:00.46 The Lord told Peter that not just my feet 00:21:00.49\00:21:02.32 but my head only he said, Peter, you're already clean. 00:21:02.36\00:21:05.39 I just need to wash your feet. 00:21:05.43\00:21:06.90 Relax. 00:21:06.93\00:21:08.26 And here's my explanation. 00:21:08.30\00:21:09.63 Now, I've given the John Lomacang translation, 00:21:09.66\00:21:13.00 here it is, to those three verses. 00:21:13.03\00:21:15.67 Because I love you, I justified and forgave you. 00:21:15.70\00:21:19.41 So you can now be called My child, from now on, 00:21:19.44\00:21:24.31 make choices to maintain your holy connection 00:21:24.35\00:21:27.22 to your Holy Father. 00:21:27.25\00:21:28.88 When you do that, 00:21:28.92\00:21:30.29 the world won't be able to identify you 00:21:30.32\00:21:31.92 because you will look less like the world 00:21:31.95\00:21:33.86 and more like me. 00:21:33.89\00:21:35.49 If you keep making pure choices, eventually, 00:21:35.52\00:21:39.13 you won't recognize who you were. 00:21:39.16\00:21:41.33 Don't be discouraged, it takes time. 00:21:41.36\00:21:43.87 But since I am the one doing the cleaning, 00:21:43.90\00:21:46.33 I am so complete in what I do that when you see Me, 00:21:46.37\00:21:49.54 you will look just like Me. 00:21:49.57\00:21:51.97 That is John Lomacang translation. 00:21:52.01\00:21:53.68 That's beautiful. Wonderful. 00:21:53.71\00:21:56.48 I can't even speak right now. 00:21:56.51\00:21:57.85 That is beautiful, 00:21:57.88\00:21:59.21 the love of our Father to take us, 00:21:59.25\00:22:01.45 and to clean us, and to change us, 00:22:01.48\00:22:04.49 and to make us look like Him. 00:22:04.52\00:22:06.02 Now that brings a question 00:22:06.05\00:22:07.79 to my mind when you were talking. 00:22:07.82\00:22:09.46 We're kind of jumping forward here. 00:22:09.49\00:22:12.36 How much is our part 00:22:12.39\00:22:13.90 because it says 00:22:13.93\00:22:15.26 everyone who has this hope in Him 00:22:15.30\00:22:16.63 purifies himself as he is pure. 00:22:16.67\00:22:18.70 So what is my role to play in this sanctification process 00:22:18.73\00:22:23.17 and what is God's part? 00:22:23.20\00:22:24.54 Because clearly, 00:22:24.57\00:22:25.91 my righteousness is filthy rags. 00:22:25.94\00:22:27.28 That's right. 00:22:27.31\00:22:28.64 And I'm just being honest, I tried for years to be good, 00:22:28.68\00:22:30.85 and it certainly didn't work. 00:22:30.88\00:22:32.48 So I know that me just gritting my teeth 00:22:32.51\00:22:35.38 or trying harder, it's not going to purify me. 00:22:35.42\00:22:37.89 Right. 00:22:37.92\00:22:39.25 since I spoke, I'll give Ryan a shot at this one. 00:22:39.29\00:22:40.66 No, absolutely, 00:22:40.69\00:22:42.02 and you can chime in on this as well. 00:22:42.06\00:22:43.39 You know, this has been something 00:22:43.43\00:22:44.76 I've struggled with for years. 00:22:44.79\00:22:46.56 Just as you just mentioned, you know, 00:22:46.59\00:22:48.63 growing up in a Christian, 00:22:48.66\00:22:50.00 very conservative Christian home, 00:22:50.07\00:22:51.57 one can easily adopt a, 00:22:51.60\00:22:54.30 almost a legalistic mentality to the gospel, 00:22:54.34\00:22:57.34 especially when we read certain texts 00:22:57.41\00:22:59.27 where God very clearly demands righteousness from His people, 00:22:59.31\00:23:04.15 not as a sinister, you know, dictatorship but more or less, 00:23:04.18\00:23:07.65 God's saying, look, 00:23:07.68\00:23:09.02 if you're going to inherit my kingdom, 00:23:09.05\00:23:10.79 these are My ways. 00:23:10.82\00:23:12.49 And so, it's very easy for one 00:23:12.52\00:23:14.36 to adopt a works approach to salvation 00:23:14.39\00:23:17.79 to where it very much becomes. 00:23:17.83\00:23:20.70 And this is where 00:23:20.73\00:23:22.06 the sanctification comes in what is my part? 00:23:22.10\00:23:23.97 What is God's part? 00:23:24.00\00:23:25.80 Back in the day 00:23:25.83\00:23:27.17 I used to have this mentality of, 00:23:27.24\00:23:28.57 well, it was 50% my work and 50% God's work, 00:23:28.60\00:23:31.94 you know, I've got to meet Him halfway, 00:23:31.97\00:23:33.41 you know, He's done, 00:23:33.48\00:23:34.81 He's already done all the work on the cross, right? 00:23:34.84\00:23:36.75 The least I can do is try to do something 00:23:36.78\00:23:38.78 to help Him clean me up, right? 00:23:38.81\00:23:40.75 But the truth of the matter is, the clear answer is, 00:23:40.82\00:23:43.59 it's 100% God's work. 00:23:43.62\00:23:46.02 Now, that doesn't mean we don't do something 00:23:46.05\00:23:48.12 or that there's not a response that we give. 00:23:48.16\00:23:50.86 But as far as the cleansing act of sanctification in our life, 00:23:50.93\00:23:54.56 the clear answer is, it's 100% God's work in us. 00:23:54.60\00:23:58.33 Let me give you 00:23:58.37\00:23:59.70 a couple of scriptural examples for this. 00:23:59.73\00:24:01.07 Again, I read this earlier, 00:24:01.10\00:24:02.44 I started with this, Leviticus 20:7-8. 00:24:02.47\00:24:05.31 And the ending part of that is what I want to, 00:24:05.34\00:24:07.68 I want to emphasize, but I'll just read it through. 00:24:07.71\00:24:10.48 Leviticus 20:7-8, 00:24:10.55\00:24:12.38 again says consecrate yourselves, 00:24:12.41\00:24:14.02 therefore, okay, so right there 00:24:14.05\00:24:15.62 automatically somebody says, 00:24:15.65\00:24:16.99 "Well, I can't consecrate myself. 00:24:17.02\00:24:18.59 So obviously, that must mean something else." Right? 00:24:18.62\00:24:20.79 Well, consecration is different. 00:24:20.86\00:24:22.69 They're a little bit different 00:24:22.72\00:24:24.16 than you doing the work yourself in you 00:24:24.23\00:24:26.56 to clean you up, right? 00:24:26.59\00:24:28.06 Consecration is bringing your will 00:24:28.10\00:24:31.37 in submission to God, okay? 00:24:31.40\00:24:33.07 And we're gonna isolate that 00:24:33.10\00:24:34.44 and talk about that in just a moment. 00:24:34.47\00:24:35.80 But consecrate yourself therefore and be holy. 00:24:35.84\00:24:38.44 Well, Ryan, I can't be holy. 00:24:38.47\00:24:40.48 Only God can be holy, that is true. 00:24:40.51\00:24:42.71 But God wants to be holy in you and through you. 00:24:42.74\00:24:45.61 And so it goes on to say, I am the Lord your God, 00:24:45.65\00:24:48.98 and you shall keep My statutes. 00:24:49.02\00:24:51.12 Wait, Pastor, I've been told many times, 00:24:51.15\00:24:53.79 I can't keep the statutes of the Lord, 00:24:53.86\00:24:55.56 I can't keep the commandments of God. 00:24:55.59\00:24:57.53 You're right, in and of ourselves, we cannot, 00:24:57.56\00:25:00.00 but God can will and do His good work in us, 00:25:00.03\00:25:03.87 so that it's Him doing the work through us, 00:25:03.90\00:25:06.43 not ourselves. 00:25:06.47\00:25:07.80 But then notice this last part and perform them, 00:25:07.84\00:25:10.31 well, I can't perform them. 00:25:10.34\00:25:11.71 That's correct. God performs them. 00:25:11.74\00:25:13.81 In fact, He confirms it in the last part of this verse. 00:25:13.88\00:25:16.54 I am the Lord who sanctifies you. 00:25:16.58\00:25:20.35 Now I want to tie a couple of more texts 00:25:20.42\00:25:22.35 to this first, 00:25:22.38\00:25:23.72 this is Philippians 1:6, my favorite verse. 00:25:23.79\00:25:25.25 Oh, yes. 00:25:25.29\00:25:26.62 This is my favorite verse in all Scripture. 00:25:26.65\00:25:27.99 This is the verse I hang on to, Lord, Ryan's a sinner, 00:25:28.02\00:25:31.16 and sometimes I can be rebellious. 00:25:31.19\00:25:32.99 And I hang on to this verse because I read this 00:25:33.03\00:25:35.30 and the Lord reminds me, son, 00:25:35.33\00:25:36.67 I've begun a good work in you 00:25:36.70\00:25:38.03 and I will complete it as long as you remain humble 00:25:38.07\00:25:40.47 and submit your will to me on a daily basis. 00:25:40.54\00:25:42.37 I love this scripture. 00:25:42.40\00:25:43.74 Philippians 1:6, 00:25:43.81\00:25:45.14 "Being confident of this very thing that He, 00:25:45.17\00:25:47.21 not me, 00:25:47.28\00:25:48.61 but He who has begun a good work in you 00:25:48.64\00:25:51.65 will complete." 00:25:51.68\00:25:53.01 So who's doing the completing? God. 00:25:53.05\00:25:54.68 Okay, He will complete it unto the day of Jesus Christ. 00:25:54.72\00:25:58.75 Now, I know that this is a Bible study. 00:25:58.79\00:26:00.99 But I want to read a quote 00:26:01.02\00:26:02.99 that I think summarizes 00:26:03.02\00:26:04.53 what I've just said very clearly. 00:26:04.56\00:26:06.26 While God does, 00:26:06.29\00:26:07.63 and I want to be very clear on this, 00:26:07.66\00:26:09.00 while God does 100% of the sanctifying work in us, 00:26:09.03\00:26:12.63 there is a part that we must do and that is surrender. 00:26:12.67\00:26:15.47 It's good. 00:26:15.50\00:26:16.84 You say, Ryan, but I can't surrender. 00:26:16.91\00:26:18.24 That's not true. 00:26:18.27\00:26:19.61 If we couldn't surrender, then we can't be saved, 00:26:19.64\00:26:22.94 that we must do something, 00:26:22.98\00:26:24.68 and the doing that we must do is submit. 00:26:24.71\00:26:27.98 Now, what do I mean by that? 00:26:28.02\00:26:29.35 I love this text that I'm about to read, 00:26:29.38\00:26:31.12 comes from Testimonies, volume 5, page 514, 00:26:31.15\00:26:34.19 that I believe summarizes 00:26:34.26\00:26:35.76 what we've just studied and read in Scripture. 00:26:35.79\00:26:37.83 Notice this, beautiful. 00:26:37.86\00:26:39.29 Again, Testimonies, volume 5, page 514. 00:26:39.33\00:26:43.03 "It is for you to yield up 00:26:43.06\00:26:45.20 your will to the will of Christ. 00:26:45.23\00:26:48.90 And as you do this, 00:26:48.94\00:26:51.27 God will immediately take possession." 00:26:51.31\00:26:53.91 I love what pastor said earlier. 00:26:53.98\00:26:55.41 There's an immediateness to this and, of course, 00:26:55.44\00:26:57.05 then there's a process. 00:26:57.08\00:26:58.41 So notice this, 00:26:58.45\00:26:59.78 "As you yield up your will to Christ and you do this, 00:26:59.81\00:27:02.75 God will immediately take possession 00:27:02.78\00:27:04.99 and work in you to will and do his good pleasure. 00:27:05.02\00:27:09.49 Your whole nature will then be brought 00:27:09.52\00:27:12.06 under the control of the Spirit of Christ." 00:27:12.09\00:27:15.66 I love that. 00:27:15.70\00:27:17.07 "And even your thoughts will be subject to Him. 00:27:17.10\00:27:20.47 You cannot control your impulses, your emotions, 00:27:20.54\00:27:24.54 as you may desire, but you can control the will." 00:27:24.57\00:27:28.41 Notice that. 00:27:28.44\00:27:29.78 We may not be able to control our emotions, 00:27:29.81\00:27:33.08 our impulses and our desires, but we can control the will. 00:27:33.11\00:27:36.79 In other words, our free will and our free choice. 00:27:36.82\00:27:38.62 We have a choice, right? That's right. 00:27:38.65\00:27:40.39 I love this next part, 00:27:40.46\00:27:41.79 "And you can make an entire change in your life 00:27:41.82\00:27:46.46 by yielding up your will to Christ, 00:27:46.49\00:27:48.60 your life will be hid with Christ in God 00:27:48.63\00:27:53.13 and allied to the power 00:27:53.17\00:27:54.84 which is above all principalities 00:27:54.87\00:27:57.41 and powers." 00:27:57.44\00:27:59.14 So that is our part. 00:27:59.17\00:28:00.58 What is the link 00:28:00.61\00:28:01.94 between our part and God's part? 00:28:01.98\00:28:03.35 We surrender our will to Him. 00:28:03.38\00:28:04.88 Lord, I give you myself today. That's right. 00:28:04.91\00:28:07.95 You know what does that beautiful prayer 00:28:07.98\00:28:09.32 that Christ taught us that you know, 00:28:09.35\00:28:10.69 our Father which art in heaven, 00:28:10.72\00:28:12.05 hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, 00:28:12.09\00:28:13.59 thy will be done on earth that is it is in heaven. 00:28:13.66\00:28:15.76 Give us this day our daily bread, 00:28:15.79\00:28:17.46 and lead us not, what is it? 00:28:17.53\00:28:19.16 Into temptation. 00:28:19.19\00:28:20.53 Notice how were you automatically work, 00:28:20.60\00:28:22.23 that the emphasis is on what God is doing, 00:28:22.26\00:28:24.27 not what I'm doing. 00:28:24.30\00:28:25.63 So we simply approach God and say, 00:28:25.67\00:28:27.00 "Lord, You have justified me." 00:28:27.04\00:28:29.34 And I'm going to probably come to this in a few minutes. 00:28:29.37\00:28:31.61 But the results of justification 00:28:31.64\00:28:34.41 is sanctification, because He has justified me, 00:28:34.44\00:28:37.58 now I yield up my will to Him, my free will to choose, 00:28:37.65\00:28:41.38 Lord, not my will as Christ prayed, 00:28:41.42\00:28:43.32 "Not My will, but Your will be done." 00:28:43.39\00:28:45.62 Amen. 00:28:45.65\00:28:46.99 Pastor John, I can see you anxious here 00:28:47.06\00:28:48.39 and I'm going to toss it back to you right now. 00:28:48.42\00:28:50.73 I want to focus specifically on and, Ryan, 00:28:50.76\00:28:53.16 we already did a wonderful foundation 00:28:53.19\00:28:55.73 with God's part and our part, 00:28:55.76\00:28:57.27 but let's focus on how we are sanctified 00:28:57.30\00:28:59.17 and you already talked about that, me surrendering. 00:28:59.20\00:29:01.50 And if I could be so bold that just jumping forward, 00:29:01.54\00:29:04.61 Pastor, in your response, however you want to share, 00:29:04.64\00:29:07.91 but if you could share Romans 7:17 sin in me, 00:29:07.94\00:29:14.22 it's not me but sin, 00:29:14.25\00:29:15.58 and then Galatians 2:20 Christ in me 00:29:15.62\00:29:17.42 somehow in your, I love or whatever you did. 00:29:17.49\00:29:19.42 I'm actually going there right now. 00:29:19.45\00:29:20.79 I love when you share that, 00:29:20.86\00:29:22.19 that just really minister to me. 00:29:22.22\00:29:23.56 I'm actually going there right now 00:29:23.59\00:29:24.93 actually because, hey, that's providential 00:29:24.96\00:29:27.13 because that's exactly where I'm headed right now. 00:29:27.20\00:29:29.33 It's a three stage process. 00:29:29.36\00:29:30.70 It starts with Romans 6:16. 00:29:30.77\00:29:36.00 Let's look at that together. 00:29:36.04\00:29:37.44 And this is the part and I know what you're saying. 00:29:37.51\00:29:40.21 The beautiful part about this 00:29:40.28\00:29:41.91 is I've said and I'll preface it 00:29:41.94\00:29:43.28 with the statement. 00:29:43.35\00:29:44.88 We don't choose what to do. 00:29:44.91\00:29:47.52 We choose who to serve. 00:29:47.55\00:29:49.48 Okay, that's very important, 00:29:49.52\00:29:51.35 because the servant in the Bible term 00:29:51.39\00:29:53.29 that is used is slave. 00:29:53.36\00:29:55.62 I've never seen a slave make a choice. 00:29:55.66\00:29:59.23 I have never seen a slave make a choice. 00:29:59.26\00:30:02.03 Now they may in their mind say, I don't want to do that, 00:30:02.06\00:30:04.80 but do it to master. 00:30:04.83\00:30:07.54 Okay, I'll do it. 00:30:07.57\00:30:08.90 Now that's the indentured servant 00:30:08.94\00:30:10.64 has, okay, I don't know. 00:30:10.71\00:30:12.24 But let's look at Romans 6:16. 00:30:12.27\00:30:14.51 And in here the two categories 00:30:14.54\00:30:15.98 that we are each confronted with. 00:30:16.01\00:30:18.75 Do you not know 00:30:18.78\00:30:20.12 that to whom you present yourselves 00:30:20.15\00:30:21.72 slaves to obey? 00:30:21.75\00:30:23.39 You are that one's slave whom you obey, 00:30:23.42\00:30:26.79 whether of sin leading to death, 00:30:26.86\00:30:29.72 or of obedience leading to righteousness. 00:30:29.76\00:30:33.09 In both cases, somebody is leading, 00:30:33.13\00:30:35.76 there's a leading to death or leading to righteousness. 00:30:35.80\00:30:38.53 What do you do? 00:30:38.57\00:30:39.90 You present yourself. That's right. 00:30:39.93\00:30:41.27 You present yourself, you say, 00:30:41.30\00:30:42.64 "Okay, this is who I want to serve." 00:30:42.67\00:30:45.11 And that's why the die daily is a sanctifying process. 00:30:45.14\00:30:47.78 You have to choose each day who you want, you have to die. 00:30:47.81\00:30:50.85 But now, this process of dying 00:30:50.88\00:30:55.12 comes out of the presenting aspect. 00:30:55.15\00:30:57.59 Not just say, I die daily, but how do you die daily? 00:30:57.62\00:31:00.19 A lot of people say, "Okay, I die daily. 00:31:00.26\00:31:01.59 How do I do that?" 00:31:01.62\00:31:02.96 You have to present yourself to one or the other. 00:31:02.99\00:31:04.79 Okay. Okay. 00:31:04.83\00:31:06.16 I'm going to serve you Lord today and Lord says, 00:31:06.19\00:31:08.23 "Okay, you want to serve me?" 00:31:08.26\00:31:09.60 Well, what did He tell Peter in John Chapter 21. 00:31:09.63\00:31:12.43 When you were young, you went where you want to go, 00:31:12.47\00:31:14.47 you did what you wanted to do, somebody else dress you, 00:31:14.50\00:31:16.47 but now, I mean, you dress yourself. 00:31:16.50\00:31:18.44 But now I'm in charge. 00:31:18.47\00:31:20.28 I'm going to send you where you don't want to go, 00:31:20.31\00:31:21.64 sanctification. 00:31:21.68\00:31:23.01 I'm going to dress you 00:31:23.04\00:31:24.38 maybe the way you don't want to be dressed. 00:31:24.41\00:31:25.75 And you're going to do what I've asked you to do. 00:31:25.78\00:31:27.12 That whole process of surrendering completely. 00:31:27.15\00:31:29.65 So the first step in sanctification is, 00:31:29.68\00:31:32.92 you've got to choose who to serve. 00:31:32.95\00:31:35.42 When you choose who to serve, 00:31:35.46\00:31:36.96 that person decides what you do. 00:31:37.03\00:31:40.23 For it's God who works in you both to will. 00:31:40.30\00:31:42.96 Now Romans 7:17, 00:31:43.00\00:31:45.40 and that's the second part of it. 00:31:45.43\00:31:47.44 Romans 7:17, and this is very significant. 00:31:47.47\00:31:49.94 Now, when you choose who to serve, 00:31:50.01\00:31:52.67 what happens, 00:31:52.71\00:31:54.08 you are right now immobilized because something happens. 00:31:54.11\00:31:58.41 For it is now for, 00:31:58.45\00:32:00.02 but now it is no longer I who do it, 00:32:00.05\00:32:03.15 but sin that dwells in me. 00:32:03.18\00:32:04.65 When you choose the wrong master, 00:32:04.69\00:32:08.86 sin is now taken over. 00:32:08.89\00:32:11.86 Sin is doing it or you are now a slave to sin. 00:32:11.89\00:32:15.60 It has dominion over you. That's right. 00:32:15.63\00:32:17.40 And right now because you are a slave, 00:32:17.47\00:32:20.24 you are saying to yourself, I can't believe I did that. 00:32:20.27\00:32:23.51 Well, actually, you didn't. 00:32:23.54\00:32:24.87 You just submitted to a power greater than you, 00:32:24.91\00:32:27.28 which you, like, as Paul says, 00:32:27.31\00:32:28.64 "This power is so much greater than me 00:32:28.68\00:32:30.08 that that power is taken over." 00:32:30.15\00:32:31.48 But now let's look 00:32:31.51\00:32:32.85 at what happens when you submit to the other power, 00:32:32.88\00:32:34.22 Galatians 2:20. 00:32:34.25\00:32:37.49 This is a passage also, Ryan, 00:32:37.52\00:32:39.42 that fits so beautifully 00:32:39.45\00:32:42.49 into another aspect of our walk with Christ, 00:32:42.52\00:32:44.86 but Galatians 2:20, 00:32:44.89\00:32:46.80 "I have been crucified with Christ." 00:32:46.83\00:32:49.10 Now Romans 7:17. 00:32:49.13\00:32:52.57 Go there, Jill, because I want to play 00:32:52.60\00:32:53.94 ping pong here. 00:32:53.97\00:32:55.30 Sure. Sure. Okay. 00:32:55.34\00:32:56.71 Romans 7:17. 00:32:56.74\00:32:58.14 Look at that. 00:32:58.17\00:33:00.38 So I'm going to read Galatians 2:20, 00:33:00.41\00:33:01.81 then I'm gonna throw Romans 7:17 00:33:01.84\00:33:03.21 and tell you what it says. 00:33:03.24\00:33:04.58 It says, "It is no longer I who live but Christ." 00:33:04.61\00:33:07.78 Romans 7:17, Jill. 00:33:07.82\00:33:09.15 "It is no longer I who do it, but sin." 00:33:09.18\00:33:10.82 Okay. 00:33:10.89\00:33:12.22 It is no longer I who live, but Christ. 00:33:12.25\00:33:14.06 It is no longer I who live, who do it but sin. 00:33:14.09\00:33:16.59 In both cases, 00:33:16.62\00:33:17.96 it is no longer either one in both cases. 00:33:17.99\00:33:21.13 Right. That's right. 00:33:21.16\00:33:22.50 You all, you did was decide who to serve. 00:33:22.53\00:33:24.60 Right. Yay! 00:33:24.63\00:33:25.97 In both cases, 00:33:26.00\00:33:27.34 you became his slave or his slave. 00:33:27.37\00:33:31.31 And I love to be God slave, 00:33:31.34\00:33:33.78 because I'm in a house that's filled with love. 00:33:33.81\00:33:36.58 That's that servanthood, I no longer call you servant, 00:33:36.61\00:33:40.52 but friend, or master but friend. 00:33:40.55\00:33:43.05 So we don't have a master slave relationship. 00:33:43.08\00:33:47.36 We have a father and son relationship 00:33:47.39\00:33:50.13 from which we cry out Abba Father. 00:33:50.16\00:33:52.99 So when you know that in, that case, 00:33:53.03\00:33:55.33 that's why now look at the sanctification. 00:33:55.36\00:33:58.30 Once you now yield to Christ, 00:33:58.33\00:34:01.24 He's in charge and look what's going to happen. 00:34:01.27\00:34:04.24 And the life which I now live in the flesh, 00:34:04.31\00:34:07.81 I live by faith in the Son of God, 00:34:07.84\00:34:10.15 who did what? 00:34:10.18\00:34:11.55 Loved me and gave Himself for me. 00:34:11.58\00:34:14.82 And then you can add, you can't miss verse 21. 00:34:14.85\00:34:17.39 "I do not set aside the grace of God, 00:34:17.42\00:34:19.22 for if righteousness comes through the law, 00:34:19.25\00:34:22.66 then Christ died in vain. 00:34:22.69\00:34:24.23 In that inference there, 00:34:24.26\00:34:25.83 whether it's referring to the commandments 00:34:25.86\00:34:27.20 or the ceremonial law, 00:34:27.23\00:34:28.56 righteousness doesn't come through either one. 00:34:28.60\00:34:30.87 Righteousness is the character of God. 00:34:30.90\00:34:32.80 The Ten Commandments reveal His character, 00:34:32.83\00:34:34.37 but the Ten Commandments can't fix you. 00:34:34.40\00:34:37.24 It's the Lord who works in you both to will and to do 00:34:37.31\00:34:39.67 of His good pleasure. 00:34:39.71\00:34:41.11 And here's the quotation 00:34:41.14\00:34:42.48 I want to read to you very quickly. 00:34:42.51\00:34:43.98 You know, Jill, we need two more hours. 00:34:44.05\00:34:45.91 That's good. 00:34:45.95\00:34:47.32 Right now I feel like I'm at a... 00:34:47.35\00:34:50.29 I feel like I'm at a smorgasbord 00:34:50.32\00:34:52.89 and I only have one little fork. 00:34:52.92\00:34:57.26 Don't you feel it, Ryan? That's the truth. 00:34:57.33\00:34:58.99 Okay. Here's a quotation, okay. 00:34:59.03\00:35:02.23 The book Temperance, the book, Temperance, is a page 112. 00:35:02.26\00:35:06.84 We must to, 00:35:06.87\00:35:08.20 God has given us the power of choice, 00:35:08.24\00:35:09.74 it is ours to exercise. 00:35:09.77\00:35:11.17 We cannot change our hearts, we cannot control our thoughts, 00:35:11.21\00:35:14.84 our impulses, our affections. 00:35:14.88\00:35:16.64 We cannot make ourselves pure, fit for God's service, 00:35:16.68\00:35:20.05 but we can choose to serve God. 00:35:20.12\00:35:22.98 We can give Him our will, 00:35:23.02\00:35:24.72 then He will work in us 00:35:24.75\00:35:26.09 to will and to do according to His good pleasure. 00:35:26.12\00:35:28.66 Thus, our whole nature will be brought 00:35:28.69\00:35:30.46 under the control of Christ. 00:35:30.53\00:35:32.76 And I leave the next quotation for later on. 00:35:32.79\00:35:35.33 But so, once we choose who to serve, 00:35:35.36\00:35:37.73 they decide, okay, you ready for the process? 00:35:37.77\00:35:40.64 And then we become holy or corrupt. 00:35:40.67\00:35:42.00 You know, it's amazing, 00:35:42.04\00:35:43.41 because everything you just described 00:35:43.44\00:35:44.77 is put on display 00:35:44.81\00:35:46.14 in the Garden of Gethsemane by Christ. 00:35:46.17\00:35:47.51 Oh, yes, it is. It's powerful. 00:35:47.54\00:35:48.88 As you were walking through that, 00:35:48.91\00:35:50.25 I'm seeing vividly in my mind, 00:35:50.28\00:35:51.61 because Christ had already chosen. 00:35:51.65\00:35:53.31 I think this is at the end of His ministry. 00:35:53.35\00:35:55.35 So you have to consider, He's three years, 00:35:55.38\00:35:58.39 three and a half years into this, 00:35:58.42\00:36:00.16 He's been serving His Father. 00:36:00.19\00:36:01.76 He had already chosen to serve His Father. 00:36:01.79\00:36:04.03 But did the test stop 00:36:04.06\00:36:06.23 just because He chose in the beginning 00:36:06.26\00:36:07.70 to serve His Father, the test continued on. 00:36:07.73\00:36:09.73 And we see interestingly there, 00:36:09.76\00:36:11.37 that in the Garden of Gethsemane, 00:36:11.40\00:36:13.00 the nature, the nature of the first Adam, 00:36:13.03\00:36:15.37 the fallen Adam comes out in Christ when He says, 00:36:15.40\00:36:18.34 "Man, I don't want to do this. 00:36:18.37\00:36:20.68 I do not want to have to drink of this cup." 00:36:20.71\00:36:22.41 However... 00:36:22.44\00:36:23.78 Lord, if there's any way that I can, you know, 00:36:23.85\00:36:27.15 do and complete what You want me to do 00:36:27.22\00:36:30.29 without having to drink this cup. 00:36:30.32\00:36:32.62 But if not, Lord, as you said, however... 00:36:32.65\00:36:35.42 Nevertheless... 00:36:35.46\00:36:36.83 Nevertheless, not my will. 00:36:36.86\00:36:39.26 So He placed Himself 00:36:39.29\00:36:41.53 not only as a slave to His Father, by serving Him. 00:36:41.56\00:36:46.00 But once you do that, once you say, 00:36:46.03\00:36:47.64 Father, I'm serving You, 00:36:47.67\00:36:49.47 then as the slave master relationship 00:36:49.50\00:36:52.11 to the slave, 00:36:52.14\00:36:53.48 the slave now must place his will 00:36:53.51\00:36:56.04 at the feet of the slave master and say, 00:36:56.08\00:36:58.55 not my way, but yours. 00:36:58.58\00:36:59.91 That's right. 00:36:59.95\00:37:01.28 And then I love what you described earlier 00:37:01.32\00:37:02.65 because there, you know, there are stories 00:37:02.68\00:37:04.02 and I'm a history major, I love reading history. 00:37:04.09\00:37:05.95 There are many, many slaves who lost their life 00:37:05.99\00:37:07.99 that even though 00:37:08.02\00:37:09.36 by identification they were a slave. 00:37:09.39\00:37:13.23 They refused in their own mind to be a slave 00:37:13.26\00:37:15.43 and they lost their life for it, 00:37:15.46\00:37:16.80 because they refused that even though by legally 00:37:16.87\00:37:20.24 they were bought and sold into slavery, 00:37:20.27\00:37:23.24 they in their mind said, 00:37:23.27\00:37:24.61 I'm not going to serve this man. 00:37:24.64\00:37:25.97 And so we see 00:37:26.01\00:37:27.38 that Christ placed Himself humbly at the Father, 00:37:27.41\00:37:29.54 you know, speaking in righteousness terms here, 00:37:29.58\00:37:31.55 He placed Himself at the feet of the Father and so Lord, 00:37:31.58\00:37:33.82 not my will, but yours. 00:37:33.85\00:37:35.45 That's powerful. That's powerful. 00:37:35.48\00:37:37.19 Amazing. Amen. 00:37:37.22\00:37:38.59 So we've talked in the sanctification process 00:37:38.62\00:37:40.86 we need to make a choice who we will serve, right? 00:37:40.89\00:37:44.23 Then I know there's the choice, 00:37:44.26\00:37:46.59 but is there any other aspect within sanctification? 00:37:46.63\00:37:49.93 I'm thinking of a biblical principle 00:37:49.96\00:37:51.47 that talks about what you feed grows. 00:37:51.50\00:37:54.97 That's right. And what you starve die. 00:37:55.00\00:37:57.34 So how does that relate to our experience as Christians 00:37:57.41\00:38:01.71 through the sanctification process? 00:38:01.74\00:38:03.08 Romans 12:1-2. 00:38:03.11\00:38:04.68 Right. Yeah. 00:38:04.71\00:38:07.12 Even Isaiah 1 says, "Cease to do evil, 00:38:07.15\00:38:09.92 learn to do good." 00:38:09.95\00:38:11.69 There's somewhere, there's a training process. 00:38:11.72\00:38:14.32 What did I say? Romans 12:1-2. 00:38:14.36\00:38:15.99 Okay, great. 00:38:16.02\00:38:17.53 I knew what I said, but for some reason in my mind, 00:38:17.56\00:38:20.63 my brain was... 00:38:20.70\00:38:22.03 You were on Isaiah. I was so far ahead. 00:38:22.06\00:38:24.33 The one thing I have, 00:38:24.37\00:38:25.80 you know, I praise God, my mind, 00:38:25.83\00:38:27.57 I'm so far ahead in my mind where I'm headed next. 00:38:27.64\00:38:30.41 Sometimes I say, why am I at this intersection? 00:38:30.44\00:38:32.37 Which way do I go? 00:38:32.41\00:38:33.78 Romans 12:1, it says, "I beseech you therefore, 00:38:33.81\00:38:36.31 brethren, by the mercies of God," 00:38:36.34\00:38:38.18 and here it is, 00:38:38.21\00:38:39.55 "remember, do you not know 00:38:39.58\00:38:40.92 that whom you present yourselves," 00:38:40.95\00:38:42.28 here it is again, 00:38:42.32\00:38:43.69 "that you present your body a living sacrifice, 00:38:43.72\00:38:47.69 holy, acceptable to God, 00:38:47.72\00:38:49.32 which is your reasonable service." 00:38:49.36\00:38:51.23 Living sacrifice, you know, that means? 00:38:51.26\00:38:53.29 It is no longer I who live. That's right. 00:38:53.33\00:38:55.16 Good. See? 00:38:55.20\00:38:56.67 Living sacrifice, you got to put something down, 00:38:56.70\00:38:58.57 but how does it happen? 00:38:58.60\00:38:59.93 This is our part 00:38:59.97\00:39:01.30 which we oftentimes try to sidestep this. 00:39:01.34\00:39:04.44 And do not be conformed to this world. 00:39:04.47\00:39:06.71 You literally, you've literally, 00:39:06.78\00:39:08.58 my wife and I, 00:39:08.61\00:39:09.94 we rejoice in this particular passage 00:39:09.98\00:39:11.75 because we literally, 00:39:11.78\00:39:13.28 if something comes on television 00:39:13.31\00:39:14.65 that we know is not good. 00:39:14.68\00:39:16.02 We say, "I'm not watching that. 00:39:16.05\00:39:17.39 I am just not watching that. 00:39:17.42\00:39:18.75 I'm not watching that." 00:39:18.79\00:39:20.16 You got to say, I'm not watching that. 00:39:20.19\00:39:21.52 I'm not listening to that. I'm not going to do that. 00:39:21.56\00:39:23.09 I'm not going there. I refuse to participate. 00:39:23.12\00:39:25.99 You literally have to be not be conformed 00:39:26.03\00:39:29.00 because the world is continually pressing you 00:39:29.03\00:39:31.70 like a crowded train to go through that door. 00:39:31.73\00:39:35.00 And you say, I'm not, hold your ground. 00:39:35.04\00:39:37.54 Why? 00:39:37.61\00:39:38.94 Transformed by the renewing of your mind. 00:39:38.97\00:39:41.41 This is where Bibles, 00:39:41.44\00:39:42.78 that you may prove only then 00:39:42.81\00:39:44.68 what is that good and acceptable 00:39:44.71\00:39:46.11 and perfect will of God. 00:39:46.15\00:39:47.52 Now let me add one more component. 00:39:47.55\00:39:48.88 This is huge. 00:39:48.92\00:39:50.25 So when you refuse to go one route, 00:39:50.29\00:39:51.79 and determined to go the other, 00:39:51.82\00:39:53.36 only then can you prove what is God's perfect will. 00:39:53.39\00:39:56.16 But here's one thing I'm gonna throw 00:39:56.19\00:39:57.53 just completely different left turn. 00:39:57.56\00:39:58.89 Are you ready for it? Hold on, left. 00:39:58.93\00:40:00.90 This is one of the reasons 00:40:00.93\00:40:02.26 why so many Christians reject the Sabbath 00:40:02.30\00:40:04.33 'cause they think it's about a day. 00:40:04.37\00:40:06.13 Yes. Right. 00:40:06.17\00:40:07.54 Let's go to Genesis 2 very quickly. 00:40:07.57\00:40:08.90 They think it's about a day but it's not about a day. 00:40:08.94\00:40:11.67 The day is the proving... 00:40:11.71\00:40:13.04 The day is the proving 00:40:13.07\00:40:14.98 what is the good and acceptable, 00:40:15.01\00:40:16.34 and perfect will of God. 00:40:16.38\00:40:17.71 The day is proving 00:40:17.75\00:40:19.08 what is the good and acceptable, 00:40:19.11\00:40:20.45 and perfect will of God. 00:40:20.52\00:40:21.85 But Genesis 2:1, what does it say? 00:40:21.88\00:40:23.52 Let's do verse 3. Verse 3? 00:40:23.59\00:40:25.59 "Then God blessed the seventh day 00:40:25.62\00:40:27.06 and sanctified it, 00:40:27.09\00:40:28.42 because in it He rested from all His work 00:40:28.46\00:40:31.13 which God created and made. 00:40:31.16\00:40:32.99 So He blessed it and then He sanctified it. 00:40:33.03\00:40:34.90 So what does it have to do with us? 00:40:34.93\00:40:36.53 Now, Ezekiel 20:12. That's right. 00:40:36.56\00:40:40.44 It's a process. It's a process. 00:40:40.47\00:40:42.47 This is connection between sanctification 00:40:42.50\00:40:45.07 and the Sabbath. 00:40:45.11\00:40:46.44 Yes! It's a process. 00:40:46.47\00:40:48.48 A lot of people say, "I prefer Sunday." 00:40:48.51\00:40:50.75 Well, you know, Ryan, you just made the point. 00:40:50.78\00:40:52.45 If it's what you prefer, 00:40:52.48\00:40:54.02 the nevertheless never comes into play. 00:40:54.05\00:40:56.05 Right. I prefer Sunday. 00:40:56.08\00:40:57.42 Nevertheless, I'm going to keep Sabbath 00:40:57.49\00:40:58.95 because the Lord said, remember to keep it... 00:40:58.99\00:41:01.89 Right. Keep it holy. 00:41:01.92\00:41:03.83 Okay, that's right. Sorry. 00:41:03.86\00:41:05.19 I just thought, oh, you were waiting for that. 00:41:05.23\00:41:07.10 Keep it holy. 00:41:07.13\00:41:08.86 Holy is another word for sanctified. 00:41:08.90\00:41:10.27 Absolutely. 00:41:10.30\00:41:11.63 Notice what it says, now, Ezekiel 20:12 and 20. 00:41:11.67\00:41:13.97 This is the reason. 00:41:14.04\00:41:15.37 Now if you're Christian 00:41:15.40\00:41:16.74 that's not a Seventh-day Adventist, 00:41:16.77\00:41:18.11 this is the reason for the Sabbath. 00:41:18.14\00:41:19.61 Why does the Bible ask? Why does the Lord ask us? 00:41:19.64\00:41:22.71 Jill, read verse 12 for us? 00:41:22.74\00:41:24.45 "Moreover, I also gave them my Sabbath, 00:41:24.48\00:41:27.12 to be assigned between them and Me, 00:41:27.15\00:41:29.15 that they might know 00:41:29.18\00:41:30.52 that I'm the Lord who sanctifies them." 00:41:30.59\00:41:32.69 It's a sign of sanctification. That's right. 00:41:32.72\00:41:34.89 When you honor the Sabbath, you're saying, okay, Lord. 00:41:34.92\00:41:37.13 Look at verse 20 now. 00:41:37.16\00:41:39.06 "Hallow My Sabbaths, 00:41:39.09\00:41:40.43 and they will be a sign between Me and you, 00:41:40.50\00:41:42.13 that you may know that I am the Lord your God." 00:41:42.16\00:41:44.10 Right. 00:41:44.17\00:41:45.50 So watch this, is the Sabbath truth? 00:41:45.53\00:41:47.04 Absolutely. Is Jesus truth? 00:41:47.07\00:41:48.40 Absolutely. 00:41:48.44\00:41:49.77 Sanctify them, by that truth I, word is truth. 00:41:49.80\00:41:53.41 Jesus is truth, the Sabbath is truth, 00:41:53.48\00:41:55.41 the commandments are truth. 00:41:55.44\00:41:56.78 You cannot be sanctified. 00:41:56.85\00:41:58.41 You cannot be in the process of sanctification 00:41:58.45\00:42:02.05 and refuse the very identifying mark 00:42:02.08\00:42:04.85 of sanctification, it's not possible. 00:42:04.89\00:42:06.52 That's right. Amen. 00:42:06.55\00:42:07.89 Yeah, absolutely. 00:42:07.92\00:42:09.26 No I, you know, you would ask earlier, 00:42:09.29\00:42:12.13 in reference to, you know, 00:42:12.16\00:42:13.90 basically the purpose of sanctification. 00:42:13.93\00:42:16.43 I wanted to just talk about that for a moment 00:42:16.46\00:42:18.27 and add a couple of texts. 00:42:18.30\00:42:19.63 Acts 26:18, let's start there. Oh, yeah. 00:42:19.67\00:42:22.17 Acts 26:18, how am I sanctified? 00:42:22.20\00:42:26.68 What does it look like? 00:42:26.71\00:42:28.04 What should I do in order to make sure 00:42:28.08\00:42:30.65 that I'm in this process of sanctification? 00:42:30.68\00:42:33.28 Acts 26:18, 00:42:33.31\00:42:35.58 Paul was called to open their eyes. 00:42:35.62\00:42:38.12 Of course, this is the work of the Holy Spirit 00:42:38.15\00:42:39.49 through Paul, 00:42:39.52\00:42:40.86 and ultimately the work of the Holy Spirit 00:42:40.89\00:42:42.36 in order to turn them from darkness to light. 00:42:42.39\00:42:44.89 That's the purpose of sanctification. 00:42:44.93\00:42:46.39 God wants to transform us, 00:42:46.43\00:42:48.00 take us out of that darkness 00:42:48.03\00:42:49.36 and bring us into His marvelous light. 00:42:49.40\00:42:50.90 It says and from the power of Satan to God, 00:42:50.97\00:42:53.84 that they may receive forgiveness of sins, 00:42:53.87\00:42:55.74 but does it stop there? 00:42:55.77\00:42:57.11 Many people's gospel stops right there. 00:42:57.14\00:42:59.64 That Jesus died on the cross that I might have forgiveness. 00:42:59.67\00:43:02.78 Jesus, my friends, died on the cross 00:43:02.81\00:43:04.61 for a whole lot more than just forgiveness. 00:43:04.65\00:43:06.85 Yes, forgiveness was the avenue, 00:43:06.92\00:43:09.55 but over the paved path, 00:43:09.58\00:43:12.12 but Christ died on the cross 00:43:12.15\00:43:13.96 for much more than just forgiveness. 00:43:13.99\00:43:15.42 Christ died on the cross 00:43:15.46\00:43:16.83 that we might have complete victory over sin. 00:43:16.86\00:43:19.66 And that's what this is saying here. 00:43:19.69\00:43:21.03 Notice, that you might receive forgiveness of sin 00:43:21.06\00:43:23.16 and inheritance among those 00:43:23.20\00:43:24.67 who are sanctified by faith in Me. 00:43:24.70\00:43:27.14 That sanctification process comes, 00:43:27.17\00:43:29.20 but notice 2 Corinthians 3:18. 00:43:29.24\00:43:31.27 Yes. Okay. 00:43:31.31\00:43:32.64 Now we're dialing this in, 2 Corinthians 3:18. 00:43:32.67\00:43:35.81 How can I make sure 00:43:35.84\00:43:37.71 that I am experiencing true biblical sanctification? 00:43:37.75\00:43:42.15 2 Corinthians 3:18, 00:43:42.18\00:43:44.29 "But we all with unveiled face 00:43:44.32\00:43:47.46 beholding as in a mirror of the glory of the Lord." 00:43:47.49\00:43:50.43 So what are we beholding? 00:43:50.46\00:43:51.89 We're looking at Him. Jesus. 00:43:51.93\00:43:53.26 Okay, there's not an actual text 00:43:53.29\00:43:54.63 that says for word for word, 00:43:54.66\00:43:56.53 by beholding we become changed, 00:43:56.56\00:43:57.90 but this is where we get that concept from, 00:43:57.93\00:43:59.77 because you notice this text says, 00:43:59.80\00:44:01.77 that by beholding in a mirror, the glory of the Lord, 00:44:01.80\00:44:04.31 we are, notice, 00:44:04.34\00:44:05.67 being transformed into the same image how? 00:44:05.71\00:44:08.31 From glory to glory. 00:44:08.34\00:44:09.68 Paul would say through step by step, 00:44:09.71\00:44:11.38 faith to faith, and in this case, 00:44:11.41\00:44:12.98 glory to glory, 00:44:13.01\00:44:14.48 just as by the Spirit of the Lord. 00:44:14.52\00:44:16.89 This reminds me of the conversation 00:44:16.92\00:44:19.35 that Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:44:19.39\00:44:21.19 And actually Miss Ellen White makes this very clear. 00:44:21.22\00:44:23.73 She says that in no other part of scripture is salvation 00:44:23.76\00:44:27.00 made more clear, 00:44:27.03\00:44:28.36 the plan of salvation made more clear 00:44:28.40\00:44:29.73 than in John Chapter 3 00:44:29.76\00:44:31.10 in the conversation that Jesus had with Nicodemus. 00:44:31.13\00:44:33.23 This is powerful. 00:44:33.27\00:44:34.60 By beholding, we become changed. 00:44:34.64\00:44:36.24 When we behold Christ, 00:44:36.27\00:44:38.24 and we place our will at His feet, 00:44:38.27\00:44:41.81 and we put self on the cross. 00:44:41.84\00:44:44.95 Remember, Jesus said, 00:44:44.98\00:44:46.31 "If you desire to come after Me and follow Me, 00:44:46.35\00:44:47.98 take up your cross, deny yourself, 00:44:48.02\00:44:50.52 take up your cross, 00:44:50.59\00:44:51.92 that is take up your instrument of death, 00:44:51.95\00:44:53.29 sacrifice self, put self upon the altar, 00:44:53.32\00:44:55.52 we have to do that. 00:44:55.56\00:44:56.93 But notice this, John Chapter 3, 00:44:56.96\00:44:58.93 the key verse in John Chapter 3 in my opinion is verse 14. 00:44:58.96\00:45:02.56 Many people are gonna say, verse 16, 00:45:02.60\00:45:04.37 because that's the most popular verse, 00:45:04.40\00:45:06.30 but you don't have a verse 16 00:45:06.33\00:45:08.24 unless you first experienced verse 14. 00:45:08.27\00:45:10.31 Okay. 00:45:10.34\00:45:11.67 He says here, 00:45:11.71\00:45:13.04 "And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, 00:45:13.07\00:45:15.11 even so must the Son of man be lifted up." 00:45:15.14\00:45:16.85 That's right. 00:45:16.88\00:45:18.21 And many people will read that and go, 00:45:18.25\00:45:19.58 "What? What does that mean?" 00:45:19.61\00:45:20.95 Well, when you go back to Numbers 21 00:45:20.98\00:45:22.65 and you read that story. 00:45:22.68\00:45:24.49 How were the children of Israel saved 00:45:24.52\00:45:27.86 when those serpents 00:45:27.89\00:45:29.22 started going throughout the camp 00:45:29.26\00:45:30.63 and biting and killing them? 00:45:30.66\00:45:31.99 That's right. Looking at Jesus. 00:45:32.03\00:45:33.36 Jesus is referencing that story here. 00:45:33.40\00:45:34.73 He's saying, if you really, 00:45:34.76\00:45:36.10 He's explaining this to Nicodemus 00:45:36.13\00:45:37.47 who was a Pharisee, who was the, 00:45:37.50\00:45:39.20 a theological scholar of his day. 00:45:39.23\00:45:41.87 And He's telling this man, 00:45:41.90\00:45:43.24 "Look, if you really want to understand 00:45:43.27\00:45:44.61 all that I've told you how to be born again. 00:45:44.64\00:45:46.57 How sanctification 00:45:46.61\00:45:48.24 is vitally important to salvation." 00:45:48.28\00:45:50.95 He says, "If you want to be born again, 00:45:50.98\00:45:52.68 and you want to see the kingdom of God." 00:45:52.71\00:45:54.55 Notice this, just as Moses 00:45:54.58\00:45:55.92 lifted up the serpent in the wood 00:45:55.95\00:45:57.29 and so shall the Son of man be lifted up. 00:45:57.32\00:45:58.89 So how can I make sure that I'm not just saying, 00:45:58.92\00:46:01.02 I'm justified and that's it, 00:46:01.06\00:46:02.49 because most people's gospel stops right there. 00:46:02.52\00:46:04.83 Justification only, no sanctification, 00:46:04.86\00:46:07.13 and that's where you just brought up clearly 00:46:07.20\00:46:08.96 the Sabbath issue. 00:46:09.00\00:46:10.37 Most people don't find Sabbath important, 00:46:10.40\00:46:12.43 because their gospel only consists of justification. 00:46:12.47\00:46:15.20 If I'm already justified, 00:46:15.24\00:46:16.57 why do I have to keep a Sabbath? Right? 00:46:16.60\00:46:18.54 Well, the Sabbath is a part of that sanctifying process, 00:46:18.57\00:46:21.08 also the sanctuary truth as well. 00:46:21.11\00:46:23.18 If you study the sanctuary model, 00:46:23.21\00:46:24.81 what's the purpose of the model? 00:46:24.85\00:46:26.18 Most people stop at the altar of sacrifice 00:46:26.21\00:46:28.92 and there's, the courtyard there, 00:46:28.95\00:46:30.29 they go to that altar of sacrifice. 00:46:30.32\00:46:31.65 Jesus is dying as that lamb that's being slain, 00:46:31.69\00:46:34.39 but they don't go any further. 00:46:34.42\00:46:35.76 They might go to the laver and be baptized, 00:46:35.79\00:46:37.89 but they're not going to enter the Holy Place, 00:46:37.93\00:46:39.59 and they're certainly not going to enter 00:46:39.63\00:46:40.96 the Most Holy Place. 00:46:41.00\00:46:42.33 And if they do, most people believe 00:46:42.36\00:46:43.70 that they can go right from the courtyard, 00:46:43.77\00:46:45.33 skip the Holy Place 00:46:45.37\00:46:46.74 and go right into the Most Holy Place. 00:46:46.77\00:46:48.47 It's very vitally important that we understand 00:46:48.50\00:46:51.21 that right back to the story here, John 3, 00:46:51.24\00:46:54.01 just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness. 00:46:54.08\00:46:57.91 They had to look, in fact, 00:46:57.95\00:46:59.58 by faith they have to behold the serpent on a stick, 00:46:59.61\00:47:02.95 on that stick that was raised. 00:47:02.98\00:47:05.19 And if they behold, beheld that in faith, 00:47:05.22\00:47:07.96 they were saved. 00:47:07.99\00:47:09.32 Now, what is the point of this? 00:47:09.36\00:47:10.73 By beholding, there is a life and a look at the Savior. 00:47:10.76\00:47:13.63 If we are focusing our attention more on self, 00:47:13.70\00:47:16.87 the desires of the flesh and the pride of life, 00:47:16.90\00:47:19.10 then we're not beholding Christ, 00:47:19.13\00:47:21.14 we are beholding self. 00:47:21.17\00:47:23.10 And just as Christ there in that wilderness, 00:47:23.14\00:47:25.44 in the Garden of Gethsemane, it's very clear. 00:47:25.47\00:47:27.48 Christ had a choice there, He could have said, 00:47:27.51\00:47:29.71 you know what? 00:47:29.74\00:47:31.08 "I really don't want to go through with this." 00:47:31.11\00:47:32.45 He would have actually sent their pastor 00:47:32.48\00:47:34.45 because He would have been submitting Himself to His self. 00:47:34.48\00:47:39.15 Okay. 00:47:39.19\00:47:40.56 But rather He submitted Himself to His Father. 00:47:40.59\00:47:42.29 So how can we make sure 00:47:42.32\00:47:44.06 that we're walking in that sanctifying process, 00:47:44.13\00:47:46.29 that we're experiencing true biblical sanctification. 00:47:46.33\00:47:48.63 We have to behold Jesus and obviously, 00:47:48.66\00:47:51.57 not literally in the sense of, 00:47:51.60\00:47:53.03 you know, a picture in your house or, 00:47:53.07\00:47:55.27 you know, but with focusing on Christ, 00:47:55.30\00:47:57.51 spending time with Christ, 00:47:57.54\00:47:59.41 making your everyday life, every choice, 00:47:59.44\00:48:01.61 everything you do, every thought, 00:48:01.64\00:48:03.28 everything that you possibly do, 00:48:03.35\00:48:04.88 you shroud it, 00:48:04.91\00:48:06.25 you cover it in Christ Jesus and His righteousness. 00:48:06.28\00:48:09.78 By beholding His righteousness, you shall become changed. 00:48:09.82\00:48:12.52 Amen. That's right. 00:48:12.55\00:48:13.89 That's right. Pastor John? 00:48:13.96\00:48:15.82 One of my favorite quotations 00:48:15.86\00:48:17.23 and I'll end with this particular Bible verse, 00:48:17.26\00:48:19.53 Education, page 29. 00:48:19.56\00:48:21.46 The will is the governing power in the nature of Christ, 00:48:21.50\00:48:25.20 not my will, but yours be done. 00:48:25.23\00:48:27.54 The power of decision or choice, 00:48:27.57\00:48:29.74 every human being possessed of reason has power 00:48:29.77\00:48:32.44 to choose the right. 00:48:32.47\00:48:34.44 In every experience of life, God's Word to us 00:48:34.48\00:48:36.51 is choose you this day whom you will serve. 00:48:36.54\00:48:39.58 Everyone may place his will on the side of the will of God, 00:48:39.61\00:48:42.75 and they may choose to obey Him, 00:48:42.78\00:48:44.52 and thus by linking himself with divine agencies, 00:48:44.55\00:48:48.89 he may stand 00:48:48.92\00:48:50.36 where nothing can force him to do evil. 00:48:50.43\00:48:54.30 Nothing can. How does that happen? 00:48:54.33\00:48:56.53 Here's the last text I'm going to give. 00:48:56.56\00:48:58.37 Ezekiel 36:25-27. 00:48:58.40\00:49:00.94 By the way, sanctification is Old and New Testament, 00:49:00.97\00:49:03.17 it's not just New Testament. 00:49:03.20\00:49:04.77 It always has been the process by which God cleanses us. 00:49:04.81\00:49:08.51 Ezekiel 36:25-27. 00:49:08.54\00:49:11.01 The Lord says, 00:49:11.05\00:49:12.45 "Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, 00:49:12.48\00:49:15.55 baptism, and you shall be clean. 00:49:15.58\00:49:18.32 I will cleanse you from all your filthiness 00:49:18.35\00:49:21.22 and from all your idols." 00:49:21.26\00:49:23.12 He's continued, that's the sanctification. 00:49:23.16\00:49:25.33 "I will give you a new heart 00:49:25.36\00:49:26.70 and put a new spirit within you. 00:49:26.73\00:49:28.66 Create in me a clean heart. 00:49:28.70\00:49:30.50 I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh 00:49:30.57\00:49:33.94 and give you a heart of flesh. 00:49:33.97\00:49:35.30 I will put my spirit within you 00:49:35.34\00:49:37.31 and cause you to walk in my statutes, 00:49:37.34\00:49:39.41 and you will keep my judgments and do them." 00:49:39.44\00:49:41.64 What a difference between what the devil said 00:49:41.68\00:49:43.55 I will, and it was for me. 00:49:43.58\00:49:46.58 And the Lord said, I will do this for you. 00:49:46.61\00:49:49.82 I will do this for me. 00:49:49.85\00:49:51.79 And the Lord looked at me and said, John, 00:49:51.82\00:49:53.15 I will do this for you. 00:49:53.19\00:49:54.69 That gives me hope. Praise the Lord. 00:49:54.72\00:49:56.42 He's gonna do that for me, Jill. 00:49:56.46\00:49:57.79 Amen.
