Just like a human being. 00:09:07.31\00:09:08.64 Yeah, yeah. 00:09:08.68\00:09:10.05 You know, elephants, I think it's about two years, 00:09:10.08\00:09:11.41 and a horse is 11 months. 00:09:11.45\00:09:13.18 I told my wife it was two years for an elephant, she gasped. 00:09:13.21\00:09:17.62 You're not gonna get an elephant. 00:09:17.65\00:09:19.92 But they never, almost never, once in a while... 00:09:19.95\00:09:22.32 Well, in 40 years, I saw one set of twins. 00:09:22.36\00:09:25.26 One set of twins. 00:09:25.29\00:09:26.93 We have a video. 00:09:27.00\00:09:28.33 Cami. Yes. 00:09:28.36\00:09:29.70 And the reason he's showing us 00:09:29.73\00:09:31.07 because an incredible miracle has taken place in Tanzania 00:09:31.10\00:09:35.30 with the Maasai tribe. 00:09:35.34\00:09:37.41 We were able to go to Tanzania and document this, 00:09:37.44\00:09:41.54 the story of how when you're faithful to God, 00:09:41.58\00:09:44.81 God is faithful to you. 00:09:44.85\00:09:46.58 And with the Maasai tribe, 00:09:46.61\00:09:49.08 cows are extremely important, it is their livelihood. 00:09:49.12\00:09:53.66 And so as you just heard Duane say 00:09:53.69\00:09:55.29 they rarely have twins, 00:09:55.32\00:09:57.53 but watch and see what God does. 00:09:57.56\00:09:59.56 Okay. With Abraham in this video. 00:09:59.59\00:10:01.76 Okay, let's go to the Abraham video right now. 00:10:01.80\00:10:03.97 With colorful clothes and herds of cattle, 00:10:07.80\00:10:10.81 the Maasai people are spread throughout this land. 00:10:10.84\00:10:14.08 Watch us when very wealthy Maasai tribal leader 00:10:14.11\00:10:17.35 does the unthinkable. 00:10:17.38\00:10:19.01 He puts his faith in God first before everything else. 00:10:19.05\00:10:22.92 This is AWR360A°. 00:10:22.95\00:10:25.42 We are in Tanzania, 00:10:39.03\00:10:40.84 a country famous for the Maasai people, 00:10:40.87\00:10:43.71 known for their distinctive customs 00:10:43.74\00:10:45.44 and brightly colored dress. 00:10:45.47\00:10:47.31 They welcomed me with a native jumping dance. 00:10:47.38\00:10:50.35 From a standing position 00:10:50.38\00:10:51.71 these warriors can vertically spring 00:10:51.75\00:10:53.75 over three feet high. 00:10:53.82\00:10:55.82 Their smiles made me feel right at home 00:10:55.85\00:10:57.99 and they even allowed me 00:10:58.02\00:10:59.35 to carry one of their precious babies. 00:10:59.39\00:11:02.12 I enjoyed every moment 00:11:02.16\00:11:03.66 and fell in love with these dear people 00:11:03.73\00:11:05.89 who received me with open arms. 00:11:05.93\00:11:09.06 The Maasai have a semi nomadic lifestyle. 00:11:09.10\00:11:12.10 Even this village we are at right now is temporary. 00:11:12.13\00:11:15.94 Every aspect of their lives revolves around their cattle. 00:11:15.97\00:11:19.74 The cows determine where the village moves 00:11:19.77\00:11:21.81 based on where the herds can eat grass. 00:11:21.84\00:11:24.81 Cattle is their currency and their main source of food. 00:11:24.85\00:11:28.35 Nothing is left to waste. 00:11:28.38\00:11:30.19 Even their huts are made of cow dung. 00:11:30.22\00:11:33.96 For a man to give away his cattle is foolish 00:11:33.99\00:11:36.29 and unheard of. 00:11:36.32\00:11:37.76 That's why Abraham's story is amazing. 00:11:37.79\00:11:40.63 He owns more than 1,000 cows. 00:11:40.70\00:11:43.00 I have over 1,000 cows 00:11:56.21\00:11:58.41 and I'm considered rich by my Maasai people, 00:11:58.45\00:12:02.02 but something was missing in my life. 00:12:02.05\00:12:06.29 Abraham's heart was convicted at an evangelistic series, 00:12:06.32\00:12:10.03 and he became a baptized member 00:12:10.06\00:12:11.96 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:12:11.99\00:12:15.60 Most Massai cannot read or write 00:12:15.63\00:12:17.37 so they learn from the radio. 00:12:17.40\00:12:19.70 Abraham was overjoyed when he tuned in AWR. 00:12:19.73\00:12:24.11 It was a topic of tithing 00:12:24.14\00:12:25.51 that really caught his attention. 00:12:25.54\00:12:27.28 They spoke of faithfulness and trusting God, 00:12:33.42\00:12:36.32 and that 10% belongs to Him. 00:12:36.35\00:12:40.76 As his eyes took in all that he owned, 00:12:40.79\00:12:43.22 he knew what he had to do. 00:12:43.26\00:12:45.49 In that moment, he made a commitment. 00:12:45.53\00:12:47.96 Like Jacob of old, he marked every 10th cow. 00:12:48.00\00:12:51.47 By the time he was finished, 00:12:51.50\00:12:53.03 more than 100 cows have been designated for God. 00:12:53.07\00:12:57.44 My friends and neighbors thought I was crazy. 00:12:57.51\00:13:01.78 To the Massai 100 cows is worth about $30,000. 00:13:01.81\00:13:06.82 You just don't give away 00:13:06.85\00:13:08.18 the most important resource you own. 00:13:08.22\00:13:10.39 Despite the ridicule, 00:13:10.42\00:13:11.92 Abraham remained faithful to God. 00:13:11.95\00:13:15.19 His neighbors stopped laughing nine months later. 00:13:15.22\00:13:18.49 They were shocked to see 00:13:18.53\00:13:19.86 that many of Abraham's cows gave birth to twins 00:13:19.89\00:13:23.70 and his sheep triplets. 00:13:23.77\00:13:26.74 Cows rarely have twins. 00:13:26.77\00:13:28.97 It's considered historic when they do. 00:13:29.00\00:13:31.64 Immediately everyone understood 00:13:31.67\00:13:33.61 that this miracle came from a higher power. 00:13:33.68\00:13:36.95 After the Maasai witnessed Abraham's faithfulness, 00:13:36.98\00:13:39.58 they approached the union president, 00:13:39.61\00:13:41.65 Pastor Godwin Lekundayo and said, 00:13:41.68\00:13:44.59 "We want to tithe too." 00:13:44.62\00:13:46.76 Pastor Godwin was amazed and said, "Are you Adventist?" 00:13:46.79\00:13:50.63 They replied, "No, but we want God to bless us 00:13:50.66\00:13:54.36 just like he's blessing Abraham." 00:13:54.40\00:13:56.87 And praise the Lord, 00:13:56.90\00:13:58.53 nine months later their cows had twins too. 00:13:58.57\00:14:03.44 Here is something else amazing. 00:14:03.51\00:14:05.64 Every time a thief would steal any of Abraham's cattle, 00:14:05.67\00:14:09.34 the cows would always return home, 00:14:09.38\00:14:12.08 as if guided by unseen hands. 00:14:12.11\00:14:15.58 Now thieves fear stealing from Abraham. 00:14:15.62\00:14:19.99 I praise God for Adventist World Radio. 00:14:20.06\00:14:25.83 Abraham credits AWR for changing his life. 00:14:25.86\00:14:29.83 Everyone sees that the more he gives, 00:14:29.86\00:14:32.30 the more he is blessed. 00:14:32.33\00:14:33.87 Thanks to Abraham's testimony. 00:14:37.31\00:14:38.91 Today, over 80 Maasai have accepted Jesus 00:14:38.94\00:14:42.58 and have been baptized. 00:14:42.61\00:14:44.68 And all of them now listen to Adventist World Radio. 00:14:44.71\00:14:48.05 These kinds of miracles 00:14:55.72\00:14:57.06 not only happened a long time ago, 00:14:57.13\00:14:59.33 they're happening today, 00:14:59.36\00:15:00.96 our heavenly Father is ready to multiply your blessings. 00:15:01.00\00:15:04.77 The unreachable are being reached 00:15:04.80\00:15:06.74 by Adventist World Radio. 00:15:06.77\00:15:08.44 Together, we can finish the work. 00:15:08.47\00:15:10.71 We need your faithful prayers and dedicated support. 00:15:10.74\00:15:13.91 We all can look forward to the day 00:15:13.98\00:15:15.61 when we see the fruits of our labor 00:15:15.64\00:15:17.45 and praise God for allowing us to be part of His good work. 00:15:17.48\00:15:21.75 This is AWR360A°. 00:15:21.78\00:15:24.39 What an amazing story. 00:15:34.53\00:15:35.90 I'm blown away. 00:15:35.93\00:15:37.27 Wow, when Abraham trusted God and gave his tithe... 00:15:37.30\00:15:41.47 Yes. 00:15:41.50\00:15:42.84 That the rest of that text is "I will rebuke the devourer." 00:15:42.87\00:15:46.61 And as I'm looking at that, Cami, and all of us, 00:15:46.68\00:15:49.54 the cows started coming back home by themselves 00:15:49.58\00:15:52.11 by God's guidance, 00:15:52.15\00:15:53.52 and the devourer came to take, the lord rebuked the devourer. 00:15:53.55\00:15:56.55 It's amazing. They have twins. 00:15:56.58\00:15:58.15 Yes, all of the cattle had twins 00:15:58.19\00:16:01.39 and then his friends that started to pay tithe, 00:16:01.42\00:16:04.03 their cows started to have twins. 00:16:04.06\00:16:05.39 But you have to understand too. Yeah. 00:16:05.43\00:16:07.00 That when he was, you know, he's counting his cows out 00:16:07.03\00:16:10.07 one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, tithe. 00:16:10.10\00:16:14.40 And the neighbors were there laughing and making fun of him 00:16:14.44\00:16:17.44 saying "He's lost his mind." 00:16:17.51\00:16:18.87 Give away all that money. Yeah. 00:16:18.91\00:16:20.38 Then nine months later they watch, 00:16:20.41\00:16:22.21 they can't believe it. 00:16:22.24\00:16:24.15 Yeah, you have twins and triplets. 00:16:24.18\00:16:25.61 Yeah, his cattle is just, I mean, you can have... 00:16:25.65\00:16:28.25 It's expanding and expanding and now he's even more known 00:16:28.28\00:16:31.19 but, you know, God is using him as an incredible example there 00:16:31.22\00:16:36.39 across the Maasai tribes in Tanzania. 00:16:36.42\00:16:38.56 I think this is a wonderful thing 00:16:38.59\00:16:40.20 that we as Christians need to know. 00:16:40.23\00:16:43.23 We need to realize that as we trust God, 00:16:43.26\00:16:46.74 take Him and His promise, He will bless. 00:16:46.77\00:16:48.87 His scoop shovel pitched there on the farm, 00:16:48.90\00:16:50.91 His scoop shovel is bigger than ours. 00:16:50.94\00:16:52.47 His scoop shovel, I like that. 00:16:52.51\00:16:54.41 And then He owns the cattle on a... 00:16:54.44\00:16:57.98 Thousand hills. That's right. 00:16:58.01\00:17:00.02 This story is becoming a pun to me. 00:17:00.05\00:17:01.62 But a spiritual God there's no way 00:17:01.65\00:17:03.59 that you can outgive God. 00:17:03.62\00:17:05.95 Ed, tell us this amazing story about the guitar? 00:17:05.99\00:17:08.79 Well, it's very interesting to me that, 00:17:08.82\00:17:10.53 this is just an illustration. 00:17:10.56\00:17:12.29 But I think that God has given His people 00:17:12.33\00:17:14.20 enough resources and assets to finish the work. 00:17:14.23\00:17:16.77 Amen. 00:17:16.80\00:17:18.13 And it's just a matter of how we motivate people 00:17:18.17\00:17:19.90 to do something like that. 00:17:19.93\00:17:21.57 It may interest you to know that just... 00:17:21.60\00:17:23.27 was nine years ago, I was here at 3ABN. 00:17:23.30\00:17:25.84 We did a program on Adventist World Radio. 00:17:25.87\00:17:28.18 And I demonstrated those little radios. 00:17:28.21\00:17:29.54 You may remember we did crank it up. 00:17:29.58\00:17:30.95 I remember that. Yeah, that wind up. 00:17:30.98\00:17:32.68 Well, someone called the GC office right after that 00:17:32.71\00:17:35.05 and said, "We have a guitar we'd like to donate." 00:17:35.08\00:17:38.29 And it's very interesting to me 00:17:38.32\00:17:39.82 that the person that answered the phone 00:17:39.85\00:17:43.83 was the young lady who said, 00:17:43.86\00:17:45.19 "I don't think we take guitars." 00:17:45.23\00:17:47.83 Usually folks have cash or liquid assets. 00:17:47.86\00:17:49.80 But this was a guitar. 00:17:49.83\00:17:51.27 And she said, "Well, let me speak with Ed Reid." 00:17:51.30\00:17:52.63 So they transferred the call to me 00:17:52.67\00:17:54.04 and I called him back and he said, 00:17:54.07\00:17:55.40 "Yeah, I have a guitar I'd like to donate," 00:17:55.44\00:17:58.57 but it's not something to take to a flea market on Sunday 00:17:58.61\00:18:00.78 and sell for $500. 00:18:00.81\00:18:02.14 This is a real expensive guitar. 00:18:02.18\00:18:04.51 And it turns out that it was a 1935 edition 00:18:04.55\00:18:08.05 of Gibson's Super 400 archtop guitar, 00:18:08.08\00:18:11.55 which they only made 63 00:18:11.59\00:18:12.92 in their whole history of Gibson guitars. 00:18:12.95\00:18:15.86 And there was a huge guitar, 00:18:15.89\00:18:17.43 one to lead a band because it was... 00:18:17.46\00:18:19.23 in those days nothing was electrified. 00:18:19.26\00:18:21.03 It was supposed to be the loudest guitar. 00:18:21.06\00:18:24.00 And anyway, when I got it, he said, 00:18:24.07\00:18:25.77 "Now, I want you to take this to Nashville 00:18:25.80\00:18:27.74 and get it appraised 00:18:27.77\00:18:29.10 by George Gruhn of Gruhn's Guitar 00:18:29.14\00:18:30.71 'cause he used to work for Gibson 00:18:30.74\00:18:32.07 and knew the value and written a book about it." 00:18:32.11\00:18:34.01 When I took it there, George said to me, 00:18:34.08\00:18:35.51 "Where did you get this?" 00:18:35.54\00:18:37.48 Well, this is interesting 00:18:37.55\00:18:38.88 because Beck and Sherulthine 00:18:38.91\00:18:41.25 who lived in Juliet, Idaho and still do there. 00:18:41.28\00:18:44.35 They had had it for 50 years in their collection. 00:18:44.39\00:18:47.49 But he said to me something 00:18:47.56\00:18:48.89 that I want you guys to understand. 00:18:48.92\00:18:50.63 He said "I do not want this to get burned up at the end. 00:18:50.66\00:18:52.83 I want it to do something good for God." 00:18:52.86\00:18:54.20 Amen. Wow. 00:18:54.23\00:18:55.56 Isn't that interesting? 00:18:55.60\00:18:56.97 That's the whole point of it really. 00:18:57.00\00:18:58.33 But yeah, I took it to George, 00:18:58.37\00:18:59.70 where did you get this and so on. 00:18:59.73\00:19:01.07 They put blue light cameras down 00:19:01.10\00:19:02.44 and looked at all over and he said, 00:19:02.47\00:19:03.91 "You follow this wherever you go." 00:19:03.94\00:19:05.27 There for four stories in their building in Nashville. 00:19:05.31\00:19:07.58 He said "$16,000 is what it's worth." 00:19:07.61\00:19:10.35 Wow. 00:19:10.38\00:19:11.71 Four months later, we sold it for $20,000. 00:19:11.75\00:19:13.52 Amen. Wow. 00:19:13.55\00:19:15.52 And he said to Sharon, his wife, 00:19:15.55\00:19:17.02 "I wonder how many of these digital radios this would make?" 00:19:17.09\00:19:19.22 Amen. Yeah. 00:19:19.25\00:19:20.59 That to me was an encouragement more to me than to them. 00:19:23.29\00:19:26.39 But we've all been friends since that time. 00:19:26.43\00:19:28.16 And it's amazing to see how many people feel like, 00:19:28.20\00:19:31.10 "Well, I could do something." 00:19:31.13\00:19:32.73 And that's why we mentioned the guitar store. 00:19:32.77\00:19:35.00 It was actually featured in our transmissions, 00:19:35.04\00:19:37.04 you know, nine years ago. 00:19:37.11\00:19:39.21 But it continues to inspire me and many other people to think 00:19:39.24\00:19:42.38 you don't have to be very wealthy 00:19:42.41\00:19:43.75 to see something happen to advance the cause of God. 00:19:43.78\00:19:46.85 They were willing to do that. 00:19:46.92\00:19:48.32 Beautiful. 00:19:48.35\00:19:49.68 That's amazing. 00:19:49.72\00:19:51.05 You know, so when we think 00:19:51.09\00:19:52.42 it's just an instrument to be played, 00:19:52.45\00:19:54.26 the value and that's the perceived value 00:19:54.29\00:19:57.73 and the actual value is what we often miss. 00:19:57.76\00:20:00.40 But also let's add the other component. 00:20:00.43\00:20:02.76 The Lord multiplies the value, 00:20:02.80\00:20:04.80 when He knows it's going to be contributed to His work. 00:20:04.83\00:20:06.87 Beyond the appraisal. Beyond the appraisal. 00:20:06.94\00:20:09.14 And that's amazing. 00:20:09.17\00:20:10.51 So do you guys still accept guitars? 00:20:10.54\00:20:14.38 I think right now you'll accept anything. 00:20:14.41\00:20:16.51 Because God can turn one man's junk 00:20:16.54\00:20:20.02 into another man's treasure. 00:20:20.05\00:20:21.38 By no means is a guitar junk by it, 00:20:21.42\00:20:22.88 that's not the connection. 00:20:22.92\00:20:24.35 But praise God for moving hearts. 00:20:24.39\00:20:25.99 Dr. Lang video. 00:20:26.02\00:20:27.76 Sure. 00:20:27.79\00:20:29.12 That's my wife's brother... 00:20:29.16\00:20:30.83 Kathy, my wife, her brother and sister-in-law, 00:20:30.86\00:20:34.10 went to medical school and he did 00:20:34.13\00:20:35.60 and they moved to Florida, 00:20:35.63\00:20:37.37 and had a good practice down there and retired, 00:20:37.40\00:20:39.93 moved up all the way up to Tennessee. 00:20:39.97\00:20:43.10 And he came to one of our three... 00:20:43.14\00:20:45.74 We do awareness mission Sabbaths, 00:20:45.77\00:20:48.51 and he came to one of those and was so impressed. 00:20:48.54\00:20:50.55 Actually, he's very, he's German from North Dakota. 00:20:50.58\00:20:53.72 And very shy, I guess what he is. 00:20:53.75\00:20:57.39 He would never get up front, 00:20:57.42\00:20:58.75 but she talked him into go 00:20:58.79\00:21:00.12 in to preach a series of evangelistic meeting 00:21:00.16\00:21:02.22 just like... 00:21:02.26\00:21:04.99 I should probably begin with, we'll come to that later... 00:21:05.03\00:21:07.93 It changes life and this video, 00:21:07.96\00:21:11.20 you'll really enjoy about what he... 00:21:11.23\00:21:14.90 What they... 00:21:14.94\00:21:16.27 How they were influenced to really help. 00:21:16.30\00:21:17.87 Okay. I like to see that. 00:21:17.91\00:21:19.31 Finish the work. Yeah. 00:21:19.34\00:21:20.68 Dr. Lang video, let's check it out. 00:21:20.71\00:21:22.04 Let's see it. 00:21:22.08\00:21:23.45 I grew up a farm boy in North Dakota 00:21:30.99\00:21:35.32 till I went away to Union College 00:21:35.36\00:21:37.66 and met and married this young lady. 00:21:37.69\00:21:43.06 And two weeks before our fourth child was born, 00:21:43.10\00:21:47.14 we started medical school 00:21:47.17\00:21:49.74 and moved up here to this delightful Ooltewah, 00:21:49.77\00:21:53.14 Tennessee area and so we love it here. 00:21:53.17\00:21:57.18 When we went to the rally here and saw what AWR is doing, 00:22:01.72\00:22:06.76 and how they could get into areas 00:22:06.79\00:22:09.76 where far as I know, no other ministries can reach 00:22:09.79\00:22:15.73 and some of the stories that were given with Cami 00:22:15.76\00:22:20.17 and places they'd gone and Duane, 00:22:20.24\00:22:23.71 that really impressed me and I said 00:22:23.74\00:22:25.64 "This is a really worthy ministry." 00:22:25.67\00:22:30.25 I met Jeff Wilson 00:22:30.28\00:22:31.88 who said he could do our will and trust here. 00:22:31.91\00:22:37.02 It was painless. 00:22:37.09\00:22:39.19 It went smoothly, Jeff took care of it all 00:22:39.22\00:22:41.69 and to get the trust without any out of pocket costs 00:22:41.72\00:22:47.20 was way beyond what I expected. 00:22:47.23\00:22:50.87 Now, does God ever run into a wall? 00:23:02.51\00:23:05.81 Never. Never. 00:23:05.85\00:23:07.22 Okay. 00:23:07.25\00:23:08.58 So this Dr. Lang's video, 00:23:08.62\00:23:12.22 how did this encourage your faith? 00:23:12.25\00:23:14.42 Oh, actually, for my wife a lot and for me too, 00:23:14.46\00:23:18.93 he was in very good, health, retired, went to Tennessee, 00:23:18.96\00:23:24.07 like southern and here a couple months ago 00:23:24.10\00:23:26.84 he was on a ladder and fell off the ladder 00:23:26.87\00:23:29.47 and he died then. 00:23:29.50\00:23:31.47 So this is very meaningful to our family. 00:23:31.51\00:23:34.08 But again, it's a, you know, as we work together, 00:23:34.11\00:23:38.58 like I think they had said or Jeff, 00:23:38.61\00:23:42.22 one of you said that, you know, there is... 00:23:42.25\00:23:44.02 God has plenty of resources to finish the work. 00:23:44.09\00:23:46.96 And I believe I'm seeing things now 00:23:46.99\00:23:49.12 like I've never seen before. 00:23:49.16\00:23:50.53 After 40 years of international evangelism, 00:23:50.56\00:23:53.03 God is doing something in incredible always. 00:23:53.06\00:23:55.80 We're seeing, we're seeing rebels. 00:23:55.83\00:23:57.77 We're seeing drug cartel. 00:23:57.80\00:23:59.80 We're seeing some of the worst assassins 00:23:59.83\00:24:03.17 in the world coming to know Jesus. 00:24:03.20\00:24:05.14 Amen. Wow. 00:24:05.17\00:24:06.51 It's just amazing. Time is short. 00:24:06.54\00:24:07.88 You know, that's the mission of Christ. 00:24:07.91\00:24:09.24 He's come to seek and to save those who are lost. 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.38 Yeah. 00:24:11.41\00:24:12.75 And He said to the Pharisees, 00:24:12.78\00:24:14.45 "Because you say you are, well, I can't help you." 00:24:14.48\00:24:17.79 You don't need a physician. 00:24:17.82\00:24:19.22 But so it doesn't matter the condition 00:24:19.25\00:24:21.12 because God is... Jesus is the master physician. 00:24:21.16\00:24:24.99 Now, Jeff, the Doreen testimony, 00:24:25.03\00:24:27.13 tell us about that. 00:24:27.20\00:24:28.63 Doreen is a special friend of mine. 00:24:28.66\00:24:32.67 We met about six years ago, 00:24:32.70\00:24:34.17 but way back in April 24 of 1993, 00:24:34.24\00:24:39.31 she sent $10, 12 months to Adventist World Radio. 00:24:39.34\00:24:43.65 And over the years that $10 became $20, and $25, 00:24:43.68\00:24:47.42 and $50, and $100, and $500. 00:24:47.45\00:24:51.35 I only had a post office box, 00:24:51.39\00:24:54.06 but I was under impression from the Lord 00:24:54.09\00:24:55.92 I needed to visit this woman 00:24:55.96\00:24:57.69 and that's when she'd given 00:24:57.73\00:24:59.59 probably about $80,000 to our ministry. 00:24:59.63\00:25:03.10 I had just out of post office box 00:25:03.13\00:25:04.93 and I finally found a number that worked. 00:25:04.97\00:25:07.44 And I called and I got her husband. 00:25:07.47\00:25:10.01 And he was a very reclusive type man. 00:25:10.04\00:25:13.21 And he said, "Well, you can't come 00:25:13.24\00:25:14.68 and visit my house." 00:25:14.71\00:25:16.04 But it was kind of funny 00:25:16.08\00:25:17.45 because he answered the phone and I could hear him say, 00:25:17.48\00:25:19.45 "Doreen, the head honcho from Adventist World Radio 00:25:19.48\00:25:22.85 is on the line to talk to you." 00:25:22.88\00:25:25.62 And I was trying to say how do I respond to her 00:25:25.65\00:25:27.59 'cause I didn't know I was a honcho, 00:25:27.66\00:25:29.39 let alone a head honcho. 00:25:29.42\00:25:31.79 But we met at a grocery store, and we talked 00:25:31.83\00:25:34.73 and she shared with me her excitement 00:25:34.76\00:25:37.07 about reaching people 00:25:37.10\00:25:38.43 that can't be reached in any other way. 00:25:38.47\00:25:41.37 And I started teaching sometimes 00:25:41.40\00:25:42.94 in her Sabbath school class at Caringbah Church. 00:25:42.97\00:25:46.31 And one day Doreen said to me, 00:25:46.34\00:25:51.15 "We have all this artwork." 00:25:51.18\00:25:52.81 And her house was full of... 00:25:52.85\00:25:56.58 If you buy at Walmart it's called a vase, 00:25:56.62\00:25:58.45 if you buy at those fancy stores it's a vase. 00:25:58.49\00:26:01.46 Vases. Annunciation. 00:26:01.49\00:26:03.22 Vases. Yes. 00:26:03.26\00:26:05.19 Some of them six feet tall 00:26:05.23\00:26:06.80 and some small ones in the cabinets. 00:26:06.83\00:26:08.90 Hundreds and hundreds of these. 00:26:08.93\00:26:10.27 She and her husband had travelled the world on... 00:26:10.30\00:26:13.87 not on cruise ships but on merchant ships 00:26:13.94\00:26:16.64 because he didn't like people. 00:26:16.71\00:26:18.37 They even were at Pitcairn three times. 00:26:18.41\00:26:20.88 And she said... 00:26:20.91\00:26:22.24 I said, "But, Doreen, this is your life. 00:26:22.28\00:26:23.75 These have so many memories." 00:26:23.78\00:26:25.11 She says, "I want this... 00:26:25.15\00:26:26.82 It's just stuff. 00:26:26.85\00:26:28.72 I want it to help finish God's work." 00:26:28.75\00:26:32.12 So I think we have a picture there of Doreen 00:26:32.15\00:26:35.49 in her kitchen, 00:26:35.52\00:26:36.86 and another picture 00:26:36.93\00:26:38.46 with a young man named Jim Fren. 00:26:38.49\00:26:41.10 Jim, we found Jim by God's grace. 00:26:41.13\00:26:45.37 He actually has a business of estate sales. 00:26:45.40\00:26:50.71 And he told us... 00:26:50.74\00:26:52.07 you know, Japanese artwork, Chinese artwork, 00:26:52.11\00:26:55.38 German stein's, walking sticks, ivory, 00:26:55.41\00:26:58.88 people used to collect this stuff, 00:26:58.91\00:27:00.25 they don't collect it anymore. 00:27:00.32\00:27:01.65 You know, same with stamps and coins. 00:27:01.68\00:27:03.49 They're not worth what they used to be 00:27:03.52\00:27:05.19 in the old days. 00:27:05.22\00:27:06.55 But he said, "I'm committed to this. 00:27:06.59\00:27:09.09 This is for God's work." 00:27:09.12\00:27:10.46 He wasn't an Adventist but... 00:27:10.53\00:27:12.63 And by God's grace, he sold it. 00:27:12.66\00:27:15.60 And we got a little over $80,000 for her artwork. 00:27:15.63\00:27:20.87 And I went back to visit Doreen and her walls are bare 00:27:20.94\00:27:23.61 and their shelves are bare. 00:27:23.64\00:27:24.97 And I said "Doreen, 00:27:25.01\00:27:26.71 aren't you sad for losing all this?" 00:27:26.78\00:27:28.54 And she had this huge smile on her face 00:27:28.58\00:27:30.48 that you measured with a yardstick not a ruler. 00:27:30.55\00:27:33.35 She said, "No, it's going to benefit God's work." 00:27:33.42\00:27:37.79 We started talking to her 00:27:37.82\00:27:41.06 about our estate plan. 00:27:41.09\00:27:44.43 When her husband Richard died a few years ago, 00:27:44.46\00:27:47.93 all they had was what we call a holographic will. 00:27:47.96\00:27:50.57 That means a will that you wrote out by hand. 00:27:50.60\00:27:53.23 And this was an estate 00:27:53.27\00:27:54.70 that was worth several million dollars, 00:27:54.74\00:27:56.91 and it was going to be transferred 00:27:56.94\00:27:58.44 by a handwritten will, 00:27:58.47\00:27:59.81 not an attorney had had anything to do with. 00:27:59.84\00:28:02.14 Well, we prayed a lot over that. 00:28:02.18\00:28:04.68 And we got a good attorney to represent her. 00:28:04.71\00:28:07.52 And she told me when she went in to see the judge, 00:28:07.55\00:28:09.88 the judge said, 00:28:09.92\00:28:11.25 "How many years were you married to Richard?" 00:28:11.29\00:28:13.25 And she said, "Sixty seven." 00:28:13.29\00:28:14.72 He said, "Case dismissed. 00:28:14.76\00:28:16.09 Everything goes to her." 00:28:16.12\00:28:17.63 Because in this handwritten will, 00:28:17.66\00:28:19.03 he said, she had lived like 90 days 00:28:19.06\00:28:21.03 or something, and so forth. 00:28:21.06\00:28:22.40 Anyway, so then we had a very good attorney 00:28:22.43\00:28:24.97 assist her and her son David, 00:28:25.00\00:28:28.14 came back with her from the attorney's office 00:28:28.17\00:28:30.81 when they signed the documents. 00:28:30.84\00:28:32.74 And she said... 00:28:32.77\00:28:34.11 And David said to me, "Elder Wilson, 00:28:34.18\00:28:35.74 I want you know that my sister and I 00:28:35.78\00:28:37.35 are totally behind what our mother is doing. 00:28:37.38\00:28:40.52 And in her will she leaves a million dollars in cash 00:28:40.55\00:28:44.09 to Adventist World Radio and her home. 00:28:44.12\00:28:46.96 And at this point, our home is worth $1 million. 00:28:46.99\00:28:51.16 So $10 over about a 27 year period, 00:28:51.19\00:28:55.06 more and more commitment to God. 00:28:55.10\00:28:56.70 But what we are seeing is in our donors 00:28:56.77\00:29:01.14 and you see it with your donors at 3ABN as well. 00:29:01.17\00:29:04.31 They have a feeling that we're near the end. 00:29:04.34\00:29:06.27 Yeah. That's right. 00:29:06.31\00:29:07.64 Jesus is coming soon. 00:29:07.68\00:29:09.01 We need to put it in God's work now, 00:29:09.04\00:29:11.55 we don't want it in our pocket when God comes 00:29:11.58\00:29:14.48 and Doreen is a wonderful story 00:29:14.52\00:29:17.79 of that in a person's life 00:29:17.82\00:29:21.46 who is very, very committed to the Lord. 00:29:21.49\00:29:24.06 And that commitment grows, yeah. 00:29:24.13\00:29:25.63 Amen. 00:29:25.66\00:29:27.00 And once again, it's true you cannot outgive God. 00:29:27.03\00:29:30.07 If you look at the cadence here, honey, 00:29:30.10\00:29:31.60 we're looking at the ways that God sustains His work. 00:29:31.63\00:29:34.34 And the point that you made is very well taken. 00:29:34.37\00:29:36.54 We're living in the time of the end 00:29:36.57\00:29:37.91 and you think about all the things 00:29:37.94\00:29:39.27 that people possess. 00:29:39.31\00:29:40.68 We are praying that you possess things 00:29:40.71\00:29:42.91 and things don't possess you. 00:29:42.94\00:29:44.88 Because these things really as you pointed out, Jeff, 00:29:44.91\00:29:47.05 I think they got in flames one day. 00:29:47.12\00:29:49.15 The guitar, you know, 00:29:49.18\00:29:50.52 what happens when the house gets set on fire 00:29:50.59\00:29:52.19 and we saw an example of that in the Paradise fire 00:29:52.22\00:29:54.62 and you can imagine multiple, 00:29:54.66\00:29:56.19 millions of possessions just went up in flames, 00:29:56.22\00:29:59.26 and could not help the work of the Lord at all. 00:29:59.29\00:30:01.93 So God allows these small tragedies 00:30:01.96\00:30:03.70 to help us see that either it has value now 00:30:03.77\00:30:06.77 to advance the cause of God or one day, 00:30:06.84\00:30:08.97 you know, our riches, as James says, 00:30:09.00\00:30:10.91 will be crank up as a witness against us. 00:30:10.94\00:30:13.71 So if you think about supporting the work of God, 00:30:13.78\00:30:15.94 and you're surrounded with stuff, 00:30:15.98\00:30:17.58 you know, we're getting older, chronology doesn't reverse. 00:30:17.65\00:30:21.12 The best time to support the work of God is now. 00:30:21.15\00:30:23.59 Now what do we have, honey? 00:30:23.62\00:30:24.95 Now, Ed, you want to share a story with us, don't you, 00:30:24.99\00:30:27.46 about Alice Hammond? 00:30:27.49\00:30:29.02 I do indeed. 00:30:29.06\00:30:30.53 Kathy and I did some visiting in Washington State 00:30:30.56\00:30:32.46 a few years ago, and we met a dear lady, 00:30:32.49\00:30:34.36 a retired schoolteacher. 00:30:34.40\00:30:35.73 She taught in the Adventist elementary school system 00:30:35.76\00:30:37.97 for many years. 00:30:38.00\00:30:39.33 And still daily prays for all the students 00:30:39.37\00:30:41.17 that she had, and so on and loves them and so on, 00:30:41.20\00:30:43.10 a dear sweet lady. 00:30:43.14\00:30:44.74 And we told her about the way that she could support. 00:30:44.77\00:30:47.41 She was doing a monthly thing, 00:30:47.48\00:30:48.81 a small amount each month. 00:30:48.84\00:30:50.28 But then she called me back and she said, 00:30:50.35\00:30:51.98 "I think I'm ready to do something bigger." 00:30:52.01\00:30:54.15 So I went to see her and this is an amazing story. 00:30:54.22\00:30:57.39 I flew into Seattle, 00:30:57.42\00:30:58.95 and I put in my GPS Bremerton, Washington 00:30:58.99\00:31:01.79 and I was thinking about going south on I5, 00:31:01.82\00:31:03.73 then up the other side as many of you have done before 00:31:03.76\00:31:05.86 around the Puget Sound. 00:31:05.89\00:31:07.43 But my GPS took me a strange way 00:31:07.50\00:31:10.27 and ended up right at the ferry. 00:31:10.30\00:31:12.20 So I'm going to take the ferry across 00:31:12.23\00:31:13.64 that's going around, it was actually cheaper. 00:31:13.67\00:31:15.27 It's only like $5 Washington State ferry system. 00:31:15.30\00:31:19.14 At sundown it's real beautiful right over there 00:31:19.17\00:31:21.51 but when I got over there, 00:31:21.54\00:31:23.18 there's these huge aircraft carriers 00:31:23.21\00:31:25.51 bigger than cities in there 00:31:25.55\00:31:27.12 'cause that's the Bremerton Naval airbase, Naval shipyard. 00:31:27.15\00:31:30.49 Okay. 00:31:30.52\00:31:31.85 Well, this has a point to it as well. 00:31:31.89\00:31:33.22 But anyway, when I went to see Alice Hammond, 00:31:33.25\00:31:35.59 she said, "I've decided to do an annuity 00:31:35.62\00:31:38.36 with Adventist World Radio." 00:31:38.39\00:31:39.89 And she said, "I wish I had more, 00:31:39.93\00:31:41.26 but it's only 150,000." 00:31:41.30\00:31:43.16 This is a retired Adventist schoolteacher. 00:31:43.20\00:31:45.43 This is amazing because she said, 00:31:45.47\00:31:47.07 "I don't want to die 00:31:47.14\00:31:48.47 with a lot of stuff in my possession. 00:31:48.50\00:31:49.84 I want it to go to the cause of God and so on." 00:31:49.87\00:31:51.24 So this is incredible to me that this happened. 00:31:51.27\00:31:54.28 The reason I mentioned her by name 00:31:54.31\00:31:55.64 is we used to keep everybody fairly private as you know, 00:31:55.68\00:31:58.55 but she passed away this year. 00:31:58.58\00:31:59.91 So most of that came 00:31:59.95\00:32:01.28 into the Adventist World Radio already 00:32:01.32\00:32:03.49 but since I was already over there, 00:32:03.52\00:32:05.62 I was looking around on our website, 00:32:05.65\00:32:08.06 our private donor base... 00:32:08.09\00:32:11.49 Donor list. 00:32:11.53\00:32:13.06 And I found that someone had just contributed 00:32:13.09\00:32:14.93 $10,000 in cash 00:32:14.96\00:32:17.47 to the Arabic language ministry that we were starting up. 00:32:17.50\00:32:21.17 Now this is very interesting 00:32:21.20\00:32:22.54 because I called the person I said, Tim, 00:32:22.57\00:32:24.81 would it be all right 00:32:24.84\00:32:26.17 if I could stop by and see you?" 00:32:26.21\00:32:27.58 And I said... 00:32:27.61\00:32:28.94 you know, I thought when I made the appointment 00:32:28.98\00:32:30.31 that it was gonna be somebody my age 00:32:30.35\00:32:31.68 that was retired 00:32:31.71\00:32:33.05 and had their disposable assets and so on. 00:32:33.08\00:32:36.15 When I got there, however, 00:32:36.18\00:32:37.82 I thought I was at the wrong address 00:32:37.85\00:32:39.19 because the address was a basement apartment. 00:32:39.22\00:32:41.99 There wasn't a fancy car parked outside. 00:32:42.02\00:32:44.33 It was a used Toyota Corolla, an older model. 00:32:44.36\00:32:47.50 And when I talked, it was Tim and Kirsten Swope 00:32:47.53\00:32:50.17 when I got there. 00:32:50.20\00:32:51.53 They had just given $10,000. 00:32:51.57\00:32:53.10 Now they had just recently finished college. 00:32:53.13\00:32:55.20 She was expecting their first child 00:32:55.24\00:32:56.57 and how in the world they ever gave $10,000. 00:32:56.60\00:32:59.04 I had tears in my eyes 00:32:59.07\00:33:00.41 almost the whole time I was there, 00:33:00.48\00:33:01.81 I could not believe this. 00:33:01.84\00:33:03.18 And this is an amazing story that they did that. 00:33:03.21\00:33:05.98 And AWR prepared them a very nice plaque 00:33:06.01\00:33:10.29 with a picture of an Arab guy on it 00:33:10.32\00:33:11.65 and the language and thanked him and so on 00:33:11.69\00:33:13.02 and send it back to them and it's on their wall. 00:33:13.05\00:33:14.99 But the amazing part about it is it doesn't stop there. 00:33:15.02\00:33:17.73 The next summer, I was at ASI 00:33:17.76\00:33:19.53 and I was at a table at one of the meals. 00:33:19.56\00:33:21.86 And a couple sat by me and they said, 00:33:21.90\00:33:23.30 "We know you're from AWR, what's happening." 00:33:23.37\00:33:25.20 So I told him this story, 00:33:25.23\00:33:26.84 just about everybody around the table 00:33:26.87\00:33:28.20 got tears in their eyes and couldn't believe it. 00:33:28.24\00:33:29.80 So this couple were David and Esther Kim said to me, 00:33:29.84\00:33:33.88 "We want to do something." 00:33:33.91\00:33:35.24 They called me, they'd asked for one of my cards, 00:33:35.28\00:33:36.85 and about a month later they called me and said 00:33:36.88\00:33:38.21 "We want to make a pledge to the Lord. 00:33:38.25\00:33:40.42 We want to conceive a child. 00:33:40.45\00:33:43.49 And if that happens, 00:33:43.52\00:33:44.85 we're going to give $10,000 to AWR." 00:33:44.89\00:33:46.62 Wow. That was the Lord saying. 00:33:46.65\00:33:48.82 Taking the lead of the other one. 00:33:48.86\00:33:50.73 Yeah. 00:33:50.76\00:33:52.09 Then they said "When the child is born, 00:33:52.13\00:33:53.46 we're going to give another $10,000." 00:33:53.50\00:33:54.83 Wow. 00:33:54.86\00:33:56.20 Which they've done both. 00:33:56.23\00:33:57.57 And the interesting thing is they want to do 00:33:57.60\00:33:58.93 a special project 00:33:58.97\00:34:00.30 so just at that time the Doma project in Africa 00:34:00.34\00:34:01.77 was opening up and Duane said, 00:34:01.80\00:34:04.47 "Would you be interested in this project?" 00:34:04.51\00:34:05.84 Would they? 00:34:05.87\00:34:07.21 Yeah, they wanted to do something not just in general. 00:34:07.28\00:34:09.08 By not just the general donation. 00:34:09.11\00:34:10.45 Yeah. And so that's what they... 00:34:10.48\00:34:11.81 So it just keeps going 00:34:11.85\00:34:13.18 as people learn about these stories. 00:34:13.21\00:34:14.82 The amazing thing is, 00:34:14.85\00:34:16.18 even young people can do things. 00:34:16.22\00:34:17.59 That's what the point of this. Amen. 00:34:17.62\00:34:18.95 Yeah, I'm glad you brought that up 00:34:18.99\00:34:20.32 because a lot of times people think, 00:34:20.36\00:34:21.69 "Well, you know, we have to retire. 00:34:21.72\00:34:23.06 We got 40 years left, we got 30 years left," 00:34:23.09\00:34:24.43 and in this world today, 00:34:24.46\00:34:25.96 all you have left is the next breath. 00:34:25.99\00:34:28.00 You don't have a whole lot of time. 00:34:28.03\00:34:29.73 But it's exciting to see that young people 00:34:29.76\00:34:32.43 in this altruistic society people are thinking 00:34:32.47\00:34:35.24 about how to advance the cause of God. 00:34:35.27\00:34:37.11 Yeah. 00:34:37.14\00:34:38.47 My question is, how many languages is AWR... 00:34:38.51\00:34:41.98 We're broadcasting in about 100, 00:34:42.01\00:34:43.55 just about 100 to 130 00:34:43.58\00:34:45.95 and we're expanding to 500, that's our goal. 00:34:45.98\00:34:48.15 Yes. Wow. 00:34:48.18\00:34:49.52 Wow. That's amazing. 00:34:49.55\00:34:50.89 We have 1,000 stations around the world 00:34:50.92\00:34:52.25 so we reach the globe, 00:34:52.29\00:34:53.86 from Guam alone we reach a third of the world. 00:34:53.89\00:34:56.06 Wow. On shortwave. 00:34:56.09\00:34:57.43 You still do the radio one. 00:34:57.46\00:34:58.79 Yeah. Yeah. Oh, yes. 00:34:58.83\00:35:00.20 We do that. 00:35:00.23\00:35:01.56 We do internet, we do shortwave, 00:35:01.60\00:35:02.93 we do DAB, 00:35:02.96\00:35:04.30 we're starting a new DAB station in all of Paris... 00:35:04.33\00:35:05.67 What is DAB? 00:35:05.70\00:35:07.04 Digital Audio Broadcasting. 00:35:07.07\00:35:08.64 Okay, yeah I got that. 00:35:08.67\00:35:10.01 So it's a brand new, 00:35:10.04\00:35:11.37 brand new in Europe and so we'll reach all of Paris. 00:35:11.41\00:35:14.41 We're doing the same thing in London, 00:35:14.44\00:35:15.78 we were reaching all London now 24/7. 00:35:15.81\00:35:17.55 And you know what? 00:35:17.58\00:35:18.91 The way the world is going nowadays it... 00:35:18.95\00:35:20.32 You don't have to knock on doors 00:35:20.35\00:35:21.68 or kick down doors, you can post, 00:35:21.72\00:35:23.39 just send it by satellite, by signal, 00:35:23.42\00:35:24.99 by some kind of digital media and it makes it there. 00:35:25.02\00:35:28.09 I don't know, are you familiar with the farmer video? 00:35:28.12\00:35:30.83 The farmer story? 00:35:30.86\00:35:32.39 Tell us about that. I love that. 00:35:32.43\00:35:33.80 Yes, this is a precious video of a man 00:35:33.83\00:35:37.57 that wanted to leave a legacy and... 00:35:37.60\00:35:40.94 And let's just roll the video 00:35:40.97\00:35:42.30 so you can see how God used him and what He's done in his life. 00:35:42.34\00:35:46.68 Okay. 00:35:46.71\00:35:48.04 I grew up in Indiana, 00:35:53.62\00:35:54.95 and I've been a farmer all my life. 00:35:54.98\00:35:57.95 My father, every time we plant a field, 00:35:57.99\00:36:01.49 when we got through we'd always kneel down 00:36:01.52\00:36:03.32 and have prayers. 00:36:03.36\00:36:04.69 We've done our part, now the Lord will do His, 00:36:04.73\00:36:07.50 and He always come through. 00:36:07.53\00:36:09.50 After praying about it, 00:36:13.17\00:36:14.54 my wife and I decided to do a gift annuity 00:36:14.57\00:36:17.31 through Adventist World Radio. 00:36:17.34\00:36:19.64 It goes to people that normally you're not going to hear. 00:36:19.67\00:36:23.75 And that's what our three angels' message 00:36:23.78\00:36:26.82 is all about, to every nation, kindred, tongue and people. 00:36:26.85\00:36:32.15 When you're a farmer, 00:36:32.19\00:36:33.56 you don't have a retirement plan. 00:36:33.59\00:36:35.92 It was a good way to supplement our retirement. 00:36:35.96\00:36:39.33 It's been a blessing to us, 00:36:39.36\00:36:41.13 and I know it's going to be a blessing 00:36:41.16\00:36:42.50 to those others around the world. 00:36:42.53\00:36:44.43 Yeah, I met Bill Mann, 00:36:50.74\00:36:52.07 he is a wonderful friend of mine 00:36:52.11\00:36:53.91 and we recently visited him in the hospital. 00:36:53.98\00:36:56.08 He fell and broke his shoulder. 00:36:56.11\00:36:59.01 And we took along the picture of this video 00:36:59.05\00:37:02.35 and he's so thrilled 00:37:02.38\00:37:03.72 that his testimony is being shared. 00:37:03.79\00:37:07.09 I did his... 00:37:07.16\00:37:08.49 helped him in his wife do their estate plan 00:37:08.52\00:37:10.93 couple of years ago. 00:37:10.96\00:37:12.43 And everybody, you know, you can't predict, 00:37:12.46\00:37:14.50 everybody thought Bill was gonna die 00:37:14.53\00:37:16.23 'cause he's a little bit overweight 00:37:16.26\00:37:17.60 and all that sort of thing. 00:37:17.63\00:37:18.97 Well, it was his very healthy wife 00:37:19.00\00:37:21.07 that had a brain aneurysm and died very quickly. 00:37:21.10\00:37:24.84 And it was... 00:37:24.87\00:37:26.21 It would have been a huge problem 00:37:26.24\00:37:27.58 had they not already set their estate plan in place, 00:37:27.61\00:37:31.41 which included a power of attorney for healthcare 00:37:31.45\00:37:34.65 and a living will. 00:37:34.68\00:37:36.25 That solved problems 00:37:36.28\00:37:37.95 that would have come up into the family 00:37:37.99\00:37:39.72 because they now knew what their mother wanted. 00:37:39.75\00:37:45.23 We along with 3ABN... 00:37:45.26\00:37:46.83 and Ed and I were just in the foyer 00:37:46.90\00:37:48.70 before this meeting started with Joe Hunt, 00:37:48.73\00:37:52.13 your panned giving director. 00:37:52.17\00:37:53.64 We are colleagues, we worked together. 00:37:53.67\00:37:56.00 Many of the people we work with, they don't... 00:37:56.04\00:37:58.51 Go ahead. They don't, right, Ed. 00:37:58.54\00:38:00.28 They don't want to leave to one ministry, 00:38:00.31\00:38:02.21 they want to leave to a broad ministry 00:38:02.24\00:38:04.51 that's reaching the world, worldwide. 00:38:04.55\00:38:07.95 And it's a joy to help people do what they want to do. 00:38:07.98\00:38:13.96 Sometimes people think, "Well, we're worried 00:38:13.99\00:38:15.72 because they're going to tell us how to give." 00:38:15.76\00:38:18.33 Giving is a very personal thing 00:38:18.36\00:38:19.93 between individual and the Lord. 00:38:20.00\00:38:22.70 And what we do is facilitate what they want to do 00:38:22.73\00:38:25.77 by bringing along the legal counsel 00:38:25.80\00:38:28.30 that they need to draft documents 00:38:28.34\00:38:30.11 and look at the bigger picture. 00:38:30.14\00:38:31.47 We want, Ellen White talked about preparing a plan 00:38:31.51\00:38:34.68 that stood the test of law. 00:38:34.71\00:38:37.68 And, of course, a holographic 00:38:37.71\00:38:39.05 will may or may not stand the test of law. 00:38:39.08\00:38:41.15 But if an attorney who's licensed 00:38:41.18\00:38:43.08 and that state has prepared that plan, it's strong. 00:38:43.12\00:38:47.16 And we are fighting the enemy, 00:38:47.19\00:38:50.06 and the enemy does not want even $1 00:38:50.13\00:38:52.59 to come into God's work 00:38:52.63\00:38:54.00 either now or through an estate plan. 00:38:54.03\00:38:56.33 So we're in a war 00:38:56.36\00:38:57.87 and we have to have very solid legal counsel on our side 00:38:57.90\00:39:01.87 to listen to what to people want to do, 00:39:01.90\00:39:04.24 and help them to do it. 00:39:04.31\00:39:06.47 And it's a blessing to them not only in their final gift, 00:39:06.51\00:39:11.25 but in their life right now to have their life in order. 00:39:11.28\00:39:15.08 We like to remind people 00:39:15.12\00:39:16.45 that if you have your estate plan in order, 00:39:16.48\00:39:19.22 you'll generally live 10 to 13 years 00:39:19.25\00:39:21.56 longer than if you don't... 00:39:21.59\00:39:23.76 I like to tell people 00:39:23.83\00:39:25.16 that because people are superstitious. 00:39:25.19\00:39:28.86 Well, if I plan for death, I'm gonna die. 00:39:28.90\00:39:31.40 I've found that all over the world. 00:39:31.43\00:39:33.67 The truth is people 00:39:33.74\00:39:35.24 who have their estate plan in order 00:39:35.27\00:39:36.94 also fasten their seat belts, they eat right, 00:39:37.01\00:39:39.14 they study their Bible, they live longer. 00:39:39.17\00:39:41.38 And they have less stress 00:39:41.41\00:39:42.74 because the will is not left up to whoever else. 00:39:42.78\00:39:46.58 Wow. 00:39:46.61\00:39:47.95 What about the Salt Lake City donor? 00:39:47.98\00:39:49.42 Well, that's another that's... 00:39:49.45\00:39:51.55 I was just there last week 00:39:51.59\00:39:52.92 to settle that up with the Schaffners, 00:39:52.95\00:39:55.52 sweet couple, Carl and Nancy. 00:39:55.56\00:39:58.53 It's a kind of a charitable gift annuity 00:39:58.56\00:40:00.83 we don't talk a lot about and we should more than we do. 00:40:00.90\00:40:04.07 Most people interested in a charitable gift annuity 00:40:04.10\00:40:06.57 are in their 70s or 80s or 90s. 00:40:06.60\00:40:08.84 And that's because the older you are, 00:40:08.87\00:40:11.37 the higher the return back to you. 00:40:11.41\00:40:13.58 You know that because you do a lot of those here 00:40:13.61\00:40:15.61 at 3ABN. 00:40:15.64\00:40:17.15 What Carl and Nancy did was something a little different. 00:40:17.18\00:40:19.65 It's called a deferred charitable gift annuity. 00:40:19.68\00:40:23.99 And what Carl was doing 00:40:24.02\00:40:25.35 is what a lot of younger people need to start doing. 00:40:25.39\00:40:28.92 You thought, think about planning for retirement, 00:40:28.96\00:40:31.99 you need to diversify. 00:40:32.03\00:40:34.30 You know, my parents dependent on social security, 00:40:34.33\00:40:36.33 that was enough. 00:40:36.36\00:40:37.70 That's not enough for anybody anymore. 00:40:37.73\00:40:39.20 You need social security, 00:40:39.23\00:40:40.84 you need hopefully a employment retirement plan, 00:40:40.87\00:40:45.14 but then you need other resources. 00:40:45.17\00:40:47.78 A deferred gift annuity is a contract 00:40:47.81\00:40:50.05 between the donor and 3ABN or Adventist World Radio, 00:40:50.08\00:40:54.48 or the church in which they make the gift now, 00:40:54.52\00:40:58.95 the church invests that gift, 00:40:58.99\00:41:00.89 but they don't receive their payments 00:41:00.96\00:41:02.69 till sometime in the future. 00:41:02.72\00:41:04.66 Which means they're getting a higher rate of return 00:41:04.69\00:41:06.46 when they get it. 00:41:06.49\00:41:07.83 What Carl did, 00:41:07.86\00:41:09.20 and a lot of people would think about this. 00:41:09.23\00:41:10.77 He's retiring this June. 00:41:10.80\00:41:12.50 When he does at 66, 00:41:12.53\00:41:14.27 but he doesn't want to take social security 00:41:14.30\00:41:16.10 till he gets to 70 because there'll be more. 00:41:16.14\00:41:19.17 So his payments, 00:41:19.21\00:41:20.58 his deferred gift annuity payments 00:41:20.61\00:41:22.01 are going to start in this June and fill in that gap 00:41:22.04\00:41:26.05 until he reaches his older retirement age 00:41:26.08\00:41:31.12 when he'll get more social security 00:41:31.15\00:41:32.59 than if he'd started at a younger time. 00:41:32.62\00:41:34.46 So we've done three with him 00:41:34.49\00:41:35.99 and they're very happy with those, 00:41:36.02\00:41:37.86 and we hope to do more 00:41:37.89\00:41:39.23 and some of the 3ABN donors would be interested 00:41:39.26\00:41:42.36 in that concept too. 00:41:42.40\00:41:43.77 I like the way you brought that out 00:41:43.80\00:41:45.13 that one of the things that you don't do 00:41:45.17\00:41:47.44 and we don't do either, 00:41:47.47\00:41:48.90 is to tell people how to invest in it. 00:41:48.94\00:41:50.34 Exactly. 00:41:50.41\00:41:51.74 To give it because the work of the Lord is a conviction 00:41:51.77\00:41:54.31 that God puts on each one of our hearts 00:41:54.34\00:41:56.31 and there are people that give here, 00:41:56.34\00:41:58.01 there are people who give to Adventist World Radio, 00:41:58.05\00:41:59.55 and other ministries, or even the church. 00:41:59.58\00:42:00.92 They give to both. 00:42:00.95\00:42:02.28 And they give. 00:42:02.32\00:42:03.69 I like the planned giving, the deferred annuities. 00:42:03.72\00:42:05.45 And so you might be interested 00:42:05.49\00:42:06.86 in finding out how and what the difference is. 00:42:06.89\00:42:09.46 And before the program is done, 00:42:09.49\00:42:10.83 we'll tell you how to get information 00:42:10.86\00:42:12.19 and even how to contact 3ABN to find out more about that. 00:42:12.23\00:42:14.93 Most of the people who give to us give to you too. 00:42:14.96\00:42:18.00 That's right. That's right. 00:42:18.03\00:42:19.37 We're partnering in it. Yeah, we are. 00:42:19.40\00:42:20.84 And tell all the world. 00:42:20.87\00:42:22.20 Yeah. Amen. 00:42:22.24\00:42:23.61 Now, Ed, what is the philosophy of giving? 00:42:23.64\00:42:25.57 Well, this is interesting. 00:42:25.61\00:42:26.98 And this is a little bit based on just my own view 00:42:27.01\00:42:30.15 of the charitable gift annuities that I have done. 00:42:30.18\00:42:32.65 Okay. 00:42:32.68\00:42:34.02 About 80% of them are done by widows. 00:42:34.05\00:42:37.39 So I just looked at a big long list of several dozen 00:42:37.42\00:42:39.42 that I've done 00:42:39.45\00:42:40.79 and men are here and there a little bit 00:42:40.86\00:42:42.22 but most of them are done by widows. 00:42:42.26\00:42:44.46 Now think about this... 00:42:44.49\00:42:46.49 The only offering that Jesus ever commanded 00:42:46.53\00:42:48.76 was to a widow lady 00:42:48.80\00:42:50.17 who gave her last two cents to the church 00:42:50.20\00:42:51.53 that was just about to kill him. 00:42:51.57\00:42:54.14 So even though the church may have problems, 00:42:54.17\00:42:55.77 God says "This is My church. 00:42:55.80\00:42:57.24 It's the apple of My eye." 00:42:57.31\00:42:59.01 Isn't that true? Amen. 00:42:59.04\00:43:00.38 So we will do the best we can. 00:43:00.41\00:43:02.18 So the most amazing thing is that frequently 00:43:02.21\00:43:05.21 when a lady becomes a widow, 00:43:05.25\00:43:07.55 the husband has had a major part 00:43:07.62\00:43:09.05 in the management of their money, 00:43:09.08\00:43:10.42 and they don't know what to do. 00:43:10.49\00:43:11.82 They've got investments here and investments there, 00:43:11.85\00:43:13.19 property here, property there, and so on. 00:43:13.22\00:43:15.22 And so, Jeff, and I talk to them 00:43:15.26\00:43:17.43 about several things first. 00:43:17.46\00:43:19.16 Are your debts all paid? 00:43:19.19\00:43:20.53 Do you have sufficient income through each month 00:43:20.60\00:43:21.93 to take care of your needs and so on? 00:43:21.96\00:43:23.50 Is your family taking care of your need 00:43:23.57\00:43:24.90 and helping and so on? 00:43:24.93\00:43:26.27 But when they have assets that are beyond that, 00:43:26.30\00:43:29.74 tangible assets, we say, why don't you get an annuity 00:43:29.77\00:43:32.64 that will assist you during your retirement years, 00:43:32.67\00:43:35.94 the balance will go to the God's 00:43:35.98\00:43:37.35 cause when you pass away. 00:43:37.38\00:43:38.81 And this is something else we tell people, 00:43:38.85\00:43:40.32 "If you want to you can revoke your interest 00:43:40.35\00:43:41.92 in your annuity, 00:43:41.95\00:43:43.89 and let the church have it right away. 00:43:43.92\00:43:45.49 Let's just say that things are winding up 00:43:45.52\00:43:46.89 and you just don't want the church 00:43:46.96\00:43:48.39 to keep paying you interest, 00:43:48.42\00:43:49.76 but you'd like to let them take the whole balance." 00:43:49.79\00:43:51.59 That's happened to several of mine already. 00:43:51.63\00:43:54.00 Very interesting point. 00:43:54.03\00:43:56.16 The reason I want to say what I did about the widows 00:43:56.20\00:43:58.40 is that we want them to simplify their lives 00:43:58.43\00:44:00.44 so they don't have to worry about the stock market 00:44:00.47\00:44:02.14 or anything like that. 00:44:02.17\00:44:03.51 They can be involved in helping 00:44:03.54\00:44:05.47 to make sure the cause of God goes forward. 00:44:05.51\00:44:08.24 Now, here's my last little bit of philosophy, 00:44:08.28\00:44:10.88 who of us wants to die with a big bank account? 00:44:10.95\00:44:14.48 Or with lots of assets. 00:44:14.52\00:44:16.15 And I thought to myself, Kathy and I, 00:44:16.18\00:44:17.52 this year gave a huge amount of my most we've ever done 00:44:17.59\00:44:19.85 to a new church project, 00:44:19.89\00:44:21.32 we're going to do more, we're trying to do more, 00:44:21.36\00:44:23.43 we want to make sure that when Jesus comes 00:44:23.46\00:44:24.89 we don't have a lot of money in the bank. 00:44:24.93\00:44:27.20 The goal of the Christian is to die penniless. 00:44:27.23\00:44:30.50 The trick is dismantling, 00:44:30.57\00:44:33.47 so you need to figure out how to do it 00:44:33.54\00:44:34.87 and you do your estate plan and so on 00:44:34.90\00:44:36.24 so the God's cause is remembered 00:44:36.27\00:44:37.61 even if you may not have your wits 00:44:37.64\00:44:38.97 about you at the end, you know. 00:44:39.01\00:44:40.34 And we also minimize the family squabbles. 00:44:40.38\00:44:42.91 Oh, absolutely. 00:44:42.94\00:44:44.28 A lot of times when people die, you know, I said 00:44:44.31\00:44:45.78 "Where there's a will there's a lot of relatives." 00:44:45.81\00:44:47.75 That's right. 00:44:47.78\00:44:50.29 They say, if you do your giving while you're living 00:44:50.32\00:44:52.02 then you knowing where it's going. 00:44:52.05\00:44:53.56 Say that again. Say it. 00:44:53.59\00:44:54.92 If you give your giving while you're living 00:44:54.96\00:44:56.29 then you knowing where it's going. 00:44:56.32\00:44:57.66 Did you hear that? 00:44:57.69\00:44:59.03 If you give while you're living 00:44:59.06\00:45:00.40 then you're knowing where it's going. 00:45:00.43\00:45:01.76 I like that. Had to write that down. 00:45:01.80\00:45:03.13 That should be buttoned you guys. 00:45:03.16\00:45:04.50 They should. 00:45:04.53\00:45:05.87 But, Jeff, talk about the donor with the matched challenge? 00:45:05.90\00:45:07.97 Well, this is such an interesting case. 00:45:08.00\00:45:10.41 Two years ago a lady called the office 00:45:10.44\00:45:13.78 and said she wanted to give a $50,000 matching gift. 00:45:13.81\00:45:17.78 In other words, if we could raise $50 00:45:17.81\00:45:19.95 based on her challenge, she would give us $50. 00:45:20.02\00:45:23.79 And usually we're encouraging people to give, 00:45:23.82\00:45:25.79 this was a case where I said, 00:45:25.82\00:45:27.16 "I want to come and talk to you first." 00:45:27.19\00:45:29.59 And I went to talk to her. 00:45:29.62\00:45:31.46 And she asked us to keep her name anonymous, 00:45:31.49\00:45:34.73 and we're going to do that. 00:45:34.76\00:45:36.50 But she lived in a very humble home. 00:45:36.53\00:45:40.14 Now there are mobile homes and there are trailer houses, 00:45:40.17\00:45:44.01 she lived in a trailer house, that's a difference. 00:45:44.04\00:45:47.41 She had been widowed more than once. 00:45:47.48\00:45:50.25 And I said, "Can you do this?" 00:45:50.28\00:45:52.91 And she said, "Yes, I can do this." 00:45:52.95\00:45:55.08 She said, "I've done it for Quiet Hour, 00:45:55.12\00:45:56.82 I've done it for one of our mission schools." 00:45:56.89\00:45:59.09 But she says "I have just a couple of things. 00:45:59.12\00:46:01.56 Is it okay if I give $25,000 in 2018 00:46:01.59\00:46:06.23 and $25,000 in 2019, 00:46:06.26\00:46:08.30 what would you say? 00:46:08.33\00:46:09.66 What do I say? 00:46:09.70\00:46:11.03 Then she said, "Give me a week or two. 00:46:11.07\00:46:13.34 I've got to put some resources together 00:46:13.37\00:46:15.07 and I will send you a check which she did. 00:46:15.10\00:46:17.01 Wow. 00:46:17.04\00:46:18.37 And I just visited her a few days ago 00:46:18.41\00:46:20.98 to give her a report. 00:46:21.01\00:46:22.84 And the report was that her $50,000 challenge 00:46:22.88\00:46:26.45 grant from a widow's mite you might say, 00:46:26.48\00:46:29.05 she was a retired church schoolteacher, 00:46:29.08\00:46:32.42 twice a widow, 00:46:32.45\00:46:35.86 196 people had given 00:46:35.89\00:46:39.86 a little over $54,000 00:46:39.89\00:46:42.63 to match her $50,000. 00:46:42.66\00:46:45.60 And she had a huge smile on her face. 00:46:45.63\00:46:48.77 You know, like Ed said... Did you say 194 people? 00:46:48.80\00:46:51.51 When you give while you're living, 00:46:51.54\00:46:53.41 you get the joy of giving. 00:46:53.48\00:46:55.51 Yeah. Wow. 00:46:55.54\00:46:56.88 You expect... When we give in our estate plan, 00:46:56.95\00:46:58.61 we were just making sure 00:46:58.65\00:47:00.02 that God gets what He loaned us. 00:47:00.05\00:47:02.72 But when we give while we're living 00:47:02.75\00:47:04.09 we see the souls win, 00:47:04.12\00:47:05.45 we see the quality broadcasts at 3ABN, 00:47:05.49\00:47:09.06 we see new areas being entered, 00:47:09.09\00:47:10.93 we see getting into remote, impossible places. 00:47:10.96\00:47:15.46 We see what Jesus said was the sign 00:47:15.50\00:47:19.50 that His coming was there 00:47:19.53\00:47:21.27 and that is when the gospel goes to every nation, 00:47:21.30\00:47:24.21 kindred, tongue, and people. 00:47:24.24\00:47:26.34 Wow. 00:47:26.37\00:47:27.71 We see the hurricanes, we see the crime, 00:47:27.74\00:47:29.88 we see all of this, 00:47:29.91\00:47:31.48 but the gospel going to every nation, 00:47:31.51\00:47:33.21 kindred, tongue and people is a sign of the end 00:47:33.25\00:47:35.58 and that's what we see today. 00:47:35.62\00:47:36.99 Amen. Yes. 00:47:37.02\00:47:38.35 Beautiful. With your partnership and ours. 00:47:38.39\00:47:39.72 Yes. Okay. 00:47:39.75\00:47:41.09 Yeah. Now, Cami. 00:47:41.12\00:47:42.46 Yes. 00:47:42.49\00:47:43.83 Let's talk about Papua New Guinea? 00:47:43.86\00:47:45.19 Let's. 00:47:45.23\00:47:46.56 You know, the Holy Spirit is moving all over this world 00:47:46.59\00:47:48.63 on people's hearts to give what they can now 00:47:48.66\00:47:51.60 so that we can finish the work together. 00:47:51.63\00:47:53.74 And I believe we can do that in this generation. 00:47:53.77\00:47:56.47 There is this couple named Ellen and Simon 00:47:56.50\00:47:59.44 in Papua New Guinea, 00:47:59.47\00:48:00.81 our team was just there and met with them. 00:48:00.88\00:48:03.08 They were Sunday pastors, both of them, 00:48:03.11\00:48:06.48 with seven children. 00:48:06.51\00:48:09.02 They came across the AWR broadcasts 00:48:09.05\00:48:12.29 and evangelistic series 00:48:12.32\00:48:13.69 and things that are happening there in Papua New Guinea 00:48:13.76\00:48:15.69 and they have fallen in love with the truth in the Bible. 00:48:15.72\00:48:18.39 Fallen in Jesus, fall in love with Jesus 00:48:18.43\00:48:20.70 and want to become Seventh-day Adventists. 00:48:20.73\00:48:23.23 Now they are not baptized yet, 00:48:23.26\00:48:25.50 but they will be 00:48:25.53\00:48:26.87 when we have our big evangelistic series coming up, 00:48:26.94\00:48:29.17 which both of you know very well about. 00:48:29.20\00:48:31.34 We'll talk about that in a minute. 00:48:31.37\00:48:33.48 But this precious family are so on fire for the Lord 00:48:33.51\00:48:38.51 that they have decided sacrificially 00:48:38.55\00:48:41.02 to tear down their home and erect a church building 00:48:41.05\00:48:46.55 so that all the community in their surrounding area 00:48:46.59\00:48:49.69 will come to the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:48:49.72\00:48:52.99 The little hut behind that building 00:48:53.03\00:48:55.03 that you see there, 00:48:55.06\00:48:56.40 all nine of them are living in a little hut right now. 00:48:56.43\00:49:00.14 Talk about giving everything you've got. 00:49:00.17\00:49:03.61 And this church will be used mightily 00:49:03.64\00:49:07.08 and it will be overflowing 00:49:07.11\00:49:09.01 and it will start other churches nearby. 00:49:09.04\00:49:11.68 We just know it.
