Friendship... 00:07:08.49\00:07:09.82 Now break that down, friendship evangelism. 00:07:09.86\00:07:11.99 What is that, just witnessing to somebody else, 00:07:12.03\00:07:15.33 is that befriending somebody else? 00:07:15.36\00:07:17.17 And how does that work? 00:07:17.20\00:07:18.93 It's letting God use you. 00:07:18.97\00:07:20.94 I know when I went to where Joy and I met 00:07:20.97\00:07:23.51 was at a child education class for children 00:07:23.54\00:07:29.01 when they were young. 00:07:29.04\00:07:30.45 And so when I walked in, 00:07:30.48\00:07:32.65 Joy just happened to be smiling and I said hi, 00:07:32.68\00:07:35.52 and the friendship sparked and we lost touch. 00:07:35.55\00:07:39.09 And so through that it was just sharing my faith, 00:07:39.12\00:07:42.22 but also befriending her 00:07:42.26\00:07:43.63 when whatever she needed anything. 00:07:43.66\00:07:45.46 I was just like, 00:07:45.49\00:07:46.83 "Oh, well, okay, I can help you." 00:07:46.90\00:07:48.66 And it just grew from there. 00:07:48.70\00:07:51.17 Nice. Nice. And so... 00:07:51.20\00:07:54.07 Okay, so nine years old vegetarian or vegan. 00:07:54.14\00:07:58.64 And then you guys ended up meeting later on in life, 00:07:58.67\00:08:02.31 friendship evangelism. 00:08:02.34\00:08:04.15 Now you're in the Adventist Church. 00:08:04.18\00:08:06.18 Okay. Yeah. 00:08:06.21\00:08:07.55 And it's so exciting because when I first heard 00:08:07.62\00:08:10.89 about some of the ideas, 00:08:10.92\00:08:12.25 they were so different 00:08:12.29\00:08:13.62 in terms of the Christian convictions. 00:08:13.66\00:08:15.36 I mean, I was a Christian, 00:08:15.39\00:08:16.73 but there were some very different ideas 00:08:16.76\00:08:18.13 in the Adventist Church. 00:08:18.16\00:08:19.49 And I kind of thought 00:08:19.53\00:08:20.90 some of her ideas were a little crazy. 00:08:20.93\00:08:22.26 It took me a lot of time and study with my pastor 00:08:22.30\00:08:25.13 to really understand the truth that we teach. 00:08:25.17\00:08:29.07 But then when I had the idea to go to Africa in 2015, 00:08:29.10\00:08:33.71 she thought I was a little crazy. 00:08:33.78\00:08:35.68 I thought she was very nut. 00:08:35.71\00:08:37.05 I said, "Why do you want to leave your kids 00:08:37.08\00:08:38.45 and go somewhere that's dangerous. 00:08:38.48\00:08:40.32 Stay with your kids." 00:08:40.35\00:08:42.95 So you guys kind of switched? 00:08:42.98\00:08:45.52 We switched roles. 00:08:45.55\00:08:46.89 Got you, got you. 00:08:46.96\00:08:48.29 And so, Dr. Fred, 00:08:48.32\00:08:49.66 tell me a little bit about your background? 00:08:49.69\00:08:53.70 Now, I am originally from Uganda. 00:08:53.73\00:08:56.30 Okay. 00:08:56.33\00:08:57.67 I grew up in Uganda. 00:08:57.70\00:08:59.63 I came to US to study at Loma Linda University. 00:08:59.67\00:09:04.77 Now at that time, I was... 00:09:04.81\00:09:08.51 After I finished, really I went to Loma Linda Foods 00:09:08.54\00:09:11.81 to work there as a nutritionist. 00:09:11.85\00:09:14.72 And then after working there for about five years, I said, 00:09:14.75\00:09:18.42 there should be something which we can do 00:09:18.45\00:09:20.96 because in Uganda, people are malnourished, 00:09:20.99\00:09:23.53 not because they don't have raw materials, 00:09:23.56\00:09:25.96 but because they don't know how to grow the food, 00:09:25.99\00:09:29.86 which are nutritious. 00:09:29.90\00:09:31.87 And I say, "How can I be of an impact 00:09:31.90\00:09:35.10 to our country there." 00:09:35.14\00:09:37.64 And also at that time, 00:09:37.67\00:09:39.01 I realized that Loma Linda Foods 00:09:39.04\00:09:40.58 were producing invitational food products, 00:09:40.61\00:09:45.71 nutritious food products, 00:09:45.75\00:09:48.15 which are out of their plant sources. 00:09:48.18\00:09:49.88 I say well, let me go and study, 00:09:49.92\00:09:51.99 so I went to Colorado State and studied there 00:09:52.02\00:09:56.16 about how to manufacture formulate these food products. 00:09:56.19\00:10:01.13 Wow! 00:10:01.16\00:10:02.50 Now so far I haven't done 00:10:02.53\00:10:05.47 where I could go and implement what I learned, 00:10:05.50\00:10:08.60 but I was volunteering 00:10:08.64\00:10:11.91 at Adventist community center. 00:10:11.94\00:10:16.31 And there was someone 00:10:16.34\00:10:17.71 who had attended one of the conferences here 00:10:17.75\00:10:20.85 and Joy presented. 00:10:20.92\00:10:25.02 And when he came back, he asked me, 00:10:25.05\00:10:27.26 "Do you know FARM STEW?" 00:10:27.29\00:10:28.62 And I said, "What is that?" 00:10:28.66\00:10:30.33 He said, "It's in Uganda." 00:10:30.36\00:10:31.69 And I said, "In Uganda? 00:10:31.73\00:10:33.40 I've never heard of it." 00:10:33.43\00:10:35.33 Then I wanted to contact her, but before I did, 00:10:35.36\00:10:40.87 I realized that we are gonna have her 00:10:40.94\00:10:42.90 on our Uganda-American Adventist Association Committee 00:10:42.94\00:10:48.78 in Chicago, right? 00:10:48.81\00:10:51.68 Right. 00:10:51.71\00:10:53.05 And then that's where she told me about it 00:10:53.08\00:10:56.42 and she asked me whether I would like to join, 00:10:56.45\00:10:59.52 and then I did agree, so here I am. 00:10:59.55\00:11:03.22 Wow. Wow. 00:11:03.26\00:11:04.59 So you caught the vision? 00:11:04.63\00:11:05.99 Amen. Yes. 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.40 Well, and the cool thing is God has planted this vision 00:11:07.43\00:11:10.27 in the hearts of several 00:11:10.30\00:11:11.80 of our board members have the same story 00:11:11.83\00:11:13.84 where they were already doing work 00:11:13.87\00:11:16.14 in this type of field. 00:11:16.17\00:11:17.51 And they were yearning for something more 00:11:17.54\00:11:19.11 where we would really combine the physical 00:11:19.14\00:11:21.78 and the spiritual together. 00:11:21.81\00:11:23.14 And I think that's something unique 00:11:23.18\00:11:24.51 about FARM STEW. 00:11:24.55\00:11:25.88 We're reaching the most basic spiritual needs. 00:11:25.91\00:11:27.85 But... 00:11:27.88\00:11:29.22 I'm sorry, basic physical needs, 00:11:29.25\00:11:30.59 but we're doing in a spiritual Bible infused way. 00:11:30.62\00:11:33.99 So I think that really helped Dr. Fred 00:11:34.06\00:11:36.73 and some of our other board members just capture it. 00:11:36.76\00:11:39.33 Nice. 00:11:39.36\00:11:40.70 So, you know, and talking about FARM STEW, 00:11:40.73\00:11:43.67 what's the mission? 00:11:43.70\00:11:45.57 So our mission is to be 00:11:45.60\00:11:47.64 what we call a recipe for abundant life. 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.87 And so, you know, Jesus in John 10:10, 00:11:49.90\00:11:52.34 He says that He is here that we may have life 00:11:52.37\00:11:55.54 and have it more abundantly. 00:11:55.58\00:11:57.25 But the first part of the verse also is important. 00:11:57.28\00:12:00.55 It's that the thief comes to kill, steal, and destroy. 00:12:00.62\00:12:04.49 And so right there in one verse, John 10:10, 00:12:04.52\00:12:06.49 you have the great controversy. 00:12:06.52\00:12:08.42 So I've gone out to many other Christian organizations. 00:12:08.46\00:12:12.19 I'm teaching them about the great controversy 00:12:12.23\00:12:14.36 through that one verse. 00:12:14.40\00:12:15.73 Wow. 00:12:15.76\00:12:17.10 And what we want to do is 00:12:17.17\00:12:18.50 create an environment 00:12:18.53\00:12:19.87 for even the poorest of people in the world 00:12:19.90\00:12:21.90 to be able to combat hunger, disease, 00:12:21.94\00:12:24.21 and poverty in their community, 00:12:24.24\00:12:26.04 and to equip them so that they can show 00:12:26.07\00:12:28.88 that Jesus desire can be realized 00:12:28.91\00:12:30.98 in the here and now. 00:12:31.01\00:12:32.35 They can have an abundant life. 00:12:32.38\00:12:33.72 And so that's how it's being fulfilled? 00:12:33.75\00:12:35.22 Amen. Yes. 00:12:35.25\00:12:36.99 And you guys have a global impact? 00:12:37.02\00:12:40.76 Yeah, we have. 00:12:40.79\00:12:42.39 We started little, little. 00:12:42.42\00:12:44.03 Okay. 00:12:44.06\00:12:45.39 I was over there on a trip that was funded 00:12:45.43\00:12:46.76 by the United States Agency for International Development 00:12:46.80\00:12:49.56 on just a three-week mission trip. 00:12:49.60\00:12:51.80 It was mission for me. 00:12:51.83\00:12:53.57 I met Adventists there. 00:12:53.64\00:12:54.97 They actually converted me. 00:12:55.00\00:12:56.54 They caused me to finally get in the baptismal waters 00:12:56.57\00:12:59.07 because I wanted to be part of this global family of faith. 00:12:59.11\00:13:01.78 Yes. 00:13:01.81\00:13:03.14 They inspired me. 00:13:03.18\00:13:04.51 And so we started in Uganda. 00:13:04.55\00:13:06.58 God just showed me that the training 00:13:06.61\00:13:08.75 that I was bringing needed to be continued. 00:13:08.78\00:13:11.22 Even when I had to go home 00:13:11.25\00:13:12.59 and like Cherri said had to go back 00:13:12.62\00:13:14.29 and take care of my own children. 00:13:14.32\00:13:16.22 I felt like there's children dying here. 00:13:16.26\00:13:18.33 Yes. 00:13:18.36\00:13:19.69 And there's local people committed, 00:13:19.73\00:13:21.56 Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:13:21.60\00:13:23.37 that can do this just as well 00:13:23.40\00:13:24.87 or better actually than I can 00:13:24.90\00:13:26.30 'cause they can do it in the local language, 00:13:26.33\00:13:28.10 knowing the culture, everything. 00:13:28.14\00:13:30.14 So we hired five people originally. 00:13:30.21\00:13:33.04 Now that has expanded 00:13:33.07\00:13:34.41 to where we have four teams in three countries. 00:13:34.44\00:13:37.58 And we're going to be launching in a fourth country 00:13:37.65\00:13:40.25 later this month in Rwanda in partnership 00:13:40.32\00:13:42.85 with our medical school in Rwanda, 00:13:42.88\00:13:46.59 the world's seventh Adventist medical school. 00:13:46.62\00:13:49.02 Wow! So yes. 00:13:49.06\00:13:50.96 We are very, very excited about what God is doing. 00:13:50.99\00:13:52.83 That's huge. 00:13:52.86\00:13:54.20 So you guys have been growing, and growing, and growing, 00:13:54.23\00:13:56.00 and God's just been blessing the ministry. 00:13:56.03\00:13:58.93 What does FARM STEW stand for? 00:13:58.97\00:14:01.04 So it's an acronym. 00:14:01.07\00:14:02.60 Okay. 00:14:02.64\00:14:04.01 And it's similar to some other health message acronyms 00:14:04.04\00:14:06.68 that our church has helped make famous all over the world 00:14:06.71\00:14:09.74 and has helped people 00:14:09.78\00:14:11.11 all over the world get healthier, 00:14:11.15\00:14:12.91 but our acronym is a little bit different. 00:14:12.95\00:14:15.35 You can see we start with the letter farming. 00:14:15.38\00:14:17.39 Okay. 00:14:17.42\00:14:18.75 Like you said, 00:14:18.79\00:14:20.12 there's beautiful climates in a lot of these places, 00:14:20.16\00:14:21.49 but people don't know how to grow the food. 00:14:21.52\00:14:23.96 So farming, attitude, rest, and meals is FARM. 00:14:24.03\00:14:28.63 STEW is sanitation, temperance, enterprise, and water. 00:14:28.66\00:14:32.53 Nice. 00:14:32.57\00:14:33.94 So these are what we call the eight ingredients 00:14:33.97\00:14:36.04 in the recipe for abundant life. 00:14:36.07\00:14:37.54 That's incredible. 00:14:37.61\00:14:39.27 Now why would you say that temperance is so important? 00:14:39.31\00:14:43.08 So temperance, we know self-control 00:14:43.11\00:14:46.18 is one of the most important characteristics 00:14:46.21\00:14:47.75 to success in life. 00:14:47.78\00:14:49.65 Anywhere globally, we need self-control. 00:14:49.68\00:14:52.92 Our message is a little bit expanded to that 00:14:52.95\00:14:55.52 because we consider not only the substances 00:14:55.56\00:14:58.23 that people abuse, 00:14:58.26\00:15:00.63 but also we talk about sexual temperance. 00:15:00.70\00:15:03.60 If you think of the continent of Africa, 00:15:03.67\00:15:05.67 AIDS is still raging. 00:15:05.70\00:15:07.70 And so we need to really address the biblical sexuality. 00:15:07.74\00:15:11.44 And we do so in a variety of ways 00:15:11.47\00:15:13.68 in the context of these communities 00:15:13.71\00:15:15.98 and also in the context of helping young girls 00:15:16.01\00:15:19.05 who are struggling to stay in school 00:15:19.08\00:15:22.15 because they don't have what they need 00:15:22.18\00:15:23.52 for their menstrual hygiene. 00:15:23.59\00:15:25.12 We help them with sharing a biblical sexuality, hygiene, 00:15:25.15\00:15:29.29 and we also equip them with... 00:15:29.32\00:15:31.29 That's a whole another subject, 00:15:31.33\00:15:32.66 but we equip them with what they need 00:15:32.69\00:15:34.33 to be able to stay in school. 00:15:34.36\00:15:35.86 Wow. Oh, wow! 00:19:22.99\00:19:24.39 And you can see actually, 00:19:24.43\00:19:25.96 Dr. Fred is in that picture in the front row 00:19:25.99\00:19:27.93 with his South Sudan shirt. 00:19:27.96\00:19:29.80 Nice. 00:19:29.83\00:19:31.17 So the yellow are South Sudan trainers, 00:19:31.20\00:19:32.53 green are FARM STEW Uganda trainers. 00:19:32.57\00:19:34.74 Wow! 00:19:34.77\00:19:36.10 And then we also have volunteers 00:19:36.14\00:19:37.51 that we train as well. 00:19:37.54\00:19:38.87 So they're the ones going out 00:19:38.91\00:19:40.24 bringing this message of abundant life. 00:19:40.28\00:19:41.61 Now I love that idea and that concept, 00:19:41.64\00:19:44.15 but what's the philosophy behind that? 00:19:44.18\00:19:47.82 And as opposed to taking Americans over there 00:19:47.85\00:19:51.32 to work and do all that, 00:19:51.35\00:19:53.29 what's the philosophy behind that? 00:19:53.36\00:19:56.42 Really, that's very important because the people in Uganda, 00:19:56.46\00:20:00.20 they know the people in Uganda. 00:20:00.23\00:20:03.77 Someone from outside won't know the culture. 00:20:03.80\00:20:07.04 It will take some time before they can understand. 00:20:07.07\00:20:09.24 Yes. 00:20:09.27\00:20:10.61 Because for example, I'll tell you one thing 00:20:10.64\00:20:13.27 that when you tell some of the people 00:20:13.31\00:20:18.11 in Uganda or Sudan 00:20:18.15\00:20:20.62 that you need a latrine, they say what is that? 00:20:20.65\00:20:23.79 I can't do that. 00:20:23.82\00:20:26.42 Those people in Uganda 00:20:26.45\00:20:27.79 are the only one who can understand the culture, 00:20:27.82\00:20:30.66 why don't they want to go in latrine? 00:20:30.73\00:20:33.06 Can we help them 00:20:33.09\00:20:35.30 so that they can learn 00:20:35.33\00:20:36.67 how to have latrine in their homes 00:20:36.70\00:20:39.53 so that they can dispel all those fears 00:20:39.57\00:20:41.94 which they have? 00:20:41.97\00:20:43.34 Because they have latrine near them. 00:20:43.41\00:20:45.41 And that's what they do. 00:20:45.44\00:20:46.78 They do it outside and cover it, 00:20:46.81\00:20:48.84 which we are teaching them that 00:20:48.88\00:20:50.25 that is spreading disease all over. 00:20:50.28\00:20:52.71 Wow. 00:20:52.75\00:20:54.12 So the nationals who will know, 00:20:54.15\00:20:56.25 they know what kind of food their people like 00:20:56.28\00:20:58.52 because if we bring macaroni, 00:20:58.55\00:21:01.39 they say what is that? 00:21:01.42\00:21:04.89 But they know the corn 00:21:04.93\00:21:07.50 which they call maize over there. 00:21:07.53\00:21:08.86 Maize? 00:21:08.90\00:21:10.27 That's what they like. 00:21:10.30\00:21:11.63 And they know how to prepare it. 00:21:11.67\00:21:13.00 Oh, okay. 00:21:13.03\00:21:14.37 And really, when you look at what they have and try to... 00:21:14.40\00:21:16.91 For example, the food, 00:21:16.94\00:21:18.67 try to make it nutritional 00:21:18.71\00:21:22.41 then you'd be happy. 00:21:22.44\00:21:24.95 And the only way unless someone from outside 00:21:24.98\00:21:27.62 has to take a long time 00:21:27.65\00:21:29.32 learning all those things that they can have, 00:21:29.35\00:21:31.52 but those nationals, they know that. 00:21:31.55\00:21:34.46 So it will take shorter for them to train. 00:21:34.49\00:21:37.89 So they're ahead of the curve in the sense 00:21:37.93\00:21:41.13 that they don't have to learn about the culture, 00:21:41.16\00:21:43.13 they're in the culture. 00:21:43.16\00:21:44.50 Exactly. 00:21:44.53\00:21:45.87 That makes sense. What does training look like? 00:21:45.90\00:21:48.74 So I want to show 00:21:48.77\00:21:50.61 actually the picture of our trainers 00:21:50.64\00:21:51.97 training in South Sudan. 00:21:52.01\00:21:54.34 They are out in the bush. 00:21:54.38\00:21:56.24 They're out, oftentimes just on tarps. 00:21:56.28\00:21:59.25 You can see this whole group of women, 00:21:59.28\00:22:00.95 these are two of our South Sudan trainers. 00:22:00.98\00:22:04.29 They do hands-on cooking classes. 00:22:04.32\00:22:06.19 You can actually switch to the picture 00:22:06.22\00:22:07.56 of the greens as well. 00:22:07.59\00:22:08.92 We teach about eating local greens. 00:22:08.96\00:22:11.99 Like he said, everybody loves their maize, 00:22:12.03\00:22:14.56 which is a great food except for sadly they eat it 00:22:14.60\00:22:17.27 in a very highly refined white just powder, right? 00:22:17.30\00:22:21.57 It's 30% to 50% of the calories of Sub-Saharan Africans 00:22:21.60\00:22:25.81 are coming from this white powdery substance. 00:22:25.84\00:22:28.71 So you can imagine the rates 00:22:28.74\00:22:30.08 of diabetes, cancers, even hemorrhoids. 00:22:30.15\00:22:34.82 People are constipated. 00:22:34.85\00:22:36.18 They have no fiber if that's all they're eating 00:22:36.22\00:22:38.42 is a white substance powder. 00:22:38.45\00:22:40.46 So really diversifying the diet, 00:22:40.49\00:22:42.19 helping them get, like the greens you said, 00:22:42.22\00:22:44.26 also the beans. 00:22:44.33\00:22:45.66 We do a lot with soybeans trying to encourage, 00:22:45.69\00:22:48.70 and people get very excited 00:22:48.73\00:22:50.17 about being able to make soymilk. 00:22:50.20\00:22:52.90 Milk is kind of a universal, wonderful thing 00:22:52.93\00:22:55.34 that people enjoy being able to give to their children 00:22:55.37\00:22:58.07 and drink hot as a tea or beverage. 00:22:58.11\00:23:00.38 They love it. 00:23:00.41\00:23:01.74 We teach them how to make it with something they can grow 00:23:01.78\00:23:04.15 and get almost for free. 00:23:04.18\00:23:06.48 That's incredible, 00:23:06.51\00:23:08.12 because now you're kind of creating your own food source. 00:23:08.15\00:23:11.09 Exactly. That makes sense. 00:23:11.12\00:23:12.45 Yes, and saving a lot of money in the process. 00:23:12.49\00:23:14.96 Exactly. 00:23:14.99\00:23:16.32 Actually, that's a lot of the comments people say is 00:23:16.36\00:23:18.63 they have now not only are they saving money on food, 00:23:18.66\00:23:22.46 they're saving money on medicines 00:23:22.50\00:23:23.87 because their kids are healthier. 00:23:23.90\00:23:25.87 And they also are saving money in a club. 00:23:25.90\00:23:30.14 So our enterprise, the E stands for enterprise, 00:23:30.21\00:23:33.58 and we have what's called savings clubs... 00:23:33.61\00:23:35.78 Okay. 00:23:35.81\00:23:37.15 Where the people are coming together, 00:23:37.18\00:23:38.95 and every week they might be just putting in a quarter 00:23:38.98\00:23:41.95 into the club account. 00:23:41.98\00:23:43.89 But then they have capital 00:23:43.92\00:23:45.52 for when they want to start a business. 00:23:45.55\00:23:47.46 We have one club, where they're putting in... 00:23:47.49\00:23:50.03 Each family is putting in $1.75 a week. 00:23:50.06\00:23:52.56 Wow. 00:23:52.59\00:23:53.93 And we're really excited 00:23:54.00\00:23:55.33 because we're gonna partner with that club 00:23:55.36\00:23:56.80 and hopefully over 50 more this year 00:23:56.87\00:23:59.90 to actually use some of those funds 00:23:59.93\00:24:01.74 to become a water pump insurance plan. 00:24:01.77\00:24:05.41 So we've leveraged some donors 00:24:05.44\00:24:07.08 that are gonna help us bring water 00:24:07.11\00:24:10.15 and we're inviting people to come help us 00:24:10.18\00:24:13.11 to bring water into some of these communities. 00:24:13.15\00:24:15.92 And the community itself will be responsible 00:24:15.95\00:24:18.82 for having an insurance plan and doing the maintenance. 00:24:18.85\00:24:20.99 Nice. 00:24:21.02\00:24:22.36 So that it's sustainable. 00:24:22.39\00:24:23.73 Everything we want to do is sustainable locally. 00:24:23.76\00:24:25.66 Absolutely. 00:24:25.69\00:24:27.03 And, Dr. Fred, maybe you can touch on this. 00:24:27.10\00:24:29.53 I heard, you know, $1.75 a week, 00:24:29.56\00:24:32.93 now to an American citizen that doesn't seem significant. 00:24:32.97\00:24:36.74 That doesn't seem like a lot of money. 00:24:36.81\00:24:40.58 Why is that like so impressive 00:24:40.61\00:24:44.75 that they're saving $1.75 a week? 00:24:44.78\00:24:49.72 That's very impressive 00:24:49.75\00:24:51.09 because if you look at the families 00:24:51.12\00:24:55.42 in the countryside, 00:24:55.46\00:24:58.63 their income a year, I mean, a month, 00:24:58.66\00:25:03.87 let's say 50,000 shillings a month. 00:25:03.90\00:25:09.84 Now what is 50,000 shillings a month? 00:25:09.87\00:25:12.24 Yeah, that's what I'm trying to figure out like, 00:25:12.27\00:25:14.18 I'm not converting that one. 00:25:14.21\00:25:15.54 That is $20 a month. 00:25:15.58\00:25:17.65 $20 a month? 00:25:17.68\00:25:19.38 $20 a month. 00:25:19.41\00:25:20.75 And there are some families 00:25:20.82\00:25:22.15 who can't even have that $20 a month. 00:25:22.18\00:25:24.22 Wow. 00:25:24.29\00:25:25.62 And if you see that they can save $1.75, 00:25:25.65\00:25:30.13 that's a lot of money 00:25:30.16\00:25:33.29 when they have to go to work, 00:25:33.33\00:25:36.20 they have to spend about $2 to go to work. 00:25:36.23\00:25:41.34 Wow. 00:25:41.37\00:25:42.70 And sometimes I wonder 00:25:42.74\00:25:44.11 how they managed to get that all that money, 00:25:44.14\00:25:47.01 finance their transportation 00:25:47.08\00:25:49.84 and all that expenses. 00:25:49.88\00:25:51.48 Because it's unbelievable, 00:25:51.51\00:25:54.02 but this, what she was talking about, 00:25:54.05\00:25:57.02 Joy was talking about is very important 00:25:57.09\00:25:58.79 because they can help them to save. 00:25:58.82\00:26:00.86 And when they bring all that money together, 00:26:00.89\00:26:03.66 they will be able to do a lot of things, 00:26:03.73\00:26:05.46 buy seeds as she said, 00:26:05.49\00:26:07.93 do other things so that they can advance. 00:26:07.96\00:26:10.97 Wow. 00:26:11.00\00:26:12.33 You know, and Cherri, when she went to Africa, 00:26:12.37\00:26:15.30 which in and of itself was a miracle story. 00:26:15.34\00:26:17.81 Yeah, because she thought 00:26:17.84\00:26:19.17 you were crazy for going to Africa. 00:26:19.21\00:26:20.58 Yeah, exactly. 00:26:20.61\00:26:21.94 And I told her I'd never go to Africa. 00:26:21.98\00:26:23.31 Yes, yes. 00:26:23.35\00:26:24.85 And one of the things is she had this impression 00:26:24.88\00:26:27.42 that maybe it's not really that bad over there, 00:26:27.45\00:26:30.09 maybe just all these organizations 00:26:30.12\00:26:31.45 are just showing the worst of the worst. 00:26:31.49\00:26:33.36 And I just want her to share what she learned. 00:26:33.39\00:26:35.49 Yeah, growing up Adventist, 00:26:35.52\00:26:36.86 you know, you grow up with the idea 00:26:36.93\00:26:38.96 you want to help others, 00:26:38.99\00:26:40.40 but I didn't have the passion that Joy had. 00:26:40.43\00:26:42.60 And so you tend to... 00:26:42.63\00:26:44.67 I hate to say it, but you have the opinion. 00:26:44.70\00:26:46.57 They're showing me the worst. 00:26:46.60\00:26:47.97 You know, it really can't be that bad 00:26:48.00\00:26:50.34 over in Africa, but it is. 00:26:50.41\00:26:53.14 When we were in the villages, those homes 00:26:53.17\00:26:55.98 that is what their daily life is. 00:26:56.01\00:26:58.01 That's their normal life. 00:26:58.05\00:27:00.25 Furniture like we think of today 00:27:00.32\00:27:03.42 is not what they have. 00:27:03.49\00:27:04.82 They're excited to have the plastic chairs 00:27:04.85\00:27:06.96 that we put on our patios from Walmart. 00:27:06.99\00:27:10.53 You know, they don't have much 00:27:10.56\00:27:13.19 so for them to get, and be able to save, 00:27:13.23\00:27:16.50 and have vegetables that they can buy small things 00:27:16.53\00:27:19.07 like a uniform for their kids, 00:27:19.10\00:27:21.04 they can't wait for Joy to come back. 00:27:21.07\00:27:23.14 I've seen them on the teams where we walk in 00:27:23.17\00:27:25.61 and they can't wait to show them. 00:27:25.64\00:27:26.98 This is what I was able to get for my kids 00:27:27.01\00:27:29.28 or provide for their needs. 00:27:29.31\00:27:31.51 My kids aren't sick anymore 00:27:31.55\00:27:33.05 because they're eating what they need to eat. 00:27:33.08\00:27:35.42 It really is a huge thing for them. 00:27:35.45\00:27:38.25 And so this would be 00:27:38.29\00:27:40.66 in certain areas of Africa, correct? 00:27:40.69\00:27:42.66 Because I mean, 00:27:42.69\00:27:44.03 you have Cape Town, South Africa, 00:27:44.06\00:27:45.39 you have Egypt, 00:27:45.43\00:27:46.80 you have so many different places 00:27:46.83\00:27:49.46 that are rich in resources, 00:27:49.50\00:27:51.37 but then you have some parts of Africa 00:27:51.40\00:27:53.47 that are just completely devastated. 00:27:53.54\00:27:56.47 Okay. 00:27:56.50\00:27:57.84 That is really true. 00:27:57.87\00:27:59.21 For example, I grew up in the... 00:27:59.24\00:28:01.51 near Kampala. 00:28:01.54\00:28:03.75 And, of course, it's completely different 00:28:03.78\00:28:05.35 from the other parts of Uganda. 00:28:05.38\00:28:07.62 Yeah. 00:28:07.65\00:28:08.98 Now, as matter of fact, I thought, as she was saying, 00:28:09.02\00:28:13.39 what people are showing us are not true 00:28:13.46\00:28:15.99 because I come from Uganda, never seen those things. 00:28:16.02\00:28:20.40 When I had a chance to go up north in Adjumani, 00:28:20.43\00:28:23.97 I realized that is true, 00:28:24.00\00:28:26.77 they got thatched houses. 00:28:26.84\00:28:30.61 That's what we find there. 00:28:30.64\00:28:31.97 When you're living around Kampala 00:28:32.01\00:28:33.51 in the southern part, 00:28:33.58\00:28:34.91 you don't see those things. 00:28:34.94\00:28:36.28 So you think those are, \no, they're just odd people... 00:28:36.31\00:28:38.81 And as a matter of fact, 00:28:38.85\00:28:40.65 when I was going there I say no, 00:28:40.72\00:28:42.15 I think these are for refugees. 00:28:42.18\00:28:44.69 That's what they know. 00:28:44.72\00:28:46.45 I realized that no, those are homes. 00:28:46.49\00:28:48.39 Wow. 00:28:48.42\00:28:49.76 Yeah. 00:28:49.79\00:28:51.13 So that is very true. 00:28:51.16\00:28:53.33 That in Africa you have a lot of areas 00:28:53.40\00:28:56.87 which are well off and other areas are not. 00:28:56.90\00:29:00.97 That are poverty stricken areas. 00:29:01.00\00:29:02.34 Exactly. 00:29:02.37\00:29:03.71 And those are the areas which FARM STEW want to reach. 00:29:03.74\00:29:06.68 And that's where we have some in north and the east, 00:29:06.71\00:29:12.61 and we want to go to the northwest 00:29:12.65\00:29:15.62 because that is the poorest area in Uganda, 00:29:15.65\00:29:21.59 but weren't having money to go there yet. 00:29:21.62\00:29:23.26 Oh, okay. 00:29:23.29\00:29:24.66 Okay. Yeah. 00:29:24.69\00:29:26.03 Shifting gears a little bit. 00:29:26.06\00:29:27.40 You have an online learning platform, correct? 00:29:27.43\00:29:29.80 Right. 00:29:29.83\00:29:31.17 So we tell people 00:29:31.20\00:29:32.53 about sharing the recipe of abundant life 00:29:32.57\00:29:34.80 and we've been encouraging our donors, 00:29:34.84\00:29:37.31 we've been encouraging anybody that learns about FARM STEW. 00:29:37.34\00:29:39.67 If you're interested, share the recipe. 00:29:39.71\00:29:41.61 It's what our trainers are doing on the ground. 00:29:41.64\00:29:43.58 But then we looked at ourselves, 00:29:43.65\00:29:44.98 how are we sharing the recipe? 00:29:45.01\00:29:46.55 So we're really excited and we have actually a manual 00:29:46.58\00:29:50.19 and a flip chart which we will show, 00:29:50.22\00:29:53.56 but we have an e- learning program 00:29:53.59\00:29:55.19 which we do have a picture of. 00:29:55.22\00:29:56.56 Okay. 00:29:56.59\00:29:57.93 And what we decided is 00:29:57.96\00:29:59.29 we want to make this recipe available to anywhere. 00:29:59.33\00:30:02.90 There's even people in the United States 00:30:02.93\00:30:04.50 that really can't afford fruits or vegetables. 00:30:04.53\00:30:07.07 There's people here that don't have water even. 00:30:07.14\00:30:10.01 So we want to really be a blessing 00:30:10.04\00:30:12.21 to anywhere in the world. 00:30:12.24\00:30:13.58 So we made this free e- learning curriculum. 00:30:13.61\00:30:15.84 And it's on our website, 00:30:15.88\00:30:17.25 you just click the recipe and you'll have a drop-down box 00:30:17.28\00:30:20.02 that will say free e- learning curriculum 00:30:20.05\00:30:22.55 where we share the basics of what is FARM STEW, 00:30:22.58\00:30:26.29 and we equip people in the mini course 00:30:26.32\00:30:29.09 with a PowerPoint and a script. 00:30:29.12\00:30:30.63 So people could go and share this message 00:30:30.66\00:30:32.53 in their own churches. 00:30:32.56\00:30:33.93 They could show the video off of YouTube, 00:30:34.00\00:30:36.23 you just type in FARM STEW 00:30:36.26\00:30:38.00 and that PowerPoint anybody can go 00:30:38.03\00:30:40.04 and present this in their churches 00:30:40.07\00:30:41.64 or in their community group. 00:30:41.67\00:30:43.61 And then the FARM STEW basic course 00:30:43.64\00:30:45.94 is really learning the basics of what our FARM STEW trainers 00:30:45.97\00:30:49.68 are training in the field. 00:30:49.71\00:30:51.05 Okay. 00:30:51.08\00:30:52.41 So we want to make this available. 00:30:52.45\00:30:53.82 We actually have it already translated into Spanish, 00:30:53.85\00:30:56.69 and we're working on Swahili 00:30:56.72\00:30:58.85 and our prayer is that God will mobilize resources 00:30:58.89\00:31:01.42 'cause translation and, you know, doing all this, 00:31:01.46\00:31:03.43 that's also not cheap. 00:31:03.46\00:31:06.13 So we're working to try to really reach the languages 00:31:06.16\00:31:09.26 of the people also in this training. 00:31:09.30\00:31:11.00 Wow. Got you, got you. 00:31:11.03\00:31:13.44 So what is your website though? 00:31:13.47\00:31:16.54 Oh, it's www.FarmStew.org. 00:31:16.57\00:31:20.88 Okay. So it's an organization. 00:31:20.91\00:31:22.38 We are a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit. 00:31:22.41\00:31:25.25 And we are also a member of ASI. 00:31:25.28\00:31:27.95 I'm actually the vice president of the Lake Union ASI Board. 00:31:27.98\00:31:32.19 And we love ASI. 00:31:32.22\00:31:33.56 There are so many wonderful Adventist ministries, 00:31:33.59\00:31:35.39 and that's something else we're excited about. 00:31:35.42\00:31:36.93 We've had a number of the ministries 00:31:36.96\00:31:38.56 that have asked us to partner with them. 00:31:38.59\00:31:41.13 So that's some of the things that we're exploring in 2020. 00:31:41.16\00:31:44.17 How do we partner with other ministries, 00:31:44.20\00:31:46.17 train their workers. 00:31:46.20\00:31:47.54 For example, there was an AFM worker 00:31:47.57\00:31:50.71 who told somebody in Senegal about the e-learning course. 00:31:50.74\00:31:53.58 Oh, wow. 00:31:53.61\00:31:54.94 And I get this email from Senegal 00:31:54.98\00:31:56.88 from this woman that just took the course 00:31:56.95\00:31:58.65 and was thrilled with being able 00:31:58.68\00:32:00.55 to implement FARM STEW in Senegal. 00:32:00.62\00:32:02.82 No "official FARM STEW" person 00:32:02.85\00:32:04.69 has ever stepped a toe in Senegal, 00:32:04.72\00:32:06.25 but the message has gotten there. 00:32:06.29\00:32:08.56 And that was a partnership through AFM. 00:32:08.59\00:32:10.96 So there's a lot of possibilities 00:32:10.99\00:32:12.99 we feel that could really equip many ministries 00:32:13.03\00:32:16.36 with this message. 00:32:16.40\00:32:17.97 Absolutely. 00:32:18.00\00:32:19.33 And now I'm gonna throw out a question. 00:32:19.37\00:32:22.60 This can go to either one of you. 00:32:22.64\00:32:25.27 What are some stories of transformation and miracles 00:32:25.31\00:32:28.31 that you can tell me? 00:32:28.34\00:32:29.68 One of the stories, 00:32:29.71\00:32:31.05 that's one of my favorite ones is 00:32:31.08\00:32:32.78 when Joy was first over there, 00:32:32.81\00:32:35.15 we had a team that started working 00:32:35.18\00:32:37.09 and there was a grandmother, 00:32:37.12\00:32:38.92 who was very sick. 00:32:38.95\00:32:41.32 She took FARM STEW's message all of the acronyms to heart 00:32:41.36\00:32:44.76 when she was trained on them. 00:32:44.79\00:32:46.49 Prior to doing them, she could hardly walk. 00:32:46.53\00:32:49.56 They thought she was gonna die. 00:32:49.60\00:32:52.00 And she couldn't wait for Joy to come when she came back 00:32:52.03\00:32:55.37 because she was standing behind Joy 00:32:55.40\00:32:57.01 jumping up and down and said, 00:32:57.04\00:32:59.84 "Now I can play with my grandkids 00:32:59.87\00:33:02.31 because of what your training has done for me." 00:33:02.34\00:33:04.98 Wow. 00:33:05.01\00:33:06.35 And she just wasn't drinking water 00:33:06.38\00:33:08.05 and wasn't eating the nutrition that she needed to feel good. 00:33:08.08\00:33:13.56 And we have actually a video I would love to share it. 00:33:13.59\00:33:16.26 This is from a community 00:33:16.29\00:33:18.26 where there was an Adventist woman 00:33:18.29\00:33:20.70 who saw a FARM STEW trainer with his FARM STEW shirt 00:33:20.73\00:33:24.47 in the market and said, "What is that?" 00:33:24.50\00:33:27.04 And actually, this message has spread 00:33:27.07\00:33:29.87 far and wide in Uganda. 00:33:29.90\00:33:31.24 It's also doing so in South Sudan 00:33:31.27\00:33:33.17 and other places. 00:33:33.21\00:33:34.54 But this lady said, "I think I heard something about it." 00:33:34.58\00:33:37.15 And probably from 3ABN, actually, who knows. 00:33:37.18\00:33:40.32 But she stopped Jonah, one of our trainers 00:33:40.35\00:33:43.52 and Betty who's the leader of that team, 00:33:43.59\00:33:46.12 and she wanted FARM STEW to come. 00:33:46.15\00:33:48.86 They formed a women's group. 00:33:48.89\00:33:50.36 This is in a community, 00:33:50.43\00:33:51.76 where there's a small Adventist Church 00:33:51.79\00:33:53.13 and a huge mosque. 00:33:53.16\00:33:54.50 Wow. 00:33:54.53\00:33:55.86 So they are organizing this women's group 00:33:55.90\00:33:57.87 and Nora in this video is just one of about ten women 00:33:57.90\00:34:01.64 that gave their testimonies. 00:34:01.67\00:34:03.00 I just sat there 00:34:03.04\00:34:04.37 and cried tears of joy listening, 00:34:04.41\00:34:05.77 so I hope your viewers enjoy. 00:34:05.81\00:34:07.18 Yes, let's check it out. 00:34:07.21\00:34:08.54 I reach my thanks to God, 00:34:13.62\00:34:18.42 that who give us life. 00:34:18.45\00:34:20.56 Indeed good, you've enabled, you people, the FARM STEW guys 00:34:31.10\00:34:35.37 who have brought this message to us. 00:34:35.40\00:34:39.11 I found Betty. 00:34:39.14\00:34:41.21 She was the first person 00:34:46.18\00:34:47.85 told me to hear about FARM STEW. 00:34:47.88\00:34:49.95 The word FARM STEW is so wide. 00:34:54.82\00:34:58.19 It is not small. 00:34:58.23\00:34:59.86 When FARM STEW teaches you, 00:35:04.60\00:35:06.10 it helps your family 00:35:06.13\00:35:07.57 even the community and your neighbors. 00:35:07.64\00:35:09.57 Indeed my family there is a very big difference. 00:35:14.21\00:35:17.78 There's a big change in my family. 00:35:17.81\00:35:20.15 Even my husband feels so happy. 00:35:23.39\00:35:25.82 My husband is happy, 00:35:30.13\00:35:32.29 things which he did discover in me seeing in me, 00:35:32.33\00:35:35.96 now he sees something in me. 00:35:36.00\00:35:37.57 FARM STEW taught us how to prepare sauce. 00:35:41.67\00:35:44.54 Even our husbands are being surprised asking, 00:35:49.38\00:35:53.08 "Where do you learn all this?" 00:35:53.11\00:35:55.12 We always tell them FARM STEW, FARM STEW. 00:35:59.15\00:36:02.29 In our homes, the plates talk FARM STEW, 00:36:05.76\00:36:09.16 the house is talking FARM STEW. 00:36:09.20\00:36:11.97 The song is a FARM STEW. 00:36:12.00\00:36:13.54 I have a copy where you can see 00:36:23.75\00:36:27.12 mine is not just talking you just to see it 00:36:27.15\00:36:29.55 when you reach in my home. 00:36:29.58\00:36:31.12 In fact, the Farm STEW lesson, this is not something to hide. 00:36:40.80\00:36:44.50 You reach out to somebody's home, 00:36:44.53\00:36:45.90 you just know that this one 00:36:45.93\00:36:47.44 has ever had lessons of FARM STEW. 00:36:47.47\00:36:49.40 For me getting the money to buy milk was a problem. 00:36:55.61\00:37:00.62 But at my home now, we take milk as we like. 00:37:03.79\00:37:08.72 Even my husband asked me that you people, 00:37:16.67\00:37:20.04 "Where do you get all this money? Okay. 00:39:18.05\00:39:19.39 So this is a hand washing station. 00:39:19.42\00:39:22.32 The World Health Organization 00:39:22.36\00:39:24.13 says that hand washing can make a bigger difference 00:39:24.16\00:39:27.20 than any medical intervention or even any vaccination, 00:39:27.23\00:39:30.67 just simple hand washing. 00:39:30.70\00:39:32.03 So we're bringing water, 00:39:32.07\00:39:33.94 hand washing proper techniques into these villages. 00:39:33.97\00:39:37.21 And simple things like that 00:39:37.24\00:39:39.34 are changing the health of the children. 00:39:39.37\00:39:41.44 Wow! That's incredible. 00:39:41.48\00:39:43.11 So do you see like a lot of malnutrition in those areas 00:39:43.14\00:39:47.95 and how does that affect or impact? 00:39:47.98\00:39:51.55 Sadly, we do. 00:39:51.59\00:39:52.92 I want to show a picture of Unuso 00:39:52.95\00:39:54.99 which is a story that's going on right now. 00:39:55.02\00:39:56.73 I want your donors and listeners to pray for Unuso 00:39:56.76\00:40:00.80 because Betty who was in the video, 00:40:00.83\00:40:03.23 actually, she has a huge heart. 00:40:03.26\00:40:04.60 She's taken in about eight orphans. 00:40:04.63\00:40:06.47 Her grown children help take care 00:40:06.50\00:40:08.07 of these orphans. 00:40:08.10\00:40:09.44 You can see on the left, 00:40:09.47\00:40:11.24 Unuso when he was admitted to the hospital 00:40:11.27\00:40:13.41 and evangelist called Betty 00:40:13.48\00:40:15.01 and said, "What can we do for this little boy?" 00:40:15.04\00:40:17.58 Betty, not only does she go out and train in the villages, 00:40:17.65\00:40:20.12 but she's taking kids into her home. 00:40:20.15\00:40:22.95 And you can see the progression. 00:40:22.98\00:40:24.65 That's just over a month period. 00:40:24.69\00:40:26.79 Wow. 00:40:26.86\00:40:28.19 So this is the FARM STEW recipe. 00:40:28.22\00:40:29.56 It's a highly nutrient dense foods 00:40:29.59\00:40:31.36 that we're feeding people. 00:40:31.39\00:40:32.99 And she has a huge garden behind her house 00:40:33.03\00:40:35.23 that she learned because of FARM STEW training 00:40:35.26\00:40:37.37 and she was writing a letter to me saying, 00:40:37.40\00:40:40.24 "Thank you for equipping." 00:40:40.27\00:40:42.04 And it's not thank me, 00:40:42.07\00:40:43.41 it's thank all of us the collective view all 00:40:43.44\00:40:45.57 throughout the United States, 00:40:45.61\00:40:46.98 and even Canada and other places. 00:40:47.01\00:40:48.34 We've had a donor from Australia 00:40:48.38\00:40:50.65 give to this work and it's a thank you, 00:40:50.68\00:40:53.21 you are saving lives of children 00:40:53.25\00:40:55.12 through this work. 00:40:55.15\00:40:57.12 Yeah, I know it can't be cheap to have a global impact. 00:40:57.19\00:41:01.36 One of the things that I love about FARM STEW is 00:41:01.39\00:41:04.13 that you guys are actually stimulating the economy 00:41:04.16\00:41:07.03 as well over there with the farm-to-table. 00:41:07.10\00:41:09.83 Exactly that. 00:41:09.86\00:41:11.20 And also I want to share a little bit 00:41:11.23\00:41:12.90 about the pads effort 'cause that's another way. 00:41:12.93\00:41:14.94 We always try to buy local, hire local, and be sustainable. 00:41:14.97\00:41:19.21 And Cherri, she has a heart for this. 00:41:19.24\00:41:21.31 When I went over to Uganda 00:41:21.34\00:41:23.14 one of the reasons 00:41:23.18\00:41:24.51 my husband and I got involved in it 00:41:24.55\00:41:26.48 was because of the pads. 00:41:26.51\00:41:28.15 We have two girls and we could not imagine 00:41:28.18\00:41:30.49 as parents them not being able to have pads 00:41:30.52\00:41:33.66 for their menstruation and be able to stay in school. 00:41:33.69\00:41:36.02 A lot of people, young girls 00:41:36.06\00:41:38.96 between the ages of 12 and 15 end up dropping out of school 00:41:38.99\00:41:42.46 when their menstruation starts 00:41:42.50\00:41:44.47 because they have no pads or anything. 00:41:44.50\00:41:46.27 It's shameful for them. Yeah. 00:41:46.30\00:41:48.10 So they end up having to stay at home. 00:41:48.14\00:41:50.51 Well, FARM STEW found AFRIpads, which is a company 00:41:50.54\00:41:54.61 who makes pads reusable pads in Africa, 00:41:54.64\00:41:58.05 and they employ women from Uganda to make these pads. 00:41:58.08\00:42:02.02 So it's enterprise, 00:42:02.05\00:42:03.42 it's keeping the women involved, 00:42:03.49\00:42:05.59 but yet it's also helping the young girls. 00:42:05.62\00:42:08.59 And that is the only thing FARM STEW gives away 00:42:08.62\00:42:11.26 because we feel like the girls jobs 00:42:11.29\00:42:13.23 is to stay in school, 00:42:13.26\00:42:14.60 where the parents job is to learn 00:42:14.63\00:42:16.67 and sell the stuff they get from the garden. 00:42:16.70\00:42:18.53 The girls just to stay in school 00:42:18.57\00:42:20.24 because we want to change the cycle of kids 00:42:20.27\00:42:23.04 dropping out of school. 00:42:23.07\00:42:24.41 Yes. 00:42:24.44\00:42:25.77 And that's this was really important 00:42:25.81\00:42:27.18 to me and my husband, 00:42:27.21\00:42:28.98 and it was just an awesome to see that. 00:42:29.01\00:42:31.01 And the idea that they when you go in 00:42:31.05\00:42:34.32 and see the actual training, 00:42:34.35\00:42:36.12 where we train them how to take care of themselves 00:42:36.15\00:42:38.99 and the pads and stuff, 00:42:39.02\00:42:40.96 the hope when they realize they're going to get these 00:42:40.99\00:42:43.83 to be able to stay in this school. 00:42:43.86\00:42:45.56 I get chills every time I mention it 00:42:45.59\00:42:47.73 because the transformation in the classroom 00:42:47.76\00:42:50.67 is un-describable to you. 00:42:50.70\00:42:52.03 Wow, wow. 00:42:52.07\00:42:53.40 And we have this great picture of here this woman, 00:42:53.44\00:42:55.44 Cherri who said I'll never go to Africa. 00:42:55.47\00:42:57.31 Let's see her in Africa. 00:42:57.34\00:42:59.07 Oh, wow. 00:42:59.11\00:43:00.48 All of these girls were given pads 00:43:00.51\00:43:02.48 during the training at this particular school, 00:43:02.51\00:43:04.65 and this is an Eastern Uganda. 00:43:04.68\00:43:06.61 And Cherri's heart was so big 00:43:06.65\00:43:08.18 that she actually sponsored all the teachers 00:43:08.22\00:43:10.59 getting pads too. 00:43:10.62\00:43:12.32 So she's surrounded 00:43:12.35\00:43:13.69 by a group of very, very grateful teachers 00:43:13.76\00:43:16.36 because this is in a very rural area. 00:43:16.39\00:43:18.46 And not only do we share with the pads, 00:43:18.49\00:43:21.16 but we also have panties, 00:43:21.20\00:43:23.47 and we have drawstring bags 00:43:23.50\00:43:25.80 that we now have an enterprise 00:43:25.83\00:43:28.40 that is deaf Adventist Christian, 00:43:28.44\00:43:31.64 who we started a sewing enterprise 00:43:31.67\00:43:34.41 'cause we were buying panties, 00:43:34.44\00:43:36.75 and we've realized that the girls 00:43:36.78\00:43:38.38 didn't even have panties. 00:43:38.41\00:43:39.75 So our first year we thought 00:43:39.78\00:43:41.15 we're doing good job passing out pads 00:43:41.18\00:43:42.68 and we realized these girls they don't even have shoes 00:43:42.72\00:43:45.29 much less panties to attach a pad to. 00:43:45.32\00:43:47.86 So we've had to kind of grow our scope 00:43:47.89\00:43:50.23 for $15 a girl now. 00:43:50.26\00:43:52.16 They get a pack of four washable cloth pads, 00:43:52.19\00:43:56.00 a few pairs of panties 00:43:56.03\00:43:57.37 and then a drawstring bag 00:43:57.40\00:43:58.73 that's made by this deaf enterprise. 00:43:58.77\00:44:01.20 So we're excited to share about that as well. 00:44:01.24\00:44:03.51 And in our most recent donor newsletter, 00:44:03.54\00:44:06.21 so every quarter we send out a newsletter 00:44:06.24\00:44:09.51 letting people know the impact 00:44:09.54\00:44:10.88 of their investment in FARM STEW. 00:44:10.95\00:44:12.98 So there's a story about this deaf enterprise 00:44:13.01\00:44:15.92 and also about the farming schools 00:44:15.95\00:44:17.85 that were teaching. 00:44:17.89\00:44:19.22 I wanted Fred to maybe share a little bit more 00:44:19.25\00:44:21.39 about the importance of the dietary diversity 00:44:21.42\00:44:24.89 which is our way of saying getting their diet 00:44:24.93\00:44:27.13 to not just be white food, but this colorful rainbow. 00:44:27.20\00:44:31.43 That is true. 00:44:31.47\00:44:32.80 You know, FARM STEW is doing a lot of work in that area. 00:44:32.83\00:44:37.77 They have introduced what the soy milk. 00:44:37.81\00:44:43.45 Here I think some of you, 00:44:43.48\00:44:45.45 some of the people here in the US 00:44:45.48\00:44:46.82 they know soymilk 00:44:46.85\00:44:48.18 and they sell it in the grocery stores, 00:44:48.22\00:44:49.55 but there they have to date on their own. 00:44:49.58\00:44:51.62 And that soymilk has proteins 00:44:51.65\00:44:54.69 and minerals and vitamins and other nutrition. 00:44:54.72\00:44:59.79 Now also another thing which they have done, 00:44:59.83\00:45:02.26 which they do that they teach people 00:45:02.30\00:45:05.53 to eat their colors, 00:45:05.57\00:45:08.74 different colors, vegetables of different colors. 00:45:08.77\00:45:10.74 Okay. 00:45:10.81\00:45:12.14 Because, yeah, that's what 00:45:12.17\00:45:13.78 when I was going to nutrition school, 00:45:13.81\00:45:15.78 they say eat your colors which USDA says, 00:45:15.81\00:45:19.51 but over there also they have told people 00:45:19.55\00:45:22.85 to eat their colors, 00:45:22.88\00:45:24.22 the yellow, green, purple and all that, 00:45:24.29\00:45:27.36 so that they can have proper nutrition. 00:45:27.39\00:45:31.09 Of course, legumes and grains are needed also 00:45:31.13\00:45:35.96 so that they can have complete protein. 00:45:36.00\00:45:38.70 Because people without eating meat 00:45:38.73\00:45:40.97 you have to have complete protein, 00:45:41.00\00:45:42.90 but if you have grains and legumes, 00:45:42.94\00:45:45.17 you have complete protein in your diet. 00:45:45.21\00:45:47.58 Nice. 00:45:47.61\00:45:48.94 And really, I remember watching a documentary 00:45:48.98\00:45:51.18 and saying that basically when you do eat meat, 00:45:51.21\00:45:54.32 you're getting secondary protein 00:45:54.35\00:45:55.98 because the animals are eating the plants 00:45:56.02\00:45:58.02 and then you're eating the animal 00:45:58.05\00:46:00.36 and getting part of that plant protein 00:46:00.39\00:46:02.66 when you could just go directly 00:46:02.69\00:46:04.03 to the plants in the first place. 00:46:04.06\00:46:05.79 Well, it's so exciting 00:46:05.83\00:46:07.20 that our plant-based nutrition message as a church. 00:46:07.23\00:46:11.00 I mean, there is so much science 00:46:11.03\00:46:13.17 backing it up now. 00:46:13.20\00:46:14.87 And even that's the first time I learned 00:46:14.90\00:46:16.81 about Adventist actually 00:46:16.84\00:46:18.34 was from reading the clinical literature 00:46:18.37\00:46:20.58 when I would write my papers, 00:46:20.61\00:46:22.71 back when I had to go make photocopies 00:46:22.74\00:46:25.28 and everything in the library 00:46:25.31\00:46:27.02 and actually go find the actual journal 00:46:27.05\00:46:29.18 ancient times before Google. 00:46:29.22\00:46:30.69 Yeah. 00:46:30.72\00:46:32.05 And the clinical literature even from the 80s 00:46:32.09\00:46:34.76 was already saying that Adventists were healthier. 00:46:34.79\00:46:37.79 And this diet is now proven 00:46:37.83\00:46:40.43 not only to be healthier for people 00:46:40.50\00:46:41.93 but healthier for the planet. 00:46:41.96\00:46:43.87 And so I really do believe this message 00:46:43.90\00:46:45.60 of FARM STEW when you look 00:46:45.63\00:46:47.54 at actually the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, 00:46:47.57\00:46:50.61 there's 17 goals, 00:46:50.64\00:46:52.74 FARM STEW hits on about 11 of them. 00:46:52.77\00:46:55.61 So that's one of our dreams is that, 00:46:55.64\00:46:57.55 you know, we have 8 million Seventh-day Adventists 00:46:57.58\00:47:01.98 in Sub-Saharan Africa alone. 00:47:02.02\00:47:04.42 Wow, 8 million? 00:47:04.45\00:47:05.79 Eight million 00:47:05.82\00:47:07.16 and it's the fastest growing divisions in the world. 00:47:07.19\00:47:08.86 Yes. 00:47:08.89\00:47:10.23 So we really feel like if we can get this message out, 00:47:10.26\00:47:12.76 if we can train our own people to go out with this message, 00:47:12.79\00:47:17.07 which is Christ method alone, 00:47:17.10\00:47:18.67 you know, it's caring 00:47:18.70\00:47:20.04 for the people's basic physical needs, 00:47:20.07\00:47:21.94 winning their confidence, 00:47:21.97\00:47:23.30 what can be more confidence building 00:47:23.34\00:47:24.97 than bringing your kid back from almost death to life? 00:47:25.01\00:47:28.24 Yes. 00:47:28.28\00:47:29.61 You know, it's almost a resurrection story. 00:47:29.64\00:47:31.35 And so we if we can train people, 00:47:31.38\00:47:33.55 and then not just train, 00:47:33.62\00:47:35.72 but we want qualified trainers 00:47:35.75\00:47:38.49 that can actually go out 00:47:38.52\00:47:39.85 and dedicate full time in the ministry. 00:47:39.89\00:47:41.92 And using this message that is the entering wedge, 00:47:41.96\00:47:45.56 it's opening the heart spiritually as well. 00:47:45.59\00:47:48.33 That's huge. 00:47:48.36\00:47:49.70 I think I might, 00:47:49.73\00:47:51.07 I might need to personally look at the chart 00:47:51.10\00:47:52.67 'cause my diet could use a little work to be on. 00:47:52.70\00:47:55.44 So I might have to look at the chart as well. 00:47:55.47\00:47:57.71 Well, go on the e- learning program 00:47:57.74\00:47:59.51 and you can learn a lot and you'll be inspired. 00:47:59.54\00:48:02.38 For sure, for sure. 00:48:02.41\00:48:05.48 No, I was just saying that FARM STEW 00:48:05.51\00:48:08.32 have been accepted by the people in Uganda 00:48:08.35\00:48:11.55 because last year was it 00:48:11.59\00:48:13.69 when we had a memorandum of understanding 00:48:13.76\00:48:16.32 with the Union Bank in Uganda. 00:48:16.36\00:48:19.39 So they see the need to partner with FARM STEW, 00:48:19.43\00:48:23.20 so that they can spread this good news 00:48:23.23\00:48:25.03 of not only spiritual good news, 00:48:25.07\00:48:27.34 but the health good news. 00:48:27.37\00:48:29.90 And actually, I'll say we've also been strongly endorsed 00:48:29.94\00:48:32.81 by Macquarie University, 00:48:32.84\00:48:34.51 which is the lead university in Uganda 00:48:34.54\00:48:37.28 by the head of Rotary Club in Uganda. 00:48:37.35\00:48:40.98 They see what we're doing, the value 00:48:41.02\00:48:43.25 and also the South Sudan attached territory, 00:48:43.28\00:48:45.39 and now this very exciting development 00:48:45.42\00:48:47.36 with the medical school in Rwanda. 00:48:47.39\00:48:49.59 So this is... 00:48:49.62\00:48:50.99 It's a very simple, simple message 00:48:51.03\00:48:52.86 we try to boil it down 00:48:52.89\00:48:54.96 because it's all about prevention. 00:48:55.00\00:48:56.80 And so if we can prevent disease, 00:48:56.87\00:48:58.50 we don't have to get 00:48:58.53\00:48:59.87 into all the technical diagnoses and everything. 00:48:59.90\00:49:01.24 Yes, yes. 00:49:01.27\00:49:02.60 So that's, that's my training is in public health actually, 00:49:02.64\00:49:05.64 I'm master's in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. 00:49:05.67\00:49:08.31 And one of the things they taught us is that 00:49:08.34\00:49:10.45 you want to find a model that works. 00:49:10.48\00:49:13.92 Test it, you know, pilot it, research it, 00:49:13.95\00:49:17.29 make sure you're having an impact, 00:49:17.32\00:49:18.99 and then take it to scale. 00:49:19.02\00:49:20.39 Okay. 00:49:20.46\00:49:21.79 And I can think 00:49:21.82\00:49:23.16 of no better institution in the world 00:49:23.19\00:49:24.66 than the Seventh-day Adventist church 00:49:24.69\00:49:26.23 to be able to take this health message 00:49:26.26\00:49:28.53 to scale to truly, 00:49:28.56\00:49:30.10 truly impact the world for Christ. 00:49:30.17\00:49:31.70 Yes. 00:49:31.73\00:49:33.07 So we have these five freedom priorities 00:49:33.10\00:49:35.07 that we are trying to achieve this year. 00:49:35.10\00:49:37.77 And we want to have the freedom from shame, 00:49:37.81\00:49:40.68 for the pads. 00:49:40.71\00:49:42.04 We want the freedom to grow this program, 00:49:42.08\00:49:43.75 we want the freedom to share the curriculum, 00:49:43.78\00:49:46.21 and we want freedom from disease and drudgery, 00:49:46.25\00:49:48.78 which is bringing fresh and clean water 00:49:48.82\00:49:50.69 into the community. 00:49:50.72\00:49:52.05 So people can check out our website FarmStew.org 00:49:52.09\00:49:54.92 to learn about these freedom priorities, 00:49:54.96\00:49:57.26 and that's where we hope we are going in the future. 00:49:57.33\00:50:00.70 Nice. 00:50:00.73\00:50:02.06 What are some of your needs 00:50:02.10\00:50:03.47 as in ministry and organization? 00:50:03.50\00:50:05.53 Yes. 00:50:05.57\00:50:06.94 So for the most part because we buy local, 00:50:06.97\00:50:08.97 we trade local, we focus local. 00:50:09.00\00:50:11.07 What we need most from North Americans 00:50:11.11\00:50:13.01 is prayer first of all. 00:50:13.04\00:50:14.94 Our trainers are in somewhat violent situations. 00:50:14.98\00:50:19.05 I just learned about one of our communities 00:50:19.08\00:50:22.15 where someone was murdered just last night. 00:50:22.18\00:50:24.62 I woke up to that
