in a Christian home?

parents met at church.

So, Christian church,
raised in a Christian family.

But my god, growing
up was not Jesus Christ,

early on my god was basketball.

My dad is a diehard
Los Angeles Lakers fan.

And so when I was a little kid,

he would watch it
on a 12 inch screen TV,

and that's what I
wanted to be when I grew up,

a basketball player.

But when I was about
five or six years old,

you know, my parents separated
and eventually got a divorce.

And that's where,

kind of that
nice Christian home,

kind of just took a
pause for a little bit.

Immediately after
the separation, divorce,

my sister and I
moved in with my mother.

My mother was trying to raise us

as best as she could.

And she was struggling,

so she moved in
with a family member.

Unbeknownst to her,

this family member was
into drugs and abusing it.

And she had her own room and,

I was getting ready to go to bed

with my mother, and
my sister on one bed.

And I remember my dad
taught us that whenever we,

before we go to
bed, make sure to pray.

And so there I was,
kneeling down to pray.

And I remember
hearing the distinct voice.

It wasn't like an audible voice.

But it was a deep impression.

It just said, "Get out."

And it was a man's
voice. It was deep.

And so I opened up my
eyes and I looked at my mom

and I looked around,
there was no one there.

And I said, "Mom, I think
we need to get out of here."

And she was like,
"What's going on?"

I said, while I was praying I...

She was like,

So, fell asleep.

And I immediately
remember dreaming.

And in this dream,

just a bunch of angels

flying around saying

And I woke up, and I
saw my sister crying,

my mother was crying.

And I could smell the air

was just polluted
and perfumed with drugs,

I could smell it
coming into our room.

And I could hear of my
one of my family members,

yelling and screaming

and talking in different voices.

And I...

This is the first time

I was ever
exposed to any of this.

And so I began to
tremble. I was afraid.

And I looked at my mom
saying, "What do we do?"

And she says, "Go
lock the bedroom door."

So I ran over,
locked the bedroom door.

And by God's grace,

we weren't on a
second story apartment.

We were on the
first floor. Yeah.

And so we opened up the
window, my mom went out,

she, I helped my sister,
my younger sister get out.

And then I came out.

We ran over to a neighbor

that was in the
same apartment complex.

And while we were there,

I could still
hear my family member

screaming and yelling.

And all of a sudden,
I heard this big bang,

he broke the bedroom door
open that we were staying in.

And he said, "Where are
you? I'm going to kill you."

And so, when I was
about five or six years old,

I was introduced to
this kind of lifestyle.

I have been physically
hit because of drug abuse

by different
family members I've seen.

Some, two of my
uncle's go at it and my,

one of my aunt's
tried to stop them

and they ganged up on her.

And so as a
little boy, I was hit,

I saw the effects
of drug abuse all over.

And it really did
a number on my mind.

I felt like I
couldn't trust anyone.

I was always afraid of
what's going to happen next.

I could just give
you stories upon stories

about all the times
we've escaped with our life.

You have trouble
sleeping and all of that after.

Absolutely, I would,
after that experience,

I've always
thought I would see things,

especially at night time.

Things running
at me, hear voices,

it really was a
traumatizing experience

and it kept
developing, and developing.

Finally, my mother,

who was doing
her best to raise us,

finally got her own apartment.

And I remember I
was there with her.

And my mother said,
"Okay, David, it's time to go."

And so, she, you know, I was,

I didn't really
listen really well.

But she gave me a cookie,
and so whenever, you know,

sweet, they do what you want.

I was the first
one out the door.

At that exact moment,
when he was about to grab me,

walks out the front door.

that's really
angry or defensive,

it's one of the
most scariest things

on planet earth.

And that man saw my mother
who's much smaller than him.

He turns around,
starts off running.

And he's very lucky that
my mother didn't catch him.

That did something to me.

I was afraid of my family.

And I oftentimes thought,

It was getting really bad.

Finally I got into high
school and the only thing

that allowed this
nightmare of a life

to kind of seem pleasant,

was when I had a
basketball in my hand.

Every time I played
basketball was like,

as if I entered
a different world.

It was your way of escape.

it to the playoffs.

And here I am a senior.

The coach has our last
huddle at the score, 60 to 60,

And he looks at us,
we're huddled up and he says,

about to change right now."

And so I'm starting to listen.

live about two hours away."

She lived two hours away?

And so I'm like,
"Well, how did you get here?

She said, "Well,
last night, I had a dream.

the head witch, that mentors me,

to go to this church,

two hours away, to
hear God speak to me.

After that dream,

day, she had a vivid,

in her mind, everything.

She drove two hours to
come to this little church,

And she gives her life to God.

He says, "Listen, I
don't need your God,

I am God."

I said, "Excuse me."

He says, "Yes, I am
God. Look at my house."

And granted,
we're in the ghetto.

Yeah. He's like,
look at my house.

Why would I want
anything more than this?

It was just a beat up car.

people in my house.

want. I don't need your God.

about 12 years ago,

naturally during that time,

I would just speak my mind
without thinking sometimes.

enthusiastic about God.

So I didn't
take that really one.

I said, "Well, listen,

when your money runs out,

and you lose your fancy house,

and all your fancy cars,

leave you as a result."

And mind you,
this is the ghetto.

This is a drug dealer.

I said, I just
want to let you know,

that there's a
church around the corner

you just as you are.

That brother got very
angry, as you can imagine,

and so he was coming at me.

and I ran out to the next house.

I said, "We'll
pray for you, Brother."

So I'm running to the next house

spreading the gospel.

that man, it's prayer

there's a little breezeway,

At the end of the

and guess who it is?

He looks at me
and he points at me

Now, immediately,

I remember who this guy is,

brother, I don't do drugs,

I don't do that stuff like...

Then he, his fingers
still extended to me.

And I'm thinking,
is there anyone here,

is there anyone
who can hear this.

And he starts
walking towards me, says,

"You have what I want."

And tears started streaming
down his face and he says,

"You have Jesus.

I see it, and I need it."

over to the Lord Jesus.

telling this drug dealer,

and God still used
my, my little experience,

my lack of
knowledge of understanding

of how to reach people,
used it to reach someone.

And God could do
the same for everybody.

the early afternoon.

someone in the hospital saying,

"There's a patient here

that really wants
to speak to a pastor.

Can you come?"

I said, "Absolutely."

So I got my
things ready, went over,

not knowing who
I was going to see.

Walk into the IC unit.

The nurse
directs me to his room,

walk into this man's room

and he has teardrop
tattoos coming down his face.

So immediately,

if you
understand what that means.

Yes. He's killed people.

Yeah. That's what it symbolizes.

And he said, he
looked at me says,

"Are you a pastor?"

I said, "Yes, sir."

And he says, "Do
you have time for me?"

I said,
"Absolutely. My time is yours."

He's like, "I need to
tell you about my life."

I said, "My time is yours."

So for the next two hours,

this man begins to open
up his whole life to me.

He says, I'm the leader

of the Mexican
Mafia in Los Angeles.

And as he begins
to share the stories,

I know for a fact,
this brother's not lying.

He begins to
share the people that,

what he's done,

how at the age of 12
his father was the leader,

out, by the age of 12

his dad kicked
him out of the house,

gave him a gun,

says you have to
fend for yourself.

If you want to be the leader,

you gotta learn
this for on your own,

so kicked him out of the home.

By the age of 12,
he was killing people,

stealing, doing all this stuff.

He is now, I'm looking at
him at this time, 38 years old.

He's been shot
over 14 different times,

pronounced dead
four different times

and the longest he was in a coma

was for six months.

And he's looking at me.

And he's a quadriplegic,

cannot move from the neck down

because of obviously
all the shots he's taken.

And after sharing me
over two hours' worth of,

just a horror of a life.

He looks at me and he says,

can God forgive me?"

And immediately, I
knew why I was there?

I said, "My Brother,
have you heard of Jesus?

Have you heard about
what He's done for you?"

And he said, "I
don't know Jesus,

I've never heard of that name.

Who is He? Where
can I read about Him?"

I said, "It's in the Bible.
Have you ever read the Bible?"

He says, "I don't
know how to read."

So here's this 38 years old man.

Doesn't know how to read.

Never heard of Jesus Christ,
never met Him, doesn't...

And he says, I
don't know who He is.

I said, "Do you mind
if I spend five minutes

talking to you about who He is?"

In fact, there's
a story in the Bible

that kind of
relates with your story,

and began to open up to Luke,

where the thief
on the cross is out.

I said, "This man lived
a similar life like you.

But he met the Prince of Peace,

the King of kings,
the Lord of lords."

And that day, he
experienced a peace

that he never
experienced in his life.

He experienced this peace
that passes understanding.

And all of a sudden,
as I'm sharing with him

about what Jesus did for him,

how he turned to Christ

He begins to cry.

down his face and he says,

gangsters don't cry.

And because he can't move,

so I begin to wipe
the tears off of His face.

And then I said, "My Brother,

that thief died knowing

assurance of salvation."

over to the same hospital,

to see the changed man.

And I tell him the testimony,

of accepting Christ

impacted you yesterday,

but it's making a difference,
