So originally God called
us to Cambodia through ADRA.

I went there as
a project manager.

And my project was
to help rice farmers

improve their rice yields.

reason for going.

But when I got there,

had a different plan,

the only Christian in the town.

was more than just
helping people grow rice,

them to know Christ.

work full time for Him,

and to move my family
out into the countryside,

to plant a church where we move,

to start a
layman's training program

to train new Adventists
to be church planters.

To use all of our
life savings about $20,000

to get that ministry started...

There was one more thing,

He asked us to live
like the local people lived

Now, I guess the next natural
question for me to ask you is,

We had two small
boys by this time.

So to take them
out in the countryside,

the countryside
was still not safe.

The Khmer Rouge
weren't completely gone.

So it wasn't really safe,

and yet to have no
financial security.

Just to take a family out
and take your life savings

and use it to make this happen.

We weren't trained to do

what we were being
asked to do by God.

So she really wasn't sure.

But God reached her
heart, gave her a sign.

We've been doing it

How did your ministry look
when it first began in 1996?

Well, it was just the two of us,

and our two boys,

in a little thatched
house on 42 acre piece of land.

About three miles
out of Siem Reap town,

and we called one
other Cambodian family

that had come to know Christ

ministry in the town,

to join us and help us.

And so it was just this
little tiny family ministry.

And so what took place
after you started that,

how did it grow?

Well, God, in His graciousness,

that was going to happen.

But we began by establishing
the training program.

We started the ministry in 1996.

We didn't get the training
program going until 1998.

And by this time
we build buildings,

we fenced the compound,
build a road into the property.

So, in 1998, we began
our first training program.

We just ran four months
live in training program.

So where did the rest come from?

Well, God had
given us the promise

provide all our needs.

So, we begin resting...

standing on that promise.

In 1996, today, we're
still standing on that promise,

and God has never failed.

So as we needed
funds, funds would come.

And God was leading
us into a faith journey

which meant we were
learning to trust Him.

So it wasn't very long before...

The vision for what we
were there for begin to grow,

and people started
coming to my wife asking her,

could she help
them with medical needs,

and she had some
basic medical training.

So she began doing
what she could to help them.

And that grew into a clinic

and the bush
hospital type thing.

And over the next four years,

she treated 6000 people
for all different sicknesses.

She's self
trained to be a midwife,

delivered over 60 babies.

But that, then began to
open up new opportunities.

One of the things
that the local village

leader had asked us
was to start a school.

we started the
school as a literacy school

for the poorest of
the poor in our community.

One of our local converts,

we employed her
as our first teacher,

she had grade two
education herself,

and so she was
teaching 20 kids on a veranda,

how to read the Khmer language.

And she had a
second grade education?

So how did that work?

because she knew the
difficulty of language.

really a blessing in Cambodia.

Mission is very cooperative.

When I first had the vision

for the ministry that
we do and the lay training,

I went to the Cambodia
Adventist Mission president,

and told him what
God had put on my heart,

and he embraced the idea.

And then as we looked at

as our ministry started to grow,

we were training people,

pastors were selecting
who would come to train.

And then the
mission was taking them

and sending them out
to be church planters.

So we had this very
close working relationship.

Later with the school,

you know, He's called you

then you've got an orphanage.

And I mean, there's
just so many things that

and so many different ways
that He's grown the ministry.

providing and on time.

live out there, it's very poor.
