Yes. 00:03:15.46\00:03:16.83 Yes. Good to have you here. 00:03:16.86\00:03:18.19 Eric Whipps, kind of let our audience know who you are? 00:03:18.23\00:03:20.73 Yes. 00:03:20.80\00:03:22.16 I work for my family business back home in Palau, 00:03:22.20\00:03:24.53 and I'm also the treasurer 00:03:24.57\00:03:27.04 of the Palau Adventist Wellness Center. 00:03:27.07\00:03:28.44 Okay. 00:03:28.47\00:03:29.80 And before I go to these two highly qualified doctors, 00:03:29.84\00:03:34.01 ophthalmologist, and dentist, tell us about Palau 00:03:34.08\00:03:36.75 because the program focuses on 00:03:36.78\00:03:39.18 the Palau Adventist Wellness Center 00:03:39.21\00:03:41.92 in the island or the country of Palau. 00:03:41.95\00:03:44.72 Tell us about Palau, before we go any further? 00:03:44.75\00:03:46.62 Well, it's, we're 25 years, 00:03:46.65\00:03:48.49 we've been independent from United States 00:03:48.52\00:03:50.03 'cause we used to be on the United States 00:03:50.06\00:03:51.39 and we're a tiny island to the east of the Philippines 00:03:51.43\00:03:55.00 with a population of about 20,000 people. 00:03:55.03\00:03:57.73 And we have about 400 islands which six are inhabited. 00:03:57.77\00:04:01.37 Wow. Wow. 00:04:01.40\00:04:02.74 And you have... 00:04:02.77\00:04:04.11 We were talking about this before the program, 00:04:04.14\00:04:05.47 you have the political structure. 00:04:05.51\00:04:07.68 If I could use the word, that phrase loosely. 00:04:07.71\00:04:10.28 Tell us what makes it different 'cause I'm, 00:04:10.35\00:04:12.35 you know, I was born and raised in New York City. 00:04:12.38\00:04:14.12 We have mayor and then we have governor 00:04:14.15\00:04:16.32 and in America, they have President. 00:04:16.35\00:04:17.95 Talk about that hierarchical structure there in Palau? 00:04:17.99\00:04:20.66 Well, Palau has copied the United States. 00:04:20.69\00:04:22.36 We have the same, we have the President, 00:04:22.39\00:04:24.03 we have a Congress. 00:04:24.06\00:04:25.39 But besides that, 00:04:25.43\00:04:26.76 we have the traditional or cultural chiefs. 00:04:26.80\00:04:29.03 So each state has a chief and there are 16 states. 00:04:29.06\00:04:32.00 Okay. Yeah. 00:04:32.03\00:04:33.44 There are 16 high chiefs, 00:04:33.47\00:04:34.80 and then there are chiefs under them. 00:04:34.84\00:04:36.17 So we still have the traditional system. 00:04:36.20\00:04:37.84 Okay. And the chiefs... 00:04:37.87\00:04:39.57 Tell us a little bit about that. 00:04:39.61\00:04:41.21 When you say chief, they are like the leader 00:04:41.24\00:04:43.88 in that community or in that village, 00:04:43.95\00:04:46.01 if I'm using the right terminology. 00:04:46.05\00:04:48.28 Yeah, within each state, there are clans 00:04:48.32\00:04:51.02 and the chiefs are the head of the clans. 00:04:51.05\00:04:52.85 Okay. 00:04:52.89\00:04:54.26 And then there's rankings of the clans. 00:04:54.29\00:04:56.73 So the high chief is the highest ranking member 00:04:56.76\00:04:58.99 of the clan but also of the state. 00:04:59.03\00:05:02.53 Okay. Of the clans in that state. 00:05:02.56\00:05:04.40 So if I moved to Palau 00:05:04.43\00:05:05.77 and I moved into one of those communities 00:05:05.80\00:05:07.24 to get anything done, I say, 00:05:07.27\00:05:09.14 I think they know who the high chief 00:05:09.17\00:05:10.51 and who the leaders in this community are? 00:05:10.54\00:05:12.54 Yes, it will be good to know the high chiefs, 00:05:12.57\00:05:14.18 but also Palau's a matrilineal society. 00:05:14.21\00:05:17.38 So it's nice to also know the women 00:05:17.45\00:05:19.65 'cause the chief has a counterpart. 00:05:19.68\00:05:21.05 And the counterpart chooses who becomes chief. 00:05:21.08\00:05:25.85 Wow! 00:05:25.89\00:05:27.26 So am I hearing you say the women 00:05:27.29\00:05:29.39 choose who becomes chief? 00:05:29.42\00:05:30.76 Yes. Okay, well, that's cool. 00:05:30.83\00:05:32.16 And you can only become a chief through your mother. 00:05:32.19\00:05:35.43 Okay, so there is lineage connected to that? 00:05:35.46\00:05:37.17 Yes. 00:05:37.20\00:05:38.53 So I can't just come from Brooklyn 00:05:38.57\00:05:39.90 and become a chief in Palau. 00:05:39.93\00:05:41.27 That's correct. Okay. 00:05:41.30\00:05:42.64 So I'm gonna just scratch that occupational idea. 00:05:42.67\00:05:46.88 Good to have you here today. Thank you. 00:05:46.91\00:05:48.24 And we got to work out. 00:05:48.28\00:05:50.05 I'll be glad to come to Palau and not be a chief. 00:05:50.08\00:05:52.91 And I understand it's a beautiful island 00:05:52.95\00:05:54.78 in the Pacific. 00:05:54.82\00:05:56.15 You have a lot of good diving there and scuba and all that? 00:05:56.18\00:05:59.12 Yes, get your certificate before you come. 00:05:59.15\00:06:00.89 I will do that for sure. I don't wanna go out there. 00:06:00.96\00:06:03.09 Even though the water is clear, I wanna know that 00:06:03.12\00:06:04.93 what I'm doing when I go in there. 00:06:04.96\00:06:06.36 And don't be afraid of sharks. 00:06:06.39\00:06:08.83 Okay, well then I need to rethink that. 00:06:08.86\00:06:12.03 Now the people are friendly, and the sharks are friendly. 00:06:12.07\00:06:14.80 Even friendlier. Friendlier. 00:06:14.84\00:06:16.37 The sharks are friendlier, they like to get close. 00:06:16.40\00:06:18.97 Well, Dr. Steve, tell us about your connection with Palau 00:06:19.01\00:06:22.81 and how this wellness center all came about 00:06:22.84\00:06:26.01 since you are the President of the Palau 00:06:26.05\00:06:28.38 Adventist Wellness Center? 00:06:28.42\00:06:31.22 I was interested in serving overseas 00:06:31.25\00:06:34.16 and helping the people of the islands 00:06:34.19\00:06:35.89 because they don't have access to care. 00:06:35.92\00:06:37.73 And I also was interested in encouraging my classmates 00:06:37.76\00:06:40.30 and other dentists to do that too. 00:06:40.33\00:06:42.43 So we plan to go to another small island called Ebeye. 00:06:42.46\00:06:45.50 But things didn't work out. 00:06:45.53\00:06:47.07 So I ended up talking 00:06:47.14\00:06:48.47 with the President of Guam Micronesia, 00:06:48.50\00:06:51.14 and that was Pastor Louis Torres. 00:06:51.17\00:06:52.64 And I asked him... Yes. 00:06:52.67\00:06:54.48 "Is there a place you want us to go?" 00:06:54.51\00:06:55.94 And he asked me, "Where would you like to go?" 00:06:55.98\00:06:58.61 In my mind, the first thing was Palau 00:06:58.65\00:07:00.05 because I've been there many times. 00:07:00.12\00:07:01.45 Okay. 00:07:01.48\00:07:02.82 And I love Palau, but I want to go... 00:07:02.85\00:07:04.19 Now tell us why you've been there many times? 00:07:04.22\00:07:05.65 Because I was going to other islands around it 00:07:05.69\00:07:07.79 and doing the mission trips around there. 00:07:07.82\00:07:09.16 Okay. 00:07:09.19\00:07:10.53 And so I knew that was like the best spot for, 00:07:10.56\00:07:12.19 you know, the nature and the people 00:07:12.23\00:07:13.70 are so kind and the beauty of it all, 00:07:13.73\00:07:16.33 I mean, it's like paradise on earth. 00:07:16.36\00:07:17.87 And you were also involved in cruising at one time? 00:07:17.90\00:07:20.04 Yes, I was a director 00:07:20.07\00:07:21.40 of the Holland America Cruise line 00:07:21.44\00:07:22.77 as a dentist. 00:07:22.80\00:07:24.14 Okay. 00:07:24.21\00:07:25.54 So that at least gave you access to places that... 00:07:25.57\00:07:26.91 All over the world. All over the world. 00:07:26.94\00:07:28.28 All seven continents. 00:07:28.31\00:07:29.64 Wow, I love that. I love cruising. 00:07:29.68\00:07:31.25 Okay, and get back to so... 00:07:31.28\00:07:33.15 So I want to go where God want us to go. 00:07:33.18\00:07:36.52 So I told him you choose. 00:07:36.55\00:07:38.62 So a few weeks later, he said, "We want you to go to Palau." 00:07:38.65\00:07:41.52 And I was just, 00:07:41.56\00:07:42.89 that's how we ended up going there 00:07:42.92\00:07:44.26 and subsequently kept coming back 00:07:44.33\00:07:45.96 with more mission trips. 00:07:45.99\00:07:47.40 In one of the mission trips 00:07:47.43\00:07:49.23 Thai Chief Ibidu approached me at church. 00:07:49.26\00:07:52.20 And he said, "Steve, I need to talk to you." 00:07:52.23\00:07:55.17 And he never said that before. 00:07:55.20\00:07:56.54 So I thought it was something important. 00:07:56.57\00:07:57.91 And he sat me down and goes, "I want to give you my house." 00:07:57.94\00:08:01.01 And I thought, "Oh." 00:08:01.04\00:08:02.41 I'm not too sure about these houses 00:08:02.44\00:08:03.78 are kind of small usually. 00:08:03.85\00:08:05.18 Okay. 00:08:05.21\00:08:06.55 And so I was hesitant, but he's like, 00:08:06.58\00:08:07.92 "I want to help my people." 00:08:07.95\00:08:09.28 So after church, we went and looked at it. 00:08:09.32\00:08:10.92 And I was quite shocked how beautiful and large it was. 00:08:10.99\00:08:13.86 Matter of fact, we have a picture of that house. 00:08:13.89\00:08:15.32 I wanna show the viewing audience right now. 00:08:15.36\00:08:18.19 That's not a little house. 00:08:18.23\00:08:19.56 No, no, it's about probably close to 4000 square feet. 00:08:19.59\00:08:22.00 Wow. 00:08:22.03\00:08:23.37 And that's what he wanted to gift you. 00:08:23.40\00:08:24.73 Yes. 00:08:24.77\00:08:26.10 Wow, and then. 00:08:26.13\00:08:27.47 So he split the property in half 00:08:27.54\00:08:28.87 and gave me that house to help the people there. 00:08:28.90\00:08:30.44 Okay. Yeah. 00:08:30.51\00:08:31.84 And we have a picture of also the chief. 00:08:31.87\00:08:33.24 I want you to kind of see that 00:08:33.27\00:08:34.81 him standing in front of that house there, 00:08:34.84\00:08:36.75 that's him in the center. 00:08:36.78\00:08:38.21 What was his name again? Ibidu. 00:08:38.25\00:08:40.12 Ibidu, I won't even ask you what that means. 00:08:40.15\00:08:41.88 But I know there's some meaning to it because... 00:08:41.92\00:08:43.89 Unique means chief. 00:08:43.92\00:08:45.25 Just means chief. Okay. 00:08:45.29\00:08:47.16 And he approached you, 00:08:47.19\00:08:48.89 and you know what amazing thing about 00:08:48.92\00:08:50.26 that in your heart you wanted to go to Palau. 00:08:50.33\00:08:52.66 You didn't tell that to Pastor Louis Torres, 00:08:52.69\00:08:55.40 but that was in the back of your mind. 00:08:55.43\00:08:57.07 And you remind me of that scripture 00:08:57.10\00:08:58.43 "Commit your way to the Lord, 00:08:58.47\00:09:00.04 and He will give you the desires of your heart." 00:09:00.07\00:09:01.40 Absolutely. Amen. 00:09:01.44\00:09:02.77 And so, so now you get this building. 00:09:02.80\00:09:05.34 And all of a sudden now you're wondering, okay, 00:09:05.37\00:09:07.08 what do I do next? 00:09:07.11\00:09:08.44 Well, thank God, His hand was in all phases of it 00:09:08.48\00:09:12.21 from the people who were involved 00:09:12.25\00:09:14.42 from the Serengal family 00:09:14.45\00:09:15.78 and the donations from the church 00:09:15.82\00:09:17.19 and from stateside, we all donated, 00:09:17.22\00:09:19.32 and even the shipping. 00:09:19.35\00:09:21.12 And all came together, and we were able to remodel 00:09:21.16\00:09:23.63 and put four dental chairs in there and put a OR 00:09:23.66\00:09:26.83 for the medical side with exam rooms 00:09:26.90\00:09:29.16 and lecture room and six apartments. 00:09:29.20\00:09:31.83 Wow! 00:09:31.87\00:09:33.20 So I wanna bring Dr. Ing in here 00:09:33.23\00:09:35.37 because he's a dentist but you're an ophthalmologist. 00:09:35.40\00:09:38.84 That's correct. What makes that... 00:09:38.87\00:09:40.48 Tell us what... 00:09:40.51\00:09:41.84 Somebody may say what is an ophthalmologist? 00:09:41.88\00:09:43.75 An ophthalmologist is an eye care professional, 00:09:43.78\00:09:46.92 medical doctor, 00:09:46.95\00:09:48.32 and we do comprehensive eye care 00:09:48.35\00:09:51.55 and we do surgery. 00:09:51.59\00:09:52.92 Okay. That's part of it. 00:09:52.95\00:09:54.42 How did you get connected into this mission? 00:09:54.46\00:09:57.03 You know, I have to say that it's through my friendship 00:09:57.06\00:09:59.29 with Steve. 00:09:59.33\00:10:00.70 Okay. 00:10:00.73\00:10:02.06 I love doing eye mission trips, 00:10:02.10\00:10:03.77 there's nothing more satisfying to me 00:10:03.80\00:10:05.60 than to be able to help the blind see. 00:10:05.63\00:10:09.04 And, of course, when we do our mission trips 00:10:09.07\00:10:10.61 you want them to not just see physically, 00:10:10.64\00:10:13.11 we want them to see Jesus. 00:10:13.14\00:10:14.48 Okay. 00:10:14.51\00:10:15.84 And so we want to do not just eye mission trips, 00:10:15.88\00:10:20.22 but eye medical missionary trips. 00:10:20.25\00:10:23.72 And... The difference? 00:10:23.79\00:10:25.72 Well, you know, there's humanitarian work. 00:10:25.75\00:10:27.36 That's right. 00:10:27.39\00:10:28.72 And there's mission works 00:10:28.76\00:10:30.09 where we can pray with our patients. 00:10:30.13\00:10:31.46 Yes. 00:10:31.49\00:10:32.83 Give them literature when we're done. 00:10:32.86\00:10:34.20 And point them to Jesus as the one who healed them. 00:10:34.23\00:10:35.96 Okay. So... 00:10:36.00\00:10:37.37 Because the Bible, you know, 00:10:37.40\00:10:38.73 there's a parody in the Bible where the Bible, the Lord says, 00:10:38.77\00:10:42.20 you know, if you could see, 00:10:42.24\00:10:44.01 then I could do something for you. 00:10:44.04\00:10:46.07 But since you say, you see, your sins remain, 00:10:46.11\00:10:49.81 they didn't have that vision that the Lord wants. 00:10:49.84\00:10:51.91 So you're not talking about just the physical side, 00:10:51.95\00:10:54.68 you're talking about you want to help people 00:10:54.72\00:10:56.05 in the spiritual side also. 00:10:56.08\00:10:57.42 Amen. Amen. 00:10:57.49\00:10:58.82 And typically, we like to bring an evangelist with us 00:10:58.85\00:11:01.42 and do these mission trips that way. 00:11:01.46\00:11:03.53 Well, the unique situation with Palau is Steve told me is, 00:11:03.56\00:11:07.60 "Hey, Jeff, the chief is going to give us this property, 00:11:07.63\00:11:12.27 lease it to us in a long term basis." 00:11:12.30\00:11:13.87 Right. 00:11:13.94\00:11:15.27 And the thing that was so appealing to me was, 00:11:15.30\00:11:17.94 I could go back over and over again to the same place 00:11:17.97\00:11:21.81 and there would be continuity, 00:11:21.84\00:11:24.08 follow-up, relationships developing. 00:11:24.15\00:11:27.62 And that was the beauty of this unique situation. 00:11:27.65\00:11:31.49 'Cause usually when we go on an eye mission trip, 00:11:31.52\00:11:33.66 you go there, you help people, 00:11:33.69\00:11:35.22 you make sure that things went well, 00:11:35.26\00:11:37.33 and that there's before you leave, 00:11:37.36\00:11:39.53 there are no problems. 00:11:39.56\00:11:40.93 But you may never go back again. 00:11:40.96\00:11:43.00 Here was a unique situation. 00:11:43.03\00:11:45.00 So you were able to go back on more than one occasion. 00:11:45.03\00:11:47.64 That's right. Good, good. 00:11:47.67\00:11:49.27 And, Eric, you talked about, there's aboard that this... 00:11:49.30\00:11:53.58 We're gonna look at some more pictures 00:11:53.61\00:11:54.98 in just a moment here. 00:11:55.01\00:11:56.34 But tell us your function. 00:11:56.38\00:11:57.71 You're not just a Palauan, 00:11:57.75\00:11:59.38 but your functioning in this mission also? 00:11:59.41\00:12:02.58 Yes. Dr. Chang... 00:12:02.62\00:12:04.59 I met Dr. Chang in 2012. Okay. 00:12:04.62\00:12:07.29 And he was doing some mission trips 00:12:07.36\00:12:09.36 with some teams that he came down with. 00:12:09.39\00:12:11.39 And I think maybe the next year he brought up the idea 00:12:11.43\00:12:13.80 after he met with Ibidu and he asked me 00:12:13.83\00:12:16.16 if I wanted to join this group to found the clinic. 00:12:16.20\00:12:20.64 And you can see the need in Palau for the specialties 00:12:20.67\00:12:23.61 that we would offer. 00:12:23.64\00:12:25.01 And I agreed to join and I became the treasurer 00:12:25.04\00:12:27.38 of the Palau Adventist Wellness Center. 00:12:27.41\00:12:29.11 Okay. 00:12:29.14\00:12:30.48 And now getting this equipment over there 00:12:30.55\00:12:32.71 because we talked about that. 00:12:32.75\00:12:34.12 I wanna show a couple more pictures 00:12:34.15\00:12:35.75 of just like that, 00:12:35.78\00:12:37.29 the foyer and some of the other aesthetics 00:12:37.32\00:12:40.06 of what the center looks like from the inside. 00:12:40.09\00:12:42.26 And we'll explain. 00:12:42.29\00:12:43.63 This is the entryway? 00:12:43.66\00:12:44.99 Okay. 00:12:45.03\00:12:46.36 And...? Reception. 00:12:46.39\00:12:47.73 Reception area. 00:12:47.76\00:12:49.10 What's the size of the facility there? 00:12:49.13\00:12:51.10 Okay, that's another. 00:12:51.13\00:12:52.73 I think the footprint is about probably 60 by 40 00:12:52.77\00:12:55.50 on the downstairs. 00:12:55.54\00:12:56.91 Okay. 00:12:56.94\00:12:58.27 And that's a lecture room there. 00:12:58.31\00:12:59.64 Okay. 00:12:59.67\00:13:01.01 Looking out over, you can see the ocean out there too, 00:13:01.04\00:13:02.38 as well. 00:13:02.41\00:13:03.75 I don't mind having my teeth pulled 00:13:03.78\00:13:05.11 with that beautiful scenery in the background, 00:13:05.15\00:13:06.48 or having your eyes worked on 00:13:06.51\00:13:07.95 so that you can appreciate the scenery. 00:13:07.98\00:13:09.98 Amen. Amen. 00:13:10.02\00:13:11.45 You know, John, I think one thing 00:13:11.49\00:13:12.82 that's really important is that, 00:13:12.85\00:13:14.26 you know, without Eric and his family, 00:13:14.29\00:13:17.76 we would not have been able to do this. 00:13:17.79\00:13:20.40 They're being there and being involved 00:13:20.43\00:13:24.07 so heavily in the project 00:13:24.10\00:13:26.30 has just been a tremendous blessing, 00:13:26.33\00:13:29.20 a tremendous blessing. 00:13:29.24\00:13:30.61 Because when you talk about getting the equipment down 00:13:30.64\00:13:33.88 there that this center needs, I'm assuming that since 00:13:33.91\00:13:37.15 there wasn't a center like this, 00:13:37.18\00:13:40.35 then some of that equipment 00:13:40.42\00:13:41.75 had to come down like dental chairs, 00:13:41.78\00:13:44.09 all the things that is needed 00:13:44.12\00:13:45.45 for the ophthalmology equipment. 00:13:45.49\00:13:48.79 Don't have me say that all program long. 00:13:48.82\00:13:50.73 But... 00:13:50.76\00:13:52.09 It was that something that your family was instrumental 00:13:52.13\00:13:54.56 in getting all that into that island. 00:13:54.60\00:13:55.93 Absolutely. 00:13:55.96\00:13:57.47 We help with some of the arrangements 00:13:57.50\00:13:58.97 for that after Dr. Ing and Dr. Chang 00:13:59.00\00:14:02.44 found the equipment that we needed for the facility. 00:14:02.47\00:14:04.67 Okay. 00:14:04.71\00:14:06.04 And then putting it together like segmenting 00:14:06.07\00:14:08.04 where it's gonna go, what office is gonna be what? 00:14:08.08\00:14:11.28 How did you... Was that a collective effort? 00:14:11.31\00:14:14.38 Pretty much. 00:14:14.42\00:14:15.75 We had to bring the container to my office 00:14:15.78\00:14:17.95 because most of the equipment came from my office 00:14:17.99\00:14:19.72 and we stuffed it full as much as 00:14:19.75\00:14:22.09 we could with all the equipment. 00:14:22.12\00:14:23.46 There's a lot of legwork where it had to be done 00:14:23.53\00:14:25.36 to fill it driving all over the California 00:14:25.39\00:14:27.53 to pick up the equipment and put it in. 00:14:27.60\00:14:29.53 And luckily everything worked out 00:14:29.56\00:14:31.27 and God provide all the needs and the means. 00:14:31.30\00:14:33.87 That's good. 00:14:33.94\00:14:35.27 So when you think about putting together a center like this, 00:14:35.30\00:14:37.71 what makes it unique 00:14:37.74\00:14:39.44 'cause we talked about it's located in Palau. 00:14:39.47\00:14:43.38 So is this something that you were inspired 00:14:43.45\00:14:46.61 by because it's on other islands or is this the first? 00:14:46.65\00:14:49.98 Well, we have a heart for people who are suffering. 00:14:50.02\00:14:52.32 And in these islands, there's lack of medical care. 00:14:52.35\00:14:55.69 And if you need help, you need to go off island. 00:14:55.72\00:14:58.96 There's a lot of cost involved going off island 00:14:58.99\00:15:00.70 to the Philippines, or to Guam, 00:15:00.73\00:15:02.90 or to United States for medical field, 00:15:02.93\00:15:04.87 even dental help. 00:15:04.90\00:15:06.23 So we saw the need and we thought, 00:15:06.27\00:15:09.04 if we can provide that. 00:15:09.07\00:15:10.41 We believe the medical arm 00:15:10.44\00:15:11.91 is the right hand of the gospel. 00:15:11.94\00:15:13.88 And so we felt we could be there to help the people. 00:15:13.91\00:15:17.45 The people who can't even afford to get off the island. 00:15:17.48\00:15:19.55 And so it's a nonprofit center 00:15:19.58\00:15:21.65 that meets the needs of the people spiritually, 00:15:21.68\00:15:24.62 and mentally, and physically. 00:15:24.65\00:15:26.32 Okay. 00:15:26.35\00:15:27.69 But getting back to one of your questions, 00:15:27.72\00:15:29.06 how do we do this? 00:15:29.09\00:15:31.29 The building was fairly empty when we first got it. 00:15:31.33\00:15:34.10 And thanks to Eric's family, 00:15:34.13\00:15:37.07 we were up to remodel everything. 00:15:37.10\00:15:38.87 And so Steve designed the dental side. 00:15:38.90\00:15:41.04 Okay. 00:15:41.07\00:15:42.40 Me and my wife designed the ophthalmology side. 00:15:42.44\00:15:44.81 We got to design the operating room suite. 00:15:44.84\00:15:47.88 And I brought in the same microscope 00:15:47.91\00:15:49.84 that I used at my center in the United States, 00:15:49.88\00:15:52.71 I brought in the same gurneys. 00:15:52.75\00:15:54.72 The same operative room chair, 00:15:54.75\00:15:56.45 we use some of the same equipment 00:15:56.48\00:15:59.32 that we use. 00:15:59.35\00:16:00.69 So we are providing, you know, first class, 00:16:00.76\00:16:03.46 you know, first world quality of care in ophthalmology. 00:16:03.53\00:16:08.13 Just like in United States. 00:16:08.16\00:16:09.73 I like that. Just like the United States. 00:16:09.76\00:16:11.30 That's important because a lot of times I've been... 00:16:11.33\00:16:13.97 My wife and I've gone to lot of countries 00:16:14.04\00:16:15.57 and in some of the countries, we've said, 00:16:15.60\00:16:19.61 "I don't wanna get sick here." 00:16:19.64\00:16:21.28 Because you think, whoa, we met people that said, 00:16:21.31\00:16:23.98 "I own a hospital." Yeah. 00:16:24.05\00:16:25.78 And we said, "Well, then are you a doctor?" 00:16:25.81\00:16:27.95 No, I'm just involved in shipping and receiving, 00:16:27.98\00:16:31.02 but I own a hospital, I've pharmaceuticals 00:16:31.05\00:16:33.19 and I remember getting some medication once 00:16:33.22\00:16:36.42 and I brought it back home to America. 00:16:36.46\00:16:37.79 They said, "That's only by prescription in America, 00:16:37.83\00:16:40.20 where did you get that from?" 00:16:40.23\00:16:41.56 Oh, there's a doctor I met in this particular country. 00:16:41.60\00:16:43.67 So you guys are bringing professional care, 00:16:43.70\00:16:46.30 understanding the parameters of how it operates. 00:16:46.33\00:16:49.24 And you're taking to the people. 00:16:49.27\00:16:51.17 When a person comes to the center, 00:16:51.21\00:16:53.38 let's talk about the process. 00:16:53.41\00:16:55.01 So how do the people pay 00:16:55.04\00:16:59.21 for this or is it a free service? 00:16:59.25\00:17:01.88 Well, Eric, you might wanna describe the medical system. 00:17:01.92\00:17:05.55 Yeah, we have two full-time dentists 00:17:05.59\00:17:07.76 and an optometrist at the facility. 00:17:07.79\00:17:10.23 So there is some, 00:17:10.26\00:17:11.86 we made it a sustainable clinic. 00:17:11.89\00:17:13.26 Okay. 00:17:13.29\00:17:14.63 So there are fees. 00:17:14.66\00:17:16.26 But there are specialists who come in like when Dr. Ing 00:17:16.30\00:17:20.37 and Dr. Chang come in, 00:17:20.44\00:17:21.77 there's additional work that's done. 00:17:21.80\00:17:23.14 Some of it is done free. 00:17:23.17\00:17:25.21 And, yeah, we were fortunate to have them come in. 00:17:25.24\00:17:28.18 Wow. 00:17:28.21\00:17:29.54 With the organization that I'm involved 00:17:29.58\00:17:31.05 with the sponsors and supply, 00:17:31.08\00:17:32.88 gives us the medical supplies, intraocular lenses, 00:17:32.91\00:17:35.52 it's called surgical eye expeditions. 00:17:35.55\00:17:37.75 And we do not charge anything for eye surgeries 00:17:37.79\00:17:41.32 when we go there because everything is donated. 00:17:41.36\00:17:43.29 Wow. 00:17:43.32\00:17:44.66 That's good because eye surgery could be pretty pricey. 00:17:44.69\00:17:47.60 That's right. I mean... 00:17:47.63\00:17:48.96 But, Eric, maybe you can talk a little bit about the... 00:17:49.00\00:17:51.50 There's a healthcare system in Palau, 00:17:51.53\00:17:52.97 that's actually quite more advanced 00:17:53.00\00:17:55.60 than many of the other islands. 00:17:55.64\00:17:57.34 Okay, yeah, go ahead. 00:17:57.41\00:17:58.74 We have a medical savings account, 00:17:58.77\00:18:01.64 part of the healthcare insurance 00:18:01.68\00:18:03.85 that each person that works contributes to the fund 00:18:03.88\00:18:07.42 that they can use to charge at the clinic. 00:18:07.45\00:18:10.69 It's a government run program 00:18:10.72\00:18:12.49 similar to what they have in Singapore. 00:18:12.52\00:18:14.76 That's interesting. 00:18:14.79\00:18:16.12 So people that are employed locally 00:18:16.16\00:18:18.76 or just on the island itself, 00:18:18.79\00:18:20.80 there's a contribution toward that. 00:18:20.83\00:18:22.33 Yes, the employers and employee contribution to that, 00:18:22.36\00:18:24.80 so there's a fund that they can use. 00:18:24.83\00:18:26.17 That's good. 00:18:26.20\00:18:27.54 So they're not coming in there completely incapacitated 00:18:27.57\00:18:30.34 to not be able to afford it at all. 00:18:30.41\00:18:31.74 Yes. 00:18:31.77\00:18:33.11 There's some kind of contribution. 00:18:33.14\00:18:34.48 And we do a lot of free things as well. 00:18:34.51\00:18:35.94 We bring mission groups in as well and do service 00:18:35.98\00:18:39.75 there as well as go out to the other islands as well 00:18:39.78\00:18:42.45 to help them there. 00:18:42.48\00:18:43.82 And it is a model of a sustainable 00:18:43.89\00:18:46.35 so we charge enough to cover our expenses. 00:18:46.39\00:18:48.49 Okay. 00:18:48.52\00:18:49.86 So if we come to Palau, 00:18:49.89\00:18:51.86 after the people have eye surgery... 00:18:51.89\00:18:55.46 Name some of the eye surgeries, you do cataracts? 00:18:55.50\00:18:58.83 Yeah, that's correct. 00:18:58.87\00:19:01.10 In Palau right now, the main surgery 00:19:01.14\00:19:02.97 that we're doing is cataract surgery. 00:19:03.00\00:19:04.47 Cataract is still the leading cause of blindness worldwide. 00:19:04.51\00:19:07.81 We also do pterygium surgery. 00:19:07.84\00:19:10.18 That's a fleshy growth that grows over the cornea 00:19:10.25\00:19:13.55 and can block the vision, 00:19:13.62\00:19:15.12 cause large amounts of a stigmatism. 00:19:15.15\00:19:18.15 And it's very common in the equatorial climates 00:19:18.19\00:19:21.82 where there's a lot of ultraviolet light. 00:19:21.86\00:19:24.13 And people that are fishermen or farmers, 00:19:24.16\00:19:26.70 you know, it's very common for them to get these growths. 00:19:26.73\00:19:29.53 And that's probably the most 00:19:29.56\00:19:31.47 common surgery that we do there. 00:19:31.50\00:19:34.07 Okay, and what about on the dentist side. 00:19:34.14\00:19:37.51 What are some of the challenges? 00:19:37.54\00:19:39.57 Well, like I said, 00:19:39.61\00:19:40.98 they don't have multiple services, 00:19:41.01\00:19:42.34 so they don't do any root canals 00:19:42.38\00:19:43.85 and they don't do difficult, 00:19:43.88\00:19:46.21 even moderate extractions, definitely, don't do implants 00:19:46.25\00:19:50.99 or ortho or TMD treatment, migraine headaches. 00:19:51.02\00:19:54.09 So we're able to rotate doctors through from the United States 00:19:54.16\00:19:57.53 every two months to work on those specialties. 00:19:57.56\00:19:59.93 So we provide implants, orthodontics, TMD, 00:20:00.00\00:20:04.07 root canal service, complex, full-bony extractions, 00:20:04.10\00:20:07.24 the full gambit of that. 00:20:07.27\00:20:08.60 Yeah. 00:20:08.64\00:20:09.97 Have you seen the impact, Eric, on this clinic existing? 00:20:10.01\00:20:12.91 And how long has it been in it? 00:20:12.94\00:20:15.08 How long has it been opened? 00:20:15.11\00:20:16.44 The clinic opened in April 26, 2017. 00:20:16.48\00:20:18.98 And... Okay. 00:23:10.62\00:23:12.12 One international airport. 00:23:12.15\00:23:13.49 Okay, that's good. 00:23:13.56\00:23:14.89 So people that are on other islands, 00:23:14.92\00:23:17.76 you put that whole schedule together, 00:23:17.79\00:23:20.00 people are scheduled in advance. 00:23:20.03\00:23:21.36 So you know that on this particular day, 00:23:21.40\00:23:24.20 so the clinic is opened every day? 00:23:24.27\00:23:27.84 Not every day. 00:23:27.87\00:23:29.20 We're open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. 00:23:29.24\00:23:30.97 Okay. 00:23:31.01\00:23:32.34 Wednesday is what we call a missionary outreach day 00:23:32.37\00:23:34.68 where they go to the old age center, 00:23:34.71\00:23:37.38 and they do exercises and worship with the elderly. 00:23:37.45\00:23:40.72 And then sometimes they also go to the prison. 00:23:40.75\00:23:42.98 They do prison ministries. 00:23:43.02\00:23:44.55 And now Dr. Ing, you talked about 00:23:44.59\00:23:46.69 the spiritual side of this, 00:23:46.76\00:23:48.89 not only making the difference in their physical side, 00:23:48.92\00:23:52.66 but you talked about the medical missionary side. 00:23:52.69\00:23:55.23 Amplify that a little bit 00:23:55.26\00:23:56.60 because a lot of times people say, 00:23:56.67\00:23:58.03 "Okay, great." 00:23:58.07\00:23:59.40 You know, we're doing something for them. 00:23:59.43\00:24:01.90 Hopefully they'll find out about the gospel. 00:24:01.94\00:24:03.91 You guys are pretty intentional about that. 00:24:03.94\00:24:05.77 Tell us how you do that? 00:24:05.81\00:24:07.18 That's right, John, thank you 00:24:07.21\00:24:08.54 so much for asking that question. 00:24:08.58\00:24:10.15 So what we do is when patients come in to the clinic, 00:24:10.18\00:24:13.82 we'll talk to them about not just their eye health, 00:24:15.55\00:24:18.92 but their physical health. 00:24:18.95\00:24:20.66 In the islands, unfortunately, lifestyle diseases are rampant. 00:24:20.69\00:24:25.83 Diabetes, obesity, hypertension, 00:24:25.86\00:24:30.80 a whole gamut of lifestyle diseases. 00:24:30.87\00:24:34.07 And so what our goal is 00:24:34.14\00:24:35.67 at the Palau Adventist Wellness Center 00:24:35.70\00:24:38.07 is through the use of student missionaries 00:24:38.11\00:24:42.18 who have an understanding 00:24:42.21\00:24:43.55 of the health message of our church, 00:24:43.58\00:24:45.95 we offer to the patient an opportunity 00:24:45.98\00:24:50.72 for somebody to come to their house, 00:24:50.79\00:24:54.09 to their home, and teach them about health. 00:24:54.16\00:24:57.36 Health coaching, maybe teaching them how to set up 00:24:57.43\00:25:00.93 an exercise program, 00:25:00.96\00:25:02.76 how to meal plan, 00:25:02.80\00:25:04.73 and how to maybe even cook simple 00:25:04.77\00:25:06.47 dishes in their home, using the foods and stuff 00:25:06.50\00:25:09.57 that are available there on the island. 00:25:09.60\00:25:11.21 Okay. 00:25:11.24\00:25:12.57 In that way, I believe friendships and relationships 00:25:12.61\00:25:16.11 can be formed that may lead 00:25:16.14\00:25:18.15 to Bible study or perhaps 00:25:18.18\00:25:20.22 when an evangelist 00:25:20.25\00:25:21.58 like yourself comes to the island, 00:25:21.62\00:25:23.28 they can be invited to the series 00:25:23.32\00:25:26.49 and are more likely to come 00:25:26.52\00:25:28.59 because of the help they've received, 00:25:28.62\00:25:30.43 not only in the acute medical or dental care setting, 00:25:30.46\00:25:34.36 but also in the relationship 00:25:34.40\00:25:36.33 that is formed through this friendship. 00:25:36.36\00:25:38.30 That's good. 00:25:38.33\00:25:39.67 So you're literally doing the... 00:25:39.70\00:25:41.80 I think it's in the Book of James, 00:25:41.84\00:25:43.44 if a person, 00:25:43.51\00:25:44.84 if you see a person that's hungry and destitute, 00:25:44.87\00:25:46.61 don't have clothing, 00:25:46.68\00:25:48.21 and you don't take care of their needs, 00:25:48.24\00:25:50.55 then you're really road blocking that individual 00:25:50.58\00:25:53.28 from knowing about the gospel. 00:25:53.31\00:25:54.65 But if you take care of their needs, 00:25:54.68\00:25:56.99 and they begin to see and I like that whole ideology, 00:25:57.02\00:25:59.32 it's not just them coming to the clinic, 00:25:59.35\00:26:02.42 but you can, they'll allow you to come to their homes 00:26:02.46\00:26:04.99 and set these programs up. 00:26:05.03\00:26:06.36 You know, Pastor, 00:26:06.39\00:26:08.33 you're reemphasizing the point so beautifully. 00:26:08.36\00:26:11.70 You see there's humanitarian work, 00:26:11.73\00:26:14.04 and I can go overseas and do cataract surgery 00:26:14.07\00:26:16.91 or pterygium surgery or whatever, 00:26:16.94\00:26:19.01 and not say a word about Jesus. 00:26:19.04\00:26:22.01 But the way that we do things, we want to be very intentional. 00:26:22.04\00:26:26.21 And I'm thankful for Steve and his work the way 00:26:26.25\00:26:29.58 that he does it and for inviting me 00:26:29.62\00:26:31.62 to be able to become involved in it. 00:26:31.65\00:26:33.29 Okay. 00:26:33.36\00:26:34.69 Are there days in the week 00:26:34.72\00:26:36.06 that the center has a different function? 00:26:36.09\00:26:38.09 'Cause as you mentioned, there are days it's open, 00:26:38.13\00:26:39.89 there are days it is not. 00:26:39.93\00:26:41.96 Yeah, Wednesday is just for mission 00:26:42.00\00:26:43.87 so that center is not open. 00:26:43.90\00:26:45.90 They go on outreach 00:26:45.93\00:26:47.44 and they also visit shut-ins like 00:26:47.47\00:26:49.00 Dr. Ing was saying. 00:26:49.04\00:26:50.41 Okay, amplify that because missions, 00:26:50.44\00:26:53.11 Wednesday's mission day. 00:26:53.14\00:26:54.61 Yes. And what does that entail? 00:26:54.64\00:26:58.25 The clinic works in coordination with the church. 00:26:58.28\00:27:00.95 Okay. 00:27:00.98\00:27:02.32 And they find elderly that are shut-ins. 00:27:02.35\00:27:05.55 And they go out to visit them 00:27:05.59\00:27:06.96 and they try to also do some health 00:27:06.99\00:27:08.96 and wellness at the elderly center, 00:27:08.99\00:27:11.96 old age center. 00:27:11.99\00:27:13.33 And then they go to the prison 00:27:13.40\00:27:14.73 and they do Bible studies with the inmates. 00:27:14.76\00:27:16.33 Okay. 00:27:16.36\00:27:17.70 So it's not just people coming to you, 00:27:17.73\00:27:19.60 but you're going to people? 00:27:19.63\00:27:20.97 And they've had some good results. 00:27:21.97\00:27:23.41 I've had some baptisms from those as well. 00:27:23.44\00:27:25.34 Okay. 00:27:25.37\00:27:26.71 And if you think about... 00:27:26.78\00:27:28.11 If you would put this in the category of importance, 00:27:28.14\00:27:30.85 how would you say the community is responding to it? 00:27:30.88\00:27:34.65 What kind of input you're getting? 00:27:37.42\00:27:38.75 I think it's been very positive. 00:27:38.79\00:27:40.16 They like the visitations. 00:27:40.19\00:27:42.19 So we've had very good feedback, yeah. 00:27:42.22\00:27:44.13 And, in the size of the island, let me give an example. 00:27:44.16\00:27:47.13 Would it be a long period of time 00:27:47.20\00:27:48.96 if somebody is on Palau, they said, 00:27:49.00\00:27:50.47 "Well, this is too far for me to get to." 00:27:50.50\00:27:52.27 Is it's centrally located? 00:27:52.30\00:27:54.07 It's in Koror. 00:27:54.14\00:27:55.47 It's near the downtown so it's maybe five minutes 00:27:55.50\00:27:58.54 from the middle of town. 00:27:58.57\00:27:59.91 Okay. If that. 00:27:59.94\00:28:01.28 Now medical missionary students, 00:28:01.31\00:28:02.64 you talked about 00:28:02.68\00:28:04.05 when we showed one of the pictures there, 00:28:04.08\00:28:05.41 you had missionary students, 00:28:05.45\00:28:06.78 how do they get to be involved in that project? 00:28:06.82\00:28:10.39 Well, you know, you could be a student missionary 00:28:10.42\00:28:12.75 go around the world and teach in schools. 00:28:12.79\00:28:15.06 Ours is the only place 00:28:15.09\00:28:16.42 that you could get medical dental experience, 00:28:16.46\00:28:18.36 firsthand 00:28:18.39\00:28:19.83 and learned experience 00:28:19.86\00:28:21.63 for a period of one semester or two semesters as a student 00:28:21.66\00:28:24.90 missionary. 00:28:24.93\00:28:26.27 So it's a great opportunity for anyone 00:28:26.30\00:28:27.64 who's interested in the healthcare field, 00:28:27.67\00:28:29.00 even not that they could come and experience that 00:28:29.04\00:28:31.54 and get firsthand knowledge of what we're doing. 00:28:31.57\00:28:34.28 So in other words, you're saying 00:28:34.31\00:28:35.64 they could do interning 00:28:35.68\00:28:37.35 and that'll count towards their experience. 00:28:37.38\00:28:38.98 You know, Eric, I believe is visiting 00:28:40.12\00:28:42.72 the different colleges, 00:28:42.75\00:28:44.45 the Adventist Colleges throughout the United States, 00:28:44.49\00:28:47.26 and we want to 00:28:47.29\00:28:50.13 recruit student missionaries. 00:28:50.16\00:28:52.06 These are people in college 00:28:52.09\00:28:53.53 and that are interested in either dentistry, 00:28:53.60\00:28:57.30 dental hygiene, medicine. 00:28:57.37\00:28:59.57 Nursing. 00:28:59.60\00:29:00.94 Probably ophthalmology, nursing, 00:29:00.97\00:29:02.54 and they can come and get some hands on experience. 00:29:02.57\00:29:06.07 Okay, so are you on your college tour now 00:29:06.11\00:29:09.91 or that's gonna be something coming up later? 00:29:09.94\00:29:12.51 Well, the clinic started with getting student missionaries 00:29:12.55\00:29:14.78 from Weimar. 00:29:14.82\00:29:16.15 And I was able to talk to a student missionary 00:29:16.18\00:29:19.29 who came to Palau to teach 00:29:19.32\00:29:20.76 and we were able to get the connection for Southern. 00:29:20.79\00:29:22.79 So Southern University has been sending student missionaries. 00:29:22.82\00:29:25.89 And since my son is going to Walla Walla, 00:29:25.93\00:29:28.53 I went there and I also 00:29:28.56\00:29:29.90 talk with the student mission's team, 00:29:29.93\00:29:31.33 and they're very interested to send missionaries down. 00:29:31.37\00:29:34.57 And then later on, I'll be going to visit PUC, 00:29:34.60\00:29:38.44 to see if they can send some people our way. 00:29:38.47\00:29:40.78 Pacific Union College? Yes. 00:29:40.81\00:29:42.14 Pacific Union College. 00:29:42.18\00:29:43.55 Yes, 'cause I know PUC years ago 00:29:43.58\00:29:44.91 used to mean Philippine Union College 00:29:44.95\00:29:46.28 until they changed it AUP. 00:29:46.31\00:29:47.78 You know, 'cause that is... 00:29:47.82\00:29:49.15 Yeah, I think we would be accepting missionaries 00:29:49.18\00:29:51.09 in Philippines as well too, win-win. 00:29:51.12\00:29:52.82 Yes. Yeah. We could do that. 00:29:52.85\00:29:54.19 That's good there. 00:29:54.26\00:29:55.59 So if you would look down the road at the center, 00:29:55.62\00:29:58.93 what do you think you would like to add to it? 00:29:58.96\00:30:02.06 If you decide what the future of the center is? 00:30:02.10\00:30:05.13 Right now we're at full capacity 00:30:05.17\00:30:06.94 with the optical coming in. 00:30:06.97\00:30:08.90 All the six apartments are pretty much full. 00:30:08.94\00:30:11.94 And if we want to grow 00:30:11.97\00:30:14.08 and we look like we're gonna grow more, 00:30:14.11\00:30:16.14 we're looking into expanding getting dormitories 00:30:16.18\00:30:18.48 for the student missionaries. 00:30:18.51\00:30:19.85 And we also have visiting doctors, 00:30:19.88\00:30:21.22 not just an eye and dental, 00:30:21.25\00:30:22.88 but we also have dermatologists and other specialists 00:30:22.92\00:30:25.99 who are coming and interested in coming. 00:30:26.02\00:30:28.42 So we need housing. 00:30:28.46\00:30:30.06 So we need housing to, you know, support the clinic. 00:30:30.13\00:30:34.00 And we also have calls from other places. 00:30:34.03\00:30:36.67 I do missions around other islands 00:30:36.70\00:30:38.30 and other places in South America, 00:30:38.33\00:30:39.93 places like that, Africa, 00:30:39.97\00:30:41.77 and they hear about what we're doing there. 00:30:41.80\00:30:44.41 And they said, "We want that too." 00:30:44.44\00:30:46.14 So I've had offers from even a Mormon person 00:30:46.17\00:30:49.41 in Fiji says, "I wanna give you my land, 00:30:49.44\00:30:51.98 you could build a clinic there." 00:30:52.01\00:30:53.35 And I have had offers in Tanga. 00:30:53.42\00:30:54.78 So there are places that we could go, 00:30:54.82\00:30:57.69 but we just, you know, 00:30:57.72\00:30:59.62 God's timing, we will make it happen. 00:30:59.65\00:31:01.79 You know what I'm hearing 00:31:01.82\00:31:03.16 and I'm pulling all this together in my head. 00:31:03.19\00:31:04.89 I'm hearing that 00:31:04.93\00:31:06.26 when you enter with something that benefits everyone, 00:31:06.29\00:31:09.80 it makes room for the gospel. 00:31:09.83\00:31:11.17 Amen. 00:31:11.20\00:31:12.53 'Cause you talked about that, 00:31:12.57\00:31:13.94 health is not a denominational issue. 00:31:13.97\00:31:15.30 No. 00:31:15.34\00:31:16.67 If a person has bad eyesight 00:31:16.71\00:31:18.04 or, you know, their teeth, 00:31:18.07\00:31:19.41 they need a root canal or whatever the case may be 00:31:19.44\00:31:21.24 dentistry wise or ophthalmological, 00:31:21.28\00:31:23.58 is that the word? 00:31:23.65\00:31:24.98 That's right. 00:31:25.01\00:31:26.35 Hey, I did that, give myself a checkmark. 00:31:26.38\00:31:27.72 Good job. 00:31:27.75\00:31:29.08 Then they are not going to, you're not gonna say, 00:31:29.12\00:31:30.92 "Well, what church do you belong to?" 00:31:30.99\00:31:33.66 What is your beliefs? 00:31:33.69\00:31:35.59 That's the real health message 00:31:35.62\00:31:37.43 and that's following the method of Jesus. 00:31:37.46\00:31:39.13 Amen. 00:31:39.16\00:31:40.50 He took care of the needs of the people, thereby, 00:31:40.53\00:31:42.63 when the multitudes heard, where is He gonna be next? 00:31:42.66\00:31:45.67 They were there waiting for Him. 00:31:45.70\00:31:47.57 So you're actually planting seeds 00:31:47.64\00:31:50.01 that will produce as God's 00:31:50.04\00:31:51.77 in God's time harvest for the future. 00:31:51.81\00:31:54.18 And we believe that God's love does not have borders, 00:31:54.21\00:31:56.98 it doesn't have denominations. 00:31:57.05\00:31:59.65 You want to say something. 00:31:59.68\00:32:01.58 Well, you know, I want to segue on what Steve said 00:32:01.62\00:32:04.09 and emphasize that, you know, 00:32:04.12\00:32:05.65 this is a model, a unique model 00:32:05.69\00:32:08.02 that we think can be used 00:32:08.06\00:32:10.53 in other islands in the Pacific, 00:32:10.56\00:32:12.69 where they don't have good dental or eye care. 00:32:12.73\00:32:16.00 And one of the unique things that, 00:32:16.03\00:32:19.13 I think we'll see a picture later on 00:32:19.17\00:32:20.84 is that we actually believe 00:32:20.87\00:32:22.90 that we have one of the first full service optical, 00:32:22.94\00:32:27.38 first service optical in one of these islands. 00:32:27.41\00:32:30.75 And that is we have an optician that can actually, 00:32:30.78\00:32:33.55 you know, we get lens blanks, we grind them, 00:32:33.62\00:32:35.98 fit them, put them in frames... 00:32:36.02\00:32:37.39 Oh, wow. 00:32:37.42\00:32:38.75 We can actually do this within a few hours... 00:32:38.79\00:32:40.16 On the island? 00:32:40.19\00:32:41.52 Yeah, like LensCrafters on the island. 00:32:41.56\00:32:43.32 Okay, now that's huge. 00:32:43.36\00:32:45.19 That is huge. 00:32:45.23\00:32:46.56 And again, you know, we do this, 00:32:46.59\00:32:48.63 the glasses will be sold at a reasonable price 00:32:48.66\00:32:52.30 that's affordable by the people of the island, 00:32:52.33\00:32:56.00 but that helps to support the clinic, 00:32:56.04\00:32:58.91 so that it can be self-supporting. 00:32:58.94\00:33:00.78 You know what, 00:33:00.81\00:33:02.14 what I'm excited about when you hear that 00:33:02.18\00:33:03.51 because a lot of times in America 00:33:03.55\00:33:05.05 will have missionaries come from Palau 00:33:05.08\00:33:07.45 or any one of the islands and they'll say, 00:33:07.52\00:33:09.95 do you have any eyeglasses you're not using, you know, 00:33:09.98\00:33:14.26 have you had upgrade on your prescription 00:33:14.29\00:33:16.83 that you no longer need that strength. 00:33:16.86\00:33:18.56 So they'll collect like, you know, 00:33:18.59\00:33:19.93 300 pairs of glasses for two months 00:33:20.00\00:33:22.10 and they take a whole box of glasses back 00:33:22.13\00:33:24.30 to one of these islands in the Pacific. 00:33:24.33\00:33:26.43 And people come by and say, "Well, does that work for me?" 00:33:26.47\00:33:28.80 But you're talking about the revolutionizing 00:33:28.84\00:33:31.51 of we can get glasses that are for you particularly. 00:33:31.54\00:33:35.38 That's right. 00:33:35.41\00:33:36.75 These are prescription glasses with brand new frames 00:33:36.78\00:33:39.55 and brand new lenses. 00:33:39.58\00:33:41.75 That would be equivalent to what you could get back 00:33:41.78\00:33:43.52 in the United States going to, 00:33:43.59\00:33:45.85 you know, any ophthalmologists, optometrists, or optical chain. 00:33:45.89\00:33:50.46 You might wanna call this Palau vision center. 00:33:50.53\00:33:54.70 There you go. 00:33:54.73\00:33:56.06 First out a chain of those in the islands. 00:33:56.10\00:33:57.77 That's an amazing thing. 00:33:57.80\00:33:59.13 That's a huge feat 00:33:59.17\00:34:00.54 when you think of where Palau is located 00:34:00.57\00:34:02.60 because the Philippines to the west, 00:34:02.64\00:34:04.74 Guam to the northeast, that's a long way to go. 00:34:04.77\00:34:08.38 And then if you got glasses, even if you got tested, 00:34:08.41\00:34:11.38 how long it's gonna take before it gets there. 00:34:11.41\00:34:13.01 Right. That's another thing. 00:34:13.05\00:34:14.48 Now when you go out into the community, 00:34:14.52\00:34:17.09 are you guys involved 00:34:17.12\00:34:18.45 with any of the local officials, 00:34:18.49\00:34:21.29 to the people of community come in, 00:34:21.32\00:34:23.36 come to the center? 00:34:23.43\00:34:24.76 Do they connect with you on any other programs inside, 00:34:24.79\00:34:26.80 in the community? 00:34:26.83\00:34:28.16 Yes. 00:34:28.20\00:34:29.53 I think everyone has access, 00:34:29.56\00:34:30.90 and I've met several of the chiefs 00:34:30.93\00:34:32.27 who come to the clinic 00:34:32.30\00:34:33.64 and get their healthcare done there. 00:34:33.67\00:34:35.07 So government officiates, 00:34:35.10\00:34:37.01 is the place to be to get your medical care. 00:34:37.04\00:34:40.58 The mother-in-law of the president 00:34:40.61\00:34:42.94 is a patient of ours, 00:34:42.98\00:34:44.31 and she comes to the clinic 00:34:44.35\00:34:45.71 and we helped her with a very complex, 00:34:45.75\00:34:48.95 difficult eye infection problem. 00:34:48.98\00:34:51.22 And now she loves coming to the clinic. 00:34:51.25\00:34:53.56 And the day that I left Palau a few months ago, 00:34:53.59\00:34:58.19 she arranged to meet with our optometrist 00:34:58.23\00:35:02.40 who is gonna go over the health message 00:35:02.43\00:35:05.33 and healthy lifestyle with our optometrists there. 00:35:05.37\00:35:09.07 Now, Eric, do you ever transport any other patients 00:35:09.10\00:35:11.67 by boat between the islands or? 00:35:11.71\00:35:15.01 We have not done, what we have done is 00:35:15.04\00:35:16.61 we worked with teams that have come in, 00:35:16.64\00:35:18.75 like the clinic has worked with Loma Linda this summer. 00:35:18.78\00:35:22.12 And we help with transportation to Peleliu. 00:35:22.15\00:35:25.55 Yeah. So... 00:35:25.59\00:35:26.96 So the nearest island to Palau 00:35:26.99\00:35:28.79 that's habited would be that one you mentioned? 00:35:28.82\00:35:32.13 Well, yeah, to Koror 00:35:32.16\00:35:33.83 because there are two main islands 00:35:33.90\00:35:35.33 that you can drive within, there are Babeldaob and Koror. 00:35:35.36\00:35:38.47 But then we have islands like Peleliu to the south 00:35:38.50\00:35:40.64 and Angaur in the southwest 00:35:40.67\00:35:42.40 that you need a boat and then to the north, 00:35:42.44\00:35:44.34 you need a boat to go to Kayangel. 00:35:44.37\00:35:46.24 And when Loma Linda came down with their team of around 30, 00:35:46.27\00:35:49.48 they needed to have transportation out 00:35:49.51\00:35:51.18 so we help them get them out there. 00:35:51.21\00:35:53.62 Do you ever do public evangelism 00:35:53.65\00:35:55.58 out in the community? 00:35:55.62\00:35:57.59 Like when I say public evangelism 00:35:57.62\00:35:59.75 like a tent or a major location 00:35:59.79\00:36:02.39 where everybody in town will know. 00:36:02.42\00:36:04.06 There's a cultural center. 00:36:04.13\00:36:05.66 Now my own cultural center where we do have... 00:36:05.69\00:36:08.43 Sometimes we have evangelistic meetings. 00:36:08.46\00:36:11.10 Now, there's a reason I'm asking that 00:36:11.13\00:36:12.47 because if I came and did an evangelistic series, 00:36:12.50\00:36:14.57 we could flow that whole, you know, 00:36:14.60\00:36:16.40 get people that are already signed up as patients, 00:36:16.44\00:36:19.44 send out invitations to all the patients 00:36:19.47\00:36:21.61 that have gone through the center, 00:36:21.64\00:36:23.45 publicly advertise it. 00:36:23.48\00:36:25.75 And make room for the Lord to continue His work. 00:36:25.78\00:36:28.42 Amen. 00:36:28.45\00:36:29.78 And then after we could do a snorkeling expedition. 00:36:29.82\00:36:33.76 I'll leave the deep sea diving for later on. 00:36:33.79\00:36:36.76 Now let's see some more pictures 00:36:36.83\00:36:38.16 and tell us what we're seeing here 00:36:38.19\00:36:39.53 because you talked about some of the medical equipment. 00:36:39.56\00:36:40.90 This is the closer team or just missionary? 00:36:40.93\00:36:43.47 That's the dental team 00:36:43.50\00:36:44.83 that was there at the first when we opened. 00:36:44.87\00:36:48.04 Okay. All right. 00:36:48.07\00:36:49.64 What do we have next? 00:36:49.67\00:36:51.41 That's the prison ministry with doctor, 00:36:51.44\00:36:54.88 the dermatologist who came to visit Dr. Kelly. 00:36:54.91\00:36:57.38 Okay, and that's you there in the bluish green shirt. 00:36:57.45\00:37:00.75 And my son on the right, 00:37:00.82\00:37:02.15 but I have two sons and two daughters. 00:37:02.18\00:37:03.59 Okay. 00:37:03.62\00:37:04.95 And we went to the prison and help out there. 00:37:04.99\00:37:06.79 Now that's amazing. 00:37:06.86\00:37:08.19 You know, you think of, I think the two things 00:37:08.22\00:37:11.13 that almost every place in the world has, 00:37:11.16\00:37:13.06 they have some place where people are incarcerated 00:37:13.09\00:37:15.86 and some place where people are getting healed. 00:37:15.90\00:37:18.43 How do you blend the two? 00:37:18.47\00:37:20.37 And do you do any of that kind of work 00:37:20.44\00:37:22.67 that you're talking about? 00:37:22.70\00:37:24.04 Are you allowed to do any of that in the facility, 00:37:24.11\00:37:26.88 the prison facilities? 00:37:26.91\00:37:28.68 Yes, the dentist actually goes to the facility 00:37:28.71\00:37:31.68 and does hygiene and takes care of their dental needs as well. 00:37:31.71\00:37:34.98 Okay. 00:37:35.02\00:37:36.35 So we're also providing care for free to the prisoners 00:37:36.38\00:37:38.72 and let them know that we care about them. 00:37:38.75\00:37:40.86 What's the average cost for something like this? 00:37:40.89\00:37:43.16 If you talk about, if I came to get my eye care, 00:37:43.19\00:37:47.10 by the way is the US dollars there 00:37:47.13\00:37:48.86 or is a different kind of currency? 00:37:48.90\00:37:50.47 US dollars. 00:37:50.50\00:37:51.83 US dollars. Okay. 00:37:51.87\00:37:53.20 So what is something like that around 00:37:53.23\00:37:54.57 if you think about...? 00:37:54.60\00:37:56.40 I think right now an eye exam is like $29. 00:37:56.44\00:38:00.71 Is that what it is? 00:38:00.78\00:38:02.11 And then if they want to buy glasses, of course, 00:38:02.14\00:38:03.85 it depends on what kind of frames they want 00:38:03.88\00:38:06.61 and there's a limited supply, 00:38:06.65\00:38:07.98 but we had a really nice optical display, 00:38:08.02\00:38:10.99 you know, so, you know, 00:38:11.02\00:38:12.35 they can get some fairly modern looking glasses. 00:38:12.39\00:38:14.99 And as a dentist, 00:38:15.02\00:38:16.52 do you also do implants 00:38:16.56\00:38:21.26 or any types of dentures and all that? 00:38:21.30\00:38:24.70 Oh, yeah, 00:38:24.73\00:38:26.07 everything that could be done here, 00:38:26.10\00:38:27.44 we do it there. 00:38:27.47\00:38:28.80 So we just provide implants, dentures, 00:38:28.84\00:38:31.77 implant-supported dentures as well. 00:38:31.81\00:38:33.68 So full mouth reconstruction, and orthodontics, 00:38:33.71\00:38:36.14 which is very difficult to do overseas, 00:38:36.18\00:38:37.65 but we do it there too. 00:38:37.68\00:38:39.01 Wow. 00:38:39.05\00:38:40.42 So now looking at the future development 00:38:40.45\00:38:41.78 of this as the financial, 00:38:41.82\00:38:43.15 as the person that's involved in the treasury work 00:38:43.18\00:38:46.39 of the Palau Adventist Wellness Center. 00:38:46.42\00:38:49.59 How do you see the future 00:38:49.62\00:38:51.06 as it comes to expanding the facility? 00:38:51.09\00:38:54.10 What are some of the visions you have for that? 00:38:54.13\00:38:55.53 Yeah, the clinic is doing well. 00:38:55.56\00:38:58.73 We have funds to sustain it. 00:38:58.77\00:39:00.44 But we also have a vision 00:39:00.47\00:39:02.40 of upgrading some of the equipment 00:39:02.44\00:39:04.57 and maybe adding some other equipment. 00:39:04.61\00:39:06.78 Maybe Dr. Ing and Dr. Chang can go into more detail 00:39:06.81\00:39:09.28 on what specific equipment we would be looking at. 00:39:09.31\00:39:12.55 Okay, well, let's talk about that 00:39:12.58\00:39:13.92 because you wanna make sure that. 00:39:13.95\00:39:15.28 Right. 00:39:15.32\00:39:16.69 To a location, it's difficult 00:39:16.72\00:39:18.05 to get quality crowns in specifically, 00:39:18.09\00:39:20.59 that has to come from outside the country. 00:39:20.66\00:39:24.13 And so, we're looking to try and get equipment 00:39:24.16\00:39:27.00 that we can make the crowns in the clinic itself. 00:39:27.03\00:39:29.96 So you could do a one day service crown. 00:39:30.00\00:39:31.97 Really? 00:39:32.00\00:39:33.34 Yeah, so those equipment costs money, 00:39:33.37\00:39:34.94 and it sustains itself, 00:39:34.97\00:39:36.50 but we don't have big funds 00:39:36.54\00:39:37.87 for the bigger equipment that we need. 00:39:37.91\00:39:39.34 So ballpark? 00:39:39.37\00:39:41.68 Well, brand new, they're around $100,000. 00:39:41.71\00:39:43.48 Wow. 00:39:43.55\00:39:44.88 But then what's the benefit of it would be... 00:39:44.91\00:39:46.28 Benefit is that you get quality crowns in one day. 00:39:46.31\00:39:51.05 And that's huge pursuit. 00:39:51.09\00:39:52.92 Just like root canal then or...? 00:39:52.95\00:39:55.89 See, the crowns are necessary 00:39:55.92\00:39:57.43 when the tooth is compromised structurally, 00:39:57.46\00:39:59.19 so you need to protect that. 00:39:59.23\00:40:00.60 So that's when we do a crown 00:40:00.63\00:40:01.96 on a root canal tooth or other teeth 00:40:02.00\00:40:03.47 that they crushed or broken due to other factors. 00:40:03.50\00:40:07.77 Because I know watching the program 00:40:07.80\00:40:09.57 and listening to the program, 00:40:09.60\00:40:10.94 there are people that are, 00:40:10.97\00:40:12.31 "Hey, you know, I'm able, 00:40:12.34\00:40:13.78 I'm willing to be able to participate 00:40:13.81\00:40:16.44 in that kind of ministry." 00:40:16.48\00:40:18.18 When we talk about the health ministry, 00:40:18.21\00:40:21.25 and when we talk about the missionary aspect of it 00:40:21.28\00:40:26.05 because you talked about the entering of the... 00:40:26.09\00:40:29.09 the entering wedge of the message 00:40:29.12\00:40:32.06 or the three angels' messages. 00:40:32.09\00:40:35.50 Do you talk to your patients? Do they feel comfortable? 00:40:35.53\00:40:38.83 If you talk to them about the spiritual side, 00:40:38.87\00:40:41.74 do you pray with them before you head to surgeries? 00:40:41.77\00:40:44.44 Oh, absolutely, Pastor. 00:40:44.47\00:40:47.28 The way that I deal with patients 00:40:47.31\00:40:50.15 even here in my practice in the United States 00:40:50.18\00:40:52.48 is I talked to them 00:40:52.51\00:40:54.22 as if God were an active part of my life. 00:40:54.25\00:40:57.29 Amen. 00:40:57.32\00:40:58.65 And, you know, talking to my patients 00:40:58.69\00:41:01.16 about God is as natural as talking to them 00:41:01.19\00:41:03.09 about the health of their eyes. 00:41:03.12\00:41:05.09 And so, we connect those very closely. 00:41:05.13\00:41:09.73 Absolutely. Yeah. 00:41:09.76\00:41:11.60 And for the church services. 00:41:11.63\00:41:14.40 You have a church there. 00:41:14.44\00:41:15.77 What size congregation do you have in Palau? 00:41:15.80\00:41:17.71 I think it's about 500. 00:41:17.74\00:41:19.21 Well, we have several churches, 00:41:19.24\00:41:20.58 but the main church in Koror is about 500 members. 00:41:20.61\00:41:23.95 Wow, that's wonderful. 00:41:23.98\00:41:25.78 And so I'm going into the... 00:41:25.81\00:41:27.52 I'm diving back into the health aspects of it. 00:41:27.55\00:41:29.32 Do you have a health feature 00:41:29.35\00:41:31.05 since that's a big part of the ministry? 00:41:31.09\00:41:32.95 Yeah, when we first opened a clinic, 00:41:32.99\00:41:34.79 Palau was the most obese country in the world, 00:41:34.82\00:41:37.99 ranked number one in the world. 00:41:38.03\00:41:40.00 And now they're ranked number eight, 00:41:40.03\00:41:41.96 and we like to think that 00:41:42.00\00:41:43.37 we might have had some part of that. 00:41:43.40\00:41:44.73 Wow. Yeah. 00:41:44.77\00:41:46.10 Now what's the main diet of the people on the island? 00:41:46.13\00:41:50.21 What contributes to that? 00:41:50.24\00:41:52.01 Is it to their sugar cane there, 00:41:52.04\00:41:53.38 I don't know? 00:41:53.41\00:41:54.74 Well, before they ate natural foods, 00:41:54.78\00:41:57.25 but once that Western style foods came in, 00:41:57.28\00:42:02.12 they just became overweight. 00:42:02.15\00:42:03.59 And it just, diabetes is rampant. 00:42:03.62\00:42:06.49 Obesity is rampant. 00:42:06.52\00:42:07.86 And the disease that go along with the, 00:42:07.89\00:42:09.72 like these eye problems and dental problems as well. 00:42:09.76\00:42:13.03 It's not only there, it's in United States too. 00:42:13.06\00:42:14.83 Wow, the standard American diet, 00:42:14.86\00:42:17.00 that's the acronym... 00:42:17.07\00:42:18.40 Very sad. 00:42:18.43\00:42:19.77 Okay, you caught it. It's sad. 00:42:19.80\00:42:22.04 The standard American diet, 00:42:22.07\00:42:23.81 we are good at bringing in technology and advancing and, 00:42:23.84\00:42:29.24 but we also at the same time, 00:42:29.28\00:42:30.75 sometimes there are things that come into the society 00:42:30.78\00:42:32.61 that hampers that. 00:42:32.65\00:42:34.02 That's right. 00:42:34.05\00:42:35.38 So you talked about your children 00:42:35.42\00:42:36.75 and we're sitting in the order. 00:42:36.79\00:42:38.12 And I say this respectfully. 00:42:38.15\00:42:40.36 Two children, three children, four children, 00:42:40.39\00:42:45.06 have your children been to the island? 00:42:45.09\00:42:48.76 Yes. Oh, that's right. 00:42:48.80\00:42:50.17 Your son was there in the clinic. 00:42:50.20\00:42:51.53 Yeah, all my children have been to the island. 00:42:51.57\00:42:52.90 Actually, I started taking my little ones 00:42:52.93\00:42:55.07 ever since they were like maybe 18 months old 00:42:55.10\00:42:57.31 to like Cambodia and other places 00:42:57.34\00:42:59.41 and always, people always say, 00:42:59.44\00:43:00.78 "How can you take a little child overseas? 00:43:00.81\00:43:02.21 Is it dangerous?" I say, "No, it's not." 00:43:02.24\00:43:04.41 I mean, there's children over there too. 00:43:04.45\00:43:07.12 And they have a blast. 00:43:07.15\00:43:08.72 So it's ingrained in that. 00:43:08.75\00:43:10.09 It's good to help people 00:43:10.12\00:43:11.89 because I find that people who suffer the most 00:43:11.92\00:43:13.66 are the people who only think about themselves. 00:43:13.69\00:43:15.79 And when you serve and help other people, 00:43:15.82\00:43:19.13 you, it's... 00:43:19.16\00:43:20.50 As God said, it's better to give than to receive. 00:43:20.53\00:43:22.26 That's right. 00:43:22.30\00:43:23.67 And so, we as a family, 00:43:23.70\00:43:25.03 we've done many, many mission trips 00:43:25.07\00:43:26.40 every several times a year. 00:43:26.43\00:43:28.34 So you're ingraining 00:43:28.37\00:43:29.70 or at least planting those seeds 00:43:29.74\00:43:31.07 of mission mindedness in your children too. 00:43:31.11\00:43:32.77 Right. 00:43:32.81\00:43:34.18 And so, the first two children are now 00:43:34.21\00:43:35.91 in Dental/Medical School. 00:43:35.94\00:43:37.28 Okay. 00:43:37.35\00:43:38.68 Probably because we've done that. 00:43:38.71\00:43:40.05 Wow, look at that. 00:43:40.08\00:43:41.42 Yeah, I didn't, I wouldn't think 00:43:41.45\00:43:42.78 you had any children that older but then again, 00:43:42.82\00:43:44.15 you hold your age very well. 00:43:44.19\00:43:45.52 I'm not gonna ask you what that is. 00:43:45.55\00:43:47.06 But, Dr. Ing, I saw your son 00:43:47.09\00:43:49.62 was participating in one of the surgeries 00:43:49.66\00:43:52.06 that we saw on the screen. 00:43:52.09\00:43:53.93 You know, both of my kids have been overseas. 00:43:54.00\00:43:56.87 They've been to Ethiopia, 00:43:56.90\00:43:58.63 to Belize, the Philippines, to Cambodia. 00:43:58.67\00:44:04.21 And they love Palau. 00:44:04.24\00:44:05.94 Palau is their favorite. 00:44:05.97\00:44:07.64 Wow, Eric, what would you say to get people to come to Palau? 00:44:07.68\00:44:10.25 Well, Palau is a beautiful place 00:44:12.05\00:44:13.62 and we have beautiful people that are... 00:44:13.65\00:44:15.12 Amen. 00:44:15.15\00:44:16.48 Ready for the message and for the service. 00:44:16.52\00:44:17.99 My family lives in St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. 00:44:18.02\00:44:20.36 And I was sharing that with Dr. Chang. 00:44:20.39\00:44:22.39 He said, "Oh, wait a minute. 00:44:22.42\00:44:24.33 Those waters cannot compare." 00:44:24.36\00:44:25.96 Are they really that clear? 00:44:25.99\00:44:27.96 Not just clear. 00:44:28.00\00:44:29.33 It's bountiful of life that you would, 00:44:29.36\00:44:32.30 it's rated number one in diving in the world. 00:44:32.33\00:44:35.00 Okay. 00:44:35.04\00:44:36.37 I've been diving for over 40 years. 00:44:36.40\00:44:39.34 And Palau is one of the most beautiful places on earth 00:44:39.37\00:44:45.11 to go scuba diving. 00:44:45.15\00:44:46.48 I would say that there are places 00:44:46.51\00:44:48.88 that are as nice as Palau but no place is nicer. 00:44:48.92\00:44:51.85 How's that?
