Okay. 00:07:26.68\00:07:30.18 Even though, I was raised to be a Seventh-day Adventist. 00:07:30.25\00:07:33.62 The lure of easy money got me where I could... 00:07:33.65\00:07:36.42 At one time I could make, 00:07:36.45\00:07:39.19 you know, $30,000-40,000 in hour. 00:07:39.22\00:07:41.92 Wow. 00:07:41.96\00:07:43.29 And with ease, no problem. 00:07:43.32\00:07:46.19 But eventually, it got the best of me. 00:07:46.23\00:07:51.70 God let me taste a little bit of what it's like 00:07:51.73\00:07:54.54 to be junkie. 00:07:54.57\00:07:56.24 So I became an addict to the product I was selling, 00:07:56.27\00:08:00.18 which is cocaine. 00:08:00.21\00:08:02.21 And he gave me a taste 00:08:02.24\00:08:04.05 what I was doing to other people. 00:08:04.08\00:08:07.25 But at the end of that 00:08:07.32\00:08:10.52 and to make a long story short, 00:08:10.59\00:08:13.89 when I was in prison in doing time, 00:08:13.96\00:08:18.43 God showed me something that was lacking. 00:08:18.46\00:08:20.80 Okay. 00:08:20.83\00:08:22.53 There was nobody from 00:08:22.56\00:08:23.90 Seventh-day Adventist Church coming in. 00:08:23.97\00:08:26.00 They are in South Carolina Department of Corrections 00:08:26.03\00:08:29.84 and I couldn't understand that. 00:08:29.87\00:08:32.27 And at one time it took over two years for my mom 00:08:32.31\00:08:36.04 to even to get a pastor to come visit me. 00:08:36.08\00:08:39.65 So I said right then and there, 00:08:39.68\00:08:41.02 I said, "Lord if You would 00:08:41.05\00:08:44.35 let me be a solution to a problem 00:08:44.39\00:08:46.25 and not a problem." 00:08:46.29\00:08:48.59 So when after going to prison four times, stayed in federal. 00:08:48.62\00:08:54.53 I guess you can say I'm hard headed, like Peter. 00:08:54.56\00:08:59.20 I finally seen what the problem was, 00:08:59.23\00:09:01.30 the woman I had been with wasn't the right woman. 00:09:01.34\00:09:04.94 And every time that we've got out of prison, 00:09:04.97\00:09:07.38 we ended up going back because of our drug addiction. 00:09:07.41\00:09:11.58 And the last time I went in there, 00:09:11.61\00:09:13.28 I finally figured out this is not the right woman. 00:09:13.31\00:09:16.28 And I came out in 2000, 00:09:16.32\00:09:20.86 and in 2004 I came out in the federal prison. 00:09:20.89\00:09:25.53 Jim Wetmore, 00:09:25.56\00:09:26.90 who is now the prison ministry director 00:09:26.93\00:09:29.53 for North Carolina came in to visit me. 00:09:29.56\00:09:33.74 And before he came in, I had prayed to God, 00:09:33.77\00:09:37.01 "I said, Lord, if You want me 00:09:37.04\00:09:38.37 to be a part of prison ministry, 00:09:38.41\00:09:40.38 this man who I have never met will have to ask me out 00:09:40.41\00:09:42.54 when he gets here." 00:09:42.58\00:09:44.58 And thank God, He did. 00:09:44.61\00:09:46.45 'Cause I'm here today talking to you. 00:09:46.48\00:09:47.95 Wow! Amen. Amen. 00:09:47.98\00:09:50.59 I have been doing this for 19 years. 00:09:50.62\00:09:53.69 And the 19 years I have been out, 00:09:53.76\00:09:56.26 God has allowed me to be a pioneer at some things 00:09:56.29\00:09:58.49 that's never been done into Carolinas. 00:09:58.53\00:10:00.96 Like what? 00:10:01.00\00:10:02.33 For one, we have a church established 00:10:02.36\00:10:04.57 in legal correctional institution 00:10:04.60\00:10:06.37 for the first time. 00:10:06.40\00:10:07.87 Wow! 00:10:07.90\00:10:09.64 Amen. 00:10:09.67\00:10:11.27 We have Charleston Seventh-day Adventist, 00:10:11.31\00:10:15.71 we have Moncks Corner Seventh-day Adventist, 00:10:15.74\00:10:19.28 Summerville Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:10:19.31\00:10:21.22 and Shiloh Seventh-day Adventist 00:10:21.25\00:10:22.68 which is South Atlantic, working together, 00:10:22.72\00:10:26.05 going and administering to the church. 00:10:26.09\00:10:29.39 We have our Sabbath school, 00:10:29.42\00:10:31.43 then we have our worship service, 00:10:31.46\00:10:33.53 we have our elders and we have our deacons, 00:10:33.60\00:10:36.23 and we even have choir. 00:10:36.26\00:10:38.47 So we have a regular worship in there just like we did, 00:10:38.50\00:10:42.00 only difference is there is, no woman 00:10:42.04\00:10:44.01 except for the woman volunteers going in, 00:10:44.04\00:10:45.97 it's all men institution, maximum security. 00:10:46.01\00:10:50.25 And so where did the baptisms take place? 00:10:50.28\00:10:52.58 Is there... Right there. 00:10:52.61\00:10:53.95 Right there in... 00:10:54.02\00:10:55.35 Yeah, they have a portable baptismal. 00:10:55.38\00:10:56.72 And we baptize them right there. 00:10:56.75\00:10:59.42 Matter of fact, 00:10:59.45\00:11:00.79 we just had a baptism two weeks ago, 00:11:00.86\00:11:02.26 we baptized nine men. 00:11:02.29\00:11:04.33 Pastor Tony LA Porte, who is the pastor 00:11:04.36\00:11:06.63 to Charleston Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:11:06.70\00:11:08.90 came in and did baptism. 00:11:08.93\00:11:11.13 And, you know, I praise God 00:11:11.17\00:11:13.34 because when I started going in, 00:11:13.37\00:11:15.84 I had no intensions of making a church. 00:11:15.87\00:11:18.27 I was just going and seeing the men 00:11:18.31\00:11:20.48 because that's what I wanted when I was in there. 00:11:20.51\00:11:23.21 Yeah. 00:11:23.24\00:11:24.58 So my goal is to see every church 00:11:24.61\00:11:30.29 Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:11:30.32\00:11:31.95 South Carolina and North Carolina 00:11:31.99\00:11:34.36 be active in prison ministry going in 00:11:34.39\00:11:37.93 and ministering to those in need. 00:11:37.96\00:11:40.50 Amen. 00:11:40.53\00:11:41.86 That's my goal. That's a good goal. 00:11:41.90\00:11:43.23 Might take a rest of my life, 00:11:43.26\00:11:45.60 but God gave me a plan and a purpose. 00:11:45.63\00:11:48.37 Amen. This is my calling. 00:11:48.40\00:11:50.34 And, you know, 00:11:50.41\00:11:51.74 when you realize the plan and the purpose 00:11:51.77\00:11:53.71 that God has placed on your life, 00:11:53.78\00:11:55.38 you really feel that sense of fulfillment. 00:11:55.41\00:11:58.01 Like that's what you are supposed to be doing. 00:11:58.05\00:12:00.62 Yeah. Although it's my territory. 00:40:08.84\00:40:10.41 Yeah. 00:40:10.44\00:40:11.77 And I need help and God sends volunteers 00:40:11.81\00:40:13.58 to help me get it done. 00:40:13.61\00:40:15.28 But there are some times that, you know, 00:40:15.31\00:40:18.21 and I can understand a pastor saying, "No," 00:40:18.25\00:40:20.52 because sometimes our pastors 00:40:20.55\00:40:22.25 might be doing two or three churches at one time. 00:40:22.28\00:40:23.72 That's true, yeah. 00:40:23.79\00:40:25.69 My pastor right now 00:40:25.72\00:40:27.09 he's the leader for men's ministry 00:40:27.16\00:40:29.79 and he runs, the pastor 00:40:29.82\00:40:31.99 of the Charleston Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:40:32.03\00:40:33.70 Wow! 00:40:33.73\00:40:35.06 So he has his plate full. 00:40:35.10\00:40:36.67 Yes, yeah. 00:40:36.70\00:40:38.03 As well as I, but... 00:40:38.07\00:40:39.63 Stretched thin. 00:40:39.67\00:40:41.00 Well... In some places. 00:40:41.04\00:40:42.64 If you want to do something, you'll find a way. 00:40:42.67\00:40:45.87 You'll make a way, you'll look for that time slot, 00:40:45.91\00:40:48.64 you'll make a time slot forward, 00:40:48.68\00:40:50.45 that's all we're doing. 00:40:50.48\00:40:52.18 Bill, you want to say. 00:40:52.21\00:40:53.55 Yeah, on Wednesdays at Manning, 00:40:53.62\00:40:56.89 I'm usually the only one and on... 00:40:56.92\00:40:59.92 on Tuesdays at Broad River, 00:40:59.95\00:41:02.79 I'm usually the only one going in there 00:41:02.82\00:41:05.79 and it would help to have someone else beside me. 00:41:05.83\00:41:10.77 And I've been a Seventh-day Adventist for seven years, 00:41:10.80\00:41:14.50 so I'm a little bit short 00:41:14.54\00:41:16.71 on some of the teachings. 00:41:16.74\00:41:21.44 I'm trying to learn as much as I can. 00:41:21.48\00:41:25.91 Say age is against me. 00:41:25.95\00:41:28.52 But the inmates, 00:41:28.55\00:41:31.75 they welcome me. 00:41:31.79\00:41:34.56 We have quite a camaraderie 00:41:34.59\00:41:37.63 and we get along good, 00:41:37.66\00:41:41.86 but it's still to be the only one. 00:41:41.90\00:41:46.27 When you walk through that gate 00:41:46.30\00:41:47.94 and click, slam shut on you. 00:41:47.97\00:41:50.91 Yes. 00:41:50.94\00:41:52.41 You know that you're in there, 00:41:52.44\00:41:54.94 you're the only one in there like you are 00:41:54.98\00:41:58.65 and the rest of them, 00:41:58.68\00:42:00.12 you know, is not, not that friendly. 00:42:00.15\00:42:05.55 Maybe to me they might be since I worked in a prison, 00:42:05.59\00:42:10.46 but you need more people involved. 00:42:10.53\00:42:16.26 It would show to the inmate 00:42:16.30\00:42:19.13 that more people have a heart for them. 00:42:19.17\00:42:21.77 Yes. 00:42:21.80\00:42:23.74 As Christians, 00:42:23.81\00:42:25.44 we should be having a heart 00:42:25.47\00:42:29.31 for the lost souls. 00:42:29.34\00:42:31.31 We should have a dream winning people to the Lord, 00:42:31.35\00:42:36.25 not just me, myself and I. 00:42:36.28\00:42:38.19 Yeah. 00:42:38.22\00:42:39.55 We're not made of that. 00:42:39.59\00:42:41.09 We're not supposed to be made of that. 00:42:41.12\00:42:42.66 If that's it, then we need to get back down 00:42:42.69\00:42:45.13 to the altar ourselves. 00:42:45.16\00:42:48.70 Amen. 00:42:48.73\00:42:50.07 Yes. And you said it. 00:42:50.10\00:42:51.43 You said it for sure. 00:42:51.47\00:42:52.93 And then what the gospel supposed to be preached 00:42:52.97\00:42:57.01 to the whole world that includes prisons, 00:42:57.04\00:42:58.94 that includes those that are incarcerated. 00:42:58.97\00:43:01.41 You know, they are God want to reach those individuals. 00:43:01.44\00:43:05.51 Who do we consider the least of these? 00:43:05.55\00:43:08.82 The ones we think the least of 00:43:08.85\00:43:11.85 and when are we going to get a heart for that? 00:43:11.89\00:43:15.06 Yes. Yeah. 00:46:09.93\00:46:11.27 The blood will be required. 00:46:11.30\00:46:13.34 Yeah. Yeah. 00:46:13.37\00:46:14.70 How many neighbors don't know about Christ? 00:46:14.74\00:46:17.54 Family members. 00:46:17.61\00:46:18.94 Family members. Yes. 00:46:18.97\00:46:20.31 Yeah, friends. I know that so. 00:47:04.89\00:47:06.22 There're some of them 00:47:06.25\00:47:07.59 that know the Bible better than we do. 00:47:07.66\00:47:09.39 And that's true too. Yeah. 00:47:09.42\00:47:11.26 So you better study 00:47:11.29\00:47:12.63 to show yourself approved of God, 00:47:12.66\00:47:14.20 so you can be a workman who need not be ashamed. 00:47:14.23\00:47:16.97 And who correctly handles the word, 00:47:17.00\00:47:18.73 because when you go in there, they got it down pat. 00:47:18.77\00:47:21.84 Oh, yeah. And they will question you. 00:47:21.87\00:47:23.41 Yes, they do. 00:47:23.44\00:47:24.77 They will ask you questions for sure. 00:47:24.81\00:47:26.81 They're like debris and show me in Word. 00:47:26.88\00:47:29.04 That's right. Amen. 00:48:52.19\00:48:53.53 Yeah. Yeah. 00:48:53.60\00:48:54.93 It was better to give than receive. 00:48:54.96\00:48:56.30 Absolutely. 00:48:56.33\00:48:57.67 It'd be packed down and overflowing. 00:48:57.70\00:48:59.03 What are some of the questions that you guys receive 00:49:03.00\00:49:05.67 when you go into the prisons? 00:49:05.71\00:49:09.48 Well, sometimes you'll have an inmate 00:49:09.51\00:49:11.58 who'll try to get you to call their family. 00:49:11.61\00:49:13.52 Okay. 00:49:13.55\00:49:14.88 Which we're not allowed to do because you volunteer. 00:49:14.92\00:49:17.62 But there's ways of doing that, 00:49:17.65\00:49:19.09 you get someone who's not a volunteer 00:49:19.12\00:49:21.02 to make the phone call, 00:49:21.06\00:49:22.39 because you see, 00:49:22.42\00:49:23.76 there's another outreach right there. 00:49:23.83\00:49:25.39 Every inmate has a family, or wife or children. 00:49:25.43\00:49:30.20 So community service and prison ministry 00:49:30.27\00:49:32.80 go hand in hand, 00:49:32.83\00:49:34.54 because there's needs of the family 00:49:34.57\00:49:36.17 as well as the inmate. 00:49:36.20\00:49:38.24 And I hate to say it 00:49:38.27\00:49:39.61 when someone's doing time, the family is too. 00:49:39.64\00:49:42.31 Absolutely. 00:49:42.34\00:49:43.68 Unpack that a little bit? Yeah. 00:49:43.75\00:49:45.08 Well, right now in South Carolina alone, 00:49:45.11\00:49:49.92 they don't pay inmates anymore, they stopped that years ago. 00:49:49.95\00:49:52.45 Wow! 00:49:52.49\00:49:53.86 I mean, when I was doing time, 00:49:53.89\00:49:55.62 they used to give you $5 00:49:55.66\00:49:57.16 and some change every two weeks. 00:49:57.23\00:49:59.29 So you can buy some soap or shampoo, but now no. 00:49:59.33\00:50:03.13 So the only way that an inmate gets money 00:50:03.16\00:50:06.23 is from individuals like you and I to send them money. 00:50:06.27\00:50:09.30 Wow! 00:50:09.34\00:50:10.71 And the state also does this too. 00:50:10.74\00:50:13.58 They charge them to go see a doctor in there now, 00:50:13.61\00:50:16.54 and they have to pay for their medication. 00:50:16.58\00:50:19.58 They charge them to go to a doctor? 00:50:19.61\00:50:20.95 Yes. Yes. 00:50:20.98\00:50:22.55 But then they don't pay them to work. 00:50:22.58\00:50:24.42 Correct. 00:50:24.45\00:50:25.82 What's wrong with that picture? 00:50:25.85\00:50:27.36 So you, I mean, you could just die in there 00:50:27.39\00:50:29.89 if you can't afford to get it. 00:50:29.92\00:50:31.56 Well, true, but what it is 00:50:31.59\00:50:35.60 they're stacking up a financial bill 00:50:35.63\00:50:38.23 or debt on that inmate 00:50:38.27\00:50:40.07 so when he gets out, 00:50:40.14\00:50:42.37 he's got to pay the medical expense bill 00:50:42.40\00:50:45.47 of being in there. 00:50:45.51\00:50:46.98 And they are trying to say that crime don't pay, 00:50:47.01\00:50:49.51 but you're not teaching them 00:50:49.54\00:50:52.01 that crime don't pay when you're teaching them, 00:50:52.05\00:50:54.98 you're more or less, you hold back not the wages 00:50:55.02\00:50:57.59 of the laborers what the Bible says. 00:50:57.62\00:51:00.16 So you're gonna work somebody and not paying him? 00:51:00.19\00:51:01.69 Yeah. 00:51:01.72\00:51:03.06 That's not a... that's not a good. 00:51:03.09\00:51:04.86 I know they broke the law. 00:51:04.89\00:51:06.33 But again, you're supposed to be rehabilitating, 00:51:06.36\00:51:08.76 not getting them to go backwards. 00:51:08.80\00:51:11.23 Yeah. 00:51:11.27\00:51:12.60 You need to pay someone who works 00:51:12.63\00:51:14.77 and even the Bible says so. 00:51:14.80\00:51:17.31 Our prisons aren't 00:51:17.34\00:51:19.17 near as severe as they are 00:51:19.21\00:51:21.24 in Third World Nations. 00:51:21.28\00:51:23.08 Yeah. Yes. 00:51:23.11\00:51:24.45 In Thailand, it's a pit 00:51:24.48\00:51:27.05 and everything flows to the bottom. 00:51:27.12\00:51:28.95 Wow! 00:51:28.98\00:51:30.32 And the one that committed the worst crime 00:51:30.39\00:51:32.85 is at the bottom. 00:51:32.89\00:51:34.29 Wow! 00:51:34.32\00:51:35.96 In Korea, they got four walls, no roof. 00:51:35.99\00:51:40.80 The cells are on the inside of the wall. 00:51:40.83\00:51:43.37 They're open to the elements. Wow! 00:51:43.40\00:51:45.93 If you get over 00:51:45.97\00:51:47.34 a four year prison term in Korea, 00:51:47.37\00:51:49.44 it's a death penalty. 00:51:49.47\00:51:50.81 Wow! 00:51:50.84\00:51:52.17 Yes.
