00:23:10.69\00:23:12.02 Oh, yes, he was totally abandoned. 00:23:12.05\00:23:13.99 It's just been spectacular to see him blossom 00:23:14.02\00:23:17.33 from an apathetic, malnourished child 00:23:17.36\00:23:22.50 into one that's happy 00:23:22.53\00:23:24.07 and one that loves to be with the other children 00:23:24.10\00:23:26.30 and wants to ride a bicycle 'cause they do. 00:23:26.33\00:23:28.50 And doesn't want his mom out of his sight, 00:23:28.54\00:23:31.61 his house mother, you know, 00:23:31.64\00:23:33.38 will cry if she leaves him, 00:23:33.41\00:23:34.74 so and just loves to play 00:23:34.78\00:23:36.88 with all the other boys and girls. 00:23:36.91\00:23:39.25 So, Jasmin, these children 00:23:39.28\00:23:42.28 are orphaned or abandoned or destitute 00:23:42.32\00:23:46.19 and you know, there are many families 00:23:46.22\00:23:49.12 in all these countries, 00:23:49.16\00:23:50.86 these 21 countries are underdeveloped. 00:23:50.89\00:23:53.29 And there are many families 00:23:53.33\00:23:54.66 that can't even afford to feed their children. 00:23:54.70\00:23:56.06 Yes. 00:23:56.10\00:23:57.43 So you end up with some of those children. 00:23:57.47\00:23:58.80 And if they didn't come there, 00:23:58.83\00:24:00.17 they'd be getting sold into sex slavery. 00:24:00.20\00:24:01.70 Yeah. 00:24:01.74\00:24:03.07 So what is your greatest need right now? 00:24:03.10\00:24:09.24 Our greatest need is sponsors. 00:24:09.28\00:24:11.51 We have so many kids without sponsors, 00:24:11.55\00:24:13.92 like this week, 00:24:13.95\00:24:15.28 I'm getting 30 children from Malawi. 00:24:15.32\00:24:17.19 Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa. 00:24:17.22\00:24:20.06 They have no education. 00:24:20.09\00:24:21.99 They don't value education, I'd say. 00:24:22.02\00:24:24.76 And there's, 00:24:24.79\00:24:27.00 lots of them are starving because of... 00:24:27.03\00:24:31.33 Like one grandmother was taking care of 15 children 00:24:31.37\00:24:34.27 because he had three children. 00:24:34.30\00:24:35.80 All three died of AIDS and their spouses, 00:24:35.84\00:24:38.81 and left all the kids for her to take care of 00:24:38.84\00:24:40.98 and she's telling me these kids don't listen to me, 00:24:41.01\00:24:43.51 the 16 year old got pregnant. 00:24:43.55\00:24:45.75 So now she has 16 kids to take care of. 00:24:45.78\00:24:49.15 So children like that without proper nourishment 00:24:49.18\00:24:53.52 or direction in life. 00:24:53.56\00:24:54.89 Yeah. 00:24:54.92\00:24:56.26 And so we were feeding them. 00:24:56.29\00:24:57.63 We've had a feeding program there 00:24:57.66\00:24:58.99 for a number of years, 00:24:59.03\00:25:00.36 but I felt feeding program is not doing 00:25:00.40\00:25:02.56 what we want to do. 00:25:02.60\00:25:03.93 We say education is salvation. 00:25:03.97\00:25:06.63 So we are doing a school, 00:25:06.67\00:25:09.84 the school is going to start in September. 00:25:09.87\00:25:11.61 Praise God. 00:25:11.64\00:25:12.97 And so they are sending us 00:25:13.01\00:25:14.34 30 children first to begin with, 00:25:14.38\00:25:16.98 to find sponsors for so we can pay the teachers. 00:25:17.01\00:25:20.72 So when you have, when someone sponsors a child, 00:25:20.75\00:25:24.55 what is the cost to sponsor a child 00:25:24.59\00:25:27.46 on a monthly basis? 00:25:27.49\00:25:28.82 It costs $30 a month to sponsor a child. 00:25:28.86\00:25:30.99 Thirty dollars a month, and how many? 00:25:31.03\00:25:34.90 It takes care of their food, their education, their clothes, 00:25:34.93\00:25:38.37 their uniform, housing if they need it, 00:25:38.40\00:25:42.17 medical help for those who are in need. 00:25:42.20\00:25:44.41 Praise God, that's amazing. 00:25:44.44\00:25:45.77 Everything. 00:25:45.81\00:25:47.14 And every penny of that is going there. 00:25:47.18\00:25:49.44 Because once again, 00:25:49.48\00:25:51.18 we just want to emphasize 00:25:51.21\00:25:53.11 that there are no administrative salaries. 00:25:53.15\00:25:55.45 All of, all that is given goes directly to them. 00:25:55.48\00:25:59.49 Because every dollar we spend here 00:25:59.52\00:26:01.39 is food from a child's mouth. 00:26:01.42\00:26:03.12 Yeah, that's right. 00:26:03.16\00:26:04.49 If anybody gives us a donation, 00:26:04.53\00:26:06.43 100% of that donation goes to the cost they give it for. 00:26:06.46\00:26:11.07 Sponsorship, I think 10% goes for administrative expenses, 00:26:11.10\00:26:14.87 like mailing and those printing and those kinds of things. 00:26:14.90\00:26:19.24 But 100% of donations goes to the cause. 00:26:19.27\00:26:22.74 Praise the Lord. That's amazing. 00:26:22.78\00:26:25.41 You are 46 years into this ministry. 00:26:25.45\00:26:30.65 Do you mind if we talk about your age? 00:26:30.69\00:26:33.22 Not at all, praise God. 00:26:33.25\00:26:35.39 How old are you, Jasmin? 00:26:35.42\00:26:36.76 I am 84. 00:26:36.79\00:26:38.13 Eighty four. 00:26:38.16\00:26:41.33 We cannot, we want some of it, 00:26:41.36\00:26:43.57 whatever she's eating and drinking, 00:26:43.60\00:26:45.30 we want some of it. 00:26:45.33\00:26:47.80 I think that's good genes. 00:26:47.84\00:26:49.67 But because you are 84, 00:26:49.70\00:26:53.54 it is time that you're handing the reigns 00:26:53.58\00:26:56.08 over to someone else. 00:26:56.11\00:26:57.45 Because I don't want to die and leave the foundation 00:26:57.48\00:27:00.72 floundering without the founder. 00:27:00.75\00:27:02.88 Yeah. 00:27:02.92\00:27:04.25 So while I'm still alive, 00:27:04.29\00:27:05.62 I want to make sure that it is going, 00:27:05.65\00:27:07.62 getting a good start and going well. 00:27:07.66\00:27:11.23 So, we were looking for somebody 00:27:11.26\00:27:15.26 and we ended up with our kids taking over. 00:27:15.30\00:27:19.57 There's nobody else, it's not a job. 00:27:19.60\00:27:21.67 We can't hire somebody as a job. 00:27:21.70\00:27:23.41 It's not a job. 00:27:23.44\00:27:24.77 It has to be a commitment. Yeah. 00:27:24.81\00:27:26.44 And my daughter and son-in-law, 00:27:26.47\00:27:28.31 they have no children of their own. 00:27:28.34\00:27:30.65 So they have taken REACH. 00:27:30.68\00:27:33.21 And since 2015, 00:27:33.25\00:27:35.42 we moved it from Berrien Springs to Maryland. 00:27:35.45\00:27:38.75 Okay, but when you moved it to Maryland, 00:27:38.79\00:27:40.89 why did you have to make that move? 00:27:40.92\00:27:42.79 Because if we want to 00:27:42.82\00:27:46.13 have Cheryl and Gursen take care of it, 00:27:46.16\00:27:49.10 it had to go there because they are volunteers, 00:27:49.13\00:27:51.47 they are not getting paid. 00:27:51.50\00:27:53.00 And she's a musician. She plays the harp. 00:27:53.03\00:27:55.70 And so she has jobs there. 00:27:55.74\00:27:58.11 Berrien Springs is a village 00:27:58.14\00:27:59.67 and they won't be anybody needing harp play 00:27:59.71\00:28:02.64 for a wedding or for the party of, 00:28:02.68\00:28:04.65 but this is a place that's established, 00:28:04.68\00:28:08.48 she plays for funeral home. 00:28:08.52\00:28:10.49 She plays. She's busy every day. 00:28:10.52\00:28:12.49 So she has work. 00:28:12.52\00:28:14.79 So we had to move REACH to DC 00:28:14.82\00:28:18.56 instead of them coming to do here. 00:28:18.59\00:28:21.16 So is this kind of an interim 00:28:21.20\00:28:22.93 for your daughter and son-in-law 00:28:22.96\00:28:25.33 or are they as passionate about this as you? 00:28:25.37\00:28:28.97 They are, they grew up with it. 00:28:29.00\00:28:30.77 Cheryl feels it's her responsibility. 00:28:30.81\00:28:33.41 And... 00:28:33.44\00:28:34.78 But because they have to work full time. 00:28:34.81\00:28:36.75 Yeah, they don't have the time. 00:28:36.78\00:28:38.11 Are you looking for other administrative help 00:28:38.15\00:28:39.78 to help them? 00:28:39.81\00:28:41.15 Yes, we need help, they need help. 00:28:41.18\00:28:42.52 Okay, so. 00:28:42.55\00:28:43.89 I am doing everything I can from a distance. 00:28:43.92\00:28:45.25 But there's lots of things that can be done from a distance. 00:28:45.29\00:28:49.36 Like, we can use writers to write for the REACH report. 00:28:49.39\00:28:53.60 We need very badly somebody to do video clips. 00:28:53.63\00:28:57.27 We have lots of video for all these years. 00:28:57.30\00:28:59.67 Yeah. 00:28:59.70\00:29:01.04 And we need somebody to put short programs together 00:29:01.07\00:29:03.74 like three minute, four minute programs. 00:29:03.77\00:29:06.11 So we can use it for promotion. 00:29:06.14\00:29:08.54 Promotion has gone down a little bit 00:29:08.58\00:29:11.11 since I gave it over at least. 00:29:11.15\00:29:14.72 Well, and I'm mean 00:29:14.75\00:29:16.38 you were doing this in a full time job there, 00:29:16.42\00:29:18.95 working full time in doing this. 00:29:18.99\00:29:20.32 Yeah, they have been working full time 00:29:20.36\00:29:21.72 and they are young and their ideas are different. 00:29:21.76\00:29:26.26 They are catering to a different audience, I'd say. 00:29:26.29\00:29:31.33 Okay. 00:29:31.37\00:29:32.70 The people I was working with were old people. 00:29:32.73\00:29:37.54 And they have been sponsors for 30-40 years, some of them. 00:29:37.57\00:29:40.54 Yeah. 00:29:40.58\00:29:41.91 And that group is dying off. 00:29:41.94\00:29:44.15 And so nowadays, 00:29:44.18\00:29:45.75 it's more the young people that are sponsoring. 00:29:45.78\00:29:48.45 And so their needs are different. 00:29:48.48\00:29:49.82 Yes. 00:29:49.85\00:29:51.19 So I have to accept that change. 00:29:51.22\00:29:52.82 I am praying God to give me the grace. 00:29:52.85\00:29:55.69 Amen. 00:29:55.72\00:29:57.06 And God will continue the good work. 00:29:57.09\00:29:58.43 Yes, it is His work, without Him we can't do it. 00:29:58.46\00:30:01.00 Amen. Every step of the day. 00:30:01.03\00:30:02.36 You started off as praying child. 00:30:02.40\00:30:04.30 Yes. Now as a praying adult. 00:30:04.33\00:30:05.67 Yeah. You continue to go forward. 00:30:05.70\00:30:07.27 And REACH only goes forward by prayer. 00:30:07.30\00:30:10.01 Many times I have to stop and ask God, 00:30:10.04\00:30:12.34 I need to see that Your hand is here 00:30:12.37\00:30:14.98 in this work, show me. 00:30:15.01\00:30:17.01 Amen. 00:30:17.05\00:30:18.38 And it comes, He comes through. Amen. 00:30:18.41\00:30:19.95 Then I get strength 00:30:19.98\00:30:21.32 and I go for another few months. 00:30:21.35\00:30:22.88 Amen. 00:30:22.92\00:30:24.39 And I guess you're just as energized 00:30:24.42\00:30:26.32 in your own way running the Tanzania facility. 00:30:26.35\00:30:29.22 Is that right? 00:30:29.26\00:30:30.59 I have a vision for what I would like 00:30:30.63\00:30:32.59 to see happen in Tanzania. 00:30:32.63\00:30:35.56 And my vision is that 00:30:35.60\00:30:38.03 these young men and young women are trained there 00:30:38.07\00:30:42.64 to become workers in God's cause. 00:30:42.67\00:30:45.14 Amen. 00:30:45.17\00:30:46.51 With such an army, sorry, 00:30:46.54\00:30:48.84 youth rightly trained might furnish. 00:30:48.88\00:30:50.91 Amen. 00:30:50.95\00:30:52.28 From Education page 271, 00:30:52.31\00:30:54.15 "How soon the message of a crucified, 00:30:54.18\00:30:58.02 risen and soon coming savior 00:30:58.05\00:30:59.79 would be spread to all the world." 00:30:59.82\00:31:01.86 And I believe that our goal there in Tanzania 00:31:01.89\00:31:05.16 is to train them today. 00:31:05.19\00:31:07.96 Not tomorrow, but today. 00:31:08.00\00:31:10.13 So we are teaching these teenage boys and girls 00:31:10.17\00:31:13.44 to teach Sabbath school classes for the little ones. 00:31:13.47\00:31:16.20 Praise God. 00:31:16.24\00:31:17.57 And we are having classes and teaching them how to sew 00:31:17.61\00:31:21.64 and teaching them carpentry. 00:31:21.68\00:31:23.65 They now are doing all of the sewing 00:31:23.68\00:31:25.71 of their own school uniforms. 00:31:25.75\00:31:27.42 They're sewing for the watchman's uniforms, 00:31:27.45\00:31:30.85 for the house mother's uniforms. 00:31:30.89\00:31:32.52 Praise the Lord. 00:31:32.55\00:31:33.89 And... 00:41:21.84\00:41:24.95 When he finished high school, he saw a tent. 00:41:24.98\00:41:29.62 And he went there. 00:41:29.65\00:41:31.55 And he saw people that he knew going in nicely dressed. 00:41:31.59\00:41:35.29 But he didn't want to go because he was in rags. 00:41:35.32\00:41:38.76 He didn't feel he belonged with that group. 00:41:38.79\00:41:40.96 So he stood out, hang around outside. 00:41:41.00\00:41:43.26 His teacher went in and asked him to come. 00:41:43.30\00:41:45.87 And he said, "No, my clothes are not good. 00:41:45.90\00:41:47.67 I can't come." 00:41:47.70\00:41:49.04 He says, "If you attend so many meetings, 00:41:49.07\00:41:50.74 you'll get an English Bible." 00:41:50.77\00:41:52.31 He wanted that Bible, 00:41:52.34\00:41:53.88 but he didn't know how to go in his condition. 00:41:53.91\00:41:57.25 So he says he almost heard the voice telling him 00:41:57.28\00:42:00.12 when it gets dark you can go in. 00:42:00.15\00:42:03.22 So he waited and soon it became dark, 00:42:03.25\00:42:05.32 and they turn the lights off 00:42:05.35\00:42:06.99 because they were showing slides. 00:42:07.02\00:42:09.46 So he went in and sat at the back. 00:42:09.49\00:42:11.86 And he thought that Pastor Crews, 00:42:11.89\00:42:14.00 Joe Crews was speaking directly to him and him only. 00:42:14.03\00:42:18.10 He attended all those meetings. 00:42:18.13\00:42:19.63 And that's how he got baptized. 00:42:19.67\00:42:21.27 And Joe Crews sent him to college. 00:42:21.30\00:42:23.61 And then Joe Crews sponsored him 00:42:23.64\00:42:25.77 to go to Spicer University. 00:42:25.81\00:42:27.38 Spicer for the first year 00:42:27.41\00:42:29.31 and after that he sold books, canvas. 00:42:29.34\00:42:31.85 Praise God, and He studied theology, 00:42:31.88\00:42:34.32 he was a pastor, and you know, 00:42:34.35\00:42:37.09 because, you know, 00:42:37.12\00:42:39.19 it's easy to say you had two children, 00:42:39.22\00:42:41.46 and you had needs as a family. 00:42:41.49\00:42:44.53 But your husband totally supported her 00:42:44.56\00:42:48.40 in these 46 years of her working 00:42:48.43\00:42:50.80 as a full time volunteer for REACH International 00:42:50.83\00:42:53.80 because he knew the difference 00:42:53.84\00:42:56.44 you were making in children's lives. 00:42:56.47\00:42:58.91 I mean, he lived it. 00:42:58.94\00:43:00.28 He lived it so he knows how important it is. 00:43:00.31\00:43:03.14 So he's the brains, I am the brawn. 00:43:03.18\00:43:08.42 I love that. 00:43:08.45\00:43:09.78 He's the brains and you're the brawn? 00:43:09.82\00:43:11.69 Well, I think it's very wise, you don't look your age, 00:43:11.72\00:43:15.29 you don't seem to walk or talk your age. 00:43:15.32\00:43:21.33 But I think it's very wise 00:43:21.36\00:43:22.70 that you were making these moves now to 00:43:22.73\00:43:25.33 so that if anything does happen, 00:43:25.37\00:43:27.97 you will have an uninterrupted continuation. 00:43:28.00\00:43:32.27 Because what will you do with all these kids? 00:43:32.31\00:43:35.31 You can't close the door and to go home, 00:43:35.34\00:43:37.91 they have no place to go. 00:43:37.95\00:43:39.28 Yeah. 00:43:39.31\00:43:40.65 So we have to think 00:43:40.68\00:43:42.02 of the long term needs of these kids. 00:43:42.05\00:43:44.55 Absolutely. 00:43:44.59\00:43:45.92 We try to keep two years operation money saved 00:43:45.95\00:43:50.33 in case something happened. 00:43:50.36\00:43:52.26 At least we have two years too. 00:43:52.29\00:43:54.30 I hope that day never comes. 00:43:54.33\00:43:55.90 Oh, I pray not either. 00:43:55.93\00:43:58.37 Lois, how has it changed you 00:43:58.40\00:44:00.80 in the last three and a half years, 00:44:00.84\00:44:02.87 being involved in this? 00:44:02.90\00:44:04.54 Oh, wow. 00:44:04.57\00:44:06.27 It's like, I had been prepared for it all my life, 00:44:06.31\00:44:11.38 but I'm not prepared for it when it happens. 00:44:11.41\00:44:15.38 And it's been an education in and of itself, 00:44:15.42\00:44:18.55 and a tremendous experience. 00:44:18.59\00:44:20.16 Absolutely tremendous experience. 00:44:20.19\00:44:22.76 Have you found that your faith has been stretched? 00:44:22.79\00:44:26.63 Stretched, and stretched, and stretched. 00:44:26.66\00:44:31.00 I think it's wonderful what you're doing. 00:44:31.03\00:44:32.40 Yeah. 00:44:32.43\00:44:33.77 It's definitely been a challenge. 00:44:33.80\00:44:36.10 Challenges aren't always what you anticipate, 00:44:36.14\00:44:38.44 but they're what you need. 00:44:38.47\00:44:40.34 Amen. Amen. 00:44:40.38\00:44:41.71 Because I think God uses the challenges to grow us. 00:44:41.74\00:44:45.18 What would be a typical day? 00:44:45.21\00:44:47.98 Well, a typical day would be a school day 00:44:48.02\00:44:50.09 since the children go to school. 00:44:50.12\00:44:51.79 They get up in the morning, they have Uji for breakfast. 00:44:51.82\00:44:55.22 What? 00:44:55.26\00:44:56.59 Uji, It's a porridge and it's millet porridge. 00:44:56.62\00:44:59.79 Okay. 00:44:59.83\00:45:01.16 And they go to school, 00:45:01.20\00:45:03.53 they have their worships at school, 00:45:03.57\00:45:05.23 they have their classes and at noon, 00:45:05.27\00:45:07.44 they're right close, 00:45:07.47\00:45:08.80 so they go back to the orphanage 00:45:08.84\00:45:10.17 for their lunch. 00:45:10.21\00:45:11.54 Okay. 00:45:11.57\00:45:12.91 And they might have Ugali and beans, 00:45:12.94\00:45:14.28 or rice and beans or something else. 00:45:14.31\00:45:16.51 But they have their lunch. 00:45:16.54\00:45:19.05 And then after lunch, 00:45:19.08\00:45:20.72 they go back to school for classes, 00:45:20.75\00:45:22.32 like children do. 00:45:22.35\00:45:24.62 And then there's a time that they have scheduled for, 00:45:24.65\00:45:27.96 like soccer and fun time 00:45:27.99\00:45:29.49 and swinging time, and all of that. 00:45:29.52\00:45:31.23 And then there's a time scheduled for them 00:45:31.26\00:45:32.83 to learn to work in the garden 00:45:32.86\00:45:34.80 and help carry some of the responsibilities. 00:45:34.83\00:45:37.60 They also help with the laundry. 00:45:37.63\00:45:39.53 And as I mentioned, with the sewing, 00:45:39.57\00:45:41.54 and with other needs with crops. 00:45:41.57\00:45:43.91 So, they're learning how to work 00:45:43.94\00:45:46.68 at the same time that they're being educated. 00:45:46.71\00:45:48.64 Yes.
