I want to spend my life 00:00:01.63\00:00:06.67 Mending broken people 00:00:07.50\00:00:12.31 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.41\00:00:18.01 Removing pain 00:00:18.85\00:00:23.22 Lord, let my words 00:00:23.85\00:00:28.79 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:29.89\00:00:33.90 I want to spend my life 00:00:34.50\00:00:39.50 Mending broken people 00:00:40.24\00:00:44.81 I want to spend my life 00:00:45.74\00:00:50.95 Mending broken people 00:00:51.35\00:00:56.08 - Hello, friends! Welcome to 3ABN Today. My name 00:01:10.57\00:01:12.87 is John Lomacang; but if you're a part of our 00:01:12.93\00:01:14.74 family, you already know that. Want to thank you 00:01:14.84\00:01:18.24 for your prayers and financial support of this 00:01:18.34\00:01:20.14 network as we continue going and growing, getting 00:01:20.24\00:01:22.81 ready for the coming of our Lord. Today is a 00:01:22.88\00:01:25.28 particularly interesting program. You've heard 00:01:25.38\00:01:28.92 about missions; and when we talk about missions, 00:01:29.02\00:01:31.29 we often think about the Philippines, the islands, 00:01:31.35\00:01:34.42 someplace in Europe, someplace in Africa, 00:01:34.52\00:01:36.62 someplace in the Middle East...but what about 00:01:36.73\00:01:39.39 missions here in America? And today's program is 00:01:39.49\00:01:42.86 going to take you to a particular location in 00:01:42.96\00:01:44.83 America where, maybe for whatever unknown reason, 00:01:44.93\00:01:47.94 missions have almost been completely overlooked in 00:01:48.00\00:01:51.71 a very particular people group in our nation, and 00:01:51.81\00:01:55.04 we're going to highlight that today with our guest. 00:01:55.14\00:01:56.68 So hit the record button right now, I would encourage 00:01:56.75\00:02:00.68 you, because I know that you might be challenged 00:02:00.75\00:02:03.35 to participate in some way in getting the gospel 00:02:03.45\00:02:06.42 not just to the world, but right here in the 00:02:06.52\00:02:09.19 United States of America! I have with me today a 00:02:09.26\00:02:12.76 very good friend of mine. I want to introduce him 00:02:12.83\00:02:14.46 right now: Dr. Leon Brown, good to have you here. 00:02:14.53\00:02:17.87 We were pastors in the Northern California Conference 00:02:19.23\00:02:21.50 together. - Yeah, we were. Yeah. - You pastor the church 00:02:21.60\00:02:23.64 I pastored, we were in ministry together, and you are now 00:02:23.71\00:02:27.38 the president of the Nevada-Utah Conference. - Yes. - Good to 00:02:27.44\00:02:30.65 have you here today. - Great to be here, John. - Yeah. 00:02:30.71\00:02:32.71 So, I always appreciate your ministry and your 00:02:32.81\00:02:34.55 family, your wife and all your children, so it's good 00:02:34.65\00:02:38.82 to see that God is prospering you in that beautiful snow-free- 00:02:38.89\00:02:42.79 [laughter] pretty much snow-free region of the 00:02:42.89\00:02:45.86 world. - Well, not in Reno, but for the most part in... 00:02:45.96\00:02:49.00 in the other parts. Well, we got Salt Lake City, too, 00:02:51.30\00:02:53.44 so there's a lot of snow in Salt Lake City, so... 00:02:53.54\00:02:54.90 - Oh, that's true; that's true. But are you enjoying 00:02:55.00\00:02:57.67 the weather there? - I love it. I love Nevada-Utah. 00:02:57.77\00:02:59.97 It's the most amazing place. I tell them it's 00:03:00.04\00:03:01.54 the greatest hidden secret in the work in North America, 00:03:01.64\00:03:04.48 so I just love it. - And then you have access to 00:03:04.58\00:03:06.48 the canyons and all the beautiful red rocks, and 00:03:06.55\00:03:10.12 Monument Valley? - Yes; yes. Monument Valley- 00:03:10.22\00:03:12.49 and then that's why we're here today. Monument Valley, 00:03:12.55\00:03:14.06 we've got all of Utah, which is some of the most 00:03:14.12\00:03:16.19 beautiful places I've seen... And so it's great. It's great 00:03:16.26\00:03:19.69 to be here. - And to your immediate right 00:03:19.76\00:03:21.90 is Nancy Crosby. Good to have you here, Nancy. 00:03:21.96\00:03:24.23 - Thank you. - You've been here before, haven't you? 00:03:24.33\00:03:26.50 - Yes. - And we're glad to have you back. - Thank 00:03:26.60\00:03:28.60 you. - And just for our viewers and listeners, 00:03:28.70\00:03:31.81 tell us briefly, in a nutshell, what you do and where 00:03:31.94\00:03:34.34 you're from. - So, I'm from Page, Arizona, and 00:03:34.44\00:03:37.15 I'm the Native Ministries coordinator for the Pacific 00:03:37.28\00:03:39.45 Union. So, the focus is on Native Ministries, but today 00:03:39.51\00:03:43.52 we want to focus in on the Navajo Nation within 00:03:44.35\00:03:48.49 the Pacific Union. - Okay. Good to have you here 00:03:48.59\00:03:51.09 again. - Thank you. - And to your immediate right, 00:03:51.16\00:03:53.09 I think a first-timer here on our set, is Pastor James 00:03:53.16\00:03:57.00 Crosby. Am I correct to assume that is your husband? 00:03:57.10\00:04:00.44 - Yes. - Okay. Good to have you here, Pastor. 00:04:00.54\00:04:02.57 - Thank you. It's good to be here. - Now, I've already 00:04:02.67\00:04:04.14 told the viewers and listeners you're a pastor, but give 00:04:04.21\00:04:05.97 us a little bit more in a nutshell of what you do 00:04:06.07\00:04:08.24 and kind of your influence and reference to this program 00:04:08.34\00:04:10.75 today. - Okay. I've been a pastor in Page, Arizona 00:04:10.81\00:04:14.38 for over four years now. That was my first experience 00:04:14.48\00:04:19.79 working with Navajos; and of course, Page is what we 00:04:19.85\00:04:23.63 call a border town on the edge of the Navajo Nation. 00:04:23.69\00:04:27.50 And here just this year, we've added the Kayenta 00:04:27.60\00:04:31.00 church to my district, which is more in the heart 00:04:31.10\00:04:33.30 of the Navajo Nation. - Mhm. And so, we're going to talk 00:04:33.40\00:04:37.77 about that in more detail during the program. So, 00:04:37.84\00:04:41.14 you do want to stay tuned to hear more about how the 00:04:41.21\00:04:43.41 work is going, how it is needing a boost, how it's 00:04:43.48\00:04:48.45 restarting, and how the Lord is going to reach, 00:04:48.52\00:04:50.99 because the Bible guarantees the gospel of the Kingdom 00:04:51.09\00:04:53.82 will be preached in all the world. That does 00:04:53.89\00:04:56.16 not exclude the Navajo Nation. I think it's a 00:04:56.26\00:04:58.66 perfect setup for the song that we have here today. 00:04:58.76\00:05:00.93 Scott Michael Bennett... It's a song called, "Go 00:05:01.03\00:05:03.77 Light Your World." That's the intent of this program 00:05:03.83\00:05:07.07 today: to light the world- even among the Navajo 00:05:07.14\00:05:09.80 Nation. Enjoy this song as we prepare for the program. 00:05:09.90\00:05:12.84 There is a candle in every soul 00:05:22.28\00:05:28.36 Some brightly burning, but some dark and cold 00:05:30.33\00:05:35.93 There is a Spirit Who brings the fire 00:05:37.93\00:05:44.67 Ignites the candle and makes His home 00:05:46.11\00:05:52.18 So carry your candle; run to the darkness 00:05:53.62\00:06:00.26 Seek out the hopeless, confused, and torn 00:06:01.66\00:06:07.86 And hold out your candle for all to see it 00:06:09.43\00:06:16.00 Oh, take your candle and go light your world 00:06:16.40\00:06:24.71 Take your candle, and go light your world 00:06:25.38\00:06:31.79 Frustrated brother, see how he's tried to 00:06:37.16\00:06:43.63 Light his own candle some other way 00:06:44.90\00:06:50.61 See now your sister, she's been robbed and lied to 00:06:52.37\00:06:59.28 She still holds a candle without a flame 00:07:00.15\00:07:07.69 So carry your candle; run to the darkness 00:07:07.86\00:07:14.56 And seek out the lonely, the tired and worn 00:07:15.63\00:07:23.41 Hold out your candle for all to see it 00:07:23.51\00:07:30.35 Take your candle, and go light your world 00:07:31.28\00:07:38.55 Take your candle and go light your world 00:07:38.79\00:07:45.76 We are a family whose hearts are blazing 00:07:50.10\00:07:56.64 So let's raise our candles and light up the sky 00:07:57.74\00:08:03.65 Praying to our Father in the name of Jesus 00:08:05.31\00:08:12.92 Make us a beacon in the darkest night 00:08:13.66\00:08:21.50 Carry your candle; run to the darkness 00:08:21.63\00:08:28.10 Seek out the helpless, deceived, and poor 00:08:29.07\00:08:36.68 Hold out your candle for all to see it 00:08:36.95\00:08:43.39 Oh, take your candle, and go light your world 00:08:43.85\00:08:51.89 Take your candle; go light your world 00:08:52.33\00:09:00.84 Take your candle and go light your world 00:09:02.14\00:09:11.51 Go light your world 00:09:13.95\00:09:19.35 Go light your world 00:09:21.92\00:09:30.07 - Thank you so much, Scott. What an appropriate song 00:09:34.00\00:09:37.01 for this program. You know, the light of the 00:09:37.11\00:09:39.37 gospel is to not just light your neighborhood or your 00:09:39.44\00:09:43.41 community, but to light the world...but there is 00:09:43.51\00:09:46.15 a silent and sometimes almost invisible world 00:09:46.25\00:09:49.22 right in our backyard- right in our front door. 00:09:50.15\00:09:52.39 And we can inadvertently sometimes forget that 00:09:52.49\00:09:56.26 they're there. It could be your neighbor, it could 00:09:56.86\00:09:58.96 be your friend, people that you work with... 00:09:59.09\00:10:00.53 or it could be a people that are disenfranchised, 00:10:00.63\00:10:03.87 disconnected from the normal rounds of life, 00:10:03.97\00:10:06.63 and we just think that maybe they don't matter. 00:10:06.77\00:10:08.80 Today, our guests are shining the spotlight, 00:10:08.90\00:10:12.47 as it were, lighting the world of the Navajo Nation, 00:10:12.57\00:10:15.31 because they are also a people. And if you think 00:10:15.38\00:10:18.18 about the history of America, they were here before the 00:10:18.25\00:10:20.85 Pilgrims were out here. So, this really, in fact, 00:10:20.95\00:10:23.25 is their world from coast to coast, north to south, 00:10:23.35\00:10:26.12 east, and west. And so God is calling the Nevada- 00:10:26.22\00:10:29.62 Utah Conference under the direction of Dr. Leon Brown 00:10:29.72\00:10:33.40 to push and reignite the passion for getting 00:10:33.50\00:10:38.73 the gospel among the Navajo Nation-and I want to thank 00:10:38.83\00:10:41.80 the Crosbys for being here today. But Pastor 00:10:41.90\00:10:44.17 Brown, begin; kind of give us-and each one 00:10:44.24\00:10:46.34 of you can contribute to that-give us some 00:10:46.41\00:10:47.74 of the history of the ministry to the Navajo 00:10:47.81\00:10:51.18 Nation. How far back does it go? And maybe, who were 00:10:51.28\00:10:54.92 some of the pioneers in this work? - Yeah. Well, 00:10:55.02\00:10:57.65 we have... When we started this work, we looked back, 00:10:57.75\00:11:01.86 and it was about... 1940, 1950s is when we realized 00:11:01.96\00:11:06.19 the work began, and it all began through a couple, 00:11:06.29\00:11:09.50 a family-the Walters family. In fact, well, 00:11:09.63\00:11:12.07 brother Walters, Pastor Walters is retired- is a 00:11:12.17\00:11:15.04 former pastor of ours, and now he's retired. 00:11:15.14\00:11:17.04 But his dad actually started the work on the reservation, 00:11:17.14\00:11:20.41 and he started by starting Holbrook School on another 00:11:20.54\00:11:24.38 reservation. And then he moved from that to the 00:11:24.48\00:11:26.65 Monument Valley area where they began to work there. 00:11:26.75\00:11:30.45 Then Loma Linda came out; Loma Linda started a hospital. 00:11:30.59\00:11:34.32 So, we had a hospital and a clinic there. And in those 00:11:34.46\00:11:36.83 days, the need was important. There was no hospital, there 00:11:36.96\00:11:39.79 was no school, so we had a school out there. But 00:11:39.86\00:11:41.76 as time progressed, the Navajo tribe themselves 00:11:41.86\00:11:45.73 created schools and began to create clinics and hospitals. 00:11:45.80\00:11:49.40 So, the need has changed. And so what we're doing 00:11:49.50\00:11:52.81 right now is we're now beginning to refocus the 00:11:52.87\00:11:55.61 mission from what it was to what is should be in 00:11:55.71\00:12:00.98 this era. So, that's kind of where we are right now. 00:12:01.08\00:12:03.85 We've seen the past, we've seen how successful it was, 00:12:03.95\00:12:07.32 but the hospital closed back in, what, 1996, 00:12:07.39\00:12:11.03 and now we're having to move and transition to a 00:12:11.13\00:12:14.20 better, more effective ministry to the Navajo 00:12:14.30\00:12:16.67 people. - Okay. Anything else, Nancy, on that? 00:12:16.77\00:12:19.17 - Well, I would just like to say that the needs were 00:12:19.27\00:12:21.70 so great. When the Walters family came, they just had 00:12:21.84\00:12:25.04 a station wagon. They were working out of the back of 00:12:25.11\00:12:26.88 a station wagon. There were no paved roads. 00:12:26.98\00:12:29.28 But still today, we find that there are hardly 00:12:29.34\00:12:32.11 any paved roads. Over 1/3 of the Navajo Nation 00:12:32.21\00:12:36.35 does not have electricity or plumbing in their homes. 00:12:36.45\00:12:39.52 No running water, no electricity! And so, 00:12:39.59\00:12:42.66 what we see is a nation- and I think we may have a 00:12:42.76\00:12:45.73 slide for this that shows the size of the Navajo 00:12:45.83\00:12:48.76 Nation... - Yeah, let's look at that slide. 00:12:48.86\00:12:50.37 - And it's the size of Vermont, New Hampshire, 00:12:50.47\00:12:55.14 and Massachusetts all combined. - Hm. - And 00:12:55.24\00:12:57.94 yet, as you look at that space of the size of three 00:12:58.07\00:13:01.81 states, there's only 13 grocery stores. - Wow. 00:13:01.88\00:13:07.08 - Just 13 grocery stores, so we have a very high 00:13:07.72\00:13:10.82 rate of food insecurity. We have a town- for 00:13:10.89\00:13:14.72 example: Reno, Nevada. They have 60 grocery 00:13:14.82\00:13:18.73 stores in Reno. - Just in Reno. - Just that city of Reno! 00:13:18.83\00:13:22.36 [simultaneous chatter] Exactly. And then we 00:13:22.46\00:13:25.73 have this area, the size of three states, that 00:13:25.87\00:13:28.64 only has 13 grocery stores, and we still have many 00:13:28.77\00:13:32.37 dirt roads-so very difficult for people. Some can't 00:13:32.47\00:13:35.94 drive to get to food. So, one of the things 00:13:36.08\00:13:39.55 that we have in Page is we've started a community 00:13:39.65\00:13:44.45 garden, a greenhouse and a garden, which 00:13:44.55\00:13:47.59 is something that we're hoping to also move into 00:13:47.72\00:13:50.23 on the Kayenta mission site, as well, to help 00:13:50.33\00:13:53.19 people have that fresh produce locally. - Hm. 00:13:53.29\00:13:56.43 - Because we have a rate of 18-20% of diabetes on 00:13:56.53\00:14:00.07 the Navajo Nation, as well. - Wow. So not 00:14:00.24\00:14:02.94 only are there food insecurities but when it comes to health 00:14:03.00\00:14:07.04 and understanding health and what to eat and what 00:14:07.11\00:14:09.24 not to eat, that also is a challenge so that people 00:14:09.34\00:14:11.75 can be in their traditional practices-or even, maybe, 00:14:11.85\00:14:15.05 what's available to them. They're just an unhealthy 00:14:15.15\00:14:17.45 people. And not just spiritually, but also 00:14:17.55\00:14:19.45 sometimes physically. - You can understand, 00:14:19.52\00:14:21.36 too: this is actually a nation, so this is 00:14:21.46\00:14:22.96 the other part where we sometimes when we- 00:14:23.02\00:14:24.36 ...When I first got here, the thing I didn't realize 00:14:24.43\00:14:25.96 is this is an actual nation state within the United 00:14:26.06\00:14:28.70 States. They've got their own capital in Window Rock. 00:14:28.80\00:14:31.03 So when you work with them, the Navajo people, 00:14:31.10\00:14:33.17 you can't just walk in and say, "We're going 00:14:34.40\00:14:36.47 to do whatever we want." We've gotta go through 00:14:36.57\00:14:38.01 the government. - Through the government. - Yeah, 00:14:38.11\00:14:39.51 actual government, and so we've got to go to... 00:14:39.64\00:14:41.38 Whenever we need to work, we work with the government 00:14:41.51\00:14:43.71 in Window Rock. - A nation within a nation. - It is a 00:14:43.78\00:14:46.45 nation within a nation. - Exactly. - Wow, wow. 00:14:46.55\00:14:48.62 - Yeah. It's as large as we have- and we need 00:14:48.68\00:14:51.79 to spend more time focusing on this. We do mission work 00:14:51.89\00:14:54.62 around the globe, and we've got this mission 00:14:54.72\00:14:56.69 right in the middle of the United States, covering 00:14:56.76\00:14:58.96 all of these different states (and unions 00:14:59.06\00:15:00.53 for the church), and we've got to begin to focus in 00:15:00.63\00:15:02.90 on that. - Wow; wow. - With third world country 00:15:03.00\00:15:05.73 living conditions, seriously... And because of, like you 00:15:05.83\00:15:12.17 mentioned, those health challenges, spiritual 00:15:12.24\00:15:14.64 challenges, abuse is very high. - Yeah. - On the 00:15:14.74\00:15:19.98 Navajo Nation, we have 5 children, John, every 00:15:20.05\00:15:23.28 day that die from abuse or neglect. If that happened 00:15:23.39\00:15:28.16 in any one, say, city or something, we would be 00:15:28.26\00:15:32.13 scrambling to find the solutions; and yet, as 00:15:32.23\00:15:35.00 you've mentioned, it's kind of a forgotten people- 00:15:35.06\00:15:38.27 a neglected, forgotten group. - So, we have a lot to do 00:15:38.37\00:15:43.27 when it comes to refocusing. - Yes. - Sometimes we're 00:15:43.37\00:15:46.51 looking across the borders- I'm gonna use that phrase- 00:15:46.57\00:15:49.11 to wonder how we could protect our nation, but 00:15:49.18\00:15:52.15 then we have a nation in a nation. I'm glad you 00:15:52.21\00:15:53.78 mentioned that, 'cause it's not just a people; 00:15:53.85\00:15:56.05 it's a nation: their own government, their own 00:15:56.12\00:15:59.79 establishment. You have to walk through a government 00:15:59.89\00:16:02.59 to get involved; you just 00:16:02.69\00:16:04.03 don't show up without any kind of prior 00:16:04.06\00:16:06.46 invitation. I gotta pass this to Pastor Crosby 00:16:06.56\00:16:11.30 there, because now... What are some of the 00:16:11.43\00:16:14.27 challenges you find because you're working with the 00:16:14.34\00:16:17.44 Nevada-Utah Conference? And also, what other 00:16:17.54\00:16:20.31 conference? You had put in two conferences- 00:16:20.41\00:16:22.44 - The Arizona Conference. - Arizona Conference. 00:16:22.51\00:16:23.85 Because the territories are... overlinked, synonymous, 00:16:23.88\00:16:27.82 so vast. Beautiful country, but what are some of the 00:16:27.92\00:16:30.25 challenges you find as you work with the Navajo 00:16:30.32\00:16:34.12 Nation? - Well, one of the things I've seen a 00:16:34.22\00:16:40.70 lot with people I've worked with, the spiritual battle is 00:16:40.80\00:16:44.60 very real for them. And I think in our American, 00:16:44.70\00:16:49.87 our industrial culture, whatever you want to 00:16:50.01\00:16:53.27 call it, we forget that- and there are some of 00:16:53.41\00:16:57.55 them that forget that, as well. But many of them- 00:16:57.65\00:16:59.61 it's very real. People that have come by, 00:16:59.71\00:17:02.45 just wanting prayer... There was a lady that 00:17:02.55\00:17:06.25 came just a few weeks ago to the church, and 00:17:06.35\00:17:10.73 she just wanted prayer, and she's telling me about 00:17:10.83\00:17:12.36 the other places she went to, seeking help. And she's 00:17:12.46\00:17:16.23 telling me, "They don't understand." You know, 00:17:16.30\00:17:18.53 when she tells about the spiritual struggle she's 00:17:18.63\00:17:20.47 going through, it's like, "They're willing to help 00:17:20.57\00:17:22.57 with this and that, but they can't pray like you 00:17:22.67\00:17:25.04 can." That was actually the second time she had 00:17:25.11\00:17:28.98 been there; it's like, a year before, she had 00:17:29.08\00:17:30.98 stopped by. But I've met so many people like that, 00:17:31.08\00:17:33.75 people struggling with spiritual battles, demon 00:17:33.85\00:17:38.39 harassment, and even demon possession. These 00:17:38.49\00:17:41.56 things are real for them out on the reservation. 00:17:41.66\00:17:44.19 - So their cultural practices also could be a hindrance 00:17:44.26\00:17:47.80 to, now, you take them from their traditions that 00:17:47.86\00:17:50.93 probably go back a long way. - Yes. - Easily, 00:17:51.03\00:17:54.90 centuries. You take them from their traditions, and 00:17:54.97\00:17:57.84 then you merge the gospel with the traditions. So you're 00:17:57.94\00:18:02.14 dealing with things like the demon possession, 00:18:02.18\00:18:03.85 whatever other practices... How do you find that bridge? 00:18:05.15\00:18:08.98 I mean, what effective ways are you able to 00:18:09.05\00:18:12.19 cross over that, if I can use, chasm and get the 00:18:12.25\00:18:16.56 gospel to people that are so traditionally steeped 00:18:16.62\00:18:19.19 in some areas? - Wow, that's... Yeah, for me, 00:18:19.23\00:18:24.57 I've spent a lot of time praying with people, 00:18:24.70\00:18:26.47 encouraging them. And when you talk about 00:18:27.57\00:18:30.11 tradition and... It's amazing how easily 00:18:30.17\00:18:35.51 they accept the bad things that white people bring to 00:18:35.54\00:18:39.35 them and how hard it is for them to accept the good 00:18:39.41\00:18:43.42 that we try to bring to them. But consistency, 00:18:44.39\00:18:49.79 always there, making an effort...it seems to take 00:18:49.92\00:18:53.60 time to establish some trust there before they're 00:18:53.70\00:18:57.37 willing to really accept anything that would actually 00:18:57.47\00:18:59.47 make a change in their life. - Okay. You're talking 00:18:59.57\00:19:02.44 about transitioning... - Let me add something- 00:19:02.50\00:19:04.27 and Pastor just said something I think that's 00:19:04.37\00:19:06.44 important. With the Navajo Nation, there are two things 00:19:06.51\00:19:08.41 that we identified. I saw: #1) it's hard for 00:19:08.48\00:19:13.45 the Navajo culture to just trust. And a lot 00:19:13.52\00:19:16.45 of times, we go in and we go out, and it's a 00:19:16.55\00:19:21.06 matter of us... We set up a ministry, and we're 00:19:21.12\00:19:23.69 in for a few minutes, and we're out. With Navajo 00:19:23.79\00:19:25.69 culture, it takes a little longer for them to actually 00:19:25.79\00:19:27.56 trust you. You've gotta be there for years for 00:19:27.66\00:19:30.40 the people to actually believe that you really 00:19:30.47\00:19:33.90 care and you're concerned about them; and that's 00:19:34.00\00:19:35.84 one of the things we're thinking about now as we 00:19:35.94\00:19:37.51 look towards the future. We need people who are 00:19:37.57\00:19:39.34 going to be on the res and they're going to be 00:19:39.41\00:19:41.94 there for not a year or two years, but there 00:19:42.01\00:19:44.48 for a longer period of time, because that's 00:19:44.55\00:19:46.41 what they need. The other thing that we need is the 00:19:46.51\00:19:50.15 fact that we don't want to just give them ministry 00:19:50.22\00:19:55.39 that is unsuccessful; we're committed to 00:19:55.49\00:19:57.89 doing ministry that is powerful, ministry that 00:19:57.96\00:20:00.73 is appropriate, ministry that is effective-and not 00:20:00.83\00:20:04.83 just give... We want to give them our very best, 00:20:04.93\00:20:06.27 basically, is what we want to do, and that's 00:20:06.37\00:20:07.84 the kind of thing that we're focused on right 00:20:07.94\00:20:09.94 now, and that's why we're here!-to tell the world 00:20:10.01\00:20:11.61 that from now on as we go into the ministry. That's 00:20:11.71\00:20:13.84 what they did in the beginning, and going 00:20:13.91\00:20:15.31 forward, that's what we want to do: we want to 00:20:15.41\00:20:16.78 give our very best to the Navajo families that 00:20:16.88\00:20:19.41 are there. - So it takes a long-term time to build 00:20:19.55\00:20:21.28 that relationship; they want to know that this 00:20:21.38\00:20:22.72 is not a program, but a relationship first. 00:20:22.78\00:20:25.59 - Yes. - Okay, that's really where relationship evangelism 00:20:25.69\00:20:27.99 comes in. - And that's why I'm so grateful 00:20:28.12\00:20:29.82 for this couple, because they're committed to the 00:20:29.92\00:20:32.26 work of God. They are hard workers; and I 00:20:32.36\00:20:37.07 love them, because it takes a unique personality 00:20:37.17\00:20:40.07 and character to be able to go out, live in a reservation, 00:20:40.17\00:20:42.90 and to actually care about the people that are there. 00:20:43.00\00:20:45.07 - Mhm. Nancy? - And I think one of the challenges 00:20:45.17\00:20:48.04 that we initially have found is we come to 00:20:48.14\00:20:53.18 pastor a church or a mission, and all of a sudden we realize, 00:20:53.28\00:20:56.79 "We're in another country!" Really; literally. So, that's 00:20:57.69\00:21:01.16 something that we have had to wade through, and so 00:21:01.22\00:21:04.03 you come in and you have your ideas of the typical 00:21:04.13\00:21:06.53 way you're going to reach out. We didn't realize that 00:21:06.59\00:21:09.86 at midnight at our door would be people knocking 00:21:10.90\00:21:14.57 that are demon-harassed, that need prayer. And last 00:21:14.64\00:21:19.14 summer, an exciting thing happened. We had our 00:21:19.21\00:21:21.74 plans, but parents started saying to us, "Our children 00:21:21.84\00:21:26.58 have nothing to do in the summer because 00:21:26.65\00:21:28.35 there's no school. And what are they going to 00:21:28.42\00:21:31.05 eat?" Because they don't have the free lunch programs 00:21:31.12\00:21:33.86 in the school, and the schools send backpacks home for the 00:21:33.99\00:21:36.56 weekend so those children have food to eat, or they 00:21:36.66\00:21:38.96 will not eat. And so, parents are saying, 00:21:39.06\00:21:41.80 "Our kids have nothing to do in the summer. 00:21:42.90\00:21:44.77 We need something for our children." So we said- 00:21:45.63\00:21:47.40 we literally had weeks, and we said, "We're going 00:21:48.07\00:21:51.81 to do a day camp. We're going to have a day camp 00:21:51.91\00:21:53.78 from 8 to 4:30, Monday through Thursday, for 00:21:53.84\00:21:57.65 these children so they have a place to be that's 00:21:57.75\00:22:00.32 safe and they're learning." And this summer, second 00:22:00.38\00:22:05.25 year in, we have a waiting list of children. We did not 00:22:05.39\00:22:09.86 even have enough people to help us. It's just amazing. 00:22:09.96\00:22:15.93 We had three children homeless, and the mom 00:22:16.03\00:22:19.47 said, "I need a job. And if I go and get a job, 00:22:19.53\00:22:22.17 my kids will just be on the street all day because 00:22:22.27\00:22:24.47 I don't have a home for them to be, and I need 00:22:24.54\00:22:26.34 this day camp for my children." Do you know 00:22:26.44\00:22:29.31 that last week-and this just makes me tear up- 00:22:29.41\00:22:32.91 because the mom said, she said, "What time are 00:22:32.98\00:22:38.69 your services at your church?" And in my heart for the last 00:22:38.79\00:22:42.56 few years, I've always known that the way that God was 00:22:42.62\00:22:46.80 calling us to reach these people is through their 00:22:46.90\00:22:50.37 children. And we're seeing it happen right before 00:22:50.43\00:22:53.97 our eyes! And these children, they go, they have fun, 00:22:54.04\00:22:57.01 we do some literacy things to keep them updated with 00:22:57.11\00:23:00.01 their school and things, but we go out and have 00:23:00.11\00:23:02.11 fun! We go take them swimming, we take them on field trips, 00:23:02.18\00:23:04.38 we take them out into the garden and teach 00:23:05.95\00:23:08.08 them how to garden, and they pick their food and 00:23:08.18\00:23:10.32 bring it in, and then we show them how to make 00:23:10.45\00:23:12.15 food so they can do it at home. So, it's just 00:23:12.25\00:23:15.62 very exciting to see how God is working through the 00:23:15.72\00:23:19.36 gardening and with the children, because we 00:23:19.46\00:23:22.13 have an epidemic on the Navajo Nation. I don't 00:23:22.20\00:23:26.33 know the exact statistics as far as alcoholism, but 00:23:26.43\00:23:30.04 it's very high. We're talking 50-60%. It's 00:23:30.14\00:23:34.24 very, very high; and if we can just prevent these 00:23:34.34\00:23:37.25 precious children of getting into those bad habits, that's 00:23:37.35\00:23:41.85 where we'll have the chance to change these people. 00:23:41.95\00:23:44.22 - Wow. You know, you talked about the 13 00:23:44.29\00:23:46.22 grocery stores. I wonder how many of them carry 00:23:46.32\00:23:48.86 alcohol. - Well, the irony of it is that the reservation 00:23:49.02\00:23:53.16 is dry. You're not supposed to sell alcohol at all, but 00:23:53.23\00:23:56.36 somehow, alcohol gets into the res, and that's a whole 00:23:56.46\00:24:01.20 'nother story. - Do they have casinos out there? 00:24:01.30\00:24:03.87 I don't know if that's been the case. - Navajo 00:24:03.94\00:24:05.74 Nation does have a few, but it's very, very- 00:24:05.84\00:24:09.01 it's not like other tribes. - Okay. - That is not a common- 00:24:09.08\00:24:13.11 - Not close to where we're at, no. So they have one 00:24:13.21\00:24:15.68 down by Flagstaff, a pretty good size one, but it's a 00:24:15.78\00:24:19.05 good ways from where we're at. - So you have 00:24:19.15\00:24:21.42 this valley, and I'm going to use the phrase, 00:24:21.52\00:24:22.86 "Monument Valley." My mind is just picturing this 00:24:22.92\00:24:26.13 vast openness where when you wake up in the morning- 00:24:26.23\00:24:30.37 there was a picture we had on the facility that- 00:24:30.43\00:24:32.43 where is that facility located? - That facility 00:24:32.53\00:24:35.60 is actually located in Kayenta. That is our 00:24:35.70\00:24:38.81 current mission headquarters with Nevada-Utah-yes?- 00:24:38.87\00:24:43.95 and yes, you can see the vast open. - Yeah. - So, 00:24:44.65\00:24:48.88 let me kind of transition us. In the last couple of 00:24:48.98\00:24:53.05 years, what we've done is we've transitioned away 00:24:53.12\00:24:56.39 from the Monument Valley to Kayenta, and there are 00:24:56.49\00:25:01.23 reasons that that occurred. As we began to... Our 00:25:01.33\00:25:05.90 executive committee- and I praise God for our 00:25:06.00\00:25:07.94 executive committee and our leadership team-we 00:25:08.04\00:25:10.17 spent countless dollars and hours and union in Monument 00:25:10.27\00:25:14.04 Valley, trying to reignite, as it were, the mission 00:25:14.14\00:25:17.81 that was there when the Walters were there. - Hm. 00:25:17.91\00:25:20.28 - And every-this is the most amazing-everything 00:25:20.98\00:25:23.62 that we did almost seemed as if it didn't work out. We 00:25:23.72\00:25:27.22 prayed, we fasted, we did everything we could. - Doors 00:25:27.32\00:25:29.32 would shut in our faces. - Yep. The church flooded 00:25:29.39\00:25:31.23 twice last, in the middle of the desert, the church 00:25:31.33\00:25:34.46 flooded twice. And so we literally had to close 00:25:34.56\00:25:38.03 the door of the church because it became unsafe. 00:25:38.13\00:25:39.93 Our leases- we found out about Monument 00:25:40.04\00:25:42.90 Valley that our leases that we thought we had 00:25:43.00\00:25:44.64 we didn't have. - Hm. - So there was a whole 00:25:44.71\00:25:47.74 lot of things that happened. We had a lot of ups and we 00:25:47.84\00:25:50.28 had a lot of downs, we had a school out there; 00:25:50.38\00:25:52.41 and finally, we decided, based on all the things 00:25:52.55\00:25:55.35 that were going on, that we would close the doors 00:25:55.45\00:25:57.12 for that and we would reignite our mission in the Kayenta 00:25:57.25\00:25:59.72 area. So the building you saw in that picture 00:25:59.85\00:26:01.29 is where we moved our mission to-to Kayenta. 00:26:01.39\00:26:04.09 - And how far is that from Monument Valley? 00:26:04.19\00:26:05.89 - What's it about-30 minutes? - A little 00:26:05.99\00:26:08.10 less. - Yeah, about 30 minutes. - Okay, so it's 00:26:08.20\00:26:10.20 still within the region. - So here's the thing- 00:26:10.27\00:26:11.93 yeah! And so what's- and this is the thing! 00:26:12.03\00:26:13.50 Monument Valley is in Utah, and Kayenta's in 00:26:13.60\00:26:17.34 Arizona. So Nevada-Utah has literally four states 00:26:17.44\00:26:20.41 because of this. We had one church, and that's 00:26:20.54\00:26:22.34 that Kayenta church you just saw on the reservations. 00:26:22.44\00:26:25.75 So, the reservation covers more than one state. - Wow. 00:26:25.85\00:26:28.98 - Yeah. So, we're moving our work away from that 00:26:29.05\00:26:32.59 to the Kayenta area. And right now, we want to make 00:26:32.69\00:26:37.16 the focus on that. But the thing that we're doing 00:26:37.26\00:26:39.36 now which is so important is we're not just going 00:26:39.46\00:26:41.86 walking in and saying, "We're going to start 00:26:41.96\00:26:43.30 a school, we're going to go in and do"... We're 00:26:43.33\00:26:45.37 going to need to identify what their needs are in 00:26:45.47\00:26:47.70 that community, and then meet that need. - Right, 00:26:47.77\00:26:50.07 because you can't just go in and say, "Well, 00:26:50.17\00:26:51.51 here's what we're offering." You might be answering 00:26:51.57\00:26:53.27 questions they're not even asking. - Well, 00:26:53.38\00:26:55.38 that's what we've traditionally done. This time, we don't want 00:26:55.44\00:26:57.18 to do that. We want to do it the right way. We 00:26:57.25\00:26:58.75 want to be effective in the way we do ministry. 00:26:58.81\00:27:00.15 So now, we're going to go out and determine 00:27:00.18\00:27:01.88 what is needed. So, we're talking to North American 00:27:01.98\00:27:04.59 Division, we're talking to the General Conference- 00:27:04.69\00:27:07.12 we're talking to everyone to try to find out ways- 00:27:07.22\00:27:08.79 talking to our schools, Loma Linda, and all 00:27:08.89\00:27:10.79 different places to try to find- get used to tools 00:27:10.89\00:27:13.19 to be able to enhance our ministry. - Now, the 00:27:13.26\00:27:15.80 picture we just saw... What do you do in that 00:27:15.90\00:27:17.90 facility? - You want to talk about it, Pastor? 00:27:17.97\00:27:19.97 - That facility was actually built to be a community 00:27:21.17\00:27:27.64 center. So it has rooms in it, it has a kitchen in 00:27:27.74\00:27:30.95 it...and where the house is was supposed to be 00:27:31.01\00:27:34.62 where the sanctuary was going to be built. So, it 00:27:34.72\00:27:37.25 ended up, they didn't follow the original plan. 00:27:37.35\00:27:39.12 - Now is that the house on the- the blue building? 00:27:39.22\00:27:41.49 - It'd be on the left, the way I'm looking 00:27:41.59\00:27:43.26 at the picture. - Mm. - And so, the main building 00:27:43.32\00:27:46.46 there, there is a good size room there where we do 00:27:46.56\00:27:48.43 meet and have church. - Okay! - But it was intended to be a 00:27:48.53\00:27:52.33 community center, possibly a school, and things like 00:27:52.40\00:27:56.91 that. So, it could be used multifunctional. 00:27:57.01\00:27:59.27 - And one of the things that we just recently 00:28:00.54\00:28:02.71 had a mission group come and plant 30 fruit and nut 00:28:02.81\00:28:06.72 trees on the property. Obviously, it's a desert. 00:28:06.82\00:28:09.95 - Right, I was going to ask about that; where 00:28:10.05\00:28:11.62 do you get the hydration? How do you keep that... 00:28:11.69\00:28:13.32 [laughter] - Yeah. So we have been doing some 00:28:13.42\00:28:16.02 experimenting on the things that will grow 00:28:16.09\00:28:18.79 the best in the desert with the least amount 00:28:18.93\00:28:20.80 of water; but if we are going to have something 00:28:20.93\00:28:24.40 planted on the desert, we want something that 00:28:24.50\00:28:26.23 will bear fruit. - Right! - And, just so you know, 00:28:26.33\00:28:30.91 Kayenta is located in a county that has the highest 00:28:31.01\00:28:35.04 food insecurities in the entire United States. 00:28:35.11\00:28:38.91 - Hm! Now, you mentioned food insecurities. - Yes. 00:28:39.01\00:28:41.78 - Amplify that, 'cause I'm thinking of scarcity, 00:28:41.85\00:28:45.02 but... - Yes. And scarcity is one of those things 00:28:45.12\00:28:47.69 that is part of it. The other part is getting to that food- 00:28:47.79\00:28:53.16 being able to get on that food. So when you think 00:28:53.26\00:28:55.56 of an area that is, you know, the size of three 00:28:55.66\00:28:59.27 states, and you live in that area and there's 00:28:59.33\00:29:02.90 only 13 grocery stores, the likelihood that one 00:29:02.97\00:29:05.04 of those is close to you is very unlikely. - And 00:29:05.14\00:29:07.81 then what about supply? - Exactly. The fresh food 00:29:07.91\00:29:11.15 is fresh fruits and vegetables; that is particularly the most 00:29:11.88\00:29:16.32 difficult thing for them to get. So they are randomly 00:29:16.42\00:29:20.56 scattered about. You wouldn't call them grocery 00:29:20.66\00:29:22.86 stores; we call them trading posts or by 00:29:22.92\00:29:24.66 the little chapter houses, and so there they can 00:29:24.76\00:29:28.46 find chips, they can find soda pop, they 00:29:28.56\00:29:31.67 can find candy bars, but not... - Junk food type 00:29:31.77\00:29:35.00 food. - Exactly. Not that healthy food that they 00:29:35.10\00:29:37.81 need. - Like the broccoli and the carrots and all 00:29:37.91\00:29:39.27 of... - Exactly. - You know what's amazing 00:29:39.37\00:29:40.71 to me about this whole thing, and I think that 00:29:40.74\00:29:42.08 all of you see this, is where you're located 00:29:42.11\00:29:45.98 is not far from a state, California, where most of 00:29:46.05\00:29:51.09 the fruits and vegetables are just flooding the nation. 00:29:51.19\00:29:54.26 And I think that maybe as you talked about, 00:29:54.36\00:29:57.13 we're talking to different unions and different... 00:29:57.26\00:29:58.86 North American Division. One of those, maybe part 00:29:58.93\00:30:03.06 of your plan, is how to get these places stocked. 00:30:03.16\00:30:06.37 I know it's huge, because you're part of a nation. 00:30:06.43\00:30:09.27 You can't just decide the conference is going 00:30:09.37\00:30:11.91 to stock this with fruits and vegetables; it's a 00:30:11.97\00:30:14.14 whole national chain within the Navajo Nation that has 00:30:14.24\00:30:17.71 to make that a reality. - Yeah. The other thing 00:30:17.81\00:30:19.85 that's important now, we're realizing that 00:30:19.95\00:30:22.95 this is such a huge issue: that one conference, one 00:30:23.05\00:30:27.22 union by itself, can't take this on. So, we're 00:30:27.32\00:30:30.39 having conversations with the North American Division 00:30:30.53\00:30:32.63 to see how we can bring them together-all the 00:30:32.73\00:30:36.83 resources that they have and all the minds to try 00:30:37.77\00:30:40.67 to find a way to solve this. By the end of the 00:30:40.77\00:30:43.34 day, we're out there, we're working on it, and we're 00:30:43.41\00:30:46.07 starting this mission. We want to do well; 00:30:46.17\00:30:48.44 we want to do a good job. In the meantime, we're 00:30:48.54\00:30:51.48 trying to use all of the resources we possibly 00:30:51.55\00:30:53.38 can to bring to bear to solve these problems. 00:30:53.52\00:30:56.08 - And the... - Wha... What would you- 00:30:56.22\00:30:57.79 Go. - No, go ahead. - The unemployment 00:30:57.85\00:30:59.79 rate on the Navajo Nation is 48%. - Hm. - So one 00:30:59.89\00:31:04.13 of the things that I think we don't want to do is 00:31:04.23\00:31:07.10 just come in there and say, "Here's free food for you." 00:31:07.20\00:31:10.10 While that's a need and we do want to help with 00:31:10.20\00:31:14.77 this problem, we want to make long-term solutions. 00:31:14.87\00:31:19.11 - You're enabling the people. - Exactly, because 00:31:19.21\00:31:22.08 that's not going to help that overall problem. So, 00:31:22.14\00:31:24.61 to teach them how to grow their own food is one of 00:31:26.41\00:31:29.85 the things that we've been looking at. In conjunction 00:31:29.95\00:31:32.39 with giving out food as needed, I know that we 00:31:32.49\00:31:35.72 have little sack lunches with non-perishable food 00:31:35.82\00:31:40.03 items that we have stocked, because we do have so many 00:31:40.13\00:31:43.03 people coming through that are just hungry! - Now, I'm 00:31:43.13\00:31:46.23 listening to this epidemic; we want to keep it from 00:31:46.33\00:31:49.30 becoming a pandemic. What do you think contributes to 00:31:49.40\00:31:52.51 the scarcity of grocery stores and this dearth 00:31:53.74\00:31:56.81 of economy among the Navajo Nation? It just seems like a 00:31:56.91\00:32:01.68 traditional problem that just goes back without 00:32:02.78\00:32:05.82 resolution. - So, let me just... I don't want to 00:32:05.92\00:32:07.62 paint this doom and gloom picture. When you drive 00:32:07.69\00:32:10.53 in- 'cause when I first went down, I thought 00:32:10.59\00:32:13.86 this... I was surprised, because their hotels, 00:32:13.93\00:32:16.56 there are all these other things going on. Down the 00:32:16.63\00:32:19.60 street across from the church, across the way, there are 00:32:19.70\00:32:22.54 Burger Kings or whatever kind of thing. There are 00:32:22.60\00:32:25.87 things out there. - A whole lot of local industries. - Yeah! 00:32:25.94\00:32:27.41 There are local industries out there; but what we're 00:32:27.51\00:32:29.51 concerned about is the ability to provide the kind 00:32:29.61\00:32:34.68 of nourishment, the kind of food, and to be able to 00:32:34.75\00:32:37.72 deal with the health issues that the Navajo people have. 00:32:37.82\00:32:40.96 Because for example, diabetes is a huge problem. That's what 00:32:41.09\00:32:44.49 we've discovered. Diabetes is a big problem. Of course, 00:32:44.56\00:32:46.66 the drug... There are other issues that are 00:32:46.76\00:32:50.47 involved. And so, we're concerned about all of 00:32:50.60\00:32:52.53 those things, because we've got to be holistic 00:32:52.60\00:32:54.60 in our approach to ministry- not just, "We're going to 00:32:54.70\00:32:57.31 preach the gospel to you, and then"... We've gotta 00:32:57.37\00:32:58.87 be holistic, so we're concerned about the 00:32:58.97\00:33:00.88 mind, body, and the spirit. We want to do all of that. 00:33:00.98\00:33:03.81 - Yeah, the lifestyle? - Yes. - And the pastures 00:33:03.91\00:33:06.15 on the front line- both of you actually, because you're 00:33:06.21\00:33:09.45 married, that's your facility. You're dealing 00:33:09.52\00:33:11.72 with the spiritual side, you're dealing with the 00:33:11.79\00:33:13.12 social side... What kind of input, as far as programs 00:33:13.15\00:33:17.23 during the week... I know most of us have midweek 00:33:17.33\00:33:19.76 prayer or Bible studies. What are some of the 00:33:19.86\00:33:22.56 unique things that you do to just reach beyond 00:33:22.66\00:33:26.77 the norm? Because you're not dealing with normal 00:33:26.87\00:33:29.87 Adventist community. - Yeah. - The garden, I think. - Well, 00:33:30.01\00:33:34.04 we have done some interesting things with our midweek meeting. 00:33:34.11\00:33:36.85 One time we called it a "soup and salvation." 00:33:38.21\00:33:40.45 - Okay. [laughter] - And so, we served a... - Free 00:33:40.55\00:33:43.79 supper. - ...a meal, and then we, for a while, we 00:33:43.85\00:33:47.66 were showing a series that's the Native New 00:33:47.72\00:33:51.59 Day that Monte Church did. That went very well and 00:33:51.69\00:33:54.70 people enjoyed it, and we had a good amount 00:33:54.80\00:33:57.10 of people coming out for that. - Cooking classes. 00:33:57.20\00:34:01.47 - Yeah, and that made a good impact, too. - I want 00:34:03.00\00:34:08.31 to also transition a little bit, because we have some 00:34:08.41\00:34:10.31 items here that are traditionally- and just 00:34:10.38\00:34:14.38 everyday items that are connected to the nation. 00:34:15.08\00:34:17.29 Describe to our viewers, and in detail, and also our 00:34:17.35\00:34:20.79 listeners could understand what we're watching here. 00:34:20.89\00:34:22.52 What are some of these items that we have here? 00:34:22.62\00:34:24.79 - So, here we have a traditional native female- 00:34:25.76\00:34:31.53 what she would wear-and the old grandmas, you will 00:34:31.63\00:34:35.74 see them still wearing these clothing every day. 00:34:35.84\00:34:39.44 So, the younger generation, not as much, but this is 00:34:40.11\00:34:43.75 definitely what you would see them wearing as you 00:34:43.85\00:34:46.58 see them. And the beadwork, they are very talented people. 00:34:46.65\00:34:51.02 Very talented-the pottery... Over here, we have a basket, 00:34:51.62\00:34:57.46 and this basket was traditionally used to 00:34:58.06\00:35:00.20 carry water. Now, you think of a basket. The 00:35:00.30\00:35:02.30 water's just gonna run out of it. But this has been 00:35:02.36\00:35:05.57 woven with material that they would soak it overnight 00:35:05.67\00:35:09.54 in water, and it swells. And then the next day, 00:35:10.21\00:35:13.44 they could go and carry their water in that basket, 00:35:13.54\00:35:17.18 and it would not go out. And the same with the flat 00:35:18.18\00:35:22.08 basket; there's something that's a food, a traditional 00:35:22.18\00:35:25.25 food, that they like. It's called blue corn 00:35:25.35\00:35:28.16 mush, so you got a... Yes. And so, they would 00:35:28.26\00:35:32.76 put it in this basket. - Okay. - Their corn 00:35:32.86\00:35:36.10 mush there. So, these are all things-very 00:35:36.20\00:35:39.03 talented people. - The pottery, as well. - The 00:35:39.17\00:35:43.61 pottery as well as the Native American flutes 00:35:43.67\00:35:47.18 that you're seeing here. - Mhm. Pastor has a skill! 00:35:47.24\00:35:50.38 I wanna kind of give our audience here just a taste 00:35:50.45\00:35:53.85 of what that Native American flute sounds like. If you're in 00:35:53.95\00:35:59.22 the car listening, you'll enjoy this. If you're 00:35:59.32\00:36:01.36 watching, I know you will, also. 00:36:01.42\00:36:02.79 [plays Native American flute] 00:36:04.89\00:36:11.60 - Wow. - Amen. - You know, just the sound of that takes 00:36:52.14\00:36:54.64 your mind... I mean, I just got transported in 00:36:54.74\00:36:58.05 my thoughts. - Yes. - To a completely different setting. 00:36:58.15\00:37:01.38 If I closed my eyes, I would feel like I am- 00:37:01.48\00:37:03.08 you know, the sun is rising or the sun is setting, and 00:37:04.25\00:37:06.32 it's just that cool morning; the desert is quiet...or that's 00:37:06.42\00:37:11.09 the call to worship that is beamed through a speaker 00:37:11.19\00:37:15.56 over the valley: "It's time to come and worship." 00:37:15.66\00:37:17.63 What a beautiful sound that has, and it is very 00:37:17.73\00:37:20.67 apropos-very reminiscent. - Yes. - Of the sound that we 00:37:20.80\00:37:25.67 have traditionally heard. You know, television does 00:37:25.74\00:37:28.31 its part to either mess the picture up or contribute 00:37:28.44\00:37:32.21 to the picture. We can't say, and for those who 00:37:32.38\00:37:34.78 are watching the program, television doesn't always 00:37:34.88\00:37:36.72 give you the picture that the nation is represented 00:37:36.82\00:37:40.16 by. - Let me just add, one of the things we 00:37:40.26\00:37:43.56 talked about was, you know, it's one thing to 00:37:43.66\00:37:45.69 play the flute, but we we're hoping that we 00:37:45.76\00:37:48.90 had someone that would represent the Navajo Nation 00:37:49.00\00:37:51.20 here today. We wanted to bring some representation 00:37:51.27\00:37:53.70 of that, because it's one thing to be able 00:37:53.77\00:37:55.54 to talk about it, but it's the other thing 00:37:55.60\00:37:56.94 to actually have someone be able to talk and share... 00:37:56.97\00:37:58.57 - See the people. - Yeah. It's really important, because these 00:37:58.67\00:38:02.51 are amazing, amazing people. These are amazing 00:38:02.61\00:38:04.88 people, so I'm just hoping and praying that as we, down 00:38:04.95\00:38:07.58 the road at some point, we'd be able to come back 00:38:07.68\00:38:09.12 and give a report of what God has done and somebody'd 00:38:09.18\00:38:11.05 be able to come and do that for us! - It even might 00:38:11.15\00:38:12.62 be good to have some on-location videos, church 00:38:12.72\00:38:15.02 services, people coming into the center...just some 00:38:15.12\00:38:17.73 drive-through-you know, nowadays, we have the 00:38:17.83\00:38:19.73 GoPro-just driving into the reservation, going 00:38:19.83\00:38:22.23 out there on that vast morning. It's just- because 00:38:22.33\00:38:25.27 in fact, I mean, I'm being educated to some degree 00:38:25.33\00:38:28.57 here today, because even though a portion of my 00:38:28.67\00:38:31.77 background is Blackfoot Indian (which is a southeastern-)... 00:38:31.87\00:38:35.21 I've been to South Dakota, but it's a different tribe. 00:38:37.11\00:38:40.42 - Yes. - You know? And I think Pastor talked about 00:38:40.52\00:38:42.75 that. But the Navajo Nation... Tell me: let's get back to the 00:38:42.85\00:38:45.95 focus of the Navajo Nation. Statistically, how do they 00:38:46.05\00:38:49.99 rank populace-wise when you compare them to other 00:38:50.13\00:38:55.36 Indian nations around the United States? - So, 00:38:55.43\00:38:58.47 geographically, it's the largest land area, and 00:38:58.57\00:39:02.00 they are also the largest Native American tribe. 00:39:02.14\00:39:05.84 - Okay. - In the United States. So, what we sometimes think 00:39:05.94\00:39:11.15 about with these tribes, there may be some smaller 00:39:11.25\00:39:13.48 little tribes in different areas, but this is very 00:39:14.18\00:39:16.69 vast and very large, which is what makes 00:39:16.82\00:39:19.55 it so complicated. So, if you have a smaller 00:39:19.69\00:39:23.46 tribe of, say, 900 Native Americans and you have 00:39:23.56\00:39:28.53 a few unemployed, that's one thing; but when you 00:39:28.63\00:39:30.97 have such a large area and such a huge amount 00:39:31.03\00:39:34.44 of people with unemployment, that creates its own set of 00:39:34.54\00:39:40.28 problems. And I think that that is what's making it also 00:39:40.38\00:39:46.31 a larger challenge. And as Dr. Brown mentioned, 00:39:46.41\00:39:48.98 the Navajo Nation is a dry nation, so there's 00:39:49.55\00:39:51.79 not supposed to be any alcohol on it. But one of 00:39:51.85\00:39:54.66 their biggest means of transportation is hitchhiking. 00:39:54.79\00:39:59.33 So, anytime when you're driving in the region-and 00:39:59.46\00:40:02.06 it's relatively safe to pick up hitchhikers because 00:40:02.16\00:40:06.87 that's how they go. When they need dental work, 00:40:06.94\00:40:09.44 they have to hitchhike 65 miles to get from our area 00:40:09.50\00:40:13.98 over to Tuba City where they can get some free 00:40:14.11\00:40:16.38 dental care. So you'll see them, 5 in the morning, 00:40:16.48\00:40:19.11 hitchhiking. So what happens is people will 00:40:19.25\00:40:23.12 come into these border towns, which is- we live 00:40:23.22\00:40:25.45 in a border town- and they'll get drunk. And 00:40:25.55\00:40:29.69 then they have no way to get back home. So, 00:40:29.82\00:40:34.73 this is where I think the biggest shock for 00:40:34.83\00:40:38.50 me in ministry came in- when we started having 00:40:38.57\00:40:41.87 people who were drunk come to our door and 00:40:41.97\00:40:45.77 say, "Can you give me a ride home?" Well, I'm from 00:40:45.87\00:40:48.44 the Midwest; I'm from Illinois! You know? And 00:40:48.54\00:40:51.21 so for me, I had never seen that. - Wake-up 00:40:51.28\00:40:55.52 call? - It was a wake-up call! But a dear friend of 00:40:55.62\00:41:02.02 mine who I really pray for her salvation, an 00:41:02.12\00:41:05.36 alcoholic, she's just a year older than me, 00:41:05.46\00:41:07.70 and she shared with me how many of her relatives 00:41:07.80\00:41:11.73 and other Navajos, that's how they passed away. 00:41:11.83\00:41:14.40 They became drunk, and then they were trying to 00:41:14.50\00:41:17.87 make their way home, and they pass out and either 00:41:17.97\00:41:20.44 freeze to death or, in the summer in the desert, 00:41:20.54\00:41:23.14 it's very hot, and they become dehydrated. 00:41:23.24\00:41:25.21 - Hm. Now, talk about some of the things that 00:41:25.28\00:41:28.22 are, as far as a need... We have a picture of a 00:41:28.32\00:41:30.69 group of people that are standing in front of that 00:41:30.75\00:41:33.22 facility. Describe who these people are, and 00:41:33.29\00:41:36.76 tell me more about them. - Those are the members 00:41:36.86\00:41:41.30 of the Kayenta Church. - Some of them, yes. 00:41:41.40\00:41:44.20 - some of them in the back. You see our 00:41:44.27\00:41:45.60 executive secretary on the right in the back- 00:41:45.63\00:41:47.54 Carlos Camacho. - In the blue shirt. - In the picture. 00:41:47.64\00:41:50.24 Yeah, in the shirt. A lot of those are members of 00:41:50.34\00:41:53.04 the church. Pastor, you want to talk about that? 00:41:53.11\00:41:57.55 Also, talk about what your vision is going to 00:41:57.61\00:41:59.71 be for the future. - So, that picture there, that 00:41:59.78\00:42:04.02 would've been taken... - Last summer. - Last 00:42:04.12\00:42:06.05 summer when we had the intern pastor. He was in the 00:42:06.15\00:42:08.32 middle in the back there. They did a good work there, 00:42:08.42\00:42:12.29 I think, but they're only there six months. Meeting 00:42:12.43\00:42:15.56 with the people and kind of- the transition has 00:42:15.66\00:42:18.63 been very difficult for them, coming from Monument Valley 00:42:18.73\00:42:21.70 to Kayenta. Some of those people have already been 00:42:21.80\00:42:24.74 attending there because Kayenta has been there 00:42:24.84\00:42:26.88 a while as a church plant. So for some of them, they're 00:42:26.98\00:42:31.11 already there. Others, it's not so easy for them to 00:42:31.21\00:42:33.55 make that transition. - It's hard, because 00:42:33.62\00:42:36.92 one of the things we found out is 00:42:36.99\00:42:38.59 that 30 miles for us, you know, you get in 00:42:38.65\00:42:41.16 the car, jump in the car, and drive. - Right. 00:42:41.26\00:42:42.59 - Everybody doesn't have a vehicle. - Hm. - Everybody's 00:42:42.72\00:42:44.49 not going to be able to make that trip up to 00:42:44.59\00:42:46.19 Monument Valley, so that's kind of one of the things that 00:42:46.29\00:42:50.03 we need to work on. We are needing-and we were 00:42:50.13\00:42:52.77 talking about this-we were needing long-term 00:42:52.90\00:42:55.44 missionaries. - Yeah, expand on that, because 00:42:55.54\00:42:58.24 we hear the word, "missionary," and we have one picture, but 00:42:58.34\00:43:01.41 there's a different one. - Yeah. So, when we first 00:43:01.51\00:43:04.21 started looking at this, one of the things we saw 00:43:04.28\00:43:06.28 that there were people who just came to the res 00:43:06.35\00:43:08.72 with the idea that they were just gonna be a 00:43:08.82\00:43:12.02 missionary. They weren't trained, they didn't have 00:43:12.12\00:43:14.66 any background in mission work, but they had a 00:43:14.76\00:43:17.33 desire to be there. And with that, we ran into 00:43:17.39\00:43:21.30 a lot of problems. I'm just going to be honest 00:43:21.40\00:43:22.93 with you-we ran into a lot of problems. So what 00:43:23.03\00:43:24.37 we've said is, going forward, we want to 00:43:24.43\00:43:26.40 find people who are trained missionaries. 00:43:26.50\00:43:28.94 Just like you said- missionaries overseas, 00:43:29.00\00:43:30.71 you know, we want to have people that are trained, who 00:43:30.81\00:43:33.41 understand culturally how to adjust, how to 00:43:33.48\00:43:37.71 minister to people, and that's what we're looking 00:43:37.81\00:43:41.15 for long-term. And Pastor, Nancy, you want to add to this? 00:43:41.18\00:43:45.22 - I think that that is exactly what they need, 00:43:45.85\00:43:49.19 because they are a people that are very weary to trust. 00:43:49.29\00:43:52.19 They've been through, as you know, with a lot of the 00:43:52.29\00:43:54.96 Native Americans the history. And so there's been pain; 00:43:55.06\00:43:58.77 there's been betrayal. And so now, that has 00:43:58.83\00:44:03.07 made our work a lot more difficult. And so, whereas 00:44:03.14\00:44:06.81 sometimes pastors would move after 5-7 years, 00:44:08.01\00:44:10.88 that's just when these people are starting to 00:44:11.55\00:44:13.42 say, "You're my pastor. I trust you." And that's 00:44:13.48\00:44:16.99 just at the point where you can start working. 00:44:17.09\00:44:19.39 - And a new guy comes into town and they think, 00:44:19.49\00:44:21.16 "Oh, boy." - Exactly. But there is definitely 00:44:21.26\00:44:26.19 a place for people who want to come in and be 00:44:26.26\00:44:29.53 support, because this is not just a church-this 00:44:29.63\00:44:33.00 is a mission. We have the gardens, the greenhouse, 00:44:33.10\00:44:36.00 and all the other programs that we're running. So those 00:44:36.10\00:44:40.04 that are there for the long haul become weary. 00:44:40.14\00:44:42.64 They need those hands that would come in short-term and 00:44:42.74\00:44:46.41 say, "We'll be happy to come in and maybe do 00:44:46.51\00:44:49.92 this little seminar for you," or "We'll help out 00:44:49.98\00:44:52.25 in your garden," and "We'll"... whatever the needs at that 00:44:52.32\00:44:55.62 time may be. So, there's a need for those people 00:44:55.72\00:44:57.79 that come in, connected with the long-term missionaries, 00:44:57.86\00:45:01.86 as well. - What are some of the things that are 00:45:01.93\00:45:04.73 needed in this facility? Because when you're 00:45:04.80\00:45:07.74 talking about programs, programs obviously include 00:45:07.80\00:45:10.87 not only personnel, but also include other items 00:45:10.94\00:45:14.54 that are needed there, or... You talked about 00:45:14.64\00:45:17.18 vehicles. I mean, what are some of the needs 00:45:17.28\00:45:19.78 that you see? And any one of you can chime in 00:45:19.85\00:45:21.88 on that for there to be a bridge built between 00:45:21.98\00:45:25.09 you and the furnishing that need? to the 00:45:25.15\00:45:27.19 Navajos. - So, that mission site, as you saw, has the 00:45:27.29\00:45:30.73 one community center building that was built, and the one 00:45:30.79\00:45:34.56 house that was moved in there. I would like to see 00:45:35.63\00:45:41.44 it build much more than that. There should be another 00:45:41.54\00:45:43.71 staff housing-at least one more...maybe two 00:45:43.81\00:45:46.31 more. And then I would also like to see a sanctuary 00:45:46.37\00:45:48.94 that's dedicated for worship- and I'm not talking something 00:45:49.04\00:45:52.08 very large, but something that would hold at least 00:45:52.18\00:45:55.32 80 people-then the community center could be used more for 00:45:55.42\00:45:59.42 what it was intended to be used for. - So that's, 00:45:59.49\00:46:02.32 right now, multifaceted, multipurpose. - Mhm. 00:46:02.42\00:46:04.96 - And Dr. Brown, when you think about this 00:46:05.03\00:46:08.10 challenge- 'cause you're sitting in the hot seat, if 00:46:08.20\00:46:11.07 I can use that phrase. - Global picture, man. 00:46:11.13\00:46:13.30 - Yeah. You have Nevada-Utah, and then now you have the 00:46:13.40\00:46:16.10 Arizona Conference, which is right next door. You have 00:46:16.17\00:46:18.81 Utah... I'd love to come out and see it, just to 00:46:19.64\00:46:25.15 come out and just breathe some different air with some 00:46:25.25\00:46:28.25 red dust in it. [laughter] But talk about what you're 00:46:28.35\00:46:33.92 envisioning to see happen here and how the viewers 00:46:33.99\00:46:36.42 and listeners could participate in that, 'cause there may be 00:46:36.49\00:46:38.79 some financial needs that somebody might say, 00:46:38.86\00:46:40.50 "Hey! We'd like to see another building go up; 00:46:40.56\00:46:42.96 we'd like to contribute somehow." - Yeah. We 00:46:43.06\00:46:45.10 need to have an additional building. But in addition to 00:46:45.17\00:46:49.00 that, we also need to be able to design ministry 00:46:49.07\00:46:52.51 models that fit the unique needs of that area, and 00:46:52.61\00:46:58.05 that's gonna take resources. We're not in this to just throw 00:46:58.15\00:47:02.05 things at people. We want to do this right. When I went 00:47:02.15\00:47:05.45 to the Nation, we sat down; we had a meeting 00:47:05.55\00:47:07.02 with the things that are changing-one of the those 00:47:07.09\00:47:10.09 upper? administration. We 00:47:10.16\00:47:13.26 talked about the fact that the Adventist church, if 00:47:13.36\00:47:15.43 we're going to be on this field- we've been here 00:47:15.50\00:47:17.47 for a long time. They respect the Adventist 00:47:17.53\00:47:19.30 church. But in order to maintain that, we've got 00:47:19.37\00:47:21.60 to do ministry the right way. We have other groups 00:47:21.67\00:47:24.67 that are out there, doing ministry; but as an Adventist, 00:47:24.77\00:47:26.88 I just really believe that when we go and we do 00:47:26.94\00:47:29.61 this, we've got to do ministry in a way that's effective. So 00:47:29.68\00:47:31.95 what that looks like, how that's going to end up, 00:47:32.05\00:47:33.88 we're not really sure, because at the end of 00:47:33.95\00:47:35.52 the day, I just want to make sure what fits with 00:47:35.62\00:47:37.55 the needs are. If there's health needs (x2), I want 00:47:37.65\00:47:40.79 to be able to meet those needs. We want to create 00:47:40.86\00:47:42.52 a garden, I want to do that. So, we're looking 00:47:42.62\00:47:46.16 at everything as a global picture, and we're asking 00:47:46.26\00:47:48.86 for support with that. We're asking for everybody 00:47:48.96\00:47:51.33 that's going to support us with that. But in the 00:47:51.40\00:47:53.64 meantime, we want to be able to create and 00:47:53.74\00:47:55.40 enhance the school- I mean the church. We want 00:47:55.50\00:47:58.74 to be able to maybe find ways to fund that. And 00:47:58.84\00:48:02.11 so, those are the kinds of things that we're looking 00:48:02.21\00:48:03.55 at right now. - Well Pastor, go ahead and plug some 00:48:03.61\00:48:06.55 suggestions in there in the time we have. - I feel 00:48:06.65\00:48:10.49 like one of our needs (besides our full-time 00:48:10.55\00:48:13.09 missionaries) is having student missionaries that 00:48:13.19\00:48:15.66 are coming, even if it's just for a summer. Because 00:48:15.76\00:48:19.03 with our programs we're doing in the summer with 00:48:19.16\00:48:21.13 the children, there's such a great need and 00:48:21.26\00:48:23.37 there's such an opening for that. Those programs 00:48:23.47\00:48:26.74 fill right up if we had more young people that 00:48:26.80\00:48:29.04 just would dedicate a summer to come there 00:48:29.17\00:48:31.64 and help with those programs. And it's something that's not 00:48:31.71\00:48:34.04 that intense, and it's a fun program to be a part 00:48:34.14\00:48:37.95 of. - Even a retired person- a grandma and grandpa who 00:48:38.05\00:48:41.25 might want to just come in and... Next week, we're 00:48:41.35\00:48:45.75 going to be having a VBS over in Kayenta, and it's 00:48:45.85\00:48:49.09 basically all older people who are coming to do that, 00:48:49.16\00:48:52.43 and this is something consistent. But there 00:48:52.53\00:48:56.26 are a lot of needs. And one also that I'll just 00:48:56.36\00:48:59.80 add is blankets. I know that sounds very simple, 00:48:59.87\00:49:02.60 but we had some children who were attending church 00:49:02.70\00:49:06.07 and coming to the Wednesday night, and they finally got up 00:49:06.17\00:49:09.18 the courage to tell my daughter, "We don't have 00:49:09.28\00:49:12.85 any bedding. We're sleeping on the floor. We don't have 00:49:12.95\00:49:15.95 any bedding." And out on the reservations, some 00:49:16.05\00:49:18.89 of them are sleeping in hogans with dirt floors. 00:49:18.99\00:49:21.16 And so, as it comes around October in the desert, it 00:49:21.29\00:49:24.39 does start getting cold. And so, that's something 00:49:24.49\00:49:27.33 that we'd like to do in October if we have those 00:49:27.43\00:49:30.23 things is to give out blankets to families 00:49:30.33\00:49:33.64 that need that. But we do see we have other 00:49:33.70\00:49:37.37 denominations who are bringing in 16-20 missionaries 00:49:37.47\00:49:40.51 at a time, just swooping over the reservation, and 00:49:40.61\00:49:43.48 we would really like to see that our church... 00:49:43.61\00:49:48.28 - That push among Adventists. - Yes! Amen. - Nancy, talk about 00:49:48.38\00:49:50.62 the connection with some of the training that missionaries 00:49:50.69\00:49:54.12 were thinking they should be involved in, really quickly. 00:49:54.19\00:49:57.16 - Yeah, about 30 seconds here. - Yeah. So we just 00:49:57.26\00:50:01.73 want to make sure that when people come that 00:50:01.80\00:50:03.83 they can have a little bit of training so that they 00:50:03.90\00:50:07.80 understand about what there really are coming- 00:50:07.90\00:50:10.44 what they're going to see-the culture, because 00:50:10.51\00:50:12.84 no, we really need that so that they have an 00:50:12.91\00:50:15.71 understanding. I know that for me, the first Sabbath, 00:50:15.81\00:50:18.11 a non-Adventist there, and I went and I gave 00:50:19.41\00:50:21.78 her a hug. She pulled back from me and she 00:50:21.85\00:50:24.85 says, "Navajos shake hands." Okay. So I learned 00:50:24.95\00:50:30.23 that this is- their greeting is a nice, light handshake. 00:50:30.93\00:50:34.30 You know, just some simple things like that. - Right. The 00:50:34.40\00:50:37.00 traditional things that sometimes ignorance 00:50:37.10\00:50:39.27 can be a barrier, whereas becoming aware of it... I 00:50:39.37\00:50:42.87 want those who are watching the program and listening 00:50:42.97\00:50:45.27 to the program before we transition to our 00:50:45.37\00:50:47.48 newsbreak here, I want to be able to give you 00:50:47.58\00:50:50.11 the information that you need to get in touch with 00:50:50.25\00:50:53.08 the Pacific Union Natives Ministries.
