00:12:56.71\00:12:58.97 Well, shortly after I felt the Lord's call in my life, 00:12:59.01\00:13:01.71 the first thing I did was to help my parents, 00:13:01.74\00:13:03.75 they were missionaries at that time in Venezuela. 00:13:03.78\00:13:06.28 My mother is a physician, medical doctor, 00:13:06.31\00:13:08.72 my dad, a pastor, 00:13:08.75\00:13:10.09 and they had a mission school there 00:13:10.12\00:13:11.95 and a lifestyle center. 00:13:11.99\00:13:13.46 So my first step was I will help them, 00:13:13.49\00:13:16.09 I'll just be available, you know, 24/7. 00:13:16.12\00:13:18.86 And shortly after that, two or three years after that, 00:13:18.89\00:13:22.80 the Lord called me even into ministry on my own 00:13:22.83\00:13:26.57 because someone who knew what we were doing as a family 00:13:26.60\00:13:30.01 in Venezuela told me if you go to Colombia, 00:13:30.04\00:13:32.94 and do the very same work 00:13:32.97\00:13:34.38 your parents are doing in Venezuela, 00:13:34.41\00:13:36.01 I will donate a farm. 00:13:36.04\00:13:37.88 And so that happened. 00:13:37.91\00:13:39.28 And in 1996, July 18, with Yvonne, my wife, 00:13:39.31\00:13:43.82 and four other team members, 00:13:43.89\00:13:45.99 we pioneered this institution in Columbia, 00:13:46.02\00:13:49.76 where we worked for 15 years. 00:13:49.79\00:13:51.76 How exciting. 00:13:51.79\00:13:53.13 How did you get to Hartland? 00:13:53.16\00:13:55.83 Well, the Lord blessed in Colombia, 00:13:55.86\00:13:57.73 and I think it was the result of that efforts. 00:13:57.77\00:14:00.87 That was the connecting link with Hartland 00:14:00.94\00:14:04.14 because as they were looking for a new president, 00:14:04.21\00:14:07.18 they were looking for possibilities. 00:14:07.21\00:14:08.98 Someone mentioned my name. 00:14:09.01\00:14:10.75 And we had at that time 85 students 00:14:10.78\00:14:14.45 as a secondary and post-secondary level 00:14:14.48\00:14:16.25 at this mission school, 00:14:16.28\00:14:17.62 we had a lifestyle center with about 20 health guests. 00:14:17.65\00:14:20.26 We had two vegetarian restaurants, 00:14:20.29\00:14:22.29 a publishing ministry, a farm, 00:14:22.32\00:14:25.06 and a very active community outreach. 00:14:25.09\00:14:28.03 So Hartland reached out, 00:14:28.06\00:14:30.27 they were looking for candidates, 00:14:30.30\00:14:31.83 and they asked if I was willing to be nominated 00:14:31.87\00:14:34.34 to that position in 2010. 00:14:34.37\00:14:37.31 Okay, what was that nomination process like? 00:14:37.34\00:14:41.04 They sent us quite a long list of questions, 00:14:41.08\00:14:44.78 and I say sent us 00:14:44.81\00:14:46.15 because there were several candidates 00:14:46.18\00:14:47.95 for that nomination process. 00:14:47.98\00:14:49.82 It was about 83 questions, 00:14:49.85\00:14:51.79 as some of them very interesting. 00:14:51.82\00:14:53.22 In fact, one of the questionnaires asked, 00:14:53.25\00:14:55.42 "Are there any things, standards or points of Hartland 00:14:55.46\00:14:59.16 that you disagree with?" 00:14:59.19\00:15:00.70 And I wrestle with that one in particular, 00:15:00.73\00:15:03.37 then I decided to answer it, honestly, 00:15:03.40\00:15:05.57 because I did have some concerns, 00:15:05.60\00:15:08.10 in terms of the stuffy environment 00:15:08.14\00:15:11.64 you sometimes felt in certain circles 00:15:11.67\00:15:14.44 where I grew up as a missionary 00:15:14.48\00:15:16.14 and also in self-supporting work. 00:15:16.18\00:15:18.31 Okay, so you were very honest with them about the things 00:15:18.35\00:15:21.78 that you felt should be changed for the glory of the Lord. 00:15:21.82\00:15:28.16 Yes. 00:15:28.19\00:15:29.52 And even though you were very honest 00:15:29.56\00:15:30.93 about all of these, you still got the position? 00:15:30.96\00:15:33.29 Yes. 00:15:33.33\00:15:34.66 Which was a, you know, 00:15:34.70\00:15:36.03 an evidence that God was leading in that direction. 00:15:36.06\00:15:37.40 Amen. 00:15:37.47\00:15:38.80 And even a greater evidence, 00:15:38.83\00:15:40.17 something that Norbert shared with us a little earlier 00:15:40.20\00:15:42.77 when we were in the green room, 00:15:42.80\00:15:44.91 is that once he was there as president, 00:15:44.94\00:15:48.54 it didn't just change overnight. 00:15:48.58\00:15:51.28 No, it was a transitional 00:15:51.31\00:15:53.72 and it kind of getting everybody on board. 00:15:53.75\00:15:56.12 But tell us what happened 00:15:56.15\00:15:57.49 when you were in Berrien Springs? 00:15:57.52\00:15:59.79 Okay, Berrien Springs, you referred to that? 00:15:59.82\00:16:02.29 Yes, we do. 00:16:02.32\00:16:04.03 Berrien Springs was, as I was growing up as a child 00:16:04.06\00:16:06.56 in Andrews University. 00:16:06.59\00:16:07.93 Oh, no, no, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. 00:16:07.96\00:16:09.30 No, I'm talking about with Ted. 00:16:09.33\00:16:11.03 Okay. Very well. 00:16:11.07\00:16:12.40 That was Triadelphia Adventist Church. 00:16:12.43\00:16:13.84 Okay. 00:16:13.87\00:16:15.20 And I was invited there to a health summit, 00:16:15.24\00:16:18.07 regional health summit. 00:16:18.11\00:16:19.47 And when I went there, 00:16:19.51\00:16:20.88 I realized that there were 00:16:20.91\00:16:22.24 quite a number of denominational leaders, 00:16:22.28\00:16:24.71 high church officers there. 00:16:24.75\00:16:26.15 And that's when I learned that this was the church 00:16:26.18\00:16:28.15 where Elder Wilson had his membership. 00:16:28.18\00:16:29.68 Yes. 00:16:29.72\00:16:31.05 As I walked in, I said, "Lord, 00:16:31.09\00:16:32.42 if you want me to meet someone here 00:16:32.45\00:16:34.56 that could help Hartland move to be a supportive ministry, 00:16:34.59\00:16:37.89 please do so." 00:16:37.93\00:16:39.56 And, you know, I had just prayed that prayer, 00:16:39.59\00:16:42.23 and I sat down at church 00:16:42.26\00:16:44.20 and Elder Wilson sits beside me. 00:16:44.27\00:16:46.23 Oh, that's amazing. 00:16:46.27\00:16:47.64 And my heart just started throbbing 00:16:47.67\00:16:49.17 because I thought this is the answer to prayer. 00:16:49.20\00:16:51.54 I greet, Elder Wilson, I gave him my business card. 00:16:51.57\00:16:54.48 He took a look at it and he smiled. 00:16:54.51\00:16:57.55 Then he had, he was one of the presenters. 00:16:57.58\00:17:00.22 And during his presentation, he made an appeal, 00:17:00.25\00:17:02.82 that the Lord's work will not be finished 00:17:02.85\00:17:04.75 until pastors, lay people are working together. 00:17:04.79\00:17:09.56 Total member involvement isn't it, 00:17:09.59\00:17:11.29 you know, but that's supporting ministries 00:17:11.33\00:17:14.33 needed to be supportive and that insubordinate. 00:17:14.36\00:17:17.40 When he finished, he sat back, right where I was. 00:17:17.47\00:17:20.84 And I asked him at the end of the service, 00:17:20.87\00:17:23.00 "Elder Wilson, 00:17:23.04\00:17:24.37 how can Hartland be a supportive ministry." 00:17:24.41\00:17:26.68 And that started the process. 00:17:26.71\00:17:28.41 He said, "Lord wants to do great things through Hartland, 00:17:28.44\00:17:32.21 there are a few things that we need to look at." 00:17:32.25\00:17:34.98 And he said, "I will send someone to visit with you 00:17:35.02\00:17:37.32 so we can start a process of dialogue." 00:17:37.39\00:17:39.52 Well, tell us about some of the changes 00:17:39.55\00:17:41.22 that Hartland has made 00:17:41.26\00:17:42.59 to become a supportive ministry? 00:17:42.62\00:17:44.66 Well, some of the changes, it's quite a list, 00:17:44.69\00:17:46.80 but I'll mention some of the major ones. 00:17:46.83\00:17:49.03 The one of the major ones was that in 2014, 00:17:49.06\00:17:52.20 our board of directors made the decision 00:17:52.23\00:17:54.27 to change our tithe policy, 00:17:54.30\00:17:56.60 so that it would be in conformity 00:17:56.64\00:17:59.37 to church policy. 00:17:59.41\00:18:00.88 And what's church policy that 00:18:00.91\00:18:02.31 tithe should be sent to the conference 00:18:02.34\00:18:04.28 for the support of the worldwide mission 00:18:04.31\00:18:06.41 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:18:06.45\00:18:08.02 And that supportive ministry should only use donations, 00:18:08.05\00:18:10.99 freewill offerings, 00:18:11.02\00:18:12.45 so that we're not in that competition 00:18:12.49\00:18:15.19 because we're all supportive of the mission of the church. 00:18:15.22\00:18:17.36 That was one of the most significant changes. 00:18:17.43\00:18:20.23 Another change was in the attitude. 00:18:20.30\00:18:22.73 Our focus was to train missionaries. 00:18:22.76\00:18:25.53 And to train them to do evangelism to do soul winning, 00:18:25.57\00:18:29.24 we still had the strong biblical foundation. 00:18:29.27\00:18:31.77 But rather than pointing at errors, or perceived errors, 00:18:31.81\00:18:35.41 the things that the church was doing, 00:18:35.44\00:18:37.28 that's no longer our calling, 00:18:37.35\00:18:39.35 you know, that's the Lord's responsibility, 00:18:39.38\00:18:41.22 and He has His stewards within the church 00:18:41.25\00:18:43.52 that are taking care of that. 00:18:43.59\00:18:45.05 Our responsibility is to share the everlasting gospel 00:18:45.09\00:18:48.26 and train young people. 00:18:48.29\00:18:49.62 And then what I was really pleased to learn 00:18:49.66\00:18:53.23 is that the doctrinal focus 00:18:53.26\00:18:57.07 became more on righteousness by faith. 00:18:57.10\00:19:00.34 Amen. 00:19:00.37\00:19:01.70 To me that, you know, 00:19:01.74\00:19:03.07 I believe with all of my heart, 00:19:03.10\00:19:04.71 that's the most important message. 00:19:04.74\00:19:07.28 That's the covenant that God made with Abraham. 00:19:07.31\00:19:12.15 And that's the one that has gone all the way 00:19:12.18\00:19:16.02 throughout the Bible. 00:19:16.05\00:19:17.39 Unless we understand righteousness by faith, 00:19:17.42\00:19:20.06 we really can't preach the everlasting gospel. 00:19:20.09\00:19:25.19 It's so important because it's so easy to in that effort 00:19:25.23\00:19:29.76 to live a life that is correct, that is perfect. 00:19:29.80\00:19:34.07 We fall into the trap of trying 00:19:34.14\00:19:35.77 to pull ourselves by our bootstraps, 00:19:35.80\00:19:38.41 and do obedience to all these standards 00:19:38.44\00:19:41.11 on our own effort. 00:19:41.14\00:19:42.48 And religion becomes a burden. Yes. 00:19:42.51\00:19:44.31 Now when you find in Christ, 00:19:44.35\00:19:47.25 His righteousness is His forgiveness, 00:19:47.32\00:19:49.35 His justification 00:19:49.38\00:19:50.72 and His power through the Holy Spirit. 00:19:50.79\00:19:52.45 Amen. 00:19:52.49\00:19:53.86 Then obedience becomes a natural result. 00:19:53.89\00:19:55.29 That His gratitude is not an effort to reach a standard. 00:19:55.32\00:19:58.06 Amen. 00:19:58.09\00:20:00.40 It's a response of God's work in our lives. 00:20:00.43\00:20:02.83 It's a different focus. 00:20:02.86\00:20:04.20 As God works in us to will and to do His good pleasure. 00:20:04.27\00:20:06.13 Amen. And very well put. 00:20:06.17\00:20:08.47 Yes, amen. 00:20:08.50\00:20:09.84 Okay, so, Dr. David Emerson, 00:20:09.87\00:20:12.67 did you grow up in a Christian home? 00:20:12.71\00:20:16.48 No. 00:20:16.51\00:20:18.11 Mike is my father. 00:20:18.15\00:20:19.48 He's a chemist and he eventually, 00:20:19.51\00:20:22.58 he was raised Methodist, 00:20:22.62\00:20:24.02 but they kind of eventually left 00:20:24.09\00:20:25.82 because it was in the 50s. 00:20:25.85\00:20:27.19 And there wasn't, they didn't feel a need 00:20:27.26\00:20:29.42 for religion at that point. 00:20:29.46\00:20:31.06 We were coming out of World War II, 00:20:31.09\00:20:32.76 people were becoming more prosperous. 00:20:32.79\00:20:34.83 My mother came over from Italy when she was five, 00:20:34.86\00:20:36.97 she had a Catholic background. 00:20:37.00\00:20:38.93 And so we really didn't have a religious 00:20:38.97\00:20:41.44 orientation growing up. 00:20:41.47\00:20:43.27 Okay. 00:20:43.30\00:20:44.67 I think I first felt my need in college, 00:20:44.71\00:20:47.71 going to school, away from home, 00:20:47.74\00:20:49.64 away from the support, 00:20:49.68\00:20:51.01 feeling a need for something more 00:20:51.05\00:20:52.38 and starting to search then. 00:20:52.41\00:20:55.75 While going to college, 00:20:55.78\00:20:57.19 I rent a room in a house with a lot of people 00:20:57.22\00:21:01.19 and they were selling drugs. 00:21:01.22\00:21:02.66 And so I had to get out of... that was raided 00:21:02.69\00:21:05.36 and that was one history I got to see a change. 00:21:05.39\00:21:09.20 What happened with that kind of lifestyle 00:21:09.23\00:21:12.77 I lived a year with the Moonies, 00:21:12.80\00:21:14.67 Reverend Moon, Sun Myung Moon 00:21:14.70\00:21:16.54 got to see what that was all about. 00:21:16.57\00:21:18.94 And as I started reading the scriptures 00:21:18.97\00:21:21.28 to see if what he's saying was really, 00:21:21.31\00:21:23.75 with what the Bible said. 00:21:23.78\00:21:26.72 Just as conviction that I needed to leave 00:21:26.75\00:21:28.48 got stronger and stronger, 00:21:28.52\00:21:29.85 and pretty soon I just said, "Hey, I got to go." 00:21:29.88\00:21:32.59 I prayed and fasted and asked, the Lord says, 00:21:32.62\00:21:35.56 "You know, Lord, you know, 00:21:35.59\00:21:36.93 isn't there a church that twists, 00:21:36.96\00:21:39.89 that doesn't twist the scripture 00:21:39.93\00:21:41.26 to fit their doctrine, 00:21:41.30\00:21:42.63 but twist their doctrine to fit the scripture." 00:21:42.66\00:21:45.30 And an answer to that prayer. 00:21:45.33\00:21:47.04 My mom said, "You know, Dave, 00:21:47.07\00:21:49.07 I talked to somebody and they said 00:21:49.10\00:21:50.44 that if you're interested in medicine, 00:21:50.51\00:21:51.84 you should visit the Adventist church 00:21:51.87\00:21:53.21 'cause they have churches all over the world." 00:21:53.24\00:21:54.84 I never heard of an Adventist Church. 00:21:54.88\00:21:56.75 I said, "Okay, I'll go visit." 00:21:56.78\00:21:58.15 So I went there and 9:30, 10 o'clock, 11:00, 00:21:58.18\00:22:01.55 nobody showed up. 00:22:01.58\00:22:02.92 I called my mom and said, "Mom, nobody showed up." 00:22:02.95\00:22:04.29 She says, "What, Dave, you got to go on Saturday, 00:22:04.32\00:22:06.22 can't go on Sunday." 00:22:06.25\00:22:07.66 You can be there. 00:22:07.69\00:22:09.26 So I got to meet them and then 00:22:09.29\00:22:11.63 through a long process 00:22:11.66\00:22:13.06 eventually came into the church. 00:22:13.09\00:22:14.66 Okay, so you went on and got your medical degree 00:22:14.70\00:22:17.80 and tell us a little bit about your service 00:22:17.83\00:22:20.57 as a medical doctor? 00:22:20.64\00:22:23.17 After residency at Kettering in Ohio, 00:22:23.20\00:22:27.38 my wife and I went immediately to Guam, 00:22:27.41\00:22:30.25 and we were able to settle out there for about eight years, 00:22:30.28\00:22:32.28 beautiful place. 00:22:32.31\00:22:34.32 But after World War II, 00:22:34.35\00:22:35.92 they didn't have diabetes or heart disease. 00:22:35.95\00:22:37.82 But after World War II, 00:22:37.85\00:22:39.19 they adopted American lifestyle. 00:22:39.22\00:22:40.56 And now diabetes, number one, 00:22:40.59\00:22:41.96 heart disease, number two problems. 00:22:41.99\00:22:44.16 So I was working as an internist there 00:22:44.23\00:22:47.30 in internal medicine, 00:22:47.33\00:22:48.66 but we set up an afterhours lifestyle program, 00:22:48.70\00:22:52.37 people would come after work 00:22:52.40\00:22:54.14 and they could come 'cause they're all local, 00:22:54.17\00:22:56.44 the island's only 30 miles by 15 miles wide, tiny place. 00:22:56.47\00:22:59.11 Yes, yes. 00:22:59.14\00:23:00.68 And they'd be, you know, they get a health nugget, 00:23:00.71\00:23:04.28 they get a cooking class, food and all and then, 00:23:04.31\00:23:08.35 and then they would go home for two weeks we do before 00:23:08.38\00:23:10.32 and after labs, and they would, they would do that very well. 00:23:10.39\00:23:14.49 And so we saw tremendous response... 00:23:14.52\00:23:17.23 Let me hit the pause button right there 00:23:17.26\00:23:18.79 'cause there's probably a lot of people 00:23:18.83\00:23:20.60 who don't really understand 00:23:20.63\00:23:22.33 what lifestyle is 00:23:22.36\00:23:23.77 when we're talking about lifestyle programs. 00:23:23.80\00:23:26.40 And when you said they did very well, 00:23:26.43\00:23:28.94 you're talking about diabetics and people with heart disease. 00:23:28.97\00:23:32.67 Who saw vast improvement because of dietary changes, 00:23:32.71\00:23:38.18 and that's what we're talking about here with lifestyle. 00:23:38.21\00:23:40.82 And what kind of diet were you suggesting? 00:23:40.85\00:23:44.19 Well, we do a plant-based diet, 00:23:44.22\00:23:46.86 eliminate the meat, the dairy, and the free oils 00:23:46.89\00:23:49.52 that was very effective in helping reduce blood sugars. 00:23:49.56\00:23:53.33 Blood sugars come down usually in three to four days. 00:23:53.40\00:23:55.53 Blood pressure was usually 00:23:55.56\00:23:56.90 kind of the last thing to change. 00:23:56.97\00:23:58.30 It was maybe one or two weeks down the road. 00:23:58.33\00:24:00.07 We do before and after lab draws 00:24:00.14\00:24:01.57 and see dramatic drops in cholesterol. 00:24:01.60\00:24:04.21 Weight would drop usually, the first week they would 00:24:04.24\00:24:07.98 maybe lose 8 to 10 pounds, but most of that was water. 00:24:08.01\00:24:11.11 Then after that it was about one to two pounds a week 00:24:11.15\00:24:13.55 and dramatic responses. 00:24:13.62\00:24:16.35 Yes. 00:24:16.38\00:24:17.72 So people, did you have anybody 00:24:17.75\00:24:19.22 that actually reversed their diabetes? 00:24:19.25\00:24:21.79 Yes, yes, many people. 00:24:21.82\00:24:23.63 We would be able to taper them off 00:24:23.66\00:24:25.43 their medications. 00:24:25.46\00:24:27.93 One case actually was in Oklahoma, 00:24:27.96\00:24:30.87 diabetic she was like 350 pounds 00:24:30.90\00:24:33.67 and 5 foot 3 and diabetic, 00:24:33.74\00:24:37.01 blind from her diabetes 00:24:37.04\00:24:38.84 and high blood pressure and all 00:24:38.87\00:24:41.88 and we shared these principles with her, 00:24:41.91\00:24:44.15 explained about insulin resistance 00:24:44.18\00:24:45.85 and plant-based diet, how it would work. 00:24:45.88\00:24:48.15 And she had a very supportive husband. 00:24:48.18\00:24:50.12 She did something totally unheard of. 00:24:50.19\00:24:52.69 Never dreamed you do. 00:24:52.72\00:24:54.06 She actually did what we asked her to do. 00:24:54.09\00:24:56.39 So it's pretty exciting. 00:24:56.42\00:24:58.23 In two years, she lost about a pound a week, 00:24:58.26\00:25:01.26 she lost about 100 pounds in a wheelchair, no exercise. 00:25:01.30\00:25:04.87 She was in a wheelchair, her knees are hurting, 00:25:04.90\00:25:07.67 blood sugars came down, 00:25:07.70\00:25:09.07 we were able to get her off her insulin about a year, 00:25:09.10\00:25:11.94 off her cholesterol medicines and a blood pressure medicines 00:25:11.97\00:25:14.28 we took, got her off those. 00:25:14.31\00:25:16.01 And as soon as she lost the weight, 00:25:16.04\00:25:17.85 the orthopedic surgeon said, 00:25:17.88\00:25:19.21 yeah, we can do surgery on her now, 00:25:19.25\00:25:20.62 her weight's down. 00:25:20.65\00:25:21.98 They replaced her knee and she started walking again. 00:25:22.02\00:25:23.79 Praise God. Praise God. 00:25:23.82\00:25:25.82 So you went from Guam to Oklahoma. 00:25:25.85\00:25:28.39 You were actually in the private practice 00:25:28.42\00:25:30.43 in Oklahoma. 00:25:30.46\00:25:31.79 How did you end up at Hartland? 00:25:31.83\00:25:34.20 Well, we worked at in Oklahoma for about eight years. 00:25:34.23\00:25:39.73 And we got called to another lifestyle center. 00:25:39.77\00:25:42.30 We worked there for about three years. 00:25:42.34\00:25:43.71 And then our parents were aging. 00:25:43.74\00:25:45.37 And so we came to our ancestral home, 00:25:45.41\00:25:47.68 which how I guess my ancestors came over in 1700s 00:25:47.71\00:25:51.45 from Austria and had a farm 00:25:51.48\00:25:54.15 and so we started taking care of my mom and dad. 00:25:54.22\00:25:56.82 He was a chemist for DuPont 00:25:56.89\00:25:59.02 and he's retired now and they passed away 00:25:59.05\00:26:03.06 and we started fixing up the farm 00:26:03.09\00:26:04.96 and trying to get a home office 00:26:04.99\00:26:06.59 to do lifestyle ministry out of our home. 00:26:06.63\00:26:09.73 And then I got a call from Dr. John Kelly inviting me 00:26:09.76\00:26:12.83 to come down and help out at Hartland. 00:26:12.87\00:26:15.07 They were about two and a half hours away. 00:26:15.10\00:26:17.01 So we would commute, 00:26:17.04\00:26:18.37 we'd see the patients do the histories 00:26:18.41\00:26:19.74 and physicals and then do the health cultures. 00:26:19.77\00:26:21.11 What year was this? 00:26:21.14\00:26:22.48 2013. 2013. 00:26:22.51\00:26:23.85 Okay. 00:26:23.88\00:26:25.21 So this is just about the time 00:26:25.25\00:26:26.58 all of this transition is taking place. 00:26:26.61\00:26:28.82 Definitely. It's around that time period. 00:26:28.85\00:26:30.19 All right. 00:26:30.22\00:26:31.55 And then when did you actually come on board? 00:26:31.59\00:26:34.29 Well, about 2014, probably. 00:26:34.32\00:26:38.26 We were there fairly consistently 00:26:38.29\00:26:40.80 seeing the patients, 00:26:40.83\00:26:42.16 we're there for much of the time 00:26:42.20\00:26:43.67 and then the time 00:26:43.70\00:26:45.03 that we're at home up in Maryland, 00:26:45.07\00:26:47.37 we do video conference, 00:26:47.44\00:26:48.77 we do this lectures over zoom conference. 00:26:48.80\00:26:50.61 And... 00:26:50.64\00:26:51.97 Okay, well, we're gonna come back and hit that 00:26:52.01\00:26:53.38 and, Rothy, I'm gonna save your story 00:26:53.41\00:26:55.78 because you don't wanna miss Rothy story 00:26:55.81\00:26:58.65 when he was living in a garbage dump. 00:26:58.68\00:27:01.78 But it's so good. 00:27:01.82\00:27:03.15 I'm gonna save it a little bit toward the last 00:27:03.18\00:27:04.85 as we talk about the missionary focus. 00:27:04.89\00:27:07.82 Let's look at, you brought a little video about Hartland. 00:27:07.86\00:27:12.56 We want to talk about all that Hartland is offering. 00:27:12.59\00:27:16.77 So we're gonna start off with this video. 00:27:16.80\00:27:19.27 Hartland College is a different kind of school. 00:27:19.30\00:27:22.04 It's a 00:28:01.74\00:28:04.45 who make a commitment 00:28:04.48\00:28:05.81 to serve as missionaries 00:28:05.85\00:28:07.32 in their country of origin 00:28:07.35\00:28:08.82 for at least three years upon graduation. 00:28:08.85\00:28:11.85 Each year a number of students are able to enroll for classes. 00:28:11.89\00:28:15.66 Thanks to the investment made to MTF by people like you. 00:28:15.69\00:28:19.69 Hi, my name is Lanardo Rolle, and I'm from the Bahamas 00:28:19.73\00:28:22.83 and I came to Hartland 00:28:22.86\00:28:24.20 to study the Health Ministry major, 00:28:24.27\00:28:25.63 so I can return back to my country 00:28:25.67\00:28:27.34 and help those in need. 00:28:27.37\00:28:29.07 I'd like to say thank you to the donors 00:28:29.10\00:28:31.34 of the Missionary Training Fund. 00:28:31.37\00:28:33.38 You have made it possible for me to come here to study. 00:28:33.41\00:28:35.81 Thank you very much. 00:28:35.84\00:28:37.18 Hello, my name is Alyona Vlasova, 00:28:37.25\00:28:39.31 and I'm student from Russia 00:28:39.35\00:28:41.15 and I'm studying the media ministry 00:28:41.18\00:28:42.98 at Hartland College. 00:28:43.02\00:28:44.35 I came to Hartland to discover how can I develop my art skills 00:28:44.39\00:28:50.13 and media was a great option for that. 00:28:50.16\00:28:53.73 I think MTF for helping me to study at Hartland College. 00:28:53.80\00:28:57.67 My name is Kevin Condori. 00:28:57.70\00:28:59.53 I am from Argentina. 00:28:59.57\00:29:01.30 And my major is pastoral evangelism. 00:29:01.34\00:29:03.74 The reason why I came to Hartland 00:29:03.81\00:29:06.11 is because Hartland train missionaries 00:29:06.14\00:29:08.54 and I wanna be a missionary. 00:29:08.58\00:29:10.88 And thanks to MTF, my dreams are coming true. 00:29:10.95\00:29:14.78 Hello my name is Soriya Sem, and I came from Cambodia 00:29:14.82\00:29:18.82 and I came here to Hartland to take education major 00:29:18.85\00:29:21.79 and MTF 00:29:29.06\00:29:31.53 that I can be here because they sponsored me. 00:29:31.57\00:29:34.94 You are invited to help 00:29:34.97\00:29:36.37 transform the life of a young person 00:29:36.40\00:29:38.34 and those they will touch with the love of Jesus 00:29:38.37\00:29:41.31 by investing in practical evangelistic education 00:29:41.34\00:29:44.58 for a student who wants to be a missionary, 00:29:44.61\00:29:47.68 but cannot afford tuition at Hartland College. 00:29:47.72\00:29:50.79 Visit our donation page 00:29:50.82\00:29:52.45 to help more young people study at Hartland College 00:29:52.49\00:29:55.79 through MTF funding. 00:29:55.82\00:29:57.83 Thank you for your support. 00:29:57.86\00:30:00.53 You know, it's a beautiful location here. 00:30:07.24\00:30:09.57 And certainly there's, they offer so much. 00:30:09.60\00:30:12.37 But we just wanted to emphasize 00:30:12.41\00:30:15.01 because of the changes that have happened at Hartland. 00:30:15.04\00:30:18.48 They are now members of OCI, 00:30:18.51\00:30:20.82 which is Outpost Centers International. 00:30:20.85\00:30:24.95 And Steven Grabiner, who is President of OCI 00:30:24.99\00:30:30.33 actually serves on your board now, 00:30:30.36\00:30:32.73 as does Elder Jay Gallimore, who is someone 00:30:32.76\00:30:37.57 who's recently joined your board. 00:30:37.60\00:30:39.70 And you all know 00:30:39.73\00:30:41.20 what a wonderful man of God Jay is. 00:30:41.24\00:30:43.61 So we see that just the board of directors, 00:30:43.64\00:30:48.11 the whole leadership, the focus has changed. 00:30:48.14\00:30:51.41 Tell us a little more about the college? 00:30:51.45\00:30:53.28 We thank the Lord for that transition, 00:30:53.31\00:30:55.05 which was led by His providence. 00:30:55.08\00:30:57.42 I remember early in 2011, three months 00:30:57.49\00:31:00.19 after I was in this position of responsibility 00:31:00.26\00:31:03.63 that Dr. Agatha Thrash came by, 00:31:03.66\00:31:05.69 and she wanted to visit with me, 00:31:05.73\00:31:07.20 she was still alive. 00:31:07.23\00:31:08.56 She has been a very influential person 00:31:08.60\00:31:10.17 in my life and our family. 00:31:10.20\00:31:12.00 And she said, "Hartland is a wonderful ministry 00:31:12.03\00:31:15.30 serving young people, 00:31:15.34\00:31:16.84 but it would be so much more effective 00:31:16.91\00:31:18.64 if it was working 00:31:18.67\00:31:20.01 with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. 00:31:20.08\00:31:21.88 Please pray about this 00:31:21.91\00:31:23.38 and see what you can do about it." 00:31:23.45\00:31:24.95 Bless her heart. 00:31:24.98\00:31:26.31 And shortly afterwards, 00:31:26.35\00:31:27.68 Amazing Facts evangelist came to visit us. 00:31:27.72\00:31:30.09 And he said the very same things. 00:31:30.12\00:31:32.25 So I started praying about this 00:31:32.29\00:31:33.86 and shortly afterwards was the encounter 00:31:33.89\00:31:35.82 that I mentioned previously. 00:31:35.86\00:31:37.63 So that, you know... 00:31:37.66\00:31:38.99 And I forgot to mention earlier when you were talking 00:31:39.03\00:31:41.20 about Elder Wilson sat down next to you, 00:31:41.23\00:31:43.67 for those of you 00:31:43.70\00:31:45.03 who are not Seventh-day Adventist Christians, 00:31:45.07\00:31:47.24 Elder Wilson is the President of the General Conference. 00:31:47.27\00:31:52.24 And I mean, that's the World Conference 00:31:52.27\00:31:55.01 for the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:31:55.04\00:31:57.25 and we have like 19 million plus members now. 00:31:57.28\00:32:01.08 So go ahead. 00:32:01.12\00:32:03.39 So Elder Wilson encouraged us to dialogue at all levels, 00:32:03.42\00:32:06.49 which we were doing, we were dialoguing with OCI, 00:32:06.52\00:32:09.19 with ASI, with our local conference, 00:32:09.22\00:32:11.76 with Elder Bill Miller, 00:32:11.79\00:32:13.29 we've had several conversations, 00:32:13.33\00:32:15.83 just trying to change the negative perception 00:32:15.86\00:32:19.00 that was there because of a past history. 00:32:19.03\00:32:22.14 And it has been a great blessing 00:32:22.17\00:32:24.41 to be able to show our local churches, 00:32:24.44\00:32:27.84 local conference, and union and so forth 00:32:27.88\00:32:31.08 that our focus has changed. 00:32:31.11\00:32:34.12 And it has changed in a positive way, 00:32:34.15\00:32:36.08 in a positive way. 00:32:36.12\00:32:37.49 We're not straying away 00:32:37.52\00:32:38.85 from the fundamental biblical beliefs 00:32:38.89\00:32:40.56 that bring us together. 00:32:40.59\00:32:41.92 But our focus on Christ's righteousness, 00:32:41.96\00:32:44.43 and on serving the world church 00:32:44.46\00:32:46.23 in a supportive way has definitely changed. 00:32:46.26\00:32:48.43 Amen. Glory to God. 00:32:48.46\00:32:50.10 So tell us a little bit more 00:32:50.17\00:32:51.53 'cause the video went by so fast, 00:32:51.57\00:32:53.37 you have the college, you have the lifestyle, 00:32:53.44\00:32:57.11 you've got so many different programs. 00:32:57.14\00:32:58.84 Tell us about that, 00:32:58.87\00:33:00.21 kind of elucidate on that a little? 00:33:00.28\00:33:02.21 Yes, our two main programs on our campus are the college, 00:33:02.24\00:33:06.82 the missionary college and the lifestyle center. 00:33:06.85\00:33:08.98 We do run a number of other programs, 00:33:09.02\00:33:11.49 we have a total of 18 departments 00:33:11.52\00:33:13.76 that range from a day academy, 00:33:13.79\00:33:15.82 evangelistic magazine, a farm, a youth camp 00:33:15.86\00:33:20.23 that goes once a year in the month of June 00:33:20.30\00:33:22.50 and great exciting things. 00:33:22.53\00:33:24.17 But the missionary college 00:33:24.20\00:33:25.53 and the lifestyle center are our main focuses. 00:33:25.57\00:33:28.44 With the missionary college, we also found something 00:33:28.47\00:33:30.94 that has led us to a major change recently, 00:33:30.97\00:33:34.11 which is that now we are seeking accreditation. 00:33:34.18\00:33:36.98 And the reason for that is because 00:33:37.05\00:33:38.81 we want to equip our youth to be able to serve. 00:33:38.85\00:33:43.28 And in our modern society, you have to be licensed 00:33:43.32\00:33:46.35 to be able to perform in the medical professions, 00:33:46.39\00:33:49.46 even as an educator you have to be certified. 00:33:49.49\00:33:51.96 So we found that this was hindering 00:33:51.99\00:33:54.03 the effectiveness of our graduates 00:33:54.10\00:33:56.80 in terms of the sphere of influence 00:33:56.87\00:33:59.17 where they could work at. 00:33:59.20\00:34:00.57 So in October of last year, our board voted unanimously 00:34:00.64\00:34:05.37 to seek accreditation. 00:34:05.41\00:34:06.78 So please pray for that. 00:34:06.81\00:34:09.51 I know that a lot of people see accreditation 00:34:09.54\00:34:11.65 as synonymous of compromise. 00:34:11.68\00:34:13.52 But it doesn't have to be that way, it doesn't. 00:34:13.55\00:34:15.08 You know, Weimar was just accredited by the same people 00:34:15.12\00:34:19.52 who gave accreditation to Harvard University, 00:34:19.55\00:34:24.76 and, you know what? 00:34:24.79\00:34:26.13 Stanford. Oh, Stanford. 00:34:26.16\00:34:27.50 And you know what? 00:34:27.53\00:34:28.86 The people who came out to do the accreditation, 00:34:28.90\00:34:32.33 marveled at the gospel influence 00:34:32.37\00:34:36.50 in how they worked in the community and said, 00:34:36.54\00:34:39.31 "You all really practice what you preach." 00:34:39.34\00:34:41.68 And I know you all do as well. 00:34:41.71\00:34:43.55 So I don't see it as a compromise at all. 00:34:43.58\00:34:46.41 I see it as some way 00:34:46.45\00:34:48.62 that we can expand our influence 00:34:48.65\00:34:52.02 in many areas. 00:34:52.05\00:34:53.99 And I just have to give a shout out 00:34:54.06\00:34:56.83 if I imagine Patti Barnes, 00:34:56.86\00:34:58.96 is she the director of your Midwifery program? 00:34:58.99\00:35:01.63 She is the director of our Midwifery program. 00:35:01.66\00:35:03.87 And we're so thankful as well for the divine design programs 00:35:03.90\00:35:08.57 that she's, you know, 00:35:08.60\00:35:09.94 the host of those programs and have been a blessing. 00:35:10.01\00:35:12.27 And that's one of the unique programs 00:35:12.31\00:35:13.98 that we have at Hartland 00:35:14.01\00:35:15.34 that also was crucial in seeking accreditation 00:35:15.38\00:35:19.48 because midwives need to be accredited because that's, 00:35:19.51\00:35:23.39 basically it's a clinical practice 00:35:23.42\00:35:24.92 even though it's not done at homes. 00:35:24.95\00:35:26.96 Well, we just Patti, you know, 00:35:26.99\00:35:28.56 we love you here and divine design, 00:35:28.59\00:35:31.06 if you haven't seen it yet it is, 00:35:31.09\00:35:33.53 we get calls from doctors and people, clinics. 00:35:33.60\00:35:39.43 People love that. 00:35:39.47\00:35:40.84 I mean, I don't know how anybody, 00:35:40.87\00:35:42.97 the first time I saw a couple of episodes, 00:35:43.00\00:35:45.31 she sent us samples. 00:35:45.34\00:35:46.88 And I said, "I don't know 00:35:46.91\00:35:48.24 how anybody couldn't believe in God 00:35:48.28\00:35:50.55 as the creator as she takes you 00:35:50.58\00:35:52.78 through the development of the baby in the womb 00:35:52.81\00:35:56.28 and all of the things that God is done." 00:35:56.32\00:35:58.85 She's an amazing person, we love her. 00:35:58.89\00:36:01.49 So your school, 00:36:01.52\00:36:04.16 one of the things that you have is the pastoral evangelism, 00:36:04.23\00:36:08.96 tell us about the missionary? 00:36:09.00\00:36:12.67 I guess scholarships that you have? 00:36:12.70\00:36:16.00 The first thing I would like to emphasize is that 00:36:16.04\00:36:18.21 every single student, 00:36:18.24\00:36:19.87 no matter what major they take, 00:36:19.91\00:36:22.24 will receive deep biblical knowledge. 00:36:22.28\00:36:25.38 Amen. And also outreach experiences. 00:36:25.41\00:36:27.68 So all of our students, regardless of their major, 00:36:27.72\00:36:30.09 will know how to study the Bible, 00:36:30.12\00:36:32.09 how to give Bible studies, how to knock on doors, 00:36:32.12\00:36:34.59 how to be medical missionaries, comprehensive health ministry. 00:36:34.62\00:36:38.26 You know, they're going to be developed in all those areas. 00:36:38.29\00:36:41.10 On a weekly basis they have to do outreach. 00:36:41.13\00:36:43.70 On a weekly basis they're studying the Bible 00:36:43.77\00:36:45.87 as one of the core courses in their program. 00:36:45.90\00:36:49.64 Amen. 00:36:49.67\00:36:51.01 And then they have their academics 00:36:51.04\00:36:52.37 in the specific field where they're being trained. 00:36:52.41\00:36:54.38 Now, the Missionary Training Fund is a scholarship 00:36:54.41\00:36:56.88 that is offered to young people 00:36:56.95\00:36:58.65 who can't afford to pay tuition is a 50% scholarship, 00:36:58.68\00:37:03.22 but the other part they can pay 00:37:03.25\00:37:04.59 as they're participating of the vocational training. 00:37:04.62\00:37:08.39 And through that program, 00:37:08.42\00:37:10.06 students like Rothy can come and be blessed 00:37:10.13\00:37:13.26 so they can go back and spread the gospel 00:37:13.29\00:37:16.46 in their home country, 00:37:16.50\00:37:17.83 which goes perfectly well with our vision, 00:37:17.87\00:37:20.14 which is Hartland alumni serving in every nation 00:37:20.17\00:37:23.51 in support of the mission and ministry 00:37:23.54\00:37:26.14 of the Seventh-day Adventist Church 00:37:26.17\00:37:28.01 to prepare a world for Christ's Second Coming. 00:37:28.04\00:37:30.75 Only that way, by training young people to go back 00:37:30.78\00:37:34.22 and share the gospel can we further 00:37:34.25\00:37:36.35 and fulfill that vision. 00:37:36.38\00:37:37.89 All right, Rothy, I know that you were born 00:37:37.92\00:37:42.39 into a large Buddhist family. 00:37:42.42\00:37:45.36 And when you were just a 13 was it 00:37:45.39\00:37:48.06 that your mother and your parents lost their job 00:37:48.10\00:37:50.87 and you went out on your own 00:37:50.90\00:37:52.73 because they couldn't support you. 00:37:52.77\00:37:54.67 You ended up at a garbage dump. 00:37:54.70\00:37:56.74 Tell us about that? 00:37:56.81\00:37:58.81 Yeah. 00:37:58.84\00:38:00.18 So first I wanna tell you about little bit my background. 00:38:00.21\00:38:03.55 So I grew up with a big family 00:38:03.58\00:38:06.35 and also with a Buddhist family. 00:38:06.38\00:38:09.15 And I remember that time when I was like 13, 12, 00:38:09.18\00:38:12.42 or 13 years old, 00:38:12.45\00:38:13.86 I left my family because that time my parents 00:38:13.89\00:38:16.59 they lost their job 00:38:16.62\00:38:17.99 and my family getting poor and nobody support the family. 00:38:18.03\00:38:21.43 And this is in Cambodia? 00:38:21.46\00:38:22.93 Yeah, in Cambodia. 00:38:22.96\00:38:24.30 So I decided to leave home not because I hate them 00:38:24.33\00:38:26.57 but because I wanted to help them 00:38:26.60\00:38:28.64 even though I'm still young. 00:38:28.67\00:38:30.31 So, and I decided to go 00:38:30.34\00:38:34.28 because I didn't know where I'm going 00:38:34.31\00:38:35.91 and what I'm going to do because 00:38:35.94\00:38:37.75 I just wanna go and find some jobs to do 00:38:37.78\00:38:40.72 so they can get some little monies 00:38:40.75\00:38:42.95 to help my parents. 00:38:42.98\00:38:44.32 So the way that I live, the way that it is, 00:38:44.35\00:38:47.56 I just live on the street and I didn't buy one time 00:38:47.59\00:38:51.49 when I get really hungry because I'm so hungry 00:38:51.53\00:38:55.26 that time so I don't know what I'm gonna do so 00:38:55.30\00:38:57.57 I just go to the trashcan and get some food 00:38:57.60\00:39:01.97 and some things to eat from that. 00:39:02.00\00:39:04.21 And at night I don't know 00:39:04.24\00:39:06.14 because in Cambodia is like rain a lot 00:39:06.17\00:39:09.31 so I don't know where I'm gonna sleep 00:39:09.34\00:39:10.85 so I just live under the tree and some time I sweat. 00:39:10.88\00:39:14.92 And I just live there. 00:39:14.95\00:39:18.42 Which you ended up at the garbage dump 00:39:18.45\00:39:20.79 and some Korean missionaries 00:39:20.86\00:39:23.16 they were Seventh-day Adventist Christians 00:39:23.19\00:39:26.23 who were missionaries from Korea 00:39:26.26\00:39:28.96 and they came to the garbage dump 00:39:29.00\00:39:31.57 and you met them tell us what happened after you met? 00:39:31.60\00:39:34.64 Yeah. 00:39:34.67\00:39:36.00 So I spent like five to six years 00:39:36.04\00:39:38.34 in the garbage dump. 00:39:38.37\00:39:39.77 So I lived there not like many people, 00:39:39.81\00:39:43.11 many kids they lived there because a lot of kids 00:39:43.14\00:39:46.35 they left their family 00:39:46.38\00:39:47.78 and also some time their family dies 00:39:47.82\00:39:50.39 so they just go there and stay there. 00:39:50.42\00:39:52.19 So I'm one of them. 00:39:52.22\00:39:53.69 So we live there like mostly 00:39:53.76\00:39:57.73 we get up very early 00:39:57.76\00:39:59.09 because all the truck they go there 00:39:59.13\00:40:01.46 to dump the trash in that like that. 00:40:01.50\00:40:04.77 So around 1 or 2 o'clock midnight still 00:40:04.80\00:40:08.60 need to get up early to collect all the can 00:40:08.64\00:40:11.71 and all the plastic to sell. 00:40:11.74\00:40:13.68 And I remember a time 00:40:13.71\00:40:15.84 I get like less than $1 per day. 00:40:15.88\00:40:18.85 So it's not a lot of money 00:40:18.88\00:40:20.62 but because the thing is I need to 00:40:20.65\00:40:23.28 and that money I didn't spend it all, 00:40:23.32\00:40:25.29 I just keep all of them 00:40:25.32\00:40:26.65 to save it until the end of the month, 00:40:26.69\00:40:28.79 so that I can send it to my family. 00:40:28.82\00:40:30.63 Amen. Oh, how precious. 00:40:30.66\00:40:32.39 The food and also the place that I stay, 00:40:32.43\00:40:34.60 like I told you already that the food that I get 00:40:35.63\00:40:38.50 from the trash can and eat it 00:40:38.53\00:40:39.93 and also the place I stayed 00:40:39.97\00:40:42.00 and have like a big apartment or something to stay, 00:40:42.04\00:40:45.47 I just make my own, 00:40:45.51\00:40:46.98 my own like my own small cottage to stay. 00:40:47.01\00:40:49.81 So I make from the bamboo stick 00:40:49.84\00:40:51.45 and also the plastic I sew to make a roof 00:40:51.48\00:40:54.22 and I stayed under it. 00:40:54.25\00:40:55.65 Did t the roof stay up during the heavy rains though? 00:40:55.68\00:40:58.09 As this day there and if the heavy rain come 00:40:58.12\00:41:00.69 which I have to find a big tree. 00:41:00.76\00:41:03.56 And they have the hole to that 00:41:03.63\00:41:05.39 I can go inside the tree and sleep there. 00:41:05.43\00:41:07.13 Okay. 00:41:07.20\00:41:08.53 So when you met this missionary, 00:41:08.56\00:41:10.07 what did he say to you? 00:41:10.10\00:41:11.83 And he told me that, "You wanna go to study?" 00:41:11.87\00:41:14.50 I said, "Yes, I wanna go to study." 00:41:14.54\00:41:15.90 But I told him that about I told him about my family 00:41:15.94\00:41:18.51 and also by myself. 00:41:18.54\00:41:19.87 And then he said that, 00:41:19.91\00:41:21.24 "Don't worry I'll pay for your school and everything. 00:41:21.28\00:41:24.55 Just come and follow me." 00:41:24.58\00:41:25.98 So I just follow him without knowing 00:41:26.01\00:41:28.62 I didn't know who is he but I just go and follow him. 00:41:28.65\00:41:31.25 Glory to God that he was a true Christian. 00:41:31.29\00:41:33.76 So you ended up graduating from high school. 00:41:33.79\00:41:37.93 How did you go from high school in Cambodia 00:41:37.96\00:41:41.80 to Hartland in Virginia? 00:41:41.83\00:41:46.00 So first of all, I wanna thank you 00:41:46.03\00:41:47.37 for the MTF like the fund, 00:41:47.44\00:41:49.57 the scholarship from the school. 00:41:49.60\00:41:51.31 And also the thing that I know about... 00:41:51.34\00:41:53.07 And that's MTF stands for what? 00:41:53.11\00:41:55.61 Missionary... Missionary Training Fund. 00:41:55.64\00:41:56.98 Missionary Training Fund, okay. Yeah. 00:41:57.05\00:41:58.81 So I get that fund from the school. 00:41:58.85\00:42:01.42 And also, before that I know one of my friend, 00:42:01.45\00:42:04.29 she's from Cambodia, 00:42:04.32\00:42:05.75 and also I'd have another friend from Korea 00:42:05.79\00:42:08.89 said that her parents used to go to Cambodia 00:42:08.92\00:42:11.86 to make like a mission trip there. 00:42:11.89\00:42:13.80 So I used to be a translator 00:42:13.83\00:42:15.33 and also have the missionary work there 00:42:15.36\00:42:18.50 in Cambodia. 00:42:18.53\00:42:19.87 So they introduced me about 00:42:19.90\00:42:21.44 Hartland or something like that. 00:42:21.47\00:42:22.80 And they told me that just keep praying about that 00:42:22.84\00:42:24.94 because they want to have me 00:42:24.97\00:42:27.51 to come to studying in Hartland. 00:42:27.58\00:42:30.55 So when you got to Hartland, Rothy, did you speak English? 00:42:30.58\00:42:35.55 I speak a little bit. 00:42:35.58\00:42:36.92 A little bit. Well, you speak very well now. 00:42:36.99\00:42:39.72 And I'm excited you have two more years, right? 00:42:39.75\00:42:43.16 And you will graduate. 00:42:43.19\00:42:45.06 He is studying the pastoral evangelism. 00:42:45.09\00:42:48.03 And Rothy will be returning to Cambodia as a pastor, 00:42:48.06\00:42:53.84 as an evangelist, to spread the gospel 00:42:53.87\00:42:57.67 and that is the mission of Hartland, 00:42:57.71\00:43:02.28 but, Rothy, I have to say, 00:43:02.31\00:43:05.08 you know, when I read that scripture 00:43:05.11\00:43:07.65 about God is saying do not 00:43:07.68\00:43:11.22 just don't dwell on the past. 00:43:11.25\00:43:12.92 But look at what I've done this new beginning, 00:43:12.95\00:43:15.56 He's doing a new thing. 00:43:15.59\00:43:17.53 I cannot imagine at 13 years old 00:43:17.56\00:43:20.90 living in a garbage dump and trying to, 00:43:20.93\00:43:24.27 not only were you having to make your own way 00:43:24.30\00:43:26.67 but saving what little money 00:43:26.74\00:43:28.27 you could make to send to your family. 00:43:28.30\00:43:30.51 You must have felt like you'd gone to heaven 00:43:30.54\00:43:33.61 when you arrived in beautiful Virginia 00:43:33.68\00:43:35.88 and walked and saw that mansion. 00:43:35.91\00:43:38.25 What was that like for you when you first arrived? 00:43:38.28\00:43:41.85 Yeah, absolutely, it's like a heaven for me 00:43:41.88\00:43:43.92 because I never live in a big apartment 00:43:43.99\00:43:46.05 like because in Hartland they have beautiful dorm, 00:43:46.09\00:43:50.33 and beautiful people, and also beautiful campus. 00:43:50.36\00:43:53.33 And I feel like very 00:43:53.40\00:43:54.73 because Hartland give me like more, 00:43:54.76\00:43:56.56 more like a family 00:43:56.60\00:43:58.27 because I left my home is like almost 10 years. 00:43:58.30\00:44:02.07 So I never feel like love for my family, 00:44:02.10\00:44:05.37 like carry something like that. 00:44:05.41\00:44:06.78 But when it comes to Hartland, 00:44:06.81\00:44:08.14 people, they are so nice, and they are caring, 00:44:08.18\00:44:11.45 and they are loving. 00:44:11.48\00:44:12.81 And I wanna thanks God for that. 00:44:12.85\00:44:14.58 Amen. 00:44:14.62\00:44:15.95 That's what he says, 00:44:15.98\00:44:17.32 "I will even make rivers in the desert." 00:44:17.39\00:44:18.89 Right? 00:44:18.92\00:44:20.26 And in talking with Rothy, I was asking him 00:44:20.29\00:44:22.99 and what specific type of work do you want to do 00:44:23.02\00:44:25.76 when you go back to Cambodia? 00:44:25.79\00:44:27.63 And his answer really, really surprised me. 00:44:27.66\00:44:30.77 I would like Rothy to share it because he said, 00:44:30.80\00:44:33.34 "I want to serve my family." 00:44:33.37\00:44:35.14 And I said, "Your family?" 00:44:35.17\00:44:36.71 He was referring to those people 00:44:36.74\00:44:38.61 that he left behind in the dump, 00:44:38.64\00:44:41.01 the garbage dump. 00:44:41.04\00:44:42.41 He wants to reach out to them. 00:44:42.44\00:44:44.15 You will make me cry. Yes. 00:44:44.18\00:44:46.35 So yeah, they are my family as well. 00:44:46.38\00:44:48.85 Because as I remember that a lot of kids there 00:44:48.88\00:44:53.22 they left their parents and also they feel like... 00:44:53.25\00:44:55.79 Oh, Rothy, it's precious. 00:44:55.82\00:44:57.16 They lost their, I mean, sometimes they feel like 00:44:57.23\00:45:00.00 nobody care about them. 00:45:00.03\00:45:01.36 Yeah. 00:45:01.40\00:45:02.73 But because I am one of them, it can feel like 00:45:02.76\00:45:04.20 I have that kind of burden 00:45:04.27\00:45:05.60 because I can see how much they need 00:45:05.63\00:45:07.90 and how much they need somebody to lead, 00:45:07.94\00:45:11.07 to care something like that. 00:45:11.11\00:45:12.51 So this is my vision is that when I finish at Hartland, 00:45:12.54\00:45:15.71 I'll go back to Cambodia. 00:45:15.74\00:45:17.45 I will become the real family for them. 00:45:17.48\00:45:21.05 If possibility I will make some a small school like a small, 00:45:21.08\00:45:25.75 like yeah, like a small schools to open it up 00:45:25.79\00:45:28.26 for them to come and to study and also, 00:45:28.29\00:45:31.93 I will provide them like food 00:45:31.96\00:45:34.43 and some place to stay for them is like, 00:45:34.46\00:45:36.67 I kind of like, 00:45:36.70\00:45:38.03 that's my real burden for them as well. 00:45:38.07\00:45:39.93 God bless you. 00:45:39.97\00:45:41.30 One of the most important things in life is hope. 00:45:41.34\00:45:44.44 And that's one thing that you're able to take back. 00:45:44.47\00:45:47.38 You know, I came from where you are today. 00:45:47.41\00:45:51.35 And, you know, because of only the way 00:45:51.38\00:45:54.72 the mystery of God works. 00:45:54.75\00:45:56.89 He led me through all this 00:45:56.92\00:45:58.95 and to the mansion here on earth. 00:45:58.99\00:46:01.46 Just imagine what it's gonna be 00:46:01.49\00:46:02.96 like whenever we get home in heaven. 00:46:02.99\00:46:06.46 He's promised us that He's working now 00:46:06.49\00:46:09.66 to fashion a mansion for us. 00:46:09.70\00:46:13.17 That's such a precious story. 00:46:13.20\00:46:14.74 I mean, I hear so many wonderful stories. 00:46:14.77\00:46:18.34 I usually don't break out in tears, 00:46:18.37\00:46:20.38 but that was very unexpected, very precious. 00:46:20.41\00:46:23.85 Dave, we're getting down 00:46:23.88\00:46:25.75 to the last few minutes of the program 00:46:25.78\00:46:27.85 and we want to hear about the lifestyle program 00:46:27.88\00:46:30.79 because I know you're running 12 programs a year. 00:46:30.82\00:46:33.96 They've run a lifestyle program every month. 00:46:33.99\00:46:37.13 Tell us about that? 00:46:37.16\00:46:40.00 Well, we treat a lot of the common problems 00:46:40.03\00:46:43.57 like diabetes, hypertension, 00:46:43.60\00:46:45.30 weight, reversing heart disease, 00:46:45.33\00:46:47.24 those are fairly consistently responsive. 00:46:47.27\00:46:50.14 We also have a lot of cancer patients 00:46:50.21\00:46:52.17 and for those patients, 00:46:52.21\00:46:53.71 we try to strengthen the immune system 00:46:53.78\00:46:55.61 with vegan diet, 00:46:55.64\00:46:58.15 eliminating the animal proteins. 00:46:58.18\00:46:59.95 China study showed animal proteins 00:47:00.02\00:47:01.58 can turn on cancer growth. 00:47:01.62\00:47:04.55 We do a lot of juicing, 00:47:04.59\00:47:06.32 getting a lot of phytochemicals. 00:47:06.35\00:47:08.09 Gerson since the 30s and 40s has used juicing 00:47:08.12\00:47:10.93 to help strengthen immune system 00:47:10.96\00:47:12.29 to fight cancers effectively. 00:47:12.33\00:47:14.66 We also do, of course, the exercise, 00:47:14.70\00:47:16.50 we do hydrotherapy, 00:47:16.53\00:47:18.37 where we bring up the body temperature 00:47:18.40\00:47:20.87 to simulate a fever, turns out fevers 00:47:20.94\00:47:23.24 turn on your immune system and help you fight cancer. 00:47:23.27\00:47:26.04 God put it there for a reason 00:47:26.07\00:47:27.51 to protect us in this fallen world. 00:47:27.58\00:47:30.75 And so we do fever treatments. 00:47:30.78\00:47:33.82 It was used successfully to treat neurosyphilis, 00:47:33.85\00:47:36.45 the turn of the century. 00:47:36.48\00:47:37.89 They had about a 33% success rate 00:47:37.92\00:47:40.46 by inducing fevers 00:47:40.49\00:47:41.92 and people paralyzed from syphilis. 00:47:41.96\00:47:44.56 In fact, the fellow got the Nobel Prize 00:47:44.59\00:47:46.43 for doing this Wagner-Jauregg in 1927, 00:47:46.46\00:47:49.03 using fever treatments for syphilis, 00:47:49.06\00:47:52.23 and it is now used in an alternative form. 00:47:52.27\00:47:55.34 MRIs are now localizing tumors 00:47:55.37\00:47:58.61 locally and microwaves are used to heat up the tumor locally. 00:47:58.64\00:48:02.51 But we can also do it with whole body hyperthermia as well 00:48:02.54\00:48:05.81 with just simple bathtub in your own home. 00:48:05.85\00:48:08.85 We like to train people how to do this, 00:48:08.88\00:48:11.69 not just at Hartland but at home. 00:48:11.72\00:48:13.56 So they can continue the process 00:48:13.59\00:48:15.06 when they return home. 00:48:15.09\00:48:17.63 And do you have students, 00:48:17.66\00:48:19.03 I mean, you do some one year certificates, 00:48:19.06\00:48:21.00 you're teaching some of these things. 00:48:21.03\00:48:22.60 So your students can actually be part of your staff 00:48:22.63\00:48:26.10 and working with people 00:48:26.13\00:48:27.47 who are coming for the lifestyle? 00:48:27.54\00:48:28.87 They are part of the program. 00:48:28.90\00:48:30.34 They do a lot of the work 00:48:30.41\00:48:32.14 and they get to learn the process. 00:48:32.17\00:48:34.98 We also do intravenous vitamin C 00:48:35.01\00:48:37.05 which Linus Pauling used in 1978, 00:48:37.08\00:48:39.48 to prolong terminal cancer patients 00:48:39.51\00:48:41.88 average lifespan of 50 days to over 300 days 00:48:41.92\00:48:45.32 with just intravenous vitamin C. 00:48:45.35\00:48:47.66 And we also use ozone therapy, 00:48:47.69\00:48:49.96 which has been shown to increase the amount of ATP 00:48:50.03\00:48:54.13 that the cells can produce. 00:48:54.20\00:48:55.96 ATP is the high energy molecule, 00:48:56.00\00:48:58.47 which cells used to do all the work 00:48:58.50\00:49:00.24 whether it's contracting a muscle 00:49:00.27\00:49:01.60 or sending a nerve signal 00:49:01.64\00:49:02.97 or making proteins in the liver. 00:49:03.00\00:49:05.04 So those are things that we're using at Hartland 00:49:05.07\00:49:07.94 in addition to the simple cures 00:49:07.98\00:49:10.08 to try to accelerate the healing process 00:49:10.15\00:49:13.01 for cancers. 00:49:13.05\00:49:14.38 And I've seen miraculous results, 00:49:14.42\00:49:16.35 especially with cancer patients, 00:49:16.38\00:49:18.02 many of them responding very well to the program. 00:49:18.05\00:49:20.26 Praise God. How exciting. 00:49:20.29\00:49:22.62 So you have been, you came in 2011, 00:49:22.66\00:49:26.33 what are some of the future things 00:49:26.36\00:49:28.00 for Hartland? 00:49:28.03\00:49:29.36 Some of the future things that we have for Hartland, 00:49:29.40\00:49:31.57 you know, as the Lord is opening these opportunities, 00:49:31.60\00:49:34.14 as I mentioned before, 00:49:34.17\00:49:35.50 we're in the accrediting process, 00:49:35.54\00:49:36.91 we're in the early stages, that is a big task. 00:49:36.94\00:49:41.14 But the Lord is opening doors and that scenario 00:49:41.18\00:49:43.45 where our viewers can help us to be able to achieve that. 00:49:43.48\00:49:48.08 Just recently, I was at Weimar visiting with them, 00:49:48.12\00:49:51.05 learning from their experience. 00:49:51.09\00:49:52.52 We want to cooperate as sister institutions 00:49:52.55\00:49:56.83 in this mission of education. 00:49:56.86\00:49:58.73 And they were sharing with me some the challenges they had, 00:49:58.76\00:50:00.90 how the Lord brought them through, 00:50:00.93\00:50:02.43 and, you know, some of the costs involved 00:50:02.46\00:50:04.43 with that whole process. 00:50:04.47\00:50:06.00 So that's a major goal. 00:50:06.03\00:50:07.37 We also have a beautiful campus 00:50:07.44\00:50:09.10 and we want to turn that campus into a school itself, 00:50:09.14\00:50:12.51 a lot of outdoor activities, 00:50:12.54\00:50:14.21 we wanted to turn our forests into a place 00:50:14.28\00:50:17.68 where people can visit 00:50:17.71\00:50:19.85 and be blessed from seeing the different trees, 00:50:19.88\00:50:22.05 that different nature that's out there 00:50:22.08\00:50:23.52 and have an outdoor education experience. 00:50:23.59\00:50:27.89 So that's the goal that we have. 00:50:27.92\00:50:29.46 I recently came from Cambodia, Rothy's country, 00:50:29.49\00:50:33.03 and I was so surprised to see a ministry there, 00:50:33.06\00:50:35.53 an orphanage, a school, 00:50:35.56\00:50:37.07 and they also have a butterfly paradise. 00:50:37.10\00:50:39.97 So we have a similar vision that of a butterfly paradise, 00:50:40.04\00:50:42.77 but of turning our grounds and our forests 00:50:42.80\00:50:45.51 into a nature school for visitors 00:50:45.54\00:50:49.14 and also for our students. 00:50:49.18\00:50:50.75 So that's a major goal we have there. 00:50:50.78\00:50:52.78 Of course, we want to strengthen our agriculture. 00:50:52.81\00:50:55.68 We want to offer pre-professional 00:50:55.72\00:50:57.82 in our health ministry department 00:50:57.85\00:51:00.06 and also credentialing for education majors 00:51:00.09\00:51:02.99 and the Midwifery program and the media department 00:51:03.02\00:51:06.16 and the pastoral evangelism. 00:51:06.19\00:51:07.86 So those are some of the short term goals 00:51:07.90\00:51:10.17 that we have to bless our young people. 00:51:10.20\00:51:11.53 You got plenty of them, you're staying very busy. 00:51:11.57\00:51:14.04 Well, we just believe that these changes 00:51:14.07\00:51:17.61 that are happening where 3ABN is very supportive, 00:51:17.64\00:51:20.28 the direction that you are going now 00:51:20.31\00:51:22.34 and we're so pleased to hear this. 00:51:22.38\00:51:24.55 And perhaps the Holy Spirit is impressing you 00:51:24.58\00:51:27.52 that you would like to support these changes, 00:51:27.55\00:51:30.59 and see them work together 00:51:30.62\00:51:32.72 with other Seventh-day Adventist Institutions. 00:51:32.75\00:51:36.86 Or maybe you would like to go to their lifestyle program. 00:51:36.93\00:51:39.89 We want to put up their address role 00:51:39.93\00:51:41.93 so you'll know how to get in touch with them. 00:51:41.96\00:51:46.74 If you would like to find out more about 00:51:46.77\00:51:48.90 Hartland Institute's Lifestyle Program, 00:51:48.94\00:51:51.81 Hartland College, or if you feel impressed 00:51:51.84\00:51:54.74 to support the Christian men and women 00:51:54.78\00:51:56.78 who are seeking training to become missionaries. 00:51:56.85\00:51:59.28 Please visit their website Hartland.edu. 00:51:59.31\00:52:03.79 That's Hartland.edu. 00:52:03.82\00:52:06.52 You may also call them 00:52:06.55\00:52:07.89 at area code (540) 672-3100 00:52:07.92\00:52:13.19 or write to them at Hartland Institute, 00:52:13.23\00:52:15.96 444 Hartland Oak Drive, Rapidan, Virginia 22733. 00:52:16.00\00:52:21.77
