I want to spend my life 00:00:02.00\00:00:07.94 Mending broken people 00:00:07.97\00:00:12.87 I want to spend my life 00:00:12.91\00:00:19.18 Removing pain 00:00:19.21\00:00:24.19 Lord, let my words 00:00:24.22\00:00:30.43 Heal a heart that hurts 00:00:30.46\00:00:34.96 I want to spend my life 00:00:35.00\00:00:40.74 Mending broken people 00:00:40.77\00:00:46.17 I want to spend my life 00:00:46.21\00:00:51.75 Mending broken people 00:00:51.78\00:00:56.15 Hello and welcome to another 3ABN Today program. 00:01:09.20\00:01:12.50 I'm Jason Bradley. 00:01:12.53\00:01:13.87 And we have an exciting program in store for you today. 00:01:13.94\00:01:17.64 We are going to be talking about prison ministry 00:01:17.67\00:01:21.84 and this is a United Prison Ministries 00:01:21.88\00:01:24.51 International update 00:01:24.55\00:01:26.31 and here with me to discuss this topic, 00:01:26.35\00:01:28.85 we have Carolyn Bland, she is the president of UPMI. 00:01:28.88\00:01:33.56 We have Antonio Hall, 00:01:33.59\00:01:35.12 who is the Director of Programs. 00:01:35.16\00:01:38.43 And we have Gilbert Wilks, 00:01:38.46\00:01:40.30 who is the president of Wilks Publications Inc. 00:01:40.33\00:01:44.60 And we have Scott A. Tibbs II, 00:01:44.63\00:01:47.87 who is the CMO, 00:01:47.90\00:01:49.37 which stands for Chief Marketing Officer. 00:01:49.40\00:01:53.78 Welcome to the program. Thank you. 00:01:53.81\00:01:56.64 Thank you for having us. Good to be here. 00:01:56.68\00:01:58.01 It's good to have you guys here. 00:01:58.05\00:02:00.02 I want to find out, well, I kind of gave away 00:02:00.05\00:02:02.55 what UPMI stands for. 00:02:02.58\00:02:05.02 But just tell us again, Miss Carolyn. 00:02:05.05\00:02:07.66 Okay. 00:02:07.69\00:02:09.02 Prison ministry is what the Lord told us to do. 00:02:09.06\00:02:11.83 Okay. 00:02:11.86\00:02:13.19 He said, "I was in prison and did you come visit Me?" 00:02:13.23\00:02:17.20 Not only that, 00:02:17.27\00:02:18.87 those people that are in prison, 00:02:18.90\00:02:20.74 they're people just like us that were led wrong. 00:02:20.77\00:02:25.67 They were caught. 00:02:25.71\00:02:27.08 A lot of us haven't been caught. 00:02:27.11\00:02:29.94 And we're all sinners and the wages of sin is what? 00:02:29.98\00:02:33.01 Death. 00:02:33.05\00:02:34.38 So we're all guilty. 00:02:34.42\00:02:37.52 And somebody has to have in their heart, 00:02:37.59\00:02:41.86 the mind to go and bring God's Word 00:02:41.89\00:02:45.93 to those that are lost. 00:02:45.96\00:02:48.03 Those that have been incarcerated, 00:02:48.06\00:02:50.20 some of them in there are more spiritual 00:02:50.27\00:02:53.10 than some of us out on the street 00:02:53.13\00:02:54.60 and in the church. 00:02:54.64\00:02:55.97 That's true. 00:02:56.00\00:02:57.34 So that's why there's prison ministry. 00:02:57.41\00:03:00.08 We want to go take the Word, like the Lord said, 00:03:00.11\00:03:02.94 "Go visit them, take the word to them, 00:03:02.98\00:03:06.82 be their friend." 00:03:06.85\00:03:08.48 But now one thing that Adventists have been doing 00:03:08.52\00:03:11.42 is going to prison for years. 00:03:11.45\00:03:14.89 But now they're lacking in when they get out of prison. 00:03:14.92\00:03:19.09 One of our young men that works with us, got out of prison, 00:03:19.13\00:03:23.16 and he went to church with us for almost a year 00:03:23.20\00:03:27.04 and then he gave his testimony 00:03:27.07\00:03:29.74 and, lo and behold, when he sat down the next week, 00:03:29.77\00:03:34.51 people didn't want to sit next to him, 00:03:34.54\00:03:38.45 that is something wrong 00:03:38.48\00:03:39.81 when we don't want to accept them as human beings. 00:03:39.85\00:03:42.55 Yes. 00:03:42.58\00:03:43.92 And they get out of prison in Alabama, they get, 00:03:43.99\00:03:46.49 what is it, $10? 00:03:46.52\00:03:47.86 $10. $10. 00:03:47.89\00:03:50.26 Wow. 00:03:50.33\00:03:51.66 They won't get a meal for $10 now. 00:03:51.69\00:03:53.03 So what are they gonna do? 00:03:53.06\00:03:54.40 So if they go back where they came from, 00:03:54.43\00:03:56.33 what's gonna happen? 00:03:56.36\00:03:57.70 That's on their train that brought them here. 00:03:57.73\00:03:59.37 They're going to go right back to prison. 00:03:59.40\00:04:01.87 So somebody has to go give them a different mindset. 00:04:01.90\00:04:05.11 Be there for them to help them when they get out. 00:04:05.14\00:04:08.08 They need more than just the Word of God. 00:04:08.11\00:04:10.75 Yes, yes. 00:04:10.78\00:04:12.11 They need love and they need genuine love, 00:04:12.15\00:04:16.08 love for the unlovely. 00:04:16.12\00:04:17.72 The Lord said, "What you do to the least 00:04:17.75\00:04:19.42 of these my brethren, you have done it unto Me." 00:04:19.45\00:04:22.76 So you see that guy on Skid Row? 00:04:22.79\00:04:25.83 Uh-huh. 00:04:25.86\00:04:27.20 The way you treat him the way you love him. 00:04:27.23\00:04:28.86 That's just the way you love the Lord. 00:04:28.90\00:04:31.70 So what you're saying is faith without works is dead. 00:04:31.73\00:04:35.70 And a lot of our prison ministries 00:04:35.74\00:04:38.04 go in there, teach the word, sunshine band, sunshine... 00:04:38.07\00:04:41.78 Sunshine band. 00:04:41.81\00:04:43.14 And when the people get out, where are they? 00:04:43.18\00:04:47.92 Where is their help? Yeah. 00:04:47.95\00:04:49.38 So that's what we are about now. 00:04:49.42\00:04:51.75 For years, we've been wanting to set up something 00:04:51.79\00:04:55.76 for ex-offenders. 00:04:55.79\00:04:57.13 And this is Toni's dream. 00:04:57.16\00:04:58.69 Now I've known Tony since 1981 00:04:58.73\00:05:03.87 and he's been with us since 1981. 00:05:03.90\00:05:05.83 He's going to share his story too. 00:05:05.87\00:05:07.54 Yeah. 00:05:07.57\00:05:08.90 And Tony has always been wanting to help ex-offenders. 00:05:08.94\00:05:13.78 Well, you know, it takes funds too. 00:05:13.81\00:05:16.44 And we haven't gotten around to it, but this is our goal now 00:05:16.48\00:05:19.51 is to help ex-offenders. 00:05:19.55\00:05:21.28 We got... 00:05:21.32\00:05:23.42 Scott, How many do we have on the grounds now? 00:05:23.49\00:05:25.92 We have 12 people. 00:05:25.95\00:05:27.56 We have about 12 right now, but we want to do more. 00:05:27.59\00:05:31.56 Okay. 00:05:31.59\00:05:32.93 And we're going to talk about some of these things 00:05:32.96\00:05:35.20 that we have in mind. 00:05:35.23\00:05:37.50 But this is the point. 00:05:37.57\00:05:38.90 Prison ministry is good, we need to go, we're doing it, 00:05:38.93\00:05:42.70 but you have to help them when they get out too. 00:05:42.74\00:05:44.97 All right, absolutely. 00:05:45.01\00:05:46.34 There has to be souls want to the kingdom. 00:05:46.37\00:05:48.98 Well, before we jump in any further 00:05:49.01\00:05:51.71 and we want to be blessed in song, 00:05:51.75\00:05:53.72 before we get deeper into the interview, 00:05:53.75\00:05:56.12 we want to be blessed in song. 00:05:56.15\00:05:57.59 And Scott Michael Bennett will be singing 00:05:57.62\00:06:00.09 "Go Light your World." 00:06:00.16\00:06:01.79 There is a candle 00:06:11.07\00:06:15.10 In every soul 00:06:15.14\00:06:18.81 Some brightly burning 00:06:18.84\00:06:22.71 Some dark and cold 00:06:22.74\00:06:26.65 There is a Spirit 00:06:26.72\00:06:30.59 Who brings the fire 00:06:30.62\00:06:34.79 Ignites the candle 00:06:34.82\00:06:38.73 And makes His home 00:06:38.76\00:06:42.23 So carry your candle 00:06:42.26\00:06:46.43 Run to the darkness 00:06:46.47\00:06:50.21 Seek out the hopeless 00:06:50.24\00:06:54.28 Confused and torn 00:06:54.31\00:06:57.95 And hold out your candle 00:07:37.39\00:07:41.09 See now your sister 00:07:41.12\00:07:44.73 She's been robbed and lied to 00:07:44.76\00:07:48.76 She still holds her candle 00:07:48.80\00:07:52.90 Without a flame 00:07:52.93\00:07:56.60 So carry your candle 00:07:56.64\00:08:00.78 Run to the darkness 00:08:00.81\00:08:04.41 Seek out the lonely 00:08:04.45\00:08:08.32 The tired and worn 00:08:08.35\00:08:12.32 00:08:46.29\00:08:50.33 And light up the sky 00:08:50.36\00:08:54.13 Praying to our Father 00:08:54.20\00:08:58.27 In the name of Jesus 00:08:58.30\00:09:02.27 Make us a beacon 00:09:02.30\00:09:06.17 In the darkest nights 00:09:06.21\00:09:10.25 Carry your candle 00:09:10.28\00:09:14.02 Run to the darkness 00:09:14.05\00:09:17.69 Seek out the helpless 00:09:17.72\00:09:21.82 Deceived and poor 00:10:02.66\00:10:06.67 Go light your world 00:10:10.71\00:10:14.94 Wow. 00:10:20.62\00:10:21.95 Go light your world and that is exactly 00:10:21.98\00:10:23.99 what UPMI is doing behind bars and in the community. 00:10:24.02\00:10:29.59 Antonio, tell us a little bit about your background 00:10:29.62\00:10:32.86 and how you joined UPMI. 00:10:32.89\00:10:36.23 Well, my background started actually in prison. 00:10:36.26\00:10:39.37 I was not in prison ministry but I was locked up 14 times 00:10:39.40\00:10:43.44 in eight states before I was 20 years old. 00:10:43.51\00:10:46.68 And it was during that time that when I spoke in this jail, 00:10:46.71\00:10:52.25 I was in Rikers Island, New York. 00:10:52.28\00:10:54.05 Okay. 00:10:54.12\00:10:55.45 I was passing through New York, 00:10:55.48\00:10:56.82 never had intentions to stay overnight, 00:10:56.85\00:10:59.72 but I ended up in New York for seven years, 00:10:59.75\00:11:02.32 but only on Rikers Island for about three months. 00:11:02.36\00:11:05.99 What happened when I went to court, 00:11:06.03\00:11:07.63 I was given probation 00:11:07.66\00:11:09.43 because my charges were actually added 00:11:09.46\00:11:14.24 and do the thing that I was supposed to do it. 00:11:14.27\00:11:16.54 I was probated to drug court, 00:11:16.57\00:11:18.51 and drug court put me in a rehab program 00:11:18.54\00:11:22.01 for 18 months. 00:11:22.04\00:11:23.65 What happened when I was in Rikers Island, 00:11:23.68\00:11:27.12 I got in trouble with a religious group 00:11:27.15\00:11:29.98 that had promised to kill me and because of my mouth, 00:11:30.02\00:11:34.16 and then I picked up a Bible, 00:11:34.19\00:11:37.03 I touched the Bible for the first time 00:11:37.06\00:11:39.29 at 20 years old. 00:11:39.33\00:11:41.00 I was afraid to touch the Bible because I thought, 00:11:41.03\00:11:43.97 you know, from looking at television 00:11:44.00\00:11:45.97 and vampire movies and werewolf movies 00:11:46.00\00:11:49.34 that if I touch that Bible, 00:11:49.37\00:11:51.07 I would implode, you know, I really thought I was a devil. 00:11:51.11\00:11:55.58 And but I did, I opened the Bible. 00:11:55.61\00:11:58.58 And when I opened the Bible up, opened to a verse of scripture, 00:11:58.61\00:12:02.05 and that verse of scripture is John 14:6 00:12:02.08\00:12:06.09 and I heard Jesus say, 00:12:06.12\00:12:08.29 "I am the way, I am the truth, 00:12:08.32\00:12:12.23 I am the life and no man goes on to the Father 00:12:12.26\00:12:15.60 unless he come by Me." 00:12:15.63\00:12:17.80 Now to me, I heard a gangster talking, 00:12:17.83\00:12:21.37 you know, because I was into that type of thing. 00:12:21.40\00:12:24.24 And I believe that was the only way for God 00:12:24.31\00:12:27.38 to get my attention if I had to open the Bible to the part 00:12:27.41\00:12:30.85 where a little bambino 00:12:30.88\00:12:32.21 was wrapped in swaddling clothes 00:12:32.25\00:12:33.62 and laid in the manger, 00:12:33.65\00:12:35.05 I think I would have found something else. 00:12:35.08\00:12:38.92 But I was interested in this person, 00:12:38.95\00:12:42.02 this biblical character saying, 00:12:42.06\00:12:45.33 "I am the way, the truth, and the life." 00:12:45.36\00:12:47.40 I actually fell in love with Jesus 00:12:47.43\00:12:49.73 on that one scripture. 00:12:49.76\00:12:51.73 I wanted to get to know this Jesus. 00:12:51.77\00:12:54.37 So I started to study the Bible. 00:12:54.40\00:12:56.34 I took my Bible from Rikers Island 00:12:56.37\00:12:59.17 to the rehab program. 00:12:59.21\00:13:00.98 And from the rehab program, 00:13:01.01\00:13:02.88 I actually coined a therapeutic program 00:13:02.91\00:13:06.15 for myself to overcome my drug addiction. 00:13:06.18\00:13:08.45 So it was through the Bible. 00:13:08.48\00:13:10.09 And the secular program I was in, 00:13:10.12\00:13:12.32 I put the two together 00:13:12.35\00:13:13.86 and I ended up becoming drug free. 00:13:13.89\00:13:16.36 After that, I went into college, 00:13:16.39\00:13:19.13 the College of New Rochelle, after the College of New 00:13:19.16\00:13:22.40 Rochelle, New York Theological Seminary, 00:13:22.43\00:13:24.17 and I became a chaplain for the state of New York. 00:13:24.20\00:13:26.60 Wow. 00:13:26.63\00:13:27.97 And then after working for the state of New York 00:13:28.00\00:13:30.01 as a chaplain, 00:13:30.04\00:13:31.37 I moved back to Alabama from Birmingham, Alabama. 00:13:31.41\00:13:33.68 Okay. 00:13:33.71\00:13:35.04 And coming to Birmingham, Alabama, 00:13:35.08\00:13:36.75 is where I met Richard and Carolyn Bland. 00:13:36.78\00:13:39.45 They became my support system 00:13:39.48\00:13:41.98 because even though I had accepted the Lord 00:13:42.02\00:13:44.52 and I was studying the Bible and I was a Christian, 00:13:44.55\00:13:49.12 I still missed the ability 00:13:49.16\00:13:54.30 to overcome natural tendencies. 00:13:54.33\00:13:59.13 So being a part of that family, 00:13:59.17\00:14:02.60 I was able to recognize that I needed help. 00:14:02.64\00:14:07.74 And they were that support system for me. 00:14:07.78\00:14:10.45 I was baptized couple of months 00:14:10.48\00:14:12.55 after I had been going to the prison 00:14:12.58\00:14:14.78 studying in the prison 00:14:14.82\00:14:16.38 and helping others understand the Bible in Bible study. 00:14:16.42\00:14:19.79 And I was baptized 00:14:19.82\00:14:21.59 into the Seventh-day Adventist Church, 00:14:21.62\00:14:25.76 and a couple of years later, ordained as an elder. 00:14:25.79\00:14:29.13 And from that, you know, community service leader, 00:14:29.16\00:14:31.80 prison ministry leader, 00:14:31.83\00:14:33.54 and was able to travel with the prison ministry 00:14:33.57\00:14:36.71 to several countries and all across the US 00:14:36.74\00:14:39.84 and so forth and so on. 00:14:39.87\00:14:41.21 So I inherited a support system 00:14:41.24\00:14:46.18 and I knew how important it was for me. 00:14:46.21\00:14:48.95 And I looked at all the things 00:14:48.98\00:14:50.89 that I had learned over the years 00:14:50.92\00:14:53.02 and I started to really study rehab programs, 00:14:53.05\00:14:56.56 recovery programs, work for psalm. 00:14:56.59\00:14:58.76 At the same time, I was doing prison ministry. 00:14:58.79\00:15:00.90 I would work for rehab programs and so forth. 00:15:00.93\00:15:04.90 And I learned a lot and decided that the Lord had called me 00:15:04.93\00:15:08.57 to really prioritize 00:15:08.60\00:15:12.61 developing a transitional program. 00:15:12.64\00:15:17.05 And we talked about it, prayed about it. 00:15:17.08\00:15:19.81 Richard Bland encouraged me 00:15:19.85\00:15:21.55 to learn as much as I could about it. 00:15:21.58\00:15:24.52 And part of our dream was to, one day, 00:15:24.55\00:15:26.86 do this through United Prison Ministries. 00:15:26.89\00:15:28.66 Yes. 00:15:28.69\00:15:30.03 And time pass, 00:15:30.06\00:15:31.39 and we never really got to do it. 00:15:31.43\00:15:34.00 And I ended up working out 00:15:34.03\00:15:36.77 on a rehab program for women, 50 women. 00:15:36.80\00:15:38.93 I was the only male in the building. 00:15:38.97\00:15:40.44 Oh, wow. 00:15:40.47\00:15:41.80 And we had 30 children and I was the chaplain, 00:15:41.84\00:15:43.74 so they had to see me when we worked. 00:15:43.81\00:15:45.94 And then I was asked... 00:15:45.97\00:15:48.01 Richard said he was retiring and he had already resigned 00:15:48.04\00:15:52.38 from his offices, you know, 00:15:52.41\00:15:54.05 and he said, "I'm gonna recommend you 00:15:54.12\00:15:56.69 to the board as the next director." 00:15:56.72\00:15:59.39 So you can do those things 00:15:59.42\00:16:01.66 that the Lord laid on your heart." 00:16:01.69\00:16:03.73 And that was in 2013, 00:16:03.76\00:16:06.53 and we started to do work with United Prison Ministries 00:16:06.56\00:16:10.37 and developing that particular avenue 00:16:10.40\00:16:13.07 or that particular stage of prison ministry 00:16:13.10\00:16:15.54 because the prison ministry is three stages. 00:16:15.57\00:16:18.27 The first stage is the pre-release 00:16:18.31\00:16:19.74 what you do while you're in prison. 00:16:19.77\00:16:21.11 You prepare people to come out of prison. 00:16:21.14\00:16:22.74 Okay. 00:16:22.78\00:16:24.15 You work with them on making decisions. 00:16:24.18\00:16:26.41 And, you know, the Bible is the best decision-maker. 00:16:26.45\00:16:28.92 It's the... 00:16:28.95\00:16:30.29 You know, the Holy Spirit is our leader, our God, 00:16:30.32\00:16:32.22 our teacher, and accepted Jesus Christ in the prison, 00:16:32.25\00:16:36.96 you become a part of a support group. 00:16:37.03\00:16:39.26 Yes. 00:16:39.29\00:16:40.63 But when you come out of the prison, 00:16:40.70\00:16:42.06 you leave that support group behind. 00:16:42.10\00:16:44.60 Now it's time to have another support group 00:16:44.63\00:16:47.77 outside the institution. 00:16:47.80\00:16:49.27 And, you know, the interesting thing 00:16:49.30\00:16:50.81 is you use the word decisions, 00:16:50.84\00:16:53.11 you help them to be prepared to make decisions. 00:16:53.14\00:16:56.75 You know, when you're in prison, 00:16:56.78\00:16:58.85 there's not a lot of decisions or choices 00:16:58.88\00:17:01.42 that you get to make, 00:17:01.45\00:17:03.59 a lot of choices and stuff are made for you. 00:17:03.62\00:17:05.72 But when you come out of prison, 00:17:05.75\00:17:07.69 you're got to think about what you want to wear, 00:17:07.72\00:17:09.39 what you're going to eat, where you're going to go, 00:17:09.42\00:17:11.43 what time you have to be at this place or that. 00:17:11.46\00:17:14.20 I mean, there's a wide variety of decisions 00:17:14.23\00:17:17.47 that we on the outside take for granted. 00:17:17.50\00:17:21.14 But for somebody getting out of prison, 00:17:21.17\00:17:23.30 that can be quite intimidating. 00:17:23.34\00:17:25.54 So that preparation is crucial. 00:17:25.57\00:17:27.18 Exactly. 00:17:27.21\00:17:28.68 To make a decision... 00:17:28.71\00:17:30.05 We only work with... 00:17:30.08\00:17:31.41 We've been successful 00:17:31.45\00:17:32.78 in the reentry part of our ministry 00:17:32.81\00:17:34.82 because we make decisions as well. 00:17:34.85\00:17:38.49 If the person who is an inmate and is incarcerated, 00:17:38.52\00:17:42.26 don't make decisions, like avoid disciplinarians 00:17:42.29\00:17:46.93 and don't take advantage of academics 00:17:47.00\00:17:49.30 and vocational studies, 00:17:49.33\00:17:51.07 don't take advantage of chapel services, 00:17:51.10\00:17:53.84 don't take advantage of about substance abuse, 00:17:53.87\00:17:57.54 and anger management programs in the prison 00:17:57.61\00:18:00.31 if they show no track record of doing these things, 00:18:00.38\00:18:03.28 we know that when they get out, 00:18:03.35\00:18:05.05 they won't take advantage again. 00:18:05.08\00:18:06.48 Yeah. 00:18:06.51\00:18:07.85 So we decide who is going to come 00:18:07.88\00:18:09.85 into our program because the people who we decide 00:18:09.88\00:18:12.72 to take into our reentry program, 00:18:12.75\00:18:14.69 our transitional program, 00:18:14.72\00:18:16.32 they are now a part of our community. 00:18:16.36\00:18:18.69 Okay. 00:18:18.73\00:18:20.10 And if we have to guard the community as well, 00:18:20.13\00:18:21.83 you know, as best as we can, 00:18:21.86\00:18:23.37 so we have to do assessments to make sure 00:18:23.40\00:18:25.07 that we choose the right people. 00:18:25.10\00:18:26.77 And then we go through that third stage is the... 00:18:26.84\00:18:31.94 Well, you know, retention is what happens 00:18:31.97\00:18:35.41 when they are baptized, 00:18:35.44\00:18:36.78 when a person is baptized in the church, 00:18:36.85\00:18:39.35 we have to learn how to love them 00:18:39.38\00:18:41.48 and loving is not a special thing 00:18:41.52\00:18:43.49 because what happens is you treat people 00:18:43.52\00:18:46.45 as you would want to be treated. 00:18:46.49\00:18:48.19 And only thing we do is remind the church 00:18:48.22\00:18:50.23 in many different ways 00:18:50.26\00:18:51.59 how would you want to be treated 00:18:51.63\00:18:54.20 if you yourself was stigmatized, 00:18:54.23\00:18:57.57 you know, by prison incarceration 00:18:57.60\00:19:00.34 and you had been born again 00:19:00.37\00:19:03.00 and your lifestyle has changed and you are baby now 00:19:03.04\00:19:05.81 because you know nothing of this new lifestyle, 00:19:05.84\00:19:09.28 then how would you want someone to address you 00:19:09.31\00:19:11.48 and work with you and strengthen you? 00:19:11.51\00:19:13.42 So when strength meet needs and strength build on strength, 00:19:13.45\00:19:17.79 we know you understand recidivism, 00:19:17.82\00:19:19.55 the recidivism rate is short, 00:19:19.59\00:19:21.62 and we don't have to worry about in the state 00:19:21.66\00:19:24.53 where we're working now, 00:19:24.56\00:19:26.63 the probation and parole department 00:19:26.70\00:19:28.66 when I just walk into the office 00:19:28.70\00:19:30.90 to represent someone to the hearing, 00:19:30.97\00:19:33.34 and they say, "Just because he's here, 00:19:33.37\00:19:35.07 we're going to let you go or let the person go." 00:19:35.10\00:19:37.91 They're gonna give them a chance 00:19:37.94\00:19:39.27 'cause they know I've done the background check, 00:19:39.31\00:19:40.68 I know you understand the person 00:19:40.71\00:19:42.18 that I'm representing, 00:19:42.21\00:19:43.55 and we have not had one person to violate or return to prison 00:19:43.58\00:19:47.75 that we've worked with in the last eight years. 00:19:47.78\00:19:50.39 So we have a pretty good record. 00:19:50.42\00:19:52.02 That's amazing because, 00:19:52.05\00:19:53.86 you know, one of the things that we see that is so high 00:19:53.89\00:19:58.33 is the rate of recidivism 00:19:58.36\00:20:00.40 because once someone is incarcerated, 00:20:00.43\00:20:03.70 people want to keep them in the system basically. 00:20:03.77\00:20:07.14 So the fact that you're equipping them 00:20:07.17\00:20:09.37 with decision-making skills and you're doing your homework 00:20:09.40\00:20:13.98 before you take them on, 00:20:14.01\00:20:17.35 that is a wonderful and a wise move as well. 00:20:17.38\00:20:20.72 And, Gilbert, 00:20:20.75\00:20:22.08 what have you published for UPMI? 00:20:22.12\00:20:25.42 We've published millions of Happiness Digest magazines 00:20:25.45\00:20:31.83 for him. 00:20:31.86\00:20:33.19 Okay. 00:20:33.23\00:20:34.56 Richard came to me over 30 years ago 00:20:34.60\00:20:36.16 and said my Bible study guys need to look better. 00:20:36.20\00:20:41.04 And since we're printers, we were able to do that for him 00:20:41.07\00:20:44.61 and we contributed that to him. 00:20:44.64\00:20:46.88 And then as we began to build a relationship, 00:20:46.91\00:20:50.65 we got into a lot of other printing 00:20:50.68\00:20:53.62 that he could use. 00:20:53.65\00:20:55.18 The main flagship for Richard was Happiness Digest 00:20:55.22\00:20:58.89 in the nature format. 00:20:58.92\00:21:00.56 Okay. 00:21:00.59\00:21:01.92 When he came over and asked me to do that, 00:21:01.96\00:21:05.09 it became an instant success at our publishing houses. 00:21:05.13\00:21:09.80 They were putting on a millions of those at a time. 00:21:09.83\00:21:12.20 And people do say we're cutting down. 00:21:12.23\00:21:14.24 So Richard not only has had us design that 00:21:14.27\00:21:18.01 he's had his design and many other pamphlets. 00:21:18.04\00:21:20.28 One time, right after 9/11, 00:21:20.31\00:21:23.55 he wanted to put a million mark Bibles 00:21:23.58\00:21:28.85 in New York City, and he says, 00:21:28.88\00:21:30.79 "I have two weeks to do that." 00:21:30.82\00:21:32.35 Nice. 00:21:32.39\00:21:33.76 He brought it to us and we put out 00:21:33.79\00:21:35.12 a million of them in New York City for two weeks. 00:21:35.16\00:21:37.53 Nice. 00:21:37.56\00:21:38.89 Now there's one publication 00:21:38.93\00:21:40.30 that I'm really thinking about here 00:21:40.33\00:21:41.66 and it's "What the Bible Says." 00:21:41.70\00:21:43.03 That's right. Right. 00:21:43.06\00:21:44.43 And we have a graphic of "What the Bible Says" 00:21:44.47\00:21:47.17 what that looks like. 00:21:47.24\00:21:48.57 And we have "What the Bible Says" 00:21:48.60\00:21:49.94 then we also have it in Spanish. 00:21:49.97\00:21:52.14 Correct. 00:21:52.17\00:21:53.98 And then out of What the Bible Says, 00:21:54.01\00:21:57.85 tell us about... 00:21:57.88\00:21:59.21 There's also... 00:21:59.25\00:22:00.62 And, Scott, maybe you can touch on this. 00:22:00.65\00:22:02.02 There's also several other publications. 00:22:02.05\00:22:06.19 Yes. 00:22:06.22\00:22:07.56 So the lesson, the Bible, What the Bible Says lesson 00:22:07.59\00:22:10.13 is actually kind of the starter packet 00:22:10.16\00:22:12.89 for the actual one through nine guides. 00:22:12.93\00:22:15.33 Okay. 00:22:15.36\00:22:16.70 And you can show the graphic of that. 00:22:16.77\00:22:18.10 But those 1 through 9 guides 00:22:18.13\00:22:19.93 are actually breakdowns of the 1 through 15 lessons. 00:22:19.97\00:22:23.71 So it just gives you a more in-depth understanding 00:22:23.74\00:22:25.84 of those lessons. 00:22:25.87\00:22:27.21 Yes. 00:22:27.28\00:22:28.61 And you're the chief marketing officer. 00:22:28.64\00:22:30.05 Yes, sir. 00:22:30.08\00:22:31.41 Now how did you get involved, Scott? 00:22:31.45\00:22:33.11 Well, my story is kind of different 00:22:33.15\00:22:34.72 just because I was born into it I feel like. 00:22:34.75\00:22:36.72 My grandmother and grandfather are the founders, 00:22:36.79\00:22:39.52 I was always near it. 00:22:39.55\00:22:41.09 And I always volunteered as much as I could, 00:22:41.12\00:22:43.12 and I found more and more passion for it. 00:22:43.16\00:22:45.79 And I started seeing the people I was helping 00:22:45.83\00:22:47.80 and, man, I was making a difference, 00:22:47.83\00:22:49.16 just my little self making a difference. 00:22:49.20\00:22:51.57 And so that's when I saw what I needed to do 00:22:51.60\00:22:54.40 and I stepped up and I started taking 00:22:54.44\00:22:56.81 smaller responsibilities here and there. 00:22:56.84\00:22:58.77 Right now I'm actually under mentorship 00:22:58.81\00:23:00.28 underneath my grandmother 00:23:00.31\00:23:01.81 and learning the ways of how to run this ministry 00:23:01.84\00:23:05.51 and just doing my absolute best. 00:23:05.55\00:23:06.92 Yeah. Yes. 00:23:06.95\00:23:08.28 And see, even though you grew up in it, 00:23:08.32\00:23:10.12 you could have left, but you stayed. 00:23:10.19\00:23:12.39 And that says a lot too. 00:23:12.42\00:23:13.76 And I know you have to be a proud grandma. 00:23:13.79\00:23:15.42 Oh, yes. 00:23:15.46\00:23:16.83 Yeah. 00:23:16.86\00:23:18.19 But, you know, all my children support the ministry. 00:23:18.23\00:23:21.53 They grew up, the girls on the floor grading 00:23:21.56\00:23:24.97 our first What the Bible Says lessons, 00:23:25.00\00:23:27.37 we had them printed dark shells, 00:23:27.44\00:23:29.44 you know, little homemade Bible studies. 00:23:29.47\00:23:32.61 And we started out with just a few 00:23:32.64\00:23:35.14 and before we knew it, 00:23:35.18\00:23:36.51 it was thousands and we were just overwhelmed 00:23:36.54\00:23:38.25 so they had to help me grade them, 00:23:38.28\00:23:39.88 and they'd be all out on the floor, 00:23:39.91\00:23:41.75 grading Bible lessons. 00:23:41.78\00:23:43.12 So they grew up in it, 00:23:43.15\00:23:44.55 and they went to prison with it. 00:23:44.59\00:23:46.15 So it's in their bones. 00:23:46.19\00:23:49.02 So here, my grandchildren now are in it. 00:23:49.06\00:23:52.69 Yes, yes. 00:23:52.73\00:23:54.50 And so you guys grade the lessons? 00:23:54.53\00:23:57.30 We did. 00:23:57.37\00:23:58.70 It got overwhelming. 00:23:58.73\00:24:00.17 After you get pretty near me enough... 00:24:00.24\00:24:03.61 But we actually picked up on re-grading these lessons 00:24:03.64\00:24:06.31 and now we're actually resending certificates. 00:24:06.34\00:24:09.11 So in the past three years since I've been on board, 00:24:09.14\00:24:12.41 we are grading these lessons 00:24:12.45\00:24:15.05 and sending out pre-certified certificates 00:24:15.08\00:24:18.82 that give these prisoners something to look forward to. 00:24:18.85\00:24:21.46 Nice. Yes. 00:24:21.49\00:24:22.82 Nice. 00:24:22.86\00:24:24.23 Now what's the story about maybe someone's life, 00:24:24.26\00:24:26.63 who has been transformed? 00:24:26.70\00:24:28.13 Actually one of the people we're working with right now, 00:24:28.16\00:24:30.47 Yvonne, who's on campus, she was actually in prison. 00:24:30.50\00:24:34.30 Not my mother Yvonne. 00:24:34.34\00:24:35.70 No, not your mother. 00:24:35.74\00:24:37.11 Maybe another Yvonne. 00:24:37.14\00:24:38.47 We should clarify that. Yes. 00:24:38.51\00:24:39.84 But we have a person on campus now 00:24:39.87\00:24:42.34 who was 20 years ago received our lessons in prison 00:24:42.38\00:24:46.58 and had no idea where we were located. 00:24:46.61\00:24:49.05 And 20 years later, she is now working 00:24:49.08\00:24:50.99 with us on campus 00:24:51.02\00:24:52.52 and has been there for almost four or five years. 00:24:52.55\00:24:55.72 And her story is unbelievable. 00:24:55.76\00:24:58.69 So that's the type of people we want to be helping 00:24:58.73\00:25:01.73 is someone like that Yvonne. 00:25:01.76\00:25:03.26 Yeah, yes. 00:25:03.30\00:25:04.73 Are there any others who have maybe received the study? 00:25:04.77\00:25:09.00 Or maybe you you've gone in 00:25:09.04\00:25:11.31 and you've ministered to some people, 00:25:11.34\00:25:14.08 what are some other stories of... 00:25:14.11\00:25:15.64 One little short story just quick, 00:25:15.68\00:25:18.08 we were at a church and it was broadcast 00:25:18.11\00:25:21.45 and they announced that we were in the audience 00:25:21.48\00:25:23.42 and later on, after the service over, 00:25:23.49\00:25:26.05 a lady walked up to us and she said, 00:25:26.09\00:25:29.09 "I just came, I heard that you were here. 00:25:29.12\00:25:31.36 I wanted to tell you, my husband has totally changed 00:25:31.39\00:25:35.93 since he started coming to your program at the prison 00:25:35.96\00:25:39.80 and taking your Bible study. 00:25:39.83\00:25:41.27 I just had to come tell you. 00:25:41.30\00:25:43.30 We both are so happy 00:25:43.34\00:25:46.81 that you brought the Lord into our lives, both of us, 00:25:46.88\00:25:50.55 and I just had to come tell you thank you." 00:25:50.58\00:25:52.51 And I just felt that how many people that are helped 00:25:52.55\00:25:55.38 we'll never know until we get to heaven and find out. 00:25:55.42\00:25:59.39 "Oh, I heard about you 00:25:59.42\00:26:01.39 when I was in prison," you know? 00:26:01.42\00:26:03.06 Amen. 00:26:03.09\00:26:04.43 So there's a lot of people will never know that we reach, 00:26:04.46\00:26:07.03 but now one particular young man, 00:26:07.10\00:26:09.20 all of us know him. 00:26:09.23\00:26:10.57 He's Andre. Okay. 00:26:10.60\00:26:11.93 I met him the first time I ever went to prison in 1980, 00:26:11.97\00:26:18.04 and he was 21 years old. 00:26:18.07\00:26:20.08 So that makes him 60 this year when his birthday comes. 00:26:20.11\00:26:24.61 And he's still incarcerated. 00:26:24.65\00:26:28.28 He said he didn't do with... 00:26:28.32\00:26:29.88 He was signed... 00:26:29.92\00:26:31.42 You know, but anyway, that's a long story. 00:26:31.45\00:26:34.16 But Andre, we gave him C.D. Brooks' tapes 00:26:34.19\00:26:37.63 to listen to. 00:26:37.66\00:26:38.99 And they used to listen to them all the time at prison, 00:26:39.03\00:26:42.63 and sometimes when we'd go, 00:26:42.66\00:26:44.00 we'd show his film, C.D. Brooks' film 00:26:44.07\00:26:47.04 of one of his evangelistic meetings 00:26:47.07\00:26:49.47 that he had. 00:26:49.50\00:26:50.84 And a lot of the inmates grew up 00:26:50.91\00:26:53.24 at the prison on C.D. Brooks. 00:26:53.27\00:26:55.71 But even C.D. Brooks came and went to prison 00:26:55.74\00:26:58.65 to meet Andre and had an evangelistic meeting there 00:26:58.68\00:27:03.05 at the prison for the inmates 00:27:03.08\00:27:05.15 because they loved him so much, 00:27:05.19\00:27:07.39 'cause we had been playing C.D. Brooks' tapes 00:27:07.46\00:27:10.73 and the films and everything for about six or seven years. 00:27:10.76\00:27:15.53 So they really were engrossed... 00:27:15.56\00:27:17.37 In fact, when C.D. Brooks came there, 00:27:17.40\00:27:19.60 Andre shook his hand and when on to tell him about 00:27:19.63\00:27:22.77 one of his sermons preaching like he did 00:27:22.80\00:27:24.61 while he was shaking the hand. 00:27:24.64\00:27:26.11 Oh, that was so cute. 00:27:26.14\00:27:27.51 But Andre has been a witness to the Lord and has won 00:27:27.58\00:27:30.95 many, many inmates to Christ 00:27:30.98\00:27:34.32 because he is soul on fire for the Lord. 00:27:34.35\00:27:36.22 Yeah. 00:27:36.25\00:27:37.59 And that song we just heard, "Go light my candle." 00:27:37.62\00:27:40.36 "Go Light Your World." 00:27:40.39\00:27:41.72 Yes, yes. 00:27:41.76\00:27:43.09 He's he sings that too. 00:27:43.12\00:27:44.46 And he has a wonderful voice. 00:27:44.49\00:27:46.13 And oh, he's just he's just a blessing. 00:27:46.16\00:27:48.80 And he has been serving the Lord 00:27:48.83\00:27:51.03 now for 38 years. 00:27:51.07\00:27:53.57 Wow! 00:27:53.64\00:27:54.97 38 years. Praise the Lord. 00:27:55.00\00:27:56.71 He changed little by little that first year 00:27:56.74\00:27:58.74 and then he just got on fire for the Lord. 00:27:58.77\00:28:01.58 Nice. 00:28:01.61\00:28:02.94 Now what are some challenges that you face with UPMI, 00:28:02.98\00:28:06.75 what are some challenges? 00:28:06.82\00:28:08.28 Well, the first thing, you know, 00:28:08.32\00:28:10.72 when an inmate is baptized into our church, 00:28:10.79\00:28:15.29 he gets no Sabbath school quarterly 00:28:15.32\00:28:17.43 unless we give it to him. 00:28:17.46\00:28:18.79 He gets no connection with the church 00:28:18.83\00:28:21.70 outside except for us. 00:28:21.73\00:28:24.20 And we think that the challenge would be for us 00:28:24.27\00:28:28.57 to be able to supply them with materials 00:28:28.60\00:28:32.37 and have the church be interested 00:28:32.41\00:28:35.31 in the inmate that has been baptized. 00:28:35.34\00:28:38.11 And naturally, I said before, to be there for them, 00:28:38.15\00:28:42.52 to help them in a way 00:28:42.55\00:28:45.39 other than just giving them the Word 00:28:45.42\00:28:47.16 when they get out. 00:28:47.19\00:28:48.52 Yes, yes. 00:28:48.56\00:28:49.89 Now, Antonio, as Director of Programs, 00:28:49.92\00:28:54.33 what is your vision for UPMI in the upcoming future? 00:28:54.36\00:29:00.84 Like what Sister Bland just said, 00:29:00.87\00:29:03.81 in our churches, we are not recognizing that 00:29:03.84\00:29:07.01 when a man received the Word of God 00:29:07.08\00:29:09.14 or woman received the Word of God, 00:29:09.18\00:29:10.75 it makes no difference about their address. 00:29:10.78\00:29:13.72 They become children of God, equal to any of the rest of us, 00:29:13.75\00:29:18.59 but what we did... 00:29:18.62\00:29:20.59 I was asked to baptize in this prison where Andre is. 00:29:20.66\00:29:26.93 And Andre, I baptized him. 00:29:27.00\00:29:29.63 But before I did that, I went to the church board 00:29:29.66\00:29:33.44 and I asked the church board to authorize the baptism. 00:29:33.47\00:29:37.67 And what the board voted was that this person would be 00:29:37.71\00:29:42.81 in good standings in the church 00:29:42.84\00:29:44.68 as any other member and that we would do 00:29:44.71\00:29:48.72 what is needed and was needed. 00:29:48.75\00:29:50.69 And that is we will make sure that they receive 00:29:50.72\00:29:52.89 Sabbath school quarterlies. 00:29:52.92\00:29:54.49 And if they were indigent, 00:29:54.52\00:29:55.99 meaning they didn't have any one 00:29:56.02\00:29:58.13 to help them financially in prison, 00:29:58.16\00:30:00.93 we would give part of the poor fund to them 00:30:00.96\00:30:03.97 because they were members of the church, 00:30:04.00\00:30:06.00 and we will keep them informed. 00:30:06.03\00:30:07.54 And they would at least once a month, 00:30:07.57\00:30:10.01 write a letter with a prayer request, 00:30:10.04\00:30:13.71 with a testimony 00:30:13.78\00:30:15.21 of what was going on in the prison, 00:30:15.24\00:30:17.25 and with other brothers receiving the Word of God 00:30:17.28\00:30:20.02 and life changes 00:30:20.05\00:30:21.52 and what was going on in the house... 00:30:21.55\00:30:23.89 I mean, in the church behind the walls. 00:30:23.92\00:30:26.05 So we voted on that, we did, we baptized. 00:30:26.09\00:30:28.69 Now we have people wanting to be baptized 00:30:28.72\00:30:32.16 in the prison 00:30:32.19\00:30:33.53 because they're actually becoming a part 00:30:33.60\00:30:35.23 of the church 00:30:35.26\00:30:36.60 and the church is showing them love 00:30:36.67\00:30:38.23 and ignoring their stigmatism. 00:30:38.27\00:30:41.24 But what we're doing is we're moving forward 00:30:41.27\00:30:45.04 in transitional housing now in a big way, 00:30:45.07\00:30:49.64 and we have 72 acres of land, 00:30:49.68\00:30:52.41 and we have the blessings of our community where we are, 00:30:52.45\00:30:57.42 we're out in the rural area, 00:30:57.49\00:31:00.66 and we have blessings to actually work with people 00:31:00.69\00:31:04.59 'cause the community does not had any incidents 00:31:04.63\00:31:07.60 or negatives against us, they love us and want to see us 00:31:07.63\00:31:11.63 do greater things in the community. 00:31:11.67\00:31:14.14 And we're looking to develop a transitional home 00:31:14.17\00:31:17.91 that will be a model 00:31:17.94\00:31:20.58 for how this thing can and should be done. 00:31:20.61\00:31:23.68 And we're looking to develop a training center very soon. 00:31:23.75\00:31:27.52 We talked about a training center, 00:31:27.55\00:31:29.62 I don't know, 25 years ago 00:31:29.65\00:31:32.32 how we would love to put together 00:31:32.35\00:31:34.06 a training center where we would have 00:31:34.09\00:31:35.49 the best of the best, we're doing prison ministry 00:31:35.52\00:31:37.96 and have that which they can contribute to others 00:31:37.99\00:31:42.16 that are doing prison ministry, bring our strengths together 00:31:42.20\00:31:44.73 to meet our needs. 00:31:44.77\00:31:46.17 And a training center is one of the things 00:31:46.20\00:31:47.90 that we're working on as well, 00:31:47.94\00:31:49.94 but not only a training center 00:31:50.01\00:31:51.81 but we're looking to develop an industry. 00:31:51.84\00:31:54.41 Okay. 00:31:54.44\00:31:55.78 Because if we don't have a way to put people to work 00:31:55.81\00:31:59.21 that otherwise wouldn't have something to do 00:31:59.25\00:32:01.48 if we didn't have a way to provide some training 00:32:01.52\00:32:04.29 for those who would probably not have a position 00:32:04.32\00:32:08.92 to make a living and so forth and so on. 00:32:08.96\00:32:12.49 We need to help them with that. 00:32:12.53\00:32:14.66 And we've been talking to our Brother Wilks about, 00:32:14.70\00:32:18.37 you understand, his industry 00:32:18.40\00:32:20.64 and how we can become a printing business, 00:32:20.67\00:32:25.14 so to speak. 00:32:25.17\00:32:26.51 Nice. 00:32:26.54\00:32:27.88 And how we could find some investors to help us 00:32:27.91\00:32:30.68 get the equipment and set up 00:32:30.75\00:32:32.78 and run for a while until we get on our feet. 00:32:32.81\00:32:35.82 But we can put people to work 00:32:35.85\00:32:37.19 and we can now also train people 00:32:37.22\00:32:40.16 to take our literature into the community 00:32:40.19\00:32:43.09 and either sell it or get a donation, 00:32:43.12\00:32:46.49 you understand, for that ministry. 00:32:46.53\00:32:47.86 So now not only are they studying the Word of God 00:32:47.90\00:32:50.77 but they have an avenue to share the Word of God. 00:32:50.80\00:32:53.44 But not only that, 00:32:53.47\00:32:54.80 they could have some supplemental income from that. 00:32:54.84\00:32:57.54 Yes. 00:32:57.61\00:32:58.94 So we're looking that area as well. 00:32:58.97\00:33:00.38 So you're equipping them with trades and tools 00:33:00.41\00:33:02.48 and things that can get them back to work 00:33:02.51\00:33:06.15 and, as they say, 00:33:06.18\00:33:08.02 a productive citizen of society. 00:33:08.05\00:33:09.45 Exactly. 00:33:09.48\00:33:10.82 Instead of just talk... 00:33:10.89\00:33:12.22 As well as spreading the gospel. 00:33:12.25\00:33:13.59 Well, instead of just talking of how it goes, 00:33:13.62\00:33:14.96 we know what the need is, doing something about it. 00:33:14.99\00:33:17.23 Yes. Yes. 00:33:17.26\00:33:18.59 So we are actually going to that next level. 00:33:18.63\00:33:20.23 United Prison Ministries International 00:33:20.30\00:33:22.23 is a solid foundation. 00:33:22.26\00:33:24.63 It's a solid foundation. 00:33:24.67\00:33:26.37 But we know once you build a solid foundation, 00:33:26.40\00:33:28.70 you need to put a frame on it. 00:33:28.74\00:33:30.61 And that's what we are doing that 00:33:30.64\00:33:32.04 we are framing it so that it can be... 00:33:32.07\00:33:34.18 And everything that we have at our disposal will be used 00:33:34.21\00:33:39.75 to further the ministry, 00:33:39.78\00:33:41.38 and we are sharing with all prison ministries 00:33:41.42\00:33:44.75 because the materials that we print in the Bibles 00:33:44.79\00:33:48.92 that we buy by the millions, 00:33:48.96\00:33:50.73 every prison ministry in the world 00:33:50.76\00:33:54.10 and especially in North America. 00:33:54.13\00:33:56.46 We'll be privy to the same cost we have, 00:33:56.50\00:33:59.97 you know, so we're talking about 00:34:00.04\00:34:02.97 now developing the United Prison Ministry, 00:34:03.00\00:34:07.48 especially when it comes to training and supplies. 00:34:07.51\00:34:12.21 We wanna be able to share with all prison ministries 00:34:12.25\00:34:15.62 that we might be one prison ministry, 00:34:15.65\00:34:18.09 and we do this thing state by state 00:34:18.12\00:34:20.76 and help people out because of the rules 00:34:20.79\00:34:22.72 and the laws of each state. 00:34:22.76\00:34:24.53 You understand, this thing is gonna grow. 00:34:24.56\00:34:26.16 And we believe that God has put in the end 00:34:26.19\00:34:29.30 of what I call a laundry list 00:34:29.33\00:34:31.90 in the Book of Matthew Chapter 25 00:34:31.93\00:34:34.60 is a laundry list to me because 00:34:34.64\00:34:36.44 He goes down this list and He talk about the things 00:34:36.47\00:34:38.84 we have done in ministry. 00:34:38.87\00:34:41.04 And at the end He says, "You were sick and in prison, 00:34:41.08\00:34:44.51 and you came on to Me," 00:34:44.55\00:34:46.08 and I've come to understand that sick and imprison 00:34:46.11\00:34:48.82 simply mean, that drug addiction 00:34:48.85\00:34:52.19 and so forth and so on and incarcerated. 00:34:52.22\00:34:54.49 But now when, you understand, we look at this laundry list, 00:34:54.52\00:34:59.59 we find the last thing on the list is in prison. 00:34:59.63\00:35:02.93 So we believe that if we minister 00:35:02.96\00:35:04.87 to the prison population and minister 00:35:04.90\00:35:07.34 to the ex-offenders as should be, 00:35:07.37\00:35:09.67 this work will be finished. 00:35:09.70\00:35:11.14 And we'll have other soldiers to help us finish this work. 00:35:11.17\00:35:13.68 Yeah. I wanna read that quick. 00:35:13.71\00:35:15.04 Please. 00:35:15.08\00:35:16.41 This comes from... 00:35:16.44\00:35:17.78 Starting from verse 36. Matthew Chapter 25. 00:35:17.81\00:35:19.65 Okay. 00:35:19.68\00:35:21.08 And then I'll start in verse 34. 00:35:21.12\00:35:23.89 Okay. 00:35:23.92\00:35:25.25 "Then the King will say to those on His right hand, 00:35:25.29\00:35:27.92 'Come, you blessed of My Father, 00:35:27.96\00:35:30.23 inherit the kingdom prepared for you 00:35:30.26\00:35:32.16 from the foundation of the world, 00:35:32.19\00:35:34.20 for I was hungry and you gave Me food, 00:35:34.23\00:35:36.53 I was thirsty and you gave Me drink, 00:35:36.56\00:35:39.07 I was a stranger and you took Me in, 00:35:39.10\00:35:41.67 I was naked and you clothed Me, 00:35:41.70\00:35:43.91 I was sick and you visited Me, 00:35:43.94\00:35:45.91 I was in prison and you came to Me.' 00:35:45.94\00:35:48.61 Then the righteous will answer Him saying, 00:35:48.64\00:35:50.48 'Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You 00:35:50.55\00:35:53.25 or thirsty and give You drink? 00:35:53.28\00:35:55.25 When did we see You a stranger and take You in 00:35:55.28\00:35:57.92 or naked and clothe You? 00:35:57.95\00:35:59.79 Or when did we see You sick or in prison and come to You? 00:35:59.82\00:36:03.63 And the King will answer and say to them, 00:36:03.66\00:36:05.93 'Assuredly, I say to say to you, 00:36:05.96\00:36:09.26 inasmuch as you did it 00:36:09.30\00:36:11.37 to one of the least of these My brethren, 00:36:11.40\00:36:14.14 you did it to Me.'" 00:36:14.17\00:36:15.50 I'm most inspired by that statement, 00:36:15.54\00:36:17.81 that question that the Christians asked Jesus, 00:36:17.84\00:36:22.74 "When did we do it?" 00:36:22.78\00:36:25.28 And that question inspires me 00:36:25.31\00:36:26.65 because that question says to me 00:36:26.72\00:36:28.92 that they did it from their hearts. 00:36:28.95\00:36:30.89 They used everything they had at their disposal, 00:36:30.92\00:36:33.76 but they were not satisfied with the quantity of work 00:36:33.79\00:36:40.60 that they had done, and they wanted to do more, 00:36:40.63\00:36:44.07 and they thought that maybe they had not done enough. 00:36:44.10\00:36:48.87 But Jesus, through His mercy, says to them, 00:36:48.90\00:36:53.98 "As much as you done 00:36:54.01\00:36:55.81 unto the least of these My brethren, 00:36:55.84\00:36:58.01 you've done it on to Me." 00:36:58.05\00:36:59.38 And when all of us, those who can give financially 00:36:59.41\00:37:04.42 and help us make this thing happen 00:37:04.45\00:37:06.89 is equal to those who own the foot soldiers 00:37:06.96\00:37:10.13 that are doing the work because we're working together. 00:37:10.16\00:37:13.93 I'm reminded of John 17. 00:37:14.00\00:37:16.43 Jesus would pray out loud, 00:37:16.46\00:37:18.03 He would pray and allow us to hear Him pray. 00:37:18.07\00:37:21.07 We are part of the prayer. 00:37:21.10\00:37:22.70 And He says, "My prayer, Father, is they be one," 00:37:22.74\00:37:26.61 and I can see an opportunity for us to be one 00:37:26.68\00:37:29.44 because if we all work together, 00:37:29.48\00:37:31.48 none of us can do this by ourselves. 00:37:31.51\00:37:33.92 Yeah. 00:37:33.95\00:37:35.28 No matter how hard we work in Verbena, Alabama, 00:37:35.32\00:37:38.02 we cannot do this by ourselves. 00:37:38.05\00:37:40.86 Do you go into prisons and share your testimony? 00:37:40.89\00:37:44.23 I go to prisons all over the place. 00:37:44.26\00:37:46.13 I've probably been in every prison 00:37:46.16\00:37:47.50 than the rest of us been. 00:37:47.53\00:37:48.86 Yeah. 00:37:48.90\00:37:50.27 And I do it on a regular basis. 00:37:50.30\00:37:51.63 But I spend most of my time now working in the field, 00:37:51.67\00:37:55.80 working in the churches, 00:37:55.84\00:37:57.21 helping churches to understand how important it is 00:37:57.24\00:38:00.38 for us to be a part of this great work. 00:38:00.41\00:38:02.54 I find myself at conferences 00:38:02.58\00:38:04.95 and I've been consulting 00:38:04.98\00:38:07.88 with our South Central Conference 00:38:07.92\00:38:10.29 with the Southern Union 00:38:10.32\00:38:11.65 and the North American Division in these areas. 00:38:11.69\00:38:14.59 I want to also put because the word united, 00:38:14.62\00:38:17.86 a lot of people are under the assumption 00:38:17.89\00:38:20.43 that conferences support us 00:38:20.50\00:38:22.76 and that the General Conference support us, 00:38:22.80\00:38:24.67 and that's not true. 00:38:24.70\00:38:26.03 You guys are a lay ministry. 00:38:26.07\00:38:27.44 We're a lay ministry, a self-supporting ministry. 00:38:27.47\00:38:29.34 Okay. 00:38:29.37\00:38:30.71 But we have also for years answered the requests 00:38:30.74\00:38:34.34 that were mailed to General Conference 00:38:34.38\00:38:36.34 for material. 00:38:36.38\00:38:37.71 Nice. Nice. 00:38:37.75\00:38:39.08 We do it religiously. 00:38:39.11\00:38:41.65 So let me ask you a question. 00:38:41.68\00:38:44.85 What does a typical day look like for you? 00:38:44.89\00:38:47.56 Okay. 00:38:47.59\00:38:48.92 Well, you know, we used to feed everybody 00:38:48.96\00:38:51.86 that are on the campus, 00:38:51.89\00:38:53.23 but that was getting to be too experience... 00:38:53.26\00:38:56.33 Expensive. Expensive. 00:38:56.36\00:38:58.00 But there's phone calls all the time with inmates now, 00:38:58.03\00:39:03.74 Scotty on the not inmates, ex-inmates. 00:39:03.81\00:39:08.18 More on the grounds, 00:39:08.21\00:39:09.54 I'm on the grounds most of the time, 00:39:09.58\00:39:10.95 and I'm working hands-on with inmates daily. 00:39:10.98\00:39:13.08 Okay, so what does your day look like? 00:39:13.11\00:39:15.22 My day, usually, goes on 00:39:15.25\00:39:17.62 with meeting with the prisoners, 00:39:17.65\00:39:19.19 talking whether our day is gonna be with our farm. 00:39:19.22\00:39:21.66 Right now some of the stuff we're doing is fixing the roofs 00:39:21.69\00:39:24.66 of our main campus building. 00:39:24.69\00:39:27.90 And we're doing a lot of the landscaping, 00:39:27.93\00:39:29.63 so I have actually an ex-offender 00:39:29.66\00:39:31.10 who does our landscaping. 00:39:31.13\00:39:32.50 We have an ex-offender, Yvonne who does our mail run. 00:39:32.53\00:39:35.20 And she also helps 00:39:35.24\00:39:36.57 with our grading of our certificates. 00:39:36.60\00:39:37.94 Okay. 00:39:37.97\00:39:39.31 So we kind of have a mixture of things 00:39:39.34\00:39:40.68 that we do daily. 00:39:40.71\00:39:42.04 There's not really a one similar day. 00:39:42.08\00:39:43.75 Yeah, yeah. They're always different. 00:39:43.78\00:39:45.48 It's kind of... 00:39:45.51\00:39:46.85 You all wear multiple hats. 00:39:46.92\00:39:48.25 Yes. Yes. 00:39:48.28\00:39:49.62 We all wear multiple hats. 00:39:49.65\00:39:50.99 We all know about that one. 00:39:51.02\00:39:52.35 Yeah, definitely. 00:39:52.39\00:39:53.72 Definitely. 00:39:53.76\00:39:55.09 Well, that's beautiful. 00:39:55.12\00:39:56.46 It sounds like you guys are being a blessing. 00:39:56.49\00:39:58.49 And, you know, the interesting thing 00:39:58.53\00:40:00.40 is when you go into these prisons 00:40:00.43\00:40:03.26 because I have a passion for prison ministry as well, 00:40:03.30\00:40:05.70 when you go into these prisons to be a blessing 00:40:05.73\00:40:08.60 and to encourage other people, 00:40:08.64\00:40:10.94 you end up coming out of there so blessed, 00:40:10.97\00:40:14.64 it's an amazing experience. 00:40:14.68\00:40:17.15 And maybe you at home haven't had a chance 00:40:17.18\00:40:20.72 to get involved with prison ministry. 00:40:20.75\00:40:22.75 Maybe you've been kind of hesitant 00:40:22.78\00:40:24.32 to get involved. 00:40:24.35\00:40:25.69 Get involved. 00:40:25.72\00:40:27.26 And you'll see what a hunger some of the people 00:40:27.29\00:40:33.93 that are behind bars have for the Word of God. 00:40:34.00\00:40:36.70 I've been into prison before and seen a Bible 00:40:36.77\00:40:39.93 given to an individual 00:40:39.97\00:40:41.67 and tears just coming down his face. 00:40:41.70\00:40:44.01 And you guys are sharing the Bible, 00:40:44.04\00:40:48.28 "What the Bible Says," 00:40:48.31\00:40:50.45 with those that are incarcerated. 00:40:50.48\00:40:53.42 And the powerful thing about that 00:40:53.45\00:40:56.45 is it's what the Bible says, 00:40:56.48\00:40:58.02 like, I mean, it leads them to look in their Bible 00:40:58.05\00:41:01.56 for the answers to the questions. 00:41:01.59\00:41:03.66 So they're going to the Word of God. 00:41:03.73\00:41:06.39 And they're finding the answers to the questions. 00:41:06.43\00:41:09.46 And these are questions that everybody has. 00:41:09.50\00:41:15.10 Now that's why we wanted to have a training center 00:41:15.14\00:41:18.04 for those that are really interested in going 00:41:18.07\00:41:20.98 and don't know exactly what to do 00:41:21.01\00:41:22.98 because there is certain things you should not do 00:41:23.01\00:41:26.38 and those things that you should. 00:41:26.41\00:41:27.95 Now one of the things is to always know your scriptures 00:41:27.98\00:41:31.39 so that you can answer questions from the Word, 00:41:31.42\00:41:34.79 don't give your opinion. 00:41:34.82\00:41:37.03 We're gonna have to stick with the Word 00:41:37.06\00:41:39.16 'cause Jesus said it is written. 00:41:39.19\00:41:41.83 His answers were from the scriptures 00:41:41.86\00:41:43.67 and that's what we should do. 00:41:43.70\00:41:45.03 Yeah. So that is a must. 00:41:45.07\00:41:46.67 Yeah. 00:41:46.74\00:41:48.07 And there's a certain love you share. 00:41:48.10\00:41:54.18 But you don't get an emotional attachment. 00:41:54.21\00:41:59.88 I don't know how to explain that. 00:41:59.91\00:42:01.42 That was good. 00:42:01.45\00:42:04.29 That we don't want women to go in there 00:42:04.32\00:42:07.06 and have an inmate want to have her phone number 00:42:07.09\00:42:11.13 or write or stuff like that, 00:42:11.16\00:42:12.79 you know, and if you do write an inmate, 00:42:12.83\00:42:15.23 it should be strictly on a spiritual level 00:42:15.26\00:42:18.50 and not on to get involved in a romantic level. 00:42:18.53\00:42:22.44 Never give your home address or anything like that. 00:42:22.47\00:42:25.07 You have to remember where you are. 00:42:25.11\00:42:26.81 Right. 00:42:26.88\00:42:28.21 And you just need to be trained. 00:42:28.24\00:42:29.74 And that's why we want to get the training center going, 00:42:29.78\00:42:33.05 but we've been talking about this for years. 00:42:33.08\00:42:34.68 But we are on our way now to do it. 00:42:34.72\00:42:36.62 Yes. Amen. 00:42:36.69\00:42:38.02 Amen. Well, praise the Lord. 00:42:38.05\00:42:39.39 And we hope that our viewers will support this initiative 00:42:39.42\00:42:42.89 as well. 00:42:42.92\00:42:44.59 You know, Scott Michael Bennett blessed us 00:42:44.63\00:42:47.20 with Go Light Your World. 00:42:47.23\00:42:49.06 Now he's gonna bless us in song with Blessings. 00:42:49.10\00:42:53.54 We pray for blessings 00:43:09.55\00:43:13.46 We pray for peace 00:43:13.49\00:43:17.43 Comfort for family 00:43:17.46\00:43:20.60 Protection while we sleep 00:43:20.63\00:43:25.07 We pray for healing 00:43:25.10\00:43:28.84 For prosperity 00:43:28.87\00:43:32.24 We pray for Your mighty hand 00:43:32.27\00:43:35.84 To ease our suffering 00:43:35.88\00:43:39.78 And all the while 00:43:39.81\00:43:43.39 You hear each spoken need 00:43:43.42\00:43:47.46 Yet love is way too much 00:43:47.49\00:43:50.33 To give us lesser things 00:43:50.36\00:43:54.33 'Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops 00:43:54.36\00:43:58.33 What if Your healing comes through tears 00:43:58.37\00:44:01.90 And what if a thousand sleepless nights 00:44:01.94\00:44:05.61 Are what it takes to know You're near 00:44:05.64\00:44:11.38 And what if trials of this life 00:44:11.41\00:44:15.78 Are Your mercies in disguise 00:44:15.82\00:44:21.52 We pray for wisdom 00:44:33.64\00:44:37.54 Your voice to hear 00:44:37.61\00:44:40.78 And we cry out in anger 00:44:40.81\00:44:44.05 When we cannot feel You near 00:44:44.08\00:44:49.05 We doubt Your goodness 00:44:49.08\00:44:52.85 We doubt Your love 00:44:52.89\00:44:56.29 As if every promise 00:44:56.32\00:44:59.36 From Your Word is not enough 00:44:59.39\00:45:03.37 And all the while 00:45:03.40\00:45:07.24 You hear each desperate plea 00:45:07.27\00:45:11.11 And You long that we'd have faith to believe 00:45:11.14\00:45:17.88 'Cause what if your blessings come through raindrops 00:45:17.91\00:45:22.02 What if Your healing comes through tears 00:45:22.05\00:45:25.52 And what if a thousand sleepless nights 00:45:25.55\00:45:29.26 Are what it takes to know You're near 00:45:29.29\00:45:34.96 And what if trials of this life 00:45:35.00\00:45:39.30 Are Your mercies in disguise 00:45:39.33\00:45:46.01 When friends betray us 00:45:46.04\00:45:49.88 When darkness seems to win 00:45:49.91\00:45:52.48 We know this pain reminds our hearts 00:45:52.51\00:45:56.69 That this is not No, this is not our home 00:45:56.72\00:46:03.06 It's not our home 00:46:06.70\00:46:09.96 'Cause what if Your blessings come through raindrops 00:46:16.30\00:46:20.38 What if Your healing comes through tears 00:46:20.41\00:46:23.88 And what if a thousand sleepless nights 00:46:23.95\00:46:27.52 Are what it takes to know You're near 00:46:27.55\00:46:33.86 What if my greatest disappointments 00:46:33.89\00:46:38.46 Or the aching of this life 00:46:38.49\00:46:42.03 Is the revealing of a greater thirst 00:46:42.06\00:46:46.94 This world can't satisfy 00:46:46.97\00:46:52.84 What if trials of this life 00:46:52.87\00:46:57.55 The rain, the storms, the hardest nights 00:46:57.58\00:47:02.48 Are Your mercies in disguise 00:47:02.52\00:47:09.29 What another beautiful song entitled Blessings by Scott. 00:47:30.48\00:47:35.78 You know, we were talking about how, 00:47:35.82\00:47:40.46 you know, reducing the recidivism rate, 00:47:40.49\00:47:42.89 things that you want to see with UPMI 00:47:42.92\00:47:47.53 creating industry and equipping people 00:47:47.60\00:47:51.20 with trades and all that. 00:47:51.23\00:47:52.83 What are some of the things that you guys need? 00:47:52.87\00:47:56.60 We've been talking about 00:47:56.64\00:47:58.04 developing that industry right there 00:47:58.07\00:48:00.38 on the campus of UPMI. 00:48:00.41\00:48:02.98 And that industry will be printing materials that we use. 00:48:03.01\00:48:06.51 Printing materials that Brother Wilks can use, 00:48:06.55\00:48:11.29 and printing material that the inmates, 00:48:11.32\00:48:13.96 those who are ex-offenders can take to the community 00:48:13.99\00:48:16.93 and use for supplemental income and sharing the Word of God. 00:48:16.96\00:48:21.23 So what we need is donors to help us. 00:48:21.26\00:48:25.80 Get the equipment and set up that industry 00:48:25.83\00:48:28.97 so that we can become supporters of ourselves, 00:48:29.00\00:48:32.51 so we can help defray the cost of the donors 00:48:32.54\00:48:36.28 who are helping us so well now, 00:48:36.31\00:48:38.11 but help them provide finances 00:48:38.15\00:48:41.62 that we might continue this ministry 00:48:41.65\00:48:43.08 and continue to make it grow. 00:48:43.12\00:48:46.62 And what... 00:48:46.65\00:48:48.79 So you need finances. 00:48:48.82\00:48:50.23 What about volunteers?
